I've got a few questions/comments about how the forums are handling the time ZONES. The forums have the OPTION of SETTING your own personal timezone through your

This is my first TIME using this website. I have a question. Is a plug and play device necessary for a computer to function when running windows xp? In other words could I delete this from my computer and will it still run normally? Have a PROBLEM I hope someone can HELP me with. :-/

I have downloaded an .exe program from a friend, and when I try to open it, I get the External Exception EO6D7363 error message.

I've opened other .exe programs from this PERSON before, and have not had any problems.

Have installed the LATEST VERSION of WinZip, thinking that might be the problem, but it doesn't help.

The exe file was sent through AOL, and I couldn't open it, so I tried through Yahoo - still no luck.

Computer (old) running W98 SE, but have high-speed internet connection. :-/

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

The Q&A forum seems to have lost a little momentum. I'd like to try and kickstart it back up again.

A lot of the threads have been sitting dormant for quite a while now, so I've gone in and COMPILED and locked them. I have also created an INDEX of sorts which I hope will serve as a somewhat functional search tool for the Q&A Forum. I think we have the START of something half decent here.

I would encourage everyone to continue submitting new topics and solutions on common and recurring problems. If you do this, I'm happy to do the legwork of compiling and editing the posts as I have time to do so.

I have a new computer that was set up for Microsoft Outlook Express. I have always used Outlook Express so I thought I was making a shortcut for that email. Unfortunately, when I made OE my default mail, the Misrosoft OE emails went into the DARK hole somewhere. Is there a way to recover all the emails that were in it?When I bring it up now, it presents itself as a new mail server and wants to be "setup". Go to Tools --> Optionsa and Maintenance folder to see Store Folder and see the folder where your messages must be stored. Check that folder , if there remain your mails etc.

And be careful there are two Application Data Folder.
One is directly under your user name like:
E:\Documents and Settings\elman\Application Data

and SECOND is under Local Settings folder which is hidden as well. The path you must be looking for is like:
E:\Documents and Settings\elman\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{19FDE88A-7693-43E7-8FFF-0C747678CEE0}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

These are for mine and default for many.

1. If you have a backup, RESTORE the file to a safe location.

2. Use the command prompt to navigate to the locked folder; try moving the file somewhere else

3. Bring up the PC in safe mode; use Windows Explorer to navigate to the locked folder; drag it somewhere else

4. If you have ME or XP, try doing a system restore to a DATE before the software was installed

5. Recreate the file

6. Register the product!

Hello all.

I require some HELP. Now this is a strange one.

i went on limewire and downloaded a Family Guy clip.

I then went into my downloads folder to play it but nothing happens.

If you right click on the file all you see is Play, Open, Open with you know stuff like that.

So now i want to delete it because i think its a virus.

I have run virus scans and nothing was found.

I went to the folder itself and SAID delete but it deleted everything in the folder apart from that file, It throws up a error window saying the file can not be deleted but it called it a different name.

I also did a System Restore but the file is STILL there.

Is there anyway i can delete this file?

R0SSHave you tried deleting it from safe mode or command prompt? Run all your scans from safe mode. If there is something fishy in restore files, turn of system restore and rerun the scans in safe mode.It'll remain a mystery file until you tell us the extension.

I'm an artist with a ton of image files created with C. Print House. My old Epson Printer failed and I bought an HP. When I tried printing it took 5 to 15 minutes to produce an image. Thinking it was the printer I returned it and bought a Cannon. Same thing happened. Cannon Tech PROVED it wasn't the printer, but the Old Corel. Corel tech said they no longer supported number 3 and didn't know to convert the images to another format or application for faster (normal)printing. I'm stuck! Search the web for a program that will 'convert' the format for you.

I opened THREE images in Corel "save as" and converted to jpg, then imported into Adobe Limited & printed from there. It worked. the 4th image, though (same routine) didn't pan out as it produced a fine stepdpown effect, which was hugely disappointing since it's an important art image for me. I'll try again tomorrow.

My last message was incorrect. My GOOD eyeglasses were broken--was wairing old, and when my wife saw the printouts she pointed out the fact that all the images had a somewhat finer stepdown, meaning they were useless. Meaning I have to buy a new program that will do what the Corel allowed, sizing, positioning, placing duplicates side-by-side on a single sheet, cropping, adding text, etc.
A couple of years ago I heard good things about Paint Shop Pro, and it wasn't too expensive. I was wondering if you had thoughts on the subject? Anxious to hear.

I was running on onboard graphics waiting for my new ATI Radeon X850XT.

So my new card comes I UNINSTALL my onboard VGA run Tuneup Utilities registry cleaner.

Hook my new card up.

Boot up my system...Passes POST...Gets to Windows XP logo and freezes, Safe MODE freezes also.

I ASK a buddy to look at it an he says its probably a power issue. So I go out and buy a new Antec NeoHE 500watt PSU and hook it up. Sadly it fixed nothing!

It will boot up fine without the card plugged in so Im guessing I have a defective graphics card.

My problems began when I brought a couple of COMPUTERS and THIER monitors down to my basement after being in use in my upstairs computer room. dgilesMore likely a bad connection to the VIDEO card, or in the MOVE the video card became unseated from it's socket. Just moving a monitor should not matter. Can you OPEN a case (with the power off!) and check the connections/ What computer make/model?

The only way I've been able to close the box is to log off of windows and log on again. I ues windows Xp.thanks At least two possible causes have been identified (and they may be related): lack of sufficient resources and a possible trojan/spyware.

Your system is trying to start up another process and doesn't have the resources to run it and your current process both.

One solution happened to be updating your OS.

Another solved by running a good spyware/malware/virus scanner and removing anything potentially malicious.

How do you update an OS? I use Windows XP.
Also, I've run AVG anti virus and several adware programs and NOTHING has turned up yet to correct the problem. Still trying.The easiest way to update your OS is to use your update capability built in to your OS.

For Win XP, click on the Start>Windows Update
It will start your default browser and take you to the MICROSOFT Update Page. FOLLOW the prompts and download/install all the critical updates recommended. Other updates and drivers can be downloaded and installed as you choose. Make sure you do this for all drivers recommended.

If you have any difficulty or trouble understanding the process, let us know.

As far as scanning for malware/virus/adware - this is very important you do this (and regularly afterwards). It is an easy process and you WOULD be surprised how much crap can be loaded on your system.

BTW - make sure your OS is a legal/authenticated issue. If it is not, you will have problems with the update. If you have a Win XP Authentication sticker pasted to your PC, you are probably okay.

several adware programs but nothing seems to get rid of this error message. I'm a computer illiterate but I seem to think that it is embedded somehow or it reinfects after going online again. I won't give up .thanks for your help.

I recently downloaded some mp3 files/uploads from savefile.com and SAVED created desktop shortcuts, TODAY.. I come back to my COMPUTER, all the shortcuts aren't working and their original spot (which HAPPEND to be in that awful temp folder) are missing. are they lost forever? and how do I prevent this??

Since that time (2 yrs ago) I have gotten a new computer. I heard that they can track IP addresses. Is the IP address UNIQUE to the computer, connection, or both? Is your IP address stuck on the file that you shared forever? Or, since I no longer have any of the files or the same computer, is it still possible to be traced?I think you're safe. No need to change your name too! Besides, there are at least 20+ million other folks who probably also share your concern.

IP addresses aren't normally a part of a music file's structure or ID. I could be wrong, since who KNOWS what the big boys will try next.

Getting rid of Kazaa was probably one of the best things you could do for the health of your PC. It was/is pure bloatware designed to facilitate all forms of adware, spyware, malware and other junk. Although the actual file size(s) were small, it was capable of tying up your PC resources beyond belief.

Personal Commentary

I remember when CDs first came out. They were about $10-12 a pop. Since this was 2-3 times the cost of the same music on vinyl, the industry used the excuse that startup costs would be high for a while, but then the price would eventually go down. Well, 20+ years later, the prices are still high or even higher, so I figure the big studios and distributors still haven't recouped their big investments.

Where the money goes (approximately) when you buy a CD:
$0.07 media
$0.15 manufacturing
$0.25 artist(s)
$13.53 distributors, retailers, studios & stockholders

If the above doesn't bother you, consider that almost any current top rated movie can be purchased for around $15-20 (up to 9+ GB of quality data - 2-4 hrs), whereas, a double sided audio CD can cost you the same or even more (1-2 GB of quality data - 2- hrs). CERTAINLY the production costs for a top quality DVD movie is higher (much, much higher) than an audio CD.

Another point. I have purchased concert DVDs for less than the exact same audio CD. Sometimes much less.

I believe the differences are pure greed and what the uninformed market will bear. Is it a wonder that so much piracy exists?

DellI think an ISP can log user data for 6 months then dump it. That will probably change given the super powers AVAILABLE to Homeland Security in the USA. The Canadian will gov will put forward a bill soon that forces ISPs to log user data but it's expected to fail. Not that failing will stop them from doing it anyway.Actually, they can probably trace the very first E-mail you have ever written.

Okay, I have this IBM ThinkPad from a few years ago. Last year it started acting up, but I had it repaired EARLIER this year.

Now, I'm having problems with it again.

Whenever I start it up, it runs fine, and after the "Windows XP" logo with the little status bar, the screen simply turns black, giving no ACCESS to anything.

The only things STILL working is the backlight-adjustment and the overhead mini-light and the cursor arrow is still visible, but not functional.

Everytime I try to restart it, I get the same thing. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON, OR BETTER YET, KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS?!?!?! Try booting in Safe Mode by tapping F8 repeatedly whilst the machine is booting and select Safe Mode from the menu.
Does it boot up correctly in Safe mode?

How do I sum a column in Excel that is filled with the #N/A symbol...for example, I have a column with 52 cells. Of those 52 cells, right now only 3 have NUMERICAL values (that were GENERATED from lookup table), but the REST have the #N/A in them. Because all the cells do not have numbers in them, the column will not sum, THUS preventing me from further formulas...any help is appreciated.

On occasions the emails I send to groups are corrupted by what appears to be some editing controls that should be hidden. There are no signs of these in the emails I send out but they appear in the recipient emails. I have also EXPERIENCED the same problem with emails I received. I USE Yahoo MAIL most of the time. I OFTEN use WORD to draft out the email then copy it to Yahoo. This is a problem that has only arisen recently although I have been sending emails for years. And it is intermittent so I have been unable to discern the circumstances under which it occurs.

Also what are the specs of your printer, PC?Horizontal lines I presume? This problem is usually caused by low black INK but it wouldn't hurt to change the black and color ink.
