Solve : Easter eggs in Microsoft products? |
Answer» This is not new. Maybe new to you. The Microsoft Bear is a mascot of the Windows 3.1 (and later Windows 95) TEAM.[2] It was the teddy bear that one of the senior developers on the team used to carry around. He makes SEVERAL cameo appearances in Windows: Thinking this "Bear" is in relation to a hoax virus e-mail about 14 years ago which instructed people to remove a system file jdbgmgr.exe with a bear icon if found because it was a virus and some people not knowing any better deleted an important system file for Windows. http://www.security-faqs.com/the-teddy-bear-email-hoax.html I never really cared back then why Microsoft went with the Bear Icon, but I suppose it all makes sense now reading the wiki you linked. Not quite sure why this even qualifies as "news".... BTW...the CH News Editor position is still open...Quote from: DaveLembke on April 24, 2015, 12:35:45 PM Thinking this "Bear" is in relation to a hoax virus e-mail about 14 years ago which instructed people to remove a system file jdbgmgr.exe with a bear icon if found because it was a virus and some people not knowing any better deleted an important system file for Windows. Thankfully, jdbgmgr.exe is really only needed if somebody is going to be debugging Java running in the Microsoft Java runtime, so the effect on such a hoax was limited. Why does Windows 95 have functions CALLED BEAR, BUNNY and PIGLET? (this is actually used as a cite note)***sigh***Quote from: patio on April 24, 2015, 12:52:38 PM BTW...the CH News Editor position is still open... I have some late cricket news... W.G. Solve : What is 'Triple Minutes for Life'?? |
Answer» I was looking at cell phones and saw this: This means that every paid Airtime Minute you add to this phone will be tripled. This benefit is limited to this phone only, is not transferable and is not applicable to promotional minutes.I don't get it. What is the catch. Please somebody explain this. It is not possible to give anybody Triple Minutes for Life. Right? It's a promotional offer. They mean the "life" of the phone, not the life of the user! The phone has a unique serial number and the phone company multiplies by 3 the prepaid minutes you purchase. As mentioned, the offer is TIED to the phone (not just the SIM) and will not transfer to another phone even if the phone is damaged, lost or stolen. The idea is to add perceived "value" to a phone that you might otherwise reject when making a purchasing decision. Looks like a quote from a TracFone ad. They offer these deals with low end phones to get people to buy them. Yes, TracFone. Here in USA Walmart sells them. But the price of the phone is not high. So that makes it hard to understand. There is no contract. It is a 'pay as you go' plan. I don't see how it is technically possible to offer lower prices, no contract and a low cost device. One Android model sells for about $20 and comes with the triple thing. I have tried doing the math and it makes no sense. They will not MAKE a profit. Or maybe they do. If so, the other phone companies are really making a huge profit. Hart d to believe. And the Android models allow some data traffic. Even a little texting. But I am not going to buy one. Not yet. I am still waiting for the free fone I was promised. The US government is giving away free smartphones to all who QUALITY. People on low-income assistance can sigh up for a free phone. Some call the free phone the 'Obama Phone.' http://www.obamaphone.com/ I am still waiting. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2015, 10:15:26 AM If so, the other phone companies are really making a huge profit. Hart d to believe. They are making a huge profit. It is not all "hard to believe". TracFone Wireless is the USA's fifth largest wireless provider, it spends virtually nothing on advertising, it has according to anaylysts "a maniacal focus on eliminating unnecessary expenses." It does not have a tower network of its own, it piggybacks on the big cell network operators infrastructure, buying millions of minutes at a time; Tracfones have expiration dates; purchasing more airtime typically adds 90 days of SERVICE, with a 365-day extension package available, so the customers have to keep prepaying to keep the phone alive. Also with prepay the company has your money before you use any minutes, so it can earn interest. The phones are cheap basic older model phones bought from China in large amounts. Their business model seems to be to make a little bit of profit from each of a large (and growing) number of customers. They actually do advertise...and in conjunction with the huge retailers such as Wal-Mart they pretty much seperate senior citizens from their limited income... |

Solve : How do you clear your hard drive?? |
Answer» Hi - I have been told that there is a program which will convert everything in a hard drive to zeros. That would be DBAN. The download page can be found here. You download the ISO file, burn it to a CD (using a tool such as IMGBurn) and boot your computer from the CD. You can then use he tool to wipe the drive.BC_Programmer - Thanks That is just what I wanted. Consider the problem solved!! Solve : Windpws 10. Is it News or just Press Release?? |
Answer» There has been very little big news about Windows 10. Still MS keeps sending out little bits of this and that. That was the message from Microsoft employee Jerry Nixon, a developer evangelist speaking at the company's Ignite conference this week.BBC: Microsoft to STOP producing Windows versions Quote "There will be no Windows 11," warned Steve Kleynhans, a research vice-president at analyst firm Gartner who monitors Microsoft. When? Free? Windows 10: release date, price, news and features IF FREE, I WILL TAKE THREE! Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 08, 2015, 02:28:36 PM There has been very little big news about Windows 10.I would call the free upgrade to 7 & 8.1, and to the Chinese pirate users quite big news. Is there is a "conspiracy of tolerance" about Geeks' increasingly eccentric posts? (They do fill up the forum, I suppose) Salmon Trout, I am acting alone, so I am no part of a conspiracy. However, if Windows 10 really becomes mostly free, many will join me . Each ONE will act by each one's own volition or free will. |

Solve : Windows 10 Will Eliminate Recovery Partition.? |
Answer» This topic was published back in March. It might be news to you. I've always thought the manufacturers had some latitude in deciding whether to put a recovery partition on a device, as opposed to a dictate from Microsoft. This is an excellent point...i believe it's up to the manuf. to decide... Afterall do you really think they wanna start getting swamped with Help Desk calls on how to restore Win 10 ? ? I think not.Quote from: soybean on MAY 08, 2015, 07:37:01 AM I've always thought the manufacturers had some latitude in deciding whether to put a recovery partition on a device, as opposed to a dictate from Microsoft. Quote from: patio on May 08, 2015, 07:50:05 AM This is an excellent point...i believe it's up to the manuf. to decide... That would be the most logical but there may still be a recovery option just not a recovery partition. There has to be a WAY similar to mobile devices for end users to revert to factory settings without sending it in for repair as an only option. If ANYTHING Microsoft should make a more user friendly image utility that can create recovery image to USB Flash Drive with the same features that the better computer manufacturers have in their system builds as a way to create a system recovery set on 1 or 2 USB sticks or Burn to say 4 DVD-R's. No need for a localized space hog of a recovery partition or recovery image etc. And able to recover pretty quickly. That is.... as long as you didn't misplace the recovery media. I haven't played with recovery of Windows 10 yet, but I have used the Windows 7 built in system recovery with a USB attached external HDD and its not a very user friendly experience if you have ever used it, so using a 3rd party image creation tool is generally more user friendly like Macrium Reflect and Ghost etc. This is fine for traditional computers though to use these 3rd party tools, but it could be a problem for small portable computers etc... so Microsoft should make it way easier for users to create images that will boot off the device that they were created onto vs having to boot off of a Windows Repair Media and then Connect a different set of media to recover from.I'm pretty sure it will be the same or similar to the Windows 8 Update & Recovery option. It may not be called a recovery partition but there is a recovery option. How to Reset Your Windows 8.1 Laptop, Desktop, Tablet or 2-in 1Quote from: DaveLembke on May 08, 2015, 10:58:11 AM If anything Microsoft should make a more user friendly image utility that can create recovery image to USB Flash Drive with the same features that the better computer manufacturers have in their system builds as a way to create a system recovery set on 1 or 2 USB sticks or Burn to say 4 DVD-R's.The tool provided on prebuilts Computers pretty much always writes already existing data in a provided image file (or sometimes the recovery partition) to a disc/USB. MS probably hasn't created a more generic feature such that you could take any Windows System and create recovery media for it to be returned to the state at which you created that media for a number of reasons. One among them being that imaging software manufacturers may cry foul. Quote One among them being that imaging software manufacturers may cry foul. Well MS has created their own programs that serve the same purpose as 3rd party software before... Browsers prior to IE for example. IE vs Netscape. Netscape Navigator came out on 12/15/1994 and IE 1.0 didnt come out until 8/16/1995. Big difference between IE and Imaging Software though.... I suppose it was worth it for them to kick over the bucket of legal worms with IE to compete with other browsers of the time and have an OS that was "Web Ready" at the get go for Windows 95 PLUS! inclusion of IE when Netscape was already out there with their browser. For an imaging suite bundled into the OS, there is no advantage to kicking over this bucket and paying money out in legal fees for lawsuits I suppose with potential patent infringements etc. Legal costs far outweigh making some computer tech customers such as myself happy. I'd be happy if they even cut a deal with a 3rd party Imaging company to bundle their imaging utility with the OS though. What imaging company would turn down such a large deal even if only getting $5 per license of Windows sold they would make a killing compared to trying to sell the software on their own at say $40 a copy. Microsoft has cut deals in the past with 3rd parties to use their software rights. Example: Spyglass therefore created its own Mosaic codebase in which most source code and all features were shared between platforms. "Spyglass Mosaic's codebase was then licensed to Microsoft and became the basis for their Internet Explorer." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spyglass,_Inc. Well I know that Microsoft will likely not bother with adding a user friendly image utility, but one could dream. Until then though the 3rd party image software works ok for the most part. Seagate for example cut a similar deal with Acronis True Image....the CD ships with every retail HDD... I'm thinkin both firms did well on this exchange...Quote from: DaveLembke on May 09, 2015, 11:22:39 AM Well MS has created their own programs that serve the same purpose as 3rd party software before... Browsers prior to IE for example. IE vs Netscape. Netscape Navigator came out on 12/15/1994 and IE 1.0 didnt come out until 8/16/1995.Internet Explorer was (originally) effectively NCSA Mosaic rebranded on a license from Spyglass. Furthermore, It was also not included in Windows until 2.0, (PLUS! being an add-on pack for Windows) when it was included in OEM OSR2 installs. It was the inclusion in the OS that caused the kerfuffle about Anti-trust, which is why MS would be hesitant to do the same thing. Quote I'd be happy if they even cut a deal with a 3rd party Imaging company to bundle their imaging utility with the OS though. What imaging company would turn down such a large deal even if only getting $5 per license of Windows sold they would make a killing compared to trying to sell the software on their own at say $40 a copy. Microsoft has cut deals in the past with 3rd parties to use their software rights. This would make the most sense. The disk defragmenter is a stripped-down, licensed version of Diskeeper in the same sense.I'm a bit puzzled. I make regular Windows 7 partition image backups using the Windows 7 disk imaging tool, to my NAS, to an external USB drive, and an internal (second) hard drive. I can restore them using either a Windows 7 recovery disk, created from Windows 7, or else my Windows 7 install disk has the same functionality. I have done it multiple times. Is this not, effectively a built-in feature? Why would I need an 3rd party product? For what its worth, here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RL9M7CsP4qo Quote Recovery options in Windows 10This video is about six months old and might not represent the final product due out in July. Quote from: Salmon Trout on May 09, 2015, 05:17:17 PM I'm a bit puzzled. Is this not, effectively a built-in feature? Why would I need an 3rd party product? Interesting, I didn't know about that capability. I think that feature was removed from Windows 8 for some reason- I think they claim it was replaced with the "Refresh System" capability, which is hardly the case.Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 09, 2015, 11:39:29 PM Interesting, I didn't know about that capability. I think that feature was removed from Windows 8 for some reason- I think they claim it was replaced with the "Refresh System" capability, which is hardly the case. Microsoft introduced the system image utility in Windows 7, and then tried to hide it in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. I don't know what version of Windows 8 have the system image option natively; in Windows 7 it was only included in the Professional, Ultimate, and ENTERPRISE editions. I don't have a Windows 8.x system myself but according to lots of web sources, it's in 8.x. In whatever Windows 8.x VERSIONS that support it, it's found in Windows 8 under Recovery, (called "Windows 7 File Recovery") and in 8.1 it's in File History (called System Image Backup.) It seems to be in that place in Windows 10 as well, at least in the Technical Previews. With the advent of UEFI I'd really like to see PC manufacturers implementing what Apple currently does where there is no recovery partition (therefore no wasted disk space and no issues if the drive needs replaced). Instead the EFI has a feature where it will download the OS image from a remote server and then start the installer without needing any information from the hard drive. |

Solve : Windows 7 Professional COA Key Sticker under $40.? |
Answer» Moderator: This is NOT a commendation. It is a question. If you buy a new Windows 7 Pro DVD with the COA, it can run well over $100 from retail outlets. ( COA means Certificate Of Authenticity.) But on famous action people are selling the COA sticker for under $40. The catch? You agree to buy a junk computer with the COA. If you do not pick up the computer and pay an addition fee for pickup, the PC is sent to the junk yard. So they say. Is this legal? That is my question. Earlier I had bought a Windows 7 DVD with a COA only to find that MS would not authenticate the key. So I am very skeptical about this. Only active seller says this: Quote Windows 7 activation: COA can activate any brand PC. But you need to have Windows 7 Professional. A single COA is only good for a single PC, if you use more than 1 PC with the same COA, both PC will be de-activated. We cannot recover for that. Please just use a single key on a single PC. Sometimes in order to activate another brand system you may need to CALL Microsoft activation center ***numbers deleted*** for Automatic Phone Activation.I want to have windows 7, 8 or 10 on two of my newly rescued PCs Sadly, the two KEYS I have are ALREADY tied to older junk desktops. What I do not understand is how the guy can re-use a key from a junk PC Or does he? What does he know that I don't? If I were a rich man... I would not ask. No, it is not legal. Yes they can SELL the COA with the original machine but it is not legal to install the copy onto any machine other than the original so it is virtually useless. Stay away. |

Solve : Boy makes low cost Braille Printer with Lego? |
Answer» It was about four years ago. Developed by Shubham Banerjee, a 7th grade student from Santa Clara, California. BRAIGO is a Braille Printer using Lego Mindstorms EV3. This concept slashes the price of a printer from more than $2000 to around $350 for education, teaching and home use purposes. Thus giving a more cost effective printer for the disadvantaged.Would like to know what he has done lately. Curious if he got some help vs done this all on his own. I have USED the Lego Mindstorms with USFirst.org Lego Robotics where I am a Lego Robotics Coach and if it wasnt for some adult input on the matter, pointers on what direction to go and how to achieve something showing the kids the physics & math that is beyond their scope at their age, the robots wouldnt function as well as they do. On our team we have 9 thru 12 year olds and I feel that this kid may have had a PARENT help them with this some. Its not impossible for him to come up with this on his own, but the complexity of it I have to question if an adult assisted whos an engineer etc. Someone should have an extensive interview with the kid 1 on 1 and have the kid describe every part of the design, why he chose it, and explain the programming involved to prove that he DOESNT get tripped up stumped on what he should know and run to dad for answers to questions. Anyone can make something with their kid and then back off and say that their kid did all the work as a way to promote them. What parent wouldnt want to give their kid a benefit over another kid such as down the road when applying to colleges, and in the letter sharing a half truth project as a means to leverage their kid into getting accepted to a big name college with grants etc. Sorry to say I have my doubts with this project that the kid so called did all on their own, but the credibility of this should be tested extensively to make sure the kid knows EVERYTHING about its design and can share why he chose to design it a specific way as well as explain the programming involved which the programming is simple in which you connect modules together using a Mindstorms GUI and edit the parameters of each module, but the math, logic with sensors that need calibration, and timing is difficult and how he calculated duration of motor movement or distance CALCULATION by revolutions of each of the motors to place a punches in the paper at just the right positions to be read as good braille. The programming is not an actual language where you start from scratch, but instead its simplified for kids to work with pre programmed modules/objects in which you can plug in values in the editable fields and with module/objects chained together on the Mindstorm GUI IDE it then takes that module/object structure and converts the simplistic structure back to low level instructions for the MindStorm controller which has sensor input jacks and motor output jacks and a USB port used for download/upload between PC with Mindstorm GUI. The article has some comments and it looks like he did respond to e0mail. Maybe somebody in your team would like to tray and reach him. |

Solve : AM1 Build - Only Single Channel Memory? |
Answer» Figured I'd share this in CASE anyone else was planning on building one of these AM1 builds. I put mine together and I have the Sempron 3850 Quadcore Kabini 1.3Ghz and its performance is about the equivalent of a 65 watt Dual-core but at 25 watts. At least you hopefully saved more than the additional $2 going with an AM1 build over the alternatives sounds like a decent little energy efficient PC. Yes this build was very inexpensive. Motherboard was $37 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128696&cm_re=gigabyte_am1-_-13-128-696-_-Product CPU was $36 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113366&cm_re=sempron_3850-_-19-113-366-_-Product RAM was $34 ( 2 x $17 ) for 2 of these for 4GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820239848&cm_re=kingston_2GB-_-20-239-848-_-Product Other parts below I had already: eMachine mATX case ... the ECS motherboard in it was dead. 350 watt cooler master power supply since I tossed away the eMachine power supply because I dont trust it after the motherboard died in that build. 300GB Maxtor SATA HDD 16x DVD-RW SATA drive Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium ( last license available from the 3 license PACK that I own. ) Not a bad computer for $107 in new parts mixed with parts already on hand and last of the 3 license license activations. The computer runs on about 18 watts idle and when running benchmark pulls just shy of 25 watts. Older Dell 17" flatscreen runs at 22 watts and so the whole computer draws 40 watts at idle to just under 47 watts when benchmark has it running full bore to crunch numbers and RENDER graphics etc. Next project ... buy and install solar panels on roof of barn and wire them with trickle charge circuit to lead acid battery bank that has many fused links. |

Solve : New virus/malware?? |
Answer» This is part of a conversation I just had with Microsoft tech help. The pop ups mentioned below appear to be similar to the Microsoft telephone scam calls. Has this come up before? If so can you direct me to the discussion? This looks serious for folks that are not security minded. I was hoping for an answer to my questions first to know if others have had this identical message. The message is from the malware, "pcinfectedalert.com". it redirects you to various websites which show these messages. It has nothing to do with Microsoft. The messages themselves are absolute gibberish, but as you said it can fool the uninitiated. That is sort of what they are going for. The fake Microsoft tech phone scams go back several years. This is merely a evolution of the former Cold-call MS tech support scam. At that point the goal was to charge your credit card under the guise of "support". The goal appears to still be the same, likely to prevent people from issuing a chargeback if they are under the impression that they offered a legitimate service.Search for 1 844 317 7202 And get hits like this: http://www.callercomplaints.com/SearchResult.aspx?Phone=844-317-7202 OR http://844-317-7202.stopcall.me/844-317-7202-720336 It is an unlisted number. If you're still getting those pop-ups you should have have your computer cleaned. If you wish to do that, please let me know and I'll move this topic to the malware forum and commence the cleaning. So far it has only occurred the one time and my full Zonealarm scan showed no problems. I THINK I will see what happens over the weekend before doing anything else. Perhaps it was just a pop up and not an infection? I appreciate the help I have received on this forum and hope that you will keep your offer open for a few days. No doubt I and others would benefit. Thanks, DrfJust wanted to mention that sometimes a bad website will have a script trigger to tell you fake info as a means to try to get you to take action in which they are hoping you will get fooled into unknowingly infecting your system with an install that OTHERWISE cant happen without your help to infect yourself and/or spending money to remove fake viruses, or go through the motion to install a virus that doesn't exist at the time of the pop up message, but by clicking to install a fake tool you unknowingly infect yourself in a phishing and trap with sometimes ransom scheme. In the PAST I have found some websites out there on the web that have these script triggers. If you remember what you were doing, where you were surfing at the time when this happened, if you go back and FOLLOW the same path you might see it pop up again. I have not seen this specific pop up, but I have seen others that are creative in which a fake virus scan pops up and you see numbers start counting up showing 394 infections for example and its all fake trying to prey on those who don't know any better. A scan using Malwarebytes is advised to make sure that you don't have anything bad on system as BC_Programmer was indicating with Quote The message is from the malware, "pcinfectedalert.com". it redirects you to various websites which show these messages. It has nothing to do with Microsoft. If you find anything on your system and it needs a cleaning then SuperDave is the guy to contact for further help.Thank you Dave. Not only helpful information but impressive communication skills that filled in some more of the gaps in my limited computer knowledge. I did not touch a computer until 6 years ago and now at 80 the learning curve remains steep. If this is a "new" presentation a little publicity may help others. I must find a PUBLIC pay phone and see what pitch a call will bring. Thanks again, DrfThe last word for now is that the pop up has not showed itself again and up to now I have no computer problems that I am aware of. Thanks again for the help. |

Solve : What you need to know about warranty laws? |
Answer» This was published two years ago in Consumer reports. It still represents your legal rights in the USA. Other countries may have similar laws in force. The written warranty is not the whole storyThe article goes on to say... Quote You do not need the service contractCool idea! So, be SHARP when it come to quality. Don't let them get off easy when they SELL cheap products (I just had a bad experience. That cheap RCA 10" tablet just failed. It is now out of warranty. BUMMER.) Quote (I just had a bad experience. That cheap RCA 10" tablet just failed. It is now out of warranty. Bummer.) If this is the one that Walmart had on sale for $49.96, its the same model that I bought my daughter. She killed her kindle fire by dropping it face down and I fixed it by installing a new digitizer with was a royal pita. She then killed it by downloading something that corrupted the flash memory so it wouldn't successfully boot. Tried factoery hard init and that didn't help. Tried a online tool that someone coded up which was suppose to help unbrick a bricked kindle fire but it doesn't boot up far enough to support USB communications to establish connection to it. Ended up seeing this RCA Tablet for less than $50 at Walmart and figured we'd get her that since she has such as good track record with these portable devices at just 10 years old. Surprisingly its still working. She uses it all the time. I know that RCA is at the low end of quality. If she gets 1 year of use out of it before she kills it that would be an accomplishment. We told her to be careful with this one because we were not going to buy any others for her. But I still find it in the seat of recliner before sitting down etc and so one of these days its going to get sat on or stepped on or something spilled on it when its left on the kitchen table etc. DaveLembke, Thanks for the comeback. The one I got was a ten inch, it costs more. Did not mean to suggest all RCA products are trash, just reacting a bit to my misfortune. That thing had been sent back earlier on a RMA and worked for awhile. I was geeing to like it when it zonked the battery. Walmart now has a policy that you have to seal with the factory if it fails after 15 days. Even so, I would rather buy at Wallmart than from an on-line distributor. Now I am down to using my wife's Kindle Fire, which has been more reliable. Amazon is on of the few on-line stores I trust. |

Solve : Can you match IP addresses from different emails?? |

Solve : Is it me or the site? |
Answer» So I NEED to know is this my computer's problem or the site's and if MINE, what is it? So I go on this site to play games and one minute I'm playing then I shut if down and TEN minutes later the game won't load. Keep in mind I play on other sites like this one. Where you can play or download a video game. I choose the game from my ISP FAVORITES list, it show the game's title in it's usual black square with the site's color borders. I wait and wait but the game never loads. The bottom keeps saying "Waiting for" and my cursor has the hourglass by it forever. so I dump the page. and reload it from my favs. Nothing again. so I use the site search box. the titles may or my not come in if it does and it has the "Click to Play" button... I click and nothing. It doesn't load. If I reload from fav and the title page displays the "Cleick to Play" which usually means the game will open in seconds, it still won't open. Now keep in mind I have no problems opening other sites like this one or site like Twitter, Facebook etc... This is the only site that does this. Is the problem my machine or the site. Oh one more thing the site's speed on the games is much faster than the speed should be. not totally unplayable but really fast. The site's mod /admin says there is no problem with the site because others are logged on. But Walmart.com says the same and everyone knows they have issues. Than you for your time and response. What site so we can test at our end?The site is 8bbit I guess it'a address is www.8bbit.com To be fair in testing the site would you need to pretty much use tmy type of connection? The site says WV and IE8 works there and I use both. However I use both on every other site as well with no problems. Thank you for your tie. |

Answer» So my daughter is doing a report on World War II and was asking about her great GRANDFATHER and I decided I would look up my grandfathers metals. As for I know he got a few medals, but not sure which ones. I remember one of them a bronze star. As the software quickly identifies your version of windows you will see a new screen that says "Winsock.dll found. Please select YES". (Always click YES at this prompt when you re-start the software in the future.) heh nothing like completely pointless messages. it looks like it is actually an MS-DOS program so won't even work on 64-bit Windows. It looks to be a very old way of ddoing something. You may want to do it in a sandbox computer. Apparently it will modify some widows components. EDIT: As BC noted, it would not be a 32 bit program. Try to run iton a old PC with windows 95. I MIGHT open it on a XP 32-bit virtual machine where its contained. |

Solve : I Lost My Game To Tabbed Windows? |
Answer» Happy New Year Gamers... Everyone, have I lost my game forever? I had an online game open and while open I inadvertently opened up my History and clicked on something in there which replaced what was in the opened window. Apparently Chrome will not allow you to open the History and use it while a window is opened without replacing that opened window. So now, my "The 7th Saga" game (which was at Lv 72) has been eaten up to the point that I can't even get back to my game from my favorites.Without starting the entire game over. Can I get my game back and at the point I was when I opened the History window? Thank you guys and dolls... Online Games usually have a server that you authenticate with and once logged on the information from a server populates a flash session or dynamic HTML session. If this game is one of those games that every time you start the game you start from scratch then thats just the nature of the game by design. However a game that has levels and based on its title I would think that if you go back to that website where the game is hosted and logon to the website, it should have your information there so that upon logging on and maybe having to select what Realm or Server your connecting to you can get back to where you were at level 72. What I have seen some people do is wipe out history and passwords and after not using their passwords for a long time they forget them. So now when the password is no longer stored in the system and password is unknown they are locked out of the game. This requires them to use a Forgot My Password tool on the website and then you have to supply the user name or e-mail address that was used to register the game and then they will e-mail you a password reset to follow a link and change password ect. Other mistake some people do is that they forget what realm or server they connect to. So after the logon to the website you need to select the correct server. If the incorrect server is selected you will start from scratch at level 1. This is because your game is on a different server. You then have to log out and logon and select a different realm or server until you find the one that your level 72 is at. Maybe this is the problem your running into. Additionally lots of the games like this have support for pass through FaceBook authentication and so it might be possible to link your Facebook to the game account as well, however this may assume you under a different identity than that of the account you already have with them, so sometimes it doesnt work after the fact to link a Facebook authentication to a game. * Note: I personally avoid this Facebook authentication method for games. I prefer each and every website to have its own username/password associated with them to avoid getting hacked. The 7th Saga was a Super Nintendo game, so best I can figure is you were using one of the online emulation sites which emulates the system to play the game for you. In which case the answer is probably no. Hi, and thank you for your efforts. Yes the game is online at OldGamz in the SNES forums. Thsite allows for you to save after each hit each kill or each level as many times as you wish. It also has reset options. So it is not a restart with each login, no. A login will last until you clear your cookies. then you MUST login again and your game begins from your last save, even if in the middle of a battle. What happened yesterday, I have no idea, except to say it occurred when I had the game opened and I went into my History and clicked a site , that page replaced my game. As soon as i saw that I used the back button in the browser bar/row to go back to my game page. It did however, the info on my game was lost. Lost not only in that window. but also in my favorites/bookmarks. I always thought that was sacred. No matter what you could always go to favorites to restore your saved info. And this was saved info believe me. I save after each it sometimes. I really want to know exactly what might have happened to devour my info. I did contact the site about retrieving my game at the level lost , however, they said they cannot do that. Admonished me about backups. The problem was the Chrome tabbed browser which AOL Techs can never find in the programs. I was told Firefox was going to be installed as my Default browser. The tech said it isn't. But AOL overwrites whatever they want and make it so you can't undo it. their techs have never been able to undo Chrome browser cause they've never found the program. My options now seem to be either drop the game where I was playing with a group or to restart the entire game when i was 8 levels from maxing out a very tough grinding game. Btw, I did logout of that site and re-login. I restarted my computer also, and nothing. The save is just vanished into air. Darnit! Thank you guys, I appreciate it. I took a look. Your "favourites" in the browser or otherwise don't save any game data whatsoever. All save data looks like it is stored locally; when you hover over the Flash Player there are options in a toolbar that allow saving and loading State, which basically takes a snapshot of the entire game state and saves it to a file, and allows you to load it later. It never loaded any save info automatically for me. The save data that is part of the game itself- that is, that would be saved on the Super NES CARTRIDGE- seems to work, however the game only allowed you to save in Inns. Since you said you saved after "every battle" it sounds like that isn't what you used. But the Save States I described- where you explicitly select a destination file or a file to load, don't sound like what you've used to "save" either. I suspect that perhaps registered users get some kind of automatic feature. Either way the data would be stored locally on your computer, if anywhere. It looks like the default format is FILES with "gs0" extensions where 0 can be any number up through 9. You might want to use a search tool to search your hard disk for those files as you may find something. Another thought is, Have you left that Tab open the entire time? If you click on a Favourite in Chrome and you already have a tab open to it, it will merely switch to that tab. Hi PC_P, thank you for the interest. It's appreciated. So that site does allow you to enter Inns to save your progress but that is for the purpose of, shall we say warping from town to town. As you were in the site and loaded a game I'm sure you noticed underneath it about 7 icons... these control game play. The "Cloud" is the icon that allows you entry to the Save and Continue Progress of a game. So yes, you can save your game play as often as you like and end the game as I mentioned, in the middle of a battle if you wish, COME back in a year and pick up right there. My thing is, that game is still in my Favorites, however it has been wiped clean of my data/info. That has never happened before and I have no idea why it happened this time. As for the tabbing of windows. When the ISP introduced that version the tabs were in one window. But versions later the new window simply replaces the one that was opened. And today when I was on with a tech it opened in individual windows. So that if I had a game opened, and went into browser history, it opened another page so there were two pages open. But again, that just happened starting today. *shakes head* To be honest I don't even know what browser my comp uses. Lenovo tech said he was going to replace "Edge" with "Firefox" and make it my default. However, when I use the "What browser am I using search," It says Chrome. My System Information shows it is Chromium. Today he said you can't be using that because you have the AOL Desktop as your browser. All I know is I see remnants every time I close programs or pages or anything, a tracers closes like there was more than one browser working. When I'm over my disgust I will probably begin a new game of The 7th Saga. Sorry if this is muddled. I'm just stunned about this thing. And i WORRY about the next time. Thank you again... enjoy your evening. No, I'm not comp savvy, what I know can fit into a thimble.I cannot on my own search for the answer to this dilemma. Hi CHers, I hope your day is going well. I think there may be one more thing I can try. As I was thinking about Sunday and what was going on around the time of the lost file/page, it occurred to me something else happened. I remembered accidentally punching the "DELETE KEY" and I think I hit it two or three times. I was trying to hit the "ENTER KEY" and hit DELETE by mistake. So if I did delete the files, is there a way for a novice like to me recover it? I shouldn't even be asking that because as I recall, the last time I tried to recover something I ended up buying this comp because I wiped my OS off the other one. I will contact a tech later to request a remote of my comp and let them do the work. For the safety of my girl her. However, what do you guys and gals think, could that be what happened? If so, is there a shot I can get my saved game back? Thanks... Friend of mine used the free version and was able to get a file back. Biggest thing is that you have better odds getting a file back soon after its deleted as for the minute the hard drive flags that file as deleted its space that it is consuming can be overwritten with new data. When part of all of the file is overwritten then its lost for good. https://www.piriform.com/recuva Just ran it on my system to try it out. And you just need to uncheck the Install Chrome [ ] box to the lower left for a clean install. Kind of neat in that it shows files and if they could be recovered or not. Green dotted/flagged ones could be recovered. Others only partial recovery possibly since incomplete from original form. [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]The "Cloud" icon is only present for registered users. If I click it it presents a login prompt, and I have no desire to create an account (sorry) so I don't know what lies beyond. It's possible pressing delete deleted something from there. In that case, there would be nothing to recover via Dave's method, as it would have been saved on their server (as suggested by the cloud icon) If I may present an alternative suggestion; considering you will likely have to restart anyway. What you are doing is using an online SNES Emulator; the game you are playing is an SNES game, not an online game; the features, saves, etc that surround it are features provided by their emulation. As you've found, having it in your browser has caused you some trouble. What I'm getting at is that there are alternatives for Emulation Software. For the Super Nintendo console, SNES9x is one of the more commonly used ones; Higan. Both of these allow you to emulate Super Nintendo cartridge games. The problem is going to be finding the games. the ROM images of the cartridges that are used by emulators- including the online emulator- are copyright material, so providing a link or anything of that sort here would be, quite rightly, against forum rules, but they can be found with a bit of Google. (Though, this entire thread breaks forum rules already since playing SNES games on an online emulator is piracy, though I doubt you were aware of this) At that point, you'd be dealing with a separate piece of software, rather than your browser. (And, the local emulator software tends to be much better). Hello Everyone, I truly appreciate all the help offered to me. Unfrtunately this effort to have techs tryand find the material didn't pan out. Even the 3rd level tech couldn't be of any help. As for me, I am not one to download things onto my computer. So this tool, I'm sorry Dave, I won't be loading it. My only other recourse appears to be redoing the game.Ugh! Also sort of a query. if I were to hit the DELETE KEY would I lose the item right then? If the answer is yes, then the delete key wasn't the culprit. Because when I hit the DK I thought I was hitting the ENTER KEY and afterwards i continued to play the game, so that wasn't it. Some thing happened when that History click replaced my game. Okay everyone, it's been a pleasure. Thank you so much... I guess I may as well get started on the redo. Til next crisis... wishing you all the best in 2017. |

Solve : Windows 10 Upgrades Kills ...Windows 7 And 8 Features? |
Answer» Forbes magazine says: Windows 10 Upgrades Kills ...Windows 7 And 8 Features Link: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/06/02/windows-10-features-removed-windows-7-windows-8/ Quote I have been part of the Windows 10 beta program since day one and I’ve witnessed the evolution of an OS that blends the best aspects of Windows 7 and Windows 8. Unfortunately Microsoft MSFT -0.15% has now also confirmed that Windows 10 will kill some of its predecessors’ most loved features…Posted on June 02 by Gordon Kelly, Contributor He claims that: + Watching DVDs requires separate playback software + Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed ainstalling Windows 10. + If you have a USB floppy drive, you will need to download the latest driver And some other stuff he thinks is important. - I could can less. I WATCH DVDs on by TV. - I pit gadget son my desk, not my computer. - I hate floppy drives. What about you? Quote + Watching DVDs requires separate playback softwareThis appears to be the case. I can't get Win10 to play a DVD with WMP. I expect this is because DVD decoder software requires royalties to the DVD Forum for commercial software, and Microsoft decided not to include it with prerelease versions. Considering most people who are "serious" about watching DVDs either watch it using other devices or they use other software anyway, I don't think this is a PROBLEM even if it isn't temporary for the pre-release. (I seem to recall The Win7 Beta couldn't play DVDs either) Quote + Windows 7 desktop gadgets will be removed ainstalling Windows 10.Well, considering they were an unfixable (by design) remote exploit, I hardly see this as a negative, myself. Let's see, have a bunch of silly eye-candy gadgets on my desktop, or be susceptible to remote execution exploits that could allow software to take over my PC. I think that choice is pretty obvious. Quote + If you have a USB floppy drive, you will need to download the latest driver This is untrue. My USB Floppy drive works when I plug it in without downloading or installing anything. Its also worth noting that Windows 8 also doesn't support the desktop gadgets or DVD playpack in WMP. Its also important to remember that while you can't play DVDs in WMP there is nothing yo stop you simply using something else like VLC to play them.My HP laptop (Win 8 ) came with CyberLink Power DVD; it works well for DVD playing. Surely, all manufacturers put this software or an alternative on all new systems. |

Solve : Has Computer Hardware Suffered From the Gamer Community?? |
Answer» Has computer hardware suffered as a result of the gamer community? I did not get motion sickness when I demoed Sony's new and improved Project Morpheus VR headset at GDC this week in San Francisco.Huh? Is the objective motion sickness?? IMO, too much super realistic graphics takes away some of the fun of using your own imagination. So instead of being entertained, yor ate terrified. Uh oh you may have set me off! Gamer stuff rather annoys me. Quote from: Accessless on June 09, 2015, 05:33:55 PM Has computer hardware suffered as a result of the gamer community?I think so. Though it may merely be a new market segment, having to sort through the gamer-oriented trash is annoying. For example- even RAM is not free of this. You have those ridiculous looking RAM modules that have brightly coloured goofy appendages sticking out of the top: Now, thankfully- again, this is just a market. You can find "Normal" RAM; Corsair- the same company- has XMS2/XMS3 for example is pretty good (IMO) and isn't super-flashy, and, coincidentally, is far cheaper. That page you linked is pretty hilarious though. "Military Class 4 components" (They don't mention how badly you'd have to screw up to not meet those requirements). The blurb about their "Network gaming" is pretty hilarious. And the "feature" they seem to illustrate as being related to some special network chip is actually part of their software. Thankfully at the bottom is a proper spec sheet- the LAN is apparently gigabit- so there is that much going for it. The big issue I had when I built the computer I'm using right now is that while playing games better than my old system was sort of expected, it was not a requirement and it wasn't why I was upgrading- the main reason was basically that it was starting to lower my productivity for my work. And when searching for components you have to dodge all sorts of gamer-oriented trash. There are graphics cards with RGB LED's illuminating Logos. The fact that you can change the colour of the LED is somehow marketed as a feature. Because that is certainly the killer feature I'm after, being ABLE to arbitrarily change the colour of a LED light on a graphics card. Network cards are also marketed in this way too. And that is because only the "gamer" archtype is both interested in computers while simultaneously a lot of the time being completely ignorant of how it works. the LAN capabilities of pretty much any motherboard makes separate network cards redundant unless you specifically need more than one (eg for a server system). But then you have things like gaming network cards, where they put some giant heatsink thing on it and pretend there is some super-fancy network chip utilizing super awesome gaming technology to eliminate your pings... and you know that the heatsink is probably not even attached to anything and is just a thin cover over a basic network card to justify a higher price point. Sound Cards suffer from some of the same issues. First their card lines have absolutely stupid names. Take the Creative X-Fi "Fatal1ty" or however it is spelled. Apparently it's named after some "Pro-gamer" handle, and he used the card. Well, good for him, I guess. It's not as if we see enough ignorant douchebags telling us what to buy, after all. We need a few more. Now the advantages of Sound cards are not completely non-existent, but the "Gaming" benefits are. Sound cards are good for music production and similar tasks, but they aren't going to improve gaming- at least not anymore, since most hardware accelerated sound tech has been replaced by the Windows Sound Mixer. I haven't seen hard drives marketed as "gaming" devices thankfully, not that I'd be surprised to see something like a "WD Dremora" that is marketed as a super gamer HDD that is really just a WD Blue dressed in a skin/covering to make it styled like the Dremora from the Elder Scrolls. Laptops of course don't get to escape this treatment. I dealt with that first-hand. I needed a new laptop to make Visual Studio and my work actually doable without my desktop system. None of the "value" laptops on offer had the specs I needed, though they had the appearance I would prefer. Once you get to the specs needed for what I wanted I was looking at gamer laptops that are styled to look like something out of Star Trek. And they are always emblazoned with some huge distinctive logo. "Republic of Gamers" being one I see a lot. That is a country I don't think I even want to imagine. I ended up finding a laptop that had what I needed that didn't look completely ridiculous, a Thinkpad T550, so it is possible to find, but the manufacturers that actually cater to higher-end usage and aren't after "MAX EF PEE ESS" are few and far between. I forgot to mention that my example "gaming" mobo only supports pci-e 2.0This is a very interesting point - It somewhat goes both ways - In someways the gamer community has CAUSED hardware to suffer but in other ways it has benefited it. Sure, "gaming" hardware is full of marketing nonsense that has started to spill over into regular hardware, but is this really a serious issue? Sure it's annoying but there is nothing to stop you actually reading the raw specs (e.g. what network chip a given motherboard uses) to work out how it will perform and then ignore all the marketing nonsense. Most of the "gamer" features on these components can simply be ignored. As far as appearance goes, I am not a massive fan of the "gamer" style with big flashing lights and strange gaming related dacals, same goes for massive heatsinks on RAM (although as BC said, there is plenty of decent RAM without heatsinks). But again, is this really a huge issue? If you don't care about how your PC looks, why does it matter that a board has a crazy decal and if you do care (like me to a certain EXTENT) then there are still plenty of non-gaming MOTHERBOARDS out there. Take mine for example, a Gigabite GA-Z77X-UD5H - there is very little gaming nonsense plastered all over it. You also have to think of the benefits to PC hardware caused by PC gaming. If we look at something like mechanical keyboards for example - Previously they were reserved for high end users and were very expensive, back in 2011 I paid £120 for my first new mechanical keyboard which was right before they became the "next big thing" for gaming. Back then the choice and availability was limited, I had to order it from a specialist keyboard retailer. Now that the gamer community is all over them, the prices have dropped considerably and the range has grown hugely with companies such as Corsair and Coolermaster releasing their own mechanical keyboards. They are also now stocked in more mainstream retailers which makes them much easier to find. Another thing - Would GPU technology have progressed to where it is today without PC gaming - Probably not. If there wasn't a big market for extremely high performance GPUs then I doubt they would be advancing as rapidly as they are today and prices would be surely considerably higher. You also need to think, if it wasn't for PC gaming, would PC components still be widely available, affordable or have such a wide selection. If you think about it, outside of gaming, desktop PCs (especially custom built ones) are a very niche market, the average user does not need a desktop PC, especially a custom built one. Most people I know who don't have a specific need for a desktop PC just tend to buy a laptop. If it wasn't for gaming I imagine the selection of PC components would be extremely limited and expensive due to low demand. Acer Whiffs At Computex, Gaming Line Still Shells And Promises (From Tom's Hardware, June 9. Quote After Acer's New York City event this spring, where we saw an avalanche of new Acer products, we got teasers about the company's newly rethought line of gaming devices. Though we were a bit disappointed that all that was available at the event were mockups of its "Predator" gaming desktop, tablet, notebooks, and curved monitor, we anticipated seeing the new gear in full regalia, with complete specs and pricing info and availability, at Computex.Believe it when you see it. |

Solve : What about Public Key Cryptography?? |
Answer» Here is a link to a Microsoft web page: ... example, both the sender and the recipient must keep the key SECRET because anyone who knows the key can use it to decrypt and read the message. A lost key RENDERS the encryption useless. In addition, the strength of the algorithm is important. An unauthorized party can take encrypted ciphertext and attempt to break the encryption by determining the key BASED on the ciphertext. This subject is often considered controversial and should be avoided. IMO every user should have a BASIC knowledge of what this is and why it matters. |
