Solve : Adobe Flash Player Pop Up? |
Answer» I have Windows 8 on my desktop and I keep getting an Adobe Flash Player Pop up. It gives me an Error MESSAGE Number 2148 and a bunch of numbers, and 2 options to select from, "Dismiss All" and "CONTINUE". If I click on either one, the Pop Up disappears but comes back again in a few seconds. My Brother In Law helped me do all the clean up stuff and it still comes back. The most frustrating thing is that when it pops up, I can't go any further with whatever I'm doing until I click on one of the options. |

Solve : Make Install DVD from Window 8.1 on laptop.? |
Answer» Laptops with Windows 8.1 installed do not COME with a DVD to install the system again in case of a mayor HDD failure. The 3rd selection is not a full install media...just a recovery tool...Good point. In that case you also make a "image" of the partition onto a backup device. The if the HDD goes south, you restore the image onto a new HDD and then repair it, if needed, with the recovery tool. In some case Windows does not like to be restored from an image. But I can not find a link that confirms that. |

Solve : Move files with similar names to a designated folder? |
Answer» Hi, I have a DIRECTORY which I created 4 years ago, which has gotten very messy. I have about 200 files in the general directory, and about 250 sub-folders. I want to move all of these 200 files to an appropriate sun-folder. About a year after creating the directory, I realized that I was creating a situation where I would have a difficult time looking for a file I created a long time ago. I set up the sub-folders using the subject name. What I am after is a method to search then directory and associate files which are not in sub-folders, and place then into sub-folders which contain similarly names files. Manually I can do this, but it is very time consuming! Does anyone have any methods or suggestions of how either; a batch file, script, or a software utility can do this task?I really think you should do this manually. Why is moving approx. 200 files from the "general directory" to some sub-directory too difficult? TRYING to find/device a way to do this with you DIRECTLY doing it might consume more time, and be less accurate, than you moving the files yourself. I assume you created these files, so you should know - in many cases, I would think - by looking at the file name what folder a file should be moved to. If you can't recall by just looking at the file name, then you NEED to open the file and take a look. |

Solve : Is it possible to have access to BIOS on a laptop with a broken screen?? |
Answer» I have a Samsung 530u3c notebook with a BROKEN screen. I am using an external monitor with an HDMI to use the laptop. I am looking to format a new copy of windows but when I restart the laptop the monitor won't get a signal until I log into windows 7. You can buy a replacement screen for $99.95 with free shipping .But, IMHO, that is a high PRICE. I think you could get a used screen for half the price. Or even buy an non-working Samsung 530u3c notebook sold for the parts.Often if you physically unplug the internal screen from the motherboard it will force the output to the external screen. Worth a try anyway. |

I have it in word 2007 or 2010There are many options in Word and other editors for getting it all on one page. While we’re all about making your experience relevant, there isn’t a single RECRUITER out there who thinks it’s ok to have a resume longer than one page for an internship or entry-level job. You may have plenty of experience for your level, but you don’t have that much experience. Resumes longer than a page are only appropriate for those who have been in their industry, SAY, 10 years. Solve : Google, Bing and Yahoo stopped by my clock.? |
Answer» Google, Bing and Yahoo and other sites with SSL were blocked by my BROWSER. And not just FireFox and CHROME. Even Opera. As camerongray says, the SSL will fail if the clock is way behind. Ran into this with a system with a weak CMOS battery before where the year went to like 2054 and websites would complain to connect etc for certain sites with certificates and SSL connections etc. Until I got a replacement 2032 battery I would have to set the date/time to correct to fix this after each boot. Quote From this, we conclude time travel will not be possible until the SSL is revised to allow us to go back in time.Or Forward to the Future Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 12, 2015, 09:42:34 PM Blocked by the Clock! Solve : Surprised at where AMD is with health of company? |
Answer» Decided to look around at stocks the other day to see where I should invest some money next in tech stocks that may have taken a hard hit but would rebound, and decided to check out AMD and was surprised at the losses they have had and price per share below $1.90 a share. AMD has hired a consulting firm to help the beleaguered chip company ponder a split of its business or a spin-off, according to a Reuters story that appeared Friday night. After years of losses, decades of competing as the No. 2 to Intel and countless mistakes on execution or failure to see a market, the story paints the decision as one of many that CEO Lisa Su might make to help turn AMD around. Which conflicts with: Quote AMD spokeswoman Sarah Youngbauer says, “we have not hired an outside agency to explore spinning-off/splitting the company,” and added that AMD remains committed to the strategy the company laid out in its financial analyst day held in May. While I have always liked AMD's products up until now as being the cheaper way to go and get somewhat similar performance at a savings, Intel has won the CPU race, and my recent search to try to get an AMD Based Video Card for $100 or less that out performs the Price/Performance Ratio of nVidia based video cards, I actually ended up going back to nVidia with their GEFORCE 750 GTX which the AMD R7 250X at the same $100 or less BUDGET couldn't compete with the 750GTX that is more than double the benchmark performance of the Radeon R7 250X. The market of video cards for less than $100 there is an abundance of old GPUs available, but performance on the cheap no longer exists for AMD in the GPU market when nVidia has the better GPU for same budget. I have this strong feeling that AMD is not going to pull out of this downward spiral, and either they are going to fight it out to the very end and go bankrupt or someone is going to buy them out. I cant imagine how Intel's CPU prices would be without competition from another CPU identity to keep their prices more realistic with competition vs a free for all market that any price goes with maximum margin. Looking for information that might show some hope for AMD, there isnt much out there that shows much hope for AMD as for they are not likely to make a leap in stride against Intel with the CPU technology at least from what I have found in the search for info. This other site shows that AMD might have some hope for it. http://www.theplatform.net/2015/07/30/future-systems-can-exascale-revive-amd/ Personally, I feel AMD stocks are too high risk, and so I am not going to invest my money into them. If it was a dip in the road that I knew that they would pull themselves out of, then I'd throw lots of investment money their way, but I just dont feel that they are a good investment at this time, because their track record has been getting worse over the last 5 years. My last AMD product purchases were for a AMD FX-8350 4Ghz 8-core build that runs between 465 and 580 watts when gaming and an electron sipper AMD Sempron 3850 Kabini Quad-Core 1.3Ghz 25 watt TDP for use as a workstation for surfing web and light-gaming in which it actually plays games like Hearthstone and World of Warcraft on low graphics settings ok at 30-60 fps with its internal GPU of the APU of the AMD Radeon HD 8280. These 2 new builds might be my last with AMD. Worse thing to do is invest in a stock you like. If you have a limited about of time and money, the more conservative way is to invest in a will-managed technology mutual fund. Here is a list: http://money.usnews.com/funds/mutual-funds/rankings/technology Quote TechnologyMorningstar is a good source of information on stocks and funds. http://www.morningstar.com/stocks.html They will not come out of this i fear...AMD has a history of blunders. But now the whole industry is getting into a bind. Neither AMD nor Intel can meet the current demand for software drivers for new chips, so the market is getting sour. Hard to believe? Read this: AMD and Intel fail to provide drivers updates. Quote Millions of PC owners hoping to upgrade to Windows 10 face disappointment as major chipset manufacturers Intel and AMD are delaying, or failing to provide, Windows 10 compatible drivers for their hardware. With Windows 10 planned to be the first of more regular upgrades to the operating system, hardware under TWO years old is facing obsolescence....hardware under two years old is facing obsolescence. Drivers for Windows Vista, 7, and 8 work on Windows 10. Windows 10 USES the same driver framework as those versions of Windows; Windows 10-specific drivers are not necessary. Not sure about the credibility of this article, but interesting read if true that Microsoft and Intel are interested in acquiring AMD. http://www.thestreet.com/story/13286063/1/advanced-micro-devices-amd-stock-spikes-on-potential-microsoft-buyout-report.htmlThe AMD and Microsoft story is credible. Here is an article from San Jose: Biz Break: AMD soars on Microsoft, Intel takeover rumors Quote By George AvalosStill, I am not buying AMD stock. |

Solve : Hulu blocks 250 million Windows XP PCs? |
Answer» As of now, about 250 million PCs can not watch Hulu movies. Hulu still supports running on Windows XP. I have no idea what you are talking about at this point. Hulu has not "blocked" any PCs. Windows XP SP2 is still listed as supported. Quote How many unsupported software is out there being used every day in spite of the no support concern.Quite a bit, I imagine. However I do not think that is entirely relevant. I'm sure there are people using VisiCalc, doesn't mean that modern software has to support people using it in any capacity. People continuing to use outdated software doesn't mean new software or new versions of software should cater to that minority. The only time that happens is when those considerations are determined as having a highly detrimental effect on the company. For example- Let's presume for a moment that Hulu was to drop Windows XP. They haven't, despite your protestations otherwise, but let's just go ahead with that assertion anyway. so now you may follow with your ask, "Why ignore a large segment of total users?" The answer? Because they can. Once use of an older product drops off such that support can be dropped, any company not managed POORLY is going to drop it like a stone. Supporting an additional Operating System means more money invested in engineering and testing the product on that system. This is particularly true for Windows XP since a lot of UI-related things need to be completely from scratch or completely different because Windows XP uses a different Display model. The decision is made because the company determines it would cost more money in terms of engineering and testing time to continue supporting XP than those XP customers will be bringing in to the company to begin with. If you want to stick with software released over a decade ago, that is of course you're right. Just don't be surprised or indignant when you are left behind. My daughters Windows XP Home SP3 Celeron D 335 2.8Ghz with 1GB 400Mhz DDR RAM and GeForce 6200 AGP 8x video card Dell that was upgraded from a Pentium 4 2.4Ghz runs Hulu and Netflix just fine. She watches those sites as well as youtube from her bedroom on 17" flatscreen and while the computer is a dinosaur, It plays them just fine on 1024 x768 res. So not sure who is getting blocked since last I knew she was still able to access Hulu to watch cartoons and movies. And whenever anything is wrong she is fast to ask me to fix it etc. The Celeron D 335 2.8Ghz has SSE3 instructions which might be helping it support the media playing etc. The prior Pentium 4 2.4Ghz lacked SSE3 as well as had fewer transistors on the single core. Pentium 4 2.4Ghz 512k L2 cache = 55 million transistors and no SSE3 Celeron D 2.8Ghz 256k L2 cache = 125 million transistors and SSE3 Support I was almost hesitant to go through the upgrade for loss of L2 cache, but the Celeron D 335 runs way better than the Pentium 4 2.4Ghz that the Dell once had in it. I just needed to flash BIOS to support the newer CPU as for the A02 bios version I think it was was way out of date to support the Celeron D 335. Impressed with Dells CPU support lists and Bios Flash options to stretch life of older computers. The CH News EDITOR POSITION is still accepting applications...Solution Found! Now Hulu lets me watch without the "install new Flash" yap. Conclusion: They read CH every day and saw this post. They know who I am. After all, they use Flash! Thank you Hulu! |

Solve : Public computers? |
Answer» Hello folks, I have a question that I'm hoping you can help me with. I work on files from my Flash drive on a public COMPUTER. I'm WONDERING if someone can view those files after I remove it from the computer. I'm not copying the file to the hard drive. Temp Files could remain. If your allowed to accidentally safe file to Hard Drive it can remain. If shadow copy is enabled it could remain. If there was malware that is out to steal info it can GRAB and store it in a hidden area as a pick up location for a hacker. If the memory blocks that the file was in are not overwritten in RAM, it could remain. If there was a share somehow to the USB drive at say Letter E: and someone else knew that you had connected a thumb drive and could remotely get to the thumb drive they could see and grab data etc. If a file was detected as a false positive or an actual virus, your file would be placed into quarantine in which its contents could be viewed by an administrator. |

Solve : 2 Levels of Access for Android Phone? |
Answer» I was wondering if anyone knew of any apps that allow you to limit access to applications and data on an Android 4.4 phone, so it can be unlocked to give permissions to the first level of applications and data, but there is an additional wall in PLACE which requires password/code for 2nd level in access which gives access to all data and apps vs just those in the first level limitations? But wait, there's a catch. Thanks for your help Patio. I guess I will see if the content i want to keep my daughter out of if lending her the phone has been given the extra code from devs to restrict access. OR more simply, get her a phone of her own. Almost makes you wonder of thats the driving force to push phone sales and service. Imagine a computer that has only 1 logon and only way to keep others out is to give them a computer of their own when the computer is more than capable "obviously" of multiple profiles and access restrictions. So there is benefits to devs to not add this feature because it will DRIVE the volume up in devices sold which then = additional customer base which then = more money for less code! But if you give her a phone she will have full access... Laughing Out Loud!! |

Solve : Windows 10 Will you or have you Upgraded?? |
Answer» Quote from: patio on October 04, 2015, 02:36:57 PM What specific app was written for Win 10 that won't RUN on Win7 ? ? Windows 8/Modern Apps will run on Windows 10, but not on Windows 7. (Basically stuff from the Windows Store) Windows 10 App Framework apps won't run on Windows 7 either. (effectively the same deal) I'm not aware of any standard desktop applications that can run on Windows 10 (or windows 8, for that matter) but not on Windows 7, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were programs that weren't supported on Windows 7 simply because they were never tested on any system earlier than Windows 8. There are some changes to the desktop API but they are rather minor and I'd be surprised if any vendor decided to drop support for anything later than XP.Can't personally name an app from the Windows store that i would miss dearly. My PC isn't a mobile device. Moderators. Can we get some up to date emoticons please?Quote from: Accessless on October 04, 2015, 10:27:34 PM My PC isn't a mobile device.Windows 10 feels much more like it is designed for desktops than Windows 8 ever did. I also quite like having the same OS on both a PC and my Windows tablet where it works GREAT on both.I have machines running W7, W8 and W10. I don't plan to upgrade the machines running W7 & W8. As a general rule, I abhor upgrades. W10 is a decent OS but not good enough that I would upgrade machines that are running perfectly fine with their current OS. I recently purchased a new laptop and specifically sought out one that came with W10.I haven't upgraded yet but will be doing when I build my new PC (hopefully this weekend). I've only used Windows 10 for about 10 minutes which is more than I've used Windows 8 - not for any specific reason, I just didn't get around to trying Windows 8 properly. How long did you run Win ME...just curios....I didn't run it at all, never had a PC with it on. We just SORT of naturally skipped it with our family PC which was the only machine in the house back then, purely because we didn't upgrade very often.Quote from: patio on October 06, 2015, 05:26:43 PM How long did you run Win ME...just curios.... Years. Nothing wrong with it... So long as you had the pre internet explorer 6 version (Or pre-IE5, I forget now).Quote from: Accessless on October 08, 2015, 10:11:29 PM Years. Nothing wrong with it... So long as you had the pre internet explorer 6 version (Or pre-IE5, I forget now). All Versions of Windows ME came with Internet Explorer 5.5. Windows ME wasn't really much worse than Windows 98SE, though it wasn't really any better, either, given that it eliminated the ability to drop to DOS (which was considered rather important at the time). The main problem, and the biggest reason Windows ME has gotten such a smear to it's name, is very much the same reason Vista is so maligned, which is that manufacturers that prepackaged their PCs with the OS used underpowered hardware loaded with garbage. |

Solve : KODI? |
Answer» Perhaps I haven't looked in the right area for this topic but I couldn't find anything on the forums.. Beware Of This Individual http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/valuenet/chicago-illinois-60604/valuenet-richard-p-holdermatara-d-fisher-omnibox-city-prepaid-valuenet-omnibox-tv-ric-1209200 Of course, one bad report does not mean anything. You can do your own search and find a number of strange things. It would seem that the service they offer is kin to torrent download. No, not the same thing. But with the same disrespect for copyrights. You can legally watch movies and TV shows for about $100 a year over the internet, plus the cost of the Internet service. This is much lower that what you pay for cable service. Still, you can just put up an antenna and pay nothing. Thanks Geek and camerongray Yes these "media players" are supposedly preloaded and trouble free. They even offer 3 or 4 different models from like $130-$200. Well, I wasn't ready to run out and buy one but now if I run it will be in the opposite direction. Thanks, Guys. overthehill PS. Geek; you mention Movies and TV online. Do you have any suggestions as to preferred sites for this? Putting up an antenna is not the answer (been there, done that) and because my cable bills are sky high and being on a fixed income I'd just love to save some money. Re: TV and movies over Internet. If your Internet service is good, you can watch TV episodes, Movies and Morning shows with a paid substitution to streaming sites that have permission to show copyrighted entertainment. HDTV quality requires 5 to 10 Mbps. Regular TV about 2 to 3 M bps. The TV networks themselves offer programs. ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC and others. Other good sites are: Amazon, BBC AMERICA, Crackle, Fandor, Hulu, Netflix and SnagFilms. You can Google these. So, the reader should consider the proven service of the above sites and stay sway from empty promises. Thanks Geek Well I have Netflix and Crackle for movies which is enough for me. But looks like I'm stuck with cable for the winter anyway because of football. Too bad that we can't just choose the channels that we want. Anyway I keep hearing (starting Mar.2016 supposedly) that the CRTC (Canadian Radio-tele- vision and Telecommunications Commission) is forcing TV providers to let the customer have more choices as to what they choose to watch. We'll have to see how that plays out? overthehill http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/crtc/article23541572/Yes. Solve : Email Folder Tweaking Help? |
Answer» Hello. I have a question about email. I have heard that you can direct an email to a folder from the website that sent it, by naming the recipient " [emailprotected] ", (where the "+" sign is, place the appropriate character). For example: I have an email subscription at FamilyEducation.Com, if I said that the recipient for email is [emailprotected], than their emails would always land in the folder instead of the inbox. Is this true, and how do I do it, as I'm unsure of the right character to use in place of the plus sign? What email app are you using? But you can just set up an ordinary filter in Gmail to do thisI believe that's the obvious solution. I really can't make sense of the original post in this discussion. For informational reference. http://www.britannica.com/topic/Isis-Egyptian-goddess has this image: The Britannica says: Quote Isis was initially an obscure goddess who lacked her own dedicated temples, but she grew in importance as the dynastic age progressed, until she became one of the most important deities of ancient Egypt. Her cult subsequently spread throughout the Roman EMPIRE, and Isis was worshipped from England to Afghanistan. She is still revered by pagans today. As mourner, she was a principal deity in rites connected with the dead; as MAGICAL healer, she cured the sick and brought the deceased to life; and as mother, she was a role model for all women. |

Solve : Avopid eBay 'buy it now' price switcher.? |
Answer» I like shopping on eBay. Search for phones under $50 and find some 'Buy It Now' items under $15. So you go to order and you must select a color. You choose any col rand the price quadruples. Try it! I seen this elsewhere other than ebay as well online. However if your careful you will spot it and stop in your tracks before buying something that is much more expensive. My wife for example was going to buy products through amazon and the merchant there had a product at a price that was a good deal, upon selecting a different color bra the price went from $9.99 to $14.99. If she would have went with white it would have been $9.99, but because she made the selection to black it jumped for that that same bra just in a different color to $14.99. This is TRICKERY on behalf of the merchant selling the products, to lure you to a lower price item and then give choices and then the choices change the price tag. I have seen all the more common that a different size item costs more. If its $2 more etc, I can see this justified, however usually there is a price key on the page that specifies that anything 2X and larger for shirt add additional $2 etc. Where as this simple and sneaky method of someone seeing a price of say $9.99 and then they go to select color and size and then the price switches to $14.99 without any warning. Many will go through the motion of making the purchase to later find out that they got ripped off through this trickery. For a price discrepancy of $5, most people will just eat the $5 loss. Going back to complain that there is false advertising also doesnt hold water because if you go back to the same item for sale and then pay attention to the price tag you generally see the price flip from whatever the teaser price was if you went with the color and size that was advertised to the choice which is different than that of the teaser that got you there. It use to be that you just had to worry about something cheap being sold or for auction and getting stiffed with $50 shipping when it only costs $5 tops to ship an item. Ebay years ago had tons of auctions where you can win an action for say a $40 Jacket for 1 cent, then you go to make the purchase and see $49.99 shipping and handling. Most werent that extreme, most were products for sale say a product worth $20 for sale for $10 and then $13 shipping and then it arrives and you see that it cost just $2.60 cents to ship it. But the shipping and Handling part I guess makes it legal to change more since handling costs money I guess and is a very sneaky way to generate additional revenue or play of numbers to where someone thinks they are getting a great deal, but are paying more with some of the margin shifted to the shipping & handling to hide that additional margin that the merchant is receiving if you make that purchase through them. My biggest complaint however was with one merchant years ago on ebay. They had software for sale for $5.99 with $3.99 shipping. I agreed to buy 5 copies of the software and after the fact requested a reduced shipping cost since there is no way it will cost $19.95 to ship that software. They wanted to charge $49.90 which was $19.95 for shipping and $29.95 for the software. I said how about $10 for shipping which is very generous and still more than it will cost to ship the software to me. They stood their ground stating that they do not reduce shipping for multiple copies shipped together. I told them that if I am going to be shipped 5 copies of this and paying $19.95 for shipping, each copy better COME shipped individually. When software arrived, it was in one box. I contacted the seller telling them that they didnt follow my instructions. I left 1 star feedback stating that fact that they do not combine for reduced shipping. And dont follow customer directions. If they shipped me the software individually I would have left 3 stars since they complied with my request since they refused to reduce the shipping costs. But I wanted them if it really costs that much to ship each product, use 5 times the materials for shipping and time of "handling" so that I know that my $19.95 in shipping and handling was properly carried out without cutting corners to increase their profit margin that much more for people buying multiples of software like myself. The switch-a-roo of the pricing though that you saw is taking advantage of "Dark Patterns". http://darkpatterns.org/what_is_a_dark_pattern/ Here is a wall of shame with examples that hasnt been UPDATED in a while but lists some sneaky websites: http://darkpatterns.org/whats-new/ When I come across stuff that isnt quite right online, I save screenshots of it etc to my COLLECTION of mess ups. This one below is my latest cherry pick off the internet. The ad in the middle talks about North Carolina residents, well if you look at the stack of money in the picture you will see its not even American Money. It looks like Czech money maybe. I am connected through a corporate proxy at work that that is based out of North Carolina and thats why the ad targeted me like that for North Carolina even though I am far from there. Solve : Spotify to MP3? |
Answer» Hey guys!I need your help and hopefully someone can help me or GIVE me any advise I'm desperately searching for a way to legally convert songs from spotify. I already tried some well-known free software but it was rubbish. The quality was so bad and the whole downloading-then-converting-process took 2 hours for 10 songs (that's why it's not worth mentioning) So maybe someone has a better solution? A friend suggested to try sidify software, but I READ some reviews that the quality isn't that good and it costs almost 40 bucks? Thank you all in advance for helping Quote I'm desperately searching for a way to legally convert songs from spotify. So you want a "legal" way to avoid paying for music? Solve : Mozilla Gear Store Closed? |
Answer» Saw that Firefox was looking for donations today, decided to go to the store where I bought a shirt and was going to buy some ITEMS in which they get a donation kick back from the purchase and the store is closed. This March, we’ll be winding down the site for a number of reasons. Chief among them: The store hasn’t met revenue or fundraising expectations, and the ROI of time and energy to maintain it is too small for Mozilla Foundation to continue. Additionally, our key vendor was acquired twice in the past 12 months, making operations more difficult. Without a strong vendor partnership, the demands to maintain the store and provide quality customer support weighs heavily on our staff. https://fundraising.mozilla.org/category/gear/ Its sad that they didnt even try to work something out to have something vs nothing for gear with a donation kickback. Just gave them a donation but would have been nicer to get a shirt out of the donation etc as for my other shirt is showing its age when I bought through their store in the past to fund them. Sure I could get a firefox shirt elsewhere but I doubt any proceeds go to mozilla firefox project. It wouldnt cost much to have 1 person boxing up shirts to order and UPS swinging by to grab it all to ship on a business day basis to have something vs nothing. Comment below is my thoughts as well. Its nice to have something for the donation and I liked wearing my shirt showing my support for Firefox and it being an ice breaker for total strangers to hit me up and talk about computers as for its a flag that says this guy is into IT etc. Quote Scottithan wrote on 2016/11/16 at 5:58 PM: They are currently GETTING so much grief over this i don't expect it to last long... On that note i think i bought some swag from one ove the overnite developers site... I'll track down the link.Quote from: DaveLembke on November 30, 2016, 11:26:17 AM It wouldnt cost much to have 1 person boxing up shirts to order and UPS swinging by to grab it all to ship on a business day basis to have something vs nothing.Agreed. Clearly we have a better understanding of the situation than the people who have been doing it for the last however many years. It's unbelievable that they, having done it for any number of years, seem to think they have a better understanding of how tenable it is than we do, with our vast ignorance of the situation. Why does this matter? If they stop SELLING things, will some bad thing happen? Why do they want donations? Will Mozilla Firefox no longer work? No, I am not being sarcastic. I just don't understand. What is going on? Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 30, 2016, 05:23:40 PM Why does this matter? They had a shop where you could buy Firefox branded merchandise. They've found it far too expensive to maintain and the margins evidently too low to justify the added cost. They possibly also considered that if somebody was going to donate 25 dollars, they might instead have bought a T-shirt for a similar price, in which case a lot of the donation is lost to the cost of goods. |

Solve : Intel surrenders ... phone markets to ARM? |
Answer» The full title is: Reports coming in indicate that part of Intel’s recently publicised culling was FOCUSED on eliminating the unprofitable ATOM division. Intel’s Broxton and SoFIA, two chips already scheduled to be in devices this year have been canned and Cherry Trail – the chip behind the Surface 3 – is following soon after. The justification for the culling is that Intel doesn’t sell enough of these chips to OEMs who move enough units to justify their existence. As for Cherry Trail, it has significant overlap with the more powerful Core M series when you consider what the aims (lighter devices, less heat) that OEMS would rather use the Core M in any case.Bear in mind this was written 7 months ago. You now know, or should know, that MS has made a change in plans for the Surface PRO 5. It is not said to be for next year. Most likely MS is doing some very tough design changes to improve the costs and performance of the Surface pro. Expect MS to do a new design of the ARM chip. Maybe. EDIT: Consider this recent story from the BBC. Intel factory to make ARM-based smartphone chips I doubt Intel "surrenders" anything...Quote from: patio on November 24, 2016, 10:07:34 AM I doubt Intel "surrenders" anything...Right! One can not surrender something never owned. Quote The harder you work, the harder it is to surrender. Vince LombardiIntel never worked at the mobile phone market. Think about it Geek... Whaddya think the profit margin is on an ARM cellphone chip...compared to 15's or i7"s ? ? No doubt Intel makes money. If I was not so broke, I would still invest in Intel. It has been one of the beat tech stocks out there. Now, having said that, Intel is in an intellectual cul de sac. They have a hard time looking into the future. Google, Backspace and other big data FIRMS are thinking about the electric bill. Right now, most servers are x86 types made by Intel or AMD. And today RRM is looking at server sales. They will offer new super ARN chips that do the same work for less power. In the months ahead we will see move stories with ARM eating into the market share of server products. Meanwhile, ARM still makes money selling is ARM products. Not my opinion, but others who track the computer and Internet of things are saying that Intel is going to go down. Nat a crash, just a long slow glide down. Until someday the last two games on earth buy t the last two CPUs made my Intel. However, some people at Intel are paying attention. Intel is going into the ARM business. (They got a new foundry for just ARM products.) EDIT: There is a story about China making a non-Intel chip that runs x86 code. But that is another story. |

Solve : Google comes out on top.? |
Answer» This story claims that Google WiFi is better than Euro and Luna. Using two devices for each system in a 3000 square foot, two-story house, Allion measured speeds of each system at four locations. At the wired access POINT, Google Wi-Fi was marginally quicker than Eero, but it's at the PERIPHERY of coverage and the secondary access point, which was not hardwired to the network, where it seems Google's PRODUCT is most able to outshine competitorThe Google, Euro and Luna are called 'mesh networks' and are intended for short range coverage. The have the potential to reduce this cost of conventional 'drop wires' to houses in a congested urban environment. I put this here because it is not really new technology. But reports suggests that the concept is valid. If this really works, it could mean low cost Internet for the urban PEOPLE. |

Solve : Core 2 Quad processors so cheap these days? |
Answer» I figured I'd share this in case anyone else is using a older socket 775 motherboard based system that is able of running a Core 2 Quad processor who might want a cheap upgrade. If your running a Pentium 4, Pentium D, Core 2 Duo, Pentium E series Dual-Core, or Celeron or Celeron D that is socket 775 and would like a performance gain cheaply, the price of Core 2 Quad CPU's on ebay has tanked out to less than $20 each with free shipping in some offers. The 6600 is a workhorse Beast...i've used them in a few budget builds for low budget clients... Yeah the people I have known that ran them never had any complaints. They even overclock well with liquid cooling too. I remember when they first came out the expensive price tags they had, but they dominated back then. My coworker spent like $2400 for a gaming rig and the Q6600 CPU was like $700 of the cost with a massive expensive heatsink that barely cleared the side panel when closed ( a massive copper fin loop with heatpipes and a 80 mm fan at the center of the loop, the 2 video cards in SLI added another $800 to it and then OS, drives, and 24" flat screen. Its one of the reasons why i have stuck it out with AMD for so long for my new builds is because I cant get over the hefty premium that comes with the Intels. To me a system that lasts 3 to 5 years and then getting something better is the cycle I usually stick with, but i dont buy the best of the best, I buy whatever is the next available bargain to upgrade and trail behind at a heavily discounted cost of computing generally. Run systems that can meet the minimum requirements for games I am running and the games generally run well as long as the video card is plenty to drive the game. I use to tease him that my Sempron 64 x2 2.08Ghz with 1.5GB DDR 667Mhz RAM running Windows XP Pro with GeForce 7800GT 512MB was a cost of about $300 and plays the same games he is playing without any troubles and I saved myself $2000 not having the best of the best. However... Looking back now, if I bought the Q6600 and didnt go with a crazy build like his but say $1000 for CPU, Motherboard, RAM combination. I could have potentially been still running that same system today and not have gone through as many upgrades in between which probably brings me close to the $1000. So I guess what they say... pay now or pay later, the cost is about the same. However, its much easier to spend small amounts of money here or there buying price reduced and used parts than that hefty lump of cash all at once. I'm happy and also impressed with the performance her system is getting with the Q6600. Games play so much better now and it runs cool! I didnt have to get a heatsink replacement for it. Even when gaming its in the high 40C low 50C range air cooled at its normal 2.4Ghz with the stock heatsink that came in the HP tower with the Core 2 Duo with the heatpipe style heatsink and 80mm fan at the front of the tower blowing air across the block of metal fins. I have Dragon Age Inquisition installed to her system and the Pentium E5400 2.7Ghz while able to run the game, there would be occasional freeze framing where ever anything big was about to trigger that loaded down the 2 cores heavily. Both cores were almost a constant 98-100% use running that game. Now the game runs flawlessly! The minimum recommended specs for Dragon Age - Inquisition: Quote OS: Windows 7 or 8.1 64-bit. Her system specs are now: Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz 4GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM GeForce 9800GT 1GB Video Card 300GB Maxtor HDD SATA II I decided to go and buy the 5 QTY of the Q6600 CPUs from a merchant in Washington State. He has 3 left at $14.99 each with free shipping as of LINKING this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/322330984064 Going to give my daughter one of these as a replacement to her Celeron D 336 2.8Ghz... she is going to have the largest performance gain going from 1 core with crippled cache to 4 more powerful cores and way more cache. Daughters motherboard has the Q965 chipset... and the Q6600 is flagged as partially supported... whatever partially supported MEANS? http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/mb-Intel_(chipsets)/Q965_Express.html At bottom of the page the yellow check mark for partially supported states... - The CPU may be supported. Please check the source of this record to see whether it was posted by a visitor, or was created based on chipset support list. I still run my Q6600...it's my Win7 rig currently. I beat the snot out of it and never had anything other than the stock cooler... Just checked it for shirt and giggles...doin an image of another HDD to external.... All 4 cores between 29 and 32c...My 775 System was built with a Core 2 Quad Q8200 to begin with. I replaced it with my current 4770K-based system but HARDLY out of necessity. I did try to upgrade it afterwards and found a QX6700 Extreme which was the best processor that could run on the motherboard. it was only 8 dollars shipped on eBay. However I didn't trust it. It worked fine but it's temps hovered around 70 degrees at idle even after several repaste attempts, so I put the system back to the Q8200. I'd probably need to replace the cooler and haven't really been bothered to do so; I seldom even boot the system so while 8 dollars is worth the diversion of installing a CPU a new cooler tends to run a bit higher. |

Solve : ScanGuard ... good or dangerous?? |
Answer» The TITLE was taken from a recent Microsoft forum... My advice is to install strange, suspect software on an old PC that I would not mind re-formatting if the software turns out to be malicious. In fact, I’d re-format the drive EVEN if I didn’t detect anything fishy; something may be lingering deep in the background. At the very least, I would create a Restore Point just before installing ScanGuard, in hope of being able to restore my PC’s settings and files to that time when I am done playing with SafeGuard.I don't really know. Do you have any real INFORMATION about this new 'company' called "SafeGuard."It's ScanGuard.....and It's garbage. Thanks for the correction. SEARCH Results SCANGUARD Trademark of ARTHUR Blank & Co. Solve : Tablet I guess is considered a TOY to Walmart? |

Here's the very, very long story about the RCA 10 inch tablet.... https://www.consumeraffairs.com/home_electronics/rca.html Top 708 Complaints and Reviews about RCA Notice this report is about many RCA products. Below are relevant here. Quote I have got a Voyager PRO with keyboard case few months back and it worked for the first month and then it quit. It wouldn't. It acts like it takes to charge and then it's not taking a charge. It won't turn on. You can't reset it and nothing. And when you contact RCA they want you to pay to send it to him when it was under warranty and for you to make sure that it was in bubble wrapped in a certain type of box and everything. Why aren't they sending the stuff if it's under warranty. They should be paying for whatever it needs to get there to fix it or replace it and send it back. This isn't right.Quote Bought 2 RCA Voyager tablets for Christmas last year. Having charging issues with both. Went to Walmart and was informed that the particular model I bought has been discontinued due to a charging problem... Was told to call RCA. Have not been able to speak with anyone in customer service. Am probably out $$'s and most likely will not get product replacement.Quote This is the second time in 3 years that my son has received this same tablet as a gift. The first one we got rid of because it quit charging. At the time I thought it was something my son did wrong and somehow messed up the tablet. Just got another for his birthday this week. He was able to play on it for two days and I went to plug it in to charge and noticed that it kept popping back and forth between charging to saying please connect to charger and on top of that it was making weird popping noises and had lines running all over the screen as long as the tablet was plugged into the charger... Never again will I buy a product from this company... Wish my mother's husband would have read these reviews before buying this for my son. He is so disappointed... Two days of use and now all these problems... Would be the interested in learning more about your class action suit Justin from California...Quote RCA Tablet RCT6203W46 - I had purchased this tablet last year. Short time after that the keyboard just stopped working and now the WIFI won't connect at all. I did a factory reset and that did nothing but erase all my data.Quote Purchased 2 tablets, after 6 months one would not charge. I was told to send it in for service. I got it back 6 weeks later and it lasted 3 months then would not start up. A replacement was sent to me and I returned the non working one. After 5 months, the replacement stopped working and again was sent a replacement. Upon receiving this one, the charger stopped working the next day and now it's been 7 months and the tablet rest itself and everything on it was lost. Signed back on and all services are getting errors. Did a factory reset and now tablet will not start. These tablets are such garbage that Wal-Mart doesn't even carry them anymore and RCA should not even make them because it's obvious they don't know what they're doing. I will take exception to the above. RCA does know what they are doing. |

Microsoft is ramping up its assault on the Macbook Air with a series of ads touting the Surface Pro 3's superiority to Apple's laptop There's just one problem. The Macbook Air is better. Here's why.But that was two years ago. Here is a more recent story with a similar slant: Microsoft has NFL stars respond to Coach Belichick's criticism about the Surface Pro Belichick made a remark about giving up using the tablet. So the way to make you product better is to pay somebody to endorse it? Does that work? Really? Advice to current MS PR people: In view of recent EVENTS, you need to get your resumé up-to-date If MS needs to get up to date why are you quoting a 2 year old article ? ? Solve : Government is using old computers. Very, very Old.? |
Answer» The full title is: Some U.S. government agencies are using IT systems running Windows 3.1, the decades-old COBOL and Fortran programming languages, or computers from the 1970s.Hey, COBOL was my first computer language. Quote The government is spending more than US$80 billion a year on IT, and "it largely doesn't work," Chaffetz said during a House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing. "The federal government is years, and sometimes decades, behind the private sector."Are they saving money. Do the voting machines still use pooch cards? (Haven't see a pinch card for 35 years. No, it was paper tape.) Somebody said... Quote "When you're still using technology and computer systems from the '70s and the '80s, this is not a problem that started in 2012," he added. "How can you really sit here and tell us this is money?" The article godson to state that... Quote Closing an additional 2,000 data centers, in some cases moving to the cloud, could save $5.4 billion, he said. "We need to definitely get more modern," he said.My question is: What will is cost to NOT spend the 4.5 billion on new equipment'? Do they even have a guess about what it costs to keep using floppy drives? Comments? Gov job I have still uses DEC Alpha systems running OpenVMS. The system is still used because its just about bulletproof. As well as its used in integration with old 1990s era electronics with cards that it talks to that are running 386DX33 and 486DX50 processors over a data bus and serial communications as well as short haul modems that run to other MACHINERY that use this central system of processing information, and it would cost tens of millions to REPLACE the system throughout the country requiring a new custom engineered system, so we maintain it across the country. The DEC Alpha uses a 2.1GB SCSI Hard Drive and this system is a vital part of the businesses ability to process data. I cant talk about any other specifics as for its confidential, but here are specs of what is safe to share without getting into hot water. Additionally systems with old OS and Hardware are fine to operate beyond the normal intended by manufacturer life cycle especially if they are offline immune from hackers and malware. We still use ( Pentium II, III, 4, D ) computers running Windows NT 4.0 thru XP SP2 or 3 as well as have a bunch of old AMD Athlon MP 1800+ to MP 2600+ Dual Processor rack mount servers. Many of these used in clusters so if you lose a system or two, you have the rest of the old team keeping everything going. Most of the cluster systems have their days, and a reboot when they act up you can get SAY another 6 days out of the slice before it acts up again. When it finally acts up to the point that its corrupted, reload the software to it from an image, reconfigure its unique identity which is different from image default, and only replace it if its a problem more frequent than once a week it might act up for a old cluster slice where you have like 18 servers running and its almost roulette as to which one will crash or freeze up next requiring a reboot to get it back into the cluster group. With the 18 servers running we could get by with about 6 running and 12 down if we needed to, but we strive for 100% uptime even though we are working with systems that are over 10 years old which eventually die and I then need to replace fans, power supplies, replace dead RAM stick etc, or hard drive etc. Workstations are Dual Core Pentium HP Business Class SFF with Windows 7 Pro fully patched and very secure. My stance on this is, as long as its safe to do so, and operating costs are low to keep old hardware going, why not run older hardware. Sure it might not be efficient on electricity, but sometimes old computers need to stay paired with old electronics that they work with. Additionally lots of the software was designed around older single core processors and you run into oddities if you try to run that old software on newer OS's. So the OS staying that out of date build is guaranteed to work, but going with a new OS or later SP breaks the software.I'm with Dave on this one. The way that Governments or other entities using old Software or hardware is painted as a negative is rather odd; it's a spin. You can spin it the other way- they are using Proven hardware and software. The costs they are seeing has nothing to do with being out of date and is likely organizational issues that simply won't be resolved by replacing the hardware and software, because it is the processes involved that are likely flawed. Governments are similar to a business. They should avoid spending money wherever possible. For a business, if the software allows them to do business, then it's good enough. Same here. By way of example, our customers woulds till be on the ancient THEOS based mainframe system if it still met their business needs. They refused to move to the new software instead having the old OS migrated to Virtual machines when hardware started to significantly outpace it (32-bit only, no multi-threading, no support for SATA drives, etc). It was only when they finally added one workstation to many and the networking stack of their servers started to basically implode that they started to seriously consider alternatives to having to reboot the system twice every hour. Now many of them are on full windows systems. Have they saved money? No. Does the software do the job better? Not really, and it needs a bit of retraining. I'm of the mind that the "inexhorable forward march" concept where "legacy" systems should be replaced just because they are old is probably powered by the very companies that stand to make the most from it. I worked for Defense Finance & Accounting Center (DFAS), which is part of Defense Logistics Agency (DLA), for many years and left there in 1997. I can tell you no one was using Win 3.1 when I left. All desktop computers were running Windows 95. A year or so ago, I had a CONVERSATION with a young woman who works in there now. And now, everyone has laptops. So, in the federal defense agency where I worked, I gather they are not using ancient hardware. I also know, from talking to another person who I knew when I worked there, that an old COBOL system that was used for decades has been replaced by a new software system (I don't know what programming language the new system is based on). But, the situation probably varies by agency, as alluded in the article. |

Solve : Whcih OS has better native security?? |
Answer» Is any Operating System more secure? I am not even going to pretend to know the answer. Here is a statement that has been echoed many times: If you were a hacker, and were creating a virus or malware to target as many machines as possible and cause widespread attacks, you would focus your efforts on what will create the greatest return. If you’re looking to cause the most damage, and increase your chances of success, you’re going to target the most common computer system. Essentially, Macs are safer because statistically you’re less likely to be infected due to the lower number of viruses built to infect OS X. Then the same lame dubious logic might given to other lessor Operating SYSTEMS Look at this: Lesser-Known Operating Systems: Important to Enterprises and Your Career (Try and guess before you see the link.) Presently, some in the industry are working on ways to make it much harder to do a HACK on a will-designed system. But it is not yet available in the main stream. Anyway, What do you think? EDIT:The might be relevant. http://www.windowsecurity.com/articles-tutorials/windows_os_security/64-Bit-Windows-More-Secure.html This claims a 64 bit system has better security at the machine code level. How do you define secure? https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=secure+definition Quote protect against threats; make safe.I think threats are dependent on who you are, while an attack method is determined on what you use. At work I had to reset someone's email password after they opened invoice90901.jar in an email titled Missing Invoice from a hotmail address. invoice90901.jar stole the email password (or briefly took control of the mail client), because a bunch of junk emails were sent from that email address. The same message we received was sent to hundreds of emails. That address actually reached the account's mail quota for the hour, and after I reset the password, the mail ceased to be sent. Therefore, because we are part of a small business with our own domain, we are subject to random spam emails. (My work email gets random spam too, but my person email accounts, all 7, do not) I believe the attack method was java because it is a universal executable. I do not want to try, but on macos, linux, bsd, what ever else, I would assume if the jar was RUN by the user, the program would have access to the user's config files. Today I think this definition is more fitting: Code: [Select]feeling safe, stable, and free from fear or anxiety.Anything connected to the internet could be a target; I don't think an EXPENSIVE propriety os is going to make much of a difference if someone wants to attack your systems. I think education of using the computer is more important than what os you make your people use. Knowing to not to click on random attachments from emails, and to not install random things found on the internet is more important than os is being used. Granted last year, I tried installing XP 1a on a computer connected to the internet it had a virus on it before I could download and install SP3 on it. As long as the os gets security patches regularly, the operating system for general users shouldn't matter (Windows, or Windows like for the general population) At this point I'm coming back to the original point of discussion:Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 04, 2016, 11:39:58 AM If you were a hacker, and were creating a virus or malware to target as many machines as possible and cause widespread attacks, you would focus your efforts on what will create the greatest return. If you’re looking to cause the most damage, and increase your chances of success, you’re going to target the most common computer system. Essentially, Macs are safer because statistically you’re less likely to be infected due to the lower number of viruses built to infect OS X.Are traditional computers even the most common devices connected to the internet anymore? Rather if I was a hacker, wouldn't I be better off to attack unsupported devices? Smartphones still on old VERSIONS of Andriod or iOS, smart TV boxes (mine hasn't updated since June 2015), pretty much anything that is connected to the internet that is a computer but not used as a traditional computer would be a better target than a os that has teams dedicated to its security. If there was a good copy, paste, and compile worm for a major os, then that os would be my target. Like TheWaffle says I'm of the mind that Trojans and other infections that rely on the user as the weak point are the primary infection vector for the large majority of malware. This is why I've always felt the emphasis on keeping your system up to date with the latest security patches is somewhat misleading; Joe Average isn't going to have their system exploited because they are missing a patch, they are going to have their system taken over when they download and run "Fun screensaver.exe" or run things like attachments on spam E-mail because they don't know better, and didn't give it a second thought when the install instructions said it would be a "false positive" and to just turn off their AV. This would remain the same regardless of the Operating System in use. it's partly the reason for the push for Limited User Accounts. It's one thing if "fun screensaver.exe" can save files to your user profile. It's quite another if it can install or uninstall services or create scheduled tasks or cron jobs.I agree with Waffle and BC... additionally there should be a push to educate users to make them not so gullible etc. One employer for example put in place a web based training with a test at the end of it that you need to pass in order to have computer access. They gave good examples of ways that hackers try to trick you into running something. It goes into great detail with screenshots and asking is this ok to click on or not ok to click on, is this ok to allow to run or not ok to allow to run. Being overly cautious you fail, so the test forces you to really understand what is a threat from what isnt. Best of all the test is dynamic ( adaptive testing ) so as your taking it it looks for a weakness or it tries to predict a weakness in the user taking the test and it will give you a different test from someone else as for in many questions there are more than 1 correct and more than 1 wrong answer, however the question is covered under say 2 or 3 questions to double / triple check that you didnt get lucky and click on the correct answer by luck and you understand the threat or what is ok or not ok etc, and if answered incorrectly you need to know why your wrong vs just wrong so it describes why your wrong vs just saying wrong. Sure you could have someone lucky able to luck out and select the most correct answer twice or three times to get past this. Many people bombed the test. Most thought they could just whiz through it and get it over with to get their computer access back by being overly cautious. Saying they will never open attachments and such, which they need to be able to open attachments as part of their job for proper communications so they really need to know what is safe from a threat and this test which was almost like a Drivers Test for the corporate computer access did a really good job. I passed first shot although I did get one question wrong for being overly cautious. It was a scenario where the e-mail came from a government identity, yes it looked safe because it was from a .gov but me taking the test, I am not expecting this e-mail from this unknown sender and my job would never have anyone of this position e-mailing me with an attachment, so I would just ignore that e-mail. Well it was wrong because while the test was good it wasnt flawless. The test wasnt different between me in my position and someone else in a position that may get e-mail from a person as given by example on the test, so I chose to be overly cautious and not open something that I dont need to open. I can see the reasoning behind avoiding teaching people from being overly cautious as for it would have severe consequences if everyone all of a sudden in the company refused to open e-mail with attachments, overly cautious and now important information isnt getting communicated. Additionally you dont want users who give answers on the test just to blow through it and get their computer access back and then not abide to the policy in place for communications. Additionally it also talked about phone calls from people trying to trick you into downloading a program etc, so it wasnt just pop ups and attachments to worry about but also the cold call hacker trying to get in as microsoft or pretending to be someone in the company needing you to do something for them or share information with them etc.Yep, I'm of the mind that Common sense is the best AV, and just general security. I myself use it without anything else (except the occasional MBAM) scan but I'd never recommend others to use it on it's own. |

Solve : Dell black screen? |
Answer» My mom has a dell all in one type desktop. She knocked it over and now you can only see 1/2 the screen. The computer was expensive for her income. Is this something that COULD be fixed as the computer itself SEEMED to work if we hook up a different monitor. Quote ...hook up a different monitor. You have answered your own question.Maybe part of the monitor screen was damaged and the repair would be to replace the screen. The cost of a monitor repair may be more that the cost of a good used monitor. Check with some local people, or look in a list of thins for sale in your area. Also, on eBay a used monitor goes for about $35 for a 15 inch size. You might even want e to see if thee is a exact replacement monitor for the dell all-in-one. Another idea. Some TV sets have an input for VGA or digital monitor. You might have a FRIEND or family member that has one they are not using. [I was going to suggest you drop the monitor again. But I didn't.] Geek is spot on with this one... there is no sure to a damaged display other than using a different display as you have or replacing the damaged screen. She is very lucky that the hard drive didnt get hurt in the process as for is that happened the system wouldnt be usable without that repaired so she is very fortunate that of all damage it was just the display only. I have a friend with a new laptop that he placed the laptop on the RECLINER and walked away and and his MOTHER sat down on it by accident not looking just sitting and she cracked the display to wheer nothing shows. The solution for him was to connect it to his TV and use that as the monitor with the HDMI port. So the laptop is more of a desktop now, but at least still usable. He cant afford to get it fixed so its no longer a laptop i guess. To be 110% sure i would double-triple check all Control Panel settings...i've seen this before and the display turned out to be fine. Just a thought. Thanks we will give it a shot |
