Solve : Review: the Cheapest Inkjet Cartridges Sites?

Answer» http://techsupportalert.com/cheap_inket_cartridges.htm

Quote
Buying inkjet printer cartridges is a confusing business as there are dozens of web sites all claiming to offer the cheapest and best.

The trouble is that "cheapest" and "best" often don't go together.

At Tech Support Alert we put their claims to the test by buying from 47 Web sites selling cheap compatible inkjet printer cartridges and testing them on our office machines. To test customer service we also returned some of the cartridges we bought.

Many suppliers didn't make the grade but listed below are the best 11.

It's quite POSSIBLE you may FIND some sites that offer LOWER prices than these sites. If price is your only concern then by all means seek out the cheapest. However from our survey I can state that the sites below not only have great prices but good products and a professional level of customer service.

The price of compatible inkjet printer cartridges can vary day to so we suggest you check prices at several of the RECOMMENDED sites.

Solve : So confused! Please help.?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new here so please be nice.

I've got to do a powerpoint presentation for uni and I want to put a bit of a VIDEO in it. This is the video I'm trying to download -

http://colbertondemand.com/videos/The_Colbert_Report/Colbert_Analyzes_Wikipedia

I've looked elsewhere on the web and it's not on youtube or anything that works with vixy or similar. ALSO tried downloading programs for capturing and converting flash/swf files to avi but they didn't WORK either and now I don't know what else to try.

Can anyone help please? My brain is exploding! If you use Firefox, get an add-on Video DownloadHelper:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3006
I just tried it at your LINK, and it downloaded that video without a problem.
You need standalone Flash player to play it.
I use free Wimpy Desktop FLV Player: http://www.wimpyplayer.com/products/wimpy_standalone_flv_player.htmlSorry, should have said. I'm on IE. Never used Firefox before.

Is it possible to download it in IE?I don't use IE, so I won't know.
Try Firefox, you may like it.It worked! Thank you so much!! I told you...LOL
Now, since Christmas is coming, wrap up your IE into nice gift box, and send it to your worst enemy...HEHEHE

Solve : looking for a specialized keyboard?

Answer»

I'm building a digital picture frame out of an old laptop and have stripped out everything except for the screen, motherboard, ram, and hard drive to make the frame as thin as possible. It's working out great, except for one problem, I don't have a way to switch between pictures.
I'm not about to hook up a full size KEYBOARD and make the thing look geeky.
What I would like is a two- to six-button keyboard that could hook up via ps/2, usb, or even serial, if I absolutely have to.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to search for such a thing? I've tried "four-button keyboard", and I just get results for four-button mice and other unhelpful stuff. I'm having trouble coming up with any other search ideas.
If you've got any other ideas for my picture frame, then LET me KNOW too.....
thanks.
What about something like this:

I saw those on newegg, but I think it's a bit too big. I'd like to be able to integrate the buttons into the frame.
I was THINKING about getting a usb mouse and taking it apart to just use the buttons because linux lets you choose the function of the buttons.

If it were real, that might actually work Something like Optimus mini three?

It is pretty expensive though. But on the plus side you get a 3 button keyboard with tiny OLED screens for keys.

Solve : How To Add The Safe Mode Option To The Boot Menu In Vista?

Answer»

Courtesy of:
Lockergnome

Safe Mode is very useful for troubleshooting computer problems. Normally you access Safe Mode by pressing F8 as your computer boots then selecting it from the list of options. If you find that you are often USING Safe Mode, you may want to add it to the list of options at the boot menu. This way you do not have to press F8 when you want to access it. You can accomplish this by editing the boot.ini file MANUALLY or through the System Configuration tool using the steps listed below:

1. Press the Windows + R keystrokes to open the Run command.
2. Type ‘MSCONFIG’ and click OK.
3. Click the Boot tab to make changes to the boot.ini file.
4. Select your default operating system.
5. Select the Safe boot option.
6. Click Minimal from the list of Safe boot options.
7. Select the Boot log option.
8. Click OK to save your changes.
I dont recall Windows Vista failing to have Safemode...

Hope this helps.

Solve : MSN Messenger emoticons?

Answer»

Well I WANTED to KNOW where the MSN EMOTICONS where located on your PC so that I could send them to PEOPLE and create a backup.
Are they even located on your computer or are they saved on the Microsoft server?
I tried searching but Without luck.

Thanks in advance
Jonas While you are on Messenger you can try right clicking on them and select save IMAGE file save them to your HDD and then send the collection...it may not allow it.
There are a ton of smilie packs out there on the web but most come with a ton of adware spyware and other garbage much like DLoading ringtones....so be careful.C:\ > Documents and Settings > USER > Application Data > Microsoft > MSN Messenger > (one of the numbered folders - you can check by size) > CustomEmoticons
Remember, these are the emotions you have added yourself. Default MSN emotions are probably stored on the net, anyway you don't need to back up them.

I've been wondering if thats what it is. If you click on individual topic replies, you can select the signature area, the avatar area, and the topic itself, but if you select outside that area, your previous selections disappear. Exactly. This is how CTRL works (with different functions). It's a selective key. For instance, in Windows Explorer, you can select non-consecutive files by holding CTRL, and clicking.

Solve : Access Exchange server over VPN?

Answer»

Hi all;

I have an end-user with a laptop running Windows Vista and he has Outlook 2007 as his e-mail client software. He is using Checkpoint SecuRemote VPN software to access the corporate Exchange server cluster. Using wireless LAN CONNECTION from his home in Australia to access Exchange server cluster in Chicago, USA. PROBLEM: the end-user can connect to the Internet and browse the web....he can also logon to our corporate network using the VPN client. What he can't do is access the Exchange server....the user can "ping" the server and get a proper response...so the datagrams are being routed correctly. I tested his user account on the Exchange server by accessing his e-mail account from my home laptop over my wireless connection in Chicago....so his account is also GOOD.....the user can also access his e-mail over the Internet from Australia using Outlook Web Access with no problem. Question: what can be blocking his SMTP access to his account using Outlook 2007?...I've verified with him over the phone the Outlook configuration is correct....using the IP address of the server rather than the server name so we're not DEPENDENT on DNS name resolution. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Moving Files, Old to New Drive?

Answer»

I am considering buying a new computer, one that is made by HP and has the Vista operating system.

My current computer was made around 2000 and uses the Millenium Edition OS. This is the first and only computer I've ever owned.

I'm fairly sure that the secondary, internal, Western Digital hard drive I installed a few years after 2000 is an ATA one.

The HP sales people said that if my secondary hard drive on my old computer is ATA, it will not work on their new machines, which use SATA.

I have many files on this secondary drive that I would like to be placed on my new HP computer's drive.

Other than sitting here for hours on end copying file after file after file from the old ATA hard drive to temporary storage (say, on a CD for example) to be transferred on to a new SATA drive, is there some other method that is less painful and faster? Before I start, I should mention:
I am still learning about this particular subject. I personally have no direct experience with what you are trying to do, nor do I know if there are any more methods, or which ones I have suggested are the "best".
So, please bare with me, and correct me if I am wrong

Chances are, even if the new computer has SATA, it still has ye old ATA/IDE Cable somewhere inside of it.
Thus, you should be ABLE to (providing you have the IDE cable) use your old drive as a secondary.

If the new computer does not have an IDE cable, or will not support it for some strange reason, then you will probably want to use the Windows Vista/XP Settings and Documents Transfer Wizard (Vista: Windows EASY Transfer)

This will require the use of EITHER:
A) A special cable
B) A Ethernet cable

(Ethernet would be easiest. A short Ethernet cable can be bought for cheap)

You dont have to use the wizard though. You can do a direct transfer of *almost* all of the files from one drive, to another. (Files in use are an exception)

To avoid PROBLEMS and clutter, I would only copy your documents (eg: Music, photos, videos, documents, presentations, contacts, saved email, etc)

You could also use a USB to IDE device, which would make your old drive appear as removable mass storage device. try using norton ghost...

or write ur files in the CD/DVD at laest u have a back up..and try to transfer the files To those who posted IDEAS, thank you!

An online friend of mine told me to get a USB Flash Drive, so I've placed an order for a 2GB Flash Drive.

I'm surprised nobody at this forum suggested it!
(EDIT. Well after re-reading the posts above, I see someone wrote, "You could also use a USB to IDE device," but I wasn't clear on what that meant.)

She said transferring files via a Flash Drive is faster and easier than doing so by burning CD copies of everything.

The following article is a little dated, since Flash Drives now are capable of holding much more data than when this guy wrote this, but if you want to know more, read the following.

How to Use a USB Flash Drive:
http://www.wellesley.edu/Computing/Flashdrive/

Sometimes we fail to remember the most simple things

What a USB to IDE is, well, it kind of makes your current hard drive into a flash drive (in a sense) I dont know exactly how well they work, but they would probably be around the same overall speed of a flash drive, and operate the same. I have heard of other people using it.
Making your older drive into a secondary (sometimes referred to as a "slave" drive) would be the fastest, but not a great solution for new computer users. Quote from: Zylstra on November 25, 2007, 12:45:28 PM

Yup, thats it I hate when manuf. are so off the mark ! !

You will be able to hook up both of those hard drives in the new system and copy to your hearts content because it will have at least one IDE connection on the motherboard...if not two.
Because it ships with a SATA hard drive has NOTHING to do with you being able to hook up those drives and even use them if you want to.

If by chance you contact them again and they tell you there is no IDE controller onboard then by all means don't buy it because this means you won't be able to connect a CD/DVD drive unless it is a SATA drive.

Forgive me for getting angry but this kinda stuff coming from the Sales Dept. of a major manuf. really frosts my you know what ! !

P.S. I also apologise to the others here who offered ideas that will work as well but just not neccessary.

End of Rant.

Solve : Incoming emails blocked???

Answer»

I recently bought a Cowon iAudio mp3 player and would like to register to take advantage of their MEMBERS' service on their website.

I complete the entry form with ID name and email address, etc, and am told that a password will be sent to my email address. This never turns up - when I try "forgot password" procedure I get "new password has been sent" - still nothing.

I believe it has to do with their email server (is that the right term?) blocking the messages. Can I do anything about this?

I am in the UK and have tried AOL and Hotmail, using Firefox and IE.

Any advice appreciated.Have you tried using a different email account?
If the problem still continues, you will need to contact their support PERSONS, and check to see if they can do anything for you. Also double check in your Spam folders...it may have been filtered and is sitting there unopened.Hi - thanks for replies.

This has happened with both my AOL email and my Hotmail email accounts. I queried AOL when this occurred and they advised checking spam folder - nothing there. AOL said they couldn't help, it was a server matter.

I found a website "Cowon America Forums" (presumably for Cowon devices users) where several people have complained of similar problems. "Cowon validation emails blocked from reaching Comcast.net addresses" was reported there. One opened a Yahoo account and got through that way, although another failed with this move. I suppose I shall have to try that next. I can't find an email address to contact the company directly.

Why should straightforward and legal emails be blocked anyway?

Have you been to http://www.cowonamerica.com/support/index.html ? You might try the chat support feature. Thanks for link, soybean.

I'll try them when they are back at work - they do say that there are problems with AOL and advise using another account.Being a webmaster myself, I actually use a paid hosting service for bigger sites I manage, and one problem I have come across is that I share the same IP address as websites that apparently send out inconvenient/spam email (I was sure to complain).

The server I was on had been blacklisted (blocked) from being able to send emails to Hotmail, Yahoo, and other BIG email service providers. Usually, these types of blocks resolve themselves after about 24-48 hours. If the chat support feature does not work for you, you might try waiting another week.

I shall take your advice Zylstra and wait a week or two then try again.

One thing this incident has made me question is, as I mentioned before, why the block? Who actually instigates the blocking? It's presumably meant to stop the sender's emails - would that mean that the sender's server is to blame? And if the bar covers these big email providers this would be detrimental to the (respectable) sender. That doesn't seem to make sense.

Or have I got it all wrong?Quote from: silkie on NOVEMBER 26, 2007, 07:55:25 AM

Most of the time, cheaper paid hosting has servers that are all on the same IP address, and the IP address identifies you to the Internet. If someone else who is using the same server/IP Address abuses the system, and say, sent out a bunch of emails to people who didn't want the email titled "Save 50% off new stockings!" and then a bunch of people start marking it as SPAM, or if it was sent to a lot of non existent members of a @hotmail.com account, (you know, when you get the "MAILER DEAMOND: Address not found!" message) it starts looking suspicious to the Hotmail server. Anyways, the Hotmail server might, as a solution, "blacklist" or block the IP address that was abusing from sending messages.
Therefor, your server, and everyone else's on that same address are no longer able to send to the @Hotmail.com domain.
Thanks for trying to get it through to me Zylstra - I, er.., think I get what you mean.

With all the billions of spam messages there are flying about, and these being reported, there MUST be an awful lot of blocking going on.

Solve : modem issues?

Answer»

This question is probably located somewhere but as I am new to this forum, I decided it would probably be QUICKER to start a new question. Why would my daughter's modem work for about 24 hours and then quit? I have replaced the modem. The error message saya no dial tone. However, there is a dialtone when chedked with phone. It may be possible that old age has resulted in it quitting on you.

Try the following:
Check the phone cord for any issues (eg: frailed, bent)
Make SURE the cord isnt being squished and make sure it isnt in a knot anywhere
It may be the phone line in your wall. In this case, it may be a "crackly" connection. Most modems can cope with "crackly" connections, but not all will handle it extremely well.

In the event that your modem has died on you (we will determine if it has later), it may be necessary to purchase a new one. You can order one online (from a site like www.newegg.com ) or buy one from your everyday electronics provider (eg: Freddies, Costco, Wallymart, Shapples, or That Office Place Depot... I fail to want to post the store names for some reason)
They usually dont cost much. Btw: You want a V92 modem.

Also, what operating system do you have?We have checked the phone line repeatedly. The phone gets a dial tone but the modem says there isn't one. I have put a new robotics modem in this computer within the last 4 months. I also installed an Ethernet card when she thought she could get high speed (no SERVICE to her area however). She has to do dial up. In checking the hardware, it says the modem is working correctly. I just don't want her to have to pay for service if it is something simple that I could handle (I am retired media coordinator who managed the network at our school and made minor repairs---replacing video cards, installing cd roms, etc.). Your going to need to put the Installation disk in the computer, and run through it. You are most likely missing the drivers. You can also try double clicking the device in Windows under Device Manager, navagate to the Driver TAB, and UNINSTALL the driver, and then restart the computer. Also, did you try different phone jack?

Solve : Any video to iPod converter?

Answer»

I recently discovered Videora iPod Converter:
http://videora-ipod-converter.en.softonic.com/
It'll covert almost any type of video to iPod format, it's free, and it has number of nice settings (video, audio quality, iPod, or TV quality, and others).
I've been using it for couple of days, and I like it.
Oh, it's fast.

Nice. However, I prefer the registered version of Total Converter... It can litterally CONVERT to or from anything a a vast amount of codecs... And the Video Player has so many codecs you'll nover need to get one.

It can convert Ipod format to gif, and BACK again... But it kills your computer with the file size... Interesting...I'll have to try that one.I personally prefer Jodix Free Ipod Video Converter. It supports many formats including DVDs (.VOB). I also use 3GP_Converter once and a while. It supports an enormous amount of formats including PSP and will AUTOMATICALLY add converted videos to iTunes.

Solve : To improve system speed?

From few days i am experiencing problems with system speedness.
How can I improve the system SPEED?Quote from: hidinu on November 28, 2007, 07:23:45 AM

How can I improve the system speed?
I would first add more RAM. I recommend adding a 512MB chip. This will speed up your COMPUTER significantly but 1GB of ram would be nice.

You might also want to try defragmenting your drive.
Start --> All Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defrag

It wouldn't hurt to take a look at your startup programs as well.
Start --> RUN --> Type 'msconfig'.
A window will pop up. Go to the 'Startup' tab and untick startup programs that are not necessary. Feel free to ask us which startup entries you can remove if you are unsure.

Try those two steps and tell us if there are any system improvements.I'm new at this myself, but I use a program called Autorun...it shows everything that is running at start up & you can look up each process on the net, then shut them off if not needed.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/autoruns.mspx

It is quite SIMPLE to use. Which is good for me.

Good Luck.

Solve : OxygenOffice Professional?

Answer» http://www.download.com/OxygenOffice-Professional/3000-2064_4-10671655.html?tag=nl.e415

Spun off from OpenOffice.org, OxygenOffice Pro is virtually the same program, but with a few more features. Fortunately, it's MUCH like its parent, and you can opt out of whatever features you dislike during the installation.

Originally called OpenOffice Premium, a misnomer like the current "pro" designation, the interface and basic functions remain unchanged from the source. OxygenOffice is all about the add-ons. Most notably it comes with a huge clip-art and photo gallery, 3,400 images strong and easy to drop into any Oxygen document. There are also extra fonts, templates, and sample docs INCLUDED, useful for those who have forgotten or need a refresher for business letter formats and such, but they're not for every user.

One function that should have wide appeal is OooWikipedia, which lets you search Wikipedia without having to jump to your BROWSER. Support for Visual Basic in Excel, and smoother WordPerfect document and GRAPHICS importation are small but useful improvements. There are also enhanced help MENUS and user's manuals, nice touches that reflect the extras that Oxygen gives. Despite these extras, we'd like to see more OpenOffice plug-ins included before making this a must-have. Nice find, yet another Microsoft Word Variant.

Solve : CodecInstaller?

Answer» http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,68085/description.html?tk=nl_ddxdwn

Can't FIGURE out why some videos won't play on your PC? This free
UTILITY checks your system and TELLS you which CODECS (programs needed
to view videos) are missing. Then it suggests safe, reliable download
SOURCES Pretty neat! Very nice find. This should come in handy.I ran it on my computer, and it found some codecs, I didn't have, and some, that needed to be updated.
Nothing crucial, because everything works fine, but it's good to know, I guess.

Solve : New forum "Your recent posts"?

I've had a few new forum users who've had a difficult time re-locating posts they've made on the forum. So to help I've added "Your recent posts" at the top of the forum by "UNREAD posts" and "New replies to your posts", which will link to recent posts you've made. This change will only affect those users who're using the default forum template.sounds neat GJYeah just noticed and a big THUMBS up from here. It will save a couple of CLICKS not having to go through my profile PAGE to find them.Wow, I didn't even notice! Quite handy. Thanks for the addition (and for letting US know). Thanks Nathan, helps a lot.I've been using the New replies to your posts a lot and I'm totallly digging it.Quote from: CBMatt on November 28, 2007, 01:47:47 AM

Solve : Laptop without an OS?

Answer»

The latest thing to come into my shop: A laptop that came with no operating system.

I had a client bring in an Aspire 4520G. Seems they're now selling this model in southeast Asia without WINDOWS. Little did she know when she bought it, she had to go shell out another $200 for Windows. According to Acer's website, this model should come with Vista Home Premium, but all of the Acer shops here now sell it with nothing. No drivers, no Windows, nothing. Not even Linux.

Well, that's a lesson learned for her.Did the seller also claim that it came with an OS? What country is this? Any governmental agencies there that deal with consumer protection laws? If so, I'd be contacting them.

I'd also contact Acer to inquire about whether they are aware that that laptop is being sold in certain areas with no OS. If they RUNS counter to their policy, they may have some power to stop this practice by sellers. If she contacts Acer they may be receptive to helping since they probably be very interested in this place of business...It's in Thailand.

The way things are with piracy here, it doesn't surprise me.

I've already e-mailed Acer and asked them for advice. Waiting for a reply.

I spoke to the dealer, and he said he told her that before she bought it. That may be true and she might not have realized it. She doesn't know anything about computers.

While the system is designed for Vista, I have managed to get all the drivers she needs for XP which she has an original disc and COA for. I had to go through the parts MANUFACTURERS directly, since Acer doesn't supply XP drivers for this model, only Vista drivers. It'll keep her system running until Acer gets back to me about the OS. The only thing I can't get a driver for is the IR unit, but from what I've read that won't work under XP.You can call Acer, and they may send you a disk with the operating system, and all its drivers, for a LOW price (it will only work on the Acer computer, they will ask you for some sort of serial number probably located on the bottom of the laptop. Since they will know if its really from their company using number, and that it must be yours, they should send you the restore CD without charging the same price for the OS)
It may cost less to do this then to buy Windows XP, and go through the trouble of finding drivers. The XP CD she already had, but we thought she WOULD have to shell out a bunch of money for Vista, since Acer only supplies the Vista drivers from their website. Where the CD came from is not my business to ask as long as she has the COA for it.

However, since everything is now 100% operational except for the IR sensor, it's fine. She said she won't use it anyway. Still waiting for Acer to contact me back, but it might be a few days.

Solve : Creating a flash file - not sure this is the right forum for this.?

Answer»

Hi!..

Now I want to create a flash file that is like the one on this page:

www.moodies.co.uk

How would I GO about doing that?

Thanks for any answers you can give!
Your link doesn't work.Specifically, you need Macromedia Flash (not Flash Player, but Flash).. Its a rather EXPENSIVE program ($699)
You can get it here:
http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/
It is an advanced program, and may require a lot (and I mean a lot) of work to start getting how it works.
There may be other (free) programs out there that may create basic flash animations, but that depends.

Please note:
The link in your post is broken, I cant see exactly what you mean.I believe the link Psy intended to post is http://www.moodies.co.uk/ it is that, i have edited it in my post and you can see it in soybean's post -> Thanks soybean!

Do you know of ANYPLACE i can get tutorials on how to make something like that with flash?

Thanks! If you want to just make animated photo slide shows with SWF file as the output, you can start with free ANVSOFT Flash Slide Show Maker:
http://flash.dvd-photo-slideshow.com/flash-slide-show/flash_animated_movie_maker.phpthanks broni, i'll take a look at that! It's done what I WANTED so thanks alot broni!I'm GLAD, it helped

Solve : Computer screen to big, how do I resize?

Answer»

When I open my internet explorer everything on the screen is really big. Is there anyway to resize it and make the letters and pictures smaller? For Internet Explorer 7, click on the page button on the top-right corner of the window. Then click Text size and then Medium.
For IE 6, click view from the menu and then text size and medium.
You could press CTRL + or CTRL -
Either way it works! OH OH ITS MAGIC YOU KNOW!That worked, thank you. My daughter did it one time for me, she opened some box that looked like it had volume BARS on it and slid the arrow on the bottom of the bars back are forth to make it larger or smaller, I don't know where she found it. This will work for now, thanksQuote from: mark227 on November 30, 2007, 06:16:32 AM

My daughter did it one time for me, she opened some box that looked like it had volume bars on it and slid the arrow on the bottom of the bars back are forth to make it larger or smaller, I don't know where she found it.
She was probably working in the panel for changing screen resolution. To open it, right click somewhere on your Desktop, i.e. your COMPUTER screen with no programs open, and SELECT Properties to open Display Properties. Select the Settings tab. You will see a slider bar under screen resolution. That's where you can change resolution. This affect all applications and windows, not just your web browser.

well, I'm not good reading at those logs but have you try with another burning software?like http://cdburnerxp.se/
but it's only for windows xp.Thanks for your reply but i have tried even slysoft's cdclone. so i think it might not be a problem with the software...nero's crap. i don't like using it coz it caused problems to me all the time. try other burning software like ulead burn which my school technician uses to make high quality DVDs http://www.tucows.com/preview/385592Hey...i jus tried windows media player n cdburner xp n ulead but nothing worked...i think its my drive malfunction .U see my drive is cd-r/rw and dvd-rom combo
it jus dosent write to discs but can read from cds n dvds ...Try another brand of blank media...borrow one from a friend instead of buying a stack of 100.
Use CDBurnerXP Pro.
Add all 3 types of media...some data, a song and some photos or a small vid clip.
Burn at the slowest speed and turn off as many background programs as you can.
If this fails then the burner is probably shot.
But don't feel bad this will be our 73rd Memorial Service this week alone for Hardware.
New DVD burners are down to about 40 bucks on newegg if your here in the States...

Solve : pc crash after installing drivers?

Answer»

ok my friend installed some 64bit 7200 drivers from the net and it didnt quite work RIGHT then he got the factory cd drivers and installed them then it asked him to restart the pc, he did that and then it would not restart the computer it would go into a black setup and it would stay there and freeze and it also froze trying to GET into safemod. what went wrong? Are you RUNNING a 64bit version of Windows ? ?
I'm ASSUMING the 7200 is a vid CARD ?
You may have to remove the card and hook up to the onboard video and boot into safemode to remove the offending drivers.
If your lucky the system will boot properly this way.

Solve : Linux Fix-it-all disk??

Answer»

Are there any Linux distributions out there specifically for fixing Windows related issues, or that will do diagnostics on hardware? Eg: Test the hard drive, RAM, motherboard, CPU, FSB, all that in one disk?

Finding different DISKS, and having our users run each individual test takes too long, and can easily be a waste of CD's.
Here is one to try out. It has many diagnostics and test that can be done. It also includes a lot of troubleshooting tools.

Check it out at: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

EDIT: Just noticed that this can also be run off of a USB Flash Drive. The problem with SUGGESTING this solution is depending on the user's level there are extremely dangerous utilities on there that can render a machine useless with one incorrect mouse-click...

You would then see a bunch of " what happened to my data" posts...i used the CD you recommended ! !The reason I suggested it is because I know that Zylstra is competent enough to use the utilities safely.I understand...that wasn't my point.I know. I was just clarifying my reasons for the suggestion. =]. I see what you're saying though. So, is Ultimate BOOT CD something that could be put into the hands of a newer computer user?
I would want them to be able to MAKE a mistake by accident, but not go about ruining things No.

I wouldn't recommend it at all until i know what their skill level is.

Solve : which laptop is better?

Answer»

Hi my name is Trish. I have no idea of forum etiquette so please forgive any....rudeness..? My dilemma is this- I have the opportunity to buy 1 of 2 laptops and I would love some advice as to which of the 2 is the better laptop & why. I will only mainly be using it at home for hobby stuff , kids, budget, photos & downloading a bit of music and a movie or 2. 1 is a HP dv 600 or 6000 and the other is a Toshiba sat M200. Oh and I only have a power cord for the Toshiba, I would have to acquire 1 for the HP. (sorry) Unless some one could also tell me WHETHER or not the power cord from a HP compaq nc8430 would fit it also. I will add the reason for my query-Because a FRIEND of mine had 1 of the HP dv's and fried it totally useless by using a WRONG cord. Any help, advice greatly appreciated. Thanx. Since any new laptop is going to come with a power cord, I don't understand your point about power cords.

Any particular reason you've mentioned those two models? Or, is it ACTUALLY three models? You say HP DV 600 or 6000, so does that mean DV600 or DV6000, two different models? By the way, I found neither DV600 nor DV6000 or newegg.com, a major online seller in the U.S.

Solve : Mozilla Firefox?

Answer»

Less than a week ago, I got an update ALERT that Firefox 2.0.0.10 had come out.
I didn't install it because I couldn't be bothered but now, a few days later, I get an update for 10.0.0.11.
When will it end....

Anyone try out Firefox 3 yet?i know. it's really annoying isn't it? and even when i didn't install the updates, it still install it by itself when firefox restarts and it can take a while as WELL.

go to tools-options-advanced-update
hope you find that useful. As shadowfierce says, just disable the auto updates if it annoys you.
Always check the release notes before installing, the update may not be required.
And I'm sure you would rather have a web browser that is regularly updated than one that is only updated once every few years, right?I keep it checked but when the update alert pops up, I just closed the box (the cross at the top).

You'll never take me away from firefox! NEVER!

I'm running 3.0 on the testbench machine right now...
I think most will like the new features and improvements, but keep in mind it is still in Beta.
I've had browser crashes a few times but these issues are being addressed.Quote

It's so right. We can only appreciate Mozilla people for coming up with new PATCHES whenever new security concern arises. All those minor updates are for that reason only.Sure. Recent threat that I have posted in COMPUTER News forum, is no danger for Firefox users. That's because they continuously test the software and fix flaws.
I will RUN Firefox 3, only if it automatically updates by itself as other updates.

Solve : Outlook Express???

Answer»

Have never set up an Outlook Express account...been getting by with a Hotmail one...but have noticed that I can't reply to Outlook accounts & recently realized that I can't send any Zipped files to ANYONE. Do I really have to have an Outlook account or is there a way to do everything without it??

Still Learning...Thanks In AdvanceWell, first, please state exactly which email client you're talking about. You've said both Outlook Express and Outlook. They are two different programs.

Are you asking your question here because you can't reply from your hotmail account to someone who used "Outlook" to send you a message? Is that what you're saying?Sorry, meant Outlook Express. Have had instances where I go to respond to an ad & an Outlook Express window opens...and Hotmail will not let me ANSWER it. Is there a way to do so or do I have to have an Outlook Express account of my own? Also I can't seem to send Zip files with Hotmail...when I go to send them - Outlook Express opens up again. Hope I am making sense this time. Thanks. When you use a mail link from a web page or the right click menu option 'Send to -> Mail Recipient', it uses your computer's default mail program, in your case, Outlook Express.

To use Outlook Express, you'll need something like a POP3 account, available from many web mail places as well as most ISPs. Check with your ISP to see if they provide you with a free POP3 mail account.

Hotmail offers POP3 access to your Hotmail account (so you can use it with Outlook and other POP3 mail programs) but you have to pay for it, because doing so allows you to skip their ads.

GMAIL offers this service for free (www.gmail.com) as does Hotpop (www.hotpop.com).

Gmail (if I remember right) also offers a download that will automatically configure your Outlook Express or Office Outlook for you, if you don't know how.

As far as I know, there is no way to DIRECTLY send attachments to Hotmail without first logging into Hotmail through the browser.

I use Gmail myself, because it allows me to use Outlook from HOME, and I can still check my mail through any browser when I'm away from home.

Solve : Can't get my wireless laptop to be wireless?

Answer»

I just bought a Compaq PRESARIO V6000TX Notebook PC that has a wireless something or other built into it. I realized that I did not have something to send out a wireless signal so I purchased a wireless router and also something that LOOKS like a flash disc but bigger and FLATTER that is supposed to pick up the signal from the router but whether I USE it or not, I can't get it to pick up a signal. Any ideas? Hi tahoesista,

Your laptop has wireless built into it, which means you didn't have to buy the "flash disc" that probably goes into a USB port on the laptop. Also, you have to run the disc on your computer that came with your router to set the router up, you can't EXPECT to plug your router in and for it to work. Also, make sure (if your laptop has one) that your wireless button/switch is in the ON position. Some laptops come with a button/switch for turning on/off wireless access. You may have to connect your router with your computer with an ethernet plug for the router setup CD.

Good luck with getting your wireless working,
-Don

Solve : desktop display help?

Answer»

I currently have a 61" Samsung HL-S6187W 1080P TV, I have a Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi A/V reciever with 1080p switching and 4 HDMI inputs. My computer is a Dell demension XPS Gen 3 running Microsoft windows XP media center edition. My video card is a ATI Radeon x1950 pro with VGA, DVI-I, and S Video out.

I just recently tried to hook the computer up via DVi-I to HDMI conversion to the back of my Reciever. I had previously had it hooked up via VGA directly to the back of my TV. My receiver is hooked up to my TV via a HDMI cable. So my problem is when I hooked up the computer through the reciever the desktop comes up but it has a SLIGHT and I mean very slight flicker, but that isn't the problem the desktop is mis-aligned on my TV. The start bar is below the display and the icons are all shifted to the LEFT and off the screen. I have set my video card to 1920X1080p @ 60Hz FRAME rate and I did so as well on my monitor properties through control panel/display settings. I just need to know how to get the desktop to line up on my TV like it's supposed to. Do I need a driver? I've checked just about everything else I know my reciever/TV can handle 1080p @60Hz I have devices like my PS3 and Xbox 360 hooked up through it via HDMI cable, and my video card EVEN tells me the max resolution that the device can handle.Hi avengerz43,

Try contacting ATI's support for this issue, they will gladly help you.

Solve : need help with vid card? or something else??

Answer»

I am at a loss with what to do with my computer. I have tried everything I can think of and nothing works. I play World of Warcraft and cannot seem to get my computer to work properly. My old video card is and Nvidea GeForce 6500 (256 mb). I have had no problems with this card until I got to the expantion part of WOW. Since then I would be playing and for no reason I lost graphics. Buildings disappear, the ground, walls etc.. I have to completely log out of the game to get them back and sometimes I have to restart my computer. I lowered my video settings, but that didn’t help. I downloaded the latest drivers and that did not help either. I bought a new video card, VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro (512 mb). I have not lost graphics, but I do get a whole different problem. My computer began to reset on me. I turned off the resetting on error and I got the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA 000000x50.
I keep getting this error. I thought it had something to do with me running Ventrilo at the same time so I didn’t load it and my computer still gave me the blue screen. I tried uninstalling Ventrilo and got the same problem. I deleted all my drivers for the video card and re installed, I did this for each one. I got rid of all my old drivers for the GeForce when I installed the new video card. I have updated all my drivers for my mother board, ran Norton and AVG with nothing detected. Here are the specs that I have with my old video card.
Mother board: Asus P5WD2 Premium

SYSTEM TAB
OS: Windows XP 5.1 build 2600
Processor: Intel Pent 4 CPU 3.00 GHZ (2CPUs)
Mem: 1024 MB Ram
Directx: 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
DISPLAY TAB
Name: Nvidea Geforce 6500
Version: 6.14.0011.6375
Date: 10/4/07
DDI version: 9 (or higher)

I bought another new video card in HOPES that it might fix my problem. I bought a NVIDIA e-GeForce 8500 GT. 512mb DDR2. When I installed it, my game play was ok for about 20 minutes and then my screen froze except for my character that was jittering back and forth. There was also a black triangle on my screen. I hit alt-tab to get to my desktop which had REALLY messed up colors. Then my screen went black and my monitor said “no signal found”. This has happened repeatedly now.
I researched what I could on the internet and followed some suggestions. I have exhausted every possibility that I can think of and I really hope you can help me. Thank you for your time. I LOOK forward to hearing from you.
Hi Terra,

Hmm this seems complicated. If you're having a lot of trouble, then you should contact the manufacturer's support for your graphics card. SORRY that's all I can think of.

-DonQuote

I did this for each one
Do you have two video cards active at the same time, or what?
