Solve : XP Install Issue? |
Answer» I have a dell dimension 4100, it did have 2k on it till a while ago since it had kept freezeing for some reason. The thing is that I put the disk in an it doesnt see it or anything an the BIOS is setup to boot to A: then the cd drive. Its a xp pro 1a 2002 version of xp.Okay, well LET's try putting the cd ahead of the floppy drive in boot order in the bios and see if that helps. It is an original retail XP CD, yes?Do other bootable disks work?GO to bios and set the cd drive as your first boot DEVICE..Yes, which is the wierd thing. It works in other MACHINES that are nondell. I have it set that way but it still didnt show that. Yes thoe not sure why this disk isnt.Any other idea's then???If the cd is at the top of the boot order and if you are using an original, retail xp cd, then it has to work. Try to clean the cd.. Quote from: daryllsilorio on October 08, 2009, 08:18:48 PM Try to clean the cd..Or clean your drive. Is the CD for that machine ? ?no it wasnt, any rate I gave up on itWow - time warp I forgot is all...... this can be closed thenThe MS KB tells how to install without a working CD in the target machine. But.. you gave up. So maybe NEXT time.huh? no, I just reinstalled 2k at that point |

Solve : Windows or Linux - Let Google and the users Decide? |
Answer» I thought it might be interesting to let Google users decide where they faced more problems. Very less problems with LinuxWhat type of problems are you talking about? What's your point? As we can clearly see from the data, a top "linux" related search is: "Linux is better then windows". This is clearly from Linux zealots looking for like-minded individuals. See, Linux lovers like to argue more about which package management format is better, rather then deal with any issue that can occur in the real world. Quote from: soybean on July 09, 2010, 06:41:37 AM What type of problems are you talking about? What's your point? As evident from the images, more Google searches about Windows were about the problems like hanging during bootup or shutdown problems but Linux were general curiosity. Quote from: Ashutosh32 on July 09, 2010, 06:56:10 AM As evident from the images, googles search suggestion box is hardly "evidence" regardless of wether it's in image format or not. Quote more Google searches about Windows were about the problems like hanging during bootup or shutdown problems but Linux were general curiosity. Search "Linux boot problems": About 6,530,000 results Search "Windows boot problems": About 18,500,000 results. Aside from the obvious skew here given their completely different market share, it's interesting th note that a good portion of the windows hits were in fact articles describing what to do in said case. Whereas the Linux search reveals many queries in forums regarding boot issues in Linux that are either met with silence or "OMFG RTFM NOOB, UPDAT YUR KERNALS" or something equally rude. In particular, the biggest "evidence" is the fact that you are clearly running Linux yourself. And yet, contrariwise, you seem to be implying that you are both presenting and receiving from google a "fair" set of results. People who "hate windows" only do so because it is more popular. I find it curious that people who insist that windows update has driven them over the edge with it's constant updates of huge 53MB files seem to have no problem when Linux updates weigh in at 100 or so megs. It has absolutely nothing to do with empirical data and everything to do with bias against the norm. This is the very same reason so many people CLAIM that "everybody hates the US" and equal disparity A:) No proof of that, it's a meaningless assumption, and B: the only reason people ever claim to hate the US is for reasons that can easily apply to their own countries in some ways. The fact that they are in the spotlight on the world scene makes everything about them more noticable. For example, comments like "HAHA US isn't really democracy it's more like dictatorship lolz" from a user named "ILUV_LENIN". Meanwhile, I cannot think of a single country that fits the "perfect" definition of democracy. I can certainly attest that Canada sometimes doesn't feel as "free" as we are led to believe, but it's certainly amongst the freer nations. Basically, my point is that bias generally goes against the dominant side. In the same fashion, the fact that Windows has become the most prevalent Operating system is the only reason why people pretend to hate it. I say "pretend" because in a large VARIETY of cases, you will often find somebody like "LINUX_RULEZ" join a chatroom, declare that Xchat and linux roolz and windows droolz, and in a curious twist performing a CTCP VERSION on them returns " mIRC v6.35 Khaled Mardam-Bey", and it turns out they are running windows ME. Linux is not necessarily about "overthrowing the machine" or providing a better experience to users, it's simply because they aren't "in the lead". Linux users enjoy downplaying Linux issues and hyperbolizing Windows problems. a minor flaw in a single windows-based program, for example, makes front page news on slashdot, with comments like "THIS IS Y I DON'T UZE WINDOZE"... all the while ignoring the fact that said program's linux port has the same problem. And of course a flaw in a Linux program is the programs fault, not Linux itself. Not sure why that logic never seems to apply to windows. it seems that using the windows API functions in a way not intended to be used and clearly marked in the documentation as being the exact opposite way to do it is the API's fault, not the programs. Or how about the fact that they are constantly saying they had "X" feature first. For example, many Linux users claim that "compozer was around long before aero"... sure, it existed, in a non-usable barely functional form. Then when MS announced Aero suddely it's moved to the front burner and they are all like "YAH, WELL WE'VE HAD IT SINCE 2005". There are so many various open source projects on all sorts of areas that they can claim "we did it first" for nearly everything. But doing something doesn't necessarily mean they do it . Sure, windows has it's problems. But At least power management works. That's more then I can say for any Linux distro I've tried on any machine. Quote googles search suggestion box is hardly "evidence" regardless of wether it's in image format or not It at least suggests the most searched queries. When it comes to Windows problems, I've had my experience (I was using XP) - No NIC drivers and I had no other means to get them on that box. It couldn't run an EXE file which worked correctly under WINE. Once it had its errors, it couldn't even shut down. This was a just installed W(ork)I(s)N(ot)D(one)O(n)W(indow)S XP. BC_Programmer, a good description of the "OS fanboi" mentality. I found this immortal quote... Quote Linux iz da r0xx0r and Windoze iz da sUxx0r Whenever an OS or something adds a new feature, Linux always claims to have added it first. How it works: "OS X renders windows in the GPU now!" "Oh Linux has done that for a few years." "Really?" "Yah, there was a prototype for a plug-in to X11 that never shipped on any Linux distro and crashed every 10 minutes-- but we had it first!" They also have a great way of deflecting any criticism: "Linux doesn't work for me because it doesn't have a good app to do Gantt charts." "Linux isn't an distro! It's just a kernel!" "Well, ok, the Linux kernel doesn't support Sleep MODE on my laptop." "That's the distro's fault!" PS: The said program worked as easily as: Code: [Select]wine /path/to/my/program.exeon my Linux box later on. Quote "Well, ok, the Linux kernel doesn't support Sleep mode on my laptop." Sure is. If they don't enable the CORRECT ACPI options in the kernel .config, how can they even expect to have it? Linux is about flexibility rather than having every feature you can imagine. If you need it, you enable it during the config, if you don't you just forget it. Simple. Quote "Linux isn't an distro! It's just a kernel!"True, you build up what you need or just pick one of those according to your taste. Quote Linux always claims to have added it first. Whom do you refer to? Linus Torvalds, a particular member on the community, or did all of us time-sync to yell that together? Quote from: Ashutosh32 on July 09, 2010, 10:27:36 PM
A particular subset of Linux fanboys advocates, mainly That sounds better. Talk about Windows now, Spend 119.99$ to get Win7, realize that it doesn't support your current hardware and spend 300$ on some hardware that supports it, then spend another 50$ to get the antivirus that the Message Centre or something like that informs, then 10-15$ / 2 months on the tech guy that fixes it once you've screwed it up. And I forget to mention about the regular antivirus scans, disk defrags, etc etc etc which take up your time regularly without fail and the malware etc despite all your efforts. Boot up and general response time can be plotted as a exponential relation against time. And talk about the BUGS? Quote from: Ashutosh32 on July 09, 2010, 10:34:24 PM That sounds better. The only thing there that applies to me is paying for it in the beginning. Quote from: Ashutosh32 on July 09, 2010, 10:34:24 PM That sounds better. That is your experience; it hasn't been mine. I ran XP on my old Shuttle XPC (model ST62K, P4) and when I bought a new one, SN78SH7 (AMD Phenom II 945) I bought W7 Pro 64 bit. I am running Avira Free antivirus, and I do not anticipate spending any money at all on a "tech guy". I take daily image backups (it takes 20 minutes) so if I "screw it up" as you put it, I am up and running very soon. It sounds like you have cherry picked a bunch of bad Windows experiences. And exaggerated. Before I spent 119 English pounds, I did my homework to make sure all of my hardware was supported. In fact when I got the new Shuttle I knew there was no 64 bit driver for my Canon laser printer, so I virtualised my old XP machine and ran it on the new machine in VMWare until Canon released a 64 bit driver 3 weeks later. I take sensible precautions (NoScript on Firefox, antivirus guard, don't run keygens, etc). I don't bother defragging. There is very little point on modern drives/filesystems. Solve : Hulu Plus vs. Netflix? |
Answer» Hulu Plus vs. Netflix: Which Is Best? That's the point of a PC World article. Quote Jeff Bertolucci, PC WorldFull STORY: http://www.pcworld.com/article/200246/hulu_plus_vs_netflix_which_is_best.html?tk=hp_blg Myself, I don't really agree with his point. But I have been wrong. Take a look at http://hulu.com ans SEE for yourself.I just don't see Hulu Plus as a subscription service as a very successful business. All of the shows they are offering will be available in reruns either on their networks, or on TNT, USA, etc. I'm sure they will have some subscribers, but I can't imagine it will ever be a big success. On the other hand it doesn't cost the networks much to offer the service, so I guess it will provide a little EXTRA income.I'm currently a Netflix subscriber so could be a little bias. However, the only advantage I see with Hulu Plus is the ability to watch current live TV shows, something Netflix currently doesn't offer. However, personally I rather just wait for the shows to hit DVD/Blu-ray and then watch the full season without having to wait a week to see the next episode. ALSO Hulu is just local networks, it doesn't movies or mini-series on HBO, Showtime, etc. and Netflix definitely doesn't have any shows with commercials. |

Solve : Cheapy Product from ebay..? |
Answer» It started with this I've asked my friend if i can use he's eBay account because i don't have a credit card yet... hehe guess I'm too young.. (18) so i ordered the Blue 180mm fans from eBay for like 3 bucks each... 1st problem it took 3 months for me to get my Fans and then i connected them to my computer one 1st one fan perfect, ND fan OMG half blue half purple (OK no so noticeable), 3rd one only 3 lights work... FML i was kinda mad so i went on eBay with my friend account and gave the sellers a bad report for selling low quality merchandise... then they reply by not even apologizing or offering a replacement or anything, instead they b*tch about it not being they're fault and just argue about me that the shipping want they're fault, most likely with them knowing that they sell faulty merchandise... so my fried gets mad at me too for him not being able to but a phone of the same company because they don't like him now because of the Bad report i added on they're eBay account... My comeback to my friend is at least you know that when you buy your phone from a different seller its not gonna be a phone with a Blue/Purple phone with missing key lights... lol he laugh too and said it was ok...I would have to say you got what you paid for. Newegg sales a 180mm blue fan for $24.00 each. So before buying something off of ebay do a little research and see what the part would cost on another site. Then stop and think about that really cheap price and ask yourself if it would be worth taking the chance.I would have had a similar problem SURELY when I went to buy my Super Nintendo for Nostalgia's sake |

Solve : Delete Steam?? |
Answer» Okay, my brother is addicted. He got Team Fortress 2 a couple years back, and was introduced to Steam. He's now stolen a grand total of $534 from my parents to get levels. He's chatting with these people who are edging him on and convincing him to do it. If he doesn't, they call him a loser/fat/stupid/retard/etc. He has a LOW self esteem anyways, so it doesn't take much for him to give in. We got him off of it for a while, but I just got back from camp to discover that he installed Steam to my laptop. I don't know if my parents told him he could, but I doubt it. Steam is ruining his life, but he's blinded by that fact by his addiction. So I'm wondering if there's a way to delete it and then get parental controls on and block the website you download it from? Also, if anyone could help me decide whether I should tell my parents about him downloading it while I was at camp or not? Thanks! Since nobody else has RESPONDED, I've got to ask the obvious. If it is your laptop, why are you even asking if it is OK to delete Steam? And yes there are SEVERAL ways to password PROTECT your computer. Click on help and passwords and take your pick.CHOCD, you should tell your parents about it, 'cuz ift's their money he's spending and they shouldn't give him what he wants all the TIME. |

I'd much rather take it than have it put in a junk pile.I had a Commodore 64. It was my first computer. But, I would not pay anything for one now. If I still had it, I would take it to the next recycling drive of a local computer users' group (CUG). I simply can't justify KEEPING old computers; keeping them takes up space and causes clutter. Otherwise, I might still have it, along with other computers I've owned (286, 486, a 75MHz Pentium). I might give it away, I suppose, on condition that whoever takes it also takes the Sinclair QL and Amiga that are also in the attic, and as long as they promise not to expect me to talk about retro computing. Solve : mother board fix :S ??? |

Answer» one night me and my mate was talking and he came up with the idea fixing dead mbs by un-soldering every component on a mb so its just the bare circuit board and then baking the bored to allow all the metal on the board to remelt... would this work.. im not going to try and i would not recommend any ELSE to try it Quote from: blackrainbow on June 28, 2010, 03:49:13 AM one night me and my mate was talking and he came up with the idea fixing dead mbs by un-soldering every component on a mb so its just the bare circuit board and then baking the bored to allow all the metal on the board to remelt... would this work.. No. First, you would need to unsolder everything. apparently you don't realize how much of an UNDERTAKING that is or how much soldering SKILL would be required. Then you have to hope it doesn't catch fire or something while baking. THEN you have to re-solder everything you took off and put it back on. And then you have to hope that the motherboard problem wasn't actually a timer chip or other component that had to be removed, that you soldered everything back on properly, And that by some bit of pure luck the bits of solder you left on the board melted in some magical way to fix the board. (since solder is pretty much the only metal used on the board at all that has a low enough melting point) The thing is, motherboard problems are almost always with the various different Integrated circuits that are soldered onto the board. In fact, I'd say barring some sort of physical defect in the board (such as a cut trace) any motherboard issue is in fact tracable to some soldered component on the motherboard, often timer chips or VRMs. In which case, even in the best case scenario where you are able to actually unsolder and solder the tiny components using some sort of infinite amount of patience and an equally collosal amount of soldering skill, it wouldn't help since the problem was on one of the "components" that you took off and re-added. And even if it was a cut trace, baking wouldn't help since the metal used for the traces is not even close to having a melting point WITHIN range of a consumer oven.thanks bc_programmer well we was drinking at the time but it did seem a bit reasonable . hehe thanks for sharing some LIGHT on it Also motherboards are multilayer, so all the layers that you can't see would be ruined and the plastic material that the board is made of would melt or char. AS BCP says, "motherboard" problems are rarely caused by a fault with the actual physical board. |

I suggest therapy. you need to get over your unnatural fear of spectacles and other eye wear. Perhaps one day you can have Mr-Peanut brand products again, without standing in the shopping aisle, staring in horror at the giant foam Mr-peanut manikin, MOUTH agape, staring at both the peanut jar in your hand and alternating with the large manikin as a puddle forms beneath you, and your KNEES buckle as you succumb to the pure horror of the situation. Perhaps, with said counselling, you can walk by a Lenscrafters without going int a murderous rage. Maybe, one day, you will have the COURAGE to walk into a convenience store, and not turn red with pure anger as you see the cheap sunglasses. In a similar vein, perhaps your friends will no longer be afraid to play ZZ-top on "shuffle" in the fear that "Cheap Sunglasses" would play, knowing full well what happened at Aunt Gladys's funeral, when you caught a young relative playing the song on his MP3 player. Never before have you seen so many giraffes learn to play the washboard only to be told that they no longer had a gig. You single-handedly destroyed their band. Well, actually, it wasn't only you that went berserk, your third cousin Ronald went on a rampage by your side, due to his fear of clowns (combined with the curious decision to have a circus act at a funeral; I mean, Aunt Gladys was a part of their Troupe, but to my understanding she was a third-level book-keeper. Solve : How to disable monitor's "auto adjust in progress" message? |
Answer» It's driving me crazy. I tried to find the ANSWER with a search, but was not very successful. I have a Dell E171FP monitor that has just recently started this message. The screen turns black and the "auto adjust in progress" message appears (three times since I started this message) How do I turn off auto adjust? Please, can somebody help? Thanxhttp://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/t/17930572.aspxI do believe I WOULD try to find out why it keeps trying to auto adjust INSTEAD of turning the feature off.Thank you all for trying to help. Unfortunately, it's still doing it, just not quite as often. As far as finding out what's causing it, rather than DISABLING it, that would seem to be even more difficult for me! I would not have the first clue where to start! The Dell link was not helpful EITHER, but it made me aware that lots of folks are having this problem. One post mentioned June 13th as when it started on her computer, & that's about the time mine did, as well. Hmmm? Thanx again, all! |

To fix "advanced problems" you'll either be reading HUNDREDS of detailed books of you'll be gaining experience hands-on.and you'll WANT to figure out what kind of "advance stuff" and "advance problems" you want to learn about. Many DIFFERENT books exist to solve different issues out there.Ah ok thanks alot bro, I thought there was one big book haha. Yeah most of my stuff has been hands-on. |

Solve : Pros and Cons of Offsite backup? |
Answer» My company is interested in using an off-site backup program instead of just using an external hard drive. I am not really familiar with the PROS and cons of doing this. Can someone explain these pros and cons to me. Which companies would you recommend to look into for cloud back-up? Also, would it be better to have all the computer in my office backup to one main computer, then off site backup that computer or have each computer off site backup on its own? Please do not post the same question more than once. I've deleted your other post. Oh yeah almost forgot, you're a mod now. I'm really not clear on all the pros and cons but, in addition to what Helpmeh said, I'll add: Pros (For Offsite Backup): - Can access files anywhere (from any computer with Internet access) - Can share files - Hard drive (onsite) could get stolen Cons (Against it): - May need to establish tight administrative oversight to avoid improper use by employees. [Multiple user accounts with a cloud storage service might be wise to control who has access to what, if deemed necessary.] I suggest adrive.com as a provider for this service. Quote My company is interested in using an off-site backup program instead of just using an external hard drive. you shouldn't be choosing one or the other, you should be doing both. in which case the pro's and cons don't really matter- and they don't. on-site backup, such as a external hard drive or even just another hard drive in a server, is intended to allow for quick access to the backed up data, in case of accidental loss- say a employee accidentally puts in "DROP TABLE *" into a query window or something, therefore deleting all the data in the database. Most companies deal with the data in those databases all the time, so every second that the database is down = lost revenue- it's hardly cost-effective to have to drive across town or wait 3 hours to download a 80GB GHOST image of the database hard disk, instead you can restore the backup with a single command (most databases allow for automatic replication and can restore said replica's with a quick command. off-site backup is for when your server room catches fire or you otherwise lose the first set of backups (say, if an employee accidentally drives drunk through the server room window, which would almost CERTAINLY mean revocation of their pilot's license). Note how I said first set. Most backup strategies rotate a fixed set of external hard drives- say, 5 of them. every week (or some other interval) the oldest backup is overwritten with a new backup. Then say every month (or again, some other interval, it depends on the how important data freshness is) the latest set is stored in a safe deposit box or other off-site backup, and a "fresh" set of drives is used for the on-site backup. Then, say every year or so, the oldest off-site backup set is used again for storing the on-site backups. This strategy usually has some revisions that make it easier and faster, such as incremental backups (no reason to have backup copies of all the financial papers from, say, 2004 in every single backup since) and so forth, but in general the "rotation" strategy is what is usually employed, often drive images are written to a tape backup rather then to external hard drives, this is because tapes are a lot cheaper then external hard drives and about 100 times safer for archival storage, and far less likely to fail (it's just a tape, so it has far fewer mechanical components then a hard drive) a "web-based" backup solution is all but useless unless you have a very small amount of data to backup- you aren't going to uploading, say, 80GB hard drive images to adrive.com, even with a paid account. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 25, 2010, 08:33:59 AM you shouldn't be choosing one or the other, you should be doing both. in which case the pro's and cons don't really matter- and they don't.+1 Quote you shouldn't be choosing one or the other, you should be doing bothVery GOOD point. And, good comments on onsite and offsite tactics and on backup strategies (hard drive rotation, incremental backups, etc.). For anyone interested, here's a reference discussing the full gamet of backup strategies and methods: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BackupPersonally I think that if you are tasked with developing a mission-critical backup strategy for a company, then you would be very foolish indeed to work up that strategy by asking questions on web forums, rather than evaluating IT consultants and specialist service providers.BC touched on it briefly, the only way an off-site back up can work is if you have a very high speed connection to the back up servers. Preferably a direct fiber connection. |

Solve : notification buttons disappeared.? |
Answer» My notification buttons (the ones that appear to the left of the clock at the bottom right) have disappeared for no reason. I cannot do anything to make them reappear. Does anyone know how to fix this? Right-click on the taskbar. Choose "toolbars" - "quick launch". After it appears, lock the taskbar. Quick launch is ALREADY checked; always has been. The settings on this computer are identical to the settings on my other computer, which displays all the noticifation icons. I never made any changes to the configuration or settings but one day thye just weren't there. But you can't see the quick launch bar, correct? Okay, try this. Unlock the taskbar. Do you see a vertical bar? If so, drag it to the "wide" side of the taskbar. If still no joy, you might want to run a full system scan with both your AV and MalwareBytes just to rule out malware before we proceed any further. Quote from: Allan on June 22, 2010, 07:01:04 AM But you can't see the quick launch bar, correct? Okay, try this. Unlock the taskbar. Do you see a vertical bar? If so, drag it to the "wide" side of the taskbar. When I toggle quick launch on and off, all it does is turn off and on the icons that appear next to the statr MENU. The icons that are usually next to the clock (volume, norton, updates, etc.) will not appear no matter what. I am running a comprehensive scan now with norton 360. Wait a sec - so you are saying that the quicklaunch icons are visible but the normal icons in the notification area are not? If that's the case: 1) Right-click on Start - then Properties - then Taskbar TAB. Make sure "hide inactive icons" is not checked 2) Have you recently made any changes to the desktop theme? 3) Anything different since the last time things worked properly (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)? Quote from: Allan on June 22, 2010, 07:43:47 AM Wait a sec - so you are saying that the quicklaunch icons are visible but the normal icons in the notification area are not? If that's the case: 1) I can check and uncheck it without making any difference - either way, none of the icons appear. On my other computer I have this OPTION checked but it always shows the ones I customized as "Always show." 2) No. 3) Not that I know of. They were there one minute and gone the next, kind of like how my router and internet connection were working one minute and not the next. Baffling And neither your AV nor MalwareBytes showed any PROBLEMS? Well, here are some thoughts: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/notification-area-icons-missing-in-vista/ http://winhlp.com/node/16 http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/01/04/system-tray-icon-missing-from-system-tray-in-windows-xp/ Quote from: Allan on June 22, 2010, 10:31:38 AM And neither your AV nor MalwareBytes showed any problems? Solve : Willful Cursor? |
Answer» When I use Explorer and try to select SOMETHING from my Favorites, my cursor becomes willful and won't obey. It floats around, making it DIFFICULT to make my selection. At first I thought it was a mouse issue, but it also happens when I use the touch pad. The floating reminds me of how the cursor looks when I yield control to a remote service technician, especially when I'm not sure who has control of the cursor at the moment and it turns out we're both trying at the same time. If I didn't know better I would think the list of favorites was becoming a ouja board and the cursor a planchette. Any idea what's actually happening here and how I can make it stop? Is that the only time it happens? No harm in scanning for malware with both your anti virus utility AND MalwareBytesIt only happens with "blue e" Explorer. It doesn't happen with "butterfly" Explorer or with Safari. My computer has been thoroughly scanned with anti virus after this started happening, but I guess I'll have to try the MalwareBytes. Thanks, I'll let you know the results.I'm giving a final update on the PROBLEM. |

Solve : 5kw power and a 190 foot radio tower how many miles out can it go?? |
Answer» FM Radio station with - 5kw POWER and a 190 foot radio tower how many miles out can it go? I can't get on my LOCAL radio, but on-line I can get the station. I live about 70 miles from the city that has the radio tower. At 5kw power how many miles out does the signal go. They want to get 15kw not sure when that will happen.A lot of depends on terrain, hilly or flat, tall trees or no trees, etc. That sounds like a math problem one would have for home work. 70 miles is well outside the service area of a VHF FM transmitter using any practical antenna mounting scheme. Curvature of the earth. (Math homework like you said?) The maximum line-of-sight DISTANCE from a transmitter 190 feet high to a receiving antenna around ground level is much less than 70 miles, so using a multi-element antenna designed for fringe area RECEPTION and putting it on a tower would probably help. |

I know people have varying degrees of expertise and would like ANSWERS but i read alot of posts that I, personally, don't know the answer to, so i google it and, more often than not, the answer is USUALLY in the top 4-5 results. If people cant use google how could they possibly 'remove malware' or 'replace a hard drive'. I gets on my nerves. I have problems with my PC. The hardware, software, html, games, but i would be embarrassed to CREATE a post when the answer can be found on the first page of a google search. Does anybody have any views on this or am i just old and jaded? Old and jaded. Nice avatar by the way. Really, you're not old and jaded. There are various reasons people don't look it up themselves. Be it laziness, LACK of comprehension, whatever. But surely a google search as got to be QUICKER than waiting for a post to be answered. And, what is the difference between not comprehending the answer found in a search, but comprehending the reply to a post. Solve : Ati Radeon 7000 with Dell E551c monitor, limited resolution options.? |

Answer» I have a Radeon 7000 graphics card and a Dell E551c monitor with WINDOWS XP Pro. I've installed the latest graphics driver an ATI catalyst available for my card. Here are the specs for my monitor: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/56ttk/En/SPECS/specs.htm. Why can't a get a resolution between the two? Because there isn't one. Quote from: shopping.com The awesome Dell E551c 15-inch color monitor displays sharp and brilliant images at an optimal resolution of 800x600 pixels (and a maximum resolution of 1024x768 pixels). The limitation is the monitor. This type can only work at fixed resolutions. The "awesome" Dell E551c has two resolutions. That sucks. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 19, 2010, 07:49:01 PM evidently the monitor is awful.Yes it is, so another monitor would be the solution to my problem then, right?A bigger monitor would make the higher resolution easier to read. Solve : Windows 3.1vs WFWG 3.11? |
Answer» Hi, I want install Windows 3.1x on an old PC. I have both Windows 3.1 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11. What are the main differences between the two? Which would be better for general use and gaming? Quote from: Cityscape on June 13, 2010, 08:28:34 AM What are the main differences between the two? WfWG has much better support for networks and PEER 2 peer networking with other computers in a "workgroup" without a centralized authority (server). Quote Which would be better for general use and gaming?WfWg would be my choice for general use. Neither are useful at all for gaming, since hardly any Windows 3.1 games were worth playing (since the video throughput of 16-bit GDI was awful, even with the WinG graphics library)WELL I want it mainly for old games I played as a kid. Do all games for Windows 3.1 work just as GOOD on WFWG 3.11? What about my S3 graphics card driver, it says for Windows 3.1, will it work?Yes to All.So basically then WFWG 3.11 just ADDS some new network features (which come in handy if I ever wan to go online). Okay, thanks for the help. Sweet, I just found out that it's possible to add USB support to Windows 3.1! Instructions are at http://www.bootdisk.com/usb.htm, I think the second method is better, what do you think?I've tried a number of methods to get USB working with DOS (and therefore windows 3.1) as well. First limitation- no hot swap. if your drive isn't plugged in when you start the machine, it probably won't be available. second- they were very crashy, and If I tried to use a drive that was larger then 2GB it crashed. (my 256MB worked fine, aside from the no hot swapping thing). It certainly made it easier to move files between them. Well, until I decided to use a CD-RW instead. There's an Unofficial Service Pack for Win98 that enanbles a bubch of good features in Win 3.11.... It's worth TRACKING down... i don't have a current link...it's been pulled. |

Solve : OS/2? |
Answer» I have a few questions about OS/2 (specifically WARP 3 & 4). 1. can OS/2 run Windows programs or not?I believe so- my version only WORKED for windows 3.1 (that is, it didn't work for 3.11 because MS had fixed a bug in user.exe and that totally changed everything that IBM had to patch) I believe that was resolved though... I have absolutely no idea as to the situation with OS/2 and 32-bit windows (I don't even know wether OS/2 has been discontinued). Quote 2. does it install over top DOS like Windows 3.xx or can it run without DOS like NT?The latter. But instead of CMD, you get PC-DOS. I'm pretty sure that PC-DOS is running in VIRTUAL x86 mode when you start a prompt in OS/2- much like windows- but, OS/2 is not running on top of DOS. really OS/2 is sort of a cousin to NT. Quote 3. does it install from a CD, is the CD bootable or does it need a boot floppy? It installs from a CD. my version needed a boot floppy but the later ones do not, to my understanding. Okay I want to dual-boot it with either 98SE or ME (and Linux & BSD after) so which is better to install first? Should I do OS/2 or 9x first? |

Of course you will gain some added space by making the files contiguous, but again - nothing major. On the other hand, there is a bit of a wear & tear advantage to having the hd heads travel a little less.Don't remember the last time I defragged a hard drive. It was probably a windows xp box, though..... maybe five years ago........ I don't really see the point. Quote from: patio on June 02, 2010, 09:03:10 AM I never bought into the myth that an OS never needs defragging...and still don't.Are you talking about Windows or all operating systems? I know that Windows needs defragging, I have proved it to myself. When I defrag a Windows computer that has like 10% fragmentation, I know does. I get a performance boost. Linux is completely different though. Would you defrag a Linux box, patio? In Linux, the hard drive defrags you. Quote from: michaewlewis on June 02, 2010, 02:01:08 PM In Linux, the hard drive defrags you.I've have always defragged on a regular basis and have never seen a noticeable change in performance on any of my machines but that's probably because I do it on a regular basis. However, a friend asked me to look at his computer because it had a hard time playing a certain game. The game would start and stop constantly. It was almost unplayable. He had the computer for 3 or 4 years. I asked him when the last time he defragged. He said what's defrag? I did a diskclean and defragged twice for good measure, and then the game ran fine. It depends on the circumstances, but defrag can make a difference. In Soviet Russia, Waldo finds YOU! etc, etc.I haven't defragged mine in over 2 years. During one of those years I didn't have access to my machine so the need was non-existent. The other year I've been running Linux. Quote from: Broni on June 01, 2010, 08:00:03 PM There is no option for me to checkI defragged earlier this week and typically defrag every couple of weeks. I never really cared for the the defrag program that came with XP, so I took Broni's lead and downloaded SmartDefrag. I checked it over and ran the program. Looks like a keeper. Thanks Broni I defragged sometime in may. Can't remember which day though... Quote from: Broni on June 01, 2010, 08:00:03 PM I use SmartDefrag, which defrags my drive on the go - anytime my computer is idle.Same here. Quote from: kpac on June 02, 2010, 09:48:53 AM Never. Takes too long with a 1 TB HDD and only 150 GB used. That's a reason to partition your HD. Then, you can defragment only your OS partition or select any individual partition. It takes less time than defragmenting an entire HD. Quote from: soybean on June 07, 2010, 11:59:24 AM Not really. The defrag utility will only concern itself with occupied space unless told to do otherwise, and even then it takes no time to "compact free space" And btw, I'm a HUGE proponent of lots of partitions, so please don't think I'm arguing against that. It's just that it will not effect defrag time. |

Solve : can't open hard drive? |
Answer» My HP won't a open hard drive. I've been TRYING to install a new OS on this machine and it's stuck in a LOOP. I boot from the disc no problem, I agree to terms, SELECT partition, it loads the installation FILES, then comes the reboot screen. I restart and it's back to the begining. I've went into set up and told it to boot hard drive first and that didn't work. I have even pulled the hard drive out, and put in a hard drive, which I know is fully functional, and it will not even open it. First the screen which gives you options for starting the computer comes up. I'm talking about the screen with the list of different safe modes or start WINDOWS normally. If I select any of the safe modes a big list of things pops up then the machine shuts down. If I select open windows normally, I can vaguely see the windows logo start to show then the machine shuts down. Any ideas out there? You cannot move a hd from one system to another and expect it to boot. |
