gday all,

basically whats happened is since this morning out of the blue every time i open firefox or internet explorer on either of my XP logins, it loads a blank page, then on both of them if i try to load any web page, it just closes the browser and says sorry firefox has crashed or internet explorer had a problem and closed, would you LIKE to send an error report.

But if I load Mozilla Firefox (Safe Mode) from the start menu, it works seemingly fine.

So far I have tried malwarebytes, ad-aware, avg, ccleaner and hijack this(log attached) COMBOFIX(log attached scans, and ccleaner REGISTRY check but nothing has changed, both browsers crash straight away every time, and only way to get on net is firefox safe mode.

I've had a look in chatroom but nothing so far seems to have worked.

Any ideas on a course of action and if not, do you guys think it would be ok to just use safe mode from now on when using internet?

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]In the past i experienced this phenomenon often when i had both firefox and IE6 installed as browsers. My 1st solution was to remove firefox and that stopped it. However this forum and many others advise on the preference for firefox so it was a choice i was reluctant to make. Then through the CH forums it was noted that "add ons" to firefox often caused issues. The recommendation was to remove all of them and see what was the result. If the problem ceased then as DESIRED reintroduce the add-ons one at a time until the problem arises again then remove that one and continue reintroducing as desired. That solution worked for me and now both IE 8 and firefox (latest VERSION) are cohabiting without issues. good luck, truenorth

Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup and Recovery Settings and uncheck "automatically restart". If the system continues to reboot, it's a hardware issue. Otherwise, you'll see a blue screen error - post the CONTENTS of that error here.

A friend of mine is having a issue with Windows Sign In when she starts the computer.. it is a laptop with Windows Vista... a friend of hers ESTABLISHED the settings for signing in and she has forgotten the password.. I am researching what I can here to see if there is a way to get around the sign in process to establish NEW settings, etc.. she really doesn't need a password to access as there is no one else around to access her computer...
Would appreciate any suggestions that any of you may have to deal with the issue...

Second question, trying to keep it a simple as possible, found one site that suggested; Starting up computer and before boot window opens, tap F8, then when the window appears use Safe Mode, and then log in (supposedly without needing a password) and then go to START, CONTROL PANEL, User Accounts and do what changing needs to be done (KEEPING it brief..smile).. have done the part from START before but not dealing with the issue of not being able to log into Windows (just changing things) and was using Windows XP, not Vista...will this WORK with the problem my friend has??

I have not tried it and all I can say is that I found this with google. Be careful when using these types of tools. They can harm your computer.

while installing F secure, SYSTEM got shut down automatically, i switched it on and tried again but the same problem occurred again. i have deleted all the temp file and programme files also. but no effect. i dont want to format my system again. please sort out the problem, it will be really helpful.Have you already got an anti-virus software installed?
Maybe you have already got a virus on your machine which is stopping you from installing F-Secure?
You could try an online virus SCANNER to test.
Three of the best are:

Bitdefender http://www.bitdefender.com/scanner/online/free.html
You also should run a SPYWARE scan using something like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here: http://www.malwarebytes.org/

I am missing IMAPI.exe and DLLs. I am trying to burn a CD with WMP. It says connect a burner in WMP. My Windows is a slimmed down version my friend made me a few years ago, of my copy of Windows XP. I have lost my original copy of Win XP i only have the slimmed down CD my friend made me. I dont know why he took out this service. but he did put in, imapi2.dll and imapi2fs.dll and imapi.sys. I dont see IMAPI service running in the services.msci also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drives, i have 2 and both are not shownTravel to Control Panel and check any devices with a yellow ? or !...

DLoad and reinstall those device drivers and re-boot.

NOTE: Don't rely on Windows Update to do so...get them from the manuf. Support site...I am missing a driver for "PCI input device" but i know what that is. my problem is i dont have IMAPI.exe on my PC at all. I am using win XP. Have your XP CD handy as it will ask for it...
Let it run to completion...remove the XP CD and re-boot.

I deleted my user profile and when it asked me i checked the box to KEEP files in windows. I set up a new user profile and I don't know where to find the kept files are. I think you'll find the files will be put on the desktop of the user you were logged in as when you deleted the profile.

MalwareBytes is a fine adjunct to an antivirus program, but it is not a replacement for one. If you want a free program get Avast, Avira or AVG. If you are willing to pay you have a LOT of choice. My personal favorite is Kaspersky Anti Virus. REGARDLESS, get one NOW, install it, update it, and run a FULL SCAN of your system. NOW.

Long story short, I'm needing to copy a SMALL software auditing application to the local partition on about 320 workstations where I work. I have AD admin rights so I was using PStools with a computer list, but for some reason ps tools is acting flaky. I have a Dell Inspiron B130 that all of a sudden started having issues at start up. When I start the the laptop, sometimes, not all the time, the screen will go blank at different times during start up. Sometimes it will do it as the dell screen comes on, sometimes when the Windows Screen comes on. Once it does it, it will stay that way until I shut it down by holding down the power button.

I see that the screen goes blank, I will shut it down before it completely starts up. When I restart it, it will start up and go to the screen that says that the computer did not shut down correctly, and it asks how I want to continue. If I choose, 'Start Windows Normally' it will start up and the screen is fine. Other than the start up, I have had the laptop LEFT idle long enough for the power save to shut down the screen, where it wouldnt come back on. I disabled all of those power options until I see what other options I have to fix it.

I have the experience in computer repair andc I replaced the motherboard in the laptop about a year ago, and have had no problems since. I made sure when I had the problem a few days ago, that all the screen connections were good. They seemed to be fine, so I replaced the keyboard and screen bezel. Does ANYONE have any ideas of what I may try. Of course the laptop is almost 4 years old and out of warranty. It may just come down to new laptop time, but I have enough spare parts to basically rebuild the whole computer....other than the screen.

Doesn't appear to be a satisfactory solution as yet, but it may be worth checking the DLL mentioned in the above thread.

I'd suggest contacting adobe support as this really appears to be a problem with their software which they should be made aware of.

it asks if you want to save changes if you quit without saving. if you save with the default name (Untitled.bmp) and it already exists it will prompt you to overwrite (replace) the existing file.

I recently was urged to update my YAHOO messenger(on my MSI Wind U100 NOTEBOOK)...Indeed the auto popups would not leave me alone until I did so...I attempted and the program did not work...after the updates I couldn't log in to yahoo at all! no mail, no messenger...when u clicked on the icon, it said that a file was missing and it couldn't connect...so I opted to RESTORE my computer to an earlier time. I USED the system restore. It still didn't work so I restored the system to yet another saved point. Then it locked up. nothing..just a frozen screen...So I shut down the computer...now when I try to boot it up, it gets caught in an endless loop. It tells that windows was shut down improperly and to pick an option from the menu...from "start in safe mode" to "last known settings that work"...I have tried them all and the result is the same(except for safemode which gives me a long list of drivers, and then freezes)..an endless loop. I have the recovery disk and an external DRIVE..but when I try to reboot using the disk, I get another endless loop with a frozen screen.. Please Help! when you try to boot in safe mode, what is the name of the last driver that loads before freezing?

When I do a search and just list specific hard drives the search completes (c,f in this instance). However, when I do a search and list "My COMPUTER" from the "Look in" tab I get an ERROR message:

When I click on the "For more information about this error, click here" I get

When I move the mouse around it recognizes things that can be opened(i.e.- hand). hello all, I was wondering if someone could Tell me how to transfer music files from windows xp (my documents ,my music folder) to windows media player 9. thanks PhinsTrainHi PhinsTrain, to play music files like mp3 inside of windows media player 9, you can just USUALLY left click, drag and select the files inside my docs or my music folder with your mouse, right click, and then select "add to Windows Media Player list." This will create an ad hoc playlist after opening up windows media player AUTOMATICALLY for you.

If the music files are not opening with wmp9 but another program, try right clicking the music file, and selecting "open with" and then selecting wmp9 from that menu (you may have to click on "choose program" to see it).

Finally, if you aren't SEEING your music files in the "LIBRARY" tab of windows media player, it may be that windows media player hasn't indexed your my docs or music folder for it's library, which it usually does during installation. My recommendation is to go to File > Add to Library. This will take you through a WIZARD to do that. One more thing, you want to upgrade to version 11 of the player. To do that go to File > Help > Check for Updates.

How do I find out what program is locking this port?

CraighTo my knowledge, all routers let you USE any port. Ade you can configure then to do almost anything you need. Some older routers have a "latency" problem, they are slow to react to some kinds of data streams.

I doubt anyone else is going to respond because depending on the usage of this Youtube-Downloader it could be illegal. So for best sakes i doubt anyone else will help you. If it is not illegal then, i am wrong.

1) If you recently updated any HW drivers, roll back
2) If you did NOT update any drivers, update them now (video, audio) and look for a bios flash
3) Run a diagnostic on the ramDownload BlueScreenView (in Zip file)
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and PASTE it into your next reply.I seem to have solved the Blue Screen problem!
I remembered that I had cleaned the registry ( and removed some KEYS) a few weeks back. Assuming that may be the problem, I removed and reinstalled an old registry that I had save a year or so ago. No BS's now for several days - that's a recent record. Let's hope it stays that WAY!

Patio, No she (I) does not have any discs associated with the machine. She has moved 4 times since the purchase and any she did have are long gone. However i have downloaded the complete manual on her computer so hopefully the description of the MB will be there. I have not read the full manual yet but i have looked at the part dealing with the "RC">This is the part that worries me "Restoring Your Operating System

I do realize we are not using that RC but as i get deeper into my research it appears that DELL is less user friendly to a recovery than other computers.
It has occurred to me as a question. Could this be caused by an error by an incorrect date emanating from the CMOS battery?
Now the $64,000 question what do you think of this to solve the SATA drivers/F6 problem ?

I got to this via a search for the SATA drivers for xp. I am concerned by the reference to "overclocking". However the impression i get is that it will present other choices when it is accessed in the problematic computer. They will work the best...From my research the MB is a CH776.Going to the Dell Support site and inputting that information for the Dell Dimension 8400 results in what i believe are a choice between 2 SATA drivers . Here is the web link for them

Now how it was done. I must state at this point a great deal of experimentation was done (some perhaps a little unorthodox). I will try to tell what i think was relevant to the SUCCESS.
1.I downloaded the 1st of the Dell MB SATA drivers as per my link in the earlier thread (the one patio advised to try 1st). I put it on a cd-rw disc.
2. I inserted and ran the "XP home iso" that Allan had me create.
3.When the option to press F6 for 3rd party drivers came up i selected F6.
4.This created an insurmountable problem within the ISO program in that the only option EVER AVAILABLE was to insert a floppy into drive "A" (which as stated is unavailable on that computer). There NEVER was an option to "point" it anywhere else. Thought i was sxxxxxd.
5.Remembered from an earlier issue with one of my own computers (Sony Vaio desktop xp pro) that was caused by what turned out to be an incompatibility between that computer and the Paragon Backup SOFTWARE (determined by their TECH support) that they had me create 2 discs.
a) Paragon Backup and recovery
b)Paragon WinPer CD
6.I first tried the B/U & Recovery--no help
7.Then i tried the WinPer CD. It lead me to a point (experimented with many avenues ) where i was able to direct a "driver" installation from a chosen existing optical drive.
8. Inserted the Dell SATA driver disc. Stated successfull install.
9.Restarted the computer with all discs removed from drives.
10. Successfully booted into Xp Home.
11.Called daughter for user password.
12.Full access.

i have this TOSHIBA SATELLITE A305 laptop and when i turn it on i get a BLACK screen.and says there is no operating.so here is what i did and no luck....

i got a windows xp untouched from here burn slow and put on dvd drive and nothing happens.
i restart the laptop
changed the bios settings to BOOT dvd first and turn off some stuff
and change back to defult setting in bios
i even bought a NEW hard drive and same thing
downloaded hdd regenerator and read the disk so its no the dvd drive

any ideas that can help me with this problem?If you were not sure if its a HD that's causing your laptop to behave like that then its an ill adviced moved. But having to afford to buy one must made you think that consulting first maybe in the computer shop where you bought your HD is the best move concerning your laptop problem. Which means there MIGHT be no HD problem in the first place. And having to pay for the repair service might come cheaper than buying a HD.

I recently installed XP on a computer I recently aquired from a friend. Every time I install XP, I have trouble getting it connected to the internet, the solution seems to be DIFFERENT every time. There is an ethernet connector on the motherboard which I am using. The ASUS website doesn't seem to have anything on my motherboard, the ID is P5LD2-MQ.

Recently used Ccleaner on friends Windows XP. When it came to the Registry it had a whole lot of "unused file extensions" asking me if I wanted them fixed. Of course I backed everything up into a file on DOCUMENTS and then ran the fix but why wouldn't I just delete unused file extensions. Can someone explain to me what they are and their importance in this instance? I would think backing them up would just add same clutter. There was no "clutter" in the first place. The unused file extensions weren't hurting anything and there was no need to delete them. My suggestion is to not worry about it or anything else the registry cleaning module of ccleaner does.BTW, if you are curious about a file extension and what it's for this is a good source.

This is a great resource, different file extensions are registered by programs or various processes that have run on your computer at one time or another. As Allan said, I wouldn't worry them because they really don't take up space on your drive. If you want a specific explanation of what each file extension that you have on your system actually does on your computer, Windows gives it to you as well. You can find it by going to start > control panel > folder options > then click on the "file types" tab. From there you can click on any registered extension and it gives you details at the bottom, but I wouldn't recommend on changing any settings here, as that is managed by windows very well and it might cause headaches later. Hope this helps.

Do not use any registry cleaner - including ccleaner's registry module. They do no good and can sometimes cause problems.

As to how to handle Windows Updates...here is how i do it.
I set it to never auto-update but to send notifications and ask...

I then peruse the list copy it to a notepad file and place it on the desktop.
Then i usually wait at least 2 to 3 weeks...while doing my Forum work and check at all Forums i volunteer on and see if anyone has any issues related to a specific update...if no issues after 3 weeks i go ahead and install them manually.

Beats having the headache of a sour update...it's happened in the past.

This is more of a global Windows Question, does anyone know of a WAY to limit the bandwidth used when sending a file from one system to ANOTHER?

This is a work RELATED question or at least I'm asking because of a work problem.

One of our servers RECEIVES some very large files and this causes the 12M circuit to max out causing other problem in other places as devices or users fight for the bandwidth that isn't there. At one point I thought there might be a DIFFERENCE between an FTP and an XCOPY protocol but it appears that regardless Windows will still use the full bandwidth that is available.

My computer is a compaq presario 2100. the operating system is Windows XP with SP2. Recently bought a HP USB Floppy Drive and when I CONNECTED it I could not boot up. I disconnected it and it booted uo normal. I then connected the FD hot and everything seems normal. The computer recognizes the drive and requests that a DISC be inserted. allseems to work normal. if I shut down I cannot boot with he drive connected but if I disconnect it then I can boot up and reconnect it. Is there anything I can do so I can leave the drive connected all time and be able to boot up without disconnecting the drive? thank you for any info.First make sure there isn't a floppy in the drive when you are trying to boot.
Second you may need to go into your BIOS before windows starts and change the boot ORDER so that it doesn't try to boot from floppy.
If that doesn't work try disabling Legacy USB Support in your BIOS.
If you don't know your way around your BIOS please let us know and don't change anything else.I really don't know my way around my bios. I know what they are but have never attempted to change them or even look at them. I would need very detailed instruction to change them. perhaps i had better just leave things the way they are and continue to connect the drive hot when i need to use it. Ok...I will try to explain this as well as I can...I have a spreadsheet that has columns with dates in them. When you look at the spreadsheet, all you see is the date. However, the person who created the spreadsheet also ENTERED TIMES in the cells, but you only see the time when you CLICK on each individual cell. How do I get rid of that? I WANT to see only the date when I look at the spreadsheet AND when I click on each individual cell. My format for these cells is the first option under FORMAT CELLS, NUMBER (tab), DATE. PLEASE HELP!!!Insert a new column to the left (or right) of your dates
in that new column use the TRUNC function to remove the time

For example if your date/times are in A1, then in B1 put =TRUNC(A1)

Copy that forumla all the way down that row

Hightlight the new column you just made with all the forumlas

Choose Edit..Copy

Insert a new column (eg: 'C')
Move to the first cell in the new column

Choose Edit..Paste Special
Under the Paste Special Options choose 'Values' (The default SAYS 'all')
Hit okay.

Format the new Column 'C' as type Format Cells (Date)

If it worked correctly you will now have 3 columns

First column is the orginal column and contains the dates and the times
Second column is the column with all the formulas
Third column contains dates without any times

If desired delete the first and second columns, note that once deleted, you will be unable to see the times anymore in that file, as you have removed the time portion of the data from the file permenantly.

Okay, so one day i TRIED to shut off my computer by starting up the task manager, but then it wouldn't pop up so i decided to shut it down by clicking start blah blah shut down. Then later that night i decided to turn on my computer again, but then it suddenly froze at the Windows XP logo screen where the blue bar moves. It froze when the the blue bar stopped. Then, I manually shut it down and when it restarts it gives me the options "Safe Mode" blah blah blah, but i can only boot on "Safe Mode With Networking". I have tried "Last Known Good Configuration" but it still freezes at the logo screen. HELP!!!!! Please!!!

Until you tell US what changes you may have made in task manager instead of blah blah blah...it will be difficult to diagnose...
At this point it's sheer guesswork.i made no changes. SORRY i am a complete noob when it comes to COMPUTERS. i might just end up paying an expert to fix itWhat OS ? ?

When i click the WINDOWS SEARCH page from the Start menu, NOTHING HAPPENS. The page does not open. Bummer...

I have installed original software from CD seems to LOAD ok but when I try to use scanner window pops up saying "scanning page 1" then window pops up saying "FAIL LOAD ". What could be the proplem. I recently INSTALLED the program NIRCMD and have been using it to standby and unknowingly hibernate my comp. I noticed that after using this software my CPU fan would turn off during standby. When I would resume from standby my comp would sometimes FREEZE and BSOD. I FELT the CPU heatsink after standby and it was boiling hot.

I think that this program is the culprit, but I'm not sure. I think somehow my standby mode was changed, but my BIOS doesn't have any POWER options. I have tried power options in windows also with no luck. Can any one tell me how I can change these modes so that my CPU doesn't overheat during standby?This might be a silly question, but why not just use the Windows hibernate/sleep modes?
Your CPU fan should turn off in standby, but it sounds like your CPU is still working which isn't right.

Trying to reformat a buddies COMPUTER. He's running windows xp and for some reason i can't stop it before windows loads. I put in the windows install disc but i can't seem to boot from the disc either..

Most common ones are F10 F12 or Delete...
Once you get into the BIOS you need to select the primary boot device and SET the CD drive at 1st......remember after setting it as 1st boot priority to press F10 to save changes and Exit...
Then you sould be good to go...it wasn't listed on the bottom of the screen, i found something that told me i could enter bios by hitting f2 even if it didn't show up.

anyway i made the cd the first bootable device, the screen still didn't show that message that says to hit F2 or F? to run from a disc. This thing is LIKE a pentium 3 it's pretty old. Could it be one of those old computers that just won't boot from a disc? Then it might not show right?

It will not ask you to press F2 to boot from CD, however to enter BIOS SETUP you need to press either F2 or F12 depending on the model.
Make sure you have got Bootable OS CD to install operating system. Follow the below MENTIONED steps:
1). Turn on your computer and press F2 or F12 (Depending on the model) to enter BIOS SETUP and set First Boot from CD/DVD.
2). Insert the Bootable OS CD and restart your computer.
3). Wait till it asks you to "PRESS ANY KEY TO BOOT FROM CD" and hit "ENTER"
4). Let the computer boot from CD and follow the set up screen.

Hope this works

If a clean install did not cure the issue it's most CERTAINLY a goner.

i got this new DELL dimension 8100 and the only WAY i get in is as a LIMITED account. this computer is mine so i am trying to do a fresh install, the problem is i cant install new windows OS. FIRST it wont boot from cd drive, neither did my live cd and when i try to run it from the computer it says i need to be an administrator. I dont care about any of the files as this a a freebie computer just wanna do fresh install. But everything i do does not work. Ok so i have a xp COMPUTER that will start up and display the blue boot screen then a black screen about how it did not shut down right and stuff so this is where it happens. i select any one of the options and it reboots.repeat repeat repeat...p.s. it is xp PRO on a hp computer made in 2005. i havent edited or changed any hardware and stuff? what do i do? Hello. I have a SERIOUS issue that I PRAY AND HOPE someone can HELP ME, PLEASE!!!

I am going to cut to the chase and tell you in detail what is happening now and not what lead up to this issue now. I am not looking for a reason (so I felt out the details on how and what lead up to this issue), I am looking for a way out of this to get my system back up and working again. I would like a reason, but I will consider that a separate thread sometime.

When I boot/start into my Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 with SP3, I get a message long before the WIndows XP splash screen is visible. At normal startup, I get a message that states,

BOOTMGR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart


I have installed some time ago Windows Recovery Console as a separate installation of Windows that used to show prior to the Windows XP splash screen appearing. Now, I do not get that option or any options. Actually, I used to get a choice between Windows Recovery Console and Windows XP prior to Windows XP starting. By default, the Windows XP was always highlighted to automatically and normally startup Windows XP. Now, after my BIOS finishes loading I get that message I just stated above since this issue started.

I DO have the Windows XP CD-ROM. Now, I set the BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM to run the CD-ROM at boot and I press any key to start Windows XP Setup. After a minute or two of copying the drivers, I get to the options menu in Windows Setup. All I have for options is:

1. To setup Windows XP...
2. To create a partition...
3. To delete a selected partition...

I do not have any Windows Recovery (Console) options here.

Am I missing something on how to get to Windows Recovery Console by chance?

I have MADE copies of MS-DOS Start Disks (6 of them on floppy disks). I set BIOS to start with them and inserted disk number 1. Well, after the BIOS splash screen has stopped loading I get this message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

So there you have it. Is there any hopes for me to get back into my Windows XP from where I stand now?

I serious feel I need to get into the Windows Recovery Console to do some system serious repairs with my CD-ROM. Any way I can from where I stand or not?

Sorry to tell you but SP3 does not play well with media center addition. I know from personal experience. Try going to setup Xp from there. You can try to reinstall on top or along side of previous windows if you need to backup data. Best bet is probably to wipe out the partition and start from scratch. If you continue to use Media Center Edition stay with SP2, just install all other updates.

Good LuckIf you have Windows XP CD...

1. Insert the Windows XP Bootable CD into CD-Rom drive
2. Click on Start > Run
3. Type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
4. A Windows Setup Dialog will appear press Yes to confirm the installation.
5. Restart your computer after installation, and the next time you restart your computer you will see Microsoft Windows Recovery Console in the startup boot menu.


If you don't have Windows XP CD...

1. Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
2. Download, and install FREE Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
3. Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
4. The above will create bootable Recovery Console CD.

Well, I have discovered after hours of testing and figuring this thing out step-by-step, it was the hard drive that is now failing that caused this issue from the gecko.

This is what I did:

I proceed with a diagnostic check first with the hard drive that Windows XP is on. I have a Western Digital Caviar Blue SATA hard drive with 500GB space and a 16 MB Cache.

I used Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic Tools. I downloaded and installed it on my Windows 7 that is on another hard drive. Windows 7's hard drive and Window XP's hard drive are both on separate hard drives on the same computer. I was able to run this program on Windows 7 to check the hard drive that Windows XP is on. This is what I found:

1. Initially I found using some "SMART Status" it stated that it "PASSED" with a green checkmark next to it. This is like a quick scan that is performed from the beginning. That is all well in good.

2. Now, I performed a "Extended Test" using this same program. It took under 2 hours to complete. The result stated, "Test found bad sectors that may be repairable." There is a "Repair" button on the window. When I click on "Repair", I get the message, "Error was detected while repairing bad sectors." All I have for options is "OK". I click on "OK", and I get a message stating, "Please contact WD technical support for help". I get back to the main menu of this program and I click on, "View Test Result". Here are the stats it gives:

Test Option: EXTENDED TEST
Model Number: WDC WD50000AAKS-00A7B2
Firmware Number: 01.03B01
Capacity: 500.11 GB
SMART Status: PASS
Test Result: FAIL
Test Error Code: 08 - Error detected while repairing bad sectors.

Therefore I can conclude that the WD hard drive is failing.

Any experts on this issue with hard drives? Is this issue completely and utterly impossible now to repair with my Windows XP? ...any other possibilities? Verdict?

EDIT2: (after restart) It's still there...and it's also still in the registry...so I deleted it again...Do you see that drive in Windows Explorer?

Most likely. It may be even a card reader in your printer.

how can I get it to go away when there is no card in it

Yeah, I would have never have put CF, SM, SD and MS together and get a card reader.

All of a SUDDEN I started computer and a disk check came up FAT32. After that the next screen said that a recent HARDWARE or software change had occured. I've tried everything and have seen a long list of windows\system32\drivers, but the computer keeps going back to system check each time. Can't get out of it. I tried reinstalling windows on my computer it started to do it with no problems and then it just hit loads of problems, i cant get onto the desktop log in screen or anything, i have a windows xp recovery disc but it WONT do anything, does anyone have any ideas please???You need to provide a LOT more details:

2) HOW did you reinstall the OS (EXACTLY)?
3) EXACTLY what is happening now?i reinstalled windows because i had a trojan virus that i just couldnt get rid off, so i wiped my computer clean. I PUT the recovery disc in and a black screen comes up saying hard disk error press f1 to continue so i do then it GOES onto the bios screen, i exit that then a black screen comes up saying press any key to boot from cd, sometimes it will say a disk read error OCCURED press ctrl alt del to restart but sometimes it starts to install as it should do, it went onto a blue screen that says windows setup, and on the bottom of the screen is a grey bar, and it says setup is loading files, then it says setup is starting windows, then another blue screen appears and at the top says windows xp home edition setup, and a error underneath it saying the following list shows the existing partitions and unpartitioned space on this computer. Use the up and down arrow keys to select an item in the list.
- To set up windows xp on the selected item press enter.
- To create partition in the unpartitioned space, press c.
- To delete the selected partition, press d.
Then there is a box underneath with unknown disk ( there is no disk in this drive. ) it has 4 of these, then when i press anything another blue screen pops up saying, a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. if this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try CHANGING video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any bios updates. Disable bios memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe modeto remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.
