Solve : PC-to-phone calls - no equivalent 2 phone numb pad?

Answer»

During the past week, I've used Yahoo! Messenger's PC-to-PHONE service a few times to call a regular phone from my PC.  Today, I made a call which was answered by an automated system and I was prompted to respond to questions by hitting a number.  You know the routine, right?

Of course, I had to hang up and use a regular phone, since there's no way to provide such responses.  The keypad on the computer keyboard had no interaction with the PC-to-phone software once a connection is made with a phone.

I'm sure there's no way AROUND this.  Just thought I mention it in case anyone has used another PC-to-phone service, such as Skype, and can actually do this.Search for "tone dialling" in the HELP files...?I couldn't find anything in the help files but I finally discovered that a keypad can be displayed on screen by clicking on a small icon in the dial-up panel.  It looks like this:

Numbers can be sent either by clicking on them with the mouse or hitting the number keys on the keyboard.   Skype can dial such numbers, you can either press the keypad number (though, there is a delay) or use the keyboard (but UPPER number charecters, [email protected]#$%^&*() have difficulties)Quit swearing...LOL, Patio

Almost seems like it

Solve : Third Party Reading my page??

Answer»

Alright I had a couple problems today when I looked at my ACCOUNT and found that 1,000 dollars had been taken out. I have been using regions.com to check it and everytime I did this came up.

I want to know if this third party could take my account passwords and such and be able to get into my account and use my money and all. I called and had my account frozen but I still want to know if it was this third party in that message that came up that took my account details or if it was something else. The money DESCRIPTION/payee was WESTERNUNION COM MONEYThis description of your problem applies to a term called "Phishing" meaning websites or services that try and get your credit card, SSN, or other informaton from you to comit credit fraud.

These websites can be very hidden among good websites.

Unfortunately, I myself cant give you too much information on the specific message, however, I will reccomend this:
Please visit http://www.siteadvisor.com and download and install their free site advisor program for InternetExplorer and FireFox, the tool is free for personal use, and is from MCAFEE.
It will indicate wether a site has been marked as safe or not.

(Upgrading to InternetExplorer 7 will also protect you against phishing. )
I got the Regions Bank scam email myself. If you clicked on one of the links, you're screwed. The links were redirects and were bounced off GOOGLE and ebay. Kill the account and OPEN a new one. Change all your passwords and user names any other pertinent info concerning your banking. Notify your bank of the scam. Most banks do have a fraud protection, and the fraud should be somewhat repairable. Do what 2k_dummy said, and call the bank. Its the best you can do.remember the golden rule!!!

*ahem* REPUTABLE COMPANIES WILL NEVER ASK FOR YOU TO UPDATE YOUR BILLING INFORMATION!!!

you have to do this on your own. if you move, get a new card, new phone number, etc. it is your responsiblity to change your billing information. if you receive an email, fax, or a letter asking for you to update your billing information, it is a hoax, no matter how real it looks. (phishers know how to use photo-shop  )

a key-logger (records key strokes and commonly sends its daily logs to a predetermined person via FTP, email, IRC, etc.) may have been used to access your account, also, an unencrypted wireless connection may have allowed a phisher to intercept your password and use it to access your account as well.

Version of what, Outlook Express?  In Outlook Express, click on Help, About Microsoft Outlook Express.  ANYWAY, with Win XP, I can tell you have Outlook Express 6.

Quote

Can you logon to your email account via your web browser?  Do you know whether your ISP provides that option to you?  If not, you need to find out.  And, you need to find out whether your ISP may have some spam filtering system screening your email and perhaps blocking some of it from coming through.

And i hope Spydoctor is not the only protection you have...waspkfd.....  You should check with your ISP ........ It's more than likely that they have both spam as well as junk mail filters activated on your mail account.

dl65  Get thunderbird. To use Outlook express, you must set up your email accounts first.

If you do not set up your accounts, no emails will be displayed.

Other than that, if you are using Outlook Express, you should just delete your junk mail.

If you know your POP3 server, HTTP server, or STMP server INFORMATION, you can use either Thunderbird, or Outlook... either will work, though T-Bird has BETTER spam association filtering.

Solve : i pulled the power cord out while it was on?

Answer»

I know it was a really stupid thing to do but i pulled the plug while the computer was on. Now it won't start up at all. What should i do? How can i fix this? What did i do to it?What does it do when hit the power button?  Do you hear any fans running, any noise at all?nothing happens at all when i try to turn it on. There is a blinking green light in the back of the CPU or whatever. I don't know what that means. But nothing happens at all. Did i fry something? Why did you pull the plug?  How soon did you plug it back in after you first UNPLUGGED it, almost immediately, or after a few minutes or longer?  Do you plug it into a surge protector or directly into a wall outlet?

What brand and model is your computer?i plugged it in i think a few minutes after. It's a Dell. I plugged it into the outlet. What do u think is wrong with it?I believe you may have fried something.  The damage may be limited to the power supply (PS) unit  inside your computer or might inlcude the motherboard or other components.  I suggest you take it to a repair and TELL them what happened.

Replacing a Power Supply is not difficult for anyone who has some experience upgrading computer components.  I recently REPLACED a PS to upgrade from one rated 250 Watts to one rated 400 Watts.  So, it can be a do-it-yourself project if you've had some experience installing or upgrading hard drives, CD drives, memory, sound cards, video cards, etc.

But, again, the damage may go beyond the power supply and some TROUBLESHOOTING and testing may be necessary.  A repair shop is going to be best equipped to do that.

And, by the way, always plug your computer into a good surge protector, not directly into a wall outlet.  A reference: http://www.howstuffworks.com/surge-protector.htm
May I also suggest the following:

Look at the back of your computer (the Tower) where the power cord plugs in
Is there a switch there with a I or O in it? Switch it to the O (off) then to the I (on) and then try starting it up by pressing the front power button if it doesent start already.

Solve : dry ink cartridge?

Answer»

I have an Epson RX620 inkjet printer/scanner which uses 6 SMALL cartridges.  The problem is that I do not use it very often and the machine SAYS ink is low or out.  I know this is not true since I hardly used it and can hear plenty of ink when cartridge is shaken.  I guess I NEED to print comething in color every few weeks to keep the ink flowing.
Is there any way to reactivate the "empty" cartridges and use them??  Any ideas would be appreciated.  :-?Not really, unfortunately.  Most inkjet cartridges object to be left unused.  They will dry up and can even damage your printer's print heads.  Occasional "therapeutic" use is recommended.Sometimes, it can be done manualy, contact the manufacturer or refer to your owners MANUAL....

Other than that, click Start, Control Panel, Printers, and right click on the malfuntioning printer, and see if anything like "CLEAN heads" is there, if not, click Properties and see if it is there.

Solve : Downloads start automatically.?

Answer»

When I downloaded something today, instead of clicking cancel, I accidentally unchecked a box, and now every time I go to download something, it doesn't ask me what folder I want to SAVE it in, it just saves it to a temporary folder and opens the download. This is annoying and potentially harmful! I looked in Control Panel - INTERNET options, but I couldn't find anything to solve my problem.

Please help?I think we'll need a LITTLE more info.  Do you MEAN downloading via Internet Explorer, Firefox, or what?

Solve : complete system purge?

okay my friend purchased a computer from e-bay (one of the stores) and it isn't working properly. but in order to SEND it BACK, he NEEDS to clear the hard drive (everything, including the os). how WOULD he do this? You can use a W2K or XP disk to format it or download a boot disk. And let your friend know beforehand that he just might VOID his warranty by doing this...

Solve : Scanner Calibration?

Answer»

I have a CanoScan LiDE25 Scanner which adds an unacceptable AMOUNT of noise. On my last PC (800 X 600), I went into 'advanced settings' and re-calibrated it, which seemed to reduce the PROBLEM,  but not COMPLETELY. I now have changed to a new High Res laptop (1920 x 1600), and the same problem is there ... maybe worse. So I go into the same settings and all the buttons, etc are hidden, and I can't get to them to operate on them. I have changed the screen res to the old 800 X 600 and larger, but I can't access these options. I would be so grateful for any suggestions.Have you installed the latest drivers from Cannon?

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportDetailAct&fcategoryid=235&modelid=11463I have just done as you suggested, and the problem remains. I had an issue with this a month or two back when I tried to install a printer. I just could get to areas I needed to, and had to come around via another method to install it. Frustrating stuff! I suppose I can ring Canon Australia on Monday and see what they say.  :-?I've worked it out. Because of the high res screen, I had my fonts turned up larger. I adjusted that back and could get into the calibration. And now I also have the latest driver installed, which hopefully might improve the scan QUALITY as well we will see. Thanks very much for your input. copespeak,it is good to see a post solve their own problem.Good going! [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

Solve : Disable PeoplePC's Browser?

Answer»

I signed up for PeoplePC internet and now I want to disable their browser which starts up with the internet connection.
It has no TOOLBAR, you can not right click anything on the web page, and you will be disconnected from the internet if you close it.
I use Firefox so this browser is useless for me.

How can I disable it?Do you KNOW how to use DUN?

Are you using windows XP?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/305549

http://www.restartoffice.com/windowsXP1.htmThank you for the links, street1.

I had already TRIED that trick but I was getting an error message when I tried to connect that said that my user name and/or password was incorrect.
When I dissconnected from the regular connection, Windows asked me if I wanted to reconnect and it showed my username and it was diferent than what I had typed.
Insted of it SAYING username, it said isp6#[email protected].
When I typed it in the manual connection setup, it worked.

Now I can connect to the internet without PeoplePC's browser. It is nice to use an ISP provider and not use their software.

Now you are getting your moneys worth.

Glad you got it figured out.

Solve : computer going nuts?

Answer»

I have developed problems with my computer (Dell Dimension 4700). I think it's my MOUSE but I'm not sure (FAIRLY new mouse). Every time I move the cursor over anything, it opens up; if I try to highlight anything, it will highlight some of it or all of it or none of it or TOTALLY disappear when I release the button. I work in PageMaker 7.5 to publish a small newpaper. Whenever I try to do anything like hit the T for type set, the box opens up to edit the text size, etc. I try to highlight a story and I will only get part of it or as soon as I release the mouse, the highlight disappears. If I'm on the internet and hit the back button, it will go back twice. If I have two windows open and close one with the X in the corner, they both close. In PageMaker, I can click in the story and the edit story windows opens up. I've tried getting a new mouse (HELPED for a little while), I have reinstalled PageMaker. Nothing seems to help. I'm really not sure what to do next. Any help is MOST appreciated. Thanks.Have you run a virus scan lately... sounds pretty virus-related to me

-John

EDIT: I remember having a mouse once though that malfunctioned and would click randomly... but if you just bought a new mouse then it shouldn't be doing that. If it's a PS/2 mouse did you check for bent pins, etc?Or could it be a wireless mouse ? ?
If so CHANGE the batteries and try another channel.

Solve : PeoplePC's service agreement?

Answer»

I have a few questions about PeoplePC's service agreement. http://www.peoplepc.com/online/legals.asp?locid=1&pageid=4

1.      How long is "a reasonable period" in the following paragraph and is that normal for an agreement?
         Quote

Members may not USE the Service on a standby or inactive basis in order to maintain a CONNECTION. Continuous Internet access through the Service may be limited by idle timeout procedures. The use of any electronic or mechanical means to facilitate a continued connection, including but not limited to autodialer features, "pinging" software and automatic logins to mail servers, is prohibited. PeoplePC may limit the length of sessions to a reasonable period, as determined by PeoplePC, after which sessions may automatically be terminated.
(from section two of the agreement)

2.      Same question as before.
         Quote
PeoplePC may from time to time in its sole discretion establish, modify, or discontinue operating policies and procedures governing operation of the Service. PeoplePC may, among other things:

1. prevent bulk email from entering or leaving any email account maintained through the Service;
2. delete email if it has not been ACCESSED by you within a time set by PeoplePC from time to time;
3. not process or store email due to space limitations set by PeoplePC from time to time;
4. make available to third parties information relating to the Service and Members, subject to PeoplePC's Privacy Policy;
5. establish idle timeout and session length procedures that will cause an automatic log off of an Internet session after a period of time set by PeoplePC; and
6. change or discontinue any functionality or feature of the Service.

PeoplePC will not be responsible or liable for loss, deletion or failure to store or accept emails or other information. The use of any software that circumvents or impedes PeoplePC's automatic timeout procedures is prohibited.
(from section eleven of the agreement)

3.      Why is the website digitally signed by Earthlink Inc? Kip........  I will answer your questions in the reverse order.

Why is the website digitally signed by Earthlink Inc?

EarthLink to buy PeoplePC for $10 million
Deal adds more than 500,000 subscribers to 4th-biggest ISP
Because PeoplePC is now owned by Earthlink Inc.

Quote
How long is "a reasonable period" in the following paragraph and is that normal for an agreement?

I would think, that if you were to check , there probably isnt a specific time ......
You must remember that this is dial-up and the ISP doesnt want people just sitting there ....with no data being sent or received .......

Members may not use the Service on a standby or inactive basis in order to maintain a connection. Continuous Internet access through the Service may be limited by idle timeout procedures.

Your questions 2 and 3......are covered  by the statement above ....... It's PART of the first part of the user agreement .

This sort of situation is common .

On the other hand , if you want something other than what they offer , you can probably find other ISPs who will charge you more.

You should really consider broadband or hispeed cable if it's available in your area ...... it's more money, but if your online a lot it's the better way to go.

dl65

Thank you for the information, dl65.

I wonder why Earthlink Inc. would offer Internet sevice as 'Earthlink' for about $22.00 per month and as 'PeoplePC' for about $11.00 per month?Kip.......  I don't have the answer to that , but why dont you ask Earthlink ?
This link suggests to me that this is differant than the other service you mentioned .

If you mean the price, $9.95 is for the first three months and I have been looking at the regular price which is $21.95.I believe that, if you compare the two services, you'll find some extra benefits with Earthlink.  Also, I believe you won't see such limitations in Earthlink's user agreement as the ones you highlighted for PeoplePC.  You might try PeoplePC and, if you have some negative experiences, then switch to Earthlink.I decided to try PeoplePC's 30-day free trial. 5.6Ghz eh? Don't seem legitimate to me. I've have seen a p4 3.2Ghz overclocked to 4.1Ghz though. It may be possible depending on what type of motherboard is in the computer and the exact Pentium D number and what type of cooling agents are INVOLVED. Even though I think this is theorically impossible. The below put me in the ROTFLMAO Position.

the $50.00 dollar shipping itself is a joke. Most people lie about the GHz of their processors on Ebay.
I suppose one person did it so they all did do theirs didn't seem inferior.
They normally add the clock speeds of the cores together, or use "rated speed" as "real speed", eg an Athlon 4000+ is a 4GHz Athlon if you listen to them, and a 3GHz dual core is a 6GHz CPU.
But you're right, the whole thing is a joke. Quote

Solve : Stuck at 640x480 + 16 bit color.?

Answer»

Not sure exactly where I should put this, so I'll put it here..

Long story short my brother somehow killed the computer, after a few hours I managed to bring it BACK to life, except now the screen settings are stuck on 640x480 and 16 bit color. I can't change the settings no matter what..

From what I've looked up so far, everything tells me that the only fix is to go Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Monitor -> Properties.. and to fix it from in there. The only problem is that the 'Properties' button under the 'Monitor' tab is all greyed out and unclickable, so I can't get in there to do what everything tells me I have to do to fix this problem..

Also I have the DISC with the drivers and documentation for my monitor, but again to install it everything tells me I have to go into the same Monitor -> Properties section that I can't get into. So I'm lost.

Heck, I even wiped the comp and reinstalled xp and started from scratch and the settings are still not letting my change them..

However just now I noticed an 'Adapter' tab under Settings -> Advanced.. Right next to the 'Monitor' tab.. Now at the bottom of that is a 'List All Modes' button. So I WENT in there and selected '1024 by 768, 256 colors, Default Refresh' so now i have just about the right size, but all the colours are royally screwed up and I still can't alter the settings via the settings tab, which says my Color quality is 'Low (8 bit).

Needless to say, my brain hurts. The monitor has nothing to do with the solution. You need to reinstall your video CARD drivers. Do you have a disk with these? What video card is in there? If you don't know run Everest Home, make a report and post it here.

Solve : Why am I prompted to access my clipboard??

Answer»

Why am I prompted to access my clipboard when I would like to post or submit a reply?

I find that request intrusive.  An EXPLANATION of its purpose is a request.

Does everyone else have to perform this task?  Incedently, when I deny the procedure, my posting a remark is denied.    That's never happened to me.
What browser are you using?
What OS?Posting a remark where?

Also, what are you using for virus protection?I've seen it a few times (can't remember which browser though I've got a feeling it's IE).

It's quite useful in that should there be a problem posting, you don't have to retype everything (ESPECIALLY long posts).

A quick "Google" showed that you can write scripts to access the clipboard via. the browser.

http://www.codehouse.com/javascript/tips/clipboard_send/Anything I post gets copied to my clipboard but I get no prompt. (IE)
I guess there's a setting to turn the prompt off somewhere.I've been using Firefox and this does not happen with it.  I'm curious about IE so I'm posting this with IE to see whether I get such a prompt.

Yep, I get the prompt. To disable the access to clipboard or allow it without being prompted:

1) Open the "Tools" menu

2) Click "Internet OPTIONS"

3) Go to the "Security" tab, make sure "Internet" is selected and click the "Custom Level" box.

4) Scroll down to the "SCRIPTING" section and under "Allow Programatic Clipboard Access" set it to DISABLE or ENABLE (which means allowing access without being prompted), as desired, and click OK > Yes > OK.
rlmarr, apparently you did not read my last post.  It's a feature of IE 7.  If you don't want it enabled, then disable it.   Quote

Maybe the forum is collecting information.
It's your clipboard.
Of course the forum has to also retain your posts so others can read them and without your IP address the information on the page would have no way of getting back to you. (This goes for all websites)

Solve : Can anyone tell me??

Answer»

what is a poxie and how do they work?Proxy?Yes Proxy...sorry...should have checked my spellinglana......  Proxy .....

A gateway that relays one Internet session to another.

Anonymous Proxy Servers

Anonymous proxy servers hide your IP address and thereby prevent unauthorized access to your computer through the Internet. They do not provide anyone with your IP address and effectively hide any information about you and your reading interests.

A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server, then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the specified server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy may alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes.

These results were returned in seconds simply by opening Google and typing proxy.

dl65  Ok, THANK you for the info...but can you tell me if that means if you live in say...Iowa and you visit a site that records your IP...if you have a proxy will it say that your IP is coming from ...say...CALIFORNIA so that no one will know where you are really located? Can you pick the place you want it to say you are from? and will it say that your emails are going through a server that is only located in california if you are indeed in Iowa?

I hope that all made sense! Lana......
Anonymous proxy servers hide your IP address and thereby prevent unauthorized access to your computer through the Internet. They do not provide anyone with your IP address and effectively hide any information about you and your reading interests.
I dont believe you can choose what you want the proxy to show...it would depend on where they are ....... a bit of testing would show that .......
check this page out .... http://computer.howstuffworks.com/search.php

I won't even ask you why it's necessary for you to hide your location .

dl65  Thanks for explaining that.
I don't need to hide my IP. I know some people that are being harrassed on the web sites they own. They track the IP's of visitors that leave messages. Someone that is saying bad things is claiming to be someone else but the IP is registering a different state then the person he's claiming to be lives in and the one that is leaving the bad messages is claiming its because they are using a proxy so thats why it says they are somewhere else.
So we just thought maybe we should find out just what a proxy is and how it WORKS. lana....  ok , I should mention that when you track a ip address , it will only lead you as far as the ISP's city........which is not necessarily where the person your trying to track actually lives. In order TOP go any further , you must have the cooperation of that service provider or be a law enforcement agency or some other agency which may have the right to demand such information ......

dl65
ok...so could it be a few states away?Lana ..... Possibly , but more than likely no ...... because , usually if say you lived in say Las Vegas , and you had a dsl connection ...... the odds are that you would use a local phone company or the same provider that provides the phone service. If it was cable hi speed , again you would probably use the local cable company assuming they offered cable internet service .
The thing to do is if you have the name of the service provider, see if they offer service in other areas other than the city the show as being located in .
The other thing that can be done , if the ISSUE is a serious one , report it to the abuse centre at that service provider ...... and if it borders on being unlawful, contact the local police and they will be able to go right to the person thats doing it .
dl65
Edit...... note the highlited areaok Thank you for all your help......have a great night!if im not too late, here is a website with a list of anonymuous proxies *Blocked Russian URL*/proxy/. the list on the right is where the proxy is located. (aka if you live in florida and you use an argentina proxy, your location will appear to be argentina.)  Thank you Homer! That helped me alot! Thats what I needed to know for sure! and thanks for the link!your welcome.

Solve : Memory Devices for Philips Photo Frame?

Answer»

I was given a Philips Photo Frame Model 7FF1 and have used it to display photos from my camera's SD memory card and some I downloaded to the unit's memory from my laptop via the provided USB cable and software.  What I want to do now is download a LARGER file than the unit's memory will hold (about 50 pix), but I don't know how to download to an SD card or ANOTHER device that might work, e.g., a USB DRIVE with the Type B connector.  Can SOMEONE tell me how to download to an SD memory card without having to buy a load of additional accessories?

Hey guys....ummm I own a desktop that contains 3 user account, one is for me, another one is for my parents and guest (which is currently switch off at the moment) and now i have found another one which is called "ASP.NET Machine A...'s"  :-? very weird!! I cant see it when the computer starts, only can view it through control panel - user accounts.

Can anyone TELL me if this is a bad thing, because I never seen one of these before.

Thanks GuysIt's a legitimate service running in the background that the OS needs for certain tasks...

From the Mothership

patio.  8-)The Guru is quite right.  I am a Newbie, so I will test my new found knowledge by stating what I recently learned on my own.

Go to Start>
Search>
All Files and Folders:
Type your DESIRED file; ASP.NET
It will direct you to it's source.  I learned how to determine what all files are running (especially in the "Task Manager").  You have to FIND out what they are, by going to a file extenstion dictionary.

What I don't understand and would ASK the mothership to explain is.... Why does it show up as an account--to be managed?  If it is an essential property of the OS, it should be just in the background.  You should never have to notice it just like the other million things your PC does just to operate.

Could that "essential" file be apparent now because someone is doing something clandestine?

I'm the same newbie.  I failed to recognise the first time reading your question that ASP.NET is followed by the word "Machine".  Are they connected (ASP.NET MACHINE)?    WELL I learned my own lesson, just Google it first.  It can be *censored* being my own teacher.

Wait... 3 days... holy crap! I'm taking my driver's test on my birthday! OH, crap where's my book?? AAH! WoW!That is what I got for my sixtenth birthday

A Date That Will Live IN Infamy'. :-?

That's a real special gift.Hope the test goes well
for you.Getting a drivers license is probably the best gift I have gotten thus far in my life (turned 16 a little over 5 months ago).

You have to take the test the day you get it?  I had all of my stuff done months before I went in to get MINE.  The only thing I had to do when I arrived at the DMV was take an eye test and pay $25...

Anywho, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!I just got a test scheduled -- for the 25TH. That'll give me time.

No, I don't have to take it on my birthday -- I just thought It'd be cool that I could get a license on my birthday. What state are you in Dilbert?  Sounds like the old days here in Ohio.  Now, the requirements are higher.  As I understand it, persons under the age of 18 must drive with a permit for 6 months  and they may only drive if there is a person age 21 or older with a valid Ohio drivers license in the front seat with them.  And, if you are under 18, 50 hours driving experience is required before you can get your license.  Reference: http://columbusoh.about.com/cs/government/ht/Ohio_Drivers.htmNice.

Oregon. In Oregon, in order to get a license, you must have had at least 100 hours of driving time (got it in 2006 while I was 15! ), have proof of school enrollment, completion or exemption, some form of I.D. remember dilbert, while taking your driving test, always go slow. you dont get penalized by going under the speed limit, but they deduct points if you go about 5-10 km/h over the speed limit. In Oregon, they get uppity if you're 1 MPH over. Solve : PC-to-phone calls?

Answer»

Anyone familiar with PC-to-phone calls USING Yahoo! Messenger?  http://voice.yahoo.com/phone_calls.php SAYS it would only costs 1 cent per minute for calls within the U.S.  but they also refer to this a low "initial" rate.  That seems to indicate that rate is an introductory rate but I can't find any info on regular rates, if higher.soybean...... I don't use yahoo , But I do use Skype , to go PC to PC or PC to land phone. The cost to use Skype ....pc to land line anywhere in the USA or Canada is 14.95 for the Year ...... Refered to as Skypeout. There is no cost to go PC to PC anywhere in the world .
I have been using it for about the last 6 months and have never had a dropped call, and the quality is very good .

dl65
Thanks for that info, dl65.  I'll take a look at Skype.soybean ....... When you go to the skype site , you will find all the other rates they have for their land phone to land phone as well .

dl65  A quick note on all PC to Phone services:

PC to Phone services are unable to correctly call any 911 emergency services. Though some may be able to have a pre set area code, they may be unable to complete an emergency call. Because of this reason, you should always keep a phone in your house connected to a regular phone line. (Sometimes, a phone company will allow you to call 911 when you have absolutely no services active, check with your local phone company first)

Why do I feel like a legal adviser today? Quote

Rob would be downright proud...I was aware of that.  It is stated in Yahoo!'s user agreement.  I presume Skype does the same.  Anyway, I had no intention of canceling my regular phone service, since the phone company is my DSL provider.  However, these PC-to-phone services look like a way to save a little on long distance calls.  Yes, very much so. Skype used to be FREE, and it was great being able to call other phones (that are non-PC) anywhere in the US or Canada.
And it worked as well!

Skype also has Skype In, which allows any regular phone to call your PC.

I believe Skype has a free trial period now, like 15 minutes or something (?) that you might want to try out. Quote
Rob would be downright proud...
My bosom swells.Well, folks, I just made my first phone call using Yahoo! Messenger's PC-to-phone service.  I called my mother; we talked for about 24 minutes.  She COULD hear me well; the sound quality at her end was quite good.  I using the mic that came with my webcam.  For this call, I used the computer speakers to hear her rather than the earpiece built into the mic.  I'll do some experimenting to compare that method of listening with using the earpiece built into the mic and see which seems to work best.  Perhaps there's no significant difference, assuming I have no reason to prevent others from hearing the other person's voice.soybean...  I use a lightweight headset with a fold-away boom mic when I make calls from the pc ........ ( labtec .....19.99) no fuss no mess no bother .....lol , and if Iwant to listen to music when there are other people watching television , I just push the mic out of the way and everyones HAPPY .

About £20 or so.
I sometimes use it for Skype, mainly for BF2142 though as I have a grand total of 1 Skype contact.

Sorry for lack of info, I was kinda freakin' out, but as far as os goes it is a windows xp sp2, and before this happened i had pushed the sleep button on the keyboard and it went to standby,  and then it wouldn't wake up, so i restarted it and the tower was working fine i guess (the light went on and the disk tray is fully operational) but the moniter, as i said before, was just sitting there as if the computer didnt even go on.  same with mouse and keyboard. I restarted it multiple times via the power button and always the same!!  once though it actually went to the black screen displaying system info (where it says press F1 to comtinue, or press Del. to enter setup. ) but for some reason the keyboard wasn't working at all. so i had no other option but to restart and try again, and again, and again..... Webmail = yes.    However,  (see above)  email notification of new PM s   arrives within seconds.    Wouldn't that negate your theory?

Yes, in my experience, it does just start working again magically.  I don't recall it being broken for more than 2 or 3 DAYS.  Let's see what happens tomorrow.  When it starts working again, you'll probably get a catch-up batch of notifications all at once. Quote

Look under My Computer and see if it shows up there. (It could be titled a few different things: Audio drive, Mass storage device, removable storage device)

Also, I would RECOMMEND upgrading to the newest version of Windows Media Player, Windows Media Player 11. HTTP://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/default.mspx (Note:  This is a BETA program still, however, it has reached a point in its development process that it is completely safe to use. May I also apologise if this is in the wrong thread, I was not sure what category it fell into.Do you mean http://www.google.com/ or Google?  And, what forum are you talking about?  This may work different in different forums.  Like soybean said, it does depend on if you are using some sort of (forum) code, or web programming.
Code: [Select]<a href="http://www.google.com/">Google</a>

That is HTML. Quote

anyway you can do so in this forum by using

Solve : Equivalent to Alt-Gr??

Answer»

I don't have an Alt GR - my right Alt KEY does the same as the left. Is there a way to simulate an Alt Gr without having to memorize codes like Alt-275 or something like that? That's REALLY strange.
How come you have no Alt Gr key?
I know you can CHANGE keys by messing with the registry but I'm not sure exactly how, I'll look into it for you.
Might be better to buy a new keyboard though.I've never owned a keyboard with an Alt Gr key. Also, I've never seen one that does in stores.I'm under the impression many newer keyboards do not have that.  Mine does not.  I have a Logitech Cordless Desktop LX 500.Fair enough, I've just never seen one without an Alt-Gr key.I guess it's an England thing, as I too have never seen one without Alt-Gr

What IS the POINT of the button anyway? What's gr stand for? I've never needed to use this key for anything, other than an old dos game.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AltGr_key

Now I know.I only use it for the Euro sign - € - Alt Gr and $.
Other than that, it's not really useful to me.

START->Programs->Windows Explorer

Can you locate them with Windows Explorer?    If you can,  highlight a file,  right click it, and you should get a pop up menu.   Go from there.   If you still have trouble,  COME back here and describe it.

If you can't locate them in Windows Explorer,   and if you remember the name(s) of them,    Start->Find->Files and Folders
Set it to look in all your hard drives.
Does that help you find them?

Tip:  Quick shortcut to Windows Explorer up -  Hold down the Windows key and tap the letter  E  .

Hey there:  Yep, O.K.  I found them on explorer.  But had to pull up file for the program also.  That is where I was stuck.  Once I had that file opened, I was able to copy and paste.  WORKED LIKE a CHARM.  Thanks for the advice.  Regards, El-Don

Solve : request to all the graphic people out there?

Hey EVERYONE, my NAME is Josh Mitrou aka Xero, and im the guitarist/vocalist in the unsigned band Bezerk Fury, and i need help from all you image people out there. Our band needs a logo and a myspace layout, but im afraid we are a bit short on money, seeing as we just payed for use of a recording studio to record some demos. Even though we can not pay ANYONE who makes a logo or a myspace layout incorparating that layout, we will however be forever grateful towards them and if we get signed, we will put a THANKYOU to you in the liners. You can search for us on myspace, but theres no point yet, as we don't have anything on our site, as the rest of the band wanted to wait until we had a logo/ layout. In REGARDS to the actual logo, something along the lines of a fantasy/gothic type font, preferably with jagged edges, that just has to say the bands name. the layout should just have a Bezerk Fury logo in the background, and i leaver it up to you as to how the rest of the layout looks, but it has to look metal. If you deciede that you are interested, email us at bezer[email protected] with a logo or ideas for a layout, and we will get back to you as soon as we can. Many thanks, Bezerk Fury

Solve : OT - Contact details?

Answer»

Hi all.
I was just wondering why the contact options are restricted to email, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, MSN and Yahoo.
Many sites don't include all of those, but I think Xfire and Skype would be good additions if it's possible.
I think it's probably the FORUM software and not something that's changeable?
But PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong.
Just thought I'd ADD my VOICE and say that people do use Xfire and Skype, including me, and I'm sure people would like to see them added if possible.
If it's not, I'll try and find an email ADDRESS for YaBB to contact them and tell them this if it's possible. It is the software and I think you can add Xfire and Skype to Yabb through mods (haven't looked for mods yet). But you can contact Yabb directly just by going here.OK, thanks.

Solve : PC hangs up when booted?

Answer»

Hi - I'm running Win XP on a Dell Dimension 4500.  Recently when I turn on the machine, the opening screen that shows "Windows XP" HANGS up and the blue progress line (not sure what it is called) keeps scrolling across the PAGE.  The only way I can get out of it is to shut the PC down and start it up again.  When I do this, I get a screen that gives me the option of opening in a save mode or doing a normal start up.  I just let the machine do it's thing and start up normally.  When I do this second attempt to start, everything then runs normally.  Can someone please tell me why my machine "stalls out" when I first try to start it.  And how do I cure the problem.  Perhaps my PC is telling me that it is getting ready to die    Thanks in advance for what ever assistance you can offer.  John BHave you tried booting in safe mode and choosing Last Known Good Configuration?

Edit:SNAP!Hi - And thanks for the advice.  I guess my pc is like the CAR you take to the mechanic so he can fix the squeek - when you get there it won't squeek any more.  Well, that is sort of what has happened to my pc - it starts up correctly now.  Maybe it was reading my mind about opting for a new pc    At any rate it now operated like it should and I really appreciate the assistance.  John in El Paso  Welcome Aboard John...LIST your current protection programs for that machine and we can steer you in the right direction. Solve : DirectX, Drivers, and other unknown problems?

Answer»

Firstly, I have internet, but don't expect to see me here very often, its Dial-Up until we get out high speed.
(To increase their speed quality, they decrease image quality. This kind of sucks)

I am having a hardware/driver/Windows issue, and since this is my favorite board (the Others board), and since this problem relates to a few things, I will put it here. If there are any moderators that feel different, please move the post.

We just got a new GRAPHICS card, specifically for playing the Sims 2
The card can be seen here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814145087
Unfortunately, the card does not seem to be able to run the game, though it should
We get the following error when starting the game:

"Failed to find any DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapters in this SYSTEM! Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0c compatible graphics adapter and have installed the latest drivers provided b the manufacturer. This application will now terminate. "

our card, as seen in the link above, is compatible with DirectX Version 9.
What is causing this problem, and how can I fix it?

I have installed the drivers, it didn't work. I installed some Microsoft drivers that were downloaded automatically from the Internet, and that didn't solve the problem.
dxdiag and EaSy info shows no video memory detected (though the card has 256MB RAM installed, and dedicated)

One major problem is that the manufacturer site doesent seem to have Driver updates, so I cant really download them.

If you think you know the solution, or something that may help (or even a site where you can download Drivers free and safe), then please, by all means, post every troubleshoot step you have. This is my favorite game, and I am greatly desperate.

My computer and card meet the minimum requirements for the Sims 2 Quote
Why not get the driver here: http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
I will try that. I hope it worksIts working, and I think I should give one heck of a good explanation as to why I couldn’t get it to work.
Firstly, lets start with “STUPID DRIVERS!”
It was because of my Remote Control software that I had to use to do everything
You see, the remote software has its own driver that mirrors the computer SCREEN image. That driver is not DirectX 9.0 compatible, its not for displaying great graphics, and it kind of replaces the real card when in use. It blocked the ability for me to see that.
Having someone on the actual computer trying to run the game worked since the actual computer uses its own card, not a computerized one.

My sister described the graphics quality to me, and claimed that everything was brighter, and amazing. Everything is much better. No longer are objects in the game blurs, they are detailed. There is a waxing moon in the sky, surrounded by beautiful stars. There's nothin better than a waxing moon surrounded by beautiful stars...

Except a beautiful woman.

patio.   8-)yup

We hadent the slightest idea that there were stars in the sky... none at all. It used to just be a DARK blue like plastic, and nothing more (but there was a moon, just no phases)

Solve : Fun Javascript?

Answer» SOMETHING fun for you guys to PLAY around with. I just happen to come across this while surfing around. Copy the below code into your address bar after loading any page and watch the images on that page fly around..

Can i protect my files on my COMPUTER with password or some other WAY. I don't  want  some other people to have access  to themThe easiest way is to use an ARCHIVE tool, such as WinRAR, to put the files in a password protected archive. It's possible to break the password, but it should provide sufficient protection against most "average joe" computer users. Quote

Do you already have WinZip by chance?     Lots of folks do.   Instead of RAR, you can zip your files, with a password.

But if you really would sooner encrypt them, here is a FREEWARE idea:

Solve : Cleaning up a Dell?

Answer»

My uncle has a Dell Inspiron 2200.
He wants me to go over and help him sort out his pictures.
While I'm there I'm going to clean it up for him, eg remove unused programs, defragment, tweak some settings and so on.
He's never been connected to the Internet so am I right in thinking I can remove Norton Antivirus?
If so, I need Soybean's (is it Soybean's?) link to the definitive removal guide for the Norton virus
I'm going to remove Microsoft Works and install OpenOffice, remove Boots Photo Manager and remove Paint Shop photo organizer (or something like that).
Is there anything else I need to consider?
He doesn't use his computer much, mainly just photo storage and scanning photos, but his wife/my aunt will be USING it for some basic tasks such as word processing.
Any recommended free programs to keep it running well?
No internet on the computer so nothing that needs internet registration or regular updates.
Thanks in advance.
Calum. Calum..... Quote

He's never been connected to the Internet so am I right in thinking I can remove Norton Antivirus?
......... Assuming that his Norton is out of date ...yes you can remove it ........ you may find that you may require the assistance of the Norton removal tool specific to the version that he has installed .
Even though your uncle isn't online , it would be prudent to have a anti virus installed .......... AVG free version is good ......
Is there some reason that your relatives have never connected to the Internet ? .....There is a wealth of great information on the net ......

How do you plan on getting the latest Operating system updates without going on the net ........ theres a good chance there are updates applicable .......
BTW , which operating system is installed on that machine ?

dl65  Personally I wouldn't risk uninstalling Norton unless there is a specific reason to. Let sleeping dogs lie.SP2 and all of the updates are really mandatory, and I would set up an antivirus and Spybot for the day he DOES go online. Ounce of prevention, you know.

I would leave Works on there. Pretty handy and easy to use for many simple household tasks.Where did my reply go?
I swear I posted one . . .
Anyway, what I said was this.
I was going to install either AVG or BitDefender, as he doesn't need real-time protection unless he's online, right?
That's if I decide to remove Norton, for which I will need the removal tool and CCleaner, and some common sense.
He has XP Home SP2 (pretty sure anyway, I don't have the machine here to check)
They're not connected to the internet because my uncle's been moving house, he moved from a CARAVAN to my aunt's house to another house which they're now living in and improving, he's been really busy and not had chance to set up an internet connection.
He's looking at getting internet in a few months when the house is sorted out.
OS updates . . . is it POSSIBLE to download them and burn them to a CD?
There's no other way for him to get them.
I'll get an antivirus and some spyware protection installed, and then it's ready for when he gets internet.
I'll leave the firewall until it's necessary, it's possible for him to get malware from a CD or USB drive or something but there's no reason to have a firewall yet, it'd just slow the system down.
Works . . . not had much experience with it, but wouldn't OpenOffice be better?
Thanks for the replies.i would not give him open office if i were you, for 2 reasons 1 he payed for works, and 2 unless you like late night phone calls about how he cant find his word files any more because the icons have changed of that the edit MENU is differnt...

however if he is competent i don't foresee a problemOthers might disagree, but I don't think Windows updates are that important right now if he's not online. They're mostly security patches. But don't forget them! Microsoft Works is basically an earlier version of Microsoft Word. It is more than adaquate for, as GX puts it, many simple household tasks like writing a letter or removing dust in those hard to reach places. Plus if he's familular with it he might not like having to learn a new program. As for firewall, you might as well leave the Windows Firewall on. I do. It's easier than having to shut it off whenever I run the network wizard and it reactivates itself, which I find highly annoying. He didn't pay for Works, it came with the laptop.
He's never used it and nor has my aunt, or if they have used it they've maybe used it 2 or 3 times.
In view of that, would you still recommend not installing OpenOffice?
They really don't know how to use a PC, which is part of why I'm going over there.
Firewall - what I meant was that I won't install a firewall now, but I'll probably set up Sygate when he gets online.
I won't forget Windows updates either when he gets internet.Youll want the windows up dates before he gets online , or thell be hit by things like MS Blast before you can do anythingOnce more then, how do I do that?
It's not a problem I have to face soon because he's nowhere near the net yet, but how do I get updates onto his computer if it doesn't have internet?Get the windows XP service pack 2 For network administrators Download
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=049C9DBE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en

stick it on a CD and bring it with youIsn't that just SP2 though?
I'm pretty sure he already has it, aren't most new computers sold with XP SP2?i think you can download all the updates the same way, you'll just have to search the MS site a little, if you want to do the job right you have to put the effort inYou're right, I can download them all.
It'd take a very long time though.
I'm off to Google to see if there's some sort of combined update, to install all of the updates that have been released. This Public Service announcement is brought to you by Wham-O...

Solve : In my windows file there are 150 + files?

Answer»

In my C:\windows file there are over 150 file referencing (in blue lettering)
$ntuninstallkb899588$ and another 100 plus of KB90544 (the NUMBERS change in each file) when I google both of these the pages are in french an other languages, once translated it refer to VIRUS and adware. Can I safely delete all these file in the windows.lmorsini......  I could be wrong , but I think those files should be there .
Why do you think you should be REMOVING them?
Did your anti virus program detect something in those files ?

dl65  They are Security Updates and associated uninstallers.  The blue lettering indicates they have been compressed by the inbuilt XP compression tool to save disk space.

They can be deleted if you so wish, I advise to leave them be, or at least burn them to removable storage if you intend to delete them..  They are normally hidden folders/files.

Good luck

Okay, I'm trying to install a game but everytime I try, it goes through the process about half-way and then I suddenly get this message saying "You do not have enough space left".  I tried deleting some things to get some memory space back, but that didn't work.  If you have any idea what to do, I'd gladly appreciate help. I'm installing "Reel DEAL Slots; Nickels and More".  And for STEP number two, I have no idea what any of that means.  I'm not too SMART with computers.Click on the link above that says Everest, a box will APPEAR, select save and save it to your desktop.
Double click the saved zipped file on your desktop and select extract to your desktop.
Double click on the resulting file to install Everest.

Then open the Everest program and follow the next steps...
