Stop shouting.

If I were you kpac, right now I'd be highly motivated to help.  Shhh....Icons don't have to be square.

you can EVEN specify a non-square icon to be the application icon for an executable. the shell will stretch the icon as needed to fit the shellicon size. of COURSE using a non-square icon means that the aspect ratio will almost always be wrong, but it doesn't to be square.

Also because the given image has anti-aliassed text and I really have no reason to waste more time then necessary, the attached icon does not have an alpha channel.

Solve : Is MegaupLoad Safe??

Answer»

Is MegaupLoad Safe?
What about other sites like it?
Does it have annoyware?
Does it help people break the law?
Why are these sites offshore?

Do you think it, or sites like it,
promote the advancement of human rihgts?

We have a 40 year-old teenager living with us that thinks it is alright. We are having constant PROBLEMS with out internet connection. He promised to use it only in the wee hours of the morning.

Any comments welcome.

Megaupload is an online Hong Kong-based company established in 2005 for the use of uploading and downloading files. It includes a video browsing section in the site Megavideo as well as a sister company called Megaporn (formerly Megarotic) which hosts uploaded pornographic content, but provides no free services.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megaupload

Tell the 40 year old teen to not grow up so quick!  lol

Megaupload is just another popular file sharing upload/download like Rapidshare, etc. It has a number of servers to link to, to get the best speed from your location. It's really good if you have a premium account (which costs) or you have limits for free access.

It's good video hosting. Some people leech pirated or porn movies through Megaupload as it has the sister site as meationed Megavideo and Megaporn. If uploading or downloading pirated stuff could get you into trouble with the host.

It can drink bandwidth if streaming videos, more than youtube, etc.

Overall it's safe. Like the other popular file sharers, it's well known and the website / DOWNLOADER is safe, but the content you download could be anything. It's up to you to check what you download. It has lots of legal content too.I Just Know That.... If you're on a pirate hunt or a TORRENT hunt, maybe more so ...Mediafire is a good replacement.

I've used it before and have read several reviews on its security(Has SSL encryption)My performance check of them all here in NZ is:

Direct HTTP > Premium Megaupload (maxed and held)
Premium Mediafire > Storage. To > Premium Rapidshare > Direct FTP (maxed my connection, fluxuated)
4Shared > P2P / Torrents (slow as a snail)

Of course, this is tested using premium accounts (which cost) - free services caps you a lot more.
Rapidshare is ACTUALLY still slow at times being premium, depending how busy.
It would depend on the server for HTTP and FTP performance.
Torrents upload 2/3 more than they download and lie on their stats. They also slow down to a snail near the end and leech.
P2P is a major security hole on your computer. ISP can cut/cap your connection if too much P2P use.personally i use rapidshare and megaupload to house backups of my backups out of the house. just in case a fire, tornado, major power surge, or my backups are corrupted. the main reason i use 2 is just cuz sometimes one of them have a server down for maintenance and i cant get the file i need back so i can jump from one to the other without much of a problem.

I have but one word that makes all predictions doubtfull at best. That word is "tornado". truenorthActually i should have said "hurricane" truenorthhttp://www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com/Truenorth, you had it right the first time.

Hurricanes are somewhat predicable, while tornado's are totally unpredictable.Yes BUT the sheer size of the area covered by a hurricane will cause the contaminants from the oil spill to impact a very greater area compared to  what a localized tornado would do but over a VASTLY greater area. It would undoubtedly, if it is  Gulf based event as so many of them are turn the Gulf waters into a cauldron of water/oil/dispersant soup. Which is one of the points that Commando's article relates. truenorthYou can VIEW the realtime feeds from the ROV's.  The ENTERPRISE ones are active, now. maybe "Waterspout" would be more precise, on account of this being with regard to something in the sea.

besides- unless somebody throws in a couple million tons of egg yolks (or a less colourful emulsifier) oil will simply not mix with the water- it will always float on top.

The area it covers afterwards would of course be a larger problem.from NOAA:  http://www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com/posted/2931/NOAA_fact_sheet_on_hurricanes_and_oil_spills.572167.pdf

Solve : Trauma TV series?

Answer»

Quote from: overthehill on June 04, 2010, 10:51:08 AM

Well your explanation makes great sense, and they probably have their reasons?

One reason is CERTAIN networks outside of the United States pay for the broadcast rights of these programs outside of the United States. For example, the broadcast rights in Asia for all 3 CSI series, House, Lost, Damages, Leverage and others belong to a cable channel called AXN, which is owned by Sony Television. They're usually about a season behind, and they are a cable channel, not a free channel, so the US networks are contractually required to block access to us since Sony has purchased the rights to spam us with local ads and PROFIT from local cable company payments we make.

Since they broadcast most shows about a season behind here, no one would subscribe to cable if they could just watch it for free online and not see it months after it's been broadcasted in the US.

Locally, overpriced cable (nearly $80/mo.) in a country where the average monthly salary is maybe $300 ends up just feeding the massive PIRATED goods trade already thriving here. You'd be hard pressed to walk into any shopping mall here without finding at LEAST one pirate shop... if not half a dozen...As noted by "overthehill" the 1st link (mine) does not lead you to anything that indicates a "restriction as does JJ3000's link. I went further into it and i suspect that "quaxo" is pointing in the right direction. One GOING deeper finds a site called "HULU TV" and they are the ones making the show available (plus countless others as well) and they seem to control where it is shown and not NBC. Or who knows maybe it is NBC in another manifestation.truenorth

Thanks for that quaxo.Great explanation.Would be nice though if they would tell us that a certain program can be viewed only in the USAI can kind of understand why there may be legal restrictions why some content may be limited to the USA, but it would have been nice if they would have had an error message telling those out of the USA what the problem was. They usually do. I'm not sure why the NBC player isn't showing that. I thought it did.

Odd that even in their terms of use there is no mention of restriction to the USA, but they do basically give you permission to download any "Material" from the "Service". I wonder if this includes the TV shows:

Quote
You certify that you are an individual (i.e., not a corporation). The Service is owned and operated by NBCU and its affiliated companies and contains material that is derived in whole or in part from material supplied and owned by NBCU and other sources. Such material is protected by copyright, trademark, and other applicable laws. You may not modify, copy, reproduce, republish, upload, post, transmit, publicly display, prepare derivative works based on, or distribute in any way any material from the Service, including but not limited to code and software ("Material"). You may, however, download Material from the Service for your personal, non-commercial use only, provided you keep intact all copyright and other proprietary notices and use the Material in accordance with all restrictions applicable to your use if the Service in general. In the event that you download Material from the Service, such Material is licensed to you by NBCU and NBCU does not transfer title to any such Material to you.

Yet another service not accessible outside of the United States.

But at least they tell you exactly why:
Quote
International (Outside USA)

Hulu is a U.S.-only service at this time. Unfortunately, we don't have international streaming rights for our content. Our intention is to make Hulu's growing content lineup available worldwide as quickly as possible. This requires working with the content owners to clear the rights for each show or film in each specific region. It's a long-term project. We don't have a definite timeline, but we'll continue to work to make it happen.

Solve : Someone took over my computer?

Answer»

Just bought a 2nd HAND laptop, and was listening to music when I noticed someone had remotely taken over the computer.  I quickly disconnected the internet connect, but I guess some damage was done since directly after that, the previous owner's password was required to UNLOCK the computer when the screen save turned on. I have disabled the screensaver and have changed the name of the computer.  Since this was 2nd hand I don't have any of the original operating system discs, and really did not want to pay big bucks to by MICROSOFT operating system & office programs.  I am running a Linksys router firewall.  Any suggestions on how I can protect myself better, and identify what kind of damage might have been done by who ever GOT into the laptop? The best thing to do with a 2nd hand machine is a wipe and a clean install.

You may never be safe until you do a clean install. I would do a clean install.

If you don't want to buy Windows you could try Ubuntu Linux. It's free and it'll come with OpenOffice Suite (compatible with MS Office) installed for you.

Unless it's past warranty. Although, I did hear that the RROD warranty is 3 years. BUT, you need PROOF of purchase.I Think The Might Had GAVE An Warranty Card With The Bill  You really just need your physical Xbox.
I had to send my xbox in for repair about a month ago.
All I did was read my serial number, they gave me a repair code, and I took it to the shop.
im sure there is some guides on youtube to do it i seen one to fix the RROD using 8 pennys , some electrical tape and some good old thermal compound i have never tried this, mainly cos i dont have a xbox but dont think it really works Quote from: blackrainbow on June 01, 2010, 02:55:48 AM

Solve : Google's logo today funny but sound gets annoying?

Answer»

Have you been to google.com today?  The PacMan logo is the first time I've ever seen them embed sound with a logo.  It was amuzing at first but I muted my sound after awhile.

I'm surprised they would embed the sound.  I can imagine some office workers overhearing the sound of PacMan on a co-workers computer.  The boss would be happy.  LOL.It's not just a logo, it's a playable version of the game.I thought so, although I did not figure out how to play it.Hard to think that it's created with JS.Yeah. Amazing. Didn't realize that EITHER until I tried to extract it from the webpage

According to Germick, the company worked with Pac-Man's publisher, Namco Bandai, to MAKE the project as realistic as possible. Yet the Google team, with the inspirational lead of Marcin Wichary, a Google senior user experience designer, built their version of the game from the ground up using JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.

Solve : MS-Outlook Resolve Method Bug?

Answer»

I am creating a distribution list from a spreadsheet.
I find that that I can ADD all of the recipients which are "known" to me except
those for whom I have more than one email address.
That is, '.Resolve' fails. Is there a way around this?
If the names of the recipients are the same in the multiple listings try abbreviating the 1st name in one while leaving the full name in the other...

But i have to ask...why would they need to recieve the mail in each mailbox anyways ? ?I don't have duplicate CONTACTS; I have some contacts which have more than one email address. Those are the ones for which "Resolve" fails. Quote from: patio on June 01, 2010, 06:55:59 AM

I must not understand the gist of your question. There are times when someone actually wants a letter sent to both of his addresses. Anyway, the object of my routine is to populate a new distribution list (from spreadsheet data) which, when done VIA VBA, requires a populated Recipient object. When I find a contact (in the spreadsheet) that I want to add to the newly forming dist. list "Resolve" fails if that contact has more than one email address.

Is it only in America? Because we have KFC here in Canada. Southern Fried Chicken is not a chain, it's a general term / description for preparing chicken a certain way (http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS304US305&q=southern+fried+chicken)Ohh...I was under the impression it is a KFC COMPETITOR. I've heard a lot of nasty things said about MS but never heard of anyone suggesting that MS violated the Constitution.I remember that the UK was doing some legal action because microsoft was forcing users to use IE at the beginning. After this was resolved, WIN7UK got canceled.

Solve : Stereo Assistance?

Answer»

Does anyone know of a board/forum similar to this, but could help me troubleshoot/repair a solid-state electronics issue? I'm having trouble with my amplifier and equalizer playing nice...

I've always had success here on computer issues, and on doityourself.com for home repair assistance.

Mind you, I have very limited knowledge of how any of this works. There are a number of forums for Vintage Stereo.  What do you have?  What is the problem?avsforum.comThanks; will check out avsforum.

Here's the dealio:

Have a CD player, CD recorder, cassette player/recorder, turntable, and receiver/amplifier running through Tape Monitor into my equalizer.

When I'm listening with equalizer "in", I sporadically get static through my left channel. If I take the EQ out, or turn off Tape Monitor, the static goes away.

So, for starters, does this indicate a problem with the amplifier? EQ? Should I start swapping patch cords willy-nilly? I'm guessing it's inside the EQ, but it COULD be a problem with the tape monitor function, no?

I have to move some furniture to get at all of this, so some thoughts on where to start would be great. Quote from: rjbinney on May 27, 2010, 09:26:17 AM

Without knowing the age of this equipment, it seems like a bad connection.  Dust gets into the switches and can create static.  Corrosion can do the same.  Sure, start swapping patch cords, left channel to right channel. When I say "static", I mean the channel cuts in and out, with a white fuzzy sound that is akin to static on a radio dial - more specifically, the sound when your dial is between stations.

Am I swapping out channels just to see if the issue migrates to the other speaker (that is, is dedicated to the channel)?

Should I pop her open and hit it with compressed air? I was presuming it was something electronical...

Thanks. Quote from: rjbinney on May 27, 2010, 06:10:44 PM

I know what the "static" is, I have a 40-year old Marantz, I repaired all the switches & controls that exhibited static with Corrosion Block.  Repaired automotive switches with the same stuff.  Swapping channels to see if the issue migrates or just unplugging & plugging "wipes" the contact area; same issue as computer memory and/or plug-in cards.  It might be "electronical" & it might not.  It's analog, not digital. It's a TEAC EQA-20.

What is this Corrosion Block and what do I do?

That's what I would do.  Always good to open it up every 20 years or so.  If you see a lot of dust, that's most likely the problem.
Corrosion Block
http://www.nocorrosion.com/corrosion-control.htm
http://www.westmarine.com/1/1/15102-corrosion-block-12oz-aerosol.htmlOK, that IS what I thought you were talking about.

I probably won't get a chance to pop it open til next weekend.

Why would corrosion explain the fact that it cuts out sporadically? Intuitively, I would think that corrosion would cause a continuous problem - that is, once I lost the channel (or started getting the white noise), it would remain in its failed state.

Will let you know what I find.

Thanks Quote from: rjbinney on May 28, 2010, 12:37:19 PM

I didn't say it was corrosion.  It could be oxidation or dust on the contacts.  This condition changes the RESISTANCE & capacitance of the device and can have a major effect on the electrical characteristics.  As I said before:  it's ANALOG, not DIGITAL.You're right, you didn't say it was corrosion... I just inferred it from your post. (You say "analog" like it's an insult, like "Democrat" or "Canadian"...)

Nevertheless, I would be surprised if it is dust, none of the equipment has ever shown buildup... But you never know. I was surprised when my wife WENT out with me on our first date - so stranger things have happened.

What I STILL don't understand, is, since there's nothing else has changed or moves, why the problem would be sporadic. I get how any type of corrosion (or oxidation, no BIG diff) could cause this problem, but intuitively it would make sense that once it's in its defect state, it stays in its defect state - not cutting in and out at random.

If there's a simple, layman's way of explaining that, I'd like to learn.

Thanks,

Solve : flash drive capacity?

Answer»

Is there an approximate rule of thumb as to how much music time can be STORED in flash drives per GB?

The specifications seem always to quote so many hundreds of songs - I want to store a collection of spoken word cassette tapes.  Well, manufacturers say that their flash drives can hold X number of songs, etc. but if you read the fine print, it says that they are assuming every song is about 3MB, so if each of your tapes are about 3MB each, the number should be pretty accurate. You might get more out of the drive space if you use small cluster sizes, when formatting the drive.  Opt for 512 byte cluster sizes.  Files are stored in "clusters" on a drive and using large cluster sizes result in "slack" or wasted space.  The last BIT of data in a file usually doesn't run to the edge of the last sector in the cluster that it's using, resulting in some wasted space.  No other data can use the left over space in the sector.  However, there's more "overhead" when processing the data when using small cluster sizes, so the trade off is in speed reduction.

Using large cluster sizes enables better speed, but more space is wasted because the amount of slack in the last sector of the cluster is larger, which as I said, other files cannot take advantage of, resulting in more wasted space over all, when comparred to using smaller clusters...The amount of "time" you can store depends on the bitrate, as well as the compression method used. a 5 minute MP3 encoded at 128kbps usually results in a 5MB file, so if you use 128kbps MP3 files, you can usually consider 1MB=1 minute.

If you prefer a lossless format, a 5 minute FLAC compressed file usually comes out to around 35MB or so (so around 7MB a minute), quite a lot larger. SINCE there isn't really a "sampling" done on it as there is on MP3 you can record in the same clarity you would get from a pure waveform. (note that a minute of waveform sound usually comes to several MB, depending on  the bitrate and so forth) Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 14, 2010, 05:52:25 AM

too long, didn't read

But anyway though, that's interesing...  I never download or store music so I'm not use to this kind of thing.. Time to brush up a little on audio technology...I say "approx" because I got those from my winamp library;

Aerosmith's "you see me crying" in my library is a 128kbps MP3, and it's 5:12 in length, and just over 5MB.

my FLAC was "Fireworks" by the tragically hip, which, while 4 minutes long weighs in at around 35MB.

my 128kbps MP3s were ripped years ago when my machine couldn't reliably play a higher bitrate (350Mhz processor); more recent rips are 320kbps, and even more recent I rip to FLAC, since it sounds unbelievably better, even when I use my comparatively crappy laptop sound.

Of course, not all 4 minute long FLAC files will be 35MB... just as not all 5:12 128kbps MP3 files will be 5MB; a completely silent track would be only a few bytes or kilobytes regardless of length for almost all compression algorithms, for example.

In this case, if it's being used for voice recording, 64kbps is usually quite usable. First, LET's assume you already have a method of converting the casette tapes to audio files; if so, you should get quite usable audio quality from 64kbps. In which case, you can generally expect to store about 2, maybe 3 minutes per MB.

a audio-casette is about 30-45 minutes per side, so two sides would make an hour and a half or so, which would take about 60MB, which quite a margin for difference from compression and so forth.

Thanks for all the replies to my query.  I must admit that most of the info given went right over my head!  No wonder the maker's spec is given in comparatively simple terms.

I've just ordered a tape-to-mp3 transfer device and my thinking is that when the cassette tape content is transferred to my PC (Windows Media Player), and shown as x minutes in length, then I would have some idea of the size (in MB) flash drive to get for storage.  I have a fair idea now and trial and error will tell me more when I start using the gadget.

Thanks again to all. Quote from: silkie on April 14, 2010, 12:43:40 PM

Click START, (the shinny pearl thingy) click Computer, rigth-click on the thumb drive, click "format", select what file system you want to use.  I recommend FAT 32 if you plan on using the drive in old versions of Windows, Linux, or MAC OS.  Under Allocation unit, select the 512 byte option, and click format.   Be sure there is no data on the drive, that you don't want to LOOSE...

If it's the fan, it's normal for it to come on when laptop is started. It is only the fan working for ten seconds the laptop does not fire up have put another
M/B in could it be any thing elseI believe (with all due respect) that you are confusing the issue with your answers. Let us try this:
1. Are YOU stating that it is the fan that is making the noise?
2.As has been stated it is NORMAL for a fan to run more aggressively at computer start up. However if it continues to function it will get quieter but still be running.
3.Can you determine if the fan continues to run or is it stopping? If it is stopping that "it goes off" is in reference to the computer shutting down. A fan FAILURE will often (for safety of over HEATING) shut the computer down. truenorthI reread Reply #5 (I usually skip over the "shouting").  It appears the laptop is dead.  He replaced the motherboard and it's still dead.Yes the laptop is dead apart from the fan starting up for ten seconds
the power light stays on, which is more than it did with the old M/B does any one know if there is any thing else that could cause this

Servers normally don't crash without any reason. So I'd say something was probably changed by accident.

BTW, Windows NT is really old - I would have have thought that servers today would run at least Windows 2000. I guess I was wrong. I'm sure you have, but I've got to ask, when is the last time you rebooted?

I had an NT server years AGO and every now and then it would do something strange and rebooting usually fixed the problem.

If that machine has been running for 11 years, you have more than got your monies worth out of it and you might start thinking of getting a new computer.

If you have custom software that only runs under NT, and you need to keep NT, and do get a new computer, keep in mind that a new install of NT needs a floppy drive to start the process before it starts loading from a CD. Quote from: rthompson80819 on May 27, 2010, 08:53:06 PM

Taking it literally, the last time it was rebooted was 1999!... And to think, linux users are proud when they exceed a week...

Actually, what you are referring to are called Control Buttons (I believe) the taskbar is where the start button and running programs are found.

I have to second rthompson- this is probably simply the result of the system running for a long time. Somehow, the GDI stack has become corrupted, and the STOCK handles that used to point to the min, max, and close bitmaps were corrupted.

Now, these bitmaps are cached when the window manager creates them for the first time. They are created the first time by drawing a raised square (or depressed or disabled square, depending on the button state) and then using the Marlett font to draw the Minimize, Maximize/Restore, and Close buttons at the proper size. This is of course a guess, really- it's fully possible that windows redraws the buttons and the font characters in their entirety as required, but I'd hazard a guess that they cache the bitmap to make redrawing faster.

In which case, the question is how to refresh that bitmap so it looks right? Well, one method could be to change the size of the "caption buttons" item in the Appearance Tab of Display Properties, Apply it, and then you can reset to the old size if desired.

If the buttons are drawn "from SCRATCH" whenever windows needs to, though, then chances are the font handle to the marlett font was corrupted (this is surely cached within GDI). In which case I haven't a clue how you can "force" it to draw properly. It might even be that the GDI heap is full and objects are becoming invalidated and or allocations are failing.

when i am typing my cursor will skip around randomly .  example:  logging in.  i start typing my log in name, maybe i get to the middle of it and next thing that happens is the cursor is in the middle of the area i just typed and the LAST letters of the name are inserted into the middle of the letters i was typing.  so it might look like this -- log in name is babycakes.  but when i am typing baby the cursor skips backwards and the word ends up looking like - bacakesby. or some other strange mixture.  another example.  say i finish the log in name babycakes, then tab down to the password and begin the password.  the cursor may skip back to the log in name inserting password letters into the log-in name.  other variations occur, all of it randomly.  and it isn't just happening on log in, its on anything that i may type, or any activity requiring the movement of the cursor.

Solve : MSDOS and drive/folder/file backup maintenance.?

Answer»

Isn't it amazing what you find on the internet. Never fails to surprise me. For instance - this site. Absolutely brilliant. Anyway to get down to my general problem. At this time I do not have a specific REQUEST but this could change as time goes on.

I recently purchased two external hard drives. The reason for this was that on one I would archive old files whilst the other would be used to backup current files. The software that came with the hard drives wasn't up to backing up my current files. My computer supports three hard drives which, in turn, are partitioned. In effect sixteen hard drives and it would be necessary, not only to backup files, but also whole drives.

Since the purchase I have tried the following software to run backups and schedule same,  Karen's Replicator, Microsoft SyncToy v1.2 and FreeFileSync. I like the idea of incremental backup, saves a great deal of time. In all cases I ended up with corrupt VOLUME files and invariably had to run ChkDsk to restore the indexes. The disk drives have been reformatted and the virus checks have proved negative.

So in a desperate bid to achieve a backup I have resorted to MSDOS. The following is the contents of one of my Bat files:

xcopy G:\*.*  y:\"My Backups"\Dir_G\ /s
exit

Two lines but very effective. In ADDITION, no volume corruption. So it appears I am on the right lines. For those interested the explanation behind the above is copy all files on Drive G: to Drive Y (the external hard drive) into folder 'My Backup' and into subfolder ‘Dir G’. No empty folders to be copied: /s.

There are three other Bat files similar to this one which I now run separately. However here’s where the problem arises. The next time I want to run a backup, I don't want it to take 59 minutes, as the above does, because having set the files up, they only need to be incremented.  Even delete files that no longer exist and should be removed from the backup.

Consequently two questions arise to which your answers would be favourably received.
1)   Is there software out there which would accomplish all of this, at a reasonable cost? And
2)   With a stout heart and the correct motivation is it possible to write the program to accomplish all that I desire using MSDOS?

Sorry for the long diatribe but if we can visualise the problem then the solution is at hand.
Thanks in ADVANCE.

Solve : best .MP3 Bit Rates for burning CD on to computer?

What is the best MP3 Bit Rates for burning CD music onto my hard drive. 192, 256, or 320 - I like music like Journey, Motley Crue, Dio, Ozzy. I want to play it on my portable MP3 CD Player. It depends on what quality satisfies you.
I use 128 and it's fine with me. The higher rate, the more space file takes.By 'burn', did you mean onto a CD?
Many audio CD players do not do MP3.
Some do. For compatibility, CD players with MP3 may expect the Sample rate to be 44.1kbps.
Which program are you USING to make MP3s?

I would rip the songs from the original Cd's to hard drive using .mp3 extension and than using data CD format burn them to blank CD-R to get alot more songs on the CD-R them with audio CD format. So what i'm asking is what is the best .mp3 bit rate to use to rip the original Cd's to hard drive 192, 256 or 320 i'm using Windows Media Player to rip the music to my hard drive - I have Windows 7 Home Premiumthere is no "best".

it's a trade off. Either good quality, takes up more space, or worse quality, but takes up less space.

regardless of what you choose it will still take up less space then the uncompressed audio data would.

Yes they do. Some entertainment devices that play audio and MP3 CD's require 44.1KHz  sample rate for both normal and MP3. Art the present time there is no MP3  standard that manufactures respect. Do you have a portable CD player that allows different sample rates?

If he is always going to play the CDs on his computer, it does not matter. If he wants to make a MP3 CD for a family member to play on a CD/MP3 boom box, it does matter.

Some do. For compatibility, CD players with MP3 may expect the Sample rate to be 44.1kbps.

44.1kbps != 44.1kHz. The sampling rate of a Audio CD is not 44.1kbps, it's 44.1Khz, as you correct. But this translates to 44.1Khz*16 bits per sample, or  705600bps or 705.6kbps.

it doesn't matter, because a MP3 can be played at WHATEVER desired sample rate (Khz). a MP3 that was originally an encoded 22Khz could be played on a CD player, because MP3 has no concept of sampling rate in Khz- it is purely a Bitrate, the bits are converted as desired by the playback device to whatever sampling rate is required. This is why I can configure winamp to play my 320kbps MP3's at 44.1Khz, 96Khz, 28Khz, or anything along those lines. the actual decompression from a stream of bits to a Audio stream is independent from the Sampling rate required for the output stream. Of course, CD MP3 decoders are generally more limited then those available for a computer. in general, the electronics on a CD player can play (and I BASE this off of the manual for a MP3 CD player that is 6 years old, doubtless the range and ability has improved in that time, and it was hardly a top of the line model, either.) 32khz,44.1khz or 48khz khz and encoded between 32Kbps and 224Kbps. Although my 320kbps MP3's played fine, so perhaps the described range is a conservative estimate.I am not doing the MP3 format burning much any more except for archival stuff. Primarily this is because as some have stated that some standalone players won't play them. So i do all mine in .wav now. cdr  discs are so cheap cost is really not a factor.
However when i used to do a lot of burning some time back my personal preferred format was "mp3pro" which was at less than half of the "normal" CD audio of 128. I was using it when it 1st came out as it was stated to be if anything slightly better in quality than normal Mp3. Have not checked recently but back then the software to record in that medium was free at the company web site. You could sure pack a lot of audio on a disc. I believe i was able to put something like 20  12inch both sides vinyl lps  on one cdr disc. My impression was that there was no detectable difference from 128 Mp3. However then you really had to search for a player that would play that format. They may be more prevalent now. For your guidance and info.truenorthHow can I explain this to you in plain simple words?
Use a sample rate of 44.1Khz when burning MP3 to a CD.

Yes, I meant 44.1Khz.

The term 'bps' is often used for data rate.
It means bits per second. Sorry for my slip.

The proffered data rate is 192 K bps for the MP3 to CD recording.

Some DVD players only read MP3 CD's recorded with 44.1Khz sample rate.

Today's Homework: Bauds and Bits do not always mean the same thing - Or do they?
Extra credit if you do a report on Claude Shannon
from Geek-9PM ANSWER, so it would be better to use 192Kbps instead of 256Kbps to rip in MP3 format music CD's to hard drive I have a Portable MP3 CD player - i ripped in both 192 and 256 and i hear not much of a change.

Solve : Cloning audio as well as video.?

Answer»

Hey there,
I recently started experimenting with hooking up my computer to my TV. I never had the chance or the hardware to do it until the other day and I managed to get everything except the audio to work perfectly for my intentions.

I am going to be doing a short marathon of "scary" games with a few friends watching and WOULD like to know if it is possible to clone the audio in a similar fashion to the video. Currently I can only PLAY audio through the TV or HEADPHONES separately and in order to switch I have to go into Realtek HD Audio Manager and choose a new default device in order to CHANGE it.

Relevant System Specs:
Gateway FX SERIES Computer, Windows 7 Home 64-bit, as far as I can tell the sound card is simply Realtek High Definition Audio(it comes with specialized drivers and software to make it emulate a Creative X-Fi sound card), I am unsure of the make of the television but it is a wide screen with HDMI inputs, using a HDMI-HDMI cable with an adapter for HDMI-DVI to connect the TV to my computer since my video card does not support HDMI.

Thanks in advance.

Solve : Component USB TV Tuner?

I can't find a GOOD USB Component TV tuner under $100. All of them are if you want to connect them to a monitor, NOT ONES you can connect to your computer and the USB ports on all of them are for use as a USB photo frame, not to connect to your computer or are PCI or PCI Express and I record on a laptop.
I have a ATI TV Wonder HD 600 USB but the HD CABLE box does not give a HD SIGNAL through Coaxial.
Is there a Component TV Tuner through USB for under $100? (To connect to your Computer as a TV tuner)

Solve : Terminology used is picture sizing?

Answer»

I'm a bit confused about picture sizing regarding the terminology used.
Hyperthetically, let's say l have a jpeg picture with a size of 1500kb,  and l want to reduce this to 1024kb.
Now every freebee resizing programs l've found say to change the "size" l have to type in new dimensions (nnn x nnn), which is what they refer to as size and not the kb value. - I'm confused!
How would l know what dimensions to type in to get it down to 1024kb, or is it just hit and miss?
Is there some formula then that l should be using relating to the kb and dimensions?
Although l've reduced pictures before using smaller dimensions, am curious as to how to do this using the kb value alone.
Thanks, and hope the above MAKES sense.

Forget about the file size of the edited image...
Just concentrate on making it the size you want.
Different image EDITORS will yeild different file size results...Thanks Patio m8, helpful as always.
I normally do just use the file dimensions themselves while tinkering.
But let's say l have a file size of 3072kb (if that is at all possible) and l want to mail it, but the limit is 2048kb. and winrar WONT compress it enough?
This is all hyperthetical, and l'm probably talking a load of bow locks, but am just curious.
Or should l just retire while the going is good?
Regards

You have to reduce to total number of pixels by approximately 1 third.  Just divide the x and y widths by 2.83, that reduces it by (approximately) a total of 1/3rd.I'm not sure what software you are using, but what I use is just the basic stuff that came with my HP camera.  In addition to changing brightness, colors, etc., one of the options is how much COMPRESSION you want to use.  The more compression, the smaller the file.  You can play around with that until you get a file size that fits your email. With uncompressed BMPs you can calculate the size: size in bytes = (width x height) x bytes-per-pixel. Plus a few bytes for the file header. However jpeg files are compressed so that there is no way to calculate the final file size resulting from a resize. You would just have to try various sizes until you got to or below your target file size. Also with jpeg there is another setting called "quality" which can be set from 0 to 99 usually. Jpeg compression is "lossy" that is it works by throwing away DETAIL. The more you throw away the smaller the final file size. Higher number here means larger file size.

Thanks everyone, always get an answer on here.
Will probably never do this via the "kb" route but now get the general idea between dimensions and size.
Thanks again

There are releases of other distros that have ARM variants, Ubuntu has an ARM compilation.

Not sure if the specs would be enough to run Ubuntu, though.

Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 13, 2010, 12:03:25 PM
The current FOLKS y thing is s we say Net Book for a very small hand-held device that is principally used to tie to the Internet
Most of these have the following specifications:
Solid-state storage of 2 GB.
A 7 inch color screen.
A WiFi adapter.
A QWERTY keyboard.
The Windows CE operating system.
An ARM processor like the 8505.

a System running windows CE is a handheld.

a "netbook" is just a fancy name for what is more appropriately called a "Sub-notebook" and notebook is just the trendy name for laptop. "notebook" used to mean what we now call a "tablet"... it's all rather convoluted. a handheld running CE will aways be smaller then what I would call a netbook. IMO a netbook has to be architecture compatible with their laptop brothers.

of course the distinction has blurred, but I think we can safely blame marketing for that.BC_Programmer  is right. That small 7 inch Net Book will not run any of the major Linux bistros. But it can run Android.
Best choice here is to make no attempt to changer it. Leave it like it is.

For those the want to learn more about the ARM concept of  small digital DEVICES, take a look here: http://www.arm.com/

As  can be seen from that site, thee is no attempt to play along with Microsoft. That is because the ARM people have there own market goals.
LYD, what you have bought is a LIMITED computer at a fair price, and your SON will learn a lot from it.  If he is going into IT at some point he will need a much more powerful computer, which will cost a lot more.  Maybe he can build his own.

Even though this netbook is limited, he will probably be using this machine for odds and ends for years to come even after he gets a more powerful machine.

Solve : computer slow and reboots itself?

Answer»

I have a HP Presario 523n. My OS is Windows XP SERVICE pack 3. I have 1536 mb of memory. The computer has a1.80 AMD Athelon XP processor.
My problems are that the computer reboots itself at times, and is very slow most of the time. You need to provide more information about the exact problem (not the computer) and when and how the rebooting occurs.

For now, go to System PROPERTIES - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart". Let's see if we can generate a blue screen error. If so, post the entire contents of that error screen here.Allan,
Thank you for the reply. I went in to system properties and unchecked the "start automatically".
The problem I'm having seems to be when I have to much running it reboots itself. There actually shouldn't be to much running but if you go to Task Manager it says that one process maybe using 95% of the CPU. It seems to operate most of the time with 100% of the CPU being used, making everything real slow and eventually rebooting the computer. And that process is.......? ? ?It doesn't have to be any one thing.  Just something running. Are you sure? Various processes will spike? What happened between the last time the system ran smoothly and the first time it did not (NEW hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?

For a start I suggest you run a full system scan with BOTH your av and MawareBytes.I can't think of anything new. I will do a system scan with av and malwarebytes and respond tomorrow. If a blue screen happens to pop up I will also leave content of it here. I thank you for all your HELPYOU're welcome, but so far I'm afraid I really haven't been any help.

Solve : Oh nooooo!?

I was having problems with my computer crashing all the time so I called HP Technical Support. They decided the best thing to do would be to do a full system recovery. As my files were all backed up with McAfee I thought that would be fine. But it turns out McAfee never backed any files up like it was supposed to.

I've heard that even after deleting files they will STILL be somewhere on the hard drive. This was a full system restore back to factory SETTINGS. So is there any chance my files will be still be there? And, if there is, how would I go about finding them.

I didn't think anything would stay on the disk but I figured that people on here might be able to tell me if it's possible. You COULD try Piriform Recuva, the odds are stacking up against you each time you use the computer though.  Recuva will work better if you don't recover the data to the same drive. Patio, I was using McAfee and thought that they would do the backup but a friend I was talking to had the same problem as me. I unfortunately don't have the money at the moment for an external hard drive or a decent online backup otherwise I would have done that already.

Exactly my situation some years ago.

I QUICKLY learned that the source code for about 40 of my programs that took three years to write was worth more then a small hard drive. I imagine the same sort of thing goes for most of the stuff people make themselves- their documents aren't just files, but they represent hours of effort. You're not backing up files- you're backing up effort.

If you just bite your lip and hope that drives won't fail, that you won't accidentally delete files, that a program won't delete your files, etc, you are way too susceptible to murphy's law then what should be considered comfortable.

Besides, you don't necessarily need an external drive- CD-R's are rather cheap, and DVD-R's and DVD-RW's can be used as well, depending on how much you need to back up.

Remember, it's not about backing up any of the programs you have installed, or your system configuration- that type of stuff usually only takes a few minutes to set back up if you have to reinstall- it's the major time investments like you're documents that are important. As BC stated there is no excuse...

I personally use Acronis True Image but it is not Free...
However Macrium Reflect is....

Solve : Graphics/Photo Printing?

Answer»

Hello:

Desktop running win7 using CorelDraw and an hp deskjet printer.

When I print photos along with a lot of graphics on the same page, the photos don't come out so well.  For example: When I print photos with FRAMES drawn around and drop shadows behind, the photos come out with light streaks and lower resolution.  However, if I delete the frames and drop shadows, the photos print fine.  Now if I turn the whole thing into a bitmap, it prints ok but detail is lost in the conversion.

I suspect there's SOMETHING technical I don't understand?  I have two hp printers and they both do the same thing.  I wonder if a high-end printer WOULD make a difference?  Perhaps someone with desktop publishing EXPERIENCE can help me?

Thanks,

Solve : Valuable Antiques??

Answer»

What do you think, will our old computers become valuable antiques of the future? Should I start seeking out a Win 3.1 system to make my fortune in the future?
Just an IDLE thought! No.That's my plan to be a billionaire scuppered!  If you had one of these it might be worth some money.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Z3_%28computer%29

Interesting article on some of the history of computers.Do mechanical analog computers count?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norden_bombsightOld PCs:

Original IBM PC (1981)

The PC that started the whole craze almost 3 decades ago isn't worth much today, even to antique dealers. A Model-T Ford still gets a raised eyebrow of respect in Sunday parades, but the original IBM PC is worth less then a BRADY Bunch Lunch box.

Several owners have raised the price of their Originals by turning them into Lamps. 30 dollars each doesn't quite make up for the 10 thousand or so that was paid for each one, but that's deprecation for you. Besides, they save money they owuld have spent on a lamp for the side of the bed.

IBM XT:

A mega-improved version of the original. It took twenty engineering teams to design this new PC. They each won a award for engineering excellence when they placed a "reset" button on the front of the case. No longer did the users have to reach into the jungle of wires behind their PC every 15 minutes when the computer froze inexplicably! They were each given handsome bonuses and forced into exile, so that no other company would learn the secret engineering techniques involved with putting reset buttons on the front of the case.

owners of these PCs have also been able to create light fixtures from these old PCs. The most profitable (about 50 dollars) means wiring the reset button as the light switch. This makes a great lamp for the side of the bed.

Now, all that being said, there could be money in it yet! A GERMAN CALCULATOR from the 1820's fetched $11.8 Million at an auction at Christie's in London, a record auction price for a scientific instrument. How many calculators have you thrown away over the past ten years? (Including the free ones included with magazine subscriptions?)

The Altair, the first Personal Computer, is now selling for thousands of dollars as a collector's item.

Your IBM=PC, XT,286 or 386 would have to be passed down for several generations before it can be cashed in as a collectible. And your great-grandchildren will always remember you as a techno-weenie. But at least they might be able to live comfortably.I've heard that the old eight inch floppy drives and disks can be worth some money.I have a few OLD computers:

Acorn BBC Micro - 1981
Sinclair ZX81 - 1981 (I Think)
Acorn Archimedes 310 - 1989
Acorn A5000 - 1992
Ambra Sprinta (Windows 3.1, 486SX, 4mb RAM) - 1992

All still WORK!  BBC Micro is actually a hybrid of two broken ones - One had dead PSU, other had dead motherboard!

They can all (Except for Ambra Sprinta) can be found on Google.
