Solve : Activation Key Issues?

Answer»

I previously, used this key an copy of XP with this machine.  Thing is that when I enter the key its not accepting it, Im entering it correctly.  This is the second time I ever used it.  I know this is really stupid but, it wont accept the keyYou can not re-use activation KEYS unless approved by Microsoft and you can contact them with the phone number that should be on the screen when the activation is rejected.

It is also against forum rules to ask or help in these matters. Even if you bought they key, reusing it is makes it a pirated key. You have to take it up with Microsoft.

This does not make sense. If the XP was working on this machine, there should be no problem installing it again.
Are you actually installing it again on the same machine? Thee is no limit on how many times you install the same CD and product key on the very same machine.
What did you change?
Is this a retail XP CDIts the same machine, I didnt do anything differnt then change the drives.  Its an upgrade disk, OEMOne more time ::

Did this OEM CD come with that PC ? ?  Yes...or no ?No, this is an upgrade diskThen you're outta luck i'm afraid...Because of lack of detail, it is hard to give the OP the best ANSWER. But a vague unclear request oft activation help implies the OP is trying to circumvent the EULA of  Microsoft.

Now if the machine was a Gateway, and if the OEM CD was the original from Gateway, and no changes were made to the hardware, the OP would be able to install the OS again and again.

But any change of the original Gateway hardware, including a hard drive, will STOP the install of the OEM CD that cam with the PC.

But I don't know if that is what he did. He should have said that in the first post.  Details matter. This is a machine I had built.  A tech gave me a iso copy of the disk cause, I had a working key an my disk was scratched an couldnt copy some of the files during install.

I was able to obtain a NEW copy of the same ver with a working key.

The thing is this key does or should work an its what I have in my records that I keep for each machine. Quote from: evilfantasy on June 22, 2012, 10:09:03 PM

Solve : converting video/audio from .prc and/or .ipa to .mp3, .wav, etc.?

Answer»

I have a software program, NATIONAL Geographics Hand Held Birds.  I purchased it several years ago with a package deal including a PalmOne Tungsten-T4.  It is a .prc based program.  It operates fine on the PalmONe instrument.  My problem with the device is that it is too large to fit into my iMainGo2 amplifier which accomodates an IPHONE, an iPod or any of Verizons's and ATT's phones.  I have a Verizon Samsung Illusion.  I do not have an Apple based phone.  I am desirous of obtaining a means of converting the .prc software to a mp3 or wav program, or any program which can be read by a Windows based system.  I also have that same program published in an .ipa format which can be read by iPhone, iPod or iPad - but not recognized by Windows.  Does anyone KNOW if there is a method whereby .ipa can be converted?  It seems to me that if the video is there and the sound is there that it can be converted into some program which can be recognized by Windows.   Please help.  You can respond publicly and/or privately.

Thank you,

Harry Roach
[email protected]

PRC files are either ebooks or Palm document files. If there are parts contained within, such as images or audio, they are not easily removed. There are converters out there that will convert PRC to PDF or other document formats. Search for them.

IPA files are Palm executables, programs written specifically for Palm devices. Even if you were ABLE to convert them, they probably wouldn't RUN properly on the hardware of non-Palm devices.

Solve : card readers?

Answer»

Morning.i want to take photos' with my mobile phone, then transfer them to my computer.i have been told i can buy a sim card reader.that i put my sim card in .
then transfer to my computer.but i have just read that the sim cards do not store photo's. so this wont' work .i am confused can anybody help.1) Depending on your phone you should be able to just connect it to your computer via usb and transfer the photos.

2) ALSO depending on your phone, you may be able to move the photos from internal memory to the sim card. Thanks ALan i will try it out.no additional data torage? like smartcard, mmc card, m2 card or any type of memory stick? or u said your phone is build in memory only. no additional or add on memory card? if that the case, old phone have infra red u can check u phone or just put your model n brand here.. will look in net for spec.. if u happen to have infrared, then u just need an irda device or infra red device that can synchronize your phone with your PC. then nowdays phone also have ready bluetooth, so same also, just need bluetooth device n program to synchronize the PC n phone. so need more info about your phone like brand n model. then we will help u better to solve this outThanks Badia nila.my phone is a Nokia 2220 slide (not expensive ) but suites my needs.that tricky... i see the info on web.. Quote

Nokia 2220 is equipped with TFT display with a resolution 160×128 pixel, 0.3-megapixel camera, 10 MB of internal memory, FM tuner, and an Opera Mini web browser. It also supports MP3 ringtones. This phone has not features memory card slot, email CLIENT, and Java support.
so not much i can help u since the info on site not much. can u see the phone if it had any port like a micro usb port or not? if it have then there are option for u in case u have. i will write instruction below, but u must have buy a cable for it, if not bundle in a BOX, u must go to store n buy it. then 1st at all after u buy the cable if it have any slot. download this free program http://www.softpedia.com/get/Mobile-Phone-Tools/Nokia/Nokia-PC-Suite.shtml install it on ur computer by follow the step by step. then u ready to synchronize your phone n PC to copy n paste the pic. but the info here http://www.phonegg.com/Nokia/2220/Nokia-2220.html seem a bit bad. but if there are slot for micro usb or it like usb but in smaller size, then u have no worries.

okay here the worst case.

if it happen it does not have any micro usb slot, then the only option left is to send the pic via mms to other phone in your house that have bluetooth n that will be easy to transfer the data to your pc. but seriously i tell u since i own nokia c2-00. the vga camera is so suck n really low quality that is useless to keep it.i also frustrated when i buy this phone due to cheap. but the mini operathat enable me to online get me out of depress. 2) Also depending on your phone, you may be able to move the photos from internal memory to the sim card.

Simcards do not store data. Phone numbers "stored" to a simcard are actually saved to the mobile provider's network. I don't know of any mobile provider that will store your pictures through the simcard.

1. If the phone has an SD card of some sort, get a reader for that card and connect it to the computer.

2. If there is no SD card, you will need to connect the phone to the computer through USB. Depending on the phone, this may work without installing additional software. However, not all phones will work this way, and you may need to install the Nokia software for your phone and transfer the files that way.im not sure if it have any micro usb slot, but perhap it can be connect to pc if u go to store n find usb connector that can connect to your phone via a converter. all nokia phone must have the software that is nokia pc suite to connect and sync their mobile with pc. it free n sometime bundle in the box. but in your case, it was cheap phone like me. but my c2-00 have micro usb slot n what more it also have memory card slot. your phone is so simple n not listed in page info if it have bluetooth. so i HOPE u can check if your phone have bluetooth FUNCTION or not. then we can get more detail on it. Solve : eBy updates Protection Policy?

Answer»

I just now saw this in my EBAY inbox
Quote

Dear geek9pm,
We're WRITING to let you know about updates to the eBay Buyer Protection Policy and the Funds Availability program.
The updated eBay Buyer Protection Policy goes into effect on JUNE 19, 2012:
A provision has been added stipulating that in some cases we may refund part of the cost of an item to the buyer, and receive reimbursement from the seller, to cover differences between the item described and the item actually received, such as items received with small parts missing or minor repairs needed. Buyers may be asked to provide written proof from an authorized third party detailing the cost of such repairs. In these cases, we will not require the buyer to return the item to the seller......

http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/user-agreement.html
The LINK has much more detail. Look for 'Buyer Protection.'
If you have a eBay account, you may have the new letter in your message box.I have an eBay account but had not seen that message.  I just signed on to my account and it was there; it was sent to my account on May 2, 2012.  Apparently, they implemented this policy to better PROTECT consumers.

Are you sure that's what the site said?  It doesn't make sense.  Your version of Internet Explorer has nothing to do with downloading and installing Chrome.

What version of Windows do you have?  Just for the record, what version of Internet Explorer do you have?  Where were you trying to download Chrome from?

I have no idea what "full complement of space available" means.  How much space is available on D?  How LARGE is D?  On many computers, D drive is a recovery partition?  In other words, the manufacturer put a copy of Windows and the original software installed on the computer, on drive D so that you can use it to restore your system in case of major problems with your operational Windows system on drive C.  If your drive D is a recovery partition put there by the manufacturer, it should be left alone; it should not be used for your personal files. So, we need more info from you regarding drive D.
Thank you soybean. I will have to ask my friend the replies to your questions. Will get back to you a.s.a.p.

Solve : FCC White Space Rulles?

Answer»

Not exactly news, but it is a possible breakthrough taht can speed up the Great White Space Wi-Fi.
http://transition.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2012/db0405/FCC-12-36A1.pdf

The PDF document shows these are proposed rule changes. No word yet when and if the FCC will really do it. If they do, it could help make the promise a reality.

BTW: If you have not heard, about five years ago the FCC said that unused UHF TV channels in the USA could be used to expand the coverage of Wi-Fi hots spots. without a LICENSE. At that time the RULES were very tough. (IMHO)
Quote

...The TV bands consist of six-megahertz channels designated 2 to 51 in four bands of frequencies in the VHF and UHF regions of the radio spectrum (54-72 MHz, 76-88 MHz, 174-216 MHz, and 470-698 MHz). ... Fixed devices MUST incorporate a geo-location capability and a means to access a database  that provides a list of available TV channels ...must contact a database to obtain a channel list before operating and re-check the database at least once daily.]

Fixed devices must incorporate a geo-location capability and a means to access a database  that provides a list of available TV channels ...must contact a database to obtain a channel list before operating and re-check the database at least once daily.
That was a real burden.
But now:
Quote
Eliminated the requirement that TV bands devices that incorporate geo-location and databas access must also listen (sense) to detect the signals of TV stations and low power auxiliary service stations (wireless MICROPHONES).
As part of that change, the COMMISSION also revithe rules in several respects to reflect use of that method as the only means for determining
channel availability.... to verify their operating location at regular time intervals.
The database change can mean a lot to short-range routers that what to use the White Space for  penetration in areas where there are the current 802.11 frequencies just don;t do the job. It will reduce the cost a lot.

This could mean a rural Wi-Fi Hot Spot could easily cover an area of dense vegetation and get distances well beyond  3 km (about 2 miles). Or maybe a lot more. Depending on the power limits.
Quote
Fixed devices are permitted to operate with up to one watt transmitter power output and may use an  antenna that provides up to 6 dBi of gain.
That means effective power of four watts.

Solve : Cyber Crime?

Answer»

Just curious.

If a criminal access the internet (LET's say posted something on Facebook) using anonymous ID under a public wifi, with his laptop, is it traceable?  Yes.

Just curious. What sort of crime are we talking about here?Let's say a murderer. To not reveal his location through electronic traces.

I know we can track the IP if he is posting from his house. Or track the signal if he is posting from his mobile.

But let's say he is using his laptop under the airport's wifi, with an anonymous account instead of his own account, can we track he is the SUSPECT?  The TIME of access from airport's wifi server records, the approximate location from knowing which base station, the CCTV showing everyone in that location, then you follow them around and see if they got on a plane, or left the airport in a car or on a bus, etc, zoom in and with luck you have a picture of their face, also you have the laptop MAC address... maybe it won't lead the police to him, but when they GET a suspect, they've got evidence to add to what they already know. The police don't just use the internet to catch people, they use old-fashioned police work.

A murderer ? ?

He'll be caught.I think using a murderer is a BIT controversial.

So let's say a hacker. Who hacks into someone's account or some sensitive website. We can know he is hacking from the airport. And from the CCTV, there could be many other people accessing the internet at the same time. So how can we know who is the suspect?

Solve : Connected tv to pc and now no sound.?

Answer»

We connected our Compac PC to our Vizio TV and now we have no sound. We have Windows VISTA for our OSHow was it hooked up?
If you used HDMI you will have to select your output on the sound card to go to the detected DIGITAL device.

if you used some other method let me know and I'll try and ts it for you.Honestly I am not sure we plugged in whatever was used to connect the monitor. Unfortunately I am at work and won't be home until 5 cst. I am assuming its not connected with HDMI, but could be wrong. Will check tonight when I get home.If it is the often used VGA CONNECTION cable then you will need a separate sound cable for input of audio, truenorthThe sound works intermittently and us connected by typical cord believe it says rgb. When computer is logged off no sound comes from tv either. Please don't make it so hard to help you.Is this your cable?
http://www.ehow.com/about_5098860_rgb-cable.html
If you don't know what kind of cable you have used do some research (Google for instance) so when a question is asked you can give an accurate response. Or take a picture and post it in this thread.truenorthtruenorth, dont make me sound like an idiot. I was working on this at midnight while my husband was asleep, took it upon myself to figure it out on my own. Yes that is the cable and I realize it probably isnt the right way to do it, just wanted  it up and running for the kids. We both work full time and have 4 kids and life to tend to so, while I want this to work, it isnt high on my to do list. We have an HDMI cable, but our pc is older and doesnt have an HDMI port, I dont want to spend 40 or more dollars for a usb/hdmi convertor if I dont have to. Can i do it without, or will it be best to just hook up speakers to the computer and be done with it.Actually any effort (implied) to make you look like an idiot was NOT my intention. My intention was and remains to try and help you with your issue as completely and expeditiously as possible. Often it becomes necessary to  get more (and hopefully accurate ) information from the poster. That was the case here.I SUGGEST to you that a VGA (for the video) which should be common to both the computer and the tv and then probably a stereo mini plug (computer end) and unless the tv has a mini stereo input female jack at the other end for the tv a red/white rca plug for the audio. If you can elaborate on all the output (computer) and input (tv) jack options you have AVAILABLE perhaps other options will become available. The way i have suggested is a very inexpensive way of achieving your goal. Please remember you can see your equipment we cannot. So the more you can tell us the better.truenoth

When posting make sure to keep the below guidelines in mind.

List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc.
Post in the appropriate forum. Do not start a THREAD in "Programming" if you need help with a specific program. That would go in "Software". If you post in the DOS forum please specify if it is "real DOS" and what version or some sort of Command Prompt from with Windows, and what version of Windows. There are differences some subtle, and some very important. These tips ensure that the people most likely to help will see your posts.
Don't "hijack" someone else's thread. Though you problem may sound similar it is a rude practice and the real issues and solutions may be very different. Click on "Start New Subject".
Make sure to click the Spell Check button before posting your question or reply.
Use an intelligent title. "Help Me Now" is not as likely to get you help from the appropriate people as quickly as "Smoke Coming From Power Supply"
Do not make multiple posts in different areas for the same issue. That merely confuses things and they will probably be deleted.
Be as thorough as possible with your description of your problem. What happens exactly, error messages, if any, what happened before this started, what you have tried, are you the only user, type of internet connection, what you have done inside the case, etc.
Keep your computer safe. Use the suggested FREE spyware/adware/antivirus programs. Click here for a great post listing these programs.
Realize that this is a volunteer forum. Don't expect instant solutions to all of your problems or be abusive to those who try to help. We donate our time as we can. If you want to pay $75+ an hour for support, there are plenty of repair SHOPS that can and will take your money.  We cannot see your machine. We can only suggest based on the pertinent data you post. Again, more is better. Too little is pointless.
If you have some solutions, register and help others.  Unlike many "Help Boards", we welcome input from well informed and well experienced members, not just moderators.
Don't post messages with any personal information such as personal e-mail address, home address, phone number, credit card information, etc. All posts can be viewed by anyone or anything visiting the forums.
You cannot give too much information. about the system. Withholding information seldom solves a problem quickly, if at all. Please don't expect us to drag information out of YOU to solve YOUR problem.
We do not help with cd-keys, cracks, and warez. This is not negotiable.
We try not to help with homework. If this is what you are after, please at least be honest and don't try to hide the purpose for the question. Honesty sometimes gets results!
It is OK to use the PM feature to contact a member about a specific question, but don't expect a response, unless you have already established that relationship. Our expertise is displayed in the forums to help everyone.
Finally, if a suggested fix works or you resolve it some other way, PLEASE post back to let other users know its a tested solution.

Without knowing any more about your specific system or situation, here are some steps you can take to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or backup the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

 1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:
start - run - regedit
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management]

Set ClearPageFileAtShutdown value to 0

2) Start - Run - Regedit
Navigate to the following Registry key:
HKEY CURRENT USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Double click on the AutoEndTasks entry and replace the 0 with a 1 in the Value data text box

For the next two, if the dword value indicated does not exist, create it:

Double click on the WaitToKillAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 2000

Double click on the HungAppTimeout entry in the right pane and change the Value data to 1000

Reboot

3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control
Right-click on WaitToKillServiceTimeout and change it to 2000

Without knowing any more about your specific system or situation, here are some steps you can take to try to speed up Windows Shutdown. Before editing the registry, be sure to either create an image of your system partition or backup the registry. If you don't know how, please ask.

 1) Make sure "clear pagefile at shutdown" is not enabled:

How do I do this please?

Solve : STACK OVER FLOW AT LINE ZERO?

Answer»

Does any one know how to eliminate the box that appears when in I read my e-mails that reads Stack Over Flow At Line 0. I have Script Disabled checked in the advanced tab in Internet options. That didn't help.1. When did you last do a virus scan?
2. What operating system (e.g. XP, Windows 7)
3. Is this in a browser or an email app?
4. What has changed before you started getting this problem?

This occurs only when I am in e-mail MODE.  My O. S . is XP.  I have run a virus, malware and registry error scans since this started happening. Quote from: Eddie B on June 23, 2012, 06:04:35 AM

This occurs only when I am in e-mail mode.

Does this mean an email program such as Outlook or Outlook Express or accessing webmail (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo etc) in a browser?

When I click on a e-mail that I want to read, a box pops up that states MESSAGE FROM THE WEB PAGE.... STACK OVERFLOW AT LINE ZERO.... there is a triangle with a exclamation mark on the left side of the box.  also a place to click OK and an X to close.  This dialog box will also appear when I click on to one of my folders saved. I am using outlook express.Outlook Express uses parts of Internet Explorer. Have you done this?

Open Internet Explorer then go to  Tools, Internet Options, Advanced Tab. Check 'Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)', uncheck 'Display a notification about every script error'. Apply, OK, OK. Close Internet Explorer.

Thanks for the suggestion. however, been there done that,  still same problem.Have you done this?

1. In Outlook Express, go to Tools | Options, and select the Security tab.
2. Enable the Restricted Sites Zone (More Secure) option.
3. Go to Start | Control Panel, and double-click the Internet Options applet.
4. On the Security tab, click the Custom Level button.
5. Under SCRIPTING, select Disable under the ACTIVE Scripting heading. That may have solved the problem.  Time will tell. I will keep you informed.  Many thanksnot sure if above steps eliminated my stack overflow problem. When I perform step 5 above and select disable, in the active scripting heading, I am not able to get into my ATT / Yahoo
e-mail  pages. When I sign in all I get is a BLANK page with POST written in the upper left corner.

Solve : New Computer or Clean Old One??

Answer»

My 4 year old is great. Or was. I have had 6 or 7 computers going back into the 1980's. (Commodore 64/QuantumLink).
I need to find a person that can help me either clean the old or buy a new one. I usually just went into store and bought one. But I find that it either wasn't what I needed or what I really wanted!
I am disabled. But I take lots of pictures. Before injuries. I played many instruments. Some session work. So I LOVE music. I have Rhapsody and have thousands and thousands of songs on the computer. I GUESS that's a storage issue. (I'm really not 100% on how to do that).
I have icons filling up my DISPLAY page. Many things that can be deleted. But about 10 YEARS ago an tech told me I could delete a lot of files. These were files that shouldn't have ever been deleted. Compaq sent me all that software that belonged back on the computer and a few other things!
Because of great leaps in computers every other day. I assume a new tower would be best. If I do that how simple or difficult is it to use BOTH computers on the new one. Or share monitor?
Please send e-mail if possible.
Sorry but I need many answers. Being disabled makes leaving difficult for me.I don't know if it's just me, but I had a hard time understanding exactly what it is you wanted to do. Your post is kind of all over the place. What do you want to do exactly?

It would be helpful if you could
Tell us how many computers we're talking about here.
Tell us the brand and model of the computer(s)
Tell us which version of windows and service packs you're running on the computer(s).
Tell us the capacity and free space on the hard drive(s)
Tell us what virus protection you have.
Tell us what error messages (if any) you're getting.
Tell us in detail what it is you're wanting to do exactly

You cannot give too much information about the system. Withholding information seldom solves a problem quickly, if at all.

And remember don't post messages with any personal information such as personal e-mail address, home address, phone number, credit card information, etc. All posts can be viewed by anyone or anything visiting the forums. Also, give some information about your disability without getting too personal. My problem is mostly low vision and plus old age.
What helps me is having two monitors.

As for too many icons, you can create new folders on you desktop and drag  and drop LESS used icons into the folders. I also change the icons for the folders so I can spot them even when the words are not in focus. (Beyond 18 inches my high power eye glasses can not focus.)

Also, VOICE recognition is now part of Windows 7. Not perfect, but it helps. My advice  is no get a refurbished computer with Windows 7 Home Premium. You already have a good monitor, -Right? Refurbished computers with dual core and one TB drive and Windows 7 go for about $250 with a one-year warranty.

IMHO, cutting edge PCs offer little for disabled persons. Any computer that was  very good two or three years ago is still a good deal if it has a warranty.

The AMD-E is a good CPU. The 1 TB drive can hold a lot of music.
Refurb PCs are also on Amazon and New egg.Cleaning up the desktop and file system of an older machine is always a better idea than buying a new one. At the very least you should do the former before doing the latter.

FWIW my desktop computer is almost 4 years old and still works fine.

A vast number of programs are not reliant on the installer to setup the environment for the program to work. It depends, of course, on the program, but many can simply have their folder copied and work just fine. It's also possible that he simply moved the installer.

elliott4637As to whether or not the named toner cartridge can be used instead of the other one that was in it a call to where ever you purchased it should be able to answer that for you. Or a Google search on the laser printer model should tell you what cartridge(s) are COMPATIBLE. However i am including a link to an alternative choice which is to refill the original cartridge (my research on your behalf seems to imply that that is a very easy and less costly approach to buying a new replacement). You MIGHT wish to consider that option.

As ST has pointed out there are both. However in my case i was referring to the lazer toner but in fact if it is an inkjet refilling would also be an option.truenorth

Solve : Computer screen blinks and flashes, loses portions of web pages?

Answer»

I have been having a very bizarre and frustrating ISSUE with my computer for at least one year.  At least once or TWICE a day, the screen will blink, flash, or however you want to refer to it, and parts of web pages will disappear and become unresponsive.  I then have to restart the system to "clear" it, or WHATEVER it does for it.  This strange behavior also occurs with my laptop, so I know it's not just an issue with my PC.  I swapped out my modem several months ago, but that didn't resolve anything.  My ISP sent a technician to my residence last week, and he installed new cables, connections, etc. but it still hasn't resolved anything.  The tech suggested that if that didn't resolve my issues, that it could be something in my home electrical system that is causing it.  What is your opinion on this strange issue?  Could it be something in my home electrical that is causing it?  Should I have my electrical system tested for shorts or interference?      Thanks for any insight anyone can offer into this strange behavior.  I am at a loss as to what to try next.Seeing as you have a portable laptop take it to another location where a KNOWN wifi service is available and see if it performs properly in regards to the issues you are having at home. truenorth This sounds like a PROBLEM with the Graphics Card.Tried running in safemode yet?Not impossible but would be quite a coincidence. Solve : Shame on Mozilla?

I have by choice resisted upgrading to the newest ver. of Firefox for 3 reasons...
A) I was happy with the VERSION i had...
B) I had tested 3 editions of the newest on another build and decided to stand pat....
C) It was comfortable the way it was...

After putting up with the daily nag screens...which weren't a big deal to me saying ask later/no all of a sudden on boot-up today everyhting was changed...different theme/addons...etc.

Needless to say i was a bit miffed they could actually jam this down my throat because they decided on their own it was BEST for me.

I'm now in the process of backing up my Profile and having to uninstall Firefox and re-install the ver. i want from Oldapps...
I just think it's kinda carpy i have to do all this just because they did what they did.

No ...i'm not changing browsers for those who will probably be suggesting that...i just think it's wrong for them to conduct things in this manner.....

End of Rant.I felt the same at first patio, but I am using the latest version and have it configured so it essentially looks and works like 3.6. The biggest boon is a theme named Firefox 3 for Firefox 4+ (it was recommend by ST and it's perfect - you should give it a try before uninstalling)Don't make changes to my PC without my consent....Period.On Linux it never updates on it's own. It may not be that cut and dry for the FF 3 faithful.

Old article but it gives some insight on how Mozilla is willing to take updating into their own hands if they think they need to.

Quote
Computerworld - Mozilla plans to push 12 million users of the aged Firefox 3.5 to a newer version next month by taking the UNPRECEDENTED step of automatically upgrading their browser.

Quote
While it will continue to "dangle the carrot" of Firefox 4 to those users -- Mozilla started offering an upgrade to Firefox 4 to people running Firefox 3.5 and Firefox 3.6 last week -- it will "force 3.6 on 3.5 stragglers not choosing to update to Firefox 4 or 3.6 (give them the stick)," wrote Christian Legnitto, the Firefox release manager, in a message posted to a developer mailing list.

The argument is always the same. Outdated, unsupported browsers have big security holes in them. Mozilla wants to keep you safe but if you are an above average web surfer then I won't try preaching to you as I know you are more than qualified to USE any "dangerous" browser out there and keep out of trouble.

For everyone else though... Update *censored*!

Not sure of how powerful it is but it might be what you're looking for. http://www.updatefreezer.orgHave been dealing with an annoying problem since one of the last 2 Sea Monkey updates. It occurs on the CH page when i place the cursor over the "Posts" tab and display the drop down menu even though "replies to your posts" option appears if i slide my cursor down to it the whole list of options disappears. This happens about 80-90% of the time and can only be overcome by opening some other tab and then the option list under "Posts" will remain and i can then access and OPEN it. Does not occur on the same computer using IE 8 or on another computer that has Opera. truenorthFrankly, I dumped FireFox a while ago.
Version whatever-we-are-at-now sucks. It is slow, crashes a lot, and just isn't that great.
It pushed me over to Google Chrome which I love. Chrome is lightweight and easy to use, and is very customizable with extensions and themes like Firefox was.

I completely get what you mean, Patio. There are very few programs that I care to allow to update themselves -- not even Windows makes that list. Prompt me about it and let me know there is a new version, I'll take care of it when I feel like it. I switched from Internet Explorer to Firefox way back, must be 6 years ago, version 1.5 dot something, and I have always found it very stable. There have been some issues with Flash crashing recently but other than that I've always been happy. I don't really like Chrome.

This is an interesting article. Has some very good points.

Based on the IE version.

But i guess the only point of my mini-rant was that someone else can decide what's good for the User when ultimately that should be left up strictly to the User...If I was you, I would learn assembly language and mix the new version to the old one: The new version's internals and the old one's cockpit.

Solve : Highlight function on eBay?

Answer»

I'm not sure this is the right forum but . . when I re-list one of my auctions on eBay the highlight function will not work for me when I want to change the font, color, boldness and size of the text in the auction after half way down through the text section.  From the top down to half way I have no problem.   I called eBay's tech support and he had no problem highlighting my re-listing.  He claims my system is at fault.  The problem has only occurred for about the last 2 months.  I haven't changed anything that I know of because I wouldn't know how, being a rookie.  Any ideas from you experts? Thx, Micromos   Good evening micromos

If i reading your post correct.

The 1st listing is fine and it can be edited, listed etc with no issues? It is just when you go to re-list the auction and from 1/2 way down the page is when you have the issue?

All other web pages, documents etc all are OK?

What browser are you using to do your listings IE, FF (firefox), Chrome etc

Out of curiosity have you done any scans with your AV (antivirus) and if that COMES clean nothing comes up from your AV if you wish I would recommend downloading "malwarebytes" they do have a free & paid versions the free works great don't worry. You can get it from here when you are the web page scroll down a little and look for the malwarebytes and to the right is the green "download" button.

HOPE to hear from you soon, Mike

[07/28/2012 12:50pm Edited by Zylstra to correct a page formatting error - the URL was causing the post to run over the regular page width]
You are correct.  This problem only occurs during a relisting of an auction where I try to EDIT some text.  I can highlight the upper portion of the text and change it but when I get to a lower area the highlight will not work. I can type and delete the lower text but not change the color, size, font, underline etc.  This only started approx. 2 months ago when I NOTICED it.
My AV is set to start upon computer start up.  I have not recently manual ACTIVATE the scan until today (as I type this).  I use the IE browser because I didn't like the way Firefox's screen was set up in the past.  I may check it out in the future.   All other web pages and documents seem fine.
I will run malwarebytes after the scan is finsihed.  Thx Micromos

I'd be very skeptical of a hosting service priced at $1 per month, if I'm serious about publishing a website.  And, as the article says, do not register your domain name through these hosting services.  Use a domain name registrar such as godaddy.com.

Solve : Top Andoid Tabs < $200?

Yeah, a cheap one foes for $99 at radio Shack.
But what about the top-of-the-line?
Now you can get a great Android under $200 in USA. And other places.

Prices on tablets have recently dropped quite a bit, and now you can buy a tablet for under $200 that WORKS quite well. So if your buying price point is at or below 200 dollars, now MIGHT be just the right time to buy.
These tablets are a great way to surf the web, PLAY games, watch videos, listen to music, and more. I've selected these tablets based on features and customer reviews.

Andoid?

When buying an Android tablet try to be sure that it will be eligible for future updates to the Android OS. That is if you care to have them. Many phones and tablets still have not gotten and LIKELY may never even see ICS. Even the brand new ones that are high dollar may not get ICS and if they do it may be a long time coming.Good evening evilfantasy

Will if I could give my 2 cent's

If you are looking for a tablet like 7" or so If you can I would spend about 40-50 dollars more so around me they go for 240 -250 for a galaxy tab2 7" I bought one a few months ago and I love it and it has ICS I love the new OS.

If you are looking for a nice cell the galaxy s2 is real nice my daughter bout one. It as 130 or 150. Sweet unit.

Well hopefully this helps you, Mike  I'd take a look at the 'Astro' range of tablets.

http://www.ebuyer.com/search?q=astro&x=0&y=0

I think the pricing's in a different currency .... but look these up on NewEgg or something.

I've used them, and compared the 7" one to the HTC FLyer and Nexus 7.
About the same sort of speed as the HTC, but not as fast as the Nexus.

Actually, not knowing US pricing, can you pick up a Nexus 7 for <$200 ?

Solve : how to make a secure folder to use online?

Answer»

I want to create a PW protected folder where I can put sensitive information and have it stored in my GMAIL account. That way I can access it anywhere with just the PW. I tried using a program called KeepPass but you have to have that program on your PC to open it. I looked at creating a batch file from online HELP but that doesn't seem secure.
What are the option without buying some software . I only want to create one file to protect.

ThanksFirst, have you already read this very carefully?
https://drive.google.com/start#home

IMHO, we are better off working with companies that have a presence and reputation already established. Yes, innovation is important, but security is not a new idea. Very good security is already available without the need for even more third party software.

I have never heard of the company you mention. The KeePass is not a company. It's a piece of  open source software: http://keepass.info/. I use online storage for my business. I was just hoping there was a very simple method that I could use for one file.

Thanks for your adviceThanks for the link.
You are right, it is an open source software product, not a company. It is a password manager. It is not an encryption program, as far as I can tell.

To protect a single file, there are two things that come to mind
1. Restrict any use of the file with a password.
2. Encrypt the contents of a file so it is not readable.

The first item above is too easy to circumvent. Somewhere, somehow there  can be  somebody with the ability to get in anyway.
The second item can be as secure as you need it. Keys over 64 bits at nearly imposable to crack. Well, not impossible, but very hard. You do the encryption and decryption locally. On the Internet or on a server is is fully encrypted.

A well-known program is called PGP, but nit is rather pricy. You can find open source free encryption programs or other free programs that do about the same thing.

Here is an encryption program already in Windows.

How to encrypt a file in Windows XP

But that DOES NOT serve your purpose. It does not ALLOW transport of the file. So it is lame. What you want is a thug the encrypts a file and yet allows transport.

Here is a page that does a better job of explaining your options.
http://www.ehow.com/encrypt-files/

Quote

How to Encrypt a File or Folder on 7-Zip

The free and open-source 7-Zip utility allows you to copy files or folders into a compressed file, which typically allows you to conserve storage space. Another benefit is the ability to encrypt the compressed file. Once encrypted, only someone possessing the correct password or pass phrase is allowed access to the file. Although 7-Zip offers several archive types, using the ZIP format will allows you to view the contents in Windows 7, but you won't be able to extract the contents without a dedicated extraction program, such as 7-Zip.
This maybe just want you need.
http://7-zip.org/

Thanks again for the help. I will look into these options. If I encrypt a file with any of these methods wouldn't I have to have something that would decode them on the pc ? I MADE a  7-Zip file and downloaded it, but in order to open it I need to have 7 Zip on my pc right? What would happen if I didn't have that program or any of the other ones suggested in that article?  I am assuming I will not have any of these on a pc that i would be using, what are my options then?

Thanks
7-Zip is a very small file. You could carry it on a very small USB drive. Or you can always download it.
The alternative is to use whatever encryption is offered by your server.
The industry is going toward 'on the fly' encryption services for on-line storage. Here is a article that gives a general outline of what is involved.
http://www.extremetech.com/extreme/126723-reliable-encryption-is-essential-to-the-future-of-the-cloud

Likely Google does, or will, offer some kind of method where you can get you data anywhere with just the key. The encryption key can be a phrase or sequence of letters and numbers. Longer the better.

The NAB has more influence that is should have. IMHO. And yes, I have worked a bit in broadcasting years ago. The broadcast industry puts its own ideas ahead of the public interest, logic and progress.

It is LOGICAL and in the public interest to improve the use of available spectrum space.  We are not speaking  here about spectrum used by military, police, fire aviation and safety. This is wasted space now more available after the TV stations went digital.

The weak reasoning the NAB had was based on nth old analog technology. The TV stations now have more spectrum than they know how to use. HD is not justified on old re-runs of 'I Love Lucy' or 'Leave it to Beaver' and other non HD TV shows. So by FCC rules, they have to either use the bandwidth or not use it. They can not just TRANSMIT a test pattern to hold the space for themselves. Those days are gone.
Under the FCC rules, when a station goes off the air, a non-licensed transponder can be used for wide area hotspots.

The real threat to commercial development is the fear that the rules will change again. And gain.

In Britain that are also doing tests with 'white space' Wi-Fi.

You might be able to use a VGA to HDMI cable. The PROBLEM is VGA signals are analog, whilst HDMI is digital.
Not 100% it will work with a simple cable.

You need to ask your friend how he got it to work with no RAM.
There is no one in this forum that uses a OS that runs without RAM.
We want to know.He said that it was operating on the 1gig internal memory. All I know is that without the memory card (I guess) it works like a charm. I want to know why it freezes and auto reboots (randomly) with the memory card () installed so that I can put it back. Can someone please help me???Does the hp mini 311-1037nr have a slot for an extra ram stick? Maybe that is what I replaced and what he is talking about.Use the old RAM modules and the new ones. Swap alternately on AVAILABLE slots as there might be a broken slot, just in case. Make sure you have the correct RAM modules.Sorry, I misunderstood.
The laptop has built-in memory. Somewhere I saw it is 1 GB.
Maybe something is wrong with the slot. Is it still under WARRANTY?

I don't KNOW the internal workings of how the DEVICES interface with the system but it seems like somewhere down the line the value is being formatted with decimals.I find it hard to believe any modern storage device uses fractions of a byte...

Solve : How to remove a website which is made by 3rd party?

Answer»

Hello All,

I am a new member in this community.

Need help.

Earlier I was running a business which didn't run well, I made a web for the same but now I am looking for a job and I don't want my business website to appear on web.

3rd party made that website for me, now the 3rd party is ALSO not existing and cannot ask them to remove my website from their end but it still comes under the search under their hosting and can be viewed. I want if 3rd party hosting thing doesn't appear online and my web also don't appear online.

I will highly appreciate the response and solution.

Kind regards
TanuSo, you're saying the " 3rd party is also not existing", yet they are still operating a hosting service.  Is that right?  If they are still operating a hosting service, then they still exist.  What ELSE can we conclude?

If this 3rd party has, indeed, gone out of business, I suspect they did not REALLY run their own web servers for web hosting; they may have conveyed the IMPRESSION to their clients that they provided hosting but they may have actually used an independent hosting service for "their" hosting.  Do you follow what I'm saying?

I would try using http://www.whois.com/ to confirm who the actual hosting service is.  If it's someone other than your 3rd party web developer, then you may be able to contact that hosting service and gain control of your website or just request the site be shut down.

Solve : Pc freeze during XP setup.?

Answer»

Before I loaded the software in another machine and then installed the DRIVE in this one. As soon as the desktop comes up the Pc freezes and yet - in safe mode it works like a charm.

Laptop Proline M760S (Thank you Mike for the drivers) Originally came out with Vista.

Loading WINDOWS XP Pro SP2

It was suggested I try load Xp on the laptop itself. It was a mission because the DVD Drive was non FUNCTIONAL but I managed with a USB Flashdisk.

Now it freezes during setup the moment we get to the part where the user has to put prefferences in. When i do it fast I can get as far as where it asks for the key CODE and then it freezes on me before I can type it in..

So something tells me the windows XP generc drivers are conflicting somewhere. Is there a way around this?
I believe that if I can get the Manufacturer SPECIFIC drivers on for XP it should work.

Thank you guys for your support on my previous issue.

You cannot install Windows on one machine, move the drive to a different machine, and expect it to work. The OS needs to be installed on the system where it will be used.Yes you told me so before. Quote

"It was suggested I try load XP on the laptop itself."
In my experience it has never happened but just to be sure I -  let me quote. Quote
"I managed with a USB Flashdisk."
to load it on the machine in question. Same results roughly.

It loaded well the first time dumping the data on the drive and the second time round it ran setup as if I had a cd in. The rest is what happened.

Now it freezes during setup the moment we get to the part where the user has to put language preferences in. When i do it fast I can get as far as where it asks for the key code and then it freezes on me before I can type it in.
Either the windows generic drivers causes conflict with the hardware OR there is some hardware failure but for some reason it works in Safe mode.
So this is a continuation of another thread? Please do not start multiple threads on the same topic. As you can see it simply caused confusion and a duplication of efforts. I'm locking this thread. Please continue the conversation in the other one.

Solve : Loading XP on an old Vista Laptop?

Answer»

Ok here is a long story. Let me try condense it.

Proline M760s Cannot find chipset information  or drivers for it anywhere. I think it has a SIS chipset.

DVD Rom not working.

So I took the Hard drive out and loaded windows XP pro SP2  in another machine. Then installed it in this one again.

In safe mode it works fine but In realmode it freezes within a minute. I can install USB wireless internet to get the drivers if only I can get it to stop freezing. I don't know what is causing the freezing and when I quickly open Program manager I see that there is no overload of memory or CPU.

I can go in on safemode and see in event manager what the last functions were before it froze and try disable it. That is my plan so far.

I also tried this on another machine for an installation. Same results. This is my second installation on that drive.

In event manager I get this. Was wondering which one it could be?

Service control manager. The following BOOT-start drivers failed to load.
AFD
Fips
intelppm
IPSec
MRxSMB
NetBIOS
RasAcd
Rdbss
Tcpip.

You cannot take a drive with Windows installed from one system, put it in another, and expect it to work. You need to install Windows on the system you are going to use.I did it many times before on problems like these and then just afterwards loaded the right chpset and device drivers.

This is the first time I get this problem but it makes sense that windows may load an inappropriate generic driver.

I tried to load it from a flashdisk before and ran into a snag.

Alternatively I can Load the windows disc into the second partition and run setup from there. It USED to work with win98 I haven't done it with XP yet.Aside from the fact you would be in violation of the EULA, XP is not 98. During installation XP makes note of the existing hardware and stores it in the wpa.dbl file. Upon boot, it checks that file against the hardware on the system. Are there ways around it? Yes. But nothing we can discuss here. Thanks Alan

I don't care much for violation of the EULA. I paid for it and I have many legal Liscense keys that my clients buy from me so in effect they pay for it. So if anyone knocks on my door I have ENOUGH legal copies of anything.

My problem like I said before is that I am trying to load a Laptop that does not have a working CD Drive. Therefore I must find another way to get the operating system on the HDD. I don't believe Microsoft is petty enough to have a problem with that.

Right now I am trying to build a bootable flash disk with the disc contents on it.Good morning Eugene66

You can email the company here to get the drivers [email protected]
Here is SIS web site if you want to try them but you really should get them from proline http://www.sis.com/single_page_session/page.aspx?region=en-global&m=624&rsn=119

My self just to avoid any issues with EULA / installation issues & my time that I would invest I would just replace the DVD drive. Just REMOVE the DVD drive and look for the part number and then do a google search. Most DVD drives are about 40+ dollars

I do not know if your your laptop supports the option of USB booting like thumb drives. Maybe if does support USB booting it may boot to a external DVD drive?

The way you are trying to accomplish to install the OS seems so much harder than it has to be not to mention the possible issues with the OS and EULA violations etc.

Plus XP is almost at the end of it's life & it should happen on "Windows XP 4/8/2014" but that date may only be for corporate editions that includes some companies / corporations & I think this will cover home users / end users also. But this date has changed many times & may change again. Something to keep in mind

Well I hope this helps you, Mike   Good evening Eugene66

I just found the drivers for XP on that model at the web site http://www.proline.co.za/Product/SearchDrivers.aspx then click on ANYWHERE then click on your model M760S then there is two options 1 for Win7 and one for XP when you click on XP look to the left and the drivers are there.

I hope this is what you are looking for, Mike Thanks a a lot Mike. I got therm at last. I marked this solved and opened another thread for the freezing but it seems I don't know how this forum works well enough yet. So lets then just continue under the old topic shall we?

Now after I loaded windows on the laptop itself with a USB flashdisk HALFWAY through setup where it asks for launguage prefferences it freezes again.

I tried to boot it in safe mode and I got a blue screen saying my Video drivers are faulty. But they are generic windows drivers? How come it worked in safe mode when I loaded the operating system on another machine and then installed the hard disk in this one, but when I load it on this one direct it does not even want to work in safe mode?

Solve : Changeable Laptop CPU?

Answer»

So, I researched about changing a laptops CPU. Every forum, blog, article state that 99% of laptops processors cannot be changeable. This is because most are stuck onto the motherboard with some sort of glue.
HOWEVER............
Every laptop I have looked at including HP Pavilion, HP G62, Sony Vaio, Acer, Dell and more do have changeable CPU's?

The GPU is not changeable as its glued in. Only some laptops (Dell) allow a changeable GPU but 99% of laptops do not due to the graphics is integrated onto the mainboard.

Now tell me if I'm wrong here but all the laptops I have seen and done do have changeable processors and SUPPORTS a higher processor speed. Let me give you an example; HP Pavilion DV6500, AMD Turion 1.6GHz, upgraded to AMD Turion 2.3Ghz and works fine! Socket S1 was the processor slot!

So, the thing I am getting a bit mad about is that most computer knowledge people are giving wrong advise!

If you think I am telling porkies about this, find a laptop model (maybe yours), ebay or google your motherboard model (model name by using CPUID) and tell me if your motherboard doesn't have a changeable processor!

This will be very interesting

Just to add: The processor slot is only in by a screw holder. Meaning you just rotate the screw to release the CPU!In all the Laptop CPU's I have dealt with, they are easily removable. I even upgraded my 600Mhz Pentium III Dell to 1Ghz PIII with no troubles. Others I have dealt with were Toshiba's where I grabbed the faster CPU out of a dead unit with main board issues and INSTALLED that faster CPU into the slower, but good running laptop such as Pentium M's and Core 2 Duo's. I haven't dug into a modern laptop yet as for I haven't had a need to remove the CPU yet. I only assume that it should be easy to remove or upgrade.

As far as GPU's go though, all laptops I have dealt with were integrated GPU's soldered directly to the main boards so your stuck with say a 16MB ATI Radeon graphics limitation. There are laptops out there that are higher end that support GPU upgrades, but i havent had the luxury to own one yet. Its too bad they didnt socket the GPU and have some sort of conformity between say Intel, nVidia, and AMD/ATI so that you could swap and install better as well as replace them easily when they get overheated and damaged. I have a Toshiba Qosmio that has a cooked GPU, and its a shame because its a nice laptop, but the display has hairlines and pixelates and I know its the GPU because even the VGA out has the same ISSUE when it heats up.Good morning ShaneTFletcher and welcome back to CH

Yes most sites will tell you that the laptop CPU's are not upgradable / changeable that is not totally 100% true "So, I researched about changing a laptops CPU. Every forum, blog, article state that 99% of laptops processors cannot be changeable. This is because most are stuck onto the motherboard with some sort of glue." Yes some laptops CPU's are soldered (not glued) into the motherboard and some are held in place in a CPU socket when any type of glue is used on the corners to help hold them down as the CPU heats up. The problem with making this change is finding what CPU options are out there for a certain PC. The major laptop companies are very tight lipped on upgrades when it come to CPU's.

But there are many variables to keep in mind even if the PC will run with a upgraded CPU. Will the heat sink cool unit properly, will the CPU fan be able to cool the faster CPU and this can also change the FSB speeds / CPU timings / Voltages and that will affect the memory settings too.

This too is kind of true but laptop and netbooks can have a zif socket or the CPU is soldered in place "
Every laptop I have looked at including HP Pavilion, HP G62, Sony Vaio, Acer, Dell and more do have changeable CPU's?" and this depends on the laptop model.

I can understand what you are saying here but what a lot of them are error in on the side of caution "So, the thing I am getting a bit mad about is that most computer knowledge people are giving wrong advise! with what information is available and the time spent on making that kind of drastic change if it does not work then it has to be R&R again to change it back if it doesn't work. Laptops are not as easy as most desktops.

This is not always true even if the CPU is in the same CPU chip family this is dependent on many things including the north & south bridge chipset's. But this is a good place to start to find out what CPU may be compatible "If you think I am telling porkies about this, find a laptop model (maybe yours), ebay or google your motherboard model (model name by using CPUID) and tell me if your motherboard doesn't have a changeable processor!"

Yes a lot of the laptops the GPU is soldered in place not glued these are called BGA (Ball grid array) "Only some laptops (Dell) allow a changeable GPU but 99% of laptops do not due to the graphics is integrated onto the mainboard" yes this kind is integrated / soldered If you see any glue that is on the corners to help hold them in-place for as the chip WARMS up and cools down because of chip creep. Dell laptops are not the only ones, Asus, HP, Alienware and a lot of other manufactures have upgradable video cards.

This is close but they are a zif (Zero insertion force) socket with a locking /actuator screw and not a slot the screw rotates the lock / actuator for removal & replacement of the CPU "Just to add: The processor slot is only in by a screw holder. Meaning you just rotate the screw to release the CPU!"

Long story short yes this can be done but there is a lot of variables to keep in mind when this kind of upgrade is done.

Hope this helps someone if they attempt to do this kind of upgrade. Mike   Yey, finally some real information!

Most question websites or forums will go "NOPE, the CPU is stuck onto the motherboard 99% of times".

Thank god for this forum and topic has come alight so people can read and see that laptop CPU's can be changed (if the CPU supports the motherboard).

Thanks guy's for commenting and bringing this topic to light.
