Running XP with SP1....had a lot of problems with service pack 2 so I restored to before installing it....had problems with the site before I installed it though (serivce pack 2)Did you perhaps block a cookie from download.com?

Can my phone service  three-way calling feature be used to connect to my isp TWICE ? How can it be done & will it double speed ?Won't work. You can USE two modems on two different phone lines IF your ISP SUPPORTS it.

I have a cable modem and I recently configured my email through Earthlink to go to Outlook Express. For some reason I keep getting prompted to enter a password for dial-up. I have followed the directions from Earthlink to a T. However, at first I was able to RECEIVE messages but not send them. Nothing left my outbox. So I played around with it a little following Earthlink directions and now it's all screwed up. Any ideas? Not sure if I should be saying that I Broadband or that I"m running on a LAN connection or what because cable modem is not an option, although I tried to write in that I had Optimum and it didn't work.Nancy Shemo.....Sounds to me as if you havent got your E mail account properly configured.....Once you tell it your using lan you should never see the dialup request for username and password.......DIG out your mail setup info from your service provider and open outlook express
click on tools......then select accounts.......then click on the mail tab.....then click add and answer the questions and when FINISHED click ok ( I think) and set the new account as the default .
You will need to know      the POP 3 info and the SMPT info

You can not add adresses to it. Perhaps some programs will ALLOW you, but I have never seen anyone *that* lazy.

Rickonadvertize in the local PRESS and start in a small way to gain a  repretation for at least a year or more....do your homework on all partsits a CUT THROAT trade as more people would rather ditch their pc then repair it...but no advice really can be GIVE the choice is yours and yours alone...You might wish to take a few classes and get an A+  technician certification, some people like those little pieces of paper. Also, consider an ongoing training program, as time and finances dictate. The more you learn can't hurt.

I am using a Windows XP.  While installing a REGISTRY Backup, it was my wish to place it in My Documents.   A small window informed me that "so & so" already existed and asked if I wanted to overwrite.   I believed that the reference was to Registry Backup.   Although I knew I had not installed it previously, I clicked YES.   To my horror, I discovered that the entire contents of My Documents was gone.   The Recycle Bin is empty and two different tries at System Restore did no good.         Is there any way I can RECOVER the contents of My Documents ?                      FRANK's Thankseither re-boot pc keep tapping the f8 key on boot and chose the last good config.....or there is this>http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThere are usually two folders that contain your documents.

I suggest you use Windows Explorer to open them.

One can be accessed by going to C:\Documents and SETTINGS and the other one by simply clicking underneath the desktop icon in Windows Explorer.

Hi, I NEED some advice/tips on how to do something if anyone here could plz do so. I put together a new computer and bought a new SATA harddrive. It was simple to format as it comes with the software to do so. Then I INSTALLED the harddrive (labeled drive E) from my old computer as a slave to the new SATA drives master. My question is: how can i reformat drive E (the slave) and better yet write all zeros to it deleting all data, so that I can use it as a pure storage drive? Most things I can figure out for myself but was a little nervous to experiment with this with little knowledge as I dont want to accidently mess up my loaded new hard drive.  My operating SYSTEM is winxp home, my master hard drive is labeled "D" and is manufactured by Maxtor. My slave harddrive is labeled "E" and is a ATA made by western digital. If anyone cares to tell me how to do this I would much appreciate it....thank you  If you're sure there is nothing on it that needs to be recovered, just go My computer, right click on the drive icon, and select Format.You could use a a driver cleaner program to completely erase all data.is driver cleaner software DOWNLOADABLE from online or is this something that i need to purchase?I never used that type of software myself, but if you wish to thoroughly clean your harddisk a program such as Evidence Eliminator or Driver Cleaner that comes with System Mechanic Pro are good choices. Would it be SAFE to assume that there was already one cd rom in the pc and you were putting in a second one? Did you remember to set the jumper to either slave or cable select ? I also assume you meant you were too lazy to turn the pc off because if it was off you've really got problems .....
Did you UNPLUG the 2nd cd drive and try to reboot the pc ?

dl65  new mobo please....you may be lucky and you may have blown the psu...the plug you were refering to is  a power lead which come from the psu to the cdom drive hardive ETC .... check to see if  all the main fuses are in tact first or borrow or buy another psu....

I have norton 2003 systemworks. I was checking e-mail and it said it quarentined an e-mail. It wasn't OPENED norton auto. quarentined. Just 2 b sure I ran virus scan and it found 6 more in system (repaired them and I ran again showing none. I was scanning a picture I drew and try 2 send it via e-mail. the picture was only about 2x3''s, it was taking 4ever 4 norton 2 check it outgoing. I stopped process and found it was showing the picture 2 b 24.5 mb. lol no way a 2x3" picture is this huge! I thought maybe my scanner files became CORRUPT so I un-installed it. When I went 2 re-INSTALL it KEEPS saying install wizard is having problems. ( when I start system it gives me c:\windows\system32\netdc.exe) not typed in correctly.......automatically! When I think back trying 2 re-install the scanner it was using that file. I never typed or had anything 2 do with C:\windows******. It was a trojan virus that norton quarentined. How do I reformat xp from the disk.I've never done anything like that........and will it help? PLEASE HELP. I suggest you format any partitions and possibly other harddrives from Windows XP whilst you can still boot. Once that is done, boot using the Windows XP CD, select the XP Install option, tell it on what drive or partition you wish to install it.

If you wish XP to format the harddrive or partition where the OS is currently installed on, you should choose that drive to install XP on. It will prompt you that an OS is allready installed and if you wish to format the drive first.

How is it measured? Are the stats very accurate or loosely based on input by users?

I am creating this topic because I am very interested in what the people here (That have an AMD processor installed) do to keep their processor running cool.

I understand that 60 degrees celcius is an accepted minimum temperature by many AMD users (Including technical support) but this does bother me.

It seems like no matter what kind of cooler I install (Zalman, Glacialtech, standard AMD or a Coolermaster) it still seems to circulate around 60 degrees celcius. System temperature is at 40 degrees celcius and ambient temperature at 26.8

I would like to know what kind of attempts people have made to cool their processor and what kind of equipment they used.

I currently have installed:

1 Q-tec case fan (Blowing out)
1 disconnected Q-tec fan that blows in (Obstructed airflow due to massive amounts of cables and a far too large videocard)
1 Aero 7 Lite by Coolermaster with Arctic Silver
1 malfunctioning Northbridge fan (Only the heatsink works,  Fan keeps rattling like a rattlesnake on steroids)
1 ATi/Radeon 9800Pro (With a small fan + heatsink)
1 Chieftec 420 Watt Dual fan silent PSU (Which seems to become much warmer than my Qtec 400 Watt dual fan silent PSU)

and my temperatures are:

System: 40 Degrees Celcius
CPU: 63 Degrees Celcius
Ambient: 26.8 (At 2232 during somewhat of a summer.)

I just checked the TEMPS .......
Processor temp ..........35.4 C
Hard drive temp ..........45 C
Aux power temp ..........40.2 C
Ambient temp...............26 C
I have one side panel off right now.

My other pc has a P3 600 in it and its temp is 32.6 C

Both my pc's run 24 ...7

Perhaps check your processor and see if there is a REAL good POSITIVE connection between the chip and the heat sink......and is there sufficient thermal paste to enable good heat transfer. Also check the heat sink for any dust buildup.
I would also consider changing the heatsink fan it could be the problem.

The CPU and CPU Fan are brand new, it's not a matter of dust settling in.  It has even got some Arctic Silver applied ontop of the standard CPU paste (Which was more of a patch rather than paste). It takes some time for the arctic silver to properly work.

It's just that 60 degrees celcius are 'reasonable' temperatures for an AMD processor. I am just wondering what people do to go below that.

I suggest you put the side panel back on, it only causes more dust to be sucked in. If I put my sidepanel off, my computer is about 10 degrees cooler.

Yes you are right about the side panel.......However I keep a can of "Ultra Duster" ( compressed air ) handy to keep the dust away .
The info you will see dislayed by pc wizard will depend on what type and number of sensors your motherboard has......but it a excellant utility......there a many available I just use this one.

dl65  I have tried that PC Wizard 2004 before, it made my sensors go haywire and REPORT temperatures over 80 degrees. Which in turn made my PC speaker go mental.
It was not a very pleasant sight.

I have gotten alot of help on this for my mom's puter, but have still not been ABLE to fix.  1st it will not boot in safe mode to repair that way.  I TRIED to reseat the video card, but just can't GET to it.  I brought her monitor to my HOUSE and hooked her monitor to my computer and monitor is fine.

Why can you not reinstall the videocard?

If it as an AGP card, you should keep in mind that it may be locked into the AGP slot by a small pin (Depends on the type of mainboard) That has to be pulled out in order to unhook the card.

What is a vfw drive?  do all COMPUTERS have one?  if so, where's mine?  i'm trying to use my new video camera thingy that I just hooked up, and everytime I click on the icon to use it, it says "Can't find VFW drive".  What am I doing wrong?stephanie.....I'm not sure but I think its something related to the software for your vid cam.....Perhaps have a read of the manual which CAME with the camera ...it MAY explain what it is ......It may be that you havent INSTALLED all the software ...or it isnt configured correctly.

I assume you have installed the latest drivers for your videocard?

I am unable to INSTALL programs while the anti virus is installed (Panda)(same result with norton). Can any one help?Does it attempt to scan files WHILST INSTALLING? Usually, for Norton, a pop-up menu should appear in the lower right corner that asks you for permission to scan a certain file. Give it permission.

If that menu is not there, I suggest you reconfigure Norton.

After the pc shuts down....afew minutes later it turns itself back on....?Go into your network settings. LOCATE the properties for your ethernet (nic) card, and disable "wake on LAN".When going into network connections I am not able to find disable lan wake up icon or area.

I am always trying to get rid of any files that I do not use or are obsolite.So I keep downloading Maintaince programs to try to free up memory and see if I can run faster and smoother. I'm quite stupid, I don't even understand where this question should be posted, or even if it will make sense to anybody, anyway, here goes...
I have Kazaa and I want to make some music CDs. The problem is the CD drive on the computer which all my music is stored on doesn't work. Is there anyway I could use the DVD drive to make CDs? Or will I have to transfer all my music to my other computer which can make CDs? In the second case, which is the best way to do this, by floppy disk, e-mail myself the songs or what? There are literally hundreds of songs to transfer (if need be).
I hope somebody will understand this question, and help me!
Thanks xI donot believe you can write CD's with a DVD-Writer, I do believe there are combo-writers avaible.

I suggest you remove the malfunctioning CD-ROM Writer/Reader and install a new one. This would be the easiest solution to your problem.

You could also take out your harddisk and CONNECT it to the computer as a slave and copy music as you normally would.


Most E-mail providers donot offer enough filespace to transfer large files.

Floppies are not capable of TRANSFERING larger files than 1.44MB. With the exception of even smaller disks.

why not get YOUSELF another hard drive a transfer them  or transfer your files to a dvd/r disk and get the right software to play them back like power dvd ..I don't really know what the problem is on your CD drive, really_stupid. But why don't you try to reinstall the driver for that cd drive, it might be caused by driver problem. You can use literally hundreds of program to burn your music to CD: Nero, CDex, Jukebox, even Windows Media Player. If you want to send the music by email, it will take long time and a lot of effort. I used free yahoo service as my email server. It can load up to 10 MB of file per send message. One other solution, you can use a USB drive to transfer it.There are DVD-RW drives that can burn CDs, but Iagree with Raptor about getting a new CD-RW. If your drive is bad, you will have to get one anyway. Also, an external hard drive is a good alternitive, I KEEP my data files on one.

Another choice would be to get an utility to transfer files between PCs, e.g PC CLone (~$30) This is from CompUSA

My question is about these new USB 2.0 external hard drives and how they work in relation to the existing drive(s)? Do they just take the next drive letter and work as ADDITIONAL drive space for the computers storage as well as operational disk space for processing data or are they for storage and back-up only?An external USB hard can be used just like an internal drive. The drive should take the next available letter (ex. mine is G:, after the DVDs).

I don't see any performance issues, but if you are using an application that does a lot of disk access, I couldn't say. Also, you can use it just for backup.

     Thanks for the information! On the motherboard, operating system and application, it’s an old P-II 600 MHz, XP-Home and creating DVDs. Note I didn’t say copying DVDs! The PRESENT C:/ = 20 G-byte and D:/ = 10 G-byte! There’s a 2.0 USB card with a Pinnacle Movie Box so I need a drive to store and create DVDs from VHF or 8-mm video tape.
It is legal to copy certain media. It depends on what was written in the EULA.

My other computer aint booting i'm missing win.com config.sys and emm386.exe  i dono what to do. help plz.download a boot floppy from www.bootdisk .com and format your drive...if more help is needed come back...Bootdisk.com gives the FOLLOWING VERSIONS of boot disks available to download.  What are the differences in each version  BTW, I am running WINDOWS 98 that came pre-installed on my Compaq/Presario 5242

is your computer a laptop or a desktop? Does your DSL COMPANY provide a router? A modem? Does it have wireless capability? These questions need to be answered before you purchase a network card. Do you need wireless access? If you do not have DSL in your room you will want to run an extension for your phone to this room or use wireless. Be careful of security issues if using wireless. You can send me messages directly if you need more info on setting up DSL for your computer. You can ALSO call tech support for configuration info.
It would help to know what exact make/model of laptop you have, since many new laptops come with wireless capability built-in.  If not, you need an 802.11b/g card, I'd go for the 802.11g card.

To be honest, I would never order a computer that is allready built. I would prefer to have a choice when it comes to individual components or even attempt to built one myself.

I would choose the Pentium.  Athlone processors have a reputation for overheating.

If it says XP home it means that it comes with an OS PROBABLY installed.  This could be a Genuine XP CD or a Recovery CD with a licence.  It is more common these days to find the latterfind an independant pc builder forgot hp/*censored* dell etc...have one built to do what you want it to do ...imhaoI would build my own but:

1) I dont know how to

I have these mail in rebate forms that I want to get out TODAY. Anyways, one form ask me for my computers Model #. I READ that I could find it on the back of my computer but I have looked and looked and cant find anything that says MODEL #.

I'm looking at the back of my computer and I'm wondering if what I'm looking for actually says Model Number or if it says something different and is actually the model. Like I say something called the Product Key with alot of numbers folllowing that. But I'm not sure.

What kind of computer do you have?What kind of model number? You will not find much on the back of your computer. Unless, it has been built for you by a company such as Dell. In which case I am not sure wheter you will find the Computer model number.

I SUGGEST you search through any avaible paperwork that belongs to your computer.the product  key is for windows.....have a look if you can inside the case..it maybe stamped on the METAL casing ALSO  a sticker maybe also found there...or look for the serial number has some pc makers may use this instead?

then format and REINSTALL 98se...My friend got this old desktop computer Dimension XPS P200s that was using Win98. Suddenly he wants to upgrade it to Win98SE to install it  for more convinience. So, he was using the Win98SE CD and upgrade it without have to format his hard drive. It took a while, but at last it was finished and now he's using Win98SE witout losing his old file. I am working on a computer that has Win98SE installed and it hangs while it is shutting down.

I started troubleshooting by disabling the IRQ settings and the PCI BUS. The computer still did not shut down.

The next step I took was to go into DOS and use the bios.vxd bios old command

Now when I turn on the computer, it will go through the POST, and end up on the 98 start MENU screen.  

The problem is that now the computer will not even recognize my keyboard or mouse so I can't get the command prompt only option.

Once it gets past the WINDOWS 98 screen I get a message that Windows did not Recognize the PS/2 mouse.

I assume you are talking about the FX-51 athlon processor. As you will most likely be using an NFORCE 3 MOTHERBOARD for the processor you will probably be using dual chanel mode for your ram (however i am no expert in this subject, having never owned such as board). I was told that FX-53 chips only work with 'registered' RAM and i am not sure if this is the same for FX-51 so i would advise reading into it further.

Dual channel does not directly relate to the FSB speeds. FSB is the Front side bus of the processor and while it is BENIFICIAL to run your RAM at a 1:1 ratio with your FSB but isnt essential.

 In a tip from one of the sites I belong to there was an artical conserning stored history in DOS/ what ever this is they use now. c-prompt. It does not recognize the deltree command. You have to use " DELETE*.* ", without the quotations. But ??
 Is there a way to get to the c-prompt without going through Windows.

DaveWhiteRiver...I don't know what it is your trying to do.....but if you want a C: prompt......why not .....CLICK "start" , then "Run" type cmd and press enter and you have a C: prompt.......or if you don't like that .....click start , All programs , Accessories , then select  command prompt .

Help! I went away for the afternoon and left my computer on. CAME home and went to log on yahoo and internet explorer like usual only nothing would open. SO my brother "Mr Know-It-All" decided to do system RESTORE. Only now, my computer will turn on (I have XP) But when I put in my password to open my account only my background shows up. I'm at a loss of what to do.See if you can find a DIFFERENT restore point.

Run sfc /scannow with your Windows CD in the drive.I can't, when I log in the only thing that shows up is my background. No START no desktop.

You might THINK I am cruel but I need to delete a load of games from one of our servers. They are stored all over the place in DIFFERENT folders. The server is a Common Server and EVERYBODY has Write Access. If I manually delete them somebody just copies them back up.

i noticed my scheduled tasks do not run automatically. This may have occured after I did a recovery and REINSTALLED norton system works.
my disk cleanup, and norton virus programs do not run when scheduled. They used to. In the status line, it reads "could not start."
I get error messages:
No mapping betwene account name and security IDs was done.
Can anyone offer some suggestions.
