Solve : about my earbuds....?

Answer»

I've got a pair of sony earbuds but the sound only COMES out of one side. It's something to do with the earbuds themselves I think, as I've tested on portable cd player and my computer with same result. It doesn't bother me that the sound only comes from one side, but if I could be fixed, that would be cool ^_^One of the wires is probably broken. Probably can't be fixed.Quote from: quaxo on January 24, 2008, 12:38:58 PM

One of the wires is probably broken. Probably can't be fixed.

ahh, it can though, i have done it multiple times. if its a wire, it can be fixed, if its the speaker itself, then you will need to purchase NEW earbuds, unless of course, you HAPPEN to have a spare earbud that you could SOLDER on.

you will need to find a spot that is subject to excessive flexing and/or has exposed wire showing, as this would be the most likely place where a wire break could occur. the most USUAL places for the wires to break, due to excessive flexing, would be at the point of entry in the earbuds themselves or the point of entry in the audio jack. you can purchase new jacks if the break in the wire is too close to the jack.

if you do plan on soldering, just take note that the wire is covered in a thin layer of laquer. before soldering the wire you will need to sand off the laquer insulation to expose the bare copper. It's easier just to buy a new pair. Thanks for the info guys. I already did buy a new pair.

Solve : Online chat tool --- I really need help?

Answer»

OK, so I've been working on this problem since THURSDAY. I am in an online class and I need to access a live chat. I get the following error message while trying to connect to the chat:

Error: Connecting to angel.usp.edu:5222 failed. Ensure outgoing traffic is not blocked on port 5222. Please try again later and contact an administrator if this problem persists.

The suspects and the actions I've taken are as follows:

Verizon (internet service PROVIDER): it is not their problem as the problem with the computer existed in the library while drawing off of their internet service

The university server: it is not their problem because nobody else on or off campus has this problem

McAfee (security): I tried with all firewalls off and the problem still existed

Dell telephone tech support: not their problem

I tried booting in safe mode and got the same error message.

By the way, I am working with a Dell Inspiron 600m with Windows Home XP.Are you connected through a router? It might have a built-in firewall that's blocking the port. Also McAfee is a poor choice when it comes to antivirus programs, to say the LEAST. Get AVG Free and a free firewall, I use Comodo.I have an actiontec modem and we connect via cable modem.

I am not sure if there is a router within the modem.

if this, indeed, was the problem, do you have any recommendations for resolving it?
Go to start, click run. Type in "cmd" and hit enter. At the prompt, type in "ipconfig". There should be a number labeled default gateway. Type that number into the address bar in your browser. If it asks for a username/password try "admin" for username and leave the password BLANK. If that doesnt work try "admin" for username and password. It'll open up a PAGE, look for something that says firewall.

Solve : Nice digital camera?

Answer»

What does anyone think would be the best digital camera when it comes to taking pictures at night and be able to see the images nicely without the flash LIKE seeing the image as your eye sees it I can't recommend a camera but I know taking those kind of night time pictures is about using the RIGHT technique. You will need to configure the camera to use a long exposure time and you will need a tripod (or something else to hold the camera steady). If you do that I believe any good quality digital camera should be able to do it.I just GOT the Canon A720 for Christmas and it works pretty well in low lighting conditions. It has manual shutter speeds, aperture sizes, ISO modes, and flash output that you can play around with to get the right quality.
I just wish I had a tripod to go with it.

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=183&modelid=15657thanks for the advice You can pick an inexpensive tripod at your local Wal-Mart. You also want to set your ISO to at least 400 or more. You can play with the shutter speed etc. for the desired result just like a film camera. At least with digital you will see your result right away. If you don't like it, delete it.

A trick I use is simply lay the camera on something solid like a wall or even lean up against something solid like a tree, wall, etc.
Good LuckCyborg3:thanks I have been meaning to get a tripod for awhile nowRadio shack has got TRIPODS on sale this week..... I just got a 50" one for $10Quote from: michaewlewis on January 21, 2008, 04:19:22 PM

Your laptop could become the most expensive doorstop in your area. MAKE a note of it somewhere....and remember where that somewhere is.

Essencially, you cant keep them out of all programs.

When SETTING up a account for that computer, set up an administrator account (for you, give it a password) and set up an account for them (make sure its Limited)

You can go to:
C:\Documents and Settings\TheirUsername\Desktop
(Click My Computer to get to C:\)
and from there, you will see the icons that they see on your desktop. hey yeah that's right. just make a limited / guest account in windows xp or vista. In vista, you can use parental controls.

Just make sure all software you install are available to all users so that your kids can access it.Quote from: Dusty on January 21, 2008, 01:02:29 AM

lol... good one!

But, where he 'makes' the note may not necessarily be where he wishes to leave it, so although he remembers where he made the note - that might not be where the note is actually kept!

I recommend you remember (a) writing the note & (b) where you have the note & (c) not forgetting where it is!

Solve : turn on and off internet?

Quote from: ale52 on January 21, 2008, 09:47:04 AM

Create 2 batch files...

ipconfig /RELEASE

ipconfig /renew

Save them to the desktop. Now all you have to do is double-click them and you'll be disconnected and reconnected in no time

Alan <><

That's what I was thinking too. Even though the renew might take a few seconds, it would still work very well.that WONT work if the person he is trying to lock out knows anything about computers. also, you will NEED to add it to the registry to release on startup because all the person needs to do, if not computer savvy, is to restart the computer and the comp will automatically release/renew.I was under the impression that you merely needed to copy the batch file into the startup directory of each user for that to occur. But that's just as far as I know.Quote from: SilentAssasin64 on January 23, 2008, 08:12:53 AM

i guess that would work. i thought that in order to get a program to initialize on startup you need to add it to the registry. but thats just as far as i know as well. Hmm...we shall have to wait until someone who actually knows can shed some light on US...In Windows XP, if you put the file (or a shortcut to the file) in the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" directory, it will be launched when any user logs on to that computer.

Solve : Very Strange, could someone please help?

Answer» WELL I cant seem to extract the file to a cd. All i get is a zip folder and a iso file I do not get anything that says install
will keep trying that is the problem i was haveing earlierI can't understand why some people have so much trouble with this.
Download - Pre-Compiled Memtest86 v3.3 installable from Windows and DOS
To extract right click on the downloaded file and select the "Extract All" option. The extract option will LET you choose where the files will be extracted to. To build a bootable floppy go the the folder where the files were extracted and click on the Install icon.
Have a floppy handy.Hmm thanks for the help. but I dont have a floppy, all I have is CD and DVD

Ok, used my cd software with the computer to burn the cd but when I tried to extract the files it says I need a pasword.

I downloaded a program earlier today called fresh diagnose. it is supposed to check everything on your computer.
The only problem it shows which is probably the problem :-)
Under hardware it list it all battery, bios, casche, harddisk, mother board, sensors ect
(sensors- This module contains information about your system's temperature, voltage and cooling devices) that is the only one that has a problem it says (an error has occured.. unable to retrieve info. unsupported chip detected.)

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOo,,,,,, Is the chip bad or does the program just not recognize it to scan it.

Looks like I will be going on a road trip monday, after I get off the phone first.
YikesQuote
Hmm thanks for the help. but I dont have a floppy, all I have is CD and DVD
It took 17 posts to find this out?

Quote
For windows installation begin by downloading either the Pre-Compiled Windows package to build a boot-able floppy disk or an ISO (zip version) to create a boot-able CD-ROM. After the file is downloaded an extract must be done to uncompress the file(s). To extract right click on the downloaded file and select the "Extract All" option. The extract option will let you choose where the files will be extracted to. To build a bootable floppy go the the folder where the files were extracted and click on the Install icon. The floppy disk will appear to be unformatted by Windows after the install is complete.

To build a boot-able CD-ROM use your CD burning software to create an image from the un-zipped ISO file.
Since Memtest86 is a standalone program it does not require any operating system support for execution. It can be used with any PC regardless of what operating system, if any, is installed. The test image may be loaded from a floppy disk or may be loaded via LILO on Linux systems. Any Unix, Windows or DOS system may be used to create a boot floppy or bootable CD-ROM.

Ok, I am sorry for the mix up. Just frustrated with the computer.
Anywho got the install and ran the test 2 time already and nothing. Everything tested fine.
Seems today it has not CRASHED at all, but I did not plug it back into the same circuit it was on yesterday.
I will see in a few days if it starts acting up again.

Dont know what else to check.
Thanks for the help and for listening.
Will right back and let you know the diagnosisLet it run for 3 or 4 hours. Well I pluged the computer back in it original plug. Did the mim test for about 5 hours today, have had the computer on since 8am and nothing has happened yet.

I for the life of me do not understand, but I will leave it pluged in where it is at and see what happens over the next couple days.

I dont think we fixed anything dont know why it is running but hey it is running.

Will come back with an update as soon as I know for sure.
Thanks for all the help
Like I said in the original post, very strangeMemTest will run til you stop it.
5 hours should be enough.
Is it reporting any errors ? ?Mem test did not run continualy for me, It would test and then it would say test complete no errors found. PUSH esc to continue and upon pushing esc button it would start over, I started it over 5 or 6 times and each time it found no errors.
But comp is still on and running 2 days now.
Just waiting to see what happens nextWell it has been over a week since my last post. I wish I could say it was because my problem had gone away.
But unfortunately that is not the case, I have been so busy just trying to keep the system stable enough to check emails and look for job on workforce.
sometimes I can stay on for hour or more and sometimes it will not boot at all.
Keep doing the memtest when it will boot with disk in and have let it run for hours at a time, usually run it everyday now and so far have never had it come up with a problem.
A couple of times computer has crashed while memtest was running and it displays a lot of scrambled numbers and letters, but in the error section it will still show 0

so guess we are going back into the shop this week.
Since the computer is only 2 years old on a 5 year warranty and the new hard drive they installed under warranty is only a month old maybe, what are the odds of getting them to just replace the computer.

Any one have any thought on that. peeps are telling me to DEMAND they fix it or replace it all togather.
Any thoughts on the mater would be greatly appreciated before I go back to the store.
Than ks

4 GIGS DDR2 800MHZ

I HAVE A PIONEER DVD-RW DVR 112D I HAD ANOTHER DVD-RW HOOKED UP AS THE PLAYER BOTH HAVE THIS PROMBLEM.
THEY BOTH WORKED PERFECT BEFORE I TRIED TO COPY A DELL O.S. DICS WITH CLONE C.D. I HAVE UPDATED THE DRIVERS, UNINSTALLED AND REINSTALLED PLAYER , NEW FIRMWARE, AND WIPED CLEAN H.D. AND REINSTALLED WINDOWS XP PRO. , I USE NERO ULTRA , RAN THE SPEED TEST AND IT WORKED ON DVD+R BUT WONT RECONIZE OR BURN CDR'S

ANY HELP ANY SUGGESTION WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED

THANK YOUWhat brand are the CDs and how old are they?

If both drives have the same problem and you have reinstalled the OS then it's either the motherboard or the discs. How are they inserted into the motherboard? Are they on the same channel?the dics are new I have tiied 2 brand names imitation, benq cdrs and the drives were hooked up 1 thru ide and the other usb 2.0. the mo\bo is a asus m2n-e Correct me if i'm wrong but DVD-R drives cannot read CD's, can they?

For example with my CD Drive, it has a DVD icon and a CD icon, meaning is can use both.

I have another computer with a DVD Drive and a CD drive (seperate) and they can only read what they were designed to read.I've never heard of a DVD drive that can't read CDs (except maybe a failing one). It just doesn't make sense from a sales point of view to not include backwards compatibility.
Of course I can't rule out that such a drive exists... but I'd SAY it doesn't sound very likely.

Btw. the drive in question can read CDs.
Product Overview (PDF)

But mikey25702 you say you have done a clean install of XP? Not just a repair install? Have you made any hardware CHANGES? Have you tried to reseat the power and data cables for the drives?Sure any DVD- rw can read and write to either C.D. or DVD . No I havent made any harware chages except remove the IDE drive and I even tried it one of my other computers and it still fails. Yes I have installed new cables but that did not help either . Yes I wiped the hard drive clean and di a fresh install still it does not work

Help !!! Newer drives have more than one laser in them for different tasks...remove the drive and swap it into a known working machine...if it does the same THING one of the lasers is dead and you need a new drive.
newegg has DVD burners new for 40 bucks shipped.promblem solved thanks mikey25702 could you share with us what solved your problem? It might help someone else out.

Solve : Web Site Lets Geeks Trade Beta-Testing Invitations?

Answer»
AP- Tuesday , August 21, 2007

NEW YORK —
As many techies know, getting in on a hot new startup's invite-only "beta" test can be tough.

Some resort to posting pleas on their blogs, others beg friends of friends and — as best illustrated with the slow rollout of Google Inc.'s (GOOG) Gmail service in 2004 — some are even willing to purchase invites through eBay Inc.'s (EBAY) auction site.

But with the July launch of InviteShare, things might get a little easier for those aching to pass the online equivalent of the velvet rope outside the trendy nightclub.

InviteShare connects users who have or want access to new Internet offerings, including the online TV service Joost and GrandCentral, a one-phone-number-for-life communications service owned by Google.

Although some sites open beta testing to ANYONE to raise awareness and work out glitches, many initially limit access to a select HANDFUL, creating a certain cachet through their scarcity.

Many Internet users, particularly the tech-savvy early adopters, clamor for access to such invite-only sites, considering them a peek into what could be the next best thing on the Web.

On InviteShare, users register for free and then submit their e-mail addresses to lists kept at the site for particular startups to which they want access.

Those with spare invites respond directly to individuals and are encouraged to give priority to users listed higher — those who have done their part in the past to share similar invites.

The site tries to thwart spam by posting the address lists as image files, something more difficult for spamming software to grab for their marketing annoyances.

Created by Jeff Broderick, a computer programer and Web designer in Denton, Texas, the site was sold to tech news blog TechCrunch recently for $25,000.

TechCrunch founder and editor Michael Arrington, tired of negotiating with startups for beta test invitations to pass on to his readers, said his company was already looking into creating a similar site when he discovered InviteShare. In fact, he wrote about the site on the TechCrunch blog before BUYING it.

As of Monday, InviteShare corralled more than 28,000 users, who collectively sent more than 34,000 invitations. Nearly 50 different startups had LISTINGS — sometimes without the startup's blessing, though Arrington said he has yet to get a complaint.

Adam Healey, co-founder and chief executive of InviteShare-listed VibeAgent, said he is happy to have his hotel-recommendation site included and has even sent invites to InviteShare users.

"InviteShare provides another channel for startups to access early adopters, which is so critical in building community," he said.

Healey said 10 percent of his site's traffic in the past month resulted from InviteShare. He also has used the site to get invites himself — for services like joost and social networking-focused online application suite 8apps.

Eli Horne, a 21-year-old freelance Web designer in New York, has also gotten into InviteShare. So far, he has sent out about 25 invitations to various sites and gotten access to about eight new ones, including GrandCentral, he said.

Horne thinks the site — which lists the most popular beta services on its FRONT page — is also a way to keep tabs on what's hot online.

"If I were trying to launch a product, I would try to get it listed on there," he said.

Arrington knows only of one other similar resource: A group for beta testers on social network creation site Ning, which was co-founded by Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen.

And although InviteShare isn't currently a big money maker — Arrington estimates ads placed on it bring in a few hundred dollars per day — he believes there is real value is in its user base.

While signing up for the site, 80 percent of users have indicated they want to be notified about future private beta opportunities, he said.

Eventually, he'd like to pair startups with users, either for free or for a fee, depending on the company.

"All these people want to know about all the new services," he said, "and this is a gold mine for a new startup to have access to."

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,293954,00.html?sPage=fnc.technology/personaltechnologyI've been tempted to purchase some beta tests, especially for some of my top highly anticipated games (e.g. Warhammer oline), but looking at the prices for many of these I can't believe any person in their right mind would pay that type of price.

I think this is a great program and I'm also real eager to try this laptop out for myself.

Starting November 12, One Laptop PER Child will be offering a Give 1 Get 1 Program for a brief window of time. For $399, you will be purchasing TWO XO laptops—one that will be sent to empower a child to learn in a developing nation, and one that will be sent to your child at home. If you're interested in Give 1 Get 1, we'll be happy to send you a reminder email. Just sign up in the box to the left and you'll receive your reminder prior to the November 12 launch date.

Solve : USB Cables?

Is there a difference between USB cables or do they all work the same regardless whether you have a 1.0 or 2.0 device. If there is a difference, how can you tell? I have many USB cable lying AROUND and want to be able to use them when needed. They're all the same.
1.0, and 2.0 concerns ports, not cables.Quote from: michaewlewis on October 08, 2007, 10:33:51 AM

They're all the same.

Ah, the CERTAINTY of youth! You've seen and tested every single USB cable in the world, have you? Including the ones in my HOUSE? (How did you get in?) Well, if you had, you'd know that the blue one that came with that el-cheapo webcam is rubbish. (So is the webcam, but let's not go there.)

Quote
Fully compliant Original USB cables will work fine at Hi-Speed USB speeds. USB cables are not all fully Original USB compliant.

And that's from USB.org, who ought to know.

People find that KVMs for example don't work too well with low quality cables. Cheap cables are often OK for USB 1.1 devices and/or situations where they don't get flexed very much. You can generally tell a GOOD one because it will have "Belkin" written on it. That was a joke, but the only way to be sure is to get reputably branded cables. Cheap ones often only have one layer of shielding and inferior insulation material inside, so if they are handled, or coiled/uncoiled a lot, or used in a warm place, or just with the passage of TIME they can deteriorate. So a cheap cable might be OK to connect your printer to your PC or hub where it is just going to sit there, but the one which you use to link your mp3 player or phone every day or so might need to be a good one.Quote from: contrex on October 08, 2007, 11:45:17 AM

Sorry, I thought that it would be obvious that a low quality cable would be just that, low quality.

Check the location you downloaded the EXACT torrent. It will say the torrent has ## Downloaders and ## Seeders and maybe % Health.

If the torrent has 0-5 seeders, it is very possible you will not be able to download the torrent. If the torrent has about 6 to 20 seeders, it will take a few hours/days to download.

Solve : My e-mail address is being faked---causing problems for my class. Help please!?

Answer»

Okay, here is the situation. I have a one year instructorship
position as a philosophy teacher at a college. Somebody, presumably a
student of mine, sent out a fake e-mail to everybody in the class,
except me, saying that class was canceled last WEDNESDAY (the Wed
before fall break). The SENDER address was somehow FAKED, and so it
looks as if it came from me.

I had a student forward a copy of the email to me, but it didn't
provide me with any clues.

I have a few questions regarding this:

#1: Is there any way I can trace this back to a real e-mail address from the copy forwarded to me? This would be the best option.

#2: Is there any way to prevent this from happening in the future?

I would appreciate any help, since this could get out of hand very quickly.

Popinjay

Unfortunately, it is trivially easy to fake the address LISTED as the sender in an email.

Tracing the message back to the email account used to send it will be hard. But you can get a lot of useful information from what is known as the header in an email. The header will list what IP and domain the mail was sent from. This could possibly lead you back to the culprit.
How to view the header varies between email clients so its a bit hard to give specific instructions on how to do this. Furthermore you will need to examine the header on the original email since the header will be different on one forwarded to you.
So if you can get a student to show you the original email I suggest you Google the name of his/hers email client and "view header". E.g. "Outlook Express view header" this should provide you with the info needed to access it.

Here is some reading on headers.
http://www.stopspam.org/email/headers.html

Furthermore I'd be happy to to take a look at the header for you if you wish. Contact me via PM to arrange this.

Unfortunately blocking someone from faking your address isn't currently possible. But,
depending on where you live, impersonating you via email might be a crime. So if you suggest to your students that the matter will be turned over to the police, it might be enough to discourage anyone from doing it again.

Solve : Forwarding hotmail e-mails to an other hotmail account?

Answer»

Alright,
I recently changed my e-mail ADDRESS because my other one was 6 years OLD and very childish.
But now everybody keeps sending me e-mail to my old address.
is there any way how they can be automatically send to my new when they type my old?

Thanks in advance

Jonas Let's start with the basics. Did you notifiy everybody of the change in your email address?

I'd check with my ISP to see whether they had an email forwarding option. Of course, that should be a temporary fix; you should still notify everyone of the change.

You might try an email forwarding service; see http://www.emailaddresses.com/email_forward.htm or Google for more.I did notify everyone but some people keep sending to the old address.
BTW: Its an @hotmail.com domain.
I did some RESEARCH and they all say that it is IMPOSSIBLE to forward hotmail mails to an other hotmail account.

Thanks for the help I didn't knew the name with the name I was able to do some research.

Jonas I suggest re-sending your e-mail addy change to everyone in your address book...those who can't pay attention enough you probably don't want to hear from ANYWAYS...

Solve : I have a basic question?

Answer»

what is the difference between dvd-r and dvd+r ? this is the reason i ask.
i have been puting my pictures on a dvd+r and i can view them find on my computer but none of my dvd players will recognise the disk.
am i using the WRONG format disk or is there a PROBLEM with my cheap dvd players?
thank you in advance for your help.
peterIt basically two different formats.
Today most standalone dvd players should be able to read both, but some might be a bit picky about the media they'll accept.
But check the manual for the dvd player to make sure it supports dvd+r discs and also that it supports reading pictures from a dvd DISC. I have HEARD of players that only supports reading mp3s or pictures from CDs.DVD-R was the first DVD recordable format released in the market. It has broader playback compatibility than the "+" especially with much older players. DVD+R is the newer format developed by Philips and Sony with their DVD+RW Alliance. Introduced after the "-" format. Because the DVD-R format has been in use since 1997, it has had a five-year lead on DVD+R. As such, older or cheaper DVD players (up to 2004 vintage) are more likely to favour the DVD-R standard exclusively.

So you should stick to DVD-R disks and/or buy a newer higher-spec player.

Solve : Floppy has life of its own?

Answer» HELLO everyone
the other day my floppy drive decided it needed to run I guess, every few minuts or so it turns on, lights up, makes noise, then stops, I have checked to see if something was trying to access it but did not see anything, I tried putting a floppy in to see if that helped but no good, any ideas??

THANKS
DaveThanks for your help. I ran my virus protection and no that it is okay. But, will try checking in the CMOS and let you know. Thanks again.hello? sorry about the wait ok has ur drive run anything latly?

Try feeding it?It's likely that something on your computer is randomly trying to access or scan the floppy drive for diskettes. Often this is caused by a virus scanners. Many virus scanners will randomly check the floppy disk drive to see if there is a diskette in the drive and if so scan the diskette for viruses. However, often this only occurs at boot or when the computer is being SHUT down.

If your computer is randomly doing this frequently as your using the computer you may have some other type of program on the computer attempting to copy something on the floppy.

Boot the computer in safe mode and see if the issue also occurs in safe mode. If it does then it's likely something with the floppy drive and not SOFTWARE, in which case you may wish to replace the floppy drive or live with the issue. If the issue does not happen in safe mode then there is some other program running while in normal Windows that is causing the issue.

Make sure you virus scanner is up-to-date as some viruses often attempt to write themselves to any drive on the computer including the floppy drive. Otherwise see if you can determine what program you have open that is attempting to write information to the floppy drive and see if it can be disabled.Ugh.. just realized this was a 2004 post.. bumped up.. Solve : simple help...keypad on laptop?

Answer»

Please advise how to turn on the keypad function on my laptop. I know its a simple set of keystrokes but I've forgotten!! I have too much numeric data to enter to be using the numbers above the alphaset. I know that there is a numeric keypad here in the right center of my alphaset as it is marked, I just can't ge the num lock to work.

Using FN only allows the function on the left lower key (ex: home, pgdn, del)

Please advise - this couldn't be much easier but I cannot make it happen!Don't you just press the Num Lock key?

Try these steps to turn the Num Lock on or off:

1. Open a program that you can type in, such as Notepad.

You can find Notepad by choosing Start --> All Programs --> ACCESSORIES --> Notepad.

2. Type I just LOVE Kimmy into Notepad.

3. Find the Num Lock LIGHT on your laptop's strip of lights.

The light confirms that you're in Num Lock mode and can use the embedded numeric keypad.

4. Find the Num Lock key on your laptop's keyboard.

Somewhere on your keyboard is a Num Lock key. It may be called NumLock, or NumLk, or Num, or it may even be labeled with a symbol. Locate that key.

5. Attempt to activate Num Lock.

Press the Num Lock key. If nothing happens, then try Shift+Num Lock.

If the text "Num Lock" is listed in a different color, find the matching color key, such as Alt or Fn. Then press that key in combination with Num Lock.

You're successful when the Num Lock light comes on (if your laptop has such a light). At that point, the keyboard has switched into numeric keypad mode.

6. Try to type I just love Kimmy again.

It doesn't work. You get something like: 14st 36ve 500y. That's because most of the keys on the right SIDE of the keyboard now have their numeric keypad abilities activated. It works well for entering numbers or working a spreadsheet, but you may find it rather frustrating at other times.

7. DEACTIVATE Num Lock.

Press whatever key combination you used to turn Num Lock on.

8. Close Notepad.

You don't need to save the document.

at one point in my life i hac a very good computer . then my operating system crashed. then my computer wouldnt recognize the drives, so i couldnt re-install the operating system, so i mix and matched, i took the hard disk off a new dell that had a fried motherboard and put it into my computer, and i also swapped out the disk drives to a dvd drive and a burner. now when i try and start my computer the activity light turns on red and nothing happens? a little help please.More info
We'll need the specs on that computer
Does the computer sound like it's booting up? I.e. does the fans and hard drives start spinning?
Do the computer make any beeping noises? yes the fans and hard drives start up, but thats about it, i can open and close the drives, but thats it, i dont know what the specs are, i bought it used for 25 bux, all i know is the new hard drive has WINDOWS xp, and it has a pentium four processor. and two memory sticks in it and whatever else, did i POSSIBLY hook something up wrong? With anything after Win2K you cannot just swap HDD's around from machine to machine...it simply won't work.
Post a lot more DETAILS on the machine and how exactly you would like it to be set up and we can go from there..
If you got a 25 dollar machine with a P4 chip you did pretty well..i bought it from my local library they where going to junk it, all it needed was a reformat and thats where i messed up, i just want it to work again, but i swapped the hdd out with the original one and it STILL didnt work, it just did the same thing. and im pretty sure my disk drives wouldnt have any effect on that would they.As i said state clearly what your goals for the machine are ...what OS ? what drives ? ?
and we can assist further.
What Windows OS are you attempting to install etc...the new hdd has windows xp home , the old one dont have an os period, i was going to install either xp home or milenium what ever one i have sitting in my room, the drives are a dvdrom, and a cd rewriteable blah blah blah im not hardware smart i know about keeping themrunning and programs and stuff but it ends thereSince it is a second hand machine your best bet is to choose what hard drive you want to boot from, install it and format and do a clean install of whatever flavor of Windows you choose.
Anything else and you will be spinning your wheels.
After you get a clean install of Windows up and running i would DLoad, install and run Everest Home and use it to locate all the appropiate drivers for that machine especially the MBoard drivers...

Good Luck and let us know.but thats the whole problem, there is nothing. the activity light in the tower is red stays red the screens stays black the monitor light dont even turn green it stays orange. i cant do a thing untill this problem is fixed.Read your first post and see if you would be confused...
All i can tell right now is a bunch of drives have been swapped into a machine that came from a library and it's still not working.
If i missed something i apologise.ok i can understand why your confused. your probably just as confused as me. here is the scenario. when i try to power up my computer, nothing happens. it turns on, the drives power up and start spinning, but nothing happens. i dont know how to explain this, but on a normal working computer, there is a green light with a cylinder looking symbol by it, some times it turns orange some times its green. well on mine its red. nothing shows up on the monitor, or anything else. i can still open and close my rom drives, but i dont get anything on the monitor. and i know its not the monitor because i have hooked up different ones and still nothing shows up on them there is no activity in my computer, is it posible that when i took my PROCESSER out it screwed something up? some wires where under the bracets so i had to take it out to get them out.The red light means the hard drive is not being read properly...
It's either hooked up incorrectly; the jumpers aren't set properly or the drive itself is no good and has failed.well the jumpers are not it, and the drive worked right at one point but now it wont. i switched the jumpers and thepower connections and still nothing, but now the red light dont come on, butnothing is showing up on my moniter and the moeter light is orange but i dont get anylights on the computer eccept one gren light on the motherboard by my proccesser.

Solve : POWERING DOWN AND BOOTING UP?

Answer»

I am working on my Mom's computer. It is a Dell Dimension 1100 and has a problem with powering down and booting up. This may sound WEIRD, but it is happening. When she uses the windows procedure to shut her computer off, it does not completely power down. The power and cpu lights start to flash alternately and will go no FARTHER. She has to push and hold the power button to get it to shut down completely. Then it will not power up when she pushes the button. However if she removes and re-inserts the power supply cord the computer will power up normally. The computer is running Windows XP. It also has Celeron D 325 2.53GHz/80GB/256MB). I talked to a computer repair shop in TOWN and they said the power supply was bad(caused by a power outage a few weeks ago). I REPLACED the power supply with another Dell unit (same model NUMBER) and we have the same problem. Does it do this in safe mode ??

Perhaps the button on the front is broke... ?? Quote from: Spero-T on October 05, 2007, 06:00:14 AM

I doubt the button isn't the problem, although try booting in Safe Mode and see if this problem occurs again.

(in case you don't know how to boot into Safe Mode on XP)

Solve : WWW1?

Answer»

When I insert some web addresses as - http://www.etc - then CLICK to find, the web address sometimes appears as http://www1etc
Where does this 1 come from? why is it there? is there a problem? What web browser are you using? How about your operating system and memory and other hardware specs?
Check for updates for your software as well as spyware and viruses. Of COURSE, without more information, all we can do is do a whole LOT of bad guessing. Some sites uses this because they have multiple servers (in order to handle high loads). So the site could have servers on sub domains called www1, www2, www3, etc and then it balances server load by redirecting visitors to one of these sub domains.
One example that utilizes this method is http://cd-wow.com.

So unless you're experiencing a problem I would say this was quite normal.Deerpark,
Thanks for that information, its put my MIND at rest. I wasn't sure if someone was hijacking and redirecting my input. Now at least I feel a little safer.

Michaewlewis,
I've got a relatively new computer - Advent T9408. IntelCore 2CPU, 1022MB, 1.8gH, 320GB, with Windows vista, using the latest versions of explorer etc., have automatic updates enabled and scan every day for ANYTHING untoward, I'm also using Norton 360 which I find easy (but uninformative) - A bit like vista defragmenting!

Thanks again

Solve : Unwanted website listings?

Answer»

Hey FOLKS,

Maybe I can get some help here. My son came to me with a problem a while ago. My son loves porn sites. He ASKED me if I know a way to delete the temporary internet files. I told him to open up the internet and open up tools. Click on internet options and delete the temporary internet files and cookies.

His girlfriend came home that night and did something on the computer and noticed that he has been to some porn sites. (He is now in trouble)

I am wondering how did she find those when I had him delete the temporary internet files and cookies? I am puzzled.

Can someone explain to me how she found out about the sites?

Thanks,
JeffYou may have cleaned up the temporary internet files, but you neglected to mention History of visited web pages. If you didn't clear the History...there are still tracks to sites he has visited. In addition to Saviour's good advice. 'As always'.

You could download CCleaner.

http://majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

I USE a program I bought by WebRoot called Window Washer.

It is also a good idea for him to not go there if his girlfriend would
be hurt,or offended.how about you tell your kid to CONTROL himself You should also tell him to disable AutoComplete.
IE>Tools>Internet Options>Content>AutoComplete>UNCHECK all boxesThe best way for him to cover his tracks is to not do it.

Solve : Phone off hook?

Answer»

I have HP Officejet Pro L7780 All in one . On the little screen it reads "phone off hook" I have a seperate line for fax. Cand anyone help?So what you are saying is that you are trying to PRINT, but that little screen pops up whenever you click "print"?

You need to go to your control panel, then to Printers and Faxes. Find the printer you want to use, and right-click it. Then click Set As Default. No that is not the ISSUE. I can print, but cannot fax. On the little screen on my printer it reads at all times "phone off hook." I am not aware of any changes being made. I have a seperate line for my fax line and all SEEMS normal and customary.
Thanks Could just be a phone line issue...check the phone line(s) connected to your all-in-one. If necessary, if this line runs to more than one location in the house...see if that line is in use or ANOTHER phone is off the hook.

You can also TRY removing the line from the wall jack and then plug it back in. You can also unplug the all-in-one and turn it back on again. No that is not the issue either. I have tried all of those things. Thank you for your suggerstions.

Solve : moving lines on computer?

Answer»

what do these moving lines on my COMPUTER mean?
what can i do? have already scanned for viruses.Welcome to the CH forums.

It's a bit difficult for us to see the lines but they could be caused by a defective monitor or video card or EVEN just the monitor connections - have you tried unplugging/replugging?. Can you swap monitors for a trial? (don't try that with a LAPTOP).

Can you describe the problem a bit more for us?

Solve : Wireless receiver problem?

Answer»

Hello,
I recently MOVED into a student house and we set up wireless internet. I then bought a belkin wireless receiver (not sure of technical name sorry i'm not very computer literate), when it into the usb ports it works but in doing so cancels out most other usb ports and cd drive so i cannot access anything on my external hard drive or say play a cd at the same time as being on the internet. Is there any way i can solve this problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks

Well this post was really helpful...

The OP states they have a wireless connection...
Does telling them to go wired really help their current issue? I think not...

Anyway...

Sorry, i forgot to mention that i am currently using, including the belkin wireless adapter, 4 of the 7 usb ports. When i remove the belkin all other ports and cd drive become active.
I did install the belkin software prior to use.
I have the latest windows updates. My firewall is a programme called AVG, i have done a malware scan but nothing has been detected. ThanksQuote from: 2k_dummy on September 30, 2007, 03:40:50 PM

Most probable solution. Thanks for all your help guys but i have managed to solve the problem. The computer has 5 usb ports at the back and 2 at the front, i have been using the front 2 for the belkin wireless adapter and the back 5 for the keyboard, external hard drive and printer. On switching the belkin to the back ports it STILL wouldnt let me run 2 things at once but once i switched a few of them round at the back swappin what was in each usb port it now works . Not really sure why but it does so i'm happy.
Thanks alot
JimJim...

Glad to hear it's working out...but...it actually shouldn't have done it in the first place...

If it ain't broke...don't fix it...that's my motto.

However, you may want to keep 2kdummy's advice available...Front USB ports are notoriously under-powered in alot of systems...cost cutting i imagine, but it's a common problem.i noticed that they also don't like to work all the time and they come lose and break easily on desktops and laptops ALIKE

Solve : What Course do you think !!?

Answer»

I am looking to do I.T for A level ! do you have any suggestions what the best field to specialise in would be ? The best field to specialize in would be whatever field you enjoy most.

Or, if your in it for the money, do some research on google to find out what pays best.

What areas of I.T. are you interested in the most?I really enjoy fixing things and design ! Well, I'm in the same position as you (sort of).
I had a choice between ICT A level (which, at the places near me, was basically MS Office and web browsing . . . didn't I pass that already?) or BTEC Nation Diploma for IT Practitioners (worth 3 A levels).
I'm taking the Diploma, and specializing in Systems Support (had a choice between network design, systems support, or software design).
As GX44 says, whatever you enjoy most is the best field - don't take a course in something you hate, waking up and going to work at a job you don't like is the worst thing possible.Quote from: Spero-T on August 29, 2007, 04:56:41 AM

By fixing things, do you mean HARDWARE-wise or problems in the OS (virus/settings/programs/stuff like that)Thanks, I am currently working a solicitors, but need to do more I.T based work... I enjoy working with computers....

ILL look into Systems Support

Thanks !

Edit... Reply to Carbon Dudeoxide

Yeah either or, although I reckon problems in the OS would be a bit more changeling Quote from: Calum on August 29, 2007, 05:25:26 AM
waking up and going to work at a job you don't like is the worst thing possible.

Indeed, thats my current situation. It's horrible.

I'm looking to get into the hardware side of things... possibly networking. Although my short term plan is to start building & selling custom builds. I have a friend who has his own small web development business so thats the channel I'd probably be looking to work through. Only problem is getting started.

There are so many qualifications nowadays for I.T. that it can be quite daunting to start researching it if your not entirely sure what area to specialise in. Think I'll be going for either the CompTIA A+ & N+ (MCSE?) when I get the time.

Spero-T, be sure to keep us posted as to how your getting along with it when you DECIDE to go for it Most heavy equipment operaters make more than their counterparts in the IT field...plus they get to run really big machines and smash stuff ! !Quote from: patio on August 29, 2007, 06:33:43 PM

Thanks for the help everyone, I think I am just going to generalise for this year do a basic I.T course which will cover programming basic web design etc Good luck

Can SOMEONE please help me?What are the system specs (processor speed, RAM installed, ect.)? You probably need to set the BOOT order in the BIOS.I really could not tell you any specs except for it is a compaq armada 1550. when i turn it on it shows 81920kb ok. it does have an intel pentium prcessor, but guessing it's not dual! In fact I can't even get into the bios at startup
Which version of Windows are you attempting to INSTALL?I am attempting win2k.Do you still have the manual for the laptop? It should have instructions on it on how to access the BIOS.
