Does that just MEAN that there not going to then support it cause, if you THINK about all of the STUFF that is out there for it.It's all about the money. Disney is dropping it. My guess is that it wasn't bringing in as much revenue as thought so they decided to cut their losses.

Solve : Looking for study guides for MS server?

Answer»

Hi All,
I am looking for study guides and practice test for the 2012 r2 servers.

70-410
70-411
70-412

Any help finding things that are cheap or free WOULD be great.

Thanks
I dont know of any free versions but Amazon is great for used study guides that you can buy at a fraction of the cost of new. The free guides for those are likely illegal if you FIND any. Cant speak much on the subject as for a friend of mine in college FOUND some illegal ones online 13 years ago for other IT Cert study guides but lips sealed. And I wouldnt go out looking for illegal ones. Its not worth it to chance getting caught with pirated study guides.

Years ago local libraries use to be a good source for guides, but I think most town libraries have fallen behind the times due to the dwindling paperbacks, visitors, and minimal funding. If you have access to a college library you might find a guide to CHECK out for a period of time for free or for just the cost of the membership to the library. I use to frequent a local used book store for most of my guides and other books and they went belly up due to eBooks etc. I still like having a paperback in my hands when reading vs the glow of a tablet or computer to read..... paperbacks dont hurt so much when you nod off with them above you reading and if they hit the floor your not dealing with a destroyed DEVICE, plus nothing worse than low battery and device shutting down right in the middle of a good read. Thanks for the information. I think I will start with Amazon.

Solve : ASUS X401A - RAM upgrade fun?

Answer»

I have a ASUS X401A with 4GB RAM and was thinking about bringing my RAM to 8GB, however after watching this video I am having second thoughts about digging into this ONE. This has got to be the worst laptop construction to ever have to GET to RAM in. This is the first main board I have seen that the RAM upgrade requires just about full disassembly. Most will have an access PANEL at the bottom or remove the keyboard and get to the RAM there. But this one goes to a whole new level of disassembly to upgrade RAM.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06-HlMu7DCY#t=486.10975

In the video this guy has the X501A which is the same setup but he has a better CPU etc. For the fact that this laptop cost me just $279.99 new and 4GB hasnt been an issue yet, however I have seen my available memory drop to lesser than 1GB with like 3.5GB of the 4GB in use when gaming, at some point the 4GB is going to be an issue.

I havent bought the RAM yet to bring this to 8GB, not sure if I want to go to so much EFFORT and chance damaging the laptop in the process. Its so stupid that it requires so much disassembly to perform a memory upgrade. CLEARLY this laptop was designed to run it as is and toss it away when it no longer performs well with the 4GB RAM. Maybe I will feel that the Celeron 1000M will lag before I run out of memory with what i run. The Celeron 1000M actually runs quite well and much better than the Athlon II M300 2.0Ghz Dual-Core laptop I had prior.

The hard drive is still the original HDD and I have been tempted to upgrade that to a SSD. I might do that to increase load times etc, but the CPU is just a Celeron 1000M 1.8Ghz Dual-Core http://ark.intel.com/products/72060/Intel-Celeron-Processor-1000M-2M-Cache-1_80-GHz

Maybe i should just run it until it feels crippled without upgrades and then get another newer laptop, however I am not impressed with Windows 10 and selection of new systems with Windows 7 64-bit is limited to the more costly business class laptops...

Solve : Alternatives to Windows Explorar.?

Answer»

Sometimes you think you need a batch file to arrange stuff in your folders and give them better names. Maybe what you really need is just a different way to manage files and folders.
Look here:
Alternative File Managers For Windows
Quote

These file managers incorporate several functionalities which are not part of the Windows Explorer and hence provided added convenience to the users. If you are looking for alternative file managers then there are few good options which you may consider.
Here is a CLEAVER one:

Not always free, but free to try.
Explorer to me is lacking SEARCH for files, so I use Agent Ransack with Windows 7. Windows XP use to have a search feature built into it and Microsoft removed it in Windows 7. So I used this a lot when trying to find a file that I either know the NAME and dont know where I saved it, or know part of its name in which i can use * wild cards, or can search by file extension with wildcard to track down where a CPP file was saved and list all of them and then sort alphabetically and then look through the list and select it from the search when found.

Prior to this I was using the a batch search to try to locate files on a system which is much slower than Agent Ransack. It appears that the XCOPY instruction doesnt tap into the Windows INDEX service, so it searches from 0 to 9 and A to Z before completing alphanumerically. Agent Ransack taps into the Index Service and can track down files lightning fast.

The XCOPY method of searching I used was something like XCOPY *.cpp F:\search\*.* /S /L >searchresult.txt for writing to a file the result of the XCOPY /S /L result, so i would have to run it and then open the text file when done and then use the find feature in notepad to find what i am looking for of the output if lengthy over 100 matching files etc. Agent Ransack is so much better than an awkward batch file search method that discloses the tree information like this.

Dave, I've found Everything incredible for searches, myself, as long as the search doesn't need to consider text content. Within a fraction of the second I can effectively search All my hard drives for files with names containing certain text. I believe it reads the NTFS MFT directly through a background service. I've saved a lot of time where I've saved a file without looking exactly where I saved it and start rummaging through folders searching for it- STICK part of the new filename in everything and it comes back instantly. Amazing program.

It is bittersweet, however, as it's replaced my occasional usage of my own Search tool from 7 years ago.

Now then, on-topic- Explorer replacements.

I've found that I tend to stick with the default File Explorer. There are a lot of various nifty programs, but oftentimes people eventually decide they aren't worth the effort to use when they have to use the default on other systems anyway. I think this came up in a discussion quite some time ago regarding Console2 which effectively provided command prompt, Bash, and Powershell within a single tabbed interface. (Found the discussion).

Clover is more a modification of the standard File Explorer/Windows Explorer. It basically just adds a Tabbed Interface.

Total Commander I have no idea if this is related to Norton Total Commander. Seems like there are versions going back to Windows 3.1, so if you're looking for a new File Navigation shell on an older system this could be the ticket.

Directory Opus is commercial software but has a free version. I've heard good things and the feature listing certainly is interesting. The price seems a bit steep for what could almost be argued as a commodity. On the other hand, it would still be a better deal than "No Man's Sky".

Explorer++. This one is less like Explorer and seems to draw a lot of it's design from the old Windows File Manager, but modernized.I also use EVERYTHING and think it's fabulous.Cool I will give it a try... thanks for the info on how it would replace my agent ransack process.

How long will it take to index my files?

"Everything" only indexes file and folder names and generally takes a few seconds to build its database.
A fresh install of Windows 8 (about 70,000 files) will take about 1 second to index.
1,000,000 files will take about 1 minute.

WOW thats FAST! Only 1 second, hardware specific stat though, slower 5400RPM HDD and a weak CPU might make this take longer. Additionally 70,000 takes a second and 1,000,000 takes 1 minute. Its non linear ( not exact ) and just a general opinion I would think as for 1 second for 70,000 should take 10 seconds for 700,000 and so it would take FAR lesser than a minute if it only really just took 1 second for 70,000.

1,000,000 in 1 minute is 16,667 files per second, not 70,000.
And at 70,000 per second it should be 4,200,000 files in a minute.

So Windows 8 of 70,000 files should take 4.2 seconds at 16,667 at 1,000,000 per minute

so if its really 70,000 files in a second it should have 1,000,000 completed in 14.29 seconds not a minute. Quote from: BC_Programmer link=topic=157894.msg951787#msg951787 date=1472137954

I've been using Directory Opus (paid version) for a long time and while it's unquestionably more than I (or most users) need, it's also EVERYTHING I (or most users) need. For Everything's Indexing, I just set mine to rebuild my entire index. Across three drives with a total of 3.3 Million files, it took around 40 seconds. At any rate I don't think PERFORMANCE scales linearly. more files means a higher likelihood of MFT fragmentation and of course means reading more of the MFT as well. Really, though, when it comes to building an index- you really only do that once. After you build it initially it uses the NTFS Journal to see changes and update the index.

Total Commander for me...
However if you have a weekend you can get XTree Gold to work on new Win versions...Best file management app i've ever used...

Solve : Shuld you get a cheap domain name??

Answer» This is about Domain Names.
Examples of domains names are:
ATT.NET
BING.COM
YAHOO.COM
The part after the dot is called the TLD.

Beginning dictation.
This is about cheap domains. If you buy a domain name from most of the popular registrars, it will probably cost you about $10 per year. If you buy and for a three-year. They may reduce the price somewhat. However, if you are not sure if you really like the name you choose, you may wish to try something with a much lower cost. If you are willing to use something other than the ordinary dot com tyhle domain, you can save yourself a little bit of money.
So why should it matter? Well, you might have some kind of marketing ideas that were actually require you to have perhaps a number of domain names and is set to round out some kind of marketing strategy you have. Let's say you come up with an idea that would break higher five DIFFERENT websites to round out your marketing plan. That would mean five distinctive domain names for your project. So that might cost you 50 or $60 a year and it made money for you it would be unfair investment. But what if you're trying something on a shoestring and you have no guarantee your plan is going to take off. It would make sense to go for the cheaper domain names,
for a shoestring project.
Recently the authority that controls domain names has given permission to let registrars use some new TLD types that were not available before. Some of the more common types of TLD are COM NET WEB BIZ. And besides those three letter TLD types, there are two letters used for countries and fmore letters used to describe other kinds of things. Examples are: info, shop, show us a number of others. Some of these go for very high prices and some go for very low prices.
Now then, please understand this is not a solicitation or even a recommendation to buy anything. I'm just saying that if you want to experiment with domain names, you might start out by using some cheap names that are available for a year or more.
One of the things you need to watch out for is a very low introductory price followed by a rather high renewal price. I found a website that does a comparison of some of the top registrars in the country along with some of the more popular TLD types and also the real cheap and weird TLD types.
Here's an example: let's say you want to use the EXPRESSION"no-sugar" as a domain name.
Some possibilities would be: no-sugar.com, no-sugar.net, no-sugar.info and so on.
So you might find some registrars settled give you real good bargains on the first two choices, COM or NET for maybe $12 a year but with a special introductory price of maybe just $9 the first year . Well, it might interest you to know that if you went for the INFO type of domain you could get it for about half price and even the renewal price would be much lower .
But you can save even more money if you want to take one of the rather strange new TLD types that are available. It's perfectly legal to have one of these other types when somebody else already has the COM type registered.(Okay, there are a few exceptions about famous names.)
Not having said that, I would recommend you take a look at the following website. Remember, this is not a recommendation or solicitation. In my own private research I found this information to be quite useful in helping me to make a decision about which registrar I might use and which kind of TLD type I would like to try. Actually, after giving it some thought, I think I won't buy anything at all. I'll just stick with what I have. But as for you, maybe you want to do some experiments with having several domain names registered at the same time and save some money.
End dictation.

Comprehensive list of the most cheap (TLD) top level domain names
https://tld-list.com/
Cheapest I have ever hosted a ( non free - non ad paid for ) website was buying a domain through godaddy and then hosting the website myself on a old Pentium 3 era Celeron 500 Mhz running Windows 2000 Professional SP4 many years ago. Did this to have ability to host my website without paying monthly hosting fees and not to be confined to small slice of storage. The system had a 8.4GB Hard Drive and I was able to have as much space as was available to host my own content. Only trick was that my ISP put blocks on the common ports for hosting your own server and so I hosted my server on port 8077 which the ISP didnt block. On godyaddy I just had to put a domain forwarding to my IP:port so that anyone going to www.run64.com would get forwarded to my own web server.

I bought this domain because the name was easy to remember and it was small. I was hoping that someone would want to buy it out towards the end, but my domain name lapsed, so if anyone wants a small easy to remember domain name its available. I bought into the name before 64 bit systems became the norm. Thinking I was buying into a domain name that someone might want to buy out as well as for I listed it up on godaddy for sale but had no buyers at $500 and no one contacting me asking if I'd sell for lesser. So its available if anyone wants a small one easy to remember and might be doing web hosting that related to 64-bit systems or something related to 64 for it all to make sense. I hosted my own website for about 2 years and then pulled the plug on it. Biggest issue was that it costs so much to advertise and get people to find your website and I wasnt willing to dump thousands of dollars into a website that wasnt a money maker to begin with. It was mainly a website with programs I made and redirect links to other peoples free projects that I contacted them asking permission to have some information about tools and programs they have and a redirect link to their download of it that I shared.

I never looked into the actual amount of money saved but the monthly fees to host a website minus the electric bill to host it on a weak celeron processor system that was idle not very busy processing power most the time time, im pretty sure I saved some money since I had about 500MB of programs for download and about 4GB free using Apache Server. I used an analytic program to keep track of how active the site was and it was pretty quiet.

Today if I was to do this again, i would get a electron sipper laptop or Intel Atom desktop so that the electric bill is very small to host it. I think the Celeron 500Mhz was running around 80 watts of power with monitor off. I have a Intel Atom 1.66Ghz Netbook that runs on 13 watts of power that is more powerful and much larger storage and for a website that acts as basically a file server with information for what i was hosting it would be perfect. For anyone just blogging the free websites out there are probably best if you dont mind the lengthy URL that comes with it of which you dont own the domain.

Many years ago I used a free ad-paid for website for hosting called Stormpages that basically was their domain with your I guess you could call subdomain it was something like www.stormpages.yoursubdomain.index.html but had banners with advertising that were annoying at times with blinking junk. After I took a course in Linux in college and worked with Apache Server, I decided to put Apache on Windows 2000 box because I had more control/knowledge of security and hosting for Windows vs Linux. Apache gave me the ability to do it without running IIS which had security vulnerabilities with it and Apache was free and secure by keeping it up to date.Yep, price largely depends on the TLD (eg .com, .net, etc).

A web host is the way to go, running a website via a spare PC from your house isn't very tenable, at least not anymore. Realistically, it's either using a web host, getting a VPS, or building a dedicated server and renting a spot in a data center. (I recently upped my website to a VPS, myself, 10 times the cost (29.99 a month rather than 2.99) but far more flexible (also 10 times more of a pain in the *censored* sometimes ).

As far as building a "successful" website, that seems to depend on one's definition of successful. Personally I aim to just put things that I find interesting or useful and hope it HELPS others searching for info on it. In particular I like using it as a platform to "force" myself to learn new things. I had a "series" where I wrote anagram search programs in a variety of programming languages and compared them and it was a great challenge stepping out of my element and working in languages like D, F#, Haskell, and Scala, or trying to explain things like C#'s new "async await" feature in version 5 (which admittedly I still don't seem to fully grasp...)I ran a hosted web site for a small mom and pop package store. When they had the store I did the updates and ads showing store SALES each week. After the store closed I let the site expire. Anyway it was hosted by a company called asmallorange.com They offer package deals but for the traffic I had was small so I could use the lowest package which was about $5.00 per month.

I just checked and they are having a sale so it would be $2.50 per month.

Solve : OpenDNS succeeded; ISP DNS failed?

Answer»

The cyber attack this week has an interesting revelation. It does matter what kind of DNS used. The big crash on the east coast of the USA was due ,in part, by a weak DNS structure. Here is the Computer WORLD story:
Why OpenDNS succeeded where ISP DNS failed when Dyn was unavailable
Quote

Last week, DNS provider Dyn was unavailable for a good part of Friday. I blogged late that DAY about how a computer using OpenDNS was ABLE to access a particular website, while another computer, a block away and using the same ISP, could not. The good computer was using OpenDNS while the problematic one was using DNS SERVERS from our ISP.

Solve : Can I get windows 10 back??

Answer»

So I've recently had to factory reset my computer after I couldn't get administrator permissions no mater what I tried...

And now I'm back at windows 8...
I downloaded windows 10 with that free upgrade PROMOTION they had last year...

Now I was WONDERING SINCE I had windows 10 would I be able to download load it again for free since I had it already?

ThanksWindows 10 CAME with your computer?
Or, you upgraded from 8 to 10 and did not make a backup?

The correct method is to make an install media ASAP when you get Windows 10 and after you register it you write down the registration code.

Did you not make a 'image' backup of the whole thing?

Install Windows 10 again and when it asks for the key or key, decline . It will let you have limited use of windows 10 for a a period of time.

During that time, find a way to contact Microsoft support. It may be Windows 10 install was already activated and you just need to get the code.

If you’re installing Windows 10 for the FIRST time, you’ll need to enter a valid Windows 10 product key or buy a full version of Windows 10 during setup, for this tool to work. If you’ve previously installed Windows 10 on your device, you should have a digital license and Windows 10 will automatically activate without entering a product key.

Solve : MSI Reliability?

Answer»

I have seen some people on here telling others to avoid MSI products based on personal past experiences (which is fair enough) My question is what MSI product let you down and how long ago, because based on recent reviews from their laptop, GPU's and motherboards they all seem to be quite positive now. Have MSI perhaps had a shaky past? and recovered from it. I'd love to know.Motherboards... many of them that are MSI have been troublesome. I got burned on a socket 478 and socket 775 motherboard.

The socket 478 board had an issue where it would randomly lock up completely or become selectively unresponsive such as I can open task manager and see that the CPU is showing 4% in use of the Pentium 4 and it changed to 8% and 3% and 7% and 10% and 5% etc so it was running and options in task manager worked. Other functions of Windows worked too but launch browser or a video game and its almost as if you never told it to start. memtest86 showed all was well. Hard drive also was healthy. Power supply was swapped out thinking maybe there was an issue even though voltages were all good and no change problem remained. I finally returned it for RMA and got a replacement board after having to pay shipping fees to return it out of pocket. The replacement board had USB issues. It would disconnect and connect devices on its own. I sent this back RMA again. 3rd board new issue. BIOS would not hold settings. Battery a strong 3.12V and jumper not set to clear cmos. Every boot the system was rediscovering its configuration and going back to January 1st. Went to return it to get a refund, as told they could only do a swap for same board unable to return it and get money back or credit towards a different motherboard. Took the $75 loss and just used this board in a system as a server where it doesnt reboot and upon reboot it will go back to new years day. Called this system BadYear as a result of it being such a piece of junk.

Socket 775 Board... I figured maybe I just got bit by a specific bad run with a specific model. How can a company stay in business if all products were trash and so I bought a socket 775 board for a Core 2 Duo build. And once again problems. This time the integrated NIC was having issues where it would disconnect and reconnect on its own. Uplink would come and go. Swapped cable, swapped port to switch, swapped drivers to a newer driver and problem remained. Sent it back RMA and got next board. Next board didnt even post. Sent that back and got 3rd board. This 3rd board had an issue where only half the RAM of 2GB was showing 1GB instead of 2GB. Board supported dual channel and had 4 slots i had slot 0 and slot 2 stuffed. Swapped RAM sticks between slots and still only 1GB. Popped Ram out and looked at the memory slot and all finger pins were ok looking. Borrowed known good RAM from another system and got same results. Moved the RAM to slots 1 and 3 and the system wouldnt boot it gave a RAM POST beep. Run the sticks one at a time and fine, memtest86 showed all was ok with each stick. Stuffed the RAM into slots 0 and 3 and then got 2GB RAM, but lost my Dual Channel configuration because I wasnt able to get slots 0 and 2 or 1 and 3 to work together. Tested slots 0 and 1 for single channel and POST Beep. Ok, so slots 1 and 2 are junk and slots 0 and 3 are ok, so I used RAM with 1 stick at either end in single-channel and got my 2GB. I kept this build just like this because I knew from past history that if I sent this back I am going to get another piece of junk back from them with probably a worse issue.

MSI Laptops ... many of them have been troublesome more recently.

Lots of unstable laptops, lots of poor quality issues, and lots of overheats. I never board a MSI laptop but I have seen peoples complaints in feedback online and it sucks to be them locked into a lemon product and out that much money and having to pay the shipping fees with each RMA to where that $20 you thought you were saving by not buying a better brand that was $20 more is lost quickly in the headache and shipping fees.

I avoid ASRock, ECS, and MSI products!

I got burned by ECS thinking maybe they would be ok for making 3 like system builds on the cheap to make loaner computers to loan to people while I service their computer. They were a total loss. I was not going to give a customer an unstable piece of junk to borrow, and so I ended up buying 3 refurb HP Business Class systems for $120 each instead and loaning those out to customers who cant do without a computer while theirs is serviced.

ASRock I was given a gaming build project by a kid that wanted to save money. The board didnt post. I removed the motherboard and was looking it over and tiny solder balls were falling off the board and rolling around on my workbench. Upon further inspection the board was loaded with tiny little solder balls which are the result of a issue with the flux on the board when it was wave soldered and the lead spits up through the barrels in the board and fall back to the surface and stick and cool, and cause short circuits where they bridge IC legs of surface mount chips etc. Sent this board back and got another. The other board started off fine. Build was not overclocked or anything that STRESSED the board and the VRM smoked on the board in 2 days after the build. Board supported 95Watt CPU and a 95Watt Phenom II was installed. No overclock and no over voltage. Got RMA replacement once again and this time no problems. Then 11 months later the board died after starting to act up freezing up etc.

I Like Gigabyte, ASUS, and Biostar. Biostar I havent had any problems with and I have been buying their boards for inexpensive builds since 2008. If I am building someone a system though I generally buy Gigabyte or ASUS boards as for the computer performance affects my status as a good system builder and I dont want to build people lemons and lose credibility and so that is what I stick with for motherboards.

For video cards I go with EVGA, ASUS, Gigabyte as the top 3 brands.

For RAM I go with Corsair, Crucial, and Kingston as the top 3 brands, however I have also had good luck with G.Skill, Patriot, and some other brands for cutting corners in price.

For power supplies Corsair, EVGA, Thermaltake with 80Plus.

For Hard Drives primarily Seagate, however if Western Digital has a sale I MIGHT buy theirs instead. I have had issues with Western digital drives before and lost data and far lesser issues with Seagate.

For SSD Hard Drives I go with Corsair, Samsung, and Crucial. * Intel is good too but I cant pay the premium for them.I have no experience with MSI. My limited experience is that motherboards ate the most complex piece of electronic equipment have ever seen. One would think tghat a bad manufacturer of such a product would not stick around long.
From Google:
Here's a list of some motherboard brands.
Asus. Accepted as the world's largest motherboard manufacturer, Asustek Computer International is planning on expanding sales by 20% this year and is planning on achieving 50% of the global market by 2014. ...
Gigabyte. ...
MSI. ...
ECS. ...
Intel.

As for MSI, the above reports that MSI is the maker of many other ystem motherboards besides their retail boards.

I'd love to know.

When I worked at a leading etailer, I would say around 75-80% of faulty graphics cards were MSI, which was disproportionately high considering the systems at that time used approx 20-25% MSI cards. In other words their failure rate was roughly 3-4x higher than all other manufacturers we used put together - we're talking Asus, Gigabyte, EVGA, PNY, Powercolor, Sapphire, Inno3D, basically every other manufacturer you can name. Their boards were not so much unreliable as just plain irritating and had a lot of odd incompatibility issues which Gigabyte and Asus boards of a similar price and feature set didn't suffer from. I still sometimes remember their awfully translated warnings that "BIOS must be same size to ROM size!!" when trying to update the BIOS in the vain hope that maybe they've fixed something, anything...and shudder. We're talking a SAMPLE size of high hundreds to thousands of products here, just for reference.
I don't want to go into too much detail as I wouldn't want my remarks to be taken the wrong way, I in no way represent said company and this is just my own opinion.

As far as timescale goes, this was 2010-2011 so perhaps they have indeed improved in recent years but personally I'm not willing to risk it when there are so many alternative brands whose products didn't make a year or so of my life much harder than it needed to be by plain not working PROPERLY.

Solve : Hey eBay! Can you say LEGACY PCI ??

Answer»

Looking for PCI on eBay I found that eBay lumps everything into the same list.

Attention eBay
PCI is not PIC-e

PCI is Legacy PCI and nothing else.

I am unable to communicate with eBay.
Will somebody who knows how get their attention .
Tell them not to put legacy items into the same mix as newer things .

It does matter.
If you think your gonna fix anything on eBay you are delusional...

Most people write their own info...If you use "Advanced Search" you can choose to search for "PCI" and enter "PCI Express" in the "Exclude words from your search" section.

You can also limit your search to the Computers/Tablets & NETWORKING > Vintage Computing category. The "Vintage" section is LESS likely to contain PCI-E and PCI-Express cards.Patio, there just has to be a CH member who knows how to make eBay listen.
Part of the problem is tit is just too easy to confuse PCI and anything else.
Quote

PCI 1.0, the original version of conventional PCI technology, was developed by Intel in 1991. The technology has since been through several revisions and updates and is has been edged out by the newer PCI Express technology. Conventional PCI involved signals traveling along parallel wires from the PCI card to the motherboard. As technology moved more rapidly and graphics quality skyrocketed, the 8-bit capability of conventional PCI was not enough, and it was time for the next generation.
The above is from an eBay article. The article fails miserably to help users make the right choice. PCI-e devices are called PCI devices. Search for just PCI and get PCI-e. Never does eBay help the user understand the difference as respects slot compatibility.
In facr, thee are a lot of real PCI slot compatible cards being sold. And a lot of PCI-e cards also. The older PCI technology is very much alive. For many applications nothing more is needed.

Good POINTS. Don't work. Maybe eBay should have a category.
Too many ways of saying PCI Express.
As for vintage, brand new PCI cards are still being made.

Search eBay for PCI Network Cards
Let me know if you find a way to exude the other kind of PCI.the search:

Code: [Select]PCI Network Cards -("PCI Express") -"PCI-E"
created VIA the Advanced search seems to only show PCI cards. (I can't find any PCI-Express cards in the RESULTS) In the advanced search you need to use quotes around "PCI Express" or else it will exclude items containing either "PCI" or "Express".

had to stick in "PCI x16" as an excluded term for graphics cards.BC_Programmer,
That is great work!
Looking for other cards, one vendor uses the term ...
PCI Exp
So I will add that to my search collections. -("PCI Exp")

Solve : How to manage Phone Numbers.?

Answer»

This is about Smart Phone use.
Here is the problem. my wife and I are both senior citizens and CONTINUE to have problems using cell phones. I am visually impaired and my wife is electronically challenged. And neither of us ever had a course on typing with your thumbs. We were taught to type by using at least nine of are 10 digits.
So basically, is there some way to prepare a phone list on a REAL computer and then downloaded or uploaded if that's the right word, to the phone. We both have about 20 contacts that we like to call from time to time and the alternative is to carry a card with all the numbers your pocket along with the cell phone.
So far our granddaughter is not quite old enough to KNOW how to program phone numbers and the cell phone, but she has no problem using a tablet to go to the Wi-Fi and find the cartoon channel.
Other people around here either don't have the time or the skill set needed to properly program are smart phones so it has a list of the numbers that we need to call right away. Of course, we could always go back to the old-fashioned way, just memorize a person's phone number and use the keypad.
But if there is some way to use modern technology fully to help us old crippled people, any suggestions would be welcome.
Thank you.Friend of mine has an app that he just clicks on the app to have it know when to take voice command and he can say CALL JANE and it will say calling JANE and will dial from whats programmed in the phone. Would something like that work?Numerous references on importing contacts to your phone can be found on the internet. I thought this one might be helpful: How to Import Android Phone Contacts from Your Computer

Shortcuts for contacts on your phone's home screen might also be helpful. For info on this, see Tips and Tricks: How to create shortcuts for contacts on AndroidI have 20 slots on the phone for speed dial....and it's a dumb phone.Which Smartphones do you and your wife have? Android or iOS?

As soybean pointed out, there are plenty of apps out there that will let you import contacts from your computer. On an Android phone, you can import from Facebook, GOOGLE and other places.

On my Android phone (Galaxy S7), I use Contacts widgets that came with the phone to create shortcuts to my most oft called relatives and friends. I can setup shortcuts that allow me to call my most called contacts with a single tap. The phone maintains a contact list that is available to search or scroll thru to call less often called contacts.

Another way to add contacts is when someone calls you, on phones I've used, you can tell the phone to add that number to your saved contacts.

I can also use the voice option but it's often a PITA to use. For instance, telling the phone to "CALL JANE" may work or it may cause you to be prompted for which Jane (Smith or Taylor?) or prompted for Mobile, Home or Work? Then when it finally understands what you want it will say "Ok, calling Jang" or something like that. I haven't had good experience with that option. Thanks to all for the links. I am going to try them all.
I have a ZTE smartphone. The wife has a flip phone from China. I have yet to find what OS it has. It is not a touch screen, but does have a navigation compass.
Here is info from the eBay listing.

So, is your phone also a flip phone? Is the phone in the photo yours? Or, is your wife's flip phone a ZTE?

Edit to correct. The flip phone is for my wife. It is now working,I need put here numbers it it.

My phone is also a ZTE, but a smartphone. I can't see the MODEL number. It is a 4 inch touchscreen smartphone. I have exported the phone numbers to my SD card, but I have yet to transfer them to my wife's phone.
I would not want remove the SIM card again. It is hard to remove and inset rt the SIM in the flip phone. And the flip phone does mot have a SD slot.

So the problem now is o get the phone numbers from the smartphone into the new flip phone. I will check the links give. (One company has a super product, but the trial only does 5 numbers. I have 19 numbers. The livens costs 39.95, which is far two much to pay. The phone itself only cost $25. )

I have gmail accounts. Can that work to transfer phone numbers?

Regarding importing contacts from gmail, this video is a good illustration of the procedure: How to Import your Address Book/Gmail Contacts to your Android PhoneWho's your carrier ? ?
Mine has an online backup service for contacts and pics...
I can simply login to my account via a web browser and transfer all to any device i choose...My wife has Consumer Cellular, because it had the best best in this area. I will check their website. Thanks. I now have a list of the phone numbers on my PC.
But now comes the hart part. I did not know that this model ZTE is not lighted on the AT&T address book application. That is the application that I should use, if I could.

In retrospect,I should have put all contacts onto the SIM card before removing-it. What stupid thing! Now I would remove the card and star over, but that card is so hard to remove. It is a different size and I had to use an adapter.

Well, we will have to enter the numbers by hand. Next time I will remember.. If there is a next time.

Moral: Before you buy a cellphone, check ans see it lets you use regular email and Android applications. Some flip phones are not Android compatible.

Here is something I found:
http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-blank-sim-card.htm
Quote

Others users may want a blank SIM card for cloning purposes. During cloning, the blank card is configured to serve as a complete duplicate of another SIM card. The information on the two SIM cards, including the phone number, are the same. After the process is completed, users may be able to use the previous blank to place calls and have the charges attributed to the original card. The practice of cloning is illegal in many places, however, and blank cards should not be obtained for this purpose.
But in my case it would not be an attempt to cheat. If I recall correctly, the last time I bought a flip phone, which was in Best Buy, the store moved the contacts I had in my older phone to the new one. Something to keep in mind when shopping for a phone.Thank you, Soybean. Your are right on. In fact, the phone I bought online is cheaper in Walmart. Live and learn.

When you buy from a local merchant you can get personal service that can save you hours of frustration. Some will help you even if the phone is not one of theirs, but they will charge a modest fee for assistance.

For us elderly, the flip phone has a nice keypad with a look and feel easy r to use For some reason the market does not have a wide selection of Flip Phones.

Solve : Machine Readable Code: Passport - Check Digits?

Answer»

Hi, I'm writing a report on error control and I'm looking at machine readable passports. I'm looking at the check digits in the code of the second row, and wonder if anyone knows what the probability of the 4 checksums being correct, but the final check digit being incorrect is...? Thanks. Not sure how to calculate for the odds that someones passport would fall into the condition that you wondered about. I would think first of all you would need to know how many total passports exist, and then look at the rate in which passports are replaced and assume that some replaced are due to lost and a percentage of that that arent lost are the actual that have the readability issues. You would get better figures if the old passport that is DAMAGED somehow is turned back in before replacement issued and a record of this maintained to have statistical data to use as a basis for probability.

I have only dealt with check digits in UPC codes, never worked with Machine Readable Passports.

Are there any existing FORMULAS out there or are you having to create your own for this report?

With a passport with a readability issue, if it has an issue I would think just get a new one. So not sure why statistical info is critical. Thinking I am not understanding your SITUATION Quote from: DaveLembke

So not sure why statistical info is critical.
I think his question is essentially mathematical; this sounds a bit like a school assignment. I have the FEELING that the problem would be a trivial one for anyone who understands the 7-3-1 algorithm used to generate the checksums. I am having a look at it. I think the answer is "the probability is zero" but I want to get a feel for the logic.

2nd line of machine readable passport section:
#########CbbbYYMMDDCsyymmddCppppppppppppppCX

1-10 ######### passport number and C (1st check digit)
11-13 bbb nationality
14-20 YYMMDD date of birth and C (2nd check digit)
21 s sex (M, F or <)
22-28 yymmdd expiry date and C (3rd check digit)
29-43 pppppppppppppp (personal number) + C (4th check digit)

X is the final check digit and is applied to positions 1 to 10, 14 to 20, and 22 to 43 on the second line. Thus, the nationality and sex are not included in the check.

My feeling is that if the algorithm worked correctly, (the same one is used to make the C and X characters above) then the final digit will not be "wrong". Check digits are used to spot typing and OCR errors, so if the final digit was incorrect the pasword would always flag an error and be unusable.

ok, so what about the probability of an undetected error occurring? (unreliable detection). What about when numerous digits are changed to give a 'false' positive reading?Checksum and Hash makers have been around a long time. Given the checksum is a small number, there is always the case where the test fails to detect an error. A checksum large enough to have 100% accuracy would be too large to be piratical.
Here is a post that might help .

Solve : New Low Cost Core i3 Laptop to replace my ASUS Celeron M1000 1.8Ghz?

Answer»

Ended up unable to pass up on this deal. A Dell Inspiron 3558 with 2.1GHz Intel Core i3-5015U processor, 4GB of memory, integrated Intel HD 4400 Graphics, and 1TB HDD. This will replace my ASUS X401A laptop running just a Celeron M1000 1.8Ghz with 4GB RAM, integrated Intel HD 2500 Graphics and 320GB HDD.

Got this Dell normally priced at $349.99 at $299.99 on sale and used a $25 gift card that I found when cleaning from a christmas or birthday that went missing to get it for $274.99. Waiting now for it to come up to room temp before powering it on. Then create the recovery media for it first thing after setting up user account etc.

I guess I will be running Windows 10 on it since it comes with it and I dont have any Windows 7 licenses available for it. I still PREFER Windows 7 more, but this laptop will be perfect for the lightweight games and web surfing that i do, as well as now I can DIG deeper into playing with 10 to support it better.

What sold me on this laptop was the fact that I am able to get a brand new Core i3 laptop for under $300 and its Dell which I trust, as well as they didnt skimp on its build as most low cost laptops are feature stripped. Surprisingly it has a DVD-RW drive, 1TB HDD ( *5400rpm however ), number pad to right of keyboard, and its not the slowest Core i3 out there, its a 2.1Ghz with 3MB L2 Cache and ok integrated graphics for LOWER end gaming without problems.

I had money set off to the side for Black Friday to get a newer laptop, and this was too good to pass up and I saved $100 from my $400 budget on a replacement, $125 if you include the $25 gift card that someone else paid for.

Daughter wanted a laptop so I will give her the ASUS with Celeron M1000 1.8Ghz dual-core after I know that this Dell is solid, bug free with Windows 10.

Solve : Alternative SearchEngines. Why??

Answer»

This is a question about search sites other than Bring, Google and Froogle.
Is there a need? Do they do better at keeping your searches private?
Example:
Some things I would never look for. But an issue came up about a very sensitive topic. Now I am thinking, 'If I Google it, somebody could find out what I was looking for censored and embarrass me.' Some using one of the following might be a choice:
AOL
Yahoo! ...
Wolfram Alpha. ...
Ask.com. ...
Yandex. ...
IxQuick. ...
Dogpile.

It is said that the above might do more to hide my work from other people
Is the true?
If you want to search about something and be confidential, i would use a wifi hotspot other than your own internet with a computer that has not been personalized. BEST unpersonalized environment with no private data at the get go is to run Knoppix or another Live Linux environment in a read only state. As soon as the power is flipped off nothing remains. As long as you dont logon to any sites your anonymous in a Linux browsing environment. Linux Mint ISO's also come with a Live Linux Mint environment with Firefox and flash support too, so if you'd rather have Firefox then Linux Mint on a DVD-R is the way to go.

Cant go into further details as for I cant be a guide to hacking here, nor do I want to get legally involved in anything bad that someone does with the info shared. This is about as much as I can share without breaking forum rules and I'd never break them.

No, I would not ask you to give out information that could be harmful

I was thinking about a possible DIY project. In some places some Do It Yourself products are CONTROLLED by local LAWS. I am just curious to see if other people do these kind of things.

I don not want there to be any data would suggest that I do such things.

In some places it is illegal to bury your dead pet in your back yard.
Alternatives are always better than no alternatives.

But (At least some of) the search engine alternatives you mentioned are effectively dead (or not search engines at all- Wolfram Alpha is a Computing engine for finding knowledge and answers, not for finding websites using search terms.).

Currently, users who object to Microsoft and Google as a COMPANY- either ethically, morally, or because they want something to rage against- will use DuckDuckGo as their alternative.

What about contacting the town to see what zoning rules and regulations they have by telephone, you wouldnt have to disclose your name just inquire about it? I had to check with my town about zoning rules/regulations with our chickens and ducks that we have. Found out that livestock poultry was allowed, but cant have anything else without going through a lengthy process of getting a permit and neighbors to agree to a smelly farm near them. I have no interest in having a full blown farm. 18 chickens and 2 ducks are plenty. At times we have way too many eggs getting over a dozen a DAY. Id be happy with just 6 chickens, but wife thought she'd make money on them when egg prices were higher... no money made its barely a wash and you have the people complaining that they can get eggs in the store for $1.69 so why should they have to pay $3.00 for a dozen of ours. Its so not worth the frustration of trying to educate people on the difference between free range farm eggs and mass produced eggs. To me $1.31 extra for farm eggs is because your buying free range quality farm eggs vs quantity mass production egg farms where who knows what chickens are fead or injected with to maximum yield eggs.DaveLembke, Good post...

Solve : Spray on metal to fix keypads?

Answer»

Do they MAKE anything to spray on key pads when they do not make electrical contact that is on the rubber part? No, you get anew device that will last longer.
Did you mean Keypad or Keyboard?
Why do you think a key is not working?
Did you try another keypad or keyboard?

It is not clear if you are talking about a
Desktop Keyboard
Laptop keyboard
Cell phone keypad

Mechanical keyboards with electrical switches on not use very MUCH in consumer goods. The common thing is Chiclet keyboard or a Membrane keyboard
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Membrane_keyboard
Quote

Membrane keyboards work by electrical contact between the keyboard surface and the underlying circuits when keytop areas are pressed. These models were used with some early 1980s home computers, enjoying wide adoption in consumer electronics devices. The keyboards are quite inexpensive to mass-produce, and are more resistant against dirt and liquids than most other keyboards. However, due to a low or non-existent tactile feedback, most people have difficulty typing with them, especially when larger numbers of characters are being typed. Chiclet keyboards were a slight improvement, at least allowing individual keys to be FELT to some extent.
Either way, the actual contact is not with a thing that can be sprayed with metal .
However, a solvent may clean out dirt.
You can usually restore conductivity to the carbon pad by wiping it once or twice with fine-grit sandpaper until it has a dull appearance.

There are also products like this one[/url= to try to restore the conductivity as well. Those are geared more towards the carbon COMPOUND on the PCB itself. Will tryI had issue with an old game controller, I pulled it apart and used 90% alcohol to clean the carbon pads but was DOUBTFULLY sure to also clean the electrical contacts the pads are pressed against. That seemed to work for me but I know it is not a long term solution.

Solve : Android Smartphone: Move data to SD card. -How??

Answer»

I got a new big Android phone that I love. Nice big screen. Brut I can not GET it top move data and programs to the SD card. I put in a 8 GB SD MICRO chip in the sloty and it just does not seem to want to use it.
Any ideas?

It is a Dragon Touch E87 and already has 16 GB internal.
On the back is www.tabletexpress.com WEB site.
Generally speaking, apps can only be stored in internal memory. Data such as video, music, photos, etc... can be saved to the SD card. Since not all devices have a SD card available, the default is to always use internal storage but most apps should be able to be made to use the SD card. For instance, on my phone, I can go into the camera settings and have the ability to tell it to use Internal storage or the SD card to save photos and videos. Google, who owns Android, seems to exercise excessive control over Android device users and it's frustrating. My phone has 8GB internal storage. I have a 16GB SD card installed and I hate not being able to move apps to the SD card. This is particularly true for apps that came pre-installed on your phone, and it's particularly true for Google apps, based on my experience. You may find a few of those ORIGINAL apps (probably non-Google apps) that can be moved but, like strollin said, apps generally cannot be moved. You can go into Settings, Apps, and go down through all your apps and SEE whether any can be moved, if you want to do so. And, for new apps you download and install, you may be able to elect to install some of them on the SD card. I currently have 5 apps on my SD card but they are all apps installed AFTER buying the phone.

Solve : eBay Windows 10 Prices. Bogus??

Answer»

Does this make you angry?
Do a search on eBay for Windows 10 product key.
Skip the ones that include DVD. Look for product key only.
Here is a screen shot I just made today
(see attachment.)
Load the screenshot, There is enough detail that you can see the prices are all over the place. How? Why? Does eBay never look at any of the things?
Tell me this is not happening...

It's unscrupulous recyclers selling keys from scrapped machines, they attempt to get around regulations by claiming in the small print that you can collect the hardware from them. The key is still OEM and therefore installing it on different hardware is against the EULA.Thank you.I did not sport the fine print.
Yes, OEM has to stay with the hardware.Just a matter of time before the counterfeit disc's make their way online too. Be very very careful when buying an OS through ebay. Friend showed me a disc he got for Windows XP years ago off of ebay and it looked LIKE the real deal BUT the hologram on the disc for XP was blurry and not quite right. On install of XP no key was needed even though a so called key was on the yellow label with the booklet. Looking into the build it had a script file that ran that auto authenticated itself to crack it. He paid $75 for it thinking it was someone selling a unopened Windows XP Pro for just $75 when the price was like $139.99 at the time to buy elsewhere. So the Chinese got $75 from him. Later when Microsoft released the windows genuine advantage and his system flagged immediately as a counterfeit and he had to throw that disc away and buy a new OS for it and build it back up clean. This time he didnt buy it off of ebay!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Genuine_Advantage

With the DIRECTION of electronics, computers, and antipiracy efforts... Im surprised that they havent come up with a way to make a chip that cant be duplicated and put the OS on that with Boot ROMs that are these days large enough to hold GIGs of data. The chips are Read-Only to the system itself so they cant get infected. The Write-Line is only physically accessible to flash to a newer patched VERSION of the OS by someone who physically has access to the computer, but otherwise the OS runs same as a Live Linux OS which is protected from infection due to Read-Only. Personal Data, Software, and Games can still be on a drive. It would be almost a Console like computer similar to a Play Station 3 where you can yank the drive pop in another and just boot it and the OS is on the main board. The drive is then formatted and joined to the system and ready for software installation. I havent heard of anyone cracking Play Station 3's and selling them ... although you always have your emulators which aren't an exact copy of the ROM, but a hacked way of getting the software/games to run on different hardware etc. The OS this way would be officially paired with the motherboard. .... Only catch to this is that... if not socketed, the motherboard would be locked to only that OS, and so computers would be like iPhones where to get newer OS you have to buy newer device/computer.

To integrate say 32GB of SSD that has its write line disabled to make the OS Read-Only and immune from infection wouldnt be hard to do. Would just need Microsoft to back it and make a means for the software and games to not be on C: or say the OS is on B: which is never used anymore, where A: is reserved for the oddball floppy legacy support. However to protect the 32GB integrated SSD from a hardware hacker duplicating it is another challenge, but to run it they would need boards that support it and so the piracy issue can also be solved by the fact that no NON-OS boards supporting that Chip are AVAILABLE, and an alternate board is made that supports Linux and other OS's but is drastically different to where you cant yank the chip off one board and add it to the other type that is for all other OS's. My first thughtwas that this has to be fake.
One wouod thin that intimeeBay woul crack down on this stuff.
After a while, I planto come back to this thread if I learn somethning new.

Meanwhile, if anyubody wants to JUT try Windows10, MS will let anybody try it befsore you have to buy the product key. This is a big step for Microsft and it is drawing more people into Winmdows 10.

Sitll, it is hard to find a retail version ofWinmdows 10 under $110 at major stores.
From a Googlke search:
Quote

Microsoft has released its official operating system prices and confirmed that Windows 10 Pro would sell at $199 and Windows 10 Home would cost $119. After running the system and the user needs to upgrade from the Home edition to the Pro edition, customers will be shelling out $99 to upgrade to Windows 10 Pro Pack.Jun 5, 2015
Buat the search also includes an Ad that sayhs "MS Windows 10 Pro $75.00" and I don't get it. These Google searches lack inteligence.

Microsoft set the prices of their software so if you see it significantly cheaper than the RRP you should be very suspicious.I did read that veterans and military can get discounts on Windows 10.
Also, some educational groups my get either a discount or free. Not sure about that.

Microsoft is adding a new Windows 10 variant to its Anniversary Update line-up and temporarily disabling Cortana in its new and existing Education SKUs. Here's why.

Myself, I think disabling Cortgana is a bonus. When I was in college many years ago there was a website called Gradware and sharing with them your drivers license and document showing that your enrolled in that college was enough to prove that you were a student. I got about $3000 in software for only $600. Windows XP Pro I got for $59, I got Visual Studio .Net 2002 edition which was like a $999 software package for just $109, Office XP, also got some others like Macromedia Studio MX and anything else that was a bargain on heavy student discount. I bought pretty much any discounted software I could get that I would like to mess around with on the cheap.

Solve : Seven Forums Rant!?

Answer»

SevenForums.com is absolutely ridiculous. I am spreading the word, I do not recommend people join seven forums the moderators deleted my thread for stupid REASON. I really thought I was helping by telling people about useful program tweaking.com windows repair program. Some bs rule that you can't promote whatever. I'm not promoting anything I'm not getting paid I'm just recommending people a program that helped me and then I tried posting thread again and the mods gave me a warning of ban. I did not give a crap I was so ticked off I posted nasty vulgar stuff to say the least. The moderators are unbelievable now I'm almost afraid to help people on forums now. I thought it was a great thing to do but really it was not You would have received the same treatment here. Generalized "repair" tools tend to be particularly onerous to verify as legitimate without actually installing the program; just by looking at the WEBSITE I don't get the impression it is much different than crap like "Advanced SystemCare".

The reason it's hard to verify is because it is because the companies who sell that crap always employ armies of spammers who spam forums talking about how great it is- something which forum moderators will always remove, thus your issue.I've been an active member of Seven Forums since 2009, recommend software all the time and have never had an issue with the admin/mods there. Not SURE what exactly what you recommended or posted but if it had anything to do with hacking, password bypassing or anything like that, it surely would be banned from there. Agreed...been there myself about the same length...and personally know 2 of the Admin/Mods....

If you got banned you deserved it.

And coming here to bash them does not cast you in a good light at all.Quote from: patio on October 10, 2016, 08:31:08 AM

Their forum rules don't say "You can spam, advertise, and promote safe PROGRAMS" they literally say "No spamming, advertising, selling, or promoting products or other sites."- it is rule #3 in their forum rules.

So you broke the rules, got a warning, and threw a childish tantrum that got you banned. Congratulations. But you weren't content with that- you decided that you needed to warn the world that the forum doesn't allow childish, immature behaviour, by copy-pasting this "rant" to over 6 other forums.

It's unclear what you expected. You've received much the same feedback on the other half-dozen forums you've posted this 'warning' on.

Solve : RAID Hard drive?

Answer»

This is the board that I put into my new game RIG, based on suggestions here an kind of happy with the performance thus far. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131873

What I want to do now is implement some form of RAID on my drives, granted I have a 2 TB drive on order and now currently, have a 1.5 TB don't seem like it was enough space. I want to make the 2 TB the main drive and the 1.5 an extension of that drive. The board only allows for 0/1/5/10You WOULD really need both drives to be the same size and by using RAID with no redundant disks then if either of your 2 drives fail you will lose all your data. You're better off just having them as 2 separate disks and spreading your data between them.Quote from: camerongray on October 13, 2016, 12:48:44 AM

That is kind of what I thought but, I wasn't sure if I could get away with different size's or not. I guess that I can install FILES to say like D Drive an run it that way but, wouldn't that make it run slower? Course, since it is new hardware probably not as bad as if I were trying to do it on a older machine.I mite get another 2 TB drive, later on since, that thus far, the case can kind of accommodate it despite the video card. Would everything like my Key's be all right, WINDOWS Activation and Activated Games?I'd still always suggest just having them as separate drives, it'll be no slower than using a single drive. Using RAID 0 on its own (i.e. split data across 2 disks for capacity and performance) doubles your chance of complete data loss. The only time I would use RAID is where there is enough redundancy to handle a drive failing with no data loss. That mean then I would need 4 additional drives likely, was wanting to replace the case to this unit though If he takes frequent backups redundancy shouldn't matter. While he does double his chance of total data loss, with a loss of a single drive, a backup will prevent this. A gaming machine usually won't have ANYTHING mission critical on it (games), so it can probably spare some downtime when one of the drives fail.

What exactly is filling most of your disk space? Can it be downloaded again? Assuming it can.
You could set up 2x2tb drives in raid 0, and use the 1.5tb drive for automated backups of files that couldn't be re-downloaded in the event of a drive failure.

Solve : making a rain room?

Answer»

I'm trying to figure out how to set up the hardware to play rain sounds in my bedroom-for sleep and relaxation and ideally just have it on all the time so I don't have to start things up when I go in there. I'd like it to be as efficient and small as possible. I do have extra computers that would work but I was trying to play it from an unused smart phone that would plug into some powered computer speakers but it doesn't seem to work as yet. This setup would be small and low power. Am I missing something like is a smartphone not a strong enough voltage to drive the speakers? How about an iPod?Do the speakers you refer to have an external power source? I doubt any smartphone provide enough power to effectively use computer speakers unless the speakers have a separate power source to power them.

Based on my experience, I believe I would get bluetooth speakers to work with the phone. I have a bluetooth on-ear HEADSET I use with my smartphone and tablet computer. With my headset, I can affect volume with a combination of volume control on the phone or tablet, and the headset. I imagine volume control with bluetooth speakers could ALSO be controlled by both phone and a volume control on speakers.

But, Bluetooth is not the only option, ACCORDING to http://www.crutchfield.com/S-BtDkyx3mnV2/learn/10-ways-to-get-great-audio-from-your-smartphone.html
The speakers do have a power xformer but they don't seem to work which is funny because they used to and haven't been touched since then. Take a close look.

The iPhone and other phones use a connector which differences from speakers.

yes i have a dumb question is there anyway to contact facebook and make sure they get the email because i have tried every email there is for them and they wont answer BACK and i am wondering if they even got the email
has anyone ever had success on getting facebook to respond to anything or notHow long have you given it before determining they arent getting back to you, and have you used their customer service method of asking for help or are you using a different mean through some e-mail address found on google that might not be their contact method?

IVE never contacted them myself, but curios how long you WAITED for answer and if you followed the customer service measures that they have in place or are using a e-mail address that might not be the one that is monitored for help. If you sent an e-mail and it didnt come back as undeliverable then it went there. But no guarantee that it was opened. You can only know if it made it to mail server and a valid e-mail address THATS all. From there someone has to CHECK and respond to e-mail.You might visit https://www.facebook.com/help/community/ and seek an answer there.

Solve : incoming e mails erratic wih incredimail?

Something has GONE wrong, I can send myself an e mail but it never arrives in my inbox, and other incoming mail will appear in any place in the list, I have checked with my server and all is as it should be, and incredimail support is not very helpful. Any ideas anyone, it is driving me nutsAre you WANTING g to send from a mobile devise to your own account?
For those times when you need to send to yourself, bet another e-mail account.
You should be able to send to yourself by using a new w-mail account.
No Geek I send a letter to myself to check the system is working ok , in this case it isn't O/K. Note , my message appears in the sent items, but never reaches the inbox. Would it be a good idea to DUMP incredimail? if I did what is the best mail for windows 7 with Chrome. There are a number of e-mail services.

Gmail
Outlook.Com
Yahoo Mail
Aol Mail
Zoho Mail

Icloud Mail

Of course, the decision is yours. Great lot of help you lot were, I downloaded outlook, what a disaster , the most useless load of rubbish I have EVER encountered on my computer. seems no one here is going to help. You have OPTIONS. You can:
Choose an e-mail service.
And / Or
Choose an e-mail client.
My favorite client is Thunderbird. But here areothers.
A short list of clients:
Image result for free email clients

Mozilla Corporation. Mozilla Thunderbird. ...
Opera - Free Email Program. Opera Software. ...
Mailbird. Mailbird. ...
Windows Live Mail. Microsoft, Inc. ...
Pegasus Mail. David Harris. ...
IncrediMail - Free Email Program. IncrediMail. ...
Mail for Windows. Microsoft, Inc. ...
Mulberry. Heinz Tschabitscher.
Most email client swill work with most email services.

Also, you can just buy your own e-mail service very cheap. I have one for my private use. Whene3ver I want, I can give myself a new user account.
Of course, you pay for it and have to dote maintenance yourself to keep the cost down. It will host your about $35 a year to have a vertebral service with about 100 accounts and each account limited to 200 MB of storage. Or more storage with few accounts.

Also check with your ISP. Most have some kind of e-mail serve.

Solve : 158 GFLOPs - Added up all my computers according to Asteroids project?

Answer»

I was looking around trying to figure out why a Intel T7500 Core 2 Duo 2.2Ghz was running Asteroids so well. I came across this page here and it sparked my interest to see what I had for computing power, which CPUs scared better in GFLOPs than others and then I pieced together a list from best to worst processing power.

https://asteroidsathome.net/boinc/cpu_list.php

Came up with 157.99 GFLOPs if I ran all systems and SPUN the power meter off the house faster than National Lampoons Family Christmas.

GFLOPs/T is Total "Average" GFLOPs for that CPU as measured by the benchmark that is run as part of BOINC before it issues work to computers to crunch. GFLOPs/C is per core.

Solve : Can't hi-lite handles?

Answer»

Hi, I SOMETIMES frequent some boards where people COMMENT in certain area and others reply to that comment. I USED to be able to hi-lite the original username and see what else they posted. Another page WOULD pop up and t would show that. Then, some years ago, it stopped. Well, I now find out that the name is still hi-liting, just not for me. For me, the persons user name is just as you see it like this .,......John....... Click on it and it does nothing. HOWEVER, some people are able to click on it and it hi-lites it and brings them to a different page with all of that person's posts. Not for me. I've tried five different browsers and it still doesn't make a difference. Why can some people hi-lite a name and it works and it doesn't for me? Help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Solve : Optimize Windows for better performance.?

Do a Google on:
Optimize WINDOWS for BETTER performance
And find lots of advice. But some of it is now out of date.
From MICROSOFT:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15055/windows-7-optimize-windows-better-performance
Above is for Windows 7 and is better good for any Windows system.

Now for Windows 10 see this:

Or this:
http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/26120-optimize-performance-windows-10-a.html

I see that they put things in different order. Some say check for malware first. Well, of course, that is a given. But others say you need to look at start up programs that want to reside in memory.

And they still say fragmentation is important. But if you have SSD it does not matter anymore.

What do you think? Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 06, 2016, 10:03:22 PM

These are maybe valid if you are experiencing performance issues or running on outdated HARDWARE however I've never performed any sort of "optimizations" on any of my Windows machines and they all run fine! With PERHAPS one exception, these recommendations have been valid for every version of Windows since 3.1. Solve : Writing in Binary?

Answer»

Hello All,

First off, If this is the wrong area, Please let me know. I've searched all other topics and feel my question is best SUITED here.

I've been confused on is that I understand that 256 Decimal is 100000000.

My question is that, am I suppose to write it as 100000000? or Since it goes into a second bit, I guess is the WAY to say it, that it should be written as 0000000100000000?

Please let me know, and I'm sorry for the silly/newb question.
1 Byte is 0-255, so 2 Bytes are needed to get the range of 256 - 65535

so

00000000 11111111 = 255

and

00000001 00000000 = 256

and

11111111 11111111 = 65535Binary can be expressed using no more digits than needed. You would not write 0001000 in decimal if you MEANT one thousand. It is common to prefix a decimal number with a zero and a lower case b.

However if you are dealing with (for example) nibble, byte, word (4,8, or 16 bits) SIZED chunks of data you would pad with as many leading zeros as necessary e.g.:

Bit: 1
Nibble: 0101
Byte: 00000101
Word: 0000000000000101
Thank you for the clarification. I really appreciate it!

Solve : In need of Internet DoD certificate help.?

Answer»

Hello, I made the mistake of deleting my internet certificates that allow me to access government websites. I didn't have them SAVED or anything and my CAC card just will not place them like it did the first time I used it. I use WINDOWS 10 and internet explorer 11. Any help will be appreciated.I'm thinking of just factory resetting my laptop and starting from scratch if no one replies soon.My I suggest that you make a backup plan now, if you have not done so.
It is a poor practice to delete files if you do not fully understand what they do. Having a versatile backup plan can help. If you delete something you need, you can get it back from your backup device.

Also, in a few cases you can recover a deleted file.
Quote

Three possible ways to restore deleted files from hard drive
Recover deleted files from Windows recycle bin.
Recover files from your backups.
Recover deleted files with data recovery software.
Launch EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard and select the file types you want to recover.
Yes, that is an ad for a PRODUCT. But they offer a free trail.
http://www.easeus.com/datarecoverywizard/recover-deleted-files.htm
How to Recover Deleted Files & Folders from Hard Drive

Note that the above works better if you already have some kind of backup method.
Myself, I would boot up from another device** or partition an TRY to rover the file from a different instance of the Windows system. But you may not have to do this.
They say to boot from another drive.

Now in your case, I would recommend you make a backup of your existing system on some kin of external hard drive. Or just clone it to an external drive.

** Use Microsoft's own Windows USB/DVD download TOOL to create a bootable drive you can install Windows from. You'll need a Windows installer ISO file to run this tool.

Solve : Any recommendations for a cheap tablet??

Answer»

Can anyone recommend an inexpensive tablet that can be used for studying. Mostly for things like reading Kindle/Ebooks/PDFs, browsing, and watching movies/lectures. I would like to do some light gaming as well so I'll need the ability to access Google PLAY store for my apps/games so if rooting is necessary that needs to be taken in account. Also I'll be using it where it could get banged up a little (gym/cycling), so I would like to keep it under $100 so I don't feel bad if it breaks. Hardware wise, I only need it to last a year and a half while keeping up with software just enough to not be slow but at the same time not be out much if I have unseen accident at the gym.

Thanks guysYour question seems to be very broad. Almost anything nowadays can access the Internet, even some coffeemakers now access the Internet to order more coffee.

But let me be more serious, I imagine you're interested in mostly just having access to the Internet. One of the best deals you can get nowadays is to find a good quality smart phone that has a large screen and find the best plan that will allow you to have data on your plan. One place to start is to look around in your community and see if there is a store called PCS Metro. They are a part of T-mobile and sometimes they offer the best help for people that are not sure of exactly what to get. They've been a great help to me and my family.

Now, having said that, you can also get good deals from AT&T and Verizon wireless. They all are very competitive.

Yes, you did ask for a tablet and not a telephone. But what I'm trying to tell you that if you consider the cost of your Internet CONNECTION and the portability then you will consider the possibility of a tablet that is also a smart phone. These items have a very low price and perform almost as good as a regular computer for just general web surfing. And believe it or not, they are excellent for watching just a plain movie or TV show over Netflix or who or any of the other streaming websites. By the way, some of the Internet companies now let you stream movies over major sites without paying extra for data or usage. This can make a big difference when figuring out the relative cost of your total Internet experience.

Not getting to the exact thing you asked for, there are lots and lots of cheap laptops out there. If you go beyond just the Apple and Windows computers, you can find some real bargains in the android devices. Typically an android device can be price all over the entire range of cheap to medium too expensive, depending on your wants.

You also might check out stores in your area that deal in bargain prices. Here in the US such stores would be best by, Target and Walmart.
Local retail stores are now becoming an important asset in buying the red thing for your computing needs. They often have very liberal return policies and exchange and update policies. In some cases you can buy a cheap item, try it out, then come back in a couple of days and exchange it for something that sells for a higher price. This is something to look into before you buy. The retail chains are now competing very closely with the ONLINE stores.

One of the cheap tablet you can find this made by RCA. This tablet usually has a 10 inch your 11 inch screen and a detachable keyboard. The keyboard is independent of the tablet and you don't have to have the keyboard when you go traveling. Unless you want to. Both the tablet and the keyboard have rechargeable batteries.

Similar products are made by others and the prices vary a lot. You set a price limit of about $150 you will do real well. If you drop below $100 for a cheap tablet, you might find some disappointment. I got a cheap phone tablet only to find out that it cannot do 4G data. It is limited to 3G data. That is very frustrating because I used to do some downloading using a 4G service and now I can't do that because I got rid of my old phone and bought this new one that I thought I could USE in its place. So you live and learn.

These are the best recommendations I can make at the time. I don't think you want a Windows notebook if you looking for the lowest possible price. You'll have to go with some type of android device.

EDIT: Please excuse typos. And do not buy Amazonian Kindle. It is too much controlled by Amazon. Some of the best deals now are not brand names. I think the thing to do is buyh from a local store that has a liberal return policy. They know some of the stuff is junk, so they are willing to offer a trade-up option if you return the item right away. Otherwise, using the Warranty option really sucks a lot.
There are a bunch under $100 but games will be limited due to weak processor.

*They are all fragile so I would leave it at home vs bringing it to gym or a place of risk of damage. If you want music just get a MP3 player or something vs putting your tablet at risk of being destroyed or stolen.Quote from: internalizedbyte on September 19, 2016, 11:53:19 AM

Given the range of usage you have stated, I think keeping this purchase under $100 is probably unrealistic. But, I admit, I haven't looked much at tablets in that price range. I bought a Samsung Tab A 8" tablet about 5 months ago. The typical retail price then was $200 but I got it on a special sale for $170. I also bought a protective case which holds a bluetooth keyboard. I think a protective case would be a wise investment for you since you want to take it to the gym, and, I presume, you'd be taking it with you quite often as a student. My Samsung tablet has a basic edition of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. And, I can access files created on my computer via a version of Microsoft OneDrive that works on Android tablets.

You might also consider the Samsung - Galaxy Tab A 7", which is currently on sale at Best Buy for $120. I believe the 7" model does not have the Microsoft Office components. It has 8GB built-in memory, compared to 16GB for my Samsung - Galaxy Tab A 8". But, with both models, you can add a microSD card for additional storage. I'd recommend Asus ZenPad C 7.0. It's around $80 and though the functionality is limited somehow but again what more can you ask for at this price.

My procedure for WRITING something I will want to print is: I WRITE in word pad, save it with a name as an RTF in Document. I can then print it from document. Now I have done something wrong and when I press the print key the RTF is changed to XPF document and it will not print. I would appreciate help if you can understand what my problem is. Sorry to be so long in answering your post but I have been busy. I took my computer to a repair shop and they got my computer in workable shape. It still has problems but I can get along with it as long as I use Google Chrome as my browser instead of INTERNET explorer. I still might get a new computer for Christmas. Thanks for all your help in the last few months. Bob

Solve : My Anldroid can not get to Google Play?

Answer»

I can not get into Google Play Store.
The tablet has android 4.2.2 and came with a default browser.

The default bower on my RCA table t is no longer supported. But there is not way to get another. Unfortunately, I did not download an alternative browser before.

Odd, I can get into many web sites. But Google will not let me into the play store because it says the browser is no longer supported.
So far, all the browsers I can think about are only in the play store.

So I am locked out. So I am ASKING for help.

How can I get any kind of Android browser without going into the play store?
Is there any other download method?

wife has older android 4.0.4 and play store worked fine. I used it 2 days ago to CPU-Z to see what she has for an ARM cpu and its just a single core. Must be something with the RCA tablet vs version of android.

If you can get to google on the older browser search for Chrome for Android and follow that, it might let you install that without the google store.

CNET also has it for download and install too: https://www.google.com/#q=chrome+for+androidWas Google Play previously accessed via the browser? On my phone it seems to be a separate App ENTIRELY, but it's on Android 6.0.1.Several weeks back it was working alright. I deleted some d files I thought were not needed. I do not know if this is the real cause of the problem.

Right now I am looking for other websites that download Android Apps. I am hoping to find a download site that has Firefox or Opera for Android. So far no joy.

Likely the issue right there...Must be the case.
I just did the factory reset, lost most of my STUFF, but got Google play back.
It seems to work OK.I got into the play store with a different ID and am now downloading stuff.

You can access Google Play within the browser on your regular PC and then when you find an app you want, click "Install" and it will install it on your tablet. If you have multiple Android devices registered with the Play Store, it will prompt you to select which device you want the app installed on.Quote

I see what your sayin, basically adding that app to the google account at the PC level, and so when the android connects to google its sync's and updates to reflect your account among all devices and so the app should pass down through that update. Forgot about that ability. Its a work around if he isnt able do it from the tablet.

DaveLembke,
I solved the problem with a hard reset. In the settings there is a place to restore factory settings, This destroys all data and added programs. It even destroys the Wi-Fi settings. When it restarts, it asks what language your went. So, I had to GO do all the stuff you do when it was new.

Amway, it is back to normal now. But I have to install my FAVORITE apps again.
You sell Amway now ? ?

Solve : Bleeping Computer Sues Enigma Software. Why??

Answer»

This headline is from Bleeping Computer
Bleeping Computer Sues Enigma Software for ALLEGED long-running Smear Campaign
Link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/announcement/frivolous-lawsuits/bleepingcomputer-sues-enigma-software-for-alleged-long-running-smear-campaign/

What is this about? Does it matter? Who is Enigma Software

Do you think Enigma Software had a Smear Campaign toward Bleeping Computer?
Inform me. Enigma software makes crappy software.
somebody on the Bleeping computer forum says "This software is terrible"
Enigma software sues bleeping computer claiming it is a smear campaign against them. They decide it is a good idea to create web sites, web pages, and register DOMAINS USING the "Bleeping Computer" name and associating the name with malicious software.
Bleeping Computer counterclaims based on that "good idea".

That's the long and the short of it.Interesting.... Looked up that company to see if they were based outside of the USA and surprised they have a location within the USA. From what I read I expected it to be a company that felt it was immune from the law acting safely over seas in a negative manner. Not very smart on their part. Hoping this doesnt become a situation where whoever has more money to drag this out wins vs proper penalties paid for WRONG doing. Money has a way of buying people and businesses out of trouble and those with money know it and USE this against those who dont. They moved off shore shortly before the litigation started...they are scum.

Course now they'll likely start gobbling up CH domains...

Solve : Windows 10 Anniversary Update problems? (Windows 10 Version 1607)?

Answer»

So I spent the last 3 days trying to install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and finally figured out the right combination to make it work.

Google brings up multiple Microsoft help topics and threads but there is no single solution so here is what I did that finally worked.

The errors:
Code: [Select]0xC1900101 - 0x20004
The installation FAILED in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_RECOVERY_ENVIRONMENT operation

0xC1900101 - 0x20007
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during INSTALL_DRIVERS operation

Note: This is actually a new operating system so BACKUP anything you don't want to lose just in case.

The fix if you are running Windows 10.

 • Download the Windows 10 Anniversary Update version 1607 ISO File from this page (scroll down a little).
 • Download USBDeview (scroll way down).
Next unplug all peripherals. HDMI, printer, USBs, etc. I have a laptop and the only thing I left PLUGGED in was the Logitech wireless receiver for the MOUSE and keyboard.
 • I found out the hard way that just unplugging the peripherals isn't enough even if you restart the computer with them unplugged.
Now open USBDeview then right click and select 'Uninstall Selected Device' for everything but your wireless mouse and/or keyboard if you have those.
 • Restart the computer.
Now open the Device Manager and disable everything under Network Adaptors.
 • Again I found out the hard way that just disabling the internet connection in the system tray or in the Network and Sharing Center isn't good enough. Use the Device Manager.
Now go to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update ISO file and double-click it and it will begin to run.
 • When it gets to the 'Get important updates' SCREEN select 'Not right now' (you don't have an internet connection) then click Next.
Follow the rest of the instructions and hopefully it will complete the update like mine did. It will take a while but after failing about 10 attempts I didn't mind waiting a while for it to actually finish.

More info from MS that helped me a little but nothing actually worked until I did it my way.
What a nightmare...Agreed. While searching for a fix I noticed these errors have been happening since the Windows 7 to 8 upgrade. I want to BLAME MS but I'm putting it on the manufacturers. I have a HP Pavilion g7 that's 3 years old. It's a popular model but HP doesn't have it listed in the Anniversary update tests or are there any OEM updates for this model. Obviously they aren't testing "outdated" systems.

Many thanks to Nir Sofer though. Over the years USBDeview has got me out of quite a few USB problems. His collection of tools are proving to be timeless.

Solve : Got a Hackathon invite?

Answer»

Was looking through my e-mail today and SAW an interesting invite to a hackathon. Think I am GOING to enter to see what its all about but I dont have the time to put into coding to try to win the prizes. Looks like its a 15 day event and based around a new movie warner bros coming out called The Accountant. Figured I'd share this here in case anyone else is interested in this sort of thing. Watching the trailer to the movie, I'm sort of lost as to how this movie has anything to do with hacking but it looks like he Ben Affleck manipulates numbers I guess to cook the books and more.

I participated in several hackathons during University and most of the fun was the atmosphere working with others and spending a short period of time like 24/48 hours with almost no sleep on something that will probably break hilariously right as you are going to present it (like the time we built a thing that had a feature that GENERATED a word cloud from live tweets in a geographical area. This feature having been cobbled together at 5am on the morning of the judging day. Of course during the live DEMO we ended up standing in front of a word cloud full of expletives...). Oh the stories I could tell from hackathons I've been at... This element would be completely lost if it was purely online.haha cool and quite the surprise to have the word cloud of expletives haha.

Solve : Laptop freezes/stutters/drops frames for a split second constantly?

Answer»

My Laptop is experiencing split second stutters, or freezes very often. It's usually every 45 seconds - 3 minutes, but it will act as if it skips, or drops frames, or freezes but only for half a second.
I am running windows 10, intel i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz, 16 Gigs of ram, Nvidia GTX 960M, with 120GB SSD and two 500GB HDD.
I have no idea what has caused this problem, and i have done everything under the sun to try and fix it, and i'm at a complete loss.
I installed 17 drivers, and then shortly after this problem started, so i went back to my restore point before the driver install, and it was still doing it. Which i thought was weird because isnt that the WHOLE point of system restore? anyways, i downloaded all the drivers, one at a time to see which one made the problem go away, or worse, and each driver update did nothing, as my laptop was already stuttering since the updates, and then system restore. I uninstalled everything i have installed in the last week, i ran a RAM test thing, i defragged everything, i made sure it wasnt the Nvidia card, it's not my mouse, i'm not using AMD so it has nothing to do with that, xbox app is deleted, i ran a virus scan for every file on my laptop and it came up clean, including a root scan, also came up clean, opening task manager and LOOKING at the usage, my cpu usage is at 3% 3.48GHZ, memory is at 23% disks are at 0, and when the laptop stutters i see no spike in anything, memory or usage it stays exactly the same.
I rolled my laptop back to the furthest back restore point i had and it seemed to be working fine, the stuttering stopped, and everything was good... for about a half hour. Once i saw that the stutter left, i made a restore point of my laptop prior to the stutter, after it made the restore point, it started stuttering again.
I've been watching my performance while typing this, and there isn't really a pattern, but i have noticed this, when my laptop stutters, the wi-fi performance bar SPIKES. I have no idea what it means, or what i can do about it, but i'm so far LOST and out of this world, i don't know what to do. It seems like a hardware issue, but i have literally never had a problem before, and when i rolled back i don't know why it stopped stuttering for half an hour. If anyone can help, i would be so happy you have no idea....
So when my laptop drops a frame/stutters/freezes for a split second, my audio is not affected whatsoever, and i have once again noticed the stutters either make my CPU usage spike, or my wi-fi in no particular pattern, sometimes the cpu spikes, sometimes the wifi, sometimes neither. I'm lost.....
