Solve : windows XP boot problems? |
Answer» Quote I have the memory of an Elephant.....When you come over and I PAY for your 1st round of golf, you'll forget everything I'm just waiting for the plane ticket to arrive in the post... Did you WANT me to drive instead ? ?Cross country drive would be nice, I guess I get to where the REATOGO-X_PE desk top and when I double-click on OTLPE icon, a"Browse For Folder" window opens up. "Choose Windows Directory" and then a list of disks * RAMDisk (B:) * HP_RECOVERY (C:) * Local Disk (H:) All of the one I choose gives following error RunScanner Error Target is not windows 2000 or later When I open up My Computer, drives B & C have total size 64 MB & * GB and free space info about them. Drive H does not list any info for it. This hard drive in computer is around 400 GB. I'm afraid it sounds like a full wipe and clean install is needed... Keep in mind as long as i've been doing this i rarely if ever offer that advice. Slave Drive Tutorial... Done properly the above method should ALLOW you to recover any and all data you need from that machine... Best of Luck.patio may be right, but let me ask you one more question. What is the drive letter, where Windows originally resided?Sorry for delay. Before any problems, the hard drive was "C". Now it is listed as the "H" drive. The restore drive was "D" and now it is listed as "C" drive. Will try the slave drive hook-up to recover data. Thanks for all the help. Reading mine and others post has helped a lot in learning about computers. I looked on internet but have yet to find a way to slave a SATA drive, which mine is. Is there another way to recover, mainly, photo and MS word files from a SATA drive that won't boot up? Instructions are for PATA drive, not SATA drive. There is no Master/Slave for SATA.For a SATA drive to be slave it needs to be on a SATA port above #2... NOTE: On some machines it is odd #'d SATA ports that accomplise this such as 3 or 5... Consult your MBoard manual...Thanks everyone for help. After ruling out all easy options, one fix did work. I was able to find another spare hard SATA drive and install it in computer and use the "Recovery Disks" I made when I first got computer( HP help desk told me these may be bad and I needed to order more from them $). Those formatted the new hard drive. I found the same type of cables were attached to CD drive (port #9)as I needed for a second hard drive hookup. After hooking up the "unbootable" hard drive and restarting computer it ran "CHKDSK" and changed several things and I was able to open up the hard drive and copy all the files. CHKDSK said that it deleted corrupt attribute list entry with type code 128 in file 5768, and about 3 other files. It also Deleted index entry WPDNSE in index $I30 of file 19292. Later it added back stuff to both the index $I30 and file. After these checks I was able to access the "bad" hard drive I needed files from. I re hooked up the "bad" drive and disconnected the new one and everything works now. It took a long while (about 5 min) to load everything after my desktop screen came on. Thanks again for help! |

Solve : Help! re-installing windows w/o disk? |
Answer» MS Windows XP Home SP3, INTEL Celeron, Dell Dimension 2350 Hello, I am having trouble re-installing windows on my desktop. The computer I am using has no CD drive. Therefore, I am trying to use some kind of partition saved on my computer in order to do a long-needed re-installation of the system. But I can't seem to figure out how to do that exactly.. I've TRIED searching for a 'winnt32.exe' and FAILED to find this. Could anyone give any suggestions on what I should look for in order to do this type of re-installation? Thank you. I guess my question would be how you intend to get the Windows files onto the partition without a CD drive.Quote from: quaxo on August 02, 2010, 10:09:58 PM I guess my question would be how you intend to get the Windows files onto the partition without a CD drive. I'm trying to do a PC Restore type thing, but I'm guessing my Dell Dimension doesn't have one, considering it doesn't do anything when I do Ctrl + F11 What happened to CD drive?Quote from: Kodi on August 02, 2010, 10:15:02 PM I'm trying to do a PC Restore type thing, but I'm guessing my Dell Dimension doesn't have one, considering it doesn't do anything when I do Ctrl + F11 Again, that doesn't explain how to get the files from the Windows CD to the partition anyway. Exactly what model of Dell Dimension do you have?Call Dell...they will ship you a replacement CD. |

Solve : Wrong drive letters on Dual Boot System? |
Answer» My 7 year old XP laptop has just received EasyBCD and a new partition with W7. W7 refers to its 20 GB partition as C:\ Perfectly normal...when you boot to an OS it will always show itself as being on C: and the other OS as being on D or another drive letter... NOTE: The drive letter designations are not stored in the registry per se...they are part of the bootloader and system ini info and are created at the time of installation... If you are unable to make these changes from within EasyBCD then i'm afraid you are out of luck and would have to as Allan stated re-install Win7 with the external unplugged....if it asks if you want to install to what it calls F: simply say no and select another drive letter... You should post a screenshot of your configuration from Disk Management...20 seconds can make a world of difference I'm still up 9 to 7 if my memory serves me correctly..... Elephant!I am not an elephant - I have difficulty remembering what I did last week ! ! Here are screen SHOTS from Disc Management of W7 showing what it sees before it ever knew that an external drive existed, and then after the external drive had been connected and W7 had installed a couple of USB bridge drivers etc and been given the reboot it requested. I will follow this post with a longer one showing screen shots from Disc Management of XP, together with further explanations and questions. This will take a little time ! ! ! Please be patient. Regards Alan [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: ALAN_BR on July 28, 2010, 12:23:49 PM I am not an elephant - I have difficulty remembering what I did last week ! !Sorry Alan, that was for patio not you.Allan, no need to apologise - I immediately realised you were taking a friendly poke at Patio and his comment about his memory. Regrettably my memory now gives me the choice of deciding whether to laugh or cry ! ! I choose to laugh. I think I was guilty of premature excitement. I panicked when I saw in XP WINDOWS Explorer that a partition "Windows 7" had taken squatter's rights over drive letter "F" which belongs to the external drive I rarely connect. Taking the screenshots of Disc management it is not so bad after all. Last week is still in a mist of forgetfulness, but I now remember that on SATURDAY I created the 20 GB partition for Oracle VM Virtual Box to accommodate a W7 "installation", and I allocated letter M:\ so XP would still be able to use the drive letters already assigned to the external drive partitions. Regrettably Virtual W7 took 1 minute to actually launch Windows Explorer. Virtual W7 was in a stupor, almost none of the processor cycles did any work for me. When I shut it down it almost shut - then told me there were 16 updates that it would first install and it took me 90 minutes past my bed time waiting. On Monday I gave up on Virtual W7 and purged drive M:\ to give a real W7 a home for a proper installation, and that worked well. INSTANTLY updated and Windows Explorer quite rapid. Then Acronis was installed to create backup images and for that purpose a 15 GB partition was added. That was where I made my mistake. I created the 20 GB partition with Partition Wizard 5.0 running under XP, and I seized the opportunity to give it letter M:\ so that the external drive would still have all the letters previously used. My mistake was that I failed to reboot the system from W7 and into XP to add the 15 GB images partition, in which case I would have allocated letter N:\. Instead I used the Partition Wizard Boot disc which of course gives no opportunity to assign a drive letter. I now realise that W7 did not "steal" letter F:\ - it was XP having one of my "senior moments" and forgetting that F:\ was (at least in my view) supposed to be reserved for the external drive, and when it saw a new 15 GB partition it seized the first letter in the alphabet which appeared to be out of use. A few MONTHS after I bought the external drive it lost everything. I do not know why it died. Fortunately my son told me that drive letters can get lost and Disc Management might fix it so I did not have to post it back to Play.com - He was right. Trying to remember which letters had been assigned to which partition sizes was a challenge to my memory, and once I got it right I modified all the labels to remind me if I every suffered the same fate again. Hence you will see in sshot-174.gif that what were drives J:\ and K:\ are still correct, but disc 1 drives F:\ G:\, and I:\ have all been renamed. N.B. XP uses Acronis v11 which has put 120 GB of images on drive I:\. Acronis is a bit touchy at the best of times, and will not be amused that drive I:\ is now a mere 60 GB with no images ! ! Long story short :- Premature panic; W7 as installed fully compatible with XP, even though Suzanne's IPOD is drive F:\ as seen by W7, whilst XP always has and will call it drive S:\ W7 accepted as Drive K:\ a new 15 GB partition which XP had never seen or allocated a letter to. Now that XP has seen the new 15 GB partition it has accepted it as Drive F:\. W7 seems to work the same since XP called the 15 GB partition F:\, so I sincerely hope that it will be just as tolerant if I now tell XP it should no longer be F:\ but N:\ Please confirm that I should be lucky, or explain what could go wrong. Solve : Letters appear slowly as I type.? |
Answer» Open msconfig and CHOOSE "selective startup" (DISABLE everything from loading) and reboot. Is everything normal? If so, start adding items back one or two at a time, rebooting after each, until the problem recurs. Report back with the name of the offending process.I tried this, but MS Office or my Internet connection would not operate when I did not load everything. So I was unable to test the text. What should I try next? For what it's worth, I keep task manager open, but MINIMIZED all the time. It displays an bar graph representation of CPU useage in what I've always called the SYSTEM tray for years, but apparently it's proper name is the notification area. Anyway it's in the lower right hand corner of the screen. I tried this, but MS Office or my Internet connection would not operate when I did not load everything. So I was unable to test the text. What should I try next?Download Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Uncheck all startup items and reboot. What happens? |

Solve : XP in endless Chkdsk...? |
Answer» Quote from: GLOOPS on August 01, 2010, 05:08:37 AM The only google I know is my 'Home Page' and the maps. I had my computer built from scratch Gloops, I suggest you read this carefully. It may help you in the future, and after reading it, it seems to me, you will have much more KNOWLEDGE than you do at the present time. Google is a search engine. That is a type of web site that lets you search for information about lots and lots of subjects. In fact, just about anything you can THINK of! Especially if it's to do with computers. What you do is this: 1. Type "http://www.google.com" into the address bar at the top of your web browser (the program that you are using to read this) 2. When the site comes up, you will see the word Google and below that an oblong white BOX. 3. Click in that box and type something that you would like to find out about. "Windows recovery console" is an example. 4. Now click the button marked Google Search. 5. Now a page or maybe more than one page of links will come up. 6. Click on some of them and you will probably find what you need to know. Not doing this, that is, asking questions such as... Quote Where on earth is the 'Recovery Console' mate? ...is considered lazy and bad forum manners and will lead to sarcasm and worse being directed at you. "Where on earth" implies that you have been told about something outlandish and obscure which you could not possibly be EXPECTED to know about, and is an implied rebuke. This makes the bad manners worse. That is why you were asked sarcastically if your computer didn't come with Google. I hope this is clear now. http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=What+is+the+recovery+console%3F&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3MOZA_en-GBUS386US388&ie=UTF-8Thanks guys, but I do already know about the search engine, I use it all the time. Just thought this point went without being said, is all! Didn't know that the 'Recovery Consul' was just another name for the 'Command Prompt' (or the old DOS, for us that were in at the very beginning. ) So now I know. (I love this learning curve.) As far as being a target for sarcasm, I just ignore these guys. Generaly speaking, they have a very low I.Q. I have lived a long time and seen them come and go. Sarcasm IS and always will be the very LOWEST form of wit! I haven't missed that you guys are trying to be helpful here and I greatly appreciate that. Many sincere thanks for your FEED back here lads Quote from: GLOOPS on August 01, 2010, 11:44:58 AM Didn't know that the 'Recovery Consul' was just another name for the 'Command Prompt' (or the old DOS, for us that were in at the very beginning. )Quote from: GLOOPS on August 01, 2010, 11:44:58 AM Sarcasm IS and always will be the very LOWEST form of wit! Puns are the very lowest form of wit. Sarcasm is really somewhat similar to irony and by association in some ways, Allegory. Therefore you have just implied that George Orwell is a witless fool. I beseech you to confirm that this is not the case. Quote Generaly speaking, they have a very low I.Q. Define:Irony.... Quote I have lived a long time and seen them come and go.Your age card has been declined. Quote Didn't know that the 'Recovery Consul' was just another name for the 'Command Prompt' (or the old DOS, for us that were in at the very beginning. ) As ST has just clarified, the Recovery Console is nothing at all similar to either the Command Prompt or Pure DOS, except perhaps to a skin deep comparison. ("They both have a C:\>!" falling into that category) Again, the differences are not hard to find with google. |

Solve : Computer Running Slow Only With Windows Explorer? |
Answer» Ever since I installed the software for my Logitech G11 I've been having a lot of problems with my computer. I'm going to point out first, though, that I can't not have the Logitech software and have tried uninstalling it with no success. Anyway! It isn't my internet that is slow, it works fine. The slowness is in only computer files. When I click the start MENU, for example, it takes literally 45 seconds to load, then anytime I move the mouse adds an additional 30 seconds. It takes forever to search through files or to select programs. I don't get it, because once I get SOMETHING like Google Chrome or Ventrilo running they work perfectly - but anything to do with the start menu, my computer, my documents, ECT. is SOOO SLOW. I can't not have the Logitech softwareBecause...? Sounds like defective hardware to me....but to be SURE uninstall/re-install the software 1st...if nothing changes then REPLACE the mouse...I think, it's a keyboard Yer killin me now.....What's that thing called.....? Google? LOOOOOOOOL |

Solve : Windows Explorer window is running each time I log in? |
Answer» Quote from: jason2074 on July 29, 2010, 07:31:37 PM Msconfig was the way out all along... Wrong. MSconfig should only be used as a diagnostic tool... Never as to making permanent system changes...Amen Quote from: patio on July 29, 2010, 08:08:43 PM Wrong. I've always believed this. But I've come to realize this is no longer true. With Windows 9x's msconfig, it would actually MAKE itself startup with the computer and give you a prompt saying you were in "diagnostic" mode. Now, the option buttons presented on the first tab of msconfig don't correspond to any special modes that it forces windows to run in. In fact, they only correspond to what is checked in the other tabs. if there are any unselected items, msconfig says you are in "selective startup" mode. It doesn't matter wether these items were moved by another program or by msconfig itself. the checkboxes beneath them reflect how "selective" it thinks your startup is. the "Normal startup" will be checked if every single item is checked. Diagnostic startup unchecks everything. the option buttons there are merely "shortcuts" to uncheck and check certain items. "So" you say, "how does it allow you to check items off in the startup tab if it deletes them when you uncheck them?" well, quite simple! it makes a record of anything it disables in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig. Therefore, the only reason not to use msconfig to make permanent changes would be if you don't like a few extra bytes being used up. Another point of note: many of the "alternatives" being suggested are not supported on many newer operating systems, specifically, for example, any 64-bit variant. Take the Startup Control Panel: it's entirely unaware of the fact that all it's accesses to the RUN keys are in fact being redirected, via registry redirection, to actually point to values in wow6432node. Of course, this will find all the RUN keys created by 32-bit programs (who, when saving their values were also redirected to wow6432node. However, the "actual" run key will be left entirely unexamined. Do we really want to switch people away from a tool that understands the implications of this redirection and can properly enumerate the appropriate keys, or do we want to continue to make what I now believe are outdated claims about how it works based on the caveats of it's Windows 9x version? So many people say "don't use MSConfig". But can anybody give a good reason ? That's what I was trying to do- find out why we shouldn't be using it, but I couldn't find any reason at all. So, may i know what was the suggested solution to the windows start-up? Please "msconfig" is perfectly safe to check, uncheck startups, however for an average person it IS a dangerous area, because there are many other options there and if not understood correctly and PLAYED with, the computer may end up as not bootable, in a loop, or stuck in safe mode. There are countless of free programs, like Autoruns, Startupcop, QuickStartup and others, where you can play with your startups in safe manor. Thanks a lot, Patio, BC_Programmer, its a worthwhile to learn reading about suggestions, COMMENTS, opinions thru your experiences. I'm learning and I've learned a lot in this FORUM by participating and ACCEPTING mistakes and learning from it. Thanks Mastermind Broni . I actually have a start-up tool and looking at it and comparing with the msconfig start-up tab seems relatively almost the same . Only thing i dont i know is the impact of unchecking a running service from the startup tool with the msconfig startup tab. And to be more clear about the issue of binghamjc is, does your suggestion about unchecking on startup tab cleared his problem?Yes, but what I asked him to do was ONLY for testing purposes. You can't run computer with the above settings for long, because there is no protection. Talking about startups, any non-Microsoft startup is safe to disable, unless you really need it as a startup. One exception - in case of laptop, don't disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.Yes i remember clearly about not disabling keyboard on laptop as you previously posted. And the services for microsoft disabled(Startup) is what you mean by protection, right? No, you don't disable any Microsoft services. By protection, I mean your AV program and a firewall.Ok i understand. Thanks Mastermind Broni. For that I'll treat you for lunch Gotta go... Lunch time. You're very welcome There has been a lot of speculation in this thread about what was and was not the solution to my problem. Here is my take on it. Using msconfig pointed me in the right direction, but it was not the final solution, and as Broni pointed out, it was intended to be a diagnostic tool. From my point of view that is all that I used it for was a diagnostic tool. Furthermore, when I brought the system up in Selective Startup mode there were warnings to that effect, that is not something that I would like to have occur each time I log in. That would be at least as annoying if not more so than the original problem. What it did do was point out that there was something in the startup list that was the source of the problem. The tool that I used to determine what in the startup list was the source of the problem and remove the two HP programs from the startup list was WinPatrol, there may be others that provide similar capabilities, I am not familiar with them. I have been running WinPatrol on both my systems for at least the past 5 years and am familiar with its operation and comfortable using it. Its main functionality is as a system monitor looking for changes to critical system resources and alerting me so that changes do not occur without my knowledge. I chose to use WinPatrol to continue my trouble shooting because using it did not require that I reboot the system, only that I log off and back on to test the effects of removing various programs from the list. In my estimation using msconfig was akin to using a 4 pound sledge hammer to do the job of a tack hammer. So thank you all for your help in finding the solution to this annoyance. You're very welcome BC i'll give you kudos for what you stated... However i will prefer to stay old school on this one... Withe services.msc being available (which should be the suggestion in these cases) and apps like Mike Lin's Startup CPL i see no reason to use msconfig to make permanent changes... Reason being if you change anything in services.msc as opposed to msconfig the system will still boot but provide an error massage and you can recover from that... That is not the case when msconfig is used... Better approach for newbies and i'm stickin to it...Quote from: patio on July 30, 2010, 02:31:28 PM BC i'll give you kudos for what you stated... I agree, I never use msconfig myself for anything whatsoever, and it's certainly not something users should just go through flipping checkboxes seemingly at random to fix an issue, or editing the boot configuration- it's a dangerous program for a curious person to start experimenting with, and I 100% agree, the various other tools (like autoruns, and the startup CPL (on 32-bit systems, anyway) as well as the actual OS functionality to disable/enable services (services.msc), are much much better. What I am arguing against os more the stigma that seems to imply that it's not a preferred choice because of some unsaid detail about how it works, rather then the true reason, which is that the adventurous users are likely to get burned. On the other hand, adventurous users are likely to get themselves into trouble regardless of the program, but at least most of them stick to the "startups" concept rather then having tabs to modify their core boot configuration. At it's core, the real problem is that there was some decision by somebody to add these countless ways that programs can startup automatically. I mean, at least 6 or so registry keys, even more on 64-bit systems, several ini files that are long forgotten but still parsed, task scheduler, and mercy knows what else. A single startup folder would have certainly been sufficient- you want to see your startups, you just open that folder. no hassle with any tools. But no... apparently companies didn't like this. Win 3.1 had pretty much two places- the startup folder and run= and load= lines in win.ini. That was more then enough. But with win95 was released I guess their excitement over the registry overflowed into a number of new "infection vectors" (As far as I'm concerned, aside from a few necessary driver satellite DLL files (very few, I might add) anything that puts itself in there is an infection. (except malware programs, whose function necessitates being there) Nobody asks "how can I get realplayer to start with my system" because nobody wants it to. *censored*, nobody wants realplayer, they usually get it by accident. A PDF reader doesn't need a "boot loader" program that precaches the main executable. How often do people read PDFs, truly? certainly not enough to notice that they can start Adobe Reader over a half second faster if they let this program run in the background. If the people want it, they'll ASK for it. I know the feeling that causes this and I've done the same. "wow this program is great I'm sure people will want X" and I add it, then I go back to that program a few months later and chastise myself for such management-level thinking. |

Solve : computer won't recognize external DVD driver? |
Answer» I purchased a DVD-Rom that said it will work with Windows XP2000 which I have but my computer only has a CD-Rom so I bought an external DVD DRIVER. My computer won't recognize this. On the HP DVD driver box it said that I have to have SP4. The GUYS at Best Buy where I purchased the DVD driver said I could download SP4 from Microsoft's website. I TRIED this and it said the XP only goes up to SP3. I don't know what else to do!There is no such thing as XP2000. You either have Windows XP or Windows 2000. Which is it?I'm sorry. I have Windows XP.Then SP3 is the last service pack.Yes I know I have the latest service package. But why won't my computer recognize this DVD writer? I click on the D drive and there is nothing there. No idea - can't see it from here. Is it hooked up correctly? Is it a usb drive? If so, is it usb 1 or 2? If usb 2, does your system support usb 2?I am using a USB 2.0 port.Did this drive come with an installation CD ? ?Yes it did. I have come to the conclusion that I don't have the correct software for this. I contacted HP Support and they didn't even recognize this model of DVD writer. They were of no help!!!! It's going back to Best Buy tomorrow. Can anyone recommend a DVD writer for Windows XP?You really shouldn't have a problem with any major brand, but I'm a big fan of LaCie products http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10014 |

Solve : WINDOWS XP AND FAT32? |
Answer» I am a beginner but have an old computer .Have Windows XP Home Edition and have found that my FAY32 cannot be defraged because it has only 6% of space left on it. I am afraid to remove any programs to free up the disc space as I don't want to remove anything that may mess up my computer. Thank you but what is SP3? I do not have it. I am on the WINDOWS XP Home Edition. I feel so stupid as I am not well versed in this but do need help on it. Service Pack Three for Windows XP http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/help/learn-how-to-install-windows-xp-service-pack-3-sp3 Where do I find this information on exactly what I have on this computer? I appreciate your patience and help with this. Am an elderly person and trying to find out more about this computer. I really appreciate it. Also am new at these message boards. 1. Click on Start and then Control Panel. 2. Click on the Performance and Maintenance link. Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Simply double-click on the System icon and proceed to Step 4. 3. In the Performance and Maintenance window, click on the System Control Panel icon at the bottom of the window. 4. When the System Properties window opens it should default to the General tab. If not, choose it manually. 5. In the System: area of the General tab you'll find the operating system version and the service pack level. Note: If you don't have any service pack installed, you won't see "Service Pack 0" or "Service Pack None" - there will be no reference to a service pack at all. Thank you. I only have service pack 2 and financially I can't purchase anything new on this computer. Do I need the FAT32 to keep this computer up and running and can I just dlete all THATIS in the recycle bin to possibly restore some of the space on the FAT32? Thank you for your help and I am sorry for so many questions. Just trying to learn.Quote from: onlyme on July 31, 2010, 12:14:11 PM ...I only have service pack 2 and financially I can't purchase anything new on this computer. Thank you for your help and I am sorry for so many questions. Just trying to learn. There is no charge for Service Pack 3; Microsoft no longer supports SP2. Yes, empty the recycle bin. FAT32 has nothing to do with anything you are asking. You can read all about it here: http://ntfs.com/Quote from: Salmon Trout on July 31, 2010, 11:44:49 AM check the obvious places like the recycle bin, temporary internet files, downloads etc. You should be running SP3, and if so you can use Disk CleanupNot having SP3 in no way prevents running Disk Cleanup, which is what you implied. Quote from: soybean on July 31, 2010, 01:13:37 PM Not having SP3 in no way prevents running Disk Cleanup, which is what you implied. Oh, it's just that when I went to this site... http://www.microsoft.com/atwork/maintenance/speed.aspx ... in a paragraph at the top of the article it says: Quote This article discusses how to use the tools available in Windows 7, Vista, and XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) to more efficiently maintain your computer and safeguard your privacy when you're online. However I belatedly remember that Disk Cleanup was SUPPLIED with every version of Windows XP. To see how to use it go to the article I linked to above. I apologise if I created a misleading impression. However: Quote Support for Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) ended on July 13, 2010 So, no more security updates. At any rate i'm suprised that machine even boots up properly... You're gonna have to backup alot of data to CD/DVD before things will get back to normal... |

Solve : Antivirus software? |
Answer» What is currently the best antivirus, spyware, malware, etc..... total package download for my computer??? I need something that doesnt slow everything down too much. Just learning the whole computer thing so excuse the ignorance. There is no best AV, only what you like best. If you are willing to pay for an av there are any number of good choices (my favorite is Kaspersky). If you want a free av the best include Avira, Avast, AVG, etc. MalwareBytes and SUPERANTISPYWARE are the best spyware scanners and I SUGGEST everyone install SpywareBlaster and update it once a week.Hello, Kristina824 |

Solve : Restore file? |
Answer» I'm trying to free up some space on my friend's Hdd which is only 18 gb to begin with. I FOUND a folder marked "Restore" which is 9.72 gb in size on her C drive but when I go into the folder there are only 5 files amount to a total of 448 kb in size. There are no hidden files. The Dell Computer was purchased in 2000 but this folder was added in 2004. She seems to recall someone working on the computer about that time but she doesn't have a clue what he did. My question is: is it safe to delete this folder? If I could do that that would give her almost half of her HDD back. That is probably the Dell Restore PARTITION and not showing the hidden files... |
