Solve : VERY problematic virus! Need a LOT of help!!?

Answer»

Hello, i have a very BIG problem on my laptop.  i ran the Norton Antivirus scan and found i had three trojan viruses.  they were called Black box, Verify, and Dummy, although i couldn't find any background on them.  They were quarantined and deleted.

a few days later, which was about two weeks ago, my computer reset itself and when it booted up, the logo and the words were distorted.   it would freeze after the logo in the beginning of booting up and it would REBOOT when i pressed any button.  I'm running Windows XP home, and when i go to set up, the Bios is messed up as well.  i tried running the Windows XP cd, but it would fail and when i would press any button ,it would reboot again.  i made emergency disks and a boot disk but they did nothing.

i've tried running it on SAFE mode, on dos, last known safe check point, etc, but it just reboots itself when i press any button.  I've tried power drains, REMOVING battery pack, just about everything and it remains.  i've spoken to tech support of my lap top, local technicians and friends that know about computer and they have been stumped.  the only option they've given me is a complete FORMAT, but i'm still holding off on that.  if anybody can help or any suggestiongs, PLEASE do so.  Thanks a lot!  Sounds like a hardware problem. Start with testing your memory. Memtest86 is free and runs from a bootable floppy. http://www.memtest86.com/

Solve : Cant log in...........?

Answer»

So heres my problem.  I'm running Windows XP Pro on my laptop and i WANTED to connect it to my desktop with a crossover cable.  So, i had to change the laptop from a domain to a workgroup.  I did that and it said that the change wouldnt be in affect until i restarted.  I restarted and when it came back up, no combination of username/password would work.  I cant log in to my own computer and i have work that i need to do.  Someone please help!  Thanks.
Try 'administrator' (assuming I spelled it right  ); that is a default ACCOUNT on most XP SYSTEMS. You may WANT to try a password reset tool you can download and put on bootable floppy; however, don't use if you have anything ENCRYPTED in Windows, and may have other warnings. This is a dark tip article from TV show The Screen Savers which can help you do this:

Hope this helps; good luck!

Solve : sound like ambulance(?iii...?ooo) appeared!!?

Answer»

hi all of you, i need help....
When i turn on the computer, it appears a SOUND something like ambulance, that is dii...doo... with continuous, and that MONITOR doesn't appear any screen.  I've check that CPU, nothing's placed at wrong places, nothing's loose.  That CPU fan also has functioned when i turn on.  So what's wrong??Is it that motherboard BAD??If English is not your first language then good work.  If it IS your first then shame on you.  I'm having a hard time figuring out what the simptoms are but this is what I've gathered so far.. your system makes a constant noise and the monitor won't show any screens.  Is that right?  Does the monitor show the ramcount and bios info?I had this problem after i moved my system to a new case.
The way i fixed it was to strip the whole thing down to just the essentials like PSU, motherboard, CPU, RAM, and motherboard speaker. Then tested it to see if it beeped normally. Once i got it beeping properly i put it back in the case and tested it again. Then i put all the rest of the bits back in and it worked.
However you may be able to fix the problem my re seating the RAM and AGP card.  your computer needs to go to a doctor or hospital thats prbbly its sounding like ambulance.

Solve : stolen modem?

Answer»

Hello there

I THINK an APPLICATION somehow has been downloaded to my computer that now has taken over the modem. When the modem diales there is a new username and a different password and there are also two different connectionsetups to use. They both have the same name but ONE ends with "_old". If I create a new connectionsetup that one gets duplicated with "_old" at the end.

So. If there is an unwanted application that has stolen my modem, how do I find it so that it can be erased?

Thank god you are around.

Mark
Sounds like a dialer, you should just be able to remove it by deleting it in the connections panel and then set you old one as default. Also you MIGHT want to run programs such as adaware and SPYBOT to find any spyware or other nasty programs.

Solve : lsass.exe-Access Denied- no logon?

Answer»

My PC is running Win XP Pro, after the Windows Xp loading SCREEN finishes, it then has a lsass.exe-access denied pop-up box where it states "A process has requested access to an object, but has not been granted those access rights." It only has the option of clicking OK. After clciking OK, the PC resets and restarts this endless loop. Running windows in Safe Mode and any other possible way, I have not been able to fix this. I would rather not Format C: if anyone knows a solution to fix this, I would appreciate it greatly, thanks. It seems LIKE a bit of a lengthy process but with the below LINK I THINK you can fix your problem.  Requires your win xp disk and a download explained in the link.  http://www.cgispy.com/boards/board.cgi?action=display&num=76&user=bosbo

Good Luck let us know how it turns out.

Solve : 8-10min boot-up HELP! Tried everything?!?!?

Answer»

Where do I start... My laptop is a Compaq Presario 1200 (AMD-K6 473Mhz, 156MB ram, Win XP Pro SP1)  Only days ago the whole computer was running at its greatest potential (which we know isn't much) until I made the mistake of a Windows Update.  Sounded innocent at the time.  Just another one of those Recomended Updates for SP1.  It downloaded all its files and such and began the installaion process 3/4 of they way through it said 'testing final configuration' and just locked up for a good hour.  I couldn't restart/logoff/shutdown so I held in the power button to kill it.  Waited a few moments and rebooted... Hard drive, cdrom etc initiated and then the HD started making odd noises similar to a defrag with lag. 12 minutes of blank screen finally Windows loaded.  Once in everything RUNS FINE just the boot process takes a good 8-10 min now Help!-tried clean boot
-tried safe mode
-tried scandisk
-tried defrag
-tried virus scanning
What am I missing? Can you boot to safe mode and uninstall the update from Add/Remove Programs from the Control Panel?

Regards
PeteI did in fact try that.  I went so far as removing all updates made in the past three month because nothing seemed to help.  FYI every update that was uninstalled forced me to restart windows.  And now I have gone back through windows update and replaced everything that was uninstalled. in the run box type msconfig and disabled some of the services if not all and also look in the start menu to see what is loading? tests you can try? Thanks for the idea!  Tried the diagnostic startup and then selective startup disabling all checks...  Forgot to mention I attempted windows recovery and magically of of the save points magically dissapeared.    The most confusing part of it all is that once up and running everything is fine... it's just the crazy booting.IM Still not getting any progress with the situation running out of options... sledge hammer hand twitching...Try re-installing windows.  and re-installing service pack one.  Uninstall your vius software FIRST.Windows XP repair installation guide:
http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=138Absolutely Ingenious I shall try this as soon as I can get ahold of my windows disk.  Thanks for the help!!! (I just moved back stateside from europe and all my disks are packed with the rest of my goods) Unless any one can think of something that doesnt require my disk I shall still be at a loss. winxp loads 98 programs that why is so slow?try unticking these>Alerter

Solve : Computer freezes/stops/locks up?

Answer»

Ok so i've had this problem for a year now. Haven't even used my computer in that year time span because of the problem.  It's a gateway. Back when the problem started,  i just restarted and it was fine. Day by day it got worse and worse and the more restarts it took to load up windows. Back in april 2003 it got to the point it would no longer load windows before crashing/lockup/freeze/stop. Screen would go black and noise from inside the computer would go off. This noise is located in the cpu area but i think that's just what it does because i've eliminated cpu and cpu fan as the cause of my problem ...

SOmetimes when you START it up, it'll lockup as soon as you let go of the button, before it ever reaches the Gateway/BIOS loadup screen....

I've eliminated(or so i thought) the following as cause of problem:

1)CPU fan
2)CPU(athlon 1.1)
3)HDD(perhaps i need to recheck this again but the other day i loaded up into windows just fine for 15 minutes. This was after installing athlon 1.1 and motherboard replacements) I then decided to test it, restarted, and problem came back.

4)Power supply(perhaps i need to recheck it)
5)graphics card(just bought new card, didn't fix problem)
6)took out sound and modem cards, problem remained without them in system.
7)floppy(unplugged it for testing)
8)Ram

I just don't know. I guess up next is trying a BRAND new hard drive and see what happens. I'm guessing i zapped something via ESD while fooling with it. Darn hard pinpointing the PROB.Random freeze-ups/reboots almost always point to a failing power supply. Should be able to get one online for $20 to $30.     Quote

Yeah, i just eliminated the HDD as problem by unplugging it from mobo and PS and the prob was still there. Gotta be PS.Ok so, i got new power supply and problem is still there. I just eliminated everything. Power supply, motherboard, cpu, cpu fan, vid card, sound card, modem, power button cord, front USB cord, HDD, IDE cables, floppy, and monitor/monitor cord. Oh and Mouse/keyboard. Soooooo LIKE.......shoot me, k?

System stripped to just PS, Mobo, ram, and Vid card, top four suspects, and they TURNED out fine, or atleast i assume. grrrrrrrrrr.....have you tried flashing the bios? what o/s is this?on boot up hit the del key and set the bios settings to default?I haven't tried flashing the bios, but currently am downloading update to try it. I have Windows XP with AMI bios.  In bios, i haven't really ever changed anything so everything should be at default.

Solve : HD Woes?

Answer»

Hi all,
Having some major problems trying to install a slave HD. Its a 41 GB IBMICL35L040AVER07-0.
BIOS sees it as slave,Dev Mngr sees it, but when it comes to formatting, it just don't wanna know, gets to about 2% then jumps back to 0%! Partition Manager 8 has been tried, and seemed to be able to create primary partition and format it no problem, but.............for some reason it doesnt see all of it. It only sees  32,000+Mb, where it should be up in the forties somewhere. That means that somewhere along the line, about 9 or so GB have been lost somewhere. I'm not a HD boffin, but surely thats a *censored* of a big section to be corrupt or damaged. Thought that might not be the case otherwise surely the disk would be unreadable? So on my numerous checks of it, I found a message somewhere that said that the disk contained a partial RAW filing system, as opposed to FAT32, NTFS etc. So at best so far I've had roughly 32 GB formatted to NTFS, and about 9GB formatted to GOD KNOWS WHAT! Lol.
Anyhow, the upshot of it all is that I cannot install an O/S (Win2000 Pro) on it, it gets as far in installation as copying the files needed for installation, then fails to boot-up after the first automatic re-start(DISK READ ERROR). Can anyone suggest how I can get rid of these RAW files so I can start afresh with a completely blank disk? Fdisk doesnt help at all cos the RAW files are unreadable by windows or DOS, therefore cannot be deleted or re-formatted. Maybe someone could suggest a disk(not data) recovery/repair program?
Sorry to sound long-winded(I know I am), but this doin my head right in! Grrr! Lol.
Thanks in advance. What OS are you actually using to attempt the format?  If you want to install an OS you should be in DOS.  I suggest running your current slave drive as the primary master(disconnect the other) and use a floppy boot disk with CD rom support/drivers to startup the computer.  Get to the C:\prompt and run fdisk to remove all the partitions (for info on fdisk print http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q255/8/67.asp&NoWebContent=1) and start with a clean slate.  If I am not mistaken NTFS is for WIN XP not Win 2000, you should stick with FAT32.  See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q255/8/67.asp&NoWebContent=1#1.
Once completed run a full Format withind dos you might have to reboot after fdisk.  After all that then attempt to install your new OS.  Good Luck if you need more assistance make another post or e-mail me.Thanks Detox,
Have tried alll that you have suggested already, to no avail, but will keep on trying all the same.
Yes, NTFS is for Win2000Pro, it is afterall built on NT. But I will try it again on FAT32. The problem seems not to be that I am  unable to format it, DOS and windows had that problem, but Partition Magic resolved it. It is that 9 or so GB seem to be missing because they have been formatted with a RAW filing system. I CANT remember exactly where I got that information, but I can DEFINITELY remember seeing it somewhere whilst tryin to install Win2000. I havent got a clue what RAW means, but it is making that section of the disk unreadable. This is why I asked if somebody could suggest any software to totally wipe the WHOLE(all 41 GB) disk clean, so then I could let Partition Magic do its stuff.
Thanks again,
Inzomniac2.Not trying to argue with you but from what I can tell Partition Magic is made to run within windows http://www.powerquest.com/partitionmagic/features.html.  I honestly dont trust it.
By using FDISK from dos it tells you stright up that once you remove any existing partitions all data on drive is lost.  Which should free your 9G.  After doing some searching on RAW Partitions online it seems to have some thing to do with LINUX and or UNIX and or Solaris and or Win NT server OS's.
http://dco-proxima.dco.pima.edu/oracle/hot/hot03.htm

Maybe you can better understand this web page than me maybe it can help.http://www.peg.com/techpapers/monographs/rawdisks/rawdisks.html
As far as removing this RAW what ever I am at a LOSS...sorryraw is read and write? >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;197667Hey, thanks Merlin. Sounds like we're partially there, but the problem of windows not even seeing apprx 8 or 9 GB of the drive still EXISTS. What I really would like to know is how the *censored* do I "wipe the slate clean"? In other words, I figure there must be a way of completely erasing everything off the hard disk, even a partition that neither Win2000 or DOS can see?  Is there any software you know of that can do this? Would appreciate any answers to this particular question. Got plenty of time to spend trying to resolve this problem, but alas, not alot of cash.
I also think Detox maybe right in his IDEA that it might have something to do with a LINUX or UNIX file system, so thanks to him too.
There has got to be some way round this, thats an awfully big section of the disk to be unreadable because of damage. I'm assuming this because 33GB or so can still be read, but I amstill not able to install WIN2000 on that partition, even when I use Partition Magic, which creates it as a Primary partition.try this >http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2812

Solve : Windows xp patch update?

Answer»

When I Connected to the internet with DSL I didn't have a firewall up and got blasted with virus and worms. I fixed the firewall and downloaded patches for xp. Since that time, any pages with java script will not load. I get a blank web page that says done. What can I do to fix this, I have also lost my restore program and cannot go back to before I added the patches.Simple JavaScripts should not be affected by your computers firewall. It is likely that your browser settings were changed to affect how your browser views JavaScripts.

I'm assuming you have Internet EXPLORER. If this is the case Click Tools / Internet Options / Under Security make sure your Security is currently medium and click the custom level and verify that all Java related items are "Enabled".
I have done all that and still my web pages will not load. I am on aol, and I am not sure if that has anything to do with it or not either. I have no IDEA if Java has anything to do with it or not, but everytime the screen says, java at the bottom, I get a blank web page. I am at a loss, and getting very aggravated with this. Thank you for your help. You could try going to Sun Microsystems and installing the latest JVM (Java Virtual Machine).  I seem to remember Microsoft had to do something with the java they included in Internet Explorer due to the ruling of a court case. You could try reinstalling Java... However, JavaScript and Java are two different things and are not associated with each other. But it definately wouldnt hurt to try. You can get Java from the below link.

http://java.com/en/index.jsp

Other then that unless SOMEONE else has additional recommendations I would RECOMMEND reinstalling your browser as it is likely a browser related issue.I also have windows xp and have no java software, I downloaded from Java.sun.com and it is on my desktop but windows INSTALLER seems unable to install it my freind is having the same problem.either repair ie 6 in add/remove program or this >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q168806  that ie 6 wants dumping or download firebird browser?

Solve : Hard Drive not found??

Answer»

I was on my PC last night and it froze so I shut it down and when I tried rebooting it, I got a error message that said "The hard drive can not be found"  I tried to troublshoot and I got this message, "A problem with the hard drive has been detected."  Then it would not START...

I have a Gateway PC with Windows ME.  I don't know a ton about computers, but I can USUALLY fix them.  This time, I have no clue what to do.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
AndyIt is likely that the computer is no longer detecting the hard DISK drive. We would recommend you check CMOS and verify that the hard disk drive is being seen. It is likely that it is not being seen in CMOS, if this is the case you could try disconnecting and reconnecting the hard disk drive data cable from the motherboard and hard drive and make sure the power cable is connected to the back of the hard drive.

If all connections look good and the drive is not being detected in CMOS, unfortunately it is likely that the drive is bad.

Solve : Cables for your PC?

Answer»

Hi,

Me again! As i said in my posts before i'm learning as much as i can about PC's ASAP. Im trying to learn about cables but i dont know where to start.. If anyone out there could point me to a site where there's a table saying

The *&$(£ Cable = connects to the *&*( and does &*($^£

Or better still write out a few EXPLANATIONS for me. Ive searched this site & ive found some information but not everything i need.

I dont wanna bother anyone but if you feel you could help me, i'd be ever so grateful

-Laura Are you not using a computer to ask these questions?  Walk around your desk and I bet you'll find some cables there and on one end will be a.. mouse, on the other.. a PS2 port ETC.  http://www.tigerdirect.com has a cables section too.If you are refering to internal components/wires, I was unable to find any specific pages.  But if you are REAL careful you can attempt to venture into your computer on your own.  With the case apart you can SEE what MAKES every thing tick.  Also thoroughly ready the documentation that came originally with you computer will provide a wealth of knowledge.  If you dont have it you can try to get it online.

Solve : Date changes for no reason?

Answer»

Hi.....Occassionaly the date will change on my puter...
It's a random THING 3 maybe 5 times in a year.
The p/c is 2 years old. O/S is Win XP Home. I considered the battery as a possible scource , but discounted as I rarely ever shutdown the computer. I regularly run :
Ad-Aware , PEST Patrol , SpyBot , System Mechanic and WinDoc. ( system runs very smooth) .....I use Norton 2004 A/V and Zone Alarm. I have recently reformatted and done a clean install of Win XP ( including all upgrades). While this problem isn't serious , I would like to know whats causing it .....LOL.
Does anyone have any ideas.
Thanking you all in advance,

dl65    First is it just a change in date or in time as well?  Is it possible you have the wrong region selected, or dayligt savings time option selected?  On that same note you can set Win to automatically adjust time settings via Internet time settings.  Just double click the time on the task bar and check all the settings.  Other than that I COULD only suggest a virus that is doing to throw your antvirus off guard.  When the incorrect date is displayed I know my MCAFEE was messed up and it REQUIRED a patch.  Let us know updates on situation.Hi Detox....
All that changes is the Date....( always 1 day forward)
the time remains correct. I have checked the settings and they are correct . I have unchecked the automatic
synchronization with the internet time server. ( we'll see if that has any effect.) Other than that I'm stumped.
Oh yes and to clarify , I just unchecked the internet time server. As far as a possible virus or trojan the system scans clean.

Cheers ,

dl65     Also you can check the time settings in the bios..maybe it needs upgrading

Solve : Slow Installation?

Answer»

For some reason everything I install on my laptop takes forever to complete.  For example, I download a windows update and it finishes downloading and says preparing to install but does NOTHING for five minutes or more.  If I wait long enough, the install will start and complete properly.

This happens on everything from windows updates to games to business software installed off a CD.

I am using Windows XP Professional on a P4 2.4 GHz machine with 256MB RAM.

Any IDEAS?You think you have issues...I have win XP pro on an AMD 473mhz processor with 152mb ram and I wait hours for updates and processes.

But seriously during a windows update you want to have little to no other programs running at that time, ie. exit AIM, MSN messenger, Kazaa, etc. or anything else you have running that need not to run for that time period ESPECIALLY since its going to ask you to restart anyways.  Thats just to clear up some memory.
Secondly you could go in and upgrade your ram.  That is usually the easiest way to get more power and see significent results instantly.
Lastly is the processor a TRUE Pentium or is it only one of the Celeron processers that seem to me to run only half of the listed speed of 2.4.

I have UPGRADED to Windows XP professional, and have created four user ACCOUNTS, the problem I have is that initially everyone saw the same desktop, and if User A removes an icon, that icon is removed from users B C and D's desktops too. In fact any user's changes are replicated on everyone else's desktops, although this only applies to removing icons - SCREENSAVERS, desktop background pictures etc are not affected. I guess this shouldn't happen, as everyones desktop UPDATES are meant to be exclusive to that person - aren't they? Any ideas?have this users been created properly>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q279/7/83.asp&NoWebContent=1   >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q294/8/87.asp&NoWebContent=1

Solve : HP Logo at Boot?

Answer»

I've been pondering and scouring the web for this solution, but my quest seems to have no end! Does anyone know how to DELETE or stop making the Hewlett Packard Logo from appearing when I boot my computer? I can't seem to find a solution. Some say it's impossible and others say (on different message boards) that there was a solution (some kind of program) but is now lost in the void. WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE ANY INPUT!!!

Thanks!I heard about this solution once its a long shot... replace the Motherboard to ONE that isnt HP.

Sorry about the sarcasm, but is it really worth the trouble?either HACK the reg or search your pc for hp logo and delete it....and  a snippet of what else you can do >RIGHT click My Computer, select Properties. Go to Advanced, Startup and Recovery, Settings and click the EDIT button.  Locate the line that loads XP and add /SOS to the end of it.  The resulting line should look something like this:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /SOS

Solve : Fan won't turn off during stand-by?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this....

Two days ago, on April 6th, I tried to put my computer on stand-by before I go to sleep like I always do, and it seemed to go into stand-by for everything except the FAN. It keeps running every time I put it into stand-by mode. It makes the usual "click" sound as it goes into stand-by, but the fan keeps running. It's really weird. When I try to bring it back from stand-by sometimes, the computer makes three or four clicking sounds, like it's having trouble coming back from stand-by.

I can't think of a reason why, or anything that I did different, except that I had installed a new logitech 310 mouse the same day.

When I shut-down the computer, the fan shuts off. It's not really that big of a deal, but I usually like keeping my computer on stand-by instead of SHUTTING it down every night.

I have no idea if this is a SOFTWARE or a hardware problem, and I'm not that great with hardware, so any help would be appreciated. I'm good at following directions though, so if I need to post more information, let me know. The first link you may want to sit  down and read is: http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1019158863 This will help you to attempt fixing this similar problem.

Then here are a few links argueing the difference of leaving a computer on/standby/hibernate/sleep/or off.

http://www.toejumper.net/speed5/shutdown5.htm
http://www.speed-geeks.com/Geek_Zone/Tips_Tricks/Windows_Basics.html#What%20is%20Standby%20mode
Thanks a LOT Detox, the first link really helped . It was my new mouse after all, and I had to change the power settings to make sure the computer wasn't supplying it power after it goes on stand-by.

After checking the other three links, I GUESS it might be better to hibernate my computer instead and shut it down once a week.Excellent links Detox, I've learned something today.  Thanks.

Solve : CD drive icon?

Answer»

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the icon of the cd drive, and rename it, because on my computer the NAME and icon are currently WRONG. At the moment the icon is of a smart media card which comes from my card reader, and the name is Smart Media (E:). In My Computer there appear to be 2 smart media removable drives, one of them being the cd drive and the actual smart media drive. It still works just as normal, but its still annoying. This happened when i installed a new cd drive in my computer, after INSTALLING an internal card reader in the spare floppy drive bay. The OS is XP. If the icon or the name can't be changed, is there a way of reseting it to the correct name and icon? Any HELP would be much appreciated, thanks. With the icon you want to rename selected, press the F2 key. Type the new name, then press EnterMaybe i should have SAID that it doesn't let you rename it in the normal fashion, and it doesn't let you change the icon in normal fashion either. I did find a way that invovled going into the registry, but i tried it and found the instructions to be, at least in my case, wrong.

My old Sony PCV90 displays prompt :
ATI-264GT/A2 PSEUDO EDO BIOS 2.199
Key BOARD does'nt work, mouse does'nt work, same prompt at reboot with recovery disc in. The previous day there was a power outage and there was no protection. Is it worth the $100.00 for a 40G hard drive and 128k RAM memory upgrade as a back up machine? I'll likely pass if it also needs a mother board and or processor. My first guess WOULD be mainboard fried.  But have tried to get into the bios at boot up?  And exactly what does it do when starting up any beep, DISPLAY(sony pic, ram count, dos, etc.?No beeps!  just a prompt dash flashing and then :
ATI-264GT/A2 Pseudo EDO BIOS 2.199
Keyboard, mouse, recovery disc dont work.Well after some research I can only gather that the ATI264GT is the video card I dont know if it is onboard.  If you are unable to get into the bios I doubt you could even try a different video card to test if that is the problem.  Sony really doesnt have much of a support site for the record.  I am THINKING its toast...sorry

Solve : Computer falls into a coma?

Answer»

After 30 min my screen saver kicks in, lately it does not respond when mouse or keyboard is touched, XP 2000 OFFICE, I have TRIED ctl alt delete, and esc, neither works, have to rebootIs the screen saver still running when it locks up or has the screen went blank?  If it has, it is POSSIBLE that either the computer has gone into 'standby' mode or even 'hibernation' mode.  I know I have never had any luck with stanby and my computer never comes back with out REBOOTING.  If that is the case then try disabling it.  If it is not, I suggest first a thourough virus scan, second try a different screen saver.  After that I am at a loss at the moment. Good luck Screen saver is still running, microsft plus, fish in a tank, whatever, I ran virus scans, spy wear, defrag. ETC. I have not tried another screen saver yet, just bugs me that I can't find out why this is happening. Thanks anyway Cagef8 safe mode and chose the last good config or  type msconfig in the run box and chose selective start up.. and losk in the control panel admin tools event log errors..and if not scan for the m$BLASTER worm..

Solve : Interface for DVD rewriter?

Answer»

I am looking to purchase an internal DVD rewriter DRIVE but am a little confused by the interfaces available. IDE EIDE or SCSI. Would a rewriter with a EIDE interface be compatible with an IDE on the motherboard, for instance?  Not knowing much on the subject myself I did a little research and through this site you can get the most information:  http://www.acc.umu.se/~sagge/scsi_ide/

From what I can tell SCSI requires either a PCI card to attach to, verses ATA/IDE is the STANDARD like with HARD drives RUNNING DMA or Ultra DMA's 33/66/100 bus SPEEDS. E-IDE is an enhanced version explained here: http://thef-nym.sci.kun.nl/cgi-pieterh/atazip/atafq.html

Solve : what is the command for "read cd-rom?"?

Answer»

hey guys,

what is the command in dos 6.22 for ("read cd-rom?")What exactly are you trying to do? If you are trying to ACCESS your CDrom Drive just type the drive letter in the command line.

C:\>D:
or
C:\>E:

This will PUT you in your CDrom drive, then do a DIR command to find the file you are LOOKING for. IF you are looking to run a program from the CDROM, type the drive letter and the name of the program.

C:\>D:\program.exe
or
C:\>D:\setup.exe
Something of that nature

Solve : Can't see CD Drive in My Computer?

Answer»

On installing a new hard drive, my CD Rom drive will not SHOW up in Windows 98. As per instructions from your help files I have set the new hard drive to master, but this has it's own cable anyhow. CD rom drive is also set to master on it's own cable, I have tried on slave but still it wont work.
Also when the computer in booted up I get a message as follows: THE COMPRESSION DRIVER CANNOT BE SET UP CORRECTLY. GET A VERSION FROM YOUR VENDOR THAT IS COMPATIBLE WITH THIS VERSION OF WINDOWS
PRESS ANY KEY TO CONTINUE.
What is this compression drive for and how can I stop this message coming up.
Thirdly when shutting down windows will not close proberly, one has to manually switch off. Then on re-boot it goes to SCAN DISC first.
I do hope someone can help me.
does the hard drive show up in the bios hit the del key on boot up in there if it does you will see setup DEFAULTS maybe f9 hit that and save exit..then you NEED a boot floppy place that in the drive with the win98cd and follow on screen instructions..or m$ofts>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;187218&Product=w98 The Following reason may cause the problem

2) jumpper settings in cd-drive
3)bad ide cable

Solve : Avast Anti-Virus?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this sould go under software or virus forum....hope this is OK here

I, and a NUMBER of others, have had a TERRIBLE time trying to download updates for AVG anti-virus. They are not even working when trying to download them manually from the site. This has been on-going for several weeks now.

I have finally given up on AVG. It is an excellent anti-virus program, but useless if I can't update it. I am also leery now of buying AVG's paid version....don't want the same update problems. So, I have uninstalled it and installed Avast A/V.

Now, for an Avast question: After my first scan, I got a window with a whole BUNCH of items I don't understand. I USE ADAWARE all the time. YET, when I scanned with Avast, I got repeated entries under c:\WINDOWS\Application Data....
Such things as \sbRecovery.ini (at least a dozen of these), and a bunch of cookies (advertising, bfast, doubleclick, fastclick, hitbox, etc).

Why isn't AdAware picking these up, or are they not spyware versions? Can/Should they be removed? Thanks for any insight here.

Best....Larry

P.S. - I did register....been waiting all morning for my password, but it hasn't shown up yet....will keep watching email.Just as a point of information....in case this should come up for anyone else....I found the files that Avast anti-virus was coming up with. Although I use AdAware, I never removed Spybot. I didn't realize that Spybot had a folder in c:\WINDOWS\Application Data....

In this folder are several other folders. One of them is called Recovery. There is where all the files were stored that Spybot had removed. When I ran Avast, it found these files and listed them. So, all I had to do was to empty the Recovery folder.

Actually, this is good. It tells me that Avast is doing a good JOB. Anyway, just thought I'd pass this on.

Best...Larry

Solve : 24start.com?

This is a problem I've read about at another forum and no-one can fix it. A guy posted that his homepage is always been changed to or linked to something CALLED "24start.com". This seems to be some dutch adult related portal but none of the spyware/malware progs can get rid of it. He has been trhough every known cleanup, edited the REGISTRY (XPHome) and still there.

Anyone got any thing to enlighten about "24start'?

Google brings up a few pages in Dutch. Cheers mark cShould be ABLE to fix if a Hijack This log is provided.

Solve : Using IF command in a batch file...??

Answer»

Hello everyone.  I was just wondering if anyone could help me out quickly.  I've been given an assignment by my teacher (yesterday) and he EXPECTS me to know a fair amount of information about writing batch files by Monday morning at 9am.  I'm not doing too badly overall so far, but I've run into a wall at the moment.  What I want to do is have a program do output for 1-3 VARIABLES.  Here's an example of what I mean.

C:\myprogramname

Hello!

C:\myprogramname Dustin

Hello Dustin!

C:\myprogramname Dustin Lacey

Hello Dustin!  Who is your friend Lacey?

or

C:\myprogramname Dustin Lacey Bob

Hello Dustin!  Who is your friend Lacey?  And what is Bob up to these days?

I'm find with the concepts of using %1, %2 %3, etc etc.  I'm also ok with jumping around a bit in the program using labels.  I'm just having trouble with IF statements.

I can't  figure out how to say if %1 has nothing in it then write "Hello" and skip the rest of the program.

I'm just not sure how to tell if %1 %2 and %3 are empty or not by using an IF statement.  If someone could help me out a bit, that WOULD be much appreciated.  Thank you.Sample code:

echo off
if (%1) == () goto :noparam1
if (%2) ==() goto :noparam2
if (%3) == () goto :noparam3
echo.
echo Hello %1! Who is your friend %2? And what is %3 up to these days?
echo.
goto :exit
:noparam1
echo.
echo ***** Error ***** No parameters were supplied to command
echo.
goto :exit
:noparam2
echo.
echo Hello %1!
echo.
goto :exit
:noparam3
echo.
echo Hello %1! Who is your friend %2?
echo.
:exit   Thank you!  THANKFULLY my test was rescheduled, so now I know what I'm doing for it.  THANKS again for your help!!!

Solve : Beeping noise -- driving me crazy?

Answer»

OK, here is the problem. I'm running windows 2000 pro for about six months no problem. Then all of a sudden my computer starts making the "error" noise (you know that little "ding" noise)... every 6 seconds.

I've done and ad- and spy-ware seach with mulitple programs as well as countless virus searches with norton.

As far as i can norton, ad-adware and spybot can tell me I'm free from infection.

What can i do. I have the feeling that this can be one of a MILLION problems. Is their somthing I can try before I giveup and reformat?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanksHave you checked the systems event viewer to see if a message is being recorded by the system or application indicated there is a problem?  To GET to the event viewer: right click on My Computer, select MANAGE, click the "+" NEXT to the Event Viewer group, you will see several event logs.  Check the System and Application event logs for a message that keeps reoccuring indicating a problem.Could it be one of the cooling fans malfunctioning and allowing something to overheat and sending the beeps... it has been a LONG time but something like that was happening to me once.  Try going into bios and checking fan speeds and or running temps.  Or just get some software to run in Windows.

Solve : 1.2 GB file in my Windows Temp folder?

Answer»

I have a laptop with a 5GB hard-drive and 64MB RAM, running Windows ME. It became slower and slower to use, until last YEAR it got ridiculous and I gave up and bought a new computer.

Now however, I'm trying to get my laptop back in working use. One problem is that the "Windows" folder is hogging over 3GB of the entire 5GB hard-drive. I dug around in that folder a bit, and in C/Windows/TEMP I found a file called QTPluginTemp1025565 that is 1.2GB in size! My question is whether or not it is safe to delete this file. I have no idea what it even does. There are lots of other various files called QTPlugin in the same folder, with various numbers in the titles. Some are only small in size, there's only the one 1.2GB file, but there are five or six others that are hundreds of MB in size each.

I am presuming they are something to do with Quicktime but I have idea what. Some help and advice would be much appreciatedI did a search on google, it seems to me that Quick time stores MOVIES in a cache for some reason. This file is that cache. Have you DOWNLOADED a bunch of movies or used QT for a movies or something? I would say yeah go ahead a delete it.One other possibility would be to right-click, then select delete to SEND it to recycle bin (don't empty recycle bin yet) and wait a few days to see if everything is still working OK. If all is OK, then you could go ahead and empty recycle bin. If not OK, you can restore it from the recycle bin. At least this way you can recover it if you need it.

Or, you could just go to Control Panel > Add/Remove and uninstall Quick Time completely (then get rid of any lingering folders it doesn't delete). Then, if you do want Quick Time, redownload it fresh from the QT web site. At least then you will have it taking minimal space. Of course, that means losing any movies you may have stored (do you have a burner so you could save things to a CD/DVD first?). My other thought is this: Since it is a laptop and not a full-size computer, do you really WANT movies on it? Do you even really need QT? If not, just get rid of it....DEPENDING on what you plan to do with the laptop.

Best....Larry

Solve : SendKeys Command?

Answer»

Is there a COMMAND in DOS that can send keys to an open WINDOW?Well we are not EXACTLY sure what you are trying to do but you can USE the "start" command to start many of the Windows PROGRAMS through MS-DOS. For example you could open the notepad program by typing:

start c:\windows\notepad.exe

Thanks.

I run a batch file to install an application. There is a serial to be entered in some field in an open window.

Is there a command that can be put in that batch to enter the serial for me?If you are running in a Windows environment (95, 98, Windows 2000, etc.), there is a nice free utility called AutoIt which can send keystrokes (and many more nice things) to a application.  See site:

Solve : No Sound Unless I Reboot!?

Answer» WITHOUT fail, there is no sound the first time I start my computer. If I immediately reboot, the sound is there. I have Creative's AudioPCI ES1371, ES1373 (WDM) listed in Device Manager under Sound Controllers. I'm on WindowsXP.

-I've downloaded the latest driver but I still must reboot before I get any sound

-I've reinstalled the latest driver but I still must reboot before I get any sound

-I've switched speakers and even used headphones instead but I still must reboot before I get any sound

Help! Could it be an IRC (or is it IRQ) CONFLICT?After comparing the sound card model number #CT5803(engraved on the card itself) to a list at Creative's Support website, it appeared the card was the Soundblaster Audio PCI 64. However, the card came as part of a refurbished Gateway computer (bought about 5 or 6 years ago). According to the Gateway serial number #6001502 (printed on a sticker stuck onto the card), it was not an Audio PCI 64 but an Audio PCI 128.

Model No. CT5803
http://us.creative.com/support/identifyproduct/

Serial No. 6001502
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOUND/6001502/600150201.shtml

At first, I THOUGHT Gateway must have labeled the card incorrectly with the wrong serial number and that I had been installing the wrong drivers accordingly all these years. However, Gateway support incredibly has images of all their products on their support website listed under its respective serial number. My card matched the image of the card listed under the Gateway serial number and was in fact the Audio PCI 128 and not the PCI 64.

Well I figured out the problem. The sound card was from Creative but had been ALTERED by Gateway/Dell for their product (my refurbished computer). And here's the text from the Gateway site which finally pinpointed the source of my sound problems...

"This is the Creative Labs Digital Audio PCI sound card, part number 6001502. It is meant for use with only the Kadoka motherboard. On the GRAPHIC, click the hyperlinks for more information."

Solve : capture a line at a time from a txt file?

Answer»

does ANYONE know how to CAPTURE a line of a text file from DOS

example text file:

marco
paul
linda

I'm looking to READ the first line then set it equal to a variable in my batch file then read the next line in the second loop etc....The answer would depend on the operating system you are talking about.  The following line will display each line in a text file (called sample.txt) if running a DOS window under Windows 2000 (all on one line):

for /f "tokens=1, 3* delims=~" %G IN (sample.txt) DO echo %G%H%I

If the preceeding command is run in a batch file, the references to variables %G, %H, %I would be %%G, %%H, %%I.

This command is not available in MSDOS 3-6.

Solve : Resart\Crashing problems.?

Answer»

Beasically this is the problem, from the begining.

I was RUNNING an Asus A7V133 with a Geforce 2 MX 400. I upgraded the videocard to a Geforce FX 5200. The computer started randomly restarting. The best way to describe it is that it is like someone bumped the reset button.

I put the old card back in... the crashing continued. I figured it was time for a new motherboard anyway, and figured maybe the crashing was due to the card being 8x and the motherboard only supporting 4x. (even though the crashing continued with the old card) so I bought a new motherboard. I bought an Asus A7N8X-X.

Crashing continued. I bought a new case with a 400watt powersupply. Crashing continued.

I borrowed a different hard drive from a friend. Crashing continued. I unplugged the CDROM and Floppy. Crashing continued. I flashed the BIOS, updated all the drivers for everything including my mouse. Crashing continued. Did the windows updates (even though it screwed up my sound card. fixed that). Crashing continued. I have reformatted a number of times with XP and even tried 98 once. Crashing continues. I went back to thinking it was the video card. Bought a Geforce FX 5900 XT. Crashing continued. Traded it back in for an ATI 9600 XT. Crashing continued.

Everytime I reinstall Nvidia drivers or remove them, I use detonator RIP to make sure the registry and everything is clear of them.

Now I basically have enough parts for two computers. So I took one day a couple weeks AGO and built them both. The one with all the new parts still crashes. The original computer that the crashing started on (the Asus A7V133 with the second-newest card, the Geforce FX 5200) is running perfectly. It is the same exact setup that the computer started crashing with. The problem seemed to jump from one computer to another.

There is one difference. The hard drive. The system that is working now is using the hard drive I borrowed from a friend. The reason I dont think it is the hard drive though is because like I said, the hard drive was at one point in a setup that did crash. Both hard drives were at some point.

Now the crashing is kind of random. I can just run the OPERATING system fine and it might crash once or twice a day. I can even run Team Speak (http://www.teamspeak.org/) to talk to my buddies online just fine. And the crashing is minimal, but still happens. When I run a graphic intensive game, it seems to crash more often. Anywhere from WITHIN 5 minutes of loading the game or 5 HOURS of loading the game. So I know it has to do something with graphics or maybe system memory. But I can not for the life of me identify it. Once I seem to narrow it down to something, and I think I fixed the problem, it crashes again.

Any thoughts? Any questions?

Oh one more thing. Of the billion crashes I have gotten a BDOS messege twice. A blue BDOS screen saying "DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and gives some memory refrences. This has only happened twice. Out of all the times it has happened.

Everything I have looked up about this has not worked or even related to my problem. Some IRQ's are shared, but both the tech support for my Video Card and my Motherboard have said that as long as it is set to an IRQ, IRQ sharing in WinXP is fine.

In short.
Have swapped motherboards (including ram and cpu), video cards, sound cards, hard  drives, cdroms, floppies...I am exhausted. Been working at this for about 3 months now.

Any help would rock. Thanks a ton.

-BenWell sounds like you have tried a lot of combinations... What operating system are you using?  With regard to putting a 8X card into a 4X slot did the rest of the system even meet video cards minimum requirements.  What are the processor speeds?  Have you considered updating the BIOS? RUnning XP, but have also tried 98.

Yeah have flashed the BIOS and even reset it.

Minimum requirements? Not positive, but like I said it is running perfect now on that system.

CPU... on the old system is a 1.33 Ghz   new one is a AMD 2700 (think that is 2.16)
