Solve : SATA Hard drive master/Slave? |
Answer» Have a SATA hard drive that went bad in desktop, want to use new SATA drive as master and old as slave so I can retrieve data from old drive how do I accomplish this. Have connected nut only shows one harddriveIf the drive cannot be recognized then the chances of file recovery are very slim unless you care to spend BIG dollars on professional assistance. You must post exact status of old HD. If a stand alone booting of HD in CPU is STILL possible or not. To be able to run a DIAGNOSTIC Test. The first point to address is that SATA drives do NOT exercise "master/slave priority pin settings like Ide drives do. They are prioritized by virtue of what sata port you attach them to IE:pot "0","1" etc depending on the number of sata port the computer has AVAILABLE. I am not certain (as i don't use sata very much) but it may be necessary to enter the BIOS to enable the DETECTION of more than one sata drive.Others may wish to comment on that aspect. Here is an article i found for you that explains sata rather well.truenorth Have a SATA hard drive that went bad in desktop, want to use new SATA drive as master and old as slave so I can retrieve data from old drive how do I accomplish this. And therefore when you go to use it, nothing is detected. |

Solve : Problems accessing email links and attachments.? |
Answer» Help please. Cannot open email attachments in Word and nothing happens when I CLICK on links. Attempting to open Word documents just results in encrypted gobbledegook. I think I've probably clicked on something in my ignorance which is now preventing me from opening this stuff. Any ideas?Has this happened with Word files received from multiple senders, or just one? As a test, try sending a message to yourself, with a Word file you created attached to it, and see whether the attachment opens correctly when you receive it back.It would be helpful if we knew what you think you clicked on. Solve : Dell Laptop Screen goes blank at Start Up? |
Answer» I have a Dell Inspiron B130 that all of a sudden started having issues at start up. When I start the the laptop, sometimes, not all the time, the screen will go blank at different times during start up. Sometimes it will do it as the dell screen comes on, sometimes when the Windows Screen comes on. Once it does it, it will stay that way until I shut it down by holding down the power button. I switched out hard drives and it does the same thing. I guess the next step would be the motherboard. Oh boy....Better to sell it for parts; I got a $100 for my Dell that didn't work.OK here is the weird thing. I never really thought about until last night. When I have the laptop plugged in, it seems to boot up just fine. When it is on battery power is when I have the issues. Does not matter if the battery is fully charged or not. Anyway, Im sure I need to replace the motherboard, or just suck it up and buy a new one. If I do buy a new one, I will definately sell this as well as the spare parts. I'd replace the battery if it were me which it isn't... HINT they're not cheap so only you can decide the value factor from where you are sitting... |

Solve : Help for my MSI wind netbook? |
Answer» I recently was urged to update my YAHOO messenger(on my MSI Wind U100 NOTEBOOK)...Indeed the auto popups would not leave me alone until I did so...I attempted and the program did not work...after the updates I couldn't log in to yahoo at all! no mail, no messenger...when u clicked on the icon, it said that a file was missing and it couldn't connect...so I opted to RESTORE my computer to an earlier time. I USED the system restore. It still didn't work so I restored the system to yet another saved point. Then it locked up. nothing..just a frozen screen...So I shut down the computer...now when I try to boot it up, it gets caught in an endless loop. It tells that windows was shut down improperly and to pick an option from the menu...from "start in safe mode" to "last known settings that work"...I have tried them all and the result is the same(except for safemode which gives me a long list of drivers, and then freezes)..an endless loop. I have the recovery disk and an external DRIVE..but when I try to reboot using the disk, I get another endless loop with a frozen screen.. Please Help! when you try to boot in safe mode, what is the name of the last driver that loads before freezing? |

Solve : Finding out what ports are used by what programes???? |
Answer» Hi there guys. Port Forwarding - Generally forwarding is done so the OUTSIDE world can connecthttp://portforward.com/cports.htm BTW, you can buy a brand new Linksys router made by Cisco on eBay for about $25, including postage, inside north America. These are overstock routers made for T-Mobile VOIP, but function perfectly as a standard wireless router. I jeut bought one last week. Using it to watch movies over a Wii. you can watch movies on a Wii? wow I didn't know that and I own one lol The port thing i still don't get. I know that one of the ports is blocked by another programme. I just have NO idea as to how to find out which programme it is so I can change it. Really frustrating. Thanks for your advice on everything though. CraighPorts can be blocked by: A Firewall A resident AV shield A router A Windows background service. Or, you local ISP provider or campus server. Please read over the information provided on the web site I gave in the prior post.Hey man thank you. I didn't see the link. Got it now and working on it. `the problem is that I have a Scientific Atlanta (cisco) modem 2203 and it isn't listed on the help page!!!??? Not sure what to do now? Solve : canot use you tube downloader? |
Answer» I am positive this is from a windows update, but don't know how to fix it. I cannot use my you tube downloader anymore, I just get this (download error http error response 404 not found) I did some research, and understand it is an update, but how do I find a patch for it? I find keep-tube the best as it shows you all available qualities and gives you the option of a lightweight flv file or a better quality mp4. keep-vid does exactly the same. and best of all, you do not need to install any software to your computer nor do you need to add any extensions/add-ons to your browser Yeah, they both work the exact same way.Hello, Marjorie I doubt anyone else is going to respond because depending on the usage of this Youtube-Downloader it could be illegal. So for best sakes i doubt anyone else will help you. If it is not illegal then, i am wrong. No offense intended. Sincerely, KornmonGrimOH for heaven's sake, it is not Illegeal.... There are a lot of you tube downloaders, I just like this one the best. Everyone use it and it and it is FINE. They are coming out with an updated version, so have to wait till they fix the problem with this version..Quote from: KornmonGrim on July 24, 2010, 02:01:04 AM I doubt anyone else is going to respond because depending on the usage of this Youtube-Downloader it could be illegal. So for best sakes i doubt anyone else will help you. If it is not illegal then, i am wrong. You said it yourself. Depending on the usage. And the law in your country. Depending on where you live, it may be either a civil or CRIMINAL offence ("offense" in US-speak) to download, from Youtube, copyright material that has not been placed in the public domain. It is certainly not any kind of offence to download any of the large amount of material that has been placed there deliverately to be viewed or downloaded. The best policy when asking questions about such software is to NOT mention any copyright material specifically. Then everybody is happy. Just think of the moral aspect of taking something that's not yours..does it seem right just because you can? Youtube changes things to protect others work so downloads are harder to do. You can argue that hey people post vids they don't own in violation of copyright but they are also wrong in doing so. This is a simple right and wrong issue...remember the first thing you learned as a kid? Theft can not be justified in any way. (including illegal torrents) Respect others and their property and be a good human.Quote from: lostcoast on July 24, 2010, 05:53:25 PM This is a simple right and wrong issue...remember the first thing you learned as a kid? Rolls eyes. Please spare us the sermon, Mr Preacher. Let's get back to finding a solution or this door will slam shut... patio. Two points. Marjorie, unless I missed it you never said what downloader you are using. The two ones mentioned both work fine. Maybe you need to uninstall it and REINSTALL the one you have now. Second, all videos uploaded to Youtube are automatically copyrighted even if no paper work is ever filed. However, someone who shoots a video of their cat playing in a box is not usually expecting to make any money off it and it will be fine to download. Clips from movies or TV shows are a totally different story. Somewhere in the beginning or end of movies and TV shows they will have language that prohibits copying the video for distribution. Clips like these are illegal to upload, and just as illegal to download. I am going to ignore the posts here that talk about "theft", Illegeal usage" and so on, it is just plain ridiculous. Please if someone posts a legitimate question here, do not give your stupid opinions. If you don't have an answer, then don't post such silly stuff. As to the question of which one I am using, it is just called you tube downloader by altervista.org. I did check their site and they say they are coming out with a newer version and they are aware of problems with this one. I am hoping they can fix this issue as I use it a lot...The vast majority of Youtube clips are fine to download but you might want to read this article before you get too upset. There are a lot of GRAY areas involved. http://news.cnet.com/8301-13739_3-9936833-46.htmlThe viewer should not be held liable, but rather the UPLOADER |

Solve : Unused file extensions? |
Answer» Recently used Ccleaner on friends Windows XP. When it came to the Registry it had a whole lot of "unused file extensions" asking me if I wanted them fixed. Of course I backed everything up into a file on DOCUMENTS and then ran the fix but why wouldn't I just delete unused file extensions. Can someone explain to me what they are and their importance in this instance? I would think backing them up would just add same clutter. There was no "clutter" in the first place. The unused file extensions weren't hurting anything and there was no need to delete them. My suggestion is to not worry about it or anything else the registry cleaning module of ccleaner does.BTW, if you are curious about a file extension and what it's for this is a good source. BTW, if you are curious about a file extension and what it's for this is a good source. This is a great resource, different file extensions are registered by programs or various processes that have run on your computer at one time or another. As Allan said, I wouldn't worry them because they really don't take up space on your drive. If you want a specific explanation of what each file extension that you have on your system actually does on your computer, Windows gives it to you as well. You can find it by going to start > control panel > folder options > then click on the "file types" tab. From there you can click on any registered extension and it gives you details at the bottom, but I wouldn't recommend on changing any settings here, as that is managed by windows very well and it might cause headaches later. Hope this helps.Quote from: wa_94sound on July 24, 2010, 01:42:12 PM This is a great resource, different file extensions are registered by programs or various processes that have run on your computer at one time or another. Quote from: IowaMrs on July 24, 2010, 02:24:58 PM Great input!! Thank you so much for taking the time. I always need a little more when it comes to explanations. Having something to take a look at helps. I took a look. Thank you. Sometimes I just need things spelled out. Think I have a better understanding. Its like these extensions are available with windows just waiting to connect to the right file name. They aren't hurting anything. Sort of like fonts (or not) just out there not taking up space. Available to be used. Probably a little simplistic. But when you are applying a Ccleaner for the first time to the Registry and you don't know what they are, to ask is damage control in my book. (well always asking is damage control in my book LOL) THANKS again WA_94Do not use any registry cleaner - including ccleaner's registry module. They do no good and can sometimes cause problems.Quote from: Allan on July 25, 2010, 04:22:40 AM Do not use any registry cleaner - including ccleaner's registry module. They do no good and can sometimes cause problems. Wow! Interesting. In the 7 months that I have been in computer forums as a beginner not one person has ever said that to me. Usually there is a big PROMOTION EVERYWHERE in order to get the computer running faster. Thanks for the red flag. Duly noted and received. I was going to ask you when you first indicated that is was not a good idea. You saved me the asking. This is off topic but I have found the same difference when I went looking for input on windows auto updates On or off. Some say on, some say off. Sure is a way to confuse a person. Especially this beginner. But that is another topic. Thanks for your input. I'm glad you are willing to heed Allans heads up...i couldn't agree more with his assessment... As to how to handle Windows Updates...here is how i do it. I set it to never auto-update but to send notifications and ask... I then peruse the list copy it to a notepad file and place it on the desktop. Then i usually wait at least 2 to 3 weeks...while doing my Forum work and check at all Forums i volunteer on and see if anyone has any issues related to a specific update...if no issues after 3 weeks i go ahead and install them manually. Beats having the headache of a sour update...it's happened in the past.Quote from: patio on July 25, 2010, 10:39:32 AM I'm glad you are willing to heed Allans heads up...i couldn't agree more with his assessment... Solve : Help with my Dell? |
Answer» Hello yall, got a problem just got a free computer its a dell dimesion 8100 and i have no way of getting the password!!! been trying the ophcrack boot disk but for some reason it doesnt wanna run from the cd drive even when i set the boot method, it wont even read the windows install cd i got i TRIED putting a new cd/dvd rw drive in there but its not loading(and i know it WORKS). the drives spin the cds like its reading but nothing happens. what can i do? can i reformat the hard drive and then try like that but dont even think that would work any help i would appreciate. also tried to put the HDD on my compaq to get password can i install from my compaq and then put the drive back into the dell, i have no idea what to do.Quote can i install from my compaq and then put the drive back into the dell, i have no idea what to do. Yah, just take the drive out of your compaq, put the dell drive in and then boot *******-. If it doesn't work then just put the old drive back in your compaq. Reference removedI tried the ********* on my compaq just to see if it works it all boots and all that but when it runs the password program it just dissapears in like 10 seconds Reference RemovedSo did you put the dell hard drive in first? Do you have a password set on your compaq? Maybe it doesn't work unless you have a password? Did it require you to press a key within a certain number of seconds to launch the password program? I have that CD stored somewhere. I'll try it on my comp when I find it. I don't really think I can help much more at this point. http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS369US309&q=lost+admin+password&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=From the Forum Rules: Quote * If you need or lost your CD-KEY or other authentication key for a software program or game you’ll need to contact the developer of that program. Solve : quick time? |
Answer» I sent a friend some QUICK time files and they will not open. She has Win. XP. Is there something she can download to make it work? She is getting various error messages, but the bottom line, something is missing. She is on dial-up and it takes hours to uninstall quick time and re-install it. She hasn't done that yet because of that. I think you've answered your own question. Quicktime files will not RUN if Quicktime is not installed. If you can convert them to Windows Media files, Windows Media Player will play them.I didn't say it wasn't installed!!!!!! I didn't say it wasn't installed!!!!!!Don't be rude. I read your post the same way Computer Command did - it sounded very much like your friend doesn't want to download and install quicktime. Either the files arrived corrupted or your friend needs to update or reinstall quicktime. Tell her to try to open any other quicktime file to see where the problem lies.I thought I made it clear that I wondered if she had to RE-Install Quick Time. I wonder if that would even make a difference. I also wonder if there are codecs missing, or how would I find that out? I wonder if there are newer versions of Quick Time and MAYBE that is the problem...She may have an older version. I wonder if that would matter.. There's certainly no harm in her installing the latest version of quicktime (she does not have to manually uninstall the old version - the installer will do whatever has to be done).Or you can uninstall quicktime and try out the quicktime alternative. Quicktime alternative allows you to play quicktime files without needing to have quicktime player installed. Quote I also wonder if there are codecs missing, or how would I find that out? I would have the klite codec pack so that you can play almost every major video filetype available. But I understand your friend's on a dialup internet so... maybe you want to figure out what she needs and you bring it over to her computer and install it on your next visit Thanks for both of these suggestions. However she lives a long way from me. I can put the download on a disk and send it to her if I have to.... Quote from: Marjorie on August 03, 2010, 05:41:16 PM Thanks for both of these suggestions. However she lives a long way from me. I can put the download on a disk and send it to her if I have to.... ok, good LUCK with your friend's situation, let us know how it turns out |

Solve : Non-Existing flashdrive still exists?? |
Answer» Yes.Ok. Do you see that drive in Windows Explorer?Yes and yes."OEI-USB CF/SM/SD/MS USB Device" It appears to be a card reader with no card inserted. CompactFlash/SmartMedia/SecureDigital/MemoryStickMost likely. It may be even a card reader in your printer.Quote from: Broni on August 02, 2010, 05:41:17 PM Most likely. It may be even a card reader in your printer. On my printer! That would be why then! But how can I get it to go away when there is no card in it? Because if I detach my printer, I can't print (obviously).Quote how can I get it to go away when there is no card in itYou can't. I have all those ports listed too. BTW, good job by Computer_Commando Quote from: Computer_Commando on August 02, 2010, 04:41:11 PM "OEI-USB CF/SM/SD/MS USB Device"Yeah, I would have never have put CF, SM, SD and MS together and get a card reader.Quote from: Computer_Commando on August 02, 2010, 04:41:11 PM "OEI-USB CF/SM/SD/MS USB Device" I was looking to see if anyone said this. I had someone call me about this same issue a few weeks ago. She had some HP All-in-one printer with a card reader. Good call, CC.Yeah, mine's a Lexmark. Quote from: Helpmeh on August 02, 2010, 07:42:39 PM Yeah, I would have never have put CF, SM, SD and MS together and get a card reader.I use SD cards for data backup & my digital camera uses SD cards. I still have an old digcam that uses CF cards. I have 2 COMPUTERS with internal card readers & an external one for other use. I forgot all about PRINTERS having them; my printer is an old HP LaserJet PARALLEL port with a JetDirect (external PP to 10BaseT converter). The interesting thing about card readers is you do not use the "Safely Remove Hardware" to remove the card or to remove the card reader if it's an external one. If you do, the device goes away and you have to REBOOT the computer or unplug and replug the reader from the mobo USB header. Just remove the card. Many TV's have card readers, too. |

Solve : Can't reinstall windows...? |
Answer» I tried reinstalling windows on my computer it started to do it with no problems and then it just hit loads of problems, i cant get onto the desktop log in screen or anything, i have a windows xp recovery disc but it WONT do anything, does anyone have any ideas please???You need to provide a LOT more details: 0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED Where is this XP CD from ? ?Your post is confusing. You said you reinstalled Windows because of a virus, then you say you "wiped it clean" (we call that formatting), then you say you are using a recovery disc. Are you using an original XPCD or are you using a recovery disc you created? What is this disc? And did you reinstall Windows or not? |
