Solve : Not able to start up in my own account?

Answer»

Hi Y'all,

I've got a serious problem here. My puter (on windows XP) FROZE (didn't even respond to ctrl-alt-del) so I restarted it. After typing in my password, up popped a little window telling me windows was unable to load the local profile (I have to translate what it really says into english so on the english versions something else would have been mentioned). It says I don't have the rights to get into my own account and, after a timer of some 30 seconds has counted down, I am being logged in with a temporary profile. From this temporary profile I am unable to get unto ANY of my word or excel files nor my pictures or my explorer favourites or just about anything that is a personal file.

Could anyone please help me with this?

Questions coming up are..
does those 30 seconds give me time to push a certain button to get me into a recoverysystem or such?
Could I change my own account (the puter really has just the ONE account) from the temporary one I am being pushed into?
or would I have to hack my own account.. and if yes, how?

From the DOS prompt I can see that all my files still exist.. just can't find a way to get into them..

Any help really appreciated!!!

AmyTry this:

http://www.winxptutor.com/ownership.htmHi,

I tried it and all went well untill I hit enter after confirming that I wanted to replace the owner rights.

The puter replied with something that would sound like: "There has been a mistake during the USE of securityinformation on *name file*. This security ID may not be provided as the owner of this object."

Got any more ideas please? I can see there are more options around these security issues, but since I have no clue about the effects if I would just play around with them trying my luck, and my files are really really way too VALUABLE to loose, I don't DARE try them.Hi,

Stop thinking, it's solved!

I set the settings for my system back to how to were last month and that did the trick (did it from safe mode)

Hope this information can still be usefull to someone else - aw how it sucks to loose your information! Take it from me: make back-ups! (and give your loved ones a hug a day!

Bye bye me is one happy little girly now! yeah yeahThat was the next suggestion. Glad you are all fixed up and thanks for posting back.

Solve : Connecting to an online game with a proxy?

Answer»

Basically, I'm TRYING to play a free Japanese MMO. Based off the information I've gotten from Google, it seems that I need to use a proxy to make it think I'm in Japan. But, I don't know much about proxies and I'm not sure what to do. Any ADVICE would be appreciated.

I'm running Windows XP Home SP2 and have HTTP-Tunnel and ProxyCap installed.
have your tried just port forwarding the game ports??Unless you can find a PAID proxy, you're never going to find a proxy that won't TEST your patience to the LIMIT. Especially not one in Japan.

Solve : help please!!!?

Answer»

hey guys i have a real PROBLEM. i have a gateway lap top. the other night i unplugged it and used the battery while watching a movie with my wife. the next day i went to plug it back in and i wont charge. the computer runs fine it just wont charge. any suggestions?Bad Battery

Bad AC Adapter

Bad connector

These come to mind for starters.ok thank you. i was TOLD to remove the battery and put it back in, but that didnt work either. it also wont work just plugged into the wall without the battery. When was the last time you used the battery? (For at least 5 minutes)

When was the last time you ran the battery calibration utility? (In the BIOS setup)Leave the battery out of the unit for about 4 hours...Plug it back in hook up the DC and let it sit untouched overnite. And how old is the battery?i had used the battery the night before to watch a movie. the battery is about 7 months old, but 90% of the time i use the computer while plugged into the wall.I had this same problem in my laptop, and it ended up being a bad solder joint in the AC jack... if none of the other suggestions work you would be best off getting it looked at... is it under warranty? good luck!
-JohnWhat model Gateway is this? Many of their laptop batteries have recently been recalled. If yours is ONE of them, you can try contacting them for a free replacement.

Solve : Computer will not boot off a cd?

Answer»

jackpot, after some exstensive research that is the version I pick looked like a good learning curve. So that is why I am a little CONFUSED because it told me that a screen would pop asking what language i wanted and I would be able to go from there. But if that was the case it would have been way to easy for my first linux install. Only one thing to do and that is keep trouble shooting.I would imagine if the ISO you downloaded contained .bat and .exe files then it isnt a Linux install CD. You've succeeded at making a bootable DOS CD.

If you type VER at the prompt, and you see FreeDOS mentioned, I think I can guess what happened...

You could also visit Ubuntu's site and order their CD's...they will ship you up to 10 copies of their latest.

It comes with a live CD that you can just run from the CD and a full installation CD that's bootable as well...

Very Handy.now i tried to download from a new mirror and it did the same thingWhat is the web page, what is the file name, and how are you burning it?
im downloading from the ubuntu homepage bout 700megsCommand promt is as follows. "[DR-DOS] A:\>" When i run the .exe its almost like i see a screen flash before it and i selects the lauguage automaticly Hey i figured it out did what i should have done in the first place went to the home page and followed there instructions to a tee and it is working so far but it is loading slowQuote from: patio on April 22, 2007, 02:11:14 AM

Why are you not trying this method ? ?I give up, I haven't got a clue as to what the OP is trying to do here.. I've never seen anyone make such a problem out of unpacking/burning an image to a CD and then boot from it.. What he found out, but hasn't told us, is that he had burned a bootable data disk, not the iso image. wwbmu.exe is a German partitioning tool for DOS. That's the clue. Google for it and you will see just how many people make this mistake.
With 3 day shipping he would have had his Ubuntu CD's by now...

And they are FREE.Quote from: GX1_Man on April 18, 2007, 07:38:27 PM
Did you burn the ISO with Nero or some other burning program? If you just copy the ISO file you downloaded to a CD that is not bootable.

From six days ago.ok sorry folk that i have left some of you lost i am in the process of doing a lot of things and trying to learn HTML, XHTML, Java script and some other things. So here is an UPDATE. Went to the web page the GAVE directions and link to a program that i burned the iso image on and it works the os started to load. but i soon DISCOVERED that it was just way to much for my machine to handle. I put it in my new machine and it booted just fine. Tried to install it and got past the first step and i swear to god there was no way what so ever to move to the next step. Any one my old machine is an Old IBM Aptiva 386 probably or maybe if i am lucky 486, but my goal is to use this machine to host a simple web site. So does anyone know of a small, well balanced, stable linux version that i could run and learn from for my old IBM?Double post, same answer:

Gentoo. A 386 and how much RAM (he cringed) and how big a hard drive?

I think you CAN, but it will not have X Windows, only command line and that can be quite a steep learning curve.

By limiting yourself with this machine you may have an unpleasant experience which is not necessary.

Solve : My lightswitch controls my computer power!? and other problems :|?

Answer»

Hi all, new to the forum and help would be appreciated!

First off i just wanna say hey to everybody on this forum! you've been doing a great job for the people with problems out there and deserve a big thank you to say the least from those people! I would like to contribute too but there is something that has been bothering me lately

Im not sure wether im overloading the mains power in my room, but the few odd times i have turned on my lamp on my table i hear a really loud 'surging/electric' noise and it sounds like my speakers are being fryed! (this is when my tower is powered off, possibly on stand by mode, and the speakers/printer etc are turned on) And the light kinda goes dim until i switch it back off or move it AROUND slightly!

The odd time, it has actually turned my pc and printer on!

But perhaps stranger again is that my ceiling light in my room has once done the same thing!

I dont know why and i dont know too much about electrical outlets here, but am i over juicing it with the over stuff in my room on perhaps?

ANOTHER annoying problem... -

To be brief - My first webcam i baught wouldnt work on my computer. The NETWORK crashed and froze up after i tried to launch a msn convo or EVEN use the camera.. .. so after borrowing my girlfriends spare webcam now, i have the same problem, it definatly works with XP and my drivers and everything seem to be fine, so what could be the problem?Jamesmith.......Quote

Re: My lightswitch controls my computer power!?
Are you saying that the wall recepticle ( that the pc is plugged into) is switched ?
You topic seems to infer that...... perhaps you could clarify.
Are you located in North America?
About how old is the house that the computer is installed in ?
Do you have any other wall PLUGS ( recepticles) in you room that you could try the pc in .......and see if it reacts the same way?

Moving on to the webcam.......... What is the make and model of it ?
You say it crashes the network....... is your machine connected to the net, wired or wireless.
Then you say it locked up ( froze) ...do mean the network connection had to be reset or do you mean something else ?

Please try and answer these questions.

dl65

Sounds like an overloaded circuit, and also a bad switch with arcing at the contacts, expecially this bit

Quote
And the light kinda goes dim until i switch it back off or move it around slightly!

You want an electrician. PRONTO.

Hope you've got good fire insurance.

Okey, its happened with more then one webcam, but this one is a logitech Quickcam

Yeah my network is wireless, internet connection is via another pc downstairs

I man the split second i initiate anything to do with the webcam, the icons on the systray freeze, i cant access my belkin software to restart the net, nor can i through windows > network connections

sometimes, my mouse can freeze too, thats USB aswell, but only sometimes when this happens

But, yeah ive checked the drivers for the cam and theyre fine, its for a compatable OS (win XP) and everything.. im guessing this has something to do with windows but cant quite figure out where

After the network crashes, the PC seems to go real slow, sometimes lock up completly

(and to the other guy, im sure its a circuit overload yeah, thanks so much for that help Quote from: Jamesmith on April 25, 2007, 12:42:29 PM

Ok then no harm done. It's just that I work for an insurance company and I've seen a lot of damage done by overloaded wiring. It doesn't have to burn your house down just a smallfire can cost quite a few grand in repairs.
Jamesmith....... Ok ...... I see how you are connected now........
Can you try this........
1. disconnect from the network........
2. now... click on the quickcam icon and open up the logitech QuickCam control panel. Does you system remain stable ? ....... if it does , click as indicated on the attachment ...... does the camera window open and the cam turn on ?

Solve : Open Source Softwares!?

Answer»

Hey friends,

I just wanted your opinion - one of my acquaintances DOWNLOADS copyrighted stuff - ebooks, movies, audio etc. from internet with the help of sharing softwares like limewire, shareazaa etc..

Is'nt it very risky and one can be sued for downloading patented/ copyrighted stuff??

Thanx in advance for your responses!!Isn't downloading songs on limewire and downloading movies illegal? You can be sued, but the Internet Service Provider will only become interested if you UPLOAD and/or download large amounts of data or if you involve yourself with illegal material such as child pornography.

Whether it is illegal to upload or download copyrighted material depends on your country its laws.

You can safely download music and films and avoid prosecution, but if you use shareaza or limewire, I think you've received punishment enough..if you use shareaza or limewire, I think you've received punishment enough..

What does that MEAN??

It's not the most trustworthy software out there. I hope your "acquaintance" likes viruses. There have been individuals prosecuted for this in the past and there will be more in the future...If hes not downloading an excessive amount then hes not going to get caught for a long time. However if hes downloading excessive amounts then Yes, he is going to get caught.
If IM honest, you could ask most people you know and they to will all tell you that they too download illegally. It's easy, it's fast and at the MOMENT for the average downloader it's not a high risk.
Hope this helps

Chris

Solve : DSL for Older Computer??

Answer»

My eMachine is 6 years old and extremely slow. Emailing is OK, it's the surfing that's bad.
Would SWITCHING from dial-up to DSL help at all? I'm using Windows ME.
Thanks.......Connection speed is more important than anything else.

It would help to know about the hardware and software you are using as well. You will most likely need a memory upgrade as well. Installing the DSL software will probably give you an insufficient memory error if you only have 256M. I've had to upgrade several e-machines for friends who had this problem. They were using XP - I've no experience with ME.But.. There is one person who does.....! M-M-M..... I can't say it. Please don't force me! Quote from: 2k_dummy on April 17, 2007, 04:46:06 AM

Win ME ... 256MB ... insufficient memory error. I don't think so.

He may not need to install "DSL software". ISP's often want you to believe you need to install special software but it's not always necessary. Just changing Windows connection settings may be enough.

I have my mother's old eMachines 466id (466MHz Celeron, Win 98SE, 128MB) here. WEB pages with lots of Flash, javascript, etc. will display a little slower than in a faster MACHINE, but it's still much faster with DSL than with dialup.128 RAM and any Windows pre-XP with any processor will work fine.I did state "they were using XP" and "I have no experience with ME". <shrug>SORRY about that, 2k_dummy. I see I mis-read your post.

Solve : question on adding "links" to a website ??

Answer»

I have a friend with a small personal website. He added a link to youtube & some other sites. Do you need permission from these sites before doing so?
Is there some kind of protocol involved before adding links? I don't think so, because it's not like you're linking to a copyrighted download.

No, I don't think so.Thanks -dblade .....

I was thinking ALONG the same lines "copyrighted"
By "added a link" you mean a hyperlink? If so, then your friend has nothing to worry about. There's nothing wrong with linking to content on another site. There could, however, be a problem if he were to post the content directly on his site, especially if he were to hotlink it. But in the case of Youtube videos, I wouldn't worry too much. It's basically public domain, so I wouldn't foresee any copyright issues for your friend. Thanks "Mathew"

hotlink > isn't that where it's highlighted and you just click on it and it takes you there?

No, i think hotlink is doing this:

Where that picture is directly from the owners website
If i'm not supposed to do that, just tell me and i'll remove that pictureQuote from: honvetops on April 19, 2007, 06:11:26 AM

hotlink > isn't that where it's highlighted and you just click on it and it takes you there?
No, that's a hyperlink. Hotlinking is when you take material from a site and put it on your own without hosting it on your server, which uses their bandwidth.

I personally don't care if you do it or not 'cause it's not my bandwidth, but I do believe Nathan frowns upon it.There is no copyright on linking to a website, there is however, copyright on using whatever another webmaster created. CONSIDERING WHETHER or not he copyrighted it. Nothing on Youtube is copyrighted, if it is, it will be removed. You can directly link to Youtube MOVIES if you want. I removed the image, Mario never looked good with an applei appreciate all the info for this old man, I will (link) him this thread ( LOL )

Solve : AMD's Quad Core system?

Answer»

AMD's newest idea the QUAD Core system. For anyone who hasn't seen the video, pretty amazing, quad core processors, four gigs of ram, four video cards!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e4VtxVIO3p8Checked out the video...freakin' awesome!

Four side fans???

Can you imagine the heat???

How would you like your steak, sir? That's insane.
4Gb of RAM seems FAR too low for a system like that.
And having two 8800s and two "video cards" (unspecified) seems odd to me.
Still amazing though, and very upgradeable."This site is blocked by the SonicWALL Content Filter Service. If the site was blocked incorrectly please notify your network administrator."
GAH!

I will have to try later. Is this a computer or a CPU? It's a computer with 4Gb of RAM, an AMD quad core CPU and 2x8800 GPUs, plus two unidentified GPUs.
Multiple monitors.
Encoding/decoding several HD videos, plus playing WOW (I think?) and some other stuff, all at once.
Also can be UPGRADED with a second quad core CPU for a total of 8 cores.
Basically just showing off what they can do.sounds very intresting (applaud) I will have to wait until I am home to see that videoThat's nuts. I wonder what a machine like that would cost. And will that run Vista?I bet it can't BALANCE a budget !!! Quote from: GX1_Man on April 11, 2007, 06:36:43 AM

How about WordPad? If you normally don't use it, try it as a troubleshooting step here. Try different font sizes. Does changing the font size in WordPad change your printing results?Or simply uninstall the printer software, reboot and install it again, per the instructions. If that doesn't fix it, you are looking at a hardware problem.

Solve : Laptop Keyboard Problem.?

Answer»

Hello.

I've been having problems with my laptop keyboard. I'm using an HP DV4000, and recently the keys have been making clicking sounds, and have been getting stiffer as the computer heats up. Usually this would be thought of as something spilled on the keyboard, but that's not the case (Nothing has been spilled on or inside the keyboard). I have removed the keys, cleaned them one by one, and it still happens. The more the computer heats up, the worse the keys seem to get.

Any suggestions? Maybe a list of things that could be causing my keyboard to act this way?

Thanks.Have you ever done maitenence on your keyboard?
Is your computer getting to a temperature level that is beyond what it should be?Buy one of those cooling pads, keep the laptop cool to prevent the keys from 'stiffening up' ...? When the computer gets too hot, the keys start to stick........i know when two pieces of PLASTIC get too hot like at almost MELTING temperature, they get sticky and can stick TOGETHER a bit. Maybe the fan isn't cooling your computer efficiently.Your computer must be getting too hot.

Everyone else is saying it, so I thought I'd join it.

Over a year now and my computer is really upsetting me in these past events which have accoured, help me find a way to fix this cause i dont know what to do anymore. OK this is my problem. I installed a game called emporer battle for dune. and it worked FINE. but one day it wouldnt work at all. so i uninstalled it so i could reinstall it. I tried and nothing happend at all... the autorun didnt work so i decided to try running the installer of the disk and screw the autorun. again nothing happend. i should have typed this earlier but aroud that week i ended up runing into a trojan virus and REMOVED it with superatispyware blah blah blah but the thing is it was removed. But alot changed with 2 of my games ive seen Emperor still doesnt work. the other game is command and conquer tiberian sun. that i just found out doesnt run but i can install it. I have a feeling somthing is seriously wrong but those 2 games are all i've seen stop working. please tell me whats wrong.Google, download and install Crap Cleaner, AVG Free and Adaware SE. Run them (Not at the same time) and be sure to set 'm to maximum yield. I would but i doubt my comp can do it... i problem ive had for the whole year is that when ive installed too much or have too much things running my computer automaticly restarts itself and its frustrating so i try to not have too much on my computer. Most of my computer is tooken up because i like to play many video games. but downloading them just keeps screwing things up so i stopped downloading full games off of P2p networking.Who knows what all you are infected with from P2P downloading? I suspect the trojan that somehow you got "fixed" by some antispyware product I have never heard of is only the tip of the iceberg.Quote from: heroradune on April 14, 2007, 04:39:25 PM

Um, yeah, you're just asking for trouble with that one. If you don't follow Raptor's original instructions, there isn't really anything we can do here. SUPERAntiSpyware is a decent program, but you need more than just that. You'll also want to get RID of your P2P programs if you still have them. As long as you continue to use them, there's no point in HELPING you.

Solve : Raid 1 Question?

Answer»

I'm running RAID1 on an HP 7680n computer. Before I setup Raid, the computer came equipped with 2-250 gig harddrives. Drive "C" was partitioned with about a 10 GB partiton for recovery. I have created from that partition a set of recovery disks. My question is this: I want to EXPAND that 10 gig partition to 30 or so gig and install VISTA, and run dual boot. What effect will this have on the raid array? My present operating system is 05 MCE

Solve : screen?

Answer»

My SON DROPPED my lap top, and now the screen is busted. My question is can it be fixed? Depends on the laptop...some are reasonable in price while others are exhorbitant.YES, don't fret!! Just hit him a few times!! It's late and I am tired but I have an excellent article in mag on how to do it yourself and save some $$$ if someone else has a good reply take it... I will post more info on it tomorrow at work.. What brand laptop is it? How new/old.....might put a model # down too just in case... Sleep tight* ;-) OK, I need the brand name / model of your laptop. I have my info this morning, I just need to look up what you have first, then I can give you the info/ instructions on how to get this thing off, then go -online and find a replacement & "do it yourself"..... save $$$ 1. Remove the battery then disconnect the power brick. For most laptops you will need a "small" Philips screwdriver and a very small flat-head screwdriver or knife.

( power brick ) -when a computer user unpacks a notebook computer, one of the first components he will see is the power brick. This large, rectangular piece weighs a pound or two, but is essential to the machine's operation. The power brick is part of the external power supply. It also provides the power for the computer to charge its batteries. Plugging straight AC from a wall outlet into a notebook would blow the circuits, so lower-voltage DC powers the notebook. The power brick accomplishes the conversion. The computer is plugged into the power brick, while a cord runs from the power brick into a standard AC plug.

2. Remove the bezel screws , First- locate the screw covers , these small rubber covers are generally found on the front of the display bezel( surrounding the frame) on some brands, these may be along the side of the screen. Use the tip of a small flat-head screwdriver or small knife, carefully pry back the corner of each rubber cover around the screen until you can see if a screw lies underneath, if you locate the screw, remove it. Typically you will find four- to- six screws around the bezel. Store these screws with the rubber covers, aside.
3. Remove the bezel, at the bottom CENTER of the LCD screen, carefully work your fingers between the bezel and the screen. Gently* pull at the bezel, usually it will easily snap loose, if not, gently pull at it in different directions until it does. Work your way around the rest of the bezel, pulling it away from the rear plastic of the screen cover. Once its off , you will see the LCD in its metal frame. On “most” laptops, the inverter board is directly below the screen/ You may now be able to tilt the LCD screen forward, away from the plastic shell behind it. If not, check for additional screws securing the the frame to the shell.
4. Find the RIGHT replacement part. Now that you have exposed the screen, look for a label on the back showing the manufacturers part number. This typically consists of one or more letters, followed by a series of numbers. some Mfg’s -sometimes use different screens for the same model, this number will ensure you get the proper replacement.
5. The fun part- ;-( check your account balance!)
6. Chances are you could purchase directly from the Mfg, it will be costly. Instead… do a “google search 1st”……
Enter the part number for the LCD or the LCD model number and include TERMS like : “replacement LCD”. Also, try ebay….
7. replacing the broken screen. To be followed, etc…..

Is that what you intended to say?

YES, you should be concerned about it. Do you have firewall installed and enabled? What type of Internet connection are you using? DSL, cable? I'd be concerned if:

A) It's a new INSTALLATION of Windows
B) You have not got a firewall/virus scanner/spyware scanner
C) You're not downloading large files (IE: less-than-legal stuff) I have a router and firewall. I also downloaded some free Alarm zone spyware and ran it. The installation of Windows is not new.
I'm thinking I should maybe get the computer checked out by a tech.I forgot to mention, it's a DSL connection and I'm using the latest version of Firefox.
Thanks for the replies. You're not downloading anything? What do your firewall logbooks tell you? Hi there,
Have you recently ran an Anti-Virus?! If so what where the results?! Id also recommend running another Anti virus as i personally think your P.C might be being used as what's called a 'Zombie'. What does anyone else think?
Here is a definition as a P.C being a Zombie, taken from the BBC website. (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/click_online/3618944.stm)
Quote
Armies for hire

An average zombie PC looks like any regular computer: it doesn't eat flesh, groan or have aspirations to appear in a Michael Jackson video.

But while you go about your business, your machine is slavishly following orders from a remote master... sending out spam worldwide, or trying to bring down websites.
One zombie pc doing this on its own would be bad enough. But there are hundreds of thousands of them, all working together in armies called botnets.

These can send out billions of spam e-mails: in fact 70 per cent of all spam is generated by botnets.

As GOOGLE and Microsoft recently found out, the botnets can also bring down websites - by bombarding them with thousands of requests every second.

These botnets are now up for hire. People with the right kind of money and contacts can rent such services to do their dirty work. But who would want to rent them and why?

To find out, we spoke to Detective INSPECTOR Chris Simpson from Scotland Yard's computer crimes unit, and Paul Wood from internet security experts MessageLabs.

You can watch the interview - which also explains steps you can take if you are affected - by clicking the video link in the box above.

Chris
Yep, all that outgoing data flow that he has no clue about sure points to Zombieland (new term ). If he's using Windows firewall, he needs to switch to a different firewall. Windows firewall monitors incoming traffic, but not outgoing traffic.I guess maybe I didn't have a firewall installed and enabled after all. I just installed the Comodo firewall and it seems to be working (a lot less stuff coming in).
Thanks for the help! And, a lot less going out, too? Glad to hear you installed that firewall.

If you're not familiar with Windows Security Center, spent a little time getting acquainted with it. You'll find it in Control Panel.

Since you installed Comodo firewall, you should turn off Windows firewall if it's still enabled. Running two firewalls is generally not a good idea. To check this, look in Windows Security Center.

Have you recently done a virus scan of your P.C?!

Solve : Play order of files in mp3 device??

Answer»

I have a Samsung mp3 player (model YP-U2, 512 mb).

It has it's own software program for organising files and I also use Windows MEDIA Centre.

My problem is that when I transfer files from more than one cd into the device (say cd A and cd B and say 20 tracks from each) they appear and are played in order: A1, B1, A2, B2, A3....etc.

As I use the player for spoken word material this means I can only listen to one cd at a TIME, then have to delete and load the next. There must be a way of correcting this but I can't figure it out - I've tried making playlists, but that doesn't work, and I can find nothing in Media Centre help menu.

Any SUGGESTIONS would be appreciated.I don't get this. By "use the player for spoken word material", you mean you use it as a voice recorder, right? So, how does using it as a voice recorder limit you to only loading one CD at a time on it?

I also use an MP3 player as a voice recorder and have music on it. It's only a 256MB model but doing some voice recordings on it in no way affects the mix of music I load on it. The only limitation is the AMOUNT of memory. But, even a 256MB player can hold several hours of music and still hold some voice recordings. Thanks for reply Soybean.

I should have explained more clearly - I mean talking books cds. Recently it's been BBC history sets of three or more cds. As you can imagine, with any narrative thread this mixed up order is hopeless.

I wonder if editing the track numbers before transmitting to the device would help. Rename the files to something more consecutive.

File 1, file 2, file 3, etc.

Not A1, B1, A2.

"Spoken material" is referred to as an 'audio book'. Quote from: soybean on April 13, 2007, 09:29:57 AM

But, even a 256MB player can hold several hours of music and still hold some voice recordings.

Several hours? Must be some small files. What quality do you use? I'm lucky to get two hours of music on my 512 GB iPod Shuffle. The files are numbered just 1, 2, 3, etc in Media Player and in the device. I only quoted A1 and B1 to indicate that the first file from cd B came immediately after file 1 of cd A, and so on, on the device.

I tried editing the numbers in Media Player. Two cds, each 19 tracks, renumbering the second cd 20 to 38, but got in a mess - just too fiddly.

Over here we call them "Spoken word", or "Talking books".So is it COMPLETELY random?

Perhaps you accidentally toggled the shuffle mode on your Mp3 player. I CHECKED the shuffle option and its "off".

On the device the tracks are in a logical sequence - just the wrong logic!
The first file on the first cd is followed by the first file on the second cd, the second file on the first cd is followed by the second file on the second cd and so on - making the order on the device: 1 1, 2 2, 3 3 ...

I would have thought that anything loaded on to the device would play in the order it was loaded, but that's not happening here. It's very exasperating.

Anyway, thanks for your interest.Instead of using track 1, track 2, etc., try using actual file names, then recreate your playlist. The logical listing is like windows explorer - alpha-numerical order.in a direct accsess FAT filesystem MP3 player if you setup the hierarchy like this then it will play in order:

disk
|--CD 001
| |-Track 001
| |-Track 002
| |-so on and so forth
|--CD 002
| |-Track 001
| |-Track 002
| |-so on and so forth
|--so on and so forth

then it will play hte files from CD 1 in order from first to last then move on to CD 2 make sure that you use placholders for FAT/FAT32/NTFS/Mac OS/Mac OS Exc/whavever other filesystem your useing unless you want it to be organized like so:

1
10

18
19
2
20

11
12
13

16
17
18
19
20
21
22
23

if you have 100 files then the placeholder for 1 looks like this 001 and the place holder for 10 look like this 010 if you have 1000 files then its 0001, 0010, 0100, 0043, ect ect. letters are not adiquate placholders unless you want to collate the files (the A1, B1, C1, A2, B2, C2, ect ect format) this is how i made it work on my Crative Zen V Plus and RCA Lyria MP3 players and its simple computer logic to organize the files properly i hope this helps Thanks for all suggestions -

Whatever I try in the way of editing the playlists I make of the cds, the result in the device is the same. I wonder if there is some sort of inbuilt play instruction in the cds themselves.

I guess I'll have to put up with the irritation of one cd at a time, for the time being, but I'll keep plugging away.Sounds like it is the Samsung software program that is lacking features here...

Solve : Best Buy 'Geek Squad' Member -Taping Showering Woman With Cell Phone?

Answer» Why doesn't this surprise me ?

Thursday , April 12, 2007 (AP)

POMONA, Calif. —
A 22-year-old woman and her mother are suing Best Buy and its "Geek Squad" computer repair team for dispatching a technician who they say videotaped the daughter taking a shower.

Sarah Vasquez and her mother Natalie Fornaciari filed a Superior Court lawsuit Wednesday claiming technician Hao Kuo Chi, 26, placed his cellular telephone in Vasquez's bathroom during a service call March 4 in the family's Walnut home and recorded her showering.

The suit also claims the phone was found in the bedroom of Vasquez's 13-year-old sister, Kelly Rocha.

"I couldn't believe this was happening to me," Vasquez said. "I felt embarrassed and dirty because he did this when I was naked."

Chi was arrested and later charged with misdemeanor counts of using a camera to view a person without consent and ANNOYING or molesting a child under 18, said Sgt. Bob Skidlarski of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. A court hearing will be held May 3.

Best Buy officials released a statement saying the company learned of the lawsuit shortly after it was announced Wednesday.

"OBVIOUSLY, we intend to cooperate fully with any investigation into this matter," the statement said.

Chi was at the family's home for a scheduled appointment, according to the lawsuit.

Vasquez claims she noticed a cell phone positioned on her bathroom sink when she exited the shower. A red light on it was blinking, she said. Vasquez went to tell her sister, but when they returned the phone was gone. Kelly later found it in her bedroom.

The sisters removed the MEMORY chip and took it to a Verizon store to see what was on it. They alerted their stepfather, who reported Chi to police.

"I was shocked and felt angry and upset for my daughters when I learned what was on the video," Fornaciari said.

The family is seeking compensatory and punitive damages for alleged fraud, negligent misrepresentation and HIRING, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

A telephone listing could not be located for Chi in Walnut or the surrounding area. The plaintiffs' attorney, Gloria Allred, said she did not know if he had a lawyer.

Removing a memory stick from a cellphone isn't very difficult. It could be that they had it removed at "Verizon".

When i play the game, it give me this message the instruction at "0x50662e62" referenced memory at "0x00e00c08" the memory could not read" Would anyone help me to solve this problem. Thank youYou'll need to post a lot more information than that...

What game are you trying to play? Is it legal? Does this HAPPEN with any other games? Has it ever worked?
Does anything else cause this to happen?
What OS are you using?
What protection software do you have?
What are your hardware specs? Most importantly, your RAM.

Without any other information to go on, the only SUGGESTION I can make is defragmenting and maybe cleaning up a bit with CCleaner (install without Yahoo! toolbar). Also, try reinstalling your game and see if it makes a difference.

Your RAM could be failing, so run MEMTEST for an hour or two (try playing your game while the test is running). Let us know of any errors and get back to us with as much information as possible.Hi CBMATT.
It the game i download from the internet. It was for my kid to play from Maplestory, the name of it is NEXON. This is the first time that i let my kid to play it.
i had xp professional service pack 2, i had panda protection software, two 512 mb with dual channel,it's 1gb.I would go ahead and give my suggestion a try. Clean up a bit with CCleaner. And although I'm not sure how likely it is that there's an infection, it wouldn't hurt to download AVG Free, update it, and run a full scan in SAFE Mode.

If you're still having this problem, use MemTest to test each stick of RAM for an hour, and then both together for an hour. It's a long process, but it runs in the background (kinda) while you use your computer normally, so it shouldn't take too much extra time out of your schedule.I wouldn't run anything while using MemTest...likely to pruduce errors as it needs to address the full address range of the RAM.You shouldn't be running any memory diagnostic software from within Windows or any other OS.. Quote from: patio on April 16, 2007, 07:19:39 AM

My bad, I thought it was common to use the computer normally while running the tests. I've never encountered any problems doing so.Well, I'm not sure if I got this right, but I'm sure it'll do for an explanation at the moment:

Diagnostic software loads itself into the memory and starts diagnosing (the unused?) memory with certain patterns

If you run it from the OS you load the OS, drivers and software into the memory and on top of that the diagnostic memory. It could result in a very inaccurate diagnosis CONSIDERING you're using the memory for other purposes but pure testing.

Professional memory testing is done with an expansion card and not software..

Solve : I can't see usb for mp3?

Answer»

I can't remove my mp3 ( samsung yp t9 ) safely because first of all, I don't see the Safely Remove Hardware icon, secondly, even though I found another way to get to the Safely Remove Hardware,I don't see my mp3 's usb section in it even though it is plugged ( 100% sure it is plugged )
I can transfer files directly through dragging and I guess everything is normal except for the fact that I can not remove the mp3 safely.

Someone give me a solution, thanksShould be hot swappable, just plug it in and out when ever you're done copying. If you find files to be incomplete, uninstall the device and REINSTALL it. Just wondering, do you have flash drive? Does Windows display the Safely Remove Hardware icon when you connect it to your computer?yeah it's a flash drive. The safely remove hardware doesn't appear when I plug it in. I meant a regular flash drive, not an mp3 player. In other words, another USB device to see whether the same thing happens.yeah I can see my USB in the safely remove section when I plug my usb in but just not the mp3another thing that might help is that when I open my computer, Samsung YP T9 belongs to the " Other " section while all the other USB go under the " Devices with Removable Storage" and I just simply right CLICK and "eject" the once that goes under "Device with Removable Storage"
Also, when I double click on the Samsung YP T9 icon, there is this thing CALLED " Samsung YP T9 Storage " in it, then when I double click that, it'll get me into the files I have. ( I still can't eject it )

So I think if I can somehow get that storage onto the Devices with Removable Storage section, I can eject the mp3 safely.Quote from: Raptor on April 14, 2007, 07:44:55 PM

Should be hot swappable, just plug it in and out when ever you're done copying. If you find files to be incomplete, uninstall the device and reinstall it.
To reiterate what Raptor said, you can remove it without causing damage to files by just observing any file transfer and waiting until it's finished before removing it. The Safely Remove Hardware icon is just a systematic way of doing the same thing.

I think you may not be able to resolve this. So, just exercising caution to wait until any file transfer is complete before may removal be the only option for continuing to use that mp3 player with your computer. In this instance i would only remove the device after the machine was fully powered down...

I would take the same PRECAUTIONS when plugging it in as well.

Check with GX1_Man...maybe MP3's can go RAW as well....I may be wrong, but I also believe that this device is hot-swappable. Just do what soybean said and exercise caution when removing the device. You could try reinstalling it, but I have a feeling that it won't make a difference. And, of course, you could try using it on another computer to see if the same thing happens.Does the device appear under "My Computer"?
If it does, you can right click on the device, and click "Eject" to safely remove the device.

Upon further investigation I found that all of my Mp3 & .Jpg files were named as follows: .Mp3.vbs & .jpg.vbs right then & there I knew I was slammed with a VIRUS. Since I built the PC I figured I would just chalk it up as a loss & reformat the drive to WIPE it clean & do a complete fresh install of the os.

I got to the part where it asks you to name the Volume in FDISK but then I saw that the name of the Volume was in characters much like the ones you see on Playing cards.

They Looked like Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs & spades. To this day I STILL have the hard drive but no Idea how to clean it: have tried using it as a Master & also as a slave but I cannot find an application to rename the files in DOS sinceI do not have the characters.

I know the Hard Drive was Manufactures in 2003 & made by samsung & spinpoint series model# SP800H I mostlikely at the time was using Win98se

Some people I taked to at local PC shops thought it may be the I Love You Virus but that's all I know................... Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank in advance?
ID10tWhat exactly is your problem? You want us to identify a virus that is probably long gone?

Past tense, you see. I would like to re-use the hard drive as back up data or to be able to re-install OS so it can function as a normal Hard drive again.

Problem is I can't do anything till I am able to Format the drive & re-install OS
I am basically Locked out..............

Without the ability to rename the Volume name I can't do anything due to the volume being renamed as characters that I do not have ie: hearts, clubs, spades, diamonds etc..?

Any Suggestions

There would be no logical reason for using these characters for a disk volume name if in fact it would even take them...

Solve : JkDefrag?

Answer»

Free (released under the GNU General Public License) disk defragment and optimize utility for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64. Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with TWO optimization strategies, and can handle floppies and USB disks/sticks. Included are a Windows VERSION, a commandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), and versions for Windows X64.

http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/Very, very useful.
Thanks a lot.Looks interesting but I'm still wondering why switch from Windows Disk Defragmenter? The comment on that website that JkDefrag handles floppies and USB disks/sticks implies that Windows Disk Defragmenter can not handle them. But, it certainly does. And, as far as speed goes, my OS partition will usually defrag in under 3 minutes. OK, an update.
I have used JKDefrag, and it rocks.
The advantages that I can see, compared to the built in Windows defrag, are that it is faster(the default option is anyway, the quick one), defragments more efficiently (the more involved option that takes a little longer), and has more options.
It requires no installation either and is free, so it's worth a look.It does sound interesting. I may give it a try. My hard drive is partitioned (6 total) with both FAT32 and NTFS partitions, since I have a Win 98SE/Win XP dual boot configuration. Have you used it on both FAT32 and NTFS partitions?Just NTFS, I have no FAT32 partitions anywhere.
Just a note: I recommend using the command line options.
I created a SHORTCUT to the main program with the option "-a4" which does the best defragment.
There are other options (check the site for details) which you may want to add, as once you start the program it starts defragmenting, you can't configure it.
It also defragments all of your drives/partitions by default, and skips removable drives.
I noticed when I looked at the log, I thought it would just do one but it defragmented C and then skipped my DVD drives D and E.Sounds interesting. I think I will try it. I could use it during my screen SAVER time. (As long as it doesn't interrupt my games)

Whats with the messed up GUI?

[old attachment deleted by admin]COL. Yeah, that's almost enough to keep me away from it.Most people just leave it in the background, I imagine, so who cares how it looks? Yeah, but why is it operating like that?
Its a bit weird...EH, it got the job done. Personally, I couldn't care less how something looks, as long as it works.
It works, therefore I am happy.
If it didn't work, or the way it looked interfered with me using it, I wouldn't be happy.
Besides, I like the look of it.I use PowerDefragmenter (+ GUI) from Microsoft /SysinternalsI tend to just use JKDefrag (used to use Windows defragmenter) every so often (maybe once every few days) and use DIRMS once a week as part of my weekly maintenance.
Works for me.

Sometimes I want to insert an image in my new post/reply, but I can't figure out the syntax to use. I click the icon which says Insert Image, and I put img=path\file.jpg (or .PNG) in-between the code block, sometimes I put img_src=path\file.jpg (or .png). Nothing is inserted. Thanks in advance.Do you want to insert an image from your hard drive or from a web source?

To insert an image from your computer/hard drive, you need to insert an attachment. To do that, click on "Attachments and other options" below the forum message panel, click the Browse button to the right of the box labeled "Attach:", and navigate to the image and select it. Do not use the Insert Image button to insert an image from your hard drive.

To insert an image from a web source, such as photobucket.com, you can use the Insert Image feature. I'll see if I can demonstrate. Code: [Select]

NOTE: I did not insert " width=480 height=640" after img; the forum did that when I clicked on Preview. Thanks for your GUIDANCE. It's from a network drive. I was able to include an attachment (I thought) in this reply, but when I clicked on Preview, nothing showed up.
Testing this again to see if it works yet.

Yes it worked. I GUESS I was expecting to see the actual image when I previewed it. The attachment does not show up until you post it.

Solve : Protect your computer in a severe Thunderstorm?

Some places have received warnings of server Thunders tons.

To prevent damage to any expensive equipment, you must unplug each device for the durati0on of the storm.
Power strips with surge protectors a near worthless in a severe storm if a bolt comes even close to you house. Unless you live underground.

Quote

The energy of an average 3 mile-long lightning strike is one billion to ten billion joules. To keep a 100-watt light bulb going for one second, one hundred joules of energy will be used.

Be careful if you live in an area where serve storms are predicted.
Also unplug outdoor TV antennas, cable TV/Internet cables and PHONE lines from equipment. Basically anything that comes in from outside your house. This is why i have considered adding a fiber bridge between broadband modem and router, but due to the cost to do so and improbability of a direct hit, I just haven't and just rely on data redundant practices to not have a single point or location of total data loss. I also have everything powered through UPS as well as the coax is PASSED through a suppressor, although if a direct hit that vaporizes the suppressor, its possible to still burn stuff up further down the line as well as what is a gap of a burned trace that is less than an inch from input to output of the SUPRESSOR when the lightning probably already traveled a few miles to strike, and most lightning bolts are not a single strike, but as many as 30 pulses that are too fast for your eye to count the flashes, and so the first pulse can blow the suppressor vaporizing a trace and the other 29 pulses arc across this 1 inch gap and head down stream to all your equipment.

For the most part the hardware can be replaced, but the data is the most important thing to protect. And so data itself should be protected more than the hardware through proper practices of data REDUNDANCY. Since the hardware that is cooked can be replaced with a similar system and access the original data without problems.Quote from: camerongray on December 11, 2014, 05:30:34 AM

Worth repeating. Many people still have outdoor TV antennas. And the surge devices the phone company has are for their PROTECTION. Not to protect your things. We had a tech come to our house and install a satellite dish and he did not install a grounding device. Wonder where he got his training.

I'm interested to know what you folks think of this business that Google is so keen on pushing.

The system needs to be better, mostly better managed to make sure that there is no misuse, however I cant see there being a permanent fix to this issue as for the longer that a security measure is out there, the more time HACKERS have to pick at it and find a flaw in its design or a flaw in the methods involved in distribution of certificates.

For this to be successful, it needs to constantly evolve and certificates should probably expire sooner than later in which new hopefully better certificates are issued and there is a cleanup process of outstanding certificates which are deactivated if not in use etc.

Additionally while it could probably be spoofed somehow, i feel that certificates should be tested regularly to verify that the servers that are hosting the content that they are using remains on the better part of the internet vs the shady side of it. Location of use should be established and monitored, and when a change has been made to location of servers, it should get flagged in which it should be verified that the servers that are associated with the certificate are still GOOD and not a clone mimic of a real site or containing scripts that are bad etc. While flagged as a change has been detected users connecting to that site should get a yellow warning that the authenticity of the site they are at is in question, use with caution basically. Any real sites out there would want to resolve this measure as quickly as possible to be back in the green trusted zone, while those that do not follow up remain in the yellow and eventually lose their certificate.Thank you for your thoughts on the issue, DaveLembke.

Anybody else with thoughts they'd like to share with us?

Solve : Server down time 12/2/2004?

Answer»

Unfortunately as many of you probably noticed the server and forums were down for several hours this morning. This was an unexpected outage that took way too long to get fix, and I apologize for that. I am looking into getting a new host since this long of an outage should not happen. If any of you are familiar with any hosts, I am open to any suggestions. Alan has suggested http://www.bluehost.com/ that LOOKS very promising, and I am also considering http://www.100tb.com, who is a local company. What do you do in terms of hosting at the moment (e.g. Shared Hosting, VPS, Dedicated Server).

If you are on shared hosting I'd highly recommend getting some SORT of VPS, there are a lot of small companies that offer them as well as much larger ones such as Digital Ocean and Linode. With a VPS you do have to set everything up yourself but it means that you then know how everything works, so short of the network or host behind it going down you can fix issues with stuff on the VPS (webserver/database server) yourself rather than relying on someone else to do it.Is this company near you?

Solve : Cloned SSD to a HDD for Windows 7 system - heavily fragmented & more?

Answer»

So I decided that I wanted to move my SSD from my prior gaming system to my new gaming system, but I didnt want to have to reinstall the OS back to the old system, and so I bought a Unitek Y-3023 SATA drive dock/duplicator and took a same capacity HDD and placed that into this duplicator with the SSD as the Master in Slot A and the HDD as Slave in Slot B.

This drive duplicator didnt work for the offline duplication as for maybe it didnt like the SSD to HDD clone process. So I then went on the search for a software utility that could achieve this for free and tried Corsair SSD Toolbox as seen here: http://www.corsair.com/en-us/blog/2013/may/the-corsair-ssd-toolbox BUT there is just about no info out there to assist with this software and after the clone was complete it just would say "Succeed" with option for [OK]. When placing the HDD into the old system which should be an exact clone to the SSD, it detected the HDD but missing OS.

Looking back at this HDD it had no drive letter assignment and so I tried to fix the issue by giving it a letter assignment with the dock connected to netbook via USB connection and then place it back into the old gaming system and once again still Missing OS.

I then went on the hunt for another clone software replacement which was free to use and found a tool SHOWN on a youtube video called AOMEI Backupper Standard Edition 2.1.0 http://www.backup-utility.com/free-backup-software.html and decided to try this software out after first scanning for virus and malware etc. It came up clean and so after making sure it was clean and installing it I performed a drive to drive clone with this utility and use of the dual SATA drive USB dock connected to the netbook running XP Home SP3. After about 1 hr and 15 minutes the drive was cloned, and it looked like it should work.

So I installed the HDD and booted the old gaming system up and Windows came up stating that there was an error and that a system repair disk should be run on it. Located the Windows 7 Repair DVD that I burned a few years ago and booted the system off of that disc and performed the repair and COOL... Windows 7 is now working on the cloned drive, but far slower than expected.

The system stated that there was a hardware change and it needed to reboot, so I rebooted it. On the boot up after reboot started it seemed as if the system was acting way slower than it should have. HDD activity was more active than normal and so I went looking first to see if there was any fragmentation and sure enough it was heavily FRAGMENTED at 18%

So I defragmented the HDD and performance got much better.

When it comes to cloning drives its usually a bit for bit based on the data location from one to another drive to have an exact copy of the master. I am guessing that this bit for bit clone placed data on the HDD that was as it was indexed in order by the SSD and so it placed the data on the HDD from the SSD fragmented.

On top of this for some reason the HDD was named Copy of F: by running this clone utility so I will have to go and rename it.

Through this process I learned that:

- For some reason Windows 7 doesnt like the drive cloned from SSD to HDD and a repair was needed to get this drive to function properly to boot the system.

- Offline clone doesnt work with the Unitek Y-3023 between this SSD and HDD of same capacity

- Expect Fragmentation of data on the HDD when cloning from SSD to HDD.

- Corsair SSD Toolbox clone utility is seriously lacking support documentation and the clone utility didnt work correctly between Corsair brand Force Series SSD and HDD.

- AOMEI Backupper Standard 2.1.0 worked to transfer the image to the HDD from the SSD, however the Windows installation may need to be repaired with a Windows 7 Repair disc.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I could have cloned this drive by using the built in Windows 7 image utility, BUT the problem here is that this requires a drive that contains the image separate to that of the drive that would be made into an exact clone. From my experience working with this Windows 7 image utility feature, while it works very well to create and restore from images, it requires another drive for the image to be placed onto. So this feature is really intended for use with making a system recovery backup image to be placed onto say an external USB connected HDD, but the image then copied from the external HDD to the original HDD and so the external drive is only an upload/download system recovery data drive vs one that can be placed into the computer internally and able to run. So instead of having to use a 3rd drive as the upload/download location for images, i decided to instead go with a direct clone method.

I was really hoping that this drive duplicator was going to be a quick easy way to duplicate like capacity drives without much trouble, but that wasn't the case here. Maybe if I had 2 same drives, same make/model it would have worked out better vs 2 different brands and 2 different types.

- For some reason Windows 7 doesnt like the drive cloned from SSD to HDD

Evidently Windows 7 reacted the same way as I did when I read the title - insert "you're doing it wrong" picture here

I've always used Macrium Reflect to clone my drives if needed and never had a problem moving between drives of different capacity, at worst I've had to resize the partition which I've always done with GParted and encountered no problems at all.

Edit: also meant to add that you're right, if an exact copy is made then the HDD will be heavily fragmented as the SSD controller will place data spread across the SSD's flash to even out writes etc. As fragmentation doesn't affect an SSD in the same way as a HDD and the OS can't control where the data goes anyway, any exact copy will inevitably be fragmented. Something to bear in mind that might not be obvious for anyone else doing this, so thanks for sharing. I suppose it might even be worth defragmenting the drive from another system, using something like Mydefrag (formerly JKDefrag, other software is available) to thoroughly defragment the drive before use to ensure it performs as well as a HDD can.Quote
I've always used Macrium Reflect to clone my drives if needed and never had a problem moving between drives of different capacity, at worst I've had to resize the partition which I've always done with GParted and encountered no problems at all.

* Thanks for reminding me... I forgot to add this detail... I attempted to use Macrium Reflect first before these other methods, but because it was installed once prior about a year ago and the 30-day trial ran out on it, it wouldnt allow for me to use it again on this same build. It appeared to leave its signature on the registry somewhere and so even when uninstalling and reinstalling a new copy of the 30-day trial it came up and TOLD me I had 0-days left and I would have to buy it. So thats why I went the alternate route.

I cloned this system once prior with Macrium as I believe you suggested about 2 or 3 years ago here when I was complaining about Ghost 2003 not working with Windows 7, and it definitely was better than the AOMEI backupper. Had I not blown my opportunity to use Macrium on this build to image it, I definitely would have gone with that instead.

I started nodding off as I was typing this initial post the other night and so looking back at it now, I am glad that it makes sense although lengthy...LOL There is a free version of Macrium available, for the average user there's no difference between free and standard but a full comparison is available at the bottom of this page - http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

When you tried to reinstall it were you not able to use the free version? Was it a case of once you'd taken the trial and it ran out you didn't have that option? I've never taken up the trial option so I can't say with certainty whether it'll allow you to install the free version once the trial runs out but that would seem like quite an oversight. I do remember helping someone whose system got stuck in Avast's rescue mode when their Avast trial ran out though so it's definitely not impossible for oversights like that to happen, RECOVERING from that wasn't much fun.I checked out the free version website and it only has a download from cnet without a direct download for the software. Looks like they want me to install a download downloader to get it

Maybe I will download the download downloader with a crappy system I have to try to get the Free edition that way. Definitely dont want to have any junk installed as a service on this system etc.

Frustrating how many companies out there are ditching direct clean downloads and now they want you to install some downloader to download their software or even worse there are check boxes to pay extreme attention to when installing software to make sure that a tool bar or antivirus is not slipped into your system upon an installation from Adobe's site etc.

The Macrium Reflect version I had tried was from my collection of software that I have that I refer to when i need to install software or reinstall software without having to download new copies each time. So I didnt try the new Free edition, and I guess back when I downloaded the Free edition it either was the Free edition with a check box for trial time for the PREMIUM that got checked or wasnt the free version but instead the trial version that broke after 30 days.

In regards as to if the Free Version wouldnt work after the Trial Version was up.... if I had a spare drive to try this out on, I would, but I think I will have to state that for now, this would be unanswered. Only spare drives I have are IDE and the original drive is SATA. And while the image could fit on a 160GB IDE drive, it just doesnt make much sense to go through the trouble to place that image onto an IDE HDD. Try downloading Macrium from Filehippo instead of cnet - http://filehippo.com/download_macrium_reflect/
The download link there gives you "reflect_dl.exe" which in turns downloads and installs the actual program, that's the way I have installed it and it's definitely safe, no junkware included as sneaky checkboxes or anything either.the cnet download is reflectdl.exe, which is the Macrium download tool.

The purpose of the tool is so they can provide different installation packages for different licenses, Windows Versions and architectures, I think. It is not from cnet, however- it's not, say, a cnet downloader they slapped in-between.

They basically have two such download tools- they look identical, but the "Full" downloader let's you choose between the full version or the trial (with the former requiring a license key), whereas the free version allows a Free option.

I have been using the Free Edition for some time. When I swapped out a 750GB HDD in my old system for an SSD, I used macrium to create an image of the 750GB Drive first, When I moved to this PC, I imaged that SSD I was using in my previous system using it, and then wiped the SSD for use in the new system. So I have two HDD images which I mount when I think I may want files or data that I had on one of those drives.

The mounting is quite exceptional. I just right-click the image file, select to mount, and choose a few options (such as making the entire thing writable, preventing the common requirement to take ownership from when you slave the drive for example), and then it appears as a fully mounted and accessed Drive Letter that has the exact contents of the drive image.Have to say I didn't check what cnet was offering, I have just always downloaded Macrium from Filehippo as I know it's clean and I generally avoid Cnet. I agree the way Macrium mounts images is great, makes browsing for specific files to reference or restore very easy indeed.

Where I LIVE there is reliable Internet service, but bad plain telephone service. We have a cell phone, but we need to have a house phone. The regular wired house phone goes out whenever we have heavy rain. This has gone on for about 12 years. Money s an issue, we live on our Social Security and little extra.
So we have been thinking VOICE over Interpret.

Solve : Transferring files from Vista HD to Windows 7 HD?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently ACQUIRED a laptop that is running Windows 7, and my older PC is running Windows Vista. What is the best way to transfer my program files from my Vista hard drive to my Windows 7 hardrive?

Thanks!Well the programs may be copyright and protected. Best method would be to use original software to install FRESH to the newer laptop with 7 and just not use both at the same time to stay legal. Its not just a matter of copying directly the programs from program files, but also 99% of the software out there require registry keys.

One thing I have done in the PAST was create a image of an older system and then open that image on the newer system as a virtual machine. You then have access to both systems from one system, but making this WORK takes an advanced user. Also Windows OS is not transferable, but as LONG as you retain the older system and leave it powered off while the virtual machine of it is live no foul. But this is on the edge or legal and illegal as for the OS etc is non transferable.DaveLembke is right. You can not just simply copy files over.
There are things out there that claim to do it, but the do not work well.
As for you personal data, photos and documents, just put them on a USB stick.
Your browser may have a way to export bookmarks and passwords. Likewise with your e-mail client. Or if your e-mail is web based, there is no issue.

But you can not just copy most windows programs, with the exception of those that are 'portable'.

Thanks for the replies guys!

Solve : iPod Shuffle 2nd gen will not sync in iTunes 12?

Answer»

I just got an iPod Shuffle 2nd gen and I cannot get it to be recognized in iTunes 12. My computer does see it. I also have an iPod NANO 5G and iPod Touch in iTunes as WELL. My computer is running Windows 7 Service Pack 1.Edit: after speaking with an Apple Store employee, I was told the iPod Shuffle was a KNOCKOFF product and iTunes does not work with an non-Apple device, but I was able to get music from other sources on the device. This PROBLEM is solved.

Solve : reading from external portable drive?

Answer»

I have a 1.8 tb portable drive that I want to play on my set top BOX but will not recognise movies in either ntfs or FAT32 but my 500gb ntfs works fine. is there anyway to make my set top box read from 1.8tb portable drive. e.g. partitions or something like thatQuote

but will not recognise movies in either ntfs or fat32 but my 500gb ntfs works fine

Doesnt, but Does?

I have a bluray PLAYER that can play movies through a portable drive, BUT unfortunately it only supports FAT32 and so I am stick with a maximum of 32GB.

One way around the limitation I had with the 32GB was to turn my one computer into a media server and with the service broadcasting on my local LAN, I then am able to navigate to this service and then navigate through the menu system as PART of this service running on my computer which has more than 32GB of data to view and its in NTFS with no problems. *The only problem I ran into with this is that not all video formats were supported through the media server to my bluray.

This is the software that works perfect with my setup.

http://www.wildmediaserver.com/will revert to ntfs I guess it is a software issue with the set top box as it cant read LARGE external drives. up to 500gig okay but above that not able to read it.

thanks

Solve : Facebook Issue?

Can anyone tell me why I am receiving email notifications for a facebook account that doesn't belongs to it? It does use my email address, but I have not made that account. What is happening? It sounds like a facebook phishing scam. DO NOT OPEN E-Mail ( Just delete it ).

They SEND this out in hopes that you will click on the link in the e-mail and unknowingly logon to their fake facebook server and then a hacker quickly uses this information at the real facebook site and takes ownership of your account and with this control can then spam others on friends list with anything they chose to do so as well as any sites that have facebook passthrough authentication they also would have the ability to access and steal information etc or hold it for ransom with a monetary demand to give you it back.

Some facebook accounts that I have heard compromised in the past have even had false damaging information posted such as stating that the person is coming out of the closet, starting fights with friends posting hateful information, etc and far worse. When I first tried to make my facebook account through that email address, it says that the email address was already used. So this is probably not a phishing scam ( I think so). It was 1 years ago. But I haven't found any one using my email address. (Last account activity always shows the time I was using). So what's going on.. QUOTE from: zzzabc on December 21, 2014, 12:39:55 AM

So, you used a different email address, than the one you're referring to in your POST, to create your facebook account, and that email address is still the address associated with your account. I that right? Yes.
Someone has make their facebook account through my gmail address. But I don't know how was that possible. It was long time ago. There was no notifications before. I haven't seen any message saying my facebook account was created in that email. I was receiving some notifications lately.. like birthday notifications and so on.

And is it safe to reset password for such account. I WANT to find out who made it and disable the account.Quote from: zzzabc on December 21, 2014, 12:44:49 PM

The only WAY I can see that happening is that whoever did that had your gmail password and could access your gmail account. I suggest you change the password to that account if you haven't done so since this whole episode began. Once you've done that, I'd try gaining access to that facebook account by using the Forget Password procedure, which should trigger an email being sent to your gmail account since it's the account associated with that facebook account. And, if you can access that facebook account, you should be able to delete it. Noone can setup an account using your GMail addy unless they know all your contact info and password...Period.But here's the problem. I can't reset the password. Have a look at the screenshot

That facebook account is not mine. But has been created through my email address ( I am receiving notifications lately and I can't create facebook account through that email address). And I can't reset the password using this email address. What's going on?
