Solve : Cheapest place for computer parts??

Answer»

I live in British Columbia, Canada. I'm looking to build a custom built desktop PC, quite possibly even build & sell them.

I'm wondering where I can find the cheapest computer parts? I'm having a hard time trying to GET parts for them same price as a desktop from the store.

Does anyone know where I can get cheap parts? The only TWO computer hardware stoees I know of in Canada are NCIX and Newegg.ca.
I'm not sure either of them will offer pricing that's low enough to let you build + sell machines at a decent profit margin, but I can't say for sure. Quote from: Calum on August 31, 2010, 12:11:15 PM

NCIX is too pricey, but I could make a profit of about $70-90 per machine (650 dollar PC) by buying from Newegg.ca. Would you say that is a decent profit margin? Quote from: Cityscape on August 31, 2010, 12:28:16 PM

I'd say 10% is a decent profit.Does your " , but I could make a profit of about $70-90 per machine (650 dollar PC)" include an allowance for your "time" to make it? If it does NOT then your just churning money. If it does include the time element then that is a very low profit margin and not one that is going to make you RICH. If you are serious about this idea then you need to do a LOT more research. If you think that one retail source will satisfy the best procurement option for the parts that go into making a computer you are getting off on the wrong foot. You will need to search out the best suppliers for the various components. You will need to establish all the things that are associated with starting a business to avail yourself of all the advantages that that brings.Unless of course your objective is to only "play" at this. In which case you might want to consider how you are going to deal with the 1st irate buyer of one of your computers  when they have a problem with it ? One's ability to continue in business and prosper is very dependent on customer relations and satisfaction. I would sell the machine at about $650, all parts, shipping & tax costing me $560. I would I would get a profit of $90 which would pay me for all the time & effort I put into the machine.

Right now I want to build only a few and sell them for a test. But I would like to build them and sell them regularly as a business. If I did it as a business I think I would offer a 1 year warranty on parts. So the customer would return the machine to me and I would contact the manufacturer and get the replacement part, install the part and return it to the customer. We only have one custom built computer shop in town and they have a bad reputation. They actually LIED to my computer tech friend. Quote from: soybean on August 31, 2010, 01:05:25 PM

I'm not sure what retail chains you have got up there, but in the USA you can go into a Walmart and have several basic PC's, and some decent brands, to chose from for a lot less than you are talking about selling PC's you would build.  They are not top of the line, but they are adequate for most people.

You will never compete with the big companies on price for basic machines.  They can buy parts for half of what you could ever find.  What you need to consider is building custom PC's that offer things you don't get from a retail chain like TV tuners, more memory, extra hard drives, etc.

You could build custom machines to order, charge your cost on parts plus an hourly rate. Quote from: rthompson80819 on August 31, 2010, 01:51:48 PM

For some people, the bigger thing that matters is whether the customer support is local. There are plenty of people who just don't want to wait on hold with customer support for the big name brands. That's where the local shop comes in and says, "Just bring your computer in and talk directly to us." It's a bigger selling point than you realize. We have Walmart, the Source (by Circut CITY), Staples and one smaller computer shop. Population of the city & immediate area is about 15,000.

When I enter info in a box, say a user name or password, and then press Tab to move to the next box the \ backslash is added after the info typed in thus RENDERING it incorrect, in the case of a username for instance. How do I stop this?what OS, what application(s)?

Answer»

Has anyone ever used this site before?

Is it legit?

Link Removedhttp://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/gifts4points.comNot only is there no direct contact information there is NO contact information at all!!! That in itself is a huge RED flag.

The contact information I did dig up for the website owner is a Gmail address. (winona78 at Gmail.com) Why would a website like that rely on a free Gmail account? Another red flag.

They aren't going to be around for long apparently...

Sites like this are normally scams. They try to get you to submit some personal data (bank account, credit card info etc.) with promises of some reward but in the end they are just RIPPING off as many people as they can until they get shut down.

Stay away! Too good to be true is still a reliable saying even on the Internet.

Well, for what it is worth, I have participated in a number of similar sites and despite popular belief, they usually are legit.  I have actually heard mostly positive stuff about this particular site and I have no reason to believe that this is a scam.  In fact, I signed up earlier and it looks perfectly safe.  These sites are normally run by average everyday people, which would explain the Gmail account.  Also, the site doesn't ask for any personal information beyond your name and address, as is the case with legitimate sites.  These sites either use Paypal, gift cards, or physical prizes, so all they ever need is your contact information.  If you are asked for bank information, it is time to leave.

Now, with that said...there is a catch.  With a site like this, the only person making any REAL money is the site owner.  For every thing that earns you money, the owner earns at least TWICE as much.  And it may TAKE you up to a month just to earn a $10 gift card for Amazon.  So, you have to wonder if it is actually worth the time and effort (although it is worth noting that it takes very little effort).  You'll spend a lot of time clicking on ads or signing up for offers you don't need (which can sometimes require money).  Of course, the real money is in snagging referrals and that is exactly what Bobby is trying to do.  It is a common tactic to go on a random forum and ask if anybody has heard of the site and then post an indirect link.  By using TinyURL, he is able to temporarily mask the real URL which contains his referral code (ref=lg342).  That is why I have changed the link in the original post...but I am keeping the thread around for the time being so others can see this.

So, to summarize: the site is safe and legit, but "Bobby" already knew that because he is just a spammer trying to get referrals.  And for anyone who is interested, these earn-points-for-completing-offers sites are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes to earning money online.  If you are really that desparate, survey sites are the way to go, as they pay much more money and they often send you free products to try out.  Just recently, I was sent two months of toilet paper and shower gel, and they paid me to try them!  And this is on top of the $70 I had already earned for the month from 10-minute surveys. Quote
Just recently, I was sent two months of toilet paper and shower gel

There is a really bad joke hiding in there....

Thanks Chris.Generally, I agree with Chris.
Obviously, you have to check what kind of info is required to join the site.
In the above case, all they want is your email address, so I don't see it as a big deal. Any website will require it to join.
I'm still a member of Memolink (at 12,000 points at the moment), In the past, I was able to get free iPod, thanks to earned points This is referral Spam...Topic Closed.

I just reverted to 10.5, but they aren't installing correctly. It says that it INSTALLS correctly but then I restart my computer and it says that no ATI drivers are installed. Click "ok". Try closing your mozilla browser(Press x) and reopen again mozilla and go back to TOOLS to see if they are the same default(Tools, options, Main, Downloads). If they are, close menu option and try downloading if its the same result.ty so much i am working on itSome of the newer sophisticated nasties out there in the wild prevent DLoading/running and updating both SAS and MBAM...

Doesn't this indicate someone may have gotten access to your account and changed the settings to add a mobile phone #.  If you didn't do it, how did a mobile # get into your gmail profile?  I'd take that as a indication someone else may have gotten your password and has accessed your account.

In the future, maybe you need to be more CAREFUL with passwords.yea i think i was hacked. I will just not use gmail anymore and be careful with my password.
I don't think it was a gmail problem.  Anyone who has gotten email from you knows your username and it's just a matter of either guessing, or seeing your password written down some place.

You could just open another gmail account with a different username and password.

You could contact gmail, explain the situation, and see if they would forward what's in the in-box, although expect them to be very sceptical.

If you have important stuff there it's worth a try.I agree with rthompson 100%...and you should find a new set of friends...
Anyone who stoops to that level should be out of your life forever and never trusted again...for anything.my email has been fixed and got a new password.i didnt have to give my mobile phone number to them i just emailed them with a yahoo account i have. it is resolved so i thought to post the outcome
i dont know if i was hacked.
just make sure you keep your password safe. Should i change my password often?make a complex password that you would remember.

Solve : Recovery disc??

Answer»

Is there anything on it that is absolutely necessary? My Sony vaio crashed and the hard drive was replaced and I was asked if I had a recovery disc which I don't. But I was wondering if I COULD use this as an opportunity to upgrade to windows 7? Any drivers I might need are on Sonys website so Is there gonna be anything I need on the disc? The recovery disc is just that - a recovery disc. If you want to upgrade to a different OS then the recovery disc would be useless. Just make sure your SYSTEM is W7 compatible. So basically the only thing on the recovery disc is gonna be windows vista and the drivers? There aren't  gonna be any other files on it that I would need?I don't know what was on the recovery disc, but if you are upgrading to a different OS there was nothing on it you need.Awesome thanks I figured Sony will probably CHARGE me quite a bit for a recovery disc and if I'm gonna spend the money I might as well spend it upgrading to windows 7Just CHECK here first: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-advisor.aspxJust download a vista/ windows 7 recovery disc from easyBCD websiteIgnore the above post.

Solve : Issue with running old games on Virtual PC?

Answer»

So, i figured this new trick to make run my old games with virtual PC. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit and using Virtual PC 2007 (with installed Windows 3.11). I set the 64 MB of RAM memory reserved for my virtual MACHINE, but when I try to run the game, it says that it doesn't have enough free memory.

Same THING happens on my XP when trying to run another game (same windows, same amount of memory on Virtual PC). Any HELP?  What game.Virtual machine doesn't want to start, or the game itself?
Is this the message?
The virtual machine could not be started because there was not enough memory available on the host.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't DosBox be able to play Windiws 3.1 games? It sure will...Tada! no need for VIrtualBoxD-Fend is even better: http://www.smartestcomputing.us.com/topic/39445-play-dos-games-in-xp-vista-and-windows-7/

Broni, virtual machine starts fine, its the game that won't start

But then there's another problem. When trying to install a windows-based game, I also get that i don't have enough free memory (this time on windows 98 with 128 MB of RAM). Says that it requires 8 MB and that I have only 1

The game is SimTown, just to let u know

Tnx for DOSBox, done the trick Cool Glad I could help

Solve : Laptop to laptop?

Answer»

Toshiba laptop screen shattered; have OLDER GATEWAY laptop (both use XP).  Is there any way I can use the Gateway to display the Toshiba desktop and access the Toshiba files?  I have tried with a double VGA (pins on both ends) but that isn't working.  Would appreciate any suggestions.Buy an external USB HD enclosure.
You remove a drive from a laptop.
Put it in the enclosure.
Plug the USB cable into any working computer.

Search for USB drive enclosure on your FAVORITE search site.
Your best bet will be to use an external monitor on the Toshiba.  A standard VGA cable will work for that connection.  If money is a PROBLEM, check out some pawn shops.  I've seen some 15" flat screen monitors for $30.

I'm guessing the Toshiba has a faster processor, and probably more RAM,  than the Gateway since you describe the Gateway as old.

Laptop monitors were just not designed to be USED as external monitors.

Solve : Which ISP speed is best for me??

Answer»

Hello Forum. I am attempting to move from dial up(don't laugh)to a higher speed ISP.
I have a Dell Dimension with a 2.4 GB Celeron processor, 768 MB RAM, running Windows XP SP3 with an Intel Graphics controller.  I need to go on line for news videos , download tax forms, bank statements, pay bills , send and receive email. I may be cancelling my Comcast TV plan in November and may be relying solely on my computer for news , either in video or text form as well as the other things I do on line. What download speed would I absolutely need to buy.   I have looked around and have seen many plans and all have little gimmicks attached. Bundles with TV, internet ,phone etc. I was thinking of getting Verizon's 3Mbps/768Kbps DSL for 29.95/mo. It has a 20.00 shipping and activation fee for the modem. They also say "WiFi INCLUDED". Is that a router?   Would this DSL plan be OK for what I plan do do on line. Would it be fast enough for my needs. Would the videos show properly without all the "buffering" pauses that I see with dial up?. I long ago stopped using my NetZero dial up except for text pages. Any advice about what I need would be appreciated.    Thanks WIRELESS internet is what they mean by WiFi. So I think they offer both wired and wireless options in the package (so you can go wired or wireless whenever you feel like it).

3Mbps that should be good for watching videos without you having to wait for buffering to complete before the next part of the video will play..

Thanks for your help. Verizon requires a 1 year commitment for this plan and I did not want to be disappointed with the speed and have to pay for opting out of the plan. If 3Mbps/768Kbps would not be fast enough I would go to a higher speed plan.  Check also for some people(neighbors, friends) you know or knew using same or other ISP to avoid such disappointment. It's always worth having a little information on people not just on paper or advertisement. Most of my neighbors bought into the Comcast high speed internet plans. I would consider it but I am not sure that I need the highest speeds. And the price is almost double the Verizon DSL price. I won't make a move until 8-15-10 since my neighbor let me use his Comcast high speed connection off of his router which is next DOOR to me and within range. The neighbor is leaving the area on 8-31 and I will make the move before then for that reason.  Guess I got used to the higher speed and can not go back to dial up. I'm sure that GOING elsewhere to live is bound to have another internet connection when you bought your PC with you to suffice your transactions and custom needs. Having aware of both a dial-up and a DSL connection(you have already use) comparison will surely give you a LINK or idea of satisfaction and expectation.
Good Luck. you might give Charter a look.

I don't know how much it costs for charter but my former roomate had already subscribed to it when I moved in and he let me use his connection off a router.

And the service was very good. It also has wireless networking available.I would also recommend increasing your RAM by as much as you can afford, or your mother board will support.

Also, double check that the Verizon plan isn't really a two year agreement that the cost doubles in the second year.  That's their standard plan where I live.  And it's in the really fine print.you want high speed internet if you're still used to using a landline phone. It allows the phone to work 24/7.In my area world call provide better services. The least expensive broadband service I am aware of is AT&T DSL, $20/mo, no contract, no telephone service required.  In some areas the introductory rate is $14.95/mo for 12 months. I am using the AT&T $19.95 / month service right now. It's reliable but it's only 768/384 speeds for this price, which is not good enough if you want to watch streaming videos without buffering (the HD or HQ vid's particularly). It beats dialup by a whole lot though.

But then again, DSL extreme may be cheaper??? For $29.95, I can get their internet service which they say you get 3-6mb download speed and 512-768 upload speed. And I see they have month to month contract options, so you can go one month at a time instead of being hacked up 1 yr.

Solve : My life as a spyware developer?

Personally, I'd much RATHER WORK at a retail store or something then a spyware company. In fact that's a TALE of it's own since I be working for a company that was either very shifty or very *censored*. I suspected a bit of both and declined their "offer" which had the ADDITIONAL curiousity of me getting paid "under the table"... red flags right there. Don't even want to know what they did.

Apparently it is legal. But they did put up a message about a lawsuit.

The only recent information I found was here:

What was this about?
Curious minds need to know!

what!?!  I'm not from USA, but I fail to see why this should be illegal.  The site is a search engine t of find torrents

Torrents are not illegal, in fact they are a pretty good way to share files over the web, except for certain ISP's who feel the need to squash the bandwidth.

It's the content that's problematic, and possibly illegal, but ISOHunt is not storing any files on their machine (that I know of), they are simply providing

Try doing a google search for "inurl:paste-it.net visa".  Can google be blamed for this? Quote from: BradDet on August 02, 2010, 02:12:54 PM

It's clearly for searching for illegal content.

I mean, you have sites called ISO hunt (legal ISOs? yeah right, sure they exist, but clearly that's not what it's designed for) thepiratebay (golly gee we didn't intend for it to be used for pirated content!) and all sorts of other sites. The fact is, if they are, as you said, search engines. but people upload these torrents from their own PCs and it would make sense that, if these sites were actually trying to remain legal, to actually filter those torrents.

The WHOLE "well it's just searching for the torrent files not the actual copyright DATA" is simply a level of indirection intended to circumvent the law regarding the issue.

A Torrent, the protocol itself, and the contents of the file, aren't illegal. But to compare these torrent search engines to google is a bit NAIVE. These torrent search engines are quite clearly designed to return hits for illegal torrents, and there is very little that the administrators do to prevent it, which makes them guilty of "conspiracy to commit criminal copyright infringement" (in the U.S, at the very least, anyway).

the reason people believe that having torrents that point to copyright data do not subject Torrent search engines to secondary copyright liability is because of a Case files by Universal Studio's against Sony, in which they claim a "precedent" was set:

Quote
the Supreme Court found that Sony's new product, the Betamax (the first mass-market consumer videocassette recorder), did not subject Sony to secondary copyright liability because it was capable of substantial non-infringing uses. Decades later, this case became the jumping-off point for all peer-to-peer copyright infringement litigation.

However, One has to realize that this actually doesn't set any sort of precedent- the Betamax was a physical device, it's use for illegal activity put the maker at legal odds no more then smith & wesson are held responsible for violence and deaths relating to use and misuse of their weapons.

What a Torrent Site would be akin to in this analogy is a weapon manufacturer that provided instructions on the best ways to kill people and commit crimes with their products. Now, not strictly illegal, but the intent is clear- these weapons are designed for commiting crimes. If such a weapon manufacturer existed and their weapons were used in a murder, they would be guilty of conspiracy to commit murder just as much as an accomplice would.

torrents pointing to copyrighted stuff is like somebody helping commit a crime isn't it? Quote

So what if there were 3 differnt parties involved

1) The torrent search engine (weapon manufacturer)
2) Someone seeding the torrent (ie: another guy giving insturctions on how to murder people using the weapons)
3) The person downloading the torrent (ie: the guy who actually commits the murder)

Is #1 as guitly as #2?.  I would think #3 is the guilty person and #2 is the accomplice, but I'm still not convinced #1 did anything wrong.

And they are many legal ISO's.  Most linux distrubtions are available for download as a legal ISO, and some from torrents too. Quote from: BradDet on August 03, 2010, 02:00:00 PM

#1 is as guilty as #2 simply because they are intentionally for use with copyright products. People *censored* and complain and say "but it's not illegal" all the while using sites called "thepiratebay" and "ISOhunt" and others clearly intended to distribute copyright material. Your analogy is wrong because #2 is essentially leaving their instructions with #1, and #1 essentially CLAIMS "it's not our problem" despite the fact that the instructions are stored on their servers. Apparently the concept of approving each entry is not feasible, (as they claim, "there is no way to make sure everything posted is legal" complete bs and they know it.

Quote
And they are many legal ISO's.  Most linux distrubtions are available for download as a legal ISO, and some from torrents too.
That has nothing to do with this. Sure, there are plenty of legal ISOs. but the vast majority exist as imaged copyright software. It's sort of like RAR files. the compression itself and the file format are perfectly benign but because of the higher compression ratio RAR is almost exclusively used for distributing illegal content. It doesn't make RAR illegal, of course, but that's hardly the position that a torrent search engine has.

"we're just a search engine, we aren't responsible for any of our content or what our results give back" Is the common defense tactic. It's flawed. First, they are entirely responsible for what results come back. It's not the same as a google search engine; google indexes pages and URLs by keywords. a torrent search site not only indexes the torrent contents themselves but almost always keeps a active torrent tracker; so while it's playing a man in the middle position it's right there in the fray. Perhaps you are judging the book by it's cover?

I could create a website called '*adult URL*' (I haven't tried that site, not suggesting you visit it).

Doesn't mean it's intended to contain porn.

It would seem to me it is censorship to prevent the system for listing certain content just because it maybe used for illegal purposes.

Even if you don't want to call it a 'search engine'. It is a search "tool".  And it's sad that so many people use this tool for illegal purposes, but I don't pretend to make assumptions about the intent behind the idea of the site or the name without evidence.

So for example, if there was a memo from the president to the employees saying, 'hey were a site that makes money by letting others illegally exchange material such as movies'.  Then I would agreeThanks to BC for having r identified the key issues.
It is not if you think you can evade the law..
The REAL issue is if you really break the law.
Knowingly aiding a criminal in a crime is wrong!
Like if you drove the getaway car.

And it is not just a word game, what titles to use and all that.

Example:
Amazon.com: 101 Ways to Kill Your Boss (9780452290051)
It is a legal book.
And look here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDe7pvx8phk
No judge is going to indict Amazon, Google or the author of the Book. Even though the title sounds very bad.
But the content is very  -> it still is a problem if a website with legal intents can be used illegally isn't it?
The confusion comes from the way we understand legal terms written in English and Legalese, which are 2 different thingsDoing some more research, it seems the following is the best summary of the issue:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IsoHunt
It was on July 4 that ISO Hunt changed the main page. Elsewhere on the site you can still find some links. They say that they are going to remake the site to compy with the current interpretation of the law.

Somewhat related to this, Bit Torrent is looking for people to work in San Francisco.

To grasp the scope of all this, read the like above.
Quote
According to isoHunt, the total amount of shared content was more than 10.01 petabytes as of November 22, 2009 ...
This is not a few guys working in the  garage.I'm afraid I still don't 'get it'

How does Amazon selling a book on 101 Ways to kill your Boss differ in any way from isoHunt returning a torrent link to say the Astroboy movie?

Also, I can totally search google and find similar content

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22Astroboy%22+Last-modified+avi+OR+mov+OR+mpg+OR+mpeg+OR+mp4+%22intitle%3Aindex+of+%22+-inurl%3Ahtm+-inurl%3Ahtml

I would like to understand more why the technology employed by isoHunt differs legally from the way google does it.

Napster for example ran into problems because (it is my understanding) that content was actually stored on their site and passed through their networks, so their service was supporting illegal activity.

And just be clear, I'm not suggesting that isoHunt isn't fully aware their search engine is used for mainly illegal purposes, or even that they are capitalizing on that illegal use, but that' a bit different from saying they setup the site with the intent of it being used illegally.  Perhaps they did - I don't know, I haven't seen evidence either way.

Now explain why? We all now 7 is better.  I would take NEITHER because if I'm GETTING them for FREE they are clearly stolen. If it were legit, I would go with Option A. Technically 7 is a Vista distro.

technically no it's not. it's Windows 7. Windows doesn't have "distributions" because a "distribution" is a set of various publicly available components; Linux distributions combine kernel, UI desktop, and applications. many distributions use the same kernel but different DESKTOPS, and many Distros use different kernels but the same desktops, and so on and so forth. The fact is nothing in windows is "mixed and matched" into a distro. The Kernel and UI are both entirely different in 7 from what they were from Vista just as Windows XP's kernel and User interface were different from windows 2000. a Distribution implies a branch-like architecture. Windows 7 has been a straight line from NT 3.1 to 7.Oh really? Looks like I have been misinformed.... But Wasn't 7 built off Vista? Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 31, 2010, 11:11:25 PM

I thought that everything from 2000 - Windows 7 uses the NT kernal....Are there different versions of the NT kernal ?  How does this brake down, exactly ?Depends entirely on the rest of the specifications and what actual processor and RAM is in them.

Definately install Linux, but you would have buy a license for 7.  If you went with the lower end hardware, you'd have 7, but upgrading the hardware would be more expensive.. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 31, 2010, 11:20:28 PM

Thanks for your answers guys, was just curious. And Also, the GUI was kind of taken from vista but everything else is entirely different. This is why its faster/better etc. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 31, 2010, 11:20:28 PM
Oh really? Looks like I have been misinformed.... But Wasn't 7 built off Vista?
Of course 7 (NT 6.1) was a later version of Vista (6.0). Vista was a later version of XP (5.1). XP was a later version of 2000(5.0), 2000 was a later version of NT4, etc.

But that's the thing. Ubuntu 10.04 isn't regarded as a distro of Ubuntu 9.04, just because it's a later version. Ubuntu, Slackware, Fedora, Mepis,  KUbuntu, Mint, etc are Distributions of Linux. They aren't different Versions of Linux insomuch as they are completely different Operating Systems based on Linux.

don t know enough about computors to answer that , thats why i m on this site , tryin to learn a few things ..lolEh, I might choose computer B and just add memory.  Bringing it up to 4GB would probably cost a good bit less than buying Win 7 for computer A.  But, I'd probably also want more details about the processors before deciding.

Solve : Bloger help?

Answer»

I just go a google e mail so I caould joind Blooger.com

Now wen I go to Bloger.com  they WANT your google address.

I remember everything but what my google e mail address is.

Can I have google e mail me my information again? It's the username you typed in when you created your account. If you have FIREFOX this link will show you your gmail address in the upper right hand corner.  This link doesn't work in IE, although IE may have something similar.

http://www.google.com/firefox?client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:officialThanks for thee help.

But my usename is  my Verizon e mail shoud it not have  google.com   at the end??Use WHATEVER email you used to register. The context for gmail is "username"gmail.com.Well I can tell you my e mail because it is my work e mail.

[email protected]

And this is the e mail I used to register at google.

So are you telling me my google e mail is
[email protected]Is there something preventing you from trying either?well   [email protected]  wont work  I tryed e mailing my self.

And I did register with  [email protected]  but my gmail wont be
[email protected]gmail.comThen it will just be [email protected]

Do not add "gmail.com" at the end.So my google e mil is   [email protected]   then why get a google e mail?
Like yahoo is  [email protected]How could that be your Google email? Google has nothing to do with Verizon (I think).

Try to LOGIN to Google with "thebrain900" as a username.Or just TRY different combinations. Is that so hard?

Try the following:

thebrain900
[email protected]This is what I ment.

Everything is now working I login to google with my  verizon e mail  the one I had for work  and joioned  google with.

And google let me in what I need to know is  OK so I have a google e mail now   so if I want to give it to someone  I do not give them my verizon e mail I give them the google e mail I joined for.

So what is my new google e mail?

Wen I joned google to get a google e mail I used my work e mail   [email protected]
Then it TOLD me to pick a password and I did.

Wen it was over it told me check my e mail at verizon to get the e mail from google teling me it all went through.

And I did but I never picked what I want my google e mail to be???Check the email Google sent.

Solve : http 500 internal server error?

Answer»

Hi all

A bit of background first: I paid £4.5k to do an IT course and the company (Advent computer training) WENT bust before I really started and I'm trying to get my money back along with a lot of other people. One of those people has set up a website to help everyone else with information and advice http://adventstudents.webs.com/

I used to be able to go to this site no problem but now when I try I have to wait for ages whilst it is 'loading' and then I get a 'HTTP 500 - internal server error' (I've tried FIREFOX and IE7 and both do the same thing) however, when I use a proxy server the site LOADS as normal

It's ironic that if I had done the course I might know what the problem was but as I haven't can anyone explain to me what's going on and/or how to fix it.

I'm using an

Acer
Aspire X1301
AMD Athlon II X2 215 Processor 2.70 GHz
3.00 GB RAM
Windows 7 home Premium 64-bit

Thanking you in advance for any help
That error usually means the problem is with the website itself. Try changing your IP address, if your ISP allows it.
Use the first option here: http://whatismyipaddress.com/change-ipWebsite working fine here.

Ok, I just installed firefox add-on TOR button and I can go to the website no problem now.So the website is filtering out either your own ip address or else the RANGE of addresses in which it falls, WHETHER by ISP or country or whatever. Any idea why it might be doing that?
Well it was doing it to Virgin customers, from what I understand, but that's been cleared up now. I'm a Sky customer but no-one else seems to have a problem so that rules out ISP. I'm English, live in Egland and the person who built the website is English and most of the people who use the site are English so that rules out country (don't know where the website is hosted but obviously other people here can access it)

I guess it must be filtering my IP but I have absolutely no idea why. I've not been banned from the website because when I do load the page, using the TOR button, I can still sign in.

Curiouser and curiouser!

Unless it's filtering a very narrow range of IP addresses. Are IP's tied to location in the same way landline phone numbers are?

Don't know if you can see my IP on my posts but IP on my original post was' blah.blah.blah.53' and now is 'same.same.same.21' Quote from: planetoidalee on July 26, 2010, 06:26:24 AM

Solve : SQL Express 2005 disabling xp_cmdshell?

Answer»

I need to disable xp_cmdshell in SQL Express Edition 2005. I thought it was disabled because I don't have the option to enable it "checked" on. That is the only setting I see (one check box to enable xp_cmdshell) within SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration (for features).

Only information I can find for xp_cmdshell if for SQL 2000, none of the command prompt commands work.
I have also tried removing the xplog70.dll file, since I read that is supposeably the associated DLL file for xp_cmdshell, but my vulnerability scanner still reports a finding.

I'm not to handy with SQL; I guess I don't have a lot of the features because it is SQL Express (the free version).

Here is what the finding TELLS me to do...
Disable the XP_CMDSHELL procedure using the sp_dropprocedure store procedure or REMOVE the associated loading .DLL from SQL's loaded library.

I guess my questions are this...
What are all the associated files with xp_cmdshell (SQL 2005 only please)?
How do I  utilize sp_dropprocedure within SQL 2005 Express?
How do I permanently disable this without disrupting other aspects of SQL?
Found this script that HELPS secure SQL
Run it from the SQL command prompt (SQLCMD.EXE)

use master
exec sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_cmdshell'
exec sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_enumgroups'

exec sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_regenumvalues'
exec sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_regremovemultistring'
exec sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_regwrite'
drop procedure sp_makewebtask
GO

I actually didn't run the use master command...you can run these commands one at a time or all together, ex. below....
1>exec sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_cmdshell'
2>exec sp_dropextendedproc 'xp_loginconfig'
3>go

You can try to print out a report and see whether there is some bad codes. The phone is connected right;however, the manual doesn't show or tell how to CONNECT the fax, the caller id, and the answering machine.  I have re routed a few things and just need to see if an oncoming fax will come in.I haven't used a fax/modem/phone switch for years, so I can't recommend a specific brand or model, but I have used them in the past.  It may be something you might LOOK at.

One example.

http://www.amazon.com/ComSwitch-Telephone-Sharing-System-Switch/dp/B0000YE3Q8

An incoming fax has a specific ID that the switch uses to route the call to the fax machine instead of the phone.

Does your phone or fax machine not have caller ID?  Do you really need a separate caller ID box?

Solve : Open Office 3.2.1 ISO images?

Open Office 3.2.1 ISO images are available. Free, of course.

CD-ROM ISO Images
The standard ISO images are available for normal download through the following 4 links:
Windows®
Linux
Mac OS®
Solaris®

You also need a current JRE package for your OS.

Do you agree that Open Office is as good as the MS product for general use? What's the point of getting an ISO image for Open Office?  Why not just download the .exe file?

Do you agree that Open Office is as good as the MS product for general use?
Maybe.  What, exactly, is "general use"?  It really depends on the user's needs.  But, yes, it is probably quite adequate for many users.

However, if you're implying that Open Office is absolutely as good as the MS product, I do not agree.  If you go into the office environment the vast majority of businesses (let's say any business with annual sales exceeding $5 million), what Office package do you think you'll see on their computers?  If you truly don't know the answer to that, I can tell it is MS Office.  Since business seeks to minimize costs and maximize profits, they'd be using Open Office if it truly served their needs as well as MS Office.  Also, many companies employ VBA to create entire applications within Word, Excel, or Access, depending on what functions the "application" needs.
I have to agree with Soybean. There's just no need as far as I can see for ISO images.

In a community college it would make a lot of sense. The ISO has extra stuff, like documentation. Give each student a CD and let them INSTALL it.

Of course, the naked installer is a quick download.

BTW, from version 3 on Open Office has MS run time stuff built into it. Like VBA and some things of C++ run time. (Should I say RUM time?) Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 20, 2010, 10:41:30 AM
BTW, from version 3 on Open Office has MS run time stuff built into it. Like VBA

It doens't have VBA, it has a VBA knockoff, OpenOffice.Org Basic. It's not necessarily less useful then the VBA editor, but you certainly aren't going to be able to create entire projects with it like you can with VBA.

IMO it's really more on par with WordBASIC or AccessBASIC.Your opion is important.
Word Basic is still alive and can be a surrogate for VBA.
WordBasic Lives!
By Dan Mabbutt, About.com Guide to Visual Basic

So by making a comparison to Word Basic, your are saying it has some value for a segment of the general users. Right?

Considering that it is free, it is of value to those who must serve a number of workstations on a limited budget. Flor example, schools in the inner cities.

It's not "alive". and VBA acts as a surrogate for it. it's no longer a separate language as it was in Word versions prior to 97, but rather a Object that you access via VBA.

Second: the quoted source author is clearly biased, making constant references to VB6:

Quote
That turkey was obsolete in 1997 when it was replaced by VBA. (Which, in turn, is the last little sniglet of VB6 Microsoft has left hanging around.)

Quote
So, the question occurs to me, "Why is Microsoft so kind and understanding to their Office macro languages users when they throw VB6 programmers out in the cold to freeze and starve?"

I'm not going to get into the .NET argument because my OPINION is a rather ambivalent one depending on perspective, but clearly he must understand that languages are developed and die. How many programmers used to use Pascal on a daily basis? How many do now? that type of thing. some of those programmers essentially retired, but the rest adapted and actually learned another language.

WordBASIC is not supported at all by any version of Word after word 97. Word 2000 and up will open a Word DOCUMENT that contains wordbasic macros, but they are converted to VBA macros that reference the WordBASIC object.

Go ahead. try it. can you create a macro in Word 2007 that simply states

Code: [Select]Bold 1
to bold a character? No? then it's not wordBASIC.

All that is left of wordBASIC are a few COMPATIBILITY objects that emulate the various functions. the various unique syntax is gone. Same with AccessBASIC.

Yes. I never stated otherwise.

Not arguing with you there.  My original point is that it is not like VBA, except in the way it is available in multiple applications.

Solve : PC maxed out and a horrible mess!?

Answer»

Hello.  I had a PC built for me by a co-worker 3 yrs ago.  I play some games like Sims 3 but nothing hardcore.  I do like to have 10+ internet tabs open at a time though & sometimes I have like 7 PROGRAMS running at once.    I also use my computer to watch movies on my TV.

Specs
Windows XP Home 5.1 SP3
Asus P5WD2 Premium motherboard
XFX GeForce 8600 GT XXX 600M 256MB GDDR3 PCI Express Video Card
OCZ 2GB Kit DDR2 PC2-6400 4-4-4 Platinum Revision 2 Dual Channel (I actually have another kit that never worked I just never got around to sending it in for a replacement)
2- Maxtor 320GB(640GB total) Serial ATA/300 16MB Buffer 7200RPM
Intel Premium 4 CPU 3.20 GHz
Antec Super LanBoy Aluminum Tower W/ 550w Fatality power supply
plextor px-716a AND HP 840 lightscribe

I think that's all the important stuff, if not let me know what I missed.  I only have 16GB of space left between the 4 separate allocated hard drives & it is a complete mess of crap!  I have tried going through it but get frustrated really quickly because there seems to be multiple copies of everything between the 4 hard drives.  I want to start fresh again but have LOTS of things I do want to keep, trouble is I no longer have any kind computer literate friends to help me.  I was thinking I should buy an external DRIVE and then send all the stuff I want to keep to that then reformat the computer, sound about right?  He had Windows on it's own 127GB drive so that it would be protected if something happened with the other drives, should I do that again & is there any need to have 127GB JUST for windows (I think not)?

What should I upgrade?  Who should I have upgrade it for me?  Where/how do you find people that do computer work?  I could manage SOMETHINGS, like I replaced the power supply, I can pop cd drives in & out, memory sticks & video cards.  I have never touched motherboards, CPUs or harddrives but I am a fairly capable fast learner...if someone holds my hand.

Thank you for any help you can provide! Quote from: myswtsins on July 20, 2010, 05:47:25 PM

Maybe I'm missing something:  2 hard drives or 4?
a)  If 2 internal drives this sounds like a good idea.I have 2 physical hard drives but for some reason he separated it into 4 drives, I have a C:, F: G: & H: hardrive listed under my computer. Quote from: myswtsins on July 20, 2010, 06:46:23 PM

2 physical drives partitioned into 2 logical drives, each = 4 logical drives.
Analogy:
2 file cabinets with 2 file drawers, each = 4 file drawers

Just a way to organize files to make it easier to find them, i.e. OS on C, data on F, downloads on G, etc.Given your statement "& it is a complete mess of crap!  " i think "crap" removal ought to be high on your agenda. A relatively easy way to accomplish that task is to start-search-all files and folders-what size is it (at this point remove the zero and insert 5000 which translates to 5 MB). That is just an arbitrary file size you can make it as you wish. Then begin your search. When complete go through the resultant list and lop heads. I recently did this on one of our computers and with little effort brought it down from 1024 to 309.truenorth

Solve : Shopping for a Region-Free Portable DVD Player?

Answer»

We live in Japan and in addition to a new laptop, I'm looking to buy a portable region-FREE DVD player for my 2 young kids to use at home and while traveling.  I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions for me regarding what to get.

Here's some information:

*I don't want to spend more than $100 (including shipping if possible)
*they are expensive in Japan -- buying them abroad can be worse with the cost of shipping
*however, will be meeting a family member coming from Canada next month and COULD have an item shipped to that person's house so they could bring it to us in their carry-on baggage
*a small screen size (7") is fine because it is for travel, while at home can be hooked up to a TV
*battery LIFE is important - would like 4 hours or more if possible or else be able to use an extra battery

If anyone has experience with these portable players, I appreciate any suggestions.Simple answer is "No, you can't do hat".
Japan is ZONE 2. USA is Zone 1.

Equipment that is usable in many places is very pricey.
Best place to buy that sort of thing  on one of the French islands in the Caribbean. Like maybe San Martin. If that budget is a bit elastic, the region free 7 inch Philips PET 714B is $109.11 from Amazon. Only 2 hr (BUILT in) battery life. The 4 hr battery life requirement is not really compatible with a low price right now, although that could change.

Solve : Advice on purchase of audio book player device?

Answer»

I'm currently using a portable CD player for my audio books, but find that when I'm at the GYM on treadmill, bicycle, etc., that it's too large & awkward.  I'm wanting to find something that's very basic, very simple and all I care about it doing is letting me listen to audio books.  I would like to find the least EXPENSIVE device that will accomplish this.  Does anyone have any recommendations?  Thanks.  kThere are these things called "mp3 players". I use mine for listening to audio books.
I've got a SanDisk MP3 player that runs on a AAA BATTERY (no charger needed, batteries available anywhere)  and it's not much bigger than the battery.  I use it mostly for music, but it also does audio books.

It came with an arm strap to hold it that's really HANDY when exercising or running.

There are a number of programs to convert cassette tapes to MP3 files.I have a Sandisk Sansa mp3 player. I can listen to audiobooks on it. It does though need a charger to CHARGE the battery but it is doing fine. I bought the 2gb version (which is cheapest) but you can always buy the sandisk memory card to increase space if you need it.

Solve : right click save as box?

Answer»

Yesterday I had a problem with my right click save as box disappearing. I thought I had found the answer with the help of SOMEONE on hear but TODAY it did it again. I further checked with another help site and found that if you USE Firefox and installed the Yahoo tool bar your in trouble with this. For some reason the Yahoo bar messes with it. I uninstalled the tool bar and now it works great. Can you give an example?  Otherwise, your post isn't very helpful, or not helpful at all. To make it simple, you right click to bring up the save as box  to down load pictures or articles from the web. Apparently you may not use itPictures and articles would WORK differently, so let's talk about pictures/images for now.  If you right click on an image on a web page, using Firefox, you have the option to Save Image As, or you should have.  Do you not have that?I do now after taking out the Yahoo add on tool bar. That is the problem. I looked on another site and was told by 3 people this was the problem and it was.
OK, so problem has been RESOLVED.  Thanks for the info.

Solve : Random phone call from a technician?

Answer»

Just wondering if what this guy was telling me was true.   First off he asked if he had the right address, which he did and told me my IP, he said he was looking at connections in the area and my connection is slow.   I know I don't have to give him any info and I knew he was PART of nothing I am signed up to, but it did MAKE me think for a while, especially after the call when he sounded to me a little annoyed and didn't say bye.
He wanted to charge £55 and hour to get someone over here and fix my connection and I told him I would get in contact with him if I felt my connection was bad enough, told me to google them "coordinatur assist", couldn't find it but anywho, now he has CONFIRMATION of my IP and telephone NUMBER and that I sounded willing to pay money to get someone over here......  And with him sounded a bit fed up. put 2 and 2 together.. it gives someone an actual reason to attack my computer...  I know theres point really thinking about it, it's not something I'd loose sleep over lol.
Anyway, that's my story I wanted to share and heres what he told me to do:

run eventvwr.msc
click Application on the left, click the type heading
Count how many ERRORS I have which I have somewhere around 20 to 30 of them (how bad that is I don't know?) .  He told me to delete them by right clicking an error and selecting the delete option.   There is no delete option?
He said he needed to send someone over "before my computer becomes completely unusable"
He's having me on right?   There never was a delete option was there?....................    or am I really actually in trouble?
My computer is quite slow but it's bearable for what I use it for, I don't really see there being a big issue, just takes a year or two to boot the thing up, and firefox takes forever to start up, but apart from that........ I don't knowProbably a scam...do NOT give him any more info.
Call your ISP and see if they actually do this...my guess is they DON'T..

I'd also make a Police report.Another scam I read about in the newspaper is to ring you up & tell you that your computer has a "virus". It's a scam that's been happening in the UK for a couple of years now. Also known as "Support on Click" scam. Google it.

I thought so, I gave quite a few bit's of detail away actually now I think about it  proves there is such thing as being too friendly.

But I do want to know if there was any truth in what he said about those errors, I just counted them up and theres 42 errors in the event viewer and 16 warnings.
Is this something I have to fix?
Thanks

I'm using Windows XP homeEverybody's Event Viewer has loads of errors and warnings. That's why the scammers make you look there. If your system is running fine just carry on. Most (or all) of the event log entries relate to small things that don't matter.

It's a world wide thing, as this report from Australia shows...

Quote

Windows Event Viewer phishing scam remains active

[...]

Event Viewer maintains logs about program, security, and system events on Windows and, according to Microsoft, can be used to view and manage the event logs, gather information about hardware and software problems, and monitor Windows security events.

The system logs in Event Viewer display prominent "Error" icons, which often relate to trivial matters like the failure of a process to start, but could be used by a scammer to convince someone their computer needs "fixing" by running a script.

Solve : I hate you printer?

Hi, I have a Canon iP6700D printer. It is ok, except for the fact that now it's giving me a U041 message: "Ink has run out. REPLACE the ink tank and close the cover."
Well I checked the ink, it's fine! there's plenty!

The problem is that the printer won't let me print until I replace the cartridges.

Anyways I'm not buying new cartridges when I don't have to. I want to override this "ink check" feature anyway I can, stop it from checking the ink levels.

How can I do this? So, those cartridges are transparent, right?  How much ink do see there?

I don't know how you're going to get AROUND that error message.  ACTUALLY, I suspect you're not going to be able to bypass it.  But, see whether this may apply to your model printer: http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/inkjet/52198Does this printer have a micro chip on it? Actually you do have alternatives to replacing the cartridges with Canon replacement cartridges. The options include;
1.Taking your current cartridges to a refilling station.
2.If your current cartridges are refillable you can also perform the procedure yourself.
3.If they can be refilled you will need a "chip re-setter" before they can be used again (if there is a micro chip) (the refilling station will also do this before handing them back to you).
4.Generally there are places to buy replacement cartridges that will allow refilling without re setting or will allow refilling with resetting. Options in this area are very printer specific.
I have a very reliable trustworthy source that can tell you what options are available for that particular printer. They are a commercial enterprise in the U.S. in the state of Georgia. I have no vested interest in them other than a repeat satisfied customer who feels safe in recommending them to others. If you desire to contact them PM me and i will provide the contact details. truenorthhey

Solve : MY PC HAS GONE TOTALY NUTS!!!!!!!?

Hi.

My PC has just gone too far!

I installed a new theme for vista 2 nights before and when i did, it worked.

But when i went to turn on my laptop on normal mode the next morning, it wouldn't START up. it just kept saying "please wait" OVER and OVER AGAIN.

I even tried to use the startup repair program from my backup disk i made before but it says that there is a device connected which is my mouse. BUT the only problem with that is...my touchpad doesn't work. i found out that the driver wasn't installed.

So, i went onto safe mode with networking (internet) and i downloaded and installed the driver from synaptics. when i did i went to enable it...but it woundn't let me!

I even tried uninstalling and changing the theme but it won't let me do that either!

So now that these ways don't work, i just DONT KNOW what to do anymore!!

I even dont have the TOSHIBA Recovery disk creator anymore.

I am begging for anyone who can HELP me with this. i just want my laptop to work correctly again.

Matt.

Go to safe mode and do a system restore to before you installed the "theme".

Sorry guy's im new to the FORUM so I figured Id post here, if there's a better place for this post let me know and I'll move it. The dell studio xps 16 has a very flat and unique keyboard design, it's slippery, and dell doesnt actually sell one that fits it. any suggestions on where to find one that would fit a dell studio xps 16 keyboard snuggly? and not slip off. also looking for a nice case to carry it in. it's a 15.6 inch screen. I NEED a nice reliable one as Dell doesn't build the casing to these LAPTOPS very rugged. It actually is really easy to FALL apart. :/ Also I was wondering if a bluetooth card is something worth upgrading? I've never actually thought about it before. But will a newere bluetooth card speed up performance at all? Or is it still all dependent on my network speed?
Thanks for suggestions and help it's much appreciated!

Solve : send email to grandson?

Answer»

My grandson, who is 8, does not have his own email address/account.  I'd like to send him emails, etc., but I want his parents to know ahead of time that it's for him.  I've tried to get Yahoo! to answer this, but they don't seem to be able to understand what I want to do and keep SENDING incorrect responses.  I've added his name to my contacts list, then put his mother's email address.  When I type his name, it goes to that contact name, but the "to" line shows only his mother's email address, and not his name either in front of that address or behind it.  I know there's a way to do this as I've seen it before, but just can't figure it out.  Can anyone help?  THANKS much! What you are seeing prior to sending the email is on your computer. Have you tried to send an email and determine what the recipient sees as to the addressee? truenorthin yahoo mail, I can get the "To" field to show something like

Tom <[email protected]>

This is what you wanted?

But you can also say "Dear ____ and _______" in your message, where you put in the blanks that kid's name and his mom's name? Then they'll know the the kid should see the message too  I don't want the email to have to be opened (Dear _____ and _____) to see that it's for the grandson and not for them to have to worry with.  I want the "to" line to reflect that it's for the grandson, c/o their email address.  Am I making any sense at all?  I think that what I've seen before is something like you showed, i.e. [email protected]  Problem is, when I try to do that to send a card or something, it won't recognize it as a valid email address.  Thanks for your suggestions.Truenorth, no, I haven't tried that.  I'll give it a shot.  Thanks. So I went and checked yahoo mail. I am using yahoo mail too.

Did you put something in the "Nickname" box when you added the contact? (see the box right under the save BUTTON in the SCREENSHOT below).  That's how I get  John<[email protected]>  to work, which I think is what you wanted.

Okay, so I should put the grandson's name in the nickname box?  Should I also leave him as the contact?  I'm really sorry to be so tech ignorant, but I was born this way!  Thanx again. k

OK, I've put a nickname where indicated.

Also, sent an email (clicked on the g'son's contact) to his mother's address and asked her to let me know how it showed up there.

(two different techniques, not at the same time)hopefully that works. I tried sending to a test email from my yahoo mail to my gmail and it work fine. But I don't know if it would be showing up alright w ith other services (hotmail, msn, etc)

is grandson's mom also using yahoo mail to receive emails? No, I'm sending from Yahoo, but mother's email is gmail.  She got my test that I sent in just straight email form, but when I went to Hallmark and American Greetings to send a card,  it won't accept email address as valid.  Probably no way around that, huh?  Thanks again. That's because it is not a correct email address. The stuff is extra information added on by the client, and depending on the reciever, will be displayed by the client. It isn't actually part of the email address. For example, if you put someone's name infront of their house address, their address doesn't become John Do 77 Fake St, it's still 77 Fake St.  Thanks.  So that does mean that it's not "doable" at ecard sites? Most sites include a custom message option, where you can specify that it's for your grandson...otherwise, I think you're right.I know he's young, but is a separate gmail account for him out of the question?  Obviously, you would need to put filters and parental controls in place to be safe, but I've seen kids younger than 8 that knew how to use the basics of computers.

Some of them could barely read, but they knew icons.

Helpmeh probably already had his own email account by that age.Actually, I have to brag just a little ~ he was just tested & his IQ is 140!  Guess he could have figured this out for me, come to think of it!  However, that being said, his parents don't think it's necessary for him to have his own account.  They let him do certain things, with close supervision, but don't want him spending all his time on the computer, so limit what he can do.  Thanks for all the help yall have given on this!

Solve : Touch pad on an Acer Laptop (or maybe any laptop?)?

Answer»

Can someone answer a general question please.
Have got my hands on an Acer laptop for just a few days only, and it has the touch pad with the three buttons underneath (cor it's really weird, as l've always EVER been used to a mouse).
Now l move my finger gently over the touch pad to try and get the pointer over to certain icons on the desktop and as this passes over icons, either some get fired up or other programs that l've never even REQUESTED just start up.
It's driving me nuts!
Does this happen on all touchpads then?sounds like you just aren't used to the "Tap to click "functionality. if you are gentle then it might interpret you clicking and doubleclicking a lot as well.

You can disable tap to click and see if that helps. Thanks very much BC.
Googled it as l've never heard of that before and it was really interesting.
That could explain it all!
Blimey, glad l wasn't listening to music at the time. Couple of taps in time to the music and l could have deleted and restored the system before l even new it!!!!!!
Glad this was only a loan and is being returned. Will stick with ye OLD trusted mouse on my tower system.
Thanks again for the quick reply.
Regards

Ha ha, nice one ST.
Me a limey, oh geroff!
Just up the old apples and pairs now to the john cos the old ruby murray l've just had is causing a problem and i'm totally cream crackered
RegardsHi all,
Rightly or wrongly, suppose l'll keep it in this post as opposed to a totally new one.
BC - Your advice worked a treat. Touchpad is now brill!
ST - Cor blimey matey. A bit Desperate Dan here, so how's about the Dandy then or could l be a bit Beryl in Peril here? (ha ha).
Anyway, l digress so one last question.
This laptop is running Panda AV security. and a Panda Face appears on the bottom right of the taskbar. (fair enough) However, the panda face also appears on the bottom left of the taskbar too!
Don't need the double panda (!) and don't want to screw the laptop up too much as it is going back soon, thank god!
How do l get rid of the icons in the lower left of the taskbar or, move them over to the icons on the lower right.
I should know this but l've gone absolutely brain dead! Sorry!
Kind Regards
WTCIf it's in the area near your start button, that's the quick launch bar. simply right click the panda face there and choose delete. If you change your mind for whatever reason you can recover it from the recycle bin, but if it's in the quick launch it's probably just a shortcut for the AV program anyway. Thanks BC,
All sorted now.

Solve : nvidia geforce 8300 gs CODE 43?

Answer»

-Dell Inspiron 531 Athlon 64x2 4000+ (2.10 ghz)
-250 gb hard drive
-2 gb ram (came with one, I added the other)
-NVIDIA geforce 8300 gs
-windows 7 ultimate (came with vista, but someone uploaded 7 for me, don't have that cd)
-owned it for about 3 years, don't know much about computers.  hope these specs are enough.

So it all started about a week ago.  While checking my email, the screen went all black and the light on the keyboard went off, but the cpu was fine.  I manually shut it down and turned it back on.  I got a black screen with options -start windows in safe mode/sm+networking/normally etc- I chose normally.  the action center on the task bar said the video card failed  and basically I needed to update some driver.  I went to the nvidia website, and in fact, I did need an update.  After fixing everything, everything seemed normal.  problem gone, right?  wrong.  after a couple of days, I started my computer normally, and I didn't get my normal display.  I got these:

http://tinypic.com/r/256xr49/3
http://tinypic.com/r/sc7yb4/3

It seems like safe mode, except that with safe mode I get no background (up there you can see I get one, a crappy, corrupted one, but I get one) AND even if it is some sort of safe mode, I didn't promp it, which shouldnt happen, right?

When I got these, I rebooted and the computer started normally.  A couple days ago I got a windows update for nvidia, which I installed and before that, kapersky ran a scan. I checked online to see how bad a problem I had, and most help FORUMS suggest that the "fan needs to be cleaned".  So I turned off and unplugged everything.  I OPENED the cpu, and I cleaned the whole THING really.  Now I'm thinking I should have no further problems.

I start my computer and it starts normally.  The task bar and some icons load, and while waiting for the gadgets, boom.  Screen went black and the comp crashed on me.  this time I didn't touch it.  it rebooted by itself, and once again, I got the black screen with the options.  I chose to start normally.  Again it crashed, and this happened about five times.  I tried system restore.  I tried system repair with a repair disc. nothing. eventually I chose safe mode, logged on, shut down and went to sleep.

Next day, the computer starts normally except kapersky is going crazy. something about corrupted database.  after fixing that, the *censored* computer runs like nothing happened.  For about 5-6 hours.  first I only surfed the web.   after 6 hours, I decide to listen to wmp and at the same time use this program (sweethome3d) which is kinda heavy.  It was fine for about 10 minutes, the screen showed some black horizontal lines and blinking (as if a power outage was happening) and then the computer died.  I manually shut it down again, and chose to start it normally.  It started like in the pics above.

I decided to RESTART in safe mode.  I checked the device manager, and it said nvidia has code 43.  I uninstalled nvidia in safe mode.  I restart.  I get a weird windows, not corrupted, not safe mode, but I'm not really sure it's 7.  oversized icons, but images look fine.  kinda like vista. WELL, it loads and it automatically looks for nvidia.  it installs it and says that I need to restart the computer in order to complete the thing.  so I restart.  the log on screen looks like 7.  seems fine.  here's the problem.  I get taskbar.. and crash.  I tried the whole thing like 3 times now, and this happens over and over again.  plus, IDK why the taskbar's baby blue now (used to be gray, not that I care but might be important ?) .

right now I'm typing this from the vista-looking windows.  it just found the nvidia drive and I'm supposed to reboot now to complete the installation, but if it starts in normal mode it'll probably crash again.  besides, kapersky is running a full scan.  I have a drivers and utilities dell cd, an operating system [vista] cd, and the nvidia cd.  I just don't know what to do.  any help is greatly appreciated.

Are the fans on both the card and your CPU operating correctly ? ?
Thank you for the reply.

Yes.  and I cleaned both.   I also tried a file cleaner (NFR), deleted all the nvidia stuff, rebooted, reinstalled  the drive from the nvidia website in safe mode, and restarted in normal mode.  It worked fine the whole day yesterday until  I put it on sleep mode.  I resumed it hours later, but didn't respond.  I turned the cpu off and on.  It started normally, not like a crash.

Right now It's working semi fine.  I'm just concerned that it'll crash again if I run multiple programs at once.  I guess my video card is on its last legs.

1500.

Solve : How much can i get for this computer??

Spec's"

Intel Pentium 4 3.0Ghz
intel d915gav motherboard
1.5g ram
ATI radeon sapphire 9250 pci video card
2x 80g hard DRIVE sound blaster live! sb0060 sound card
Floppy drive
DVD drive
all run by WINDOWS Xp professional
with logitech trackman mouse and keyboard

With and optional 17 INCH lcd
Assuming it's all in working condition, decent monitor and the XP Pro key, I'd pay no more than £80 personally, £50 without the LCD.
If you were one of those people and sold it to someone who doesn't know much, you could probably get up to, maybe more than, £150. Quote from: Calum on July 14, 2010, 12:12:56 PM

Dont worry i do have a conscience. That would make to that kind of people? You got my meaning, yeah ... if you didn't have a conscience you could SELL it for £150 or so, heck you could get a lot more if you really went for it.
Without RIPPING anyone off, £100 is probably realistic to sell it to the average guy.75 Bucks...with the LCD.
