Solve : I Have A Question?

Answer»

I have an older computer (PC) with no ethernet port, regular dial-up modem. I was wondering if there was any way to run a HIGH speed connection off of it, maybe through some type of adapter? Any information you could give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.AJBlue ....... If you wish to have the ability to connect to the internet via either a dialup or a high speed connection, you will require either a ethernet card or a dialup modem card.
To use either of these cards, you require a AVAILABLE slot on the motherboard.
The type of slot required is either a ISA (old) or PCI ...........

You can get a dsl modem that plugs into your usb port.

It will be USB 1.1 and the operating SYSTEM may not be supported by the provider. For the price of a USB 2.0 card, he may as well get a PCI NIC card.very true...

Solve : Access Listed folder??

Answer»

Ok, there's this folder on my SCHOOL network which contains Halo, but it can only be viewed by studnets from year 9-12 (I have tested that). My brother says that the folder is access listed, and on clicking, it checks if you are on that list. The folder itself, however, can be ENTERED simply by having a SHORTCUT which leads to that folder.

So:
1. Is this folder Access Listed?
2. How would one of these be made (my BRO says Batch, but I doubt that)? Is this any help?

Yes, I think that was probably it, however, since my PC isn't part of a domain, I can't test it. But I'll get around to that soon...

Again, thanks.

Solve : Changing ISP - advice please?

Answer»

I am thinking of changing my ISP. I have been with AOL for the last couple of years, and while they have been adequate for me, I am aware that they are way down the list in terms of service and speed in most comparative assessments.

I should say first off that I am in the UK.

At the moment I have AOL's Silver Service (up to 2 Mbps), and I THINK I would be better served by Zen Internet - they offer 8 Mbps for the same price and have recommendations from some reliable sources. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, I'm not sure what HAPPENS to my email if I change. I presume that I'll need a NEW email address - would I still be able to ACCESS old mail?

Thanks.Well, with many ISPs, you would lose your email service if you switch to another ISP. I don't know much about AOL, but I found this info, which may pertain to you: http://free.aol.com/thenewaol/email.adp

Does this mean you could continue using your existing AOL email address? I don't know for sure. Try Here...

Or Here...Thanks for replies and links.

The AOL link certainly seems to offer continued use of an AOL email address and access.

There is also at the moment an offer from them of an upgrade to 8 Mbps for the same price - but that's with an 18 MONTH contract.

Something to think about...

Thanks again.

Solve : 3.5 floppies?

Answer»

I PURCHASED a thousand floppies from different sellers. All that I have tried, turn the computer off and it restarts, It will continue to restart until the floppy is removed. Most of these are CALLED "ecodisk". They are grey in color.

I store information on floppies everyday and have recorded hundreds of floppies on this computer . It works for all kinds of brands, but for some reason it won't work if the floppy is grey.

This is a Sony Vaio - Windows XP.

If your reply includes how backwards I am, or you just want to know what I'm doing DO NOT reply. If you ACTUALLY have some information - then please help.(Not sure if I know anyone who would think of buying 1000 old 1980's technology, but okay) (and no, thats not an insult, but consider BETTER storage OPTIONS if you plan on storing lots of data)

Go to My Computer, right click the A:\ drive, and click "Format"
Use the default options.
This will destroy any existing data on the floppies. more info on your computerWow that's a lot of floppies. Just out of curiosity... why do you need that many?

But like unlovedwarrior said we need more info.
The computer's specification would be good to know along with what VERSION of windows you use.It is unlikely to be all the floppies are bad if someone else can format them. It is more likely a problem with the floppy drive you insert them in.

What happens if you insert one of the disks you had formatted in the floppy drive? Does it stop the computer? Can you see the it in 3.5" drive under MY Computer?

What version of windows are you using ? What spec. is your computer?

Solve : Researchers study software gender gap?

Answer»

(after reading this, I guess the old saying that men don't stop for directions is old-news!)
Men more likely to use advanced features to ‘debug’, fix errors

SEATTLE - For more than a decade, academics and technology executives have been frowning at the widening gender gap in computer science. Everyone has a theory, but no one has managed to attract many more women.

Now, some computer science researchers say one solution may LIE in the design of software itself — even programs regular PEOPLE use every day.

Laura Beckwith, a new computer science Ph.D. from Oregon State University, and her adviser, Margaret Burnett, specialize in studying the way people use computers to solve everyday problems — like adding formulas to spreadsheets, animation to Web sites and styles to word processing documents.

A couple of years ago, they stumbled upon an intriguing tidbit: Men, it seemed, were more likely than women to use advanced software features, specifically ones that help users find and fix errors. Programmers call this "debugging," and it's a crucial step in building programs that work.

Beckwith decided to investigate why women and men might interact so differently with the same software. She pored over 30 years' worth of books and academic papers from psychologists, education researchers, economists, computer scientists and others about gender differences in problem solving and computer use.

One theory grabbed her attention: High confidence correlates with success. Both men's and women's confidence in their ability to do a challenging task affects their approach and the outcome. And most studies indicated that women — even ones who study computer science — have less confidence than men in their computer skills.

So Beckwith wondered, could that be one of the culprits? Are women less confident than men when it comes to software debugging? Are women less willing than men to try using these advanced features?

Beckwith tackled these and other questions in her DISSERTATION, with guidance from Burnett and Susan Wiedenbeck of Drexel University.

She started by asking a group of women and men, in a questionnaire, whether they believed they could find and fix errors in spreadsheets filled with formulas.

Then, she sat them down in front of a computer with two spreadsheets. One tracked students' grades, and another calculated employees' paychecks.

Beckwith buried five errors in each one without telling the participants. She gave them a time limit and asked them to test all the formulas and fix any bugs.

The program included a debugging feature that helped the users spot miscalculations by the formulas underlying the spreadsheet and other errors. When they clicked on a number that seemed wrong — a grade point average that looked too low, given the student's test scores, for example — cells in the spreadsheet grid that contained the possible source of the error changed color. If the participants were sure a formula or value was correct, they could check it off.

In this experiment, the key to success was using the debugging feature. Both men and women who used it were better at finding and fixing the bugs.

The level of confidence expressed by the participants in the questionnaire about debugging, however, played a much different role for the genders.

For men, it didn't really matter whether they believed they could complete the task. Some men with low confidence used the debugging tools, and some with high confidence didn't.

But for the women, only those who believed they could do the task successfully used the automated debugging tools. The women with lower confidence in the task relied instead on what they knew — editing formulas one by one — and ended up introducing more bugs than when they started.

Beckwith was faced with a conundrum. From questionnaires handed out after the experiment, she knew women understood how the debugging tools were supposed to work, so it seemed their confidence level was lower than it deserved to be. She also knew that one way to boost confidence is through successful experiences. But it was this low confidence that was keeping women from using the debugging tool and having a successful experience.

As a computer scientist, Beckwith wasn't interested in changing women's confidence levels. She was interested in whether changing the software could help women over this hurdle.

So she explored whether a gentler presentation of the debugging tool, one that seemed to require less confidence, would appeal to women.

In the first study, the debugging tool let users mark values "right" or "wrong." To mark something as wrong, participants had to right-click with the mouse.

In later studies, Beckwith added two more choices: "seems right maybe" and "seems wrong maybe." The "maybe" buttons worked just like the more certain-seeming ones, but used softer colors to indicate possible errors. She also changed the program so that no one needed to right-click the mouse, something less-experienced computer users are reluctant to do.

Beckwith tested the new feature during several other experiments. When she tallied up the numbers, she found that in some experiments, women used some form of the debugging feature almost as often as men did. In others, they used the debugging tools even more than men did.

Although these experiments homed in on a tiny aspect of a computer user's life — debugging spreadsheets — the implications could be quite large.

Burnett, the Oregon State professor, estimates that 55 U.S. million computer users of both genders are essentially writing programs even if they don't know it — such as when they set up filters on their e-mail.

While software used by the country's 3 million professional programmers include ample debugging tools to ensure their code works as it should, the increasingly complex software used by everyday PC users doesn't.

Research like Beckwith's may help ensure that when the industry starts adding new features for those everyday computer users, differences between men and women aren't left out of the equation.

What's more, making complex everyday software more accessible to women could help get more of them interested in computer science, Beckwith and Burnett believe.

As it is, the percentage of bachelor's degrees in computer science awarded to women fell from 37 percent in 1985 to just 22 percent in 2005, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, even as women made GAINS in other science and math-based fields.

Most gender-gap theories today have more to do with computer science's image as a haven for solitary male geeks. Industry groups and high-tech companies tend to suggest remedies like mentoring girls, and changing computer science education to better show how the field is connected to everyday topics thought to be of more interest to girls, like media, SHARING and communicating.

While Beckwith and Burnett acknowledge that there are numerous social and developmental factors behind the gender gap, they say their research adds a new dimension to the debate.

"The first time you as a girl sit down at a computer to do some real problem solving," Burnett said, "and the software you're using isn't a good fit for your learning style, your problem solving style, how likely are you to be to say, `I'm going to grow up and be a computer scientist?'"

Julie Jacko, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and president of the Association for Computing Machinery's group on human-computer interaction, said research like Beckwith's could end up changing how young women feel about computers.

"We know from our colleagues in psychology and sociology that there are gender differences that can be very important to take into account in human-computer interaction and software design," Jacko said. "Projects like this can help us have a better impact, even at younger ages, where I believe interventions need to happen."

The research may be early, but the software industry is paying attention. Beckwith's first job isn't in academia — it's at Microsoft Corp.

There, she'll put her research experience to work helping the team that designs software for programmers. That group has never given much thought to the user's gender, said Susan Todd, Beckwith's boss-to-be.

"In the past, since we concentrate so much on developers — and as you know, there are not a lot of women developers — we haven't really gone in that direction," Todd said. "I think it's going to be something that will be really quite interesting for us to look at."

But don't expect "Excel for Women" any time soon. Beckwith and Burnett point out that there are male computer users whose learning styles and problem-solving skills have more in common with the typical female user, and vice versa.

As Burnett said, "We're not advocating a pink version of blue version of software, because that wouldn't fit anybody."

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20952802/
I've noticed that, women tend to be less confident than men when using a computer.i've noticed that also. i wonder why? Although I also noticed that women tend to use the communication tools a computer offers more than men.

while doing some troubleshooting steps for the printer, it said restart windows, i did that but when the computer restarted only the fan runs. i don't hear any of the NORMAL clicking, beeping, and associated noises. there is no display at all on the monitor. i have tried de-dusting, pulling cards and re-seating them all but no luck. what could this problem be? please advise. thanks.I'm am having a similar problem...I'm about to post. Might help to try some things I have... :-/Bump! Well I'm a newbie here and didn't want to start a new thread. Thus I will use this already created post. (since my pc's problem is similar to this!) I was sort of forced to put my pc in my basement Yes it is humid there. (I have since bought a dehumidifier) My pc will turn "on" as will all the fans. A few lights inside come on. That's it. My "off" button has no effect no matter how long I hold it. Things will shut off only by the power on/off SWITCH. I have cleaned/reseated vid card, ram, ect... I also get no "beeps" (I swapped keyboards) I KNOW one thing for sure, I'm not sure. Power supply? MB? This pc was built about 3 years ago and has an asus delux mb. Intel, ati vid card. I can give much more detail if anyone needs more. If someone has a great solution I'd be a very happy camper. I understand with these things more info/effort on my part will be required. I'd really just like a place to start and then take it from there. Thanks for any help! antxxny we encourage users to start new threads instead of adding to an existing. The main reason is that even THOUGH issues might be similar it can very easily turn out to have very different causes and solutions. It can also get CONFUSING if we have more than one set of problems in a thread.
So please go start a new thread instead. Be sure to include as many details as possible.10-4!

Solve : warped images?

Answer»

I have a Dell laptop COMPUTER running windows xp. EVERYTHING was fine until I stupidly installed a very large computer game file. I uninstalled the game, DEFRAGMENTED the disk and did all the clean up I could think of. My computer is fine except for one annoying problem... all the images are warped. Text is fine but all the photographs are stretched horizontally maybe five percent. They print fine, but it makes it very annoying to try to work with photographs on the computer since i can't see what they really look LIKE. Please help me fix this!is your desktop stretched too??

have you tried restoring it to before you installed the game?

what was the game?

did you buy the game? or illegally dl it?The desktop is not stretched. The only thing affected seems to be jpeg images-photographs. Not just the images in my photo album but also jpeg images on web pages. Any images om web pages that are part of files like advertisements that use flash ect. aren't affected. The game was not illegal. it was the sims 2 and from a disk my roommate owns. It was just to big for my laptop and the computer froze up and RESTARTED in safe mode. then I uninstalled it. I can't restore my computer because I tried to clean up the disk and I think i accidentally deleted my restore points along with the temporary files in the clean up process. I think the game may have reset some computer function related to viewing images I'm just not sure what it is....right click on the desktop go to properties settings and mess with the resolution.

about the restore points go to start all programs accessories system tools system restore and click restore to an earlier date and see if you have a point to restore toThank You So Much!! It was the resolution. I changed it and everything's fine! I never could have figured it out! You're the best!your very welcome I'm glad I could help

Solve : My downloads are saving before they are completely finished. Why is this??

Answer»

My downloads are saving before they are completely finished.

For example, I will begin saving a file that is 25 megs. It will start the download fine, but once it reaches 18 megs, the computer prompts that the download has completed when I know that this is not true. The file that is SAVED is incomplete and corrupt.

This has been going on for about a week, and I would like to know what the problem could be. Sometimes I get lucky and recieve the whole file, but rarely. Any ideas on what could be happening? I seem to remember this problem being solved by clearing temporary internet files, of COURSE I could be mistaken my brain is getting old now.
There is no reason why that should work but try it ANYWAY, nothing to lose.Let's hope that'll work. If not...

What OS are you using?
What browser are you using?
What protection do you have?
What type of connection do you have?
How are you downloading your files?
Do you have a download manager?

hi.does anyone know how to get on the internet without having to connect?I have heard about going offline but I want to know also if you are able to make a page avaliable offline.
Good afternoon

Yes, you can view pages offline, however, I will warn you:
This is extremely hard on servers bandwidth. Never go more than 3 LINKS deep into the synchronization process, this wasts bandwidth horribly.

Unfortunately, I don't remember how to do this exactly, but, go into Internet Explorer, and press the F1 key, and search for Synchronization for the exact details for your version of Internet Explorer

Click START> Programs> Accessories> and somewhere in there, there should be a Synchronization program, try that out

I realize that this message reply was very vague, but my whole POINT was to get the fact across that it hurts webmasters bandwidth when you synchronize too far into a website. In Internet Explorer, go to File, Save As, and save the page. In Firefox, File, Save Page As.

my pc is making SOUND everytime i open alot of STUFF or busy (e.g. playing GAMES such as CS or any heavy games) i have Pentium 4 3.0 Ghz, 1G RAM Memory, 200GB HDD.

is it because the memory is too small? No it will not be because of your memory.

What kind of sound is it making?really?

the sound is just like a door BUZZ, U know the buzzer on apartments.
it just goes continuously until its not busy.

do u know what the cause is?Have you checked inside the computer case that nothing is loose?

Could be the hard drive chassis are loose and when the drive spins fast (when busy) is vibrates.no i checked it, and the sound doesnt come from the hard drive.
it was from the are where the memories r put. like where the motherboard is and stuffSee if you can wobble the motherboard by gently trying to move it.

When I did this it would just keep repeating itself over and over. Since then, with the help of you guys, I was able to go into bios and change my boot options to boot from cd. I thought that was working but when I am INSTALLING xp it gets to about 3 minutes remaining and goes to a blue screen. the ERROR message is different every time I try to reinstall WINDOWS and depends upon the time left when the message COMES on. The main one that it keeps telling me is page_fault_in_unpaged_area. I talked with a guy from microsoft for 4 HOURS tring to get this resolved. I have talked with 2 guys I know who, in my opinion are the best there is and no one can help me. Tonight I left the computer with a friend who said he would work on it some more. Solve : Sandisk: Micros SD?

Answer»

Hey guys,
Well i have the 1 GB MicroSD in my Samsung D900, and recently a few folders with very odd names have appeared. The names are below: BBONETH.~1M
X
~
ÿÿN

When I try to delete them all it says is 'Cannot read from file source or disk', and when I try to delete them via my D900 it says 'No Entry'.
Also I have alot of pictures of me and my mates on it, but would like to delete a few that I have backed up on my HDD. However when i try to delete them via my laptop it gives me the exact same 'Cannot read from file source or disk' error.
Any ideas?!?!
Thanks

ChrisGood to see you again Chris...where ya been ?
Have you ran chkdsk on that laptop recently ? ?
If not go ahead and run chkdsk /r...
Then re-boot into safemode and see if you can remove the offending files.
If not we'll bring out the big guns !Hey mate. Thanks, yea Ive had a really rough time lately. Alot of stuffs just decided to all happen at once. Ive also been with my mates loads just chilling all the time. Doing what teenagers do.
Anyway back to the problem:
Sorry for my newbie question but do I need my D900 plugged in at this time, as they are on my D900.
Thanks bud

ChrisWell i don't normally run chkdsk on flash drives but it did bail me out once with a stubborn one...
Is the rest of the data backed up just in case ? ?
I have also had good success with the following little utility:

Flash Drive Disinfector

Let us know how it goes...Nope
Problems still there.
However just something I thought you should know, even when I dont plug my D900 in when i run the Disinfecter it still says 'Done'.
Its connected via USB with my D900 in 'Mass Storage' mode.
Any more ideas?!
Thanks

ChrisThe disinfector can't tell real drives from flash...i noticed that the 2nd time i ran it i had no flash drive plugged in and it still said done.
Did you try removing the files in safemode ? ?Have TRIED to delete from the command prompt? From WINDOWS explorer? Have you looked to see what attributes are set on the folders?QUOTE from: 2k_dummy on September 10, 2007, 12:47:57 PM

Have tried to delete from the command prompt? From windows explorer? Have you looked to see what attributes are set on the folders?

Done all three. Attributes have the 'Archive', 'Read Only' and 'Hidden' all unticked.
Patio ill just try safe mode now.
Back in a moment.

ChrisNope

ChrisCan you OPEN the folders? If there are any files in the folders that have h,s,r, attributes set, the folders often will not delete. Deltree or equivelent command might do the trick.Nope, when I try to go into them I get an error message
'G:\Music\(and then the file name) is not accessible.
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorect'
Any more ideas guys?!
Thanks

ChrisKillBox

How old is your flash drive? You know they don't really last all that long. If you do a lot of data transfers or writes to the drive it could have reached its limit. Just buy another one off newegg for $10 Perhaps you should just reformat the drive, that can take care of any file system errors, which can result in circumstances like the one you currently have (weird file names, random errors)

Killbox didin't work
And its not really one that I can 'Just buy another'. Micro SD's aren't cheap, though if I pulled a few strings I could get one fairly cheap. Anyway I've only had it about 6 months and it shouldn't be dying on me already. I think ill try a format Zlystra.
Thanks All!

An A+ Certification is probably an INDEPENDENTLY created test based on the college or training course you are attending.

Check with the place you plan on obtaining your A+ Certification.

If its something that sounds hard, don't SKIP out on A+ Certification, SINCE many businesses look for it.

THANKS JEFF
Good evening:

Try this:
In Internet Explorer, click Tools> Options> Connections> LAN> and select "Automatically detect proxy"
Then click OK
and then go to Advanced, and restore the defaults.
If that still fails, and its really important to you, and if you have Internet Explorer, you can click the reset button under Advanced, and that will uninstall ALL extensions, reset your temporary internet files, and all that yadda yadda. You will be required (eventually) to reinstall some of your extensions as you enter sites that need them.

Solve : Computer = Phone?

Answer»

Hello, I have posted this in a new topic as i am not sure what it should COME under and this is my first post. my query is in relation to making and receiving calls from my computer. is it possible using a computer with broadband connection to make and receive phone calls from mobiles and land lines (the equivalent to a house phone). do i need to use VoIP and purchase hardware as well as software. if so what are some recommendations. i hope i am making myself clear if not leave a message and i will add more detail. Much thanks to all and i hope that this helps not just me but others.

Thank you,
Morpheus_13I do belive msn has the abilty to call land lines....

Skype is one option, and a good one. I've seen it demo'd and know some people who use it and like it.

I use Yahoo Messenger's PC-to-phone feature to do this. So far, I've only used it for outgoing calls, but I can set up a special number to receive incoming calls and I think I'm going to do so soon.

Hardware requirements? Just a microphone, or a headphone unit that provides both mic and ear piece. I just use a mic and listen via my regular speakers. This works fine if I don't GET too close to the speakers; that can cause some UNDESIRED feedback to the other party. Personally, I like Skype.
Remember though, that it costs money to make calls to landlines or mobiles (anything other than Skype).
Also, it will not replace your house phone, in the UK at least you need a landline to call emergency 999.Yes, it does cost money if calling a landline or cell phone but not as much as regular landline long distance calls, at least here in the U.S. It save me some money; that's what I like about it.

And, like in the UK, such services as Skype or Yahoo Messenger can not be used to call 911 in the U.S.Good afternoon
You may want to remember this:
VoIP services, most of them, cannot call 911 unless they have an e911 service, and the emergency service station near you also has e911.

A service that I haven't used, but that I have read a lot about is Vonage, which, has, I think, a VoIP service for your computer, as well as phone line. www.vonage.com
You may consider services like Vonage more practical for personal use. Hi! A couple of months ago I was planning on switching to a computer phone too but when I was speaking with the rep who was using this type of phone, her voice sounded very WOBBLY like she was speaking underwater. I probably should have APPROACHED other companies but have decided to wait for now.Quote from: computerhelppls on September 17, 2007, 07:17:29 PM

Hi! A couple of months ago I was planning on switching to a computer phone too but when I was speaking with the rep who was using this type of phone, her voice sounded very wobbly like she was speaking underwater. I probably should have approached other companies but have decided to wait for now.
Some services are better than others.

Dont be afraid to use free trials on different services, and even if the first one you try is fine, keep trying more, you might find something even better. I don't think they offered a free trial at the time but I will keep your advice in mind. THX. The sound quality has been good with Yahoo Messenger's PC-to-phone service during the time I've used it. They have an introductory deal where you pay $10 for 1,000 minutes, i.e. $0.01/min. for that first $10. More info here:
http://voice.yahoo.com/phone_calls.php;_ylt=ApYC44bALWCM.b10BArWO.Gy6.t3

Sometimes, I do notice a slight delay. But, overall, I'm satisfied with the service. I have been using Skype for about 10 months.......... (Pc to land line) both local and long distance.
We use it for almost all of our long distance calls.........
The quality is excellant 99% of the time. If we do happen to get a bad connection, we simply end that call and reconnect.

dl65 I have also seen Skype phones available. These phones connect directly via wireless to the Skype network, so you can call with them from wherever you can get wireless. They have the same shape as a regular cell phone.

Solve : Toshiba Satellite M35, cant get it opened?

Answer»

Good AFTERNOON:

My friend has a Toshiba Satellite M35 notebook, and he is having trouble getting it opened.

I guess theres something WRONG with it (I am not exactly sure what) but he cannot get the case off of it, its being very stubborn. He has tried removing all the screws, and it yielded no good results. Something is holding it shut inside the laptop (I suspect the mouse pad)

What procedures should be followed while OPENING a Toshiba Satellite notebook?

Thank you very much,

Solve : July poll?

Okay, I have to chime in here. I don't call anyone for computer support. If I can't figure it out, I get online and wear out Google and techie forums, like this one. And I have to be in dire need to call any other company for support and this is why (two days ago):

First you have to know that I spent two weeks explaining to DirecTV and my local stations that I DO NOT get a satellite signal for local stations. So much for their second dish. The local guys can't figure out why I can't get local SIGNALS on my DirecTV dish. I have been electronically enclined since the age of about 8, things like the above don't confuse me. Explaining the situation to people who don't get it, exasperates me no end.

ME to DirecTV Customer Service Genius: I need ANOTHER installer out here to confirm that I do not get a local signal from any satellite. OR tell me the first installer was in too much of a hurry to find one and put up the right dish and get me my channels. PS: it will be on your dime since local channels are IN my contract.

CSG: Ok, Ms. English, let me run you through some tests to see what I can do from here. (Note: From here is in TN or NV. From here means he pulled up a how-to-deal-with-cranky-old-ladies manual on his screen.

CSG: Now, Ms English, are you watching a local channel right now?

And they say the customer asks the dumbest questions!! Wanted to yank him through my phone. And that is why I the last resort is my motto!I personally never use tech support. I either try to solve it my self, use google, or come here. I find support to be a waste of time.

When I used to have Adelphia cable before switching to Verizon DSL we would frequently lose our connection at random. I or someone else in the family would spend time talking to support only to have them say the problem was on our end like they always said. It's as if they're afraid to admit that they might be responsible for my problem.

Websites like eBay will announce when there performing updates and general maintainace to their servers so as to alert users of a possible slow down or inability to access site.

Here at CH users may have to wait a few hours for a REPLY to his/her problem, but at least they don't have to be on hold for an hour or more wasting time doing nothing productive. Its really DEPENDS on my mood.
If is very urgent than max.I try 5-10 min.
Otherwise less than 5 min.Good 'Champagne Elevator Music"... still the key to the

nightmare. The last time I called support, I got an automated robot thing that you actually spoke to.

Usually, I like the online chat services better (which many companies now have).Calling Product Support? You really REALLY mean this what people call "Product Support"? HAHAHAHA! I'd like to see someone get support at least ONCE! I don't even get help for a 'Compaq Presario M2000' using the online chat nor e-mail.

My opinion: Don't call product support. Try all possible ways of fixing the problem, if it still doesn't WORK, force it - resort to a hammer and a coat hanger!

i called dell because my cousin old laptop wouldn't go past the windows load screen and the tech asked " ok log onto the account for me" right after i told him We just called Dish Support yesterday, it keeps cutting out. Its annoying. The dish should be aimed correctly.
We CANT figure out whats wrong, and we are going to have to pay $50 to have someone take a look if we cant get it, but everything is in place. Dish is in the exact correct direction, so it has to be a fault in the cables somewhere. I actually despise calling technical servies
I was once on hold for 1 and a half hours waiting for help, which after that long period of time, it turns out they couldn't help me

I'm so used to calling them since I can never really fix much myself, and I'm always on hold, listening to the annoying songs these services provide

Yes. I think you will find, most likely, that XP probably had an SP at around the same time (dont count on my word, I admit, I disliked XP greatly when it first came out)
Half the XP discs out there have SP1 on them anyways

Solve : EMAILING HOME VIDEOS TAKEN W/DIGITAL CAMERA?

hi everyone

would someone know how to email a video. I will not ALLOW me because it says its too big to send. but I know that there most likely is a way.
Please help pop pop would love to see little GRANDSONS FIRST day of pre SCHOOL. note: I do not have a working burner so cannot make cd

thanks to all in advance for your help Some Internet Service Providers limit the size of email you can send and/or receive.

Your best bet is to FIND a site where you can upload the video to...like Kodak (where you can share photos, too) and send the link to the video in an email.or youtube.com etc.. upload it to a myspace accountQuote from: unlovedwarrior on September 15, 2007, 09:10:49 PM

or youtube.com etc.. upload it to a myspace account
But then either everyone could see it, or they would also have to have an account.they might
Or edit the video into part one and part two...sending it in two separate e-mails...

Or compress the video...into a smaller file...Brand new DVD burners are down to 40 bucks shipped from various online vendors...How about Winrar?

Compress it, using the split to volumes option.

Or would that be too complicated?

Solve : cursor and mouse are not in snyc????

Answer»

Hi! Thanks for your help. I am really not too knowledgable on computers and would like to know what is going on with mine.
For the past 2 days, my cursor and mouse seems to be disconnecting on the screen making it really frustrating to do anything on the internet. It seems to cut in and out while I am surfing. It is really frustrating - actually started making my stomach feel abit woozy the longer I tried to make them connect. The mouse has a red laser underneath and rests on a cushioned pad which is smooth and clean. I have tried unplugging then plugging the mouse cord into the main unit a couple of TIMES. Yesterday I just shut the whole computer down for a few hours. When it started up again it was fine but then reverted back to this nauseating disconnection.
Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank-you. Have you tried CLOSING unnecessary programs?
Does this issue happen on all websites?
What Operating System do you have? How much RAM and CPU do you have on your computer?
What Antivirus protections do you have?
What web browser are you using?
Does this happen only on the internet? Does it happen while using other things on your computer?

Possible solutions:
Move the mouse to the top left hand corner...
Disable mouse trailing
Reinstall Drivers
Scan for, and remove any viruses

Possible causes:
Virus
Out of System Resources
Website using Flash or Java, taking too MANY resources
Bad application
Random ERROR... these happen.. "happens just because"
Bad Driver
Bad mouse software
Incorrect settings

Zylstra - Thank-you for all your advice. It seems to be working fine once I am on this website, but to get here it was going in random directions - and does seem to happen on different websites. I can't answer all your questions because I am not sure of the answers but just added a free antivirus program (AGV - I think that's the name) and it has detected no virus threats today, last night it found one hidden and unhealable but it is not showing today. I will try try some of your solutions if it happens again. THX. Quote from: computerhelppls on September 16, 2007, 07:50:57 PM

Did you do a full system scan after installing AVG?

I think that its a possibility that the websites you visit are using Flash, and your computer may be too slow for Flash. You can try reinstalling Flash, but do not install the Yahoo toolbar, by visiting this link:
http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlashThanks again. Yes I did do the full scan and last night it said there was one threat, hidden and unhealable. Then today there were 0 threats. When I type in this box it is fine, but as soon as I post and move to another page it is back. (that's why it has taken me sometime to get back to this site- I wasn't even sure if it was posted or not) I tried the upper left hand and it takes some time for it to quiet down and get in sync if it does at all. It seems to be a hit or MISS - sometimes on the google search page sometimes its okay. It just cut in for one character as I type on here. You may be right about visiting sites that have more resources than this computer can handle but I those that come to mind are ones I have been participating in (like this) for awhile and they are slow to change pages, respond etc. - but not where the cursor and mouse go completely out of sync. I will download the program you suggested. Thank-you. Reinstall Drivers....

Try new mouse.... Thanks for all you advice. I tried many and finally uninstalled a new internet security system I loaded the same day it started and now the mouse and cursor are in sync just alittle delayed in response time. I hope i am not speaking too soon. Thanks again. Crank it up in your Control Panel>Mouse. Thanks!

THAT MAKES ME FEEL A LOT BETTER, SINCE I HAVE ALREADY PLACED THE ORDER !! Everything that I've read and understand says Hoventops is correct. All digital or HDTVs you purchase today will have the required tuner in the TV that allows it receive the signal properly now and in 2009. If by some chance you've purchased one of the earlier manufactured digital TVs it will actually state on the box that it does not have a digital tuner and that one will need to be purchased. I knew they were going to switch over but didn't know it was going to be so soon. I bet alot of people don't even know the date is so close. The old analog tv's last forever, its going to be tough on some people.Well was going to be earlier but has been delayed. However, I think this is a pretty set date and will not be delayed again. It is fast approaching and I believe you're correct Robert that most people are not even aware of it, which is why I thought it would be a good monthly poll. Let's just blame SONY for everything..I do i think you and i will get along well. as long as you appreciate playstations (different area of production).Hmmm...... I dont like ps1...

But PS2 PSIII are very good !! ps3 can kiss my *** Looks like Analog TV cable viewers may get some more time. According to this article cable providers must provide an analog signal until 2012.i don't need a "whatever kind of tv" since i used my monitor to play ps2.

Solve : installing XP on two h disks?

Answer»

If i have TWO hard disks can i intall Windows XP on both and use them
on the same computer?

This I am asking because I Want to work on two programs (both need Windows XP for running properly) and both can not RUN on the same Windows XP operating system simultaneously.

So is it possible that I use the two h disks on the same computer, partition them, and then install Win XP on both h disks? And if i install the two programs on the two h disks will they run properly?

ThanksnoYes, its possible, I personally don't know how (but you cant run them at the same time), but I thought I might provide this for an alternative:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx
Its free to download, don't worry. (and you can run them at the same time)
You might consider putting the virtual HDD file on your second drive, that way, you can simultaneously access data.

Recall:
WGA can and will prevent you from using both OS's at the same time, and it will sneak onto the internet. Quote

This I am asking because I Want to work on two programs (both need Windows XP for running properly) and both can not run on the same Windows XP operating system simultaneously.
So you want to install 2 XPs on seperate HDDs and run them simultaneously so that you can run 1 program on each at the same time.... NO.

Edit: Take it up another notch and get 2 computers. Quote from: Fed on September 13, 2007, 06:06:14 PM

I already have two computer (or, more precisely, system units), but the other is a Pentium II and although XP can be installed on it, it gets harder to run some programs on a PII machinewith XP installed. So I was thinking to get the h disk of the PII machine into the PIII.Quote from: Fed on September 13, 2007, 06:06:14 PM

Yeah I want to run to XP from the same computer, but from separate PHYSICAL hard disk (pls note that i am not talking about separate partions on same disks,
but talking about separate h disks, thatn means the two h disks can have
one or more partitions on each of them, and i install XP on the first drive of
those two h disks).Quote from: shouvik on September 16, 2007, 08:10:33 PM

Its not possible...
The best thing you can do is download Virtual PC 2007 (free) from Microsoft and create a VPC for XP, and then have the VPC HD file on the separate HDD. This allows you to run two XP Operating Systems at the same time, while keeping them separate.

Solve : Nortons?

Answer»

How do iset the firewall in my nortons?Im so confuseddddddddddddddd.Don't be...we all GET confuesed sometimes...that's why we're here...

What exactly are you trying to do with your product?Just trying to SET the firewall alittle lower so maybe ICAN get in the chat rooms,Cant get in some of them since my pc got repaired,Thought it might help. What chat software are you trying to use?
Is it a website, or a program (that most likely contains adware or spyware... which is why it MAY be blocked)

Its not recommended that you lower your Firewall protection. If you cannot get to a chat room because of Parental Content Filters, then find the administrator of the PC (whoever installed the parental control software) and ask them to allow you.

If it is a program, you can allow it by going into the Firewall settings, and click "add program" or "allow program" under "Trusted applications/programs" (or anything similar to this) and searching for the application you want to use.

Solve : online trouble?

hello i have a fairly new laptop running windows vista

i cant connect to itunes store, online poker or anything else that requires connecting to the internet

i have all these programs checked to be allowed in my firewall but they still dont work

any help would be apreciated
thank you

-mikeCan you browse websites? What TYPE of connection are you using? What protection do you have?i can browse websites that works fine
im using a network connection at my college its fast cable
and im protected by norton antivirus
and have the firewall set to allow everything i want to useWhen you first connected to the college network, an option should've come up to choose ONE of three types of locations and protection for the connection: Home, Work, and Public. Which did you choose?i dont remember it did come up THO..what should i choose? and how do i change it?I cannot QUITE remember how to do this, so there are different things you can try. First, go to your Windows Firewall and see if there are settings there that you can change, then go to network connections in the control panel and check the settings there.

Oh and make sure that if you do changet the settings, your computer is properly protected. Because if you change the settings it will be less secure. So be sure that Norton and Vista are updated, and you can also download and run Ad-Aware for extra protection. You may consider running Windows Updates by CLICKING Start> Control Panel> Security> "Check for Updates"

Install any updates that are on the list. This should update the Windows firewall, and fix any problems with it.

Solve : Ports not working?

Answer»

My USB ports and the serial ports have stopped working all of a sudden. My printer won't work and putting in a picture card from my camera or even plugging the camera in won't work. Could anyone give me any ideas on what the problem could be. Thanks! How many "serial ports" do you have? What serial port devices do you use? Does your printer CONNECT to a USB port?

You have a card reader installed in your computer, right? So, you can insert your camera card into the card reader or you can connect your camera via USB cable, right?

Have you restarted your computer since this problem started?

I have one serial port. In that, I am trying to plug in a 9-pin serial cord that connects to my satellite BOX. My printer does connect to a USB port. I have a card reader installed in my computer. However, it is no longer reading my memory card. Nothing comes up when I insert it, or when I plug in any USB device. I have restarted my computer multiple times. I have updated all drivers (even the motherboard files). Any suggestions? If you open Device Manager, does it show any yellow triangles with exclamation marks? Does it show "Universal serial bus CONTROLLERS"? How many items does it show under "Universal serial bus controllers"? Does it indicate they are all working properly? No yellow triangles with exclamation marks. Yes it shows Universal Serial Bus Controllers. It shows 4 which are: Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, Standard Open HCD USB Host Controller, USB Root Hub, and another USB Root Hub, and it shows they are all working properly. Here's a procedure that sometimes resolves problems with USB ports not being recognized. Open Device Manager and EXPAND the section for Universal serial bus controllers. Right click on each item there and select UNINSTALL to uninstall it. Close Device Manager and restart your computer. Windows should give you a message indicating it found new hardware. Let Windows proceed to install the new hardware, i.e. the USB drivers.

Now, try using a USB device. Does it work?

To verify your OE settings for HTML mail format and sending pictures, go to Tools, Options, Send, and verify that HTML is selected (under Mail Sending Format). Click on the HTML Settings button and verify that "Send pictures with messages" is checked.Thank you soybean, that worked fine. Great stuff. I learn something new every day.

Solve : keyboard shortcuts?

Answer»

Is there a SHORTCUT for "save as" in Lotus Word Pro?Some APPLICATIONS do not have a shortcut for "Save As", but they do usually have a shortcut for "Save" which is usually CTRL+S
Sometimes, CTRL+SHIFT+S will do a Save As

Click the FILE menu, and look at the "Save As". Does it have SOMETHING like CTRL+SHIFT+S WRITTEN next to it? If it does, that is the keyboard combination for it. hit alt-F and then look at the save as option, what letter is underlined? hit the underlined letter on the keyboard. Underlined letters in menus mean that is the letter you can press on the keyboard to run that command.

For Save As, it's usually Alt-F, then A.

Solve : laptop for travel?

Answer»

We are planning a trip to Australia next year and want to take a laptop capable of wireless internet and e-mail only. We currently have a laptop but its weight of 10 LBS makes it a nuisance to travel with. Have done so but this trip is much longer. We use the laptop to check with elderly family back home and book rooms a day or so ahead so speed is not a problem but wireless is, also cost as this would be just a computer for travel not everyday use. Any help gratefully accepted.Well, this might be good choice for your purposes; it only weighs 2 lbs. The OS is Linux, not Windows. But, learning to use it for email should not be very difficult. If you want to use an email client installed in the computer and download your mail to the computer, a POPULAR email program called Thunderbird runs on Linux. And, the popular web browser, Firefox, runs on Linux.

Note that this computer is not the normal size of laptop and notebook PCs. It's quite a bit smaller, with only a 7 inch wide screen. I believe there's a specific name for the size but I can't think of it now. The ONLINE seller I'm linking to here did put it in AMONG their listings for laptops and notebooks.

The seller, newegg.com, only ships within the U.S. I don't know your location. Here's the computer: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220244 The cost: $400 plus shipping.I think the word you're looking for is "subnotebook", soybean.

That does look like a tasty laptop, a friend of mine is buying one in the UK soon and it does look good.
Be aware of the fairly small storage space, but you could always buy more storage (it has USB ports so you could use flash drives, or it has an SD/MMC slot so you could GET a high capacity SD or MMC memory card). Also, there is no CD drive.
However, I do still think it's a good choice, it's very portable and has a good battery life.

Solve : Increase The Number Of Download Sessions In Vista?

Answer»

Thanks to:
http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/windows/2007/11/07/increase-the-number-of-download-sessions-in-vista

To comply with INTERNET standards, your browser is configured to allow for only TWO simultaneous downloads. For users that do not frequently download, this value is probably sufficient. For those who frequently download, this may be a limitation. In such cases, you can increase the number of concurrent downloads to 10.

To do this, though, you need to edit your system’s Registry. Be sure to back up your Registry before you PROCEED with the following steps:

1. OPEN the Start menu and type Registry Editor in the Search field.
2. NAVIGATE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\WINDOWS\CURRENTVERSION\INTERNET SETTINGS.
3. Click Internet Settings.
4. Right-click an empty area in the right pane, point to New, and click DWORD Value.
5. Right-click New Value #1 and click Modify. In the Value Name field, type the name of the value: MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server. Type 10 in the Value Data field, select the Decimal radio button, and click OK.
6. Create a second value using the previous steps. Name this value MaxConnectionsPerServer. Type 10 in the Value Data field, select the Decimal radio button, and click OK.
7. Close the Registry Editor.

Note: You may have it set already to "10", so, double check it.

Solve : Can't create folders on flash drive?

Answer»

I run Windows Office 2003 on Windows XP Media Player. I am having an intermittent problem with moving or creating new folders to my flash drive. I have no trouble when I open Explorer and cut/copy and paste files from my hard drive, but if I try that with a folder, I GET the message: "Unable to create the folder ‘New Folder’ The directory or file cannot be created". I've created files on this drive before and at other times I've received a similar message. I receive the same message if I change flash drives, so I don't thinkthe problem is with the flash drive. Am I inadvertently CHANGING something that is blocking folder creation? I am clueless as to how to check out a programming or command glitch (if that's what it is. There is no problem with access to any of the files on my flash drive, but it's annoying to occasionally be unable to organize them WITHOUT knowing how to correct or go around the "roadblock". Any suggestions, anyone?
goldie917Open the flash drive in My Computer...select File/New and create a folder.
This can then be renamed to whatever you want.
There has to be a folder existing on the drive to enable dragging and dropping a folder to it.Thanks, Patio, but your SUGGESTION produces the same message as I cited above. I appreciate the effort, THOUGH. I think that I must have inadvertantly changed some property or permission, but I don't know what is blocking folder creation only on the flash drive(s).
Some flash drives have a teeny teeny switch on them for security...this disables being able to write to them.Again, good suggestion--but no go. The flash drive is an Attache, 1G, and there aren't any parts to move. I suspect it's likely to be MS Office or XP related, as it "feels" like a permission or property issue. I might have changed something like that without realizing it, as I'm the only one controlling this laptop.
goldie917
I would copy all the data on the drive currently onto your machine and check it to see it's valid.
Then Open up Disk Management by right clicking My Computer/Manage and Disk Management and format the flash drive.
See if this solves the issue...Patio,
A blessing on your head! Does that mean the flash drive unformatted itself?
goldie917
It means whatever was blocking access to the flash drive is now gone.
Glad to hear you are fixed up and stop by anytime...

Solve : Listen you guys i need your help.?

Answer»

Here's my story:

i have an 80 GB Hard drive capacity laptop. however, my C drive is ony 15 and my D drive is 65 Gb.

My C drive on which all of my programs are INSTALLED is low on space now. i ve installed one CAD program which consumed about 8 GB plus and that was only one program.

i want to back-up everything such that i DONT lose any of my data or programs and format my computer and partition it so that both drives i have are divided equally. 40 by 40.

i have a 500 GB external hardrive to do so.

do you have any recommendations and articles to read in order to do so? i havent formatted a computer in my life. i dont even know what command i need to perform if from using DOS. Do i need to install windows all over again from the CD, or the windows backs itself up on my external hard drive during the back-up operations?

or should i just give it to someone who knows about all this STUFF and let him do it?

would really appreciate it if you can tell me about articles and tutorials about formattign and partitioning to read about.

thx.

Well, you may be able to avoid this formatting and resizing of partitions. Your current partition sizes would work fine for many computer users, allowing them to have Windows and other programs on C and all of their data/music/photos/etc. on D. But, many users don't need to install a program that consumes 8GB.

Keep in mind you can install programs on D. To move a program currently installed on C to D, you should uninstall it and then reinstall it on D. During the installation, be sure to change to path to D when the installation procedure stops and shows where it's going to install the program; that's where you can change the path and install the program in a different location.

So, you could move the CAD program over to D, or you could select other programs to move and leave the CAD program on C. Also, if you My Documents folder is on C, as it is by default, and you have a lot of files in it, you can move it to D.

If you feel you still want/need to format and re-partition, state so and someone will assist you. But, you're on the right track. You have the huge external hard drive for backup. You would need to install Windows from scratch, using your Windows CD.

I suggest you make a list of everything you can think of that you'd like to save and restore after a formatting and fresh installation of Windows. For example, if you want to save you Favorites/Bookmarks from your browser, export them to a file and include that file in your backup. Do you want to backup email messages? It's easy to overlook something if you don't make a comprehensive checklist.

Before you start a format and reinstall of Windows, you should also try to save all device drivers you'll need, to that external hard drive. However, you can often get the drivers after the hard drive formatting and reinstall of Windows.thx soybean.

there is some freeware programs that help partition your system without needing to delte anything. i am in the process of backing up my D: drive because of the valuable stuff i have on it.
However, i didnt do ALOT of reading on it, and i ll apply this program and experiment with it. if it works then its fine and if not then i ll see what i ll do.

Next I would check with the person that repaired your system to see if they RESTRICTED your access rights to change the home page on your system.

Solve : GOM Media Player 2.1.6.3499?

Answer» http://www.download.com/GOM-Media-Player/3000-2139_4-10701768.html?tag=nl.e415

GOM Player is a free multimedia player with popular video and audio codecs built-in. GOM Player supports file formats such as AVI, DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF. Users don't have to install codecs separately. GOM Player is capable of playing incomplete or damaged AVI files by skipping the damaged frames. It can also PLAY LOCKED or partially downloaded files. Its other features include drag-and-drop support, HTTP streaming, editable skins, subtitling, overlay mixer, key remapping, enhanced filter rendering, real-time index rebuilding for AVI files and unicode support among others.

Version 2.1.6.3499 works without the skin information file, properly plays VoxWare audio, and fixes a few more bugs.

As various media players jockey for position to become your default setting for music and video streams, GOM Media Player's support for a wide range of file formats has helped it stand out as a firm favorite.

Supported formats include DAT, MPEG, DivX, XviD, WMV, ASF, AVI, and MOV, as are common codecs like FLV1, AC3, OGG, MP4, and H263. A pop-out PLAYLIST can save and organize your various media files, though the limited sort modes--two--hardly makes it a champ.

More impressive are the customizable settings on the control panel. Here you can adjust a video's image brightness, hue, and saturation. There's no preview window, and changes occur as the video runs, so unless you care for a rousing session of trial and error, be sure to tweak the settings after clicking "play." There's also a built-in screen-capture feature that includes zooming and panning, customizable themes, HOT keys, and a host of preset and adjustable audio controls.

GOM is weakest when you're looking for help documentation and trying to tweak Save settings, but overall it's a very strong player worth at least a supporting role in your video-watching habits, if not the lead. thank you broni.
i ve read about this player before. but for some reason i skipped downloading it. will download it now.
