Solve : Second HD with no Drive letter?

Answer»

Hi I am running Windows XP Pro the PC has two HD one listed as 'C" the other should be "F".  When I boot up it lists both, it also shows both HD in Hardware Manager and indicates that both are working correct, however the second drive doesn't show up in my computer.   So I can not use it.  I have tried CHANGING it to a MASTER and also a slave, either one of those shows it on start-up but not in My Computer.

Any Ideas?
Thanks in advance Right click "My Computer"; click MANAGE.  Click Disk Management under Storage.  Is the second hard drive shown there?Yes it does and indicates that it is working, however, it doesn't show when I just click on My Computor or in the Explore tree. How is it being reported in Disk Management ? ?
Drive letter ? ?
Healthy/unhealthy/RAW ? ?

Right clik the drive and select properties....report back.Did you format an partition the drive?  Did you try a repair useing the xp disk?It shows Working Properly, it show the drive when it's booting up but it does not show in my computer so I cannot right click on it in my computer because it says it's not their.  I have not formatted the drive infact I have tried two other drives and the same thing happens with them all.

So I feel it must be in Windows, don't you AGREE?

no, its not going to see it if you dont.the drive is not partitioned. Run Disk management (Start->Run, "Diskmgmt.msc")

you should see the drive in there, as "unallocated". create a new partition on it and format it. it should then appear in explorer.

Solve : Stupid Effin File Won't goooo awayyyyy?

Answer»

I have an MP3 file that I cannot get rid of ... tried deleting the whole file, everything ELSE in the file went but this ONE EFFIN FILE and it just hangs. When I right click on the EFFIN file, no "properties" option shows...nor does cut, copy, rename, delete etc etc. I have tried dragging to recycle bin and it won't budge. I have tried unlocker...tried booting in safe mode..nada.

How can I get rid of this EFFIN file, pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeee helppppppp meeeeeeeee before I go batty !!!

Thank you and have a great day. What size is the file?
What OS is this?Sorry ..was so pissed, I forgot the details.

Windows XP SP2

It's 4.91 MB ... MP3 audio file .... scanned it with malware bytes ... not a virus, but has a very long file name.

It won't open, play, delete, drag, MOVE or anything. It just sits there annoying me.I should also say that there were 5 other files in THIS file which all deleted successfuly.

But not this one effin bugger.

Are you finished saying "effin"? I'm not insulted, but it does insult some people.

Can you give us the name of the file?

Go here: http://virscan.org/ and upload the file. It'll scan it will multiple virus scanners and give you the results. Post the link to the results.Sorry.

Can you post the name of the file in question?Ok ..done with hijack this. Files fixed.

The file in question (I'd copy and paste but it won't let me) and it's quite long, so here goes:

07-the_blind_boys_of_alabama-down_by_the_riverside_(with_the_preservation_hall_jazz_band_an d_allen_toussaint)

And like I said it's 4.91 MB. No matter what I do, I get "invalid file name" errors.

I have a screen shot of what I see when I right click if you need that?

Are you finished saying "effin"? I'm not insulted, but it does insult some people.

I myself found it quite amusing reading his initial postI apologize to all who didn't. I just wasn't THINKING. Wasn't meant to be amusing...was just expressing my frustration as best I could with written words since ya'll couldn't hear me ranting and stomping around.

YES, please.

Can you rename the file? Never mind, just saw that you can't.Ok, but just a wee problem...how do I insert the screen shot in a reply here?

(Banging head on desk cuz I hate looking so unedukated)Don't worry about it.

Solve : Please help creating an online account?

Answer»

Dear Friend,

I am having a PROBLEM where I am unable to create a new account at www.plentyoffish.com . I just cannot understand why it keeps refusing.

Could you please create an account for me there using the following info.
[Removed]

This would be a huge help.

Thank You
VivekNO, NO, NO!

Vivek, you gave all this "personal" information -- bad with which to start!
Then I find out it's for a dating service!!  Even worse!!
(This is not a commentary on the site being a dating service.  This is a commetary on the fact that, knowing that information, people could really mess with your account and PROFILE, and cause you serious harm -- the very least of which is that you end up meeting people who are the exact opposite of your interests.

Now, what sort of error do you get?  Why won't the site let you start the account?Dear Aegis,

Thank you very much for checking out my problem.

The problem is that for whatever email id I use it keeps telling me that that email id has already been used and asks me to go to a page where it will mail me the password if I had forgotten it. But when I try to do that it says that my email id doesn't exist in its database(and it also has another page which is a 404).

I had given the info for creating the account openly as I would be changing the password after someone had created the account for me.

And is a dating service bad?? Its almost like telling pornography is bad while 99.99% of men look at it atleast once a year. Its a natural instinct. And dating is significantly more innocent than PORN, right?

If you could help me I would be glad to send you the info in a private message.

Thank You very much again. :-)............................

Vivek.vivektemp, if you send me your info on PM and exactly what you want in your account details, I'll try registering for you and don't worry I won't jack up your account or anything, just TRYING to help you get on with your life Quote

This is not a commentary on the site being a dating service.

Again, I was not passing judgement on the site.  I wish you the best.  See if 2x can help you out.

Solve : Squashed images!?

Answer»

When I had to purchase a replacement for my 17" inch monitor screen I found that there were few to choose from as it seems they are being PHASED out. I've been perfectly happy with the one I had but the shop salesmen couldn't comprehend why I wouldn't want to update to a 19"  -  better resolution, clearer picture cost very little more ETC. What deterred me was that the one on display in the shop had very distorted images; everyone had squashed heads and sideways stretched bodies.
I was assured that this was because the set had not been adjusted.
"Oh if if it's easily corrected I'll take a 19" one then" I said. It was just a case of altering the screen resolution, they said! I tried it but found that all
the screen resolution does is make the whole image either bigger or smaller, not
correct the proportions. How can I do this? When I rang the shop they seem to think that most people just accept the distortion for the sake of a better picture.
I can't live with it.
I'm spending a lot of time putting a family history together through old photographs at present and it is no longer a pleasure when so many of our forebears appear as squat dwarves.
Please does anyone know how to rectify this before I lock horns with the dealer for a refund.

                                                                         Gertha
May we know what brand and model this is? We have a Samsung 19inch widescreen here at our office and all we did was to change the resolution, I think its at 1440x900, if Im not mistaken.Jerryheavyarms

It is a GNR 19" LCD.
Thank you so much for your quick reply which has helped me to get it as good as I think I can.
I hope I can explain this coherently.
At first I was going into Display, upping the resolution slider and clicking OK.  After upping the slider the boxes and text became so small that I didn't notice there were three stages to this operation. First up the slider, (at this stage Apply is greyed out), then you have about 15 seconds to verify. If you say yes the Apply comes BACK. After clicking this you then click OK to finalise it.
Having got this right, I set it to 1440x900 as you suggested. This stopped the squashed LOOK but made everything that was standard very small. I could adjust text size for what I was working on but permanents like desktop icons and tool bars remained so tiny that the text was almost unreadable. I RESET to one slider position down 1360x768 which improved the general sizing (though it is still really too small) without compromising the photographs too much. One resolution size below that brings back the squashed head look. I suppose I must settle for this or get used to changing the screen resolution around according to what I'm doing.

                                                         Thanks again,  Gertha

Good Day,

My name is Micheal Brown, and I'm British (born and living in UK.) I'm a
freelance researcher. I am to head a environmental research in Asia, which
is commencing soon. I do a lot of traveling to cover various part of my
research.

However most of my projects is being funded by American/Canadian
counterparts who send me payments via US/Canada based bank Money Orders and
checks. Which I have problem cashing, because it takes up to 4-6 weeks to
clear over here. GETTING an accountant in the states or opening an account
would have been my best choice but I have deadline to meet and taking any of
those choices would cost me time and a WHOLE lot of other requirements,
which I will not be able to cope with.

I found your email via an ONLINE surveyed listing, and I am emailing you to
offer you a part time job of helping me cash checks/Money Orders in the
States/Canada. Which you will be getting a 10% payment from any amount of
check you receive as your commission for cashing the checks.

Have it in mind that you are not putting any money upfront and your banking
information are not required. If You're interested, you are to provide me
with the below information to get started to ([email protected])

Interesting.  I'll have to remember that.  I've not had such a mail in a while -- come to think of it, ever since my Monster account went inactive.

Maybe they still come in, but they land in the spam can.And watched it burn.  I have it setup with the spam filter but it didnt get it.  Will now hopefully.

This is India .

This is where you call when you have a TECHNICAL problem with your computer, internet or credit card.Make fun of a country which has a FASTER growing economy than the United States.  Make fun of a country which has an imperfect government, but a government which MADE technology education a priority.

Laugh it up -- but on whom does the joke squarely rest?It sort of looks like what's going on behind my computer! A lot of stuff goes through India. Little children there disassemble computers that are too old or broken to use by the GVT of Canada and get mercury poisoning.Agreed -- a lot goes on there.

But still with less or no government and state regulations that is what every city would resemble. Unsafe maybe but they get things DONE without all of the bureaucracy. A few dollars under the table maybe...

American IT isn't always better. Note the drop light hanging in the middle.

This is disturbing. How E-waste Works

This is worse. Shipbreaking. We send our dead war ships to foreign countries to be dismantled for scrap. No regulations and they/we are poisoning the oceans. But hey it's better than paying union wages, health care, benefits and so on to the very tax payers who paid for them to be built. Right?

Then there is always How to Make an Entire Sea Disappear.

Sorry, didn't mean to get all environmental about this. I'm far from an activist. I kind of am fascinated by it all actually.

An educated guess is that they will be forced to support it beyond the date they've claimed they'll DROP support.  These dates have a habit of being pushed back by consumer PRESSURE.I've never really bothered with MS's Silly little schedules.

I'd second you on that, however, it's possible the date could stick with Vista and the potential success of Windows 7. Would boil down to how many users would still be using it in 2014.Yes, may Vista disappear into Silicon *censored* as soon as ever possible.

The Portugeuse has long been a target for the Spanish giants, whose president Florentino Perez vowed earlier this week to do "everything possible" to take the 24-year-old to the Bernabeu.

A statement on United's offical website, under the headline 'Reds accept £80m Ronaldo bid', read: "Manchester United have received a world-record, unconditional offer of £80 million for Cristiano Ronaldo from Real Madrid."

The statement continued: "At Cristiano's request - who has again expressed his desire to leave - and after discussion with the player's representatives, United have agreed to give Real Madrid permission to talk to the player.

United accept world record Ronaldo bid
The Portuguese star is on the verge of a move to the Bernabeu after Manchester United accepted a world record £80m bid for him on Thursday.

He will discuss a contract with the Spanish giants when he returns from holiday in Los Angeles, and will land the biggest contract in football history.

Real are expected to offer a structured deal starting at £183,000-a-week, but with a 25 per cent rise every season seeing his pay SOAR above half a million pounds every week in the final year of his contract.

Based on current exchange rates, Ronaldo's will be the fifth-largest contract in sports history behind four baseball deals.

The biggest belongs to Alex Rodriguez, who signed a 10-year, $275m (£167m) deal with the New York Yankees in 2008, equating to an average annual salary of £16.7m; slightly less than Ronaldo.

Rodriguez's previous $252m (£153m) contract with the Texas Rangers comes in at number two, while A-Rod's Yankees team-mates Derek Jeter ($189/10 years) and Mark Teixeira ($180m/eight years) both exceed Ronaldo, whose likely £106m contract is worth $174m.

Football's highest earner is David Beckham, who rakes in £27m per year, but only £4m comes from his club LA Galaxy; the rest is sponsorship and merchandising.

Ronaldo was fourth on a recently-published France Football list of the sport's highest earners behind Beckham, Lionel Messi and Ronaldinho, but he can expect his £15.5m total earnings from 2008 to increase significantly following his move to Madrid.

Ronaldo's possible £556,000-a-week wage in the last year of his contract works out at:

£79,428 a day

£3,309 an hour

any idea how to get my laptop working in normal mode??laptop make and model, please..

Have you changed any hardware or software before the problem occured?

Try powering down your computer. Turn it back on and tap the F8 key..When Advanced Options appear, select "Last Known Good Configuration"....

If that doesn't work power down get start computer again and get back to the Advanced Options MENU, and select "safe mode with NETWORKING"...When you are totally booted up and logged in...Do this:

Click START, control panel, on the left-hand side click on "classic view", find Device Manager and click on that...When Device Manager opens click on the "+" sign next to "Display ADAPTERS", right-click on the item in the submenu and click update, and see if Windows will find an updated video driver that might fix the problem...

Solve : DVR Composite or IP based video capture?

Answer»

Trying to weigh the advantages and disadvantages to Composite Digital RECORDING vs IP Digital Recording with an IP digital communication over cat 5 eye vs composite analog to digital eye.

Anyone have any suggestions or links that might show a good comparison.

Looking into installing a security setup at our SMALL food store and wondering what is more reliable instead of video quality pretty much.

We have LOOKED at Panasonic brand, and some sales reps have suggested Honeywell. Since this is computer technology related but doesnt fit any other category, I placed it here.

ThanksIP-based gives you access to a WIDE range of software you can use.  I've been pretty impressed with that kind of stuff.  Dedicated recorders are more user-friendly though.

Solve : How many times have you reinstalled any Windows version on your computer(s)??

Answer»

exatly but its hard for me to do that at times cause I dont have a good connection but at any rate if I could a while ago all my machines would have been just windows.  I voted for 10+.
My installs have a habit of either staying for a good long time, because I'm careful, or getting hosed quickly because I'm testing something (this was before I started using virtual machines).
I wouldn't like to guess how many times I've installed or reinstalled OSes from NT4 to Vista on all the machines I own or have OWNED, probably upwards of 100.I have a XP pc that just for testing an not active so I suppose its more then what I was thinking. If I recall correctly:

Win XP on my main desktop PC: initially installed 5/14/04 and never reinstalled since then.  I don't anticipate reinstalling until I upgrade the motherboard and CPU, which I would like to do soon.

On my Vista Laptop, purchased in July 2007, reinstalled the OS once after having it a few months.

Going back to an older COMPUTER with Win 98SE, reinstalled Win 98SE several times, not sure of exact number of times.

Going back to Win 3.1 and Win 95, I can't recall exactly but I believe there were a few re-installations of each.  I once transferred a hard drive with Win 95 from a Pentium (the above PC that had been upgraded to Win 98SE) to a 486 and got Win 95 working on the 486 without installing from scratch.  I know that's not the normal way to install an OS but Win 95 came on an OEM disk and I was not sure whether it could be installed on the 486.  Both computers were Packard Bell.  When I did this, Win 95 repeatedly displayed the Found NEW Hardware wizard and I eventually got all device drivers properly updated and the 486 then ran fine with that "installation" of Win 95.  I used to do a fresh install every 6 months.  Now I USE Acronis and I still reinstall every 6-9 months but it is A LOT quicker now.10 or morenever reinstalled no need to , OR HAVE I ??I've had to reinstall XP 3 times:

  • First time some software didn't really like XP and overwrote critical system files (and somehow made the HDD read only)
  • Second time got infected with a dailer which McAfee couldn't detect (Piece of crap)
  • Third time the HDD was failing so I installed on a new drive.

I'm planning on getting a new drive for my Vista machine, so it would be 4 in the near future.Wow if I thought you were talking in total on different machines that I've owned and used over the years, I would have clicked 10 or more.
I clicked on 9 just for Win XP PRO.

I have had Windows from version 3.11 onwards, so that would have been 4 installs, moved on to Win95 x2, 98 x2, 98SE x4, W2K x3, 2000 PRO, XP and then XP PRO x 9.
That doesn't include drives dying and formatting to reinstall, mainly XP.
Hmmm I wonder if that's a Windows fault .... maybe the user.

Oh and for those that might ask... Yes they are all legal copies.. Hahaha

please forgive my awkward sense of humor.......A lot of large organisation use virtualisation now.  Partly because powerful hardware can do so much more than run one operating system now.  It is a major boon in the hosting industry because you can create a high degree of separation between clients.  E.g. rather than have several web sites for different clients running on one server, they can all have their own server.  No chance of directory traversal attacks.  Also, in the event of a disaster, recovery is easy.  You just restore an image of the virtual machine onto any of your servers.  Done. I mostly use ms virtual pc and ms virtual server. Sure, two letters difference- not quite the same.but what if you're on an island with cannabalism your only hope?Your only hope of what?  Dying with a guilty conscience?and more importantly, are you able to acquire ketchup?

hmmm, that would make a rather interesting, if not disturbing ketchup commercial. something along the lines of a miracle whip commercial, but with ketchup, and the implication of cannibalism.

Read pages 22-30(not the .pdf generated pgs but the actual pages listed on the book.)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=8EGUFEX7Wow, I have never known another steamier pile of crap to be put into print.

Here is the problem though- this "morality" you and the book attribute to "god" existed LONG before the god we hear of today, or any gods of various other cultures; Take Stone age man. Now, I'm sure they were pretty violent, but in general, they had this human element known as Compassion.

Compassion, not necessarily "god" or any other form of super-being, is where morality get's it's base.

The book goes on to argue, that the very idea that murder is wrong is brought on by this supposed moral law brought on by the existence of god's laws.

The problem is, that isn't where your so-called "universal moral law" comes from. As mentioned, it's part of us, as human beings, ability to have compassion for other living things, but, more so, our respect for the relationships that us, as human beings, create amongst ourselves.

The basic idea is simple- actions that break these strings are definitely immoral, since they rip apart the fabric of society. Murder, obviously fits this bill. By killing another, you not only.. well- kill another.... but you also negatively impact the people that care about that person. Even more humourous, is that in the Anarchic chaos the book seems to preach, a murder of a families loved ones wouldn't be shrugged off, but rather dealt with quite angrily. More to the point, I find it ironic that, in order to try to justify their supposed right to steal the intellectual property of others, people actually have to go so far as to support the idea of a chaotic and lawless society.

A further irony is found in that, if such a state was to suddenly occur, these people, who, in most circumstances, limit their exercise to less then an hour a day, have stringy arms and legs and can barely lift their kitty-cat, would find that without order there would be no commerce. without commerce, industry collapses. without industry, BOWLS aren't made. so let me reach my point.

People with meaty STRONG arms, powerful legs abd a penchant for violence are likely to want to continue to eat soup, and still enjoy the smashing of the bowl afterward.

So, I'm sure we'd find said people quite able to overpower the so-called anarchists and create fashionable soup bowls out of their skulls and matching spoons out of their kitty-cats. All they have to do is smash their face in with a big rock, scoop out the brains, and TADA! it's a new bowl! After all, I mean- It's just a life. Good deal for a new soup bowl.

And even those that do survive for the longest will have difficulty adapting to the very chaos they subscribed to wanting- while order prevailed. Apparently none to aware that the order was what was preserving them, and their ability to support chaos. After all, once all network admins have had their skulls carved out into soup bowls, who will maintain the internet? Nobody. How will the self-proclaimed anarchist survive without his life-line to the virtual world, where he can scream his commitment to chaos, while at the same time adhering to a orderly existence elsewhere.

What does this have to do with the subject at hand? Why, quite a lot. The book goes on to essentially say that without the shackles of this moral law (since, the book previously used flawed logic to remove that concept) we can do whatever we want?

Oh really? If everybody were to suddenly believe that, well- then we have complete disorder and chaos! the perfect catalyst for a skulls to be smashed and/or turned into decorative bowls. Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 06, 2009, 11:00:26 AM
Oh really? If everybody were to suddenly believe that, well- then we have complete disorder and chaos! the perfect catalyst for a skulls to be smashed and/or turned into decorative bowls.

People very rarely think through the logical consequences of post modern, relativistic, "I'll do whatever the *censored* I like" morality.

Personally, I don't think one can assert an absolute moral law without an absolute moral law giver but apart from that, I agree with BC's position.does that include the whole "decorative bowl" angle I covered?  Absolutely.  Good metaphor.

Mind you the pic has been with the sign most of the morning and the site is constantly saying "Can't Find the Web Address".

Also, When you do get in the same page displays the same numbers over and over even when I clear my cookies.

Can the site be manipulating the votes in favor of one person, or is there likely a problem with my machine.  Others of us voting for this one person are also going through this problem.

Thanks guys.

Yes, and I just clicked it.Thank you. Now say they don't have enough band width...if they were to keep a huge amount of ppl from voting could that compensate and give them, um whatever...more ability to serve others? Could that be why davidarchie has had no ability to vote most of the day, and why the site is saying the web address is unknown?Archies' photo is in GIF format......all the rest are JPEGS....right click in photo>properties

If that makes any difference.........he is the only one without a +Karnac, most of the guys here know I'm not comp SAVVY. What are you saying? The photo needs to be re[laced.I don't know casse...it was just an observation I made.....maybe a photo uploaded as a JPEG would solve the problem...I don't know for sure....perhaps someone else can chime in as to whether this is the cause.Yes, Please! Thank you Karnac. And I did check, of course you're right. Strange enough, I clicked on his picture, WENT to his page, went back to the main page and now there's a + sign by his photo....lolLOL... mean Karnac, you just have to have been a part of this MADNESS for the past week or so especially the Elite contest which began Wednesday when all of us even the ppl at Mallplace were pulling their hair out.

When I first addressed a problem with them their response was we had no idea this thing would be so huge. I could only respond, but you had David Archuleta in it, and don't you know about his fanbase.

We're trying everything so I'll try this as well. TY...[

so it's click his pic, then let that open, which takes forever, everything takes forever, then go back to the page with the pics and the "+" sign may be there. Okay roger wilco./b]
Guys, I placed this thread in my clubs messages and now a question to you:

Sometimes this counter will change and we can see the number turn over immediately however, other times it doesn't so we don't. So when we click that "+" and the number doesn't change does the vote get registered when we click and we don't need to see the change? By the way, if you vote the picture always darkens, then goes back to color, which I hope means the vote has been sent.

This ii more about when a vote is actually registered. TYG
I think the darkening of the photo indicates a vote has been entered/registered.....
I hope so Karnac, because we have gotta move some votes. Thanks guys I'll post back if more replies come in Any idea is appreciated.

Oh oh...Um, do you guys remember the movie "Groundhog Day"? Well, maybe you can tell me why when I click on this site which is in my favorites I have gotten the same page four times now today? These Even if the numbers changes when I vote. the next 20 minutes the same page will come up again with the same numbers. Is this also because of the band width of Mallplace? It's like I'm just wasting my time to see the same numbers all the time.

I have McAfee suite on my computer and am wondering whether the use of the following online scanners and prior use of HiJack This( with instruction from a helper on another forum)  has or will have effect on my McAfee suite:House Call 6.6, Super AntiSpyware Free Edition, MicroSoft One care and Kaspersky.  Should these appear in Program files, the registry,PROGRAMS and Features(I have Vista Home Premium SP1) if I have correctly used these? What do you do to make sure you have nothing conflicting after such a vetting? Is there SOMETHING in Windows Vista that you should disable if you think you have a virus/malware/spyware/trojan and then enable afterwards so that restore points or whatever aren't affected by malware? I know these are BIG questions.  Thanks for any INPUT! npersn31

I do not know if this will clarify my issue or muddy the waters more.  I am having trouble with fixing McAfee after disabling both virus scanning and spyware scanning in order to run "on demand" scanners. My favorite forum is very busy with McAfee problems, and someone is advising people what to do when they cannot "fix" McAfee. Details are sketchy there as to those posters problems and I pm'ed the helper with a detailed description of one incidence of my problem. Unfortunately, he says he has never used McAfee and cannot tell me what to do!

Can anyone advise me what to do with this thread or what to do about these problems? This newbie is overly impressed by anyone who seems to know what they are doing!
npersn31You're not saying what is the actual problem with your McAfee.

As for scanners....
HouseCall, and Kaspersky are both very good on-line scanners, and since they're on-line scanners, they won't appear to be listed under Program Files. They install only a small applet, which allows communication between your computer, and on-line scan.
Those on-line scans are often busy, and they take a long time.
I suggest scanners, you can install on your computer, so you don't have to worry if the on-line scanning site is busy, or not:
- Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php
- SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users: http://www.superantispyware.com/

What is going on along with not being able to fix McAfee with only using the "Fix" button, is the single-occurrence of the problem of the computer showing a screen asking if I want to load Windows Vista.  Vista is only thing on here and prior to removing the scanners mentioned in my first POST of this thread from my desktop, I was using them. Trying to keep from interferring with the "good work" my suite does. A friend thought that this single-occurrence problem might indicate a virus.  I have problems with HouseCall 6.6 in that it hangs after I accept the terms, it supposedly does update/install 'thing' , and simply goes on 'idle'. Nothing I have run finds anything but cookie/trackers.

Not sure if you want or need this, but the version of Security Center is version 8.1 (Build 8.1.175), Virus Scan is version 12.1(Build 12.1.111),Personal Firewall  is version 9.1 (Build 9.1.108). McAfee Virtual Technician finds among other things: in the report under “Security Center” the following appears way down past excessive details:

Top Issue: No updates available Top Issue: Application Configuration Error when installing McAfee Products
But apparently everything is “fine”. The full report said much more than this, but is way too long to quote.

I am uncertain what else would be helpful. Thanks for the reply npersn31

Being not able to fix McAfee by clicking "Fix" button is very common McAfee issue. The main reason - McAfee is more, or less worthless program.
However, if you want to fix the issue, this is how.
Uninstall McAfee through Add\Remove. Then run McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool: http://majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html
When done, install fresh copy of McAfee.
Don't waste your time on any other "fixes" because this is the only way to make it work.I'd like to know:
* (1)what I could replace McAfee with that isn't worthless, isn't likely to have problems with Vista SP1 or my future update to Vista SP2 ;
* (2) how to accomplish this without being clobbered online{no second computer to download to....}
* (3) and what to do to make sure on demand scanners aren't running in the background.
npersn31 1. - Avast! free antivirus: http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free PC Tools Firewall Plus: http://www.pctools.com/firewall/

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
NOTE. During installation, Comodo will also allow you to install AV only, or firewall only, if you prefer to combine one Comodo product with some other product.

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on, or use PC Tools Firewall Plus.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

IMPORTANT! Make sure, you use only ONE antivirus, and ONE firewall.

2. No other way.

3. As the name implicates (on-demand), those scanners don't run in the background. They run only, when you ask them to run.If I install Avast or Avira(just one! ), is the recommendation to install PC Tools Firewall Plus or will either A/V work with Comodo firewall?  Which is the best firewall? Installing the Comodo Suite looks simpler in my uninformed view, but is it?

Is there no way to download an exe to desktop with say Windows firewall on and McAfee disabled and then disconnect cable modem from the wall so as to be offline? Of course McAfee would have to be uninstalled first along with McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool used right after...I see you have that tool at Major Geeks and wondered why. Does McAfee's web site not have this tool or is there something wrong with the one there?

On different Windows installations, I have:
- Avast + Comodo firewall
- Comodo suite
- Avira + PC Tools firewall
...all combinations work fine.

McAfee site provides the very same tool. Nothing wrong with it.
This is what you do.
1. Download all programs, you want to install (don't install them yet).
2. Physically disconnect from the internet.
3. Uninstall McAfee through Add\Remove.
4. Run McAfee tool.
5. Install downloaded program(s).
6. Reconnect to the internet.

Iam working on a project, and it involves finding information about business people in my COMMUNITY.  What I need to KNOW is, are there any other sites available other than people finder and people search sites that will GIVE me more in depth information about them?  For example business OWNER and business name, age, spouses name, age; do they have kids and what age and where do the kids go to school at?  If they are older and the kids are older, do the kids have grandkids and so forth.  Thanks for the help in advance.if i was in your community i would not like you to find out that about my family , i would consider it privatewhy not just call up people from the phone book? Maybe they can help you out EASILY if they know it's for a project. and I assume it's for school?

Solve : I'm trying to set up an AOL dial up connection without their software?

Answer»

I followed the directions and it dials up and tries to connect but then it says error 718. REMOTE computer did not respond in a timely manner.

Does that mean I set something up wrong or that AOL is just BUSY? It dials up and dials in just fine-it's not giving me a busy signal or anything.

I used these directions except I chose to connect using a dial-up modem.

Thanks in advance for any advice. How MANY different access #'s have you tried ? ?We only have one here that is local so it's the only one I can try:(

Should I just keep trying or what? Have I set it up correctly?
I'm just curious why you're trying to connect to them without their software?  What operating system do you have on your computer? It's not for me it's for my MIL. Her computer works fine but every time you open AOL EVERYTHING on it slows to a crawl so I THOUGHT if she could connect without their software it might solve the problem .

She's running Windows XP in older HP laptop.

Solve : Recovery Drive Defrag?

Answer»

Hi all ,

I have an HP Pavillion dv2000 running xp. I'm using disk keeper lite to do my defrag and just finished my c drive. I tried doing my HP_RECOVERY (D:) drive and everything is in red and DKL is telling me it did the best it could. The file sys is Fat32 Capacity is 12,033 mb free space is 1,418 mb % free space is 11%

Why does the c drive need to be defraged so often? It seems right after you do a defrag a few minutes later it needs it again. lol Quote

Capacity is 12,033 mb free space is 1,418 mb % free space is 11%
On C, or D?
There is no reason to touch D drive at all. It's not used by your computer whatsoever.D drive should be left alone, in case you need to recover system with the HP restore system.

For defragging drive, you are writing to the hard drive EVERY time you are doing something, so it seems and things get fragmented   So.... I should LEAVE drive "D" alone? lol

I HEAR YOU LOUD N CLEAR.

well, don't come complaining to me if you somehow need to or want to restore computer to START from scratch, don't have an windows cd handy and the D drive partition restore system isn't FUNCTIONING right

I think diskeeper handles the auto defrag just fine, I use it on my windows vista machine I have and seriously, that recovery partition isn't supposed to take up so much space anyway.

Dude I was kidding!

I asked a stooooopid question and responded tongue in cheek. My "D" drive never gets touched and thanks a mill. Quote from: MP1975 on June 04, 2009, 11:17:37 PM

Solve : display size issues?

Hello Everyone

I would like to resize my screen, (not by using DIFFERENT resolution).
It me explain better basically I would like to ADD a BLACK boarder within my screen. Has anyone got any ideas on how i can accomplish this.

It sounds a weired request but I have a projector, because of the distance from the wall the image is huge!! I cant move the projector closer, so the only work around is to make the screen appear with a black boarder around it thus making it appear smaller.

Has any one got any THOUGHTS please

Many thanks
M

ps. I tried using the lenses on the FRONT of the projector, also there are no "re-size" settings in the projector options.      Hello, mbrown.
The black border can be obtained using monitor menu (stretch etc). I am not sure if it helps You with Your projector though... Try it.

Solve : Wireless Mouse HELP - Please?

Answer»

I just got a Targus wireless mouse - my first wireless and I am utterly confused.  How do you know that it's fully charged?

There is a red INDICATOR light on the USB receiver that has been glowing red since I plugged it into the cmputer.  The mouse has worked right out of the box once I synced it with mouse but plugged it into a USB port to charge.
The manual says 8 hours and it's been 11 and the light is still red on the receiver.

Nlow.. it doesn't say anywhere in the manual what that means so I am assuming that it changes to green? when the mouse is full charged.  For all I know it just glows red b/c it's plugged in and will always be like that.  I don't know, that's why I am asking.

Since it worked immediately before I even went to charge it I can't tell if it's charged fully or not.  Does the red light turn green on Targus mice?
I am freaking out b/c I want to be able to shut my laptop down - it's been running on high performance w/ no sleep and no hibernation for a continous charge for hours now.

Anyone have Targus mice?  How do I know it's charged and how do I know it' needs charging?

Broni, mine doesn't have the results either like Carbon's. It's likely they're doing one of their tests again with some of their visitors to see how it works best. Just a FYI, Microsoft's rebranded search engine seems to do the same thing for me; not showing total results.I went to www.google.com and I get the same result as Broni. Awful!

If you really despise it, add a .hk to the end. Here is what is happening, I tested out firefox AND also internet explorer (IE8) on my computer  and they are not the same. On firefox, you get the new, uninspiring search (the one carbon and broni hates) and in internet explorer, you get the old style with the number of hits next to the results displayed.

See?

Firefox:

IE8:
If I GO to http://www.google.com.hk/, number of hits are displayed.IE8 doesn't display number of hits at regular google.com, either.google.ca seems to work on all my machines, with the preferred (old) behaviour.

I'd go to google.com, but it forces me to google.ca  Quote from: Broni on June 01, 2009, 03:45:25 PM

IE8 doesn't display number of hits at regular google.com, either.

I have proven it did work on my computer, it still does for me and it's from http://www.google.com the original google page as shown in the screenshot I posted earlier.

I think I'm the only person who's posted in this thread that is still getting the good 'ole number of hits with search from the original google in internet explorer 8

I wonder why google decided to change all of a sudden when there was no problem with it's original setup?Turn off Safe Search...How do you do that? What is Safe Search anyway?

Yes.My first reaction to this was "Bing?  What a cheesy name!"  But then I am accustomed to using Google and Yahoo without batting an eyelid and those names are ARGUABLY far sillier.Looks LIKE it's now live. Tested it out and it's not bad but the results pages seem really messy to me. One of the REASONS I believe Google is still #1 is because it's so simple looking. Keep It Simple Stupid (KISS)

I think Yahoo! is equally simple looking. But I like the results better than google. They seem easier to sort through.Maybe it's from "ba-da-boom, ba-da..."

Solve : How to Stop Laptop Theft?

Answer»

If you run a small business, your biggest IT worry is probably not when or whether to upgrade to Vista; it's how to keep your valuable equipment--and the even more precious data it contains--out of the hands of thieves. Laptops and mobile gadgets like cell phones, PDAs, and USB flash drives have become a necessity in many business settings. And such equipment now spends more time than ever outside the office, as employees work at home or in the nearest Starbucks.
That development presents a huge opportunity for loss and theft. Laptop thefts out of parked cars and conference rooms may grab headlines, but a far greater number of devices simply get left behind in places like cabs, subways, and airplanes. YouGetItBack.com reports that La Guardia airport alone has accumulated more than 70,000 unclaimed laptops and PDAs in its lost and found. According to Accenture, 10 to 15 percent of all handheld computers, PDAs, mobile phones, and pagers are eventually lost by their owners.
Laptops have become increasingly attractive targets for identity thieves, too. A 2006 Ponemon Institute study reported an 81 percent increase in the number of companies reporting stolen laptops between 2005 and 2006. Even notebooks that never leave the office can be targets, as many thefts are inside jobs.
Most small businesses can weather the physical loss of a laptop or two, especially if their insurance policy covers the hardware. But the files on the machine may raise more-troubling issues: They can hold trade secrets or financial and customer data; they may not be backed up on a central server; and losing them may TRIGGER embarrassing public reporting requirements under several recent federal and state laws.
According to a 2007 survey by McAfee and Datamonitor, a data breach involving personal customer information could cost a company, on average, $268,000 in reporting expenses--even if the data is never used. And one-third of the companies surveyed said that a major security breach had the potential to put them out of business entirely.
You can take several key steps to protect both your laptops and your data. By adopting these measures, you'll greatly reduce your risk of losing key hardware and data.
Track Your Laptop With an ID
The first step is to slap an ID tag on each laptop, BlackBerry, digital camera, and USB key your business owns, and record it with a recovery service. An astonishingly large number of businesses never record even the serial numbers of their equipment, police SAY, making it impossible for authorities to reunite found items with their rightful owners. Tracking tags give you an opportunity to enter serial number information as you tag each item, after which you can use the recovery service as a basic inventory system. (You should definitely maintain serial-number records, as well as purchase receipts, in case of insurance claims.)
Recovery services report recovery rates of 75 percent and higher on tagged items. Evidently, most people who find laptops are honest, and by offering prepaid returns and a reward on the tag (which lists an 800 number), the service makes it easy to do the right thing.
The services have you register each item on the Web, with identifying information; then they contact you to arrange return if an item is found. The price is nominal, usually around $5-$10 per label, with QUANTITY discounts. Vendors that offer labeling and recovery services include ArmorTag, BoomerangIt, StuffBak, TrackItBack, YouGetItBack.com, and zReturn.

Draw your own conclusions.I suspected as much, for a variety of reasons.

I point out to the original poster that it is best to, at the least "quote" the article via the Insert Quote button -- even better still to provide a link, or at least the name of the author. Quote from: Aegis on May 27, 2009, 02:52:18 PM

It's called leeching...Nobody likes leechers, even on Sythe.org, the lowest of all forums.actually, it's called Plagiarism.
"leeching" is just a meaningless term used by those of inferior intelligence whose vocabulary doesn't consist of real words that are longer then 5 or 6 letters.

No offense, of course. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 27, 2009, 03:58:35 PM

Actually, leeching does have a meaning. Leeching, is the act of being like a leech, sucking off the host (or plagiarizing). It might not be an OFFICIAL word in whatever dictionary you want, but that's what it means.

And btw, leeching is a real word by the CHF Spell Check...leeching is what a leech does. any other usage is metaphorical based on that. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 27, 2009, 04:14:40 PM

Just deal with the fact that saying "He's leeching." is gramatically correct. It may be metaphorical, but it still works.Except you never said "he's leeching" you said:

Quote
It's called leeching

And it isn't. It's called plagiarism. Deal with that. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 27, 2009, 04:24:37 PM

But I did say that saying "He's leeching." is grammatically correct.Guys, this is a computer issues forum, not a grammar police forum.  Enough!Just smack them with it when they try an take it.  Personally there is a free way of doing it which I havent worked out since know one is willing to help me with part of it.  I can however get the other part working but know way to read the code its self. Most thefts, from what I understand, are not direct -- the TARGET is not directly confronted.  Laptops are stolen when no one is around, or when people are distracted.  Airport security checks, and the distractions they provide, are a prime example of a high-theft situation.I suppose the best distraction is one you never see comeing but are on the look out for.

no replies yet  .. am guessing either u guys have missed my thread or dont knw solution  Have a look on www.keene.co.uk (under VIDEO conversion) or your local equivalent.  Plenty of conversion equipment there that will do the job.lol those r so expensive .. any cheaper way ? thanks for replying BUY a PCMCIA/PC Card S-Video adapter.  Google can find one for you.I'll never get over the fact that people want to watch TV on their PC....Um...  I thought this was the other way round - the OP wants to use a large TV screen as an external monitor for the laptop.  Did I miss the point?

Off topic: the OP's signature requires comment:

Quote

nobody is perfect.........but i am not nobody....therefore i am perfect

This is logically incorrect.  Choose from:

1. nobody is perfect.........but I am nobody....therefore I am perfect

or

2. nobody is perfect.........but I am not nobody....therefore I may or may not be perfect

Solve : forgotten security password?

Answer»

Hi. I have recently added a new laptop to our household. We have internet service and a router but our daughter with a new laptop is unable to ACCESS the internet because I have our network secured. I can't remember the password to change it. HELP!! Can somebody help me and walk me through the process?? Thank you Can you log into the router and change it there, or is the password to log into the router the same as what you've set up your security for?

Alan <><  How do i log into my router?? Do I use the setup CD?you might have to reset the router and start over. (with the router, I mean) to reset the password.

For the record, HOWEVER, you can usually access the router's configuration pages by POINTING your browser to one of the following:

http://192.168.0.1
http://192.168.1.1
http://192.168.11.1

and some others. Your manual should have the default address. ANOTHER way to FIND out would be use IPCONFIG to determine your gateway address.

Even so doing, however, you would need to old password to create a new one. This is why I suggest simply resetting the router (almost all routers have a small "reset" button on them) which clears their settings. Then you can use your preferred method- likely the "setup CD" to reconfigure the router- this time setting a password you'll remember  If the OP has lost various passwords, she needs to bear in mind that if this is a broadband router and she resets it, she will need to re-enter her broadband service username and passwords as well as all the others...
