Solve : How To Transfer Music/Files From iPod Touch to New PC?

Answer»

Last MONTH, my old PC died. I was fortunate enough to be given a hand-me-down PC.
I have an iPod touch, and I want to MOVE the music from my iPod touch to ITUNES on the PC.
I then want to be able to download music on my PC, move it to iTunes then transfer it to my iPod without losing my CURRENT iPod music/files.

Since my old PC crashed, I am pretty SURE I did not have "manually managed music" selected.
I'd like to know, if possible, how I can move my music from my iPod touch to my new/used PC WITHOUT losing any of my current music on my iPod touch.
In other words, I want the iTunes on my new/used PC to synch with my iPod touch and then be able to download new music to iTunes and transfer it to my iPod as normal.

Is this possible? What are the steps?
Thanks.http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/07/16/copy-or-transfer-music-and-songs-from-ipod-to-pc-and-computer-without-itunes/

Solve : no power to laptop?

Answer»

toshiba satellite laptop, lost cord, battery dead, went to wal-mart to purchase new adaptor but when they plug it up still no power. power switch light comes on for a SECOND then goes off. is it a short or something?Have you TRIED taking it to a repair shop first? We won't know what happen to that laptop without more information first hand. Its also knowing if the hardware laptop is worth reviving on your part. When you say battery dead --is it possible that it can be RECHARGED or is it not able to be recharged. What happens if you (with your new ADAPTER plugged in) don't turn the laptop on but only permit a CHARGING function on the battery. Obviously with the "dead" battery in it's place. truenorthGeneric charger...they rarely work on laptops.

Solve : LOG-IN / NO LOG-IN??

Answer»
Hi,
I remember, in order to post a question on any topic, earlier you had to login and I used to.

But today, while posting a query on Software, I did not get the Login screen and my post was displayed just like that.

Is the Log in no more required?

Thanks

RKWhen LOGGING in username and password, there is an option to tick always stay logged in. So if you close browser without logging out, you will be directed here already logged in. Just not sure after reboot or restarting PC.From my experience once the option "there is an option to tick always stay logged in" is chosen as observed by jason2074 it is never necessary to USE the login process even on reboot or restarting PC. I suspect the only ways to stop that may be to "log out" but not sure if even that would OVERRIDE . Changing the parameter to require a log in would also stop the always logged in FEATURE. Certainly changing to another computer where the alway logged in option has not been selected will also require a log in. truenorthThank you, Sirs, to BOTH of you.

As the link posted by Allan says, it's an FTP SOFTWARE. You use it to upload and download files to/from a web server. FTP software is often used by web developers to upload the web pages developed on their PC to a web server hosting the website. Mr Allan and Mr. Soybean

Solve : Smart phones apps and security.?

Answer»

I just left the 'to do list' asking if there is a section of the forum DEDICATED to DISCUSSION concerning smart phones and the tech issues they add.

I do have a question specific to my droid regarding apps (are they all safe) and security (is it safe to use more than 1 security APP)? Questions SIMILARLY to a PC. 1) I have a Droid-X. Before DOWNLOADING any apps I "Google" them and read reviews on the Android Forums.

2) I don't use ANY security apps on the phone. From what I have read they are both unnecessary and a drain on the phone's battery.Going to google 'Lookout' now. Thanx

Solve : Recommend me a good DSLR cam for beginners?

Answer»

I discovered my new passion and that is photography. I would like to buy a dslr camera but I don't have any idea what is good for beginners like me. I HOPE someone can advice me something. What's your budget?$1K, will it make sense?I would stick to the major brands like NIKON and CANON. With that budget you could buy a good Nikon in the $500 to $600 range with a body with one lens and still have some money left over for an extra lens and accessories.Sony also make great cameras.

Solve : Can you read this??

Answer»

Can you read this?

I lost or forgot my password to a site I seldom visit.

Then they want me to read this so I can get the password.

I fail and fail time and again. I need some help in knowing how to read this. I am a sight reader, but also can read phonetically, but neither SKILL can help me here.

What am I doing wrong?
Well, these things can drive PEOPLE crazy sometimes. Here's what I see in that captcha:

havicli myth,

Apparently, a comma is that last character but I wouldn't bet on my interpretation of any captcha. I don't recall seeing PUNCTUATION marks used in them so I may be wrong about the comma; maybe it's just stray mark ADDED to confuse people. I also see havicli myth, and I too am uncertain about the comma. I would expect the site to say something like "Please enter the characters you see including any punctuation" if such was liable to appear.
If I were you, and had problems seeing the captcha, I would just click on Audio to get an audio challenge. Many of the sites that use captcha have a button that lets you retrieve another group of letters, and I've had to do that several times when I couldn't make out what the letters were. Some of them are very difficult to read even if you have good eyesight.Capchas can be terrible to decipher if you are using an LCD screen at other than native resolution.
Thanks fellows.
I finally decided to just get a new hotmail account.

And this time I ignored spaces and figures scrambled beyond human recognition. And it worked. I will just forget my old account.

As for the audio, I must have seven audio codes on this machine, and it tells me to down load another player for a WAV file. Like I never before ever played a WAV file? An the audio was at first clear, then very poor.

There has to be a better way.

Maybe it should ask you to open your microphone -
and o SING a few bars of -
"You are my Sunshine."

Solve : CompTIA online Training and Certification?

Answer»

Hello everyone,
I would like some help concerning the CmpTIA certification, i am currently interested in A+ CompTIA certification, can someone PLEASE direct me to a website where i can register, pay and study online. Or do i have to go to a CompTIA Training Center?
I would like to study at my own pace via online and then write the CompTIA Exams and receive the certificate up on completion.

Thanks TRY BrainBench///Thanks Patio,
I guess Brainbench is more of a Testing center instead of what i am really looking for, a website where training and testing is offered followed by a certification, up on completion.

More help is appreciatedLino124

Not sure if you have found your answer yet but there are a number of online courses out there. Just check with local colleges and learning centres, just be careful as some of them are just terrible. There are a few places that are even boot camp, these places are very pricy. go to www.comptia.org and register and you get more information. The site even has an area where you can do pratice exams. due a google search and see where if there a local learning centre near you, try to find some books. I myself did an online course and used a couple of books which helped get my A+ Cert.

Hope that helps.Just remember that completing a course does not mean you will be CERTIFIED. I know there are some places that offer the course (correspondance as well) and then say that you are qualified.
This is not the case, you must write the International Exam - at a recognised testing center.
The CompTIA site should give you all the relevant informationSorry to BUMP this but as a noob I didn't want to start a new thread

I have been volunteered by my manager to do a comp tia course for our department. The last person they trained left to have a baby and never came back, so as it currently stands nobody in my department is comp tia certified.

I don't want to let everyone down, is this a fairy easy course to pass?

Thanks

Is there a specific job requirement that you need the A+ for?

You'd do well to get a more specific cert; like watchguard or SONICWALL or cisco ceritifications. If you are a working IT Tech, then you will find the course easy, but if you have no IT experience it can be quite daunting.
I think that a cisco certification is a little more challenging than A+I had experience before I considered doing my CompTIA A+. To prepare, all I did was buy a book and read through it. CompTIA A+ Certification for Dummies actually. It was quite well written and explains all the stuff you need to know. There are other books out there like that, but make sure you get one that covers the new tests (they changed the test 3 or 4 years ago). I took mine while they were still on the older, easier test.

Solve : Best tablet pc??

Answer»

Hey guys im looking to buy a tablet pc and im wondering if anyone has any reccomendations?

Im looking for something with a touch screen and a keyboard , preferatbly with a seperate touchpad too. something like the Toshiba Protege M200. It also has to have some DECENT specs (>1.5GHz) and must be ready to install an os to (i have linux PUPPY , slax , ubuntu whatever) .

I DO NOT want an android.

Im open to offers too CNET has a review and compares other tablets.
http://reviews.cnet.com/Toshiba_Portege_M200_tablet_PC/4505-3126_7-30596988.html

CNET seems to favor the Motion LE1600. I have no idea, but the price is outside of my comfort zone.
Anyway, here is short video of it ...
http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/motion-le1600-pentium-m/4505-3121_7-31391885.html?tag=contentBody;similarProdsMy HP tm2 has served me PRETTY well. It's touch screen is very responsive and if you can get past the fact that it doesn't have dvd drive then it's a nice option.

Something like this:

http://www.tabletpcbuzz.com/forum/uploaded/Mr%20H/200446142230_rmTPC.jpg

very nice even if i do say so myself

The guy also gave me a spare BATTERY with it so 2x3hour runtime

well chuffed If you don't want android then the best thing would be to go for Dell (http://www.dell.com/ca/p/inspiron-duo/pd). Their tablet pc has Windows 7 and is duo convertible which is something in the middle between a netbook and a tablet.

thanks adamIf you recieved a set of Recovery CD's with the machine boot to the recovery CD and run setup...
This will take the machine back to Day One status.

NOTE: All your data and apps will be GONE so backup what you need...no i dont have the cd s , is there any thing else i can do thanks You can purchase a retail copy of an OS, boot to that disc, format and install. As mentioned by patio above, be sure to backup all critical data first. Also CHECK your Owners Manual...you may have a hidden Recovery partition which will accomplish the same thing...

Solve : NOOB WANTS TO LEARN ABOUT COMPUTERS!?

Answer»

hey i'm just wondering where a 13 year old kid can start learning loads about computers. i mean, i understand them fairly well, just want to get into some FANCY stuff

i think that they're really cool and i'm really interested in programming and hacking. things i don't understand are things like proxies, ip addresses, and all that jazz. while i wait for an answer, i shall GOOGLE my answers! and i apologize i think i put this under the wrong topic sorry BOUT that!I think you got it right in your second post. Google the SUBJECT in which you are interested and go from there.Get an old or used computer and try your hand at installing windows, getting drivers, just testing things out and messing things up and trying to fix them.

I think I started on computers when I was around your age, maybe younger and that's mostly what I did. I had my own PC that I would constantly re-tweak DOS and SCREW around with the drivers, etc. (we didn't have windows back then).

Solve : Sharper Image WonderWall Projector?

Answer»

Can the WonderWall Projector be connected to a laptop for presentations? ThanksDo you have any specific model in mind?I was wondering the same THING. The projector also goes by the Shift3 XL-90 name.
I was hoping to use it with my Dell mini for informal powerpoint presentations.

Any thoughts on if it will work or what adapting CABLES I would need???

Thank you for your time.

Here are the "specs" ... With its on-board inputs you can easily connect your media components to the Wonderwall™ projector via the included A/V cable. Enjoy full color video from TV, DVD players, VCRs, video game consoles, camcorders and more. It features three A/V inputs, built-in stereo sound with adjustable volume, contrast and color controls, audio out, manual focus lens, and utilizes a standard 50W/12V MR-16 halogen bulb for hours of supersized fun. Includes a pivoting bracket/carry handle for easy picture adjustment, AC adapter and cooling fan. Measures 14" L x 9" W x 11" H.
Technically, you COULD do this IF you can output your video to a TV monitor. For example, my Dell 1525 has an S-Video out port, and I bought a cable that adapts S-VIDEO to the RCA plugs which then goes into my TV (or my WonderWall).

Whether your laptop's video card supports this is the real issue, and it's not always easy to find.

Next though, have you ever seen the projection PUT out by the WonderWall? I've found it OK for instances where resolution isn't a priority (e.g. watching Disney movies), but I'd be concerned about projecting text or any small details in a presentation.

If I could suggest one other option: you could create a CD or DVD of presentation (there are programs available that can, for example, create a DVD from a Powerpoint document). That way a simple DVD player could show the presentation, but this would not get around the resolution and low brightness of the Wonderwall. The quality wont be high at all... small text will be HARD to read.

This is moreso related to the dots per inch than resolution, however, its a combination of both.

It certainly would work, however, it wont be the greatest looking thing on earth.
Should work fine for video. Just in case any others are wondering on how to do this...I did get it to work but as I assumed from reviews of the projector; the quality was very low. I purchased a PC to TV converter at Radio Shack ($60) because I couldn't find a simple cable any where local in time for the presentation.

I would not use it for powerpoint again except for an emergency (as was my case in the beginning of all this) but it does work good for games, movies, slide shows, ect. We often race at tracks without power so it will be nice to charge up the laptop and watch a movie in the trailer. You would need an adapter like one of these, http://www.amazon.com/VideoSecu-VGA2TV-Computer-Presentation-Converter/dp/B000X3FAJU

I would agree that the image quality would not be that great.

Your better bet would be to get something like a micro projector that has VGA connection like the AAXA M2 http://www.amazon.com/AAXA-M2-Micro-Projector/dp/B004BM2OS4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1302800831&sr=1-1

Solve : Clearing suspect files from user folders (whatever that means)?

Answer»

Not really a question for the virus board as there is nothing that needs solving.
I read on a totally different SITES board another way to check for viruses or suspect FILES was to -
"Boot the computer in safe mode and do a search for everything created within a few days before the virus arrived.
Delete everything in any user folder (except known good docs and photos) together with any odd program folders".
Now, whilst l myself always use this site, l'm just questioning that statements validity. What exactly is a user folder then?
If l do a search, l get the following paths ------
C:\Documents and Settings\\Application Data\.......etc
C:\Documents and Settings\\Recent\...................etc
C:\Documents and Settings\\Local Settings\............etc
C:\Documents and Settings\\Favorites\............etc
- and so on.
Surely these are all user folders and if everything was deleted, then that would cause ONE big headache!
Could someone please confirm whether l am reading this right.
ThanksIgnore the information from the other board. It's not only wrong, it's stupid. Thanks for the quick reply Allan (just as l thought!)
Can you just confirm though, those paths that l LISTED that have my name in them, are they classed as "user folders" (sorry if that's a dumb question)
RegardsC:\Documents and Settings\username
is the user folder. Everything within that are user's folders. Many thanks Allan.
Over and out!
RegardsYou're welcome.

And btw - correct military radio parlance is simply "out", not "over and out". Just a bit of totally unnecessary information I thought I'd pass on (I was responsible for the battalion command net back in my days in the service).

Look in your manual. You can not just hit F5, it has to be an extended function key. The regular keys are reserved for windows and programs. The extended function is done with a special key you have to press while you hit the function key. This is climacteric to laptop computers.thanks for the help but i dont have the manual any more so i guess just will have to get the screen fixed. thankyou Your Manual should be available as a DLoad online from the manuf. site...ive been told to try and put it on sleep mode could this help?? Solve : Why is there "OFFICE12" folder inside Office 2003 installation location?

Answer»

I wasn't sure exactly where to post this, so if it needs to be redirected, let me know.

If you are using Office 2003, you will see that there is a folder named "OFFICE11" in your INSTALLATION location. For example, in my case it would be:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office

There is no folder named "OFFICE12" in there. But I've seen some computers where the user has Office 2003 installed, but along with "OFFICE11" folder, there is also folder named "OFFICE12" in there.

I couldn't find out why that folder is in there. Could anyone explain?

My best guess would be that the users must have installed SOMETHING belonging to the 2007 version of Office.
What files do the OFFICE12 folder contain?OFFICE12 folder is related to Office 2007. There are probably install files in there. Also probably has something to do with the compatibility pack for office 2003 to read office 2007 files, if you have that installedThere important programs for office 2003

DO not DELETE!The Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack installs the folder "Office12". This allows those with Office 2003 products to view files in Office 2007 format. This is a very USEFUL, and free, software update. It may be found at:

Solve : Off and On Problems?

Answer»

Hello all!

Three weeks ago I was playing a game of Solitaire when my computer went click and I said to myself "My computer just shut down! But how can that be, I still have graphics! And my mouse can move the cursor! Very strange!" I kept on playing and then it happened again. Click, whir down, whir up. Then again and again until Windows shut down and gave me a stop error.
The first thing I did was to backup my most recent work and then I researched the stop error. The next day I was told that what I was hearing was my harddrive stopping and starting so I researched that. Thanks to the advice I have found in old threads I have spent three weeks running Malwarebytes, SAS, Kaspersky's Rescue disk, HJT ( then I learned how to read a HJT log), the manufacturer's diagnostic on my harddrive, Memtest (both of these passed), removing peripherals and programs (although I never did find a way to disable caching or shadowing), and researching the various stop errors I have gotten in the process. During this process it has had periods of running just fine and then all of a sudden it starts misbehaving again.
It has done the Click, whir down, whir up (or not even back up again) in normal, safe and even with prewindows disks like Recovery Console. The click sound is EXACTLY the last sound you hear when your computer shuts off so I think it is the computer stopping and starting not the harddrive. This has lead me to believe that the Windows errors are the result of a hardware issue. If my logic is incorrect someone wiser than I should set me straight on this.
Since my harddrive and memory both passed I started thinking about the Power Supply Unit. Then I started thinking about one year ago when I GOT this computer.
When I first got it I set it up, checked it out and turned it off. Awhile later I passed the room and it was on again. I figured that I must have hit restart so I shut it down again, paying close attention to what I was doing, but after an hour or so it came back on again. I researched it but never found an answer so I just got in the habit of shutting off the power bar. When you restore power it turns on, does a self test and turns off again (according to the IBM SITE this is correct procedure) and I must turn it back on to use it.
Then yesterday a new development. I got it going and it seemed to be fine but when I shut it down, turned off the monitor and stood up, it turned on again!
There is no burning smell which I read is a major indicator of PSU trouble.
I just don't know what to do next. Any thoughts?
Sure sounds like PSU to me.
I know very little about Power Supply Units. I was given a computer sans a harddrive that I can steal the PSU from. Are they universal or are there compatibility issues. I don't know how to swap a PSU but I suppose I can learn. I just don't want to fry anything, including me!Quote from: techgranny on January 30, 2011, 02:52:21 PM

There some variations, most are ATX of some sort. Need to know more about both computers in order to advise further. Is there a way to find out what we need to know without booting?
Obviously it is a wee bit difficult to boot the one without a harddrive and I am not sure if or when the other will be kind enough to let me do anything. Do not do the swap if one of the computers is a Dell.
Neither one is a Dell but now you have me wondering why it would matter. I am a very curious person!

My computer is an IBM/Lenovo ThinkCentre MTM 8189-R1U
2.8 GHz CPU 40 GB HDD 512 MB RAM ( which I am hoping to double )
I am running XP SP3, 1 CD/DVD ROM, Floppy Drive, WebCam, download & charge a digital camera from USB and a standard keyboard and mouse.

The label on the PSU I want to put in, which comes from a custom built computer, says it has 250W DC Output. The one I am replacing says it will not exceed 230W DC Output.

If that is enough output, the connectors fit and it will fit in the case, am I good to go?

Neither one is a Dell but now you have me wondering why it would matter. I am a very curious person!

Because there was a period when Dell were making desktop machines with motherboards and PSUs with standard connectors which were wired in a non-standard way. That is, they looked just like everybody elses parts but Dell motherboards or PSUs could not be mixed with normal standard ones. The combination would not work, but not only that, on applying power, usually the motherboard would be ruined permanently and very often the PSU too. I understand that Dell have switched over to using industry standard wiring these days, but with older equipment it is worth making sure before proceeding.

I’m glad I asked! If I swap this PSU successfully I probably would think I know everything I needed to know about the subject and wouldn’t bother asking for future projects. Is Dell the only one who got creative or are there other dangers that you know of lurking around the corner? Also, since the PSU I want to use is in a custom build is it possible that it may be Dell? As far as I know It was only Dell that used non standard PSU / motherboard pin arrangements. Dell assemble computers bearing their own brand, they do not supply parts to system builders so I would not expect a PSU in a custom build to be a Dell, and also a Google search reveals that the nonstandard arrangements were from 1998 to 2002 approximately.
Whew! Finally done shoveling snow! Sorry if I left anyone hanging. Now back to the computer……
Thanks for the help everyone, and especially ST for expanding my knowledge. I guess I’m as ready as I’ll ever be! Wish me luck!
I am writing this for anyone who runs a search on .....Computer powers on by itself .... or Computer shuts down.
After three months of TRYING to find my problem, SUCCESS! I learned a lot about Power Supplies but it wasn't that either. It turned out to be the PATA ribbon connector cable. A three dollar part!
The bad news is that in trying to figure it out my computer shut down unexpectedly so many times that the harddrive was damaged. It still works but diagnostic tests find unrepairable errors and warn of imminent failure. Oh well, I wanted more space anyway! I got a REALLY good price on a 500GB internal harddrive and slaved it to my 40GB. I work on a computer that has been forecasting immanent failure for three years now so I am leaving my OS and programs on the 40GB until it actually dies but my documents will be safely backed up.
Once again thanks for the education and guidance. I hope my experience can help someone else.

It's accurate. SATA is a SPECIFICATION, it declares how the hardware WORKS. What SOFTWARE interacts with the hardware is irrelevant, as long as it works to that specification.

Solve : How to open these unreadable images??

A friend of MINE was given a CD by the doctor with her X-rays on it - but she can't open them.

Here is a print screen of the folder:

What can I do? What programme can I use to open it? She wants to know if she broke her foot differently to last time.

Thanks!Have her call the Doc and find out how the images were made...

Your SCREENSHOT does not show the file extension...Open the file with notepad or a hex editor. READ the first few characters. Google them. Find out the file type and program used to open it.Isn't there a viewer program on the CD? This is quite usual.

Solve : Bravo, Microsoft?

Answer»

I know a lot of people love to hate Microsoft, but they just went the extra mile to help me out so the LEAST I can do is give them a good word.

I’ve been using Microsoft Security Essentials [MSE] antivirus for several months because it’s had such good reviews. It’s been GREAT until two weeks ago when I noticed the program wasn’t running for some reason.
No problem, I though, just start it manually…………………. ‘ERROR – program will not start’.
OK, I thought, Reboot…………. still won’t run.
Re-install?.............. ‘ERROR – installation cannot be completed’.
Unistall?............. ‘Removal cannot be completed’.

After fruitless Googling for remedies, I put in a support request on the MSE web page. The next day I got an email from Microsoft Customer Support with detailed troubleshooting instructions. Unfortunately, none of it helped, so I let them know. They sent another long list of fixes to try, and then another, and then another. Each time I worked through their suggested fixes, but always received error messages or other problems.

Their final email asked me to name a date and time that a technician could telephone me. Puzzled, but willing to try anything, I agreed on a 2-hour window the upcoming Friday. Sure enough, a technician called, told me he could remotely access my machine and troubleshoot the problem.

To make a long story short, the technician spent the next 4 hours sorting through program and system files and what seemed like a HUNDRED registry keys, making sure everything was OK and finally deleting and re-installing the program, downloading new virus SIGNATURES and initiating a scan.

So, say what you will about Microsoft; I was very impressed that they would devote that much personal attention to one customer to support a free program. Thank you, Microsoft, for super support!

Good post. Thank you for sharing that.
Now it I could get..
the local Social Security Office ..
to give me that kind of attention Unlike most people, I actually have nothing against Microsoft. They have some of the best customer service I've ever used. I was pretty surprised the first time I ever called them; I had lost the product key and they gave me a new one after verifying that I had a legal copy of the game. Nice and simple. I've had a few run-ins with them, legal and otherwise, but I feel like they've redeemed themselves plenty over the years. They've also got some great PR's over there, and I'm not just saying that because they give me free stuff (although it certainly helps). When I first saw the topic title, I thought it was sarcastic and the post was going to be a rant

Solve : Best RTS Games for low spec tablets??

Answer»

Some of you might remember i posted a question about goot TABLETS to buy and i got some redirects from that BUT when i saw an AD for an RM Tatung Tablet for £60 , i couldnt resist. So i bought that and IM now using it in school and at home too/ Its great for taking notes and red alert 2 is very good as a BREAK filler.

Everything is working , OS fully installed and all features appear to work (including the function buttons!) and after a wee bit of playing with microsoft journal i decided to install red alert 2 onto the tablet , which worked fine , so i ventured deeper into games that could work. Age of Empires 1 + 2 , Tropico 1 , Microsoft Tablet Power Toys (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/tabletpc.mspx) , inkball games like that.

Those all worked absolutely fine! so i ventured EVEN DEEPER

I then started to find some things start to slow down a bit:

Homeworld 2 - lowest settings - slow but not unplayable
Warrior Kings - works fine on lowest setting but cant use right mouse button

Heres the specs of the tablet

900MHz Intel Celeron
512MB RAM (upgraded)
40GB HD
S3 IV Graphics (OpenGL / Direct3D / not sure about DirectX)

tablet runs Red Alert 2 very very well. I can successfully run Warrior Kings and Homeworld 2 (but framerates are choppy) BUT the right mouse button does not work with a tablet (right click is difficult with my tablet since it doesent have a right mouse button button so i can only click and HOLD which isnt suitable at all for rts games.

Up till now ive been using RTS Games.org (http://rtsgames.org/) and im still browsing it. but now im looking for suggestions. What games were good and which were bad back in 1995 > 2003 pc wise XD

So basically the only requirements is that game has to be mouse only (point/click type interface) no use of shift key or ctrl key or whatever. just pure mouse control.

Age of empires worked with right mouse button but i changed it to work with only left mouse button by selecting the option in the options menu (single button mouse i think it was) , just FYI

Thanks in advance,

jimbo8098You could try earlier Command & Conquer games as well- Tiberian Dawn, Red Alert 1, Tiberian Sun, etc.it hasn't been released yet, but I hear there will be a game of Perigon you'll be able to play.

Solve : Preloaded HD boot problem?

Answer»

Hello All

I am having difficulty in trying to figure out a problem, I was given an older compaq system that has been preloaded with windos xp home sp2. The computer works fine but my intention was to take the hd out of the case and put it into a more powerfull system. I didn't want to reload anything upon doing that, during the post i will the options to boot into safe mode, load with last known good configuration...

Upon either SELECTING the last known or safe mode options, the system will boot back to the same screen. If I put the hd back in the original system, everything works fine.

Can SOMEONE suggest what I am either:

-overlooking
-what needs to be changed
-options

Thanks in advance for the help.you cannot take a hd from one system, put it in another, and expect it to boot. You need to reinstall the OS. Allan

While there is some point of view in which are correct that I cannot see, I will have to disagree with you on that. Simply for the following reason but first here is the scenerio, my previous mobo died along with the processor. the hd was fine, so I bought a new barebones kit, INSTALLED my hd and pressed the button. low and behold everything worked fine with the exception of reinstalling some drivers. and this was a year and half ago and till this day i have not had any problems with the hard drive with exception of some general maintenance. (by the way this is the computer I work on everyday)

I am open to any/all suggestsionsDuring the installation of the OS, the hardware components of your system are noted and copied to a file in the OS. If you then remove the hd and put it in another system, the OS will not boot. But please, feel free to disagree to your heart's content.Quote from: kevin4174 on April 03, 2011, 02:14:19 PM

Allan said "you cannot take an hd from one system and expect it to boot." He is right. You would be silly to think that it will always (or even often) result in a bootable system. It might, but there is no guarantee. The generally accepted wisdom is that a Windows install adapts itself to the hardware it finds, and therefore swapping the system drive to another hardware setup probably won't work. Sometimes it will, as you describe. If the hardware is very similar, same chipset family, or a slightly different model from the same maker, you can get lucky and just need to get a few drivers. Also the hardware signature will be sufficiently altered that Windows will need re-activating. BUT this is unusual. Not, as Allan correctly says, something you can "expect". In particular a disk from an "older Compaq system" in a randomly chosen other system is unlikely to work.

Correct. It's the same as changing hw components in your current system. Up to a point you can and there will be no repercussions. But if you change certain components - or too many - the OS will not boot. You will have to do a repair install or a new install. Are you guys agreeing or disagreeing ? ?

Absolutely.Gotcha...All

Thanks for the comments and INFO, I will keep this in mind for the future, I guess I just have to count my BLESSINGS that my computer is working.

As for the older compaq machine, i really don't have the original cd that came with the machine, as I said this computer was given to me as is.

The only question I do have is this when patio asked the question "Are you guys agreeing or disagreeing" and Allen you replied "Absolutely", I am kind of curious what your answer was. I was agreeing with Salmon Trout's post immediately above mine.

Solve : Copying Error: cyclic redundancy check?

Answer»

Hello All

This is the first TIME seeing this error message while copying a file. What I am doing is trying to copy some avi FILES from a cd to my HD and while copying the file i recevied the following error.

Cannot copy file/data: Data Error (cyclic redundancy check)

Is this a os problem, a ram problem and/or disc problem

Also while copying some files, the system becomes sluggish to respond

Running Winxp pro sp3
4 gigs ram
120 WD 7200 rpm hd

You should consider the problem as a fatal error. Not fatal to you OS, but the data is CORRUPTED beyond reasonable recovery.

But, here are a few this you can try with hardware.
1. Get a new CD reader. or borrow one.
2. Go to a local Drugstore and buy a kit to polish the surface of the CD. Sometimes that really works.

Otherwise, trying to override the CRC in software will almost always often give you trashed data.http://www.wikihow.com/Copy-a-File-and-Ignore-Cyclic-Redundancy-Check-ErrorsGeek-9pm

So are you suggesting that the data on the cd has become corrupted and unrecoverable?

How does this happen as I am unsure. Can you explain. is it age of disc? Is this this machine ? ?

If so why does the advice not work ? ?patio

there was nothing wrong with advice. I was just MERELY making sure I understood the what was said correctly thats all.

Solve : Is AIM Mail the same as AOL Mail?

I have an aim account (ptownRan-----) and an aol account (ptownRan-----).
The aim account came about when aol took over netscape. The problem. I never signed up for ptownRan---- and it's not an official aol account. Someone has hacked into it and using it. The return emails show up in my aim account.

Is ptownRan------ the same as ptownRan------? Can I delete the ptownRa------ without it affecting my aim account? The catch 22 - I can't contact aol because I don't officially have an aol account. If I'm able to delete the aol account, how do I do that. I've tried several different methods and can't connect because I don't have an official account. Many thanks.

Multiple email addy's TEDIOUSLY removed to prevent SPAM...They are essentially the same thing, they use the same mail service it's just that the DOMAIN the email is REGISTERED under is different. You could create a new AOL account to contact them on this. If they are unable to help you, and you are unable to find out how to delete the AOL account, if possible you can try blocking the address the return emails come from. Thanks for your help. So if the domain is different, can I delete the aol account without affecting my aim account? Also, since the aol account's return emails are showing up on my account, do they have ACCESS to my aim account? You're talking about AOL Mail and AIM as though they were the same thing. They are not. AIM means AOL Instant Messenger. So, I don't know why you're even mentioning here, since your issue is email, not IM (Instant Messaging).

There's a standoff in there in the wrong position. Remove it. It's shorting out the motherboard.ok so loosen the tork and take which out? i have them in the holes that line up underneath. How to Install a Motherboardi forgot to use screw nuts under the motherboard and only used screws. the only difference is that mine dos not have a removable metal plate under the motherboard.

I am correct- screw nuts under the motherboard and screws through the top to give it the space. that would give me 5 screws to ho;d the board down.Screw nuts are also called standoffs, 1 for every metalized hole in the motherboard, which should have 6.got ya. i just took the motherboard out and put in the 6 standoffs. now i am putting the motherboard back and will screw it in. that worked. i tried to turn it on twice and it didnt.....now it worked with adding the standoffs. did i screw up the motherboard or the couple times wont matter. The psu is designed to shutdown in the event of a short circuit. Just like a circuit breaker in your house & for the same reason, don't want to START a fire.

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Download-Firefox-2-0-in-Windows-Vista-without-Touching-IE7-or-Any-Other-Browser-74724.shtml

That requires CMD and some little code

But in a reality, your computer should work right out of the box so that's that.If you have a Linux live CD you have a browser.

I was thinking about it for a bit, but I think that Microsoft originally started including IE with Windows for more reasons then to increase it's browser market share- I mean, think about it- if you don't have a browser- how can you go an download one? You would need to go and buy one or download one somewhere else and bring it home, much easier with a built-in browser.

And other thin is, I know it is microsoft's browser and microsoft probably wants to use its own products but WHY IE? Couldn't Microsoft not have installed/coded IE into the system and simply gave you some options so you can choose the browser you want instead of having to open up IE the very first time your computer loads to get to the web?I use IE For three reasons:

1. I'm in Windows 7, and a lot of sites dont accept my user agent string, and Firefox's user agent tools are a bit funky, and they wont allow you to INSTALL addons. I use IE for getting past these issues.

2. I use IE when some website is really goofed up, and just wont display in FireFox.

3. Most important, I use IE to download FireFox on a fresh install of Windows.
Win 7 is not at the RTM stage, so i'm gonna say all the programs have not been developed (or should i say formally tested) for win 7.I have to say:
I will never go back to Vista.

Windows 7, I have been using since two weeks before this topic started... I think I've done all the testing I can, and theres only one major bug I have encountered, when I plug in a second monitor, my computer crashes....

Also, the Sims 2 wont run, but, I researched this, and I seem to be the only one having this issue, it probably just requires a reinstall. Quote from: m_260 on March 14, 2009, 03:12:47 PM
Without codecs? I bet it's that Microsoft finally decided to include codecs into WMP so that you don't have to go picking up one.

Unpin from taskbar, you can do that for internet explorer for any normal windows operating system. What I meant was you could go to features and disable it so that your PC will never use internet explorer and that there's no sign internet explorer exists unless you renable it.

Unpining from taskbar I think just removes the icon but PC can still access internet explorer, you can still find it and whatnot
Yes that is true, sorry.

And I shouldn't say without codecs...I mean I don't have to find any myself. When I Was talking about integrated browsers- I was specifically referring to Windows 95.

at the time the main two browsers were IE and netscape- I don't believe netscape was free when 95 was released to MS just used their free browser.

I might also note that 95 wasn't exactly feature-packed as far as network tools were concerned.

Obviously your solution to avoid IE works great for XP and up (probably W2k and NT4) but really they (except NT4) include IE already, so may as well just browse to the FF download page.Someday, maybe Microsoft will just start putting FireFox on Windows computers...
Someday...
Maybe...

Did Windows NT 4.0 come with any sort of browser?

Did Windows NT 4.0 come with any sort of browser?

Not that I'm aware, at least not on any of the fresh installs I've done... which is only one, admittedly.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 16, 2009, 09:34:12 AM
which is only one, admittedly.
I doubt you would have wanted to do a bunch of those though...

I remember my school had a few NT 4.0 computers, they were a pain, yet, still FUN to use. They were mainly used for library catalogue computers.
the most INTRIGUING NT would have to be 3.51. I mean, it's win32- but at the same time- it has the windows 3.1 look! In fact, AFAIK Visual Basic 5, Office 95 and 97, and other newer programs will actually run in it- some of them look very strange with the old window style...3.51?
The highest of the 3 series I have ever heard of is Windows 3.11 for Workgroups, my favorite OS. Windows NT 3.51, yes.

Windows NT was a separate line from the get-go, with NT 3.1 being the result of Microsoft's broken dealings with IBM regarding OS/2. NT 3.5, and 3.51 followed.

This is originally how the whole separate lines started- they had 3.1 and it's predecessors for "consumers" and NT mostly for corporate environments.
This was a Pain in the but for everybody- MS had to maintain to distinct codebases, and programmers had to try to KEEP track of all the subtle nuances between the two implementations of the API. And once windows 95 was released there were two completely separate implementations of the Win32 API. Even now every single function in the API that accepts a string has both a Unicode and an ANSI version, except for those newer API's released in Vista.

Solve : Buggy sh**?

Since the bug's come back and I can't be arsed waiting for it to be resolved I'll just post my PM in a public thread (Some improvement..)

This was to Doofus Hopefester:

I'm removing my account.

Nathan doesn't seem to be changing back anytime soon. Dummy2K was right, it's a horrible disfiguration and its slick and sharp design gave me a headache straight from the start.

I would have stuck around to get help with Linux, but with looks like these; they're not going to attract any serious computer users (as most of 'm really are visually impaired..) ....

See you around, Doofus. E-mail me to <e-mail removed> if you ever need help or add me to MSN: <e-mail removed>

None of the morons that I've seen posting here deserve my assistance - they come here, demand help ASAP and then have the audacity to not report back? Screw 'm, I think technology and information should be free but that doesn't mean any idiot should be able to use it.
