Install sound card drivers. These can be OBTAINED either from the manufacturers website or the CD-ROM/Diskette that came with your sound card.

Computer Sound Card Helpwell, i went to their website..and it only states instructions on how to uninstall a sound card to install a third-party sound card..i would try that but..i dont understand the directions.. :-/ sorry im not too familiar with computers. That is not their website, it is a general help page. You will have to obtain the name of the soundcard and use a search machine such as Google to find their webpage. Or get the adress from the manual

Solve : Noisy Computer?

Answer»

My computer recently became very noisy, thinking it could be the fan I went inside and cleaned it, then plugged it in without cover to see if there was anything I could see wrong too.  Seemed fine, but it's still very noisy.  Is there anything else in my comp. that would all of the sudden start being  noisy?  I have an  HP XE783.  Other than the noise, the comp.  runs the same as always.  Is it safe to keep using it, what else can I check?billie_baby.....When you had the cover off and the pc running ...where does the noise seem to be coming from and what kind of a noise is it ? Is it a clunking sound ? A whinning sound ?

let us know

dl65
ok ill try to describe it...its like a refrigerator running....it winds up then idles...then winds up again and idles...not a TYPICAL whinning though more like a reving up of a motor...kinda  honestly cant reall tell where the noise is coming from  but it didnt seem to be that fan
billie_baby......WELL it could be the fan thats on the heat sink.....when you first opened up the case was there a lot of dust on and around the fan ?  What about the fan in the power supply? . The other thing is do you know if you have a variable speed fan on your processor ....it will change speed as required .
Do you have any monitoring software installed that will let you monitor the fan speed and voltage to it ?

dl65  billie_baby.....Go to the link below and download....
PC Wizard 2004...its not very big but it will give you a good idea of whats giong on re the fan speed and the voltages.
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3846.html

dl65  Have you tried disconnecting components with fans and other moving objects (such as Hard Disk Drives) (DONOT disconnect the CPU fan) to see what could be causing the problem?

Only disconnect components when your system is disconnected from the wall socket and take proper precautions before handling sensitive equipment.
I want to thank all of u for your HELP, especially DLB and the chat helper..he sent me to the HP page concerning heat in comp, and how to take the pc apart to get to the fans, the 2 fans did need cleaning but what was causing the problem was a loose screw to one fan, (I think)after I cleaned and tightened every thing, its very quiet.  ty again

Solve : How do I re-start my computer??

Answer»

I am having trouble with my computer, it freezes all the time, often it freezes when i just turn it on, I want to totally re-start it, erase all files and PROGRAMS, is their a way to totally re-fresh the computer? if so how?Depending on what Operating System you are using you can do it in two diffferent ways:

Use a Bootdisk that you insert on boot up or use the Windows XP CD-ROM. If you are using windows XP, set your first boot device to CD-ROM in the BIOS.

When using a Bootdisk, you should be taken to a MS-DOS ENVIRONMENT where you can TYPE Format C: which will erase ALL data on the C: drive. (You can Format partitions individually)

When using the Windows XP CD-ROM you SELECT the option to install Windows XP and it will prompt you that a copy has allready been found. From there you can format HARD Disk Drives and Partitions and create new ones.

DO NOT put the CD in the DRIVE before the boot process is completed. Select cdrom support and wait for the A:> prompt. Watch the screen and it will tell you what the drive letter of the cdrom is. Put the cd in and change to that drive.

Solve : Turn on or Off??

Answer»

I have a "dumb" QUESTION. Should you or should you NOT turn your computer off after you're done for the day or whatever?  Some people say yes, others say NO, leave it on all the time. What's the best?  Really appreciate a good answer. mommalove44433....Well , I dont think there is a one word answer to that question. It's entirely up to you. I leave my P/c s on 24 /7 s ...the only time I shut them down is if I'm doing any maintainence on them or if we are going to be away for an extended period of time.
I have friends that will turn their p/c on and off a dozen times a day....and when I ask them why ...they say ah ....someone told me to do that. or so I will save on the electric bill......or it may cause a FIRE ......Think about it .....do you think that the banks or big corporations shut down their computers when they go home at night.
How about the Internet /Service providers.......Some companies dont EVEN turn off their lights in the off hours.....its actually cheaper to leave them on .
In conclusion I say again ...the decision is yours .....do what you feel comfortable with.

Hope this HELPS you make your decision

dl65   Quote

Speaking as a utilities manager, I've got to say, it is not cheaper to leave them on.

I do agree that it is a matter of preference.  I personally switch of the monitor when away from the computer.  The Monitor draws the most power and switching it off is the best form of screen saver.  I switch it all off at night unless I'm doing bakups or running diagnostic checks.  Most fires are caused from electrical wiring and happen at night.Turning it off is BETTER for your karma. Less power consumption.

Solve : No startup at all?

Answer»

I have a problem:  I have replaced most of the parts on a Gateway solo 5300 including the HD, motherboard, and heatsink fan and still have nothing.  It has power to the HD now and the light comes on for one SECOND and then goes off.  The heat sink fan is running and when the CD-ROM is in it tries to run, but nothing comes on the screen.  I have not formatted the HD yet and when left out the computer does the same thing, nothing.  It ran fine until I had a low voltage surge in my home and then it quit.  Any suggestions are welcome.  Thanks! What exactly did you replace?

The surge may have damaged your mainboar and/or processor. Did you replace those?

If you replaced EITHER of those, did you check to see if the cables are connected properly?I replaced the motherboard, HD, and heat sink.  This is a laptop so there aren't any cable to check besides the internal wiring and I did that.  I did not replace the processor. You'll have to wait for a member to come online who has GOT experience with laptops. I have nay.replace the hard drive....re-boot hit the f1/2....bios..check the settings to default...did you check the jumper settings on the mobo>and did you take of the cmos battery? Quote

Solve : help my mom!?

Answer»

What would cause my mom's computer to kick her off line?  She uses Outlook Express for her mail - plays a couple games on Pogo and that's about it...Odd things happen - getting kicked off line in the middle of one of her games or while trying to type and send an email...
her address book disappearing - error msgs - she's had her phone lines checked - her internet carrier is no help at all - the guy that built her comp. always has her take it back to him - he has it a couple days and says he can't get it to do anything she's saying it does at home! I don't have the comp. specs...but it's less than a yr. old.
I've sugg. she buy a Dell or Gateway for good online help.  She's ready to give up on something that's taken me years to get her to use!sewsandi.......Tell Mom not to get excited its just a tool.
Now.......what operating system does it have ?
Is it connected to the net via a dialup or hispeed connection?  I'm not defending the guy that built it ......but when he has it in his shop , he is probably USING a differant isp than your Mom is at home .....and if the problem is with the ISP it would not show up there . Is this something that has just started ?
Does she have a good anti virus program installed?
What are the error messages ?
When did the address book diappear?
let us know.
dl65  She has XP Home - it's a dial up connection - her address book disappeared when she unplugged her computer and had her brother (they're both in their 70's) set his Dell up to trouble check all her electrical.  (all the elec. seemed fine using his comp.)  She uses Panda Scan (sp?) for her anti-virus prog.
Basically she's complained about odd things HAPPENING on her last 2 comp. (she's on her 4th).  Getting kicked off has been a prob. for quite awhile - it's just gotten worse lately.  I'm willing to try anything, but I'm 200 miles away and trying to help via emails or the phone.
You guys are awesome!! I didn't expect a reply so soon!
Thanks!!I'm sorry but I can't tell you what the error msgs. are.  I've emailed her and she said those aren't coming up like they used to.
VIRUSES & Spyware *CLICK HERE*

Perhaps you should create an account for your mother that gives her very limited access. To protect both her and the computer..Dear Raptor.....

Funny but no help................. :-/sewsandi.....The disappearing address book is the odd thing in your POST......Is it possible that Mom may have accidently deleted it ? however if she didnt .....and you are sure there are no viruses in her machine......you could use the System restore FEATURE in Xp to restore the p/c to a date before the address book disappeared.
As far as the loss of dialup is concerned ......given there is nothing wrong with the modem or the modem settings......its more than possible that the problem may lie with the isp........Some of them are really bad......they will boot people off.... if their system senses any lenghty periods of inactivity. Is it possible to try another service provider or consider a hi speed connection?

Hope this helps

I have found out that the ISP i use has a system information in programs and I was told to go to it and click utilities and delete temps files which take up space in hard drive. When I play pogo it leaves lots of stuff behind. when in utilities click clear browser chahe it mat take several times but put back to zero. and go to control panel and internet options and delete temps there also. Then in windows explorer click windows and then cookies edit slected all and then file delete. then go to temp files and click to open edited and slect all then file delete This will help free up memory and keep her on lineAdvanced System Optimizer V2 is a program that will go deeper when it comes to cleaning your system. Solve : TROJAN HORSE/VIRUS Removal ??

Answer»

Hello,
I have a TROJAN horse virus on my computer that was detected using AVG's free virus scan software. I was able to remove some of the viruses and there is one left that the AVG software was unable to get rid of.  It says Worm.Nachi B was detected. This is a very big PROBLEM b/c it is affecting my setup and internet connection -- It is not allowing me to SET up a firewall on my new ISP!! This has my computer shutting down on me at any given time when I am online due to some "NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM" TERMINATION error. And when i boot my computer up, it takes a very long time to start. I have Windows XP and my pc is relatively new, so i shouldn't have these problems. What software/remedies would you suggest?

Thanks
Tiffani
PS please let me know if there is any other info you need. You could try to GOOGLE for the removal tool. Or you could visit the Symantec web site.  They usually have removal instructions.  If all else fails you could system restore to an earlier time.          HTTP://www.symantec.com/index.htm
Good Luck You may be able to remove the Trojan by running the virus scanner from Safe mode.

Solve : XP unable to power off automatically?

Answer»
my PC is unable to power off automatically after being upgraded to XP. What can i do to deal with this problem. And the standby function is also not SHOWN now.
Help me pls. Thanks alotTomnjerry,

Make sure the power settings in Windows XP are properly setup. You can check this by clicking Start, Settings Control Panel, clicking on the Power icon. In the Power Options Properties window make sure the computer is set to power off when you press the power button (or however you wish to the computer to turn off when pressing the power button). In addition you may wish to enable hibernation mode under the hibernate tab.

If this is set to power off it’s possible that your computers ACPI may conflict or have problems with Windows XP. Check your power settings in CMOS setup. USUALLY you can enter CMOS setup by pressing the F1 or F2 to enter setup when the computer is first booting (these keys may be different). Within CMOS check for power schemes, and attempt to temporarily disable any value that is enabled.

Finally, if you are still encountering power related issues you may WANT to check with your computer and/or motherboard manufacturer for any BIOS updates that may NEED to be added after upgrading to Windows XP.
Have you enabaled your automatic microsoft updates?
Go to: www.microsoft.com for your critical updates and patches. What does that got to do with power?check the date of this post

All i notice is the sound of the computer humming like normal and both my cd drive light on the front of the computer both flashing very fast. I had my buddy slave my hard drive to his computer BASICALLY get rid of any virus. He got rid of all the viruses. Ok maybe that will fix it, brought home and did the same thing as above.

It freezes again, oh great now what. it won't reboot so i POWER of the powerbar and turn back on, but this time it  takes a hour to get to desktop. AN it freezes again and it won't load up.

Is this computer connected to the INTERNET?
If so.....if you have Screen Shot, Weather Bug, or any other simular programs that ACCESS the internet in the background, and then was palying games on computer..
you may need new motherboard. I've only seen a similar problem one time, and it was caused by a bad cdrom drive. Disconnect the cd's power plug and see if it boots OK.

Solve : connected but cannot access?

Answer»

I'm new so please bear with me.  I have sbc DSL connected to a LINKSYS router ethernet model BEFSR41.  When in internet explorer it gives me the message Cannot FIND Server, and AOL will tell me there is no connection when trying to LOG on.  I've had this problem in the past where I just log onto my router where it usually tells me it cannot connect for whatever reason, then I fix it and it eventually connects.  This time, it tells me it's already connected, and to make things more confusing, my Morpheus program can easily access the download search (not the web search) and is continuously downloading items.  Please help, sorry for the really long post.  WinXP OS with IE 6.0 AOL 9.0

{don't know if it has anything to do with the problem, but I had been on IE online, then got off, uninstalled DU download accelerator, restarted (it think)then when I tried to go back on IE I couldn't get online.}
I do routine checkups with Spydoctor and Ad-aware, and every other month or so Spybot.
Try this:  Unplug your router from  WALL outlet and then if you have a DSL modem do the same....for about 30 sec
It will assign a new IP ......Also if your router has firewall
protection you may have to disable the firewall in the network connection  (default) folder on your PC.  Also if you have more than 1 PC connected to router make sure that they are turned off as well......this also includes XBOX and Tivo. Restart your PC then your DSL, wait until the go lights on DSL, then plug in your router.
Best of luck!

Only while playing GAMES or when I tried to use the restore disks. That's the ONLY time I've EVER had it to power off. It can be running all day and night, then I'll be on the internet for hours or editing pictures, etc. It never powers off, just during the times I mentioned above.
StephanieIt sounds like the computer is doing what it's supposed to do...shutdown if upper temperature limit is exceeded.  Limit may be set too HIGH.  CONSULT your owner's manual.

Did you follow dl65's advice, above?

I'm only 14 years OLD and everyone in my family is to lazy to figure out whats wrong with our computer accept me. So I came upon this wonderful site

Anyway heres our problem... We have an HP Pavalion, its new. It was working fine the first few months we got it. But one day it just randomly decided not to let us access our USER accounts   Meaning no one can use the computer.

When I tryed to log onto my user account, I typed in my password and it said "Loading Settings" Which it normally does... But then it said "Logging off" and it logged off before I even had time to use my account.. This happens every time. With mine, my sister's and my mom's accounts.

If someone could give me some FREE advice on this that would be super. Cuz my mom refuses to waste more money on this computer. I am writing this from my lap top which is really annoying and I miss my regular computer I would greatly appriciate any HELP.  brandnewx3234534534523......So no one can use that pc ......It's possible there may be a virus which is preventing access.......can you boot it up in the safe mode ?

And I did not receive "a message indicating that the grace period has expired and that you must activate Windows XP now." Not only that, we don't have the CD; XP was included with the computer.Return it to the point of sales and show them your receipt in order to obtain warranty you paid for.

Solve : Extra Bandwith?

How can I use more bandwith that I have?

I KNOW its impossible, but I was using bearshare and downloading something, and for those of you who dont know, bearshare monitors bandwith. So when im downloading it says I am downloading at 7.9 mb/s, and I was going that fast for about 3 seconds before I dropped to 3.2 mb/s and then finally to about 1.1 mb/s. The problem with this is, I my internet connection is only 3mb/s. Can someone explain, and say more than bearshare miscalculated.what modem/router and what connection have you got adsl/cable..............more info..How Stuff WORKS - How Internet Infrastructure Works

Your speed depends on the amount of people CONNECTED to your server. And the amount the provider CAPPED your modem at, ofcourse.

As for Bearshare.. I didn't hear too many good things about use Torrents instead.

Solve : Athlon/pentium/celeron - how to choose??

Answer»

Hi everyone
I have to buy a new computer - mine is far outdated -and I have to choose between such processors as celeron, athlon and pentium.  Now pentium is easy to understand - p4 is better than p3.  But athlon and celeron and anything else out there is all gobbledegook to me!  Can anyone give me the processor 101 to help me make my choice.
ThanksIt is very easy.

Choose AMD and you will be suffering with heat problems for the rest of the processor/mainboard life or choose Intel and never have any worries unless you DECIDE to overclock it.

Celeron and Pentium are the same brand; Intel .

Athlon is made by AMD.

Hello Raptor
So THAT's what the guy in the store meant when he said they were hot.  I thought he meant they were the most popular!!!
OK so if I rule out athlon then if YOU were comparing celeron and pentiums IS one better than the other?  AMD processors also require more power to function.

Here is an interesting link for you:

Intel Desktop Processor Comparison Chart

I do not know if a Celeron is more powerful than a Pentium.

I made the mistake of buying AMD. And I recently had to replace it because I had damaged my CPU whilst attempting to install a new cooler. Thanks I'll CHECK out the site.
I think that learning from someone far more knowledgable than I that the amd processors are notoriously hot and therefore not the best choice will be probably one of the best bits of information I could hope to gain.
I know nothing about celeron v pentium, though I note that computers with celeron processors inside seem to cost less than pentiums.  Perhaps this is something to consider in that you get what you pay for?T W.....When selecting a new computer..there are several things to consider.  what do you plan on doing with it. How many dollars are you prepared to spend.
you have had one before so you should have some idea of what you want.....If you are into games ...them you want a fast powerful processor with a fair bit of ram .
As far as processors go there are two choices......
INTEL or AMD and they both make good units......
Intel has the Pentium and Celeron.
AMD Athlon64 .....64 bit technology.....
Typically the AMD processors tend to run a little warmer than the INTEL......but if you use them for what they were designed for they preform just fine......I have 1 pc with a AMD processor and 1 with a Pentium  and they both work fine......however I can tell you that the Pentium has more power than the AMD ....even though the AMD is  a faster processor.
If you have the money .....then go for a P4 or a AMD 64
and beyond that its up to you as to what you want.

Hope this helps

dl65  all amd .....are overclocked that way they run hot ....intel cpu...celeron is the cheapo vresion of intel and a bit sluggish...p3 or 4..is the way to go supported by ddram and a nice witney mobo........no need for flash plug-in GRAPHICS card..as intel has its own graphic ACCELERATOR which no one uses let the cpu work)..some do some dont.Okay, you dont need to read any of these peoples responses. AMD are great, really fast and if you know how to SETUP a computer you will be happy. But Pentium is the way to go to be safe. Next step, Celeron is way slower and weaker then Pentium. Celeron is great for the net and word processing and things that dont require alot of punch. Pentium 4 persay is for gaming, and a really fast computer when it comes to say video editing and stuff of that sort. You got a few Grand to spend Look at www.alienware.com you can get some of the best most porwerful and safe computers there are. And they have a great setup with Athalon processors. they dont burn up. They also have great computers that use Pentium... Good luck. Quote

Okay, you dont need to read any of these peoples responses. AMD are great, really fast and if you know how to setup a computer you will be happy. But Pentium is the way to go to be safe.

Solve : Internet Access on Multiuser computer?

Answer»

I SHARE my computer with other users, and I WANT to disable the INTERNET access on their accounts on my computer to prevent them from viewing things they should not be looking at.  I am running Windows XP Home.  Please help me.   :-/You can configure the Windows XP firewall to block the Internet Connection.

Open Network Connections, right click on your Network card and head to the Advanced tab. Enable the Firewall from there and press the now unlocked "Configure" button to configure the firewall. However, I donot know if this can be done per account. You could turn it on when you are not using the computer and turn it off when you are.

I know that when I was in school certain students had access to certain things that OTHERS did not, and I thought that the internet was one of those though I could be wrong, not to mention the school was on a very large network. They could have been blocked by the use of a ROUTER.

Router

These usually offer options to block users from the Internet from certain times. They also offer additional protection if a firmware firewall is present.I am just talking about various user accounts on one computer running XP Home.  There isn't a router or anything like that.  I know you can set it up so that the other user accounts have access to somethings but not all of them.  I just do not want them to be able to access IE.You can download a password app. and set it to lock explorer so only you can use it (unless someone guesses the password), that way only you have explorer access and you can share if you want, just change the password after, although that may get tedious...Thanks I think I will try that.

Solve : Meaning of beep explanations.?

Answer»

I am curious as to what these errors mean:

  • DRAM refresh failure
  • Display/Retrace test failed
  • DRAM refresh failure

And possible solutions to these problems, if avaible?Raptor...........

1 Beep: DRAM refresh failure

Explanation: The system is having a problem accessing the system memory to refresh it. Refreshing is done on all system memory to keep its contents active.

Diagnosis: This code usually means a problem either with the system memory or with the motherboard itself.

Recommendation:

Troubleshoot the motherboard.
Treat as an apparent memory failure.

hope this helps...
dl65
Raptor

8 short: Display memory Read/Write test failure
The motherboard cannot write to the frame buffer of your video card. Something is either wrong with the video card, with the video card memory, or the motherboard. Btw if the system continues to boot this is not unusual: this is not a stop error code.

Hope this answers your question.

dl65
Much obliged, Dl65.

The other users were very uncareful when opening their PC, leaving standby POWER on whilst removing and INSERTING different videocards.

The computer only had a monitor issue that would cause the monitor to flicker when accessing webpages and other Windows related things.

Now that they are done through it, it shows all these errors.

So far they have done:

Leaving standby power on whilst switching videocards. (They claim they did not, however, I caught them red handed.)

I have done for them to see if it would do any good:

Reset BIOS (Removed CMOS battery)
Booted with only the onboard videocard (Even after resetting, a frequency out of range error showed)

Do you think they could have damaged the mainboard beyond repair? Would removing and using the different RAM slots work?

As for the Display memory Read/Write test failure

Even after resetting the BIOS and using only the onboard videocard it still gives the same problem.

The computer only had a monitor issue that would cause the monitor to flicker when accessing webpages and other Windows related things  raptor
------------------------------------------------------------------------what was the refresh rate on this monitor...some video cards are hot swapable? The onboard videocard is now being used and the flickering still occurs.

Refresh rates of 75HZ and 85Hz have been tried.

No monitor drivers have been installed, but according to Windows XP, they are within the monitors capabilities.do you want try the test?>http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/11/2/5/11-2-5-4.shtmlThank you Merlin, however, I donot think software will help resolve this issue. I have tried to calibrate the monitor but it was of no use.

The computer store repaired their PC, but they failed the mention the CORE of their problem: The flickering visual WHENEVER accessing an Explorer window (Both Internet Explorer and Explorer)

The computer store put in the exact same videocard again because the onboard videocard gives a 'Frequency out of Range' error.

However, this is a tool I have been looking for. (Remember my request for such a program and you pointed me to the Huey tool?)
