Answer» 20 mb download pipe Darknet - The Darkside | Ethical Hacking, Penetration Testing ...OK . I get the impression that this maybe an illegal feed ? Quote from: maccos on May 09, 2010, 03:53:14 AM Thankyou salmon. I have no idea yet. These are the requirements to recieve the feed. What is this dark net business ? Why won't you answer this question? Quote What are you trying to do? Quote from: maccos on May 09, 2010, 04:12:23 AM OK . I get the impression that this maybe an illegal feed ? Since you provide no information (see above) we cannot tell. I am trying to recieve some pictures direct to the pc of live sporting events which are supposedly faster than the majority of viewers recieve. Not by much but in horse racing terms maybe half a furlong b4 other viewers. This can obviously be quite lucrative if you know what you betting on in regards to front runners or deep closers etc etc. Just didnt understand the computer requirements. Still dont understand this freenet darknet business but i have a handle on the rest of it. Quote from: maccos on May 09, 2010, 04:30:47 AM I am trying to recieve some pictures direct to the pc of live sporting events which are supposedly faster than the majority of viewers recieve. So you want to cheat bookmakers by hacking closed feeds. That makes you potentially a criminal fraudster. No m8. I dont want to hack anything. Its about the speed of pictures. I just want to understnd the mechanics of the requirements. Its the same feed which goes into the exchange shops which are primarily occupied by In Running punters. Problem is these shops are few and far between and are not viable to travel to on a daily basis. That is all. I have been offered the service for a fee and just wanted to comprehend the required COMPONENTS. The In Running market is not a bookmaker led industry. It is an arbing haven for punters that want to protect or speculate further while the event is in play. The speed of the pictures is just a bonus tbh. The real skill is being able to interpret what is unfolding b4 you.It sounds a bit hole-in-the-corner if you are having to use the Darknet, are being cagey about the origin of this "offer", and think that seeing a race "half a furlong" before the other punters is going to be "lucrative". To repeat, I smell fraud of some sort here. Whether you are the potential perpetrator or victim I am not quite sure. Quote from: maccos on May 09, 2010, 04:44:43 AM an arbing haven I told you. Crooked. I am not understanding your stance here salmon. I only wanted to discover the PROS and cons / working logistics of this b4 getting involved. Quote from: maccos on May 09, 2010, 04:53:33 AM I am not understanding your stance here salmon. I only wanted to discover the pros and cons / working logistics of this b4 getting involved. My "stance" is that we don't just give out technical advice or info here, regardless of the what the enquirer wishes to do, we have an ethical/moral/legal standpoint as well. Some of that standpoint is enshrined formally in the rules of the forum, which you were expected to read and assent to as a condition of joining. A number of these rules concern what I shall call "hacking". Without getting into an argument about the meaning of the word, I shall define this as "doing something you shouldn't". There are some things that are definitely on the 'bad' side of the line: downloading, installing and using copyrighted or illegal material, spamming, creating and/or spreading adware, viruses, get-rich-quick schemes, etc. There are others that are in a grey area. Often we get questions which make (some of) us smell a rat. These tend to be where the OP phrases their question in vague terms and is cagey about what they want to do. Since we are not morally neutral, we tend to ask for more information. It seems entirely understandable that whether that information is forthcoming, and if so, its nature, is bound to govern what our response is. People often use the dark net to do things that they don't want traced back to their IP address, and that fact, coupled with your use of words like "arbing" makes me think that you may be either the perpetrator or victim (or as is so often the case, a victim who is being led to believe he is joining the perpetrators) of a fraudulent scheme. Also, if the sports feeds are legally available to you, why do you need to have a freenet node? Ok fair comments. The feeds are not available in the format which is being offered. I had no comprehension of what was required in order to recieve the feed and therefore posed the opening questions. That is all, nothing more nothing less. I still have no real idea what this frenet / darknet business is all about but I do appreciate your time in trying to assist in me finding out. Sorry if I have wasted your time |

Solve : Hardware Bottlenecks potential? |
|
Answer» HI. On my Lappy, I have been wondering about the folowing. What out of the of the CPU - DRAM - HD, WOULD likely be the most to bottleneck. Just throwing this one up for general curiosity really?Without any component specs this is impossible to answer...Patio is right. We need more info on the existing system to help you. Alan <>< Sorry Forgot. CPU - T9400 2.5Ghz on X10 multi HD - Samsung HM251JJ SATA DRAM - PC3 8500F (533) X2 - 2Gig Pairs.Bottleneck? For that CPU... the bottleneck, if any, ... is the software, not the hardware. http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=35562Sorry but it's just a silly question Yeah I know. Just thought I would pose it because I was thinking of something else as WELL. Quote from: Tim_Cdy on May 06, 2010, 12:51:13 PM Yeah I know. Just thought I would pose it because I was thinking of something else as well.Penny for your thoughts. I was thinking how the SpeedStep function would affect overall Vista 64 performance. On a multi of X6 as apposed to one of X10, surely that must affect windows performance of executing system commands? No I am SERIOUSLY interested in your response? Quote from: Tim_Cdy on May 07, 2010, 01:28:30 PM I was thinking how the SpeedStep function would affect overall Vista 64 performance. On a multi of X6 as apposed to one of X10, surely that must affect windows performance of executing system commands? No I am seriously interested in your response? It shouldn't affect the performance at all, as the MULTIPLIER will step up when necessary. If the system is forced into low power or battery saving mode then the CPU will always run at the 6X multiplier, which will affect performance in CPU-intensive tasks, yes. As for your original question, different components will bottleneck you in different areas.Thanx. The former. I was just wondering to myself really, what would be the candidate. Your awnswer is what I was wondering. You're welcome.I meant to say thanx at the end. The point you made about the low battery/power state, did not occur to me. I now know otherwise |

Solve : A sSftware Patent? Can I get one?? |
|
Answer» What is a software patent? Can trust anybody for a software patent? Quite frankly, I don't really know the answer. Nor do I have enough knowledge and experience to even make an intelligent statement. But I am sure that will not stop the rest of you. So come on, tell me what I need to know about software patents. For a starter, I am going to quote part of an article from someone who is much more qualified than me. And for that matter, is much more qualified than most anybody I could think of. His name is "Dan" Bricklin. Daniel Singer "Dan" Bricklin (born 16 July 1951) is the American co-creator, with Bob Frankston, of the VisiCalc spreadsheet program. He also founded Software Garden, Inc., of which he is currently president, and Trellix Corporation, which is currently owned by Web.com. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Quote Dan Bricklin's Web Site: www.bricklin.com Please take a look at what Dan has to say. He has been deeply involved in the issue himself. Still, it's hard to understand the concept of how you can write a piece of software and then claim that nobody else has the right to do anything like it. But maybe that's not what he really said. How do you understand? I am NOT going to tell thee my idea 'till they wax me patent.I don't get it... If a patent is what you want they can be had ...for an undetermined amount of cabbage depending on which lawyer you speak with... Software patents are really kind of a joke. There are very few software ideas that are really new, mostly just improvements on previous ideas and concepts. That doesn't mean that there aren't many, many software patents filed each year. The patent office hasn't kept up with technology, and as long as lawyers get paid to file patent claims there will be patent claims for all kind of bogus issues. There are a number of companies that file dozens of patents with no real products involved, and they are hoping that in the future some other company will use a similar technology that they can then sue for patent infringement. I remember several years ago, Amazon tried to claim patent rights to "one click". They eventually backed off of that claim. Quote from: rthompson80819 on May 01, 2010, 05:01:55 PM Software patents are really kind of a joke. There are very few software ideas that are really new, mostly just improvements on previous ideas and concepts.Thank you! That was a great idea! Oh how I wish I had thought of that! Quote US Patent Office Decides That One Click Really Is PatentableMaybe that was a joke? I don't get it either. Quote from: rthompson80819 on May 01, 2010, 05:01:55 PM Software patents are really kind of a joke. There are very few software ideas that are really new, mostly just improvements on previous ideas and concepts.Yeah! Totally! like how how the fluorescent lightbulb is really just a improvement over the incandescent LIGHT, or how that was itself just an improvement over the lantern (I don't think lanterns had a patent). The thing I don't get is, patent's have been on ideas. wether the manifestation of that idea is physical or consists of computer code is largely irrelevant- either way, somebody needs to implement it; with a physical object you can follow the patent documents and create the patented item- you need to pay royalties, of course. Same story for software patents- somebody comes up with, say a new way of hashing that is even better then SHA-2, they patent it- and anybody else can buy the documentation of that patent and build that new has algorithm. Of course, Open Source has a problem with this- since they have, in general, this idea that every single piece of code ever developed should be shared in a communal fashion- that is, that the creator of the new hash function should just give away the algorithm free of charge. Now, I'm no expert, but if somebody is going to work for years on something, be it a physical invention or a code-complete one, I'm PRETTY sure they aren't doing it just for that warm fuzzy feeling they get when they release it for free. Much as Edison, and many other inventors, made off their inventions, so too should the inventors of new concepts- new algorithms... new, inventions in software. Quote There are a number of companies that file dozens of patents with no real products involved, and they are hoping that in the future some other company will use a similar technology that they can then sue for patent infringement. This was the case before computers and software patents. thankfully these companies didn't have very good foresight into the future. Of course, all that being said, the software patents being filed are becoming all too frivolous. The one-click example mentioned makes a good example- as you can see in the actual USPO file: http://v3.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?CC=US&NR=5960411&KC=&FT=E While the method is outlined, it's rather vague- and to be honest, it's actually kind of obvious, and would probably be what anybody else would do in that situation. It's like patenting walking up your walkway and forcing everybody to either walk on the grass or pay royalties. The thing is, for physical patents, this situation never arises- you cannot patent, for example, a 4 legged chair, because everybody has been using them for ages, and it's common sense to find previous works. Software is more fleeting- it's hard to find previous works for a given software patent- this doesn't mean they don't exist. I think software patents are fine for things like the previously mentioned "super hash function"- because if it TOOK 20 or so years for somebody to think of this new hash that os more powerful then any devised, chances are it isn't going to be stumbled on by anybody else anytime soon. The patent filing itself allows anybody to view the patent, as well- the patent filing will include a description of the algorithm, that any licensee can use to create their own implementation. I might also point out that the patent was refused in Canada due to a provision added in 1993 (around the start of the whole "software patent" era (was this the year Unisys patented GIF?) which adds the requirement that an invention be not obvious in light of prior art. Also, they made strong statements about the patentability of "business-method patents"- there is an article here. In fact, Canadian patent law specifically excludes the patenting of computer programs at all: Quote The list of prohibited matters notably differs from the United States. With respect to patents for software, while mere algorithms are not patentable per se (mere algorithms may be protected by Canadian copyright law), software may be protected by Canadian patent law if it meets the traditional criteria for patentability (that is, it must be new, non-obvious and useful). In other words, if for example the software is new and non-obvious, it would be patentable in Canada if the software directly provided a functional real world useful result (and not merely the calculation of a mere algorithm). So, going back to my example of a newfound hash algorithm, the read-world useful result would be increased difficulty to find hash collisions, which translates into increased security across the board for everything that uses the method- therefore, it would probably be patentable. Now, of course, if such an algorithm is conceived and patented, open source advocates will be arguing with zeal that it should be free and not require the payment of royalties. My answer is, of course, "why?" If the original author didn't patent it or release it all, nobody would be able to argue about wether it should be released freely, and certainly none of them would have come up with it, they are far too busy tinkering with their Linux boxes. Basically, their argument is against the very core of a capitalist society. Consider for a moment Tetris. Almost Everybody has played that game. Everybody I've asked thinks it made the original creator rich. Well, it didn't, since the inventor was in the U.S.S.R. all the money went "to the people" (the government) and while Alexey got a nice warm feeling and a couple "Excellent job comrade!"'s, he didn't see a dime of it. Of course, this was a licensed product- the USSR held the patent and rights to the game in several countries, and they even licensed it to MULTIPLE companies simultaneously (notably Tengen and Nintendo) LEADING to a dispute that went all the way down to the exact person who sold the rights to each company. You're in Canada and I have a question for you- of sorts, that is. OpenBSD, have you tried it? What's the distributed use of it in Canada? Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 04, 2010, 07:48:40 AM Totally! like how how the fluorescent lightbulb is really just a improvement over the <patented> incandescent light, or how that was itself just an improvement over the lantern (I don't think lanterns had a patent). The fluorescent light bulb produces light physically in a very different way than the incandescent bulb. It's not just an improvement, but a totally different way to produce light. BTW, lanterns have many patents. http://www.lanternnet.com/patents.htm |

Solve : A rant on ink cartridges? |
|
Answer» Right soybean, it MUST be the ingenuity. I tried filling my cartridges too and all I did was create a mess. When i find a service or a product i feel confident in i readily pass that info on to othersOK, you apparently feel confident about some particular ink seller. Would care to share their name/website with us?Absolutely i would be more than happy to do that. In the past i have made that information AVAILABLE to those that PM'd me. This was only done in the context of i do not want to be perceived as perhaps being a commercial interest associated with this business. But if it is not found to be objectionable i certainly will do so. I AWAIT comment--meanwhile anyone interested can PM me.truenorthThe only reason that refilling wouldn't work is because manufacturers purposely- (I'd even go so far as to say maliciously) design their cartridges to prevent them from ever being refilled. It is this extra "design initiative" that puts up the cost of the cartridges that makes you want to refill them in the first place. Actually, Printers/Cartridges and their manufacturers are simply trying to follow the age old disposable method pioneered by gillette; sell the Razor itself for cheap, and make a profit from the blades. The printers probably cost at least 10 times as much to manufacture as they are being sold for- and the cartridges cost about 10 times less. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 05, 2010, 06:43:06 PM sell the Razor itself for cheap, and make a profit from the blades. Actually, Gillette has taken that philosophy to the next level. I got one of their latest razors in the mail for free, I didn't ask for it, and don't know what mailing list they got my name from. But when I saw the cost of replacement blades, that razor went straight into the trash. |

Solve : Thinking about setting up a computer repaire businees from home on small scale.? |

Answer» Hi i am THINKING about setting up my own computer repaire service from home. As I don't want to run it inside the house I was thinking about runing it from a shed. no just wondering what legial issues are involved you're basically asking if you might need a lawyer? For buying a shed?Check with your municipal office for the requirements. Bylaws, licenses, etc.truenorth Think we otta cage this PUPPY before it runs wild?Personally i'd go for This One... Solve : Best operating system in this case? |
|
Answer» My sister has an old laptop that I'm going to start using. The laptop currently runs win vista but it is quite slow in its running. I am going to use the laptop mainly for writing essays and so on when I am way from my desktop and maybe sometimes browsing. My desktop will be the main thing I will use which is running win 7. If you're running an old laptop just for essay writing and browsing, I recommend Ubuntu.Ubuntu is a good choice. Quote It should perform better than Win 7/XP as well.Pure conjecture. Also using the word "perform" here is sufficiently vague that it's easy to make up definitions that both support and argue the claim. EDIT: just say the part in the Original post where it is running Vista- if it came with Vista, it probably just needs a "tune-up" so to speak to get things running again. If UAC has been disabled there is no doubt in my mind that the entire thing is completely infested with viruses. (which would explain why it's slow). Of course, a clean install of Vista/7 will be a lot better then loading from whatever recovery CDs were included with the system. Maybe you should consider fixing up that laptop as well. I got my older sister's 3 year old laptop about a year ago and that thing ran really slow at first. But after I opened it up and went to town on the heat sink and fan with an air can that thing ran like new again. We still have no specs on this machine... Speculation is great though. Quote from: patio on May 03, 2010, 07:16:57 PM We still have no specs on this machine...Yeah, it may only have 1GB of RAM. My Compaq notebook PC which I purchased in July 2007 has Vista and originally had 1GB of RAM. I later increased that to 2GB. As you KNOW, you can test drive Ubuntu without removing the current OS from the hard drive. http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 03, 2010, 09:35:15 PM As you know, you can test drive Ubuntu without removing the current OS from the hard drive. If you've enough hard disk space, you may consider dual-booting as well. You could eliminate either of the OS's at any time, if you choose. Quote you may consider dual-booting as wellYes, the newest versions of Ubuntu use WUBI, which installs a custom bootloader to the main OS and allows you create a virtual partition of a specified size. You can then choose to load either Windows or Ubuntu at startup. This makes it a lot easier to use two OSs.Depending on the hardware if your looking for speed and performance you might also consider trying to use CrunchBang http://crunchbanglinux.org/. It is very lightweight and has may program preloaded for anything you need. Very small footprint. Just a suggestion. Has a live cd as well so you can try it before you install. or, you could flip a coin. What software do you use for writing your essays? Quote from: Aegis on May 04, 2010, 06:38:37 PM What software do you use for writing your essays? This would be crucial, if a word processor is used then it won't matter but if certain proprietary software is being used then that could rule out certain operating systems. I would say that you should go for Ubuntu or Linux Mint. It's free and can easily do the basics you need. If you don't mind installing support for dvd playback and other media files (which can be slightly tricky) then go for Ubuntu. If you don't/can't install the media codecs yourself go for Linux Mint (which is Ubuntu-based) although it will run slightly slower. I would go for Ubuntu, even if you have problems with media codec installation or something else Ubuntu has a HUGE user community that can HELP you. The latest version of ubuntu is very cool, it has 10 second boot, 2GB free online STORAGE, new theme etc. I say: go with Ubuntu Ummmmm He hesn't been back.... Carry on. |

Solve : I am looking for some guidance around mobile internet :)? |
|
Answer» Hi I am looking for advice and info around mobile internet (in Canada). I'm moving in a couple of days, and have a 2 week wait for my phone & internet to be hooked up. I am hoping for a temporary option to tide me over. Tried doing RESEARCH online, but have no knowledge base in this area and am lost! I'd like to get online at home rather than the library or cafe, and do not mind paying for this, but still have a budget I'm also wondering if a cell for a modem (need to get a cell) might be an option? I would be very grateful for any help!WELCOME both to the CH FORUMS and to Canada. Basically what you have is a time delay due to the time it takes for you to order and the company to install your chosen (available) internet connect-ability resource. If you already own a mobile internet device that can communicate over the web then the only LIMITATION is access to an available transmit/receive internet infrastructure. Unfortunately if it ain't where you are it will necessitate you going to where it is. Maybe you will be lucky and have close by neigbour (note the Canadian spelling eh!) that has a DSL access and then you won't have to go to a "hot spot". truenorth |

Are we talking about keyboard keys on a laptop? Are they dedicated volume keys or keyboard keys with dual function? If the latter, you probably have to press the Function Key along with the volume key. Just guessing here because your post doesn't provide much information. |

Does ANYONE know how to do this? I'm sure it's probably simple and I'm making it harder than it is. Any help will be appreciated. |

Solve : Resizing pictures.? |
|
Answer» I have to re-size some pictures to post on an other site. They are some pictures of some air brushed art work. Each picture is about 3MB in size. I need to reduce them to be ABLE to post them. I think you can only post 1200KB. How do I do that? Thank you much for your time. I don't know what I would do with out this site. You people have helped me with so much stuff.Open the file in MS Paint, resize the picture, and save.Quick fix. Thank you much Allan, that worked fine. Geek I down loaded the app and it is bugging me to buy it. I think I will stick with Allan's way. Thank you both for the information and your time.No. Don't buy the app. Just do it online with the free demo service. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 30, 2010, 01:18:16 AM No. Don't buy the app. Just do it online with the free demo service. Or, just use paint.Or, download a freeware photo editor; many are available and they would all be nicer to use for resizing than Paint. Here are some freeware options: http://www.freewarehome.com/index.html?http%3A//www.freewarehome.com/Graphics/Graphic_Manipulation/Image_Resizing_t.htmlWow - solving a problem after it was solved. Did I make a WRONG turn and end up at Neowin? What is everybody's problem with paint? no additional download, and it does exactly what they want in a few mouse ACTIONS. I know it can be done with Paint but Paint is a clunky tool to use for resizing, in my opinion. Here's why (I'm referring to Paint with Win XP). From the Image menu, if you try the Attributes tool, that does not scale-down the whole image, it just cuts a portion of the original out. Clearly, that's not what's wanted here. So, the tool to use to resize the whole image is Stretch/Skew but it does not allow the user to specify the new size in pixels; it works with percentages and that is the clunky part I don't like. I'd rather be able to specify the new size in pixels. In pain go to Image Stretch/skew. Go to the attribute place in paint also. If you want to get a nicer image program, buy Adobe Photoshop.WARNING: takes time getting used to. You don't need to buy the newest version either. If you don't want to be professional, use paint. If you don't want to be professional, use paint. That's an absurd recommendation. As I previously stated, there are many freeware photo editing programs that are nicer to use for resizing than Paint. And, don't cameras come with software nowadays? I haven't bought a digital camera for a long time. My old Fuji camera came with FinePix Viewer photo software that has batch resizing capability, which works quite well.I down loaded one of the freeware apps and it works faster than paint. I guess I will stick with that one. Oh the first one on the list to down load is the one that wants you to buy it after the down load. Thank you much for your help and time.Irfanview......FREE. |

Solve : Cheap RAM? |

Answer» I live in British Columbia. Does anyone know where I can find cheap RAM? EBay is good for a lot of things, but I don't think electronics, particularly used, is one of them.Fair enough, each to their own. I've had no trouble with Ebay for any items I've purchased, but I do practice common sense such as buying from reputable sellers with good feedback and returns policies, just as I would with any other retailer. Solve : April monthly poll - When was the last time you cleaned your computer?? |
|
Answer» i found that the best way to clean the computer is to use hydracloric acid Assuming that you are referring to hydrochloric acid you had better be awful CAREFUL. The fumes are deadly and among other THINGS (my experience) this acid is used to clean and strip radiator headers and prepare gas tanks for repair. Never used unless absolutely required. What parts of a PC could possibly require cleaning with HC?I think the at the end of his post means he was not serious. I'd say absolutely do not use hydrochloric acid. Gotcha.a few months back with a damp 1/2" paint brush , but only because i had to , no other reason I teach computer classes at a HS/Mid school. I don't even clean them a lot. I just take Animal Pak vitamins and use hand sanitizer. So far they haven't transmitted their sicknesses to me the vitamins will help a lotI last cleaned mine last weekend when I rebuilt it. I keep my room fairly dust free and my dust filters keep most dust out of my case, I wipe the front panel down every day or so to stop it getting clogged up and even after a few months, dust inside the case is negligible, so I don't need to do it often.I am clean mine every few weeks cause I'm obsessive compulsive that way. Solve : New CH display problem? |

Answer» For the past few days I've noticed that when I click on "show all new posts" and if there is only one new topic, the boxes on the right ("started by", "views", "replies", "last post" are all blank. This HAPPENED with both IE8 and Firefox 3.6. I'm attaching a screen shot. If there is more than one topic listed, everything is fine. This happened with both IE8 and Firefox 3.6.Argh....sorry, long day.Where is "show all new posts"?It's actually "all unread posts". I'm sure everyone understood. This happened with both IE8 and Firefox 3.6. I'm attaching a screen shot. If there is more than one topic listed, everything is fine.I can see it fine in IE Allan. Maybe a plugin or something?I don't get the same behaviour but the titles are offset from where they should be (the started by, replies, etc text) . It shows up fine in FF however. it took some doing to get my unread topics down to one- it was either clear them and wait for a single new one or go through them all, I went with the latter. This behavior was noticeable for me on two different systems - a laptop on which I use IE8 and a desktop on which I use Firefox. So it's not a setting or browser specific. But again, it's really not important - just thought I should mention it in case there were others experiencing the same anomaly. Guess it's just me - no biggie.Just tested this on IE6 and it looked fine...so it can't be the site. Heh. Although you checked with two different browsers on two different computers, it could still be a setting that both browsers (or computers) share. This doesn't appear to be an ISSUE for anyone else, but if it bothers you at all, you could try comparing your settings for the two browsers and looking for anything they have in common. Or perhaps it was just a fluke... Does it still happen?Haven't seen it yet this morning. I'll post back if and when it happens again. Note that it happened on the laptop on Sunday and the desktop yesterday. |

Solve : Best USB TV tuner under $60 supporting Component video? |
|
Answer» Right now I have a ATI TV Wonder 600 USB but I can't get HD if I linked it to a HD Cable box through Coaxial. The cable box said It supported component HD output but I don't know which TV tuner will support Component HD video (Has to be 720p) with a USB output and is under $60 (My budget is tight but I will sell the old tuner if the new one works). I have a USB TV-tuner that supports component, but it was around 150$ when I bought it.None come for $60 but I can get one for $80 and sell some old stuff.Yes. The good ones are not cheap. The bargain ones have something missing. And they don't tell you all that is missing. Is this for use in the USA or Canada? Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2010, 03:56:25 PM Is this for use in the USA or Canada? Won't matter. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 26, 2010, 04:00:08 PM Won't matter. In the USA most areas are all digital. Some translator (repeaters) are still analog. The ads for TV tuners do not make this very clear. So be careful. And even the ones that are digital may not cover cable assignments.A lot of cable systems still carry analog, or NTSC, video to be compatible with older TV sets, although this is being phased out little by little. To cover all possibilities, you need a card that does ATSC, NTSC and clear QAM. With a card like this you could bypass the cable box except for premium services like HBO, etc. Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2010, 06:49:28 PM In the USA most areas are all digital. Some translator (repeaters) are still analog. The ads for TV tuners do not make this very clear. So be careful. Most areas in Canada are digital too. Including where I am. and my TV tuner, which states "NTSC/ATSC/QAM HD TV receiver" still works fine. I imagine that's for the same reason rthompson (and yourself) STATED, in that the analog SIGNAL is still present. However, this theory falls apart (at least for me) because none of the older TVs work without a converter box. therefore, where I am, (if not clear yet, this is Canada) has been switched to digital (which means, the TV tuner is receiving QAM input). Therefore, most areas across North America are now using Digital rather then Analog reception.(It not exclusive to the US) I purchased this adapter in Canada and use it in Canada and I see no reason why it would not work in the US or why a Tuner bought in the US wouldn't work in Canada, therefore it doesn't matter. Also: turns out I lied, it doesn't have component input. it can take S-video and RCA, but not component (YyCbCr, or something similar)What I want to say is watch out for cheap tuners. They may not conform to the new standards. It may say it is for use in USA and Canada. But it fact it would be deceptive to sell such a device if it requires an additional external box. Been there, done that. Just bought a real cheep DVD tuner recorder player. Turns out it only receives analog. Had to put it on the cable. And even then it only gets the analog channels. So I can only record about half of what the cable company gives me. To make matters worse, earlier I bought a very nice VHS /DVD recorder play with Digital input and outputs. But it did NOT have a tuner! And Wally mark tells me they no longer carry the tuner that goes with it! Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 26, 2010, 11:10:46 PM What I want to say is watch out for cheap tuners. They may not conform to the new standards. It may say it is for use in USA and Canada. But it fact it would be deceptive to sell such a device if it requires an additional external box. It's almost never a good idea to buy cheap- especially for electronics.Th last I read was that Canada's digital TV conversion was scheduled to be complete by August 2011. Probably, the bigger cities are going FIRST. I would also guess that, like in the US, translators are exempt from the digital rules. I don't know for sure but I would guess that Canada has a lot of translators. For the most part, only people that live in extremely rural areas even know what a translator is. It is a very low powered relay station for TV signals that takes a signal from a standard broadcast station and retransmits it into rural areas. In the US most translators are still broadcasting analog, or NTSC, video.BC, that would make a good consumer warning label. Quote ** WARNING. ** |

Solve : Need Dual Boot Feature? |
|
Answer» I have windows seven installed and used partition wizard to create partition. I then installed xp thinking or maybe hoping in the back of my mind it would be in the dual boot mode but that didn't happen. oops, only way i know to learn is try and this one didn't work out just right................ But there is no shortcut for doing a dual boot system when you start out the wrong way. It's easier one way then the other. that's it. you could install NT4 and use the NT4 boot loader and still run a triple boot with NT4, XP and Vista if you really wanted to. you'd need to extract boot sectors to separate files though, or, install each on it's own drive set as master, and then tell NT to simply boot from that drive in boot.ini. Quote Microsoft has determined that the evolution of Windows should be upward, not downward. Otherwise, they would have released THE ULTIMATE Windows many years ago and gradually worked us down to Windows version zero. misinterpreted. technically, they have easily made it so XP can be installed After vista- the same way it works with older Linux and DOS installs- it copies that operating systems boot loader to a seperate file, and that file is referenced in boot.ini. windows XP purposely doesn't do this with Vista because it doesn't recognize the installed boot loader as being able to be booted in that fashion, so it airs on the side of caution and leaves it alone. It would make more sense that the bootloader is developed separately from the system than with it. It seems that there is no option for chainloading a system. It would be better to have a file that could only be accessed from the said machine and used a text editor such as vi to enable changes. Quote from: mr-bisquit on April 23, 2010, 08:21:03 AM It would make more sense that the bootloader is developed separately from the system than with it.They are developed together, but they can be seperated. one can easily use grub, lilo, or a previous Windows versions boot loader if they desire. I guess you mean "installed" separately. Quote It seems that there is no option for chainloading a system.Aside from either installing windows versions from oldest to newest either before or after any desired linux installations, or editing boot config files if not, no. there isn't. Quote It would be better to have a file that could only be accessed from the said machinelike boot.ini? Although I don't know if NT6's system has a analogous file... Quote and used a text editor such as vi to enable changes. vi being the editor of choice, since it's obviously a good config UI.Gentleman... Thanks for you advice. One more question: For $30 cheaper I could have got a Hurricane (I've never HEARD of this brand) 1TB external hard drive with only 1 yr warranty and a eSATA plug & bracket. From what I understand eSATA will transfer at up to 3GBps instead of 480MBps (USB speed). Solve : What are the best LCD monitor brands ?? |
|
Answer» I'm in the market for a new LCD monitor... anyway, you can check out Newgg.com and see customer reviews on various LCD monitors they have on stock and see what fits youGood suggestion. I've purchased two ASUS LCD monitors from newegg; first one on 5/29/2009 and second one on 11/29/2009. I've been pleased with them. Super Thanks for all the suggestions. I had a Gateway LCD monitor that we got in the middle of 2007. It lasted two years and failed. I think it was either the inverter or back light that failed. About 20 seconds AFTERS booting the screen would GO blank. It was the same way when plugging it into another computer. It didn't occur to me at the time that I could have replaced either part. It has been placed back into the life-stream of electronic equipment, recycled. I had big problems finding a good monitor. I purchased a cheapish 24 inch LCD Samsung and promptly sent it back as the picture was awful. I mean by that when viewing directly in front of and square to the screen, the top of the picture was much brighter than the bottom. The same effect occurred when viewing from a little way from either side, in fact I found it unviewable if there is such a word. I don’t know whether it was faulty or not. However the old adage, ‘you get what you pay for’ I found is really important here! I found the following site with all the information one could wish for about monitors. It boils down to what type of panel the manufacturer is using. The higher the quality of the flat panel, the higher the price and most importantly the better the picture of course! http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/specs.htm I wanted a monitor for general use plus some TV viewing via an internal TV card. After studying the site monitor information, 2 years ago I eventually purchased a 24 inch Dell 2408 Ultra Sharp model. This unit is superb in every way as far as I am concerned and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a really good picture etc.. Of course it was quite a bit more EXPENSIVE than the Samsung, for me though more than worth it! I hope this helps. thx micrex2 |

That's nice, but what does it have to do with the brands Jay mentioned? They are as dependable, if not more so, then those brands you listed.Nutman, what type of computer are you looking for? Netbook? Laptop? Where are you bringing it? To work? To school? Mostly kept at home? What will you be doing on it? Surfing the web? Work (i.e. on MS Word) Watching movies? Gaming? Media production?Hi. C D i am looking to get a laptop i can use anywhere, home, work or travel. will be using word, doing some work with photos, as well as tons of surfing for research. i will use office a lot as well. and sometimes i will just play. i guess i need something that can keep up to me, yet is not a monster to tote around. i was looking to the MSI P600 but cant seem to find a place to get one or a price. i am open to other systems, i just need some info on somthing that will not crast and die, because its made so cheap. this is why i ask here, i assume the collective mind here can point me to a good laptop. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 20, 2010, 04:37:36 PM I tend to agree. What do you mean dependable? Do you mean the Never fail? What if it fails and you are on a trip away from home? Who is going to fix it? The OP had specific needs, He was not asking about a general overall great value. Quote his laptop must be quick and dependable. ...As for ASUS, I am using one of their motherboards now, It just keeps on RUINING. But to learn more about their support, you should check out their site and the warranties policies. http://support.asesu.com Well, let's be specific. Here are just three laptops that are in the upper class. 1. My best recommendation for use as a teaching tool: Apple MacBook Pro Spring 2010 (Core i7 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 15-inch) 2. If price is no limit then Sony VAIO Z Series VPC-Z116GX/S 13-inch Vaio has a Core i5 CPU, discrete graphics, a 256GB SSD, high price 3. High performance, lower cost go with Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 bundle Intel's Wireless Display technology.. ALL of these makers provide full service centers across the world. Dependability should include the quality of WARRANTY service. How did it die? Quote What do you mean dependable? Do you mean the Never fail?of course not. If you had glanced at a dictionary you'd know that: Quote Dependable: reliable; worthy of reliance or trust; "a reliable source of information"; "a dependable worker"Quote dependability - The trustworthiness of a computing system which allows reliance to be justifiably placed on the service it delivers. It is also used as the collective term gathering the following attributes or non-functional requirements: availability, reliability, maintainability, safety, and security. Geek, you listed HP in the list of brands. apparently you missed that their previous laptop that failed in 2 years was also an HP. evidently their warranties aren't as great as you or they claim or they wouldn't be looking for a new laptop, and evidently not all of their laptops "never fail" or else it wouldn't have failed either. so by your protracted definition HP isn't dependable. Quote What if it fails and you are on a trip away from home?you say "fails" but you say nothing of the nature of the failure. Remember that no warranty will be honoured if the reason for the "failure" is evidently user indifference. additionally, just because had a bad experience with a certain brand doesn't necessarily mean everybody should avoid them. Quote The OP had specific needs, He was not asking about a general overall great value.Actually, they did. 1200$ budget, quick and reliable. Now exactly are you defining "reliable" in this context geek? How is toshiba, or HP (which I've already covered) or Lenovo any more dependable then ASUS, aside from the fact that you had a bad experience a single time. you're one person. compared to the millions of other people that are quite satisifed with both ASUS's products and their support. Additionally, you just say "it keeps on ruining" you never say "how". It doesn't matter how "dependable" a specific motherboard might be if the user keeps subjecting it to a power supply that doesn't provide the right voltages. And this is hardly ASUS's fault. Also, It's important to note that ASUS does make the laptops they sell. You could buy an "ASUS" laptop, and have the exact same laptop as somebody else who purchases a toshiba, aside from of course the large amount of brand labelling for each. Quote Toshiba had been the largest laptop manufacturer practically every year since the mid 1980sthat is until Quanta and Compal both outsold Toshiba in 2001. More recently, Toshiba sales have been gaining, and it took second place back from Compal and is gaining on Quanta. Quanta's ace in the hole is that it has become the primary contract manufacturer for Dell, which is Quanta's largest customer. Quanta also makes systems for HP, Compaq, eMachines, Best Buy, and Apple, among others. Dell also purchases laptops from Compal and Wistron (Acer), so it isn't tied to one supplier. Now you can see why Dell's different model lines look so differentthey were actually designed and manufactured by different companies. Contract manufacturing by companies such as Quanta and Compal is also the main reason why you see so many different brands of laptop systems that seem to look identical to one another. One potential drawback of the OEM/ODM game is that it is more difficult for companies to support the systems they sell, because in reality they didn't make them and may not have direct access to the parts and manufacturing. Therefore, in such cases no company is really properly equipped to support systems from the third party, and if you are going to complain about hardware reliability it might be best to blame and/or reward the appropriate company, not the one trying to take credit.our motherboard started freezine and then just failed. i feel less then 2 yrs for a laptop just sucks, and it was an HP,so i will not buy from them again. we have a toshiba we passed on to our daughter, its 4 and still working good. so yuo can see why i am asking for help choosing. i dont want another piece of junk laptop. OH we do baby our laptops and it was not user error or miss use. someone at a pc store said hp and toshiba are the same now. still waiting to hear any opinions on the msi p600. Solve : need help on voip? |
|
Answer» HI all, i need a help on configuring sip on my mobile (nokia e72) to make voip CALLS THRU my office wifi to cut down some cost. is it any way to do the same WITHOUT any cost. You need a client application interface. You need to put in [email protected] You need to enter your password and other information. On the other end: Be registered with the service. Have someone waiting to receive your call. Service connection will be a ppoe type. You also need to know if it is h323, sip, or another connection type. You may need to know the acceptable video codecs. There's a SMALL chance of the earphone and mic causing feedback which will effect performance. You will need to test this out on each client. |

Answer» were you one of the people below I use Eulaliser... do those THINGS work pretty good ? I downloaded one before but never used it Quote from: patio on April 18, 2010, 06:41:44 AM I use Eulaliser... W.T.H. is thatIt scans the EULAs (End User License Agreement) that nobody likes to read and ALERTS you to things that may be BAD. Or things that you probably don't want to agree to.. I've never actually used one before though, so I don't know how accurate they are..I just tried it with CANON camera software and it BROUGHT up 8 instances of "third party". FASCINATING Next thing you know, vendors will be writing their EULAs in a way that circumvents EULAlisers |

Solve : Making WPA work? |
|
Answer» Processor: Athlon 64X2 Dual Core 5600+
This is confusing. Are you saying you installed SP2 ?Yeah, I just set automatic updates on and it automatically loads a bunch of updates which includes svc pak 2If I were you, I would use the link and install the support patch for WPA2 in Windows XP. You'll then be able to use AES encryption which is better than tkip (WPA). You'll have to configure the router first, to use WPA2 and set a password. The password can be 63 characters long.. Just think of a long sentence that you'll remember.. don't use spaces.. http://compnetworking.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=compnetworking&cdn=compute&tm=58&f=10&su=p284.9.336.ip_p504.1.336.ip_&tt=7&bt=0&bts=0&st=23&zu=http%3A//support.microsoft.com/%3Fkbid%3D917021 Once you set up the router, locate your access point and type the WPA2 password.. If you're having connections problems still, then you've got a software problem... post in the Anti-virus forum here at CH for a viral cleanse.. Remember to do your part and sanitize Looks like I already have WPA2 because I have the AES option and I set it up on the browser page with the long password. Ill have to find a way to get the wireless computer online and get antivirus help. ThxI know you have WPA2 in the router, you need to either upgrade to Service Pack 3 or install the WPA2 Windows XP patch, if you want to have WPA2 supported in your operating system... You need support in both the router and OS for WPA2 to work.. Quote from: EEVIAC on April 14, 2010, 05:34:49 PM
I smite myself for this... You haven't tried connecting through a cable yet have you ? Let's determine if this thing will work with cable... Do you have one ?I am updated through svc pak 3 and have the aes option in network connections too but when i try to set it up it DOESNT work so im PRETTY sure I have a virus problem. Yes I do have cable internet and could move the computer where I could hardwire it in.Ok, I was just trying to say that if you can get it to work with a cable, then your network hardware for the most part, is ok.. Yes, this is either a virus or other software problem... If i do hardwire it in to get internet, is there a possibility of the virus migrating to my other computer that is also hardwired through the router? So you haven't tried a cable yet ? There is only a possibility of a virus here, it's not certain. Just make sure the other computer's software firewall is enabled and you've got nothing to worry about... Quote from: Amats on April 15, 2010, 09:10:42 AM If i do hardwire it in to get internet, is there a possibility of the virus migrating to my other computer that is also hardwired through the router? No, there isn't. most modems have a single LAN port. If you directly connect your PC to it, you will have to unplug the router. data has difficulty traveling between unconnected computers Also Viruses self-replicate on the PC they infect and spread via removable media, not usually via network propagation. (rightly speaking that would be worms that do that) Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 15, 2010, 08:36:17 PM No, there isn't. most modems have a single LAN port. If you directly connect your PC to it, you will have to unplug the router. data has difficulty traveling between unconnected computers my explanation was better Couldnt connect with cable either so I just wiped the hd again. Now I have updates loaded through svc pak 3. Is there a certain order in which I configure wireless for WPA2? Browser page is configured. Do I need to configure in network connections too? If so, do I use the same 63 character password I have on my browser settings?Found a wpa2 tutorial and got it going! Just wondering though, on the linksys browser settings instead of saying WPA2, it says WPA Preshared key and the same on my wireless page in network connections but both of them are set to AES encryption. And on the available wireless networks page beside the network name it says "Security enabled wireless network (WPA)". Does that mean it is or isn't WPA2? |
