Solve : How do u know if u have a bad stick of RAM??

Answer»

I was wondering how u would know if i had a bad stick of RAM? Just wondering because i have a Lexmark z12 printer and cant print anything out because i have a low memory thing pop up...  :-/ and it says to close other application or something like that.. no i dont have that many other apps RUNING ,but i still get it,so ,i'm thinkin bad ram stick
Im running an old Gateway, windows 98
Things that are running in startup........

Taskbar DISPLAY Controls
SystemTray
Multi-function Keyboard
LoadPowerProfile
IgfxTray
HotKeysCmds
GoBack Polling Service
LoadPowerProfile
SchedulingAgent
WEBSHOTS
Theres a BUNCH of other stuff there, but i dont have the BOX checked for them..(finding this out by the msconfig thing ), now is there anyway to get that stuff i dont use out of the start up box also?
ThanksFirst.. get rid of webshots.  It's a resource hog.  How much ram do you have?  You failed to mention any system specs at all.  If your system says you have less ram than what's in your box then you can start poking around.  I don't advocate spanking but really.. what else can you do with bad ram?hmmmmm system specs...lets see once......
633 bryant motherboard and processer, 128 motherboard memory module, 20 GB HDD
thats what the packin slip says Did you recently install new software when this started happening?the only thing i can think off is a mcaffee antivirus thing that has given me problems yet to be solved..thought it may have screwed up a port but it might have screwed up the printer too?
I have since uninstalled it , but from reading about it , theres some things it does to an autoexec.bat file or something..
but other than that nothing new, that comes to mind..
Just uninstalled webshots ,lets see if that does anything............

Solve : Harddisk space allocation?

Answer»

I would like to know a few things.

How much room would XP require as a minimum to function? (Taking into consideration that there has to be room for updates, cached files and other things Windows XP might require)

If I were to make a different partition for let's say.. Music, games, movies, applications and Windows on an 80GB maxtor and leave my 30GB Seagate (Older drive) for backups.

Would I increase the overal speed and efficiency of my Maxtor (80 GB) if I were to create several partitions for the types of files I would like to store?

Or would the performance STAY the same? I have never tried this, I am not too fond of formatting considering that I have a Windows XP upgrade and first have to go through installing Windows 98. Last time I tried, I must have USED (according to a computer store 'expert') a faulty Fdisk.

I donot recall how I created this Fdisk, I believe I downloaded it.

Would this be more efficient and faster? Or would I just run into problems later on?

Also, where does one place the swapfile? I believe I told Windows to store it on my 30GB Seagate (Slower disk).

What exactly does the swap file do? Is it important to have it stored on the same disk?I have 2 drives with 2 partitions each.  The first has 20G for C: and 100G for files.  The second has 25G for downloads and 175G for files.  I don't think there is any improvement in performance on the first drive since all the applications are installed to it and if I want to access a file on partition 2 the drive has to work just as hard to FIND the physical location of the file (1 drive doing 2 things at once).  I do have an increase in performance if I'm accessing a file on drive 2 though since I now have 2 drives doing different things (2 drives doing 1 thing at once each).

The XP installation is, I'm guessing, around 3G with updates etc.

By having all your files in a separate drive or partition, you free yourself up to format the C: anytime and not worry about losing data.  This, of course, ASSUMES you don't blow the partitions AWAY when you format.

Disable the firewall that comes with XP and use one such as ZONE Alarm.

This is much more reliable, user friendly and functions better.

Solve : Home Network Help?

Answer»

Last week I set up a home network of 3 computers: 2 PCs and 1 laptop. I plugged in the laptop (XP) and the 2nd PC (XP) to my router, and the internet worked immediatly. I set up the laptop and host PC (ME) to file share ... everything worked fine.

until ... my wife turned on the host computer yesterday (laptop was off) and it said "Could not connect to laptop, do you wish to establish this connection in the future? ETC etc". She clicked NO ... guh!!!!

So today, I fired up the laptop and host PC, and I couldnt file share. I TRIED to re-establish the connection and it wouldnt work. In the process I somehow killed the internet connection through the laptop. So now not only can I not file share between the host PC and laptop, I can't even get on the internet through the laptop (host PC and 2nd PC can access the internet still).

I went through all the steps to map network drives and fileshare at least 30 times ... nothing has worked.

I think the problem first needs to be solved on the laptop in regards to the internet connection. Since it cant access the internet, Im guessing it cant access the network either. The weird thing is ... when I open Network Connections through the laptop it shows "Local Area Connection" as "ENABLED". How the frig can it be both enabled and not working?? For the *censored* of it I double checked the settings for the laptop and the 2nd PC and they're identical, but one works and the other doesn't.

So I have NO idea what to do next. Some setting is off somewhere I can't find it.

PS: Yeah, everything is plugged in fine.http://www.wown.com/articles_tutorials/wxplnfrw.htmlIf you are using XP Firewall, download a decent one on one of the machines (like Zone Alarm or Sygate, they're free and they work better than XP's 'native' firewall), preferably one that has a CD burner so you can also put it on the laptop.

Then make a NetSetup disk or run NetSetup from an XP disk on all your machines. Quote

can you define "work better than XP's native firewall"?
I mean do you mean that by connection speed, security or what?helpless newbie.....Firewalls......the firewall built into XP will work ...but there are others with more features .....such as Zone Alarm ( free version )
http://download.com.com/3000-2092-10039884.html
You must have a firewall as part of your router , I would think .

DL65  thanks a lot dl65, I'm going to try in a very short time, meanwhile, i still hope you can describe how good it is as you know, I'm kind of person who likes to think over and over before installing any new software. Imagine, i took about half and hour to think before downloading a video codec, and 15 minutes to think before download yahoo! messenger's update!! ridiculous huh? ^^

But this is what kind of person i am, so i will appreciate very much if you could analyze to me, what will happen to my Internet connection speed, security levels, computer performance and system stability after I replace my firewall with this one you recommend, such as ppl used to give "reviews" on some products...

Thanks & regards.Zone Alarm's quite a good firewall.

It's stable, very user-friendly and it comes with a tutorial when you install it. (I donot know if this applies to the trial version, I run 4.5 and it's registered.)

It will most definitely increase your Internet security IF you pay attention to what you do. But that applies to most security programs.

I've used it for quite some time now. I must say that I'm contempt with it. I'd like to see some more functions, but nothing you should WORRY about if this is your first firewall..

Solve : "actulice" popup on desktop?

Answer»

little box with actulice, click on x get little box with "no modF", click on x get little box wi "funk"     That is probably a piece of ADWARE or a spybot or some other MALICIOUS or semi-malicious software that is running on your computer.

Have you installed new software recently? If so, which?

Regards,

FolkLore
Download SpyBotS&D (www.safer-networking.org) and AdAware (www.lavasoft.sv, I think. Swedish company) and make sure you have a decent virus killer (www.grisoft.com). USE the above to evict virus/malware infections and spyware/adware.I've done some research, and saw many people having this exact same problem. They define it as some sort of adware. Here is some solution I found on the web at:

www.computing.net

1) Go to "start"
2) Click "run"
3) Type in "msconfig"
4) Click "OK"
5) Click on "STARTUP" tab
6) FIND "pg4ds32m" in the list
7) Uncheck its box
Restart your computer

Solve : Wakeup problem?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new here, but really get upset with my newly-formatted pc. Below are my current hardware SPECS,

Pentium 4 2.0Ghz
Win Xp professional
TNT 2 32Mb AGP 2x
512Mb SDram
"networked"
20GB old hard disk

my problem is, when i leave it for after sometime, it'll turn off the monitor and never turn on again!

It might go into sleep mode or something, but the thing is, the led act like normal as if it's working. i tried to move the mouse, touched the keyboard everything, the desktop just won't appear...

thanks...Is it just your monitor or your entire PC?

Make sure that your video properties in the screensaver tab aren't set to shut off the monitor or HDs, and that the POWER management category is 'Desktop' or 'Always On'. When NEXT you restart, go into your BIOS and DISABLE any Power Management shutoffs and wakes. Experiment with enabling or disabling the APM and ACPI support in BIOS if the settings exist.

Sleep and standby generally only really work RIGHT on laptops. AC-powered PCs generally don't need these features. Quote

Is it just your monitor or your entire PC?

It's my monitor, I'm pretty sure that the whole pc and OS is still working in the background, just like some normal pc turned on without a monitor.

Solve : MS Office Problem / Corrupt File??

Answer»

Help! MICROSOFT Word will not start up. I get the message, "Not enough memory to open MS Word." All other programs function normally, including EXCEL, etc.  The problem is limited to MS Word.  Uninstall/Reinstall has no effect. "Repair Office" has no effect. Pentium 4, 2.4Ghz; 512 meg RAM. Can you help?http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;319299 or try this>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=288805Further research has led me to a solution for my own problem.

The corrupt file was a WORD Template CALLED "NORMAL".  Word searches for this file at STARTUP.

Renaming or deleting the NORMAL Template causes WORD to create a new one that is not corrupt, and WORD is working normally once again.

Solve : Port 80 = Blocked??

Answer»

I'm helping a friend out with an odd problem that he is having. First, he's on Windows XP Home.

The problem is not just specific to Internet Explorer (version 6 is what he has), but that's where it's most obvious. When he first reboots the computer and comes on, it's fine. He connects and is going extremely fast (cable modem). After about 5-10 minutes, it won't surf though. It's LIKE port 80 is just blocked...We can ping websites just fine. I can connect him through a proxy, just not a proxy on port 80..proxies on port 81, 8080, and 3128 I have tried, and they all work. I've tried connecting AIM through port 80, it won't work. But AIM connects through port 8080 and 81, as we did those as a test.

I went into network connections, properties for tcp/ip, and there is no filtering for blocking ports. The modem itself is not blocking the ports, as we have switched out the modems and that did not help..and the modem WORKS at my house not his, it has to be the computer.

There is no router, no firewall, no anti virus..he does have these things but we shut them all out.

There has to be some way to make internet explorer AUTOMATICALLY use port 8080? Because the only way proxies work is because our computer requests information to the proxy on port 8080, then the proxy requests the information port 80 and sends it to us from port 8080..our computer cannot directly go to the 80.

Even when i try to telnet to a website on port 80, won't connect..

We've installed opera, and netscape, same problems..they have sense been uninstalled.

Using a proxy isn't a huge deal, except for the fact that they extremely slow down the connection and block sites some times, and are not always up.

Does anyone have any suggestions? i've suggested we re-do the computer, but my friend has a band and a bunch of *censored* he is scared to format and possibly LOSE. If all else fails we will begin backing up information and reformat, but we want to be sure to exhaust all of our options first.

Thanks for any help you can lend us.http://support.wayne.edu/allwsu/proxyserver/explorer_win.php

Solve : getting xp to boot from cd copy?

Answer»

I recently put together components from two computers, trying to make a bigger and better computer using two IDE hard drives and a SCSI.  I tried copying XP from the smaller IDE hard drive to one of the bigger ones, since you can only have two IDE drives on a ribbon, and everything seemed to work fine.  When I removed the smaller IDE, and replaced it with a formatted larger one, I started recieving error messages, and was never able to resume windows.  I tried formatting all hard drives to start from scratch, and then reloading XP, but now when I try to start, I get the message: NTLDR is missing.  The only windows disc I have is a copy of the original XP disc, which apparently doesn't contain the booting programs.  My sister found the NTLDR FILE on the internet, which I put on a floppy and tried booting with, but this didn't work.  What can I do, or do I need to format the drives and get an original copy of windows to boot from? Thank you for any help you can give me.Have you changed your BIOS to boot off the CDrom FIRST?or try this >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q310994As I had ALREADY changed the dos to boot from the cd-rom with no luck, I downloaded the startup from the internet onto a cd-rom, as I did not have a floppy LARGE enough to fit the startup, and it said it could not find the boot record, then went on to say NTLDR is missing.  Will using the original Windows XP cd allow me to resolve this problem and get into windows?  Thank you for your help.try the repair OPTION>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315341&Product=winxp

Solve : Video Card probs?

Answer»

Alright, well I have an ati radeon 8500le (128) in my computer. I have had it for about 2 years with no problems at all. Recently my computer's motherboard, processor, and ram somehow got fried. I took it to a pc repair shop and the guy replaced everything but gave me the BAG with all the old parts in it. He put in a cheap geforce2mx because he said my video card was fried. I refused to believe this and tried the video card on a seperate pc. It seemed to work perfectly, but when i put it in my pc I saw lines running down the screen and a GRAY box with lines running through it around the mouse. Before I gave up i decided to download the ati unistall program and uninstall every ati program from my hard drive. I then reinstalled the original driver from off of the disk that CAME with the video card. Boom it worked. I then updated the driver and the problem came back. I rolled back the driver and decided to stick with the older driver. One problem, its not compatible with windows xp. After about an hour or two on the computer it locks up and when i restart it says it was caused by the display driver. Is it possible that the newer drivers are not compatible with my motherboard? This really sucks SOMEONE please help me.To be honest you are probably better off with a Geforce 2 MX,   i expect the performance is similiar if not higher then the radeon and the drivers are alot less hassle. Mabey some obscure ATI driver for a few releases back might work but it may take some TIME to find it.
good luck.

Solve : I cant make sence out of this graph?

Answer»

I found this on a site,

Look at the table. One bit counts to two numbers, two bits count to four numbers, three bits to eight numbers, four bits to 16 numbers, five to 21, six to 64, seven to 128 and finally, one byte (8 bits) counts to 256 numbers.

Decimal Binary Representation
0 0
1 1
2 10
3 11
4 100
5 101
6 110
7 111
8 1000
9 1001
10 1010
11 1011
12 1100
13 1101
14 1110
15 1111

To me it seems like what the info on top is saying is conflicting with its gragh, on top it SAYS 2 bits represents 4 numbers which makes sence but the graph says 2 bits it can represents 10 numbers.

Is it that this graph is bad or I am not getting what it means?

thanks
more info here>http://music.northwestern.edu/links/projects/midi/pages/undstdbh.htmlSorry.. I don't see the problem.
1 b can count up to (not including) 2
2 b can count up to (not including) 4
3 b can count up to (not including) 8
etc

don't forget to include 0 as a valid number.

You rarely go singly though.. it goes 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 and on.  Can you give us a link to the site to see it first hand?Heres the link http://computer.howstuffworks.com/bytes2.htm
this is not the only site that mentions this too.

Sorry but I don't uderstand what they are saying in the link, mostly once I get to the part where it menctions the 0 - 4, there is no 4 in the binary language of 1  and 0.

Im mostly confused on what makes the decimal 10 , 1010 or the decimal 11, 1011. Could the decimal 10 also be 1011?

also whats the b in your post joleen?Sorry.. since we were talking about bits I thought I'd use b instead.  b = bit.

Quote

Could the decimal 10 also be 1011?

No.  1011 = 11(XI)

Think of the 1 as being ON and the 0 as being OFF.  Do your table on graph paper.  Each column can either be ON or OFF.  Once a column on the far right has gone ON, for the next number column 2 becomes ON and column 1 goes OFF.
The first column is BASE 10 (decimal), the second is binary.
0 = 000   all OFF
1 = 001   OFF OFF ON
2 = 010   OFF ON OFF (the previous was ON so it turns OFF)
3 = 011   OFF ON ON  (col 3 turns on)
4 = 0100  OFF ON OFF OFF (keep going)
5 = 0101
6 = 0110
7 = 0111
8 = 01000
9 = 01001
10= 01010
11= 01011

Just remember, there are 10 kinds of people in the world.  Those that understand binary and those that don't.   Quote

Technically speaking, that is incorrect. The author of that INFORMATION was a very lazy & abbreviated route of explaining that.

It's more COMMONLY shown (when using binary numbers) in groups of 4 digits. So just as they have shown 8 & 9 below, they should have shown it like thus:

Can an expert examining hard drive tell if a downloaded program was actually used or applied?

This of course all depends on the program. But usually when a program is installed or run it will install new files and DIRECTORIES to the computer as well as make changes. SOMEONE knowing what they are looking for could easily notice these changes.

Quote
If a popup comes up, you click on it, can it automatically download a program without the user knowing it?

No. However, if you RECEIVE an Active X Windows warning Popup (not the standard browser popup window) then it could install a program.

Quote
If an expert examines your hard DRIVER, is it possible to tell which were popups and which were actual websites you visited and spent TIME on?

Again depends on the site. But when a page is downloaded the popup source code is also downloaded examining this code someone could identify between a popup and a visited page.

Is it possible for someone examining your hard drive to add and/or detele information on that hard drive, even changing dates and times?

Yes that is all completely possible.

So....here is my delema yall, I need an e commerce page w/pay PAL & gallery for my new business, so....I went with the freehostia.com Water Circle package for $46 to get my domain name and a bunch of hosted or sub domains/emails.....and 1>  had them pre-install Word Press as my Admin = I crammed for days learning tech termanology and studying how to do it myself = cheap as I could.  Got 1 up and running with a WPress Construction site page up = live in only a few days.
2>They/we use a Hepsia CPanel and the tech has yet to answer my question ticket.
3> FTP route to link the WP Admin w/ CPanel dosen't work either.
4> Tried to make a Sql database to do a page = no go, so I deleted it.
5> :'(The Cpanel gateways to WP Admin site no longer connects with WP sites in any direction, nor does my seperate links to WP through Chrome or Internet Explorer go there.  All my/their links to the WPAdmin and my sites are broken.  Get a error 404 or "error establishing a database connection" "The requested URL was not found on this server additonally a 404 , not found error port 80" = my page no longer up.
Not on the subdomain or registed domain addresses.  Hepsia w/no T. VIDEOS tells us to use Front Page =  outdated into non existance....

Things were fine with the live under construction page UNTILLLLl.....I tried to create a new hosted domain.  didn't work so I made a subdomain And then installed a wp template from the C Panel installer=Elephante.
6> Now my A is the same for the Registerd domain address and the subdomain address...HELP!
7>ON the registered domain page on the CPanel it is calling my registered domain a hosted domain now.  There is still a www adress from the freehostia server showing as a shared domain which I have not used or changed.  I don't know which direction to go forward in.  to get unstuck.

Local disk G: is part of your second internal hard drive.

Why were you not using the second one? Why bother having it if you're not using it?

by what mechanism?

This started when you were trying to make a flash drive work, so it's hard to tell what you did exactly to create that new partition. If you would like to use the ENTIRE 931GB of that second drive instead of just the 125GB of it you have now, you can just right click it there in disk management and select extend volume. If you want to get rid of the the new 125GB drive and go back to not using the second internal hard drive, you can right click it and delete that new volume.

I just ran a report on a WEBSITE and they pretty much had all my information for anyone and everyone to see.  Is there a way to get that stuff taken off?  I googled digital footprints but didn't really find any helpful stuff.  Seemed like a lot of the links I clicked on were talking about Metadata that is stored on my hard drive but not stuff like my phone numbers, addresses, family, etc.  I would really like those things to be deleted but I have a feeling that's probably not going to happenWhat is the threat? Social Engineering

While I do not like the service that websites like hxxp://peekyou.com offer, the website is however a sobering reminder about how much information individuals put out to the world by joining social websites and using the Internet for any type of MEMBERSHIP based activity (email, Facebook, eBay, computer HELP forums etc,).
Anyone who thinks they are anonymous on the web these days are kidding themselves...
The public Internet by design was not meant to be private.

Even using software that "blocks" users from being tracked is misleading. Everything is logged by some server, somewhere. You can't get around that.Couldn't have said it better myself...i never said i thought i was anonymous.  i was just wondering if anyone had any tricks to at least minimize the amount of personal information that is available on the web.  apparently not Quote from: brianb22

Almost impossible. Once you click OK, Send, Enter or whatever the information that went live is almost immediately cached by Google, Bing, Yahoo etc...

Solve : A Head Scratcher?

Answer»

Hello:
I have been fixing up a computer that runs poorly and was just about to give up when I found multiple file entries in System 32. It has 4 wininet.dll, 4 urlmon.dll, 3 shlwapi.dll, 2 url.dll just to name a few. No wonder it has a hard time executing a command! I have done searches on this and only found one case that was slightly similar so I am hoping the great minds here can help answer my questions .
I would love to know why this happened but that's just out of curiosity. The more important question is " How do I know which ones to delete?".  Some are the same size and date and some aren't. Some are compressed and some aren't. Do I just get rid of all of them and WRITE a clean copy from the XP CD?  Are they going to let me delete them at all?
Any advice would be appreciated! It is impossible for two files with the same name to exist in the same directory.

However a common tactic used by malware is to USE letters that look the same in the standard windows dialog font.

for example, a lower-case L and a uppercase i look the same in the default windows fonts for most systems. So some of them could have "tweaked" names. You can check this by changing the system font in appearance.

Also, if these files are simply under system32 but in different folders, then that is normal. Windows keeps a copy of many of those files in dllcache in case somebody accidentally deletes the originals, and often backups are made by windows update in other folders, too.
Hey BC!
Sorry, I should have explained myself better. It is, for example, urlmon.dll, urlmon(2).dll, urlmon(3).dll and so on and they are all in System32. I have looked at the properties on each and they have the same details. When I say some are different sizes I mean that for instance, if there is 4 entries, 2 of them are the same as each other and the other 2 are a larger size but also the same as each other. I wondered if the smaller ones could be from previous service packs and the larger ones the updated versions that didn't install properly which still doesn't explain why there are copies of each. It's just weird! BTW, the Microsoft updater won't work properly either. It keeps asking me to install the same security update even though it says that it has been successfully installed.
I moved all of the documents to a disc and then removed every program that could be reinstalled, cleaned the startup and autoruns before running almost every free malware scan known to man so I am fairly sure I have gotten every worm, trojan and rootkit I can get.
I was going to remove the compressed entries using the logic that if they were compressed they must not be being used but then I wondered if they could be the good files and the used ones were infected clones. Then I thought that was unlikely since they were the same size. Then I got a painkiller for my headache and started this thread!
I suppose I should make a list of the files and their sizes and check it against a couple of other XP's to see what should be there. ( I am getting really sick of moving mouse, keyboard and monitor cables!!!!) delete the ones with numbers in brackets. They are accidental copies, possibly by an accidental drag or a copy paste or something. They aren't used by anything, by the way- (programs using the functionality in a dll import from say, urlmon.dll, not from urlmon(1).dll). Of course there is a bad side to this, since it means that haven't tracked down why the machine behaves strangely just yet! Thanks Wizkid! (How come your listed as a beginner?) I don't too much that it won't solve the problem because I learn through the journey! I wonder where I should look now?  "How come your listed as a beginner?"As you come to "know" our esteemed member BC through your longer exposure to his postings on the CH forums you will come to realize (and hopefully enjoy) his often extensive repartee when addressing posts. He often will inflict his wry sense of "humour" as part of his replies. While i am sure his pronounced modesty will prevent him from personally responding to your quoted query i hope he will concur with my interpretation of the existence of the description "beginner". He is actually by any definition way above that. truenorth Quote from: truenorth on March 22, 2012, 07:44:56 AM

Thanks

Actually, the reason my experience is SET to beginner is because the forum software was updated and it reset some profile settings, and I didn't feel it was necessary to change it. After all, that option really only says how much the person thinks they know, not how much they actually do. And in many sense I think everyone can be a beginner at something. A person great with MS word will likely be lost in Visual Studio; somebody good with photoshop might be a beginner using PowerPoint, and vice versa. I'm not an expert or even experienced or familiar with everything computer related, so I think it fits to go with the lowest common denominator. Better to have people telling you you have it set to low rather than that it is too high . I can understand if you don't want to be bothered changing it since you have so many better things to spend your time on and it would appear that it is better than a coffee table book for starting conversations but after all the hours ( thousands?, millions?) you have spent at the keyboard I think it would be safe to say you are "familiar". It is really more of a fact than a brag.  BC is by far the best Beginner we have here...

You're in good hands...I didn't doubt it for a moment!

So, I deleted those DUPLICATES and figured I was done with that now the Explorer Search just keeps looping around and finding the same entries over and over! Splane that one Lucy!
Annnd....I did an Internet Search on the entries "Zonedon" and "Zonedoff" and it appears they may be Malware but Avast says they are clean. Is there any other explanation for them? Sounds like you should meander on over to the experts at the "virus and spyware" forum and introduce yourself there and make mention of your last post. I offer this as the basis for that recommendation.
http://security.pc-fault.com/security/51263.html
I CANNOT attest to the credibility of this site and it's statement but i would want to determine the credibility the statement that is being made there.truenorth
. Thanks for the link Truenorth. I already spent a couple of weeks on this matter with SuperDave and found nothing to explain the weird behaviour. I have run more scans since then and have found a couple more things including a rootkit but it is still messed up. I wanted to do a clean install but the CD just won't run even though I can view, copy and paste from it. I used the CD to do a repair install a couple of month ago so I know it works. Another weird thing is that if I run sfc /scannow it takes its time and the CD ROM makes noise every now and then and the progress indcator runs to the end before it shuts off but if I run sfc without the CD it keeps saying that required dll's are missing.
I would say it is driving me crazy but my friend keeps telling me it is less like a drive and more like a short putt!

Solve : Computer slows down, audio jams and RAM usage increases after continuos use?

Answer»

Hi,
this has started happening over the past couple of months, at first it TOOK around 2-3 days to become unbearable without restarting
now it takes about a day. just like the title says, computer starts slowing down (cursor gets STUCK here and there while moving it),
while listening to any audio/video files the sounds jams (not sure how to explain it, every second or so it gets stuck on the same voice note)
and i noticed that my ram usage (task manager->PHYSICAL memory) increases from give or take 20% to 50%
i looked up ram usage increases in google and it mentioned a memory leak from an open process, tried LOOKING for one that is suspicious with no luck
tried installing and running an ad-aware scan which did not help

here are my specs:
os: windows 7 sp1
ram: 8GB DDR3 1333MHz
cpu: i7 860 2.8ghz
gpu: evga gtx 560 ti geforce
hd: 2.5 TB of hard drive space, around 2 of it is free
av: avg internet security business edition 2012

please let me know if you need anything elseSure sounds like some process is using an inordinate amount of computer resources. Have you tried disabling all but the most essential of your programs that are part of your start menu to see if that changes anything? Don't remove them just disable them as you will reintroduce them one at a time to try and identify which one(s) are causing the issue. The computer you describe has a lot of performance so hardware should not be an issue. How old is the computer? Can you think back to anything that was being done on the computer when this 1st started? Confirm that you have only ONE virus scan program running at a time. truenorthdisabling programs from start menu lowered the ram usage by around 5%, i am only using AVG here
yesterday it had reached around 90% ram usage after about a week of beeing on continuosly before it crashed and needed restarting

Solve : Backing Up Windows Vista on Seagate Drive?

Answer»

Had a QUESTION.  I routinely back up my Windows Vista PC on my Seagate Harddrive.
Thing is, more and more space is consumed so I have very little left.

The folder hosues every single back-up I have done.
WANTED to KNOW if I have to keep all the back-ups, or if I can delete them and just keep the most recent.
I am starting to get very low on memory.

Note:  Tonight I deleted them all; am currently backing up everything and it is taking forever! Some general recommendations.
Make progressive backups. Backups that  reflect the differences.
Keep the first backup you make of the system on a DVD or blew-ray. That is you panic mode backup.
After that, concentrate on backups of your PERSONAL stuff that can not be recovered. You can always install the OS and programs from the original CDs. Or download them again from  the Internet. Consider getting a large cheap drive. the older PATA 500 GB drives and now pretty low cost.
True, some external drives are not as good as you want then to be. But for backup they do the job.
Example:
Western Digital My Book Essential 500 GB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive  $70 at Amazon.

1)  So....keep the 1st backup....but every backup afterwards can be deleted....just delete them BEFORE making the next bakcup?

Example....did 2 backups....call them 1 and 2.
Delete 2...keep 1....then do 3?

2) Why is it each time I backup I lose more and more space?

3) Is there anyway I can do a snapshot...so that if there ever is a problem...I can restore it to how it was before?
-For some reason I have a "media ID bin" (is that it) but it was last done in November and I do not know how to re-do it.No exactly. It goes like this:
Make a full backup of you system.
Do a full backup of My documents.
Every day make an Incremental Backup of My documents.
Every week do an Incremental Backup of the System.

This works better if My Documents is on another volume.

Here is a basic crash-course on incremental backup.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incremental_backup

Some products already have this built-in.

This company has free software that may suit your needs. Anyway, just reading the documentation is worth your time.
http://www.easeus.com/download.htm

Does that help any?I'm confused.

I thought this was easy, just get a backup drive, and backup...now you're talking incremential, daily, weekly?

I got another question, my Back up disc folder claims in the "My PC" folder, I have only 8.49 of MB stored.
In this folder, it contains:

-backup set which contains:
   backup 2-4-2012
   backup 2-23-2012
   backup 3-17-2012
(all of these claim folder is empty)

then another sub-folder called "catalogs"
   "Globalcatalog.wbcat" (3-17-2012) at 8.49 MB

So what does this mean?  Do I need to keep 2-4 and 2-23?  Is my PC in fact backed up fully and I can restore from here?I think we need more details from you.  What software are you using for backups?  Exactly what is your procedure?  What choices/options (full, incremental, differential) are you choosing when you do backups? Quote from: bluecountry on February 04, 2012, 12:00:32 AM

What software are you using to make back-ups? Here is what I do.

1) Go to windows vista...control panel...click back-up computer
2) It finds the Seagate drive (G) and backs up.

Now...when I open my Seagate drive:
1) It has a folder called "Johnny's PC" (The name I have for my PC)
2) I double click the icon and see one folder labeled "Backup Set 2012-02-04 000750"
3) I double click this folder's icon and it shows me four separate folders inside:

       1) Catalogs: 8.49 MB...GlobalCatalog.wbcat (3-17-2012)

        2) Backup Files 2012-02-04-000750
-When I first click it says "Folder is empty" so then I double click the folder icon and it states "You currently do not have         permission to access the folder, click continue to access" which I do, and I now see 179 zip files which have between 150,000-200,000 KB of data per folder.
-When I now exit the folder, and go back outside, when I highlight the 02-04 folder it states I have 32 GB instead of being empty.

      3) Backup Files 2012-02-23 233853 ....same thing....says empty...gain permission..find 5 zip files...exit and now it says folders has 547 MB and is not empty

      4) Backup Files 2012-03-17 145108.....same thing...says empty...gain permission...find 29 zip files...exit...and now it says the folder has 4.73 GB and is not empty

So my, since each time I back-up I lose more and more space (and now have only 6 GB of 80 free)....umm what is going on.  Do I really need all of these old folders or just the first one (02-04) and the last one (03-17) before I back-up for this week (03-31).

Thanks.

homework?No... Its not homework, as a beginner, I would like to know at least how to solve 5 of the frequent problems in each category, so that if ever someone asks me I would be very much aware about it Well, I don't mean to be rude but may I suggest that if you are indeed a beginner you don't try to fix anyone's systems at all. Some problems may have relatively easy fixes (or seem to) and others may be complicated. But either way, if you don't completely understand both the cause and the cure you could end up creating more problems than you started with. I suggest you hang around and read the forums. This is a good place to watch and learn :

Speaking as someone who is not a beginner, but by no means an expert, you could write volumes of books on each category.

You could attempt to find questions on this forum, that you do not know the answer to and research it.

Pick a topic and read a book on it. There will always be TROUBLESHOOTING techniques relating to most subjects.

Also, as i've done plenty of college work in the past. Your original QUESTION is written in the same vein as homework questions. Usually, they are quite easy to spot............Its okay,  I dont intend of trying it while my state is still like this. I just want to know those kinds of problems for myself too. I agree with Allan that just hanging out here you will pick up alot of general PC knowledge...and feel free to ask if something doesn't make sense... Quote from: patio on March 22, 2012, 08:05:07 AM

In my own opinion and from searching around on Google
Hardware:
  • Hard drive failure
  • Overheating due to failing fans or thermal compound incorrectly applied
  • Faulty power supply
  • Cables and connections not seated properly, motherboard standoffs not in place
  • Problems with expansion cards
Software:
  • Backup of user data
  • Viruses and malware and incorrectly config'ed firewall
  • Try not to have too many unnecessary programs installed
  • Clear your temp and cache files
  • Defragment your hard drive frequently

Solve : Question on how to send an .exe file in an email?

Answer»

I have a few applications in my archives that I like to send out to friends every once in a while. I've had most of them for many years and they are 'clean'.

My problem is that I FIND that I can no longer send them in an email as most email programs will not allow .exe files anymore for obvious security reasons. That being said is there anyway I can re-package the application in some way so that I can get it to my friends using email?

Yes. Did you try making it a ZIP file?Yes, I changed it to a .zip file. No luck... the email programs knew there was a .exe inside.    Why are you sending someone an .exe ? ?
Have you heard of file hosting services ? ?Upload -> http://www.mediafire.com/
Then link to the file in the email. Thanks kpac.    Quote from: earlk on March 24, 2010, 01:27:02 PM

My problem is that I find that I can no longer send them in an email as most email programs will not allow .exe files anymore for obvious security reasons.

Just wondering, are you using Windows Live Mail, or what?I was using Thunderbird, but I have SINCE moved to Webmail only. The only account (gmail, hotmail, yahoo, Thunderbird) that would send, etc. was Yahoo. All the rest wouldn't deal with the .exe ATTACHMENT. All of my recipients couldn't receive the email with the attachment from Yahoo. It seems the .exe is a no-no these days in email.

As a test, I sent a zipped .exe via my primary email account with my ISP, using Windows Mail on my Vista laptop, and sent to my Yahoo! Mail account and my gmail account.  gmail rejected it.  Yahoo! accepted it and let me forward it BACK to my ISP account.

So, yeah, this is somewhat of a hit or miss situation.  I'd use kpac's solution; it seems the safest bet in this case.Yes, I've just tried it out and it works well. (first time I've ever used a file sharing SITE)

Solve : How I got headphones working in Ubuntu.?

Answer»

Here's how I got the HEADPHONES working properly in Ubuntu 9.10 KARMIC Koala. My computer is a HP Pavilion DV6 1128-TX Notebook.

The problem was that whenever I plugged my earphones into the headphone jack while RUNNING Ubuntu, the internal speaker sound wouldn't mute, meaning that I had both speaker/earphone output.

So after re-installing Ubuntu, compiling the latest ALSA version, updating the system, getting needlessly angry at my laptop, I finally found out a work-around.

There is an application that you can use which controls the sound levels called alsamixer.

All you have to do is turn down (NOT mute!) the 'Speaker' channel to zero and turn up the 'Front' channel.

The only caveat here is that you cannot use GNOME's volume control to turn up/down the sound, otherwise you have to do this again. Instead you can use alsamixer to control the main volume.

I'm not sure if this will help ANYONE, but this is what worked for me.Apparently, this depends on the hardware in a particular system.  I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed on an HP Compaq d530 CMT tower PC and have not had the problem you experienced.  If I plug in headphones, the speakers automatically cutoff, and vice versa.

But, THANKS for posting that info.  It may be helpful some Ubuntu users. Actually, now that I do remember using it on my now dead Compaq laptop (Yes I still have it), the speakers would mute normally.

So I guess it does have something to do with the hardware.

All the bad COMMENTS on WOT have vanished and even some of the people who posted negative ones are now posting positive ones!

Yeah I made changes and calmed down, all good to those who are HUMBLE.  I forgot to mention that WOT themselves got INVOLVED in the end. They backed me up after my changes so I think those reds may have been changed by the OWNERS after personal opinions were re-evaluated.

Very nice people at WOT.

Solve : Microsoft Excell 2010?

Answer»

In one cell I want to enter a material description (ex: D2, A2, DC53, etc..). In another cell I want to enter the weight of the material. In yet another cell I want to have that cell recognize the material description entered and calculate the weight by COST per pound. The cost per pound of material is different per material (ex: [email protected]/lb, [email protected]/lb.). I am UNABLE to get it to recognize the different materials.

Thank you,

DannyCan you post the FORMULA you tried using to calculate the cost (weight X unit cost)?  Also, can you describe the spreadsheet layout in more detail?  For example, column A is material description, column B is weight, column C is unit cost, etc. The format of your spreadsheet normally determines if your formula works. What you are wanting is pretty simple, but its like Soybean said, material in col A, etc

The formula's in 2010 should be the same as in the PREVIOUS versions of Excel so a simple formula like =weight*unit cost (eg. =B2*C2 )  should work.

Always amazes me when I see this type of situation.  How can TECHNICAL help be so careless as to not inquire about what valuable files the owner might want saved?  And, as long as the hard drive is operable, they should absolutely know enough to be able to save those files. If they can't do that, they have no business working on other people's computers. Quote from: soybean on November 18, 2010, 12:51:23 PM

I believe putting links like that in the sig. block is DEEMED OK in the forum; at least, that's what I recall being stated as general policy somewhere. Quote from: soybean on November 18, 2010, 01:52:17 PM

Solve : What is the best Software??

Answer»

I am buying a new computer and want to know if I should have Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, MAC Software Snow Leopard, Linux? I have no clue. Could someone please help me. Which is the best, and FASTEST.Any new computer, unless you mean buying separate components and assembling a system yourself, will have Windows 7 installed.  Or, of course, if you buy Apple Mac system, it will come with the Mac OS.

Re: Windows, I'd definitely accept the Windows 7 that would be installed on the new system. Why go back to Vista or XP?  Windows 7 has some nice new features and it performs well, assuming you have appropriate hardware to support it. Even if you have some software you have been using with XP and it will not work with Windows 7, you could use the XP Mode feature of Windows 7 to run that software.

Since Linux is free, you could always install it in a dual-boot configuration (meaning you would have both Windows and Linux installed on the same computer).  There is no best, there is no fastest. It's WHATEVER makes you happyI would recommend that you avoid vista, I have run into some issues with opening apps that require admin authorization that lock up other programs. I really like XP and to my understanding 7 is a beefed up XP, so if you can I would suggest going with 7 if you are planning on making a windows box. Otherwise mac has a solid OS.

Or... If you feel like learning something new you can always load one of the various flavors of Linux, cool thing about it is that it is all open source so you can have all the programs you want for free. Quote from: Cifa on November 14, 2010, 12:31:22 PM

two things: There is nothing wrong with Vista.  People who have problems with Vista are clearly apophenic. Additionally, regarding versions:

2K: Version 5.0
XP: Version 5.1
Vista: Version 6.0
Windows 7: Version 6.1

Windows XP is a enhanced version of 2K; Windows 7 is an enhanced version of Vista. Either way, Vista itself is just a modification to the same codebase as XP, just as XP was a modification to the codebase for 2000 and 2000 was an enhancement to NT4 before that, and that to 3.51 before it, and so on.

The problem here not that some yahoo is spreading rumours that "windows 7 is based on XP" which is only true to the pedant, but also that people are gobbling it up without question.

Quote

Depends who you ask. If you ask me, they had a solid OS with Mac Classic; sure, some of the memory management was arcane, and programming it could be a huge PITA, but the point was that it was quite literally designed with usability in mind. Windows, and to a far greater extend linux desktop environments, sort of had their UI paradigms congealed, rather than designed.

Quote

Open Source is not about free software. In fact, Open Source and Free software are wholly unrelated; there are programs that are open source that aren't free as much as there are free programs that aren't open source. My point is that using the term "Open Source" as if it is somehow better then "free" is only true when you actually plan on working with said free source. otherwise it's just an extra WORD on top of free.

As far as non-programmers are concerned, it shouldn't matter wether a program is open source or not. Once a house is BUILT, the blueprints are meaningless and uninteresting to anybody who isn't a draftsman.
Yes, there is nothing about the best, or the fastest, only the most suitable according to your OS. Because some programs don't do well with some OS.

Solve : please help-hover question?

Answer»

When i hover over something to read more details about something, a box will pop up with additional information, for example, on the forums on this website when you hover over a subject more information will pop up with more details such as the question that was asked. that is just one example. i like how it does that but the problem i cant seem to FIGURE out is how do I make it STAY up longer until after I am done reading it/?? i can't seem to find an answer to what seems like a common question. it appears for like a second and i have to keep putting hovering over it to BRING it back up and try to read super fast speed and figure out where i left off then it dissapears again. please does anyone know how i make that text box stay up??? i am so frustrated, thank you. In the case of how I've done the hover boxes on the forums messages, as LONG as you don't move your mouse the hover box should stay open. It's up to the web developer to decide how long a hover box stays open and the action it takes. However, in almost all situations as long as you don't move your mouse the hover box should remain open.

In the case of the hover box that is shown when you move your mouse over the "specs" link (in the profile to the left), that box will remain open until you hover over the close link in the top-right corner.

Hope that HELPS
