Solve : RE Partition?

Answer»

I am setting-up my SIL's new PC. It has a Win Tools RE partition. MS says this is a good place to store a back-up image eliminating the need for external media. Is this a good idea? I am thinking not because the main reason I keep a FRESH back-up image on an external HD is in case the internal HD crashes. If the internal HD does crash, maybe I will not be able to access the image in the RE Tools partition? Thanks.I would keep a backup image on an external drive, preferably 2 external drives, to avoid the situation you've DESCRIBED - as you say, if there's an issue with the drive in the machine it's unlikely you'll be able to use the recovery media stored on that drive.
Personally I have an external drive by my PC and my gf has an external drive in the other room, every 4-6 weeks I image my PC to my drive, she images her laptop to her drive, then we swap, so both drives have a reasonably up to date image of both machines. On my desktop systems I keep a spare drive in a few of them that I disconnect the sata power from until wanting to clone. If I bork my install I just connect the sata power to the backup drive and boot off that drive and then push the clone from that drive back to the non-backup drive. Then shut it down and unplug the sata power and boot it up and back up and running fresh again.

The reason why I went this route is because I accidentally wiped my images before on externals and then in time of need I no LONGER have them. I found a sweet deal on 80GB SATA drives for $9.99 each through goharddrive.com and bought 3 of these brand new drives and dedicated them inside the case for this clone purpose. The Windows 7 systems only used about 40GB of the 80GB for clean install with my choice of software as STANDARD build. I use Macrium Reflect to clone for free.

Reason for having the backup drive installed without power is 2 reasons... why have it spinning putting wear on it as well as drawing power as well as why have the backup drive live which if system is hit with malware or virus it could easily spread like fire among other drives if designed to infect and target more than just the C: drive. Solve : Secure Boot Image failed to verify with *ACCESS DENIED*?

Answer»

Hello, I was wondering if any of you might be able to help me. Today I opened my laptop and saw a message that read: Secure Boot Image failed to verify with *ACCESS DENIED* Press any key to continue.

I can enter BIOS w/F1 when I press the power key, but that seems to be the only place I can go, and most of the options are GRAYED out. I pressed F11 on startup in an attempt to restore the system, but all I'm able to get is a stationary white cursor line in the upper left corner of a blank screen. Any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated.

(Background: My computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 Carbon, and I was running Windows 8 until the free Windows 10 upgrade came out a few months ago. I haven't installed anything in a while except Windows and Lenovo updates. I've had a bit of a heating issue, so eight days ago I replaced the thermal paste. The machine's been running much cooler, but I've been EXPERIENCING random hibernations--usually once every 3 hrs. or so, but occasionally two in 15 min. A few of those times, I had a message that said something about my battery not being detected, and this happened both when the computer was plugged in and when it wasn't. It still charged like NORMAL.)Hello LindaD, Wow, is there a forum you haven't asked about this? Solve : Office 2010 32 bit on Win 10 Home 64?

Solve : 2 short questions re start and password?

Answer»

I have a Dell, Windows 10, i5-4460 CPU 320 Ghz, 8 gb, 64-bit operating system. For some reason, after I start my computer and don't use the Start button for a while, it becomes inoperable. I can right-click on it and get it to shut down, and when I restart it, it works fine. Also, I have never had a computer that I had to type a password to use it and this one has it. Is there any way to bypass that and just turn the computer on and start using it? I have looked at settings and everything I can figure out (not computer savvy) and am scared to change anything SINCE I'm not sure about it. I know these are small things, but they are bugging me, especially the Start thing.
Read this:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/disable-remove-password
How to remove password from login.
Quote

If you don't want to enter your password every time you sign in, you can create other sign-in options to use with your account, like a picture password or a PIN. If your PC has a fingerprint scanner, you can also sign in with a fingerprint. Solve : Cortana and Search not working after upgrade?

Answer»

Yesterday I had my Tablet PC (Windows 8.1) returned after the upgrade by a technician. I have encountered some issues, some fairly minor, others more significant ---- especially Cortana and Search not working:

1. Cortana does not work. She is said to be unavailable because of the language and region that has been selected. The language is English USA (needed for the keyboard) and the region is UK / GB, surely neither of which should be causing any problems?

2. Search does not work. It generates the error 'class not registered'. I have encountered this error before, so from searching in the past I have seen that this can be caused by a number of different factors, hence it is hard to identify what to do.

I will work on the other issues after these two have been resolved.

I have visited the How To site and found that my situation is commonplace, complicated and worldwide. There are many in a similar situation in the UK. On the one hand it is comforting to know that I am not alone and others have resolved the problems --- eventually. However, on the other hand I note that many of the postings date from July, and FEEL it should not still be continuing to happen now.

If I have understood it, the problems revolve around getting the settings for region / DISPLAY language / speech language configured in a mutually compatible way.

Help would be appreciated! Not sure if this will work for you but my friend had a problem like this go into task MANAGER and look for search or it may be called cortana and then end the task it will restart the search and fix the problem.Hi

I tried that. Cortana (not Search) re-appears in Task Manager after ending the task, but it does not affect the problem. When TRYING to search I get the error 'class not registered'.Cortana crashed at a major rollout demo last week sponsored by MS...just sayin.I got the issues with Cortana / Search sorted it, she is now giving me UK news, weather and local information. Language is set to US English, which is hardly a problem despite it being the 'common language' which divides us.

For a while I was getting 'class not registered' errors with every search via Cortana but (following advice) this was solved by setting my default browser back from Chrome to Edge. (I had been advised to use a different browser to Edge by Norton, on GROUNDS that it does not allow extensions and is not protected.

Solve : Why such different results??

Answer»

Probably a stupid question, but why are we getting such differing results from upgrading to 10? I personally have either done or over SEEN the upgrade of two laptops and had virtually no problems at all after upgrading, yet thus from and others are full of problems people are having with 10. Why is this, the new OS should either work or not, ESPECIALLY after Vista and 8?

Is it just the variety of computer tech out there? Quote

Is it just the variety of computer tech out there?

PRETTY much. Software is deterministic, but how software might interact with other software or hardware is not.

A good example is the software I work on. It goes out to a number of different customers, but bugs will only be reported by certain customers, or some customers might have no problems. This comes down to how they use the software, just as in the case of Windows 10.

This is compounded, as it always has been with any Windows version, when dealing with an upgrade installation, because now pre-existing configurations or issues can compound with the new OS.

Windows 10 is also only the second "major" OS release to be provided through Windows Update (after Windows 8.1), which probably adds it's own special brand of problems. From what I can tell that special brand of problems seems to be uninformative, IMPRECISE errors.
I was also wondering if any particular make or model of pc was causing more problems than others? I have a Packard Bell desktop which I am keen to upgrade but haven't as yet. We also have 3 Asus laptops in the house, one of which has been running 10 fine for a month now, another still on 7 and a third has has recently been upgraded but now has gone into a boot loop and needs resetting.

So are upgrade problem random or can I anticipate probl3ms with the other Asus machines?Expanding from what BC said, software is deterministic. That should mean that if all three Asus machines a re the same , the results should be the same.

Popular Brand Name, in itself, does not determine any kinship of hardware devices. In fact, the makes often make major changes to the products and give them similar model names.

Now if we were TALKING about fine wine made of special grapes, we expect the taste to be almost the same even from different wine makers.
With that as our metaphorical trick.
For computers, you might buy a PC that claims to be a Burgundy, ** but it tastes like Lemon juice.

** Bourgogne is the French name of Burgundy,
one of the 26 regions of France.
So the grape is associated with that area. All Cognacs are Brandy...not all Brandy's are Cognacs. So as i thought really, no two machines are the same, despite being made by the same brand. Bit like people really........

Solve : Restart Loop and "Other User" On Login Screen After System Refresh?

Answer»

Total novice here: I am hoping someone can give me some guidance. My brother-in-law was my computer man and he passed away recently. I may have just messed everything up and I have no one to help.

My notebook, an Acer E1 series running Windows 10 without issue until today, slapped me with a black screen with a cursor and nothing ELSE. (This happened while trying to close out of pretty heavy video game for the first time.) Restarting, the Acer logo came up, but then it went back to the black screen with cursor. Control+alt+delete did nothing. Sticky keys did nothing. I tried all diagnostics in the start screens. Automatic repair did nothing. I searched around and read that I could try running chkdsk and that brought up a lot of bad clusters. After that, I moved past the black screen to the login screen. Now, instead of having my username, it simply said Other User and had a blank login screen with "Sign in to: MYCOMPUTERNAME" below it. When I tried to log in using my username, I get stuck in a reboot loop. I could open in safe mode, but nothing else. I did a system refresh. Nothing changed. I mean, my programs are all gone, but outside of safe mode, it's still acting the same. I get to the login screen, OTHER USER, enter my username and password, hit enter, computer reboots. I just discovered if I don't enter my username, it eventually reboots anyway. Rinse. Repeat. Safe mode still works.

Does anyone have any idea if I can do anything to fix it? I am moving all important files over to a hard drive currently. I would be so grateful for any help. When the"Other User" login comes up have you tried just hitting Enter instead of your User info ? ? It just tells me to enter a username and password.Did the repair ever finish OK ? ?...or is that when the auto re-boot start happening ? ? Quote from: patio on September 11, 2015, 04:29:56 PM
Did the repair ever finish OK ? ?...or is that when the auto re-boot start happening ? ?

The repair finished with no issue, but booted to the login issue. Then the refresh installed normally and went to 100%, but I could never get to that, "Just A Few More Steps" part after login because I can't login and it won't open in Safe Mode.I would try re-doing the Win10 update...i still think it didn't complete properly although you had the 1st successful boot.I will try that again. The same. It loaded to 100% on the loading screen, then loaded to 100% with the circle where it says "You computer will restart several times. Sit back and relax." Then, when complete, it goes to the login screen and it still says "OTHER USER" and asks for a login and password that it won't ACCEPT, then it reboots. In Safe Mode, all of our logins are there with PHOTOS and I can log in.

If all else fails, I can try a RESET that removes everything and then, as a last ditch effort, reset to factory settings, rolling back to Windows 8. I just don't have any other storage big enough to hold all of my crap, so I would lose a great deal. Okay, just in case this helps. I used Run>msconfig and chose Diagnostic startup. It booted, not in Safe Mode, but obviously with limited features. My desktop photo is there now, as well as our usernames and, obviously, doesn't say Safe Mode. Is there some sort of program on startup that's causing this?

ETA more information: Choosing Selective Startup and unchecking Load Startup Items takes me back to the Other User screen which starts the reboot loop. Choosing Selective Startup and unchecking Load system services gets me to the login screen with our pics and usernames, but then it starts the reboot loop.

I have no connection in Safe Mode with Networking, so it's impossible to run any virus scan, as I just did the refresh.

Solve : Windows 10 Update Policy?

Answer»

See, here's the problem with forced updates. Since a recent Windows update a number of folks have lost their icons for Microsoft Edge (I did), have lost the ability to launch Edge, and have had serious issues with the start menu.

The ONLY hesitation I had when updating to W10 was the fact that the user no longer has any control over updates. Given the fact that every once in a while a problematic update will slip through, it would make more sense to allow the user(s) to decide what, when and how to download & install updates. I'm now creating full images of my system drives on a weekly basis and keeping at least the two or THREE most recent versions. I suggest others do the same.Yeah, Microsoft's policy on updates for Windows 10 is really a sore spot with me too.

Your solution is really the only option, it seems, to guard against potential problems that could arise from flawed updates.

It's absolutely ridiculous they took that option away...

Even since the XP days i had it set to notify only.....why ? ?...NIGHTMARE update issues.
I would normally wait almost a Month to install the latest updates as they came to avoid issues.

Sad.Interesting article here: http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/ Excellent ! !

Thanx ALLAN. Maybe random is not the right word. Re the car analogy, recalls are almost always the result of a faulty batch of parts. There is evidence that a particular batch of parts will have an unacceptably high failure rate although only a few parts will fail. However, we are all getting the same software (I think) and our machines were working fine before the update created a problem. Not debating, just curious. And Edge works fine for me too (though I use Firefox as my default browser) - I just lost the icon (which I eventually replaced). But every system is different and some hw/sw configurations do not react well to some updates while others have no problems. Ditto drivers and some software. While MS and other hw manufacturers do their best to write software / drivers that will be compatible with as many configurations as possible, it's not feasible for them to foresee or anticipate all of the various permutations and combinations of software and hardware that we, the users, will throw together. I'm constantly astounded at some of the things users will do with / to their systems and still expect them to work as designed. Just read through forums such as CH - sometimes it's just jaw dropping Quote from: artbuc on August 19, 2015, 12:23:33 PM
Ok, but I did the same updates and Edge works fine. Another example.

One of our products is a software package for managing a Marina. It is software, so it has bugs. When we release a new version to multiple places typically bugs only appear on specific sites. Sometimes only on specific workstations

Why?

Because the bug might require that lineal moorage is being used. Perhaps the bug only manifests if they are using lineal moorage and accepting US tender on a Open reservation from a Customer who was not present on the last End of Month report. The bug might only appear on systems that have flags NOT set to specific settings because somewhere we might have forgotten about the 500+ flag settings we need to check. Maybe a bug is only present if the customer upgraded from a specific earlier version and skipped a version. maybe a report works fine in 5 places, but doesn't show the right account balances at another because that one site uses Open Item rather than Balance Forward style accounting. Or maybe that one place has been customized and is set to use 4-digit accuracy which conflicts with an accidental assumption towards the default 5 digits.

And I doubt our software is more complicated than Windows.

Quote
However, we are all getting the same software

This is not really the case! While many of the same updates GO to most systems, some updates aren't applicable to others or are applicable only to certain systems. For example, Driver updates provided through Windows Update only appear to people with devices that apply, and certain updates may only be available/suggested or classed as Important based on your system configuration. If a bug is discovered in a component that means that, if a given setting is enabled that certain files may be corrupted, then an update is made available to fix that issue, but a separate update may be shown as available only for systems that have that setting enabled which effectively tries to fix the data issues. And that update could itself have issues or maybe the corruption fix causes other problems based on other particulars such as your file system.Thx Allan and BC. They might be a pain, they might seem to be cluttering up your machine but in this day and age i would be worried about running a machine without regular updates of the OS. Back in the XP days i used to be selective with Win Updates and sometimes would stop them altogether. I subsequently had problems when a key update (.Net framework i think) got missed and i had a lot of trouble getting the update and putting things right. After that i always allowed Updates to happen automaticaly, even though sometimes i felt certain updates slowed the PC down for a while. There were updates today for Win10-64bit. Among them is:
• Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB3081455).

A reboot has been scheduled.

Solve : using PIN to sign on to Windows 10?

Answer»

I am still using Insider Preview version of Windows 10; it's actually a version that was released subsequent to the release of Windows 10 to the general public. It is Build 10525. Today, I was prompted to create a PIN to sign on instead of using a password. Have any of you encountered this?

I went ahead and did it. Now, when the Sign-in screen appears, I enter the PIN. It is a quicker way to sign in than with the password I was using. As soon as I type the last digit of the PIN, sign-in HAPPENS; I do not need to hit Enter or click the arrow on the Sign-in screen.

What puzzled me about the screen that prompted me to create a PIN is that it declared that using PIN is more secure than using a password. HMM, how or why is it more secure? It is fewer characters than the password I was using, and this would probably the case with many users.

For a reference on creating a PIN for Windows 10, see Windows 10 – How To Create 4 Digit PIN Logon

Not logical, as Spook would say.
Four digits t have 10,000 permutations from 0000 to 9999.

Passwords are often six or more letters.

Six letters would have from AAAAAA to ZZZZZZ using only capital letters.
Google says there be 308,915,776 possibilities.
what is 26 * 26 * 26 * 26 * 26 * 26
What are we missing here?

Sure a pin isn't as secure as a full password but we are talking about Windows logon here - It's there to protect against people casually trying to get into the PC, if you are determined enough it'll be easy enough to bypass a Windows login password and unless disk encryption is set up, even easier to ACCESS files stored on the system. As far as I'm aware, if you enter the pin wrong 5 times it will lock you out for 30 seconds, so if you factor that in, trying to brute force the pin is totally impractical. It's also possible to set up a total account lockout if required which will prevent an account from logging on if the password/PIN is entered incorrectly n times. If a 4 digit pin is enough to secure my debit card, it's enough to stop someone casually logging onto my PC.

On regular PCS I still use a full password since I find it's quick enough to type sitting at a keyboard (pretty much muscle memory) however I use a pin on my Windows 8.1 tablet (soon to be upgraded to Windows 10) - On a tablet a pin is nice and quick to enter, having to open a keyboard and type a password on an on screen keyboard while pressing different buttons to switch between alphanumeric keys and symbols is a total pain on a tablet.Actually, I used 5 digits for my PIN. The link I posted implies the PIN would only be a 4-digit number. I did not read that article before I created my PIN and I did not assume the PIN would, or must, be a 4-digit number. I do not know what the limit is on the number of digits but knowing it can be longer than 4 digits allows making it more secure than 4 digits. I had the release ver. of 10...now have the full release...neither have prompted me for a PIN logon...Interesting. Solve : Windows 10 Supporting Issue/Error?

Answer»

Hi,
My operating system is Windows 10 Home, it used to be Windows 7, and my PC is 64bit, and my computer is a Gateway.

I just got Windows 10 installed on July 30th, for my PC. Well, just a while ago I have kept getting a error message that says: This Operating System Is Not Supported By This Application. On the left hand top side of the message it says Gateway. I'm assuming it's the title of the error message or maybe it could be referring having something to do with the Gateway PC. For the record I have not at all clicked on any my applications to get this error message. This error message appears on it's own. And this upgrade to Windows 10, was/is compatible with my PC. I have gotten a reservation, in the beginning, then on July 30th, my Windows Update started, downloading, and then installing Windows 10 with no problems. My files are backed up as well.

All in all, hopefully this is a small issue that can be resolved quickly, and easily. I look FORWARD with working with ANYONE here and hearing from anyone here to help resolve this error message. Solve : Windows 10 Restarts Rather than Shuts Down?

Answer»

About 3 weeks ago, shortly after Windows 10 was released, I went thru the Windows 10 upgrade in place procedure on my HP 590t I7 processor desktop machine (which had no problems prior to the upgrade). About 10 days afterward, I believe following installation of a Microsoft rollup update, each time I chose to "shut down" the PC, it began to shutdown (all power lights would GO off, and all activity cease); and after a few seconds would restart. I have searched the internet for solutions and have TRIED all that I could find. For example, I have disabled in BIOS the "wake on LAN" option; I have removed, thoroughly cleaned, and replaced my CMOS battery; I have CHECKED all my Power options and found them to be set correctly. I have always disabled the sleep and hibernate options on computers I use. All these actions have been unsuccessful in correcting the problem. Now, each evening when I shut the computer down until the next day, I'm forced to wait for the computer to shut down, then wait for the inevitable restart, and hold the power button down until the actual shutdown occurs.

If anyone out there has any suggestion(s) as to how I might correct this problem, I would be very happy to receive them. Of course I can furnish any further details determined to be necessary, but I am convinced the problem has no direct RELATIONSHIP to my individual hardware. This was happening to me, it wasn't the same as a true restart, the PC would shutdown and all fans & disks go silent and then after about 1 second it was as if I had pressed the power button. I can't remember exactly what I did, but I think it was one of these:

(1) Registry:

Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Double Click on "PowerdownAfterShutdown"

Then,
Change it to "0" if it is "1" OR
Change it to "1" if it is "0".

(2) Device manager:

Network adapter/your network card...
Right click, properties, power management.
If "allow this device to wake up computer from standby mode" is selected. then unselect it.
Salmon Trout:

Thanks for the response. By the way, your description of the problem you had is a more exact representation of my computer's symptoms than the one I originally furnished. This morning, I tried both of your suggested corrective actions - but no luck. Just in case you recall exactly what you did to fix your problem, please let me know.

Thanks again.Just wanted to say thanks because this solved my issue too. My system that I just took the upgrade from Windows 7 to 10 on a Core 2 Duo E4500 2.2Ghz Dell Inspiron S530 at shutdown with Windows 10 would go black screen and act as if it was off yet the system was still in an on state with fans spinning. I thought I was dealing with a power management driver issue. But the registry fix corrected this that you show here. * For the fact that my symptoms are slightly different there might be something more going on here, but this solved it by flipping the value from 0 to 1. It now completely shuts down and doesnt come back to life on its own etc.

Quote

(1) Registry:

Location: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Double Click on "PowerdownAfterShutdown"

Then,
Change it to "0" if it is "1" OR
Change it to "1" if it is "0".
Does the same thing happen if you shut down from safe mode? For Allan:

Yes, one of the first things I tried was booting into safe mode; again, no success.

Thanks.I also reported this issue to the Microsoft sponsored forum, but received no helpful response. However, I have continued to search daily for a solution. I believe I may have found something which may be helpful to at least try (if you also have this issue). It appears that it may have solved my problem, and I want to make other unfortunate souls aware of it.

Open Device Manager - expand the entry for Keyboard ( my Device Manager lists two identical entries for HID Keyboard Device) - right click on each entry in turn and select Properties - On the resulting screen, select the Power Management tab - uncheck the box adjacent to "Allow this device to wake the computer" - Then click Okay. Again, do this for all entries under Keyboard in Device Manager.

Also under Device Manager, expand the entry for Mice and other pointing devices - Again, my Device Manager lists two identical entries for HID-compliant mouse. Follow the same procedure as LISTED above for the keyboard entries.

For the sake of my sanity, please report back to this forum whether or not this worked for you. I'm so gun-shy now of shutting down my computer, I doubt I will ever again trust the computer to shut down when so instructed, but after testing it five times, it has worked each of those times.

With 10 we SEE many older machines being revived with minimal upgrades, mainly RAM. However, there is a catch. According to many websites the EULA states that Microsoft is going to be and i quote:

"We may collect information about your device and applications and use it for purposes such as determining or improving compatibility” and “use voice INPUT features like speech-to-text, we may collect voice information and use it for purposes such as improving speech processing.”

they also state:

“If you open a file, we may collect information about the file, the application used to open the file, and how long it takes any use [of]it for purposes such as improving performance, or [if you]enter text, we may collect typed characters, we may collect typed characters and use them for purposes such as improving autocomplete and spell check features.”

Like, how does that make end users feel? The fact that windows 10, is free and from what ive used so far fairly a nice system, but its spyware. And by downloading the free update and using it you legally agree to this. You agree to be spied on, your every move watched. Other articles go on about windows 10 ending piracy and whilst watching you they will kill torrented software. I in no way saying that torrented software is acceptable, as i to develop, or used to, but privacy is at stake here.

Read more: http://www.techworm.net/2014/10/microsofts-windows-10-permission-watch-every-move.htmlNone of those quotes are from the Windows 10 License Terms/EULA. Solve : File History not detecting my data drive??

Answer»

Hi everyone,

After a rather painful upgrade to Windows 10, I'm finally running on my NEW operating SYSTEM. Something that shocked me when I was running Windows 8.1 was the fact that file history was not running. I had become so used to being AUTOMATICALLY protected by Windows 7's equivalent that I just assumed windows 8.1 had turned it on. As it would seem, nope. So I enabled it for a network share on my NAS server while I was doing backups, then when that finished I shut down the server.

Now that I'm on Windows 10, I'd like to set the File History destination to my internal data hard drive. For some reason, File History does not list it as a usable drive. In case it may have been a space issue, I cleaned it up so now 200+GB of free space is available. Still no go. I read that creating a folder named "FileHistory" on the drive and sharing it may magically do the trick (??) but not luck there either.

Has anyone run into this problem, and can any solutions be offered? You are right. It does not always work like you want.
Of a number of articles, this one looks good.

File History in Windows 8, 8.1 and 10
Quote

Windows 8/8.1 and 10 File History is a bit like Previous Versions in Windows Vista and 7, but it has to be set up and configured first. I'm not sure how much the article can help me at this point - I'm pretty familiar with setting up File History by now, and I'm fairly certain that my larger HDD (which I refer to as my data drive, sorry if that was confusing) would be available.

Solve : My sisters computer won't start after the update.?

Answer»

So, my younger sister recently updated her Windows 8.1 personal computer to Windows 10. It played like normal, and when it was time for her to go to bed, she turned it off. Pretty normal. Then, this morning, when she tries to turn it on, it won't even show the logo screen. No error report, no screen, just a VOID of a black screen. When we tried to hit the power button, it would work like normal, though the monitor wouldn't turn on. It is a DELL monitor, if that makes a difference. The computer itself is a Gateway Computer. If you need any more information, ask me.

Remember, this is my FIRST post. If it was done incorrectly, inform me.It sounds like the monitor. Can you try another monitor?Windows 10 controls the EXTERNAL monitor. Go to Settings---Display---Multiple displays---Duplicate these displays.Later versions of Windows

MS-DOS, Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 also display a Black Screen of Death when the operating system cannot boot. This is usually due to a missing file. This also happens when the user enables file compression on all files and the operating system compresses. Often the user must reinstall Windows, if the missing file is critical to the boot process. However, more often than not the boot screen will inform the user of the missing file. If the operating system is compressed, it will not be able to boot, even into safe mode. However, booting from another device and uncompressing the files will usually solve the issue.

In late 2009 several new reports of the Black Screen of Death in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 emerged. At first several claims pointed at a Windows Update. It was later recanted by Prevx as an erroneous report. Microsoft reported that no security update was causing the issue, and it may be tied to malicious software, or malware. In other cases, the black screen was replaced with the Blue Screen of Death. The Black Screen of Death may also be caused by certain components of a computer becoming too hot (OVERHEATING).

Early builds of Windows 8 featured a black screen of death, in place of the TRADITIONAL blue screen, that appeared to indicate a Stop error. Solve : Dual Boot Win 7?

Answer»

I completed upgrade from Win 7 to Win 10. So far everything seems to be working great. I have a Macrium image of my C drive with Win 7 on an external HD. Can I create a new partition on my C drive and restore my Win 7 image there? That way I can dual boot to either OS. I have done some research and it appears to be a relatively easy thing to do, even for a computer dummy like myself. Can someone advise me or give me a link to the BEST/easiest way to do this? Thanks.I am a certified computer dummy and I can tell you it is never easy.
Macrium wants to put thing back the way they were.

I have multiple installs, but each install has its own livens or permission. In general, Microsoft does not promote multiple instals of the same license. I own three COAs of Windows 7. So I can have Windows 7 on one machine plus one Windows 10 on another.

However, at the moment, one can still use the Windows 10 Technical Preview, which has a license to use for evaluation for a period of tome. So I also have the Win Ten TR on a machine.

In short, you need a COA for each install with the EXCEPTION of repair or evaluation.

EDIT: Check this link from Microsoft. It explains how to do a dual boot.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/install-multiple-operating-system-multiboot#1TC=windows-7

Quote

If your computer's hard disk has adequate free disk space, you can install a newer version of Windows on a separate partition and keep the earlier version of Windows on your computer. This is CALLED a multiboot or dual-boot configuration. Whenever you start your computer, you can then choose which version of Windows to run. For more information...

Warning
You must install the older operating system first, and then install the more recent operating system. If you don't (for example, if you install Windows Vista on a computer already running Windows 7), you can render your system inoperable. This can happen because earlier versions of Windows don't recognize the startup files used in more recent versions of Windows and can overwrite them.

Thanks Geek. Yes, that is what I concluded after some more reading. As I understand it, my W7 license became my W10 license when I did the free upgrade. I am very happy with 10 so I have lost interest in the dual boot. I am keeping a couple 7 Macrium images just in case, at least for a little while.I think there is an option in Windows 10 to revert back to Windows 7 if you are not happy. But some documentation is needed.
The link below seems to be right.
http://www.howtogeek.com/220723/how-to-uninstall-windows-10-and-downgrade-to-windows-7-or-8.1/
Quote
Don’t like Windows 10? As long as you’ve upgraded within the last month, you can uninstall Windows 10 and downgrade your PC back to its original Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 operating system. You can always upgrade to Windows 10 again later.
Even if it’s been more than a month, you should be able to reinstall the version of Windows that came with your PC using fresh installation media and its product key.
In my case, I keep the documents in a separate place in my backups so that I can restore the documents after a fresh install. Because a clean install with erase the partition.

EDIT: The link above seems to be the best on how to downgrade Widows 10 the right way. It has screen shots that are very helpful.
No need to discuss downgrading now. He said he is happy with Windows 10. Quote from: soybean on August 11, 2015, 10:58:46 AM
No need to discuss downgrading now. He said he is happy with Windows 10.

Right,
I posted the link to answer the original question for the benefit of others. The downgrade feature is an important move made by Microsoft to help people decide. Just knowing that you can downgrade makes the decision to try easier for some. Quote from: artbuc on August 11, 2015, 02:03:42 AM
Thanks Geek. Solve : window 10 wont boot?

Answer»

A friend upgraded his computer from WIN7 to Win 10 and now the computer won't boot up.
The computer is a Packard Bell, intel (r) core (tm) i3 cpu with 4096 mb of memory.
Ive tried using the recovery disc but it always freezes on the 2nd disc between 88% and 90% then ejects the disc with an error message.
Thanks in advance for any helpWhat is the exact error message?Wow DaveLembke. Your question alone solved his problem. You could make a successful career writing one-liner questions which solve people's problems. And your sarcasm really helped him find a solution...Not only that, but Dave asked the right question. If there is an error message we need to know what it is.After Dave asked the question, the thread was marked as Solved by the OP. That is what stew2652 was referring to.
No...he marked it as solved in his original Post...which i thought was strange...I didnt see the checkbox as solved.... I see 0 and assume its still open for discussion. Quote
Where can i get a Magna-Broom 3000 ? ?

This was a broom I made at my last job that my boss got a kick out of. I worked on lots of computer equipment in a grey textured carpet IT office that was like 10 ft by 20ft with a 8ft x 6ft parts closet and common computer case screws etc would fall and good luck finding them on the carpet. I had a tray full of random screws etc and so I would just grab another to complete the job.

Later I would take my broom that had very strong hard drive magnets duck taped to the bottom of the boom and sweep the floor and the screws from like 5 inches away would fly over to the super strong magnets. I then could pick the screws etc off of the duck tapes magnets and add them back to my tray. My boss saw this and said what is that and I joked and said its the Magna-Broom 3000 and he had a good laugh at that. I had to store this magna-broom in a corner away from floppies and drives etc. Added it to my profile here quite a ways ago as a joke although fact of being the inventor of this broom.

Quote
What are the 0's and 1's which Dave is referring to, and how does one tell at which point in time an OP marks a topic as solved?

0's and 1's are referring to how many responses the post got. I look for those who havent gotten help yet and focus on those first to minimize the wait people have for help. 1's are those that either the original poster added info or someone else posted a response that is usually to gain more info if not already solved. Green Check Marks are seen for solved posts.
Quote
You don't need to explain anything Dave. Solve : windows 10 and clean install?

Answer»

Alright. I do not understand how this works.
I have a PC and a mac. Both are running windows 7. The macbook runs Home (dual boot with OSX) and the desktop Pro.

I downloaded the windows 10 media creation tool as i want to have the ISO so i can make a fresh install. Then I ran the upgrade from a usb install media, (made using microsoft's tool) and it went through upgrade process, from what I can tell, as if I was running win7 or 8.1. Now it says I am running Windows 10 Pro. The build is 10240.

How can I tell what edition of windows I am running from my product key?
(Not pro/ home) but Volume Licensing, Retail, OEM, or Insider Preview? Quote from: BC_Programmer
I was under the impression that they would all list "Windows 10 Pro"

What you saw in System changed with build 10240. Insiders who got the update to 10240 from July 15 onward didn't see "Windows 10 Insider Preview" any more. They just saw "Windows 10 Pro".

The point I was trying to make is that there are two ways someone could have an activated Windows 10 build 10240:

1. By having been enrolled in the Insider program, and installing to, or upgrading to, Insider build 10240 on July 15. No need for a qualifying previous OS install. Their builds remain activated after July 29. These people will remain activated and receive updates, along as they remain in the Insider program. if they leave that program, their install will become de-activated and they will need to buy a license. All Insider buids were Pro.

2. By having, on or after July 29, a qualifying previous OS which they either upgrade or replace with a fresh install. These people don't have any obligations, they are perpetually licensed. They will get an appropriate Windows 10 install and license (Home or Pro) depending on the previous OS edition.

Gabe Aul:

"Upcoming changes to Windows 10 Insider Preview builds"

Quote
The crux of it is this:

Do you want to continue as a Windows Insider and keep getting preview builds after 7/29?
Or do you want to upgrade your Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 system that has been getting Windows 10 Insider Preview builds to the 7/29 release and stop being an Insider?

“I want to continue as a Windows Insider!” If you want to continue as a Windows Insider past 7/29 there is nothing you need to do. You’re already opted in and receiving builds in the Fast or Slow ring depending upon your SELECTION. This is prerelease software and is activated with a prerelease key. Each individual build will expire after a time, but you’ll continue to receive new builds so by the time an older prerelease build expires you’ll have received a new one. Since we’re CONTINUING the Windows Insider Program you’ll be able to continue receiving builds and those builds will continue to be activated under the terms of the Windows Insider Program. We provide ISOs for these builds for recovery from any significant problems, but they are still pre-release software. As part of the program we’ll upgrade Insiders to what is for all intents and purposes the same build as what other customers will get on 7/29, but that will be just another build for Insiders, and those who stay in the program will simply get the next build after as well.

“I want to opt out of the Windows Insider Program on 7/29.” If you decide to opt-out of the program and upgrade to the 7/29 build you will be subject to exactly the same terms and conditions that govern the offer that was extended to all Genuine Windows 7 and 8.1 customers. This is not a path to attain a license for Windows XP or Windows Vista systems. If your system upgraded from a Genuine Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 license it will remain activated, but if not, you will be required to roll back to your previous OS version or acquire a new Windows 10 license. If you do not roll back or acquire a new license the build will eventually expire.

http://blogs.windows.com/bloggingwindows/2015/06/19/upcoming-changes-to-windows-10-insider-preview-builds/

Solve : Random restart every few days - Windows 10?

Answer»

Current Specs
CPU: A8-6500 APU (3.5GHz stock, 4.1GHz turbo)
GPU: R7 240 2GB
RAM: 12GB DDR3 1600MHz 1.5V (2x2GB 2x4GB)
PSU: Corsair 450w (CX450M)
HDD: WD 1TB Blue
OS: Windows 10 64-bit
(The computer is a pre-built. Model: HP Pavilion 500-326na. No overclocks.)

The computer randomly restarts sometimes without any warning. This normally happens every 1-3 days. It has happened when under full load and also idle, so I very much doubt that it is a temperature issue. When it happens there is no BSOD, no "restarting" blue screen, no nothing. Just straight up off and on again. In the event viewer, i get the error "Critical Kernel-Power 41 (63)". I've had this issue for a few months now and it's driving me crazy.

(Will provide logs, files and screenshots if needed)

Things I've DONE to try and resolve the issue:

Purchased new PSU - Didn't fix it

Purchased new RAM to replace the old - Didn't fix it

Reinstalled windows - Didn't fix it (Tried 3x times)

Ran multiple system tests and scans such as memtest - All came back clear, no errors.

Ran multiple anti-virus and anti-malware scans - All clear, nothing found.

Cleaned the computer of dust - Didn't fix it, certainly not a heat problem.

Switched Power outlets - Didn't fix it.

Tried the most common "quick fix" solutions I could find - Didn't fix it

Changed windows 10 updating settings to not automatically restart - Didn't fix it.

No joke, I literally can't afford to keep buying random new parts and hoping it fixes the issue. Is there anyway to find out how to fix the issue or to find what exactly is causing the issue?

Any help will be very much appreciated.I would suggest adding a battery backup. And make sure the computer is plugged into the battery backup plug vs just the surge plug. This will completely eliminate the chances that the power to your computer getting interrupted from a short dip in power. This will also protect your computer for short power outages as well as power surges etc. You can get one for around $50.

If the problem continues after this then it could be something with the motherboard or APU.I'm pretty certain that there aren't any issue with the power outlets since every other electronic device I use doesn't have this issue.

Is there anyway to tell if it's the Mobo or CPU for sure? (I've already check the motherboard for faulty / bad looking capacitors, didn't find any)

Are any other devices a PC?

PC's are very sensitive to the slightest fluctuations in power to the home. A friend of mine had an apartment and couldnt figure out why his computer would randomly crash. He too tried different outlet etc. It wasnt until he added a battery backup that the problem was fixed. The issue was his power was shared with another tenant and he didnt know that at first until he realized that the battery backup with click to intervene one day when his neighbor was using the microwave when he left his door to apartment open for a friend and heard the neighbor next door start the microwave oven to make popcorn. He ended up contacting the landlord to check into why both tenants had shared power, it was because it use to be a large house that was bought and converted into an apartment. Landlord SAID your rent covers the electric bill so I never thought to put each person on their own meter. And something along the lines of that he isnt going to rewire the apartments to be on their own power. The good thing is that the battery backup was his solution. It might not be your solution for this or maybe it could be. Its not a bad power protection device to have with every PC to protect your hardware and data.

As far as if its the Motherboard or APU. That would be the same troubleshooting method as what you have already been doing which is replacing components in hope that the problem goes away and when it goes away you then know the cause. Stress testing doesnt make it act up though and thats where it points my troubleshooting skills back to the power to the PC, in which the battery backup will eliminate this if its the problem. If its not the problem you will have protection that you didnt have before. You have already replaced the power supply with a good name brand power supply, so thats eliminated from cause. And all connections on the inside are secure and proper vs intermittent I am assuming. * wiggling a plug with very little force to see if you can get it to crash could be a troubleshooting method for a intermittent connection, but it can also damage hardware. Going to ASSUME this is not the case and its still power related to the PC which is the more probable cause. This is from dictation.
Here is a general method to help anybody determine if the problem is from software or from hardware. The amount of time this method involves may very but expect it can take anywhere from 4 to 12 hours to produce meaningful results.
Locate, borrow or buy a spare hard drive that is compatible with your system. Remove the existing hard drive completely and put this newly acquired spare hard drive in place install an operating system you have at hand and that you BELIEVE to be reliable. Possibly you have at hand an old copy of MS-DOS 6.22 or something like that. A copy of Ubuntu Linux would also do. Install the alternative operating system.
Now then start up some program that will give you some sort of graphical interface or please something that will stay on the screen and give you a visual clue. Not just walk away and leave the computer by itself if your computer customarily reboots in every three hours, you should have your answer by the time FOUR hours has gone. But to be sure, you might even wait overnight.
If you come back later and you see that would have you had on the screen before is gone and the system has rebooted, then you know there is some kind of crooking your hardware that is causing the system to reboot. Otherwise, whatever message you had put on the screen would still be there. Of course, the thing is probably going into sleep mode or hibernate mode, and if so, you can touch a key in the keyboard and the system will come back to life.
This method usually resolves a question of whether not so hardware the software. Basically what we did is just replace the hard drive and the operating system to see if that made a difference in the behavior. Most of the time you'll find that is not the hardware at all, it was something to do with the operating system or some program that is is operating in the background.
End of dictation. I tried leaving the system running at a friends house for a couple days; It still has the problem. So it 100% isn't a power issue.
Also tried a running Linux distribution (Lubuntu to be exact) on another hard drive, again, it didn't fix the issue.

Seeing as I've tested everything else, it's gotta be the motherboard right? Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyNote:...could still be a power issue depending on which PSU you bought...It's not a blue screen issue, BSView comes up with nothing. No logs, no nothing.

The PSU is perfectly fine. Works without issue on other systems + it's only a few weeks old. Quote from: Cloby on January 31, 2018, 09:54:10 AM
It's not a blue screen issue, BSView comes up with nothing. No logs, no nothing.

Okay. Just to be sure, please go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings and UNcheck "automatically restart". Either way, there's no harm in changing that setting.+ 1

One of the dumber default MS settings....i've seen many others. This is from dictation.
Did he say he tried a Linux distribution and it had the exact same behavior? And he even took it to a neighbors house and showed the same exact behavior?
That is very hard to understand. Are there any other indications that something is going wrong? Such as loss of time and date, or extremely slow Internet connection or anything to indicate a major hardware fault.
Here's my best guess. Something has got into the firmware, either a very strange setting, core very improbably some kind of virus in the firmware. The possibility of a virus firmware is almost impossible because people who make viruses find their much easier targets than people's firmware.
Anyway, if it is a firmware issue, the solution would be to greet install new firmware by downloading the firmware update from the manufacture and going through the update process. In very rare cases the firmware becomes unreliable and this is near impossible to troubleshoot with ordinary tools. The only diagnostic is to try flashing the firmware again and see if that changes the behavior.
I am only mentioning this because the things that reported seem to be so unlikely and improbable.
End of dictation.
Quote
"Critical Kernel-Power 41 (63)"

Quote from: Cloby on January 31, 2018, 09:54:10 AM
It's not a blue screen issue, BSView comes up with nothing. Works without issue on other systems + it's only a few weeks old.

This tells us nothing...What Make and Model PSU is it ? ?I've already tried the "uncheck automatically restart", no luck unfortunately.

The power supply is the Corsair CX450M (Like I've already said, it certainly not a power supply or outlet issue). The system starts to randomly freeze now too, causing me to have to switch it off and on again.

"Did he say he tried a Linux distribution and it had the exact same behavior?" - Yes, with a new hard drive too.
"And he even took it to a neighbors house and showed the same exact behavior?" - Yes.

So am I correct that the one thing that has been constant through all your attempts is the motherboard?

Is it possible that you have determined that's the only thing that could still be causing the problem?
