Solve : why caret symbol prints only after pressing another key?

Answer»

why caret symbol prints only after pressing another key
I dont have it over the "6" key.
I have a spanish keyboard, and the caret ^ is together with the "{" key.

The caret NEEDS the Alt-Gr key to be used.

But the ^ does not PRINT right away, I need to type something else, then the caret shows up.

Why is this?because it's not a caret, it's a circumflex, and is intended to go another character- for example, "Â".

In many cases the keyboard doesn't have a specific way to insert things like carets and grave accents with a single keypress; generally, the method used is to press the grave combination (as you are doing) and press space to make it appear. Quote

it's not a caret, it's a circumflex, and is intended to go <with> another character- for example, "Â".

Thus speaks an anglophone...

The symbol that you would call a caret in English that looks like a little roof, when used alone, is a character in its own right; the circonflexes or circumflexes that you see over certain characters in non-English alphabets are an integral part of those characters. Rather than having an extra key for each accented character, non-English keyboards are made with the scheme that miguel7808 has noticed, NAMELY that you signify an accent (acento circunflejo) by typing a "DEAD key" then type the unaccented character. To get a caret alone, the next character should be a space.

Incidentally, did you know that in Italian the caret is often used to signify that a number is ordinal, (as the st, nd and rd do in 1st 2ND 3rd in English) thus 1^ is used to signify 1st, and 2^ to signify 2nd, and so on. This is because the ASCII character set lacks the ordinal indicator, a superscripted little dash and a circle (-o) or a (-a) depending on whether the number's grammatical gender is masculine or feminine respectively.

Solve : October Poll: How many different passwords do you have??

Answer»

I use KeePass password manager to keep track of 160+ web LOG ins.
Very few user names and passwords are repeated so there are maybe 150. KeePass has a built-in password generator, so it’s easy to make new ones. I keep the database backed up. If I ever lose it I’m in big trouble. Now that's thinking safely Bromide. I think you're taking the award for having the most passwords. I don't think I've ever encountered someone with 150+ passwords.Doesn’t everyone accumulate login credentials over time? I’ve got several email accounts, 27 forums, 25 web sites that require user accounts plus all sorts of ONLINE vendors likes Amazon and NewEgg. They add up quickly.

I don’t know how anyone survives without a password manager app these days. Maybe I’m too paranoid.

LIKE you, I have accounts with well over a hundred websites requiring username and password. It runs the gamut (forums, vendors, financial, etc.).

If you read my first post in this thread, it explains how I use an Access database for passwords. But, I don't use nearly as many different passwords as you because I'm not using a software tool that generates passwords, as you are. For example, I use the same password on most forums.

Bromide, I think you're not being paranoid, you're just doing it better than most people. You're using perhaps the best method by using a software tool designed specifically for password security.Just noticed this, KIND of odd how the forum's results are different from the main page...

Solve : Nvidia 9500GT vs Nvidia GT240?

Answer»

Nvidia 9500GT runs on a 300W. PSU. That's the graphics card in my pc right now.

Although I'm not really needing new graphics card at the moment I'm just curious to look at it as people have said GT240 is better than 9500GT. HOWEVER, on official Nvidia.com site, it says GT240 needs minimum recommended 300W PSU while it consumes 69 W max

but the 9500GT consumes 50 W max and needs minimum recommended 350W PSU.

Is this an typographical error on NVIDA's website??? I thought you'd want higher watt psu for card of higher watt consumption (ASSUMING +12V rails already provide enough amps and you have a good brand)if you want graphic card with less POWER
you should try the green EDITION from Nvidia
personally i used Nvidia GTS 250 Green Edition
the performance still good and used less power from PSU

Solve : Is Heat The Only Solution!??

Answer»

I bought a Toshiba Satellite special edition a305 in the spring of 2009 from Best Buy. I was extremely happy with it for almost exactly one year. Then one day I went to turn the laptop on, and it simply did not respond. No flashing light telling me the battery NEEDED to be charged – nothing. I thought maybe it had gone completely dead- so I plugged it in. Usually when I would do this, a light would come on telling me that the laptop was charging. Nothing came on.

I brought my laptop in to the computer repair shop (that I actually worked at) the next day. They ran it through all of the basic tests. Hard drive, memory, battery, power supply, power brick, etc. Everything checked out in working condition. Thankfully, I had purchased the extended 3 yr. warranty from Best Buy along with the laptop when I bought it. I brought it into Best Buy and they ran all the same tests while I was there, with the same results. They told me that they needed to send it off to their office in Kentucky. I agreed- and it got sent away. 3-4 weeks later, it came back to my local Best Buy store. I was very anxious to see what the issue was. When the geek squad man was handing it over to me, he read off the notes that the KY office had made. He told me that they were “unable to duplicate the issue” and that the unit had powered on and off “100x” with no issues. He was puzzled b/c he was the agent who helped me check it in. We pushed the power button, and sure enough- it powered right up. I was very surprised- but way too happy to have my laptop back to complain or ask any further questions!

After that day, my laptop worked just fine. For approximately one month. Then, the same thing happened. There were no circumstances that would connect the first incident with the SECOND. I was using it for listening to music, surfing the internet- no gaming or any “stressful” applications or additions were made to the computer. It did not turn off in the middle of my using it. It was always after it had gone into sleep mode, or when it was shut down. The geek squad agent asked me many questions to try and figure out what had triggered the issue. We could come up with nothing, and the laptop was again sent to Kentucky.

Three weeks later, my laptop came back…with the same notes attached. “We were unable to duplicate the issue”. I couldn’t believe it! My laptop was again in perfect working condition. For approximately one month. I began to think that maybe it was an issue that had to do with monthly updates. I asked this question when I went back to the geek squad for the 3rd time. I had moved in the mean time, so I took it to my local Best Buy. I gave them the whole back story. They ran all the same tests…with- you guessed it – the same results. “Yeah- we will have to send this to our home office in Kentucky”. And so, my laptop made a 3rd trip. I bet you can guess what happened when I got it back. Yep. Same notes. They powered it on just fine- couldn’t find any problems. They even wrote down what my screen saver was so that I would know they weren’t just feeding me a line.

The new geek squad guy suggested that maybe it was the sleep mode that was causing the issue. He changed the settings so it would never sleep. I would just have to turn it off after I was done using it if I didn’t want it using electricity. This was a pain- but I gave it a try. This time, it lasted about a month and a half.
Here’s where my story gets weird. I put my laptop in my car in the morning on my way to work. - figuring I’d bring it in again after I was done for the day. It sat in the sun in the back of my car for 8 hours. When I brought it in to Best Buy at 5, it was pretty hot to the touch. When I brought it up to the counter and started filling out the paper work, the geek squad guy pushed the power button, and it turned on. I was shocked. Whenever my laptop would pull its usual not-turning-on-for-anything stunts, I would try and turn it on at least a dozen times just hoping that MAYBE it would magically work…and that had never worked. Now, here it was- working fine.

What changed? Nothing. Except for the fact that it sat in my hot car all day.

Now- I don’t know the exact number of times my laptop has shut off and not turned back on since that last time I brought it in- but trust me, its been a few. At least 4-5 times. When it happened again- I felt silly doing this- but I tried it anyway- I let it sit in my hot car for a few hours- and low and behold- it powered right on.

I’ve tried anything from letting it sit in my car- to putting it on a heat vent at home- to even putting it under my electric blanket. It makes NO SENSE. But I tell you- it works. Never fails.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY LAPTOP!??!?!?

Any helpful input would be much appreciated. Any questions – just email me.email address deleted by Allan

Thanks for taking time to read my plea.

Sincerely,

One Frustrated Toshiba Owner. There is nothing wrong with your laptop.

They are designed to work that way!I do not think that Geek-9pm is being serious - (it's hard to tell sometimes) - but he is definitely wrong. Such a post seems to me quite unhelpful. Lindsey, do you live in a cold place? By the way, posting your email address is not encouraged here.

Laptops that are not specially designed for cold conditions ("ruggedized" models are usually better in low temperatures) are going to be OK in normal temperatures - around 50 to 95 degrees F (10 - 35 degrees C). Is it getting below this range? Maybe you could keep it in a wooly jacket when it is not switched on or on standby. The batteries don't like very low temperatures, so are you having the problem on AC power? I believe Kentucky is in "Dixie", and quite warm? You have a 3 year warranty and in my opinion you should be thinking of preparing a detailed description of the problem for a claim.

1) Never post your email address on a public forum unless you're anxious to be inundated by spam
2) Forums don't work by responding to email addresses. All responses remain on the forum for the benefit of allWhat Salmon Trout sez is true. Including his remarks about my style.

There are some commercial interests that do not want your laptop to last much more than a year or two. There is a statistical study that shows consumer devices MAY fail a rate of about N%* per year. What they want is for that to not be a linear relationship.
I do not mean to say it is directly the manufactures. Others benefit by rapid failure rates. Some of this comes from the makers of small critical parts. The capacitors. The chips. The metal contacts. They deliberately use materials that will have an accelerated rate of failure after several months of use. This keeps the discrete component market in a state of flux. This is not to the best interests of the consumer.

The remedy?
Either learn to do your now repair work or buy with a good warranty.

* Where n is between 1 to 8. The actual numbers are kept secrect.
I agree with Salmon that you should seriously consider getting a warranty replacement. I think you got a lemon.

It's not as common as it used to be but during the manufacturing process if a solder joint is just slightly off it
can expand and contract, and cause intermittent problems kind of like you are describing.

And if you work at a computer shop, you know that's there's nothing harder to trouble shoot than an intermittent problem. Thanks for your reply Salmon Trout- I don't live in an extremely cold climate. The laptop has never been exposed to extremely cold temps. At Best Buy- and at the place I used to work- they tested the battery...and it checked out fine. Maybe something wouldn't show up even if it was wrong? I am wondering what I could do for a claim...I would like a replacement- but I have no way of proving whats happening to my laptop- since it decides to behave once it gets to KY.

Geek-9PM
"The remedy?
Either learn to do your now repair work or buy with a good warranty".

I did buy it with a good warranty. I know laptops aren't "designed" to last more than a year on average. This still doesn't help me. Your style reminds me of Nick Burns, your company's computer guy. "YOU'RE WELCOME".

One thing I didn't mention- maybe this could be related? I had to get a replacement power brick a while back- I probably had the laptop for a few months when the part of the power cord that plugs into the laptop became bent and no longer would charge the computer. I got a replacement straight from the factory- so I don't think they would have made a mistake...but I guess I don't want to rule anything out. It should also be noted that I didn't see any problems until after I had been using the replacement power brick for several months.

I just found this online...
"Cons: Toshiba Satellite A305 Motherboard problems stats after one year. The problem is not able to RESOLVE. we have to replace with new mother board which will cost around $100.

Summary: Toshiba Satellite A305 Motherboard crash in 1year 3 months. I was using only 2 to 3 hrs per day. I have to spend $400 to buy the motherboard. Instead i can spend $100 more and i will get a new laptop".

Anyone hear of anything like this?
Should I just save everything on my computer and drop it off a cliff? Send it in for a warranty claim? I'm ready. Quote from: lindseykaye on November 02, 2010, 03:15:35 PM

I know laptops aren't "designed" to last more than a year on average.
Eh, I'll have to see solid facts to believe that. I've had my Compaq laptop since July 2007 and it hasn't failed, or shown any signs of failure. And, I know other people who own laptops and I'm not aware of any that failed after only 1 year.

I know a guy who graduated from the Air Force Academy in May 2010. I used his government-issued Gateway laptop for all 4 years at the academy, toting it around from class to class and back to his dorm room. It took a real beating but was still running when he graduated. I still have a Toshiba Satellite 440CDX that still works. Battery died long ago but everything else is still fine. The laptop is 14 years old.

2. Can DOS save the files to the Windows computer in anyway?...
1. No. I assume you save to DOS6 computer hard drive & then COPY to floppy disk?
2. No. It is possible to network a DOS computer but it will require a large effort.
Must you open the files from the floppy on the WinXP machine? Can't you copy them over first?

Solve : question about MP3 files?

Answer»

My friend doesn't have a computer but loves music so I've been helping him find some rare tracks of various musicians that he likes online and then burning the songs to CD for him. PREVIOUSLY I never bothered to search out or download music online so I really don't know as much about it as kids PROBABLY do. The CDs I made are compiled of songs from a few different musicians on each disc and my friend then asked me how come each song seems to be a different volume so that he has to turn the volume of his stereo up and down for each of the different tracks while playing the discs. I hadn't encountered such a problem before so I don't know why the songs would be at different VOLUMES. Is volume variation normal for music files? Is there some way to get each file to have the same volume level?
Thanks What PROGRAM are you USING to burn the disks? Windows Media Player?I was using Nero8 and also some program that came with my computer (I can't remember the name at the moment and I'm on a different comp atm). He said his stereo won't play MP3s so he had me select the option to make CDs and then the program converted all the MP3s to .CDA files.http://www.ehow.com/how_6791814_normalize-nero-8.htmlThanks for the link!

Solve : Microsoft Office for churches and other charities?

I just found out that Microsoft has some really great software PRICING for charities. I just bought 5 copies of Microsoft Office 2010 Standard (volume LICENSING) from CDW for $56 each (minimum 5 licenses). If any of you are involved in a church or other charity, you might want to look into volume licensing instead of paying the full retail price of AROUND $400 DOLLARS for Office 2010 Pro.

Solve : Unlocked Internet = Free Internet??

Answer»

Just wondering if you agree with the title? Post your arguments for or against it.
Unlocked = Accessable, not free

An unlocked house does not mean its free, an unlocked car does not mean its free. It still belongs to somebody.

So, IMHO, if you use somebodies unlocked wireless internet this = stealing. You are not paying for it, it does not belong to you, therefore it's not yours to use.

If you want to test this theory, go to a bar, wait till a really big guy goes to the toilet, then take his drink. Theres nobody there, it's not 'locked' and when he comes back, you tell him it was free.I agree with reddevilggg. Leaching unsecured wifi is stealing. The law in many countries recognises this. In Britain, the The Communications Act 2003 says a "person who (a) dishonestly obtains an electronic communications service, and (b) does so with intent to avoid payment of a charge applicable to the provision of that service, is guilty of an offence". There are also suggestions using somebody else's wireless could come under the Computer Misuse Act, usually used to combat hacking and electronic fraud. People have been arrested for it.

Quote from: BBC News

A man has been arrested in connection with using a wi-fi broadband connection without permission.

He was initially detained by two Police Community Support Officers in Chiswick, west London, on Tuesday.

They became suspicious when they saw the 39-year-old using his laptop outside a house in Prebend Gardens.

When questioned he admitted to using someone else's unsecured wi-fi broadband connection. He has been bailed pending further inquiries.

The case is now being handled by the Metropolitan Police's computer crime unit.

Det Con Mark Roberts said: "This arrest should act as a warning to anyone who thinks it is acceptable to illegally use other people's broadband connections."

Dishonestly obtaining free internet access is an offence under the Communications Act 2003 and a potential breach of the Computer Misuse Act.

Note correct (British) spelling of 'offence'.

Also in the USA arrests have happened.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The part that gets me though is that when they are caught, or lose the access they had, they then act as though they are the one who has been wronged.I read a funny story once, I don't know if it was true, about an American guy who noticed that somebody was connecting to his wireless internet, so he secured it and not long afterwards his neighbour (Brit spelling) came hammering on his door demanding to know why he had cut off "his" (the neighbour's) internet! There is fun to be had... here are some fun things you can do to people who steal your internet

The bit about redirecting every request to Kittenwar is funny, especially where the Kittenwar guy says he keeps getting complaints that he is hosting a virus stopping people accessing the net.

I agree. It's kind of like those bait car shows, where they lure in criminals to jack cars. They then proceed to arrest the set up crook.

Well I believe I know who one of the two voters are that said yes but I wonder who the other one was and why neither voter wanted to post why they think it is free. The fact that people have been arrested for stealing wireless access kind of answers the question.

Also, depending on timing of when the owner and unauthorized user are using wifi, it could be lowering the owners bandwidth. Quote from: rthompson80819 on October 23, 2010, 04:51:38 PM

But I'd be interested to know how the court cases came out.

Interesting question. I've read about a number of people that have been arrested for stealing wireless. A lot of states in the US, and I'm SURE other countries, have laws against stealing wireless, and fines for doing it. But I can't seem to find any record of convictions.

It would be a hard thing to prove in court unless some kind of sting was set up. And I think most police departments feel like they have more important things to do.It is a radio signal. Anyone would be perfectly just in saying that if you don't want me to receive it, then keep it off my antenna. To say anything less, is to open the door for all kinds of problems, elsewhere in the radio spectrum. How can receiving anything be "illegal", when it is cut loose in the air?
How about if your signal comes onto my property? Are you actually going to try to say that I can't listen to it? ... it makes no sense.
*You* are responsible for your signal, not the receiver. The receiver is passive.

All the attempts at comparison above are not even close to what is really happening.

Each person that is transmitting a signal can be held responsible for it though. The way to logically regulate wifi then, is to regulate the transmitters... the laptops that also transmit. *That* can reasonably be regulated. But, it would be a very touchy thing, now.

A more interesting discussion would be: If a wifi signal is encrypted with state of the art encryption, and someone hacks it - should *that* be illegal?
With no "locking", then the owner of the transmitted signal should keep his signal off any one's antenna that he does not want to receive it. But, if he is clearly attempting to "lock" it... is it still just a signal out there to be received like all others? or can he claim some ownership of it?
That one would be tricky in court.

if you don't want me to receive it, then keep it off my antenna.

Thats just irresponsible. To find the signal, you would have to look for it, and it not yours to use. You've also contradicted yourself. You state '*You* are responsible for your signal, not the reciever'. So therefore, if you are 'tuned' into that signal, then you are recieving a signal THAT SOMEONE ELSE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR. It is not yours. Thousands, probably MILLIONS of text messages and mobile/cell calls are flying around in the air. That does not give you the right to listen in or recieve them. Your antenna picks up everything, its your equipment that deciphers it and you control your equipment, therefore it would be YOU that made your equipment pick up someone elses signal. Is my dog free to bite you because its not on a lead. Just because you can pick up a unlocked signal does not mean you should. Like i've said before, is a unlocked car a free car. No, it is not. Your arguement is ridiculous. Quote from: WillyW on October 23, 2010, 06:58:51 PM
It is a radio signal. Anyone would be perfectly just in saying that if you don't want me to receive it, then keep it off my antenna. To say anything less, is to open the door for all kinds of problems, elsewhere in the radio spectrum. How can receiving anything be "illegal", when it is cut loose in the air?

\you're not just receiving signals, your interacting with somebody elses piece of property- the access point- possibly purposely with the intent to circumvent and use the service provided by that device. If somebody was able to create a device that was able to use a cellphone network without them paying the company, would it follow that it's somehow the cellphone companies fault for making it "easy".

Quote
How about if your signal comes onto my property? Are you actually going to try to say that I can't listen to it? ... it makes no sense.
*You* are responsible for your signal, not the receiver. The receiver is passive.

The receiver is NOT passive. In order to use said signal, the receiver needs to respond and interact with said signal. As I noted above the only reason somebody might do that would be in order to use the service the device provides for free. It's like saying that you can use somebody's computer for free because their wireless keyboard/mouse just happens to be compatible with yours, and you can sit outside their window and do stuff using your keyboard/mouse. It follows that if the receiver is "passive" then the sender is equally innocent in that case since all they are doing is sending a harmless signal.

Quote
Each person that is transmitting a signal can be held responsible for it though. The way to logically regulate wifi then, is to regulate the transmitters... the laptops that also transmit. *That* can reasonably be regulated. But, it would be a very touchy thing, now.
Any WiFi device that can connect to a access point transmits.

Not really. circumventing any sort of security in place at all on a network, wireless or otherwise, is an electronic crime. I know that Canada's Criminal Code, section 342.1 prohibits accessing a computer without authorisation. That covers the use of both "Open" networks just as much as it covers those that are Encrypted. I imagine the laws of other countries are nlot much different, this sort of thing might even have some sort of coverage by the DMCA in the US.

That being said- "listening" to signals as they pass through the air is probably covered by a completely different law, if you purposely don't send any signal in response (and therefore are not truly accessing any system) could possibly fall under wiretapping laws, depending on the circumstances.

If a TV station was transmitting a signal that was encrypted and they sold little boxes to decrypt the signal for a fee, would it be "wrong" to reverse engineer the encryption and be able to receive that signal for free? Personally, I don't think so. IMO that signal is not a COMMUNICATION between two people, but rather a large-scale signal sent to the public at large; although even the slightest bit of "reverse ENGINEERING" of even the simplest encryption is clearly prohibited by the DMCA, other countries laws on that subject are not as clearcut; there is only one way communication and the device is merely translating something in the air that is receivable by anybody; legally I don't think there is much difference between receiving that encrypted signal "legally" and decrypting that signal; the decryption is acting on something anybody can have, so it seems stupid to have some sort of restriction on how a encrypted signal can be used when the receiver has not made any agreement with the sender; in this case it's a matter of the encryption itself being too weak and easy to figure out as much as anything.

I tried to repaint the black hair of a subject in one of my photos but the result was as if the subject was wearing a wig
because the blackness came out as flat as a plastic smear on the HEAD.

How to make the hair look lively (LIKE in the original shot) and not a dark featureless patch?

Step-by-step instructions, if POSSIBLE, please, as am an oldage pensioner struggling with computer navigation.

Grateful for your help.Hair is a difficult thing to get right, even experts don't always manage a good job. I would FIND a picture of somebody with the kind of hair that you want and use the image clone brush to paint hair into the picture you are trying to alter.

If it looked lively in the original shot, why are you messing with it?
Thks for prompt help. Will try cloning , as you suggest.

I am messing with the original as I changed the BACKGROUND which is now a light brown colour but, in doing so, the edge of the head of hair where it meets the background colour shows a thin layer of brown which I want to change to black.

As for the featureless black, perhaps I should forget about it since you say it is a very difficult job which bothers even the experts, let alone me.

Thank you again.Type Photoshop hair into Google for lots of discussions and tips about this famously tricky subject.

Solve : Can someone find out that you've been searching them??

Answer»

I met someone on from IMDb. They seemed very familiar so I googled their email address, to make sure they weren't messing with me. From that Google search I clicked on a site that they had joined some time ago, tried to join myself and was rejected. In the rejection email, the site sent me a link to my Google search of this person's email and used it as the reason for my rejection.

My question is, is it possible that this person will know that I've been looking for information about them and tried to join this site because they had? I'm not trying to stalk, I'm only trying to protect myself from someone who stalks ME and might be doing it through this particular IMDb account.Or will then sane people out there see it for what it is? I'm not sure which part you are talking about, but I'm not making this up. I know nothing about how any of this stuff works, hence the name, and when I was sent this rejection email with a link to the exact Google search that I had done (that led me to the site) I freaked out.

When you click on a link which is a Google search result, the site that you go to via the link gets no information whatsoever about the Google search that you had typed. You must be confused. I expect a number of people on here are now "watching" you, for signs of paranoia or trollery. Or just for amusement.

Paranoia? Absolutely. Trollery? No.
All I know is they sent me an email saying 'Your registration has been rejected .........' and included a link. When I clicked on that link it sent me to Goodle and '[email protected]' was in the search bar. Exactly what I had typed to find the site in the first place. What site? Does that matter?

Well, up to now we have your word that "a site" has sent you a rejection email. If we knew what it was, we might know, or be able to discover, what might have happened. All we know so far is that you "met" somebody on IMDB (a site about movies). You then Googled their email address (why?) and tried to join a site that you allegedly found in the Google search results (why?). (But you're not a stalker. Oh no.) Then the site sent you an "rejection email" with a link in it. What form the link took is not made clear. I think that in the absence of any more information, this thread is not going to go very far.

Someone else from IMDb had been harassing me through PM and email. It was amusing at first, but then it became scary. I think they thought I was someone else. That's the only thing I can come up with. My presence there has never been significant enough to warrant a stalker. When this new person started 'talking' to me I thought maybe it was the same person, so yeah, I Googled them. I wanted to know if this was same person that had given me trouble before. That's all.

I didn't think this question would be so problematic. Quote from: dunce on October 23, 2010, 06:39:35 AM

That would be your browser's autocomplete, or something similar, most likely. Also, if you truly mean the "Search bar" then it's contents won't change when you navigate sites. It would still have your original search term as you followed the various links.

Although I find it ODD that they would list google as a reason to reject your registration, since most registrations are automated and therefore it wouldn't be particularly feasible to create a software implementation that is able to analyze google results for completely unrelated queries about other peoples E-mail accounts and somehow base a rejection on that.

Bottom line- it's not possible for anybody (except maybe google, and of course your own browser) to ever know anything you searched for. Google just knows your IP searched for a certain QUERY. I doubt they keep a particularly detailed record of that type of thing though, due to a number of privacy laws in various countries.

The thing is, even if it were possible, the first thing to have to happen would be that said person would need to WONDER if people are googling them. In this case, you googled (to my understanding) the E-mail address (in a misguided attempt to see if Person A from IMDB (which to my understanding doesn't even have a forum, and if it did would be unlikely to publically reveal the E-mail addresses of members (or was this person actually directly E-mailing you?). So, the person would not have to wonder WETHER somebody is googling their name or address, but rather wether people are googling for their possibly disposable E-mail address. There is no reason for them to wonder this, and even if they could find this information, it wouldn't be particularly useful. What if they were able to know you googled them? I fail to see what particular significance it might have. (Again, most of that was hypothetical, there are far too many "barriers" to getting this information and that information would be particularly useless in almost any context).

Not true. If the browser fills out the REFERER header field then the site that is visited via the google search get's the entire URL of the search page; the URL can be parsed to reconstruct the exact search that was made. But that only applies to websites; it's doubtful that a website would keep that information around throughout the entire registration process, and even less likely that they would reject a registration based on that information.

http://cafe.elharo.com/privacy/privacy-tip-3-block-referer-headers-in-firefox/

This shows how, in about:config, to set network.http.sendRefererHeader to 0. The default value is 2.

If you now have problems with certain sites (e.g. Wordpress) try setting it to 1.

0 completely disables the referrer header.
1 sends a referrer header when following a link to another page, but not when loading images on the page.
2 (the default) sends referrer header when following links and when loading images on the page

Good Tip there...just turned mine off.

Is it feasible that a small, special-interest forum might have a manual registration process? I have joined forums where all applications are checked by admins and you have to wait. The very fact that a "rejection email" is sent at all is significant. And might they LOG and examine the referrer information? And draw an inference, justified or not, from the fact that the attempted enrolment was directly from a Google search for an existing member's email address?

I wonder what inference they might draw from the absence of a referrer header, or would it just look as if the attempting enroller had typed the url directly into the address bar?

Solve : Channels for wireless?

Answer»

I'm having issues with my Netgear wireless and my phone. When I pickup the phone I get cut off the internet. According to Vonage, since my phone and router are both running at 2.4 GHz , and are apparently using the same channel, I must change one of them. I can't seem to find how to identify what channels are being used, and then change. I've tried a couple of different programs, (all of which I found here) but none offer assistance with using Windows 7 64 bit, which is what I'm using. Your thoughts and suggestions, as always, would be greatly appreciated. To change the channel on your wireless router, you need to look through the configuration web page for your wireless router (usually http:/192.168.0.1, but check your router's documentation). There will be a channel selection option somewhere in the configuration. Every router has it in a different location, so you'll need to either look around for it or check your documentation.Thanks. Tried that but had to go to1.1 instead of 0.1.....Anyway then it asked for username and password, but I'
ve never entered one. When I hooked the router up it automatically linked in and started working.Bother idea. Get rid of your phone. What kind of phone is it? It should not share the spectrum with WI-Fi devices.
Here is a ad copy fir a popular wireless phone for use in North America.
Quote

Panasonic KX TG9333T Cordless phone

DECT 6.0 (Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications) technology lets you move freely around your home with long range and amazingly clear sound. It also assures greater protection against eavesdropping for all your calls. Operating in the 1.9GHz frequency range, your phone will not conflict with other wireless devices such as computer routers, wireless keyboards, microwave ovens and other common household devices. Now you can program each handset to ring - or not - at your discretion. Before going to sleep, simply set the bedside handset to Night Mode so that it won't ring in your bedroom. In the meantime, the handset in the den will still ring when that important call comes in without disturbing the person who's sleeping. Now you don't have to be holding the phone to SEE who's calling. Using text-to-speech technology, the Caller ID information is announced between rings. Panasonic's KX-TG9300 series DECT phones also boast a talking alarm clock that will tell you when it's time for lunch, and a talking battery alert that politely tells you when your battery is low with a "please charge phone" reminder. Store the Caller ID info of any and all unwanted callers into your phone's Call Block list so that you can eliminate future pesky calls. After the information is stored, those unwanted callers will receive a busy signal when they call you again. Don't miss important calls when the ringer is off. The Light-Up Indicator with Ringer Alert at the base of the antenna will flash quickly to show that you have an incoming call, and it will flash slowly to let you know you have a new message. So turn off the ringer and ....
From the above you can see these normal cordless phones do not use the same band. So, the question is, Why do you need a phone theft conflicts with the Wi-Fi spectrum? Where do you live?
A workaround would be to force all you network devices to only use the upper band.

For an in-depth STUDY, please look at this link.
http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/wireless80211/a/aa80211standard.htm

I had considered that option, but thought maybe there would be a simple way to just change the router. I understand not being able to change the phone.
Thank YouYou did not say which router you have nor did you indicate which phone you have. Stuff changes.

More information about the nature this problem is in the link I gave you in my last post.
The TECHNICIAN who told you to just change the channel may not have understood the nature of the problem. In the present wi-fi protocol, changing to another channel is only effective if all devices in range respect the current protocol. In other words, they all conform to the present day standards for the wi-fi protocol. That would not be true of cordless telephones. Cordless telephones don't know anything about the wi-fi standard. They do whatever they think they need to do to establish communications, including destroying any communications link you have established. The article I referred to earlier explains how this sad situation came about. It was poor planning on the part of the agencies that are supposed to control this sort of thing.

Yes, there is a way to get the router to work around this. We can not give you the specific information you would need. Not knowing which router it is, we don't know it's even possible and even then, it also depends on all the other devices you have in your system. The other devices have to have the CAPABILITY e to switch to the upper band. Just changing over to another channel won't solve the problem. All devices must switch to the upper band.
if it's 802.11g I don't believe you would be able to change it. and 802.11n would require that all devices are N devices, and support dual-band operation, since it still primarily uses 2.4ghz for compatibility with the 802.11g devices.

Changing the channel on the router changes the frequency, but it's still at 2.4ghz. The range is very small, and chances are the phone uses a large range for no good reason (after all, it was probably made before wifi became omnipresent and therefore the entire 2.4ghz band was unused.

The only fix would be the replace the phone. Either that, or replace every SINGLE wifi device and hope they all meet the proper specifications for 802.11n so that they can operate in the higher bands. Even then they still perform the protocol communications in 2.4ghz so it would be pretty futile. a new phone costs probably 50 dollars, whereas replacing all your wifi equipment with dual band 802.11n could go to 200$ just for a router, and even then it's a slim chance that it will workaround the old cordless phone. Thanks fellas.
I think I'll just go with another phone. I can get a DECT for around $25.

You're absolutely correct. From what I could tell it was just one IP so off that logic it would be a DoS attack. Although seems like the server getting overloaded as it was that it was a BIGGER attack, but that single IP seemed to be the primary culprit.

I suppose it couldn't have been somebody practising with the ping command and UNINTENTIONALLY causing a flood? But I am confused. There are 3 VirginMedia fibre packages: down/up bandwidths in megabits are 10/1, 20/2 or 50/5. The last of these is quite expensive - 38 UK pounds (60 US dollars) a month. Also these upload speeds are 300% approx increases and have only just (30 Sep 2010) been announced; they are being rolled out across the network over the next few weeks. Many users are still on the old upload speeds. So (pardon my ignorance) how does one little guy in England at the end of a domestic cable connection overwhelm a server thousands of miles away? I thought that that the bandwidth of one domestic user would be so small, compared to the server where CH is hosted, that a single-IP DOS attack would be ruled out, but evidently I am missing something?

I was wondering about BUILDING a COAX network cable. I have a tv cable that had its rf connector break off. I just wondered if these arent
all RG-59 or if there something else. Actually, RG-6 has become more common than RG-59, but they need different connectors. Even RG-59 has several different sizes of connectors DEPENDING on the type of shielding.I need to have one as a backup for my server. I wanted too PUT bnc connectors on it really.BNC is a better connector but depending on the make and model it can be much more difficult to put on.just wanted too know wether or not there was a way too tell if its rg-59 cable thoughRG-59 coaxial cable is COMMONLY packed with consumer equipment, such as VCRs or digital cable/satellite receivers. Manufacturers tend to include only RG-59 cables because it costs less than RG-6 does. However, given the short lengths provided (usually 4-6 feet / 1.2-1.8 m), this is generally sufficient for its typical use.

Its enough for a backup connection. Probably will just be one cable though from the old server

Solve : Need a new laptop for college?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I need a new laptop for college. My former one has become obsolete because now the system requirements are higher.

Minimum System requirements (as denoted by my college):

- Intel Core 2
- 4 GB RAM
- 100 GB hdd

My personal system requirements:

Code: [Select]- boots quite fast (I don't want lag, especially not during lecture or labo, because I don't want to lag behind (literally and figuratively))
- no lag even after installing over 300 applications
- very good, fast harddisks with good L2/L3 cache and access time (to the point: no slow disks! Again, don't want to lag behind and need fast disk acces time)
- fast RAM access time (also for PROGRAMMING, I don't want lag, or at least minimal lag)
- good, reliable RAM
- a good form factor and no heating issues.
- decent motherboard
- wifi
- vga
- network card
- optic media (DVD/CD reader/writer)
- bluetooth
- 4X USB
- 5 to 8 hour battery life on medium usage

In short: I am look for a very decent laptop that has to be powerful as a motorcycle, fluent as oil and durable/reliable as a rock. I can't afford to lag during my high requirement-lectures.

There is a teeny itsy bitsy problem though.. I'm just a student and I don't have a lot of money..
So my budget is either credit-wise 50/75 euro a month or between 700 and 1000 euro (don't have time to save up because classes already start. Don't know, maybe I could save up and use this laptop temporarily (with only 2 GB DDR dual channel RAM).

Someone recommended me a MacBook Pro and says you can run Windows on it because the latest macs, since 6 years ago, have a standard Intel Chipset. I don't know about this because I have too much to study and I lost track of HARDWARE news etc.

Any recommendations?
Deadline: 20 september

I would get something with a solid state drive and Windows 7. Having a solid state drive will bring your boot times down to less than 30 seconds (Windows 7 knows how to really take advantage of ssd), prolong your battery life (FEWER moving parts), and increase the durability of the laptop (no conventional hard drive parts to hurt).

I favor Dell computers, but some people prefer other brands. www.dell.com Quote

a good form factor

How many different forms do laptops have now days?

Just would like to say that I have found a good one, recommended by my college (should've read my info pack earlier lol):

ASUS
Windows 7 Home Premium
Intel Core i5 450M
4 GB RAM
500 GB hdd
NVIDIA GeForce 310M 1GB

for pretty much 750 euro. ^^

Yay college. \o/

Solve : Alternative to the System Speaker?

Answer»

I recently got a NEW computer which does not have an internal system speaker. On my old computer, I used the system speaker as an ALERT for when I was not wearing my headphone. Now, I am looking for an alternative.

The only ideas I have come up with are to FIND either a USB DEVICE that I can make to beep like a system speaker or a USB powered light that I can program to blink. So far, I have not been able to find either.

I considered using regular sound card speakers, but I could not find a way to limit them to only certain alerts and no other sound.

Does anyone know of something I can use as an alert instead of the system speaker?Just out of curiosity, what computer doesn't have an internal speaker?I have a HP Pavilion p6310y with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

I cannot find the articles now but I read on the internet that manufacturers are shipping computers without internal speakers because it would save money.

I might be wrong about my computer not having an internal speaker but when I try to make it beep, I get a beep over my headphones instead. And if the headphones are not plugged in? Quote from: Allan on September 19, 2010, 11:02:28 AM

Both of my Shuttles (ST62K, BOUGHT Nov 2004, SN78SH7, bought March 2010). I believe most Shuttles omit the speaker.

Yeah, I believed the original poster.Neither my HP laptop nor my Dell tower has a system speaker and I miss it very much. I always us Windows Sticky Keys / Toggle Keys and relied on the speaker beep to tell me what mode it was in. Now it beeps in the audio speakers, if they are turned on, but there is a time delay and the tone is out of sequence. I hate it; so much for progress.

I hope you find a solution for your problem.

Come to think of it, in the Windows 7 Ease of Access Center there is a setting for using visual alternatives for sounds. Maybe there is something there that would work, if it's not too annoying.
It would be interesting to know why internal speakers are being phased out.

All of the ones I've seen were really cheap speakers that couldn't have cost that much, so I'm not sure they are being phased out for strictly financial reasons. Probably, most users didn't what all those beeps were for anyway and some found it annoying.

Solve : Trying to connect my laptop to my tv using s cable?

i bought a 7 pin s cable. how can i connect it to my tv so what im doing on the laptop show on the tv screen? i got Dell inspron E1505. And i do not have what looks like a MONITOR in a monitor on my F keysWhen you say s cable I'm guessing you mean s-VIDEO cable. Do you have an s-video output on your laptop? Most laptops don't normally have one. Do you have a s-video input on your TV? What inputs does your TV have?

What you want to do is easy if you have the right stuff.yes. i have a s video on my lap TOP and tv. but i got the s video cable that has the s video on one end than rca on the othe end. and yes i have rca hook up on my tv. i just dont know what to do on my laptop to be able to show my sreen up on the tvI WOULD like you to confirm that your TV is capable of receiving a digital input signal? truenorthi have 3 video inputs. 1 is for satilite, 1 more is for dvd player. and 3 one is for my comouter homefully. there all rca hook ups and working correctly. its a newer tv. maybe 1 year old Quote from: truenorth on September 17, 2010, 03:15:40 PM

I would like you to confirm that your TV is capable of receiving a digital input signal? truenorth

Why did you ask that? Separate Video, more commonly known as S-Video, also called Y/C, and sometimes incorrectly referred to as S-VHS or Super Video, is an analog video signal. Not digital.
Is your TV an LCD or Plasma HDMI (or HD ready)? I am including a link to a you-tube video that deals with connecting a computer to a second monitor or a TV. You will note that certain connecting cables are required depending on the output of the computer and as well the input of the TV. You will also note that a separate audio connection will also be required in many cases. Before investing any money make sure that the TV is capable of doing this properly with a good audio/video ability on the TV. In some cases damage to the TV can result if their is a resolution problem between the computer output and the TV resolution. Also even though the audio/video might be transferable the viewing quality might not be acceptable. I have done this but my cable connections were hdmi not S-video to RCA. Hope the video helps, truenorth

Solve : for all BT broadband users?

Answer»

if your line speed is slow as British line's are , then here is a free accelerator from BT all you pay is £1.20 for postage and it arrived within 24 hour's , my line speed doubled in the first hour but it will take 2/3 days to get up to full speed as it keeps checking every day

http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/consumerProducts/displayTopic.do?topicId=25075&s_cid=btb_FURL_acceleratorIs this a DSL or cable service?

I thought DSL speeds depends on 2 factors, the distance from the data center and the wiring you have in your house. I live in a very old house and I am subscribe to the 3Mbps, but I get about 1.5-1.6Mbps so I am losing at least half. I think more to do with the old wiring in the house then the distance.

So I WONDER how this device works?dsl , distance and wiring do not matter , my limit is 1.5mb but i was only getting 898 kb so i lost half as well , but it will boost it past the limit so i should finish up with about 2.5mb , thats what my neighbour 2 doors down is on With DSL, distance from either the central office or nearest fiber termination point definitely affects speeds. Generally, home wiring won't affect speed unless it is really bad.

With DSL voice traffic and data share the same wire. Voice traffic is at a very low frequency and data is at a higher frequency (although still very low by most standards).

BT doesn't go into details about the device, but it sounds like a filter to keep voice traffic from interfering with data.

I don't know about all DSL providers in the USA, but for the most part I think the filter is a standard part of the install. Quote from: rthompson80819 on September 14, 2010, 04:55:10 PM

[snip]

I don't know about all DSL providers in the USA, but for the most part I think the filter is a standard part of the install.

It is. When I got mine turned on it came with 4 filters. I've never heard of a service not coming with any.My lines are bad, I did get 4 DSL filters when we first got DSL, it was real exciting "high speed" internet without having to dial up and more then one person can get on at a TIME.

What we had problems with first was, we got the 1.5Mbps plan before they decide to up everyone to 3Mbps.. We still get about 1.5Mbps, but anyways..

The first day we got DSL I followed all the instructions. Plugged all the filters to ones connecting to the phone and unplugging phones that did not have filters. The first week we notice even though we had filters on, there was static on the line. it wasn't bad, just annoying.. Finally by the end of the month the static was so bad that we lost our dial tone so we could not make any outgoing or get any incoming calls... Plus it did not help that it knocked out our internet also.

I sent in a repair request to verizon via support ticket using a neighbor open Wifi.. ( Yes, US laws says that is illegal but how else was I suppose to contact them?) Within a few hours they sent a tech over and they went out to the lines and did something.. after that no more static and internet came back up.

I don't know if they cap your internet speed. I remember when the highest plan was 1.5Mbps then they were offering 3Mbps for the same price. I asked the verizon support center and they said I would automatically be enrolled to the higher plan and no cost. They told me the max speed I will get will be based on the quality of the phone line as well as distance from where ever they have the DSL switches.

So here I am at 1.54Mbps.. I was thinking about putting a new line to the telphone post outside (professional) but for DSL service and with Fios out I decided against it.i'm a short distance from the exchange 1 1/2 miles so that will make little difference , it would be different if i lived 5 , 10 miles away it would be slower then , but the wiring to the house is old and will be replaced within the next 2 years , i'll be checking the speed again soon

Hmm, that is real interesting.. According to where my IP address says I am, I am about 5.6 miles away from where the network center is, it could be farther.. I just looked up the city where the IP address is. It used to be 2.5 mies away, right downtown but I guess they moved it farther since people are using Cable or Fios in my area and move the DSL people to one area.

As for a special filter that cancel out interference.. That is something I would be interested in.. Every time there is a thunder/lightning storm in the area my internet connection keeps getting interrupted.. I would lose my internet connection for just a sec before trying to reconnect. I hate when that happens, but I have gotten use to it.. I wonder if it will help with the interference caused by storms?Storms/rain interruptions indicate a physical issue with the lines...USUALLY from the pole to the house.
No filter in the world is going to alleviate that issue... Quote from: Windows98 on September 16, 2010, 02:48:19 PM

Solve : How hot can a power supply run??

Answer»

Well today I went to check on my friends computer, They have Windows Firewall install by default on Windows XP and said if they should get a better one.. I thought they did.

Anyways, while CHECKING up on there computer I notice that there computer case was very warm.. When I mean warm I mean hot. It felt much warmer then my p4 prescotts running full in the summer. . Anyways, It was a concern to me and thought someone might have OC or tamper with settings in the Bios. So I restarted the computer... Only to find out that the computer did not restart, just shut down..

Also I noticed that the computer would not turn back on...

Long story short..

I open the case and plugged it back in when it cool down... Come to find out The Power supply fan was NOT working! The computer was getting power and it was still working.. However the fan on the power supply did not spin at all! They leave there computer on 12 hours a day and they have been having problems with this heating problem for one week now, they only asked when I was running there computer and notice something wasn't right as a lot of heat was being generated...

The power supply was still giving power to Hard drives x 2 CD drives x2 Video card AGP x1, PC Memory x2

There CPU AMD Athalon 1.66Ghz was reading 67 Celsius
My P4 Prescott 2.8Ghz at most goes up to 61 Celsius.

They told me the computer was warmer then normal, could it be from moving the computer from the desk to the floor on carpet? Is it getting enough air?

The computer never crashed, it ran somewhat slowly but I upgraded there memory from 256MB to 2 GB so the memory did most of the work.. The computer was operable but just ran very warm.

So my questions are:

So how hot can a Power supply get before something bad happens?

And can power supplies explode under extreme temps?

Isn't the power supply suppose to have some sort of faulty detection that should prevent it from turning on if problems are detected?

What is a safe temp that a computer should automatically shut down at?

Also I recommend that they get a 300-350W power supply since there PC is very old and don't really need to add any extra hardware,(I think there power supply is currently 230W -250W there was no sticker and label anywhere! would that be to small or should they go to 400W?

They had a lot of dust and I cleared it out before starting back up.. It looked like the heat generating from the power supply was being dispersed throughout the entire computer case. If you try to touch the power supply or the metal in the back closest to the power supply, you would not be able to hold it long because it will burn your hand..

They run an AMD athalon 1.66GhzLong answer short

If fan on power supply don't work then replace with one of equal or greater size. Quote from: mroilfield on September 12, 2010, 12:54:30 AM

Long answer short

If fan on power supply don't work then replace with one of equal or greater size.

yes thats what I plan to do replace it with a larger size.

My concerns were that, I thought all power supplies would have some sort of malfunction detection in it so it would shut down and not operate if something was not working properly.

They was lucky I was there and realized that the fan in the back was not working. It could have been a real fire hazard!

They were also lucky to have an old computer case which was huge and metal and for the most part manage to absorb most of the heat through out the case. Also lucky that the fan they have upfront also was working overtime trying to keep air inside the case and it was a pretty cool week in the summer.

I just wonder how hot a power supply can get before something real bad happens. I mean the capacitors inside the power supply could have warped from the heat or at least melted based on how hot the actual power supply was.

I know these new power supply have voltage regulators, but I was wondering if anyone knew if power supplies have any self detection, if something is not right it wont turn on/work.
Quote
I know these new power supply have voltage regulators, but I was wondering if anyone knew if power supplies have any self detection, if something is not right it wont turn on/work.
Probably depends on the quality of the PSU (power supply unit). The price range for a new PSU can be quite wide and buying the cheapest is really not the best thing to do.

I once bought a PSU that got very hot even though the fan was working. The computer case got so hot right above the PSU that it was almost too hot to touch. I returned it and got a different one; with this one, the case gets only mildly warm on top. So, even with a new PSU, observe it closely for awhile to make sure it's not running too hot.

I do agree that a 300-350W PSU is probably adequate for that computer. As you said, the existing one is probably only 230W -250W.

Regarding replacement of the fan, this reference has some useful information: http://www.instructables.com/id/Computer-Power-Supply-Fan-Replacement/. Beware of the warning there: "Power supplies have dangerous voltages inside, even when completely disconnected. Capacitors on the line side usually RETAIN their full charge even when unplugged, and can inflict a painful or even lethal shock. Please proceed only if you know what you are doing."

I suggest you also review the case fan configuration in that computer and verify that they are moving air the right direction. For example, if a case has a fan in front and a fan in back, the fan in front should usually be drawing air in and the one on the back should be exhaling air out of the case.

Regarding placement of the directly on carpet, that's a bad situation since the computer may normally pull in some air from small holes in bottom of the computer case. I have a tower system sitting on a carpeted floor but I have a wood board under the computer; therefore, the computer is not actually sitting directly on the carpet. Unless it has OTP (Over Temperature Protection), which very few of them do.
This would be a good test for the Myth Busters. Disconnect or STOP the psu fan and see how long it takes for the computer to catch on fire.Extremely high temperatures can damage consumer grade electronics, it doesn't take an actual fire, but just high temperatures can either destroy, or drastically shorten the life of consumer electronics. There are electronics that are made for extreme conditions, but you won't find them in the average PC.Well, lets just say the power supply was hot enough that if you were touch it you probally get burned. Considering the metal cover which allows your motherboard connectors/ports to go through so you can plug things like the mouse, keyboard.. Don't know what that piece is called was to hot to touch also.

As for ventilation, this a pretty old computer with one of those large metal cases with pretty bad air circulation. There is a huge fan in the front of the case right next to the "speaker" and there is no room to put a fan in the back. It was horrifically covered with dust everywhere since they don't vacuum a lot and it was mostly clean last time I left it.

The computer doesn't have that well of a ventilation to be honest, it is what you expect in an older model computer. No holes on the side, the only holes are right underneath the front panel, those small holes which the fan takes in air, and the small metal back in which there are those very small holes again just to let air out.. I guess because the computer is somewhat tall and big it allowed the heat to flow around without causing so much problems...

As for internal damage.. Hmm, I don't know. you usually get booklets that says do not use under these number temps that no one normal will ever reach, but who knows I guess we will find out in the long run. I might head back out Saturday to help put in a new power supply, if she has trouble. I explained to her it was not that hard just unplug the giant connector in the motherboard and the ones connected to the hard drive and CD drive first, unscrew the 4 screws HOLDING the power supply(it slides out) and just do the opposite of what you did to get it out with the new one.

short reading:
From my experience I have never had a power supply fan go out and have a computer with so much heat before! I have had power supplies that just don't work or they just make a loud pop sound and nothing comes on.

I guess I should be grateful that it was a 230-250W power supply, imagine if it was a 350+W that had a failed fan, I am sure a fire would really have happened.

There aren't different kinds of watts. They all measure the rate of transfer of energy. one watt is equal to one joule of energy being transferred every second.

Watts are a measure of the rate of energy conversion
1 Microwave Watt = 3.4 BTU's/hour
PSU Watts = Volts * Amps

I think both are a waste of time. (But I still think it's great!) I always catch myself waiting for it to finish my query for me instead of typing it in myself, which would be a lot faster. I think it's fun to see what it thinks I'm trying to ask. But YA, definitely a time waster. I see more ad links than ever....a waste.I have absolutely no idea what any of you are talking about. Google looks exactly the same to me as it has for ages. The autocomplete is pretty much the same as it has been.

I certainly don't see search results until after I press enter or click the search button.

(I tried going to google.uk instead of .ca but same story there as well).

Oh wait, I was able to get it to work, I had to go to google.com via the link on the .ca page. (I can't just say google.com in the address bar of course because it will helpfully redirect me to the .ca domain)

It's sort of interesting... not something I would go out of my way to utilize, though, except maybe when I'm not sure what terms to use. That doesn't happen very often, though.

Solve : Hamachi, safe??

Answer»

I've been wondering. If Hamachi can bypass your firewall (some which blocks your whole interweb life) be SAFE? I mean how? It could be Hamachi leaks important info, I'm pretty sure it can only bypass Windows Firewall, after all, that's the only firewall most people have. If you don't trust it completely, get Online Armor from http://www.majorgeeks.com/.

Direct link: http://majorgeeks.com/Online_Armor_Free_d4872.htmlWell I have another Firewall...anyway.
Why WOULD hamachi need to bypass it? Can't it go through it? Quote from: Redcaa on September 12, 2010, 08:36:59 AM

Well I have another Firewall...anyway.
Why would hamachi need to bypass it? Can't it go through it?

What would be the point of a firewall if everything can get through it? You do understand the entire purpose of a firewall is to STOP incoming and outgoing connections, and you do understand that hamachi performs both incoming and outgoing connections?

If you are going to become suspicion of a tool like hamachi because it manages to add exceptions and suspect it is "leaking important info" (whatever the *censored* that means) why do you trust your firewall itself? How do you know the firewall isn't connecting to the company site and leaking important info either?

You don't because it is designed to be safe, and Hamachi is designed to be as easy to use as possible, this includes setting up applicable firewall exceptions during setup for a few popular firewall applications. This is not a "risk" because these exceptions can only be made after you give a program administrator permissions. If you don't trust the program for whatever reason. Don't use it. Clearly the thousands of other people using Hamachi are just not as observant as you are of the "obvious" leaking of important data.

I'm not, nor was I, irritated.
Hamachi, at least when I used it before LogMeIn bought them, is/was a VPN Tunneling tool. It sends data/traffic through an encrypted UDP tunnel. Only people that are members of the same 'groups' that you are will be allowed to access resources that you have openly shared. In essence, Hamachi makes it so whomever is in the group 'appears' to be on the same LAN, giving them the same access to your machine as if they were sitting next to your sharing a switch.

As mentioned, you must explicitly give the program permission to make the exceptions in your firewall required by it to run. If I remember correctly, there is only one port used.

However, again if I remember correctly, Hamachi does talk to 'master' node in order to setup connections to the other peers in your groups. This only lasts until a direct connection is ESTABLISHED between your machine and theirs, though. No personal information is TRANSMITTED during this process, just what it takes to setup a direct connection between the peers, much as a tracker for torrents works. Thanks for the info SilentAssasin64 You're welcome.

Hamachi can be a really useful tool if you use it to it's full potential. But, like I said, it didn't used to have all the restrictions it does now. However, still a useful tool.

Solve : my rant with verizon support?

Answer»

Ok, so today getting some free time I decided to call Toshiba support to register my new laptop, also call webroot to get my license fixed.

How it started: One day my license from MSN premium expired for Webroot spy sweeper( ~year ago), contacted webroot and they told me trouble with MSN servers so they gave me a new license. A few months later into my license, it just expired because of to many activation... Come to find out the license was good for 1 PC, while the MSN license was good for 2 PC..

After talking to there support and getting things cleared up, they gave me a new license, good for 1 PC and I should go talk to MSN about generating and assigning me a new key, if I WANT it automated and if I wanted on 2 PC. Otherwise I would have to contact Webroot every year to have the key renewed -_-...

So I call MSN and no surprise a menu full of options, and the machine It checked my phone number and forwarded me to Verizon tech support... After going through there menus I finally get someone from tech support.

I explained to them that I have software through MSN premium and asked if they can generate or fix my current key/license problem with Webroot.. The next thing he asked me to do was completely baffling!

He wanted to remote access my computer to see what the problem was.. WHY?!!! I have no computer problems and I just wanted the license issue fixed I told him what I told the webroot people. A year ago my Webroot subscription just expired and Webroot told me they had trouble communicating between MSN servers and Webroot servers. So they issue me a new key and I was hoping just to get a new key through MSN members page that will renew itself every year rather then asking webroot every year to renew. The key as of now still does not work!

He made me install some sort of remote access software as I said fine whatever, I just needed a license fixed and I guess he wanted to see the expire notice. He contacted supposetly "MSN specialist and networking specialist"??

After spending 2 hours not being able to remote access he told me that in order for them to continue they have to be able to see my screen first for some reason.. Again.. WHY!?

So after wasting 2.5 hours on the phone with them they gave me my manufactures phone number to call to see if I can get the remote access thing resolved! They gave me HP number...

How can something so simple as asking them to help with a key problem with MSN software give me such problems and waste so much time!! and why on earth do you need to REMOTE ACCESS SOMEONES COMPUTER! When it was clear it was a problem on there end and not mine.

So I wasted 2.5 hours today for someone who could not even do something simple as help me either to obtain a new key or at least fix my current key problem. If they couldn't solve it at least forward me to someone from MSN so at least I can talk to them rather then trying to get this remote access software up and running.

He made me go to safe mode with networking support, msn web browser test, reset settings etc.. trying to get the remote access thing to work -_- I did not need remote access I just needed someone to help with my license and key problem.

Also anyone know MSN support direct line or how I can contact an operator directly?! When I dial that 1-800 number it forwards me to verizon and apparently verizon staff have no clue when it comes to software through MSN..MSN is not an independent ISP like Verizon, AT&T or Comcast. I found this explanation:

Back when the World Wide Web was starting to get the public's attention, Microsoft had a "better" idea: The Microsoft Network (MSN), a centralised SYSTEM they'd run, one that required Microsoft software - and subscription fees - to access. The public wanted access to the internet itself instead, so MSN has since been converted to a combination of Web sites and dial-up internet access, to make it more attractive. Microsoft uses their control of Windows to steer buyers into SIGNING up with MSN when they first start their new computer, making it look like just another step in the setup process. They've even cut deals with stores to sign buyers up for MSN, whether you want it or not. You may save some money on the purchase price of a computer that way, but it'll cost you dearly over the coming years as you're contracted to pay Microsoft for it every month. Meanwhile, Microsoft gets a step closer to transforming the Web itself into their original vision of MSN: a pay system run by them. But you don't have to settle for a bad idea warmed over; you can get on the internet through an independent ISP and remain free to make your own choices.

This explains why they refer you to Verizon which is your telephone and/or DSL provider. Time to dump MSN & Webroot, there is no added value to either one.Just dump webroot and install Microsoft Security Essentials. My IT department dumped webroot a few months ago after a bunch of people complained of malware on their computers. Quote from: michaewlewis on September 10, 2010, 11:23:27 AM

I don't really trust Microsoft for antivirus/firewall. Win9x kinda ruined it for me.

What? in the 9x era they didn't have either.I actually have 3 security software on my computer, Comodo Internet Security, Microsoft Security essentials and Webroot Spysweeper. ( I have emsisoft free in the background as a second opinion but do not use it much only because when I run a scan it is super slow)

The reason for MSE is I trust there virus scan. It is much better and reliable then CIS antivirus. It(CIS) gave me plenty of false positive before and still giving me alot of false positive now. Plus it does not detect some viruses while MSE does. I gotta rely on there sandbox feature more then there actual virus scanner. I use to use there firewall before it was BUNDLED with all the other stuff and I really like there old version of the firewall.

For Webroot, I only use there common adsense shield block that is basically it, it works but as for the efficeny of webroot preventing spyware.. Well I never know.. I never had a major spyware attack before. I use Opera web browser and if some sort of script pops up on my page I just click the stop executing script button then close out.

I also get free McAfee firewall and anti virus.. My experience with them has been ok.. I trust there virus scanner more then I truse CIS virus scanner, but not there firewall, and for the sake of having so many security software that will just CONTRADICT with each other I decided to skip McAfee..

I did call them up again today.. and they said that I need to go directly to MSN as they have access to my MSN account and settings.. However if I wanted to call them there will be a charge of $2.99 a min for a direct line... I said no thanks and I am going to forget about it then.(between putting on hold and changing settings thats like 30 min right there. Rather spend money on some other software then..

I did subscribe during the Internet boom to DSL or cable.. I chose DSL because.. well internet was new and we did not need crazy high speed. Just a internet connection so more then 1 person can be on at the same time without interrupting phone calls. Plus the other thing to consider was AOL dial up for $29.99 or DSL for $29.99..

I am now debating on if I should get Fios its still pretty expensive in my opinion I was waiting for it to come down a bit before buying the 25/25 plan is currently $65 I was hoping more in the lines of $55-60 maybe in a few years when people in America realized that we need to expand our Internet infrastructure and to install faster lines then prices might come down...

All the programs you add and programs that start up with the computer slow it down. Having a small amount of RAM will slow it down. How much RAM do you have. What Operating Sytem are you using? In fact, any bit of general information about your PC would be helpful!!!

Have you defragmented the Hard Drive??

1) Installing programs DOES NOT slow down a computer
2) Defragmenting a HD is not a cure all

Do me a favor, my question was clear - don't explain my questions.Hi Sylverkitti

Allan makes a good point. It would be helpful if you could define "slow". In any case I suggest you take the following three steps.

1. Defragment
Yes, some people will tell you this is unnecessary because windows XP, Vista and 7 does this on its own (to some degree it does). But! in the case of defragmenting, it does a -terrible- job of it!
You can use the window utility or use a program I really like called Defraggler. See here: http://www.piriform.com/defraggler. In my humble opinion defraggler does a BETTER job anyway.

2. Run Disk Cleanup
Windows will CLEAN out cookies, temp files, caches, etc.

3. Run Ccleaner
Also found at http://www.piriform.com. Ccleaner is very good at cleaning up your computer. Only it finds and removes TONS more than Disk Cleanup does. It also has a registry cleaner you should certainly make use of.
Sylverkitti - before you do ANY of the above suggestions, please just answer my question and let me know what you mean by a slow system. Thank you. Quote from: Sylverkitti on September 08, 2010, 02:34:50 PM

Depends on how you define slow in answer to Allan's query, which has now been clarified badly twice. It could be driver issues, failing hard drive, or any number of things- in order to know we'll need to know exactly what you mean by slow. Or more precisely, what is slow, and how is it different then how it operated before it was "slow"?

Oh dear... I think the same question has now been clarified badly three times.

So, would they change the typematic delay (the amount of time you hold down a key) or would they change the rate (the speed with which keys repeats after that delay)? bear in mind what we are trying to fix here. Multiple KEYSTROKES of the same letter are ignored- as they demonstrate, they type good but it comes out god. Now, I don't know about you two, but most people type, even with words that have repeated characters, by lifting their finger off the key and then pressing it again. Typematic rate and delay only apply for keys that you hold down. You don't press G, hold down O until it repeats once, and then press D. (I SURE hope you don't).

However, it might not be a setting in the Intellitype software(not sure, I haven't used intellitype in years)- Either way, a possible setting is in fact the filterkeys accessibility tool. I'd also check any installed keyboard software (such as of course, intellitype) and see if a setting hasn't been changed there. (again, I'm not much use here since I haven't used Intellitype since it ran on windows 98)

Disable/change filterkeys:

XP: Control Panel->Accessibility Options either uncheck "use filter keys" or you can change the settings for filterkeys to reduce the amount of time it ignores them. (although it only goes to 2 seconds...). the shortcut for disabling enabling is to hold the right shift key for eight seconds.

Another OPTION: if that is not already enabled, it's probably intellitype; in that case I haven't a clue how to enable/disable to appropriate option. Unless you use specific features of intellitype, though, you might WANT to consider reinstalling it (which will hopefully restore defaults) or even uninstalling it entirely- it's not necessary to use your keyboard.

Okay I was under the impression that it also measured the delay between the same key being pressed again. The Op has enough information to solve the problem, it would be nice to have a progress report

A:) has nothing to do with dell. The "Halt On Error" setting in the BIOS means that when an error occurs during post it writes the description and then "press F1 to continue". So:

"Floppy disk(s) fail, Press F1 to Continue"
"Unknown Processor, Press F1 to Continue"
"BIOS Checksum error, Press F1 to Continue"
and of COURSE, if you have a keyboard error, it states the same thing.

The fact that you cannot press F1 is hardly relevant- it's simply reporting the error. Since you cannot, for all intents and purposes, Press F1 then you cannot continue.

B:) try using a PS/2 keyboard, and disable the "Halt on Errors" option in the BIOS as well as enabling any relevant "Legacy USB support" or "USB keyboard" type options.

C:) Homer says "DOH" not "DOLT".

D:) The joke relating to the whole "Keyboard error, press F1 to continue" error is a good 25 years old

The US Government can recover data of up to 15 passes, I believe. You'll want something that uses the Gutmann method like Eraser.Come on. What could possibly be on your system that is that important and who do you think is going to try to recover it? Just either FORMAT it or use a free utility to securely erase it. Bottom line, if someone REALLY wants to recover data (ie, the FBI), they can and will. The only SURE way to prevent it is a hammer.Actually noone can recover data from a 15 pass wipe... Actually noone can recover data from a 15 pass wipe...

Maybe there are technologies/recovery methods and algorithms that require security clearance to even know about? I certainly wouldn't be surprised.

Even if that is the case, though, you would have to have some pretty serious stuff on the HD in order for the government to be interested enough to try to recover it. your pictures of Fifi probably don't qualify.

Physical damage to a drive wouldn't present that much of a hurdle to well equipped technicians; Data can often be recovered from a secure deleted drive that was subsequently physical smashed and then BURNED. It hardly means the job is easy and in order for them to go to the effort you would have to be some kind of super high-profile cyber-terrorist with an army of deadly but generally personable killer robots, whose emotions aren't ABLE to prevent them from killing their victims but makes them feel bad and apologize profusely as they disembowel their victims. If you aren't then your standard secure delete or physical destruction methods will be more then sufficient to protect the drive from recovery by those who only have access to consumer-level recovery programs.I'll stick to my statement...
