Solve : RE Partition? |
Answer» I am setting-up my SIL's new PC. It has a Win Tools RE partition. MS says this is a good place to store a back-up image eliminating the need for external media. Is this a good idea? I am thinking not because the main reason I keep a FRESH back-up image on an external HD is in case the internal HD crashes. If the internal HD does crash, maybe I will not be able to access the image in the RE Tools partition? Thanks.I would keep a backup image on an external drive, preferably 2 external drives, to avoid the situation you've DESCRIBED - as you say, if there's an issue with the drive in the machine it's unlikely you'll be able to use the recovery media stored on that drive. On my desktop systems I keep a spare drive in a few of them that I disconnect the sata power from until wanting to clone. If I bork my install I just connect the sata power to the backup drive and boot off that drive and then push the clone from that drive back to the non-backup drive. Then shut it down and unplug the sata power and boot it up and back up and running fresh again. Dave, why do you clone instead of image? I have had nothing but great results with Macrium Reflect Free. |

Solve : putting recycle bin on desktop? |
Answer» I went to desktop settings. The recycle bin icon is checked but I don't see it on my desktop. How do I get it on my desktop? I did a search but it told me to go to desktop settings.Have you tested to see if its off the page.... right-click on the desktop and set the icons to align to bring them all grouped tight together. In some rare SITUATIONS I have seen them get ORPHANED into the nether off the desktop. And doing this brings icons back to desktop that should be there. There are no icons on my desktop. The desktop has the APPS on ITMY BAD... just realized this is Win 10. See Here...I realized my desktop is a list in the lower right corner of the task bar close to where the time is. Quote from: Little Marine on March 27, 2016, 07:30:42 PM I realized my desktop is a list in the lower right corner of the task bar close to where the time is. The Desktop is effectively where you see your background wallpaper. If you press the Windows Key+D, all your windows will be minimized and you will be at the desktop. The setting described in Patio's link should determine whether a Recycle Bin icon appears there. |

Solve : 2 short questions re start and password? |
Answer» I have a Dell, Windows 10, i5-4460 CPU 320 Ghz, 8 gb, 64-bit operating system. For some reason, after I start my computer and don't use the Start button for a while, it becomes inoperable. I can right-click on it and get it to shut down, and when I restart it, it works fine. Also, I have never had a computer that I had to type a password to use it and this one has it. Is there any way to bypass that and just turn the computer on and start using it? I have looked at settings and everything I can figure out (not computer savvy) and am scared to change anything SINCE I'm not sure about it. I know these are small things, but they are bugging me, especially the Start thing. If you don't want to enter your password every time you sign in, you can create other sign-in options to use with your account, like a picture password or a PIN. If your PC has a fingerprint scanner, you can also sign in with a fingerprint. (Whichever sign-in option you choose, you still need a "regular" password in place to use a Microsoft account.) Not sure what would CAUSE your Start button to stop working but as Geek-9pm pointed out, you can switch your Win 10 computer to login with a local account instead of a MS account. If you use a local account you then have the option of having no password. If you didn;t set a password that wouldn't occur...is this a used PC ? ?Sorry, Patio, I didn't ANSWER your last question. No, I bought this computer brand new. However, I did not know what strollin said, that I should login with a local account instead of a MS account. I know MS has been everywhere every single time I want to do something and it drives me nuts! This subject interests me because my Computer will not recognize the password sometimes , I struggle, turning machine on and off until eventually I get access. I will give it a few days before taking the hammer to it.I failed to log in again , TOOK cp to shop, they COULD find nothing wrong, back home , wouldn't work, cp suggests visit accounts live.com. can't do that, not open, back to shop, they decided it must be a faulty key board, New board, still not working, but eventually succeeded, I am now going to accounts live.com, I changed some details, Forget what, but it does not matter because the problem has disappeared, its all to do with your mail :)server. |

Solve : Windows 10 Stuck on "Preparing For The Upgrade"? |
Answer» Hi The media creation tool can be used to upgrade your current PC to Windows 10 or to create a USB or DVD and install Windows 10 on a different PC. My install of Windows 10 was a 'Clean install' from media, not the upgrade option. However, it was not necessary for me to buy a license key for Windows 10. If you can revert back to the original Windows 7, I suggest you do that. Next resize the hard disk partition so that Windows 10 will have enough free space for a clean install rather that trying to update your windows 7 system. Windows 10 installer CREATES a dual boot system if you do not upgrade the Windows 7 system. It is not clear to me if Microsoft did a recent change to its license policy for Windows 10. EDIT: The link below may have new INFORMATION: http://www.howtogeek.com/226510/how-to-use-your-free-windows-10-license-after-changing-your-pc%E2%80%99s-hardware/ |

Solve : Why such different results?? |
Answer» Probably a stupid question, but why are we getting such differing results from upgrading to 10? I personally have either done or over SEEN the upgrade of two laptops and had virtually no problems at all after upgrading, yet thus from and others are full of problems people are having with 10. Why is this, the new OS should either work or not, ESPECIALLY after Vista and 8? Is it just the variety of computer tech out there? PRETTY much. Software is deterministic, but how software might interact with other software or hardware is not. A good example is the software I work on. It goes out to a number of different customers, but bugs will only be reported by certain customers, or some customers might have no problems. This comes down to how they use the software, just as in the case of Windows 10. This is compounded, as it always has been with any Windows version, when dealing with an upgrade installation, because now pre-existing configurations or issues can compound with the new OS. Windows 10 is also only the second "major" OS release to be provided through Windows Update (after Windows 8.1), which probably adds it's own special brand of problems. From what I can tell that special brand of problems seems to be uninformative, IMPRECISE errors. I was also wondering if any particular make or model of pc was causing more problems than others? I have a Packard Bell desktop which I am keen to upgrade but haven't as yet. We also have 3 Asus laptops in the house, one of which has been running 10 fine for a month now, another still on 7 and a third has has recently been upgraded but now has gone into a boot loop and needs resetting. So are upgrade problem random or can I anticipate probl3ms with the other Asus machines?Expanding from what BC said, software is deterministic. That should mean that if all three Asus machines a re the same , the results should be the same. Popular Brand Name, in itself, does not determine any kinship of hardware devices. In fact, the makes often make major changes to the products and give them similar model names. Now if we were TALKING about fine wine made of special grapes, we expect the taste to be almost the same even from different wine makers. With that as our metaphorical trick. For computers, you might buy a PC that claims to be a Burgundy, ** but it tastes like Lemon juice. ** Bourgogne is the French name of Burgundy, one of the 26 regions of France. So the grape is associated with that area. All Cognacs are Brandy...not all Brandy's are Cognacs. So as i thought really, no two machines are the same, despite being made by the same brand. Bit like people really........ |

Solve : Restart Loop and "Other User" On Login Screen After System Refresh? |
Answer» Total novice here: I am hoping someone can give me some guidance. My brother-in-law was my computer man and he passed away recently. I may have just messed everything up and I have no one to help. When the"Other User" login comes up have you tried just hitting Enter instead of your User info ? ? Yes. It just tells me to enter a username and password.Did the repair ever finish OK ? ?...or is that when the auto re-boot start happening ? ? Quote from: patio on September 11, 2015, 04:29:56 PM Did the repair ever finish OK ? ?...or is that when the auto re-boot start happening ? ? The repair finished with no issue, but booted to the login issue. Then the refresh installed normally and went to 100%, but I could never get to that, "Just A Few More Steps" part after login because I can't login and it won't open in Safe Mode.I would try re-doing the Win10 update...i still think it didn't complete properly although you had the 1st successful boot.I will try that again. The same. It loaded to 100% on the loading screen, then loaded to 100% with the circle where it says "You computer will restart several times. Sit back and relax." Then, when complete, it goes to the login screen and it still says "OTHER USER" and asks for a login and password that it won't ACCEPT, then it reboots. In Safe Mode, all of our logins are there with PHOTOS and I can log in. If all else fails, I can try a RESET that removes everything and then, as a last ditch effort, reset to factory settings, rolling back to Windows 8. I just don't have any other storage big enough to hold all of my crap, so I would lose a great deal. Okay, just in case this helps. I used Run>msconfig and chose Diagnostic startup. It booted, not in Safe Mode, but obviously with limited features. My desktop photo is there now, as well as our usernames and, obviously, doesn't say Safe Mode. Is there some sort of program on startup that's causing this? ETA more information: Choosing Selective Startup and unchecking Load Startup Items takes me back to the Other User screen which starts the reboot loop. Choosing Selective Startup and unchecking Load system services gets me to the login screen with our pics and usernames, but then it starts the reboot loop. I have no connection in Safe Mode with Networking, so it's impossible to run any virus scan, as I just did the refresh. |

Solve : Can not upgrade hard drive on windows 10.? |
Answer» About two weeks ago I upgraded a Windows 7 install to Windows 10. The Windows 7 install was a 64 bit version that I had used before. I was act titivated properly. But one PROBLEM I did not anticipate. I did the upgrade to Windows 10 while the Windows 7 was on a 80 GB hard drive. I meant to use one of my 500 GB drives. You can clone a HDD to an external enclosure...you should have one...you just can't boot it from external.Did it! Took hours! Had to find a good free backup software that would work right. At last I used Macrium Reflect and it did the job, but the way I though it would. I made an image of the small drive and did can restored it to the larger drive. I keep the size the same. Fix that later, if needed. Some forums report you lose the activation. But mine is valid. This question is not the TR version of Win 10, but the real end of JULY version for update from 7 or 8. See here: http://www.tenforums.com/windows-updates-activation/19448-windows-10-activation-cloning-hdd.html Now I can go to bed. (It is after 10 PM here in California.) |

Solve : Windows 10 Update Policy? |
Answer» See, here's the problem with forced updates. Since a recent Windows update a number of folks have lost their icons for Microsoft Edge (I did), have lost the ability to launch Edge, and have had serious issues with the start menu. Since a recent Windows update a number of folks have lost their icons for Microsoft Edge (I did), have lost the ability to launch Edge, and have had serious issues with the start menu. Allan, why do these bugs appear randomly, affecting a relatively small percentage of users? Is it a function of specific hardware or perhaps the installed programs/apps? Just seems wierd. Quote from: artbuc on August 19, 2015, 08:02:49 AM Allan, why do these bugs appear randomly, affecting a relatively small percentage of users? Is it a function of specific hardware or perhaps the installed programs/apps? Just seems wierd. The same reason that Car models can have a recall on something that hasn't affected some people. Not everybody updates right away (I think you can defer them), and not everybody would use the software affected by the update. If somebody doesn't use Edge, they aren't going to notice that they can't launch it. It can also depend strongly on configuration settings. The issues do not appear "randomly"- it only appears random if the cause is unknown. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 19, 2015, 11:49:01 AM The same reason that Car models can have a recall on something that hasn't affected some people. Ok, but I did the same updates and Edge works fine. Maybe random is not the right word. Re the car analogy, recalls are almost always the result of a faulty batch of parts. There is evidence that a particular batch of parts will have an unacceptably high failure rate although only a few parts will fail. However, we are all getting the same software (I think) and our machines were working fine before the update created a problem. Not debating, just curious. And Edge works fine for me too (though I use Firefox as my default browser) - I just lost the icon (which I eventually replaced). But every system is different and some hw/sw configurations do not react well to some updates while others have no problems. Ditto drivers and some software. While MS and other hw manufacturers do their best to write software / drivers that will be compatible with as many configurations as possible, it's not feasible for them to foresee or anticipate all of the various permutations and combinations of software and hardware that we, the users, will throw together. I'm constantly astounded at some of the things users will do with / to their systems and still expect them to work as designed. Just read through forums such as CH - sometimes it's just jaw dropping Quote from: artbuc on August 19, 2015, 12:23:33 PM Ok, but I did the same updates and Edge works fine. Alright. Another example. One of our products is a software package for managing a Marina. It is software, so it has bugs. When we release a new version to multiple places typically bugs only appear on specific sites. Sometimes only on specific workstations Why? Because the bug might require that lineal moorage is being used. Perhaps the bug only manifests if they are using lineal moorage and accepting US tender on a Open reservation from a Customer who was not present on the last End of Month report. The bug might only appear on systems that have flags NOT set to specific settings because somewhere we might have forgotten about the 500+ flag settings we need to check. Maybe a bug is only present if the customer upgraded from a specific earlier version and skipped a version. maybe a report works fine in 5 places, but doesn't show the right account balances at another because that one site uses Open Item rather than Balance Forward style accounting. Or maybe that one place has been customized and is set to use 4-digit accuracy which conflicts with an accidental assumption towards the default 5 digits. And I doubt our software is more complicated than Windows. Quote However, we are all getting the same softwareThis is not really the case! While many of the same updates GO to most systems, some updates aren't applicable to others or are applicable only to certain systems. For example, Driver updates provided through Windows Update only appear to people with devices that apply, and certain updates may only be available/suggested or classed as Important based on your system configuration. If a bug is discovered in a component that means that, if a given setting is enabled that certain files may be corrupted, then an update is made available to fix that issue, but a separate update may be shown as available only for systems that have that setting enabled which effectively tries to fix the data issues. And that update could itself have issues or maybe the corruption fix causes other problems based on other particulars such as your file system.Thx Allan and BC. Have much better understanding now. What about when the "bug" affects the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 (and others) & it still hasn't been acknowledged or fixed? It's an issue that affects Windows 10 CONNECTED Standby. A password is required when waking up, even when all settings say not to. http://www.howtogeek.com/189224/how-connected-standby-works-or-why-your-windows-8-pcs-battery-drains-so-fast/ https://www.reddit.com/r/Surface/comments/3f69db/surface_pro_3_requires_password_after_sleep/ This is a big one, don't know how they missed it. it's a Microsoft product, no excuse for it not working from the RTM.I don't noticed that since I never use microsoft edge. However, edge can be seen when you scroll the apps button.I have the reverse problem. Cant get any updates to install, automaticaly or manually. Would love to be in the position of wanting to turn off autiomatic updates. I have long held the opinon that Windows Updates are a nessesary evil. They might be a pain, they might seem to be cluttering up your machine but in this day and age i would be worried about running a machine without regular updates of the OS. Back in the XP days i used to be selective with Win Updates and sometimes would stop them altogether. I subsequently had problems when a key update (.Net framework i think) got missed and i had a lot of trouble getting the update and putting things right. After that i always allowed Updates to happen automaticaly, even though sometimes i felt certain updates slowed the PC down for a while. There were updates today for Win10-64bit. Among them is: • Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081455). A reboot has been scheduled. |

Solve : using PIN to sign on to Windows 10? |
Answer» I am still using Insider Preview version of Windows 10; it's actually a version that was released subsequent to the release of Windows 10 to the general public. It is Build 10525. Today, I was prompted to create a PIN to sign on instead of using a password. Have any of you encountered this? I had the release ver. of 10...now have the full release...neither have prompted me for a PIN logon...Interesting. The Insider Preview program is still active, and those who participate receive builds of new versions of Windows 10. the released version is Build 10240; Soybean has 10525, so presumably this PIN feature is something they've added since general availability and is only available to those still part of the Insider Preview program.Got it...Thanx.I have 2 machines running Windows 10 1. 64 bit upgrade from Windows 7 (10.0.10240) 2. 32 bit Insider Preview (10.0.10532) Both have the "Create a PIN to use in place of passwords" option in Settings - Accounts - Sign-in options. To get it to show you may need to ENSURE that this setting is disabled: Local Security Policy - Local Policies - Security Options - Interactive logon: Do not display last user name When this policy is set to Enabled, apart from the Last User Name, neither Picture Password nor PIN is displayed at logon. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/pin-and-picture-password-logon-not-offered-windows All 5 of my Win10 machines are set to auto-login. Solve : Graphics driver quitting, and weird sound distortion.? |
Answer» I installed windows 10 on launch day and for a couple weeks everything was fine. Now once every couple days i get this weird sound distortion and the SCREEN goes black and then the only thing i can do is hit the RESET button on my case. Everything starts up like normal and i can even go back to playing the game most of the time(this only happens when i'm in the middle of a game). Sometimes i just get frame DROPS that make the game stutter Until i restart my computer but that doesn't work all the time either. other times when i'm in a skype call with friends or something, and this happens, those that i'm in the call with get a loud static noise from me. And the last symptom is that i keep getting the message, graphics driver not responding or graphics driver quitting(something ALONG those lines). I really HOPE this is just a problem with windows 10. |

Solve : Windows 10 Restarts Rather than Shuts Down? |
Answer» About 3 weeks ago, shortly after Windows 10 was released, I went thru the Windows 10 upgrade in place procedure on my HP 590t I7 processor desktop machine (which had no problems prior to the upgrade). About 10 days afterward, I believe following installation of a Microsoft rollup update, each time I chose to "shut down" the PC, it began to shutdown (all power lights would GO off, and all activity cease); and after a few seconds would restart. I have searched the internet for solutions and have TRIED all that I could find. For example, I have disabled in BIOS the "wake on LAN" option; I have removed, thoroughly cleaned, and replaced my CMOS battery; I have CHECKED all my Power options and found them to be set correctly. I have always disabled the sleep and hibernate options on computers I use. All these actions have been unsuccessful in correcting the problem. Now, each evening when I shut the computer down until the next day, I'm forced to wait for the computer to shut down, then wait for the inevitable restart, and hold the power button down until the actual shutdown occurs. (1) Registry:Does the same thing happen if you shut down from safe mode? For Allan: Yes, one of the first things I tried was booting into safe mode; again, no success. Thanks.I also reported this issue to the Microsoft sponsored forum, but received no helpful response. However, I have continued to search daily for a solution. I believe I may have found something which may be helpful to at least try (if you also have this issue). It appears that it may have solved my problem, and I want to make other unfortunate souls aware of it. Open Device Manager - expand the entry for Keyboard ( my Device Manager lists two identical entries for HID Keyboard Device) - right click on each entry in turn and select Properties - On the resulting screen, select the Power Management tab - uncheck the box adjacent to "Allow this device to wake the computer" - Then click Okay. Again, do this for all entries under Keyboard in Device Manager. Also under Device Manager, expand the entry for Mice and other pointing devices - Again, my Device Manager lists two identical entries for HID-compliant mouse. Follow the same procedure as LISTED above for the keyboard entries. For the sake of my sanity, please report back to this forum whether or not this worked for you. I'm so gun-shy now of shutting down my computer, I doubt I will ever again trust the computer to shut down when so instructed, but after testing it five times, it has worked each of those times. |

Solve : File History not detecting my data drive?? |
Answer» Hi everyone, Windows 8/8.1 and 10 File History is a bit like Previous Versions in Windows Vista and 7, but it has to be set up and configured first. Unlike the System Restore-integrated file recovery in older Windows versions, File History keeps most backups on a separate hard drive, removable drive (external hard drive or USB stick) or network drive - only a small amount of previous versions are kept on the drive where Windows is installed. The article goes on to give a full TUTORIAL with screen shots. Your backups ought to be on a separate hard drive. Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 17, 2015, 01:54:19 PM You are right. It does not always work like you want. Right, and that's why I'm confused. Going by the listed options: Quote File History keeps most backups on a separate hard drive, removable drive (external hard drive or USB stick) or network drive It should be detecting at least two additional drives; I have my system SSD, a SATA HDD for storing programs and some user files, then my larger SATA HDD for storing backups. I'm not sure how much the article can help me at this point - I'm pretty familiar with setting up File History by now, and I'm fairly certain that my larger HDD (which I refer to as my data drive, sorry if that was confusing) would be available. |

Is this a general problem or something specific to my DESKTOP settings? Thanks. QUOTE from: artbuc on August 16, 2015, 02:48:48 AM Is this a general problem or something specific to my desktop settings?Hi Art. I have noticed the same thing with the weather app in Windows 10. I discovered something which will help a bit. With the weather app open, clicking the Home button near the top of the left menu column will refresh the display. The same technique might work with the Financial app. Thank-you so MUCH for the tip. Works on both apps. A BIG improvement. |

Solve : How do I uninstall Windows 10??? |
Answer» My husband DOWNLOADED the new Window's 10 and hates it, and wanted me to remove it. According to Microsoft you have an option to go back to previous Windows for the first 30 days... He has had it 4 days....and it doesn't not give us an option to uninstall and reinstall Windows 8.1... Any help is appreciated... He's driving me crazy over this.... 1) Here are detailed instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/ 2) For future reference, you should NEVER perform any major change or software installation without first creating a disc image to which you can easily return. EVERYONE should USE disc imaging software on a regular basis 3) W10 and W8 are VERY similar. What is it he doesn't like?Change... LOL Quote from: SheIsMe on August 12, 2015, 01:15:59 PM Change... So why isn't he still on Windows 95? Quote from: Allan on August 12, 2015, 12:49:26 PM 1) Here are detailed instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/ Allan, are you still recommending Macrium Reflect? I use the free edition and it seems to work fine. I only had to use the back-up once when my HD FAILED back when I was using XP. It worked perfectly. I ask because on another forum, a person who apparently does computer work for a living, said Reflect images were unreliable and he recommended Acronis. Thanks.IMO, Acronis True Image is the best of breed, but it is not free. Macrium Reflect is still ONE of the best free options (THOUGH there are several others). And Macrium images are certainly as reliable as any others - just be sure to verify images when they are created (as you should with ANY disc imaging software - including Acronis). |

Solve : My sisters computer won't start after the update.? |
Answer» So, my younger sister recently updated her Windows 8.1 personal computer to Windows 10. It played like normal, and when it was time for her to go to bed, she turned it off. Pretty normal. Then, this morning, when she tries to turn it on, it won't even show the logo screen. No error report, no screen, just a VOID of a black screen. When we tried to hit the power button, it would work like normal, though the monitor wouldn't turn on. It is a DELL monitor, if that makes a difference. The computer itself is a Gateway Computer. If you need any more information, ask me. Windows 10 controls the external monitor. Go to Settings---Display---Multiple displays---Duplicate these displays. I have already put the computer in storage by the time I have replied, though I wasn't able to get to those settings. |

Solve : Dual Boot Win 7? |
Answer» I completed upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10. So far everything seems to be working great. I have a Macrium image of my C drive with Win 7 on an external HD. Can I create a new partition on my C drive and restore my Win 7 image there? That way I can dual boot to either OS. I have done some research and it appears to be a relatively easy thing to do, even for a computer dummy like myself. Can someone advise me or give me a link to the BEST/easiest way to do this? Thanks.I am a certified computer dummy and I can tell you it is never easy. If your computer's hard disk has adequate free disk space, you can install a newer version of Windows on a separate partition and keep the earlier version of Windows on your computer. This is CALLED a multiboot or dual-boot configuration. Whenever you start your computer, you can then choose which version of Windows to run. For more information... Thanks Geek. Yes, that is what I concluded after some more reading. As I understand it, my W7 license became my W10 license when I did the free upgrade. I am very happy with 10 so I have lost interest in the dual boot. I am keeping a couple 7 Macrium images just in case, at least for a little while.I think there is an option in Windows 10 to revert back to Windows 7 if you are not happy. But some documentation is needed. The link below seems to be right. http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/ Quote Don’t like Windows 10? As long as you’ve upgraded within the last month, you can uninstall Windows 10 and downgrade your PC back to its original Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 operating system. You can always upgrade to Windows 10 again later. In my case, I keep the documents in a separate place in my backups so that I can restore the documents after a fresh install. Because a clean install with erase the partition. EDIT: The link above seems to be the best on how to downgrade Widows 10 the right way. It has screen shots that are very helpful. No need to discuss downgrading now. He said he is happy with Windows 10. Quote from: soybean on August 11, 2015, 10:58:46 AM No need to discuss downgrading now. He said he is happy with Windows 10.Right, I posted the link to answer the original question for the benefit of others. The downgrade feature is an important move made by Microsoft to help people decide. Just knowing that you can downgrade makes the decision to try easier for some. Quote from: artbuc on August 11, 2015, 02:03:42 AM Thanks Geek. Yes, that is what I concluded after some more reading. I am keeping a couple 7 Macrium images just in case, at least for a little while. That's exactly what I have done. Did get a dual boot to work but probably SPENT a week on it. The issue is the EFI file which resides on the System partition; Macrium has a "fix boot" but it didn't work on the dual boot configuration, Win10-Pro & Win7-Home. I could select Win10 & it would boot Win7 & after a mod, vice versa. Visual BCD did the final fix. |

Solve : window 10 wont boot? |

I generally logon and look for 0's and then 1's to check to see where they are at, and then look for others with multiple replies that might need assistance although usually those with 2 or more replies are generally well taken care of by other specialists here. You don't need to EXPLAIN anything Dave. You're one of our stalwarts - PART of the backbone here at CH.Right BC. I saw the lone post from Dave (with one question in it, which I certainly agree is the right question to ask), and the OP had marked it as solved with the green checkmark, I assumed after Dave's question. I meant it as humorous sarcasm. I see what's happening now. One or more members saw that it was solved before Dave's question, then I come along and post the reply which I did. I see from that perspective how it could come across as very sarcastic, and I APOLOGIZE for that. What are the 0's and 1's which Dave is referring to, and how does one tell at which point in time an OP marks a topic as solved? Quote Where can i get a Magna-Broom 3000 ? ? This was a broom I made at my last job that my boss got a kick out of. I worked on lots of computer equipment in a grey textured carpet IT office that was like 10 ft by 20ft with a 8ft x 6ft parts closet and common computer case screws etc would fall and good luck finding them on the carpet. I had a tray full of random screws etc and so I would just grab another to complete the job. Later I would take my broom that had very strong hard drive magnets duck taped to the bottom of the boom and sweep the floor and the screws from like 5 inches away would fly over to the super strong magnets. I then could pick the screws etc off of the duck tapes magnets and add them back to my tray. My boss saw this and said what is that and I joked and said its the Magna-Broom 3000 and he had a good laugh at that. I had to store this magna-broom in a corner away from floppies and drives etc. Added it to my profile here quite a ways ago as a joke although fact of being the inventor of this broom. Solve : Might have cloned my SSD to another folder. Any way to reverse it?? |

Answer» Here are some images that might give a better idea of what I'm dealing with. I'm not quite sure how to exactly EXPLAIN my problem, but basically, my "Music" folder that COMES as a pre-installed folder on Windows is now a clone of my SSD. I was relocating everything to my HDD when it happened, so I must have screwed something up. Is there any way for me to separate the two? It's weird having two files with the same stuff in them. If I DELETE any of the folders, they disappear from the SSD. Also, when I try to relocate the folder, it gives me an error. The album below shows what one of my regular pre-installed files looks like in properties, and what the CLONED one looks like. |

Solve : Upgrading windows 10 insider preview to windows 10?? |
Answer» So a while ago I installed windows 10 insider preview pro x64 onto my "new" daily computer as the only os. Why would they ? ? They are giving it away...Only to Insiders and owners of qualifying OS installs. And he stated he had the preview installed...i kinda didn't need to qualify my statement...It finished 90 minutes ago. (I had to do other things between then and now) Now I it doesn't even say its an insider copy. But does that mean I still get insider updates? I covered up my product ID [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]if you run 'winver' you'll see the build number. the last Preview build was 10240, which is also the same build as RTM. You don't need to "upgrade" from that final Preview build to the released version because the two are identical. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 01, 2015, 05:24:20 PM You don't need to "upgrade" from that final Preview build to the released version because the two are identical. Its not that I needed to, but that it allowed me to. I was running 10162 and the update was taking forever to download on my WiFi, so I tryed the upgrade. What surprised me, and caused the suspission to post, was that it went from insider preview to just pro. BTW Doesn't the build number show up in the command prompts first line when you open it? Quote from: TheWaffle on August 01, 2015, 09:12:11 PM Doesn't the build number show up in the command prompts first line when you open it? Yes, or you can use the VER command to find out the build: (1) Insider build 10240 fresh install C:\>ver Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10240] (2) Upgraded Windows 7 C:\>ver Microsoft Windows [Version 10.0.10240] Quote from: TheWaffle on August 01, 2015, 09:12:11 PM What surprised me, and caused the suspission to post, was that it went from insider preview to just pro. There is no insider preview build of 10240 because that build was the RTM build. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 02, 2015, 11:58:31 AM There is no insider preview build of 10240 because that build was the RTM build.Installations of build 10240 can have either Insider or regular licensing status. Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 02, 2015, 12:56:31 PM Installations of build 10240 can have either Insider or regular licensing status. I was under the impression that they would all list "Windows 10 Pro" as The PC I have had running Windows 10 since the Preview versions says "Windows 10 Pro" in the PC Information dialog, same as the system that I upgraded via a Windows 10 MSDN disc. Recap: When I ran insider preview build 10162: under System, in the control panel, it said something like "Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview". Then I ran the upgrade from a usb install media, (made using microsoft's tool) and it went through upgrade process, from what I can tell, as if I was running win7 or 8.1. Now it says I am running Windows 10 Pro. The build is 10240. How can I tell what edition of windows I am running from my product key? (Not pro/ home) but Volume Licensing, Retail, OEM, or Insider Preview? Quote from: BC_Programmer I was under the impression that they would all list "Windows 10 Pro" What you saw in System changed with build 10240. Insiders who got the update to 10240 from July 15 onward didn't see "Windows 10 Insider Preview" any more. They just saw "Windows 10 Pro". The point I was trying to make is that there are two ways someone could have an activated Windows 10 build 10240: 1. By having been enrolled in the Insider program, and installing to, or upgrading to, Insider build 10240 on July 15. No need for a qualifying previous OS install. Their builds remain activated after July 29. These people will remain activated and receive updates, along as they remain in the Insider program. if they leave that program, their install will become de-activated and they will need to buy a license. All Insider buids were Pro. 2. By having, on or after July 29, a qualifying previous OS which they either upgrade or replace with a fresh install. These people don't have any obligations, they are perpetually licensed. They will get an appropriate Windows 10 install and license (Home or Pro) depending on the previous OS edition. Gabe Aul: "Upcoming changes to Windows 10 Insider Preview builds" Quote The crux of it is this: http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/06/19/upcoming-changes-to-windows-10-insider-preview-builds/ |

Solve : Random restart every few days - Windows 10? |
Answer» Current Specs CPU: A8-6500 APU (3.5GHz stock, 4.1GHz turbo) GPU: R7 240 2GB RAM: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz 1.5V (2x2GB 2x4GB) PSU: Corsair 450w (CX450M) HDD: WD 1TB Blue OS: Windows 10 64-bit (The computer is a pre-built. Model: HP Pavilion 500-326na. No overclocks.) The computer randomly restarts sometimes without any warning. This normally happens every 1-3 days. It has happened when under full load and also idle, so I very much doubt that it is a temperature issue. When it happens there is no BSOD, no "restarting" blue screen, no nothing. Just straight up off and on again. In the event viewer, i get the error "Critical Kernel-Power 41 (63)". I've had this issue for a few months now and it's driving me crazy. (Will provide logs, files and screenshots if needed) Things I've DONE to try and resolve the issue:
No joke, I literally can't afford to keep buying random new parts and hoping it fixes the issue. Is there anyway to find out how to fix the issue or to find what exactly is causing the issue? Any help will be very much appreciated.I would suggest adding a battery backup. And make sure the computer is plugged into the battery backup plug vs just the surge plug. This will completely eliminate the chances that the power to your computer getting interrupted from a short dip in power. This will also protect your computer for short power outages as well as power surges etc. You can get one for around $50. If the problem continues after this then it could be something with the motherboard or APU.I'm pretty certain that there aren't any issue with the power outlets since every other electronic device I use doesn't have this issue. Is there anyway to tell if it's the Mobo or CPU for sure? (I've already check the motherboard for faulty / bad looking capacitors, didn't find any) Are any other devices a PC? PC's are very sensitive to the slightest fluctuations in power to the home. A friend of mine had an apartment and couldnt figure out why his computer would randomly crash. He too tried different outlet etc. It wasnt until he added a battery backup that the problem was fixed. The issue was his power was shared with another tenant and he didnt know that at first until he realized that the battery backup with click to intervene one day when his neighbor was using the microwave when he left his door to apartment open for a friend and heard the neighbor next door start the microwave oven to make popcorn. He ended up contacting the landlord to check into why both tenants had shared power, it was because it use to be a large house that was bought and converted into an apartment. Landlord SAID your rent covers the electric bill so I never thought to put each person on their own meter. And something along the lines of that he isnt going to rewire the apartments to be on their own power. The good thing is that the battery backup was his solution. It might not be your solution for this or maybe it could be. Its not a bad power protection device to have with every PC to protect your hardware and data. As far as if its the Motherboard or APU. That would be the same troubleshooting method as what you have already been doing which is replacing components in hope that the problem goes away and when it goes away you then know the cause. Stress testing doesnt make it act up though and thats where it points my troubleshooting skills back to the power to the PC, in which the battery backup will eliminate this if its the problem. If its not the problem you will have protection that you didnt have before. You have already replaced the power supply with a good name brand power supply, so thats eliminated from cause. And all connections on the inside are secure and proper vs intermittent I am assuming. * wiggling a plug with very little force to see if you can get it to crash could be a troubleshooting method for a intermittent connection, but it can also damage hardware. Going to ASSUME this is not the case and its still power related to the PC which is the more probable cause. This is from dictation. Here is a general method to help anybody determine if the problem is from software or from hardware. The amount of time this method involves may very but expect it can take anywhere from 4 to 12 hours to produce meaningful results. Locate, borrow or buy a spare hard drive that is compatible with your system. Remove the existing hard drive completely and put this newly acquired spare hard drive in place install an operating system you have at hand and that you BELIEVE to be reliable. Possibly you have at hand an old copy of MS-DOS 6.22 or something like that. A copy of Ubuntu Linux would also do. Install the alternative operating system. Now then start up some program that will give you some sort of graphical interface or please something that will stay on the screen and give you a visual clue. Not just walk away and leave the computer by itself if your computer customarily reboots in every three hours, you should have your answer by the time FOUR hours has gone. But to be sure, you might even wait overnight. If you come back later and you see that would have you had on the screen before is gone and the system has rebooted, then you know there is some kind of crooking your hardware that is causing the system to reboot. Otherwise, whatever message you had put on the screen would still be there. Of course, the thing is probably going into sleep mode or hibernate mode, and if so, you can touch a key in the keyboard and the system will come back to life. This method usually resolves a question of whether not so hardware the software. Basically what we did is just replace the hard drive and the operating system to see if that made a difference in the behavior. Most of the time you'll find that is not the hardware at all, it was something to do with the operating system or some program that is is operating in the background. End of dictation. I tried leaving the system running at a friends house for a couple days; It still has the problem. So it 100% isn't a power issue. Also tried a running Linux distribution (Lubuntu to be exact) on another hard drive, again, it didn't fix the issue. Seeing as I've tested everything else, it's gotta be the motherboard right? Download BlueScreenView: http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program. when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyNote:...could still be a power issue depending on which PSU you bought...It's not a blue screen issue, BSView comes up with nothing. No logs, no nothing. The PSU is perfectly fine. Works without issue on other systems + it's only a few weeks old. Quote from: Cloby on January 31, 2018, 09:54:10 AM It's not a blue screen issue, BSView comes up with nothing. No logs, no nothing. Okay. Just to be sure, please go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and UNcheck "automatically restart". Either way, there's no harm in changing that setting.+ 1 One of the dumber default MS settings....i've seen many others. This is from dictation. Did he say he tried a Linux distribution and it had the exact same behavior? And he even took it to a neighbors house and showed the same exact behavior? That is very hard to understand. Are there any other indications that something is going wrong? Such as loss of time and date, or extremely slow Internet connection or anything to indicate a major hardware fault. Here's my best guess. Something has got into the firmware, either a very strange setting, core very improbably some kind of virus in the firmware. The possibility of a virus firmware is almost impossible because people who make viruses find their much easier targets than people's firmware. Anyway, if it is a firmware issue, the solution would be to greet install new firmware by downloading the firmware update from the manufacture and going through the update process. In very rare cases the firmware becomes unreliable and this is near impossible to troubleshoot with ordinary tools. The only diagnostic is to try flashing the firmware again and see if that changes the behavior. I am only mentioning this because the things that reported seem to be so unlikely and improbable. End of dictation. Quote "Critical Kernel-Power 41 (63)" Quote from: Cloby on January 31, 2018, 09:54:10 AM It's not a blue screen issue, BSView comes up with nothing. No logs, no nothing. This tells us nothing...What Make and Model PSU is it ? ?I've already tried the "uncheck automatically restart", no luck unfortunately. The power supply is the Corsair CX450M (Like I've already said, it certainly not a power supply or outlet issue). The system starts to randomly freeze now too, causing me to have to switch it off and on again. "Did he say he tried a Linux distribution and it had the exact same behavior?" - Yes, with a new hard drive too. "And he even took it to a neighbors house and showed the same exact behavior?" - Yes. So am I correct that the one thing that has been constant through all your attempts is the motherboard? Is it possible that you have determined that's the only thing that could still be causing the problem? |

Answer» Much controversity about privacy and Win 10. More information here.If you try & block or remove all Win10 "SPYING", some things no longer function. If they want to spy on me & 100+ million others, "be my guest". I don't use most of the new apps, except for Feedback. SD, have you come across a single reference that covers all of the privacy settings comprehensively? I have read a number of articles and they tend to cite just a few examples. I have changed many settings to increase privacy but am not sure I got all of them. Thanks.I haven't seen anything comprehensive yet.MS doesn't even know...In the UK the MAGAZINE WebUser has just published an EIGHT page article on this, giving lots of advice on dos and don'ts. They conclude it is no worse than Google, Facebook etc. but recommend (among others) the following free utilities: O&O ShutUp10 bit.ty/shutup380 Windows Privacy Fixer bit.ly/privfix380 Here is MS' response. |
