I lost my Windows ME "Help & Support Center". If I open this, a window appears with title "Help & Support" with this message " The page cannot be display". I tried all the way that i know but can't repair. If you have any IDEAS,  pls help me. It's very annoying for me.

i own a sony vaio laptop.  when i turn it on, 3/4 of the time, i HEAR this terrible crackling noise. the noise is constant. the other 1/4 of the time, the sounds goes on just fine and works great the whole time the computer is on. i have updated all of the drivers and tried the SOUND with headphones – no LUCK with EITHER. i am working on xp. because the sound works some of the time, i don't think it's my speakers or my sound card. it just seems like the sound either "CATCHES" or not. any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance!oh, i tried to update my soundcard - soundmax integrated digital audio, but it says i need to insert a cd and my computer didn't come with one. and i could not find the update on the soundmax website. i am not sure if this is the problem though that causes the terrible noises.http://www.cappuccinopc.com/drivers.asp  its also possible that the wave startup sound file is damage try to use another one to disprove this.ok

You will be amazed at how many things those apps will find. You may ALSO find that the redialler ( redirector) is gone as well.

With all the bugs and viruses that are uot there today it is almost necessary to run these TYPES of UTILITIES regularly .....to keep your system running smoothly.

Sorry...it was too confusing trying to post a reply in a thread with two different subjects  

Anyway, Chobson, a "second hand" computer could have ** anything ** on it. The FIRST thing I would suggest is a good system cleaning.

Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup and click on it. It will display several items (Temp Files, Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, etc.).  You should check Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin at least. If you haven't added anything new in the last week, you should also check Temporary Files. Then, let it clean out those files (delete them). Then, run Defrag (right under Disk Cleanup). Choose maindrive disk c: It MAY take awhile, but let it go until it's done. Then reboot and see what you've got.

There is more you can do, but first see it this clears up any of it.

Also, you should keep all posts about this topic in this thread (don't start a new topic for further posts about this).

arg problem after problem ok heres what happened i have a 40 gigabyte hard drive not more than a few weeks ago i still had about 28-30 gigs left now i recently looked at it and it said 645 megabytes ive heard of something that does that if anyone knows anything plz help ive havent had my comp for more than a year and its already getting tons of problemsI can't offer specific answers for your specific problem. However, I would LIKE to say that I have friends who shrug their shoulders when I say I'm trying to learn about internet security. Whether this is affecting you, I can't say just yet, without other info (like a hijackthis log). For now, I can give some suggestions that might help you to ** start  ** clearing this stuff up.

First, I would suggest a good cleaning. You didn't say what your Operating System is (Win 98Se, XP, or whatever). I use 98SE, but a lot of this will apply to others, too.

Go to Start > PROGRAMS > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup. Make sure that Temp, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are checked, and let it delete those files. Then, right under Disk Cleanup, click on Disk Defragmenter, and let it run....all the way until it finishes (could be an hour or more, depending on how long since you did this). When all that is done, reboot.

I doubt this will solve your problem, but it is a first step (gets rid of some of the "junk" and gets files back where they belong).

Next, go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware and download AdAware. Once you have it installed, double-click the AdAware icon and, when you have the opening screen, click Check For Updates (let your system go online). When you are sure you have all the updates, close everything (including this browser window) and open AdAware again. Click Start, then...in the next window...tick Use Custom Scanning Options, then click Customize. Once in that window, do the following:

Make sure the following SETTINGS are MADE and on -------"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then......

click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options on: "Scan within
archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE
Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then.........

go to settings(the gear on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and tick "Unload
recognized processes during scanning" ...........then........"Cleaning engine" and "Let
windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then...... click "proceed" to save your settings.

Now to scan it´s just to click the "Scan" button.

When scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. .(Right-click the
window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press next and then say
yes to the prompt, do you want to remove all these entries. Keep in mind that the first time you run it, there may be a LOT of entries (I just did this for a FRIEND and his first scan showed 191 entries....don't worry about how many there are....just mark "select all" as described above and get rid of them....)

When you have done all of this, restart your system and see if it is any better. There is more you can do, but this should at least get you started.

I would suggest Spybot next, but their site has been overwhelmed and may not be available right now, so I'd say to just do this much and post back the results (stay in this thread...don't start a new topic). Next will probably be a HijackThis log, but run AdAware first and see what happens.

Upon starting my computer I get many WINDOWS saying I have missing SHORTCUTS. The files I do not reconize (i.e. morze2.exe) and another window opens asking if I want to replace it with the nearest match based on size, date and type. Even after replacing all the files (last check 165 and counting) the windows still open and even more appear after each restart. Also when the windows are open I can not use my explorer bar and can only open programs via desktop shortcuts. I'm not sure how to correct the PROBLEM and would appreciate your input.

Hi I am running Windows Xp Pro Sp1 and very recently started getting beeps from deep inside the computer.  It seemes it all started when I INSTALLED this program called WebZip 6 .  It would beep then a few seconds later Windows would FREEZE, not even the mouse cursor or anything would work.

the program that seem to excite this the most is Winzip8 every time I press "extract" the beeping starts and the com hangs. It also occurs other times but at a random BASIS, even when the computer is idle.

I have scanned many times but there is no virus.
I installed Windows XP pro again on another drive and as soon as I used Winzip the beeps came back!!

when i installed my windows xp, i didn't delete my previous windows, windows 2000. and i have no clue how to unistall windows 2000. i'm a total NOOB and i don't know how to format partitions and STUFF, so if someone could help me , that would be greatWin2k and WinXP are SIMILAR. I did a format c:*.* on my laptop (panasonic cf-62) and now I cant get the os to finish install.I am trying to install WIN98 se I have GOTTEN it to open in safe mode but it wont load any DEVICES or hardware.I am not sure if the BIOS installed or if my autoeexec.bat is right.if I run sysedit  and clik on config tab there is only one line windows setver.exe the auto exec.bat tab is blank.

when trying to run sysedit I get this error message..system configuration error
c:\autoexec.bat cannot open this file..file is autoexec.bat
I am also getting this message  Drive A -C-and D are usingms-dos compatibility mode file system...

I RECENTLY upgraded an OLDER computer but did not upgrade the VIDEO adapter. NOw all of sudden my screen only gets black & white. All the windows software settings are at 16 COLORS but monitor only shows b&w. I have the SIM's software including 3 expansion packs (Living Large, House PARTY, Hot Date) When I load the program completely, it goes through all the cheesy intro stuff, then loads into the neighborhoods' screen.
No matter what I do, whether I choose to create a family or click on a house to play with, within a few moments, like 10-15 seconds the screen goes black and then it goes back to windows, like I had NEVER loaded the game.
It does not give me an error MESSAGE or any type of warning, just closes the program. I've tried restarting my computer, and having no other programs running. I don't have a clue what to do.
This is a brand new computer; I have windows XP, 1 GB of Ram, 2.39 GHz, and a Pentium 4 CPU 2.40 GHz.
This should matter but.. try changing the Mode of the game.  XP can emulate different OSs but I don't think that's the issue since sims is a fairly recent game.  A better bet is to try reinstalling the game.  It shouldn't overwrite the saved games.

I tried sims once.. I quickly realized running my own life was TOUGH enough.i've tried re-installing it about 3 times... and still the same thing happens  :-/

my PC runs on Windows98 SE and when i try to restart in ms-dos mode, it will not go to dos mode and the monitor just STAYS blank the i've notice that the light on the floppy drive stay on. is there any conflict SOMEWHERE? have you played with the floppy drive? the floppy drive light stays on because the ribbon CABLE is attached wrong(upside down) or the floppy itself is faulty..disconnect the floppy if able to do so? caution is needed? and see if you can obtain dos mode.

At each bootup, I get a error window that states the "APWUTIL.DLL" is missing.  

I am using NORTON AV 2002 on my PC and it seems to be RUNNING properly with AUTOMATIC updates and continuous scanning of files and incoming Email.  This is a DLL file found in the Norton directory.  It is, in fact, in the directory but it is "missing" in accordance with some program that is looking for it?

How can I remove or fix this annoying error MSG from coming up at each bootup?

I recently had a DSL line hooked up and now for whatever reason I have random lockups with my computer.  1 odd catch though is if I go into task view and "end task" on "Explorer" the lock up goes away and I can continue.  Any ideas anyone?Additionally I don't EVEN KNOW what "Explorer" is in the task view.  When I have Internet Explorer open it is listed separately.  And right now when I open task view "Explorer" isn't even running.  I'm somewhat at a loss.  I have run anti-virus, ad-aware, spybot and hopefully I'm clean.  Thanks for your help ahead of time.I ran a registry CLEANER that found about 75 things askew.  Who knows how long those things had been bogging me down.  Computer runs just fine now and actually a bit faster then b4 all this started.Premature celebration.  No fix as of yet, got the lock up again this morning and continued since
OK...since I seem to be talking to myself or I have everyone who reads this stumped (which I was) I have found a solution that seems to have the problem solved.  I set up Zone Alarm firewall program.  One of the settings allows you to approve each program individually when it tries to reach out to the internet.  Well explorer.exe was trying to reach out to the internet.  I told it that it wasn't allowed and since then, for TWO days or so, its worked fine.  This makes sense with the steps I was taking to shutdown explorer to unlock my comp.  Somehow explorer was getting bogged down for some reason when trying to contact the internet.  Who knows.  Good LUCK with your problem whatever it is.

can u check ur memory resources when u start ur PC, before the problem and after the problem.

there are some resources monitoring program in Accessories -> system tools, or may can try system properties and see if memory is ok.

: )ALSO do a check for viruses. If this doesnt turn anything up, reinstall windows and iff you are STILL experiencing the probel is may be somthing hardware related such as memory as sky mentioned.

I am having problems working out how i can record onto my minidisc through the optical output on the SOUND card's HUB. If anybody has an Audigy 2 zs and can OFFER any advise, please do.I do not own a minidisk player/recorder but i WOULD assume that you would simply plug the player into the optical out on the front pannel then START the music playing and press record on the minidisk player.

My OS ( win98 ) seems to have been corrupted. I can't access safe mode but with some help have been able to access something called BIOS and altered the boot sequence to start from my win98 cd in order to re install it, BUT I can't be sure if it will overwrite my files.

Can someone advise if I can re install win98  to  a new directory ( say eg newwin/ )   and then happily recover my files.

Does this make sense.?

MRYou'll have 2 options when reinstalling.  One.. FORMAT the C: drive (you'll lose all your data).  Two.. reinstall W98 over the previous copy and hope you don't lose all your data.If you decide to overwrite you existing windows you shouldnt use the same username or it will overwrite your files, if you use a different one there will still be a folder in your 'users' folder (in XP not sure about 98) that has your my documents ect in.
Once you have reintalled windows NONE of your programs will be on the start menu so you need to reinstall them all.
The best way to do it is to overwrite you windows then backup  the files you want to KEEP and then format the harddrive and install windows clean, as this can help avoid PROBLEMS CAUSED my directly overwriteing windows.

Is there a way to display more than 80 columns in a MS-DOS SHELL under WinXP or WINME?  
I have an old DOS program written in Foxpro, that RUN perfectly in an old machine with Win98SE using a S3 Trio64 video CARD.  But when I migrated to ME or XP with GeForce video card, it will not display more than 80 columns.  The new video card does not support DOS mode command.

Any thoughts ??

When any .exe application is opened, I RECIEVE a message from PAINT saying "Paint cannot read this file"
"this is not a valid bitmap file, or its format is not currently supported."
No other users on the computer are effected.

Outlook 2000 (win98se) sends mail no worries, but page faults occur upon RECEIVING new message. Help please.Jimbo89......what error message is dislayed when you try to SEND. It's possible your server is the culperate.
Do you have Outlook express on your machine as well or do you have a HOTMAIL account . If so try and send yourself a test email and SEE .

the message is :  An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway, click Ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click Close. You will lose nay information you entered since your last Save. When Ignore is clicked the next message is: An illegal operation has occurred and the program will be SHUT down [General protection fault in module ].  Outlook does not actually shutdown but is not visible in the Close Programs Dialog Box. Dr Watson says it is still running but it cannot be opened or restarted. It does not effect any other internet operations and occurs when new mail is received. Outlook sends mail OK.

ThanksFurther to my last post, when I close the program, it doesn't close. Dr Watson's snapshot says it is still running but pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't show it running. It is still on my task bar but I can't access it. AAAARRRRGGGGHHH.

Have you considered UNINSTALLING WMP through Control Panel > Add/Remove, then going to Windows update and installing the newest version?

You might want to wait for more replies before actually doing this, since I'm not all that sure I'm on the right track here  

Best....sierradadCan't shake a stick at that kind of quality advice.  Another thing to ask is.. what version of WMP is it?  I'd also post this in the software section as it SEEMS to have little to do with VIRUSES or spyware.

my motherboard is shot.  i've been told that Windows XP would recognize the new motherboard as a totally different computer and would not allow the OS to operate at all and it was HOPELESS.  Is this true? or can i install a new MB and get it running?  This is partially true, when installing a new Motherboard Windows XP will think of this new component as a new computer. However, when this is done you only need to re-register Microsoft Windows XP.when you try to re-register it will tell you that you can't because it has been registered too many times, just call the number and give the CODE they ASK for (when you try to register again it will put up a screen with CODES on it) and when they ask if this is a first install tell no and why your re-installing and they will step you through the rest.

Video CD uses an MPEG format, and there are various mpeg format like mpeg1, mpeg2 ETC. I think Video CD uses mpeg2 format.

I used to convert video files using Adobe Premier and EzyCleaner (bundled with Premier) to convert video files. But Premier is an xpensive software.

Used program to get real-mode DOS BACK into WIN ME(http:/www.dewassoc.com/support/minme/real_dos.htm). Get a DOS prompt at boot then goes into WIN ME. Question is ,how to alter my now new autoexec.bat and config.sys files to get a boot option at start-up?F8 option only displays Normal 1. When starting up my PC, it gets to 'starting Win 98', but then reboots back to start the boot cycle again. This keeps happening and the computer gets stuck in this loop.
I have also noticed that the Floppy drive is not being searched for and I have had to change that in BIOS menu.

Is this software or hardware!

Microsoft has published an add-on to solve this problem. As I do not use Windows 98 any more I am afraid I do not have the ADDRESS by hand, but I presume a SEARCH on Microsoft's site should give some results.

I had the information on microsoft.public.fr.windows98 about two years ago, I imagine the question must have been asked also in an English speaking newsgroup on news.microsoft.com.

It can happen once that if you have something really ill-installed this happens again, but generally speaking this add-on brings a real improvement.

I WOULD suggest that you get all the latest patches and updates from M/S and then make sure your Anti Virus is up to date and deep scan your system again.

dl65   i dont think its a virus im pretty sure its like spyware atleast thats what ive seen wondering googlecomputernewbie......if you think its another bug ......D/l Ad-Aware , SpyBot .....They are both good at finding bugs . ...I run both of them all the time and they do a good job of keeping the system clean.

No real definite answer, but in Windows XP, you can protect a directory by a password only if your drive is formatted in NTFS format, not if it is formatted in FAT32.

I had to uninstall aol and re-install it on my computer because it wasn't letting me log on. I contacted AOL Tech support and they instructed me on what to do and it reloaded successfully but I am still having trouble logging on to the internet. The tech told me that I have too many PROGRAMS that are APPEARING on the screen when I HIT ctrl/alt/delete and he said to contact a computer service to find out how to get those programs from appearing in that screen. He said that they are programs that automatically come on when I start up my computer and they are overloading my computer and not allowing me to log on to AOL. I know how to "End Task" them and it works temporarily but I don't know how to make them go away until I want to use them (if that makes any sense). Can you give me any advice on what I need to do? In the window that opens click the StartUp tab.
From there you can uncheck any programs you don't want to run when you boot the computer.

i recently bought call of duty. When directX tries to download off CD it fails so i have to do it manually. when i do it manually everything works until it says i have to restart my computer. please HELP me OUTDOES it give you a name for the virus?  What anti-virus software are you using?  If you get the name you can probably go to http://www.symantec.com and search for a fix there if your anti-virus can't fix it.  FOLLOW the directions such as when they say to turn off SYSTEM Restore before running the cleanser, OTHERWISE you may end up restoring the virus on the next reboot.

I have built a new computer, AsrockK7s8x, AMD 2500, 256 ram, 120gb HD , Nvidia Geforce4 MX 440 SE VIDEO Card. Install XP. However,the system has given me loads of stress, and now, on occasions, will not boot.
Power comes on hd starts, then nothing. Blank screen,no bleeps and computer willnot switch off.

I thought it may be the graphics card so I bought a new one, seemed Ok for a while everything checked OK in device manager,all worked really sweet. Switched off, came BACK to it and nothing!!

bought bare bones system, had mother board and CPU installed, i installed 40 gig hd a floppy and new video card. loaded win xp pro. everything seem to work fine, no errors. but when i shut it down thair is still power to the system. at a lower volt. maybe a wire in the worng place, im new to pc building, and can't find help at the MOBO site, it is a Tyan S1854 with a 1 gig. You say it still has power on after you shut down........does the system appear to shut down properly?

dl65     thanks for the reply, don't know how old the mobo is  but it is a Tyan Trinity 400, with VIA  Apollo pro 133 VT82C694x+VT82CS96B , the processor is a intel pentium IIIE
1000 mhz coppermine. no i don't see the number, by the power supply connector. and yes it seem to  shut down   properly,  but the power is still thair but lower like a leak or a bypass some whereBigheart.....I neglected to ask .....how did you notice that the power wasnt turned off if it is shutting down properly?
I would remove all the cards except the dislay adapter and see if it powers down ok . If no then unplug the power to the cd/roms....then with the cds unplugged unplug the power from the hard drive ( that should only LEAVE the power connection to the motherboard. If you still has a leak then you know its there. Can you find out if the system was doing this before you bought it?

dl65it goes through all the steps to shuting down, then moitor goes off , but FANS and hard drive are still running on low power. no i have no way to find out. it had a 10 gig hd when i got it and the video card did not work, had no floppy. or modem  o and it did have cd-rom drive.  i will try as you suggested and  post back  Thanks.
