Hi
How can I find my friend on internet?
I know (and I’m sure) he has an account in Yahoo and Google.
I only have his name and family.I lost his account and phone number.

Please help
Thanks

Call and ask... there are no Internet Email DIRECTORIES. Search!  Search engines, on-line phone directories (WHITE pages, yellow pages) -- start pokin' around!  You could try lookin for him at social sites like myspace or facebook ETC too, In find friends type his name and select find by name, if you know his school etc you can find by school too, maybe that might help! Solve : STICKYKEYS!!!?

Answer»

I accidently Hit a keyboared key (I think It was the CTRL) Key 5 times and got an error MESSAGE. Forgot exactly what it said.  Anyway, It was a stickykey thing, Now everytime I start up my computer There Is a icon In the sytem tray that shows up. Its the sticky key thing. I cant find it on my add and remove, And it makes a loud sound when I hit certain keys. How can I get rid of It and what Is its purpose?Do you mean a hotkey? He accidentally ENABLED the stickykeys applet and wants to know how to shut it off.

what happens when you CLICK or right-click the sticky-keys icon in the system tray? Is there not an option to quit?

EDIT: Nope, I just checked.

Failing that- open control panel, select Accessibility options, And on the keyboard tab, you can disable those features you don't want. (I for one, have them all disabled).

I had done it on Server08 till just now, it makes a pretty weird sound as well indeed, chrisxs5- but pressing it 5 times again will enable it again. I don't believe the OP requires the functionality presented, so I provided a solution to disable it completely. Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 24, 2008, 01:57:02 PM

Actually, in Vista, pressing shift 5 times will open a prompt, asking you if you want to enable it... same as XP, but close enough. besides, that is what happened the first time the OP pressed it five times- an "error message" to which they clicked OK, enabling StickyKeys. There ya go, then! All comments; are very true and accurate. But, I tend to deal with all my situations from a "I don't really want to get up form my desk" scenario. So from what I have scene in most cases regarding StickyKeys, is that the user gets frustrated and hits a bunch of keys, after that they accidentally turn on StickyKeys and call me; I immediately tell them to hit the shift key 5 times and then I look like a hero again. Yes of course it can be disabled and technically if we really wanted to take the time it can be removed entirely form the system with no trace of ever existing...  But in this case, it just SEEMED as if the, "hit the shift key 5 times", answer worked very well and gave an insight to how it happened in the first place.  All hail Chrisxs5! Solve : Stuck CD in CDROM?

Answer»

Can I leave the CD stuck there and shift to an external CDROM without causing some type of conflict. The reason I ask is because the CDROM spins when I BOOT and I often have to press the eject button to get rid of a humming sound. IF not, then how do I inactivate the CDROM so that it doesn't interfere with the external one I might want to install?

BTW
Using Windows 95With the power on or off you can use a STRAIGHT paper clip and poke it in the hole on the front of the CD drive and the door will open to retrieve/re=seat the CD...
How are you going to use an external CD on Win 98 ? ?
Do they have Win98 drivers for the device ? ? Quote from: patio on SEPTEMBER 16, 2008, 11:40:50 PM

Try as I might I cans find no hole in front of the CD drive. The only place I can stick anything in is the slot where the CD goes. EXCEPT that the CD is stuck inside. I spoke with a computer repair firm and they said they don't know how much they will charge to fix it. So since they can't put a ceiling on their charges I chose to PASS.

Solve : Getting into safe mode with USB keyboard??

Answer»

Another problem, or two. My ps2 keyboard had some non functioning keys, so I got a USB board, but now I can not get XP to recognize the USB keyboard on startup, in order to to get into safe mode. I was told there was another way, by running 'msconfig', and doing it from there, but when I try, I get yet another error message saying that Windows cannot find 'msconfig'. What!? Please, can you solve either? As always, any civil response is welcome. What operating system are you running?
What is the new keyboard?

Try plugging the new keyboard in whilst Windows is running.
How are you trying to find MSConfig? Through RUN or Command Prompt?Borrow a PS/2 keyboard. (The "other kind" of keyboard.) Nothing to do with PS2 games consoles, by the way.

There is a well known USB keyboard "gotcha" - namely that if "USB Legacy Support" is not enabled in the BIOS, you cannot press a key to get into the BIOS to enable it. (Sometimes it is sometimes called "Enable USB keyboard and mouse").

For your USB keyboard or mouse to work with MS-DOS-based utilities and non-Windows modes (such as before Windows has loaded, when you need to press F8 to ENTER safe mode), your computer must have USB Legacy Support enabled in the BIOS. USB Legacy Support allows the BIOS to interact with a USB keyboard, and in limited cases, a USB mouse.

If USB Legacy Support is DISABLED in the BIOS, you will not be able to use your USB mouse or keyboard in any of the following situations:

Running your computer in Safe mode.

Using a Windows Startup menu.

Starting your computer in MS-DOS mode (instead of opening a MS-DOS session from Windows).

Starting your computer from a floppy disk or leaving a floppy disk in the drive when you TURN on or restart your computer.

Windows "blue screen" errors that ask you to "Press any key to continue".

Responding to ScanDisk and other messages during the start-up sequence.

Editing or upgrading the BIOS.

Entering a BIOS password.

So....

Borrow PS/2 keyboard

Switch off computer

Plug in PS/2 keyboard

Unplug USB keyboard

Power up computer

Enter the BIOS setup

Set Enable USB legacy support

Save & exit BIOS setup

Start & shut down Windows

Switch off

Unplug PS/2 keyboard

Plug in USB keyboard

Give BACK PS/2 keyboard

From now on, you can enter safe mode with your USB keyboard.
I run XP. The keyboard was so cheap, it has no Brand. Straight from China. It was only to be a backup. It works, except for getting into safe mode. I tried to find MSConfig through 'RUN'. AS for now, I will follow Dias de veranos' advice. I will get back to you asap.I predict success...SUCCESS! Thanks guys.Congrats !
Everyone should have a PS2 keyboard...even if it sits in the closet most of the time.My laptop doesn't have a PS/2 port. I REALLY hate that.

Solve : A small computer problem.?

Answer»

Well, I'm out of ideas on this brand new problem I've been encountering with my PC and I'm not sure which exact forum this should go in, so I'll try here.

You see, the problem I am having only occurs when I run a program such as JKA, Flight Simulator, or any other game - but not with other smaller programs like Xfire or other programs of minute status. The problem also only occurs 5-15 minutes into the gameplay of the program, and can be cured by minimizing the program or shutting it down. The problem also ends up turning into a "critical error" system reboot if I let a program run with the problem too long, or minimize the program too long and try and maximize it again.

The problem itself is hard to explain, since the only actual indications of it are audible - the PC simply sounds like it does at Windows startup or when you throw in a disk; that high-pitch, loud, full-fan, full-CPU sound most computers make when you throw in a disk or start the computer. Another hint at the 'problem', is that the CPU Indications of the computer are at 100%. Both outputs, on any program. This is irregular, as the most stressful game or program I have only throws on 40-50% stress on the CPU, never 100%, as the following picture details:

The above picture describes what my CPU and temperatures are doing during the time of this odd ''high CPU'' condition. The green bar represents the CPU during the maximized condition of a program. The moment I minimized the program, this time Microsoft Flight Simulator X, you can see the result where the green bar, or CPU output, drops down below 50% to where it normally is for this program, and the ''loud computer sounds'' die down once more to a calm tone. The moment I re-mazimize the program, the ''loud computer sounds'' and high CPU output will continue again 5 to 15 minutes after re-maximization.

Before I continue, I'd like to display my Computers technical stats...

CPU:  2 processors running - AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
CPU Speed: 2.20 GHz Performance Rated at 6.30 GHz
System RAM: 2.0 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (Build 2600)
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT (GeForce 7950 GT)
Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio
Video Card Features: 512.0 MB Video RAM, 3.0 Pixel Shader.

Also, the problem only recently BEGAN to occur (After I transported the PC from school back home VIA car). Otherwise, there is no actual reason for this to happen. The PC is infact an HP with selected parts from a computer store.

The Problem itself apparantly is not curable. This is a detailed list of what I have tried so far to fix it:

  • I have first deleted all of my installed programs and games. This including Microsoft Flight Sim, Civilization IV, and even FireFox.
  • I have used Control Panels ''Performance and MAINTANANCE'' tab to delete every temporary file, internet file, and ANYTHING worth any kilobytes that can be cleaned, I then went through with ''Add or Remove Program'' and deleted anything not computer essential, including the remnents of uninstalled games. Finally, I went through the Program Files folder and purged everything. Everything.
  • Next, I uninstalled all of my drivers.
  • After a computer restart, I went and downloaded ''Perfect Disk'' Derfragging program offline, and did an entire system defrag which took 2 hours. Re-installed the drivers, restarted, re-installed the programs, restarted.
  • After that failed, I cleaned out the physical insides of the computer from dust and debris. It shines like newly washed car in the summer heat. This also denotes any heat problems, as after a detailed check, I found no heat issues.
  • I went and downloaded Anti-Virus program avast! which has had its way for 12 hours with my PC. First it did a sweep during system start before any programs could begin to run, windows included, then I went for the ''Omega, I'm going to rip through this PC like bread'' scan. Both of these showed zero viruses.

After doing all of this, I started up a program, this time Flight Sim, and sat it there for about 5 minutes. (With a nice 20 FPS drop from the stupid Anti-Virus program, which is one of the reasons I never got one in the first place...) After the occasional 5 to 15 minutes of sitting there, this time 7, the CPU ran up to max 100% output, the fans went on its high-pitch rage, and the temperatures went up 2*F. Thus destroying 2 days of hard maintanace and de-moralizing any hope I had left.

To put it bluntly, I'm about to just pick up the PC and kill it. It is a PC with gaming in mind, and this critical error has disallowed me to play any games on it, throwing its usefullness pretty much to the equivilant of my portable laptop, which atleast can travel with me. There is no reason the CPU should be spooling up like a Jet Engine not on program start, but 5 minutes into playing the game, reboot, and upon windows restart give me the infamous Windows ''Your computer has suffered a serious error'' alert. If it isn't a virus, isn't overheating, isn't drivers or program oriented, then what is it!?I know games like Flight Simulator need a lot of processing power to run, which would account for the high processor usage. Have you had this problem ever since you started playing these games or is it recent?

Also, looking at the temperature graphs, what does the pink and purple represent? (what parts of the comptuer)
All I know about the temperatures is that 144F is very hot for a computer. (about 60C)
I would try playing the game with a large fan blowing at the computer to keep the temperature low and see if the game starts to kill itself.

No, this only started to occur last week. I've had the PC, and flight sim, for the past 16 months now.

I might have worded that badly. My attempt to fix the problem I'm getting failed. Nothing I've done so far seems to have an affect.

I'll see about the fan - 60*C is pretty hot, but thats the GPU, I'm not sure about what the CPU temperature is.
I suggest try downloading and running Speedfan to see what the temperature gets up to before the game stops.

Perhaps you could check to see how much PF Usage you are using right when you start your computer up.
If you want, you may want to have a look at your startup items in MSConfig

   1.  Click Start, Run and type: msconfig and press enter.
   2. In the System Configuration Utility click the Startup tab.
   3. You can uncheck programs you don't want to start up with the computer.

Well, thats what I got from Speedfan - looks like the Core is overheating?

MSconfig didn't help. Ended up just unchecking almost everything not system critical, running it up, starting a game and the loud CPU sound started 5 minutes after, even on the basic mode.

I'm beginning to think it might be temperature related, I know I have more than 2 fans in my PC, so it shouldn't be displaying only 2 fans running. I know PF usage at startup was 320mb, not sure how that helps, but it is.Yeah, that is pretty hot.
Like I suggested earlier, try using a tower fan or another large fan and have it blow at the computer.

You're right, must be the temperature.

I have that exact fan in your picture blowing away at the PC, the GPU/Video card is at 80*C, the Core is at 75*C, but the ''loud fan sound'' isn't sounding, or has yet to occur so far with the fan blowing at it.

I think I may have a dead or clogged fan, because there is no way the video card should overheat unless the fan is busted. 75C???
do you mean fahrenheit?I would do what carbon said but also take the side of your computer and then turn it on. That will give you a chance to see which fan is acting up. Quote from: boo on May 22, 2008, 04:16:50 PM
75C???
do you mean fahrenheit?

Nope, definately 75*Celsius is what I'm getting from the core. I'll try running it open and inspect whats up, and see if the drop in temperature from doing that doesn't help.Sheesh, that is definitely too hot.  Your temp shouldn't be going above 40C.  While you have your computer open, check to make sure all of your fans are functioning properly.

This is the trouble with small computers.

Solve : how do I retrieve my folder photos??

Answer»

About a year ago some photos accidentally ended up as a FOLDER.  Now I  WOULD like to edit them using my photo EDITOR and can not retrieve them because they are in a folder.  My editor will not PULL them up because of this.  How can I get all of them out of the folders so that I can do something with them? What do you mean by a 'folder'? Do you mean a normal folder or a compressed archive/.zip file?It dont matter if there in a regular folder, you should be able to point to them an open any of them. That's right. However, you might not be able to edit them if they are in a .zip or .rar archive.Hi.
The folder they are in are regular folders.  Not zip, or any compressed folder. I have tried to open them and send them where I can open them, however; I don't seem to be able to do that.  I'm not that smart.  I tried sending them ( folders) to the zip DISK hoping that I might be able to open it up in GIMP.

Right clik the folder in Windows Explorer and select Properties....report back with the findings

Solve : New Build... lucky me...?

Answer»

Ok, here's the deal.

I'm doing some work for another computer company here in Bangkok and today they made me a nice offer. On top of my pay for training their staff, I can order the parts for one system at their cost, which is MUCH cheaper than I can even get the parts from my main supplier. I get to choose what parts I want, so here's what I was thinking and I'm interested in other people's opinions since this is a rare treat to get the parts at the cost that I am:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4Ghz
Motherboard: ASUS Striker II Formula
Video: ASUS nVidia GeForce 8800GT, 1GB, 1.7Ghz, 256bit DDR
HDD: WD Caviar SE, 300 GB, SATA 300
RAM: 2GB (1GBx2) Kingston KHX8500D2k2/1G 1066Mhz HyperX DDR2

All other components (sound, DVD/CD drives, etc.) I already have.

Basically, I can choose from anything made by these companies at cost:
Intel (boards and processors), ASUS, ASRock, Lemel, Gigabyte, Western Digital, Seagate, Kingston.

Notes:
AMD processors are not an option, as this company doesn't deal in them. They also only deal in Kingston memory.

I chose the 2.4Ghz over the 2.66Ghz because it costs them 50% less now.

Oh, and I'm not putting too much of a budget on this, seeing as I probably won't see an offer like this again. Also, I have their complete price list book here in my office (all 239 pages listing every product) so I can look things up if anyone has suggestions.get more ram and a bigger hard drive.....
what about getting a server board? you can put two quad cores on most of those and even more ram I've always wanted to see how some of these newer games would run on a server with dual quads, 8gb ram, and a sas raid....Get 4Gb of RAM, even if you stick with a 32-bit OS it'll feel a lot smoother.  I have been from 1-2Gb and 2-4Gb and you can feel the difference.
A larger HDD, or maybe 2 HDDs, is a good idea too.  With 2 HDDs you have the options for RAID, or one drive for programs and the OS and the other for media/documents etc and the paging file.  More HDDs give you even more options.
I'd also recommend an 8800GTS 512 over the 8800GT 1Gb, it's faster in most games.
The X38 chipset is a good choice but also consider the new P45 or the top of the range X48 boards.

Go crazy!  It's unlikely you'll get another opportunity like this!
So jealous . . . Quote from: michaewlewis on May 21, 2008, 10:33:46 AM

get more ram and a bigger hard drive.....

The memory is only going to cost me about $40 for the two 1GB sticks, so I can easily afford to put another 2GB in. But I just realized I put the wrong motherboard on here. I'm going to edit my first post. It was supposed to be the P5K-E, not the P5E3. The P5E3 uses DDR3, the P5K-E uses DDR2. I was also considering the ASUS Striker II Formula, but it costs a bit more than the P5K-E. Screw it, I'm confused. I think I'll go with the Striker II Formula..... it costs more, but should be worth it since it's just under $300. Newegg sells it for $449.

As for the hard drive, 300GB should be enough for me. This computer has about 200GB now and I struggle to fill that up. That motherboard has 6 SATA connections. I can ADD more drives later if needed.

For $75 more, I can get the 8800GTS (approx. $180).780i is only really useful for tri-SLI, which you can only use with the 8800GTX/Ultra or the 9800 series.
The fans on Nvidia chipsets can be really annoying too, they tend to whine.
That is a PRETTY nice board though, bit pricey for me to even consider personally, even at the discounted price. If it were me, I would get the Intel DG965WH with the Q9550.
Is the company only going to let you get 2 gb ram? if they're paying for the whole thing, why not put 4gb in right away? Quote from: michaewlewis on May 21, 2008, 11:15:07 AM

They're not paying for it, they're LETTING me pay for it at what it costs them.

They can't get the Q9550 yet. It's not on this price list (April 2008) anyway. I'll have to ask them for a copy of May's price list next time I'm out there.ah, I see....The problem with a bigger hard drive is that then there is more to worry about for backups, and restoration.

yet ?Yeah, Compaq either comes with Recovery DVDs, you can create a set, or you can call Compaq to send you a set for free.that 's OK.. the technician told me I have to buy new hard drive. and they will send me the disk

thank for your help Quote from: thongdallas on May 20, 2008, 01:46:27 PM

that 's ok.. the technician told me I have to buy new hard drive. and they will send me the disk

thank for your help

This is not right is it ?What's been right from the beginning ? ?Honestly, I have no idea what in the world is wrong or what the symptoms are, so I applaud the technician for even being able to make a suggestion, although I question it.

Solve : Computer suggestions.?

Answer»

My computer is screwed, may be the MOTHERBOARD or processor and they are pricey so im goign to buy a new pc.

I just want to know what would be a better buy with my money as both pc's are stated at $299 . These are low end systems but thats really all i need. Ill slap a higher end video card in and ill be good.

Solve : volume size limit?

Answer»

Is there still a volume size limit on NTFS VOLUMES in Server 2003? I'm working on building a NAS that will have around 9TB of hdd space and did a little READING on NTFS specs and it said you can't go past 2TB.
Is there a way to go beyond that, either with another file system or setting up the allocation unit size? You would think that since they're making 1TB drives now, that ntfs would have a higher limit, but maybe they just haven't gotten around to adding that.....
Anyone SET up a nas before? how did you do it?

Solve : Add/Remove programs...requires administrator??

Answer»

I got rid of Norton AntiVirus a while ago, but just noticed that Symantecs' Live Update was still on my computer. Trying to remove it, I keep getting the following message " You don't have sufficient access to remove it. You must contact your system administrator". I thought I was in control!? I bought this  five years ago. It's a generic machine, XP home, 1.8GHz. While watching the guy install all the soft and hardware, he asked who would be using it. I said just me and I thought that was the end of it. Is there some way of fixing this? I am not savvy enough to fool with such things. Any response welcome I found this---->Here

You may also want to try Unlocker--->Here

Unlocker is a good program remember to read  the 'readme file' that
comes with unlocker.Really simple to use.Download and run the Norton Removal Tool - http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039Thank you all for your response, however, none proved effective. I did the regedit, removed any references to Symantec, but it still shows up in the add/remove column. I ran Unlocker, but there was no program folder to unlock. Finally, I ran the Norton Removal Tool. That was a joke. First thing it did after running was to direct me to a web page to show how to load Norton back onto my computer. It APPEARS, even though XP says the program is gone and that I am, indeed the administrator, it won't let me erase the entry, even though it says I'm the only one who can!?  I'm sure it doesn't mean much in the overall scheme of things, but this kind of thing bugs me no end. In a sane world, who would tolerate being sold a product that doesn't work, ever, and yet, WE made HIM a billionaire, instead of roasting him on a spit.

Post a HJT log and let me see if it is showing there. We might be able to get rid of it that way.

    Download
HijackThis (HJT)
  • Double-click on HJTInstall.
  • Click on the Install button.
  • It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe.
  • Upon install, HijackThis should OPEN for you.
  • If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button
  • Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad.
  • Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post.
  • Do not have Hijackthis FIX anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Solve : Can't open any programs after using pc for a while.?

Answer»

When I turn on the pc and I start using it everything works fine, but after being logged on for about 15 minutes my pc acts funny, I can't open any programs or simple files, such as pictures or text files and right click does not function.  At first I thought it would be memory, but when that happens all I have running is 3 ie windows.  From the 3 ie windows that I have opened I close one to see if that changes anything, nothing happens, but when i try to open a third ie windows again, I can't, that and any other program.  I have to restart and that helps for a few minutes, but I get the same PROBLEM again.  Any help, please?
By the way I use windows vista.Did you try System Restore?
How is your computer security?More info on the machine in question and someone will be along shortly...Yes I've tried system restore, but that didn't help.  I reinstalled windows vista, I did not reformat my system just reinstalled windows vista, but that didn't help neither. Security?  Well, I have Norton antivrus and I RAN Spybot and everything seems to be fine.  Since yesterday I'm getting something new, everytime I try to scroll, the scroll bar stops, it does not freeze it just stops and I have to click on the scrollbar again to keep scrolling.   Another thing, when I have multiple ie windows opened I put one in the back to work on another window, but the one I put behind the other one comes on  by itself.

Solve : Cannot format floppy (works when writing to it)?

Answer»

I get an error with over 3 of 10 new floppy discs (from about 5 months ago) when trying to format them. I can read, and write to them.

I need to get Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics on the floppy. But over 7 of them (the ones that format perfectly) give me an error that the write protection tab needs to be closed (which it is.)

The ones that I cannot format (the 3 that I was talking about earlier) work perfectly with the Lifeguard tools. BUT when I try booting with them, it gives me ranging errors from "Cannot load DOS" to "Failed to load IBMDOS.COM, System Halted"

I tried to burn it to a CD, which burned successfully with no problem. but when I try to boot up with it, it then gives "Failed to load the license agreement file WDLice.txt, Please make sure it is loaded in the same directory as WDDIAG.EXE" When I look on the disc it's located on there. Same thing with the floppy, I found the IBMDOS.COM located on the diskette.

I am having severe problems with my hard drives right now. Something’s wrong with a corrupt volume or something (forget the error that showed up when running the repair console for vista)

I can't run the WDDLGD on windows, not only because it freezes due to something wrong with my drive, but when I tried to have it repair what it found, it couldn't because it can't lock the drive.

Any who... Keep in mind I've tried formatting the discs on other computers, same story.

The floppies can't be bad... I barely use them and I got them like a few months ago, they are Sony's.

Any idea's what might be wrong?

Any ideas what might be wrong?

(Removed apostrophe)

The drive, cable or floppy controller chip on the motherboard.

Your other problems make me think that you have problem hardware.
I tested these floppys on like 3 other computers.

The same story on every computer...

It can't be a bad floppy drive on 3 other computers can it?

That WOULD be one weird coincidence...  maybe you didn't STORE them right, and they got too hot or too wet or something. Maybe they are fake Sony product.
Hmm it could be that they got wet...

They were stored in the room that our SWAMP cooler is in...

I doubt they are fake though, I got them from staples

Oh well, Thanks. Quote
They were stored in the room that our swamp cooler is in...

Quote
In the United States, small-scale evaporative coolers are called swamp coolers by some users due to the humid air conditions produced.

Quote
The glue, called the "binder," that holds the magnetic particles in place can be easily damaged from high levels of heat and humidity.

Quote
In tapes, soft sticky binder can glue the tape together, and gum up the PLAYER. In floppies, it prevents the platter from spinning.

Quote
Temperature and humidity play a major role in the destruction of magnetic media.

Quote
Extremely high humidity can warp the platter inside a floppy and stretch of video or audio tapes. Changes in temperature and humidity can cause condensation inside the cassette box or disk. It will also cause the materials from which the tape or disk is made to expand and contract, which they will do at different rates. This expansion and contraction can cause the entire unit to warp.

Quote
Humidity is the most dangerous environmental factor. Water is the agent of the main chemical deterioration process of polymers: HYDROLYSIS. Additionally, high humidity values (above 65%) encourage fungus growth, which literally eats up the pigment layer of magnetic tapes and floppy disks and also disturbs, if not prevents, proper reading of information.

Quote
2-stage coolers cool air with a relative humidity between 50% and 70%, depending on the climate, compared to a traditional system that produces about 80% relative humidity air.

That sucks...

Well now I know ^.^

Thanks for the help. When you get some more keep them in a cool dry place. Store them vertically. It is not a good idea to buy floppies just in case you might need them one day, especially if you are taking them to a hot humid place. Buy only as many as you need for the project you are planning.

Solve : ipods/mp3 players?

Answer»

I'm looking to buy an ipod or mp3 player.
Can anyone tell me what is the difference between a flash memory and a hard drive?

Some have one, while OTHERS have the other.  I would like to know the pro's & con's.

Thank youRead here: http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/musicplay/0,39050461,61993218,00.htmThank youIf you drop the ipod it probably wont survive but if drop the mp3 player it will have a higher rate of still working.  Just something to keep in mind. And there is ALSO software and audio capabilities. ALTHOUGH I don't have an IPOD, my friend tells me he needs ITunes to put SONGS onto his Ipod but with MP3's, you just need to COPY and paste the song onto the MP3.

Solve : Possible Move Programs???

Answer»

Is it possible to move an installed program from one machine to another with out having the installation disk?In most cases, no. You can move programs, which don't need installation. You MEAN just the application shortcuts or one that will RUN no matter.Anytying from www.portableapps.com can be moved. Those apps don't need to write to the registry to run.

Anything that INSTALLS and writes to the registry isn't (easily) MOVABLE. I understand a LITTLE better  know.    I'll just look for an outdated version or something then.Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps

Solve : Everything on my desktop has disappeared!?

Since my son used my computer last weekend, it has gone hay~wire.  After logging into my computer, (after a few minutes) everything on the DESKTOP disappears and doesn't come back. A few times it would disappear and then come back. Including the taskbar below (start menu). What is the cause of this and what can i do to fix it?? Will it work OK in Safe Mode? And how old is your son?  Have you ASKED him what exactly he was doing on the computer and if he had any problems?

Also, what version of Windows do you have? Quote from: Broni on May 16, 2008, 11:20:15 PM

Solve : Anyone know of any electronic component sales sites??

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone knew of any websites that sell electronic components, such as capacitors of various types. The reason for asking is that i have a old antec smart power 350W PSU with bad caps, and a 350W Optimus stereo receiver  that also has a few bad caps, possibly a few other things, but both work, and are fixable with a lil soldering. So if anyone KNOWS where I might be able too buy the parts, please tell me, I need too get the PSU fixed so I can use it as a tester and/or a spare PSU if need be,  as for the stereo receiver, I want it fixed too replace my horribly old 35W sharp stereo, the sharp was meant too be my backup, but its been my stereo for nearly a year now since my old Onkyo stereo receiver died.  Perhaps you could tell us what COUNTRY you live in, as buying small amounts of electronic parts is best done in your own country. Import taxes and postage costs can BOOST the PRICE quite a lot, you see. I expect I can guess, given that there is one country that thinks it is the whole world  but confirmation would be helpful.
Oops, thought I had my local in my profile, I live in the USA, state of Virginia. Can't find anything locally too buy from, the phone books suck, they don't list half the crap thats there. The ones they do list are several counties over.how about frys.com?

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP IN THIS MATTERIt is against forum policy to provide advice / information on what is essentially cracking the computer.

In the past, I've been able to use the original (legitimate) operating system disk to either repair or re-install the operating system while having it save my data.  There have been other occasions where I've had no choice but to format and start over.the hint is 1? Did you TRY that as the password? try bribing the kid for the password... He probably thinks he is in trouble and won't SAY what the password is unless he knows he won't get in bigger trouble.Sorry its against the policy to answer such things.  What you could do is try using a system restore disk if you have one with this pc. Solve : Is it possible that Mal\Generic-A could infect my norton antivirus??

Answer»

It looks like that's what happened. Yesterday for no reason at all, my Norton antivirus shut down. Fortunately, I have Spysweeper, which noticed Mal\Generic-A, trying to intrude 4 times. Using Spysweeper, I BLOCKED it 4 times. I then ran several scans. The first several came back clean, but Norton was still not running properly, and kept asking for my activation code (I don't need to give it my activation code, I activated in march). Then I finally got Norton to run again, and did a scan. The scan said something like "your computer has an irreparable virus".  Not more than 2 seconds later, that message completely disappeared, with out me doing anything.

So, i went into the virus and protection settings AREA, under firewall exclusions, and noticed that there were some system files that were excluded. Not knowing much about viruses, or computers compared to some, I erased all the exclusions and started the virus scan again.

The activation key request came back on. I again didn't activate (I have a file that states the day that i activated, and my software is good until 2010).

Currently, my second norton scan is still running. I want to know if it's possible that Norton itself is INFECTED. Also i want to know how to contact norton directly from overseas (I live in Korea right now).

Anyone have any advice or suggestions?
Oh yeah, I have one more question...does anyone know how Mal\Generic-A gets into the computer in the first place? I didn't download anything, I didn't open any suspicious emails. In fact, I noticed the problem right after Spysweeper blocked a popup (I don't know what the popup was for) on a news website I was visiting.http://www.sophos.com/security/analyses/viruses-and-spyware/malgenerica.html

Quote

It sounds like you ran across a malicious site. It would be best to go to this thread and read the instructions for posting the required logs. And always be CAREFUL when it comes to deleting files you don't know, even if they look suspicious.Well, any program can become infected, with viruses from what I've seen. While I worked at a local PC shop back in 2006 MANY of the computers would remain un-updated and norton would become like.. A virus hotel or something, they'd all leech into it and various other places, quite funny.

Solve : Which e-mail program are you using??

Answer»

This is multiple choice poll.

Thunderbird, and Gmail here.I'm currently not using an e-mail client, but have used Thunderbird in the past and am considering using it again.  Right now, I leave my e-mail on the Gmail server, but I'm not sure I want to continue doing that.  I voted for both because I anticipate using Thunderbird soon.ThunderBird all the way...it's as customisable as FireFox....intuitive and easy to backup.

All one needs in an e-mail client.Thunderbird for business email, Gmail for personal stuff, Hotmail for a spam trap.Outlook Express for the majority of my e-mail, I also use Outlook for one email account.  I also have a Yahoo! Mail account and a Gmail account but don't use either of them very much; they're MAINLY just for e-mail TINKERING.  Gmail is interesting because it offers both POP and IMAP capabilities.  I enabled IMAP in my Gmail account and set up the account in Outlook Express just to get a taste of how IMAP e-mail works.Yahoo Mail is my personal email.

Netscape is used as a spam dump and the address I give out if I must register a product.

The GMail account is used as a data storage facility. I zip up my data disk weekly and send automated emails to myself for data storage.

Thunderbird and Gmailg-mail, hotmail, and yahoo. I needed different emails for certain THINGS, it's easier for me that way... Quote

Solve : How to Reach Cumpuserve User?

Answer»

I want to contact a PERSON, and the only contact information I have is his CompuServe user ID from the EARLY 1990s. I am not familiar with CompuServe (I am using Bigpond Australia) and do not know how to contact people with their user ID. Could anyone please help me?"user ID" for what?  Email?  Instant messaging?  What?

By the way, I'd say the odds of a person having the same user account they had in the early 1990s is slim.  Slim, but not impossible.

(Not that I'd ever bet against the world's smartest SOYBEAN.)

You might try the user name as an email address:  [email protected]I used to use Compuserve as my ISP back in early '90s (dial-up), but the problem with [email protected] is that, as soon you MOVE to new ISP (Compuserve doesn't exist anymore), you email address changes, and I see little chance anyone would keep old email address, which you can't even use, since ISP doesn't exist anymore.Soybean, I meant the number that follows this pattern: 7xxxx,xxxx Quote from: jde78439 on May 14, 2008, 11:22:54 PM

Soybean, I meant the number that follows this pattern: 7xxxx,xxxx
OK, that looks familiar, since I was a CompuServe customer for some years, up to about Jan 2002.  I believe most CompuServe users used some other username; it may have been tied to that user ID in CompuServe's user database.

The only thing I can suggest is to try using the user ID in this MANNER: 7xxxx,[email protected], or 7xxxx,[email protected]  csi.com replaced compuserve.com, after CompuServe was acquired by AOL, if I recall correctly. Quote from: Broni on May 14, 2008, 10:37:17 PM
(Compuserve doesn't exist anymore) ... ISP doesn't exist anymore.
I believe they still exist, but they've had to take a back seat to the Netscape name.  See http://webcenters.netscape.compuserve.com/menu/default.jspNevermind.

But thank you for your prompt replies, I didn't think it would be so soon, or maybe I come from a very slow forum.

Solve : Can't get into sent mail.............?

Answer»

I don't have AOL as a server, but I have a AOL mailbox (AIM). I went to check my mail and seen there were 231 messages sent. Tried to get into my sent mail to see what was going on, and all I get is a message saying, " An error occurred while retrieving your messages". I can't get in my sent mail, can anyone help me out?How long has this been going on?

Perhaps AOL is having technical DIFFICULTIES...How long has this been HAPPENING?

Do you mean you access your e-mail via aol.com?  If so, which browser are you using?  If not, then how are you accessing your e-mail?

Were you ever able to view your messages before this issue started?I don't have AOL as my internet provider, I have Frontiernet. Didn't like the mailbox at Frontier so I use the free AOL mailbox, I think it's AIM.
I could get in my sent mail before, just about three days ago I checked my mail and seen that it had 231 sent messages. Ever since then I can't open my sent mail. I am using Internet Explorer as my browser. So, you use a mailbox program to access your e-mail?  SORRY for my ignorance here, but I have AOL as my provider, so I don't need use any external programs or sites.

It might not prove to be a solution, but a good start would be to download CCleaner (install without YAHOO! toolbar) and configure it according to this guide.

If you do indeed use an external program, are you also able to access your email by going to webmail.aol.com?  If so, can you see the missing messages?

Let us know how it goes.

Solve : U3 smart technology?

I recently got a SanDisk Cruzer Micro 8GB which has the U3 technology. It is pretty cool but I am wondering if anyone uses the U3 and if it is worth keeping on the drive or not. Is it really useful or just taking up space? Any problems with it etc.

Also when I launched the drive it asked if I wanted to USE the U3 and I accepted it. Am I now stuck with It can be removed...
Instructions

NOTE: On most drives once removed it cannot be re-installed...
But that's OK....

Iremove U3 from every drive that has it.Thanks. I at first thought the launch pad was very cool but then applied my reasoning of cool + computers doesn't ALWAYS = good. That will now be known as EF's Computer Theorem # 23....

How TRUE it is also.Class dismissed I love my U3 flash drive

it can be so helpful when your WORKING on a project at home and at school I have two SanDisk flash drives which came with U3 on them.  I used the U3 system for a few weeks but then removed U3 and installed a program called PStart.  PStart is a menu that can be customized more than the U3 menu and PortableApps menu.  One draw back to PStart is it can not start automatically when you insert your flash drive unless you have USBDLM on the computer.

You can read my blog for how to get autorun for USB memory drives and some portable programs I use.
Yup, the U3 had to go. It was cool at first but none of the U3 stuff works with anything from portableapps.com. I certainly don't want to spend $$$ putting BELLS whistles and farts on it if I can do it free elsewhere.

I will look into USBDLM. Looks interesting.

Also check out http://www.cdmenupro.com/ Thanks for the thread, EF.

Since U3 automatically launches, I have the impression you don't really have U3 on that drive.  If you did, you'd see it launch when you connect your flash drive to the computer. Quote from: evilfantasy on May 12, 2008, 04:00:03 PM

Right, U3 apps and poratableapps apps are designed to work with U3 or poratableapps; they can't be used interchangeably between U3 and poratableapps.  However, both U3 and poratableapps have many free apps and, in some cases, they have the same free apps such as OpenOffice.org.I ought have explained that U3 does launch automatically in its own window.  I've been ignoring it.  I close the window, and use the folders I created.  What really annoys me about U3 is that you can't delete its default folders - it seems to recreate them.Doesn't it have just two default folders, Documents, and System? Like it's not enough, that with every new update iTunes, and QuickTime want to be in my startups (which I obviously deny), with the newest update, Safari wants to install as well.
I'm really sick of those kind of softwares.Oh, come on, Broni -- they're just leveraging their synergies to steer you toward the best customer end user revenue-driven experience!

(All right, I almost made it through that without laughing...)

I've been always curious what is the ratio:

I've been always curious what is the ratio:
"less savvy, paying less attention computer users, who'll click OK"

are those the kind that are installing something, and don't read squat really.. like this:

user: duh, me install new Apple/Microsoft program

installer: The Installsheild Wizard is preparing to install on your computer

user: duh, this fun *claps hands*

installer: The Installshield wizard will guide you through the setup of on your computer. To continue click next.

user: *jumps up excitedly* yay more mouse clickey!
*slowly guides mouse to next button*
*attempts to depress mouse button. misses, hits desk*
*tries again. and again. and Again. Finally succeeds after smacking forehead into mouse*

user: duh, my head hurt now.

installer:

Would you like Microsoft to sign you up for a free service that collects consumer data to find out which of the competitions products to block in the next service pack? This service may also slow your computer down as Microsoft uses it to reduce load on it's web server by storing as much archived FTP CONTENT as will fit on your drives.

[ ] No, I want to be a dickface and not help the great microsoft in it's quest for the greater good
[X] Yes, I want to help microsoft ELIMINATE it's competition while improving it's products only marginally yet charging unimaginable sums for upgrades from last years version. (recommended)

user: duh, OK.

installer: warning, a file, shell32.dll, is a newer version then that required for this software! would you like to unconditionally format your drive for no particular reason?

user: duh, OK

installer: warning, when formatting a drive, it is theoretically possible that you will lose all your saved data. It is recommended you use Microsoft backup to backup all your data onto a BILLION and a half floppy disks. Make sure to verify this backup set.

user: no want lose data.

installer: Setup is complete!

user: where am I?

OK sorry, that got a bit out of hand, but you gotta love the "theory" that formatting makes you lose all data lol.

hey wait a second, this thread is about apple- oh well. I'm feeling funny right now...There are plenty of users out there that aren't interested in computers as a vocation or avocation.  They simply want to be able to use their computers for the tasks at hand.  I think it is up to companies and programmers/developers to facilitate that, and perhaps not "hide" software and conditions of use.Well, that was a bit of an extreme example. Definitely far below an average PC user. but it wouldn't have been as funny with a average PC user darn it!No, it's not that it wasn't funny -- just got me to thinking.  The computer world is just like everything else when it comes to the consumer:  caveat emptor -- let the buyer beware.Alright- I didn't want you to think I was being elitist or anything. I really don't think anybody would start all their sentences with "duh", or talk to themselves for that matter.

I think microsoft should replace the "recommended" with "please?", and not make it the default. or even better, not make it the default. Whose idea was it to make the information sending type checkboxes checked by default? Same with the checkboxes at the end of installation for non-system type programs, "Load at start-up." I can see it for certain programs, but in most CASES it really should be the user's choice what is running on his machine, as well as when it runs on his machine.

PS: I read it again, and I'm quite surprised how funny it was. I am going to add it to my collection of goofy jokes. Same with your first statement Aegis- you haven't copyrighted it yet have you?

No, I'm just a silver-tongued devil...

Solve : The April bandwidth showdown?

Answer»

Thought it could be fun for the UPCOMING month of April to have a friendly showdown to see who transfers (download and upload) the most bandwidth in that month.

To log and keep track of your bandwidth we'll be using NetMeter, a utility I'd assume some of you already have installed on your computer. Additional information about this utility and a download for those who do not have it installed but wish to participate can be found on the below link.

http://www.metal-machine.de/readerror/

Once installed, right-clicking in the window or on the icon in the Systray will allow you to gain access to the Totals. Within the totals is where you'll be able to see how much data you've transfered for the day, week, and month.

Example output:
Quote

Date          Download        Upload
------------------------------------------------------
3/1/2008   185375912   11401825
3/2/2008   343077978   28885286
3/3/2008   368529917   35171878
3/4/2008   2455426117 112941577
3/5/2008   312785797   19126406

(205.19 MiB / 19.86 MiB)

At the end of April we'll declare a winner based off their results.

Sounds like a fun contest!

Would it be cheating to turn the cache file off for FireFox? That CH logo downloades as many times as I use the site in a day could really add up... (to about 1.98MB...)

I can only transfer 20GB a month without EXTRA charges (fiber is a very shared connection, so, downloading a whole bunch of stuff can slow it down for others.. and when you have hundreds of people doing that, it can become a problem, but, it usually never goes below 10MBPS)

Pretty tricky TURNING off your browsers cache. I don't think it would be cheating, although I think it would be more interesting to use your computer as you normally would and browsing with your cache turned off isn't too normal. Hmm... well, I will just leave cache on then.
(Probably wouldent do it in the first place for bandwidth considerations)

1.65GB transferred over the last three days so FAR.. Depending on the day I can get a few gigs in an hour.  This shall be interesting  .Dang! I just noticed this thread, and installed NetMeter. I'm waaaaaay behind.Wait, this is for the month of April, right?  Not March?Yes April.I installed NetMeter on 3/17 only, but I managed, so far U/D at 8.43GBMy computer gave me the BSOD again, and I lost the log..

That kind of sucks.

I hope it doesnt happen in April when the competition starts. Oh, I didn't notice, it's for April, so I'm OK.Dang I'm impressed BRONI with that much data transfer already. For the full month of March I'm at 495MB UL - 5.8GB DL - Total 6.32GiBhey wht about timezone!! people will get head start!

Solve : A Free Lunch?

Answer»

Back in 2005, Microsoft sent me an invite to attend their Ready to Launch festivities for Visual Studio 2005. It was in New York City, so for the price of a train ticket, not only did I get a free lunch but free copies of Visual Studio 2005, SQL Server 2005, and BizTalk 2006.

Earlier this year I received an invite to Microsoft's Heroes festivities. Today was the day! Not only did I get a free lunch, but free copies of Windows Vista Ultimate (SP1), Windows Server 2008, Visual Studio 2008 and SQL Server 2008.

Can't wait until Microsoft has their launch party for Windows 7....just love those free lunches. I guess I should've signed up for the one in Seattle. If I would have know that I would have tried to get a copy of vista just to try.I get invited to those things all the time, maybe I should start going, you know for the free lunch!!!I would have gone there to see how many members of CH I'd find there.Probably almost everyoneYou'd probably find very few. Launches are spread out over the whole country and the world and so are our members. And several of our regulars are still in high school or college. Whats that suppose to mean??? I think it's SUPPOSED to mean they aren't LIKELY to get invited.  They probably aren't on any Microsoft invitation list.  That's not surprising, is it?

Indeed, what I'd like to know is how does one get invited to one of these events?  Sidewinder, how does that happen?  How do you get RECOGNIZED by them so that they'll invite you to these functions?sign up in technet or msdn. I'm not sure if you have to pay for a subscription or if the free sign up will get you in the door. My technet subscription cost around $1200. Quote

Some years ago when Microsoft was pushing Passport Accounts I signed up. No money involved, just shows my name when I go on MSDN, plus you can get newsletters for whatever interests you. I suspect Microsoft uses the subscription lists for their newsletters to send out invites to interested parties.

I get invites to all sorts of stuff, but many are too inconvenient to travel. The product launches however are usually in major cities and my living only 25 miles from NYC makes it easy to get to. Sure beats buying retail.

The events themselves are fairly predictable. Many are in hotels (one earlier this year was in a movie theater!) where hundreds of people watch Microsoft demo the product. When you sign in for the day, they usually give you a COUPON to be redeemed for the swag after the demo is over. Some are half day, some are all day and did I mention the free lunch?

PS. Some of the swag has nothing to do with the product and is time limited or trial software. However the product that is LAUNCHING is usually the standard edition. Not a bad deal considering the cost of software.

Solve : ADrive- 50gb of online storage free?

Answer»

I discovered today adrive.com

Adrive.com OFFERS 50gb of free online storage and backup space. Sharing of files is also possible.

Maybe an alternative to rapidshare.com?Looks good. Thanks for the post.

http://www.adrive.com/Nice discovery! I've been using ADrive mostly for storage and sharing. The signup asks far too many questions. It wanted my name, address and telephone number. No sweat. I guess Plank Wood, who lives at 1 This Street, This Town, England AA1 9AA telephone 123456789 will be getting some prime junk mail and sales calls maybe. Also annoying is that even if you indicate your country is the United Kingdom, you still get bounced back with the error that you didn't specify a "STATE". I find that SO irritating.

HEY... WHO SAID YOU COULD USE MY NAME/ADDRESS!!!they ask you for information but they don't CALL you or EMAIL you or spam you. They just send you email if you ask them to send you your forgotten password.

But if you're paranoid, you can simply fake all the information except for your email (it has to be a working one you can check but it doesn't have to be your real email you are giving to your friends and family)I personally use www.folders.live.com (only 5GB) as well as my server, which is sitting behind me.
The only problem with Live Folders is that you are limited to how much you can upload at once, but, you can publicaly share.

The only problem with using my server is that it goes offline randomly without control... Anyone notice that ADrive is about to release v1.0.  They say they'll have SSL encryption, WEBDAV, a backup client and more storage plans.  Of COURSE, we'll have to pay for those features.

Solve : Importance Of Work Station Setup?

Answer»

Workstation a place where most of us spend half of the day.It is seen that everyday we spend our time sitting on computer, sending and receiving mails, recieving calls and faxes. Most of us face a general problem when we return home regarding back pain, debilitating neck and shoulder pain. This is the result of poorly DESIGNED work station. Many of us dosen't pay any heed towards designing work station in proper way. After a certain period of time we face such problems regarding health.

Here are some tips that should be kept in mind while designing our workstation-

*PERFECT CHAIR:- No such thing exist as chairs are not made keeping in mind the structure of the employee the one who is gonna sit on it.We spent all our time sitting on chair and doing our work so our chair must be perfect atleast we can adjust it according to our comfort.Thios will make our chair Perfect in our aspect.Alyaws swivelling chair that swivel at 360 degree so that we would not have to strech our backeverytime to reach the things.

*TABLE OR DESK:-Table and desk on which our keyboard is kept should be in the level of our arms maintaing an angle of 90 degree to our elbow.Having such a desk arrangement will keep our sight straight and monitor will in a linear fashion to eyes. This will help to reduce the cervical pressure.

*TELEPHONE:- If you are on the PHONE frequently, the best thing that you can do is to attach it to handsfree to reduce your movement and stress as well as it will avoid disturbance at the working time. Many of us cradle on the phone  receiver between
our ear and shoulder. This causes increased muscle tension  and often leads to severe neck pain. A headset will free your hands.

*OTHER:-If you are sitting in a chair that swivels, use your feet to rotate your body rather than twisting it. Twisting spine may lead to increased stress throughout the back and shoulders. If  working on a FAX machine, keyboard, etc., try to position the equipment in a linear fashion. Finally, continuous sitting in one position, stand up in between for the blood flowing through your neck, back & legs.Try to walk a BIT.This will relieve tension from your system reducing overall stress. Those are good tips.  One also needs to be aware of individual needs.  (For example, I PREFER my monitor sightly higher than eye level so I'm looking up just a bit at it. )

If  a person is going to spend a lot of time on the phone, I strongly recommend a headset.

Solve : Recovering files off a bad hard drive?

Answer»

so i have this hard drive(western digital caviar 205aa) which i've had for years, in a static-free BAG. it went bad, and i wasn't able to recover my images and mp3 files(which i can't find anymore, so save the "download them again" comments  ). anyhow, i've tried all KINDS of recovery software, and the hard drive doesn't show up on any list. it does power on, as i can hear it when it's plugged in.

i recently discovered a new software that can recover files physically from bad hard drives. it's called SpinRite(http://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm). just gotta figure out how to use it properly. i'm supposed to boot from the cd image, but it just won't. when i plug in the old hard drive into my 2nd cd-rom IDE cable(because the old HD won't fit on the new hard drive IDE cable, the cable's too small), the computer takes awhile to boot up, and eventually just boots from the good, new hard drive into XP. however, the old, bad hard drive doesn't show up in windows explorer, or any of the recovery software i use.

so what would you guys recommend? i've heard of the freezer trick, i put the old hd in the deep freezer til it was nice and old, and still, no luck. i think i have may heard it click on one time, but who knows. it still powers on, that's for sure. so for the freezer trick, do you keep it in the DEEP or regular freezer, and how long? does the bag have to be sealed? what else can i do to try and recover the files off this hard drive? thanks, any help is greatly appreciateTry this...

Burn to cd and boot to it with the defective harddrive connected.  If that doesn't work then other than sending to a data recovery outfit (mondo $) it sounds like it's over for that drive.

Alan <><  Is the BIOS even seeing the hard drive? If it's not, no OS or program is going to see it either.

Sounds to me like that drive, and what ever was on it, is gone for good.

As for the freezer trick... well, eh, that only works for certain situations. It has to do with the expanding and contracting from CHANGING temperatures which might free up something that is jammed. That won't work if, for instance, the controller card on the hard drive is fried or the drive is otherwise physically BROKEN, which I think is most likely the case here since nothing is seeing the drive.you could also try www.e-fense.com/helix... it's a linux distro that specializes in data recovery. It's also got a windows executable that may help discover the drive in windows. The linux side isn't very user-friendly, however. Quote from: quaxo on May 01, 2008, 10:19:24 AM

it should be on master, right? because it's hooked up to cd-rom IDE cable like i said, it won't fit on the IDE cable for the hard drives, the cables too small on the working hard drive. Quote from: Cobra on May 03, 2008, 02:26:02 PM

Too small??? all ide cables are the same size....... Are you sure you're plugging the hdd into the right cable? Also, the jumpers should only be set to master if the drive is plugged into the last connector on the ide cable. If it's on the second plug, it should be slave.Where you would find it in the BIOS would depend on what motherboard and BIOS you have. Boot Devices just shows what order they boot in, not necessarily what's available. For example, mine shows floppy disk as an option, even though my system doesn't have a floppy drive.

I don't know what BIOS you've got, but it can usually be found in the first two menus somewhere (under IDE devices or something similar).

Solve : javascript/corrupt files?

You can't download the below link?

http://javadl.sun.com/webapps/download/AutoDL?BundleId=18713I downloaded the link.  An icon appears on my desktop and details are listed in the column on the left.  I clicked run.  A box came preparing to install. A box came up Windows Installer---Error applying transformers.  Verify that the specified transfer path is valid.  I clicked OK.  Nothing seems to happen.Hmm. This is a strange one. Did you try running the file from Safe Mode?In safe mode, I have 2 icons.  1 is administrator and the other is Admin only (password needed)

The above file would not run in either one.

I did a search in both and have 25,000+ files.
3 sounded like what we have been talking about.
Java -  Says the installer cannot proceed with the current internet settings

jre-6u5-windows-i568  ETC. - says the same as above

jre-6i5-windows   ps -   says preparing to install  Then it says the system administrator has set policies to prevent this installationVery strange. It sounds as if you're clicking on the correct file: jre-6u5-windows-i586-p-s.exe but I don't know why it'd be GIVING you this error. You should only be ENCOUNTERING this error: (installer cannot proceed with the current internet settings) if the file you're running is not the offline file. The file mentioned above is the offline version and should be able to install without Internet connection.

You do have administrative rights on this computer right, it's not a work computer or home computer you don't have rights to?

If you have full rights, I'm still thinking that it has to be SOMETHING with the installation. Try running the Windows Installer Clean Up utility. Once this is installed run the utility and remove any Java and JS2E Runtime listed. Once done try running again.

Hope this works because I'm running out of ideas. If any of the other forum members have suggestions feel free to make them. Thanks I'll try the clean up utility.  Yes, this is my home computer and NOT a work computer.
As far as FULL administrative rights, please explain the meaning of FULL RIGHTS.  I have the password but that's it.
I'm not too know ledgable on this.  As I said, my ex-boyfriend ordered the computer and set everything up for me.  He's quite good at computers since it is his field.
After we split, we still communicated.  When he started referring to stuff that I had written on my computer, I got suspicious.  I did some checking and found out that he could get into my computer because he knew the password to the administrator account.  So, I changed the password but that's all I did. Can he still have access??  Put nothing past him, he's sharp.
Let me know about FULL admin. rights and I'll get back after the clean up.

Thanks for allI just did the clean up.
Here's what came up
Windows Script Host

Line 10
Char5
Error: permission denied
Code:800A0046
Source microsoft VB Script runtime error

I did it in my regular account and not Administrator.  Would it make difference to use administrator??Yes. Try under the Administrator account. Also when installing Java I'd suggest installing it under that account as well.I installed the clean up in administrator and ran it.

Then I searched for Java and J528
J528 came up nothing
Java came up 23 files of various names
3 are just plain java
1 is Java 01
1 is java.exe-26304ebe.pf

I assume I get rid of the 3 java and java 01
Right??
How do I do so.
In control panel add/remove programs they do not show up
How do I remove these??To delete in the Windows Installer Clean Up, highlight each item that has Java and click the Remove button. Here goes again.  I'm lost.  If I go to all programs, and click on windows installer it comes up that it does not fit with the parameters. So I click on the search function and type in the windows installer cleanup.  It comes up and I click on it to open it. The box for windows installer with the warning directions comes up with NO programs in it.  I tried to type in Java but it doesn't work.
Now what.  Please remember I need baby steps!!  ThanksIt's very strange that not programs would open. Are you sure you're logged into an account (e.g. administrator) that has full rights to the computer. When opening the program it should look something like the below example picture. you should also be able to find the program under the Start / Programs menu.

[recovering space - attachment deleted by admin]Please explain what you mean by FULL rights

It IS my HOME computer not work

I have the password to administrator

However, as I explained earlier, my ex-boyfriend set up this computer.  He HAD the password to administrator but I changed it.

There are 2 icons on the SAFE MODE.  1 is administrator and the other is ADMIN. Administrator needs the password.  ADMIN does not.

Does this mean I do not have FULL rights ??
Could someone else be accessing my computer?
Having full rights simply means that you're logged into an account that can do anything on the computer and is not restricted by permissions that may prevent him or her to not do something. I really don't think someone else is accessing your computer. It's likely your computer is simply setup with multiple accounts like you said earlier. However, it is possible that all your issues you've been having are related to not having administrator rights. Try the below steps.

Right-click (not the normal left-click) the Start button.

This should open a menu with options like Search, Open, Explore, etc. Do you have Open All Users and/or Explore All Users?I have:
Open
Explore
Search
Scan with AVG free
Properties

It does Not say ALL Users behind any of these

Solve : Televison: CRT vs. LCD vs. Plasma?

My mom's television is at LEAST thirty years old.  It is finally SHOWING signs that it may not want to stick around for the digital conversion in 2009.  (She's a cable subscriber, so the conversion is not an issue for her.)

I'm trying to get her to go with an LCD flatscreen.  She is convinced it won't last NEARLY as long as a cathode RAY tube television.  I've tried to tell her that both LCD and plasma are greatly improved in the last few years.

Any recommendations, thoughts, and your experiences are greatly appreciated.

Thanks!I just heard the other day that LCDs don't last as long as CRTs, too. I heard they only last 5-6 years.... Google here I come.here's an interesting read Not a bad article here.

Solve : Online Purchases - iSofter software?

Answer»

A few weeks ago, I purchased a video converter software online.

It was purchased through DVD-iPod.biz/RegNow Inc.

The software is from iSofter.

For a couple of weeks now, I’ve been requesting a refund from iSofter since the software does not work well.  However, even though I’ve sent countless numbers of email messages to request a refund, there hasn’t been any response.

I also emailed DVD-iPod.biz, but they kept telling me to contact iSofter.

Has anyone ever had a similar experience?  Any RECOMMENDATIONS appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

do they have a phone number? emails are extremely impersonal and very easy to ignore. No Phone #....email correspondence only.     yep, it's like PATIO said, correspondence by email only.  they have no address or anything.  i don't even know which country they're OPERATING from.    Sorry if this works out bad for you madam....in future maybe posting a question here for Programs or Utilities you are looking to purchase might be a good idea.
With so many Members with a variety of interests hopefully we can provide some good advice and prevent this happening in the future.
Best of Luck.

Here  is a list for example of some Free converting software that may suit your needs.
But always read the fine print as alot of software listed as Freeware isn't always Free...
Nature of the Beast i guess.i've always been terrified of buying from unknown vendors over the internet, but the third party involved in the transaction kept telling me that they had a 30-day money back guarantee policy.  i suppose they were nothing but mere lies...anyway, thank you.  Hi,
I think I had a somewhat similar problem. I downloaded a free trial basis music converter from Regnow.com. It worked wonderfully but was only a 30 day trial version. I was out of town for a while and when I got back my 30 days were over. I wanted to purchase the converter but couldn't register it from my desktop application. So I went back to their website and BY MISTAKE purchased the wrong converter. I called them up and asked if I could put my money into the music converter I really wanted and have them "uninstall" the wrongly purchased converter. They said I had to purchase the one I wanted as well and then email for a refund on the wronly purchased converter. It took several phone calls and emails but I just (3 months later) got a credit on my credit CARD. Here is that phone number : (877)353-7297.

Hope it helps!
