Solve : "Download Complete" except where is it??? |
|
Answer» I wasn't really sure where to post this, so I decided here works-- It's completely grayed out, nothing happens if I click that or "open". Even immediately after downloading the file? Only possibilities I can think of at the moment would be either malware or a over-zealous Anti-virus.Yup, even immediately after. As far as I can tell, it downloads properly, then everything deletes instantly. I doubt its antivirus- I've had the computer for a while and I don't think I changed anything with that that would cause it to change its settings. Thanks for your help though. I'd like to know if you tried downloading a file when in safe mode, what would happen? You'd need to boot to safemode with networking to get your internet working in safe mode. Hmm. I have a lot of work to do tonight, but I'll try later perhaps. Although now I'm curious, so perhaps I'll go try now.It still didn't work. **sigh** Check the size of the Temporary Internet Files Folder (make sure it hasn't somehow been set too small - make it 200 mb for now) Delete all Temporary Internet Folder Files Delete the index.dat file (use ccleaner if needed) Reboot and try again with IE. You said you are trying to save it to a known location, correct? If you still can't find it, look in the Temporary Internet Files folder and see if it's there.I'm not sure what index.dat is? but I cleared me temporary internet files and set it up to 200 (it was on 50), and it didnt help. Yes, I'm saving to known locations, and no, they've never shown up in the temp files... sadly. The temp files function... I can open a word doc, etc, directly from an email attachment. Its just when I try to save a file to a location on my hard drive that it fails. I swear its like it successfully downloads then deletes itself. Something I've done in the past is to create a folder like "wolfsgurl temp" under C:\ and download all files to there. Since I've started using Firefox, downloads haven't been a problem.i wish it was something as simple as the browser i'm using. its everything... and its stumping everyone i know lolWhat version of Windows are you using? Quote Only possibilities I can think of at the moment would be either malware or a over-zealous Anti-virus.Maybe related to a deleted or incorrect ENVIRONMENTAL VARIABLE? Maybe not...it is possible though. Anyway, I read into another post with a similar experience that identified the problem between the Antivirus and UAC. http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/6555-downloaded-files-disappear-actually-never-appear.html Another post over at techrepublic had users with success by removing AVG and either reinstalling a new version or using another Antivirus. http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=223733&start=0&tag=content;leftCol Stemming from the same post over at techrepublic the solution was to remove AVG http://forums.techguy.org/all-other-software/707618-downloads-disappear.html |

Solve : Opinions on Linux? |
|
Answer» Hi guys, I'm curious to know what everybody's opinions on Linux are. 2. Did you like it? How is it compared to Windows?Yes, I like it. But, there is a learning curve to endure. And, I think it still needs to become more user-friendly if it's going to make significant inroads into Microsoft's territory. Tasks such as installing applications, hardware device drivers, and browser plug-ins such as Flash and Java are examples of what I'm talking about. And, many Windows users are not going to want to delve into using Terminal and typing command lines to accompish certain things. That, in my opinion, is a major deterent to Linux' likelihood of making significant inroads into Microsoft's territory. Quote 4. Would you consider moving to Linux full time? Not now; I still have Windows-based applications I want to use. Quote Also, do you think Linux market share will continue growing? In addition to comments above, I think Linux will have to be available with a longer time span of support for specific versions. They basically release a new version every 6 months. If you were an IT manager in a large organization, would you want to deploy a new version of an OS every 6 months? Even the LTS (Long Term Support) versions are only supported about 2 years on average, I believe. Compare this to the longevity of Windows XP. See what I mean? On the other hand, with Linux distros being available at no cost, that is a factor in favor of Linux. To summarize my Outlook, I'll predict it will continue to gain some market share but I think it may be a creeping upward, not a rapid upward trend. I have to agree with soybean. Although it is free, support doesn't last for as long as some would like, and it just doesn't compare with windows in a user-friendly sense. Most people would rather take 10 clicks to change their settings for something stupid in the control panel than take 5 clicks and about 10 lines of strange code and such with a linux distro.I like it a lot. I especially like Knoppix Live and use it to recover data on drives that are not bootable. On the other hand I generally don't know much about any of the distros. I'm still tied up in learning too many other things. Give it another year maybe and I'll give it a go. I just installed Ubuntu on one of my systems and I was all excited about it, but then after a big *sigh*, I decided to put it off for a while longer..I tried installing Ubuntu on my older PC but that failed catastrophically for some reason. I do have Slackware, Fedora, Ubuntu and XUbuntu installed in VMWare as well as Linux Mint on a flash drive. So far, Slackware has been my favourite, since it FORCED me to think; it starts off within the linux prompt, in text mode. I had to log in as root, CREATE another account, logout, log in as that account, and the start XFCE with StartX. Most of the tools/utilities/applications available are pretty much what you would expect in any linux distro, and a few "sudo apt-get install " finished up my set of applications. Quote from: soybean on April 04, 2010, 08:07:58 PM Yes, I like it. But, there is a learning curve to endure. Most people would rather take 10 clicks to change their settings for something stupid in the control panel than take 5 clicks and about 10 lines of strange code and such with a linux distro.I found Ubuntu to be very user-friendly from the first time I booted the Live cd. However tasks like configuring advanced system settings and installing some software can be difficult for a beginner. Like if you want the latest edition of Firefox and you go to the Mozilla website, the only thing you can get is source code. So to install it you have to add a repository, not the easiest task. Quote from: soybean on April 04, 2010, 08:07:58 PM Not now; I still have Windows-based applications I want to use.If those apps were available for Linux or you did not need them, do you think you would switch? Ubuntu LTS releases are supported for 3 year and 5 years with the server edition. That is not very good for organizations. However 6 month releases updates can be great for home users. There's still the thing with having to tinker with the terminal / Konsole / whatever you call that. Command prompt scripts, not very end user friendly, but if you'd like to write a script then that's good for you Quote from: 2x3i5x on April 05, 2010, 01:20:09 PM There's still the thing with having to tinker with the terminal / Konsole / whatever you call that. Quote from: Cityscape on April 05, 2010, 01:03:26 PM If those apps were available for Linux or you did not need them, do you think you would switch?I could see SWITCHING in that case. However, I'd still like to see some tasks made easier before making a switch. Having to go searching the Internet on how to do something via Terminal is just not my idea of using time productively. Quote I found Ubuntu to be very user-friendly from the first time I booted the Live cd.You make it sound so easy, but what did you do with it then? Here's what I say to someone who has never used, let's say, Ubuntu and who might be wondering what to expect. The installation can go very smoothly and Ubuntu will be ready to get online with Firefox, it has an email client (Evolution) already installed, has a media player, a music player, a PDF viewer, an Office suite (OpenOffice), a photo editor (GIMP), etc. In other words, it's ready to do many of the things Windows users can do with the software found on a new Windows system. In that sense, it's user friendly. But, as soon as that new user want to install Flash Player or download some software they'd like to use, or install a hardware device that requires obtaining and installing a driver, they are likely experience some frustration and bewilderment. They may also discover they simply can't find a driver for a printer or some other device. When I initially installed Ubuntu 9.04, the computer was using onboard video. I installed a spare AGP video CARD (NVIDIA FX 5200), thinking of this as a minor video upgrade. But, I found that I would have to use Terminal and use sudo commands to accomplish this. First road block was an error message saying I needed be at the root level in order to proceed. I search for how to do that and then obstacle #2 appears. More research and I find how to resolve that. Try the procedure again, getting by obstacle #1 (the root requirement) and obstacle #2 only to encounter obstacle #3. More research and a solution found. Start the procedure again, clearing obstacles #1, #2, and #3, but another obstacle appears. At that point, I gave up on installing the driver and using that video card. Oh, and I POSTED on a Ubuntu forum to ask for assistance but didn't get much help; they basically said the FX 5200 is a "legacy" card and is not supported. Hmm, I can easily still get Windows drivers for it. Also, Ubuntu 9.04 had no driver for my fairly new Brother printer, so I could not use it with Ubuntu. With Ubuntu 9.10, I can install my printer. So, these are some of the problems new Linux users can encounter. Quote from: soybean on April 05, 2010, 01:41:07 PM You make it sound so easy, but what did you do with it then?Read the book . I thought that is was really good book, it taught all the basics to more advanced topics and explained them in a way almost an computer user could understand. Quote from: 2x3i5x on April 05, 2010, 01:20:09 PM There's still the thing with having to tinker with the terminal / Konsole / whatever you call that. Command prompt scripts, not very end user friendlyQuote from: soybean on April 05, 2010, 01:41:07 PM But, as soon as that new user want to install Flash Player or download some software they'd like to use, or install a hardware device that requires obtaining and installing a driver, they are likely experience some frustration and bewilderment.Agreed. These are things that I would like to see "fixed" in Ubuntu. Using Terminal can be complicated to do things. Although sometimes it can be handy (like "sudo apt-get install Pidgin" to install). Like I mentioned earlier, some software like Firefox is difficult to install/upgrade. That is already getting easier because lots of sites are provide Debain/Ubuntu packages (.deb's) for their software. .Deb files are very much like .exe's on Windows, you just double click and they install. Flash Player has a .deb file at their site, so that makes it a snap to install. Quote from: soybean on April 05, 2010, 01:41:07 PM They may also discover they simply can't find a driver for a printer or some other device.I agree. Hardware support is a major issue (although the more people that use Linux the more hardware will be supported). I did manage to get my old Brother printer working but it was a bit difficult. My HP Officejet on the other hand was way easier than with Windows, all I did was plug it in and it worked. And driver installation can be a pain. If the following were fixed to make Ubuntu more user friendly, it could be a lot more successful. 1. Ease of software & driver installation 2. Customization of system without use of terminal 3. Hardware support Quote from: soybean on April 05, 2010, 01:41:07 PM they basically said the FX 5200 is a "legacy" card and is not supported. Hmm, I can easily still get Windows drivers for it.Were you using the drivers from Nvidia? The specs for that card state "Complete Linux Xfree86 drivers". That is probably why it did not work for you. Modern Ubuntu versions do not use Xfree86 (not sure if many distros do anymore), Ubuntu use X.org instead. I don't think Xfree86 and X.org are compatible. I have a PC with onboard from 2001 with only Xfree86 drivers, I can't get that card to work. The point he was trying to make wasthe driver installation process is not user friendly, and it doesn't support as wide a range of hardware as Windows, out of the box or otherwise.I had the feeling that linux was better suited for making servers. And also the fact that there's so many types of linuxes out there, how is one supposed to know which is really the one that's suited for them in the long run? Granted linux has significantly less viruses than windows does, but still .... why make things harder than it really needs to be? But that comes with the fact that Apple and Mac pay people to develop their OS's as a day job so that's another thing .... Quote from: soybean on April 05, 2010, 01:41:07 PM I could see switching in that case.So i really curious now, what would your reasons to switching to Linux be? |

Solve : username and password? |

Answer» I cannot get into my laptop because I do not remember my username and password. Is there something I can do to get into the computer to change it. Best Buy said they could do it, but only if it was purchased there, which it wasn't, so I am stuck WITHOUT my laptop. Can someone help me? thanksYou can CONTACT the manufacture. That have your personal DETAILS on file and they can help you after you give them your serial number and telephone number. How is it possible to forget both your username and password? Quote Memory loss, also referred to as amnesia, is an ABNORMAL degree of forgetfulness and/or inability to recall past events. Depending on the cause, memory loss may have either a sudden or gradual onset, and memory loss may be permanent or temporary. Memory loss may be limited to the inability to recall recent events, events from the distant past, or a combination of both. Although the normal aging process can result in difficulty in learning and retaining new material, normal aging itself is not a cause of significant memory loss unless there is accompanying disease that is responsible for the memory loss. |

Solve : Favorite Linux Distro? |
|
Answer» Pretty straight forward. My vote goes to Ubuntu. Rather than voting for my favorite... I've not used any of them for anything useful and really cannot think of a useful task I could perform with any of them.Really, not one useful task? What about web browsing, email, PDF viewing, OpenOffice apps (word processor, spreadsheet, database, slide presentation), media/video playing, music playing, photo editing, basic HTML editing, etc.? All these tasks can be done immediately with a new installation of Ubuntu, and probably most of the other Linux distros. Quote from: Cityscape on April 09, 2010, 10:50:27 AM It doesn't matter if you haven't tried a whole bunch. Then just vote for your favorite from what you have tried. So, if someone has only tried one, that would be their favorite, right? How meaningful is their vote in a poll? Quote from: soybean on April 09, 2010, 11:49:37 AM Really, not one useful task? What about web browsing, email, PDF viewing, OpenOffice apps (word processor, spreadsheet, database, slide presentation), media/video playing, music playing, photo editing, basic HTML editing, etc.? All these tasks can be done immediately with a new installation of Ubuntu, and probably most of the other Linux distros. I hardly consider any of those productive to what I do. I have office installed, but only for word documents. Actually I've had this copy of Office 2003 for ages and I can't recall a single time when it actually was worth the cost. This drives home another important point, which is more against windows then Linux (on account of cost associations) many people forget that Microsoft Word is not, strictly speaking, for personal use. It was designed for documents. I've seen people make silly little memos and notices and "lost pet" type stuff in word, and honestly that is completely and utterly ridiculous. Wordpad would suite the purposes of most people but they have been conditioned to believe that somehow they need Word for all word processing, and then they go on and on about how they will do their budgets in Excel and then you go to use it on their PC and find it's hasn't even been installed since they haven't used it. Is that cost effective? in my context, for my purposes, has to do with the creation of Win32 programs and ActiveX components that I use in those programs. I believe I'm in a *censored* of a better position to judge what is and is not "productive" and what my purposes are then anybody else. I realize that Linux, to the average person, has everything they need, but forgive my conceit but I'm the average person- that is why I specifically qualified my statement with multiple instances of the "I". If I had said anybody, or something along those lines, then your response would be perfectly justified, but as I said, I really don't see how a third party can dictate what is and is not productive or useful to me. Just because Linux has the applications installed by default doesn't necessarily make it any better. Slackware has a full DVD of crap on it but that doesn't really make the OS any better. Any Operating system can do stuff like basic HTML editing out of the box, am I to judge an operating system based on the quality of the built in applets? people say the windows utilities suck. Well, consider for a moment that, at least for the most part, they have to. If a product included with the operating System serves the same function as, say, (completely random, I swear (heh)) Netscape Navigator, let's say, Internet Explorer, they might incite claims of anti-competitiveness and abusing their position. So it's no wonder that notepad still sucks. there are commercial products (as well as free ones) that suit this purpose but if MS were to create something that was genuinely useful in the same way as those applications they would be attracting a lot of attention to themselves. They learned to stop providing people with useful applets long ago. yes, you can perform "useful" tasks with Ubuntu, or whatever, Linux distro, but unless the experience is then what I'm already doing I really see no reason to change the way I'm doing things now. and Based on the fact that they continually tout that there will be "no more DLL *censored*" in Linux without admitting that their Library management is about a million times worse then windows 3.1 is what I find atrocious. OK. side by side usage of Libraries leaves a lot to be desired. This is a fact It can be remedied, it can be fixed. But to actually try to use their weakness and say it's a strength over something in windows that actually work better is simply ridiculous and from my perspective really brings into question the experience of the people who would make the claim. At the same time, even though there are issues with something as down-level and important as management of include libraries there are about a kazillion different text editors one can choose for Any linux distro. And while I have no problem with variety, maybe the next time a linux dev decides, "I know, I'll make a text editor" maybe they'll take a look at the default repository and actually make something new. This brings up another interesting point- the package manager. It sucks. a common rebuttal to this point is that "windows doesn't have a package manager". Which is pretty silly. Really is it better to have something that is broken and only half works or not have it at all? is it OK to overwrite your library files and replace them with new versions even though it breaks compatibility with some other program? Not to mention every single distribution apparently decides that the kazillion other repository and package formats aren't good enough and have to define their own, which probably only differs from the others in that it's header has it's own name on it. For a free, open source OS there is a *censored* of a lot of name branding. Open source. this is another point. somehow this is inherently good. It isn't. if I open source an empty code file does it somehow make it useful? No. If i open source broken, useless code, does that somehow forgive the fact that it sucks? No. Of course, Linux is neither an empty code file nor is it broken or useless, but my point is that "Open Source" is not an incentive to the average user. What does "Open Source" mean to them? How does it help them? In either case they still need somebody else to change the code for them, wether it be a commercial program or an Open Source Project. "Open Source" is only meaningful to programmers. Additionally, many people say "It's open source, so you can change it" Which is purely evidence that they have never tried. It's an operating System. It's not a simple task to either change or compile. You'd need to have a pretty deep understanding of basic OS theory just to read and understand the code. Thankfully, while Ubuntu still has this tendency to footnote that it's Open Source, it's the first distro to actually put Linux on the map. before Ubuntu barely anybody knew what Linux was. many people thought it was a virus or something, or that only hackers used it. So, in that sense, it has certainly changed the face of Linux for the better. But it still needs reconstructive surgery and major organ transplants before it can properly compete with windows. Pushing the whole "Open Source" thing only goes so far, until people actually start to try to edit it and realize that it's no more user servicable then commercial Operating Systems. For the average user, it doesn't matter if the OS is Machine code (windows) or wether it's C, it's still code to them. So using that as a "selling point" to Aunt Martha is rather silly. The major advantage is that it's Free. It doesn't always reduce the Total Cost of ownership, but for a new or relatively new user, it comes pretty close. if somebody is already semi-familiar with windows it can actually make them think negatively about Linux- almost everything they learned about windows, folders, dragging, so forth, might need changing. and the fact that some of these things work and some don't only adds to the frustration. It's a paradigm shift, and a paradigm is best served as a single course, not with other Paradigms, otherwise you get cross-contamination, which just results in confusion. The very same thing happens when people SWITCH from Mac to windows, or windows to mac, or mac to linux, or linux to mac (heh, that's funny)- everything is different, and people tend to try to interpret what they see in one environment based on what they know of another. When it works, they feel they are learning. When it doesn't, they can often feel stupid. It's neither the Operating System's, nor the user's fault, but rather human nature. It's like having to deal all your life with doors swing outward to the right and being transported to a place where they swing out to the left. I could run and develop in VB6 via WINE, but I mean... c'mon, that's pretty dumb. And between the choice between gedit and my copy of EditpadPro, I think I'll go for the built in FTP support for developing my website, and Paint Shop Pro for images. I'm not about to restructure the way I do everything just because I'm intrigued by Linux. Sure, I can use the tools and applications provided by Ubuntu and most linux distributions, but A:) even if they the same features as what I'm used to, is there something with what I'm used to? Is using windows inherently wrong by default to a degree that I should revamp my usage patterns to fit a new OS? Sure, I can use GIMP for image editing, but I'd much rather spend 5 minutes in PSP, using tools and commands I am familar with then learn a new user interface. I mean, sure, Paint Shop Pro has a few UI faults but at least it wasn't designed by a bunch of different people all with different goals with the end result of a completely confusing UI that ends up being a testament to bad design. The problem with Linux is it has embraced the programmatic ideology that Options+Power=usability, when in fact the opposite is true. a Linux-Based desktop can only be useful to the general population when it let's go of such concepts and stops identifying as a "distribution" and instead identifies as an "operating System" otherwise it's just another shade of blue in a rainbow. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 09, 2010, 01:48:12 PM So using that as a "selling point" to Aunt Martha is rather silly. What about this for a "selling point": NO viruses or defragging ever again. Part of the reason I left Windows was viruses and sluggish performance. I had to reinstall Windows ever 6 months. I had all the anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware and all the other anti-somethings anyone could ever need but it did not help. I never went to any website i did not know was safe, I stuck to google, yahoo, hotmail, wikipedia and the rest of the basics. Still somehow I got all kind of viruses not to mention the spyware. And then I found out that Microsoft was helping the spammers by giving out my email! And then there was the defragging my HDD, *censored* help me if I have to do that again. Did several of those a week and performance still kept dropping. I shudder to think of how the computers run that are owned by people who listen to the computer technicians who recommend defrags once per month. Those 2 took soooo much time. I could have pasted commands in terminal thousands of times by then.i had a thought, why are many people just asking for windows softwares to be ported to windows? Solve : suggestion for design internet coffee(coffee net)? |

Answer» Hello
thanksCould you perhaps explain what an "internet coffee" is? I thought that "coffee" was a drink. probably means Cafe, since Cafe is the french word for coffee it's possible this was due to a language issue. and yes the word "cafe" is supposed to have an accent mark but I'm too lazy. alt + 130 on the keypad Quote from: Salmon Trout on April 11, 2010, 09:51:31 AM alt + 130 on the keypad I said even to type é. well I HOPE your happy. Solve : unRAID experience request? |
|
Answer» I'm planning on either purchasing a dedicated unRAID server from LimeTech or converting an existing tower to a dedicated unRAID machine. The dedicated server would be built by LimeTech for $700 since building it myself would end up costing either on par or far more. This would be one of the only rigs that wouldn't be featuring a POWER supply from PC Power & Cooling that I've owned. Anyway, the idea is at the moment is strictly for data storage. I would like to have a location where all security cameras, crashplan, backups, and media storage can be centrally located under the umbrella of security and data recoverability in the event of single drive failure. |

Solve : Just to say "Hi everybody", long time - no post.? |

Answer» I usually have a problem that I need help with when I log on here, but lately my pc's have been running smooth - also my job takes up ~ 14hrs a day so I don't have time to visit here like I use to. I just wanted to say "Hi" to all you that have helped me so MUCH in the past. But someday soon I plan to build another system so don't anyone go to sleep - I'll likely need PLENTY of help... as usual LOL... An ASUS board would be a good 2nd choice...I almost bought an ASUS board for the last build. Maybe a Rampage II Extreme for this build? Quote I've not had any issues with any Gigabyte boards i've installed...probably 20 or so.The Gigabyte board was great after I finally got the CPU in it. The perimeter of the socket was defective and if I remember right I had to trim it with a razor blade and then still almost broke the board getting the CPU fully seated. |

Solve : I don't know if this is a virus or not...? |

Answer» Some web sites, like this one for example, seem to work normally. Others, like Yahoo.com (email) refuse to load at all. Actually this sounds more like a connection issue to me... I thought that.. but he does say other sites are working fine.. It's AT&T DSL. Speedtest.net say 2.58 Mb/s download & .43 Mb/s upload. I don't KNOW if I've ever reset the router. Just power off and back on again? Can you give more examples of other sites that don't work for you?Well... I reset the router and that appears to have cleared up the connection issue! Guess I'll do that more often from now on. I reboot the PC pretty often but haven't been in the habit of switching off the router - guess I'll add that to the list. Thanks to all! There is one thing that popped up when I rebooted the PC this time, an error message "NPSWF32_FlashUtil.EXE - Entry Point Not Found The procedure entry point GetSystemWow64DirectoryA could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll" Is that anything to be concerned with? thanks again! |

Solve : Emergency File Retrieval!? |
|
Answer» I do some of my academic work with students via e-mail. One of my students just sent me a WORD file. I spent over an hour correcting and analyzing it CAREFULLY. Throughout the process I had saved it a handful of times. I was getting ready to attach the file and send it back when I realized that I can't locate the file anywhere. Can someone please suggest a way that I could quickly retrieve the lost file? Of course the original uncorrected version is still attached to my student's original e-mail in my inbox. However, that one does me no good! I am using Windows XP and Office Word 2003. Thanks! Not to worry! Windows comes with a REALLY handy search feature! What you can do is this: I really appreciate the assistance. Unfortunately, I must have somehow managed to save it in it's original form because I can't find it at all. Of course I was able to find a slew of others I had been working on recently. When you open a document from an email ATTACHMENT (without saving, just directly opening), it will open in Read-Only mode, meaning it will prompt you to create a new name/place to save the file. Try doing a search of "My Computer" or do a search of "Desktop" (if you save stuff on there), to get a broader search. i must have screwed up and saved it as the original somehow. I went to check the temp files in Word also with no luck. In word, check the MRU list. This is the list of recent files that often appears at the bottom of the file menu. |

Solve : Overheating System? |
|
Answer» My system reboots unexpectedly, and I believe this is due to overheating. I only have this problem in the spring and summer time when the area I keep my computer is anywhere between 70F and 100F+. I have a full tower with lots of open space on the inside as well as 5 fans (Haven't looked into if they have the best air flow setup or not). My problem is that the computer's cooling system is air and where my computer is located the air isn't anywhere close to cool. My question is if I should go ahead and upgrade my cooling system (Either air or liquid cooling) or if I could go out and buy a PORTABLE air conditioner and stick that sucker next to my computer and be done with it. Keeping budget in mind I've looked around and I think I can get a descent air conditioner for around 150$. Also I personally would just like to but an air conditioner and stick that sucker by my computer and be done with it, but if it could cause negative effects on my system I'd like to know. I'd be okay with INSTALLING a few more fans and looking up how to get the best air flow, but I'm not sure I could install a liquid cooling system my myself. That's all if you need any more information just ASK and I'll provide it. Thanks to anyone who can provide useful information. Sorry if I don't make since, what can you expect when I type this at 4 in the morning. A small desk fan placed by the front is usually sufficient... Not a PSU manufacturer...re-branded. Huh? Solve : Fax Software VS Internet fax? |
|
Answer» With the development of the technology, we have said goodbye to the days of using fax machines. However, with fax software and Internet fax, which one should we choose? What do you think of Internet fax and fax software Nothing much. Want to see my Hamster? Sure SOUNDS like an advertisement to me.Allow me to share my frustration with my fax MACHINE with you. I wanted to GIVE my girlfriend some chocolates, so I placed the box on the scanning tray, smashed the lid down, and sent it. But all she got was a PICTURE... a god *censored* facsimile of the bloody chocolates! FALSE ADVERTISING! It says right on the box, "Send anything, Anywhere" And I'l pretty sure Chocolates are a thing, and my GF's house is a where. And then I tried To do the same with JoyFax Server. Let me tell you, I got no Joy from that product. First off, I had to control everything with a Atari Joystick that I had to hunt for on ebay, because it didn't come included, and they for some reason didn't have mouse or keyboard support. In order to type anything in, I needed to get a number of points in a game of Pong EQUAL to the ASCII value of each letter. Let me tell you, I was bloodshot and pissed once I finally got the "dear" part out, and immediately took the product back. "This bloody thng made me play Pong for 12 and a half hours just to type 'dear'" "Sorry sir no returns" "Well, alright then. I don't want it. I'm going to go browse through the other JoyFax boxes for no reason" I then shoved the box with the others and ran the *censored* out of there. They said they would fax me some sort of litigation, but it hasn't come yet. they're PROBABLY still playing pong in order to create it. Another product I found confusing was HamsterBrowser, which actually had nothing to do with hamsters, and was instead a browser based around a little known japanese cartoon that depicted anthropomorphic hams playing dance dance revolution. Needless to say, the HTML support stunk, and it couldn't show images, any image anywhere was simply a high resolution photo of a cooked ham of some type. In order to type, I have to use something similar to "mouse gestures" where I have to take a live mouse and rub it's underside on a special pad. the pad detects the mouse movement and moves the cursor appropriately, but I mean, seriously, *censored* kind of an interface is this? Not to mention my mouse arrived dead, so I had to wait three weeks for them to ship me a new one. the dead one worked, but it started to smell and flies were gathering around. I ended up trying to fax it to the garbage. |

Solve : Master drive illegal in LA.? |
|
Answer» Master drive illegal in LA. If you work for the city or county of Los Angeles you are not allowed to refer to a hard drive as a master or a slave. This decision was made back in 2003, but this is the first time I came ACROSS it. Did you not realize that we are politically wrong when referring to my hard drives as master and slave? The document has this title, "Identification of a equipment sold to LA County". This is a copyrighted article I'm reading, so I'm not allowed to quote verbatim. What it says, in effect, Los Angeles County will promote a work situation that does not have any discrimination at all. And this will even apply to the vendors and contractors who sell electronic equipment to the county. They are not allowed to refer to a computer hard drive as a master or slave device. If you would like to read the entire article, I have placed a LINK below: http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/outrage/master.asp My question. Is this still enforced in LA? Have we offended anybody in LA? Is this forum off-limits for LA county workers? I can understand that but it is still pretty funny. ^.^ It's just like saying you can't call a human a human, you must refer to them as mammals. ^.^That's just plain stupid. I notice they didn't offer any alternative terms.Honestly I think changing the names would just add to the confusion since this has been around since the beginning of computers with multiple drives. It would also help if they suggested a new standard in place of Master/Slave -- best I could come up with would be Primary/Secondary.It would be interesting to contact some one in the LA County IT department and find out how they really refer to hard drives tied together. What the ****! What are we going to do? Hurt the hard drives feelings? And SERIOUSLY? I don't see how a black/negro could possibly be offended when a hard drive is referred to using these terms. what's next? We can no longer use the colour "black", or the word "colour"... I mean, for christ's sake... they're just words. It's the context that would make them OFFENSIVE. and generally if somebody puts them in a offensive context they almost certainly are doing so on purpose. It would be like outlawing the word "face" because it is so veritable as an offensive vehicle when prefixed with undesirable words. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 29, 2010, 09:40:53 PM What are we going to do? Hurt the hard drives feelings? So that's the real reason hard drives crash.Obviously a law CREATED by whitey. Fight the power. EDIT: For the record, the use of these terms is not illegal in any way. It is merely frowned upon by the county. |

Solve : Computer viruses and spyware change? |

Answer» It was brought up in the TO-DO section that the "Computer viruses and spyware" section be renamed now that there is a "Virus and spyware removal" child board. Would like some additional feedback on what the community would like this changed to or any other ideas or other comments. How about just Computer Security? For me that says prevention rather than solution. People are generally infected by the time they ask on the board. Just my thoughts.Child-forums are VISIBLE from the main page. The Off-Topic section is ACCESSIBLE without GOING to the Other section first, just like the Virus Removal section is accessible without having to go to the PARENT forum. |

Solve : Two towers hooked to one monitor? |

Answer» I have an internet linux computer and a windows xp TOWER. I have them both hooked up to the same monitor. No switches or anything it's straight into the monitor. My question is; is my non-internet computer STILL secure? Or, is there a way for somebody to hack into it?How are they both hooked up to one monitor ? ? Quote from: patio on March 29, 2010, 04:29:48 PM How are they both hooked up to one monitor ? ? VGA and HDMI?Hmm, so what determines which computer's output is displayed on the monitor? Quote from: inuyasha555 on March 29, 2010, 04:51:46 PM VGA and HDMI? I don't know if that's how the OP is doing it, but that's a good idea. Do the switching with the monitor inputs. I've used the external switches before, and they are kind of a nuisance. Better than two monitors, but still kind of a nuisance.Does the monitor have a switch for changing from one input to the other? If not, then how is the switching accomplished? On my main TV, which I just use as a TV, It's got a VGA input, two HDMI inputs, an AV input, a S-video input and a RF input and you switch between them with the remote. That way I can have a DVD player, a PlayStation and a VCR (long story) all hooked up at the same time and easily switch between them. It's a monitor with two vga hookups. There are buttons on the front of the monitor that can change from display 1 and display 2. Plain and simple. Kind of convenient REALLY. I'm wondering of the non-internet can be ACCESSED by the net through the monitor or if it's still secure. Thank you. I've even read(haven't seen it) where YouTube has a provision to download (certain videos)right from their site? I ALSO have read that the law varies with the country. Legal to download (but not to provide access to uploads) in Canada?. Neither is legal in the US ?. Solve : Recovering my Data? |
|
Answer» Hello I have a few problems one problem is more specific than the other but related to recovering data So what you cant help me out here? my data is gone for good I havent even reformatted 7 times which is the usual time the data whipes itself out.Huh?For some reason this reminds me of a person I know who had a older Mac (system 7). I was using it for one reason or another, and emptied the trash because it was nearly 50% of the drive. THe guy comes back, and asks me "what did you do" and I said... "well, not much... I emptied the trash." "NOOO!" "What? what's wrong?" "that's where I keep my documents!" Apparently, this person thought that storing things in the trash can would cause that space to be magically freed. basically, you could put an infinite number of files into it of any size. An analogous situation also occured with SOMEBODY using DOS 6 and Delete Sentry, which copied deleted files to a hidden folder. I foolishly purged the data for one reason or another (I think I did something that purged automatically). And of course this other guy also stored his important data in the hidden folder. Another case was even worse, and far more similar to the case we have here in this thread. The person would literally delete the files, and then use a recovery program to recovery them when needed. Apparently this followed the same logic above- that is, the deleted files didn't use up space, so it was better this way. Remembering the first letter of the filename was a small price to pay. Anyway, when he installed windows 95, for some reason all of the files were no longer recoverable, them being overwritten was a likely cause. Quote from: dante10k on March 02, 2010, 04:04:01 PM So what you cant help me out here? my data is gone for good I havent even reformatted 7 times which is the usual time the data whipes itself out. Oh, I'm sure the data is recoverable. If you have a spare 1500$ for a forensics team. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 02, 2010, 06:39:54 PM Oh, I'm sure the data is recoverable. Sometimes the downloadable HDD recovery programs can get certain recognizable file types back. The free ones usually have restrictions that limit the ability to recover catastrophic losses like this. They do invite you to pay for the full version if your case needs it. Quote from: jkolak on March 03, 2010, 01:24:48 AM Sometimes the downloadable HDD recovery programs can get certain recognizable file types back. The free ones usually have restrictions that limit the ability to recover catastrophic losses like this. They do invite you to pay for the full version if your case needs it. After three formats and a change of file system, there is no PUBLICLY "tool" that you can use that can recover the data. the only type of tool that can be used would be one that is specially designed to read data slightly off track, in the hopes of finding the remnants of older data. Guess who has these types of apps? Expert Data Recovery. Recuva and similar publicly available tools- including "commercial" data recovery software doesn't come CLOSE to the meticulousness of the in-house (read: not publicly available, free or otherwise) applications and tools used by them. Now, Recuva would work fine if you only reformatted once- and then tried to recover right away, but formatting three times, and then expecting to recover data after 3 months of use is nothing short of completely ludicrous. |

They want to know more about you ect, then they it you with the money part. That's what I figured, CR...thanks!Ya last time I tried to bait a scammer there was around 3 emails back and forth before they wanted my bank infoYou should reply and see how long it takes before they want your bank info.see how low they'll go. Say stuff like "excellent, this will help pay for a new wheelchair as well as help me buy the medication and medical caretakers I need for my advanced Multiple Sclerosis, as well as the funerals for my WIFE and children who were catastrophically killed last week by a burglar, I could do nothing due to my illness but watch as my family was brutally slain. Thank goodness there are still good people out there that are willing to run lotteries and restore the faith of those who FEEL as if they have been forsaken in so many ways. As my Uncle Mortimer said immediately before his death, "this world has winners, and this world has losers... but sometimes, the winners are the losers and the losers really win with what's important. I'll be right back, I have to feed the tigers." Quote 1.Name in full. Solve : Legal/Illegal downloads. Who knows?? |
|
Answer» A post to the sites concerned, ie my ISP, or what. I dunno! Thought l'd try here first as someone always gives me a sensible answer. So how does anyone differentiate between what l am downloading, eg an illegal "blockbuster" or a valid download? Not sure how they would... but they would have to if they (whomever they are) were to litigate. Thanks everyone, but l probably put more emphasis on the illegal download than the legal one (sorry) l meant it the other way around but...... How do these downloaders get caught then? I'm now (hypothetically) downloading a movie from my friends kids' birthday party. Who knows whether it's legal or not (of course it's legal) but who knows? Just trying to ascertain, out of interest, how someone knows the difference, if that makes sense A kids party wouldn't be illegal. Downloaders don't get caught unless they download a tracer program. A tracer could also be a trojan, it pretends to be a cracked program, etc. and send information to the legal owner. It could even be made by the company that makes the real one. This is just an idea, I'm not 100% sure about it. Thanks for that Helpmeh. Well blow me down, a friends kids party illegal? I sort of see where you're coming from there, so probably not a good example to have picked. It makes you wonder though. If l walk around for ages taking a video of the house and garden here in France and then burn it to disk, then l should basically send that disk to ENGLAND and NOT upload it to a site whereby numerous friends can download it from online. Is that then copyrighted? Gets soooooooo confusing. Thanks for bearing with me on this. Regards No. It would not be copyrighted. Copyrighting something is a LENGTHY process. But here is what you need to know. Don't download movies that are or were in theatres or on DVD/VHS. You CAN download home movies legally. Quote from: willythecat on September 08, 2009, 05:51:49 PM Well blow me down, a friends kids party illegal? He said it wasn't illegal.Whoops, sorry BC, brain and typing fingers not in sync! Question answered. What a great site this is. Throw in whatever question you may have, however stupid you may think it to be, and it will always get answered. Thanks again HM and BC Kind Regards Quote from: willythecat on September 09, 2009, 12:20:39 AM Whoops, sorry BC, brain and typing fingers not in sync! There are no legitimate questions that are stupid. If you learn, then it is a good thing. Maybe you can stick around and help other MEMBERS out too!Just to add another note. I find the easiest way to differentiate between the two is ask yourself one question before you download. Did the Author/Creator intend for this video to be shared between people for free. So Warner bros did not intend that hence illegal. You do intend that so it's not illegal. This question get asked over and over. Do a Google on the most exact or clear or right phrase and see what you get. I tried the exact phrase "Is it legal to download a movie." with the word 'copyright" in the article and got over 900 links. No way can I read 900 articles on this. Here is just one worth showing here: Quote Is it legal to download a movie free of charge? From: http://www.moviefree.com.au/ Quote So how does anyone differentiate between what l am downloading, eg an illegal "blockbuster" or a valid download? Some copyrighted material is uploaded there on purpose by authorities and those will include hidden, so called, "tracker". The tracker will tell them exactly, to which computer that particular illegal download went. Also remember that downloading Torrents is not illegal but the files attached to the torrent can be e.g blockbuster movies etc Also depends on where you live, Europe is far more relaxed when it comes to file sharing than say over America. |

Solve : cannot max screen for video viewing? |
|
Answer» When I attempt to maximize the screen to VIEW a video on hulu or youtube I get a half gray/black screen. You can hear the movie and click on the screen to stop/start it but it does not display it. It will HOWEVER play netflixs movies at full screen which uses silverlight instead of flash. This happens on all browsers I have tried. I have updated my video card driver and run general updates. I have also not changed resolutions. |

Solve : No Sound Still? |
|
Answer» Wasnt sure where too put this cause it orginally worked. I went too there site an got the driver for it an I think that we probably have a copy but it still wont play ANYTHING. speakers work an I tried ear phones cant figure out why? Its been like that for a good while, dell dimension 4100.any ideas at all? Any at all its been well over a month. If nothing else I suppose to contact them which I forget that I can possibly do Quote from: squall_01 on September 09, 2009, 01:44:18 PM Any at all its been well over a month. If nothing else I suppose to contact them which I forget that I can possibly do It has not been a month since this topic was opened. Put down the pipe and step away from it.try double-clicking.what? The post isnt that old but thats how long I have been faceing the issue here at best Quote from: squall_01 on August 31, 2009, 01:30:17 PM I went too there site an got the driver for it an I think that we probably have a copy but it still wont play anything. Ok exactly what site did you go to and what drivers did you get? By now you should know what KIND of info is needed. Before you reply saying that all the info is in another thread let me go ahead and stop you by saying no one here (with the exception of maybe Smezekitty) is going to go back thru your older post to help you with this one so either keep it all in the same post or add the relevant information to this one.I dont think I even have one. Its a dell dimension 4100, 2k + sp 4/ Dells siteTravel to Dell's site and enter the Service Tag # from the back of the machine... All your drivers will then be listed... which is what I have done Quote from: squall_01 on September 10, 2009, 10:21:33 AM which is what I have done And ? ? Dell's are finicky about Drivers...you should be using ONLY Dell drivers if in fact that machine is a Dell... Or is it a machine you used to install XP with a Dell OEM CD ? ? That would explain the predicament...no it has 2k, I am thats the thing Quote from: patio on September 10, 2009, 10:28:52 AM And ? ?I have to disagree with that Patio. I have a dozen Dell computers currently between home & work (and have been using Dell Systems for more than 15 years) and I always update the drivers from the OEM web sites. The only things I download from Dell are bios updates. However, in this case I do agree that's where he should start. Solve : Speaker Problem...? |
|
Answer» Hello, first post, new to the site, Just looking for a bit of help. I am a college student WHOSE 5.1 surround sound just went up. Well the course was sliced in half, my couch leg ( MADE of metal) when moved slide over it and sliced it in half. At first I got it back working with electrical tape, but as of recent that hasn't helped. i was told to solder it. So I just got a soldering iron, and it still doesn't work. It just seems that the thing isn't getting power. it is a logitech, I am sure they aren't that expensive any more... but when I got it it was fairly pricey, and if it still works why spend more money, I don't know i still have HOPES...but i am not sure if I am doing anything wrong? Any one who could help me I would highly appreciate. Well the course was sliced in half Which cord was sliced in half? Quote from: AEGIS on September 10, 2009, 10:13:19 PM Which cord was sliced in half? Oops spelled cord wrong. The main power cord that would go into an outlet. I tried splicing it back together and soldering it still not working. Could it be possible I blew something? WI shouldn't think a solder / splice of the power cord would be a problem. I wonder if there is a fuse or coil which was blown. Not much help, but it is not inconceivable that the unit was damaged. See what others may suggest in POSTS. |
