Solve : i think i need another mother board? |
Answer» rite my computer turns on some times and DOESNT SOMETIMES!!! its a packardbel (pc world comp) the front 2 usb ports are kicked in and just dont KNOW wat to do can some 1 plz help me :pDo you mean sometimes when youy press the button nothing happens and other times it turns on. Have you tried re-attaching the power switch to the motherboard or swaping the reset switch for the power switch so the reset switch turns it on (to test if the button is not dodgey).I have had the same PROBLEM at times. I think it may have something to do with the mother board or other component inside the tower overheating. when it usually happens to me, I LET the computer sit for a while; toggle the reset switch on the back; and it starts right up. If overheating is the problem, you may want to look at installing a fan to cool the inside. COMPUSA sells on that fits right in to one of the back ports. They also sell ones that will fit into the top of a tower. Hope this helps. |

Solve : Using Your iPod in a Storm Invites Lightning Strikes? |
Answer» http://www.theinternetpatrol.com/the-most-important-of-all-apple-ipod-tips-using-your-ipod-in-a-storm-invites-lightning-strikes It’s not there in the Apple iPod instructions, and it’s rarely listed with other iPod info, but here is one of the most important iPod tips you’ll ever get: don’t use your iPod during lightning storms, because if lightning strikes, it can conduct the charge through the earphones, across your chest, and into your head! Put another WAY, when it comes to lightning safety, don’t use your iPod during lightning storms! Unfortunately, that’s just what happened to a Canadian jogger who recently made the news when his lightning strike while listening to his iPod was written up in the New England Journal of Medicine. The jogger was burned across his chest, his eardrums were ruptured, and his jaw broken. The incident occurred nearly two years ago, but was only just written up. More recently, however, a young man in Colorado was struck by lightning while listening to his iPod, and also suffered severe hearing loss as a result, also having his eardrums ruptured by the lightning traveling up the iPod headset to his hears. Two surgeries later, he still is hearing impaired. Now, it’s important to understand that having the iPod isn’t causing the lightning to strike, but it is conducting the electricity into the device, and up the headset wires into the ears and head. While some iPod PACKAGING cautions against listening to the iPod in the rain, it doesn’t spell out that there is a DANGER of lightning traveling up into your head. Explained emergency room physician Dr. Mary Ann Cooper, “It’s GOING to hit where it’s going to hit, but once it contacts metal, the metal conducts the electricity.” Regardless of whether you are wearing an iPod or not, current lightning safety wisdom says to get INSIDE the moment you hear thunder or, as they say, “When thunder roars go indoors.” |

Solve : windows won't load up on my monitor.? |
Answer» I'm having a slight issue. My Desktop LOAD up normally after you turn it on. It GOES through the bios page then the loading window page, but when it finally starts to load up the desktop the monitor shuts off. The computer is still running and working fine and the monitor is working fine as well. I'm running my laptop and connected it to the monitor and it works fine. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. I thought it was a hardware issue at first but when i load up the computer, i see the bios and i see the loading windows page as well. I think it's a driver issue but i'm not sure. I'm having a slight issue. My Desktop load up normally after you turn it on. Are you HOOKING the same monitor to two different computers, a desktop and a laptop with different results? There again not sure. The computer is still powered on when the monitor shuts off? Can you startup in safe mode and check the power SETTINGS for the monitor? The "Turn Off Monitor" power settings are adjustable from "1 minute" to "Never". To get there. Start/Control Panel/Power Options/Power Schemes Tab/Turn Off Monitor/Set it to Never Please clarify what your asking if I'm off base.I seem to be having the same issue, Win XP and GForce GRAPHICS card. What happens you turn the computer on and it starts to load normally and then the windows bar loads at the bottom (green light on monitor) then the screen turns black as soon as the desktop is ready to load, and the light turns orange on the monitor. As long as you are in the bios it works but as soon as windows loads it stops working. |

Solve : Adding Additional Monitor? |
Answer» I followed the STEPS to add an alternate monitor extending from my laptop. It is 19 inches vs. 14 inches. The same image is being beamed onto this second monitor, but not ... the larger monitor.......This seems to be a CONTRADICTION. Quote The same image is being beamed onto this second monitor, but not my desktop,If that second monitor has the same image as your laptop screen, then that is your desktop. So, this statement doesn't make sense, either. Quote from: redgoat on December 11, 2007, 08:54:40 PM I followed the steps to add an alternate monitor extending from my laptop. It is 19 inches vs. 14 inches. I fixed it..Sorry for the convaluted question. Funny, all I had to do was use my brain for ten minutes.. Do you think that I change my own oil?? Thanx for the patience....I read your last post earlier and I see you've edited it. Apparently, you opened Display settings and made changes there. Solve : How to delete a web link in address drop down bar?? |
Answer» Under my tool bar is my address box to TYPE in the site address. I clicked on something in my mail and it brought me to an adult site which I clicked back out of. Now it is up in my address drop down bar that SAVES and shows all the sites that you typed in and went to. If you click on the little blue box at the end of the address box, all the addresses are in there so you don't have to re-type them back in again. Now that adult site is in there too. How can I just DELETE that site address out of there? I don't want my kids to SEE it in there and click on it.What web browser are you using? Include the version number. I hope this is what you're asking. I use Internet Explorer with Windows XP. Is this right?Yes, that's part of what I was asking. The other part, the version number, can be obtained by clicking on Help, About Internet Explorer. I've had IE 7 now for, oh, maybe 8 months or so. So, I don't recall how IE 6 compares to IE 7 in some aspects. But, go to TOOLS, Internet Options, and look at your option for deleting browser history. That worked, thank you..... I am glad your problem is solved. |

Solve : two beeps mean????? |
Answer» I encountered a problem with my pc this morning. everytime I switch on the power my cpu turns on and after a while two beeps are heard then it shuts off. The monitor also turns on and off. After some attempts of switching it on, pc doesnt start My hubby removed part of the cpu (maybe the VIDEO card) and forgot to put it back. After some hours, I tried to put back TEH video card and turn on again...luckily it works. My problem is what if this happens again and never starts? two beeps mean??This issue can be caused by any of the below situations. This issue can be caused by any of the below situations. Thank you for the info.... There is no new hardware Connections were checked and connected properly. Maybe: -Bad or failing hardware device. -Recent electrical storm that caused a surge that damaged computer. -Other hardware issue. Thank you for the info....... sorry for the "CPU" You could try the following: Unplug the power supply from the wall. Hold in the power button on the front of the machine a few times. On the back of the PSU there is a small black toggle switch...clik it up and down a few times WARNING: Not the red switch ...this is the voltage setting and should not be touched. Plug the machine back up and see what happens. Some newer PSU's have a protection circuit inside to prevent damage in power spikes...this resets that circuit. If this doesn't produce good results then we'll have to check a few other things. Do you have your MBoard manual ? ? Quote from: patio on December 05, 2007, 09:21:48 AM You could try the following: This morning same thing happened again but only one beep, system unit and monitor turn on for a few seconds then shut off. after some few attemps it works. I will try ur suggestions tomorrow morning coz i'm afraid cant open/use this pc tonight. My PSU has no toggle switch at the back. how is that? Mboard manula is nowhere to find.To patio, I did your advice. Problem is still the same although I can open my pc for several attempts of switching it on and off. Will it damage my hard disk if I keep on switching like that? What do you think is the problem, is it my power supply unit? That would be my first suspicion and yes you can damage a HDD if it's not getting the full AMOUNT of power it requires... Borrow a known working PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there. As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions... Have you CHANGED any other hardware recently and or removed the CPU at all ? ?Thanks guys!!!! my son replaced the PSU and now it opens normally... Nice of you to let US know the outcome as we love success stories here... If you do have to replace the PSU do yourself a favor and don't grab the 20 dollar specials. Stop back anytime. |

Solve : would appreciate advice please? |
Answer» I purchased a new laptop 6 months ago after i came to the end of my tether with the one which i use to use (and eventually gave away to a friend for her university work), causing constant problems such as crashing and the dvd rewriter failing and ultimately the harddrive totally dying after only 2 years. I was awaiting the return of the older one which had been sent off for repair for the 4th time in only 2 years and after hearing nothing after 6 weeks and getting no sense from the people who were meant to be repairing it, i thought id cut my losses and buy a new one. Because the 1st one had cost me a grand (includes 5 year cover plan), i thought i would go for a cheaper one , but now i seriously wish i hadnt for a few reasons including the fact that just 2 weeks after purchasing the new one the old one came back with a new hardrive fitted . I am getting more and more problems developing with the new one, including 1)it refusing to do more then one thing at a time, ie if i am listening to an mp3 and trying to surf the internet or something it stops dead, 2)an annoying message saying" windows explorer has stopped working" appears frequently when i am in the middle of stuff and then everything going off , 3) my windows media player has stopped working completely 4) my PRINTER which worked fine with the xp system wont work atall with this despite downloading the new drivers, so i purchased a new one and this wont work either 5) The most annoying thing is that it wont even let me create the restore disk-there wasnt any windows disks with it when i bought it, because aparently they now expect you to make your own. 6 )aswell as this the system is very sluggish and my older one was much faster, and i am ashamed to admit that i have only just realized why, the machine runs vista basic and has only a 1.6 ghz processor and 446mb memory , while my old one running xp had a 512mb memory and 2.8 ghz processor and i could also run paint shop pro on it which I like to use but havent been able to since getting this one. I have since heard that windows vista needs a minimum of 2 gb of ram to run correctly, which sems to explain why i am having such problems. Its very annoying because i have barely nothing on this pc and yet its still so slow I contacted the people with whom i have the cover plan and all they said is do a packard bell reformat from the c drive . I did this and it has made no difference atall. So i contacted them again and they said nothing of any help atall. It seems i wasted my money and am continuing to do so because they are taking £7 per month direct debit from me for my insurance cover. I just dont know what to do, should i try to sell this one or give it away,? or persevere with it?, Sorry to talk for so long but i am quite distressed Thank you for any advice Not to over simplify your issues but a machine that is only 6 months old should not be acting this way. I would suggest not trying to FIX it yourself as it could void the warranty. Contact the manufacturer directly Packard Bell and voice your displeasure. This gives you a paper trail for your complaint. Immediately after contact the retailer and let them know you have talked to the Manuf. and that you would rather resolve this without getting them involved. They should be alot more receptive to offering you a replacement solution at this point instead of simply telling you to run the Recovery CD's. Good Luck and remember the squeaky whell gets the grease but you have to be somewhat diligent in forcing the issue on your end.Hello I must clarify: Windows Vista Basic requires a recommended amount of 512MB of RAM Windows Home Premium requires a recommended amount of 1GB Secondly: When you go through the process of reformatting, are you backing up your files, and then putting them on the computer again? If so, I suspect that this may be a possible virus. My cousin had a laptop that had a virus (I have it now) that had a virus that caused constant CPU and Hard Drive usage, and basically, melted the hard drive, and cracked her desk in half (yes, it managed to reach out and physically affect something.. quite scary when you think about it). Anyways, the following questions now appear: Do you have an Antivirus? Is it updated? Have you done a full SCAN? User made the following reply via PM: Thank you for your reply. I heard recently too that my system memory is insufficient, not even 512mb Embarrassed, i am pretty annoyed about this. I think they should let me trade it in for a better one and i will add the money to it. I also though about uninstalling vista and buying an xp disk but am not sure if it would be compatible with this system. You asked if i backed up and reinstalled the backup after reformatting, no i dont back anything off my laptop up atall, as i have 2 external hardrives, one which is 320 gb, and also back up important stuff to dvds. When i have reformated i reinstall the programs that i use again, which is very few because i dont want to slow it down even more and also i barely have any vista ready applications, but hundreds of xp stuff which is annoying. AS for the virus issue, i have used a few different ones including norton internet security, but since unistalled due to it slowing my system down further, also tried mcafee, kapersky, avg, and panda, and i check for updates for which ever i am using at any time on a daily basis and no viruses have ever been found but has been some spyware which has ALWAYS been eradicated upon detection. Thanks again for your input (My reply follows now:) I dont think that your speed reduction is caused Vista, but, as for Antivirus: Make sure that avast! is the only Antivirus scanner on your computer. Once you have done that, go into avast (by finding it in the Start menu, or right clicking the avast icon in your system tray, and selecting "Start Avast Antivirus") Once in Avast, Select Menu from the top left hand side, and select "Schedule Boot-time scan" In "Areas to Scan" select All Local Disks, and select "Scan Archive Files" Check Advanced options, and change the first action to "Move Infected Files to Chest" On the second default action (for system files) select Ignore or move for System files. Select Schedule, and allow Avast to restart your computer. This scan may take a while (Ill take a guess at 1-3 hours) Why do I recommend this? It is possible that, through your external drives, you might have contracted a virus. Thanks for the replies to my message, i do appreciate it alot . I decided to contact the people with whom my insurance is with and asked them where i would stand with regards to my warranty if i were to have more memory fitted and they said as long as its fitted by pc world then there is no problem. So i took my laptop ALONG this last monday and had it upgraded to 2 GB. THe system is okay so far and i can now even listen to mp3s while on the internet etc something which i could never do before because it stopped dead. THanks again beth |

But your mileage may vary.)Looks valid, but the stock ran out :/ Yes, they did run out. However, they got it back in stock. I ordered mine on the 19th and it's on it's way to me. Answer» I'm just curious what you use. Maybe, I'll find some interesting add-on, I'm not aware of. I have a question about NoScript, because it seems to be very popular download.Short answer - yes. But only if you want it to. It can be configured to block all types of scripts, including Java, Javascript, Flash, Silverlight, etc. However, you can then add sites to your whitelist and allow one or more of these scripts for any site. It's a very powerful tool which can HELP keep you safer, and it can ALSO be used as a content blocker (it replaced Flashblock for me) to block almost anything you don't want. Give it a try - I was dubious at first after a friend recommended it, but I tried it out and afetr a week, I won't use Firefox without it.Thanks, Calum for that info.. |

Solve : I can't access a forum? |
Answer» No one else I know is having the problem. I can't get on a phpbbtown forum. It is my own site. I don't know what could be causing it. Did you ban yourself ? ? No, I wasn't banned. The page is just coming up not available. I've checked my virus software, changed some things, cleaned out my files, cookies, and am getting nothing. Quote from: patio on December 05, 2007, 09:50:17 AM Did you ban yourself ? ? www.phpbbtown.com/myforum/?mforum=allinthefamily that is my forum. I can't get on it or any other pbpbbtown forum either. What browser are you using? IE? Try Firefox, or vice versa.Loads fine on this END...just so you know. The only thing i can think of is a restriction on your machine....firewall/inadvertant hosts entry etc. Have you logged in from another machine to MAKE sure your user still exists ? ? Also highly UNLIKELY but contact your ISP to see if it has been accidentally blocked on their end. Quote from: patio on December 05, 2007, 10:26:54 AM Loads fine on this end...just so you know. that is what I'm thinking to,but I turned off my firewalls and still nothing. I can log on from another machine just fine. I don't think it could be my ISP. I have internet explorer and firefox and I can't get on the forum with either. GGRRR! This is so frustrating. Quote inadvertant hosts entryQuote from: Broni on December 05, 2007, 10:48:09 AM Quoteinadvertant hosts entry How do I check for that?Navigate to: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc You'll see hosts file there (no extension). Open it in Notepad, and paste it back here. Quote from: Broni on December 05, 2007, 10:57:53 AM Navigate to: Wow, I MUST be stupid. I have no idea just exactly to do what you just posted to me. So I put that link into my search engine or do what with it exactly? I apologize. I'm so computer ILLITERATE. Quote I'm so computer illiterate. No worries. This is what we're here for. To help. Open Windows Explorer (go Start>Run, type in: explorer, hit Enter), and navigate to the folder, I told you. Right click on hosts file, then Open with, and choose Notepad. Solve : Auto Backup Outlook? |
Answer» I am trying to find an auto backup system. I have Maxtor, but its auto backup system will not backup outlook files. Maxtor tech support states that its system does not back up all files, including outlook, leaving me to wonder what else Maxtor is SKIPPING. I can manually EXPORT the outlook files each night, but that is tedious and Maxtor may be skipping other files. I have to believe that somewhere there is a system that will actually backup everything. Any ideas? |

Solve : Very baffleing situation? |
Answer» This ONE is weird and I am not sure where to go next - long story short - Ex roomate that has 25 years+ programming, unemployed, bored, (criminal?) networked my laptop and desktop into his computers. I did not realize the scope of it for 6-7 months and starting looking into it when my laptop was running slow. I discovered that he had more admin/domain authority that I did. ASKED him to take me off network and he would not. Discovered hidden partitioned 4 GB area on both. Longer story short - I moved, reformatted laptop, NEW hard drive on other, windows XP prof. Have had 5 "techs" to my house who say that they are securing my system. My roomate was also linked up to my desktop with router. I then proceed to find ADDITIONAL passwords in my system - computer name changed, remote access turned on after I turn off - etc. I am running Norton and can see some stuff that bypasses Norton - backdoor g-1-1354, port 9000, remote services running that I as Admin cannot turn off, etc. This is where it gets weird. He locked me out of my Pronto remote control, locked me out of my cellphone (will change both asap) and had asked me for a bluetooth device for my phone that I ran over in my garage and was going to throw away. My last computer was also a new one - I found weird stuff in that one also - IS there any WAY for him to get in through neighbors unsecured wireless or through automating something in regards to remote controller? I have to stretch as this is frustrating - I have a business and have had no usuage for 6 weeks. Network security specialist?? If there is 1 minute unsecured when Norton is being updated or router is being set up can he get in? Please any info is welcome for this bizarre and frustrating situation.Oh dear! |

Solve : HP Deskjet Printer light blinking? |
Answer» The top lights continues to blink on my HP Deskjet 612C Printer; error says I cannot print to LP1 as it is not connected. I've tried two different 600 series deskjet printers and they both do the same thing. I've checked all connections, etc. What is your operating system, and how did you set the printer up?Have you previously used Parallel port, i.e. LP1, devices with that computer? Have you previously used Parallel port printers with it? Are you using the cables that came with the printers? Does the HP Deskjet 600 series require a BIOS setting to ECP, EPP etc.? See this HP page: HP Photosmart Products - Setting the Port to ECP Mode. Check you printer manual for info on it's requirements.I have used this printer for a long time on this computer (laptop, Inspiron 4000, win 2000) and also with various computers and have always used the par. port. The printer just stopped working and the light continues to blink. I am unable to even realign the cartridges. I will check on advice from Soybean.I checked out everything using Soybean's link and all seems ok; resume light is still blinking though. Can you find ANOTHER computer somewhere that you can try installing ONE or both of those printers on? That COULD be a big help in troubleshooting this. I have used this printer for a long time on this computer (laptop, Inspiron 4000, win 2000) and also with various computers and have always used the par. port. The printer just stopped working and the light continues to blink. I am unable to even realign the cartridges. I will check on advice from Soybean. It may have expired. Yes, it may have expired , but maybe it just needs to be realigned since it was moved (or at least, this is what I was told). If you cannot connect to it, a realignment would seem impossible. |

Solve : How to build a computer !!? |
Answer» The subject says it all, I would like to build a computer, are there any BOOKS on the subject, what is the best hardware, whare do I get the components. <snip> I second all those. Newegg is a great place to purchase stuff from. Very good service and you usually get things a day or two before they say it will arrive. I have a very good friend that buys a lot of things from Tiger Direct and he says they are really good. Also, I agree with GX1_Man, reading up before-hand is a very important part of the building process. |

Solve : sticking keys? |
Answer» Help!! I have a Compaq Presario 2100 that is about six or seven years OLD. I am having problems with keys sticking. Right now it is the home KEY. Before that it was the "c" key. The keyboard has been taken apart and the connections examined. The home key has been taken off and cleaned. So far there is nothing obvious. I am anxious to solve the problem since it can be pretty difficult typing or doing much of anything when the home key periodically sticks.how far down did you disassemble the keyboard? did you simply pop off and clean the buttons or did you actually clean the contacts on the PCB (Printed Circuit Board)?I popped off and cleaned the buttons and re-seated the contacts on the PCB, but I did not clean the contacts. Thanksthat should do it then. please inform us if the problem still persists.I bet that at some point this keyboard has had a coffee encounter... |

Answer» I got a wii for christmas. I hooked up my wireless to it =]. I downloaded the internet channel off of the wii channel.
Did you mean, "where there's a wii, there's a way." ? Haha. yeah, but I guess i'll live it up with the Wii while it's still invunerable... viruses, though annoying and a nuisance, are EXTREMELY powerful when it comes to infecting a system. You could download a file, and without even executing it, just the copying and pasting of it will execute itself. |
