Solve : curser jumps around the screen and video is very jerky?

Answer»

Hi,
I am not SURE of the cause of this problem so I didn't know where to post this. Sorry if its in the wrong section.
I have Windows XP.
My CURSER jumps around the screen when I write emails. Its very annoying. I will be writing then suddenly find my text in a line halfway down the page in the middle of another sentence.
Another problem is that when I watch a video it is very jerky, stopping and starting, even when stored on disk, not when streaming.
Any ideas why this is happening and what I can do about it?
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks.Cursor jumping happens with emails only?Actually no, it happens all the time.Is this a wireless mouse?

What type of mouse is it? (Optical, laser, ect...)

What type of surface are you using it on?or are you using a laptop / notebook ?I'm using a laptop and don't use a mouse. Its a touchpad. Is this a new issue?

Have you updated the drivers for your touchpad?

Have you made any changes to the computer recently - INSTALLED PROGRAMS, downloaded files, etc?

Is the air intake free and is the fan running? Dirt and dust around the air intake?

Invoke Task Manager (CTRL+ALT+DEL)>Performance, what does it show for CPU utilization? If utilization seems 'high,' go to Processes tab, look in CPU column and see what is using the CPU - ignore a high (+/- 97%) utilization for System Idle Processes.Try external mouse, and see, if same thing happens.Hi drmsucks - yes its new since i recently reformatted all and reinstalled Windows XP Home and all my docs and programmes. Maybe you are right - I need drivers. Not sure how to get them - any advice?
Thanks.First, try what Broni suggested. If you tell us the make and model of your laptop we can show you where to get the drivers.I installed the correct driver and the problem is solved.
Thanks everybody, especially drmsucks.

Glad that you got it fixed!

Solve : cursor is cursed??

Answer»

i have a dell 2400 computer and a logitech cordless optical mouse. the cursor jumps to the top left of my screen while i'm playing my games, but i'm not intentionally moving the cursor at all. SOMETIMES it'll happen 4-5 times in a 10 MIN. period, and then won't happen again for hours. the cursor is easily retrievable, but games LIKE bingo get difficult when i have to chase the cursor. what do you suggest? new batteries haven't helped.try a new mouse and see if the issue persists. this mouse is only a few months old. do these things have a really short lifespan?? will i need to replace my mouse every few months?Quote

will i need to replace my mouse every few months?

no, but until you test your comp with another mouse, we cannot be sure if it is your mouse thats causing the problem.I presume you have tried new / freshly charged batteries in the cordless mouse?f its chordless then there should be a receiver try putting it really close to the mouse and see if it still happens

The OP already wrote this:

sorry I have trouble reading I swicth my post
I just recently got a cordless mouse and it acts strange when the batteries get low, but I see the OP has changed batteries. Personally I don't really like cordless mice. I suggest using one with a WIRE.
thank you all for your input. i was really hoping for some quick setting change or something. i hate to spend money for a new mouse when the problem is only an annoyance/nuisance. the receiver (if that's what the thingy plugged into the back of the computer is called) is about 2 ft. away from the mouse. Does your mouse have a reset button? I have a wireless Logitech LX7 mouse and I have to press the reset button on the bottom of the mouse occasionally.Aren't most wireless mice USB types? I have heard gamers say they prefer a PS/2 wired mouse to USB types, wired or wireless. That's PS/2, nothing to do with PS2 (the game console).

Aren't most wireless mice USB types?

I don't know but my MS wireless connects via PS2.

@phobarbenix: I have an MS wireless keyboard and mouse with the receiver connected to the computer via PS2. I've had a similar - but less predictable - erratic cursor movement for quite awhile. Numerous Google searches have revealed many other people with similar issue - but, I haven't seen any solutions. I was thinking of trying Logitech!

If you haven't already done so, try updating the driver - didn't work for me, but... .

Best of luck!

EDIT: And try the reset/re-connect that @Kip suggested - also didn't work for me. If I have my cell phone switched on and I place it anywhere on the desk it interferes with my wireless mouse & keyboardQuote from: Dias de verano on July 12, 2008, 01:09:45 PM
If I have my cell phone switched on and I place it anywhere on the desk it interferes with my wireless mouse & keyboard

Makes sense to me - I've thought that my erratic problems (that is to say, my CURSOR's erratic problems ), may well be caused by 'interference' of some sort. Toward that end, I've moved speakers, monitor, modem, router, USB hub, etc as far from the wireless receiver as possible. Possibly not far enough, but, I've not been able to isolate a cause. Part of the problem, of course, is that it's not predictable. I don't game or do anything requiring precise mouse movement, so, for me, the occasional whacked out cursor (<-technical description!) is, at most, a mild annoyance.

Truth be told, I like the weight and feel of a wired mouse much better than I like the weight and feel of my wireless mouse - I guess that I dislike the cord more!

Solve : Odd sounds coming from speakers?

Answer»

Ok.. i am a little confused here and i want to share, becuase i don't know what the *censored* it is ..
to start off with i turned the computer on and straight away heard talking.. followed by some random beeping noises.. then talking again and a bit of music ( the talking sounded like a foreign radio chat station. which is quite weird in itself becuase i don't know even if there are any!)
anyway, i went to volume control on control panel, muted "Line in" odd sounds stopped.. thought no more of it.. came here to check the forums.
and i swear i then heard someone say "the one" or something like that which was quiet loud.

the beeping noise is still going on right now if i un-mute Line in.. but the Line in is connected to my guitar FX pedals which is not switched on.. nor does it have anything plugged into it.
.. beeping has slowed now.. but still it sucks, 'bip.. bip.. bip..' sounds like a life support machine. which is going to GET annoying real soon..

WTH???You may be picking up spurious signals from a local radio station, perhaps an amateur radio fan has moved into your locality. If the problem persists I suggest you contact the nearest amateur radio club, I'm sure you will find that the members will do their utmost to assist even if it's not the responsibility of any licensed station.

A possible cause for the "bip" is a dodgy earth on an electric fence (a major problem if you live in a rural area).

You don't give details of your setup, are your speakers external/internal and self powered? Have you tried unplugging the line-in from your sound CARD.

this explains it.

i have taking classes on electronics(resistors, capacitators, Ohms law, etc.) the STRINGS on your guitar are acting as a antenna. which picks up carrier waves(radio waves) from radio stations. and the FX pedals are being the tuner which tunes to different radio stations or even some machines(the life support machine) so your guitar is picking up this stuff which is being feed into the sound card on your computer which AMPLIFIES it and sends it out to your speakers. you now have accendiently made a radio. my suggestion is to unplug the PLUG from your guitar that goes into your sound card. that should stop it.

Solve : ebay computer scam?

Answer»

a while ago i read a story online about a guy who had posted his computer on ebay. he RECEIVED emails from a guy in the UK who was INTERESTED in the computer. it ended up being a scam and the guy who was selling the computer got him so bad for trying to scam him and i was wondering if anyone knew where this story is online.

other details:
the guy selling figured out the guy was a scam because he wanted the guy to cash a CHECK and then send him money...or go through a site that wasn't ebay and wanted him to SAY the package was worth less so he wouldn't get tax on it (which he didn't do, he made the package as expensive as possible). the guy who was selling the computer sent a "computer" to the guy in the UK. (paper keys, everything hand written, etc etc.) the guy had the package sent to some coffee shop/internet cafe. the scammer ended up not liking his package and TRIED to send the seller a virus through email.

i think the story was posted online by a different person than who it happened to. i think the original guy had posted in a forum and got people in the UK to help him track down the guy and keep tabs on him.

so if anyone knows where this story is, i'd love to find out where there was a person who sold 2 xbox 360s but it said really small it was only pictures and cause he was under the paypal age he got the mony too

Hi,
Hope someone out there can help. I am not all that GREAT at explaining what is going on with my computer so bear with me. When I LOG onto the internet the page seems too big for my screen. I have the toolbar on top and bottom, but all of it seems to have MAGNIFIED! Like it is really upclose. Hitting the 100% button at bottom of screen does not help. Last week all was well then my son somehow hit system recovery!!! After reloading this is how it came back on Was it a system restore he did? What operating system are you using?I have Windows XP. I use Internet Explorer. It was System Recovery. System Restore goes back to a CERTAIN date. System Recovery goes back to the computers beginning. Most likely, you need to update video driver.

i afraid to USE this adapter for CHARGING my stone player.
is it work corect for me?

tanxWhat is wrong a "made in china" charger?

It is hard to find things now that aren't made in China. If you need a charger bad enough and you can't find one that is made in the country you want it to be made in then I guess you will have to use the "made in china" one or just don't charge your stone player.

Solve : I'm not surprised anymore...Adobe marries Norton this time?

Answer»

I was updating Adobe Shockwave Player, and what pops up?

Yeah I noticed this too. Sigh.. Get multiple virus scanners going and bloatware going on peoples computers and the poor end-user gets stuck with the problems. The Norton Security Scan is harmless. It just checks for security vulnerability in your PC and reports it. It installs but doesn't run in the background or anything like that. I've used it a few times.

The only difference in it and say a Housecall or ESET online scan is it doesn't remove what it finds. And no I don't agree with bundling this sort of thing but at least it isn't a toolbar.

What is Norton Security Scan?
Norton Security Scan is a software tool designed to help you UNDERSTAND if your computer is currently protected from known threats. Norton Security Scan will scan your computer and identify if there are existing viruses, worms, spyware, unwanted adware or Trojans residing on your computer. Norton Security Scan checks to see how your computer is currently protected.

How do I uninstall Norton Security Scan?

1 Click Start > Settings > Control Panel.

2 Click Add or Remove Programs.

3 Click Norton Security Scan, and then click Remove.

I'm sure you're all with me on this but I don't trust or like anything that is installed USING this method. Personally I think if they want to use this type of DECEPTION the very least they could do is not have the box checked by default. Thanks for that very well done post too Evilfantasy. Agreed. You should have to opt-in by default not opt-out.Wonder if there is a movement / petition going on to initiate a standard for companies to do this. I think it'd be worth it more for the companies to not have default checks because then they know that the end-user is really interested in installing their product and is not just simply installing it because they're not reading everything or paying attention.

I would have to do some serious searching to find the link but what I recall from memory these deals involve a huge amount of $$$. It's like buying advertisements only in the form of software. i hate these things cause i tend to go through installations really quick and dont see this then i get some crap installed on my computerI'm sure it's quite PROFITABLE. But if the company was serious enough about the program or add-on to know people would like it or want it they wouldn't default check it. If I was a company doing this I'd also want a model like web advertising (CPM) where you're paying off of actual action instead of potential installs. Although come to think of it maybe they are and that's why companies like Adobe is default checking...1. Easy to remove, or not, running in the background, or not - I DON'T WANT ANYTHING WITH NORTON NAME ON IT TO BE ON MY COMPUTER.
2. Any attempt to install product B, when I want to install product A only, personally I CONSIDER foistware, no matter, if some checkmark is there, or not. PERIOD! Also, any software, which has to use TRICKS to be installed on someone's computer, personally, I consider as crap.
Google, Yahoo toolbars, QuickTimes, Safaris, and others fall to the very same category.AHHH crap more crap on my crappy computer which runs crappy windows which is crap.

Solve : How to install XXP on Wrong Drive.?

Answer»

This post is for reference. It is not intended to be deliberately confusing. It just happens.

The title says it all. The wrong drive may be:
A new blank drive from OEM.
A drive bused exclusively by a non-windows OS.
A drive that has Vista.
Thins issue is not well understood, even by the experts

This link below has the right title, the wrong answer.
Preparing New Hard Drive For Windows XP Installation

The right answer should be the answer that even covers the rare cases that led to the question in the first place.

If you study this link very careful, thee is at least one answer that helps take care of the rare case where the XP CD will stall and not install. But other 'experts' muddle the issue with their limited experience.

There is a place where one poster says "Drive manufacturer's recommend using there utilities but its not necessary." Not always true! Just because it never happened to you does not mean it never happens at all. The OEM people know that the drive has to be prepared in some cases. It has to be ready for a OS that requires something.

In the Microsoft KB that is a warning that in may not be possible to install if the drive is not in the CONDITION or state the setup expects. The issue was resolved, but it still affects users with older versions of the setup utility. In brief, the setup utility has to have some free drive space before the rest of the install continues. Either in a Windows partition or unused space that can be found in the drive structure.

Also If nth the drive is not a MSDOS type, the setup hangs.
And there is more. But the issue is now history. As to why, it no longer matters. Unless you want to install XP, a OS MS wants to forget.

Conclusion: Sometimes, rarely perhaps, the XP install CD can not get to the point where is asks if you want to format the drive. In that case you must prep the drive with some other tool, such as a bookable floppy drive made from a download on the Manufactures web site.

The right answer can be found in the Microsoft KB, but in a different form. MS says to prep the drive using Vista or some PE program.

Solve : Did he hack my computer??

Answer»

I have a "friend" who apparently is good with computers. I won't go into detail about all the stuff he has done, but I'm almost certain he has tried to enter my computer in some way.

About six months ago, he transfered some files onto my computer via the network. I'm somewhat of a newb, so I can't remember if it was through shared network or open network, but he sent the files to my computer. All I had to do was click a few ok, and yes, buttons and I got about 5 gigabytes worth of files.

Well, just a little while ago I realized he probably has some type of access to my computer and it makes me a little anxious. I don't want to have my INFORMATION hacked from my computer 10 years from now. ANYWAYS, I have had a blue screen since then, many times had a "you are sharing an ip address with another computer" warning, certificate errors on Bing, somehow have a different homepage, and THINK I even saw the mouse move a few times... scary huh?

Well, what do you think I should do? Would reinstalling the operating system do the trick or does this guy likely to have actual control of my computer for good and have all sorts of good information about me? A wipe and a CLEAN install would be a good idea...
After that remember to change all your e-mail PASSWORDS as well.maybe you've allowed other computers to connect to the internet using your internet connection...

i would change my computer and internet password

and then unclick on "allow other network users to connect through........." from the network connection properties 5GB of files wow...yeah he could have EASILY hidden one patch in there that doesn't even need to be clicked on. Back in the day when ICQ was a popular used chat platform, before msn messenger became big. It would give out your personal IP address and port, if you didn't know how to restrict if from doing that. You could use NetBus or Sub7 to gain access to basically anyone's computer and do anything you wanted...watch your doing...control your mouse, open webpages on your screen, open your cd-rom to essentially deleting your entire C: drive. Definitely do a format and reinstall of windows, if he's your "friend" doesn't sound like the nicest of ones

Solve : Is it worth fixing up my Toshiba laptop??

Answer»

Sorry im a newbie on the forums so im not sure if this belongs here or not

Around 2-4 years ago ( i was pretty young ) my mum bought us a Toshiba laptop to share and such. After awhile my mum decided to give it to me to keep since she didnt WANT it anymore but i had to share it with my bro and i was up for it. This was my very first laptop for me personally and i was young and didnt exactaly take good care of it. I would always PUT the battery plug thing into the computer too hard and we had to get that fixed up 2 or 3 times costing us alot. Then i was careless about the computer overheating and i think something happened to the battery and we had to get it fixed. I also destroyed two chargers...so overall we have probabaly spent around $1000 or more on repairs on it because of my recklessness but i was young. Its been about 2 years since i have used it and i was thinking of getting a new computer for school work and to play a few comp games on like the sims 3 and i realised that i still had it. Ived had about 2 comps since then and ive learnt how to take care of them (the one ive got ATM hasnt needed to be repaired and ive had it for a year). So do you reakon its worth fixing it up (it SEEMS to still be in good condition)? I cant afford a new comp at the moment. Also how can i check if it has a video card? (flicking through the old manuels for it, checking a website?)

You need to post :
1. What type/model of laptop?
2. What is the current condition/problem or is it still working?
3. Were you able to play those type of games without certain glitch on that computer?
Laptops being portable are not heavily made for intensive games as compared to custom built DESKTOPS or gaming PCs. You must also look into the specs of your laptop if it is capable of running certain games by looking onto recommended requirements or higher. The system that works over certain games and being overused tend to produce more heat and on a compact made computer, the laptop is a primary example.

Solve : Itouch as Laptop??

Answer»

Might need a new PC, but refuse to spend money on a WINDOWS product again.
Was wondering if, since I might be ABLE to afford an itouch, if this would WORK fine as my primary PC/laptop?Many road warriors are turning to tablets instead of laptops. If most of your work is POINT and clink with little typing, the touch tablet does the job.
This was published about two weeks ago. It confirms a trend many IT managers are seeing.
Tablet vs Notebook: The Consumer Decision
As for me, I still need my keyboard.
A real keyboard.
And a mouse.By iTouch are you referring to an iPod Touch or an iPad.

If iPod touch - The screen is very small so would not be very good as a replacement to a computer, especially for typing.

If iPad - It would work as a replacement especially if all you do it web browsing and email but bear in mind that you will need to get a special iPad compatible printer and you won't be able to use any regular PC programs. Also, the cheapest iPad is £399, you could get a fairly decent laptop for that.

Is msiexec.exe not a virus? Maybe not.
Confusing? Yes. Here is an old quote about the file:
Quote

... Any malware can be named anything - so you should check where the files of the running processes are located on your DISK. If a "non-Microsoft" .exe file is located in the C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32 folder, then there is a high risk for a virus, spyware, trojan or worm infection! ...
http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/http://www.fixfiles.net/msiexec.exe.html.exe.html
Virus?
Is it?
Is it not?
Is it really msiexec?
This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/msiexec.mspx?mfr=true

I just cleaned a Vista Laptop that used the program to block or LIMIT Internet connection. The virus spread to my other laptop when I tired to use a network bridge to get into the infected laptop. The virus infected my XP laptop!

Unfortunately I can not identify the actual virus. I have PUT this here because I don't want to mess up the virus forum with something that I can not document.

The first reference above is very DATED and should not be considered authoritative.

Can this be done? It can be done but you need to be a little more specific about what you are TRYING to do. Can you elaborate on what data is GOING into each sheet? How can you compare 2 SHEETS that are different and have the results show up with the missing data ? ?

Or is it me that's missing something ? ?Quote

Or is it me that's missing something ? ?

I was thinking along the lines of if sheet 1 has aa,bb,cc etc in column 1 and in column 2 you type either Yes or No then it would be easy to seperate the data onto sheet 2 and 3 using the If command.

...My friend uses IPOD? and has a MAC, I wonder if thats why it doesn't work??...
Probably MP3, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2565
http://ask-leo.com/audio_cds_what_format_should_i_use_to_burn_my_audio_cds.html

Doesn't matter what computer downloaded it, only the file format matters. How do I find out what the file format is, and is there a way to convert it, This is pretty new stuff for me I'm old 70 lol and from another generation.

Thanks for your help, glad I found this site.

BeanMusic files (and all files) have a name and extension, i.e. filename.ext. The extension is what Windows uses to determine what program to open it with.
mp3 files will be "filename.mp3"
wav files will be "filename.wav"
There are many converters, some are free. http://www.majorgeeks.com/Free_CD_to_MP3_Converter_d5428.html

If your CD player is older than about 10 years, it won't play mp3 files. It will only play audio formatted CD's.

Solve : Ethernet splitting?

Answer»

Trying to run a second line into my bedroom working from Brighhouse router, anyway to do it without ahving to buy another router or spend lots of money getting cable company to run a new line, not secure with using a wi-fi connection because of what I work on at times. Does the router have the typical 4 ports on back? What make and model is the router? I don't believe Brighhouse is a router brand name. Did you MEAN that Bright HOUSE Networks is your ISP (Internet Service Provider)? Maybe the O/P actually means a Bright House "modem" ? truenorthYes, that could be so; perhaps she actually has no router. Also, I believe some ISPs provide a combination modem/router, which, like a separate router, would most likely have 4 ports on back to support multiple computers. Hopefully time will tell us. truenorthBrighthouse is a cable company.

It sounds like you will need to run another line to your bedroom some how.

You don't need another router.I ran an ethernet cable from one floor to another by going mostly through cold air furnace intake channels inside walls. In this case, the cable was basically going from router in a ROOM on a second level to a room directly below on the first level. I merely drilled one or two holes in framing studs in the wall to achieve this; I did not need to cut holes in any any wall. The cable COMES out in the RECEIVING room right through the cold air vent on the wall. It's a bit unsightly but it's not a permanent situation; I can easily remove the cable with no visible trace left of it ever being run through the wall.

I don't want to try to explain this in more detail. Suffice to say you may be able to run a line with less structural invasiveness than you are thinking now. You may just need to carefully analyze the situation.

Ok, i am a little panicked here...

i have had this flashdrive, san disk cruzer 4gig for a few months, and today, all the files in a folder dissapeared.

in the picture, you can see that the folderes are all still there, exept the files are gone
wierd THING is that it is only in the stolen inocence folder (BAND name, ment to be misspelled)

the ERIC robinson folder is perfectly OK, but what would make only one folder, keep all other folders, but erase all files.

i used it earleyer to edit a HTML file under the website folder, but now it is gone after plugging it into a dell insperon 1526.

any WAY to get the files back, because it is in use for a main storage device, and i was a fool not to back it up somewhere

anything i can do??Try Recuva.....Free...no promises.is there any way to get it back. I dont REMEMBER deleting anything, so i think it might have been movend or simmalar

Solve : wifi vs 3g?

Answer»

on the tablets some offer only wifi others 3g. i am not SURE what this really means. if one buys a TABLET with wifi only can he still connect with the internet via modem? If so, what is the advantage of the built in 3g?Which tablets are you referring to?

LET's take the iPad for example. Apple offers a Wifi iPad and a Wifi + 3G model.
This simply means that, on the 3G version, you can subscribe to a 3G network. This will give you internet access wherever there is 3G coverage.
The Wifi-only model means you can only use the internet where there is a wireless internet SIGNAL.

Does anybody know where I can find a PROFESSIONAL review of this product?

I just can't be without a computer while my current one goes out for repair, and my current laptop weighs around 6 to 8 lbs. The Aspire One is MUCH lighter. Truthfully, I've never USED my laptop anywhere but home, and unless I have free wifi, I can't afford to buy wifi service at this point - unless I can somehow connect the Aspire to my Motorola cell phone. I have to figure out if the Asprice One, at this price ($250), is a good buy.

Solve : Test Servers?

Answer»

Hi Guys and girls,

I've got a couple of TEST servers at the moment, and I'm at a bit of a loss with what to do with them.

They're my own personal kit, at my house, which has a dreadfully slow broadband connection (0.5Mbps down, 0.35Mbps up).

I've got:
A Dell 2450, with 60ish GB HDD space and 2 x 1GHz (32 bit) CPU's with (I think) 1GB RAM

A 1U Supermicro SERVER with 160GB HDD space and 1 x 2.4 (I think)(32 bit) HT CPU with 4GB of RAM.

At the minute I've got ESXi 3.5 running on the supermicro, and nothing on the 2450.

I'm keen to work with MS technologies, as that's what I work with in my day-to-day (I'm a tech support / sys admin for a small company), so I'm thinking of getting the Technet Plus Std subscription.

With that said, I was curious to see what others would do given the hardware?

I'm thinking about having a play with Linux, but the proper stuff like CentOS, as I want my "play things" to have transferable skills. In other words, it's no good playing with Ubuntu Desktop stuff when coporations don't really use it.

I'm also keen to setup some "play websites", and I know dotnetnuke well enough that I could do some serious playing with it.

So, I open it up to you, what would you "play with" given this situation?I would play around with sharepoint. Seems like a lot of companies are starting to use that. If you're just wanting to work with Microsoft stuff, try using Hyper-V instead of VMWare. I've got a Hyper-V box with 16 VMs at work that's working like a charm. If you don't want to pay for a windows server license, you can download the Hyper-V Server for free straight from Microsoft.Quote from: michaewlewis on March 02, 2011, 10:16:58 AM

Don't you need a 64 bit CPU with VT (or an AMD 64 bit CPU) to run Hyper-V?

I'm considering plonking down to DOSH to get Technet Plus, so I wouldn't need to worry about licences...either that or get a 64 bit box that can pass those 64 bits down to a VM, and then get the subscription later this year.

Ironically, I got a Sharepoint 2007 for Dummies book that I need to read through.Yep, you're right. I missed that point.
In addition to sharepoint, how are you with Active Directory, DNS, IIS, and the like? (stuff that COMES built into server os)Quote from: michaewlewis on March 02, 2011, 10:37:49 AM
Yep, you're right. I missed that point.
In addition to sharepoint, how are you with Active Directory, DNS, IIS, and the like? (stuff that comes built into server os)

AD, DNS, IIS, all of those fall under my day-to-day responsibilities at my job.

Here we're really only using 2003 across probably 15-20 servers throughout the company. We've got 2 datacentre locations, and the main office (HQ) with VPN's running between all 3 sites (a mix of Cisco-Cisco and Windows-Windows.)

We've got a 2008 server running Virtual Server 2005 R2, but that's about it for "new" technologies...which is why I'm keen to learn stuff at home.

I'm keen to expand my skill set with newer tech and transferrable skills.

Lol, this is beginning to sound like an introduction at an interview!Well, with a technet subscription, you get access to more microsoft software and resources that you can try out for free. Maybe you should make that the priority and get your x64 system later.Quote from: michaewlewis on March 03, 2011, 09:19:21 AM
Well, with a technet subscription, you get access to more microsoft software and resources that you can try out for free. Maybe you should make that the priority and get your x64 system later.

I'm 50/50 on which way to do it, as all the new MS stuff is 64 bit only.

I think I'll try and sell some stuff off and then buy a 64 bit machine, and then get Technet Plus. How much are your test servers worth? Maybe you could sell them and get a newer server with the money you make from them..... And remember, for testing purposes especially, you don't need server class hardware to set up a server. You could get a cheap 64 bit workstation and and throw server software on it.They're probably not worth £100 in total.

So I'll probably just save up and get something that's 64 bit and can act as a hypervisor.

Solve : trying to save paper/ink when printing?

Answer»

Hi , when printing something, is there a way to eliminate the pages that print just an URL at the top of the page, or a 1/2 or whole page of domain addresses? This... much of the the time amounts to little more than a waste of ink and whole sheets of paper. Is there a way or a program that can eliminate these extra pages that are not really needed when printing?

Thanks,
beachguyIt is NOT possible to use any internal "program" to automatically do what you want. However there can be ways to achieve it. Some pages offer a "print version" they often will print only the text of the ARTICLE. You can verify that it has reduced the print operation to achieve your objective by selecting "print preview" before actually printing. It may or may not reduce it to the degree you seek. Another method is to scan only the portion you want to print and do EITHER a "control P" command from your KEYBOARD with the portion to be printed "highlighted". You can also define the area to be printed by a program that allows saving a portion of the desktop and then saving it and printing from the saved location. truenorthI always use print preview and scroll up and down and choose which page or pages I actually want to print; also I play around with scaling, page setup, margins etc to GET as much of what I want to print, on as few pages as possible. The best way to save ink (toner in my case) is to think carefully whether you actually do need to print at all. It is amazing how much you don't really need to print.
Usually, invoking the Print command gives you the option to print the "selected" portion of your source document. In other words, highlight the portion you want to print and then limit your printing to that portion.

And, along with what Salmon Trout's comments about thinking carefully about whether you really need to print something, you might install a PDF conversion program such as PrimoPDF or CutePDF and then "print" your document to a PDF file. Then, you can view it using a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader or Foxit Reader. Alternatively, you could do a screen capture and save the capture as an image file (.jpg, .GIF, etc.). Other steps you can take are booklet and duplex (manual or automatic) printingI have to admit that I am much more careful about the toner and paper I have to pay for at home, than the stuff my employer pays for where I work.
Thanks to everyone who answered this. I will try the suggestions given.

Solve : wheel mouse discoveries?

Answer»

I know this discussion is getting old but I just had another discovery. If I'm using WLM (Windows Live Mail) with Windows 7. If I click on a message in WLM and then press sideward left or right with the tilt wheel, the message list scrolls up or down. I'm guessing you have that setting in the mouse properties
Mine are set to copy (left) and paste (right)Quote from: Allan on January 16, 2011, 04:29:22 PM

I'm guessing you have that setting in the mouse properties
Mine are set to copy (left) and paste (right)
In the mouse properties, my wheel is simply set to AutoScroll. The software for the Microsoft Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 I'm using with Windows 7 does not provide any special settings for the tilt function of the mouse wheel; it only has settings for the wheel "button", or pressing the wheel as a button. So, such discoveries as this seem to be things I have no way to change or CONTROL; they are apparently default behavior that can not be changed. Hmmm. Interesting. I only use Logitech so I'm not familar with MS mouse drivers.I NEVER use any Driver software that comes with mice. But that's just me.

Generally, the built-in generic mouse driver supports any number of buttons and scroll wheel axes; the default behaviour for the mouse driver is to send any number of well documented system messages for the various scrolling features of the mouse; in the case og horizontal "tilt" scrolling, the active window is sent WM_MOUSEHWHEEL messages.

Now, this might follow with a question such as "why is their mouse software to begin with" Well, that's pretty simple; the generic Windows-included driver can't possibly include everything, and the older versions included with older versions of windows didn't support many things; Windows 98 and earlier, for example and NT4, don't, by default, support any number of these messages- this includes those for any "wheel" messages.
Thing is, the "driver" software, as we all know, has essentially full control over what the mouse actually ends up doing; with windows 98SE for example, using a scroll-wheel mouse often requires to use of the included drivers, and the drivers themselves say "ahh, I'm running on a version that doesn't support the mouse wheel; I'll emulate it's functionality using different messages" and usually it ends up sending WM_VSCROLL and WM_HSCROLL messages; this is why you often see options for "how many lines" to scroll at a time.

Additionally, many drivers (such as the Intellipoint) will send their own "custom" message to the active window when the scroll whell or extra features of the mouse are used; if the program responds to that message with TRUE (meaning "yes, I have responded and acted on that message" the driver generally says "alright, cool, no need for me to hack about with you and send you scroll messages instead" otherwise, (if the active window ignores the message) the driver sighs and "emulates" the wheel actions using the messages for window scrolling. In general, it works well.

What this MEANS however is of course that each application can do what they please for each message; but in some cases what happens is "generic" (when you get the H/VSCROLL messages instead) I believe this model was brought forward for compatibility; that is, Win7 still sends the various scroll messages if an application doesn't respond to the wheel messages.

When we SPEAK of "programmable" mice, it's actually a misnomer; when you change the settings in a mouse control panel for what the tilt or scroll features do, you aren't programming how the mouse itself responds insomuch as you are programming what the driver tells your applications the mouse does for each FEATURE; for example, if you enable the swap mouse buttons feature, windows itself will swap the various button messages to switch the parameters so left clicks are interpreted as right clicks; in the same fashion, "programming" the scroll and tilt wheel functions simply tells the driver what to send to the active window. In the case of Copy and Paste, for example, it's as simple as sending a WM_COPY or WM_PASTE message rather then the specific wheel scroll messages. (or the even more default window scroll messages).Quote from: patio on November 21, 2010, 08:33:53 AM

Solve : Help with connecting Comp. to tv?

Hello, My question is: How do I get netflex on my television screen? I am going to include everything I have tried so far and nothing has helped.
TV is a 47" flatscreen with HDMI port and USB ports.
Blueray DVD hometheater system with HDMI port
Toshiba Laptop with USB ports and NO HDMI ports.
I have tried using the conversion connections for HDMI without success
I had a DVD player HTS and was told it was not blue ray so I purchased a blue ray system and was told by the store that I could use it to view netflex through my computer. I can veiw netflex video on my computer but I want to view it on my tv. I hope you can help me, I am very aggravated with the whole thing. .

Thank you very much
Tammy Hammond
Welcome to the Ch forums. Well from your post on your issue it appears that without a cable capable of two different ends (HDMI=TV) and (?) for laptop. We need you TELL us what type of output video port exists on the laptop. Then once we know that i feel very confident a specific cable will be available. Do you have an external VGA port for instance?truenorthOk, as far as I know there is a RGB Port and a a few USB ports and a Ethernet Port. If it helps I also have a ARRIS Touchstone Telephony Modem box and Motorola that has several ports on it, these come from the cable company the cable co. did not leave any books with any info on these items. I am sorry I do not know the tech. terms for these things. All I want to do is get Netflex on my tv, lol.
Thank You so very muchThis "netflex" thing... it's not Netflix by any chance, is it?

As for the cable... VGA to HDMI cables cost about $15

LOL, yeah it is "Netflix", I am sorry about the spelling. I have already tried the connectors you have in the pic. those did not work. I have also tried the "FN+F5" while using the connectors. I spent 82.00 bucks at Radio Shack on cords and connectors and had to take them back because they did not fix the problem. I ended up buying a Blueray DVD player like Netflix suggested and called them only to have them tell me the Philips DVD player I bought was the wrong one, you would think they would have gave me the EXACT product I needed. I have a account through them because we watch Netflix on the computer.
If you know of a solution please tell me.
Thank You very much Did you change the TV's input to HDMI?Yes, I did change the input to HDMI. I am wondering if I can connect my BDVD to the internet and get internet to filter through the BDVD to the TV? I have a LAN connection on the back of the BDVD. Would you HAPPEN to know weather that can be done?
Thank YouContact Netflix and tell them about your account what bluray dvd player they support and what you have. Having or using HDMI cable connection for your monitor and dvd player has far better graphics. Check your MANUAL for your Bluray DVD player. Please provide the EXACT model of the Toshiba computer. truenorthYou should of bought a sony playstation it has blu ray, wireless, gamer, internet browser I would bring back that dvd player, the playstaion is so simple to use all you need is a wireless router and an hdmi cableyou will get a netflix app when you turn on the bluray player PROVIDING it's on netflixs list.Quote from: lochinvar on May 09, 2011, 01:41:46 PM

While trying to reinstall XP, windows doesn't see any HD's, and the RAID utility says the same thing.
I have no Doc's or drivers, and just winging it.
Sorry, not much to go on, but will appreciate any help offered.

Thanks.

Solve : eSATA or USB3??

Answer» eSATA or USB3?
This was found on web SITE of Peter Moulding.
He is very KNOWLEDGE able and his remarks suggest that we should forget about using EXTERNAL USB hard drives and switch to portable drives that use the new eSATA standard.

Do you use eSATA or USB3 to connect external disks to computers? Both are new. Which one works? Which one is the most practical?
eSATA is OLDER than USB 3.0. Some external disk enclosures have eSATA connectors. Some computer motherboards have eSATA connectors. eSATA should win.

Solve : DVR and survelance help?

Answer»

I am trying to put together a dvr for recording tv programs and also to hook up a survelance camera to it . Does anyone have experience building ONE ? Also what are the recommended hardware parts to get. Any recommendations :-*anyone? Check out Harbor Freight. I have their 4 camera DVR survailence product. They offer several cameras with 12vdc POWER SUPPLY.
They plug into a standard RCA VIDEO port. The video protocol is NTSC. All of the cameras have audio except the ones that came with
the set I bought. It has 4 video, 1 audio input, 1 output each. The firmware is kinda' neat with a 4 way slpit screen or TIMED rotation.
so if you have a NTSC camera it should plug right in. NeilYou might also check out Tiger Direct. I'm not a big Tiger Direct fan, but they seem to have a lot of surveillance equipment.

Solve : Why Sun Microsystems failed?

There is no company that does not BENEFIT from Open Source projects. Even Microsoft and Apple benefit.

There is a coffee shop down the road from my house and I guarantee they don't benefit from open source projects. Each REASON listed was separate reason.

I am quite aware of other solutions. I WORK with Vinux and have tried porting emacspeak to the PPC architecture on OpenBSD.
You aren't seeing any of what I said as products supported or developed by Sun.
The failure was in the business decisions.

mroilfield stated "There is a coffee shop down the road from my house and I guarantee they don't benefit from open source projects."

How would you know? Does it use a router? Have wireless? Look at every product they use. Do the companies they recieve supplies from use any open source application? If it's using an Apple product, they've benefited from FreeBSD. Android? Linux.

benefit from Open Source.
Even if that were absolutely true, The point is that Sun made bad market decisions. Open Source did not break or make them.
Now if Oracle-Sun gains market share, that will be a new story. Whether or not they will have success with another plan, only time will tell.
The point of this thread, IMHO, is that -
in the IT world you:
can not rest on your laurals.
Quote
...rest on your laurels
to be so satisfied with your achievements that you make no effort to improve. - Even though you did well on all your exams, you can't simply rest on your laurels.
Etymology: based on the literal meaning of laurels (a ring of leaves worn on the head in ancient times as a symbol of victory)
Apparently somebody- I won't name names- has decided that this thread is somehow about open SORES. It's not.Not quite; but, this thread is dead.
Sorry about tailing it.
