Solve : diskscan?

Answer»

Here is my pathetic story:

I was doing disk scan of C: drive. (from system tools> scandisk)

After going to 4% it again GOES to the begining.

Again it goes to 4% scanning and again goes to begining.

This continues.

What's wrong?shouvik........You might try reading this ....it may help you .

Scandisk keeps resetting because Windows is constantly performing background tasks that you are unaware of. Try this: Before the Windows splash screen appears (just as your computer starts to boot), keep hitting F8 on your keyboard REPEATEDLY. You'll get a MENU if you pressed F8 before the splash screen. Choose the Safe Mode OPTION to boot Windows into Safe Mode. Now run Scandisk, and it should perform without RESTARTING constantly.

Solve : DDR2 RAM and Illogical MoBos?

Answer»

I recently entered the FAST-paced world of DDR2 RAM, but that's not my issue.

My MoBo, built by a well known manufacturer (rhymes with my handle) has four memory slots. For convenience, I will use the following ACTUAL layout:
a b c d

When I purchased it used, it came with a 256 mb DDR2 RAM module (240 PIN) PC3200 installed in slot a above.

Figuring I couldn't run much beyond the OS with this little memory, I went out and finally found a matched pair of cards, each 512 mb PC4800 (they are still relatively hard to find).
Now I ask, where in the above slots would you put them? Assume I'm gonna reuse the 256 mb for the time being.

Well, we know the original was in a, so 1 card goes in there. Now the second?
How many of you answered slot b (like I did)? I did, and I put the 256 mb card in slot c.

I fire up the PC and a cursory look at BIOS tells me I now have nearly 1300 mb RAM. Fine and good. The machine is fast anyway, but now I can do all the multitasking I've dreamed about.

Some weeks later, without any problems, I test the RAM with CheckIt and lo and behold, RAM fails every test!

It turns out that: a =1, b=3, c=2, d=4 and I have installed them illogically as: 512 256 512 empty. My MoBo doesn't like that. It wants pairs in a & c and b & d.
I think I know the reason now, but what a way to lay out a board!
The reason? What do you think?

DellA= 512
C= 512
D= 256

patio. A= 512
C= 512
D= 256

patio. Did the manual not make any mentioning of how to install the memory?Quote

Did the manual not make any mentioning of how to install the memory?

Actually, no. The processor/chipset supports both DDR and DDR2 RAM. The original MoBo was designed for DDR, then they changed to DDR2. Anything I could find on the board (at the time) didn't show the layout and I didn't get any documentation with the used system.

I'm in the process of downloading the latest info, maybe they have it now.

Quote
A= 512
C= 512
D= 256

Almost. What works though is
a=512
c=512
b=256
d=empty

Again, I only mention this because it seems illogical to me. But, I'm an old goat with bad habits.

Solve : Old Stuff Question?

Hi, New to this forum But need to know some info about some old stuff. I have an IBM 7006-42T Unix box that does not have the KEYBOARD with it. It has a post CODE at boot-up of 262 which is a keyboard not CONNECTED or detected type failure. I have several keyboards with the PS/2 mini din connector, however, none of them are IBM keyboards. Does anyone know what I need to do to get a keyboard to be recognized at post? Also, I have a Compaq/Key Tronic E78722/LR69497 keyboard that has dip switches on the bottom side. Is there a setting that I could select to make this keyboard work with the IBM box?

Solve : downloading & combining files?

Answer»

I belong to a alt.binary newsgroup & am pretty good with music & image files. What I have trouble with is trying to figure out how to download and actually use movies & games...do I need ADDITIONAL software for iso files? I am using winrar & a download manager. Windows XP. Have tons of hard drive.(1000 gigs) I have lots of music. I am self TAUGHT & have had my computer for about a year & a half...so if anyone can help please keep it simple. Thanks a bunch.

SzpixmanWinRAR should have a utility that will open .ISO files

Somewhere in your WinRAR options, you will be able to find "File Associations". Check .ISO files
Save the SETTINGS, and from there, you should be able to open ISO files and extract them. (Be sure to put them in their own folder, ISO files are usually quite big)

If that does not work, or if you cant find File Associations, you can do this:

Right click the ISO file, and click "Open With..."
Find WinRAR on the list (you might have to click "Browse" to specify another program)
Click OK
Does it work now?

There are different formats of ISO files. Some of them can be open with PowerISO, or MagicISO, only (both of them not free).

Solve : flying with my external drive?

Answer»

Hi,

Hope this isn't too dumb a question. I'm MOVING cross country and will be flying. I would like to take my external back-up drive in my carry-on (I'm shipping my full computer SYSTEM via UPS ground) or purse. Am I being overly anxious to worry that the security x-rays in the airport could damage the data on my little back-up drive?

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Patricia

If XRays were harmful to hard drives i'm sure every laptop CARRIER in the last 20 years would have screamed about lost data by now.
What i would worry about though is shock from being bumped and jostled about...make sure to wrap it securely in bubble-wrap beforehand and contact the airline about the procedures for delicate electronic DEVICES...

P.S. Welcome Aboard and best of luck in your new place ! !Thanks for your quick response, PATIO. I sort of suspected that, given the prevalence of lap tops. But I didn't want to take any chances. I'll buble-it-up quite well and read up on the airline's advice on such equipment.

Solve : Can Someone Translate this to english Plz.?

Answer»

Firefox is a great browser, but it costs a lot in memory usage. It's not uncommon to see 50,000 KB of memory in use. While that can't be fixed completely, here's a way to cut down on memory usage when it's minimized:

1. Open a new tab.

2. Enter about:config into the Address Bar.

3. Right-Click in any empty space. CREATE a New Boolean.

4. Enter config.trim_on_minimize as the Boolean's name.

5. Set it to true.

Close and restart Firefox. You'll notice a sharp decrease in memory usage:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

it sounds great and everything. but how can i open a tab? what is empt space. what the *CENSORED* is boolean's name. where can i find all this plz.

kthx.
Open a new tab by hitting Ctrl+T.
And the Booelan's name is the name of the entry you crate when you right click empty space -> new -> Boolean when in about:config.
Does that help?dude how do you set the boolean to true? can someone just elaborate this simple tut?

thanks.Quote from: K!ra on November 13, 2007, 12:50:02 PM

how do you set the boolean to true?

When you right-click and create the boolean, a WINDOW will appear asking for the boolean name. After you enter "config.trim_on_minimize" and click ok, another window will appear. It will ask whether the boolean is true or false. Select "True" and click ok.

I hope this helps.thx buddy,

just finished doing it.

but still the memory consupmtion is 24,000 per one window of firefox and 39,000 if i open two

are these values normal? thx.Did you restart Firefox?

The memory usage is only trimmed when Firefox is minimized. When it is brought back into focus, the memory usage goes back up a bit.

My normal memory usage RUNS between 30,000 - 50,000 for one window and five tabs. When the memory usage gets high, I minimize the window and bring it back to focus. That cuts the memory usage back down to around 30,000.thanks Kip for the tips.

This firefox browser is an interesting & exciting labyrinth. much better than IE.
It never seizes to amaze me with all these add-ons and tricks and tips.....

I ll try doing what you said later when i get back home, as now i am working on a desktop with IE only.

Solve : techtard can't get mic to work?

Answer»

trying to get set up so i can skype. but my computer cannot "hear" my mic.

i have a pc. running windows xp. windows HELP leads me to believe that i do not have something enabled. it tells me i can enable/install using WORD. i don't have WORD. it tells me i can get set up via add/remove programs. but when i go there xp does not show up on my list of programs.

i freely confess to being a complete ignoramus when it comes to tech issues.

can anyone help my dumb *censored*, please?

thanx.

brainslam ....... Is it only skype that the mic isn't working with ?

If you go into control panel .... sound and audio device properties......... click the voice tab..... down at bottom ...find the "test hardware" button and click it ........ tell us what the wizard says.
Btw, do you know that your mic works ?
Where do you have the mic plugged in ?

dl65
i've never used voice on the computer before (this computer or any other). skype was to be my intro.

i did what you said and here's the reult:

the wizard could not complete the test because your voice was not detected.

it then tells me to make sure the mic is connected and turned on (the headset is plugged into the pink and green holes in the back of the computer and there is no on/off switch - also, when i blow into the mic i can hear it in the ear piece)

then the wizard tell me that if my voice is STILL not detected i will be able to hear what others are saying online but they will not hear me

thanx,

b

Search your the settings in your sound control software to see whether there's a microphone boost option. In my system, if I don't have that enabled, the mic is practically unusable. Here's a screen shot:

thank you. BUT... i can't even find that. yes, i'm that much of a techno-feeb.

i SEARCHED my hard drives for files that contain the words "microphone booster" and it turned up nothing.

any other ideas?

thanx,

b Searching the hard drive on the words "microphone booster"will not find this type of thing in your system. The reason is basically that the words "microphone booster", in the image I posted, are PART of the image; they can not be copied from that image as text.

Let's regroup here. I can not say for sure that you have a "microphone booster" feature in your system. This is going depend on the sound chip, sound driver and any sound software that's installed in your system. But, I believe "microphone booster" is a feature on many systems and, in those systems, it MUST be enabled in order for you to use your mic.

If you have a microphone booster option, the panel where you enable it may look quite different from mine. Again, it's going to depend on the specific sound software installed in your system.

Let's see whether we can determine exactly what sound device you have. Open Device Manager; to do this, right click on My Computer, select Properties, select the Hardware tab, and click on Device Manager. Locate "Sound, video and GAME controllers". Expand that item so that you can see the details of components under it. Do you see one item containing the words "PCI Audio Device"? Exactly what is the full title there?

In your system tray, the area in the lower right corner of your computer screen, do you have the standard Windows Sound icon or some other sound icon?

Solve : cd-rom drive D drive problems?

You need a drive that can do this before you can write to CD's, or read blank CD's.

If you do have such a drive:
What operating system are you using?
Is the disk you are trying to use writable?
Do other non-writable CD's with other files on them work? (eg: an installer CD) I am using windows xp home ed. an e-machines COMPUTER with a combo dvd/cd-rw drive on it. Solve : Audio and Video files will not download.?

Answer»

Hello,
This is my first time here, so I hope that I am posting my question in the right location. Lately, I have been having trouble downloading audio and video files from the INTERNET, regardless of their file type. When I attempt to run an internet page that CONTAINS such a file, it will load part way and just stop. It does not freeze up, it only quits on me. I have never had this problem before, and nothing (that I am aware of) has changed on my computer. I have run antivirus scans that have not revealed anything, and I have done the same with anti-spy ware programs removing suspect files. My operating system is Microsoft XP. I have attempted to load files with both internet explorer and FIREFOX. Normal files (if they may be called such) load without trouble. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. How are you downloading the file exactly? Do you have a default player set for the files? (eg: Windows Media player for WMA/WMV files) Quote

Solve : hi all, HELP...PLEASE FOR GOODNESS SAKES SOMEONE HELP ME?

Solve : Native Resolution on Acer Monitor Changed?

Answer»

I bought the Acer 22" monitor (AL2223W) and have been using it for several months now with no problems. The native resolution of the monitor is 1680x1050. I've had it set up like that for some time now and the monitor looks beautiful!

Strangely though, I get up one morning to find that the picture doesn't look RIGHT anymore. I mess around for some time in the desktop PROPERTIES, changing the resolution. I take it a step further and attempt to update my drivers from my display adapters. I even search for a DRIVER for the Acer monitor itself (to no avail)!

According to the information (when I press the "menu" button) on the Acer monitor, I am told that the maximum resolution for this monitor is 1280x1024. This should (and has in the past) read: 1680x1050. My resolution (on my desktop properties) is set to what the native resolution should be (1680x1050). But at that setting the picture extends beyond the monitor screen. I actually have to run the resolution at 1280x1024 in order to make the picture fit (but of course the picture looks awful).

How can I change the monitors resolution so that it reverts back to the original 1680x1050? Is there a way to reset the monitor?Monitor driver, and your graphic card driver are two different things.
Your monitor screen resolution depends on what resolution your graphic card can handle.
I think, your graphic card driver got messed up, and you need to reinstall/update it.
What kind of VIDEO card/on-board graphic chip do you have?
What Windows version?Windows XP
Graphics Card: Radeon X300

I have attempted to update it. I get a message saying that I have the latest drivers. I have attempted to roll back the driver. But I get the message that no other saved driver is available. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers. Still nothing.Maybe, there is an issue with your monitor driver, then...
I can see, that your monitor supports 1680x1050 resolution, and this is what your desktop properties SAY, and this comes from your video card reading. However your monitor says: 1280x1024, which is not even wide screen resolution.
I'm surprised, your monitor didn't come with driver CD, but anyway, you can find it here:
http://www.acerpanam.com/flex/acerdrivers/bin/drivers.html?CFID=4800316&CFTOKEN=48258402
Just click on Monitor, then your model number, and your driver is right there:

[saving disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]That driver appears to be for Windows Vista. I have Windows XPYou're right. It's confusing.
When I go to Acer main page, your model: AL2223W is listed, but when I go to driver list, I can see only: AL2223WD model, with Vista driver only.
Would it be Vista only compatible? On the other hand, you say, you're using it for several months without a problem.
In AL2223WD, "W", I assume stands for "wide screen", and "D" for digital.
How many ports do you have in the back of your monitor?
Two? Analog, and digital (DVI)?
What cable are you using? Analog, or DVI?
I guess, you'll have to call Acer to sort those confusions out.2 ports:
- 1 VGA
- DVI

I'm using the VGA port only.In general, it shouldn't matter. DVI gives you just better picture quality. It shouldn't have any influence on screen resolution.
As I said, at this point, I can only advice to call Acer.Thank you for your assistance! You're welcome

Good luck with a phone call to Acer

Solve : Harddrive File Transfer?

Answer»

So my computer is messed up. If I want to transfer the files off of my existing harddrive on to my new harddrive what is the best method? I was planning on getting an external enclosure and doing it that way. I have never done this so what should I expect? Is it pretty simple just like a jump DRIVE or more in depth? Thanks for any help. The cheapest and probably easiest method method is to slave the existing hard drive if your system supports PATA (IDE) drives. If your drive is SATA then you may have a spare SATA connector on the motherboard.

It's also possible to connect a hard drive to a usb port using a special connector.

How you go depends on your hardware setup which you haven't mentioned.

Well I have a dell inspiron 1000 its like 4-5 years old. I has the regular 2.5 inch harddrive and runs XP. So I was just going to get the harddrive enclosure and do it that way. I DONT want to MESS with motherboard or anything like that. I am not that great with computers. I was thinking about getting a GATEWAY ML6720 with vista. How many files do you have to transfer? What about a USB flash drive? Or, burn your files to a CD and transfer them that way.Well see that is the problem. I took the computer to a shop and they said that the computer wasnt connecting to the harddrive. It was making all kinds of clicking noises and wouldnt boot up. So I dont know if the harddrive is FRIED or what. But it just happened in the middle of the night it didnt show any signs of crashing. So that is why I was just going to use the harddrive enclosure and do the usb thing.Well, it sounds like you have a failing hard drive, so why buy an external enclosure for it? You may get nothing from the drive.

And, if it will work long enough to retrieve some files from it, I'd get an Laptop 2.5" to Desktop 3.5" IDE Hard Drive Adapter, such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119020 and connect it just long enough to get your files. This would not be a permanent installation, not even a normal physical mounting of the drive in your new computer. Just connect it to a power cable and IDE cable connector long enough to get the files.

But, I guess you may not want to do this, since it entails opening the new computer and making some connections inside. So, yeah, an enclosure may be the best way for you to see whether you can retrieve anything from the old laptop hard drive. Just don't be a bit surprised if you're not able get anything from it.Ya this computer has already fried a harddrive. So buying an enclosure for 10 bucks off of ebay wont be that big of a deal if it dont work.

Solve : Teach an old dog an old trick?

Answer»

Old dog\old trick

Here's a trick built into win98, but not other versions. If you try it and LET it print to screen, use the | more command. If you wish to have a paper copy, MAKE sure the printer is loaded. This will give you more info on your win98 machine than you thought possible. From a dos prompt type the command precisely.

hwinfo /ui

have fun. Now I am curious:
What does it do?
(My 98 computer has been decommissioned, DUE to my WOS (waste-of-space) code)It will give you hardware and driver info that you thought you could not get from win98.I tried it. GOT a huge amount of driver info. Make sure the printer is unplugged from the wall and the computer...

Solve : vinyl l.p.s on hard drive?

Answer»

Hello I'm a a relative novice at computers so I hope someone can help me out.
I have recently recorded all my old vinyls onto the hard drive using r.i.p.vinyl no problem I have also burned some onto c.d.,no problem. HOWEVER the ones remaining on the hard drive have changed to a HIGHER pitch! They were fine now they're not. I don't know if I've DONE something to cause this,if so I don't know what ,and I don't know how to get them back to normal. Anyone got any ideas please. Alan
An add on it seems as though all the sound from the system is high pitched, must have altered some settings any ideas on that area?i think this is cause a vinyl ISNT digital sound and computers are.. http://www.fruityloops.com/ fruity loops is audio editing software , i used earlyer versions myself .. with some experimenting you should be able to restore your VOICE pitch but its intended for making insturmental loops.. maybe it will helpalan said the digital recordings were fine when he made them Diablo416. Digital recordings don't deteriorate over time so audio editing software isn't going to help here.

What version of windows are you using alan?
What audio player are you using to play them?
Have you made any software or hardware changes?
What sound card is installed in the computer?my bad i read that wrong .. i got one of the worse hangovers of my life today

Solve : sneezing noise?

Answer»

Can someone tell me how I keep hearing a person sneezing coming from my computer and also a group saying "come and get it". I don't know how or where this is coming from and it does it when I am online. Is this some kind of VIRUS or spy thing?Welcome aboard

Windows version? Your security programs: firewall, antivirus, antispyware?
Windows updates current? And also, are you using any sort of Instant Messenger program? Could it be possible that someone is sending you an MSN "Voice Clip"?Is it possible that a friend is pulling a joke on you?

Has ANYONE else had access to the computer? It can be great fun to change the .wav files for Windows default sounds.

I like the sneeze idea.
ONE of my favorites used to be the Three Stooges "nyuk, nyuk, nyuk, nyuk, nyuk, nyuk,".

Another thing, it could be possible that the computer itself is doing something physical to make the noise (eg: a fan problem)
But that really just depends

I agree with WillyW as WELL though, I see what he has suggested as more LIKELY.

Solve : Gmail going bye bye??

Answer»

I was speaking with my attorney yesterday. We both use Gmail, and he mentioned that he read in the American Bar ASSOCIATION newsletter he gets that Google is going to drop Gmail because they are losing money on it and that there's a class action SUIT being filed against Google because of this. Has anyone seen anything about this anywhere? I've searched, but can't seem to find anything.I'd hire another attorney...
Since they actually have an ONGOING Business relationship with google and a search turned up no news of this he may not be as qualified as he says.
Or simply ASK him for a link to the ARTICLE.

Solve : Internet keeps closing down when i try to blog?

Answer»

Hi, i was wondering if anyone could help me. Im a teacher working in an Irish Primary School and have started to do some blogging and SOCIAL networking with my class. Im using a site called Imbee.com.
for some reason about 3 or 4 of the children cannot post blogs to the site. they can log on etc but everytime they go to post a blog the LAPTOP says that an error has OCCURRED and SHUTS down the internet. All the other children can do this no problem. it just seems to be these few laptops that are causing the problem.
Im sure its some SETTING on the laptop that i have to change but i dont know where to start looking.
I would really appreciate any suggestions as it is very frustrating for the children and me every time this happens.

Thanks

Yvonnetry reinstalling the flash player..
http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer/yvonne ,
You can safely ignore the above advice...

Is it possible to get some more info on which laptops are troublesome ? ?
In other words are they all the same make and model laptops ? ?
Also which version of Windows are they running and which browser? ?
And does this symptom happen on any other sites or just the blog ? ?

It's possible also that the Imbee site can only handle so much traffic at once and maybe kicking them off if others are posting...

It's probably the individual laptops though so all the info above will help.

Let us know and Welcome to CH ! !

Solve : Computer freezes on download completion and in the middle of installs...?

Answer»

Hello, I was looking for some help and ideas on my problem with my COMPUTER. My computer will freeze CONSISTENTLY when something gets done downloading, and it will also freeze during some installations. At first I thought it was a no brainer, HD is failing, bad sectors, whatever. I then ran Seatools diagnostics on the drive as well as chkdsk, they both came up clean. I thought maybe it was a driver/software issue, I updated all drivers including chipset and flashed the BIOS, nothing. Then did a clean format and install of windows, updating all drivers afterwards. The computer froze during install the first time, but not the second. The computer continued to freeze up on every download for a driver and windows update download. I then tested my memory overnight, they also came up clean.

Possible processor/mobo malfunction?

Specs:
nForce 650i SLI chipset mobo
intel 2.4gig quad core
GeForce 8800 GTX video
2gig OCZ PC2 6400 RAM 5-5-5-12
320gig Seagate SATA drive

I'm running out of ideas here and was wondering if anyone has come across this at all or had any ideas. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is not a bad thing. If you have an antivirus scanner, it is taking this time to scan your downloads. Do not disable your antivirus scanner. It is important that all new downloaded files are scanned.

If you dont have a scanner, its a different problem. In that case, get a scanner ( www.avast.com , use the Free for Home Use edition if you are a home USER) and be sure to tell us what browser you are usingI've tried letting the computer run for multiple hours after first hanging on a download/install. With the clean install of windows I do not currently have a virus scanner, but I did have AVG previously. I'm just using IE6 for my browser at the moment.Chances are, half the issues you will encounter are related to not having a virus scanner.

Download Avast! Antivirus:
http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html

When prompted, do a boot time scan. If no viruses are detected, let us know, and we shall CONTINUE to search for other problems. No viruses were detected.any spy ware protection?
download s&d

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.htmlI have Lavasoft's Adaware, no spyware, fresh install of windows.

With the computer having froze during the fresh install of windows after a complete reformat I was thinking RAM fail, but like stated before I tested all of my sticks of RAM thoroughly, they are all the exact same brand, and completely compatible with the motherboard.Sounds like a unique issue
A few more questions:

First, how exactly did you check your RAM?

Second, when you ran CHKDSK, ,did you set it to have your computer reboot, and do a scan before the desktop appeared?

What operating system do you have? (Pardon me if you already mentioned, I have a small headache)

Possible solutions: (Notice the WORD, Possible? I would answer the questions above first)
Download and install FireFox, install the addon Windiz Update. (If you have XP, that is. Vista uses it own updater). Allow it to update whatever you need (specifically, drivers).
Could be hardware failure, Memory should be tested with Memtest86
Operating system fault, no plausible reason for it to be caused
Issue with your service provider, call and make sure you didn't go over your bandwidth I've checked my RAM once with Memtest86 and three times with the extended Windows Memory Diagnostic.

I did in fact do a boot time CHKDSK as well as several SeaTools diagnostic tests on the hard drive.

I have Windows XP Pro, I did eventually get all of the updates downloaded and installed in safe mode. Took about 5 boots to get through them all as the computer froze several times.

Also, now the computer will freeze shortly after it boots up after being off all night, will do this several times before it will become stable. When I've left it on all night, however, it will sometimes freeze overnight but when I turn it back on in the morning it will not freeze several times, only once at most, and there is absolutely nothing running in the background trying to download/install on boot. Oddly enough it seems once it "warms up" it is fine, also after boot the system seems completely stable for net browsing, videos, music, games, etc. for the entire day. This is the weirdest thing I've ever seen.Well the RAM and hard drive have beeen tested so we'll move on.
Are you experiencing any video issues ? ?
Reason i sak is the symptom you described that after the machine has been running for awhile and warmed up it seems to do better.
Remove a side panel and get a can of compressed air to clean out the fans and heatsinks. Use a QTip to hold the fan blades in place while blasting them,
DO NOT use a vacuum inside the case and make sure all power is disconnected before working in the case.
Re-seat the vid card making sure the contacts are clean and there is no debris in the slot.
Plug everything back in and re-boot and watch the fans to see if they all are operating properly.

If after all this you still have the same issues then the next suspected culprit would be the PSU...
Borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there.
Take the machine thru it's paces to see if the issue stops ...if it does replace the PSU.

P.S. Don't buy a twenty dollar special or you'll be doing this again soon.

After downloading and arranging some new icons for my files and folders everything in the Start menu (except Microsoft stuff) changed to the same generic boring icon...My desktop if OK (and is easy to change) but I can't seem to get the Start menu ones back...can anyone help.

Solution #117.

This is what to do:
1. Click on solution #117. New window will open.
2. Right click inside that window. Click Select All.
3. Right click again. Click Copy.
4. Open Notepad. Right click inside Notepad window. Click Paste.
5. Go File>Save As, and save the file as startmenu.reg in known location.
6. Go Start>Run. Type in: regedit. Hit Enter. Registry Editor will open.
7. Go File>Export, and save your registry to known location.
8. Go to wherever you saved startmenu.reg file. Double click on it. Some registry changes will be done.
9. Restart your computer.
10. Report back here.I went to solution #117... I downloaded it to my harddrive, then when I ran it, it just asked if I wanted to add the registry files to my computer...there was no other options or the opportunity to save the registry.
I clicked yes and so far nothing is any different. Did I just make things worse?

Thanks, SORRY if I'm screwing up...I'm still learning.Nope you did it right...re-boot.After re-booting my file setting preferences were changed back to their original settings (mostly the view options), but those annoying icons in the Start Menu were still the generic boring ones...I restored to the DAY before to get my settings back instead of re-doing everything again. Am I annoying or what?
I really appreciate all your help & think this site is great! Even when I can't solve a problem I still LEARN a lot from reading the other posts.
Is there anything else I should try?
Thanks Again.Have you checked any of the Custom settings in the Start menu itself ? ?Was one of the things I tried first...tried again...still no luck...I just love a mystery!

Thanks

Tried all the advice again and my start menu looks normal...now how about getting the icons back when I open up All Programs?? All the Microsoft ones are there but the rest are the same 'unkown document" one.
Should the #117 have fixed that as well or is that a separate issue?

Thanks Guys.
