Solve : Blue Screen Upon Windows XP Installation?

Answer»

Hello, I am new to this forum, but need some tech help.
I just built my computer maybe 6 months ago. It is a dual core, 2GB, NVidia graphics card (built in), and much more. I purchased a WD hard drive 160 GB, and that recently crashed on me (getting it replaced).

In the MEANTIME I bought a new WD hard drive called the Raptor (really fast and reliable). I plugged it in using same Sata cables and can't install windows for some reason...

Partitioning goes fine, everything does as it should. When my computer turns off and tries to restart, it hands while the windows icon shows and the loading bar runs across.
Then the screen goes blue and tells me that there could be damage to my computer!

I have read upon here about pressing F6 upon the install for Sata drivers, but I have not seen where to do that. That is about my only thought of why this could be the way it is.

Please help if you can, I would really appreaciate it!!!The F6 prompt comes up very early on in the install process...
Pay attention to the bottom of the screen right after it says setup is starting.
Do you have the MBoard drivers that CONTAIN the SATA/RAID driver ? ? Because it will ask for them.Okay, well I found it just like you described. Now it is telling me
"Setup could not determine the type of one or more mass storage devices installed in your system or you have chosen to manually specify an adapter" CURRENTLY, Setup will LOAD support for the following mass storage device

-none-

To specify additional SCSI adapters, CD-ROM DRIVES, or special disk controllers for use with Windows... Press S

If you do not have any [blah blah blah] press Enter"

So I press S and it is asking me for a CD.
Am I at the right place.
Should I put my MOBO CD in? What should I do if I cannot find my MOBO CD!?Okay, so I found my drivers online. I downloaded them and put them to a disc (just literally extracted the files, and dragged everything to a blank cd and set it to burn).

When I put the CD in (when its asking for the installation cd) it says "please wait" at the bottom and then asks me for the disc again.

Did I burn this disc wrong? What is going on!??
I still get that blue screen that says "A problem has been detected and Windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer"...

Solve : Create user defined directory?

Answer» HELLO,

I have the following case and would like to know if this can be solved using a batch file.

we have a LOT of computer that are mounted into trucks. EVERY now and then i would like to have a backup of the eventlog. But to save the eventlog into a specified directory the user needs to CREATE a directory with the registration number of the truck. Is it possible to have a batch file that can first ask the user wich name the directory needs and after that copy the eventlogs to the map with the name that has just been specified by the user?

Solve : SP3?

Answer»

I am currently USING  SP2 and have avoided downloading SP3 because of the problems I have read about in the forum. EVERY time I turn on my computer I am still offered SP3. Have the bugs now been sorted out? Should I download it? I saw a reference to  SP4 on the internet the other day. If I download SP3 will I then be offered SP4 please - is it worth having?I have SP3 and no problems here.

Also, there is no SP4 for Windows XP. Only Windows 2000 goes up to SP4. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on November 18, 2008, 05:03:05 AM

I have SP3 and no problems here.
Same with me, I think it has WGA, but not sure.No problems with SP3 here either.
I have one PC with SP3 and no problem. I have ANOTHER with it and it ruined my favorite photo editor. And I can not re install the photo program. SP3 did something to the registry That I can not fix. And an uninstall of SP3 did not work either. So, for me it was not an improvement and I can not recommend it at all. Others have had real problems. A update that does harm is of LITTLE VALUE. I can not see how it has helped me in any way.  I did however have an issue of a program not working quite right with IE8 Beta installed (even though everything I had read about it said there were no bugs even though it was a beta), not bad though, it was resolved with removing it.

Solve : Problems with XP after virus removal?

Answer»

Hi all

I have a 2 year old  Acer ASPIRE T180 running Windows XP  MCE edition, SERVICE pack 3.

It took me ages to sort out my pc after a virus infection ( sorry don't know what it was called but it causes no task bar and no desk top icons not EVEN in safe mode)  I'm pretty sure the pc is clean now as I've run extensive scans with various software and it's showing as clean as whistle.

However, it now takes quite a while on boot up to get to the login screen and when I do get the login screen there is only one account name showing and that's mine. When I tried to recreate the two missing user accounts windows tells me the accounts are already there. So how do I get these accounts back?

Also, How would I perform a reinstall of windows when I don't have any system discs? XP media centre came loaded on this pc.

Many thanks If you reinstall windows all of your data and programs will be lost. Do you have a good backup?
If you did not recieve a disk with your computer then it probably has a RECOVERY partition on the hard drive. When you first turn your computer on tap F11 as it boots up. Does that take you into the recovery partition?

Solve : have a computer with winxp?

Answer»

Well, the splash screen says winXP,  but when I boot it up to the icons screen it says drivers not found, for the modem, for the sound, for the video, which is weird, cause I can see the output on my monitor.  If I install XP from scratch, will it take care of the "drivers not found" error.  Im trying to FIX this for a FRIEND so I dont have the exact wording, but the gist off the error is that it cant find some drivers.
Does your friend have the drivers disk?
If you go to the computer manufacturers website they should have drivers available to download.
If you do a clean install you will still probably need the drivers disk.ya i guess ill have to go the computer manufacturers website, but how do I know what hardware is installed.  If I go to device manager, will it list the manufacturer and stuff for each device

ill ask my friend tomorrow if he has the drivers disk.  chances are not, as he bought the computer at a garage sale
DLoad, install and run Everest Home.what is everest home
Let's CLARIFY couple of things.
Did this problem just start?
Is computer operable?
Any errors in Device Manager?
You have at least couple of options to fix the problem, before reinstalling WINDOWS, but you have to answer the above questions, first.Computer is operable but it gives error windows saying drivers missing
device manager has a bunch of yellow exclamation marks

My friend noticed the problems when he bought the computer at a garage sale, so Im pretty sure they were there even before
It's clear now...thanks.
Since it's garage sale computer, I'd definitely start with clean Windows install.
Couple of reasons:
- you don't have any data to save
- who knows what's lurking on that computer
- some drivers issues may get fixedbroni,

cool Ill do that, and hopefully thatll fix some driver issues.  But what of those drivers that it cant find.  Where do I get those from?  I can look in device manager to find out what the devices are that have the exclamation mark, but is that the only way to find out the manufacturer name for each of those devices and then download the drivers from the manufacterers website? Quote

But what of those drivers that it cant find.
Don't worry about it. We'll help you out, but we'll have to see what drivers issues will get fixed by clean install.okay will do, ill post back once i do the install. thanks for helping
No problem Quote from: patio on November 18, 2008, 06:58:14 AM

Solve : External Hard Drive Created XP Problems?

Answer»

USB-attached a WD Passport external hard drive for a brief off-load from my Dell Inspiron 1501 with XP Home. Ever since then, (1) XP Themes will not stay selected, changes to Modified => desktop w/ plain blue background (Control Panel > Display > re-selecting XP Themes restores the screen saver, but only temporarily; (2) in My Computer, cannot open drives (C: or a flash drive) by clicking on drive icon -- instead, must right-click and then select open; (3) one of my flash drives frequently has difficulty closing; (4) installing the balky flash drive in another computer (Dell desktop with XP Pro) has created the same set of glitches there.  It appears as though the Passport did not properly close, for whatever reason, and that has knocked things askew and perpetuated the behavior.  I can live with it -- but any suggestions on how to rectify these glitches would be appreciated.

TIA,
MSWHave you ran antivirus and malware scans on all drives in question? Are you running the Passport software that came with the drive ? ?
There are known issues with it.(1) I did not check the Passport for malware before using it, and I no longer have access to it.  I use AVG Free on my laptop, and it reports my C: drive is clean.
(2) I did not set up any special Passport s/w -- I just plugged the Passport's drive into my laptop's USB port and copied a file to it.

MSW
I have a question, do you use the windows usb disconnect function when you un-attach a drive or just pull the usb plug to disconnect?  I'm just curious Here's one thing you can try...actually 2:
Travel to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager.
Right click all instances of USB roots and hubs and select Remove/Uninstall...you will recieve a warning...ignore it.
When you re-boot Windows will automatically re-install them.
Do this with only the minimum USB devices you need hooked up.

Try the drive again and see if it is properly recognised.

If no joy-joy go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it. Let it run to completion remove the XP CD and re-boot.

Good Luck and let us know...Thanks for the feedback. To reply to the points raised --
(1) I do not just pull out USB devices -- I click the disconnect icon.  But my
gut feeling is that the Passport's close sequence did not complete
properly, for whatever reason, and when I pulled the drive's connection,
things went out of whack.
(2) Un-installing the USB root hubs unfortunately did not cure any of
the symptoms.
(3) Ran Sfc /scannow -- it did not request an XP CD (I"m using OEM-installed
XP Home), appeared from the progress bar to run all the way through to
completion, no diagnostic messages issued.

The balky flash drive is now no longer recognized when plugged in --
previously, it just had trouble closing/stopping once started.  The other
flash drive still works fine.

Plugged a Sandisk Cruzer photo drive into the other, now-similarly-impaired
machine (w/ XP Pro), off-loaded photos, but then the system could not close the drive
afterward.  Ugh!  May also be causing issues with an iPod.  Ugh!

MSWReply to reply:

Both the roots AND hubs should be removed.
I'm suprised sfc did not ask for a CD...this is a first, unless you have the Recovery CONSOLE installed on that machine.
Would this be the front USB ports you are using ? ?
On a lot of big box machines they are notoriously under-powered and can cause these issues.
This is starting to sound more and more like a hardware issue...If thats all there is protecting the system I recommend so more scanning programs you said you USED avg but what?  Try using spybot or avast or something.  Seems like malware issues.Patio wrote:
>Both the roots AND hubs should be removed.<

Device Manager LISTS the following:  (1) Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller, (5) Standard OpenHCD USB Host Controllers, (6) USB Root Hubs.
I removed all the Root Hubs.  Should I have removed the other stuff, too?

>I'm suprised sfc did not ask for a CD...this is a first, unless you have the Recovery Console installed on that machine.<

I don't know what that is -- this is just a standard-config Dell laptop, AFAIK.

>Would this be the front USB ports you are using ? ?<

My laptop has 2 USB ports on the side, 2 in the back.  I used 1 of the side ones.

>On a lot of big box machines they are notoriously under-powered and can cause these issues. This is starting to sound more and more like a hardware issue...<

Except all it took for my other Dell machine (desktop, w/ XP Pro) to start manifesting similar behavior was plugging in the balky (i.e., apparently corrupted) flash drive that
the first (laptop) machine could not close (and now cannot register as a drive).

P.S.  I know EXACTLY when the problem started, so I just tried a System Restore to a point 2 weeks before then.  Result was a "System has not changed" message.
As another poster noted, malware that AVG (which incl. anti-spy, anti-root,
anti-virus, etc.) failed to catch is possible.  Seems to me since display, flash I/O and
volume open/close have gone somewhat funcky, maybe the BIOS has taken a hit?

MSW

Expand the roots and hubs and remove ALL instances of USB.

Clarify "balky" flash drive...is this a flash drive or the WD passport drive ? ?
Try connecting it to a rear port...save your data from it and format it.
WARNING: Formatting will erase all the data so make sure your backups are intact.

P.S. This is not a BIOS issue.>Expand the roots and hubs and remove ALL instances of USB.<

Those 12 items are everything listed under Universal Serial Bus controllers.
None of those 12 nodes is expandable.  I uninstalled the 6 Root Hubs.
Should I also remove the 6 listed as controllers?

>Clarify "balky" flash drive...is this a flash drive or the WD passport drive ? ?

I USB-attached a WD Passport drive to my laptop only long enough to copy a couple of
files to it.  Clicked the disconnect icon...but, even though I waited sufficiently,
I'm not sure I got a definitive message before scratching my head & finally
disconnecting the Passport.  It was immediately after that that I began seeing
weird behavior.  In addition to the obvious screen saver issue, a 4 Gb flash
drive (not the Passport, which I never attached again) would not close after
it had been opened -- i.e., repeated clicking on the disconnect icon always brought
up the following message:  Problem Ejecting USB Mass Storage Device, "The device 'Generic Volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later."  That's what I mean by balky.

Trying the same flash drive in my desktop, I got the same message.  Eventually
shut down the machine to pull the drive, rather than simply
yanking it with the message displaying.  Hopefully safely -- but no such luck.
Now the desktop shows the same behaviors -- and, after plugging a Sandisk Cruzer photo drive into the desktop to put some pix on the hard drive, clicking the
disconnect icon gives the same bleepin' not-stopped message!

Now, the balky flash drive is no longer recognized by the laptop -- it does not register it as a drive when it is plugged in (instead of the usual two-tone recognition, I get 3 of the same tones when it is inserted).  It IS still recognized as a drive when I plug it into
the desktop, and I can access all the files  But, when I try to disconnect it by clicking the icon, I get the same message.  Alternatively, I tried right-clicking the drive icon in My Computer and selecting Eject, and that gave me the message "Removable Disk 'G' is current in use."  Tried to run a disk check on it, but got the message "The disk check could not be performed because the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some Windows files on the disk."

>Try connecting it to a rear port...save your data from it and format it.
WARNING: Formatting will erase all the data so make sure your backups are intact.<

I will try that next -- am currently copy the data to the desktop while it is still being recognized.  (Since the system thinks the bleepin' thing is in use, I decided to actually
use it!!!)  I will post my result.

Thanks for your continued feedback on this.

Score one for Patio and for Squall_01.  Formatting the bad flash drive (suggested by Patio) proved difficult, because the system kept insisting that it was in use and exclusive use of Windows files thereon was required in order to format.  But, after much clicking around, I was able to reformat the bleepin' thing.  This morning, I plugged the freshly formatted drive into the desktop to see if it would be recognized.  Slowly, it was -- slowly enough to where I immediately opened the volume, expecting to see no files.  But there was one:  wa6.vbs.  Googling quickly revealed that it's (as Squall_01 suspected) malware -- a worm, not currently detectable by major anti-virus prgs.  A number of people are reporting similar symptoms to mine, including posts in late Oct. from people who caught it in India (where my brother -- whose WD Passport I BORROWED, lives) and Cambodia (where he traveled last month, shortly before visiting me).  I still have to do the disinfection work, but thanks to everyone who offered me their feedback.

MSW  congratulations on getting it working proper again! But- I WONDER how, after formatting- there were ANY files on the drive.

In any case- it also explains your inability to stop it, since the script was running.

This is one reason why I have autoplay disabled universally. When I plugged in the freshly formatted flash drive, the desktop promptly reinfected it.  The delayed volume recognition + winking drive indicated something (a write) was happening there.  That's why I immediately opened it & took a look and saw wa6.vbs sitting there all by its lonesome self.  Don't know why it wasn't hidden. (I wasn't explictly checking for hidden files and folders, AFAIK.)...Ah, well, I'll accept the break at this point!

Solve : pros and cons?

Answer»

what are the pros and cons of upgrading windows 95 to 98?

Just a quick thought on this one.

Pros: it's three years newer.

Cons: It still sucks.

It depends, though, really. Windows 98, or Windows 98SE? 95a or 95b, or 95OSR2?can you give me like some more in depth details? because this is for class... its pretty much pointlessSince Windows 98 and Windows 98SE (Second Edition) were marketed as separate products, due to the magnitude of changes in 98SE from 98, I think you need to state which you're talking about.  Go with 98SE if that fits your purpose here. yea it is 98SE can you get me a little bit of detail on the pros and the consIs this comparing windows 95 to 98, or are you comparing a 98 upgrade from 95 to a Clean install of 98?

its both clean install and  overinstall comparisons Quote from: Cet123Helpmeplease on November 19, 2008, 08:03:42 AM

yea it is 98SE can you get me a little bit of detail on the pros and the cons
If you edit your post or restate your response in proper grammar, I could probably give you some info.   I have recieved a spreadsheet to do and in the spreadsheet the teacher asked for the pros and cons between 98se and 95 Os's and both the pros and the cons for both clean install and overinstallGOT IT DONE DONT WORRY ABOUT IT ANYMORE ill be back sometime in the futureI'll assume you're also talking about the original Win 95, not Win 95 with the OSR 2.1 upgrade installed.  So, some differences, as derived from a retail box I still have for W98SE:

File system: W95 used FAT16; W98SE could use FAT32, resulting in more efficient use of drive space.

W98SE had better support for digital cameras , scanners, and other devices.

USB support: Little or none in W95; W98SE provided Plug and Play USB support, meaning you could plug USB peripherals into your PC's USB port without rebooting.

W98SE provided better graphics for GAMING SINCE it was built on DirectX 6 technology. and supported MMX technology and AGP for video cards.

W98SE provided better multiple monitor support, allowing you to expand your work or games across multiple monitors.

Internet Connection Sharing: not present in W95; was part of W98SE.

Application launch time: "36% faster" with W98SE.

Windows Update: automated updates were part of W98SE, but not W95.

Windows NetMeeting, which could be used to "see, talk, and work" with family, friends, and colleagues, was part of W98SE, but not W95.

There are probably other differences worth noting; perhaps someone else will post some. Quote from: Cet123Helpmeplease on November 19, 2008, 08:34:05 AM
GOT IT DONE DONT WORRY ABOUT IT ANYMORE ill be back sometime in the future
Now, I see this.     Still a very nice summary, soybean !Come to think of it- I figured out why there is so much repeating of questions. Smart people will use the search functionality, and find an INFORMATIVE post that answers their question- an example of such a post being Soybeans above.

Those too lazy and arrogant to bother using the search feature, or good grammar and spelling, for that matter, often create a new topic-

So the question is- are they going with, or against the grain. OMG. grain. there it is again.... ACK! if you take the word again, swap the first letter for a r and swap it with the g... O.... M.... G...

Solve : win xp pro blue screens on bootup, but safe mode with network works okay?

Answer»

This is an older hp desktop with amd Athlon2200+ cpu, 768mb ram, 80gb hd and the current problem is a blue screen whenever windows tries to start in normal mode which reports no file name,  but the numbers 0x0000007e, and then some more in brackets like 0xc00006, 0x80ga37a9, 0xf7dc266e8, 0xf7d2634e4. Are these memory locations? Do they really mean anything to anybody?  I tried using boot logging, to see if it stopped after loading a certain driver, but after renaming the old boot log, it didn't create a new one, so it SEEMS like it doesn't get far enough to actually start writing a boot log. I have tried using a different graphics card, like the blue screen suggested, but that made no difference, so I went back to the original onboard agp port. I searched my registry for any intelppm reference, but found none. It seems like it should be possible to get this running, since it boots up fine now in safe mode with networking, and I can get online, so I am looking for some help, before I just give up and reload xp, and spend the next 3 weeks reloading software.

Here is the history of the problems: Computer suddenly locked up and wouldn't reboot. I suspected just a corrupt pagefile.sys, but deleting that didn't help. I had a corrupt boot.ini, so I copied an old version.  I booted with a third party cd, ultimate boot cd for windows made with Bart's PE, and restored an older copy of the registry, and after going back a few days, it was able to boot in safe mode, but still wouldn't load normally. I disabled reboot on errors, and found the blue screen actually was reporting c0000218 unknown hard error. I tried using the repair function from the windows cd, but it still wouldn't boot normally, and the install couldn't complete in safe mode, so I restored the old registry again, to get back to safe mode , and now I still had a blue screen, but the error had changed to BAD_POOL_CALLER. I downloaded the standalone service pack files, reinstalled service pack2, still blue screened on boot. Installed service pack 3 in safe mode, reboot reports sp3 is installed, but I still have the blue screen. I have tried using msconfig to try to boot with no system.ini, or boot.ini, but still no luck. I also tried some of the other options, but sometimes lost my safe mode booting, and had to boot from the ubcd and straighten it out again. I ran some disc diags, and there was a corrupted tmp file, and maybe some others, so I ran 3 different defrag programs, just to make sure my drive could be written to okay. I suspect there are some other corrupt windows system files, and I was hoping loading the service packs would help, but it didn't.

Is there any debug mode utility available that will step through the boot process? I remember years ago it was possible to step through a windows 98 boot, and try leaving out certain drivers while it was booting.

One suggestion from ms was to upgrade the system bios, but I don't know the model, since the case has been changed, and the hp detection won't work when the browser is in safe mode. Any ideas on some other utilities I can use to debug my boot-up?

I remember calling ms before, and sometimes they told me I had to reregister dll files, but I think those problems were further down the boot process than this. Anyhow, are there some simple tricks like that, that I can try?Sounds like your in deep...you may have already spent as much time as it takes to install windows new and fresh. I have no answer to your problem but my advice is to go ahead and save any needed files off the drive and make it new again. I keep a hard drive ready, loaded with windows and all needed programs ready for when this HAPPENS as to not lose time when busy.Yeah, but it's not just about the time, it's more the principle of the thing. If it is close to workingm properly, it should just need some fine tuning. If we always reinstall, we never learn anything new, and repeating the same process over and over is tedious. It also bugs me that Microsoft sells PRODUCTS that, it appears to me, need a lot of maintenance and tweaking, to run smoothly, and they charge big money to help support their own products. So, it's partly about beating the system, by finding out how to fix things without following microsoft's suggested method to just start over fresh, and lose years of history and custom settings, etc.0000007e:

0x0000007E: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A system thread generated an exception which the error handler did not catch. There are numerous individual causes for this problem, including hardware incompatibility, a faulty device driver or system service, or some software issues. Check Event Viewer (EventVwr.msc) for additional information.

Quote
0x00000019: BAD_POOL_HEADER
(Click to consult the online MSDN article.)
A pool header issue is a problem with Windows memory allocation. Device driver issues are probably the msot common, but this can have diverse causes including bad sectors or other disk write issues, and problems with some routers. (By theory, RAM problems would be suspect for memory pool issues, but I haven’t been able to confirm this as a cause.)

Seems the errors point in different directions but here's a few things you can check in the meantime:
RAM
DLoad and run MemTest. Follow the directions to create a bootable cd.
Boot to the CD and let it run at least 2 hours...any errors at all and you have a bad stick of RAM

Hard drive
DLoad and run the diagnostics (FREE) from the drive manuf. site...again these are used to create a bootable CD.
Run the long test.

Otherwise it may be a faulty/wrong driver...check in Device Manager to see if there are any yellow !!'s.Thanks for the reply. I'll check out those ms links.

This computer has 2 sticks of ram, so I tried pulling the first out, and booting up with the second stick in the first slot. This should have made a change if one of the sticks was bad, and it didn't make a difference, (except the system ran slower running on less ram.) I also thought of the possibility of a hard drive problem, but if defrag can complete, it can't be too bad, right? It seems unlikely to me that there is an incompatilbilty issue, since the computer has been running unchanged for years, unless a recent automatic update introduced a problem.

I personally BELIEVE I have some damaged files, possibly from previous hard drive problems, so I am looking for ways to confirm my necessary files are okay. Can you help with any of my initial QUESTIONS? Do you know any utilities to help debug a startup sequence? Or does anyone else know some utilities for this?

Solve : Virus? Clock is progressing by one day every second!?

Answer»

I was searching for via hotmail.com to try to find the correct spelling for my friend's last name (in his signature). In the search results I saw that he had sent me a comment on the hi5 network. I don't visit that site often like once a year or so.

I clicked the link to read his comment and had to sign in. I didn't remember the password (I don't think) and after one attempt the site said it was resetting my password and sending me a verification link. When I received the new email I clicked on the link and entered a new password.

I didn't get a CHANCE to do anything but delete a few friend request when I noticed that the TIME on tool bar was changing every minute or so. So, I clicked the time and saw that the date was progressing by 1 day every second!

When I adjusted the day BACK to today's date it just CONTINUED to progress by one day. I went to uncheck the connect with windows internet server option but that didn't change anything. I instantly ran AVG (I had scanned my computer over night and had no viruses).

Anyway, since the computer's date is constantly increasing by one day AVG said the scan had been in progress for 59 days.

What has happened? Is this a virus? If so will AVG be stopped from finding it since the day is constantly increasing?this is like the twilight zone of nightmares...have you checked the BIOS clock?

Have you run a scan for spyware?

Have you tried to go into safe mode and see if it does it?Replace your CMOS battery...about the size of a dime on the MBoard.

Make sure all power is removed and take anti-static precautions...

I have an XP version 2002. It's a Compaq with 2.00 GHz and 192 MB of RAM. It was really screwed up so I did a system recovery to set it back to factory settings. I've done it before and it never has deleted my files and it's not supposed to, but this time it did. My guess is it was a virus. I lost all my music, essays, pictures, and videos. Luckily I had most of it backed up on an external HARD drive but all the pictures and essays I will never see again. Now I have almost nothing on my computer but still I get error messages saying I don't have enough memory to continue on something. I'm convinced my stuff is still on here somewhere, I'd just like to know how I could maybe find it or if it's better to just wipe the hard drive clean.

I have a capacity of 32.59 GB on my C drive and only 1.91 GB left. On my D drive I have a capacity of 4.66 GB and 712 MB left. Again, I have close to nothing saved on my computer so it must be all my hidden stuff taking up the memory,Can you see the missing files if you open the drives with file explorer or my computer and look around at folders and files?"I did a system recovery to set it back to factory settings" = all data, and installed programs are lost
Normal.
Try using http://www.ccleaner.com/ to clear so space, maybe deleting applications you definatly do not want in Add / Remove Programs. Disk Clean-up. Quote from: mayaddw on November 13, 2008, 01:43:32 PM

Are you talking about System Restore? If you did a clean istall, then your hard drive should have way more free space than that.
How did you do this "system recovery"? Did you use your Windows disk or recovery partition on you hard drive? Do you mean that you used the Recovey Console on your XP disk? The fact that your hard drives are nearly full would suggest that your data is still there. Please let US know how you went about the "recovery". Quote

No, I can't. Quote

No, it's not normal because it SAID before I did it that none of my files would be deleted and they were. And I've done it before where no data files were deleted. Quote

I used whatever was on my computer. No disks were required, it was an option on my computer.  It's not like system restore where you can set it back to any previous date, it just sets it back to factory settings but is not supposed to delete your files.

I am going to try to explain this the best I can.......something is seriously wrong with my computer.........lol
when I turn the comp on everything seems to be fine.......but as soon as windows XP starts, a black line ( about 1/2 inch) appears......when I pull up my internet explorer the page is basically split.......below the taskbar is the black space and below the black space is the top line of my internet explorer..............I have tried all the support sites and have not found anyone that has had this problem........I tried pulling the line back up to the top.......which is hard because I have to basically take my cursor up through the top to get to the bottom................confused yet?..............lol   well imagine how I feel....lol....does anyone know how to solve this problem ...desperately need help...Hmmm....Can you perhaps give us a screenshot?I suspect the monitor may be faulty.
It's also possible they are viewing the monitor while hanging upside down, while a monkey holds a CIGAR to create the black line.

Unlikely though. Why does anyone write "lol" at the end of a sentence stating that they have a serious computer problem?
could be your video card thats going out
well because this *censored* comp is driving me insane...guess that is why I "LOL"...better than crying...and I am not sure how I could give you a photo of it ....is there a site that I can check my video card...the comp is only 2 yrs old ...do they usually go out that soonalso....everytime a page comes up it is just a small box...I have to maximize it everytime..not really sure if that makes a difference...but just thought I would throw that out there....why don't you do this one STEP at a time before buying a new video card!

Try another Monitor would be the first step.

Gotta give you that, southernviolet.

As to the photo, you could get somebody with a digital camera or a camera cell phone to take a photo showing the problem and then get a free acount at a picture website like Photobucket and then upload the picture or pictures to there and then you could post an IMAGE link in a message here.

A computer should last more than 2 years.

I just realised we do not know anything at all about this computer, is it a laptop or desktop, what brand, what model, etc.

Solve : File operations causing explorer.exe to hang/crash (XP Pro).?

Answer»

When moving, deleting, and copying files.. about 1 out of 5-10 times explorer.exe will either hang or crash and restart itself.  When it hangs, it's stuck at 100% cpu usage (100% of a core) and I have to kill it.  Or if I wait a while it will kill itself and restart.  It drives me absolutely nuts.

Here's an example what happens:  I'm organizing my files, moving them to another location.  Everything is fine for the first few, then all of the sudden I'll move one and it doesn't DISAPPEAR from the original folder.  If I refresh the folder, it will be gone, but when I check the task manager, explorer.exe will be using up all the cpu.  If I try to do any other file operations after I refresh the folder, explorer will eventually crash after 30 seconds or so.

It has had me a LITTLE worried that maybe my hard drive was going bad.  So I downloaded a hard drive monitoring tool and have been keeping a close eye on it.  Everything seems fine.  I'm thinking it's just something messed up with Windows.

Has anyone ever encountered anything like this?  Any diagnostic tools to recommend?  Something in the BIOS maybe? Any other tips?

4GB, though when I right click My Computer, it says 3.50GB (this is actually the first TIME I've noticed that, could be because I run 32-bit XP?)How long has this been happening?
Have you tried doing a system restore to before the problem started?

I'm not sure if this will help but you could try this:
Go to Start then Run and type in  sfc /scannow

I HAVE RECENTLY DOWNLOADED THE REGGIE CURE IT GIVES YOU A LIST OF THINGS

IS THERE ANY FREE REGISTRY CLEANERS I CAN USE TO FIX THESE ERRORS
DELL COMPUTER  PERSONEL WINDOWS XP PROFESSIONAL 98/OR 2000
NEED HELPBeware !
Registry programs sometimes cause more harm than good.
On top of that you will probably not see a noticeable difference in the machine's performance.

You could DLoad and run CCleaner which comes highly recommended around here.
After that Post back with your system info; symptoms and why you think the registry needs repaired...If you visit some free download sites you can find plenty of free, reliable registry cleaners.  If you have any concerns about safety and reliability, stick with the professional-grade products like Advanced WindowsCare and Glary UTILITIES, which are free for personal use.

Regular registry cleaning is more important than regular defragging, and is essential to the efficiency and good health of your system.  Its value LIES not in reducing the size of the registry - spurious registry entries hardly EVER reach 1% of the total anyway - but in removing useless entries which waste time and resources by directing your system to perform meaningless and possibly even pathological tasks.

For example, you might have been sharing a network printer, which has now been uninstalled.  But there may STILL be entries in your registry relating to the printer drivers.  Since they can't be found, the system will continue searching the network for them until the search protocol times out, which may take a minute or more.  That's a minute more on your boot time, every time you start up.  A good registry cleaner would solve that problem.

Registry cleaning should always be the final step every time you uninstal a piece of software, because nothing else will remove all the registry entries relating to it.

Solve : computer stays stuck at the windows splash screen?

Answer»

Doesnt want to proceed to the desktop screen.  Its running windows xp home, and its a ibm thinkpad LAPTOP

How do I fix it so that it will bootup properly?  I am defragmenting it right now, which is going by real slow.  I want to run an antivirus scan on it next, but if I go into safe mode, the antivirus software doesnt install completely.

so what can i do?Will it boot OK to Safe Mode?Do you have your XP CD?yes it boots okay to safe mode, and  no I don t have my original windows xp cd.  I do have a windows XP CD for a different computer
Did this problem just occur? Any new software, hardware?
Please, describe when, and how it HAPPENED?
Did you try System Restore from Safe Mode?
You can use that CD to try some repairs, but answer the above questions, first.
As long as it's not an OEM (manuf.) CD.broni,

The computer does go into safe mode, but even when I restore it to the earliest restore point the problem still occurs: the machine will not boot up past the splash screen in normal mode.  The first thing I did in safe mode is to defragment, and this was taking an awfully long time, I was at 40% after three hours.  But that didnt seem to do anything.  How do I run a  virus check in safe mode if there is no antivirus already INSTALLED.
Why you don't have any antivirus installed?
Is your Windows firewall on?
Quote

Did this problem just occur? Any new software, hardware?
I tried to reformat the HD so I could start all over from scratch.  But the HD doesnt reformat all the way , it stays stuck at 57%.  Does that mean the HD is bad?
You're trying things without waiting for replies and not providing info that is requested...
This method of troubleshooting NORMALLY leads to a clean install of Windows.okay, is there an antivirus intalled.  No there isnt.  Is the windows firewalll on. yes it is.

How would I know or find out if the drive itself is badhow is windows firewall on when you've rendered it essentially non-bootable via a partial format?bc programmer,

no no , windows firewall was ACTIVE when the non booting prooblem began.  I know it was cause i had activated it before the  problem started.
the problem vector is totally different now- how long did you wait for it to format?about id say four hours, it went fine till 57% and then just stayed there

Solve : The best science experiment ever:?

Answer»

OK, I was thinking: I have an old computer lying around, and a science fair experiment coming around the CORNER. I thought it would be interesting to see the lowest requrements for XP.

The victim:
Pentium I 133MHZ 66FSB
32MB RAM (going to be upgraded to 64MB for installation).
2MB Diamond-something graphics card.
The HDD is upgraded from 2GB to 20GB because of XP space constraints.

Now, the problems:

1. Apparently, the BIOS is so old I cannot boot to a CDROM. Would it be possible to get a bootable diskette to make the CD boot to install XP? I've been searching around with no luck whatsoever... Maybe I'm just not TYPING in the right keywords into Google...

And please, no saying, that ain't gunna work to boot xp! Because if you google it, a guy booted XP on a 7MHZ CPU with 18MB RAM.

Thanks a lot!Do you have a floppy drive? You can create 6 floppy disks to setup XP.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q310994

XP can actually run on 2GB of RAMhard drive space, but, with such limited RAM, and pagefile considerations, it would be quite the task.

Lowest I have ever seen XP run on is 128MB of RAM, 700MHz processor, and then the 2GB HDD of course...

Just keep in mind, it will be slow as HECK. And in the world of science expirements, provide a lot of evidence so people will understand what's happening. Most people won't get it at first. BTW: take pictures for us  ; ) Quote from: Zylstra on November 16, 2008, 11:40:40 PM

XP can actually run on 2GB of RAM

Mine runs fine on 1 GB.

Now, if it's megabytes we're talking about, XP is said to run with some features disabled in 64 MB, but needs 128 MB for full (if slow) functionality.

*cough* DSL Linux is only 50MB and can run fine with just 8MB of RAM... just thought i'd let you know!A WinME boot disk will do fine...grab one from bootdisk, com. Make sure it's the one with CDROM support.

Okay, ran into another problem:

How do I modify the system clock speed to underclock it?

Should I use a software utility? And also, will the clock speed be the same when I restart? (I hope so).

One more thing:
Can I use this utility to underclock the system:
http://www.overclock.net/downloads/255892-setfsb-2-0-a.html
I would actually go with just finding a processor that runs at the speed you would like it to. Moreover, a computer from the 95 or in between 95-98 era...

Sometimes the BIOS has the ability to change clock speed. This is generally the best way, in my opinion. Check out your BIOS. If its not in there, a software overclock is the only other option. Some software applications might not let you underclock so far, since that defeats the purpose of overclockingHmm, my manual said something about SWITCHES on the motherboard...

I'll look into that.

And you're right, the only thing that lowers the CPU in bios is CPU mode during standby... And I don't WANT that. I'll look into software. Could you recommend a couple more?Trust me that CPU is slow enough to impress even your Professor if you get XP running on it...My XP runs fine under:
80 GB RAM HD
256 GB MB RAM Quote from: Ashutosh32 on November 18, 2008, 07:05:23 AM

Solve : Windows does not recognize usb keyboard/mouse after replacing critical files.?

Answer»

I recently had my C:\Windows\System32\Config\System file corrupted, very likely DUE to a bad sector on my HARD drive. I managed to replace it with the backups found in C:\Windows\Repair and Windows boots, but Windows does not recognize the keyboard or mouse now. Both are USB and I can vouch it is not a hardware issue (They work perfectly fine on the second install I'm typing this with), my BIOS also accepts USB and the keyboard works fine before windows boots. I suspect the drivers are corrupt/missing from replacing the 'system' file but I am unable to do anything about it since I can't interact with it once windows boots. The problem persists in SAFE mode, and I am unable to otherwise repair/reinstall windows without reformatting the entire hard drive. Due to a STRANGE problem in which the recovery console corrupts the partition data, causing Windows to believe the partition is an illegitimate form of FAT32 instead of NTFS...

So, my question is how to fix the drivers, since I cannot interact with Windows once it has booted. My second install of Windows is CAPABLE of accessing all of the system files of the first install, and is located on a different hard drive, if this helps at all. Basically this is a last attempt to fix Windows before formatting my hard drive and starting over, data is backed up at least.

Thanks

Solve : Removing Active Desktop?

Any help or advice to resolve this would be much appreciated.

Best wishes - OllieYou have to click two things after the check box. Apply and OK.Dear Geek,

Thanks for the reply

Done this with no effect.

Also TRIED via 'add / remove programmes' as I'd picked up advice that IE should appear as a programme and that there should be an optin to remove AD.

However, it doesnt appear in the listing, so I'm STILL stuck!

Both of these could be the ISSUE here so it's hard to say.what you recomendBuy a real copy of Windows and after formatting it make only one ADMIN account and the others should have user level access. Load a good antivirus and malware PROGRAM.

Use a router with a firewall to get on the web.

Solve : WinDVD & "Program Updates" in Control Panel?

Answer»

Hello,

1)  WinDVD periodically (and without warning) runs its own Windows Installer program updater... which refuses to be "canceled" and (if allowed to run) gives an error that the appropriate "WinDVD.msi" file can't be found.

2)  Installing WinDVD (admittedly, awhile AGO) gave me the "Program Updates" icon in Windows XP Control Panel.  As far as I can tell, it doesnt do a thing except run the WinDVD updater.  It's a continuous frustration and UNNECESSARY.  Is there anyway to remove it?  Is it used for anything?

WinDVD is a GOOD program, I think, but a word to anyone before they install it: it has so many "extra" ways of affecting your computer that it seems like it's more of a headache than anything else.  Intervideo (manufacturer of WinDVD) and Corel (parent company) provide extremely unreliable support.  I've emailed them again today- will post their REPLY (if I get one).

Thanks.

What OS are you using?

Download CCleaner Slim and run the cleaner after each internet session. The hyperlink color change is to let you know you have ALREADY visited that link...it will stay that way for the entire session.

Solve : Just formated?

Answer»

XP HP Pavilion 7950
378 MB RAM
AMD

Just formated and when I boot up I get these errors.  When I format I always have a file or two that would not copy during the process.  (when I say format I mean redong windows XP).  Should I just format again or what do you suggest.

Harry

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]srclient.dll and framedyn.dll ........ HMM these are not files I find familiar right now. (to add - the first is in my system32 folder but not the second)

I guess best might be to START over and clean up and put XP on again - unless others who post think different.  Not sure tho why these files should be problematic if windows originals anyways.

BTW - your RAM amount is pretty marginal as IMO XP WANTS about 250Mb just for itself and so you'll be using a paging file a lot.  With mem prices good these days see if you can add a Gb or more when you get things running - it'll help later.Your optical drive/cd might need a clean and/or your hdd may be failing.

Links to Processlibrary for srclient and framedyn..

Good luck.I wouldent stay with that installation of XP. A few missed files in the XP installation may seem like its fixable now, but who knows what ELSE you are missing.

I would figure out if its a problem with the XP CD, or if you need to replace your drive...

Random data corruption starts at the Installation... This file is USED in the initial install but should be gone after the first re-boot...as others have stated you may have a faulty install of XP.
What type of XP CD is this ? ?Microsoft says.....

Personally- I've only gotten this error with my "felt-pen" edition of Windows XP...

Solve : [Urgent]Microphone Help?

Answer»

Hello, I want my microphone to only output to my speakers and everything else output to my headphones.  It's hard to hear when playing a game.If you use ONE sound card then this ain't gonna work.

The signal path thru the card is COMMON for all inputs even tho volume CONTROL can set up levels and mutes for various inputs - SIGNALS are mixed.  Also the output is the same going to headphone skt as well as line out which you'd usually use to feed your speakers, with their own amp.

I have never tried more than one sound card but unless I am forgetting something - I think you'd need to have another to do what you want.Okay thanks for your help.

Solve : Block file?

I know how you can unblock a blocked file in Windows XP but is there anyway you can re-block them? What are you trying to do?
Which flavor of XP are you using?I'm using Windows XP Home Edition

When you download an .EXE or.bat file from the INTERNET, in the properties BOX of that file it says that it has come from another computer and what not. It also gives you the option to "unblock" it. Is there a way you can re-block or block files already on your computer?

Solve : Problems showing in Device Manager?

Answer»

Hello

I have recently installed Win XP Pro (I have Home installed on another drive in my tower), and notice the following in Device Manager:

http://www11.brinkster.com/stevehigham/audio.html

It seems that some audio drivers are missing, whatever that means. I don't use music applications or hardware at all and cannot be sure what the issues refer to.

Could they relate to the monitor?

How can I correct this, please?

Thanks.

SteveHello

You need to install sound drivers.
Your computer specs please....

ThanksThanks for that Shynnie

Can I not use the same drivers as I use on my other drive for Win XP Home. Aren't they in the drivers.cab folder under the Windows root?

Alternatively, I'll try to get the computer specs and post back - probably later today/tonight.

Thanks again, Shynnie

SteveSometimes XP will pick up on missing drivers when you use Windows update (should check this monthly anyway)

1, GOTO Internet Explorer, click the tools menu and select Windows Update.

2, If you have a sound card installed then this unknown audio device might the onboard device still active in the BIOSHigh if you DLoad install and run Everest Home it will telll us all the components in that machine...

This is what you need drivers for. It's for onboard sound which means the drivers will be on the Driver CD that came with your motherboard...
If you don't have it TRAVEL to ASUS' site and enter your model # and got to the support/download section for your MBoard drivers.
Might as well grab the chipset drivers as well as these should have been re-installed with the new XP also...chipset drivers go FIRST, then sound and network and all others.
They probably have a downloadable version of your Owners Manual...grab that too.http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A7V400-MX&type=map&f_type=4Hello

Many thanks to you both for your help.

I've downloaded this:

SoundMAX Audio Driver version 5.12.01.3663 WHQL but not installed it yet. I thought I'd better check here that this corresponds to this: VIA AC'97 Enhanced Audio Controller.

I'm not sure where to locate, on the ASUS site, the chipset drivers. Do you mean the drivers for the CPU?

Thanks again.

Steve

You can go ahead and try that driver...it won't harm anything if it's the wrong one...
A quick search at ASUS yielded no results on your board...how old is it ? ?http://www.viaarena.com/Driver/via_hyperionpro_v521a.zip

Solve : Should I buy this Laptop???

Answer»

Hi everyone. I need some honest advice so I come here for the best!

I am NOT very technical at all. I basically use my desktop for:

Ebay
Email
Standard Searches for info or reviews on a product
Shopping On the Internet

I am NOT a 'gamer' and really not into listening to music or watching movies on a computer.

I recently saw a comercial for Optimum Online (my cable provider) claiming they have sent WiFi cells all over my area so I thought it may be a good idea to get my first laptop.

I am a single mom with little 'fun' money for myself and an Amazon.com store credit for $120, so I prefer buying a laptop there. (Makes sense, right? )

Ok, here is is...

Acer Aspire One 8.9-inch Mini Laptop (1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB HARD Drive, XP Home, 6 Cell Battery) Sapphire Blue

Model: LU.S050B.133

Here is the page:  http://www.amazon.com/Acer-8-9-inch-Processor-Battery-Sapphire/dp/B001EYV9TM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1226851393&sr=1-1

I CHOSE it for a few reasons:

1- Good Reviews
2 - Low Price
3 - Small / Light Weight
4 - Wifi
5 - Windows XP (Prefered)

Can any notebook pro's out there tell me if I am making a good choice??

I appreciate all of your opinions and help.

Solve : CPU temperature increase tremendously at start.?

Answer»

When I start my PC, not only get a checksum ERROR: defaults loaded but at the same screen you can see the CPU Temp about 40 to 50 degrees. This temperature goes on increasing invariable and at 90+ the system shuts down, of course. I cleaned the PC, checked the RAM, cooled the Processor and also cleaned the fan of the processor. Solution for check sum could be found here. But what about the tremendous increase in temperature like 50, 70, 85, 94 and shutdown. Cannot figure out how to stop that or the cause for it.I can only guess but it sounds like the processor is running at 100% due to the check sum error and is heating up beyond belief..try safe mode and see if it does the same thing....If you have another hard drive, load windows on it and see if it does the same thing...if it doesn't then you know its a problem with windows at least and not hardware.
That's all I can think of, hope it helps.....good luck Quote from: LOSTCOAST on November 14, 2008, 09:59:55 PM

Tried to go into safe mode but it does not cross the screen it shuts at the screen with the motherboard info (the one with black and white written). Then tried to go into CMOS but its also shuts then.reapply new thermal paste.Remove your CMOS BATTERY for a few minutes and then reinsert it. Now, power back up. Leave the case open and look to make sure the fan on top of your heatsink is spinning. If that doesnt do it, then apply new thermal paste. Make sure you scrape all of the old paste off before PUTTING the new stuff on there. An even, paper thin layer is all you need.I removed the battery for sometime and put it again. Still getting CMOS checksum error -Defaults loaded. Temperature just goes on increasing (not yet looked at the thermal paste). I have never before used thermal paste. Any suggestions of brands?

Does the temperature of PC increase so fast without the thermal paste? coz never had such a problem before. Like at the same screen where I get the Checksum error the temperature is SHOWN which is shooting up like 50-75-83-90+ and shutdown. I guess most of you must have understood the problem.Arctic Silver.

Solve : have a BSOD, help???

Answer»

I have quite a few things on my computer, which by the way is a DELL latitude running win XP.  Nowadays, when I turn it on, I see a BSOD, and Im not able to get to the desktop screen.  How do I fix this?
the 1st THING to do is to unhook anything that’s not essential like printers, flash drives etc. and then check all drives for CD's and FLOPPIES and remove them. Then try a boot into safe mode. If that is unsuccessful then you may need to try a recovery with the windows CD.  Insert the CD into the computer and restart it, if your lucky it may boot to the cd and allow you to repair/recover the install of windows. Follow the prompts.  Good Luckrestart your PC and click f8.. and when you see a much of options like, SAFEMODE, safemode with networking, ect.

click on last known configuration and if the BSOD happens again let us know what it is!

Solve : Sound from speakers is slow and scratchy?

Answer»

I have Windows XP and lately when listening to music, videos, ets. the sound is SLOW, scratchy, static and fades in and out.  Please help....If your sound comes from a sound card plugged into a slot in the COMPUTER you may want to find out the maker and model number and go to the makers site and look for a updated DRIVER in the support/downloads area. I'm sure they have instructions in how to install the driver.  I have a feeling it may help the problem. At any RATE its a good 1st step in solving the ISSUE.

Solve : Faulty Internet Connection?

Answer»

Hi,
I'm having a problem with my internet connection, more specifically on my account on my computer.

My problem is that I can go onto some websites, but not others, such as YouTube.com or google.com.

I've tried:
- Emptying my computer and browser's cache.
- Creating a NEW internet connection.
- Restarting my modem.
- Restarting my computer.
- Browsing the internet on DIFFERENT days.
- Different internet browsers.

It's SPOTTY, only working sometimes.  Such as when YouTube was working for me last night but not this morning.

My computer specifications are:
Windows XP Home Edition
AMD Sempron Processor 3000+
256 MB RAM

Any help appreciated.Have you tried running antivirus and malware SCANS ?  I would think about upgrading your ram to at least 1 gig, since ram is so cheap now maybe you can afford 2-4 gig. What protection programs do you have installed ? ?

Solve : How do i delete a partition??

Answer»

Hi there,

I recently had a problem with windows xp and thought i would re-install the windows DISK to fix the problem, worried that it would delete all my photos and files i decided not to re-format and just installed a second copy on the hardrive.
Now I have saved all my information and windows is WORKING properly again i am wanting to delete the first copy of windows instalation but don't know if its possible.
Is there a step-by-step guide possibly for dummies ?

Thanks for your time
Suejust insert the xp cd in the drive and reboot/restart the computer...when it asks do a new install...NEXT it will ask if you want to delete the partition(s)   delete it and make a new partition at this point the rest is easy, follow instructions and the hard drive will be like new with a fresh install of windows.Hi LOSTCOAST,

Thanks for your advice, but i was really hoping i could delete the first instalation of windows and keep the second seeing as this one is working fine but my hardrive is in need of space and getting a little slow.

If all else fails i shall be following your advice.

Note that if you only have one partition on the disk and you delete it you will lose access to absolutely every file on the disk!!!  Deleting only the unwanted windows INSTALLATION requires a bit more care.

You need to backup your critical files (incl photos) before starting to delete system files. If it is working just leave it alone!

Solve : MY Documents Disorganized After HD crash?

Answer»

My HD crashed a couple weeks ago;  the on LINE backup service I had RESTORED them,

but due to My COMPUTER error in Unpacking the backup,
My documents and settings are scattered

between:   Administrator,  Owner,  All Users, Default User, and my name

I am usually good at copy/paste,   drag/drop  and general file management
but this has me overwhelmed.

Can I safely delete some of the above so there is only ONE user?

Suggestions on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated.

Solve : "Windows did not start successfully" Relooping Screen on my XP Desktop?

Answer»

Well basically my problem is recently I've been trying to start up my computer and it keeps looping thought a screen.

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change night have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your filed and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous start up attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Star Windows Normally

Use the Up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.

That's the screen my computers on. So fare I tried clicking safe mode, Last known Good Configuration and Start Windows Normally it just restarts and loops back to this screen.

After this kept re curing I tried to System Recovery but the screen just freezes and nothing happens. For now I'm going to keep this open on System Recovery.

I'm currently using a desktop by HP and I'm running Windows XP

Its a HP Pavilion a1106n
Bump. I hope somone can give me SOEM advice. All my school files were on that desktop D=.sounds like you have a corrupted boot FILE. do you have your os disc?Im sad to say I dont have any of my CDs since my computer was bout about 5 years ago. Back then I was sort of slacker-offish and I forgot to save it being naive I thought nothing would happen. >.<;;

So im not really sure what to do. I've been stuck on the system restore screen for like an hours .

Its stuck at a back ground with a moon and a mountian backfall. Its just that screen saver and nothing else.in the recovery screen is there any option to repair startup?

if not you either need to get your hands on an xp disc which has that repair FUNCTIONALITY or somehow back up your files (we'll come to that if it has to) and recover it

sorry misread your reply. can you perhaps take a picture of the screen your on and post it cause im a bit comfused on what type of recovery you are onWell by system recovery I mean on the start up screen of the computer where you press f10 so your computer gets reset to the way you got it when you first used it.

Im trying to find my cousins XP Disk. But please keep posting other replies. Also I cant post my screen cause my computer doesnt let me get past the loading screen. So I get up to the black screen then the options pop up and it loops to that screen. So I haven't seen my desktop.

and it freezes on that screen?

to be your best bet would be to use the startup repair of an xp disc. thats the standard fix for that type of problem and to be honest i've never had to repair that kinda thing any other way cause ive got loadsa random xp discs lying about. (which i too have lost alot of :-p)

if you have access to another computer with internet there are things you can download and burn to disc which will help. (im not saying where but i think if i give a WINK wink you'll know what i mean hopefully ) :-p

Well I have a laptop Ill guess I'll ask my friends if they have any XP disks or try to burn it off the laptop if it has a burner.you dont have it dual booted with another operating system? (long shot)

To be honest Im not even sure what that means. Im not really that far into technical work on a computer.thats probably a no then sorry. you best bet would be an xp INSTALLATION cd with start up repair thing on it

that will 99 percent likely fix your laptop.

sorry i cant offer a quicker solution

andyWell thanks for you help and its a desktop ._.

Solve : Possibly a Windows issue - lost taskbar, start menu etc?

Answer»

About 2 weeks AGO I had an issue with my comp when it restarted if it was doing too much at once. Then on Monday I was reading a blog on Myspace, the screen froze, explorer crashed and my task bar went tiny (I usually have it 3-high and it went down to 1-high). I restarted my computer and when it came back on my taskbar had completely GONE, which obviously resulted in missing start menu. I cant get internet explorer, windows media player, and most windows FILES working. Also any sounds on websites arent working, looking at the sound thingy (sorry dont know the proper word) it says I have no speakers? Yet I can play itunes with no problems and videos in real player and quick time work fine with sound. I thought I'd lost MSN at first, which being another windows thing I assumed was connected, but I've managed to get that on today.
When I load the computer up the Windows "Welcome" screen shows for ages, then that clears and my desktop wallpaper comes on...and slowly my desktop icons appear (just my computer, my documents, recycle bin and 3 short cuts).
I've tried deleting things thinking maybe it was memory buit its made no difference.
I'm not very clever when it comes to computers, so is there anything simple that I can do?
Oh and its Windows XP. And nearly forgot to say...I cant copy and paste either...?!
Thanks in advance
Debs
xxxFirst step is to try to get the start menu back. Have you tried the windows key on your keyboard? you can also try ctrl ESC keyboard combo to bring it up. Once you can get that, do a system restore. It is under start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools.  If you still can't get to the start menu, try going to C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe.Neither of those things work, and I tried system restore last Wednesday and it didnt make any difference! How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htmThat sounds a bit risky for someone who doesnt really know what their doing! If that is a bit daunting you can try the following:
Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...
Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Let it run to completion and re-boot.Try patio's advice, first.
If it doesn't work, read my link very carefully. You can do it. It's not that complicated. You won't lose any data.

Solve : Is there a Batch File that can reroute shortcut targets??

Answer»

Is it POSSIBLE to run a  batch file that will reroute a mass of shortcuts?  (e.g.  SHORTCUT Target = laurie\stan\HOME\games   to   laurie\stan\HISHOUSE\games  changing \home\ to \hishouse\  )  The shortcuts in question are located in various FOLDERS but are directed to the same root directory.  I want to change the Target path for 100's of shortcuts without doing them individually.
