Solve : notebook audio problems?

Answer»

I have a Clevo notebook D22ES and the sound is not working, where can I find out what the proper audio setting should be AND how do I know if I need a new soundcard? I WENT to a computer store and they told me I would have to buy and EXTERNAL sound card for a notebook, is this true or is there any way of fixing/replacing the one I have?
Thank you for any info you can give.... this SUCKS!!First CHECK if the correct drivers are installed for your sound card.have you tried the narrator option in winxp..and for a sound test type dxdiag in the run BOX..Your computer has sound.  There is no sound card; it's a notebook computer.

This is your computer:
http://www.clevo.com.tw/products/D22ES.aspOn the internet, go to your computer manufacturer's website. Usually they supply a good amount of current drivers for you to grab.

Solve : sound card issue with msn messenger...help...?

Answer»

Hi there, I have recently installed a new yamaha sound card on my compaqENS/C600. The sound card is functioning well in all other areas after I disabled the on board sound card, until I tried to have a conversation on msn. I got this message that I don't have a sound card I tried to run the WIZARD in TOOLS but got the same message....PLEASE help... thanx. Cheers(Re)install proper drivers.OK. What you want to do is make sure that everything is plugged in properly, and then download the proper drivers for it. Another thing is that maybe your computer is not compatible with the sound card that you put into it. You might have to be more careful with looking at the BOX before you buy..... Also, maybe there is a connection problem. Sometimes, if the drivers don't go into the computer before the sound card, then the computer will refuse to detect the card..... If all fails call the people that MADE the card, and have them tell you what to do next...

Solve : No sound, but the speakers seem to be trying?

Answer»

I was using my computer in the morning and had sound as usual...after school, I came back to my computer and now I have no sound (that includes for games, CDs, or anything downloaded from the net).  What does some through the speakers are the sounds of my computer's hard drive running.  It's very faint.  I've gone through the troubleshooter and still have the problem.  I've tested the speakers elsewhere and know they're working.  Any ideas?  Do I just need to UPDATE the drivers or should I get a new soundcard?Have you made changes to your drivers?

Are all the cables still connected?type dxdiag in the run box...what does it report..is the volume controls SET properly..as the sound been turned down..check..This could be any of several THINGS:

Sound card went south. Check the Sndvol32.EXE (volume control) app - right click the speaker icon in the tray and choose Mixer, or use from Run - and make sure nothing like WAVE, WaveSynth, or Master Volume Mute is on. Try putting an audio CD in the CD drive and see if it will play through the analog CD input on your mixer. If the settings look OK, it may be your sound card DAC output or line amplifier is dead. If re-installing the sound card drivers and/or adjusting the settings don't fix it, replace the sound card.

Bad cables or sound card output jack/configuration. Make sure that your sound card is configured for the right speaker configuration. If you have only one pair of speakers, you should not be set for 4 or more. Jiggle the cord in the line-out jack and see if the speakers come on intermittently; if they do, replace the jack or sound card. Verify that the cables between your speaker set and your sound card aren't broken or shorted.

Bad AC feed to the speakers. You test the speakers elsewhere, but maybe the AC plug you use for them at your PC is bad. Try another power strip connection.

Intermittent connection in the speakers. I had to fix one set of speakers where the connector between the right speaker (with the controls on it) and the subwoof cabinet had begun coming loose. I had to get the sub board out, get most of the solder off, clinch the leads properly and resolder tham, and reassemble the whole thing. Then it worked fine.Ok. You're in luck! I just had that problem 1 week ago! I'm not kidding! If your computer says that the sound is working properly, but no sound is coming out, then it is PROBABLY a driver problem. It depends on what kind of sound card you have as well. Who makes your sound card? (Creative, etc.). Also, make sure that they are connected properly, and that in the device manager, your computer is detecting your speakers.

Solve : FreeWebs HTML adding .mp3 for background?

Answer»

Hi, I am new to html and I am making a website on freewebs. I chose beginner mode and tried to add background sound to it. It says that I can only use MIDI files UNLESS I sign up for its premium services. I am not allowed to pay for my site so I SWITCHED to html(advanced) mode and tried to create the background sound. I UPLOADED my mp3 files and tried to use Microsoft FrontPage and use the html coding from there and copy onto the site. I changed the link to my FILE on the site, but when I open the site, no music plays. Please help.  First, there are reasons they do not want you uploading mp3's. For a start, mp3's are generally pretty large files, which means a high bandwith which Freewebs have to pay for. Also, the term mp3 generally conjures up memories of Napster, Kazaa, Morpheus and other P2P apps. Seeing as there is no easy way to see if you own the rights to the mp3 (and therefore can do what you like with it), I'm not surprised there is a blanket ban on the files.

Secondly, what you want to do is break the terms and conditions to which you signed up to the Freeweb's service. Even if you did manage it (unlikely), they'll find out sooner or later and simply remove the site, no questions asked and no warning given.

And thirdly, background music is generally an incredibly tacky effect on a webpage and more-often-than-not a complete and utter waste of bandwith. I applaud Freewebs for TRYING to stamp out the practice. God Bless Freewebs!

What I'm saying is simple: upgrade.

Solve : Conflict I/O port : 378?

Answer»

i have no idea what it is and when i start my computer
it says hit F1 to continue it used to never do that

could some plz help meHave recently added new hardware (possibly a sound card)?
Have you changed any I/O addresses or IRQ's in device manager?
The conflict involves LPT1 (parallel printer port) which should be using IRQ 7 and its address space should normally be 378 - 37Fh. Another device is either grabbing the IRQ or is overlapping the address space, thus causing the conflict. The most common cause is a sound card.i installed a eathernet card

i not sure if i spelled that rightWhat is the make of your pc?gateway 2000go to the device manager  and  scroll down the list till you get to network adapters click the plus sign and you shold see your ethernet card...click ...poperties and then click remove....DONT panic...when windows reboots it will sort it out..If the remove and re-install of the network card doesn't resolve it, try this:

In Device Manager (System applet in CONTROL Panel), remove the LPT1 printer port from 'Ports- Com and LPT' category.

When you restart, hold the DEL key (unless some other is known to go to BIOS, could be ESC, F1, F2, F10, or Control) and ENTER the BIOS setup. Change the address for LPT1 in the BIOS (Advanced settings or System hardware or some similar category) to 278-27f hex.

Save the change and restart.

NOTE: If you use USB for your printer and do not use the COM and LPT ports (old-style serial and parallel ports0 on the back of the case, you can disable those you don't use to free up the adsdresses and IRQs.

Solve : Speaker Spike?

Answer»

When I play music from any source the speakers EMIT a loud noise, just   for a second, approx six times  during the SONG. I do not know what to call this noise. I guess a noise spike is as good a description as any.

This only started when I had a new hard drive and mother board installed with extra ram.
Help would be appreciated. And info on what software/ hardware used and what o/s is  having this problem ....damage wav/mp3 file..was bios upgrade install or firmware...Thank you. The following is what I have.

Windows XP home edition
An ASUS Motherboard plus an AMD 2500+ processor
512 mb sddr ram
Bios upgrade

The problem occures if I play music or games from the web and if I play wav or mp3 files or any CD music.Have you installed proper drivers? Did you turn off your system before connecting the speakers?Good day.

Yes the computer was taken to the shop for proper installation and then when I came home I connected everthng and then TURNED it on.

I have even tried unplugging speakers left/right and the printer and scanner. I was told that the computer was DUMPING and this was causing the noise via rthe speakers. If true how could one solve this/

Could it be the BIOS?

The specifications show audio as ADI Soundmax 6-channel audio CODEC S/PDIF out interface.

Thank you for this. Quote

Solve : how to change font?

Answer»

i installed a new font and i want to change the font on my desktop but when i try to change the fonts the font i want DOESNT show up, how do i change the font?plagued4life......What operating system are you using and where did you install the fonts ?

let us know

dl65 i have windows 98 and i saved it and added it to my font listWhy would you want to change your desktop fonts?idk, i think it would look better than the font the desktop hasDon't you think that if it would, Microsoft would have decided to use those fonts? They're quite KEEN on looks.its not a regular font, its a slipknot font and i wanted to put it as my desktop font to fit the theme on my computerWhy would anyone want a Slipknot theme? That must be the most horrible band in history. Well apart from all the other bands in the same genre.

ok did i ask for your opinion on slipknot, i asked how i change my desktop font, but apparently its not getting answered so nevermindI thought everyone wanted to know my opinion.plagued4life, I get that problem pretty often (hey, I'm a font addict: at one point I had 1042 installed!) The solution is very simple - just go to "View > Refresh" in your fonts folder. This normally WORKS for me.

Raptor, are you really sure you'd entrust this man on matters of style and looks?

I quite often change the fonts on my desktop/start menu etc in order to get a desired theme going. I think you'll find Serif fonts can work pretty well sometimes...He looks an awful lot like the person I see in the mirror.. Hmm..

Solve : downloaded screensavers?

Answer»

I downloaded some screensavers and some went AUTOMATICALLY to where screensavers go in windows where you can change screensavers at any time and some did not. How do I put them there? Place them in the C:\Windows folder.Scan for bugs first, SCR files were a popular way of distributing virii.

Modern monitors are not particularly subject to 'image burn', and don't actually benefit from 'screen savers' like those early screens with their eventual shadow of a game or text menu. The only real reason I can see for USING a screen saver nowadays is to SUPPORT [email protected] or [email protected], leave a 'gone to lunch' type message, or secure WORK from snoopy co-workers with a password. And of course personal preference...What is [email protected] and have you got a link?

Solve : ip address help please?

Answer» HEY everyone
I am new here, and I have a few questions about subnetworks and such, if you could help me, it would be greatly APPRECIATED!

With an IP address of 129.5.5.7 say I want to create subnetworks with 1000 hosts per NETWORK using the above IP address.
how many bits need borrowing?

For the first 3 subnets
what is the subnet number?
what is the subnet mask?
what is the broadcast address?
what is the first usable host IP in the range?
and what is the last usable host IP in the range?

if any of you could help me out, it would be great
thanks again!
You'll need a good industrial router and associated switches/hubs for each subnet.

Assume a 1000 (approximate) member LAN, you will need to assign four groups of 250-plus nodes
192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.254
192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.254
192.168.2.1 through 192.168.2.255
192.168.3.1 through 192.168.3.255

The excluded addresses in each range are for router gateway and ID/control service. Set the DHCP control on with the above RANGES ACTIVE or use specific DNS/IP assignments for each machine.

Then you set the WAN end of the router for whatever address (129.5.5.7) you wish your LAN to present to the world.

Solve : two computer hook-up?

Answer»

I just bought a new computer (P4 3.0 mhz, 512 ram, XP, 160g hd). I am keeping my old one (P3 500mhz, 256 ram, XP, 40g hd), and would like to hook them up together. What are my options and what do I need to do? Some of my questions are:

What's better crossover or kvm cables?
Do I keep XP on both machines?
Can I transfer my programs to the new machine? Some were downloaded and I don't have the disks.
What's the procedure, what else do I need to know?

Oh, I should have mentioned that I have one monitor and keyboard.

Thanks  crossover cables FINE...you could even network them using one of them as  server and transfer files/or the file transfer wizard..i would use one of them for old games mp3 etc and uninstall winxp and revert back to your old o/s if its installed..for games and alike..and you if you using one as a server uyou will only use on monitor and keyboard...there are options to use monitor and keyboard using dual VIEW... Quote

2) Can I transfer my programs to the new machine?

3) Some were downloaded and I don't have the disks.
What's the procedure, what else do I need to know?

4) ...I have one monitor and keyboard.

1) Temporarily install 40GB HD and 160GB into new P4.

2) Use hard drive manufacturers SOFTWARE that came with your new hard drive to "Image Copy" 40GB drive to 160GB drive.

3)  See 2).

4)  Get a 2nd keyboard (about $5) and monitor.
KVM switches are cool, if you don't mind switching between. Use a 'software' switch, not a rotary hard switch. If you have room, separate keyboard, video, and mouse are easier to keep track of.

You can either equip one machine as a server (with two network cards or a card and a modem (ugh! Shared dialup...)), use a crossover Ethernet cable between the two, and Internet Connection Sharing, or you can (more easily and safely) connect both machines to a router, then to your broadband.

You will need a separate OS license for each machine. It can be the same version or different ONES...

Solve : Re: Disk compression?

Answer»

hi Christine....

...  have you tried RIGHTCLICK C:\ and use "Check for Errors" then to a defrag, then try compressing.... might work for you that way.. Try doing so in safe mode.Press F8 on bootup and run Scandisk, defrag and compress files from there.I have no experience with using the compress OPTION in Windows 98. I do know there are different methods of compression, have you tried each of them?Is this the compressed-volume option (DriveSpace 3.5) in Win98SE? It had the potential to improve efficiency of FAT16 hard drive STORAGE, but didn't HELP much in FAT32.

Don't use it in the boot partition. Compressing a data partition is marginally beneficial, but using it on the Windows folder is universally fatal...

Solve : 5.25 floppy file retrieval?

Answer» ANYONE out there know of company that could retrieve files from old 5.25 floppys??
Got some files I'd like to COPY to newer format...
Or can I PLUG a 5.25 in a win98 pc and retrieve them?
thanks, gabrielIf you have a drive, mount it as drive B on your existing system. Normally you do this by connecting it to the middle CONNECTOR of a floppy cable and to power, and IDENTIFYING it manually in BIOS (13cm 1200K byte floppy). Then you read it like any other floppy. Win9x, DOS, and WinXP all use FAT filesystem for floppies.

Solve : Connecting VHS to computer?

Answer»

Looking for a VHS Player that can be connected to a computer through USB or other means. Are you wanting to copy from vhs to the computer or the other WAY around.  If from computer to vhs, there are lots of hardware solutions which range from using RCA cables to an S-Video connection.  I use www.tigerdirect.ca for purchases like that.by far my favorite is belkins  video_bus...some nice setup/easy  stuff..no ads here.............user friendly....to boot...  [email protected]k for it...BRILL....              ( recommended by yours truly)Video out to VHS is done with an adaptor from SVGA to NTSC video. Many laptops have this BUILT in, others have the adaptor to connect to the 15-pin back video connector. Feed through adaptors are best for a desktop.

If you want to record a VHS video to hard drive, a frame grabber or other streaming video card is best. Pinnacle makes SEPARATE frame grabber cards, and some ATI video cards include it in the video card. Some TV receiver cards can also function as NTSC video receiver cards...

No ARGUMENT...but let's now confuse power surge with ESD (electrostatic discharge).  They are not the same and a surge protector will not protect from ESD.

Upon start you can enter the BIOS by pressing the key your computer tells you to.

To learn more about the BIOS, go here

If your Windows XP CD does not boot you will have to set your CD-ROM player to the first boot device. Which can be DONE in the BIOS.

Unless your CD player is not supported, you will require Bootdisks. But first try to boot by setting the first boot device to the CD-ROM player. If that does not work, you can create bootdisks. (Your CD-ROM player may not be supported) These can be obtained from http://www.bootdisk.de

I just bought a new computer and my mouse is clicking on EVERYTHING.  This is especially evident in the START menu on the desktop.  And as I TYPE, the mouse     DECIDES to start inserting my typing into the middle of my text.  Or, it clicks on other things on the page so my text stops.  I have a feeling this is coming from the touch pad on my laptop.  I've heard of how you can get viruses this way when you skim over an advertisement and your mouse clicks and subsequently downloads it.
Any way I can gt rid of this annoyance?
Using Win XP.
Check that you haven't got it SET to jump to the insertion point.

Click Control PANEL, Mouse, Pointer Options and uncheck the box half way down that say jump automatically to the dialogue box or something like that.Checked, it wasn'in the first place.  is this on the net...remote access..more info>http://support.microsoft.com/kb/96016/en-us

Solve : firewall *censored*?

Answer»

I have Morpheus but my downloads are seriously hampered by a firewall on my emule connnection.
I did all the instructions on opening all necessary ports on my belkin wireless router {n.b.: I was directly connected to the router at the time}.  Everything turned out all right.  Then I moved my computer to wireless.
(side question: before the connection speed said 100 mbps, now it says 11 but says the signal strength is very good, i don't get this.  it hasn't seem to have changed when i browse the internet, but maybe this has to do with my problem...) so i've got it connected on wireless, and my old computer is the one directly connected to the router.  (I can't tell how many mbps it is getting because i know nothing of win98. (mine is on xp))  well, i disable all the visible firewalls on my old one, and it still is firewalled on the xp.  i look at the configuration of the xp's wireless utility, and it lists the wireless sources as a lynksys which is very strong signal, and the belkin, which is very very slow and has a terrible signal.  I had a lynksys connected to this one once, but that was a while ago, i can't remember if i left the firewalls on, and it wasn't wireless(if it helps).  but anyway the lynksys connection does not allow me to access my new belkin router, while the belkin connection does but is far too slow.  i have all the firewalls I know of disabled on this computer.  please help me disable these unkown firewalls and get my wireless connection to (speedily) acknowledge the belkin, not the lynksys.

sorry if this was patchy, it's been a long two days of coffee and cigrettes.  Please help, even if i only use the morpheus for a couple more days, i hate leaving loose ends and strange errors...

the router is connected to a non-firewalled dsl. if i left something out just ask me i'll be closely monitoring this.  you guys have helped me out before.billiusthemook.....If you had posted your issue in the hardware section .....you may have received a faster response. How about describing your issue exactly ...with details about your operating system...,
the type of router your using and model numbers and the like. ( its handy so we can check on them ) are you networked , connected through a router...is it wireless or not. that sort of info .....leave out things like it used to work this way..... Have you actually checked your download speed ...or do you just think its not good ?
Go and refill your coffee ........forget about the smokes ( they're not good for you ) and get back to us .

DL65 sorry bout that, i'm new.

I am #1 trying to get my wireless network connection to properly connect.  and #2 trying to remove all firewalls in my system and on my router.

The computer i am on is using the windows xp os, and is connected to the internet through a wireless router. the router is a belkin wireless router model #F5D7230-4 version 1444.  The computer was previously connected directly to an ethernet linksys router.  Both routers have been connected to a dsl modem (if that's what you call it, i'm not sure).  The wireless desktop network card which connects to the wireless router is model #(i'm almost positive)F5D7000.

Now, when i open up the connection properties of the wireless desktop card, it lists two different available "networks".  One is titled linksys and the other is entitled belkin54g.  linksys has a very strong signal and has the gateway IP set to my old router; "192.168.1.1" and assigns me the address "192.168.1.101".  When i force a connection to the belkin54g the signal drops dramatically almost to a crawl, but unlike the linksys it will allow me to access my belkin router, whose address is "192.168.2.1" and assigns me the address "192.168.2.2" which is listed on the DHCP table after accessing the router.

My second problem is associated with Morpheus and may or may not be connected (i think it is) with the first problem.  Before going wireless, i had the computer directly connected to the router and had setup the router to my liking, and morpheus didn't have any problem with firewalls and it was clear sailing.  then i went wireless and it tells me i have my connections firewalled.  I have gone through all the connections i can find and have turned off all firewalls, and the router has not been changed since the move and does not have a firewall, and it still has the settings i had before, with the port forwarding and all.  I need to figure out how to find and disable this firewall which has eluded me so far.

I appreciate your help sincerely.

P.S. although i have not seen MUCH, if any, change in speed outside of the now firewalled morpheus, the connection speed says 11 Mbps when before when i was directly connected to the router is was 100 Mbps.  I figured this was SUBSTANTIAL enough a difference to show change, but so far i seen nothing.  (Morpheus is a different story, but is was slow back when i still had firewalls when i was directly connected and when i had 100 Mbps.) so any explanation would be great (though hardly necessary).billiusthemook....Ok if I have this correct....you have two routers , but you are only currently using the Belkin wireless router .  It sounds to me as if you have not removed the Linksys router software from your pc.....I would be inclined to completely remove all software for both the Belkin router and the Linksys router from your pc and laptop......Then I would reinstall the software for the Belkin router only. Does your ISP require that you register your routers MAC addresss ? I would do the same thing for the wireless network card .( Is it a PCI card ?) You may have to reset your ADSL modem as well .
Then when all has been purged and or reset ....I would reinstall the Belkin router.....exactly following the installation and setup instructions. Then reinstall any software or drivers for the wireless network card.
Now test your system to see if it functions as it should
To the best of my knowledge a router is a hardware firewall and you cannot turn it off . If you continue to have problems , I would contact Belkin and if necessary your ISP .

let us know how you make out.
dl65 ok, the software for the router itself is not on the computer, but the wireless network card {which is pci} software is, do want me to uninstall that? and if so, how should i do that in terms of steps in taking out the card, then software, etc.

I can't find any software on the computer for the old linksys router, so i'm assuming i've already uninstalled it.

my isp has never required my mac address, so i don't think that is the problem

sorry about the delayed response, i had to get some sleepbilliusthemook....If I understand your quote.....
"Now, when i open up the connection properties of the wireless desktop card, it lists two different available "networks".  One is titled linksys and the other is entitled belkin54g.  linksys has a very strong signal and has the gateway IP set to my old router; "192.168.1.1" and assigns me the address "192.168.1.101". "
This suggests to me that there is still some referance to your old router .......I dont think there should be any .
You say your Belkin router has no software ? It should have come with a cd which should be installed on your desktop pc.........It will have a step by step procedure for installing and setting up . this should also include setting up and configuring your network. Next you asked about removing the card ......I would shut down , remove the card from the pci slot , then reboot , check the device manager to be sure its gone, then if all referance to it is gone ........shutdown , plug the card back in and restart your pc . Now Windows will detect the new hardware , and install the necessary drivers.
Now....you should be able to set things up according to the instructions on the router installation cd ....
let us know how you make out .
dl65
i uninstalled the software for the wireless card, removed the card, reinstalled the software, inserted the card, and then i let windows finish the installation.

the desktop card tells me it has 2 connections, one entitled linksys (my old router, which is not connected to a power source let alone the internet, where it lists the old router's address as the gateway), and the other entitled belkin54g (my new and connected router which has listed it's proper address as gateway, and in addition gives the proper ip address for this computer as according to dhcp table, and it allows access to the router via internet explorer unlike the other connection.

The linksys connection has a strong signal and is relatively fast. The belkin54g connection has a very weak signal and is very slow.

{{{{{

in addition to this i have a firewalled connection for both connections, but once the belkin router is accessed it tells me it is forwarding the specified ports to my computer but morpheus is still registered as firewalled.  Before going wireless but while directly connected to the belkin is had morpheus WORKING full speed without firewalls with the same ports being forwarded.strange: while on the belkin54g connection where i have access to the real router, morpheus starts off telling me all connections are firewalled, but a couple minutes in the firewalls fall.  this never used to happen.
anyway it still is only 2 Mbps on the belkin54g connection while the (technically non-existent) linksys connection is at 11 Mbps. Why would you use spyware ridden P2P software?i only use morpheus because it provides a *censored* of a lot for only a few adware and spyware programs, all of which have had no visible affects on the performance of my computer.

i have used other p2p programs, and they all have had either too little content, or too much spyware.  Emule was the best content, with the most affect on the performance.  Morpheus has full access to the emule and edonkey network for minimal spyware.  I love it.I'd prefer no spyware over any spyware at all. But I do value my privacy.ghostsurfer beats them all...try ipconfig /all....or netstat or ping the server...in msdos or cmd prompt..

Solve : Nightmare iomdisk.sys driver problem?

Answer»

For several months this godawful driver called iomdisk.sys has been forcing my computer to reboot randomly.  I just can't take it anymore.  I have tried absolutely EVERYTHING.

Here is what I know about it.  It is a driver for my Iomega ZIP USB 100 MB external drive.  It also controls my CD-ROM drives (I have two; a CD burner and a DVD burner; neither are external).  When I got the zip drive, I installed Iomegaware.  I didn't have to, because Windows XP comes with drivers for the zip drive already.  I kept having problems with this iomdisk.sys driver.  I called Iomega's support center and the guy told me that it wasn't an Iomega driver; that it was a Windows driver.  I had uninstalled the Iomegaware prior to calling Iomega (and after uninstallation I kept having problems).  The Iomega guy told me that the Iomegaware replaces the original iomdisk.sys driver with one of their own.  UNINSTALLING Iomegaware should have removed it.  I don't know if it did.  I doubt it.  Anyway, he had me remove some old entries in the registry pertaining to Iomegaware, and told me that that should have fixed it.  It didn't.

I tried callling Microsoft, but I was on hold for an hour.

I have posted this on Microsoft's newsgroups.  I have done a search on the Internet - I have tried everything humanly possible besides just formatting my hard drive and reinstalling Windows.  I really don't want to have to do that.

There has to be someone on this Earth who knows.  I cannot be the only person driven to complete madness and misery because of this.  There simply has to be an answer.

The longer this problem exists, the worse my computer gets.  The cmd.exe loads EVERYTIME I boot up my computer, and something called IP Configuration Utility or something keeps asking for Internet access (I have Zone Alarm).  Everytime I open the Control Panel explorer.exe causes some horrible error and it shuts down, wiping out everything in my system tray.  I can't even listen to audio CDs anymore because the computer randomly reboots (might be sound card driver problems, which is totally different).

I tried disabling the driver by using the Recovery Console, but then I lost access to my CD-ROM drives as well.  I also tried going into msconfig to disable anything related to Iomega running when the comptuer boots up and still, the same problem.

I don't know what to do anymore.  It is making me very, very unhappy - and I am already depressed.  Please, please, someone help.  It would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, and one more thing.  I don't want any smart *censored* remarks posted in reply to this message.  I paid a lot of money for my computer and this is no joke.  I am not in the mood to put up with any smart assed, asinine one-liners.  So if you aren't willing to help, then just go harass someone else.  Thanks. Quote

That's FUNNY, when you want to register and find out your product key has been blocked they seem more than eager to pick up.

Since you are using Windows XP, you should try the repair function.

Set the CD-ROM as the first boot device in the BIOS, insert the CD-ROM and run the repair utility.MihoshiMarie.....You are using XP ......are you using SP2?
I would try the following if you haven't already done so.
I would completely uninstall both of your cd drives......physically unplug then and remove all drivers.
Then I would completely uninstall your external zip drive and all drivers for it.
Then I would reboot the pc and do a search for any of the installed drivers for the cd's and the zip drive . I would also search the registry as well. Then I would run some kind of registry cleaner..( I'm sure you must have one that you like).
Then I would shut down and plug back in one of your cd drives. DO NOT install any drivers......Let Windows detect the "new hardware installed" and it will install the required driver.......then test it ......play a music cd. If your having a problem with your sound card.....try and sort it out now before going any further. You didnt mention what kind of burning software your using.....If the cd drive works ok ...then shut down and plug the second one back in and reboot and again let windows "detect new hardware" ...then test that drive.
If it works ....I would suggest doing a test burn....on a
CD +or- R  . If that is ok then I would shut down again and plug the zip drive in and let windows detect it and install the generic windows driver for it.
If you are using SP2....the driver for your zip drive may not be compatible with sp2.....You didnt say but I assume your pc was working just fine before you added the zip drive.

let us know

dl65  First of all, I'd like to thank Raptor and dl65 for their replies.  I have read them through and I will definitely try them out.

I do have Windows XP Home Edition, with SP1.  I tried installing SP2, but the computer's condition worsened, so I had to reinstall Windows XP.

I will post another reply here once my mother comes home (the resident computer expert) so that she can help me try these suggestions out.

Thanks again.   http://www.iomega.com/software/appservices.html Quote

I had one of those!  It made me miserable, too.  Got rid of it.  Are your internal drives Iomega, too?  The last good product Iomega made was the Bernoulli Box, still have the box with no drives.

Does this problem occur when drive is connected or disconnected?

No, thankfully my internal drives are not by Iomega.  As for the zip drive, this problem occurrs whether the drive is connected or not, but it occurrs more frequently when the drive is connected.

When the drive is disconnected, the problem usually occurrs when I am trying to shut down or restart the computer.

I haven't gotten a chance to try those solutions as yet, cos my FAMILY have been unpacking boxes in the basement.  I am glad to know that I am not the only one with this problem.  I hope you got your problem resolved. Quote
...I hope you got your problem resolved...

Drive is gone for good.  Computer problems were never as severe as yours.  Iomegaware is almost as bad as Norton System Works.  Once installed, they can never be completely removed and will haunt you forever.

Follow dl65's advice, above, and you've got a good chance of getting back to normal. Quote

I have tried using the driver verifier and enabled special pool (as advised by the blue screen of death) to make the problem go away.  This was after reinstalling Windows XP for the second time.  So FAR I haven't seen the problem again.

However, now I plan to follow dl65's advice and uninstall both of the CD-ROM drives (I never use the ZIP drive anymore).  I will have to do this after I get back from an out-of-state trip, which will be two weeks from now.

I also plan to get an extra hard drive, in case I need to back up my files and format the hard drive.

I don't think I will be using my ZIP drive anymore after this.  I don't know if I will get the same problems by using it on a clean system.  I hope not.

If it's any help to anyone else, the stop error message has this hexadecimal number:  0x000000C5.  The parameters that follow in parentheses vary.http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/w2kmsgs/1121.asp

So manually means take the BATTERY out?Either that or finding the jumper that belongs to the CMOS.

Remember that not all Motherboards have CMOS jumper. But all of them do have a CMOS battery.Ok IM gona try take out the battery now, for how many seconds, 10?ELEVEN to play it safe.

Do turn off your computer and remove the power cable as well.WOOT! MAN THANKS! The pin that was sticking out wasn't to take out the battery, it was to reset it alone. I thought it helped taking out the battery, but i just hold the pin for 20 seconds and started my comp up. After i did the mem test and i thought i didnt work since it said CMOS Error, but then it said starting with defaults WOOT thanks so much man !

-----should i try a different clock or am i lucky as is? hehA BIOS that isn't functioning properly isn't too uncommon if you change settings and experiment, but you COULD consider yourself lucky that you haven't fried anything YET..

Solve : help restoring back to factory condition?

I have recently been given a Dell optiplex 150. The reason my friend gave it to me is she just doesn't use it but she can not remember the ADMINISTRATOR password she used. We can get in with her username she used on it as guest level(not clear on why she did this). But to change major things(even some minor)you have to be logged in as administrator. She didn't use it for very much and doesn't have a lot of computer knowledge,so now it is very limited in what you can do on it for me to use.It has windows xp pro. I can get in a lot of the system under safe mode but I STILL don't have enough access to delete some things on it. I have TRIED to do systems restore under safe mode but it says there isn't enough memory. Is there a trick to Dells for restoring it back to factory condition? On my Acer I have a recovery disc to do that and my SISTERS HP you hit F10 and recovery will start. She does not have all of the stuff the store told her to keep. Like the windows BOOKLET or driver discs... If you have anything you can think of I would really appreciate it. As the computer is...it is useless to me.

anyone think flashy towers with the clear side case, neon lights and a ton of fans too flashy? or pretty NEAT.... i have on myself red/blue/green neonlights in the Fan on the side wall, and a stright 1 foot blue neon bulb inside clear case... LOOKS awesome Good if you won the lottery. In a few years they'll probably discover that neon lights actually CONTAIN harmful irradiants and you'll all START to glow Yellow, Blue and Green.

Wow boy, am I lucky I never bought any of that.If that's what you're into then it's great.  There's lots of mods available.  As flashy as it may be though, if you can't cool your parts or don't have enough processing power then I'd sink my CASH into upgrades.

do you have a firewall?I don't think so but I don't know - how do I check?

Thanks
Are you using a Router? Then you most likely have a hardware firewall.

If you are using Windows XP 2 you will most likely have, without knowing, the XP 2 firewall installed and activated.

If none of these apply to you, there may be a Firewall icon in your system tray such as ZONE Alarm or another type of Firewall.

I suggest you read through this article to learn more about Firewalls.

Solve : what is the difference?

Answer»

What is the difference between a Anthlon XP3200 + and a Pentium 4.  I am trying to buy a NEW computer and I do not know which one to get.AMD runs hotter but may cost LESS.

If I were you, I'd GO for Intel ..

Intel Pentium 4 processor

AMD Athlon™ XP Product Information

Use these pages to compare them. Both are so fast, you'll never notice the difference.  Other things are more important, especially memory (get at least 512MB), and hard drive speed (look for 7200rpm).
