I'd never heard of him because he was last online about 1 day after I joined.Somebody deleted a lot of his crappola.  i noticed a couple things were missing...I have also noticed quite a few more people online.

I must SAY, I am very glad of this.

Nathan, did you take a look into that modification I was telling you about that lets GUESTS post by typing in obscufated letters/numbers so they dont have to register?
I think it would be USEFUL, but it would defer some users from registering. Quote

I SUSPECT that most of those with multiple aliases are compensating for undersized genitalia.

Really? I sometimes use an alias with no mod privileges. That way I can see if the methods we use to only allow Mods to do certain things work with my own eyes. It's paranoia, but it's not hurting anything. so its got nothing to do with the genitilia situation huh? Right. Quote

Having more than one username if you are an administrator, web developer, or a moderator, can be a good thing just so you can see the forum as it is to a regular user. For example, on my website which seems to be 50/50 abandoned, I have more than one username so I can test FEATURES as a regular user, since I have had problems with the way its displayed before.... MIT-Trained Rocket Scientist Develops Comfortable HIGH Heels

Thursday , February 08, 2007

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —
A FIRM is claiming a footwear breakthrough — comfortable high heels.

And it only took an MIT-trained rocket scientist to get that done.

The so-called Insolia technology, developed by a team of researchers including Brian Hughes, a rocket scientist with a degree from MIT, shifts the body's weight off the ball of the foot by changing the inside of the shoe.

The Salem, N.H., company HBN Shore LLC is now SELLING weight shifting inserts in CVS stores.

The company says it reduces forefoot and toe pressures and improves ankle stability.

Hughes is also a podiatrist.

I own a website, manage another website, (and another website after that), and CREATE various programs in my spare TIME. Most of these things, I mark with (C) 2007 (and then the media name)

Questions about this:
1) Does this OFFICIALLY declare me (or the company) owning the media since it has this copyright?
2) What would happen if someone were to take this information? Would legal actions force them to retract any violations they make?
3) What good does registering a copyright do? (Not a patent)Zylstra555......  Do a bit of reading...... it's all spelled out here.

This is why I love paying taxes !!!
I am sure people in Canada appreciate this most wise use of their hard tax paying monies!  Ahhh,  the liberal arts*

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Chimpanzees may have been using stone "hammers" as long as 4,300 years ago, an international research team, led by archaeologist Julio Mercader of the University of Calgary, Canada, SAID Monday.

The researchers uncovered the hammers, in the West African country Ivory Coast. It would be the earliest known use of tools by chimpanzees.

The hammers were used to crack nuts, a behavior still seen in chimps in that area, the researchers said in a paper in the online edition of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The finding may indicate that a "chimpanzee stone age" began in ancient times, the researchers say.

The earliest reports of stone tool use by chimpanzees in this area date to the WRITINGS of Portuguese explorers in the 1600s.

The stones were about the size of cantaloupes with patterns of wear indicating use to crack nuts. The rocks would have been too large for human hands, but about right for the larger, stronger hands of chimpanzees, the researchers said.

"It's not clear whether we hominins invented this kind of stone technology, or whether both humans and the great apes inherited it from a common forebear," Mercader said in a statement.

But, he added, there were not any farmers living in this region 4,300 years ago, so it is unlikely chimpanzees picked it up by imitating villagers.

Others are not so sure.

The tools may predate farming in the area but not necessarily human contact, said anthropologist Stanley H. Ambrose of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. There were early human hunter-gatherers in the region at the time, he said.

If chimps and early humans shared this technology with a common ancestor between 5 million and 7 million years ago, there should be sites with chimp debris going back 5 million years and the earliest human stone tool sites should show the kinds of debris found at the chimp sites, Ambrose said: "They absolutely do not."

Some of the hammers also had starch residue on them, mostly from types of nuts that are still eaten by chimpanzees, but not humans. Some of the starch was also associated with tubers but the researchers interpreted that as "background noise" probably picked up in the ground.

Skeptical of the starch findings was anthropologist Jeanne Sept, DEAN of faculties at Indiana University.

"Their interpretations of the starch grains recovered from the specimens are incomplete, and somewhat circular," she said. "For example, they do not describe which surfaces of the rock fragments the starch grains were obtained from, which makes it difficult to judge whether the grains were left on the tools as a result of tool-use, or if the grains merely naturally stuck to the stones after they became buried in the soil."

"They assert that starch grains from nuts were behaviorally significant, while they decide that starch grains identified as yam roots are 'background noise' but give no justification for that," she added. "They may in fact be dismissing or ignoring evidence that does not match their chimp-nut interpretation of the site."

"It may be premature to ACCEPT the range of their claims until further evidence is presented," Sept concluded.

Mercader's research was funded primarily by the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, Leipzig, Germany; Canada Research Chairs program, Canada Foundation for Innovation and the University of Calgary.  ( Isn't this great to Know, I ALWAYS wondered when they picked up the  tools!    )

Solve : RAM and internet surfing speed?

That tweaktest is a good one, I agree.
That also helped me improve my connection speed.I´m glad for give back the favour made me one USA friend nine YEARS ago...

I always thought you the native english speakers have a super great advantage in computers because, almost all of the computer and software technical information is in english. All our books in spanish are practically translated copies of IT ENGINEERS books.
Many times the translations are not good, because, for example, the translation is in spanish from Chile, or Argentina, or México, and this kinds of spanish is not the same as our spanish from Spain.

I can´t difference between USA technical english books or GB technical english books or, even, australian technical english books, if the technical words are the same, the expressions, and all that...

All manners, I think my own english expressions are not the same as yours, but... think I´m not a native english speaker.

In spite of, I must give a lot of thanks to all those USA and spanish engineers, technicians, and all the people who has spent his time in putting a piece or all his technical knowledge to the rest of the world by this big NET.

My connection speed is 6 KB/second (I use cable LAN)
RAM is 128 MB

People seem to be confusing two issues here.

Extra RAM will not increase the rate at which a webpage downloads. But more RAM can be helpful in increasing the speed at which your computer processes the webpage and display it to you. It sounds like you are asking because you are considering a computer upgrade? In that case please tell us your specs. For a simple home computer, at least 256MB should be sufficent for surfing the web.

Hi Neil,

Yes I was looking for an upgrade for 2 reasons:-

1) I want to create some videos

2) Getting a faster connection

Thanks Everybody for the advice.

I guessed you weren't a native English speaker, but you are pretty good.
I only picked up on it because of a few phrases etc, your English is a lot better than many native English speakers, believe me.
I can see where you're coming from in relation to the IT books being translated, often the translations aren't properly checked and the result isn't what it was MEANT to be.
Again, we're wandering from the topic . . . never mind.
Edit: That was Harlequin, didn't see your reply there Shouvik.Hi, if you have a W98 OS, try to download EasyMTU in: http://www.rob.cybercomm.nl/easymtu/

I think it´s so easy to use and ideal for your 6Kb/s connection and your OS.

HARLEQUIN.One question shouvik, are you sure your connection is 6KB/s and not 6Mb/s, 6KB/s would be 48Kb/s and that would be the relative speed of a dial-up connection, as you were saying you have cable (LAN)? You would think cable tends to be faster than dial-up.

Solve : What´s happening with www.rense.com??

Answer»

Hi everybody!

I usually SEE the www.rense.com WEB, but from three days ago I can´t go into this web.

I don´t KNOW what is happening, if the web is banned, closed or what...

Please, could anyone of you try to surf to this web page and say me if it´s possible?

If not is possible, could anyone tell me what was happened with this web?

Thanks a lot.Tried the page and it was inaccessible. Unfortunately not FAMILIAR with the page so couldn't tell you why it's down and/or when or if it will be back up.Thanks very much for your superfast response.

I think it´s possible the web could have been banned...

Look at this and see who is Jeff Rense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Rense

Greetings from Spain.Site's down for me too.
It's possible it's just gone down for maintenance or they're having problems.
Try again in a day or so.Thanks a lot to everybody. I´ll try the next WEEK days.

I think is the same happened with CNN Text. I saw it every day here in Spain, World News pages, till one day, my TV teletext showed:

"This service is no longer available, Pease visit www.CNN.com/international"

And this web pages are not the same that CNNText, they are a practical joke...

Greetings from a spanish web surfer. Please if somebody hears something about www.rense.com or Jeff Rense, tell me.
Causes of a website down:
Problem with website hosting
Problem with DNS/Domain
Problem with the server
Problem with the page language programming (but then again, that would return as 404 or another error)

Most likely: Server and Webhosting

It will probably be back up as soon as the webmaster notices, and gets it sorted out, which should be under 1 week in most casesThanks to all of you. www.rense.com is accesible now.
I was very worried after three days without can go in this web.

HARLEQUIN.I hope you rely on other sources of information other than his site.
The trick consists of being a information miner.

The important of that web pages it is to interrelate the information obtained and crossing it with other informations to obtain an objective approach to the truth.

This is not easy to explain for me, but I have tried to explain the general idea with words.

To Add Speed, Chipmakers TUNE Structure
IBM, Intel, and AMD are finding ways around the physical problems that have hampered their efforts to make chips faste

To understand the quest to build ever faster and more powerful computers, it's helpful to understand the problems that hold them back from getting faster in the first place.

While chips themselves are getting faster all the time, faster is a relative term. Even though chipmakers like Intel (INTC) and IBM (IBM) are building more powerful chips every 12 to 18 months, other chips that go inside a computer haven't historically KEPT up in the performance race. If you think of a microprocessor as a fast-talking, fast-moving dynamo that never takes long to get anything done, then a dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip is a bit more of a loafer, forcing the processor to wait for it before it can get on with the task at hand. Worse, between them lies a narrow hallway that tends to get crowded EASILY, and when it does, work piles up.

If it all sounds a little like a discarded plot for a Dilbert cartoon, you're not very far from the truth. The solution could come STRAIGHT from the playbook of the pointy-headed manager, but with one key difference: It works brilliantly. The solution is to first make the slowpoke move a lot faster, but then to put them both in the same office so they can work more closely together with nothing to get in the way.
Combo Chips

That's a simple way to describe the disclosure of a new approach to computer chip design unveiled by IBM on Feb. 14 at the International Solid State Circuits Conference, a chip technology event in San Jose, Calif. IBM calls the approach eDRAM—the "e" stands for "embedded"—and says that combining the two types of chip onto a single piece of silicon will substantially improve processor performance. IBM plans to integrate this technique into its chips beginning in 2008.

By embedding DRAM DIRECTLY onto the processor, IBM will be able to eliminate another type of memory that's usually embedded onto a processor called SRAM, or static random access memory, which is typically faster than DRAM, and acts as a go-between between the DRAM and the processor. However, SRAM takes up a lot of space on a processor, and with chips getting smaller all the time, the change frees up a lot of valuable space.

Solve : Clean vs Ruin due to Temp?

Answer»

Just a note that is common sense but my mistake shows how EASILY it can be overlooked. I started formatting and adding windows to a new drive and it came time to load up Office XP Pro. Trouble was that when I found my CD it was clear on one side but other 1/2 was so dirty I knew it was no way it would load. So, planning on cleaning it, I remember my CD cleaner is in my truck console after last use. I go outside to get it and think... "Brrrr.... it done got cold out here", but grab the cleaner and come back inside. When I came home earlier it was 65 deg, many hours later TV says it's now 28 deg, that explained that, lol. But Goof..... I then cleaned the CD several times and tried to install... it wouldnt. I cleaned again, it still wouldnt. I then finally looked closly at back of cd and discovered that while originally only 1/2 was dirty, now... the whole CD was scratched badly. It dawned on me... the gentle foam layer that normally cleans your CD by more or less sucking up the particles into it was acting in the reverse effect, at below freezing the foam is Much stiffer than normal. Instead of allowing the dirt to push up into the foam, the foam was not giving and FORCING the dirt to circulate around/on top of the CD, thereby scratching it badly. Granted that even if I had waited 4 hours or microwaved the cleaner, I could have still had a bad disc but 1/2 of disc was perfect before cleaning while after whole disc looked much cleaner but also like Krueger's kitty kat had gotten a hold of prob only 1 per mil folks actually would ever clean their cd's by an apparatus thats frozen but just wanted to warn against.I'll keep that in mind.

Did you get a ID-10-T error? If you contact Microsoft they may send you a replacement CD with a story like that.  I woulda thought very fishy myself if had read it, but unfortunatly, it really happened. Messages.. The only one that keeps haunting me is the one that said " You Dumb A$$". As for contacting Microsoft... I KINDA agree, it would be an interesting thing to see if they would replace the CD, but in reality, I know it would TAKE 4-ever and I do have it on another hard drive, if I can find... its in a cabinet somewhere.. kitchen or bathroom?.. or did I go theft proof and hide inside one of my AC ducts? Hmmm, lol Quote

Samuelson: The Dirty Secret About Global Warming
From politicians to the corporate world, everyone's talking about saving the planet from disastrous climate change. But for now, it's just talk.
By Robert J. Samuelson
Updated: 11:40 a.m. ET Feb 7, 2007

Feb. 7, 2007 - You could be excused for thinking that we'll soon do something serious about global warming. Last Friday, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—an international group of scientists—concluded that, to a 90 percent probability, human activity is warming the Earth. Earlier, Democratic congressional leaders made global warming legislation a top priority; and 10 big U.S. companies (including General Electric and DuPont) endorsed federal regulation. Strong action seems at hand.

Don't be fooled. The dirty secret about global warming is this: We have no solution. About 80 percent of the world's energy comes from fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas), the main sources of man-made greenhouse gases. Energy use sustains economic growth, which—in all modern societies—buttresses political and social stability. Until we can replace fossil fuels or find practical ways to capture their emissions, governments will not sanction the deep energy cuts that would truly affect global warming.

Considering this reality, you should treat the pious exhortations to "do something" with skepticism, disbelief or contempt. These pronouncements are (take your pick) naive, self-interested, misinformed, stupid or dishonest. Politicians mainly want to be seen as reducing global warming. Companies want to polish their images and exploit markets created by new environmental regulations. As for editorialists and pundits, there's no explanation except superficiality or herd behavior.

Anyone who honestly examines global energy trends must reach these harsh conclusions. In 2004, world emissions of CARBON DIOXIDE (CO2, the main greenhouse gas) totaled 26 billion metric tons. Under plausible economic and population assumptions, CO2emissions will grow to 40 billion tons by 2030, projects the International Energy Agency. About three-quarters of the increase is forecast to come from developing countries, two-fifths from China alone. The IEA expects China to pass the United States as the largest source of carbon dioxide by 2009.

Poor countries won't sacrifice economic growth—lowering poverty, fostering political stability—to placate the rich world's global warming fears. Why should they? On a per-person basis, their carbon dioxide emissions are only about one-fifth the level of rich countries. In Africa, less than 40 percent of the population even has electricity.

Nor will existing technologies, aggressively deployed, rescue us. The IEA studied an "alternative scenario" that simulated the effect of 1,400 policies to reduce fossil fuel use. Fuel economy for new U.S. vehicles was assumed to increase 30 percent by 2030; the global share of energy from "renewables" (solar, wind, hydropower, biomass) would quadruple, to 8 percent. The result: by 2030, annual carbon dioxide emissions would rise 31 percent instead of 55 percent. The concentration levels of emissions in the atmosphere (which presumably cause warming) would rise.

Since 1850, global temperatures have increased almost 1 DEGREE Celsius. Sea level has risen about seven inches, though the connection is unclear. So far, , global warming has been a change not a calamity. The IPCC projects wide ranges for the next century: temperature increases from 1.1 degrees Celsius to 6.4 degrees; sea level rises from seven inches to almost two feet. People might easily adapt; or there might be costly disruptions (say, frequent flooding of coastal cities resulting from melting polar ice caps).

I do not say we should do nothing, but we should not delude ourselves. In the United States, the favored remedy is "cap and trade." It's environmental grandstanding—politicians pretending they're doing something.

Companies would receive or buy quotas ("caps") to emit carbon dioxide. To exceed the limits, they'd acquire some other company's unused quotas ("trade"). How simple. Just order companies to cut emissions. Businesses absorb all the costs.

But in practice, no plausible "cap and trade" program would significantly curb global warming. To do that, quotas would have to be set so low as to shut down the economy. Or the cost of scarce quotas would skyrocket and be passed along to consumers through much higher energy prices. Neither outcome seems likely. Quotas would be lax. The program would be a regulatory burden with little benefit. It would also be a bonanza for lobbyists, lawyers and consultants, as industries and localities besieged Washington for exceptions and special treatment. Hello, influence-peddling and sleaze.

What we really need is a more urgent program of research and development, focusing on nuclear power, electric batteries, alternative fuels and the capture of carbon dioxide. Naturally, there's no guarantee that socially acceptable and cost-competitive technologies will result. But without them, global warming is more or less on automatic pilot. Only new technologies would enable countries—rich and poor—to reconcile the immediate imperative of economic growth with the potential hazards of climate change.

URL: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/170I thought that they determined that Global Warming was just caused naturaly, and that through time, it has gone up and down...

Rendering the image that our complaints and efforts about it useless...'Dis be true.

It's actually a matter of opinion, but I think "global warming" is part of a natural cycle, and here's why:

In the mid 1800's, when the pioneers moved to the WEST U.S. (or what is that region now), rivers were known to freeze in winter. This is because then, we were experiencing a mini Ice Age. That period is now over, so naturally, it's warming up a bit. The fact that we entered an Industrial Age about the same time probably contributed, but we really can't possibly be responsible for more than 5% of it.
I don't know if anyone else has watched this movie but I saw the movie: The Inconvenient truth which has Al Gore in it. It's an excellent movie, and it sort of opens your eyes more on Global Warming if you don't know much about it.
As long as you REALIZE it has it's own bias. Al Gore uses a private jet to get to his engagements, so he must not believe all of it (or it really doesn't matter to him).

But, you should really be looking at Outlook or some other email client to handle such a high volume of mail.  Outlook is not free.  You might also look at Thunderbird, which is free.  I have not used it but I've seen numerous favorable comments about it.  Still, I'm not sure it's designed for this volume of mail, either.  Outlook might be your best bet.

Solve : Not on the internet?

I work at a small company that does not have an internet connection.  They also do not WANT an internet connection.  We recently purchased a second computer and installed a small, two computer office NETWORK.  Microsoft SECURITY Shield persists in trying to find an internet connection.  Our other business software does the same.  What settings will tell our computers and network that we don't have an internet connection and to stop trying to locate one?  It is annoying to be stopped at every turn with having to close or ignore these messages.

Thanks for any help you can give.A good place to start is to diasable automatic updates for all programs that have the feature. Thanks so much for your quick response.  I'm pretty sure I have already done that but I will double check tomorrow when I go in to work in case I MISSED a program.  Incidentally, until we added the second computer and set up the intra-office network, this problem never occurred.    Quote from: Monkeys Mom on April 08, 2007, 12:50:42 PM

Solve : Problems with Mp3 player?

Answer»

I have a RCA MP3 player 3 months old.It just seems to have STOPPED working all together.I charge it up push play RCA flashes on the screen them it flashes Shutting down and goes off.Or it will just Keep flashing RCA till it goes off.I have reset it several times. Also my computer doesn't seem to show the device when i go to DOWNLOAD song now either.I've done everything to get it working again......................Have you looked in your User's manual for any troubleshooting tips?I've done everyhting.......What do you mean by "charge it up"?  It sounds like your mp3 player has a low battery.Fully charged up....What sort of battery does it take? A custom one to fit the device, or a regular AAA battery?

Possible causes: Wrong charge, worn battery, bad connectorsCustome battery. The unit is fully charged, have done the reset on it. Quote from: jddk on April 10, 2007, 03:10:41 PM

Custome battery.
What's that?  Is this a STANDARD battery that normally comes with that model player?I dont have a RCA Mp3 Player and this might sound a bit of a patronising question but have you locked it?! For example on my iRiver (and the majority of other Mp3 Players) there is a little switch on the side that if you flick will lock the device. For example if the device is in your pocket then the buttons CANT be pressed. Its much like with a phone, the 'Lock Keypad' function.

Solve : Change your Windows boot screen!?

Answer»

For Win2000 and WinXP users only, I'm afraid.

Note: NEVER install the Vista Transformation Pack. I've been fighting to GET it uninstalled for months now. Literally FIGHTING. I've got it 99% removed, but the boot screen still says "Windows Vista". Pain in the *censored*. Rather than reinstall Windows XP, I decided to make the boot screen cooler, since this is getting old:

There's a program that lets you change that. Link below. I downloaded a few additional bootskins, because the default sucked too. I like these:

http://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/Problems with the transformation pack?
Run the uninstaller
There is a command you should run that finds missing windows files, if someone knows the command, please post it. I did. I told it to remove everything. Sadly it didn't, and SFC /scannow wrecked Windows (had to use Last Good Config).

So, I am, in classic fashion, ignoring the final problem and making it look cooler. Been using this for a while now.
It is a free trial though, not entirely freeware.According to Download.com, BootSkin has "No limitations".that "middle" blue one is freakin  AWESOME!!!

it's blue right? I'm kinda color blind  ;-0I tried WindowBlinds at one TIME...the trial, though.

When I went to UNINSTALL it, the taskbar was never the same...no color...

Tried to restore, but that didn't work...forget what else I reied to remedy it...to no avail.

Ended up having to do a new install to fix the problem WB created...maybe it was just me...nobody's perfect...except for Rob... Window Blinds will create havoc on an XP machine...not that i'm aggravated or upset or thouroughly teed off about it or anything....Face it, any software that modifies these certain files that have to do with the GUI will have a chance of messing something up. Its changing files that Windows automatically knows to protect. (Does that tell you something? )Hey,Dilbert....that last known good configuration
works just fine....just used it ..LOL

Solve : Graphics don't show/pop up windows blank?

Answer»

My system info:

MS Win XP; Home EDITION; V2002 sp2; Intel(R) PENTIUM 4CPU, 2.80 GHz, 2.79 GHz, 1.00 GB of RAM; Norton AntiVirus & Spybot run regularly; Verizon DSL shared with roomate -- I have the wireless connection; JAVA; media players; external hard-drive software; Adobe reader; scanner software; Registry Mechanic, etc.

If it were not that I really need to see the graphics for a particular three sites (all by the same person, BTW), I would not even be all that concerned.  It's a problem that occurs infrequently at other sites.  All I see in the pop-up windows are the blank boxes with the filename in the upper left corner, where the graphic should be.  Even the initial icon to click on for the pop-up is only a blank box with filename.  I can view the initial icon and see the graphics in the pop-up windows on my roommate's computer fine and have heard others view them fine, also :-?.

Here's one of the three sites at which the graphics don't load: http://www.notsoswift.com/amindandacard/80starot/

Thanks for any help you can offer.  It's very frustrating.

When that page finally finished loading in my Firefox browser, it had no graphics.  Strangely, before it finished loading, a box appear to the right side of the screen where an image named eightiestarot.jpeg seemed to be intended for loading.  But, when the page was finished loading, that box had disappeared and the upper part of space where it had been simply displayed the text name of the image, eightiestarot.jpeg.

So, at least concerning that web page, I don't think you're browser is malfunctioning.  You're just looking at a weird site.  Can you post some other link where you believe your browser is not displaying images that should appear? Thanks, egghead!  I was really wondering if it weren't just a weird site.  But so many others are ABLE to view those graphics and I can view them on my roommate's computer.  STRANGE!

It's really only the three sites of that particular person that give me consistent trouble.  Any other time has been so infrequent as to make no impression on my (admittedly aging  ) memory.

Oh, and stranger yet?  I actually contacted the website a while AGO and have heard nothing back since their initial "we'll look into it."

Solve : Graphic and Video card?

Hey everyone, I have a question....
My friend said he was doing something on his computer when an error message popped up saying he needed a new 'graphic drive'. Then i asked him 'did he mean graphic/video card, not drive.
What is the difference between a Graphic Card and a Video Card?
I looked up 'graphic drive' but i couldn't find ANYTHING. Does that exist? You may want to ask him if he is absoluetly sure about the wording of the error message.  This is critcal so we don't post any erroneous information.

I've never heard of a "graphic drive".

A "graphic(s) card" and "video card" are the same.I thought they were the same. I never heard of a 'graphic drive' and i couldn't find it on the internet either so i just wanted to MAKE sure. Thanks. You're welcome...Perhaps he meant that he needed a driver?THATS what i thought....i guess he misread the message, LOL

Solve : Hard disk space to ram??

Answer»

i heard you can change hard DISK space to ram, anyone know if this is true, and if so how do i do it? :-?You can allocate space from your hard disk as virtual memory, which Windows will use as RAM, albeit much slower, if that's what you mean.
What OS are you using?
Windows automatically allocates a certain AMOUNT of space, this can be changed if you want.im using XP, but have about 256mb of ram or soGo to Control Panel --> System --> Advanced --> Settings (under Performance) --> Advanced -> Change.
You can change the size of the paging file (virtual memory) there.
I'd advise setting either the default of Windows managing it, or the initial and maximum sizes to the same value, maybe around 640Mb.
Virtual memory is not usually the answer to increasing performance dramatically if that's what you're asking.  I'd advise a RAM upgrade myself if you're after better performance, 256Mb is not ideal for XP.They are at initial size 390mb and maximum is 774mb, wich shall i change? If I were you I'd SET them both to 640Mb.
This prevents the paging file getting fragmented and can boost performance a little.ok THANKS mate! will do. and when i get some money together i will get a ram upgrade for sure. thanks for the helpOK, you're welcome.
Belated greetings and welcome to the forum, lol.

Solve : recent places folder?

Answer» HI,

I think someone copied a file from my laptop ONTO their USB stick while I was at work. I got home and started to work on the file, then when I pressed save it SAID 'cannot find location, please insert removable storage device into drive d' (or something like that) so I 'saved as' in another location, then checked my 'recent places' folder. SURE enough there was evidence of a removable disk being modified on my laptop whilst I was at work. I confided this to my house mate, checked my laptop again later that night and it had been deleted from the recent places folder. I now want to confront that person about what happened as it is now obvious to me that they had copied my file, but wondered if there's any way I can GET the evidence back. I have tried the undo button, but to no avail. This happened on Tuesday (8th). Can anybody help me?

Thanks

Solve : Is anyone having to deal with BYOD issues at work or HIPPA compliance??

Answer»

I am now working in a small hospital admin office, and we are dealing with the issue of our network, and HIPAA compliance.

This article talks about the BRING Your Own Device (BYOD) issues we are also having to deal with:

http://pusz4frog.wordpress.com/2012/04/30/tigertext-the-future-of-hipaa-compliant-text-messaging-for-hospitals-and-doctors-and-the-solution-to-doctors-byod-requirements/

So we are also dealing with the issue that Doctors are using iPads and smartphone to access their hospital emails and patient files on the network, and then copying/pasting the info into their text messages to other doctors, nurses and patients. This really opens the hospital up to possible HIPAA fines and lawsuits.

Now the above article recommends Tigertext as a HIPAA compliant form of secure texting which could take care of that issue since the message is on a closed network and the messages can be deletes by the hospital, or they can be set to automatically delete.

But what about a similar app that does the same (as Tigertext does for text messages) for emails they send via their personal email accounts?

Anyone know of such an app?

Is anyone else having to deal with these issues at work, any advise on how you deal with HIPAA and BYOD?What is the possibility of making everyone read this 25 page document?

SUMMARY OF THE
HIPAA PRIVACY RULE
http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/understanding/summary/privacysummary.pdf
Not being in the medical profession nor inclined to read the applicable regulatory instruments you refer to i make the following observation. If i read your concern correctly it is a potential for hospital (maybe your own) vulnerability to the behavior of medical "professionals" to adherence and compliance with existing rules of data communications. It falls to the professionals if so advised by authority (you or the Administrator if that is not you) to follow directives. If they should be aware and there is doubt if they are i would believe information as to what is required needs to be directed at them either through group meetings or direct personal advisory. Pointing out the "legal"requirements with attendant consequences if not adhered to would also be a good idea. If the failure to adhere continues after that administrative sanctions (appropriate to hospital liability) should be applied as related to hospital disciplinary codes. ONE cannot prevent stupidity or willful misconduct but place the onus of responsibility (after enlightenment) where it properly belongs.truenorthSounds like you need full endpoint SECURITY.  If you google that term, it might set you on the right path.  As to how to lock down personal email accounts - I know of no way.  I think you'd have to force email to REMAIN within certain restricted channels (and make it a disciplinary offence if this policy were breached).

The following search reveals quite a few avenues of enquiry: http://duckduckgo.com/?q=hipaa+email+compliant+service

Solve : how to Estimate the improvement resulting from the use of the cache.?

Hello,

could any one help me in how to solve this PROBLEM ?

A computer system CONTAINS a main memory of 32 K 16-bit words. It also has a 4K-word cache divided into eight-line sets with 32 words PER line. Assume that the cache is initially empty. The processor fetches words from locations 0, 1, 2,…,4351 in that order. It then repeats this fetch sequence nine more TIMES. The cache is 10 times faster than the main memory. Estimate the improvement RESULTING from the use of the cache. Assume and LRU policy for block replacement.

Solve : Hotkeys not working with some AT computers?

Answer»

I have a program that runs out of DOS and after the program starts it requires that the hotkeys be used.  I've sucessfully run the program on some older AT machines in the past.  On NEWER PS2 style COMPUTERS the program starts but using the hotkeys causes the screen to go BLANK.  I can USE ctrl break to stop the program and return to DOS after that happens.  I thought that maybe it was something to do with the AT style keyboard vs the PS2 style however I just rebuilt an older AT MACHINE and the hotkeys do the same thing.

I'm beginning to think it may be something in the video card or video setup that doesn't recognize the hotkey function and causes the screen to go blank.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Solve : Having problem with my pc?

Answer»

Good day,
I have a tricky problem with my computer, and would appreciate some help.

Now what it does is the following,
As soon as I start my pc, it does the tests checkups and all that jazz,  but when it gets to my windows7 ULTIMATE startup, before the login page, my pc switches itself off, note, it does not restart.
I thought that it might be windows7 so I backed up my files onto my other hdd, and reinstalled windows7 ultimate. And at random points, my pc just switches off again.
next i took out my recently installed ram, and left the old ram in, and it did the same, tried that same thing with leaving in the new ram, and taking out the old ram, still the same problem.
Next, i swopped my power supply with another ONE i have, same thing.
tried another hdd i have, same deal.
thought it may be a cooling issue like i had with  previous pc, installed a cooler master  jet, same problem but my pc now runs on 20 degrees and my mobo on 30.
I checked my pc for burn marks, no burn marks.
checked my cpu, none either,
I changed my bios to the fail safe settings, and it still does the same,
to rule out the disc i tried installing windows 7 ultimate from a friend's disc, still the same,
to rule out windows 7 all in all, i tried installing xp, still the same.
ok,
so,
my stats ae the following,
AMD K8 dual core,
nvidia geforce 6100 pm-m2 v2.0 mobo
4gb ddr 2 (800) ram,
Seagate 500gb 7200rpm,
samsung 160gb 7200 rpm,
nvidia px8400gs tdx
600watt BAOBAB psu newly installed,
and a standard dvd rw sony

any help would be appreciatedThats an ECS MBoard.....it's either the board or the PSU.

Borrow a known working PSU of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there to see if it's the culprit.
If it is i'd invest a bit more in the next one as it's an important component.Actually I replaced my psu with another one, a gigabyte of equivalent size and wattage, still doing the same.
Its doing the same no matter what os I TRY, busy formatting again not the quick format the proper one. Then i'm afraid it's the MBoard. Is it Repairable?

I saw on another forum the same problem, same pc funny enough, and they SAID it could be a capacitor, and i checked all mine and they are fine.
Ok i got xp to run to the desktop after installation, and it did the same nowI would take it to a local PC shop to have them confirm it's the MBoard...alright i build pc's, and such and a friend of mine also advised me to flush the bios and get an update, currently sitting with my laptop. waiting on a solution to this, my friend the IT tech also said the mobo looks fine, settings are fine,
no clue what to do now
oh it started about two or so days ago, and the more i started it the worse it got, it wont even read from my 500gb now, only the 160 thought that might be usefull to know
oh and also has not gone off for a while now that i am running it in safe modeWhen you re-installed did you also remember to re-install all drivers starting with the MBoard chipset drivers ? ?

Not sure how he can just look at a MBoard and determine it's OK...

P.S. If it ran before this started i seriously doubt it's a BIOS issue...

Solve : "Can I Delete This?"?

Answer»

Is there a central forum location for "can I delete this?" questions?  If not, could one be started? Is there some specific file or folder about which you are asking?   Ugggh!  I meant to say "Can I Delete This From My Hard Drive?"

In my case I need to delete things because no matter what I take off my hard drive it is still choked full.

Also, the central location could answer the question, "can I move this from laptop's hard drive to my external hard drive?"

I need to ask the question of just about everything listed in my C drive. If you're running out of space it's unlikely that deleting specific files or uninstalling programs will help much unless they are video files, AUDIO files, or large database files. More likely you need to:

1) DISABLE system restore (or use DISK cleanup to delete all but the most recent restore point). This will immediately free up a huge amount of space.

2) Reduce the space allotted to System Restore

3) Reduce the space allotted to Temporary Internet Files

4) Disable hibernation

5) Check the size of your pagefile. If you have a lot of ram it will be set too high.

6) Empty your Temp folder & empty the recycle bin

7) GET a larger hard driveAll my files are fairly small.  I've taken off photos, and starting installing my games on the G drive and uninstalling them from the C once I've made SURE they run on G.  Pretty much all that's left is things that I have no idea of what they are, hence the need to ask.

I think I need more information on how to do the things on your list.  I have Windows XP, Service Pack 3.  Should this conversation be moved to the Windows section of the forum?

Adding: Wow, I disabled Hibernation and it did make a significant difference.

Solve : Where facebook accounts hacked??

Answer»

First off, I am not a facebook use-- but I do have an account made years ago because my kids thought I should.  I most likely will delete the account but before I do, I am getting an unusual amount of 'likes' or 'friends' (WHATEVER it is) by the same few people.  My young DAUGHTER, her young friends, her young friends parents etc.

I'm not soliciting these requests and they have no reason to request a response from me.  And if they did it wouldn't be multiple times.  Everytime I OPEN my hotmail account to view email, I have facebook requests to LIKE or friend.

Could their accounts be hacked like an email account and sending off dangerous requests  from their contacts list to 'like'?

Tom.

I hope I opened this discussion in the correct section.  FEEL free to move it to the correct category as required.

Sorry you missed my point.

With the Bluetooth you never have a reason to take the phone out of your pocket. You take and make calls with the dongle that goes in lour ear. No Hands. Smartphone is out of sight.

And stop using a purse. Wear a fanny pack.I guess I completely missed your point LOL, yeah fanny packs may be unsightly or outdated, but they're practical...
You got me thinking about creating completely monolithic smartphones that interface with everything through wireless technology. All buttons are TURNED into capacitive touch zones. Charging can be done through inductive coils. Bluetooth has just enough range for personal use but doesn't reach beyond the walls of your office.
Perhaps record stores could use Bluetooth to PROMOTE a hot-selling single, like when you walk into their vicinity a request pops up on your phone to join a Bluetooth hotspot, you click OK and it redirects you to a predefined page...
http://www.liveadmobile.co.uk/news/
It's called "Bluetooth Proximity Marketing."Bluetooth was prevalent on cellphones in the mid to late 90's. For a while, bluetooth was integrated into almost every laptop, too.

By the way, bluetooth can be used for more than just headsets. Many cellphones in the mid to late 90's could be synced and whatnot using a bluetooth connection to a laptop (or desktop with a bluetooth adapter).

It's also completely unrelated to smartphones. I would have thought they all had bluetooth to begin with. A quick google sort of confirms this; I can't find any smartphones that don't have bluetooth capability.

It's basically a replacement for that older Infrared Port that was common on older laptops, but the troublesome NATURE of Infrared transfer made it difficult to use.A clarification. The Bluetooth is NOT u;ed to link to the cell tower, which may be miles away. B

A t short range, under two meters, Bluetooth can operate in full-duplex in the presence of other  microwave transceivers, including  then smartphone itself. It is transparent to the user. Once trained, the device 'knows' its partner.

Bluetooth can run very low power at short range. Recharging the energy cell is almost a non-issue. The Bluetooth dongle will talk  all day. But the smartphone won't.

Smartphones have  Bluetooth applicability. But not all have it implemented. Many low-end cell phones do not have it.
Bluetooth can be implemented for a very secure short range
connection.

Bear in mind that field strength of radio waves decrease with the inverse of the square of the distance. With the digital  methods used in current digital technology. You could have everybody in a shopping mall using a Bluetooth all at the same time. But the smartphone has to be on your person on in the fanny pack. Well within two meters.

Voice activated allows you to call out. It understand ssimple commands and numbers. In different languages. There is a button on  the dongle that you hit to turn off the mic when you don't want the thing to respond. Or the button can be on the smartphone and you can squeeze it without taking it out.

Yes, is SOUNDS like digital wireless overkill. But this is where technology is taking us. New devices with performance beyond what was POSSIBLE many years ago.( Except for the military and very big companies.)

Most of this was at the CES. More is coming. Bluetooth is alive.

Bluetooth headsets do not need a 1 or 10mbps speed for  basic voice  transmission. A speed of 64 kbps is enough for digital voice . (And will sound better that a typical analog telephone.) Low bandwidth  makes it possible for reliable secure short range communication between the smartphone and the headset.

If everybody kept their smartphone in a pocket wile walking about, grab and run theft would go down.

Of cause, the criminals will think of some other way to get you. Judging by recent USA news, it would seem that the criminals are now using banks as a form of legal gambling.
Why bother with petty theft? Why not put a message on the background screen to deter theft ? ?
After all you're convinced it woulld work for laptops... Quote

I'm sorry...where have you been living? I can remember Bluetooth being in phones for at least the last 10 years. You're officially off the edge now...
Patio, I didn't design these tings.
I never said I like the idea. It is what it is. Everybody is going to get one. It is unavoidable. Its the new thing.
HTC is a big player and has the money  -
to convince every  everybody to love it and buy it.
Except you and me.
..and am am not very sure about you.If you actually read the article, it's not about stereo bluetooth devices being something new, it's about the quality of audio received over said devices. The HTC one uses a better codec for clearer audio.

However, this isn't something new, as mentioned in the article the Plantronics Backbeat headset has excellent quality. I know that first-hand as well, as I own a pair of them and they've been around for years. This is actually my second pair of Backbeat headphones, as my chihuahua though the first pair made a good chew toy.

They also talk about battery life being an issue with many bluetooth stereo devices. My Backbeat gets 7 hours of continuous listening, which is more than enough for me. I only have to charge it about every 2-3 days, and I use it quite a bit with my Samsung Galaxy Tab.

I don't see Bluetooth reducing phone theft. I'd wager that more phones get quietly stolen out of people's pockets or bags by pickpockets than they do right out of their hands.

I've been trying to figure out geek's reasoning. The best I can come up with is if you are in a seedy neighborhood then it might be better to keep your phone in your pocket rather then out in the open. But that doesn't make a whole lot of sense since it will still be obvious to most people that you have a cellphone anyway. Besides, if you're in a seedy neighborhood and you have a smartphone I would argue that most people would be using it to get out of that area using the mapping software, which last I checked sort of needs to have you holding it.

Basically, As far as theft is concerned, this won't solve anything, since for places where it might be a problem, the problem has to do with the area and local crime and has nothing to do with how you are carrying it.I know a lot of people here who have had their phones stolen. All of them without their immediate knowledge.

On public transportation and at big crowded markets is where it usually happens here. Stolen from their bags or pockets.

There's a huge market for used (translated "stolen") mobile phones here. Most places that buy second hand phones will do so with no questions asked, no proof of ownership required. You can find several of these shops in any given shopping mall in Bangkok. Quote

It has a lot to do with how you carry it. Where do you live?
Would you carry your credit card between your fingers?

You don't need to hold your cell phone to use Google maps. You don't even have to look at it.

Solve : People come into our lives....?

Answer» i had to share this with u guys too.....something to think about

People come into your life for a reason,
a season or a lifetime.

When you know which one it is,
you will know what to do for that person.

When someone is in your life for a REASON,
it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.
They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then, without any wrongdoing on your PART or at an
inconvenient time, this person will say or do something
to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they walk
away. Sometimes they ACT up and force you to take a stand.
What we MUST realize is that our need has been met, our
desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent
up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because
your turn has come to share, GROW or learn. They bring
you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons,
things you must build upon in order to have a solid
emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson,
love the person and put what you have learned to use in
all other relationships and areas of your life.

Solve : Help with Computer Gaming Setup?

Answer»

Now I actually do not know much about computers but I have recently been reading a website about the different essential components for a PC setup and so I only know the very basics. Anyway, one example of a good gaming setup around $1,000 was this:

http://www.gamingpcbuilds.com/build-a-custom-gaming-pc-1000/

I was wondering if the parts mentioned in this setup are compatible with each other and would you recommend any upgrades provided the cost remains around $1,100 - $1,150 no more? Also with regards to the case, how do I know what size case to buy to 'contain' the computer (I know there are examples offered on the web page but I might want to look at different ones, ones with a window in them like the Antec DF-85)

Finally, how would I be able to insert neon lightings inside the computer case so that it can be seen through the window of the computer case?

Thank you very much (Y)There are still a LOT of unknowns here.  What is your budget too work with?  Is that the unit you want to build or did you have parts in mind?  What OS?  What will you use the machine for in addition to games?  YES, you can get all most like a tube shaped neon light for around $30.  I think you Velcro it in.  Stuff like that generally, makes the inside of the case warmer so you need a good cooling system too.Budget - £1,150 ($1767)
According to the website, the cost of all the parts costs about $964 when buying used but I will be buying new parts so it'll probably cost around $1,150 with the new parts

Unit - Well thats the first unit I saw that actually looked nice but of course, i'm unsure whether more improved parts would be needed

OS - Windows 7 but i can buy a different operating system if need be

Purpose - Mostly playing games but I will also be using it for facebook, email, youtube (just GENERAL internet browsing)

And with the cooling system what would you recommend?with ur budget, i think this sysytem will suite u. it was a giveaway reveiw but the spec are awesome. all INFO have in the LINK below n i think this monster will enough for beginner like u. enjoy

Solve : Best Way To Backup PC?

Answer»

I'm novice, I wanted to know if somebody here has a guide on the best way to make sure my PC has it's FILES and setting backed up.

I have an external harddrive which I use to backup, but I don't do it often as I should because it's a pain in the *censored*.
I manually drag files from the PC to the disc folder.

1) I was wondering if there is an easier way to automatically update the external harddrive/sync it.

2) I also was wondering, I only backup My Documents/Pictures/Music...is that all I can back up/sync or are there other things?

3) Is there a way my settings and desktop can be backed up?  This way if the PC crashes, I have my browser bookmarks and know what programs I had downloaded on my desktop and c drive?

As it stands now, the only thing I know to do is drag c:/documents files (like word/excel/jpegs...and I can't help but thing there has to be a more easier, complete way to back up.

4) Oh...last...what the heck is system restore and should I do it?

Basically, we have a malware guide, does somebody have a "checklist" guide to ensuring a good backup?

Thanks! The best way to back up your PC is to create hard drive image.

Acronis TRUE Image: http://www.acronis.com/ - not free, but the best

Free alternatives:
- Macrium Reflect: http://www.macrium.com/ReflectFree.asp
- DriveImage XML: http://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm (tutorial: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial160.html)
- SelfImage: http://www.excelcia.org/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=21
- Paragon Drive Backup: http://www.paragon-software.com/home/db-express/ Quote from: Broni on July 02, 2011, 11:46:56 AM

The best way to back up your PC is to create hard drive image.
Acronis True Image: http://www.acronis.com/ - not free, but the best...
Free for Western Digital Internal hard drives.  http://support.wdc.com/product/downloaddetail.asp?swid=119&wdc_lang=en
I'm with Broni on this.

Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that requires you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "test" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to return to the prior state any time you choose.

I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of breed, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is Macrium Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the options. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image.

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (ie, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS (INSTALLING a service pack, upgrading IE, etc). Also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (cd, dvd, external drive, etc). For obvious reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The best option is a second internal hd if you have one.

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to finish the process. Alternatively, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you can create when you first install the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). Other partitions can be restored without a reboot.
This is not actually a disagreement. What Broni and Allen said represents the preference of most personal computer users. A snapshot image is a sure way to make sure you get everything back, including the system files needed to boot your computer.
But on the other hand, the backup utility divided by Microsoft is functional.Heck, should be called a industrial grade program. In a commercial setting it works very well. For most home users it seems rather awkward, even bizarre.
If you wish to learn how the Microsoft backup program works, you need to start practicing on a few very small files in perhaps a couple of small folders. The default backup device is the floppy drive. So, it's rather obvious why many people don't even want to try to learn how to use the MS backup. But back up device can also be a tape drive or even an external hard drive.
From time to time I use the Microsoft active utility for certain specific issues. If there is any interest in this I might make another post somewhere else and explain in more detail. Unfortunately, the documentation included is very, very thin.Let's add EASEUS Todo Backup Free 2.5 to the list. What I currently do is

-Put in my external harddrive (I have seagate)
-Go to my documents, drag it to the ex hard drive
-Go to my music/pictures, do the same

1) What advantages does creating an image have over what I do?

2) I also don't seem to understand, when you create an image, is that
-Just an image of your desktop icons
-Or an image of all your files/folders/programs

Meaning if your PC got destroyed and you had to re-format, you could just put in the ex hard drive, click the image, and all the software files, icons, documents, pictures, and music would be on?

3) I don't plan to use the "paid" version, so it using one of those free versions worth learning as opposed to my status QUO?

4) In Windows Vista, is there a way to get it so the PC automatically back ups daily/weekly or if not, can you get it to remind you (if so how)?

5) Last, what about system restore?  What is that, I mean is that where your PC basically backs up on it's own C-drive, which is good unless the OS needs removed?

-How does system restore work and how is it best used or done?

Thanks!Did your external HD not come with an excellent backup program?

Traditionally, backup is done by files and directories. Older  backup devices could not duplicate the file system of a hard drive. The backup device was a tap recorder.

Am image backup is a supplication of everything on your computer. Of course, the backup device is not a resubstitute for hour computer, but it does have all the information. So it is called an image. It is essence without substance.

Windows 7 has built-in backup tools. The Microsoft site has more information.
Windows 7 features. Backup and Restore

There is lot more to be sad about backup. but i don't want to 'snow' you with too much information. After reading the MS info. come back here and ask some questions. So if I use one of these, and my hardrive goes kaboom

1) Can I get all my files (docs/music/pics) back?
2) Can I get all my software (MS Office/iTunes/Skype) back?
3) Can I get all my settings back (like what my username was and desktop background/time)?
4) Will this save automatically?

5) When I get my PC back, how can I restore it to the way it was?

1) Yes, thats why its a back up
2) The software is what YOU should install, so just re-install it
3) Yes, that whats backed up (except the time 'set' in the BIOS and does not apply)
4) Depends on what software you use
5) back from where / what ??Well I got my PC back today, and I don't ever want this problem again.

Should I get something like carbonite/dropbox or would
Acronis True Image or Macrium Reflect be better?

Again, I want it where all my files (docs/settings/itunes) are automatically backed up.  I can access them from any PC or Mobile device and if my PC breaks again, I just can go to the site, and be able to restore my PC with all files and docs to the way it was.

I hear carbonite advertised all the time, never heard of acronis.Would I be able to with acronis use this and transfer data to my iPhone, or if I SWITCH computers, to a mac?

Can it backup my itunes music and playlist?Wow, I think carbonite might be better, how come none of you recommended it?Carbonite Ii a cloud server. About $60 a year.
Or you can buy a Seagate Go Flex for about $90 with a one year warranty. So carbonite is the same thing, basically, as apple iCloud?
I think I am going with carbonite, unless you all think something else is better and cheaper!

Solve : ni-mh battery charging?

Answer»

i got a problem im trying to charge batterys but they stop when i charge thom for like 5 minutes i dont now why please helpMore details, please.  Is this a battery for a laptop computer?   How many batteries?  How old are they? How are you trying to charge them?  its a double AA and when i try to charge alkaline batteries(non rechargeable) it does not charge      Quote from: computer 12 on May 26, 2012, 11:21:53 AM

when i try to charge alkaline batteries(non rechargeable) it does not charge

Huh? That's normal. Many Ni-MH chargers will shut off if you try to charge alkalines (They see them as faulty rechargeables). You can't charge ordinary alkaline batteries, and it is dangerous to try, they can explode. Non-rechargeable alkalines are "primary cells" Manufacturers of primary batteries expressly forbid recharging. When they are finished, you throw them away.

Attempting to recharge a discharged alkaline battery can cause the production of gas within the canister. As the canister is normally sealed, very HIGH pressures can be created within it. This can rupture the seal, resulting in leakage of the contents — for example, aqueous potassium hydroxide and identifiable in more severe cases as a hissing sound from the battery — or even an explosion. Warning signs include bulging of the ends of the battery. Recharging a battery produces heat within the battery. Sometimes the heat can be excessive, with the attendant risks of fire, explosion and/or injury.

Potassium hydroxide is corrosive and may cause injury, especially to the eyes and skin, or corrode the battery contacts in the equipment. Eye protection is always advisable when recharging any batteries.

If you've been putting normal Alkaline batteries into a ni-mh battery charger then you are lucky you have not caused a fire. Why you could possibly think charging a none re-chargable is a good idea?

Seems that way to me, too. I thought everybody knew that plain old alkalines are used once only. It seems kind of obvious, given that it is kind of hard to AVOID noticing that batteries are divided into two tribes: rechargeable and non-rechargeable. He even uses the phrase "non-rechargeable" in connection with the alkaline cells that refuse to charge.
And with a caution on the side of all commercial non-rechargable batteries stating something along the lines of -

Do not mis-use or re-charge due to risk of leakage or explosion.Dou you suppose he'll post any more in this thread?

I'm not  Unless he's lookin for a deal on fire extinguishers...ok i just putted the alkalines to see how stupid my charger is not that stupid any way the charger is usb, how many mA does a usb 2.0 and 1.1?

USB 1.1 and USB2.0 specifications both define a maximum draw of 5 unit loads, with a unit load being 100MA (THEREFORE maximum draw 500mA). USB3.0 defines a unit load as 150mA, and a maximum draw is 6 units loads (900mA). HOWEVER the ports on some computers may not be compliant (over or under)

Solve : The Truth About Printer Ink.?

Answer»

I want to know.

Why is original ink for my HP 6500 so expensive?
Why don't the cheap ink cartridges work the same?

OK, money is involved. But I mean what really is the difference.
Is it really the quantity of the Ink? I don't believe that. But I am not sure why.

Tell me why I don't believe the higher price ink is better.

(Using Google can't find a credible answer less that five years old. Is said TOPIC a dead issue?)"Why is original ink for my HP 6500 so expensive?" Because it is the practice of most (if not all) printer companies to induce you to buy their printer at a very low cost and hopefully have you purchase their propitiatory ink cartridges. By the way please note i did NOT say printer manufacturers because in many instances printers of various brands can be made in the same factory and branded differently. There are methods to minimize/avoid the high cost of brand associated cartridges but for various reasons starting with lack of consumer KNOWLEDGE the alternatives are NOT known.Certainly the printer producers will never tell you about them as it would run counterproductive to their marketing strategy.
"Is it really the quantity of the Ink? I don't believe that. But I am not sure why." While it is hard to say in each and every case why you may encounter this (because there can be varying causes). It is a fact that for certain ink jet printers it can make a substantial difference in the print result (quality) depending on the properties of the "ink" in the cartridge. This is also a factor to be considered when purchasing bulk ink to perform your own refills. That is because due to the ink jet nozzles being of a certain size can be affected by ink that is too viscous or not viscous enough for the nozzles. I do not know all the brands and models that can be negatively influenced by the ink variance however in earlier Epson (may still be the case in current models) they were susceptible to that. If you were to become a customer of a bulk ink supplier you would find that for bulk ink purchases the brand (at least ) is a factor in the order.  Hope this helps, truenorth Quote

For once google nailed it...It comes down to a number of things, but one of the main things is indeed the quality of the ink. While in appearance they might look the same, cheap ink is not equal to the stuff original cartridges are filled with.

First, there's color quality. Original inks tend to last longer before fading. While this isn't so important for your average printing (B&W documents, things people plan on tossing out eventually, etc.) it does matter when people want to print things that last, such as photos or documents they want to last LONG and still look good.

Second, it's been reported that some third party inks cause more clogs because of low quality ink. It's not to say that originals won't clog the heads, but it's less likely.

Finally, third party products (cartridges or tanks) aren't always made to the best of standards and sometimes leak, ruining the printer for the most part.quaxo,
I just got some cheap ink for my HP 6500
I fear you are right.
The cheep carts leak and rewind my hardwood floor.
The HP carts never did that.In my opinion they are so expensive because the producer ( hp for instance ) tries to get its money back for printer device.

Here in Romania i got an Canon printer for 40 euros and its inks (color one and balck/white one) were 20 euros, so if i will not refill the first inks next time when i will get new ones i will have my printer's price . Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 18, 2012, 11:34:18 AM

It's very popular here in Thailand for people to use tank systems or clone/refilled cartridges simply because of the cost of originals (they cost as much as they do in the US).

You wouldn't believe the number of times I've had printers brought to me that had the tank system's tubes leak or clogged print heads or leaking cartridges. And given the time and cost to repair these printers, it's often cheaper just to get a new one. It gets on the rollers, feeders, gears, everything. Without being disassembled and completely cleaned, it will never print right again. Like I said before, I'm not saying original ink will never cause clogs or issues, it's just less frequent.

For printers that have a single print head (part of the printer, not the cartridges), replacing the print head is very expensive. I had a Canon Pixma 3300. Paid $100 for it, new. Used and abused it for years. Finally, after about 4 years, the black section of the print head clogged. Tried everything to unclog it but no luck. The print head was easy to remove with the lift of a lever. Called Canon and asked if I could get a new print head somewhere, to which they said I could, but it would cost $75. The printer was promptly sold for $10 to a junk dealer and I bought an HP Advant K109a-z, which has the cartridges with print heads built into them, so if one gets clogged, toss the cartridge and get another. So far, it hasn't let me down.

I still wouldn't use clone/refilled cartridges with my HP THOUGH, even though the print head clogging wouldn't be an issue. Still have to deal with leaks and cheap ink. Anyway, I would advise ANYONE that while the printer is still under warranty to use original cartridges so it doesn't void the warranty when something does go wrong. How much do you pay?  I have to spend $60 for both cartridges but, I hardly print stuff.
