Solve : internet explorer 7 help?

Answer»

I am a Realtor and use our local MLS program. They recently UPGRADED it to include a "refresh" button. Before the upgrade, after a certain period of time without use, it would automatically log you out. Now it will automatically refresh your session or you can manually refresh. Unfortunately, as soon as my page refreshes, I receive a pop-up from internet explorer that says "you have used an INVALID code to refresh". This pop-up occurs every few seconds making it impossible to use the SYSTEM. I have spoken with the local board as well as the company who designed the system and they can't figure out what the problem is. They have also said I'm the only member of the board that has reported this problem. Everyone seems to think it's a setting on my computer of some sort. Being very unsavvy in the computer department, I have no idea where to begin solving this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.Since it is stating "you have used an invalid code to refresh" my guess is the problem is in their software itself...
However two things you can try:
1) Make sure allow cookies is enabled in IE7 ...
2) DLoad and install FireFox and see if it works in there.

FireFox

You MAY get to like FireFox...

Solve : BgInfo?

Answer» http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/bginfo.mspx

Quote
How many TIMES have you walked up to a system in your office and needed to click through several diagnostic windows to remind yourself of important aspects of its configuration, such as its name, IP address, or operating system version If you manage multiple computers you probably need BGInfo. It automatically displays relevant information about a Windows computer on the desktop's background, such as the computer name, IP address, service pack version, and more. You can edit any field as well as the font and background colors, and can place it in your startup folder so that it runs every boot, or even configure it to display as the background for the logon screen.

Because BGInfo simply writes a NEW desktop bitmap and exits you don't have to worry about it consuming system resources or interfering with other applications.

BGInfo works on 95 and higher, and Windows NT 4.0 and higher.
There are quite a few useful SysInternals programs out there (and Microsoft Windows Powertools) that are very handy to have.
Thanks for linking to them, Broni. Many of the utilities run standalone, therefor, making them portable. Extremely useful for system administrators, and students who get put in charge of fixing their school computers Yeah...I use bunch of them.

The main site is here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/default.mspx

or, if you want them without all Micro$oft EULA crap, you can get same programs from before Sysinternals were taken over by M$, from here:
http://court.shrock.org/sysinternals/thnx broni your the best.
cherz!I have the last zipped version of the Sysinternals utilities before they got gobbled up by the Mothership if needed.

This one is a new addition i'll certainly take it around the block for a spin...It would be my dream to require every new poster to attach a screenshot like this, so we wouldn't have to ask same questions again, and again:
- What windows version?
- What browser? Version?
- How much RAM?
etc., etc., etc.

I guess, it'll remain as my dream...oh well...I put bginfo on all the computers I set up here at work. It's a great tool. I've also been using process explorer instead of task manager. It's a lot more in depth.

MAYBE we could make some sort of script that would run when the user hits Post, to grab system specs. I don't know, like a java program or something..... I've seen other websites do stuff like that, but not forums.

We used to have a button that would get users started off by a similar statement as this:

"I am using and "

The only thing is that, well, its kind of pointless for two reasons:
1) We dont get much from knowing the OS and Browser, unless its in the Internet Browser issues area.
2) Half the users didnt use it in the first place.

As for a javascript:
Javascript is limited to the information it can/will collect. Many browsers are very restrictive about the information they send out.

Java application:
Many new users might not have Java Platform on their computer. Not to mention, Java's initial load time for internet web applications can be very slow.
I don't think it would be that difficult to implement something like that..... Just throw an if statement in somewhere saying that if the browser doesn't have java installed, then run something else.

Or maybe another option is to have a flashing popup on the side of the page that says "Don't forget your specs!"
I honestly think that what you are describing would be too much to ask for.
Actually, a button saying "Help me make a new post" bringing you to a CGI page that puts information directly into a new topic field would be much better. (Using Dropdowns to select an OS, etc) hey, I like that idea.....

Solve : Display Hidden Devices in Vista’s Device Manager?

Answer»

Thanks to:
http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/windows/2007/11/05/display-hidden-devices-in-vistas-device-manager

Device Manager displays information about the hardware devices installed on your computer. When it COMES to troubleshooting, it can be an invaluable tool. However, you may not have noticed that Device Manager does not actually list all the hardware.

Two TYPES of devices are hidden in Device Manager: non-plug and play devices and ghosted devices (nonpresent). You can easily force Device Manager to display non-plug and play devices. Click the Start menu, click Control PANEL, click System and Maintenance and click Device Manager. Select Show Hidden Devices from the View menu.

Forcing Device Manager to show Hidden Devices:
Click the Advanced system settings link. Click the Environment Variables button. Under System Variables, click the New button. Type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices for the Variable Name. Under Variable Value, type “1″ and click OK. Now open Device Manager again and from the View menu, click Show Hidden Devices. In defense of Vista:
Windows XP does the same thing.

Solve : Help!!! I literally have bugs in my laptop?

Answer»

I bought a laptop online, and a few days ago saw a baby ROACH crawl ONTO the screen. Have seena few more afterwards now. What do I do? Have been keeping it in a garbage BAG when not in use but probably have to fumigate whole ROOM now? Have maybe seen 5 total.Yikes! Well I'll speak for probably everyone on the forums, but this type of issue is not something that commonly happens, especially with a laptop (have dealt with issues like this on desktops).

What I do or RECOMMEND for users with a desktop computer is to open the case and clean it out, which is what you'll have to end up getting someone to do for you. While fumigating the computer and house will help kill the bugs. If there happens to be bugs in the laptops that end up getting killed having them in the laptop could be potentially bad for the internal parts of the laptop.

I'd suggest taking the computer to a local computer shop that can repair laptops and having them open the laptop and clean it out for you. Thanks so much. Will do asap.

You're pulling my plonker, right?
That option seems to be disabled while using the "SMF Default", "Babylon", and "WikiStyle" themes. (It should be right under the "Don't show users' signatures." option.) It looks like you can only change it if you are using the "Forum or Board Default" THEME.

I tried turning off the filter in the "Forum or Board Default" theme and then changing to the "SMF Default" theme but it did not work.Quote from: contrex on November 03, 2007, 08:31:03 AM

Solve : 5 cds to 1 dvd?

Answer»

Hello. I am looking for a way to merge 5 cds to 1 dvd. there is plenty of room on a 4.7gb dvd to do so. Is there a program or something I can use to move all the information to 1 dvd without losing any information and installing the program intact. Thank you. So,what are you attempting to do a 5 restore disk set
on 1 DVD ?What sort of media are you dealing with? (eg: Music, programs, VIDEOS)
What is your main goal? (eg: To back up files) I have a 5 disk set of hallmark card studio and want to put it on 1 dvd disk. I am sure that you as well as I would rather deal with 1 disk instead of 5You will find that with many programs, they have "lock" protection, preventing you from copying all of the disks to one DVD. Just exactly how many times are you planning to install this copyrighted software, and on how many machines? Most folks install a software app like this only once, and the time spent FIDDLING with disks is small compared with the length of time they will be using the software. You might be able to make an ISO of each CD, burn all 5 to a DVD-ROM and use it for backup purposes, but that might not work for example if Hallmark has physically pressed anti-copy stuff on the (pressed, not burned) distribution disks.
With one dvd you have less of a chance of damaging 1 disk then you do 5.Quote from: sndg311 on November 04, 2007, 04:01:35 AM

OK I agree but:-

Damage 1 DVD = ruined software package
Damage 1 of 5 CDs = ruined software package

Well, it's worth a try, the worst that can happen is that you'd be out 1 DVD blank. I think the PROBLEM may come if the installer says "Now insert disk 2" (or whatever) and then checks the volume ID of the currently loaded optical disk, which, obviously, will not have changed, and therefore hang at that point. It may not happen, it may just look for the files it needs without doing any disk checking - I guess there is only one way to find out.

What Internet Browser are you using (eg: Internet Explorer)
What type of Internet connection do you have (eg: DSL)
What did you do to need to USE System Recovery?
What type of recovery did you do? (Did it require a disk? Did it redo everything? Did it just fix ONE thing?)
Where there any errors?

TRY the FOLLOWING:

Click Start> Run
type CMD
press ENTER
now, a black box should appear on your screen. Type the following:

ipconfig /release

(press ENTER and wait)

then type:

ipconfig /renew

(press ENTER and wait)

What does that do?

no operation can be performed on local area connection while it has its media disconnected. Then it says the same thing again with an error occurred while renewing interface wireless connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. request has timed outgot some bad viruses and took it to geek squad. they did it with my disk. I have cabel internet.
It sounds like your WiFi card is currently turned off, or you are no longer connected to your network.

Make sure that your WiFi device is on (usually, a keyboard command controls this)
If its directly connected in, make sure the cord is plugged in to your computer properly.

Windows XP should have a Wireless icon in the bottom left hand corner of your screen. Find it, and make sure your network is connected

The error you received back from running the ipconfig tools is usually the result of not being connected

Solve : Inaccessible Website?

Answer»

I have a curious problem that none of my tech-savvy FRIENDS can solve (and I'm most definitely NOT tech-savvy). I find that I suddenly cannot access walmart.com on either my lapop or regular computer (both HP units with Windows XP). The site is not down and it is not being targeted by my pop-up blocker or being branded a banned site. And yet everytime I tried to go to this ONE site, I get the message, "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage."

Any suggestions?WELCOME aboard

Will Firefox?I downloaded Firefox and got the same result when I tried to log onto walmart.com. If it helps, the only thing that my computer and laptop have in COMMON (other than manufacturer) is the same Linksys wireless router (and, until the past few weeks, it had never rejected any WEBSITES).

Solve : Hmmm, Can this work??

Answer»

ok, so I lost a HD last night. It's fried. /cry So I dig through the stack of old computers and find this old dell. had a fried mobo. So I took the little 40g HD out of it and low and behold it worked. I plugged it in the Newer Machine (P5GDC Deluxe Mobo P4 3.2 2g Ram.) and I got the thing to boot. Logged in and after 10 minutes on the phone with Microsoft they let me re-use the dell Serial and transferred for me. Now is the point where I am dumbfounded. I now have a machine with a pre-existing OS but seeing as how it was a dell it had nothing but the basic set of drivers on it. So I can't get anything to work correctly. I have no ethernet (which is onboard) I have no access to gfx card, the cd rom won't show up under my computer (as far as I can tell the device MANAGER still shows it as an Unknown device-although it shows in the BIOS as a bootable device). And the 3.5 FLOPPY doesn't seem work either. (Not that I have any DISKS that aren't 10 years old) So I guess the question is can I make this work? I don't have the original Windows disc and I doubt that it would have anything USABLE on it otherwise. So should I just junk the HD get a new one and reinstall a brand new copy of windows? Or is there a way to salvage an otherwise legit OS on the working machine? Been up all night just trying to get the thing to accept incoming or OUTGOING data. And while it can see computers listed on the network it refuses to connect to any of them. Any advice would be better than stressing myself out over what appears to have an easy no-brainer solution. Thanks in advance. Try re-installing your MBoard drivers for the newer machine...Windows should have nothing to do with this part.
I'm very suprised they re-issued liscensing from an OEM product. They have never done this in the past to my knowledge...

Solve : What is your experience with Vista??

Answer»

What prompted my question was reading some post on this board from people, who were unhappy with Vista.

How about myself, first.

I've been running Vista for about month ,and a half. Bought brand NEW.
This is my config.:
Desktop - Compaq Presario SR5152NX
2.1 GHz Dual Core AMD
2GB RAM
250GB HD (230GB in reality)
512 MB ATI video card
19" LCD

I've been running this machine rather heavily.
Except for some nights, it's on 24/7.
Lot of programs. Many installs/uninstalls.
Initially, it took me about a week to bring it up to my liking. I changed several options, settings, i.e User Account Control, Windows firewall, running services, running startups, uninstall some HP crap, which came with my computer, etc. etc.
Then I had it set.

After all those changes, when it became MY computer, I've been really happy with Vista.
In all those 6 weeks, I just used System Restore once, and only because of some ill download.
Other then that, I didn't have any single, serious problem.

Please, let me know about your Vista experience.
Thank you.

I have had no real major problems with Vista, and I absolutely love it!
The one problem I had was caused for some unknown reason, however, Windows Vista Repair tool fixed it by itself with no problems.

Its not too much of a resource hog at all, and all is going well, and believe me, I install and remove a LOT of stuff as well.
Nothing has really gone wrong.

I am glad to see many improvements coming in through Windows update, as compared to just security. Actually, recently, updates haven't asked me to restart, its mainly been Windows Defender definition updates...

Things work well for me For how long have you had it?

I got rid of Windows Defender. It was too annoying to me.I'm glad this topic has started because I've been seriously considering upgrading to Vista on my computer... From what I've been reading, the "resource hog" tag came from the fact that Vista treats the RAM like Cache memory.
I have been tinkering since it still had the Longhorn tag. Shortly after was a tester for the Mothership all the way up to RC2. Won a FULL copy at a Tech Partner conference (fix).

I would say that the only complaint i have for the end user is they actually made it more difficult to customise to each user's needs instead of simpler.
I don't buy in to most of the horror stories and bashing...happens with every new OS they release and always will.
And since most driver issues have been resolved it has settled in nicely. SP1 will be a welcome addition as well.

But it still has not earned the right to be my main platform...Win2K still owns that.Quote from: GX44 on November 02, 2007, 07:59:53 AM

I'm glad this topic has started because I've been seriously considering upgrading to Vista on my computer...
I have Vista on a Notebook PC I bought about 3 months ago; I do like the eye candy it gives me. My main computer, a desktop PC, runs Win XP Pro SP2.

Here's my perspective on the notion of upgrading. Unless you have a specific reason to upgrade your OS, and I don't think many computers have a good reason yet, then I would wait until you buy a new system that comes with Vista. Granted, for some people, just wanting to have the latest OS, may be a compelling reason. But, most users simply have no real need to upgrade to Vista at this point in time.THE PROQuote from: tommy gusack on November 02, 2007, 10:21:07 AM
THE PRO
Your posts, I am sure, all end up going together, forming the word:
Pointless

Anyways
Yes, agreed. Its not necessary to upgrade unless you need to. For many users, it would be beneficial, for example, being able to use a normal talking voice, and type a letter with my voice, is a very useful feature of Vista Home Premium. (And, it works, and is included with Premium, requiring no extra software, with no training needed)

I happen to think that a cleaner looking desktop makes the workplace/me more productive. Vista seems to allow this. Its easier to look at, and being that it is, its easier to deal with.

The annoying features of Windows Defender can usually be disabled. Seeing how Avast detects most adware and spyware, I could probably disable it. Windows Defender should be removed...and never re-installed.Quote from: patio on November 02, 2007, 05:28:28 PM
Windows Defender should be removed...and never re-installed.
Could you please provide:
1) reasons for why
2) an alternative and free program
Reason one would be that it scored one of the lowest on threat detection tests in the low 70's i believe ( I'll dig up the article )
Reason two It seemed as though it wanted to bang heads with other protection apps such as NOD and Ewido.
After seeing that review i just turned it off and never looked back. Have had no issues on the Vista box since.Quote

I totally agree.
First, i don't like upgrades.
Secondly, being little bit more, then average user, I spend a great deal of time to set up my new computer to my liking, and I really hate to do it again...LOL
Even now, I still have my 8 years old Win 2K, next to my desk, fully, and nicely functioning. Still networked with my new Vista.Interesting (negative, though) article at PC Pitstop:
http://pcpitstop.com/news/vista6months.asp

Quote
Vista: The First 6 Months

It was six months ago that we were anxiously awaiting the introduction of Microsoft's new operating system, Vista. My love of COMPUTING started when XP was introduced so Vista's introduction carried me back to the excitement of those days. If only it could have been the same.

My disappointment with Vista wasn't immediate, but with each problem and irritation the overall experience became a negative one. I'm not alone in this feeling. It seems everyone is mostly disappointed with Vista.

Lets look as some figures and see if Vista is really the disappointment we're hearing about.

Sales of the Vista stand-alone unit are only 60% of what the sales of XP were in its first six months. That's not conjecture it's fact. That drop is reflected in individual units and in a corresponding drop in revenue.

However, a full 80% of Vista sales come from copies installed on new machines at the factory level. Since new computer sales are almost double what they were during XP's introduction, 128 million yearly then compared to 239 million yearly now, Vista shows an increase in units sold at this level. But does does this reflect an increase in computer sales or an increase because Vista sales? Vista's increased hardware requirements might be inspiring some new computer purchases, but computer sales are up in general without Vista's help.

Another interesting fact and one that seems to cement the poor acceptance of Vista is the great reception of Microsoft Office 2007. It's sales were double the 6 months sales of Office 2003 and 60% higher than Office 2003's current sales figures. Office 2007, released the same day as Vista, is a hit. Vista is not.

So what is causing this flop of an introduction?

1. Tough Hardware Requirements: The first thing we heard about Vista was "Check your hardware". Without upgrading most users would experience Vista computing at a crawl. A decent processor and plenty of memory are mandatory to having a good experience with Vista. Did I mention memory? Money decisions involved in a computer purchase, not to mention the loss of info and data by the inexperienced, are enough to slow the change to Vista. Couple this with the continued discovery of networking problems:

Microsoft has confirmed that Windows Vista is the cause and that the problem resides in the use of an outdated router. "An outdated network router may not function correctly when you use it together with new networking features in Windows Vista," informed Microsoft. In some cases, the network router will stop functioning completely and require a reset.

2. Lack of proper drivers: While the development of drivers is the responsibility of the device manufacturer it doesn't much matter whose fault it is that they are not available or faulty. Before Vista was formally introduced I was using a copy of Vista RC1 from Microsoft.I had a problem then, installing drivers for Nvidia video cards and motherboards, and darned if I didn't run into the same thing just this week. We're more than six months down the road and yet I still can't use Vista on my preferred hardware. It's not like Nvidia is a small player in the graphics card market. Besides there has to be a reason for Nvidia dragging their feet. It would be nice to know whose fault it is but the problem isn't solved with placing blame. I can't use the OS regardless. It won't work on my hardware. Case closed.

3. Application compatibility issues: Anyone heard of QuickBooks? If you're using QuickBooks 2007 you're in luck. If not plan on spending the money for the new version. The 2006 and earlier versions won't work. According to QuickBooks Product Manager George Jacquette,Vista file management makes it to hard to rewrite earlier versions of QuickBooks. No problem? Right, just add another $200.00 for QuickBooks Pro to your total for the new machine or the New Vista Boxed version.

4. User Account Controls: For any product to be successful on a grand scale it must fill a need and be easy for the masses to use. Since it's beginning we've heard about increased security with Vista People have been screaming about Windows virus and spyware activity forever. Microsoft's answer, User Account Controls. While it may supply more security it just isn't easy for the "average" user to contend with or configure. You be the judge. Think of your five closest neighbors and imagine them configuring Vista UAC using this document from Microsoft as a guide. It's not going to happen. Most of the people reading this will be somewhat computer SAVVY. I wonder how many of us have actually configured the UAC and how many have just removed it. I removed it.

So there you have it. There are other signs that the launch is going slower than expected. Microsoft has extended availability of XP until June of 2008. Business is, as usual, awaiting the first update or service pack. Is this unusual? Will Microsoft pull the plug on Vista? Naw, it's been the same with each introduction of Windows since Windows 95. Some were accepted faster than expected and some slower. The interesting articles will be written at the one-year mark. See you then.

Solve : Help, please? I can't find the "any" key?

Answer»

I was doing a reinstall today back to factory settings on my Dell computer when it asked me to insert my driver disk and then press "any" key. I looked all over my keyboard and couldn't find the "any" key at all.

Maybe it's labeled differently. Can someone please HELP?Perhaps you should prevent thy SELF from TOYING?
Perhaps it says "Press any key" not "press THE any key"
Perhaps, since MANY BIOS companies are updating their interface, it really says "Press ENTER to continue"

Solve : 21 Facts About The Internet You Should Know?

Answer» http://www.bizwaremagic.com/quick_internet_history.htm

21 Facts About The Internet You Should KNOW

You probably use it every day but how well do you
know your Internet?

Ever wonder how all this foolishness got started in the
first place and why? How big it REALLY is? How many present
users there are? The average time spent on a website?
Here are 21 facts you might or might not want to know
about the Internet.

1. Who coined the phrase "World Wide Web"?

Tim Berners-Lee in 1990. He's also considered by most
people as the person who started the whole thing rolling.

2. How did the Internet Start and Why?

Many believe it all started with the time-sharing of IBM computers in
the early 60's at universities such as Dartmouth, Berkeley and others
in the States. People would share the same computer for their computing tasks.
The Internet also received help from Sputnik! After this Russian Satellite
was launched in 1957, President Eisenhower formed ARPA to advance
computer networking and communication.

Plus, we won't even mention that whole industry where
people show their naughty bits.

3. Who was J.C.R. Licklider?

Licklider is often referred to as the father of the Internet because
his ideas of interactive computing and a "Galactic Network" were
the seeds for the Internet. His ideas would be developed thru
DARPA,(Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) in 1962.
Later he would help form ARPANET and the Internet was on its way.

Vinton Gray Cerf was another founding father of the Internet. He
played a key role in the creation of the Net by developing
the TCP/IP protocols we use for the Internet.

4. What was ARPANET?

ARPANET stands for 'Advanced Research Projects Agency Network'
Came about in the arena of Sputnik and the cold war. The military
needed a method of communicating and sharing all the information on
computers for research and development. It would also be a handy
communication system if all traditional ways were wiped out in
a nuclear attack.

5. What was the First long distance Connection?

In 1965 using a low speed dial-up telephone line, MIT
researcher Lawrence G. ROBERTS working with Thomas Merrill,
connected the TX-2 computer in Massachusetts to the Q-32
in California. The phone lines weren't quite up to the task.

6. Who was Leonard Kleinrock?

Kleinrock came up with the theory of packet switching,
the basic form of Internet connections. With a group
of UCLA graduate students on Oct. 29, 1969, Kleinrock
connected with the Stanford Research Institute; but as
they typed in the G in LOGIN, the system crashed!

7. What is an Ethernet?

It's a protocol or system for a set of computer networking
technologies for local area networks (LANs), the origins
of which came from Bob Metcalfe's Harvard's dissertation
on "Packet Networks".

8. When was the first mouse introduced?

The first computer mouse was introduced in 1968 by
Douglas Engelbart at the Fall Joint Computer Expo
in San Francisco.

9. Did Al Gore really invent the Internet?

No, but give credit where credit is due. He did the most of
any elected official to ACTIVELY promote the Internet. However,
he wasn't even in Congress when ARPANET was formed in 1969
or even when the term 'Internet' came into use in 1974. Gore was
first elected in 1976.

Gore himself may be the cause of this Urban Legend or
Internet myth - during a Wolf Blitzer CNN interview on
March 9, 1999 - Al Gore did say: "During my service in the
United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating
the Internet."

Causing himself some ridicule but also paving the way for
such future one-liners as: "I invented the environment!"

10. Who coined the phrase "information superhighway"?

Wikipedia says Nam June Paik coined the phrase "information
superhighway" in 1974.

Al Gore popularized the phrase in the early 1990's.

11. Which decade really saw the explosion of the net?

The 90's. The Internet exploded into the mainstream with the
release of the first popular web browser Mosaic in 1993.

12. How fast is the Internet growing?

Very fast. It took 38 years for radio to reach 50 million users,
13 years for TV, and only 5 years for the Internet. Source:
CyberAtlas.com

13. Number of Internet Users and Breakdown.

The Internet is roughly 35% English, 65% non-English with
the Chinese at 14%. Yet only 13% of world's population,
812 million are Internet users as of Dec. '04. North America
has the highest continental concentration with 70% of the
people using the Internet.

14. Country with the highest percentage of net users?

Sweden at 75%.

15. How big is the Internet's surfing world?

Google's index now stands at 8 billion pages. Roughly 812 million
surfers and growing. Using email (67%) and doing reseach (45%) are the main
activities, followed by getting info about products/services (41%),
and checking news, weather, ETC. (40%) Source: Harrisinteractive.com

16. What was the Net's first index called?

Archie; other than library catalogs, this was the first
index created in 1989 by Peter Deutsch at McGill in Montreal.
Although it spouted such others as Veronica and Jughead, Archie
was short for Archiver and had nothing to do with the
comic strip.

Backrub was the original name for Google. Larry Page and Sergey
Brin used this term for their search engine in 1996, Google as we
know it debuted in 1998. The name Google is a twist on the word
Googol, a number represented as 1 followed by 100 zeros.

17. Who coined the phrase "The Web might be better than sex"?

Bob Metcalfe in 1995.

18. What does HTTP stand for?

HyperText Transfer Protocol - it's the protocol used to transfer
content across the net; it requires two client programs, the HTTP client
and the server.

19. What is an ISP?

Internet Service Provider - This is the service or company you use to
access the Internet.

20. What is HTML?

Hypertext Markup Language - it's the coded format language for
transmitting and creating hypertext web pages.

21. What are your average surfing habits according to Nielsen
NetRatings?

Each month you usually visit 59 domains, view 1,050 pages allocating 45
seconds for each page and spend about 25 hours doing all this net activity.
Each surfing session lasts 51 minutes.

One last thought - Henry Edward Hardy in his Master's Thesis (1993) on
The History of the Net stated "The Net is Immortal". Ever wonder what
this baby will be like in a 100 years? A 1000 years? Just something
to think about as you keep your eye on that cursor.

Solve : Make A Dreamy Vista Screensaver?

Answer»

Thanks to:
http://www.lockergnome.com/nexus/windows/2007/10/31/make-a-dreamy-vista-screensaver

DreamScene on Vista allows you to run a video as a wallpaper. Unfortunately, I can’t use it. Vista CLAIMS my monitors are too big. That’s okay, I’m not giving them up. I did, however, discover a very cool trick a while back to run a screensaver behind my ACTIVE windows.

First you’ll need to open a command prompt. To do this:

* Click on Start, then Run
* Type cmd and click the Enter key on your keyboard.

Once the command window is open, you’ll need to type in the name of the screensaver you want, followed by p65552. For example, if you want the Ribbons screensaver running behind your windows, you would type the following in the command window:

ribbons.scr /p65552

Be SURE to note the space between .scr and the /p65552.

Voila! Isn’t this cool? You can now SEE the ribbons running behind all of my active windows, instead of just a blank DESKTOP.

Solve : Google is unreadable?

Answer»

For some unknown reason, I started to load Japanese characters on Google. I then thought better of it and cancelled the load before it was even 1/4 done. Now, however, whenever I go to Google from anywhere, it shows small boxes where the LETTERS would normally be and it ALSO says I am on "iGoogle" which I have never used. How do I change this to get back to normal Google and normal English lettering? Thanks. It SEEMS that you have accidently changed your language.

Make sure your browser says:
www.google.com for US
www.google.uk for United Kingdom
www.google.ca for Canada

At the top of iGoogle, click the link at the very top, second link in from the LEFT. Hi Zylstra -- Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, it didn't work, because every Google page has either Japanese characters or little boxes. I did click on the 2ND link from the top left, but it only brought me to a page that was even more Japanese and boxes in iGoogle.Try clicking this link:
http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en
Hi Zylstra -- That seemed to work - everything came up in English, but I am not interested in "iGoogle" and it seems to have trapped me there, even when I just enter the web address for www.google.com. I appreciate your help. Now any way I can get out of igoogle and into regular google in English?Hi Zylstra -- Thanks again. I decided to just go with this "iGoogle" thing as long as it works. Thanks for your help.Click here:
http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en

And in "Interface Language" select "English"
This should correct the issueIn either Google versions, can you see anything (like two radio buttons) in the area marked red in the picture below?

Problem solved. I've got both Google and iGoogle in English. Thanks for the help.

Solve : copying registry?

Answer» I KNOW that the registry can be backed up on tape, but I have a solo computer. I'd like to see if a downloaded registry cleaner, Uniblue Registry Booster, helps clean up some of the "DETRITUS" on my computer, but first, I'd like a copy of my registry the way it is, so that I can overwrite the changes if the "cleaning" causes problems. How do I back up the registry onto a CD or flash drive? Or isn't that a good move?
I have "RESTORE", but I don't know what to do if the "cleaning" causes this to malfunction.
Thanks to anyone who can advise!
goldie917
I hope some mod will move it to the appropriate forum, but anyway...

I don't know what Windows version you're using, but if XP, go Start>Run, type in:
REGEDIT
HIT Enter.
Registry Editor will open.
Go File>Export, and save a copy of your registry wherever you wish.Bravo! You found the color that many people will struggle to read.

Uniblue Registry Cleaner gives you an option to backup the registry when you clean up the registry.

However, sometimes this can be unreliable, so it is best to follow Broni's instructions.Erunt from http://www.snapfiles.com/get/erunt.html

Solve : games development?

Hey people, just wondering if anyone knows the root file structure of an engine like that used in doom3, which i have already contacted idSoftware about. I started a team about 4 months ago, here(where i am) in AUSTRALIA, we now have 6 people including myself. We really wanted to make an fps similar to that of doom 3 or quake4, and we're well on our way. there are major problems though, and we did NEED some information about the engine used in doom3 FROM idSoftware and soon found out that getting in contact with them is DIFFICULT, and i still have no reply. Basic info about the game can be obtained by emailing me (i'm sure my addy is here somewhere ), but we still need some advice concerning basic storyline ideas (easy enough) and engine data, file structure, gui's, and models Hopefully someone will be kind enough as to help.
Thanx dudes

ALSO!!!!!
If anyone with any experience with games development WANTS to be a part of this team, i'm DEFINITELY open to enquiries.

REVISED* I am getting help from a member as we speak, emails....

this suc_ks!!! oh well another try tomorrow ...........(Sunday)

RMA'd It has got to be a dead- PCI-E #(1) slot......... tried 2 working monitors & Nvidia graphic cards oh well ......... Is this the same board the standoffs got mashed on ? ?

If so I'm thinking you might want to use fibre washers on both sides of each post on the MBoard and tighten it down with about 10% of the torque you used the first time...

Whose PSU did you buy for this and are you running a PCi/e vid card ? ?

As to the power ISSUE you might try REVERSING the header 1 connectors as the polarity may be backwards.

Keep in mind also the driver setup for this board even though it's a nice one is not up to PAR...i had to re-install both the NIC and onboard sound drivers 3 times each before i got any joy joy...

You would think that for this nice of a board they would have at least gotten that part right.

LET me know.

p.s. When i contacted MSI about the driver issue to let them know how miffed i was they must have been aware of the issue as they offered a full refund without putting up too much of a stink.Quote from: patio on April 29, 2007, 08:40:24 AM

Solve : Website registration process.?

Answer»

Hi Everybody!!

Suppose, I have to create my own WEBSITE, I can create web page normally by HTML,DHTML,JAVA SCRIPT.

WHAT IS THE NEXT COMPLETE PROCESS TO REGISTER MY WEBSITE WHERE WILL I HAVE TO GET SPACE,DOMAIN etc.

suppose, I have two, three websites data, can i keep it in one computer and will be able to edit periodically?

Thanks,
JayYou will need to check into hosting companies...they sell their service for a fee.

And yes you can save your pages and edit them as you like. They are normally uploaded to your host co.'s servers using FTP.

Good Luck to you.Go to 110mb. Excellent free hosting! Quote from: Raptor on APRIL 29, 2007, 06:10:38 AM

Go to 110mb. Excellent free hosting!
Seconded.
But if you want www.yoursite.com rather than yoursite.110mb.com you will have to pay.If you want your own domain name so that you can publish a site like [www.mysite.com], you'll have to register it. I recommend GoDaddy.com for a Registrar. They also have web hosting (not free) but you do not need to host with them just because you registered your domain name with them.

If you do not register a domain name, you're not going to be able to publish a site like [www.mysite.com]. You could still publish website but it will have to be attached to another URL. For example, my ISP is Earthlink. I'm entitled to some disk space on their server for a personal website. The URL for that would be something like http://home.earthlink.net/~username/ or the example in the previous post for 110mb hosting.

I'm not a fan of the free hosting idea. Let's face it, these hosting services must get some revenue somewhere if they are going to survive. So, if you're providing a service for free, where's the revenue coming from? 110mb even says on their site that many of these free hosting services don't survive more than a few months. Yet, for reasons not clear to me, they claim to be different.

Good, reliable, commerical hosting can be obtained for as LITTLE as about $4/mo. One I'm using is www.totalchoicehosting.com. Their Starter plan is $4/mo.

Ok, Thanks to all of you! Idea with link for free and payable thanks.

So, first process will be getting domain name registration.
Suppose, we are getting domain name, what will have to do next ? will i have all data/page created by me to him to publish or what else?

Thanks,
Jay

I'm not sure who you mean my "him". Apparently, you either mean the Registrar or the hosting service. Please clarify that.

Anyway, here's one scenario:
You register your domain with a registrar. Let's assume you do not use them for hosting. They will "park" your domain until you have obtained an account with a hosting service and have published, i.e. uploaded, your pages to the server.

You open an account with a hosting service. They will issue a "DNS pointer" code to you. You will need to logon to the account you created with the Registrar and associate or link that DNS pointer to your domain name.

You publish your web pages to the host server. This is usually done via FTP, using SOFTWARE designed to connect to a server for FTP uploading. Think of it this way. You view websites with software called a web browser, and you're working in the HTTP arena; all website addresses are pre-fixed with http. Similarly, to upload or download directly from your computer to a web host server, you are working in the FTP arena and so you need software designed to work in the arena. FTP software can be PURCHASED, or you might try freeware such as CoffeeCup Free FTP 3.0; if you're going to buy, here's an option: http://www.smartftp.com/

Working with your web page FILES in the FTP software is similar to working with files using Windows Explorer, except that, with FTP, you moving files to a remote computer instead of a different location on your hard drive. Thanks Soybean,
Everything is clear! Excellent!!

Thanks n Regards,
Jay

Solve : your opinion of this ummm "laptop" ??

Answer» Micro-mini laptop with giant features
Vulcan's FlipStart combines great usability with super portability

Krakow: Mini-laptop is a winner
By Gary Krakow
Columnist
Updated: 9:12 p.m. ET May 1, 2007

I must confess: I love small, portable computers, and the smaller the better. I love testing them, I love using them. And I especially love carrying them around — instead of lugging a full-sized laptop.

That’s why I’ve been so interested in a brand new mini-portable design from the people at a company called Vulcan Portals Inc — owned by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

The FlipStart is Vulcan's first product. It’s a mini-laptop which was a long time in the making. After using this computer for a week or so, I can honestly say that it was well worth the wait.

FlipStart is a very, very small laptop computer. Its closest competition, the OQO, is a very, very small tablet computer. That means you can hold FlipStart in both hands to type or put it on a table and use it like a full-sized laptop. The OQO has a slide-open keyboard underneath its touch screen display. You can either hold it in both hands to type or keep the keyboard hidden and use the stylus to navigate.

Both the FlipStart and the new OQO (model 02) come with USB, and Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi and Bluetooth circuitry built in. FlipStart comes with a port replicator for Ethernet, additional USB ports and more. OQO sells an optional docking station with extra ports and your choice of a dual-layer DVD±RW ($299) or CD±RW/DVD-ROM ($399) drive.

FlipStart comes standard with Sprint’s high-speed, wireless, Mobile Broadband (EV-DO) connectivity, which means an extra monthly service charge. OQO gives you the option of ADDING either Sprint or Verizon’s EV-DO modems. For the record, neither Sprint or Verizon’s system work outside the U.S.

FlipStart comes in only one configuration with a 1.1 GHz Intel Pentium M Ultra Low Voltage processor, an Intel Enhanced graphics processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM and a 30 GB hard drive. The OQO uses VIA processors and can be configured with more memory and/or hard drive space. Both devices run your choice of Windows XP or Windows Vista.

The actual FlipStart unit measures 5.9 by 4.5 by 1.6 inches and weighs 1.75 pounds when the “standard high-capacity” battery (3-6 hours) is attached. Shave a quarter inch and a quarter pound off the DIMENSIONS when using a “slimline” battery (1-3 hours). My test unit came with the big battery, which provided me with about 3.5 hours of power using the standard settings.

FlipStart has two screens. There’s the 5.6-inch, 1024 by 600 pixel SVGA main screen — and what they call the InfoPane screen on the outside. InfoPane is really a low-power external display that allows you to see and read incoming Microsoft Office Outlook e-mail, along with your calendar and contacts. You navigate using the jog dial on the right side of the case. If you need to respond to a message, just flip open the LID and type your reply. Of course, you'll need to have the FlipStart turned on for the InfoPane to work.

There are a number of different ways to move your cursor around and navigate FlipStart’s main screen. There’s a 4-button, 4-way navigator, laptop-like touch pad, and a round, ThinkPad-like touch-stick along with the ubiquitous left and right mouse buttons. Whew!

I would also like to congratulate the FlipStart designers on their decision to add a Control-Alt-Delete button. That’s right, one button that allows you to do the work of THREE to alert your computer that you need to engage the famous Windows “three-finger salute."

There are two ways to type on the FlipStart keyboard. You can hold the computer in both hands and type with your thumbs and — if your fingers are nimble enough — you can touch-type while FlipStart sits on a table. I was actually able to type both ways. Of course, you can also add a USB or Bluetooth keyboard and mouse but they’re kinda bulky to carry around with such a small computer.

Living with FlipStart
FlipStart is fun to use. It’s easy to carry, a cinch to navigate and handles tasks like a sports car handles curves. I was able to figure out how to use FlipStart without ever referring to the user’s guide. The unit’s designers deserve a round of applause for that and for everything else that worked as advertised.

In addition to handling my email and surfing needs, I must admit that the combination of FlipStart and Slingbox was addictive. Being able to control and watch my home cable TV on this terrific little computer over a wide-area wireless connection was a little slice of portable computing heaven. It’s very highly recommended.

FlipStart sells for $1,999. OQO models are cheaper. But remember, although they’re both small, portable computers, one is a tablet, the other a laptop and both sport different standard and optional features. Equipped similarly, the prices are close. I COULD be happy traveling with either one.

2# pictures of it on this link <-----------O

lipStart comes in only one configuration with a 1.1 GHz Intel Pentium M Ultra Low Voltage processor, an Intel Enhanced graphics processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM and a 30 GB hard drive. The OQO uses VIA processors and can be configured with more memory and/or hard drive space. Both devices run your choice of Windows XP or Windows Vista.

Solve : fear of the dark cd rip?

Answer»

hey everyone,

I want to rip Iron Maiden's album Fear of the DARK. But since it's an "enhanced CD", it's so enhanced that it doesn't work at all. When I put the disc in the drive, it is not readable at all, so if I open my computer, it just SHOWS " DVD-RAM DRIVE", plus if i try to open it, it says there's no disc in the drive. Here are the comp's specs:

mobo : Asus p5p800 SE
CPU : Intel P4 with HT, 3.2 Ghz stock
optical : LG DVD Drive HL-DT-ST GSA-H10A
Hard Drive : Maxtor 1200 WDC WD1200JB--00REA0
Video :ATi Radeon 9550
Audio : ONBOARD RealtekDid you try opening Windows Media Player, and just clicking the "Rip" tab to see if it would read the format?

Do you have another CD drive in your computer that you could try?

As I've said before, i can't even read the CD. And i dont have another drive.

Solve : PROBLEM W/ MONITOR DIGITAL/ANALOG SETTINGS?

Answer»

Hi,

I am not sure if anyone can help me but here is a description of my problem.

I bought a Samsung 19" LCD Monitor on Boxing Day and when I tried to set it up I had some problems similar to what I am about to describe in a second. I was able to fix it somehow but cannot remember what I did because it just seemed to work and I tried a lot of stuff. However, when I recently moved and tried setting up the COMPUTER again the same problem arose.

Basically, when I start my computer I see all the boot up info, and the MICROSOFT symbol and then when it should be at the password screen the screen goes black and the monitor flashes digital/analog on the screen and then the monitor POWER BUTTON flashes blue. I have tried all the buttons and changed the digital/analog setting to manual but this does not work. I have tried changing some things in the BIOS with no luck and also tried having Windows revert to the last working conditions and this also did not work. I can however get it to work fine in VGA mode which I can choose when I get to the safe mode option screen. When I try to adjust the resolution the screen goes to the black screen and flashes the digital/analog again. I have tried the monitor on a different computer and it works and when I tried a different monitor on my computer it does the same thing where the screen goes black. This leads me to believe it has to be my computer or its settings that are the problem.

I have a pretty crappy video card but it is good ENOUGH for my needs and I don't have the money to upgrade at this time. It is a GeForce 4 MX440 and my computer is about 5 years old but when I got it I upgraded everything so that it should last longer.

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate hearing about them.

Thanks. What resolution are you trying to set it to?
Have you tried a lower color setting?
(Like 256 colors)I think it was 256 colors.

And I was trying to make it 800x600 but once it gets changed it reverts to the black screen and the flashing digital/analog screen.Try 1024x768

Are there any driver issues with the monitor? i am having trouble locating the driver for the monitor so that i can see if that is the problem. I have the samsung 931BF monitor and the geforce 4 mx440 video card.

It is weird that the monitor only works in vga mode and goes black with any better settings. As a result i can use messenger but do nothing else on the internet.

Right click the My Computer icon
Click Properties

Make your way to the hardware tab, and click "Device Manager"

Is there anything there with a question mark, exclamation mark, or X over it/beside it?only the pci thing has a question mark but I think that is just my modem.

The monitor says it is fine. I installed the latest driver for the monitor and i am still getting the same problem. I am getting the latest one for the video card next.i just fixed the problem. it was the video card driver that was the problem.

thanks for the help!

Solve : Microsoft Linux or Mac??

Answer»

Continuing what Johnk SAID about Macs being expensive:
Their cheapest Mac laptop is $1044 LAST time I checked.
Its about the EQUIVALENT of a $600 laptop.

There are some distributions of Linux that can be installed on Apple Macintosh computers, however, this DOES NOT make purchasing a Mac worth it.

Like I said before, Windows is preloaded on most computers anyways.

You can use a boot manager like GRUB or LiLo to boot both Linux and Windows.

A note about using WINE (Wine is not an emulator)
Wine supports almost all .exe files, however, there has been reported difficulties with some programs.
Installers requiring a .MSI file may need a separate program.
Please see the following for information on Wine and programs that are compatible with it:
http://appdb.winehq.org/

Another note:
If you plan on using Ubuntu, you probably want to make sure you have an Internet connection (for updates, and using the Synaptics Program Manager) so you can get more applications.

A final note:
Good luck on what ever you end up choosing!
At least I can have a wireless network on a MAC. Quote from: Raptor on April 26, 2007, 05:09:43 AM

Solve : CAN'T GET ON INTERNET DUE TO DIGITAL PHONE SERVICE?

Answer»

Please help me!

I am going to explain this the best way I can.

I have Packet 8 digital phone service and road runner cable internet.

Packet 8 provided me with a phone device (router) and Road Runner provided a Motorola Modem. Here is how it is all connected.

I have a RJ45 cable from my computer to the LAN connection on the router, and a RJ45 connected to the WAN connection on the router to the Motorola modem. So in a nutshell there is a connection from my computer to the router and from the router to the Motorola modem. The router I have now is the second router that the phone company has sent me because the first one they sent me all of a sudden had LAN issues and I could not get on the internet (LAN light not even on on router or my computer at NIC card connection), this after I had phone service problems and downloaded a firmware update, however prior to the LAN/getting on the internet issue, after the update everything was working wonderful and I was able to talk on the phone and get on the internet with no problem for about a week

Now with the new router by clicking the internet explore icon I am uable to connect to the internet (get the "this page cannot be displayed message"). I checked my connectivity and I get the message that there is little or now connectivity. I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING AND HAVE BEEN GOING BACK AND FORTH WITH MY ISP AND THE PHONE SERVICE PEOPLE NO ONE SEEMS TO BE ABLE TO HELP ME.

I have done all of the following:

Unplugged everything and restarted the computer by connecting the Motorola modem first then the router.
Pinged IP address, internet sites, etc.

Configured the internet connection manually putting in an IP and default gateway (phone company had me do this). When I did this it showed the connection as being connected but I still could not get on the internet.

Updated driver on NIC card, reinstalled TCP/IP (phone company suggestion)

I have even done a complete system restore on my computer.

INTERNET STILL DOES NOT WORK SAYS LITTLE OR NO CONNECTIVITY EVEN HIT THE REPAIR BUTTON MY COMPUTER TRIED TO ACQUIRE A NEW IP ADDRESS, NO SUCCESS.

I THINK IT IS SOME TYPE OF CONFIGURATION ISSUE THAT I CAN NOT FIGURE OUT.

The phone Company states that my NIC card is not recognizing or receiving an IP address from the router, but my internet has worked fine previously with the same set up I described above (computer to router, router to motorola).

When I hook my computer directly to the Motorola modem everything works fine.

When I hooked everything up to another computer using the router the internet worked fine. So now the phone company states it definitely isn't there problem and they will help me no further and to either contact my personal computer support people or my ISP. My ISP states there is nothing wrong with their device since I am able to access the internet with my computer connected to their modem directly and of course refers me back to the phone company so I am playing technical support ping pong between the two.

I beleive both devices are working but something isn't talking or understanding something else I don't know whether it is my computer vs. the router, the router vs. the modem or what! I really BELIEVE it is a configuration issue, I just am at a lost as to how to configure my computer to make all devices work in harmony so I can get on the internet. PLEASE HELP IT IS DRIVING ME CRAAAAAAZY! As it stands I'm having to do what I a paying not to have to do and that is now I can't talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time because I have to unhook my computer from the phone router and directly to the Motorola modem and the phone router controls my telephone. My telephone works fine by the way when everything is connected like it is suppose to just not my internet.

WHAT ELSE CAN I DO!

I hope you can understand all of this.

Leave your computer running and reboot the router by temporarily removing the power. Thanks so much for your response. I tried that and I still can't get on. Connection still saying "Limited or no connection".

Do you have the telephone line filters?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=phone+line++filters&btnG=SearchHaven't tried that good Idea, I have cable internet will the filters that came with the DSL modem I had in the past due? Does it matter what kind of filter I use?

Thanks bunches, I will see if that works.

Keely Is the router set to DHCP and are you manually trying to configure an IP adress? Or vice versa.

Did the phone company install this connection or did you do it? What is your previous experience with setting up ADSL networks? O.K. now I feel like a big dummy. Apparently the device that was sent to me from the phone company is not a router. It is according to them and a friend just that....a device it has a port for the phone line, LAN, WAN and of course the plug in for the power (I'm confused by it all what is the device then?). I was told by a friend that perhaps I should buy a router because the device tends to dominate the signal as far as differentiating the phone signal and the internet signal which makes the computer have more difficulty obtaining the IP address needed so that I can get on the internet.

I tried telephone line filters, it still did not work. So now I am about to buy a router how do I incorporate the telephone device with the router. I was told if this doesn't work then I must have a problem with the NIC card which I don't understand because like I said before I can connect to the internet fine if I plug directly into ISP's modem. I was told the router will serve as a better "data traffic controller" shall we SAY so that signals don't have to compete. HELP ME OUT HOPE I'M MAKING SENSE I thought I was kind of computer literate until now

The setup was simple, the Phone company sent me their device and gave INSTRUCTIONS of how to hook up everything (just a matter of plugging everything in the RIGHT hole). LAN from my computer to LAN opening on device then a cable from the WAN opening on the device to the ISP's Modem. There was a seperate plug in for my phone that simply plugged into the device opening labeled LINE. Then all I had to do was take my phone call a number and enter an activation code given to me by the phone company and walla it is suppose to work, in which it did at one time. The only time I delt with an IP address is when I had problems and at that time I did configure an IP address manually which was given to me by the phone company that walked me through it all. This has been undone by the way. Other than that my computer is suppose to capture the IP addresses automatically but apparently this is not happening. I've don'e all the rebooting, unplugging, in the correct order a thousand times.

Is there a resolution to this?

Thanks sooooo much everyone.

KeelyIt's a modem, then. Which should have no problem getting an IP adress at all. If the equipment were that dodgy, it wouldn't pass any standards.

Is this cable or ADSL? What country do you live in? Thanks for the response.

I have cable internet and I live in the United States. The actual Road Runner Modem (cable modem) works fine, in fact when I plug directly from my computer to the Road Runner modem my internet access works fine. When I have to go through the "device" I have problems.

KeelyYou have configured the router the exact same way as you have configured the previous router?

Can the router obtain an IP adress from the modem? Think I have resolved my issue. It seems that I had other programs on my computer that were "dominating" so to speak when I tried to get on the internet. Example Yahoo and Limewire were also trying to sign on, I'm not sure but I think somehow this was interfering with me getting on. Not to mention those type of programs tend to corrupt files and crash computers. A limewire window would always pop of stating it couldn't get on the internet (summary). I disabled limewire and my problem was solved but then all of a sudden I started having problems again. I then removed the program all together (from every user). Somehow there were STILL components of limewire left because then I was getting messages that limewire was having problems downloading rrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!! is all I could say. So, I did a search for limewire files on my entire C drive including hidden files. There deeply enbedded in my computer was an uninstall program for limewire I did this and my problem was solved!

Well kind of solved I still have to every once in a while play with my computer to sign on, reset modem, phone device etc. What I am finding is working now is that I have to disable my internet connection and then enable it again then I usually can get on with no problem. Weird uh?

This is not to say I won't have problems again, though it is a pain to have to go through so many steps to get on, I'm glad I do at least get on now.

Thanks for everything it was a pleasure brainstorming with everyone on this one you all are complete smarties! Luv ya.

That just doesn't sound right.

Can anybody help me to place video on forum. Like in Youtube. It is a phpBB forum. please don't. they clutter up the page and load slower than actually going to the site. just post a link. The forum doesn't support HTML, so you'll have to just post a link.

But for forums that do support HTML, YouTube SUPPLIES the code, which usually looks something like...

Code: [Select]<object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="YOUTUBE LINK"></param>
<param name="wmode" value="transparent"></param>
<embed src="YOUTUBE LINK AGAIN" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" width="425" height="350"></embed></object>
formatting HTML code. Many forums including this one do not support the ability to embed flash files into the posts because of security vulnerabilities. You're right, that didn't even cross my mind.

Peccavi...sorry, buddy, but you'll just have to post a link to any videos you want to show. This ...................is .................the ..............widest................... page ............i've ...........seen ...........in awhile.Looks the same all the other pages to me. Yeah Patio, same here. It's because of the Code CBMatt POSTED. The browser is being stretched so I have a bar thingy at the bottem.Edit: My plan was ruined! This is a long page

(Cut link size down... it moved the avatars and posts WAYYY over)

Did anyone find a truncating SMF modification that cuts links like that?
I notice them taking up a lot of space quite often

Graduate, School of Hard Knocks Yeah, GX1_Man, had some real head-bangers out there

At the time, 2001, the course was $5K. I had checked into other schools and they (they being Heald, ITT Tech, etc.) were anywhere from $10-to-$25K. I couldn't afford them so I went to Techskills in Sacramento. It was a home study course with access to teachers and a classroom with a lab.

Glad I did it and as you know we are are all in ..."continuing education".

My better half keeps telling me I'm definitely certifiable, does that count? None, yet, my "certified" FORMER employer KNEW less than i did, and he has been in the business of computers for thirteen years.. Tis a sad world we live in.. My former boss even was stupid enough to believe that using a stock intel fan and heatsink would be adequate for a pentium FOUR 3.4ghz prescott with NO CASE FANS. of course, they got well over 70c, i told him and told him that was not good, that they should not idle above about 45 - 50c or you risk burnout, he didnt listen.. 'Till one blew its guts out from overheating while installing XP pro.. Scared the crap out of him, he was sitting there waiting for it to finish configuring, then, the CPU fried. However, i have failed to CONVINCE him that the ATI HyperMemory video cards are anything more than junk. I eventually quit the job for several reasons, the first reason was his incompetence, and utter stupidity, the second was when the craptastic offbrand PSU's that came with the cases blew out he blamed me, and the third, was that he wanted me to sign off on a computer that i did not assemble, which, he had repeatedly told me NOT to do. If he cant follow his own stupid guidelines, i dont see him as a competent employer, or person for that matter.Just A+ here. However, I believe that certification for the most part is over rated. I've read many of the books for MCSE and CNA but never went in for testing. Unless you're actually planning on getting a job where it's required I think getting a certification is going to get lost for most people. Seems that if you don't USE it you loose it.

Solve : Disney Debuts Social-Networking Site for Kids Under 14?

Answer»
Walt Disney Co. (DIS) unveiled a program on Tuesday to let preteens create personal mini Web sites like MySpace's very popular social networking site for older teens and young adults, with parental controls it hopes will create a safe haven.

The Disney feature, called Disney Xtreme Digital, or Disney XD, is aimed at kids under 14, with parents getting control over Internet activities, Paul Yanover, executive vice president and managing director of Disney Online, said in an interview.

A chat feature requires parental approval for kids to go beyond trading canned messages designed to prevent users from revealing personal information, or from using profanity.

Kids can gather games, videos and music files from Disney's promotions-rich Web site and place them on a page that they decorate with a selection of motifs from the COMPANY's rich character library.

Yanover said the feature limits kids to using Disney content on their Web sites, and would allow parents to monitor interaction. At the same time, Disney can protect its image on the freewheeling Web, he said.

"There is a weaving together of entertainment and promotion and marketing," he added. "It's difficult to say where ONE ends and the other begins."

The feature is meant for use on high-speed Internet connections. The approximately 30 million U.S. broadband households already make up about 90 percent of visitors to Disney.com, Yanover said.

Kids earn points for every activity they participate in on Disney XD, and can use the points to purchase items such as virtual stickers or Rube Goldberg-type machines like bubble makers for their pages.

The goal is to create a community of KID marketers for Disney, as kids visit each other's sites and talk up Disney TV shows, characters, and products.

"I want tons of kids immersed in my brands and franchises. What better marketer do I have than a kid?" Yanover said. "It's really about building a kid community ... (that) extends beyond individual Disney products, Web sites and titles."

The company unveiled the feature at a New York event featuring 'tween heartthrob Corbin Bleu, star of the popular Disney Channel movies "High School Musical" and "JUMP In," whose new album debuted on the site.

Solve : Need some assistance...?

Hey all,

This is the problem. After my computer has been running for a few HOURS I start getting lag/pauses in my mouse and sound. Kind of like skips on a cd or record. I have tooled with it but don't know what the heck is going on. . This has been going on for about a week. It stops if I reboot. Haven't put any new programs on and have run virus and spyware with no hits. Diving me nuts. Any thoughts?

My build:

C2D E6600 (not oc'd)
MSI Platinum V2 975X
Zalman Fan
3 Gig memory 667mHz PC5300
PNY 7600GT
500W PSU with a generic case
Sound is an Audigy 2 platinum. Install the latest soundcard drivers from Creative? what kind of mouse??It's a logitech wireless keyboard and laser mouse. All drivers are uptodate. It happens after the system is running for a couple hours. have you contact logitech to see if there is an issue with the software?

EH, not in my book. I'd say web surfing and word processing clearly implies two things, two applications being open, a browser and a word processor, not an email client or spreadsheet or PDF reader. I've always used it as a general term for anything that doesn't require the use of memory intensive programs such as Photoshop or 3D applications.

Solve : 1st day of drive of a 2 day collection campaign?

Answer»

The EVENT runs Friday and Saturday, 5/4/07 and 5/5/07, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days. For details, see http://www.lccsohio.org/recyclingflyer507.pdf.Will you be there? Yes, part of the time. I'll be helping with it. I joined the organization about 9 months ago.

This topic appeared here in the Windows forum as a result of testing the Calendar feature in the forum. I was CURIOUS to see how that works. Now, I know it's not just a private calendar. Good luck on the event. Looks like a good idea and cause. I believe you're the first person to use the calender option. I was SURPRISED to see that the addition of the calender does not show on the events on the main page. Maybe it's something that can be added.

Doesn't look like it added it to the correct LOCATION either. I think that was a setting I did not adjust. I'll try to fix that as well. For now though moving to Other.Your event will now be showing up on the Forums home page (by the birthdays/holidays). Hope this generates as much interest as possible. Sorry I didn't notice this EARLIER.

Solve : DATA RETRIEVAL?

Answer»

my computer TOLD me I had a corrupted config.sys file. Could not start in safe mode. Used system restore (F10). All my data files were deleted. How can I retrieve my data? I get different answers as to whether I can. Either way, no one has been able to tell me how to.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!Config.sys and system restore on the same machine? What OPERATING system is this?

What is the full story on what happened prior to this? There is much more involved with this PROBLEM?

What virus and SPYWARE programs were you using regularly?

There are some programs that claim to retrieve data (PC Inspector is one that Raptor likes) and you can google for "data recovery programs". The main thing is to not use the machine except for data retrieval. If you can slave that drive into another machine for this, that would be preferable.

Here's a New Egg link for sound cards:

The Freetalk Forums. How much does it cost ? ?Hmmm. O.K.

Get a Creative soundcard if you're a gamer. Anything from Audigy 4 and above and >40 dollars.

If you're not a gamer, get something cheap. OK. Im a bigtime gamer.

the freetalk forums are free if that is what your ASKING about.

Solve : Touchpad Problems?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1805-S207 laptop computer with Windows XP that I recently replaced the hard-drive. I reinstalled the OPERATING system using the disks supplied with the computer. Everything seems to work fine until I close the LID and the unit shuts down. When I open it back up and the unit starts up the touchpad does not function properly. I can move the curser around but cannot open any programs. When I tap on it to open a program, nothing happens. I have to completely shut the unit down and reboot it to make the touchpad work. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to SOLVE this problem?

ThanksWhen you close the lid, what happens to the computer? Does it go on standby?Try re-installing the touchpad drivers LOCATED on the Toshiba DRIVER disk...
