Solve : i need to reinstall everio mediabrowser hd edition that supports JVC camcorder G?

Answer»

I need to reinstall everio mediabrowser hd edition that originally came with my JVC camcorder GZHM 330

None of the LINKS on the jvc websites are letting me download the mediabrowser. Even if it did download, there are so many different versions of everio mediabrowser that I'm confused which one to try .

Plus a LOT of sites that are offering the download are asking for payment after a free scan etc. They then ask you to register. Which I'm finding out really means a payment.

I know the everio mediabrowser was a free install, but a store technician loaded it onto my laptop when I bought the camcorder.

How do I reinstall the mediabrowser. It BECOME uninstalled unintentionally when I uninstalled heaps of programs to speed up my laptop.

No Installation Disc – It’s built into Everio*Because it's built right into the Everio camera itself*, the new Everio MediaBrowser 3 can be installed directly on your PC right after connecting via USB. No CD required!

Thanks for the reply but How do I reinstall the mediabrowser. Perhaps you might want to go back to the store technician-he should have given you a copy of the software to keep.
I noticed that the first version is available as a free download: http://www.downloadplex.com/Windows/Audio-Multimedia/Collection-Manager/everio-mediabrowser_332254.htmlQuote from: Transfusion on January 09, 2012, 09:54:46 PM

What a mega dogs breakfast this whole thing is.

I rang JVC support last Friday but got only a message service to say they are unavailable. Days later haven't even emailed back to me or phoned.

And Harvey Norman where I bought the camera have just told me to ring JVC.

I actually have this Everio media browser installed on one of my PC but have not actually use the software. It can still be used and recognize as a USB media storage device when plugged in. Hello, I can help you (hopefully) it's been a while since you posted the question, do you still need help or is it resolved? let me know.

It's been over a Year...I'm actually in need of the Everio MediaBrowser software, after a computer crash, and I cannot locate the DVD. Can someone make this available online please?

Max...SOLVED!

I had the same problem as the OP. Had uninstalled the MediaBrowser 3 software but wanted to install it again...

So here's what I did to get it back...

1. Connect the USB to the camera and to the computer.

2. Windows 7 has the pop up with Options to auto-play, view files etc..
so I chose to "open the folder to view the files".

IMPORTANT: Make sure to open the folder in the drive called "JVCCAM_APP" and not "JVCCAM_SD"

3. When inside the JVCCAM_APP folder, you'll see the "install.exe" file.
Double click and the software will start to install.

Hope this helps. Btw, it's new year's eve so, hope this makes someone happier for the new year!

Solve : Thought I had a PSU issue, but I guess its normal for core voltage to change?

Answer»

Finally got my newest gaming system all built.

Found out that sleep mode causes BSOD and so I disabled sleep mode. Other than that it runs fine and FAST

I decided to run CPUZ to see what the voltages were reporting etc and while running CPUZ I saw my core voltage swing from .937 Volts to 1.425 Volts with voltages in between these values changing about once every few seconds.

I decided to save the information to text file and look at the raw data collected from CPUZ and thats when it caught my eye that this is normal and not a power supply or VRM issue.

I figured I'd share this here in case anyone else doesnt know that this is normal for different power states based on an AMD Cool'n Quiet config like I am running to underclock and undervoltage the CPU when processing demands are lower.

Solve : How to create search facility to find previous customer details in excel??

Answer»

I have a PAGE where the customer can enter their details of a previous quote like their name, address, quote ID etc and then I want the sheet to search another sheet to find the full set of details from their quote.
Is this possible? Do I need to create a form or can it be done in the sheet?
I need full details of how to do it please?
Thanks in advance.Your CUSTOMERS have access to 'your' excel spreadsheets?

Usually something like this is done through a form which is browser / web based and references to a database to search for information from. The spreadsheet is to be used by the sales assistants only. This part of the process is just to save time if the customer has used the company before so no need to enter details again or to recover their previous quote/order. So could I use a form in Excel to find the details after they have entered a couple to distinguish them from other customers? What would you recommend? ThanksHave you ever considered an Access Database? With Access you can have an interface that your sales assistant would use and they could simply enter in the customers name or other information and find the customer quickly within seconds or less depending on size of database.

In years past I use to support Napa Tracs a software package that gave automotive garages the ability to track inventory, automobiles, warranties, customers, etc and this product worked very well. Many garages prior to this were trying to get by with excel spreadsheets and it was a big mess.

Depending on what your making quotes for you might find a software product out there that can avoid you from having to reinvent the wheel, although if you want a highly customized database Access is the way to go if you already have it as part of your MS Office package.I must use excel, its a school project only USING excel. I am fully aware of how much easier excel is to use.Quote

The spreadsheet is to be used by the sales assistants only.

Giving false indication that this is for commercial use

and then

Now we find out its a school project.

Since this is an Excel Project for school, and no option for a better method, I would suggest looking into VBA for Excel. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/ee814737%28v=office.14%29.aspx

Many many code examples out there on the web to learn technique and build your own code from. The best way to learn this is to do it the hard way which is to research and code up your own code. Then if you have a code example and need further assistance. Share your code with us and we can point you in the correct direction.

Curious was this project by choice or given to all students to work on? Are you suppose to be going into VBA to pull this off?

This would be pulled off much better with Access even though you cant use it, although if your allowed to use Excel & Access you could use VBA that references the Access Database from within Excel.I have already TRIED visual basic.
I will try elsewhere where the "Guru" isn't as rude or someone who actually wants to help. I am willing to help, and thought that I did by pointing you in the right direction.

It comes down to We Wont do your Homework for you; BUT we will assist if you provide a code example that needs clarification.

Your not going to do well on this education path if you expect everyone else to do your work for you

Wow... I have been assisting with online forums for over 10 years and first time being called rude, and didnt think I was. Oh well a first time for everything I suppose Quote from: brumney65 on January 02, 2015, 11:53:41 AM

Solve : Need Help Finding Computer Log/Browser History?

Answer»

I need help FINDING out computer activity potentially as specific as web sites visited at a certain exact time on a certain exact day in the past. I have, of course, since this day and time; performed a browser cache clear deleting files, completed a disk cleanup of the C, and even used my virus protector to clean out files, etc. I'm assuming I even performed these functions immediately after the time I was looking to go BACK to, therefore, I'm not sure system restore is an option although it's a possibility if that would actually recover such data. Please help! Thanks!

NOTE: I am still running on Windows XP.System restore only deals with Windows files...
That being stated what exactly are you after...and why ? ?
Oddly enough; I'm trying to prove to my X or maybe still girlfriend that I was home a certain night and that the sound she heard of a voice mail I left for her was audio from a web site on my computer..........not some woman I was hanging out with.
I'm hoping to specifically see what web sites I visited or pages on a certain day at a certain time. I was home the whole night. I know I cooked dinner that night too which took me quite some time from prep cooking, cooking it, eating, then cleaning up after. I also attempted the index.dat file readings. I was able to read them, but there were only two for that day at 5 a.m. when I was asleep. I have no idea if that program runs on another timezone possibly. Most days times were messed up so....that option is done.If you made any Google searches during that time, and have your Google ACCOUNT's browser history enabled, you should be able to find that query. If you searched for something like "funny girl prank mp3", it has to be enough to chill your GF.

Solve : New Firfox 35 from Mozilla?

Answer»

You can get it from the Mozilla.org site. But it you are doing Firefox, likely it already did the download for you anyway.
The NEW version claims to be more secure and will give better performance. YET there is not need to upgrade unless you just WANT too. If you do not want the automatic upgrade, you have to go into advanced options and find the UPDATE tab. There you will have to uncheck the automatic update.
Version 33.1 is my preference, and you can revert backs OP it by finding a download of that older version. It is available from other sites as well as Mozilla.

Solve : Camera resolution?

Answer»

I have SANYO SCP-3100 camera picture quality is 640 X 480 is this equal to less than 1/3 MEGAPIXEL.640 * 480 = 307,200 pixels

307,200 * 3 = 921,600 pixels

921,600 is less than 1 megapixel (which is around 1,000,000 pixels).

So yes, 640x480 RESOLUTION is less than 1/3rd of a megapixel.Quote from: camerongray on January 17, 2015, 07:36:50 AM

I didn't dig up a whole bunch of information on this phone but you may not be able to (by default) Read/Write to the internal storage on this DEVICE with your computer (internal storage isn't the same as removable storage). Using the phone you can move the files to the SD Card. That's where the SD Card comes into play and not just as extra space. Once you put an SD Card in the phone it should show up in 'My Computer' as a removable storage device and you can move files to and from the phone by USB. Or use Bluetooth to transfer them to another device.I have tried that

Thank you for your help.We don't usually do homework here.Im asking for guidance.
If anyone know which process come first.
does the CPU starts with interrupts and HEADS to the RAM \ HDD?
or am i mistakenUpon initial boot the BIOS performs checks of the motherboard prior to the OS booting.

CPU TEST is prior to RAM test, and RAM test is prior to HDD test. There are others in between as well and so you will want to do some research.

Solve : Compiler?

Answer»

I want to know where I can study basics about compiler. I am having this subject in my SEMESTER so want to learn C compiler thoroughly. Plz help. I have a book of compiler DESIGN of Aho. But its little bit hard. I want to learn it fully. This is an odd request as for usually people are learning a programming language in college etc and its techniques and programming methods learned. The compilers are generally just a tool as part of an IDE that takes the program you wrote that is in a FORM easily read and understood by humans and it spits out a compiled binary of that program that is in the language that the computer understands and runs with.

So your actually taking a course that is on 'just' compilers for C and their internal workings and what they do?

Which compiler design book are you using?Well simply put, compilers just turns what ever programing language via c, c++, vb, noms on it, turns into binary 1's & 0's and plops out a exe. I am using Compiler Design -- Compiler Principles, Techniques and Tools by Aho,Seth
Try to read Advanced Compiler Design and Implementation by Steven Muchnick (Author) Where is your school? They should have a set of TEXTBOOKS RECOMMENDED for your course.

Solve : Bluray player?

Answer»

I am trying to reconnect my Magnavox MBP 5120 blu-ray player to my Linksys WRT120N routers wifi (which I have done before without trouble) and I am getting DHCP cannot be acquired. I have change the IP ADDRESS to manual on the blu-ray player without changing the IP address itself and no error. I have checked the routers settings and DHCP is enabled. Is there a way to FIX this? I had it connected just fine so I added the ip/mac address to the DHCP Reservation think that would help it did not. Thia is the player http://www.walmart.com/ip/15080510?www=true&productRedirect=true. and here is proof of the error http://tinypic.com/r/nozwi1/8
From your post it seems it was working and now it does not.
Error messages are not always y ACCURATE. A router will provide DHCP service to any WIRELESS client in range that attempts to make connection.
What did you change?
What did you add or remove?
Wi-Fi devices may fail fora number of reasons.
A. Component failure. The unit has to go back to the factory.
B. Configuration changes. Any body plaything with the device may have changed settings.
C. Severe interference from another device, such as a cell phone at close range.

If it were me, I would take tit to a friend's house and SEE if it works on their system.
But if the device is still in warranty, I would consider sending it back. I did not change anything, did not add/remove anything.
I was just on it conected fine no errors turned the player off and back on and will not connect and gives error

Solve : help with learning?

Answer»

hello,

I'm a student on a secondary school in Holland, and I recently started trying to learn how a computer works, and in particular the the cpu and its main components, the hardware side of the computer. I would like to have some advice on how to start learning and where to begin like what books are good to read or what topics i could use. It is for a school PROJECT i could choose my self, and I am really instrested in how it works but I just dont know where to start. The project is about how the cpu works, so what happens inside the cpu when you try to light a LED with an input signal like a button.
For first i hope that you know that you will be able understant only principles, CPU are MASSIVE COMPLEX beasts.
Your first steps should be into basic digital circuits, there are plenty of books and even youtube videos (or free online courses) and if you are really intrested i would suggest to buy some kits, or just plain chips and try to build some simple things. (Of course there are simulators but real hardware is fun and can give you much more motivation) If you want to have from TIME to time some help then send me a pm with skype, mail or whatever. That would be great, i'll send you some information in the morning. I got some hardware as well, an arduino due i though which i was able to borrow from someone.

Solve : Bit Coins & Bit Coin Hardware?

Answer»

Looking at deals at newegg this caught my eye as unusual. I didnt know that hardware specific for bitcoin mining was being sold out there. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA68020W5714&cm_re=BitCrane_T-110S-_-9SIA68020W5714-_-Product

Personally I feel that if money was really to be made mining bitcoins, then wouldnt everyone be doing it? Anyone out there mined in the past to share on this subject. Also i have seen tons of sites out there offering software to turn your computer into a bit coin miner and these so called POOLS where groups of random members farm with teamed processing power and then the so called honest site when a bit coin is farmed will share the value of it with the members whose computers were farming them in which what type of auditing is going on to protect these people in the pools from basically donating their computers processing power and not getting anything in return for the wasted electricity and wear on their system.

Are there any that are trusted out there or is it the wild west of the internet where there are many thieves among a potentially profitable gold mining venture if you are not taken advantage of?It's the Wild West...

Tread carefully...many who have bought such PC's will never get enough coins to RECOUP their investment. Thanks Patio for your input on this. I have no plans to farm them, nor buy a box for $700 just to crunch them out.

... want a great deal on a bridge? It's a big risk. the values fluctuate massively. Nowadays it is very hard to mine bitcoins in a cost effective manner, people starting now are trying to get into it based on all the success stories from years ago when it was much easier.

Devices like that use ASICs - Special chips designed purely for calculating the hashes that Bitcoin mining requires - This makes them extremely fast since that is all the chip is designed to do. In fact, nowadays for Bitcoin at least, they are the only viable option, the days of GPU and CPU mining are long gone. That said, the time that it would take nowadays to break even is very high and it is extremely hard to predict what will happen to the value in that time.Better off using those resources for Folding...or SETI.... Personally I feel that if money was really to be made mining bitcoins, then wouldnt everyone be doing it?

The days of being able to profitably mine Bitcoin, or many other coins, without a big risky investment have long since come and gone. Those that jumped on the bandwagon near the start and hit it hard, then kept the coins until the prices rose, have made a fortune - just like the stock market really. That's not to say there isn't still money to be made in mining but it's riskier than it was and requires a lot of research before wading in.Thanks everyone for the feedback on this subject.

Did you get that wireless bridge working between you and neighbor?

BTW... I know its not that bridge you were referring to.. I'm still of the mind that Bitcoin is a pyramid scheme.

1. Early adopters buy bitcoins at relatively low initial prices.
2. Early adopters publicize bitcoin to get more adopters and raise demand.
3. More people wanting bitcoin raises demand, The price goes up, and the early adopters cash out.
4. The second wave of people does the same thing.
5. Repeat until the price drops by HALF in the span of a day because of a single individual performing certain transactions to change the price
to make it a buyers market to buy more bitcoins, and those people who took out loans to "invest" are screwed, and the miners are screwed as a result because their once-profitable operation is now in the red and costs more to run than it makes back in bitcoins.

The reason I am of the mind that it is a pyramid scheme is because it has all the requisites. Only a subset of people at the top actually get out of it with a positive net effect. Everybody else get's pretty much screwed, but as you go down the pyramid you find each level trying to screw with the one below.Quote

I agree with you here, and thats the main reason why i never farmed them when this first started, but its surprising that it hasnt topled yet, and more and more places are accepting them as valid forms of payment. I downloaded Libre Office today on a new computer for a client and at their site right at the download it PROMPTS for you to make a donation if you wish, and one of the options was to make a donation using bitcoin.

Usually when a company "takes bitcoin" it's partly for the PUBLICITY- a lot of the bitcoin folks are the Anarcho-capitalist type who are convinced that the world's financial infrastructure is going to collapse anyday now and a decentralized, unregulated currency is a solution somehow- being able to "pretend" to be on their side can cause them to be very loyal customers.

I say "pretend" because when a company takes bitcoin they almost always have simply consigned an intermediary to convert bitcoins directly to USD (or an applicable currency) for them.

Solve : Found this gem of a CPU on ebay .... surprised people want it?

Answer»

Was looking to see if there was any deals on the AMD FX8350, and saw this one here that someone bought. Tried to force the CPU in the wrong way bending and breaking off pins. And then they listed it on ebay and 8 people have bid so far on it for like $51.

Question I have is, does anyone know of a way to repair for missing pins that were snapped off?

I have been lucky with getting some second or third hand CPU's given to me in the past that had a few bent pins that I was able to straighten out and get to fit into a motherboards cpu socket to make a functional system, but if there are pins busted off, I am not aware of any repair kit etc to replace snapped off pins.

My guess is that these people bidding on this have no idea that there are missing pins that are missing from being damaged or there may be a way to fix missing pins that I am unaware of...

Sure there are pins that are intentionally missing by design, but in the picture I THINK I see 2 pins that should be there that are completely sheered off gone.

Barely used AMD FX 8350 with some pins bent and some missing. I tried to shove it into the motherboard the wrong way. Learned my lesson. It's hard to tell, but it looks like there are 5 bent and 3 missing.
Let us know when you get the pins back on I seriously doubt that without master soldering skills...or other skills that missing pins can be fixed...
Proceed with caution...after all it's only a CPU.There is a surprisingly big market for "flipping" broken components like this. Some people will the ability will buy broken items, fix them, and then sell them again for a profit (because now they are working).

A good example of this is old game consoles. some of the youtube channels I subscribe to essentially make videos of this; one instance had them buying a lot of 40 "for parts/not working" SNES consoles for a little less than 100 dollars or so. They made a series of videos on each one where they fixed it and the problems it had; replacing Capacitors and whatnot. A few were not salvagable, but in the end he had over 25 working consoles that he was then able to sell onto ebay as working systems for 40 dollars or so each.

This is sometimes a good way to get a cheap new system. People will often sell their "broken" handheld systems, consoles, and computer components as not working, and because they aren't working, they are usually much cheaper than one that is working. Another instance had one guy buying a broken/as-is/for parts Nintendo DS for 5 UK Pounds, and the only problem was a loose cable connecting the display screen that he was able to fix quite easily.

In this case it's probably a similar THING; if you think you can fix it you can get it a lot cheaper than a known-working component.Quote

Let us know when you get the pins back on

I am steering clear away from this myself. I have no interest in taking chances on this damaged CPU. Shared it here to see what everyone had to share on the subject.

I have done soldering of small surface mount J-legs etc, but never a CPU to replace a pin that is missing where you have neighboring pins surrounding it and no easy way to get in there without tinning neighboring gold plated pins. Additionally heating up the pad on the waffer could cause it to seperate from the CPU if overheated when applying the replacement pin metal. One way this might be able to be fixed would be to remove a leg from another say Pentium 75 CPU and add a small drop of solder paste to the pad and then suspend the leg perfectly center to where it needs to be soldered and then use a heat wand to get the solder paste to flow bonding the pad to the pin, but the small lead or silver/tin bond would be super fragile. One little bump or bend force from the side and it would probably bust off again.

The only thing I can see maybe making this easiest for repair would be if there was a pin that had a flat round top that could be inserted into the socket in reference to the pin that is missing and when the CPU is pushed down into the socket and locked it bridges the connection between the CPU and the socket making in functional, but any vibration or movement could break this pin bridge.

To have a more solid pin replaced in its spot I would think you would need to tack weld it. But, tack welding requires you to be able to apply a amp load to the pad and pin to fuse them together, but the heat created thru this process would likely kill the CPU.

Last option I can think of is a pin that can be placed into the socket that has spring loaded a pointed top to it that bites into the pad where the pin would normally be. In electronics manufacturing testing there are pin beds that are used mostly for ATE test beds where you manufacture CIRCUIT boards and then place the board onto a pin bed and the circuit board is held down against the pin bed by vacuum, meanwhile the ATE computer automated testing powers the board and runs diagnostics on it and gives you a print out or Pass/Fail. Here are the pins I have used in the past, but they are nothing that can be easily modded to act as a pin replacement. http://www.coda-systems.co.uk/catalog/CODATestProductCatalogue.pdf

On BC's info he shared.... I myself have made good money buying broken devices on ebay fixing them up and reselling them working. I was buying, fixing, and reselling as well as keeping for my own collection old 1970 and early 1980 hand held and portable mini arcades like this Coleco Donkey Kong http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-1981-Coleco-Donkey-Kong-Mini-Table-Top-Arcade-Game-/291163050655?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item43caab929f#ht_25wt_1153 where I was able to buy these up for $5 to $20 broken, and fix them and sell them for $75 or more depending on rarety, condition, and if people are going to have a bidding war to have it like the Pac Man that I sold for $190 like this one here http://www.ebay.com/itm/PAC-MAN-VINTAGE-WORKING-1981-COLECO-MIDWAY-MINI-TABLETOP-ARCADE-GAME-/281351795278?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4181dfb24e#ht_82wt_1153 The reason why the Pac Man went for $190 is because I bought it broken in its original box for $30 via buy-it-now. The original owner packed it away in the box with the 1981 vintage batteries still in it and they leaked and destroyed the battery compartment contacts. I was able to remove the mess and replace the + flat plates and - springs with another parts only unit and make the battery compartment look like it never had leaking batteries in it. Reassemble it and install 4 x C batteries and it played like new and was like new condition. Thinking back I probably should have kept that one for my collection of old hand held arcades, but the instant money to be made on my $30 investment to get $160 for 1 hour of work, I pretty much had to cash in and take the money. The original boxes are very scarce for these and the box itself is probably worth 4x the value of the arcade game that goes in it since most kids took the game out and threw the boxes away. So I have experienced first hand how easy money can be made if you can find the right stuff at the right price, able to then fix it and flip it for a profit.

I think the hardest thing about my collection of these old arcades is when my 8 yr old daughter wants to play them and I am like... um, they are antiques and no longer toys. I did however let her play them with my immediate supervision to make sure that they wouldnt get abused, but trying to explain to a child that its not really meant to be played anymore, they look at you like you have 2 heads and it makes no sense. When I explain that if the vacuum display gets busted the main board is pretty much toast and that they stopped making these almost 30 years ago, I am still faced with the look like I have 2 heads...LOL So I have them in safe hiding away from childrens hands. Yeah, that will be pretty much impossible to fix - No idea why people are bidding on it, it's only value now is as scrap.

I recently dropped my old 486 machine (yes, I'm an idiot) and the CPU came flying out the socket bending several pins - I was able to bend them back and get the machine working again but it was extremely difficult, and the pins on that are fairly large and spaced apart, not like on a modern chip!

Buying some stuff to fix makes sense such as mobile devices, PCs, laptops, TVs.etc as they are generally reasonably serviceable, however something like a CPU is far too small and fragile to be easily fixable and even if you could somehow solder the pins back on, I wouldn't imagine they will be strong or hold up to much abuse.

I also quite like buying broken stuff and fixing it - For example I got an original IBM PC XT on eBay fairly cheap and was able to find the original monitor for it for £20. The machine was sold as untested and indeed was faulty but I was able to get it running again (single bad capacitor on the motherboard) and a bad hard drive which I was amazingly able to get a replacement for! Got the machine working and am extremely happy with it - I could probably sell it for a decent little profit but I'm going to hang onto it since it's really cool and fun to play with. The Impassible Dream.

I remember LinusTechTips tried that here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdDccsbv5hA and got it working. I suppose it's fine as a last resort but I wouldn't explicitly buy a broken CPU with the intention of doing it. I'd also be worried about the pin somehow falling inside the socket and getting stuck (Not sure how they are constructed inside) ruining the board as well as the CPU! (Tongue in cheek)Quote
AMD is working on a new hybrid CPU that is part silicon and part insect.
If damaged, it can grow new legs.
Source: rumorsucudneverbelieve.org
I am still pretty surprised that AMD are still using PGA chips rather than LGA like Intel (Unless there is some legal thing that means only Intel can do it). At least to me, LGA seems a lot safer in terms of damaging pins - CPUs are fairly easy to drop and damage pins on and (at least at the higher end) the CPU generally costs more than the board so for that reason I would prefer to damage the pins in a £100 board rather than a £200+ CPU. With LGA you also remove the possibility of ripping the CPU out of the socket if you are careless when removing the cooler.Quote
I am still pretty surprised that AMD are still using PGA chips rather than LGA like Intel (Unless there is some legal thing that means only Intel can do it).

I was thinking the same thing myself. Then looked into LGA wiki and found this:

Quote
AMD offered the Athlon 64 FX series on socket 1207FX through ASUS's L1N64-SLI WS motherboards. It was the only desktop LGA solution offered by AMD.

Quote
The AMD server LGA socket is designated Socket G34 (LGA 1944). Like Intel, AMD decided to use LGA sockets for their higher pin densities, as a 1944-pin PGA would simply be too large for most motherboards.

I found it interesting that the wiki references only as early as 1996 for LGA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_grid_array as for I seen this pinless CPU design used before on as early as 80186 and 80286 CPU's when used in Allen Bradley Automation Controls that I use to service back in 1995 and the chips were dated prior to 1995 but were CLCC as seen here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:KL_Intel_80286_CLCC.jpg which is similar to LGA in that its pinless and goes into a CPU socket that instead has the pins that connect to the CPU. I suppose the reason why wiki has the 1996 reference is because that is when "LGA" was officially introduced, however this was based on a prior design used with Embedded Systems etc.

As far as why AMD still makes CPU's with fragile pins. It may be for fear of a lawsuit from intel since they have for years been fighting over designs similar to the other etc. Fact of the matter is that in order for them to both produce a CPU that works with similar hardware and operating systems, there is going to have to be some similarity in their internal core structure, but they also probably need to make the outside which is more noticeable DIFFERENT as well. Although for the fact that AMD has had a LGA equivilent in the past, I can not find any lawsuits/infringements related to these 2 quoted AMD pinless references above from the wiki. The answer my friends is blowing in the winds...

When you can't solder something because it will get too hot, you cold solder it (not the cold solder tool from TV).

This is not the first time someone would need to find a way to cold solder something. Engineers do it all the time.

You would need a 'conductive epoxy' probably. It would need to be held still while hardening too. That would be all you would need to make it work like new.Necromancer...Probably they are bidding without reading the listing.

Solve : Interesting Homemade CPU/GPU cooling?

Answer»

Saw this on Gigabyte's Facebook page today and was like... WOW that is overkill cooling and a waste of ELECTRIC. My guess is that this was probably staged to draw attention to it as for its just ridiculous.

The only THOUGHT i ever had for home made cooling was years ago before LIQUID cooling kits were affordable to drill 2 holes into one of those small office cube refrigerators through the front door where there is no refrigerant lines to worry about puncturing and have a coil of copper tube in it, with 2 barb fittings at the door and rubber hose to have the Input of warm and Outlet of Chilled liquid to the fridge and constant flow of chilled liquid to the PC, and use a small universal electric fuel PUMP that would run on 12 volts to keep the cycle of heated liquid to the fridge and the chilled liquid back to the CPU/GPU, but fact of the matter is these days you might as well just get a liquid cooling setup that is manufactured than to craft your own and have hoses running to a fridge or elsewhere ETC...LOL

My system that runs on a daily basis is in need of a cleaning. Its been about 15 months. Just haven't gotten can of canned air yet. Its not severe yet, but I like keeping everything dust free. The heatsink to the CPU still has adequate airflow etc, but there are deposits of fine powdery dust building up on surface mount parts on back side of video card and other locations were gravity deposits form of any particles that get sucked in and dont make their way out the exhaust fans.

I have never had a system go to the extreme of completely clogged heatsinks etc like the ones that I use to see from customers systems in which you remove the front cover and the tower has a beard consisting of human and mostly animal hair since the customers golden lab liked to sleep under the guys desk where the computer tower was located etc.

I had a wolf spider living inside my system last summer and joked to my wife who hates spiders that its keeping the computer bugs out of the system by catching and eating them. Saw him climb out of the case a couple times and climb back in. Opened side panel and found an array of webs to catch prey. EVICTED the spider and removed those webs for fear that they could get wrapped up in the fans and seize them up since they claim that a spider web is stronger than steel strand of the same diameter, and I have seen many laptops fail due to the smallest human hair getting snagged into a fan and keeping it from spinning, so while dust isnt a good thing its not as critical to remove a small amount of it as spider webs and a single strand of hair can cause a system to overheat and shutdown when the fans SNAG or seize up.Quote

Impossible. Pick an area that interests you and focus on that.Camerongray is right.
One should find an area of interest and pursue that to build on what you already know. Forex ample, Do you have an interest in fish and the ocean? If so, then find information about how a marine biologist will use computers to help learn n more about the life in the ocean.
Here is a STARTER:

Or maybe you would like to build automobiles. If so, find out how automotive engineers use computers to AID in the design of new ideas.
Here is one about that idea:

Think of an rear that interest you, make a simple sentence that includes the word computer and that subject. Then search GOOGLE for possible answers.
What have you learned? How to use a computer to find answers to questions about subjects you like. Thank you so much for the info, to be more specific I just want some website or book that will talk about different fields in computer world so I can pick an area of interest. Thank you. Solve : display webpage on lock screen?

Answer»

I'm wondering if anyone has come across ANYTHING that would let you display a web page on the WINDOWS lock screen.

Back story:
I was getting ready to leave work the other day and needed to check my kiwi syslog web interface for any new events and had to unlock my workstation in order to see that there was nothing wrong. Then I started thinking. Why can't I have the web page viewable on my lock screen so I don't have to go through such a difficult task of logging into windows to see the logs?

I have found, and regularly use on some of my systems, the Transparent Screen Lock program, which uses a non-Windows locking mechanism so you can see everything on the screen, but not able to make changes. But on my administration workstation, there's sometimes stuff that I don't want prying eyes to see, so I don't think that can be my solution.

In my short amount of googling, I didn't find anything, so does anyone have any idea for a way to get this done or have a BETTER idea?
I have seen businesses use keyboard & mouse lock software in which you need to press like ( Left & Right Shift keys + Escape key) at the same time to unlock the system, so you can lock it and walk away and as long as no one knows your keystroke combination to unlock it, its well protected. Seen this used with Windows XP systems that are for display only purposes where keyboard/mouse can not be locked down or restricted of access.

A webpage could be brought to full view with a refresh instruction that periodically sends an F5 command and with F11 you can hide the browser and just have the page TAKE up the entire display.

Solve : Strange issue hardware or driver??

Answer»

Trying to figure out the cause of why on a Windows XP Home SP3 clean build with latest drivers for ATI Radeon HD5450 1GB video card, rest of the hardware is a Biostar A760 M2+ motherboard with Athlon 64 x2 4850e 2.5Ghz CPU and 2GB ( 2 x 1GB DDR2 RAM )... ... issue I have which isn't very critical but is more of an annoyance is that when dragging windows on the desktop I am getting a dragging of overlays trailing the window which remain for about 1/2 second and disappear.

Here are some things I have tried:

- I had a spare video card same make model and swapped from a system running windows 7 with no issue with moving windows objects... problem remained. * so I know its not the video card.

- Updated driver to latest for Windows XP 32-bit OS and problem remained.

- Ran memtest86 and it passed the memory test for multiple passes... looked at CPU-Z and it said that the memory sticks were slower PC2-4200 sticks, motherboard supports 800Mhz DDR2 and so I installed a pair of 1GB PC2-6400 sticks. CPU-Z shows these running at 800Mhz, ran memtest86 again and all is well. Moved a window and problem still there.

Other than this annoyance this system I'm able to PLAY all sorts of heavily graphic intense games such as Tera Rising, World of Warcraft, and Aion with good 25-40 fps on normal settings and no lag or freeze framing.

Was wondering if there was something else to check into that I haven't already to diagnose the issue/annoyance?

I was thinking of booting the system off of a different OS to see if the problem remains or not. I will probably test this TONIGHT with Linux Mint 17.1 that I burned recently for a different system.

Ok... I ran some more tests before trying a different OS /driver combination.

I found that when Not Stressing the System RAM I get small glitches with windows that overlap other windows being moved such as in the first pic.

Other times I can tear windows off the desktop and move them and a void remains as seen in the 2nd pic.

Then when Stressing the System RAM, I can make the problem much worse where the problem seems to happen only with overlapping windows, but not very often on the open desktop area as seen in the 3rd pic.

*The RAM is a matched pair bought from Corsair as a matched set of 1GB sticks and passes Memtest86.

Original RAM was swapped out thinking that it was a memory issue. Original RAM passed memtest86 as well.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Here is also the CPU-Z info in a pic that has a bunch of screenshots placed together for all info on system.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]The overdraw is because the windows behind are not redrawing.

When you move a Window and reveal part of an underlying window, the Process that Window is part of is sent a Windows Message via the Window Callback, and, effectively, told to paint the exposed area.

If the program doesn't paint or the message isn't serviced quickly enough, you get trails on that window.

Why it would be occurring on that system, I don't know. It doesn't have to be related to the video driver, it could be any other driver or even a background process of some sort somehow hogging timeslices.

You could use something like Process Explorer, and run it in the background and examine the log graphs after you witness it while using it normally to see what seems to be using up the CPU and preventing the Paint messages from being responded to in a timely fashion. Thanks BC, I'll try that out and see if i can figure it out. I have since tried a live Linux on it and everything in the Linux ENVIRONMENT is healthy. No glitches noticed. So its something strange with this build I guess.

Going to check all other driver versions to see if they are up to date as well etc.All else being equal with a fresh install and everything swapped out, my nose would point to the motherboard starting to age. You've swapped out all the appropriate components and Windows should not be lagging.

A lot of things could cause Windows lag, but I think you covered all the major ones:
  • Virus/Malware slowing computer down: Fresh install not a problem
  • Ram/Video card hardware failure: Swaped out so not an issue
  • Video card driver issue: Updated, and hardware is old enough to have very stable drivers for XP

The motherboard starting to die is my favorite solution here. When you did a clean install of Windows did you reinstall on a freshly formatted drive?

One last thought. Your other games run fine, how old is your harddrive?
Try turning off virtual memory and see what happens. It can be accessed at: Start -> Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Advanced Tab ->Click Change and adjust to 0.

When you initially load WoW does the opening animation lag briefly at the start?

Good luck,

Motherboard swap out ...... well issue with that is that Linux Mint 17.1 is happy with the hardware.

As far as hard drive goes, the history behind this hard drive is that it use to be an external HDD, but because I have a 3TB external this 250GB has since not been used in ages. I carefully opened the external case and removed the 250GB HDD and installed it into this system. In the screenshot showing that its healthy according to crystaldiskinfo you can see that its like a brand new drive with LOW runtime miles on it of just 480 hours. I have a drive in my other computer that is one of the very first SATA 1.5 drives with a date code from 2004 that has over 65,000 hours on it and its still chugging along although only 164.7GB in size and not as fast as the SSD that is in the system with it. Back in 2004 this drive was fast, but its slow in comparison to todays standards.

I will try the system with no swap/paging space allocated and see what happens. I have only really done this on systems with lots of RAM that dont really need virtual memory, but we can see what happens. Its not going to hurt anything.

As far as WoW loading screen goes, it takes about 45 seconds after clicking to start the game for it to get to the logon screen, and then after that another 25 seconds or so to get into the game with the loading bar showing progress that slowly creeps across the screen. * I expect this due to the ATA100 speed drive, and the fact that World of Warcraft is like 28GB in size, as well as at 2GB system RAM, the HDD is also swapping/paging memory at the same time that its loading so the drive is quite busy when launching games. However, once the games have been launched and loaded, the gameplay is without any lag. Even when taking ports in the game to get from one location to another the load time is less than 5 seconds to get to the destination after entering a portal. I expect this because the game is calling for the map and texture files associated with the new area that i am moving to in game. Moving around between zones in the game I dont have any lag. Its able to keep up with the map and texture loading on the fly when walking, running, on mount on ground, or flying to new zones in which new data is loaded from the HDD for that zone. I think WoW also has a precache that assists with this to where when your in a specific zone, it is programmed to load into a cache area the data from neighboring zones so that no matter what zone you move to, its direct to the CPU from RAM or Cache so it doesnt have to be fetched as scattered on a HDD each time you enter a new zone.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Has the HDD dropped down into PIO mode ? ?Thanks Patio ... I will check on this when I get home from work later. The DVD-RW drive that is in this system has also been slow, but I thought that maybe it was because it was an early ATA100 DVD-RW burner. *If both the HDD and the DVD-RW on the Primary IDE Channel are PIO, ( DVD-RW = Master, and HDD = Slave ) then this could definitely lag the read/write speeds of the drives. I totally forgot about PIO Mode

Link to process to check this so I don't have to google SEARCH for it later http://techlogon.com/2011/03/28/how-to-fix-hard-drive-stuck-in-pio-mode/Ok... so I checked on if PIO mode was happening and its ultra DMA. *Also realized that its connected to Secondary and not Primary on MB. This shouldnt make any difference, although I could swap the IDE cable to the primary to test.

Disabled the Paging setting swap to 0 and problem remains.

Pics below show info/results

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]I just realized, looking at the screenshots, that the more excessive "banding" appears over top of a window that belongs to the "performanceTest" program itself, This is entirely to be expected.

For example- here it is in my VM, acting identically to what you've provided in the screenie:

Windows 7- the OS from which you got the Graphics Card- wouldn't have this problem except if Aero is disabled because it uses compositing. Most recent Linux distributions- including Mint- use a composited desktop as well.

This doesn't explain the other oddities, though I suspect whatever you are using for those graphs on the desktop could cause it.

Solve : Secure Your Share of a $310 Million RAM Price Fixing?

Answer»

From last year. First time I saw this about DRAM price fixing.
The AG of Maryland, USA, says PC owners who paid too much for DRAM and apply for a refund. The settlement was for $310 in price-fixing suit.
https://www.oag.state.md.us/Press/2014/030414a.html
Quote

"Maryland consumers who KNOW or can estimate the number of DEVICES they bought during this PERIOD should go online and file a claim," said Attorney General Gansler. "This case, which has been in the works for years, shows we are committed to providing real relief to all Maryland consumer victimized by this price-fixing scheme."
Now if California would join in....
Not the first time for this issue to surface, but surprised MD waited until March 2014 to act on this ( late ) .... I actually got a notice in the mail about 10 years ago about a class action LAWSUIT. I filled it out and submitted copies of my receipts as proof of purchase for the memory that was purchased, and in the mail about 5 or 6 months later a check showed up for payment back to me for antitrust wrong doing on their behalf. When i bought the memory, I didnt pay a crazy price tag for any of it. But it was nice to get a check in the mail to use to fill up the gas tank and grab lunch for free. I wish i had purchased more RAM to get an even bigger payment, but I only bought what I needed for myself and for client custom builds and upgrades etc, and had no clue that there was any wrong doing on their part until i got the class action paperwork in the mail that gave me a deadline to respond by and instructions on the information required for claim placement. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DRAM_price_fixing

Solve : Emailing on another Wifi connection: can receive, can't send!?

Answer»

Whenever I am logged into another Wifi (eg on holidays etc) away from home, I get the same problem: I continue RECEIVING emails, but cannot SEND. My provider is Orange and PC is on Windows 7 (with Livemail). I have 2 email addresses but whether I USE my Orange or Gmail one, the problem remains. This message may get onto the forums or may not, let's see, but I may not be able to ANSWER you until I get home in a week's time, unless I can do something now to heal this problem.

BobPardon me if I make this harder that it needs to be. The e-mail system is undergoing some changes DUE to security problems.

Some e-mail programs use the SMTP method to send out mail.
Quote

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail (e-mail) transmission. First defined by RFC 821 in 1982, it was last updated in 2008 with the Extended SMTP additions by RFC 5321 - which is the protocol in widespread use today. SMTP by default uses TCP port 25.

Because of security issues, many service companies put restrictions on SMTP. For example, AT&T is very strict, but Comcast is more tolerant. Therefore, when you travel to other areas and use another service, the SMTP will not work right unless you make changes to some settings. In some cases there is not way to get the settings right. The LOCAL company just rejects any SMTP that is not part of their own service.

Use of a web based e-mail program can get around this problem. Example: If my provider is AT&T I can use Thunderbird are some other client at home. to send e-mail. But when I travel I must sigh into ATT.NET and send my email from the ATT.NET server instead of using Thunderbird. Con you see why? Thunderbird has to use SMTP. But if I log into the server I don't need SMTP.
Does that help any? Thanks, Geek-9; I will contact my provider (Orange) when I return. But apparenttly I can SEND to this forum. Can you explain why?
BobBecause posting to a Forum has nothing to do with how email protocols work...

Solve : Extend Volume Grayed out Windows 7 C:?

Answer»

Yesterday I was given a dead eMachine computer and the main board has a cold solder joint or something wrong with it along those lines. Very unstable and power supply good, ram checked out, and it has one of the worst motherboards in it from ECS. I decided to gut it and use the good parts and toss the board out after first pulling off all good parts = CPU, RAM, Jumpers.

Inside this eMachine was a 750GB SATA II 7200RPM HDD and so I used my drive duplicator to clone a 1 for 1 from my 160GB SATA II HDD to this 750GB SATA II HDD and figured I'd just resize it from WINDOWS 7 64-bit Home Premium once its booted and running Windows 7.

Well I hit a problem... problem is that the feature to extend the volume is grayed out. .... so some might ask why only limit yourself to a 40GB C: partition of a 160GB HDD with Windows 7... well the history of this system is that originally the build was on a 40GB SSD in this system. I pulled the 40GB SSD for use in newer system and drive duplicated the 40GB SSD to a 160GB HDD and this made a 40GB partition on the 160GB HDD for Windows 7 and left around 120GB unused. I CREATED a partition in the 120GB space for data and program installations. Now duplicating from that 160GB to 750GB drive I have the 40GB, 120GB, and a large unused space allocation on the drive.

What i want to do is size the C: from 40GB to 100GB which is more than plenty for Windows 7 to grow with MS Updates etc. Currently C: has 4 GB free and so its starting to get tight. Looking at the 120GB partition on the drive I could extend this to a larger size if wanted but i was actually going to leave this 120GB space alone, and after the C: was increased in size to 100GB create another partition to use the remaining space, then copy the data from the old 164.7GB SATA 1 HDD to this space and remove the 164.7GB HDD from daily use after about 10 years of use and in excess of 65000 run hours.

Is this resizing able to be done from within Windows 7 somehow or should I use a 3rd party tool... also if a 3rd party tool is best, what are your suggestions?

The good thing is that if I kill the data on the 750GB drive right now I am not in trouble as for the original 160GB drive is still in my drive duplicator so, I can experiment without risk of total data loss. But instead of just trying whatever tools that google suggests for this problem, i figured I'd check with you all here for your input on this.

At some point I suppose I should back up all the data to an external and perform a full clean rebuild of this system but its so highly configured and some software on it I'd be looking for a needle in a hay stack for installation discs that are likely still in boxes that I havent opened since moving to a new house a few months ago... and hopefully the boxes still exist since my wife stated the one day that if you dont need something after a certain period of time you just throw it away. I am not a pack rat, but I am also not wasteful and so i dont throw stuff away that hasnt been used for 90 days and then 6 months later buy another one of them because now I need it again ... sometimes she drives me crazy with her wasteful habits that burns money ... you guys cant help with that and thats sort of off subject anyways

Edit: After thinking about the 65,000+ run hours on the 164.7GB HDD that I would be removing from use I decided to check the run time on this 750GB HDD and its got some mileage on it. I guess I will be not wiping the 160GB HDD and will place it into storage in a ESD bag in case this 750GB dies from high mileage. This computer was used at a clients business running just about daily 24/7 for 4.28 years. I talked them into getting a better Core i3 HP for $399.99 as a REPLACEMENT with Windows 7.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]You cannot extend a partition unless it would extend into empty space, so the first partition cannot be extended using Disk Management.

Other partition tools, like gparted from a Live CD, may work. The process involves moving the entire second partition, so data loss would be a consideration. Since it is a clone of another HDD that's less of an issue since you could TRY again from the same drive though.Quote

So C: cant skip past G: to grab the unused space at the tail end of this 750GB I guess your saying, so I will have to move the data off of the G: 120GB partition elsewhere so that there is no other partitions on the drive so C: to be able to expand without conflict ... or use a 3rd party tool?Quote from: DaveLembke on February 24, 2015, 12:02:54 PM

I think so, yes. Volume extending is limited in Disk Management and is a bit on the conservative side.Give Easus Partition MANAGER a try...there's a Free version.

Solve : Computer Hardware Engineer Interview?

Answer»

Hello, I'm a high school student currently working on a career project. The assignment is requiring me to interview a person of my dream career; Computer Hardware Engineer. So please take the time to read this and reply if you are a certified computer hardware engineer, so I may ask you a few questions.

Here is my email: [emailprotected] Here is a government site that outlines what makes one a
certified computer hardware engineer.
Computer Hardware Engineers
Quote

What Computer Hardware Engineers Do
Computer hardware engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components such as processors, circuit boards, memory devices, networks, and routers. By creating new directions in computer hardware, these engineers create rapid advances in computer technology.
Work Environment
Computer hardware engineers usually work in research laboratories that build and test various types of computer models. Most work in high-tech manufacturing firms.
How to Become a Computer Hardware Engineer
Most computer hardware engineers need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited program.
Pay
The median annual wage for computer hardware engineers was $100,920 in May 2012.
Bear in mind you could just GET a job that pays more MONEY and consider technology as just a hobby. Your choice. Thank you a lot, this will help my project though it isn't a direct person it will do. Thanks again.Hope your Inbox is not flooded with SPAM since you posted your addy to a public Forum...Quote from: Solomon on March 02, 2015, 06:26:15 PM

Not many here have diplomas in the specific filed you named. The broad term is 'Electrical Engineer' which may include the area you mentioned. Many have certifications, but those are not from any university.
To fully cover your filed of interest would require:
Formal classwork in mathematics.
Formal classwork in applied physicals.
Some classwork in chemistry.
Formal classwork in mechanical engineering.
Working knowledge of photography.
Working knowledge of Word processing.
Certification in Auto-CAD. **
From the above you can see that hardware engineering for computers covers a broad knowledge of a lot of THINGS.

** Not a joke. To do modern designs for a computer you have to use Auto-CAD or something like it.

Have you tried to make contact with a company such as Dell, HP, Toshiba, etc to see if they can assist with your questions?

I am not aware of any Computer Hardware Engineers among us here. I use to work for Rockwell Automation/Allen Bradley as an Electronics Technician with PLC's and all sorts of Automation Electronic Controls and occasionally our location would get mail from students from a neighboring college inquiring as to if they could make contact with an Electronics Engineer for a college project and one lucky individual got to COME in and have a tour of our plant and shadow an engineer for a day in which he was able to ask questions and take notes and sit at the computer of the electronics engineer and the engineer was able to show him for example the software that they use to design the circuit boards which shows the component locations and traces in different colors representing the multilayer PCB, as well as a very brief exposure to the programming of the firmware for the controllers in which some were the newer flash and many were the older eproms which you would erase in a UV cabinet and then lock the legs of them down into a programmer and program them. Then they got to learn some ladder logic and work with a program called GML Commander to control automation controls etc.

Chatting with the student that was here asking about what college he was from and how many places he contacted before landing this opportunity, he stated that he put out about 40 inquiries and only got 2 responses willing to have him come in and shadow an engineer for a day for his project. And out of the 38 that didnt land him the opportunity he only got about 10 of them back in which they stated that for some reason or another they thanked him for his interest in their company but that due to security, confidentiality of materials, or some other reasons that a shadowing of an engineer was not possible.

I'd suggest making contact with a company who may be able to assist you. *Also if you do shadow an engineer you might have your foot in the door for later when you get your degree, they already know you. As for this student got to come back as an intern learning more and getting paid, and later moved to Milwaukee where last I knew as of 2001, he was hired as an Electronics Engineer with a nice $90k starting salary, after meeting him in 1997.

Our galactic neighborhood just got a LOT bigger. NASA on Wednesday announced the discovery of 715 new planets, by far the biggest batch of planets ever unveiled at once.
By way of comparison, about 1,000 planets total had been identified in our galaxy before Wednesday.
The story is dated Feb 28 and says some planets could support life.

Solve : What would cause a brand new computer to freeze up??

Answer»

I bought a laptop from Dell and within 30 minutes of TAKING it out of the box it froze up. I contacted tech support they guided me through some test and everything passed. Then they asked me to ALLOW them access to check something else and it froze while tech support had control. I was kind of relived since it meant they knew exactly what was happening. They had me set it back to factory settings which took 3 hours. I spent a total of 5 hours dealing with trying to get it fixed. After the 3 hours Dell called me back asked me did it freeze during the 3 hours of resetting it didn't so they said issue resolved but withing a few minutes it froze again! I contacted them again they wanted to run the same test. I told them been there done that I want to return it. It freezes 5-6 times when using it. After 3 days of back and forth I finally got their approval to return it! I have always bought from Dell never had trouble right out of the box. I am going to mail it back tomorrow but I'm curious about what could cause this and why tech support can't figure it out. I need a laptop but now that I'm having to send this one back I worried about buying again. I thought I was getting a good deal it's a touch screen running windows 8.1 with intel processor for $379. Anyone ever experience this? Do you think I just got a bad one and if I rebuy the same model it would be ok or should I buy a different model? Dell support I have heard is good. Their computers are hit and miss for quality. The fact that its a low cost laptop it may be a model that they cut corners on. I'd give the replacement laptop a try if you can afford to wait for the other to arrive. If you inform them the urgency of a replacement sometimes they can send you one overnight delivery with them paying the over night cost to get it to you. BUT... when i have done this in the past with another laptop manufacturer ( Toshiba ) when a recertified refurb was sold to me and it had issues with the keyboard and accupointer ... this was years ago with a Toshiba Portege Pentium II 366Mhz running Windows 98... I had to give them my credit card to charge an additional laptop to, and secure the laptop that was shipped overnight to me at their expense, and then when UPS arrived with my laptop, I took the new one out of the box and shipped the problem one back to them with same box and the return RMA label that they provided with UPS guy waiting for me to swap out the computers and close the box back up to ship back. That same day Toshiba credited back my credit card for the $350 when they saw the broken laptop on its way back to them. The replacement laptop I got was in better used condition than the first and I used it for 3 of my college years from 2001 to 2004 before the Pentium II 366Mhz with 192MB RAM just wasnt cutting it for what I needed portable COMPUTING for which was Programming in which Visual Studio .Net 2002 edition became a college programming requirement in 2003 from that of Visual C++ 6.0 that I used prior, and it would not install to it because it didnt MEET the minimum system requirements.I've been using Dell systems for almost 20 years and have had very few issues. I've recently switched to HP only because Dell stopped allowing specific custom configurations I use. The fact is that as long as you stick with a name brand you'll be fine, but even a ROLLS Royce can have a defect or two. You can't assume that just because it's a Dell there will never be a lemon - nor can you draw negative conclusions from one bad experience. Stuff happens.Quote from: Allan on February 26, 2015, 06:12:37 AM

Agree. I bought an HP laptop in March 2013 and the DVD drive failed while I was burning a set of recovery discs from the recovery partition on the hard drive. Since this happened within the 2-week allowable return period by the retailer, I took it back to the store for an exchange for the same model. I've had no problems since then. Solve : Hedy Lamarr Co-inventor frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (CDMA)?

Answer»

I came across this a few years ago and thought it quite interesting.

Hedy Lamarr along with George Antheil were granted the patent for frequency hopping (CDMA) in 1942 and is used in satellite and cell phone communication.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedy_Lamarr#Frequency-hopping_spread-spectrum_invention
===========

R. Price, "Further notes and anecdotes on spread-spectrum origins," IEEE Trans. Commun., COM-31, pp. 85-97, Jan. 1983.

These three papers are a fascinating account of the historical origins of spread spectrum. Early events include the bizarre story of U. S. Patent number 2, 292, 387, granted in 1942 to Hedy K. Markey and George Antheil, neither of them ENGINEERS, for "SECRET Communication System." Hedy K. Markey was better known at the time under her Hollywood stage name, Hedy Lamarr. Antheil was a composer of symphonies, which may account for the statement in the disclosure that a frequency hopping repertoire of 88 frequencies could readily be accommodated. Hints of spread spectrum techniques actually can be found in work as early as 1901. Very interesting materiel.
Hedy Lamarr

For years many have worked against frequency hopping due to the need of a fast controller to make it work. Conventional Radio and Television still sticks to the concept of one frequency, one owner.
But modern microwave communication depends on spread spectrum to reduce interference and multiple paths lose.
For those who want more technical information, here is a place to start.
http://people.seas.harvard.edu/~jones/es151/prop_models/propagation.html
Quote

Introduction
Land-MOBILE communication is burdened with particular propagation complications compared to the channel characteristics in radio systems with fixed and carefully positioned antennas. The antenna height at a mobile terminal is USUALLY very small, typically less than a few meters. Hence, the antenna is expected to have very little 'clearance', so obstacles and reflecting surfaces in the vicinity of the antenna have a substantial influence on the characteristics of the propagation path. Moreover, the propagation characteristics change from place to place and, if the mobile unit moves, from time to time. Thus, the transmission path between the transmitter and the receiver can vary from simple direct line of sight to one that is severly obstructed by buildings, foliage and the terrain.
That is why modern mobile devices have to have some kind of digital signal processing (DSP). Spread-Spectrum is part of the solution. But only in the past few years has it been possible to put a powerful microprocessor in a hand-held device.

Solve : How do I make my display model laptop like 'new'??

Answer»

Hi Guys,

So about a WEEK and a half ago I bought a Lenovo Flex 2 14 laptop from Harvey Norman and it was the display model. So naturally it has a lot of Harvey Norman's crap on it such as a folder called 'kiosk' which is in the user folder and contains files with names to long to delete. The most annoying thing is that despite me renaming the laptop and making every effort to remove the old files, the default user is still called 'Harvey Norman' and hence all software and programs come under this name (I can't alter the folder name through properties as it is greyed out) I also have heaps of 'ghost' folders in the C drive (windows drive) and in the harvey norman folders and its really annoying as some of them are links to the recycle bin, unaccessable, duplicates or irrelevant *censored* that I don't want on my computer.

So basically I'm just wondering if there's a way I can restore my laptop to pre-harvey norman and not STUFF anything up too much. I have copies of my important files and I've only installed like anti virus software, ITUNES, office and a few apps.

Please help, its really annoying First thing is to locate the Product Key and the Recovery partition.

Log into the laptop using the administrator account. Then create a new user name with administer level authority.
User accounts do seldom take up a lot of space. If you find photos, documents and other materiel you want, copy then to a public folder. Later you can delete the unwanted user and still have the desirable material in the public area.

I have a Lenovo Flex 2 14 laptop and I bought it as the display model and it has heaps of baggage with it like harvey norman user accounts and issues and mess on the hardrive (see attachments). I can't create a new user account because my email address is linked to the account I currently have.

Im running windows 8 and I just want to restore it back to the 'brand new' format/position it would have been in when arriving at the store so I can then just start again.

Thanks

A router connects different networks, in a home situation commonly these will be the home network and the Internet. On the home network (i.e. plugged into the router using Ethernet cables, or connected via wireless) can be network capable devices including computers, tablets, SMART phones, smart TVs, printers, scanners, VOIP phones ("internet phones"), file servers and others. The devices on the home network are accessible to each other, and some of them may be allowed to connect to the Internet.

The dialog will usually appear if the AUTHORIZATION is failing or the E-mail client wasn't able to CONNECT to the incoming mail server. It usually takes 5-10 seconds for such an attempt to timeout."What is Wanaadooo ? ?
May be a browser addon acting up..."
Wanadoo is the old name for Orange - both are valid in France.

If I click OK for the user name/password, all is OK, and I can open the mail, although within a minute, I am asked again.
If I click on X (close), it is very unhappy, and tells me I cannot open Live Mail.

Run down and turn off laptop, remove battery, leave for about a minute or 2, replace battery, turn on computer, and lo and BEHOLD on My Computer the E:/ has returned! It is not like it used to be. In Windows 8.1 the Backup and Restore features have changed. Mostly for the better. Here is a shot bit from the MS site:

Solve : FCC : one-gigabit Wi-Fi soon.?

Answer»

Yes, I did include a quote about Monday. Sorry, I did not mean to annoy the Moon or its lovers. The quotes was PART of an article about a FCC announcement.

Presently I am having trouble with my DSL service. Perhaps AT&T is spying on me. I owe them a lot of money and have to ignore the bill collectors. Maybe that is why I am having trouble with dead links.
Here is what I get:
Quote

...
The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
So bear with me. I have refe3rnces for what I said. Just hard to find the exact thing that you want it to say. Oh, here is one you will like:
Quote
...the two technologies do not have to be competitive but can be complimentary...
The link is not needed, it supports your argument, so it is not needed. My response the the quote above is that the two technologies are competitive. Unless some effort is made to stop it. AT&T can go either way if they want to. They might even use opposing technologies in different markets.

Somebody said you have to have fiber SOMEWHERE. Yes, that is true. But how close to your house does it have to be? The closer it is, the more it costs to deploy. Would you say 100 meters? Maybe 300 meters? How about up to 5000 meters.

Presently DSL is limited to about 1500 meters. Any sideband access point that can exceed that will have a possible impact on both DSL and voice telephone for new installations.
BTW: AT&T is now offering a WIRELESS home phone service even in areas where there is already local copper wire service. You see, AT&T is now separate fro the Bell system. It has been for some time. Such could be upgraded to hiking-speed broadband. But they are not using 803.11 services for that. But they could. Others do. I did speak to the local Digital Path company today and they do offer Internet and Voice Over for $85 a month. Too much for me, so I declined. Bu I fear AT&T is watching me!

EDIT: Recent link with some information about Gigabit Wi-Fi.

I hope there will be like this very soon. I will spend my money to avail this one just to make sure of my internet is not slowing down.
Let me clarify some things. A Gigabit Internet will not solve the current issues most of use are having. I never intended to give ghat impression. A gigabit network connection is seldom, if ever, needed by the average person.

The present Wi-Fi devices most people have have a max of 54 mega bits per second, Some can do twice that speed. But no Internet Service Provider y offers that kind of speed. (Exception is Satellite, which is too rich for most of us **.)

Now why did the FCC announce better Wi-Fi? Well, to make it easier for people to get connections in large outdoor areas with mobile devices. More bandwidth and more power makes the 5 GHz band a better choice for new computers and routers. The 5 GHz band has been under used when compared to the crowded 2.4 GHz band.

Wait. There is more. AY&T said they would bring Gigabit Internet to all of part of Silicon Valley, the city of Cupertino. They say they will use fiber optic.

First the FCC, then AT&T make promises. Coincidence? I don't think so, and that is not an isolated opinion. Think about it. What is the fuss about something few people really need? It is not a fix for the present slow performance of the Internet.

It was not my intent to endorse a premature proclamation. It will take a long time for the Internet to speed up. Time will tell if AT&T can really do what people expect.

** Hugues claims they can do 50 Mbps download.

What you posted was not related to the speed of global internet connections, it was about the speed of WiFi networks which is totally different, if it has just been left at "WiFi is soon going to be available at Gigabit speeds" and possibly expanded to "This will mean that WiFi connections will be able to handle streaming media better" that would have been fine but you took it down the line of "Gigabit WiFi will allow internet connections to consumers to reach Gigabit speeds."

Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 24, 2014, 09:46:23 PM

I'd say most WiFi devices now are Wireless N and have been for quite some time, this can do at least 150mbps.

Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 24, 2014, 09:46:23 PM

Maybe where you are you cannot get connections that fast, but in other places (such as in the UK where 150mbps is common and fairly affordable) connections over 54mbps are very common, and cheap. Satellite is not an exception, it is built for connections in remote areas, not for performance, the latency on Satellite connections makes it almost unusable for a lot of tasks and very uncomfortable for most.

I'm in the UK and pay £20/mo for my FTTC/vDSL connection:

It may not be affordable where you are, but in other places it is, Wireless G would not be suitable for this at all.

Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 24, 2014, 09:46:23 PM
It is not a fix for the present slow performance of the Internet.
What slow performance of the internet? The internet isn't a physical thing that has a set speed, your transfer can go as fast as the connection between you and the server, most servers now are on at least 100mbps connections. On my current ~80mbps connection and even on my previous 100mbps connection I could easily get almost my maximum speed from a lot of servers.Your point is well made.
Many parts of the world have much better ISP service.
Here in the USA real high-speed Internet is not as greedily available.
My conne3ction is, by measurement, about 6Mb s over DSL. Yest serveral times a day I get timeouts and broken connections. Speed has less meaning g if you have to STOOP and made repairs. My DSL modem eventually corrects the problem. So the rated speed is misleading at best.

Of interest, Australia has 100 Mbps service is many big metropolitan areas. It is by fiber. Reports for some users say it is dater than what the Global network delivers. Some say it is by a factor of ten. That sacks.

Now about Gigabit Internet. The term has been used by the big companies in there advertising to encourage people to open up the path for fiver optical distribution in reside4ntial neighbor hoods. Politicians and others hacve given the compoanies to dig up the streests or string cables or share tunnels so the fibber network can be installed. Not far from where I live they tore up a secdtio9n of land to install fiver. That was some time ago. There still is no fiber service anywhere is the suburb. Of course I do not live in Cupertino.

AT&T had made a big announcement that they would put fiber in Cupertino. To date, nobody there is claiming the present service is good enough. Think about it. Who needs Gigabit Internet service? Most movies are now streamed, not downloaded.

So why did AT&T make a big thing about Gigabit Internet to the home? IMHO it is just an attem
to get people to pay for the investment the company has made. Yest the fiber system has already paid for itself with non-internet services.

As you stated, the Wi-Fi with gigabit can be used for devices in the home that do not support a physical Ethernet cable.

Here is something also of interest.
Comcast opens WiFi network to all after Northern California quake

I am not sure what this means. It would seem that Co9mcast can use Wi-Fi outside a the house. No, not gigabit. But Wi-Fi outside of a house or biding.

For the record, microwaves are not limited to line of sight. That is a myth. The limitations are the regulations.

This might be news. But it has the taste of WAR.
(Maybe WAR is a new acronym for Wi-Fi Against my Rival.)
Google is going to give away free Wi-Fi. Possibly t o stifle AT&T and anybody else from the Gigabit turf.

Here is the story:
In the fiber wars, Google may be adding Wi-Fi to its gigabit cities

If it is standard Wi-Fi, one could get about 50 Mbps in from the Internet while sitting on park bench in the uptown area. That would kill the prospect of DSL service in some ares. DSL falters at about 20Mbps. Or less.
Recent FCC rule changes allows more power to be used by a Wi-Fi in an outdoor area.

Solve : VPN - Java blocking applications?

Answer»

Hi,

I am facing issues with remote access login (VPN). It requires Java, Juniper & Citrix receiver to run. It was working fine till Java updated to v.8.

I am able to login into the URL & even view the applications. But once I click on it, I GET a security warning about the certificate of the url. I select the option to continue but get an error after sometime '[Your security SETTINGS have blocked an application from running due to missing a 'Permissions' manifest attribute in the main jar'. After some online research, I added the URL (not just the main URL but even detailed like www.example.com\abc, etc in the exception list in Java config. But still get the same error. I then uninstalled Java8 & installed Java 7, changed the security settings to medium, added the exceptions, but still get the same message.

I then uninstalled Java & Juniper, installed Java 6, removed all security checks & tried. When I clicked on the application, it started a Juniper client setup install & then got an error 'juniperext.exe is not a legitimate application or plug-in. You are not allowed to install through browser sandbox environment'.

I have tried IE, Chrome & Firefox. IE & Chrome simply KEEP refreshing to the same page whereas Firefox PROVIDES the above mentioned error boxes.

Pop-up blockers are disabled too.

Would appreciate any suggestions on working around this.

Thanks

How do I revert BACK to Java 7 after installing Java 8?

WORKAROUND

Addressing these cases usually require changes to the application or how it is configured. While waiting for those changes to be made by the application provider, reverting to earlier versions of Java will usually allow the application to continue running. Developers can review the Compatibility Guide for Java 8 for guidance on updating their applications.

Solve : What are the extra keys for??

Now is the time to educate an old man. I have had my computer for SEVERAL years and for what I want I've gotten along OK. However, I have wondered what the extra keys on my keyboard are for. What I am referring to is the extra set of numbers on the left side. If I bought a new keyboard would I get the same thing that I have now or would it only have the main keyboard. I am not talking about a touch screen nor do I want one. Thanks for your help. BobAre you sure they are on the left? Most keyboards have "extra numbers" on the right, which form the "numeric keypad", which is useful for data entry & using an onscreen calculator, especially for people used to using desk calculators, adding machines etc.

Does your keyboard layout look like this?

BobYou can get keyboards without a number pad yes, they are known as "tenkeyless" (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Tenkeyless_keyboard). The idea is that it lets you move the mouse closer to where your hands sit on the keyboard. However they are only available as high end premium keyboards and don't come cheap. This keyboard is very low cost and suitable for seniors.

We still have to pay extra for long distance phone calls, but of course using the Internet from a computer is not any kind of phone call! I guess on dial-up you may get billed but you don't pay more to see far away web sites.

In the early days of going on-line there were Bulletin Board Systems or BBSs. These were stand alone computer systems, each with their own telephone number to call for access. It was often the case that long distance phone charges were encountered if you called a BBS that wasn't local to you.

The internet is different, it's as if all those once stand alone computer systems were all connected together (referred to as websites). Now you connect locally but because all those stand alone systems are connected together, you can access them all with no long distance phone charges.

You are absolutely correct when you say the amount of information is amazing. If you don't believe that, pull up your favorite search engine (such as Google) and type in a subject you are interested in and you will instantly be provided with links to many sites dealing with that subject. For any unanswered questions, a list of resources is provided at the end of the paper. Any comments, suggestions, questions, etc. are encouraged and may be directed to the author ...
A key area is the concept of Internet Protocol.
Quote
So your computer is connected to the Internet and has a unique address. How does it 'talk' to other computers connected to the Internet? An example should serve here: Let's say your IP address is 1.2.3.4 and you want to send a message to the computer 5.6.7.8. The message you want to send is "Hello computer 5.6.7.8!". Obviously, the message must be transmitted over whatever kind of wire connects your computer to the Internet. Let's say you've dialed into your ISP from home and the message must be transmitted over the phone line. Therefore the message must be translated from alphabetic text into electronic signals, transmitted over the Internet, then translated back into alphabetic text. How is this accomplished? Through the use of a protocol stack. Every computer needs one to communicate on the Internet and it is usually built into the computer's operating system (i.e. Windows, UNIX, etc.). The protocol stack used on the Internet is refered to as the TCP/IP protocol stack because of the two major communication PROTOCOLS used. The TCP/IP stack looks like this:

Solve : OCZ Agility SSD Troubles and warranty expired in January?

Answer»

My wifes OCZ Agility SSD died and I found out when looking it up that the warranty expired in January 2015. So I broke the seal and went in to see if I can locate a cold solder joint etc, and looked up the info on the silk screen that stated HOOF25-NJ and thats when a google search directed me to what looks like strictly confidential info http://www.docin.com/p-86804510.html

That I am assuming is no longer strictly confidential, but still states that it is. Interesting to see that OCZ bought their boards from this manufacturer that also made boards for a few other companies that offer SSD's. Also they have all sorts of info on what changes were made for the revs etc. Although my board was made 2009.02.25 in between some revisions listed at the site.

The nature of the failure of this SSD is a strange one. I think the controller itself is shot. This SSD wont take an OS INSTALL without crashing and when going into drive management with it connected as a slave drive it will detect the SSD and it GETS as far as trying to create a partition and then it stops RESPONDING and goes out to lunch. Also the drive will sometimes show up and other times its missing from drive management, similar to how a failing HDD with a bad controller will go out to lunch and disappear etc.

I saw that OCZ has a firmware update tool and I might try to update the firmware and see what happens. But I decided to open it up first to look for a cold solder joint etc.

Also took a look at the smart data using crystaldiskinfo and it stated 85% healthy although it has 17000 hours on it.

Anyone had any success in fixing a SSD that is out to lunch like this before? Did a firmware update to it correct the problem?Couple of things to try - firmware update, a secure erase, and the power trick.
To clarify, the secure erase function is built into the drive, I FIND the simplest way is to use the UBCD to boot into Parted Magic and run it from there. There's a shortcut which is named, oddly enough, erase drive, and it's the top option IIRC (don't do the enhanced secure erase if it's offered).
The "power trick" is quite simply, connect the drive to power only, either in its own system or in a system you're using, and just let it sit for a few hours. This lets the drive do any garbage collection and maintenance routines whilst the controller is totally idle. It's not a cure-all by any means and is often suggested as a miracle fix which isn't the case, but it won't do any harm and is always worth a shot with any SSD behaving strangely before binning or returning it if under warranty.

None of the SSDs I've had which have started behaving oddly have ever been fixable and have all been either binned or RMA'd but that's not to say yours won't be fixable - just that I wouldn't bank on it. I suspect you're right in thinking the controller is faulty as that's usually the case when SSDs go faulty as opposed to issues with the flash memory or a solder joint. Thanks for info Calum... I havent tried the power only trick. I have a USB drive dock / stand alone duplicator that I can place it into and have it POWERED to the side without communication to it and try the garbage clean up if the controller still functions enough for this.

So far I tried using OCZToolbox and it wont detect the drive, yet the drive is seen in Disk Management and stays there until I initialize the drive and try to create a partition in which it then disconnects from the system and wont reconnect until a power cycle of the SSD.

Tried to create a partition that was much smaller ( 10MB ) than the maximum capacity to see if it will allocate a small area which if it was successful would indicate a healthy controller but possibly a bad chip that isnt addressed under the smaller size allocation of memory addresses of the NAND flash. But it also fails trying to make a 10MB partition.

Pictures attached show in first image drive requires initialization. Then Pic 2 its initialized. Then Pic 3 is the crash condition that I get with this SSD after about 3 minutes of a Windows 7 cartwheel ring.

I have doubts that I am going to be able to unbrick this SSD, but am going to have it powered offline for a few hours and see what happens.

Done some further google searches and found something that may have caused the drive to crash. Some people reported that using Windows 7 Sleep Mode with these OCZ drives has been known to destroy them. And I implemented Sleep mode to my wifes power management about a month before it died. Something to do with the controller not liking sleep mode. So I think I killed it by using Sleep Mode with this SSD

Solve : Keyboard and mouse gets power but does not work?

Answer»

I recently bought a new computer and built it myself. I do not have an operative system YET, so i need to get into BIOS to install it. I've tried every f-button, del, esc and every combination i can find on the internet. The problem seem to be that the keyboard and mouse can communicate with the motherboard or so. Both of them is GETTING power, but it wont work. I do not have a Serial port CONNECTER (COM?), do i need it to be able to communicate? Both keyboard and mouse is USB.Does your DIY have a sound maker? The thing that beeps when something goes very WRONG. Does it ever beep?
Don''t use the mouse. Unplug it Don't use any other USB thing.

Do you get video?
Hart sequence do you see on the three keyboard LEDs?

Have you built before?

How do you know the PC is even working?
You don't install an OS from the BIOS...
Make sure BIOS is set to support Legacy devices and press F10 to save changes and exit...
