After installing win 2000, my password is not working.   It looks like it is going to log me on, then it loops back to the LOGON screen.  When I tried to put in something different, i got the MESSAGE about incorrect admin password.  I tried to put back in the recovery disk for win 98, but the cd won't boot up.

Solve : Outlook Bounceback..?

Answer»

I am having a problem with Outlook 2000.
Every time I attempt to send an email out I get an ALMOST immediate response from System Admin telling me that my mail is undeliverable.  However I am able to send and recieve mail internally.  If anyone can offer any assistance, please help me out. I will give any info that MAY be needed, just ask and I will respond.

Thanks, DanIt is likely that the issue exists with your mail server or settings in Microsoft Outlook for your mail server. Are any other computers in your Internal network able to send external e-mails? If other computers are able to send external mail verify that the mail delivery under Outlook options are the same.

FINALLY, does the mail being sent from the administrator contain any additional details such as an "Unknown Failure"? With additional details we may be able to provide you with additional information. In regards to the Unknown Failure error see the below link.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;256014
Sorry it took me so long to reply. The computer that is having the problem is a laptop that belongs to one of our field employees and she just brought it back into the office yesterday.
We are capable of SENDING and recieving mail externally on all of the computers on our network except for this one.  We were able to force outlook to handle external mail by changing the pop3 address to our internal mail server and then changing the SMTP address to that of our providers relay server.  This does seem to work for now, but there seems to be no explanation as to why it is working this way. All of the other workstations are configured with our internal mail server HANDLING the incoming and outgoing messages.

Solve : i think i need another mother board?

Answer»

rite my computer turns on some times and DOESNT SOMETIMES!!! its a packardbel (pc world comp) the front 2 usb ports are kicked in   and just dont KNOW wat to do   can some 1 plz help me :pDo you mean sometimes when youy press the button nothing happens and other times it turns on. Have you tried re-attaching the power switch to the motherboard or swaping the reset switch for the power switch so the reset switch turns it on (to test if the button is not dodgey).I have had the same PROBLEM at times. I think it may have something to do with the mother board or other component inside the tower overheating. when it usually happens to me, I LET the computer sit for a while; toggle the reset switch on the back; and it starts right up. If overheating is the problem, you may want to look at installing a fan to cool the inside. COMPUSA sells on that fits right in to one of the back ports. They also sell ones that will fit into the top of a tower. Hope this helps.

Solve : INCRESING RAM?

Answer»

I HAD PC AND THE FOLLOWING CONFIGERATION
1 WIN XO O/S
2 P3 PROCESSOR
3 64 MB RAM
4 40 GB HDD
MY PROBLEB IS INCRESING THE RAM CAPABILITIES.
64+64=128
I HAVE 64 MB RAM THERE IS ANY PROCEDURE TO ADD AGAIN 64MB RAM .How many slots do you have on you Mother Board for memory? If you have 2 and they both have a 64MB stick you may be maxed out. Depending on what your board supports you may be able to increase the size of the sticks to 128 or 256.RIGHT.    I just upgraded my DDR (RAM). I bought 2 256MB RAM cards. Upgrading is TOO EASY. Go to any computer hardware store and look for the DDR/RAM cards. Depending on how many slots you have, you can add DDR/RAM based on what you're looking for. You will need to know the computer MANUFACTURER or the motherboard manufacturer in order to get the right DDR cards. Once you buy the cards, insert them in you PC and VOILA! You have more RAM. Another thing. When you buy the cards, the instructions may tell you not to INTERMIX the card sizes (EX: (2) 256MB cards and (1) 128MB card) Disregard that. I have (2) 256MB cards and (1) 128MB card and they work fine. Hope this helps!

Solve : Cannot access my 2nd hard drive!!!?

Answer»

I was online when my computer froze up and I had to shut it down.  Ever since I cannot access my additional hard drive.  It appears in "My Computer" but when I try to open it I get the following error:
"D:\ is not accessible.  A device ATTACHED to the system is not functioning."
Under the Performance tab in System Properties it says:
"Drive D is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system."
I have also checked the bios under boot and my other drives (C, Floppy A, and CD Rom) are there but not this one.  I've been SEARCHING online but have not been able to FIND an effective fix.  I am hoping the data on this drive has not been lost - if you can help I would most certainly appreciate it!If you get too FRUSTRATED and can take the LOSS, your best bet is to reformat the hard drive. Kind of painful (losing the information), but it may allow you access to the disk.

Solve : Using Your iPod in a Storm Invites Lightning Strikes?

Answer» http://www.theinternetpatrol.com/the-most-important-of-all-apple-ipod-tips-using-your-ipod-in-a-storm-invites-lightning-strikes

It’s not there in the Apple iPod instructions, and it’s rarely listed with other iPod info, but here is one of the most important iPod tips you’ll ever get: don’t use your iPod during lightning storms, because if lightning strikes, it can conduct the charge through the earphones, across your chest, and into your head! Put another WAY, when it comes to lightning safety, don’t use your iPod during lightning storms!

Unfortunately, that’s just what happened to a Canadian jogger who recently made the news when his lightning strike while listening to his iPod was written up in the New England Journal of Medicine. The jogger was burned across his chest, his eardrums were ruptured, and his jaw broken. The incident occurred nearly two years ago, but was only just written up.

More recently, however, a young man in Colorado was struck by lightning while listening to his iPod, and also suffered severe hearing loss as a result, also having his eardrums ruptured by the lightning traveling up the iPod headset to his hears. Two surgeries later, he still is hearing impaired.

Now, it’s important to understand that having the iPod isn’t causing the lightning to strike, but it is conducting the electricity into the device, and up the headset wires into the ears and head.

While some iPod PACKAGING cautions against listening to the iPod in the rain, it doesn’t spell out that there is a DANGER of lightning traveling up into your head.

Explained emergency room physician Dr. Mary Ann Cooper, “It’s GOING to hit where it’s going to hit, but once it contacts metal, the metal conducts the electricity.”

Regardless of whether you are wearing an iPod or not, current lightning safety wisdom says to get INSIDE the moment you hear thunder or, as they say, “When thunder roars go indoors.”

Solve : Saving Video Clips?

Answer»

I often get e-mails with video clips in them. When I open the clip, it is DOWNLOADED to my Temp. file. How can I SAVE these clips so that I can delete the e-mail, which is using a lot of space. They open in 'Real Player'Real Player, who would dare use a video format that requires that PROGRAM?

Anyways, if the video downloaded to the temp folder like you said, then just navigate to that folder in My Computer. The folder is hidden so you will have to enable 'show hidden files' in the folder options menu. The path on XP should be 'C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\temp.' Somewhere in there will be the file you are looking for.Right click on video attachment, click "Save As", and you'll be able to choose where it downloads to.Finally sorted it like this:

How to Download Temp. Files.

Click on ‘Start’

Right Click on ‘Internet Explorer’

Click on ‘Internet Properties’

Click on ‘Settings’ Box

Click on ‘View Files’

Find the file in the list that you wish to save onto your Computer

High-light the file name

In ‘Folder TASK Box’ ( top left), click ‘Copy this Item’

In the Drop Down box, click the location, ie ‘My Documents’.

Open ‘My Documents and place the icon into any file.

Solve : Is it worth it to keep my computer or buy a new one??

Answer»

I have a HP Pavilion 7905 and have had it for 5-6 years.  It is getting very slow and programs sometimes do not open or work right, etc.  I have run spybot, have Norton Anti-virus, deleted the history under internet options, etc, but it still seems to be quite slow.

My question is if it is worth it to take this in to someone to try to get it working right again or if I would be better off just getting a new computer.  I am by no means a computer guru, so please don't get to "technical" on me.

If I do get a new computer, I would like to stay under $1,000.  What would you suggest?  I use my computer for basic work stuff and internet surfing.  I'm not into gaming or editing videos or any of that more advanced stuff.

Thanks for your help!Well, I see here that you have a 2GHz processor and 512MB of RAM.  So, for your usage, I would say that computer will still serve your purposes fairly well.  I get the impression you've experienced a gradual decrease in performance.  So, the problem is basically a software problem, not a hardware problem.

A formatting of the hard drive and fresh installation of Windows from the recovery CD's you probably received with the computer when new would restore it to like-new performance.  But, I suspect you may be RELUCTANT to do that.  Have you ever done that?

Still, some other measures that don't involve formatting and reinstalling Windows may be quite helpful.  Do you have SP2 (Service Pack 2) for Windows installed?  If not, you should get it.  And, download CCleaner, if you don't have it, and run it's Windows scan and delete what it finds.  Here are some TIPS for Running & Configuring CCleaner.  Also run it's Registry scan and remove, i.e. "fix", all the items it finds; when prompted to backup the registry upon starting the Registry scan, do so.

After running CCleaner, defragment your hard drive.  Are we SEEING any improvement yet?I've been in the same SITUATION as you, with worse hardware.
A fresh install of Windows is not too difficult to achieve, and will definitely help performance.
Also, it is guaranteed to fix all non-hardware errors.
Taking it in to a computer shop will likely just cost a lot of money for something you could do yourself - they'd most probably just reinstall Windows.

Solve : windows won't load up on my monitor.?

Answer»

I'm having a slight issue. My Desktop LOAD up normally after you turn it on. It GOES through the bios page then the loading window page, but when it finally starts to load up the desktop the monitor shuts off. The computer is still running and working fine and the monitor is working fine as well. I'm running my laptop and connected it to the monitor and it works fine. I'm not sure exactly what the problem is. I thought it was a hardware issue at first but when i load up the computer, i see the bios and i see the loading windows page as well. I think it's a driver issue but i'm not sure.

I'd appreciate any help

Furthermore, i'm using windows xp. My gfx card is a GeForce 7950.
Also, the computer has been running fine for about 4 months. No glitches oranything. Quote from: setra on May 23, 2007, 05:39:16 AM

I'm not sure I'm fulling understanding your question. But....

By desktop loading, are you meaning your desktop page loading after Windows starts?

Are you HOOKING the same monitor to two different computers, a desktop and a laptop with different results? There again not sure.  The computer is still powered on when the monitor shuts off?

Can you startup in safe mode and check the power SETTINGS for the monitor?
The "Turn Off Monitor" power settings are adjustable from "1 minute" to "Never".

To get there.
Start/Control Panel/Power Options/Power Schemes Tab/Turn Off Monitor/Set it to Never

Please clarify what your asking if I'm off base.I seem to be having the same issue, Win XP and GForce GRAPHICS card.  What happens you turn the computer on and it starts to load normally and then the windows bar loads at the bottom (green light on monitor) then the screen turns black as soon as the desktop is ready to load, and the light turns orange on the monitor.  As long as you are in the bios it works but as soon as windows loads it stops working.

Solve : Adding Additional Monitor?

Answer»

I followed the STEPS to add an alternate monitor extending from my laptop. It is 19 inches  vs. 14 inches.
The same image is being beamed onto this second monitor, but not my desktop, or the ability to work on the larger monitor.......
Am I just naive??I'm not sure I UNDERSTAND what you are saying.  Could you explain a little more?Yep, I read this one last night and couldn't make any sense of it.

This seems to be a CONTRADICTION.

If that second monitor has the same image as your laptop screen, then that is your desktop.  So, this statement doesn't make sense, either. Quote from: redgoat on December 11, 2007, 08:54:40 PM

I fixed it..Sorry for the convaluted question.
Funny, all I had to do was use my brain for ten minutes..
Do you think that I change my own oil??

Thanx for the patience....I read your last post earlier and I see you've edited it.  Apparently, you opened Display settings and made changes there.  Configuring an extra monitor does take a bit of learning the first time you do it.  Anyway, GLAD to hear you've resolved your problem.  Come back anytime.

Solve : Anyone know any songs that have major bass in them??

Answer»

Hey, i'm doing this little project thing and i need to find some songs that have alot of BASS in them. (I have to blow a sub woofer)-Fun!
Anyways, yeah i don't care what kind of music, hopefully rap, hip-hop, metal. Thanks!deicide... slipknot....Prodigy...Dj tiesto....

just some artists... alot of techno has bass

my ipod just died and i have no chargeer with me sadly

im looking on youtube..

have you googled songs with hard hitting bassBeethoven, Mozart... all those really "bassy" artists... lol j/k of course! Yeah, techno has a lot of good bass. I'm a big techno fan and can probably find some of my techno cd's and send you some songs from them if you'd like. That would be awsome lol.Ok I can review some of the songs TONIGHT after I get off work. PM me and let me know where you want me to send them to.Go to lenardaudio.com.au and read what the audio review expert ran through on the review of the Lenard Audio 'Canberra Opals' test to review the system.  I was there.... bass doesn't get any better.

The reviewer said that these are his 'test' pieces to see how good a loud speaker was.  Enjoy.ThanksDon't know if it's too late, but I recorded a rap song the other day to listen to in my car.  And for some reason the bass got juiced up.  When listening to it, it pushes the subs in my car pretty dang hard (one of the hardest hitting songs I have).

If you would like it just let me know.Yea i know a song it is one of the best song with bass (NAME of it is "my Ruca" by sublime 'Testarossa' Sir Mix-a-Lot. Good heavy bass through parts of the song.  My brother blew a 16" speaker with this song. If you wanna blow a subwoofer, this song might be a good place to start.

A lot of that old early '90s rap had a lot of strong bass.

'80s Stars' Eiffel 65

If I think of any more, I'll ADD them. I'm always WILLING to help in the senseless destruction of electronic equipment  There you go again quaxo...3 month bump !

Solve : computer videos on CD-R for DVD player?

Answer»

So i WANT to burn some of the videos I have on my computer to a data CD-r and i dont know which format my dvd play can play. does ANYONE know where i can find out wich format i can use?Hello. Most DVD VIDEO burning software will burn your videos in a format compatible on a standard DVD PLAYER. The only problem you might encounter is that in different countries, they use different formats, thus, your DVD might only play in the US.

It sounds like you are trying to make a VCD, not a DVD.

Solve : How to delete a web link in address drop down bar??

Answer»

Under my tool bar is my address box to TYPE in the site address. I clicked on something in my mail and it brought me to an adult site which I clicked back out of. Now it is up in my address drop down bar that SAVES and shows all the sites that you typed in and went to. If you click on the little blue box at the end of the address box, all the addresses are in there so you don't have to re-type them back in again. Now that adult site is in there too. How can I just DELETE that site address out of there? I don't want my kids to SEE it in there and click on it.What web browser are you using?  Include the version number. I hope this is what you're asking. I use Internet Explorer with Windows XP. Is this right?Yes, that's part of what I was asking.  The other part, the version number, can be obtained by clicking on Help, About Internet Explorer.  I've had IE 7 now for, oh, maybe 8 months or so.  So, I don't recall how IE 6 compares to IE 7 in some aspects.  But, go to TOOLS, Internet Options, and look at your option for deleting browser history.  That worked, thank you..... I am glad your problem is solved.

Also, if you want to delete only one address, you can rest your mouse over the entry and push "delete" on your keyboard.

EDIT: I just tried my trick in IE 6 and it did not work.  I do not know if it works in IE 7 but it does work in Firefox.

please help
Welcome to the CH forums.

Please read this.

You can test the word entered using an IF command.

Below shows a batch script which works when %pword% is set as an Environment Variable in the user account.

Code: [Select]echo off
cls

echo.
echo.
echo.

set /p m=                        Please enter your password:

IF NOT %m%==%pword% goto bad

start iexplore

exit

:bad
echo.
echo.
echo.

echo                         Password "%m%" is invalid

echo.
echo.
echo                         Press any key to continue
pause >nul
cls

Good luck with your project.I entered that into an MS-DOS computer (not the BIT about starting iexplore) and it doesn't run the program - it just says syntax error for the set command. What can I use instead?

(running MS-DOS 5.0)Bones92 - yep, the SET /P switch is not available in MS-Dos.   You could try the Setenv utility from here.

I only have bare-bones Dos 7.10 available right now so can't test it for you.

Good luck

Solve : two beeps mean?????

Answer»

I encountered a problem with my pc this morning. everytime I switch on the power my cpu turns on and after a while two beeps are heard then it shuts off. The monitor also turns on and off. After some attempts of switching it on, pc doesnt start  My hubby removed part of the cpu (maybe the VIDEO card) and forgot to put it back.  After some hours, I tried to put back TEH video card and turn on again...luckily it works. My problem is what if this happens again and never starts? two beeps mean??This issue can be caused by any of the below situations.

-New hardware conflicting with old hardware.
-Bad or failing hardware device.
-Connections not connected or connected properly.
-Recent electrical storm that caused a surge that damaged computer.
-Other hardware issue.

Going by what you said in your post, I think it would be because of the graphics card.

You could try the following:
Unplug the power supply from the wall.
Hold in the power button on the front of the machine a few times.
On the back of the PSU there is a small black toggle switch...clik it up and down a few times
WARNING: Not the red switch ...this is the voltage setting and should not be touched.

Plug the machine back up and see what happens.
Some newer PSU's have a protection circuit inside to prevent damage in power spikes...this resets that circuit.
If this doesn't produce good results then we'll have to check a few other things.
Do you have your MBoard manual ? ? Quote from: patio on December 05, 2007, 09:21:48 AM

I will try ur suggestions tomorrow morning coz i'm afraid cant open/use this pc tonight. My PSU has no toggle switch at the back.  how is that? Mboard manula is nowhere to find.To patio,

I did your advice. Problem is still the same although I can open my pc for several attempts of switching it on and off. Will it damage my hard disk if I keep on switching like that? What do you think is the problem, is it my power supply unit? That would be my first suspicion and yes you can damage a HDD if it's not getting the full AMOUNT of power it requires...
Borrow a known working PSU of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there.
As always when working inside the case remove all power sources and take anti-static precautions...
Have you CHANGED any other hardware recently and or removed the CPU at all ? ?Thanks guys!!!! my son replaced the PSU and now it opens normally...    Nice of you to let US know the outcome as we love success stories here...
If you do have to replace the PSU do yourself a favor and don't grab the 20 dollar specials.

Stop back anytime.

This may seem like a crazy question, but....

My friend gave me a LAPTOP ( A "Thinkhead") It is old, obviously.
I have gotten on the craze of wiping clean the computers that are given to me, and making them a part of my network.

Well, this one has a phone jack for dial-up, but nothing that an Ethernet cable can plug into. Is there an adapter or some way that I can plug DSL into this antique?

Any help will be appreciated......Yeah, you just need Ethernet PCMCIA Laptop Card, like this:

Solve : would appreciate advice please?

Answer»
I purchased a new laptop 6 months ago after i came to the end of my tether with the one which i use to use (and eventually gave away to a friend for her university work), causing constant problems such as crashing and the dvd rewriter failing and ultimately the harddrive totally dying after only 2 years. I was awaiting the return of the older one which had been sent off for repair for the 4th time in only 2 years and after hearing nothing after 6 weeks and getting no sense from the people who were meant to be repairing it, i thought id cut my losses and buy a new one. Because the 1st one had cost me a grand (includes 5 year cover plan), i thought i would go for a cheaper one , but now i seriously wish i hadnt for a few reasons including the fact that just 2 weeks after purchasing the new one the old one came back with a new hardrive fitted .

I am getting more and more problems developing with the new one, including
1)it refusing to do more then one thing at a time, ie if i am listening to an mp3 and trying to surf the internet or something it stops dead,

2)an annoying message saying" windows explorer has stopped working" appears frequently when i am in the middle of stuff and then everything going off ,

3) my windows media player has stopped working completely

4) my PRINTER which worked fine with the xp system wont work atall with this despite downloading the new drivers, so i purchased a new one and this wont work either

5) The most annoying thing is that it wont even let me create the restore disk-there wasnt any windows disks with it when i bought it, because aparently they now expect you to make your own.

6 )aswell as this the system is very sluggish and my older one was much faster, and i am ashamed to admit that i have only just realized why, the machine runs vista basic and has only a 1.6 ghz processor and 446mb memory , while my old one running xp had a 512mb memory and 2.8 ghz processor and i could also run paint shop pro on it which I like to use but havent been able to since getting this one.

I have since heard that windows vista needs a minimum of  2 gb of ram to run correctly, which sems to explain why i am having such problems. Its very annoying because i have barely nothing on this pc and yet its still so slow

I contacted the people with whom i have the cover plan and all they said is do a packard bell reformat from the c drive . I did this and it has made no difference atall. So i contacted them again and they said nothing of any help atall. It seems i wasted my money and am continuing to do so because they are taking £7 per month direct debit from me for my insurance cover.
I just dont know what to do, should i try to sell this one or give it away,? or persevere with it?,

Sorry to talk for so long but i am  quite distressed

Thank you for any advice
Not to over simplify your issues but a machine that is only 6 months old should not be acting this way.
I would suggest not trying to FIX it yourself as it could void the warranty.
Contact the manufacturer directly Packard Bell and voice your displeasure. This gives you a paper trail for your complaint.
Immediately after contact the retailer and let them know you have talked to the Manuf. and that you would rather resolve this without getting them involved.
They should be alot more receptive to offering you a replacement solution at this point instead of simply telling you to run the Recovery CD's.

Good Luck and remember the squeaky whell gets the grease but you have to be somewhat diligent in forcing the issue on your end.Hello

I must clarify:
Windows Vista Basic requires a recommended amount of 512MB of RAM
Windows Home Premium requires a recommended amount of 1GB

Secondly:
When you go through the process of reformatting, are you backing up your files, and then putting them on the computer again?
If so, I suspect that this may be a possible virus. My cousin had a laptop that had a virus (I have it now) that had a virus that caused constant CPU and Hard Drive usage, and basically, melted the hard drive, and cracked her desk in half (yes, it managed to reach out and physically affect something.. quite scary when you think about it).
Anyways, the following questions now appear:
Do you have an Antivirus? Is it updated? Have you done a full SCAN?
User made the following reply via PM:
Thank you for your  reply. I heard recently too that my system memory is insufficient, not even 512mb Embarrassed, i am pretty annoyed  about this. I think they should   let me trade it in for  a better one and i will add the money to it. I also though about uninstalling vista and  buying an xp disk but am not sure if it would be compatible with this system.
You asked if i backed up and reinstalled the backup after reformatting, no i dont back anything off my laptop up atall, as i have  2 external hardrives, one which is 320 gb, and also back  up important stuff  to dvds. When i have reformated i reinstall the  programs that i use again,  which is very few because  i dont want to  slow it down even more and also i  barely have any vista ready applications, but hundreds of xp  stuff which is annoying.
AS for the virus issue, i have used  a few different ones  including norton  internet security, but since unistalled due to it slowing my system down further, also tried mcafee, kapersky, avg, and  panda, and  i check for updates for which ever i am using at any time on a daily basis and no viruses have ever been found but has been some spyware which has ALWAYS been  eradicated upon detection.

Thanks again for your input
(My reply follows now:)
I dont think that your speed reduction is caused Vista, but, as for Antivirus:
Make sure that avast! is the only Antivirus scanner on your computer. Once you have done that, go into avast  (by finding it in the Start menu, or right clicking the avast icon in your system tray, and selecting "Start Avast Antivirus")
Once in Avast, Select Menu from the top left hand side, and select "Schedule Boot-time scan"
In "Areas to Scan" select All Local Disks, and select "Scan Archive Files"
Check Advanced options, and change the first action to "Move Infected Files to Chest"
On the second default action (for system files) select Ignore or move for System files.

Select Schedule, and allow Avast to restart your computer. This scan may take a while (Ill take a guess at 1-3 hours)

Why do I recommend this?
It is possible that, through your external drives, you might have contracted a virus. Thanks for the replies to my message, i do appreciate it alot . I decided to contact the people with whom my insurance is with and asked them where i would stand with regards to my warranty if i were to have more memory fitted and they said as long as its fitted by pc world then there is no problem. So i took my laptop ALONG  this last  monday and had   it upgraded to 2 GB.  THe system  is okay so far   and i can now even listen  to mp3s while on the internet etc something which i could never do before because it stopped  dead.

THanks again

Solve : Lost audio?

I got a new computer with VISTA installed on it, and had to change to XP Professional so it would be compatible with the company I'm going to work for.  The problem is, while I had audio with the Vista program, the new install (which was done for me by a pro) seems to have lost it.  When I try to get it turned on, I get the message "No audio device installed."  Can you please tell me why this happened and how I can fix it?  Thanks so much for your HELP.  What happened to the "pro" guy?
You may need to install sound card drivers."What happened to the "pro" guy?

He works for the people that are helping me get set up for the job, and I have to go  through them to get to him.  I start online training Wed, and it takes a while to get him out here to do the work, so I was hoping there might be something I could do myself.    If I do need the sound card drivers, is there a way I can do it, or do I have to wait and hope the guy can get out here before Wed?

Since your computer came with Vista, you'll have to experiment a little.

Start with Vista audio DRIVER:

If that doesn't work...
I'd start on page 2, here:
http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/SOUND-CARD/REALTEK/index2.shtml
and try Asus V3-M2A690G Realtek ALC883 Audio Driver V5.10.0.5345

Thank you so much for your help.  I do appreciate it.  I will try to see if I can make it work and let you know once I've figured it out.  Again, thank you for all your help. You're welcome

Solve : 1GB Kingston Flash Drive for Under a Buck?

Quote
That's right. You can get a Kingston 1GB USB flash drive from Buy.com for under a buck--or depending on where you live, absolutely free. (As I write this newsletter, the drive's still AVAILABLE. But your mileage may vary.)

My buddy, Suzanne M., spotted this gem in one of her freebie group newsletters last week. She bought one and paid 92 cents (Tennessee tax). I got mine for 72 cents (California tax). In fact, I got two.

And listen, if you don't move on this--like right now--you're going to miss out. You just know they're going to run out quickly and I don't want to hear your kvetching.

Here's the scoop:

   1. Head for Buy.com.
   2. Add one Kingston flash drive to your cart.
   3. At the Checkout page, click on the Google checkout option to get the $10 discount.
   4. Make sure you choose budget shipping--which is free.
Looks valid, but the stock ran out :/
Yes, they did run out. However, they got it back in stock. I ordered mine on the 19th and it's on it's way to me.
Darn it - Buy.com won't ship to my locale...

I didnt start using alternative storage methods for floppies until two years ago. I purchased a 37MB flash drive from Staples for $7.43, and looking at it now, its a bit depressing, yet, still incredibly useful. Now I have a 2GB CruizerMicro Flash device from Sandisk. It works great.

Previous problems have been:

I have a question about NoScript, because it seems to be very popular download.
Does it have any effect on regular surfing, like preventing you form seeing certain things?
Short answer - yes.  But only if you want it to.
It can be configured to block all types of scripts, including Java, Javascript, Flash, Silverlight, etc.
However, you can then add sites to your whitelist and allow one or more of these scripts for any site.
It's a very powerful tool which can HELP keep you safer, and it can ALSO be used as a content blocker (it replaced Flashblock for me) to block almost anything you don't want.
Give it a try - I was dubious at first after a friend recommended it, but I tried it out and afetr a week, I won't use Firefox without it.Thanks, Calum for that info..

Solve : Auto Backup Outlook?

I am trying to find an auto backup system.  I have Maxtor, but its auto backup system will not backup outlook files.  Maxtor tech support states that its system does not back up all files, including outlook, leaving me to wonder what else Maxtor is SKIPPING.  I can manually EXPORT the outlook files each night, but that is tedious and Maxtor may be skipping other files.  I have to believe that somewhere there is a system that will actually backup everything.  Any ideas?

I have a desktop PC, using WINDOWS XP Pro.

Thank you for your replies.http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/syncback-hub.html

Try this , it can backup locked files on NTFS systems that have the volume shadow copy service running (That's win2000 and up)Exactly what Maxtor software are you referring to?

Why not just use Windows Task Scheduler to periodically backup your Outlook.pst file?Thank you, Panboy and Soybean.  I'll LOOK at Syncback.  I wonder if it will work with the Maxtor HD that I already have.  I'll ask its sales team about that.

The software that I use with the Maxtor is the software that came with it, Retrospect EXPRESS HD.  The Windows Task Scheduler is a good idea, but I still wonder what else the Retrospect Express HD is skipping.

Solve : why 44100HZ smaple rate is prevailing?

Answer»

I used a third party software to rip the music from a music CD, but just GOT no idea
which sample RATE is better, so I just chose 44100HZ and 48000HZ and so it CREATED two MP3 files for me.

It seems that human EARS can't really distinguish which of these two MP3 files has 48000HZ.

I notice that most of the MP3s I brought from the INTERNET are all of 44100HZ.
Is it a national standard that all MP3 must be created with sample rate of 44100HZ?

any idea?

Solve : Very baffleing situation?

This ONE is weird and I am not sure where to go next - long story short - Ex roomate that has 25 years+ programming, unemployed, bored, (criminal?) networked my laptop and desktop into his computers. I did not realize the scope of it for 6-7 months and starting looking into it when my laptop was running slow. I discovered that he had more admin/domain authority that I did. ASKED him to take me off network and he would not. Discovered hidden partitioned 4 GB area on both. Longer story short - I moved, reformatted laptop, NEW hard drive on other, windows XP prof.  Have had 5 "techs" to my house who say that they are securing my system. My roomate was also linked up to my desktop with router.  I then proceed to find ADDITIONAL passwords in my system - computer name changed, remote access turned on after I turn off - etc. I am running Norton and can see some stuff that bypasses Norton - backdoor g-1-1354, port 9000, remote services running that I as Admin cannot turn off, etc. This is where it gets weird. He locked me out of my Pronto remote control, locked me out of my cellphone (will change both asap) and had asked me for a bluetooth device for my phone that I ran over in my garage and was going to throw away. My last computer was also a new one - I found weird stuff in that one also - IS there any WAY for him to get in through neighbors unsecured wireless or through automating something in regards to remote controller? I have to stretch as this is frustrating - I have a business and have had no usuage for 6 weeks. Network security specialist?? If there is 1 minute unsecured when Norton is being updated or router is being set up can he get in? Please any info is welcome for this bizarre and frustrating situation.Oh dear!

Your easiest option is to completely frag the hard drive of any machine he has touched.  Also reset and reconfigure any router that he's had the use of.

On the hard drive front, reformatting is not enough.  You must delete the partitions (using FDISK, or XP's installation routine) and start again.

I don't know where in the world you're based, but your ex-room mate's activities would certainly be illegal in the UK.Before you start removing things, go talk to your police officers. This is very serious and you will probably need them as evidence. Personally, I'd advise against wireless in the future. This is easy.

Grab him by the throat and.... ummm, use your imagination 8-)

That may limit your legal options though.

Well actually I think Neil's suggestion is probably the best thing to do.

ThanksIf you make a copy of the CD,how does the copy work?

Sometimes where the original goofs up a copy will work fine.Hi

i have COPIED that to my h disc, and it does not work   :-? :-? :-/

but i WANT to upload it to site (because i often format my entire h disc)

Is there any site offering such a huge upload?

An upload is questionable, a download is not.

Your Printer Manufacturer website should have technicle support on the drivers and a download location on their website, most likely with a smaller download size as well (providing that it is limited to the driver itself)Grab a GoogleMail account and mail it there.

Surely all you need is available for download from the manufacturer's website though?

Solve : HP Deskjet Printer light blinking?

Answer»

The top lights continues to blink on my HP Deskjet 612C Printer; error says I cannot print to LP1 as it is not connected.  I've tried two different 600 series deskjet printers and they both do the same thing.  I've checked all connections, etc. What is your operating system, and how did you set the printer up?Have you previously used Parallel port, i.e. LP1, devices with that computer?  Have you previously used Parallel port printers with it?  Are you using the cables that came with the printers?  Does the HP Deskjet 600 series require a BIOS setting to ECP, EPP etc.?  See this HP page: HP Photosmart Products  -  Setting the Port to ECP Mode.  Check you printer manual for info on it's requirements.I have used this printer for a long time on this computer (laptop, Inspiron 4000, win 2000) and also with various computers and have always used the par. port. The printer just stopped working and the light continues to blink.  I am unable to even realign the cartridges.  I will check on advice from Soybean.I checked out everything using Soybean's link and all seems ok; resume light is still blinking though. Can you find ANOTHER computer somewhere that you can try installing ONE or both of those printers on?  That COULD be a big help in troubleshooting this.

Also, can you borrow a known-working Parallel printer from someone to try on your computer or try connecting another Parallel device such as a scanner?

I'm wondering whether you have a faulty parallel port on your motherboard.  If so, an add-on card such as  Koutech PCI to Parallel Card Model IO-PP210 - Retail might be the solution.I hooked the printer onto another computer and the light still blinks, so it's not the port.  If a printer is moved or bumped, does it get out of ALIGNMENT somehow and needs to be realigned:-?Did you replace an ink cartridge just before this happened?  My Canon printer usually prompts me to go through an alignment procedure after replacing ink cartridges.  I think your printer should at least be doing something similar rather than not doing anything.  Do you know for sure that the ink tanks are not empty?  Are you sure the tanks are properly seated?

How long since that printer last worked?  Did you have the printer disconnected from the computer for awhile and then re-connect it?  Perhaps you should inspect your cables to make sure there are no bent pins.  I did not replace the cartridge and have replaced the power cord and cable; it was printing before I moved the printer just two days ago. Are there any access PANELS or doors closed improperly ? ?Nothing unusual :-?I've checked everything;but it's still blinking.

It may have expired.  Yes, it may have expired , but maybe it just needs to be realigned since it was moved (or at least, this is what I was told). If you cannot connect to it, a realignment would seem impossible.

Solve : How to build a computer !!?

Answer»

The subject says it all, I would like to build a computer, are there any BOOKS on the subject, what is the best hardware, whare do I get the components.

As you can SEE I'm a complete beginer on the subject, any suggestions will be most greatfuly accepted

TOMHave a long read here: Build Your Own PC, and then shop at www.newegg.com or www.tigerdirect.com.  Of course, there are many other sources of parts, both online and regular retail shops; the two I mentioned are ones I'm familiar with and I'm comfortable recommending them to you.Nice link there soybean, I'll have to refer my friend to that as he wants to build his own . . . otherwise I'll end up doing it for him, for free of course (why should I be paid for my time and effort?  What a silly thought . . .)
There are many sources of parts, I'm in the UK so I have no knowledge of parts and pricing elsewhere in the world.
Tiger DIRECT and Newegg seem to be the most recommended places though, as mentioned.
If you want suggestions on components, we'll need more info, such as your budget and what you want to do with the PC.Reading is more important than any other aspect. Some folks spend a LOT of money on parts without knowing if they will work together, slap them together and hope for the best. Sometimes it works, but frequently not. Sometimes expensive parts are ruined in the process.A bit of a note:
I have personaly used NewEgg, and I would like to comment that their service is very
reliable
easy to use
great for beginners
WELL organized
good at shipping

Their prices are also very well.
I havent used TigerDirect, but I have heard good things as well

/me giving his opinion every day Quote

<snip>

I second all those.  Newegg is a great place to purchase stuff from.  Very good service and you usually get things a day or two before they say it will arrive.

I have a very good friend that buys a lot of things from Tiger Direct and he says they are really good.

Also, I agree with GX1_Man, reading up before-hand is a very important part of the building process.

Solve : VISTA Benchmarks?

Answer»

The result is: the same, or slower, than XP.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2007/01/29/xp-vs-vista/

What's all the hubbub, bub?Not all that surprising REALLY.  I'd love to SEE the same results CONDUCTED on W98...  The only faintly amusing thing is the MS always claims its latest offering is more efficient, faster, ETC.  The opposite is always true.  So when MS claims Vista is more SECURE, more capable, more rewarding, etc, what are we to think...?

Solve : sticking keys?

Answer»

Help!! I have a Compaq Presario 2100 that is about six or seven years OLD. I am having problems with keys sticking. Right now it is the home KEY. Before that it was the "c" key. The keyboard has been taken apart and the connections examined. The home key has been taken off and cleaned. So far there is nothing obvious. I am anxious to solve the problem since it can be pretty difficult typing or doing much of anything when the home key periodically sticks.how far down did you disassemble the keyboard? did you simply pop off and clean the buttons or did you actually clean the contacts on the PCB (Printed Circuit Board)?I popped off and cleaned the buttons and re-seated the contacts on the PCB, but I did not clean the contacts. Thanksthat should do it then. please inform us if the problem still persists.I bet that at some point this keyboard has had a coffee encounter...

If you can lift the membrane, then a quick WIPE with an alcohol-based cleaner is your best bet.  But for all the effort involved, YUO could always replace the keyboard...I get a new ONE every year...PS2 of course.

Solve : .sfv file?

Answer»

I recently downloaded some freeware. All that was included was
filename.001 through filename.040 or something similar. Also a filename.sfv I did some searches and downloaded a program called Quick SFV. All it does is check the files. How do I convert them or extract them or do whatever I need to do?? Please help.Perhaps the files are not for your operating system? It doesent sound LIKE they are.

You may want to try checking the website and finding requirements, it sounds like you have Macintosh files.WinRar...I have WINRar. What would I need to do with it to make these files work? They are CRC checkers to verify the integrity of DLoaded files...what KIND of freeware needed 40 RAR files ? ?

I think we're not GETTING the full story here.

Solve : Invulnerable virus protection.?

Answer»

I got a wii for christmas. I hooked up my wireless to it =]. I downloaded the internet channel off of the wii channel.

I am typing from my wii right now and its TAKING a very long time, but anyway, I am COMPLETELY invulnerable to ANY viruses/trojans/worms, EVERYTHING. Because it is not a standard OS.

Am I correct? Or is this just a myth?Oh, right now, for a limited time, you can live in your virus free world. But somoene somewhere, is looking at the firmware and codeing, and there will be a virus.

I'd say you have a while before that happens...Myth.

I don't know what Wii can do but if you can run some kind of executable PROGRAM you can get from the Internet, or anything from the Internet can access the Wii's harddrive, a virus is possible.Well, first, I can't download anything from the wii, and it won't run any UNSIGNED scripts or something....I still think of it as invunerable. =]For now. But where there's a will, there's a way. Someone will FIND a way. But for now, yeah, you're fine. Just don't let it get to your head. Remember the cell-phone viruses? That used to be impossible as well. Quote

For now. But where there's a will, there's a way.
- - -

Did you mean, "where there's a wii, there's a way." ?

Haha. yeah, but I guess i'll live it up with the Wii while it's still invunerable...

viruses, though annoying and a nuisance, are EXTREMELY powerful when it comes to infecting a system.

You could download a file, and without even executing it, just the copying and pasting of it will execute itself.

Solve : Laptop Monitors In Sunlight?

Answer»

I knew my Notebook wasn't going to make it out-of doors, back after I bought it in 1999, when outside sun light WOULD come in through the window.

However, now that the market got churned up for the portable models,

Our friends the manufacturers have suddenly come out with all kinds of magazines and TV ADVERTISEMENTS, letting the general public know that your office can be the park BENCH or your outdoor patio!

I would like to know not only how good these are for viewing in the sunlight
but how do they ACTUALLY work ?

Anyone up for answers ?

Jp

Due to lack of personal experiance I cannot say for CERTAIN, but provided you avoid direct sunglare the monitor should work fine, I think.

"but how do they actually work ?"  :-? Do you mean how do monitors work?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_displayThey're OK in sunlight, but the glossy models are worse than standard screen notebooks in strong light, as they reflect it more.
I have a glossy screen, and I find the colours and everything to be very rich and detailed, but strong light can be a problem.
In strong light, you can turn the brightness up to overcome it, but this will have an impact on battery life.
Hope this helps.Thank you, Yes, on how the monitor works ? , . .what I was after, was what I thought, . .it takes battery power to turn up the brightness to counter the sun lights dimming glare.

Solve : Lazy Man Office Equipment?

Answer»

Have any of you folks seen this lazy MAN setup?

http://www.officeorganix.com/Eropod500.htmEvery picture was UNUSUAL. Standing at a computer? Three screens over a bed? One screen over a lazy boy? And such a small and petite device also.

I agree that something might be helpful for the bedridden, but I don't know if this is it. But for $2000-4000 dollars it should be within everyone's reach (no pun intended).I think it would be a great thing, to tell you the truth. Get more people out of their computer chairs, and into a lazy boy, or a bed.

Have you ever taken a computer and placed it on a HIGH countertop where the keyboard is in reach from standing? Its quite a comfortable way to compute to tell you the truth, everything is in reach, and your not slouched, you can type much faster. That suspended over the bed picture looked like that monitor COULD slide on down onto your head pretty easily.   Quote

thats the first thing i thought...better get a LIGHT monitor just incase. I realize it is over priced and probably intended for

modern side of lazy. So,I just got a few LOL's out of
it.

Free online virus, spyware, and adware removal and scanning tool provided by TrendMicro:
http://www.trendmicro.com/hc_intro/default.asp

An extra note: Due to the nature of most P2P Applications, most protections should detect Kazaa and other p2p's as either virus/spyware/adware.
This is simply because most of the money is gained from advertising.
There isnt much that can be DONE about it

For Kazaa, if such a program is detected, it can be removed, but it will definitely be ADDED again later on the next program run. Uninstalling Kazaa completely will remove the software.
