Meaning, things ARENT being DETECTED when you put your Windows XP CD in to reinstall it, or, its not being detected when you start XP?

My computer wont let me install virus protection by cd or by download if I download it will tell me that the server was reset and I am not connected to the internet when I know that I am connected. If I try by cd My computer doesn't recognize that there is a cd in the drive and I know there is nothing WRONG with the cd because I tried it on another computer. If I try to download something like WINDOWS live ONE care it will take hours and then after WAITING it will say set up can not complete not a valid windows 32 application. I cant use windows update or download virus protection. I tried reinstalling windows xp again and again and this did not help a dell tech came and instaled a new modem but that didnot help. So I pretty much can't get on line because I can't install protection. I can't use some of my cds because the computer doesn't see them. Can anyone help please.

I have a question to ask anybody that can help. Question is i dont know alot about computers and was messsing around with my new dell inspiron 530s/531s desktop i got today and  CHANGED the resolution to 1280 x 1024 and now it wont load WINDOWS vsita or do anything at all. All it does is bring up a black screen with a box in the middle of the page that SAYS INFORMATION OUT OF RANGE RESOLUTION 1280X1024.

Hi, I have several CD's created about 10 years ago, mostly old family pictures. My CD Rom cannot read these files. It shows"There is not disk in this drive". I've had a wireless mouse for years with no problems.  It's outlasted a couple of computers.  It's a logitech, maybe I just picked a good brand.  The only problem I have had is keeping fresh batteries on hand.

I use Gmail for work and corresponding with family, etc. but I also have a Hotmail address that I use for online purposes, forums, games, etc.  I was wondering if anyone knows of some sort of e-mail notification program that will tell me when I have new mail in my Hotmail account.  Gmail offers a "Gmail Notifier", a small .exe program that I have set to START up with my computer and RUN in the taskbar at the bottom right CORNER of the screen.  It changes colors when new mail is received, short and sweet.  Is there anything like this for Hotmail, either officially produced or from the community?  I searched through a few websites, and they were either gimmicky websites shoving advertisements down my throat, or the programs were browser-based.  I use Firefox, but what I really want is something that checks e-mail without needing a browser open.

I stumbled across this website and i am hoping you can help. I have an ACER Aspire 5610Z, bought it a few yrs back and only in the past month or two has it been crashing after watching movies under Media Center or being on the internet for a few hours.

I consider myself to be PRETTY cautious; I run my *censored* clean up, computer scans, antivirus, etc on a weekly {sometimes every 2 DAYS}, depending on usage. I always delete my cookies and temp files but I do use the heck out of it.

I dont know what could be causing the problem. I went to the microsoft website since i have vista {i thought there was yet another issue with that} but i BELIEVE {im not fluent in computer lingo} I am up to date and all updated with patches, etc.

But...is my laptop worthless {please say no!!!!!}  or is there hope??? I would really appreciate any help / advise you could provide....

There are a number of ways you could use to figure out good UK hosting providers and one of them is to check how many sites they host. Though this is hardly the perfect approach I use it and it helped me in making my decisions.

And what do you dislike are LIKE about the newer are older versions. that the other one did are didn't have.You'll most likely get several responses to the effect that there have been umpty-nine other polls on this subject, so other than this sentence I won't mention that fact.  Please use the search function in future though, to save unnecessary redundant polls.  Also, usually the monthly polls are conducted by the site admin, and the current one each month will be found stickied at the top of this board.  A name that describes the actual poll would have been a better choice for your subject.

I'm using a variety of OSes on different machines.
My main rig has XP X64 Edition on it.  There are hundreds of little things I'd like to change about it, but I think that's true of everyone.  I'm happy with it.
As for your second question - what do I like/dislike about newer/older versions, that's a long story, but here's a short version.
Windows 95 and 98 don't support much of my hardware and I've found them fairly unstable.  Windows NT 4 is a great OS IMHO, but again it doesn't support most of my hardware.  Windows 2000 is also a great OS, however I've found that on a machine with adequate MEMORY it's actually slower than XP.  XP is fine, and I would use that but for the fact that I've discovered two better OSes.  Windows Server 2003, I've found that's faster than XP on the same hardware (at least for me) and is also based on a newer kernel so is more stable.  Disadvantage is that some software won't run on it.  Windows XP X64 edition is based on Server 2003 but is 64 bit.  COMPARED to XP it's faster for me, compared to Server 2003 it runs more software.  Vista I haven't had much experience with, ditto Windows 7, Mac OS, and Linux.
I still use, on a fairly regular basis, NT4, 98SE, 2000, XP and Server 2003, it's just that for my main machine XP X64 ticks the most boxes.yeah sorry about the repost i now  see this was the topic for the month of june but that poll made no sence windows nt was the highest and then 95 they both took up 50 percent I have windows xp xp proffesional i previously had 95 and 98 then windows xp proffesional i can't think of any i don't like

I guess I'll put up with this for just this month and next month I can switch back to my old ISP. I will use this connection only while I'm traveling for my lap top .  Isn't that a good Idea?

I am having a hard time downloading this .... I get a pop up that says :

Installation is corrupt! (16236.203.235)

What does that mean? I flashplayer installed and then one day I log on and it is gone?! My IT GUY at WORK tried reinstalling java and IE. ??It still is not helping?? He said he has to "do some research" and will try and find a solution, but I figured maybe I could get some help on here.

ah I had a feeling that if you didnt that you probably wouldnt be able to notice its there.

Cannot get my HP 4380 to scan to computer.  Yes, all connections are MADE and hp is turned on.  I press scan to PC and it says it is scanning, then posp up with this " Scan Error. Try scan from computer or see DOCUMENTATION."  I'm puzzled!!!

Try looking at the documentation? Or checking hp's website. You MIGHT need new DRIVERS.

Does my computer get damaged if I have to hard shut down. Meaning holding the power BUTTON for about 5 seconds till it shuts down?
The computer won't get damaged but CERTAIN programs may not shut down properly. I did not SEE an answer to this SPECIFIC question and not sure if it is in a good spot or not but here it goes. I am in the market for a new laptop as mine is falling apart. I have a new 27" computer monitor and a Verizon "box" to hook up to a TV to watch. I would like to hook up the monitor so I can watch TV (through the laptop if needed and through the box?) on it as well as hook up the laptop when at home to use as a monitor. Is there a laptop feature that can do this with or do I need a special tuner or other hardware to be able to do what I want? The guy at the computer store had no clue. okay when I'm in the lab down in my college I can get on an watch EPISODES of shows with out much of an issue.  When I try to watch them on my laptop there is ad's threw out it, I'm useing ie 7 an there's mite be 6 from what I can tell.  Is there a setting to turn that off or anything?  I dont mind them being before or after just in the show.well thats one of the many *features* thrown with youtube.

  YES, it's safe to watch videos on youtube. I've been download videos for about one month with no problems. Download the VIDEO and then convert it to something you can use.
