Solve : Missling dll file? |
Answer» HI everyone:I have come to this site quite by accident, but I thought that I would give it a shot.I don't know what happened, but I had to un-install and reinstall a new Hewlett Packard printer, after completion of installation I got a message stating that I am missing a arcCon.dll. I don't know what it is, but I do know that it STATED that if I could reinstall the application that it could probably fix the problem. Unfortunately, I don't know what that program is so I don't know what to reinstall.I have DONE numerous restores using different dates, but it has not helped my situation.Maybe you can give me some idea of what the application is that it wants reinstalled? The heading of the complete message that I received was:ArcCon.ac. unable to locate component. The application has failed to start because ARcCon.dll could not be found.Re-installing the application may fix this problem.Your HELP would be greatly appreciated.Thank you,Marvin516The only listing i could find for it suggests it may be malware according to PrevX... Solve : What's your internet connection?? |
Answer» What do you usually use to connect to the internet? I realize many people might have different connections, but pick the one you use the most often.Hmmm, anybody out there actually using ISDN? I gave that serious consideration years ago before either cable or DSL became available here. Even bought an ISDN modem on ebay. Shortly after, DSL became available. I switched from dialup to DSL and never used that ISDN modem. ISDN was QUITE expensive, as I RECALL, and only about 2 to 2 1/2 times faster than dialup.ISDN..........................BetaMax I don't see Telepathy in the choice list... Well, in that case you should choose WiMAX or other wireless... or just other. I have a super fast 400 kbps BROADBAND connection I wish I had a 3G (Which is 5Mbps)I use the FiOS fiber optic service. Quote from: mkensing on December 15, 2007, 10:26:06 PM I use the FiOS fiber optic service. Haha I knew I should of put fiber optic in. I nearly added it to the list then thought "Nah"I used to have cable from Adelphia. Their service was so unreliable it seemed the internet was out more that it was on. It was pretty fast though. A few years ago I switched to Verizon DSL. Verizon has been a lot more reliable than Adelphia ever was. Though I do miss the upload/download rate that cable has.Comcast Cable here. We're getting Fiber in my area in March. So hopefully we'll switch to that when it's available. |

Solve : Precautions for safe transport of PC? |
Answer» Hi, I am relocating from one country to another. I would like to ship my desktop via air freight along with my some other personal belongings. Can I have expert advise on what all precautions to be taken to get my PC in the same condition on the other end? ... You've reminded of something that I've seen done. I suppose it was done because the orginial custom fitted styrofoam was long gone. Use canned expanding foam. The trick: Squirt it into a plastic bag. Obviously, you wouldn't want to spray it on whatever you are trying to cushion, - you'd have one HECK of a mess. Squirting it into a plastic bag worked perfectly when I saw it done! The bag contained the expanding foam. The bag is flexible, so it allowed the foam to create a perfectly fitting cushion. Fitted around corners, etc. Fits to any shape, which made it better than other packing materials. The cost is not prohibitive. One other thing you might want to consider is that the country you are relocating to may have different power types. (Voltages in your standard outlet vary from country to country) Always check this before you go about plugging it in, and never modify an electrical plug. WillyW, I have never heard of a better idea in my life, nor would I have ever thought of that. I must say, you have quite the creative mind And yet another things to consider: Once you have figured out all your cushioning, wrap the computer in a large bag that can be sealed. In the event that water reaches your computer, this will help to protect it. (Even if its in a box, RAIN while its being transportated into the airport might become a problem (I wouldent trust them with getting it in to the airport as fast as possible...)Quote from: Zylstra on December 19, 2007, 05:37:31 PM ... Nope. Just sharing something I saw somebody else do. I wish I had a creative mind. Forgot to add: Be sure not to use el-cheepo bags. Just think of the mess if one breaks! Because of the static involved a blanket is probably the worst suggestion...Quote from: patio on December 19, 2007, 08:21:19 PM Because of the static involved a blanket is probably the worst suggestion... only if the blanket is placed inside the computer and gets moved around quite a bit. any static that builds up on or around the case will be quickly dissipated once the computer gets plugged in. |

Solve : Laptop...what to buy?? |
Answer» Hi, I just joined this forum and was wondering if I could maybe get some recommendations. I'm looking for the cheapest system I can get quite honestly, you will not find a very cheap laptop with the specs that you are looking for. the cheapest i could find is the Acer 5720-6279 for about $900, the rest are $1000+.The Asus EEEPC is definitely a great laptop. Whilst it doesn't have the raw power you're looking for, it's more than capable of basic office tasks, taking notes, creating presentations, etc. It doesn't LOOK like you need that much power anyhow - as you didn't specify a graphics card, I assume you're not a gamer. And you can always replace the Xandros OS with Windows or another flavour of Linux if you don't like what's supplied.I got the EeePC 8G. I'm thinking I might ditch Xandros and go with an XP/Fedora dual boot like my desktop. I use an external 250GB hard drive with it which is used for all my programs and files and an external DVD burner. Having the external drives is fantastic for me, since I don't always need the drives and don't have to carry them around with me constantly. The 7" screen and the keyboard take a little getting used to. My GIRLFRIEND has a Toshiba Libretto U100. It's similar in size and power to the EeePC, but costs 4 times as much (there are reasons why I won't go into). Not sure they even sell them anymore. My first laptop was a Toshiba and I still think Toshiba is one of the best makes out there. I've never had a Sony, and I HEAR good and bad things about them. Out of laptops I have serviced, Sony probably comes around more often. Asus makes some decent laptops other than the EeePC. They're a good company that's been around for nearly 20 years now. Most of their laptops come with a 2 - 3 year warranty, depending on what country you live in. I'd put Acer, Compaq (now owned by HP) and Dell laptops as equals. They're decent systems for the money, but remember, sometimes you get what you paid for. HP still makes their own line of HP laptops. The ones I have SEEN are quite sturdy and well made. |

Solve : Buying my first PDA - please help? |
Answer» Hi, I came here to get some input....I have a brand new laptop with MS Vista and I have MS office 2007 with Outlook. I need a hand held device that will allow me to sync my outlook appointments/calendar so I have it with me on the go. I would love to get a phone that does that for me, but I just got a new verizon chocolate phone a few months ago. (and wouldn't there be an additional charge because those soft phones and blackberry's use the web?) It depends on what you want. If you want more of a 'mac'-like clean interface with minimal multimedia, then the palm tungsten e2 is the way to go. If you want all kinds of video and music, but are willing to put up with yet another windows OS (trust me, I'm fed up with the WinGUI, it sux), then a pocketPC may be better. But PPCs will cost ALOT more than palms. Palms are $100,200,and 300 (e2 is 200) whereas PPCs are $400+.I wouldn't go as far as calling the PamlOS a "Mac-Like" interface, nor would I go as far as calling it clean. I do think that the PalmOS is as capable of running multimedia as the Windows, you might be doing a bit of program searching... I think you will find that for the most part, there is an equivelency rate with the PalmOS and the Windows Mobile OS, being that the PalmOS costs less since it runs more minimal, but if you want to start doing more stuff with it, you will need more The HP iPAQs are really nice. I've got a non-phone model. I can usually use it for 2-3 days without recharging and it gets quite a bit of use in that time. It gets used for the same things you're talking about (appointments and stuff) as well as listening to MP3s, watching movies when I get some free time, and a little bit of gaming. I use it to check mail at wi-fi hotspots as well. Works flawlessly with Outlook since it's running Windows Mobile. I've never had a phone PDA, but I've known people with them and most of them seem like they can get a half day of constant use before needing to recharge. Having a phone as well really drains the battery. |

Solve : Pc will not turn on, help!!? |
Answer» Hi everyone, Is there any warranty that comes with your notebook? I think it might be the "bought notebook off of Ebay" warranty that starts with a Z and ends with an O. Battery might be shagged out, perhaps? I doubt it's the battery, it holds charge and i have the same problem when powered by cable. Thanks for replies, keep 'em coming. It could be what we technical people call "broken". Unfortunately there are people around who use Ebay to sell junk to people. Hope you didn't pay too much for it. Quote from: Dias de verano on February 23, 2008, 04:53:22 AM Quote from: jerryheavyarms on February 23, 2008, 04:41:12 AMIs there any warranty that comes with your notebook? Well, sorry bout that... Hehe! Yeah! I dont know that its Z E R O! Just like what ive said, im not familiar with those ebay things... Isnt it the same as buying those refurbished computers from surplus shops? Quote from: jerryheavyarms on February 23, 2008, 05:51:43 AM Quote from: Dias de verano on February 23, 2008, 05:44:19 AMQuote from: jerryheavyarms on February 23, 2008, 05:40:31 AMwhat do you mean with warranty that starts with a Z and ends with an O? Hey, you are for real! You must be the only person in the world who does not know what Ebay is. Ebay is an online auction website where companies and private individuals buy and sell things. If you buy from a private individual you have no warranty at all, just like if you bought from a classified ad in a newspaper, or a guy you met in a bar. I know ebay is an online auction site but that is all i know. Well, thanks for enlightening me! Although i sound stupid, hehe! BTW, just wanted to know, Dias means days right? how about verano?SUMMER. It's from the NAME of a song by Amaral. Dias de verano means "days of summer" Primavera, verano, otoño, invierno. oh bugger, well you win some you loose some. Thanks for the replies guys. |

Solve : Limewire/Torrents Do Not Work? |
Answer» Limewire and Torrents worked on my computer for a long time, but all of a sudden it stopped working. Even though its on my allow list limewire simply refuses to connect to the network, and no matter what I do it can't seem to get it to work. Torrents work - slightly, but are incredibly slow. ComCast for one has recently been sued for throttling down heavy DLoaders... HERE Quote Although Comcast advertises an unlimited cable-internet use policy, many heavy downloaders have run into an invisible cap, which triggers a call from Comcast's Security Department that FLAGS their account for excessive use. The second time this happens, you're booted altogether—under the reason of hampering connection quality for your neighbors. The number 300GB has been tossed around in forums lately as the cap Comcast uses, but it could be closer to about 90 to 150GB.Thanx for that follow up Broni ! You're more, then welcome |

Solve : Help!!! spam flooding my email account? |
Answer» I recently found out that my aol email account has been flooding for the past month with spam email. I was wondering if there is anyway to get rid of them for good. A lot of them are the same spam emails and everytime i delete them they come back. From 2/14/2008 to 2/15/2008 I received a total of 47 spam emails.i dont used to use AOL mail; but yahoo mail has a spam feature beside delete and is good to tackle those problems, i think AOL mail should have this feature too, don't they?Aol has that feature but the same emails tend to reappear. Switch to GMail... Best spam filter around.ill 2nd that Another good idea is to use a disposable email account for logging into sites that require it etc. Another: I like www.spamgourmet.com for this. Quote Forwarding messages without cleaning out all the email addys is another way to get spammed a ton. If any of your buddies forward to you this way re-educate them as to the proper way or politely tell them you will no longer be opening their emails. I've wondered about this. Not SURE about the way you said it though. I was always concerned about somebody else forwarding one of my emails that they received to a list of their buddies. Now I'm totally unaware of it, yet my email ADDRESS has been distributed to a bunch of people I don't know. In your opinion, does this add to one's inbound spam? Yes. I believe there are bots that can scan headers for valid email addys. |

Solve : Hello and HELP!? |
Answer» Hello all, nice to be here and look forward to meeting ya! Names Jason/37/male/NC. Got the new power supply today. Plugged it into the motherboard and the hd, plugged it into the wall and turned it on. Smoke started coming out of it and it quickly started smelling hot before it just quit working. Any comments? what make/model power supply was that? Its a sunbeam 480 watt ps with a 20+4 pin connector, model no. PSU-BKS-480-US 480W RT. Incidentally, upon closer inspection of the inside of my puter, I found that the internal reset switch(?) that is connected to the "spk1" pin near the power led and reset switch pins on the mobo has a frayed, BARE wire. Perhaps that was the initial problem....Quote from: trag on December 13, 2007, 08:43:05 AM Its a sunbeam 480 watt ps with a 20+4 pin connector, model no. PSU-BKS-480-US 480W RT. perhaps, was the wire touching anything?Unfortunately I have no idea. The plug looked like it had melted a bit...Quote from: trag on December 13, 2007, 06:16:12 PM The plug looked like it had melted a bit... thats usually a sign that it did touch something. i would recommend a new motherboard, as well as another power supply as the new one you bought apparently didnt work out so well. And Im supposing that I probably need a power supply with a 20 pin connector instead of the 20+4...i would suggest the 20+4 connector. if you buy a power supply with just a 20 pin connector you will not be able to power most newer motherboards as they have 24 pins.So can anyone recommend a good lower end motherboard? Do I need to buy a cpu also? Or can I use the ATHLON thats on the M811 mobo? |

Solve : Birthdays Aplenty? |
Answer» [saving space - attachment deleted by admin]That happens to be what caused the forums to CRASH A lot of people with their birthday on 0-0-0 Yeah it's a strange one. Notice how 90% all are 38 too or birth dates of 12-31-1969. I think after thinking it about even more after TALKING to you about Zylstra that this had to be the cause of the issue over Christmas. MAKES sense because Christmas is a week (7 days) before the 31 and there were thousands of users who had this birthday and caused the calender parse script to overload. Should have seen this list before I deleted the old 10,000+ users. I believe that the whole issue stemmed from the YaBB conversion (old forum) to the new SMF forum. When it was done it must have taken birth dates it didn't recognize or were not filled out properly and converted them to this date or maybe like you said Zylstra how it reminded you of the BIOS Y2K problem, maybe the conversion script had a year variable issue that didn't convert older or impossible years properly. Instead of showing a week of birthday's I dropped it to 4 days unfortunately there's no way to avoid a lot to be listed because most are on the 31st.so that LATEST bug was YaBB's last stand?Possibly. I really can't say with certainty but it wouldn't surprise me. Maybe it's secretly causing problems with SMF because it knows it's going to be deleted soon.Maybe the ex member bug morphed into something else .... Haha yeah, I NOTICED the birthday thing as soon as I was able to get back on the index page. Having people not set their birthdays is what I figured it was, but never thought it was gonna crash the board. But *censored*, that's still a lot of people there hahaha |
