Solve : Add music to Video clip?

Answer»

I have a small video clip of my wife frolicking on the BEACH in Hawaii that I took with my iPhone. I downloaded the 40 second clip to my hard drive. How do I add music to the video so I can add it to my Facebook.

AAOHere is a possible solution. I have not ever used it. Found in a Google search.

Description
Simple and powerful, Splice is the best video editor for your iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch! Easily create videos and slideshows, with no length limits, watermarks, or ads. Includes free songs, sound effects, text overlays, transitions, filters and precise editing tools.
Let me know if that works for you.
I have done this with FRAPs as a cheaper method vs Camtasia.

I like that FRAPS is LOSSLESS and I already owned a licensed copy of it. With FRAPS I would get the music ready that i want to add to the video. Have FRAPS ready to record. Shut off the audio on the Media player so the sound of whats happening in the video doesnt mix with the music. And quickly do the following.

Start Music
Go Full screen for video
Press the FRAPS hot key to start recording the video with the audio that is playing.

When video recording is done press hot key to stop it from recording.

Then I use VirtualDub to take the newly created video and make it into a smaller AVI file for youtube or sharing with friends. FRAPS MAKES like a 2GB file of raw video and audio information LOSSLESS and VirtualDub encodes it to smaller AVI or other format of choice. Depending on the settings you go with it will keep video sharp or make it lesser sharpness. I go with H.264 codec for best quality to size file in the end.

VirtualDub is free, but FRAPS comes at a cost.Open a video editing program on your COMPUTER (I use Windows Movie Maker)
Click on the video clip, hold down on the mouse button and drag the video clip to the "Timeline." Then go to "File" and then "Open" or "Import" to open the song you wish to add to the video clip.
Click and drag the song file into the beginning of the "Audio/Music" frame. You can also select the from which exact part of the video you'd like the music to start or stop. To Rookie,

I tired the drag and drop and the import features of Windows Movie Maker but it isn't WORKING. I did get an error message with I tried yo import telling me that. the file type wasn't supported. The type of File is MOV file ( MOV) and opens with Movies and TV.

What next ??

AAOHow about trying some other video editing software for this purpose? You can find few reliable ones by searching online.

Solve : How do I stop Windows 10 update?

Answer»

I have a Lenovo Laptop with Windows 10, and I am on a very, very slow Hughesnet connection. (12kbs not kidding) The problem is, when Windows 10 decides to update it takes FOREVER and I can't do anything else with my computer while it is downloading. It has been stuck at 47% download for the last 6 hours, and I can't find a way to cancel it out. It look 5 minutes for my aol email account to LOAD up. Is there a way to cancel the download and time it for later in the evening? Thanks Isn't there any option related to Cancel Download or you can just restart the system? Well, I don't think there is a way. unlike the previous versions of windows, windows 10 doesn't give user to cancel UPDATES or select which updates should be installed. The only solution to reverting back to previous versions of windows or you can wait it out (leave your PC on overnight). Hope I could help.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3085136/windows/two-ways-to-control-or-stop-windows-10-updates.htmlI had left it on 'til late last night, however, when I turned it on this morning it was still at 47%, then in no time it said it had downloaded the update and was ready for a restart, which is what I did, and it seems to be running a LITTLE quicker. I did go in and change the update times to between 8:00PM and 2:00PM, when I normally do not use the computer.

I did check out the hyperlink provided by Allan, and unfortunately, at this location, I have to use Ethernet and for the Windows 10 Home version you couldn't tweak it as can be done for the other Win 10 versions. If I had Win 10 Pro or better I could have done it for either WiFi or Ethernet.

Thank you all for your input. It is very much appreciated.

Solve : I think I found the error to my computer's freezing, can anybody help with this??

Answer» http://imgur.com/a/rWOII

Above image is the error that I believe is causing my computer to freeze. Is it a program? If so, is there a way to find out which program and disable it? If not, can anyone help me find a solution?

Back story: I installed Windows 10 Anniversary Update / Version 1607 on 9/22/2016, since then my computer has been seeing freezes which has never happened since the day I built it 6 years ago. Right after the update it recommended me to delete the previous versions to make space, so I did that and can no longer roll back.

The reason why I think that is the error causing it is because SOMEONE taught me to USE Event Viewer to watched for timed errors for when it freezes, that is the only error that occurred when it FROZE and anything after that is related to the hard reset I had to do, in that image my computer was able to stay on for 3 hrs prior to freezing but I have seen often where it would freeze 20 seconds after log-in.

I can provide more information if needed, please help?

It isn't, and has nothing to do with hanging issues.

You should keep all your info related to one problem in one thread.

Solve : Recovery Disc or Repair Installation for 10?

Answer»

Friend of MINE came to me this morning asking if I had a Windows 10 Repair Disc that he could use as for his system is now stuck in a Windows 10 boot loop. Curious if all Windows 10 Repair Discs are the same or if they are created specifically (dynamically) for that build/PC to where they wont work WELL in other Windows 10 systems needing repairing?

I asked which version of Windows he upgraded from and he said he upgraded from Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. The good thing there is that thats the same version I upgraded from on my one system that has Windows 10 on it.

Was wondering if I can create a Repair Disc for Windows 10 and it would help fix his issue or if he is out of luck and should have created one for his build that is corrupted?

Additionally, I cant seem to locate it, but I thought I read here at some point about Microsoft making ISO's available for download for Windows 10 so that if he needed to he could also try a repair installation using the Windows 10 Installation Disc, but havent found the link. If this is available if anyone has the link to that, that would also be helpful.

I asked him why he didnt create the recovery media or repair disc for his system and the answer I got was that well all problems he had in the past were able to be corrected by using repair tools. Asked him if he thinks he could have gotten nailed by a virus and he said no he just plays GAMES through steam client and so no unsafe download and installations. Here Ya Go...Cool THANKS!!!Windows 8 or 10 allows you to create a recovery drive (USB) or system repair disc (CD or DVD) that can be used to troubleshoot and restore your COMPUTER. Each type of recovery media gives you access to Windows’ advanced startup options.
http://www.howtogeek.com/131907/how-to-create-and-use-a-recovery-drive-or-system-repair-disc-in-windows-8/

You can also copy your computer’s recovery partition to the drive, creating a backup copy. After you create the backup copy, Windows will allow you to remove the recovery partition from your computer, freeing up gigabytes of space.3
A recovery drive will normally not be necessary. If your computer fails to boot several times, Windows 8 or 10 will automatically bring up the advanced startup options, which allows you to troubleshoot and fix it.
http://www.ieenews.com/change-startup-programs-windows-7-8-windows-10/

If Windows can’t even bring up these tools, you’ll need the recovery drive, system repair disc, or a Windows 8 or 10 installation disc. Insert the recovery media into your computer and restart. Your computer should boot from the recovery media automatically. (If it doesn’t, you may need to change its boot order.)He cant make a repair disc if the system won't boot...

I don't know where to look, it just does it.

2. My computer shut down by itself.

Around early September I noticed the FPS greatly dropped in the game I played as oppose to what I regularly saw on a daily basis, some time shortly after that, my computer would shut itself down 1-3 times a day, I thought this was a GPU problem so I uninstall and reinstall the drivers and AMD program. The shut downs would worsen to the point where starting up the game or watching a video would shut it down. On the 22nd I updated my computer to Windows 10 Anniversary Update Vesion 1607 (Which seems to have broken a LOT of computers), shortly after the update my computer would see freezes often.

I tried looking for solutions and trying many things to get rid of the 2 major issues, it only worsen so I gave in and clean install Windows 10 back on to my computer hoping it would no longer have the issues. The freezes are not as bad now but it is enough that I can't use my computer on a normal basis and I am scared to load a video or game THINKING it will shut itself down again, it shut itself down twice since the clean install, which is a lot more bare-able.

I would like to figure out what exactly is causing it so I can save my computer.

Run this program while I put it underload and WATCH if anything shoots up? It may turn off before I notice a chance though.Generally speaking, hardware tests don't damage your hardware but rather stress tests can damage your hardware (but I've avoided them happening by constantly watching them while they are running and immediately stopping them before they cause any damage).

Solve : Google Earth unresponsive to coordinates input?

Answer»

I have copied the coordinates from the bottom of a Google Earth display on another PC, into the G.E. search box on MY PC. I can not get G.E. to go to that location. How can I fix that ? Googlewebsite seems to provide NO option for asking it questions. It's likely the SYNTAX of the copied location...
I would try typing it in manually instead of copy/paste...I did type it in. Originally with out the ° symbol; but even when I added that, it would make no move. It has NO trouble going to places spelled out in letters. You don't need any spaces, commas or symbols. In fact the degree, minutes and SECONDS symbols may cause problems if characters are used to display them which Google Earth doesn't understand. This can happen with coordinates copied from some websites.

In your example jmharris4 you can use any of the following:
47° 42' 09.83"n, 10° 56' 19.47"e
47 42 09.83n, 10 56 19.47e
47 42 09.83n 10 56 19.47e

I hope it helps. I copied and pasted the last line of your coordinates, and GE DID respond, Puzzled why it would not respond to mine, unless it was because of the 'lat' and 'lon' which APPEARS at the bottom of the GE screen, which I had included. As mentioned in my post, degree, minutes and seconds symbols may cause problems. Or even in some versions, letters like d or n may also cause it to not recognize the coordinates. Glad you were ABLE to resolve the issue.

Solve : New laptops colours are off?

Answer»

Hello i just purchased a new laptop it is the HP Envy 15-as050na 15.6" and upon starting it up all looked fine until i started viewing websites i usually do and the colours of most THINGS look different! White looks cream, purple looks pink and it generally has a washed out look to it except for very intense bright colours. It seems too yellow/warm COLOURED. I have tried calibrating it, changing its hue and saturation, checkings its graphics card is up to date but nothing has worked. Im now so worried that this is just what its SCREEN looks like due to an artical i found from 2012 about what would have been an old Envy model, HP saying that colours would look different on it to other screens. Surely this has been fixed by now and if not you should be warned before purchase. I am devastated as i spent alot on this laptop(for me anyway) and i need it for college doing digital art, well if it cant show colours correctly its useless to me. The thing is if its not a fault PC world wont take it back according to their terms and conditions as i bought it in store.
Please does anyone know anything about this sort of problem or maybe even this laptop and what its display is usually like? Or if it actually is a genuine fault so i can return it? Thank you for your helpIf athe coloors are off, it is a defect.
This does happen and it is a common problem. You should not have to repair or calibrate a new laptop.

A test image:

You should insiste ther vendor return it to the maker.

I'd return it under warranty, but copy your data to external drive and perform a system recovery to like new out of box before giving it back.

I bought a $999 returned computer at $280 discount for $719 at a big name office supplies store chain that sells computers and the computer was sold to me with the prior owners information still on it. I performed the clean install process that the store or prior owner should have DONE to wipe it clean and make it fresh like new again without the prior owners data. Prior owner had Quicken installed with personal info and more and I shook my head at how stupid the prior owner and the office supply chain store was to just sell it as an open box returned computer without regard of data security. Fortunately I'm one of the good guys, but there are others out there who given the opportunity would have run with that info and caused trouble. The main troubleshooting step is testing the video output on an external monitor (or TV). You can connect your laptop to an external monitor using VGA cable, DVI cable, HDMI cable or S-Video cable, it depends on a type of connector you have. If the external screen is showing right color resolution, than there is fault in your laptop resolution (for which I'd ALSO recommend claiming your warranty asap, since it's new) but if the external one is also showing off colors, than there is the problem with your graphics card.

Solve : Unable to temporarily delete 'thumbs.db' icon from desktop?

Answer»

Ever since I have UPGRADED to Win 10, on my desktop 'thumbs.db' icons have been appearing. I constantly delete them, after some time they re-appear. Is there any way I'd be able to delete them temporarily? START - run - gpedit.msc (press enter)

User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer

Double-click “Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files” option and set it to “Enabled”.Help appreciated,I have been able to (finally) get RID of those thumbs.db icons. But still I am just curious why do they appear? I mean does this has to do with caches?

Solve : Keyboard keys do not work?

Answer»

I was TRYING to disable driver signature. After restarting the COMPUTER, I cannot press F7 to disable as the keys on the keybord do not work.

I cannot also press DEL or F11 to enter the BIOS and choose BOOT methods as well.

Once the computer is finished booting, the keyboard works fine.

Why it does not work before booting?

It is a USB keyboard.Turn on Legacy devices in the BIOS...But i cannot enter bios as the keyboard led light is on after i get the screen where to say to enter bios.Or it might be the keyboard itself. I also have USB keyboard and some of my letter keys didn't work,in the end found out it was the keybard itself. Try checking with another keyboard it the same keys ain't working on that one too. i solved it. it was fastboot on biosI thought you STATED you couldn't enter BIOS...i disable fastboot by pressing power button continuously. it will shut down your computer after turning on. then turn on again it works.

Solve : Can't set resolution correctly for monitor?

Answer»

I have a Dell UltraSharp U2516D which supports 2560x1440 60Hz mode.

Highest options Windows 10 will show me (from Display Options and also the List All Modes box) are 1920x1080 and 2048x1080.

I've installed the latest drivers for my card NVidia GTX 560, from the NVidia website.

I'm using a DVI - HDMI cable to connect (HDMI port on monitor, DVI from GRAPHICS card).

What can I do to troubleshoot this? Many thanks for looking at my problem. Looking it up... maybe my graphics card doesn't support HDMI 1.3 (I don't know, can't find stats on it, and it doesn't make sense that my card would not support a version of HDMI). HDMI 1.3 or something is required to do 2560x1440.

(EDIT: Although HDMI 1.3 came out in 2006 so it doesn't make sense a 2011(?) card would not support it. Not sure how necessary it seemed to NVidia at the time, though.)

The screen also has DP and mDP, do you think DVI to DP would work better? Is that even a real thing. (Graphics card only has DVI output).Likely you need a Dual-Link DVI connection. However "Adapters" don't usually support Dual-link DVI which results in a limited RESOLUTION. You would need to either replace the card with one that has Display Port or HDMI 1.4 and use the appropriate cable to connect to the monitor, or replace the monitor with one that supports Dual-Link DVI. (Former is probably more affordable...)Yeah I bought a "good" monitor, so probably cheaper to replace the graphics card. Oh well, bit of a shame, not end of the world... I would like to get that full res.

Could you by any chance recommend a GPU in the same kind of performance range or better? I guess something around the £100 mark or lower (so... like $150 or lower bearing in mind market/exchange differences if you're not used to UK market).

Thanks for the reply, whether or not you can help with choosing GPU. You've saved me at least a trip to the store trying to fix something else that can go wrong!

EDIT: and furthermore I tried out a different card and it works in here, going to keep it there until I figure out what to buy for them. Not using my primary computer atm so I can live like this for some time. Thanks again, has been very helpful getting a useful informative answer like this.I'm seeing GT610's on Amazon.ca for $44 Canadian so it might be similarly inexpensive on .co.uk or on other sites. (or brick and mortar).

For the most part I'd expect any graphics card that has a HDMI or Display Port connector would at least be equivalent to the 560.A GT610 is significantly weaker than a 560, you would need to go higher end than that to get something comparable. Looking at used cards on the likes of eBay may also be worth a try. You may also want to consider returning the monitor and getting one that supports DVI as this may work out cheaper.

What model of 560 do you have? My old 560ti didn't have a full size HDMI port but it did have miniHDMI. Not sure if this would support 1.3 or not though.Right, I forgot the second digit is more significant than the first for Nvidia model numbers.Possible relevance:

The Mini DisplayPort (MiniDP or mDP) is a miniaturized version of the DisplayPort audio-visual digital interface.

It was announced by Apple in October 2008. As of 2013, all new Apple Macintosh COMPUTERS had the port, as did the LED Cinema Display.[2][not in citation given] The Mini DisplayPort is also fitted to some PC motherboards, and some PC notebooks from Asus, Microsoft, Lenovo, Toshiba, HP, Dell, and other manufacturers.

Unlike its Mini-DVI and Micro-DVI predecessors, the Mini DisplayPort can drive display devices with resolutions up to 2560×1600 (WQXGA) in its DisplayPort 1.1a implementation, and 4096x2160 (4K) in its DisplayPort 1.2 implementation. With an ADAPTER, the Mini DisplayPort can drive display devices with VGA, DVI, or HDMI interfaces.[3][4][5]

Apple offers a free license for the Mini DisplayPort[6] but they reserve the right to cancel the license should the licensee "commence an action for patent infringement against Apple".
EDIT: Note that is says:

IIRC it's a GIGABYTE GTX 560 (not TI).

It has 2 DVI ports and 1 mini HDMI. So good idea yeah, I could try with a mini HDMI (would have to borrow/locate one). Seems plausible.

Solve : LOST CONNECTION TO AN IP AFTER WINDOWS UPDATE?

Answer»

my ENV. - Window 10 Pro - ver. 1607 - build 14393.187

I have been connecting to Teradata under VMWare (Linux) for SEVERAL years using IP - 192.168.74.128.

As of today following a series of Windows updates I am no longer able to connect / ping to this IP from Windows.

I can start the VMplayer on Windows , logon to the Unix machine and ping this IP so the issue appears to be on the Windows side.

Not sure what changed but obviously SOMETHING has.......

Following is the output of IPCONFIG /ALL on Windows and the output of ifconfig on the Linux side.

Does anyone have an idea how I can restore the IP / what to change and how ?

At a complete loss with this ....
thanks Brian

Solve : OCR program?

Answer»

Can you please show me how to download and install the FREE OCRTOWORD program? I use firefox and Windows 10.
Moreover, is this program really free for a brief trial period only?

When a program is downloaded, how to open it, because I never find how this is done whenever i go to the list of PROGRAMS in my downloads, that is, after I HIT the arrow down in the top, right-hand corner of my Firefox screen.

Many thanks in advance.

Guzeppi In Windows programs must be INSTALLED before they can be USED. (Few exceptions.)
Firefox will download a file, but does not normally install it.
You must open the folder contains the file, then open that file.

Solve : Recovery Help?

Answer»

I'm on holiday and have been transferring photos and videos from my camera and video camera onto my laptop every few days. Whenever I do this I delete everything from my devices so the MEMORY on them doesn't fill up. I've been putting all this onto a created folder on my desktop. This was all fine until this morning when "something" deleted that entire folder. I don't know if it was OneDrive or iCloud. I've looked in both. My recycling bin is empty. I've been downloading and deleting (when it's done nothing) suggested recovery programs all day. Nothing has made these photos and videos reappear. When I connect my camera or video camera to my laptop the files I want to copy all open up in OneDrive and I've just been copying them to this created folder. I just don't get how they could vanish on their own. I really need someone's help. My family will murder me when they find out a month of documentation has vanished. Quote

I really need someone's help. My family will murder me when they find out a month of documentation has vanished.

Well hopefully they love you enough not to murder you.

But this can happen from a number of causes. Some possible ways are... Depending on what sector of a hard drive corrupting could cause this in which the data is still there but orphaned from the file system, or somehow when deleting from device you accidentally deleted them, or software that UPLOADS the pictures malfunctioned and is written in a way to where a bug wipes out the files with a hard delete function. But no matter how they got deleted the best way to avoid this in the future is to have a backup plan in place that has an offline backup method.

I myself have ( 3 ) 64GB USB drives that I use in a backup rotation. I have a folder on my computers hard drive that I keep my IMPORTANT data. On my desktop I have a shortcut to a batch file that I run on occasion to update the 64GB USB flash drive with latest data that is on the hard drive that is important. I swap out these USB flash drives once a week and they are labelled A, B, and C with sharpie marker on them to keep track of the rotation of using A, B, C and then back to A to keep up to 2 weeks of back data offline protected in case I got hit with a malware attack or something else wipes out my data such as very improbable but possible hacker going in to be a pain in the rear and deleting all important data, I would still have B and C inaccessible to the hacker and so only lose the data on the hard drive and USB drive labelled as A.

The biggest problem with cloud storage is that say your system got hacked, a hacker with access to your system if they were wanting to wipe out local and cloud data, they could do so. But having data on devices that are not CONNECTED, they are safe.

Depending on how much data you plan to store, it can get big quickly with videos or 64GB such as what i am using might be plenty if mostly photos are taken and saved.

One thing you could try is contacting OneDrive or iCloud to see if they have a shadow copy of your data that is off limits to you but they might be able to restore your data. This might come at a fee or they might do it for free. Personally I would think that a cloud storage provider would keep shadow copies of data so that if a cloud space was being used for illegal activities and a CRIMINAL tried to destroy whatever is illegal to destroy evidence against them, that the data would still be there. So given that, I would expect the cloud providers to have a method of data recovery to you, however this service might come at a cost.

Solve : System Restore for Win10??

Answer»

Hi Forum,
The old "System Restore" program for XP was so awesome. It saved me so many times. It seems this doesn't work the same in Win10.
Is there a program that does what the XP Restore did (for free or paid).
THANKS!
MikeFirst of all, please don't post in the viruses forum unless your system is infected.

Second, Windows 10 has System Restore. Quote from: Allan on September 11, 2016, 10:45:39 AM

Second, Windows 10 has System Restore.
Most people think that System Restore in Vista and later are better than XP.

There are considerable differences between how System Restore works under Windows XP and later Windows versions.

Configuration UI - In Windows XP, there is a graphical slider to configure the amount of disk space allotted to System Restore. In Windows Vista, the GUI to configure the disk space is not available. Using the command-line tool Vssadmin.exe or by editing the appropriate registry key, the space reserved can be adjusted. Starting with Windows 7, the slider is available once again.

MAXIMUM space - In Windows XP, System Restore can be configured to use up to a maximum of 12% of the volume's space for most disk SIZES; however, this may be less depending on the volume's size. Restore points over 90 days old are automatically deleted, as specified by the registry value RPLifeInterval (Time to Live - TTL) default value of 7776000 seconds. In Windows Vista and later, System Restore is designed for larger volumes. By default, it uses 15% of the volume's space.

File paths monitored - Up to Windows XP, files are backed up only from certain directories. On Windows Vista and later, this set of files is defined by monitored extensions outside of the Windows folder, and everything under the Windows folder.

File types monitored - Up to Windows XP, it excludes any file types used for users' personal data files, such as documents, digital photographs, media files, e-mail, etc. It also excludes the monitored set of file types (.DLL, .EXE etc.) from folders such as My Documents. Microsoft recommends that if a user is unsure as to whether certain files will be modified by a rollback, they should keep those files under My Documents. When a rollback is performed, the files that were being monitored by System Restore are restored and newly created folders are removed. However, on Windows Vista and later, it excludes only document file types; it does not exclude any monitored system file type regardless of its location.

Configuring advanced System Restore settings - Windows XP supports customizing System Restore settings via Windows Registry and a file at %windir%\system32\restore\Filelist.xml. Windows Vista and later no longer support this.

FAT32 volume support: On Windows Vista and later, System Restore no longer works on FAT32 disks and cannot be enabled on disks smaller than 1 GB.

Up to Windows XP, the system can be restored as long as it is in an online state, that is, as long as Windows boots normally or from Safe mode. It is not possible to restore the system if Windows is unbootable without using a 3rd-party bootable recovery media such as ERD Commander.

Under Windows Vista and later, the Windows Recovery Environment can be used to launch System Restore and restore a system in an offline state, that is, in case the Windows installation is unbootable. Since the advent of Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack, Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset from it can be used to create a bootable recovery disc that can log on to an unbootable Windows installation and start System Restores. The toolset includes ERD commander for Windows XP that was previously a 3rd-party product by Wininternals.

Great comparison ST - thanks Thanks guys!
The thing that I don't like about the new restore is that I cannot schedule a restore point. I can only make one manually, and the program seems to never create one automatically when I need it to. I need to schedule regular points to be able to restore after viruses are picked up.
Thanks!

Please feel free to move to the appropriate folder. Well, I'll suggest the same thing to you that I always suggest. In my OPINION EVERYONE should use disk imaging software as their primary backup method. Done properly, it is foolproof and the most reliable backup / restore method available. Quote

Yes...you can.Hi Allan,
What files should I backup in order to recover from a virus infection?
Thanks!
Mike
Disc imaging software takes a snapshot of your entire drive or partition. Using that image, you can restore all or any part of that image if and when needed. That's why I say it is the perfect backup option.

Of course you want to create the image(s) prior to being infected.I agree with those suggesting that everyone take system images of their disk drive.

However, as far as System Restore, it's still alive in Win 10 and you can create new Restore Points manually just as with previous Windows versions. Right-click on the Start menu, then select "System". From the System screen, select "Advanced system settings". For an even faster way to get there, type system restore into Cortana's search box. There is a small free utility you might find useful, called System Restore Creator. It enables quick and easy MANUAL creation and deletion of Restore Points, lists all the ones you have, with dates, etc. You should find it with a Search.Everything he wants / needs to do has instructions in my link above...

Solve : New to PCs: Black Screen with No Cursor - I tried everything (?)?

Answer»

Hello. I'm new to Windows (former Mac user). I have an MSI GT72 DOMINATOR PRO-211 laptop (specs below) running Windows 10. When I tried to wake it from sleep yesterday, I got a black screen with no cursor. When I restarted, same result. After 2 minutes, the fans start running loudly.

(The "GPU" button lights up, which I never noticed before. I don't understand it well, but apparently it is for selecting discrete GPU or UMA GPU mode. Glows when discrete GPU mode is SELECTED. Tried using the button. No good.)

I researched and tried the following solutions, with no positive results:

1) Removing all devices and RESTARTING (Failed)
-No beeps or sounds. Just black

2) Connecting to an external monitor [TV] (Failed)

3) Booting in Safe Mode (Failed):
  -Holding Shift when turning off
-(or) Esc + Power to restart
  -(or) Shift + Power
  -(or) Windows Key + Power
  -(or) F2 + Power
-(or) F8 + Power (apparently won't work with SSD(?))
  -(or) Shift + F8 + Power

4) Power Cycling (Failed)
The battery in my laptop cannot be removed. I did, however, disconnect it from the power plug, and pressed the pinhole "Battery Reset" button underneath.

5) Blind Login (Failed)
I do not have a password SET, so I tried the following in case the login screen was simply hidden.
  -Ctrl and Enter
  -Space and Enter
  -Alt and Enter

6) Boot from USB (Failed)
I downloaded Windows 10 Disc Image to put on a USB stick. However, my only other computer is a Mac (10.6.. The OS is older, so this version of Boot Camp Assistant doesn't give me an option to create a bootable USB.

I'm out of options and know-how (and patience). Please let me know what else I can do. Thanks!

Solve : From scanner to WORD?

Answer»

When I scan a document, what to do to transfer it to WORD for editing? I USE a flatbed scanner and Windows 10.
I have no problem printing the scanned text, but I cannot find a way of editing it before I print.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

GuzeppiSave the document with a name...then open it in Word to edit.

Note: You may not be able to edit certain scanned docs...
Many thanks, but am sorry solution did not work.

I had to open the scanned document with Photoshop; no other application would open it.

It was then not possible to save it in WORD, or anywhere else, except only in PICTURES.

When I tried to open it with WORD, I got a dialog box asking me to "select an encoding to make the document readable."

Then I got stuck.

GuzeppiGuzeppi, This should be part of the scanner software options. What scanner do you have? Most of the major makers have software to export to Word FORMAT.When you save the scanned document to your computer you must select the format to which you want it saved. hp 3970 flatbed scannerWhat do you mean "select the format"? I can open the scanned document only with Photoshop CS6. Once it is opened there, what is the next step? I am on Windows 10.

You have to choose the format in the scanner software when you scan the document and save it to hd.When you scan a document all you will get is a picture of the document. I believe you need a program that probably CAME with your scanner called OCR; Optical character recognition. In the old days that was correct Dave. Current scanners (and their software) give you the option to save the scanned documents to .PDF files which in turn can be converted to .doc files. The OCR option program should be in the HP software for this scanner.
HP Scanjet 3970 digital Flatbed Scanner

I have not tried this. But HP does provide OCR for their scanners. Let me know if you can not find any image to text in the HP software. If not, it may take an extra step to get it into the Word format.

Solve : Back up and Sync?

Answer»

I have 350 GB of my personal photos saved in my laptop. And this size increases by 10 GB at least every month.
(Earlier once I lost all my data saved in external hard disk . I can't take the same risk again. )

Now I purchased 1 TB of external hard disk. And I want to keep the backup.
Can someone suggest me the best way to keep the backup and keep syncing them every month?

I SEARCHED over internet and ended up with lot of confusions .See http://www.ghacks.net/2015/03/17/whats-the-best-free-file-synchronization-software-for-windows/ for numerous software options. Well, Thanks.
Is there any way of backing up and syncing without third party applications?
Because it should be OS Independent for me. QUOTE from: sahityacm on August 28, 2016, 07:13:08 PM

(Earlier once I lost all my data saved in external hard disk . I can't take the same risk again. )
Now I purchased 1 TB of external hard disk. ...
Have you not contradicted yourself? You once lost all your data that you had saved on an external hard desk. And, now, you bought another external hard desk. So, aren't you taking the same risk again, even though that risk is much lower than just storing all your photos on an internal disk?
Earlier I had all my photos in only external disk. Now i have them in my laptop and i bought external harddisk for backup purpose.

Keeping it a side, what do you think the best way to keep my data safe. EXCLUDING cloud data.Well, given the very LARGE amount of data you're working with, I'm inclined to think multiple external hard drives might be prudent and keeping one of those drives located somewhere off premises so that your data is protected in case of fire, theft, etc. You would need to rotate hard drives, alternating the one(s) kept at a different location. I agree with Soybean.
The only piratical way of keep a huge amount of data is with hard drives.
Some have used optical discs, but this means the quickness is not possible.
Reference:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Optical_jukebox
Quote
An optical jukebox is a robotic data storage device that can automatically load and unload optical discs, such as Compact Disc, DVD, Ultra Density Optical or Blu-ray disc and can provide terabytes (TB) and petabytes (PB) of tertiary storage. The devices are often called optical disk libraries, robotic drives, or autochangers. Jukebox devices may have up to 2,000 slots for disks, and usually have a picking device that traverses the slots and drives.
At the present time , cloud storage is the what many use. You can combine a NAS device with a cloud service and synchronize all or PART of the data.

Solve : unwanted + Plus sign spread sheet cells?

Answer»

When I import data (numbers) from a web site to excel, I get the + sign in the upper left corner of each cell.
How do I REMOVE these + SIGNS ??
Thinking a batch file that runs through the file as a CSV or TXT file could find all + and replace it with a space. Then you could open the CSV file with excel and have data delimited. Is this website open to all to look at so that we can see its structure to see what delimiter would be used etc? Solve : built-in administrator account not showing please help!?

Answer»

hi,

well i've tried to bypass the password on startup, so i went into the netplwiz and looked around in there... closed it and it said save changes... but i didnt click anything so i pressed ok..

then all my administrator permissions were gone for the only account on this COMPUTER...

I cannot run anything in administrator mode...not even in cmnd prompt in the windows 10 ui...

so i ran cmnd prompt in the recovery mode... (luckily the administrator account there is set at a blank password)

i enabled the built-in administrator ...it successfully enabled...

i start windows regularly... but there is no administrator account to choose from... only the outlook account i have on my computer...

i am not ruling out a virus... i am also searching google for "virus not allowing administrator" just checking out my options...

hope someone can help.... thanks!

Rod-Do you have an antivirus installed to run a scan? And anything detected?Did you do this?
Quote

Use the following steps to start Windows 7 in Safe Mode when the computer is off:
Turn on the computer and immediately begin pressing the F8 key repeatedly.
From the Windows Advanced Options Menu, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, and press ENTER.
The hidden administrator should be visible.

I was trying this... But after I hear the beep...
But ill try it as soon as I turn on the computer later...
I heard windows 10 automatically disables that f8 thing?

Also I've tried the windows 10 way to get to safe mode (shift+click restart") I went to the boot mode , pressed restart but it doesn't pop up with a safe mode option... Only a blue screen flashes and windows starts up as normal....

But I'll try the F8 key as soon as I turn on computer...

I think k I've read that someone else messed with the netplwiz application and this HAPPENED to them as well... So if I can only get it in safe mode ill probably be able to fix this by going back into netplwiz...

It's Shift +F8 for safemode... Quote from: patio on August 26, 2016, 06:24:55 PM
It's Shift +F8 for safemode...

ive tried multiple times.. mashing the two keys at the same time.. then holding them...

nothing works UPDATE*

I've enabled the F8 safe mode through command prompt under the recovery mode i went into command prompt and type
"C:" press enter... then type "BCDEDIT /SET {DEFAULT} BOOTMENUPOLICY LEGACY" press enter.. that enabled the f8 key boot menu.....

so i restart the computer... when the manufacture's screen comes up i do shift+f8 ... the next screen that comes up has the REGULAR type text... "choose operating system" i choose windows 10.. its says "press f8 key to see advance booting options for selected operating system" i press f8 it restarts the computer..... it doesn't bring up safemode menu...

ugh... what now...i think i've given up... im currently saving everything i want to keep in a flash drive... going to reinstall windows, CAUSE i've tried the recover but keep my personal files.. and it failed...

Solve : Failed System Restore on Tablet?

Answer»

I attempted to run a full restore/reinstall to remove EVERYTHING from my Windows 10 tablet and start fresh. I waited several hours, and when I went back to CHECK on it, it booted up and asked for my password. I tried to type it in, but the on SCREEN keyboard would not open. I was able to attach a regular keyboard to my tablet using an adapter and put in the password; however, I cannot access most functions now and receive error messages saying that the file is not on this drive or cannot be found. I have tried REINSTALLING the original Win 8 OS that came on it and is stored on a usb (and another copy on a micro sd), but I cannot find a way to get it to boot since none of the function KEYS do anything during start up, and the run command won't open msconfig. Also, I cannot connect to the internet.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

It could be a video driver issue or GPU failure. Id make a bootable Linux distro and run that and see if everything behaves. Linux Mint DVD can boot and run from the DVD without installing. You can surf the internet with this and play youtube videos and see if the problem comes back.

If the computer is covered by a warranty, I would use the warranty and make a claim for correction to this.Kinda silly you published a key code for Win 10 on a public Forum...oh well... too late now

Thanks for the response. This computer came with windows 8. God I hope its not GPU failure... Given its frequency is more random and infrequent it could also be RAM related. Id run memtest86 on this system and let it run for 4 or 5 full tests to make sure memory is all healthy. On laptops they share memory usually with system memory and so a RAM stick acting up can CAUSE GPU issues too.

If it were a GPU that is failing I would expect it to be more frequent and able to be triggered by specific load conditions or heat related etc to where you can stress it with a game etc and cause it to act up.

RAM issues can cause sporadic issues as a memory address gets flakey or isnt used by GPU and then gets used as free memory address becomes available in the pool of memory addresses for the RAM.

Additionally running crystaldiskinfo to check to make sure hard drive is healthy might be a good test too as for swap space (virtual memory) issues as a result of a troubled hard drive can cause system instability at times randomly. If the drive shows green good with crystaldiskinfo then drive is not a problem but if it pops up with a warning then check further as to why its flagged as a troubled drive. Thanks, one thing could it be possibly related to a restore point setting or change I did not too long ago. I have had this screen SHUTOFF 2 more times since my last post, problem is persisting. How long do one of those 86tests take to complete? It runs in cycles til you terminate it.....you should run it at least 1 hour...OK. I am first going to try "CrystalDiskInfo" that was mentioned before. I forgot or overlooked that advice. Quote from: DaveLembke on August 25, 2016, 06:57:42 AM

Solve : Which additional System-Service is triggering this Notification??

Answer»

Hello Members!

Please refer to the attached Pictorial description, & help assess the background System service/services causing this Notification window to pop-up during System startup albeit once!

YES the "Security Center" service has been set to >Manual< & even my User-account control associated notifications have also been set to >Never-Notify<...then which else Service can be held responsible for prompting such a message? This message is shortlived & pops-up from the extreme right hand corner of the taskbar & then disappears after a few seconds!

Thankfully, this do not returns until the PC is turned ON again!

Which service could be DEFYING the 'No Notification' as set within the User Accounts Control settings?

Help will be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you.

[ATTACHMENT deleted by admin to conserve space]Hello Forum Members!

Iam still awaiting a Reply in this regard....

Please guide...That Notification is a core part of the Action Center. it cannot be turned off except by manually tearing the Action Center out of WINDOWS, which causes numerous other problems.

Better solution is to turn the Security Center service and turn off it's notifications in The "Notifications & Actions" Control panel, as I presume that is why you shut it off in the first place.Hello BC_Programmer!

Security Center service were turned off using "services.msc" & Notifications have been set to "Never Notify" within the relevant section.

Nevertheless, I can let go the prompt as it appears in a sporadic manner, & that too just once!My previous post is missing a word- it should say to turn the Security Center service on.

As I said the Action Center is the source of the message. It shows the message if it detects the Service is disabled. You can enable the service and disable any notifications that were coming from the Security Center itself instead.

Why did you set at #6? You're complaining about text being too small to read but you choose the smallest size available. Doesn't make SENSE.

Quote from: jacobixxx8 on August 22, 2016, 09:21:07 AM
2.under display again set resolution at 1920-1080
I'm guessing that is the highest setting. Is that right? That's a high resolution on a laptop, meaning text is going to appear smaller than on LOWER resolution screens. So, increasing the size setting to offset the effect of high resolution seems like the logical thing to do in your SITUATION.

3.under display again set custom scaling level 100%
Maybe I could try 200%?
Hmm, my laptop only shows 125% as the maximum scaling. But, my resolution is 1366 x 768, so I would not need to scale as much as you to get a the same visual size effect. If your system allows scaling up to 200%, and presumably some options between 100% and 200%, why not experiment with the setting and see how it goes? Thanks for the consideration. I set it at 200% and it was more than I needed. .I'm in good shape
It pays to experiment once in a while.

My overall intention is to "Optimize" my overall experience with Windows10, so Yes indeed things are working fine...but I would really like to transform things for 'Better'!

Please suggest...A "System Managed" Pagefile is dynamic and changes size based on the demand for Pagefile space. The "recommended" value is the recommended size for a static pagefile, if you were to change the settings from system managed. Quote from: Saurabhdua on August 15, 2016, 01:16:14 PM

The world is full of people who love to fiddle with Windows settings, either because they think they know better than the developers at Microsoft, or because they have seen some web sites operated by people who think thay they do. Usually they end up not improving things very much. Virtual memory, MTU, number of processors used at boot, DEFRAGMENTATION, cacheing, etc. Is your system showing signs of poor performance that you can definitely link to poor virtual memory management? If not, leave it alone. A PC is not a sports car. You don't need to 'tune' it.

Your system (at the time you took that screen shot) had allocated 99.08% of the recommended amount of virtual memory. That is not really a "lower value" in any meaningful sense.

Solve : huge increase is disk space used on Win 8.1 laptop after upgrade to Windows 10?

Answer»

For those of you who upgraded a Win 8.1 system to Win 10 during the free upgrade period, have any of you noticed a surprisingly LARGE increase disk space used after the upgrade. I have to admit I do not recall exactly how much space was consumed on drive C before the upgrade but I believe it was under 50GB. After the upgrade, right CLICKING on drive C and selecting Properties shows 175GB used. In contrast, a desktop system with Win 10 (from Microsoft Insider program) has 40.3GB consumed on drive C and a system upgraded from a retail version of Win 7 Pro to Win 10 Pro has about 37.8GB used on drive C.

I will list where I see major areas of disk space consumption:

Users 14.2GB
Windows 18.5GB
Windows.old 16.2 GB
Windows10Upgrade 15.4GB

Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, and Video account for less than 10GB.

I'm wondering whether this situation will change by itself after the 30 day period for going back to the previous version expires. At some point, the Windows.old folder can be deleted. But, that would still leave a perplexedly large amount of drive space consumed.
Interesting.
So you're saying that those are the four largest folders showing, totaling roughly 65GB - I'm assuming that your program files folders aren't empty, but if they're smaller than the above, that does leave a lot of space unaccounted for.
Have you checked to see if system restore is using a large amount of space, or if Windows has perhaps created you a large page file? I once had Windows go a little overboard and create me something like a 30GB page file which was less than helpful.
Basically just trying to think of what could be taking up that space without being obvious or included in what you've checked. You're correct that the Windows.sold and Windows10Upgrade folders can be removed using disk cleanup once 30 days have passed (that reminded me to check mine...since the Windows 10 Anniversary upgrade the other day I now have a 16GB Windows.old folder myself, time to nuke that!).Calum, thanks for your response to my post. Since I posted about this, I ran the Windows disk defrag utility. After that, drive space used actually INCREASED. It is now 199GB. Oh, by the way, I checked the setting for pagefile and it is set to allow Windows to control the size; it currently shows 1218MB as the size.

I downloaded a hard drive graphing tool called HDGraph to see whether it might shed some light on the situation. I captured the graph created by HDGraph and am inserting it here. As you can see, it shows about 131.31GB as unidentified files. In the lower right corner, it says "284 elements skipped due to scan errors". If I click on the text below below that info, a panel pops up showing a list of those 284 elements.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Interesting. Curious - have you tried running that utility as administrator? Just wondering whether the "unknown files" are showing that way because you don't have direct permissions on them..."unknown files" is the difference between the total size of the files that HDGraph tallied and the Total used space reported by the drive (total size-used space).

Files not being accessible is one reason, either via security settings or otherwise, but that is a massive amount of files to be "locked out", I don't see any "Unknown files" listed with the program, even when not running it as admin, so it's certainly atypical for that to be the case.

As to the "original" issue regarding disk space, Both my Laptop and my desktop are on Windows 10 upgraded from Windows 8.1. My Desktop system has a 44.4GB Windows folder and my laptop has a 36.6GB Windows folder.

C:\Windows\Installer consumes the majority of the space on both systems; I notice that it's not present on the screenshot, which seems to suggest that perhaps that folder (which b asically saves all the Installer PACKAGES for all software and ALSO has all installed patch files/updates) may be owned by another account such as "TrustedInstaller" and can't be enumerated?

Solve : Windows 10 and Windows Live Mail 2012?

Answer»

I don't know if I am in the correct forum, I LOOKED around and ended up picking this one. I have a Dell desk computer, Intel Core I-5-4460, CPU 3.20GHz, RAM 8.00 GB, System Type 64-bit operating system. Let me explain how I use Windows Live Mail. I log on to Comcast, then Comcast mail. From there I delete what I don't want, then open my Windows Live Mail and everything I want to save goes into that. I read and compose my emails from there. The last TIME I sent an email out was Friday, August 4. Today I WENT to send some emails with and without pictures, they will not go. The message that comes up is: Server. 'smtp.comcast.net'
Windows Live Mail ERROR ID: 0x8007007A
      Protocol SMTP
      Port 587
      Secure (SSL): No

I called Comcast and was on the phone with them (them meaning about four different people) trying to resolve this, thinking it is a Comcast problem. We changed incoming and OUTGOING numbers (smtp and something else), rechanged them, rechanged them again and again, and I was then told it is a Microsoft problem. I can get incoming mail, but cannot send anything out. Anyone have an idea what is going on? I did not change anything from last time I sent an email to today when I went to send one. It was a total shock to me when it kept saying it would not go due to this error. Any help would be appreciated!

Cable modem? Sort of?
Yes
No, I'm doing it in order to stream GAMES from Xbox to PC with some sort of quality.Anyone have any ideas? Possibly your PC might have some trouble.
However, a Google search shows others connect to the Internt using wireless on the Xbox. Can you do that?

Connect your wireless network adapter. If your Xbox 360 console has built-in Wi-Fi, such as the Xbox 360 S, skip to the next step. Otherwise, snap the adapter into the tab slots on the back of the video game console and plug the USB cable into the port beneath. Extend the antenna. The green light on the adapter will turn on when it's working.
But the Wi-Fi adapter for the X Box is very privy and you are using sharing as an alternative. So let me offer two ideas.
A.) Go over you computer and look for any sign of malware or wrong settings.
B. ) FIND a very low-cost alternative to the Xbox Wi-Fi adapter. I think you can get something for under $20 if you shop around.
But the major stores are charging way too much for this sort of thing.
I have found cheap Wi-Fi extenders for under $20 on eBay. An extender have serve as a bridge for Wi-Fi to Ethernet. Here is a typical item on eBay.

Click on the attachment to see a LARGE view. I have bought two of the kind of such things from different vendors. Some have build-in antenna and work good. What you want is called a wireless client. It receives a signal and converts it to Ethernet.
(I rubbed out the sellers name. Many sell this product and different prices.)

Solve : Never Transfer Win 10 PC to PC. True??

Answer» Please humor me one more time.
This subject has come up times before, yet never with a clear understanding of the answer. Basically, when you install and activate the Windows operating system it shall stay on the PC for the rest of its life. Unless the computer out right fails and has to be replaced.

Now let's take that a little bit further. The old computer does not completely fail, it is just getting to the point where it does not work as WELL as it should. You have another computer in your inventory that has BETTER characteristics but does not have an activated new version of Windows. Specifically, Windows 10.
Now here I am.
To be more specific, the computer I want to use is a Dell 745 which I repaired and got it to work with Windows XP. That particular model is always certified for Windows XP, so I had no trouble installing the standard Dell version of Windows XP three. It is legal. But I need Windows 10 home version.
Yer, now I want to use Windows 10 on that 745.I have Windows 10 on an older GX520 that is no longer suitable for what I want to do. Rather than add more hardware to upgrade the old computer, I would rather just transfer my Windows 10 on to the Dell 745. Unfortunately, I never did put Windows 10 on that Dell 745. Just now I did put Windows 10 on it, but I do not have a product key to activate.
As mentioned earlier, this sort of question has been answered before but the answer never seems to be very clear and CONCISE. Is there another way I can install Windows 10 off of another computer and then install it on this Dell 745 . But, here is the gotcha, May I make that computer the registered computer for that copy of Windows 10?
The general the answer should be no, you cannot transfer Windows 10 from one computer to another. However, I thought there could be some exception to this if you were to call up Microsoft directly and talk to one of their TECHNICIANS and get permission to make the transfer. Perhaps that was true at one time, but is no longer the current policy of Microsoft.
Microsoft's EULA does not clarify how one could transfer the operating system to another computer. It seems to say that you cannot do such a thing. If that is so, then I'm stuck.
But the question is this: Is there some legal practical way to transfer Windows 10 from one computer to another? If Microsoft would have used something like a dongle this would not be such an issue. (Maybe, or maybe not.) Anyway, the current situation is that when you login to the Internet Windows checks to see if your computer is the one that is associated with the installed version of Windows 10. Or maybe something like that.
So I'm asking again, it's a some legal way to make an exception to the EU LA when a user wishes to upgrade to a better computer and stop using Windows 10 on the older computer.
Thank you for your patience.
What's the answer?
No, this is violating the EULA. The Windows 10 free upgrade only applies to machines with valid Windows 7 or 8 licences - The 745 only has an XP licence therefore does not QUALIFY. If the Windows 7/8 licence on the GX520 is anything other than a full retail boxed copy then it cannot be transferred to another machine and can therefore not be used on the 745. Give Microsoft a Call and ask them direct for permission. If they grant it your golden, but get it in writing, and I very much doubt they would approve of this even in their quest to convert everyone to 10 for world domination.

Solve : Trouble watching videos installed on PC.?

Answer»

It is currently 1:06am and I am having problems watching the videos that are installed on my computer. After I press the play button, the video will play for a little bit but then stop and the bar that says how far along the video is will be at the end, but the video hasn't reached the end yet. Then I'll TRY to skip ahead and it will freez. All I want to do is look at my GoPro FOOTAGE! Is it windows 10 or my computer? Is there a way to fix it? I have had this issue with videos that were created with video recorders that glitched out when recording due to low battery when recording. Is it just one video or all videos. Also have these videos ever played correctly and all of a SUDDEN it affects all videos including past videos that use to play fine.

With my own issue like this I found that it was only the videos on the SD Card in the recording device that GOT messed up. All prior videos that were downloaded to the the hard drive of the system ran fine. I ended up reformatting the SD Card and making sure I had a full battery when recording and the problem went away.

You can try using a video player other than the one that comes with windows if its affecting all old and new. I use VLC Player which is free. http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html

Solve : windows 10 error 0xc00021a?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

For the past 3 DAYS I am dealing with a very serious problem regarding my Windows 10 OS. The problem happened while I was gaming when my PC froze and I had to force restart it.

After that I keep getting the "Your PC ran into a problem" blue SCREEN (image attached below) with an error labeling 0xc000021a.

I tried a bunch of google solutions and none of them seemed to be working and also none of the windows BUILD-in solutions doesn't work (both resets, repairing with win10 repair disc, restore, return to previous build, fixMBR). Also I would like to point out that every time I try to chkdsk my OS drive (C:), this OPERATION isn't allowed because "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by ANOTHER process".

I am one step away from formatting my drive, so any help will be appreciated, although I would like to point out that I have check a lot of google solutions so please don't bring up the same solutions as answers.

Thank you for your time in advance.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Have you tried resetting Windows 10? Settings->Update & security->Recovery->Reset this PC.

This will reinstall Windows and gives you the option of keeping your existing files. As I mentioned in my post none of the troubleshooting mechanisms (resetting , repair , restore to a previous point , restore to a previous build) are working. I can't even get my system to boot in safe mode! It's Shift + spam F8 for Win 10 safemode...That doesnt work either

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Dot net 2.0 and 4.62 are 2 different things....you need Dot net 2.0Dear Patio,

Please go through carefully...as the 2 messages are "Contrary" to each other!
The latter screen suggests that Higher VERSION installed already & the former indicates ---.Net 2.0 OR Higher is required!

But the Higher version is already there (as indicated by the latter section)

Therefore, what's causing such a contrast?

Therefore, what's causing such a contrast?

Microsoft did not foresee at the time that .NET 4 would use a completely new CLR and thus be incompatible with running .NET 2.0 code.Hello BC_Programmer :-)

So kindly help suggest a quick FIX? I have attempted installing the Latest version which in turn is prompting the II of the two messages!

Should I exclusively look out for .NET Framework 2.0 from somewhere & attempt installing the same?

Is that what you intend to suggest?...Please advise. As i TRIED to explain in my Post above and failed miserably at the .Net frameworks are NOT cumulative...
Which means basically a newer version does NOT mean the older version is included.

Basically what it means is if you have an app that needs .net 2.0 then you need to find and install.net 2.0Thanks Patio!

By following your advice I were able to get hold of .NET Framework 2.0 from filehippo.com, & the issue has now disappeared! Great!

EXCELLENT !

Solve : Problem with changing Windows 10 Password?

Answer»

My 3 month old Lenovo has developed a problem with the Ethernet Port so I can't get on line with it unless I get to an area with WiFi. Lenovo asked me to send the computer to them, but to either give them my password, or delete my existing password and back up my files. I tried to change the password and it kept telling me it was having a problem. It neglected to tell me that I had to be online in order to change my password. So, off I went to the downtown WiFi spot, and voila! it brought up the correct window to change it. So I did. And then it asked me to sign in with the new password and did that. Fine, that WORKED. I came back home and typed in the new password and it wouldn't take it. Said I was offline and had to use the LAST password that I'd used offline, which is OLD one that I thought was gone forever. The problem is, I have to get rid of this password because I can't send it to Lenovo Tech Support as some might be rolling on the floor laughing and some might be not so happy. What can I do to get rid of the old password and just use the new one to sign in whether I'm offline or online? Thanks.........Whether they laff or not you need to call the provider...May I say something?
In Windows 10 you can set a 4 digit pin to any four digits you like.
Use of a PIN is sort of like having a nickname of alias. It lets you share you PC with others without giving out the password.
Quote

...result for change windows 10 pin
Follow these simple steps.
    Open Settings (keyboard shortcut: Windows + I) > Accounts > Sign-in options.
Tap or click the Change button under PIN.
Enter your current PIN, then enter and CONFIRM the new PIN underneath.
    Open Settings (keyboard shortcut: Windows + I) > Accounts > Sign-in options.
Tap or click I forgot my PIN.
EXPERIMENT with that. It should work even when you are off line. You can let the technician know the PIN and lather you can change it.
Does that help any?

Solve : System Image Back up?

Answer»
G'Day.. Need a bit of guidance. I just updated my laptop with Win 10.
Need to do a SYstem IMAGE Backup. However it states :
" This drive cannot be used to store a System Image because it is not formatted with NTFS."
I am trying to use a Flash Drive to do this with. Can anyone clue me in.
Hello... which utility are you using to create system image? Additionally have you tried formatting the USB drive to NTFS format and see what happens since thats its error condition? I am not using any utility except the one that is on my PC. Should be a simple Back up
, just concerned I'm going
to mess it up. Never dealt with this before. I have the instructions to change the format to NTFS
just uneasy about it. Just found instructions on how to do it. You mention a utility..what are you speaking of?
I am not familiar with doing this..Formatting a USB Flash drive is completely safe, assuming you dont have anything IMPORTANT on the flash drive. If you were planning on having an image on the flash drive + retain personal data on the flash drive, then you will need to copy whatever data is on this flash drive to a safe location such as a folder on your hard drive named USB_Data or something like that, and then format it the USB drive after that as for formatting will wipe out all data on the USB drive in the process of formatting and making it NTFS format. Most people using a USB drive for storing images dont have other data on the USB flash drive and so this is not a problem, however I have seen before people have 1 USB drive for everything and then accidentally delete their data from it so trying to help you avoid this if that is the case.

Additionally to create a image to USB flash drive the USB flash drive will need to be equal to or greater storage capacity than the drive data that is being IMAGED, so if you have a 1TB hard drive and there is 173GB in use of the 1TB hard drive, you would need a USB Drive that is equal to or greater than 173GB. *Note some utilities compress and so it might squeeze it down to 159GB etc, but its a requirement to have a drive that is large enough for the data that is being stored.

If your creating a factory recovery set using a utility that came with the computer to make this media, the size of the USB flash drive is dependent on the requirements for the computer, such as I have a netbook that requires a 8GB USB flash drive and a Laptop that requires 2 QTY 8GB USB sticks and a single 16GB or greater wont work. Running this utility it will instruct you what you will need for media storage sizes and how many etc.

*For most image backups of a system people find themselves requiring a USB attached external Hard Drive such as a 500GB external USB hard drive such as in the example above with 173GB of data to be imaged to it.

If your creating an image to a USB flash drive I am assuming its a large capacity USB stick such as 64GB or 128GB and your data to be imaged to this drive is lesser than 64GB or 128GB in relation to the USB drive.

Have you verified that the USB drives capacity is ADEQUATE for the image creation process on the USB drive, as for most people use USB external hard drives vs USB flash drives for this process?

I am assuming your using the backup utility feature built into Windows and its not Macrium REFLECT or some other 3rd party software? Thank you much David for your assistance. I went with Crash Plan and everything
is backed up.
I sure do feel better with that out of the way. It just seemed to be such
a daunting task. You made it doable. Again, Thank you David
                                                                         Donnie

Solve : making win10's snippingtool snip ready?

Answer»

In Win7, one just needed to click on Snippintool to make its functionality available. The one in Win10 needs to have NEW clicked before 'image' selection can be made. I am aware that MS deliberately removed that convenience - for their own good (?) REASONS. However, in my use of that TOOL, I FIND the extra step an irritation - HOPEFULLY avoidable. Someone in cyberspace has claimed that it's OK, because you can just launch Snippingtool, and after that all you need to do click on NEW for the functionality. I have not been able to keep Snippingtool open and ready to ACCEPT a click on NEW - so one way my fantasy can be realised is if someone tells me how to KEEP Snippingtool open. The other, is a line of code to emulate clicking on NEW, that I can add to the batchfile which would launch snippingtool. Hope some one can help in one of those two ways.Ctrl + prtscrn launches it...For me CTRL Printscreen just takes a snap of the entire screen (and so do SHIFT Printcsreen and ALT Printscreen) - missing the desired SELECTABILITY/SELECTIVITY that Snipping tool offers. Luckily two other helpers have combined to give me a powershellscript which does exactly what I want. I'm happy to post that here if requested. I see no difference whatsoever between the Snipping Tool on Windows 7 and on Windows 10. With both OS, New needs to be clicked to capture an image.

Folks who use Snipping Tool often can simply pin it to the taskbar.

Edit: Why was this posted in the Windows XP section? Firstly - apologies for posting in the wrong section.
Secondly - I used snippingtool a lot in Win7, so noticed the difference immediately after my upgrade to Win10.
Thirdly - Pinning Snippingtool to the task bar does NOT obviate the need to then click on NEW after launching it
the former being the step the I hoped to eliminate by some clever technique.

As it turns out, some clever people have realised my dream, by giving me a Powershell script which does exactly what I fantasised about.
If requested, I will post the script here. Quote from: soybean on August 08, 2016, 11:28:35 AM

The Windows Vista/7 version acts as if "New" was clicked immediately after it was launched, ready for an area to be chosen. Windows 8 and later change this to require pressing new.

This change, introduced to Windows 8, was explained by Channel9/MS here. Allegedly it was changed based on "Customer Feedback".

The "workaround" that tends to be provided involve powershell or other scripts which start the snipping tool, set focus to it, and basically automatically invoke a new rectangular snip.

Solve : Help me fetch the Latest Anniversary Update of Windows 10.?

Answer»

Hello Members!

Please refer to the enclosed representation & help me suggest on what to do next in order to fetch the Latest Anniversary Update of Windows 10?

Kindly confirm if the Version visible should really be the one preceding the Anniversary Update?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Be patient. Not everyone will get the update on Aug. 2; not enough bandwidth and server capacity EXISTS to update many millions of computers running Windows 10 on the same day. Good advice...ALSO if any other updates are lacking it'll automatically add them...Even though, one year ago, I opted to "reserve" my Windows 7 to Windows 10 update, it took 3 days before i was offered it.

"I have a reservation"

"Sorry we overbooked"

"Do you know what a reservation is?"Great Seinfield episode... Latest Media Creation Tool will get you Update now.You could always go to this page and install the upgrade: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12387/windows-10-update-historyI'd still advise waiting a few days or so.....the servers are buried...

Especially with Windows track record of recovering from interrupted updates.
I've done the upgrade from the link I provided to upgrade 4 machines over the past couple of days. Worked great. Plan to do 2 more today. Elapsed TIME approx ? ?Didn't time it so don't have the exact amount of time but a little over an hour. I've done 7 machines so far and only had a problem with one. On my newest laptop (Dell Inspiron), after upgrading, couldn't see any WIFI HOTSPOTS nor connect to my router via wifi. Luckily, I was able to attach an ethernet cable and update the driver for my wifi card and get it working.
