Solve : Computer acting strange?

Answer»

Ok thanks I didn't even think about that but I have had my computer 3 years now, so I dunno if they would do it or not.Tell them that if they do not want to then they are in direct violation of the Liscensing Agreement they signed with Microsoft when they decided to SHIP machines without a Windows CD...

This usually gets their attention.Ok well I just got off of the emachines support site and the lady I talked to TOLD me to do a system restore and I told her what I told you guys(but I tried again anyway) to do it and when it wouldn't work I told her that and she said the only thing to do was to do a full system restore and do this
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/Medialess/MLXPMC0/MLXPMC0su14.shtml

Should I do that (I don't want to cuz I don't wanna lose all I have downloaded the good stuff anyway) or should I just ask for the windows XP CD and do what was said above before redoing it to factory restore? Again thanks for all the advice.

EDIT: Also another thing about the problems im having is everytime my AVG antivirus does its scan it keeps getting more and more stuff to scan on it. The other day when I was installing and uninstalling stuff you guys had asked me to try it actually got it down to 700 something items to scan but now it is back over 800 again almost 900 and I haven't downloaded anything else. Would that be something to do with the spyware I had that maybe is still there.According to the link you included, the current data will be moved to C:\backup. Applications will need to be reinstalled, but "the good stuff you downloaded" should still be there. This might be the fastest way to GET your system back to a stable state.

IMO, you should still get a restoration disc from eMachines. USE the line patio mentioned. If your hard drive ever dies you'll be left without an operating system.

Ok I apologize once more but I have one last question(yes I am procrastinating I just hate having to redo things) my bookmarks will be gone along with Firefox won't they? Since I downloaded firefox after I got the computer.Open Firefox, Click Bookmarks, Organize Bookmarks, Export. Save the Export so some sort of removable storage (USB drive, CD-R, whatever)

Solve : Advice wanted on partitioning a hard drive?

Answer»

Salutations,

Again, a big THANKS to everyone who helped me out.

I now have my hard drive PARTITIONED as I had hoped and am back online blasting along at 24 Kbps on my dialup connection.

I did read Eldergeek and indeed have turned to him on several occasions in time past. Special thanks to JJ300 for a nice simple runthrough. Worked without a hitch.

Last question regarding my reload of XP: Should I order the SP2 CD and attempt to load SP2? I have heard conflicting advice on this issue. Some folks say it can cause a host of headaches and problems. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Gracias,
sampI HIGHLY recommend you get SP2 and INSTALL it. Since you've just performed a fresh installation of Windows XP, now is the best time to install SP2. Some of the PEOPLE who complained of problems - a very small percentage of the total population of SP2 installations, by the way - probably had some malware or other unknown problems in their systems before installing SP2 and that may have caused the problems they encountered after installing SP2. In other words, installing SP2 on a clean system is the ideal situation.SP2 is highly recommended...it was touted as a security fix when in reality it was a major upgrade to the OS...Heh... XP has moved onto SP3'

Not sure what all it does. But I know if Explorer.exe crashes it restarts it automaticaly. I dont think that happens pre SP3.
Quote from: fat_basterd21 on July 12, 2009, 09:29:13 PM

Heh... XP has moved onto SP3'

Not sure what all it does. Solve : Serious memory leak, explorer/system?

Answer»

Malware-wise, the log looks clean.

Couple more suggestions...

1. I'd uninstall AVG, which BECAME quiet a hog. Switch to something lighter, like Avast, or Avira. If you decide to do so, make sure, you use AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/download-tools

2. Uninstall Spybot altogether, or at least permanently disable TeaTimer, which is known for hogging computers.

3. You need to update Java:
Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder

Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.

Accept any prompts.

Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.

Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.

Note 1: UNCHECK any pre-checked toolbar and/or software offered with the Java update. The pre-checked toolbars/software are not part of the Java update.

Note 2: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. If you don't want to run another extra service, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click OK and restart your computer.

4. You have unnecessary startups, so for me to see them better...

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.
Do NOT attempt to fix anything!

Ok, I'll take care of it come morning; I can't stand teatimer, never was installed with spybot, I'll take care of AVG, and I have used HJT before, so I know what to look for, just only got rid of infected BS that the virus(s) left. And I'm thinking java may have been the culprit, I remember I got the infection right after using a java web page...I saw TeaTimer running.
You can safely uninstall whole Spybot. It's a tool of the past anyway.

Odd, I opted out for teatimer. SuperAntiSpyware it is then. It did the memory leak a couple minutes AGO, it was going about 30K/second on explorer and nothing was showing up right on the taskbar or anything. Restart FIXED it fine.Free version of Superantispyware doesn't give you real time protection, so when you install it, make sure, it's not installed as a startup.
Check HJT, and you may see TWO entries, one O4 (startup), and one O20 (service).
Disable both.I finally said "F" it, I couldn't even get explorer to load properly, kept crashing so I started over. I'm using different set ups with more security so this kind of thing doesn't HAPPEN. That and stop using the thing for more than a server comp. Thnx again guys! You're welcome
Don't forget to get mote RAM.Money is a little tight, just bough a terabyte hdd too for my media center, was getting a little full on the 320 But definitely is coming up

Solve : Registry can not load the hive.?

Answer»

Quote from: bigal50 on February 28, 2010, 10:41:11 PM

Ive serached for my docs and pictures and they are GONE !!!!!

How did you search? random clicking through folder windows, or did you actually use the search tools that windows provides? if so, what criteria did you specify?

Allow me to re-iterate: renaming two registry files will NOT delete an entire folder tree.

What happened was that replacing the registry files meant that the HKEY_USERS hive now contained different users the it did- possibly with different user names. Either way, the point is, they had different "My Documents" folders.

Your current Account is using a empty My Documents folder created when you rebooted.

Your previous "my documents" folder is still sitting in C:\Documents And Settings\.Ok my apologies. I was just a littel freaked out......but I found a folders with all my data. Pics, doc, Internet favorites, music etc. So how do I get everything back in place the way it was.

When I booted I got a message that read:

Hpqthb08.exe .netframework intialization ERROR
please set registry key HKLM\software\microsoft\.netframe\installroot to point to the .net framework install locator

Does this have something to do with the issues Im am having with the data not being seeing in the RIGHT places.

Again, sorry for my rude behavior. I was just a little freak out an mad at my self for not doing back ups. If I get all this fixed I am going to back up everything ASAP!!!!!

Your data is still there. The registry replacement you made CANNOT delete user data files, only applications.Ok seems everything is there but is it possible to get things back the way they were or am i just going drag and drop things to the new user ?

Right now I am saving whatever I can on to my usb drives for now.I told you right off the bat I could help get you back up and running but all previously installed apps would need to be reinstalled. Nothing has changed. Thanks for you help, Allan !!!!! I will figure it out and install my applications.

But now when I boot my pc I get this message that reads:

Hpqthb08.exe .netframework intialization error
please set registry key HKLM\software\microsoft\.netframe\installroot to point to the .net framework install locator.

Whats that all about.

Start by reinstalling two things:
1) the latest .net framework software and
2) the driver for your HP printerSounds good. But where to i get this .net frame software.

.NET framework.

From what I can tell hpqthb08 looks like it uses a relatively early version of the .NET framework: (1.1) Note that .NET framework versions are not backwards compatible- you can't install Version 3.5 and have a PROGRAM compiled against the 1.1 runtime work.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=262D25E3-F589-4842-8157-034D1E7CF3A3&displaylang=en

You can find other versions there, as well.

However- all that being said- the "hpqthb08" program is really more or less part of the cruft that HP plops on all their machines. you can remove it without any ill effects, and you will not get the message at startup, by using MSConfig:

Start->Run, type msconfig and enter.

On the "startup" tab, unselect the item that starts the program- it should have hpqthb08 somewhere in the line.

Apply, Exit, and restart your PC.

With all due respect to BC, please do NOT use msconfig to permanently alter startup items. Instead, you can download a simple utility like Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel and use that to manage startup apps. Not us. the fact that somebody from reimage even responded to this thread at all is rather curious, and that was my main point. Same with the previous thread. Not sure what you mean by "some one has a go". If you're going to try to get into a debate like this PERHAPS you should bring some semi-intelligent arguments, like rebuttals to the other sides arguments that actually respond to the arguments presented instead of saying "FU Lot" and presenting backwards logic where a member does more on their site then any of us do which is pretty simple logic since a good number of us don't even have accounts at his site and therefore we couldn't really do anything there, as well as the fact that being the administrator of said site it only makes perfect sense that he be doing the most for it.

All that said, I thing Quantos summarized it far better then I ever could.

Just so you know, the member you are speaking to was banned the other night for trolling.ganjaman is not Treval but he has been re-banned by Nathan. I also banned him from Tweaks for posting vile, curse laden attacks against both me and America.I've really enjoyed both of the threads pertaining to REIMAGE that Broni has been an INTEGRAL part of. Among other errors they actually advertised with a MAC laptop blue screening (I know, they could have been running Windows on it, but an unlikely probability). They too used scare tactics as a way of promoting their product, which of course was a repair all elixir.

I don't know, it seems there are many that promise the world for those willing to pay that fall far short of the mark. Solve : Remove Temporary Program Files?

Answer»

If you never hear from me again, you'll know that it didn't work. lol. Gonna dump them all and SEE what happens. ThanksRockey - If you're reading this then all went well and you will have your pc under control.

Post back pleaseOhhh Rockey - you've got me worried - please don't say I've stuffed you like a turkey.

Post back please!!!!Dusty - All's well. So far everything is working. Just busy here. temp is empty.Rockey - that's the best news since sliced bread. Now you will have the confidence to delete .temp files again.

I think you are running Internet Explorer. If that's fact there is another file which you should delete occasionally. When you surf the net IE puts an entry into a file of every site you visit. This file just increases in size ad nauseum. Try to locate the file:

C:\WINDOWS\HISTORY\HISTORY.IE5\INDEX.DAT

(or something close to that but must be Index.dat) and delete it. Note that it's History.IE5 even if you are running IE.6). When I first cottoned onto this one it was over 8Mb & had entries going back almost two years..

ALL index.dat files can be deleted but you MIGHT have to do so in Safe mode.

I was having a beer and the penny dropped that you are using Win.98se whereas I was quoting the file name from XP. The file above is 98se and cannot be accessed from Windows but can be from Dos so just restart in Dos and all will be ok. Mebbe you'd like to check the file size before deleting (dir it). I've edited this post.

Good luck, I enjoyed our little exchange

Dusty-Not sure I am qualified to go into DOS. I might really mess something up. I know how to GET there but I might never get out of there. I am not gonna venture there today. Busy here.Rockey - OK - enjoy yourself.Just thought people may want to know a little shortcut I have on my PC. Open up Notepad (Start > Accessories > Notepad) or any other text-editor, then go to File > Open. Make sure you are looking at All Files in the lowermost dropdown box, and then navigate to the c:\ drive. Open up Autoexec.bat and add this line:
Code: [Select]deltree /y c:\windows\temp\ >nul
This simply clears the Temp folder every TIME you start your PC. The "/y" switch simply confirms every "Do you want to Delete?" prompt and the ">nul" just stops screeds of text appearing. Code: [Select]deltree /y c:\windows\temp\ >nul

You are aware that this will cause problems with program installs that reboot the PC? These PROGRAMS usually load stuff into the c:\windows\temp directory with intent to use them on the restart, and are then supposed to clean up after themselves (few do) once the install is complete.

Better idea is to build a .bat file that you can put on the desktop or in your System Tools subfolder in Accessories on the All Programs menu, and have that include things like emptying the temp directory, history, cache, and/or recycle bin directories. Another thing is to remake the folders you DELTREE'd, for example the above code line should be accompanied:

Code: [Select]deltree /y c:\windows\temp\ >nul:
md c:\windows\temp

This prevents the system from stumbling on an absent environment object next time a temp file is made...

Solve : VMM32.VXD - not found?

Answer»

Buenos dias doctor!

Well, well of course it did NOT work. I have the windows 98 CD and my smart computer that is mad at me for deleting things I shouldn't have done, won't run it. All it says is that Vmm32.VXD not found.

Is there something I can type in manually to start running the CD??

Ohhh what have I done?

Thanx doc,

BeaOK. Is that the Windows XP CD or the Windows 98 CD that you have?

If it is the Windows 98 CD, you may boot from a startup floppy disk, choose the option to enable CD-ROM support, then type D: and press ENTER. Then, put the Windows 98 CD in the CD-ROM drive and type setup and press ENTER.

If that does not work, just let one of us know.

Buenos dias!

Hola Doc!
No, nothing happens when I put in the CD. Well, actually yes, it says could not find VMM32.VXD and VMM32.VXD is neccessary to start windows 98 ... it does not read the CD and does not ask me anything about it. It sounds like it wants to run it though! And also, when I start the computer (no dics inside) it shows the Windows 98 front page and then it goes away and that message comes that VMM.32.VXD was not found.

Is there any hope left??? I hope so...

Thankssssssssss,
BeatrizUuups, I forgot to answer that it is a windows 98 CD NOT xp. I also do not have the floppy disc to boot from. I am not sure which one you mean...Beatriz:

OK, not to worry!

There are two things you may try:

A. You may be able to enter the BIOS setup of your computer and change the boot-order setting to boot to the CD drive before the hard drive. To do this, look for a message that appears on the monitor with you first start the computer that says something like, "Press F2 to enter setup..." Once you get into the BIOS setup, do NOT change any setting except the boot order. Then save the changes by pressing the F10 or some other key and exit the BIOS setup. Then put the Windows CD in the drive and restart the computer by pressing CTRL, ALT, DEL.

B. You may download a boot disk and use it to start your computer. Just go to this site:

http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

Then click on the link to download a Windows Me OEM boot disk and save it to a floppy disk. Then, put the floppy in your computer and turn it on. When asked what you want to do, choose the option to start the computer with CD-ROM support. Then, change to the directory of the CD drive (as i SHOWED you earlier) and type setup and press ENTER. That should do it.

Let one of us know if you need more help.

DocBeatriz:

Here are Microsoft's instructions for installing Windows 98 with a boot disk:

How to Install Windows 98

1. Insert the Windows 98 Startup disk in the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.

2. When the Windows 98 Startup menu is displayed, choose the Start computer with CD-ROM support option, and then press ENTER.

3. If CD-ROM support is provided by the generic drivers on the Startup disk, you receive one of the following messages, where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive:

Drive X: = Driver MSCD001
Drive X: = Driver OEMCD001

NOTE: If your CD-ROM drive is not available after you boot from the Windows 98 Startup disk, install the CD-ROM drivers that are included with your CD-ROM drive. For information about how to obtain and install the most current driver for your CD-ROM drive, view the documentation that is included with your device, or contact your hardware manufacturer.

4. Insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive, type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER

X:\setup

where X is the drive letter that is assigned to your CD-ROM drive.

5. When you receive the following message, press ENTER, and then follow the instructions on the screen to complete the Setup procedure:
Please wait while the Setup initializes. Setup is now going to perform a routine check on your system. To continue press Enter.

The instructions and other info. are found here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221829/EN-US/

Regards,
DocDoc,
no, the problem is that I do not have a start up disc. All I have is a windows 98 CD!!! Is this the end of it? My gosh, I can't believe what I have done. Again, I turn on the computer and it tells me that I am missing VMM32.VXD. If I type D: it won't do it (if that is something that makes sense, anyways. I thought if I do that it goes to the CD Rom). I am helpless, I know. I also don't receive an automatic reminder that you have written me back although I clicked it. That's why it takes me longer because I thought you hadn't written back yet. Aghh, YEAH and if I start the computer with the CD in it, it doesn't read it. I am having the feeling that I need that floppy reboot disk I don't have and this is the end of what you can do for me. :-/ Doc,
sorry I just saw that you had written another email how to get the boot disc. Sorry, about that. I will get that boot disk thing done tomorrow and let you know how that went.
Thanks as always so much!Beatriz:

No problem!

The Windows Me OEM or the Windows 98 SE OEM will both support your CD drive. You may download either one from bootdisk.com.

Let us know how it goes amigo!

DocDoc, can Beatriz run SFC on a '98 from DOS without a '98 CD? (I have totally forgotten what is possible with SFC on '98 )

Bea, is this an XP upgrade CD or a full version of XP with SP2? What are the hardware specifications like on the PC, processor, RAM and hard drive size?

I just finished this on another forum. maybe it wil be of use to you.

"You should boot directly to the Windows XP CD and to make this easy I use OLDBIOS.EXE
which works for new BIOS's as well.

If you download both of these bootdisk images to a hard drive and make one floppy bootdisk for each of them by double-clicking on them you will have adequate means
of doing what you want to do.

DELPART BOOTDISK & OLDBIOS BOOTDISK

When it is made just put the OLDBIOS bootdisk in the A: drive and the Windows XP CD in the CD-ROM drive and re-boot. You need to press any key to boot to the CD and then Windows XP setup should load. (Make sure that the XP CD has SP2 and that it is really clean. I GENTLY wash the CDs in luke-warm water with two drops of soap solution and gently dry them with a clean linen cloth so that there is less danger of read errors.)

You then choose to install XP and have to press F8 to agree to the EULA. When the next screen appears you will have the chance to delete old partitions and make new ones. You should then format drive partition C: and format any other partitions using XP's Disk Management.

If the XP CD does not have SP2 then use AutoStreamer 1·0 to slipstream the core files from the XP CD together with the updated files from SP2. AutoStreamer will make you an .ISO file from which to burn an XP SP2 CD and you then use this CD and not the original to do the installing. (Chose to burn a CD-ROM(ISO) in your burning program.)(I use NERO for this job.)

I install to a 10240Mb (10 Gb) drive C: and partition the drive in such a way that ALL data can be kept on other partitions to make backing up data easier.

Partitioning also means that it is also easier to make a drive image of the C: drive partition when all of the installing and updating is finished so you can use the drive image CDRs (or data DVDs) to restore the entire system in about 30 minutes should anything go wrong in the future.

Useful programs for XP include ERUNT which makes a backup registry automatically, CCLeaner to remove all junk files after installing, Disk Cleanup to remove old system restore points before imaging, and EmpTemp which will remove old system restore information in .old files.

You should also add the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service from MS which speeds up the shut-down time and makes start-up easier too.

If the old partitions will not delete using the XP CD then use the DELPART bootdisk (wxpboot.exe) to delete them.

To do this you need to boot to the Delpart bootdisk and at the prompt type: A:\>dir , (press enter) to see the list of directories. Then type: A:\>cd , delpart (press enter) to change to the DELPART directory and finally type: A:\>DELPART>delpart , (press enter) , to start the Delpart program. Delete the partitions in reverse order finishing up on the Primary drive C: (You need to press the DEL key when using delpart to delete partitions.)

XP Clean Installing
XP Compatability Test
XP Partition Management
XP Installing Recovery Console

RAM Knowledge Base
RAM And What it Does
RAM Virtual Memory Paging
RAM Reseating & Fitting PDF File

Processor Temperatures
Service Pack Slipstreamer
Power Supply Wattage Calculator
Everest Home Edition Computer Diagnostic Program Quote

Doc, can Beatriz run SFC on a '98 from DOS without a '98 CD? The problem is when I click any folder which I intend to open it popup RUN AS: (1) current user (2) the following user: in the (1) current user there is a BOX for protect my computer & data...I have to uncheck this box then only I COULD open the folder I intend to open. Solve : Windows XP stalls for 10mins on startup?

Answer»

Hi all.

I've got a problem the A-team can't even solve!

Ok, I'm currently running Windows WP Professional (SP2) together with an Athlon 2600XP, 128mb Geforce 440MX g/card and 256mb of RAM. Now when I boot up it gets to the welcome page fine then up pops my wallpaper ready for my desktop to appear (icons and all that). However once the background picture appears it stays on that for about 10-15mins and only then does my desktop appear. It kinda springs into life! It's so annoying! My PC works fine after that and shuts down at an acceptable speed.

Now to remedy this I've already formatted my hard drive and performed a clean install twice. I dunno what the answer could be. Is it a windows thing? Is it a hardware conflict (Surely not as it works fine after install)? Is there files missing or settings that need updating?

Also when it's hanging on the background picture, when I go into Task Manager it just SAYS that the system is basically idle so it's not exactly being overloaded with info before the desktop appears either!

I'm really confused on this one and would like to think that there is one person who knows the answer to this or who has experienced the same problem as me! (I've trawled many a page of this forum looking to see if I could FIND a problem similar and I couldn't so maybe this is a new one on ya?)

Thanks a lot.

Any USB devices connected? If, yes, disconnect them. Computer has a NIC card? Unplug and see what happens. Check NIC drivers, you may need to download newer ones.Hi,

Thanks fr replying. I've not got any USB devices connected no and as for a NIC card. What's one of them? If it's a network card, there's one built in? Is that what you mean?

Thanks.NIC = Network Interface Card.

Network Card HelpMany machines made for XP Professional business use come with motherboards that hold 4 x 1024Mb RAM modules and are supplied with at least 1 x 1024Mb module.

So with only 256Mb of RAM I can say, quite DEFINITELY, that you are way low on RAM and probably have a huge paging file.

More RAM = less paging file. So I would MAX out your computer's RAM.

512Mb is really a minimum for XP Pro if you are doing anything serious.

A couple of weeks ago I added 256Mb to an XP machine with only 256Mb less 64Mb video inclusive, so only 192Mb.

Now with 448Mb of RAM the computer performs much better, but then it has a slow drive speed ...

Maybe your icon cache is corrupt ... ?maybe you need to disabled some starup services have a look here>http://www.blackviper.com/WIN2K/servicecfg.htmA couple of things to check if you are running on NTFS. If you have converted from FAT32 you can get 512 byte clusters instead of 4096 byte clusters. This willl slow things down appreciably.

To check this, open a DOS window (in Windows) and type chkdsk, and in the read-out you should see:

"4096 bytes in each allocation unit"

If it says "512 bytes in each allocation unit" then you need to re-format.

If your Master File Table is fragmented this will also slow you down.

Formatting directly to NTFS should prevent this from happening, but if it is fragmented and you have 4096 byte clusters on NTFS then you should use Diskeeper 8 Professional (not Home, the Professional version can be used on XP Home & Professional) and schedule a boot-time defragmentation checking the BOXES to run chkdsk and to defragment the MFT.

Hope that is of help. How old is your mainboard? The board isnt two yrs old,, it should last much longer then that.,, considering the size of it,, but like I said,, i will wait and see what happens,, time will tell, pun intendedMy mainboard is less than a year old and allready I have a dodgy CMOS battery. The most common cause of a PC clock losing time is due to the battery needing to be replaced.Batteries have a shelf-life. So if they use a four year old battery in the manufacture you can expect to get one years use from it.

A new one is not expensive.

I got the same error message when I tried to connect to Windows update. This computer is being used by my daughter in College and only happens when trying to connect to her high speed service. When she brought it home our dial up service worked fine. Any other options?

Hello Burly, Sounds like something is identifying your browser to me. A Trojan or Hijacker. But only on the LAN/DSL connection.

Try running SpyBot SD, AdAware SE, and SpywareBlaster. (I also use AVG Free edition anti-virus and the free Edition of Zone Alarm.)

All programs are freeware and I use them all even on XP Professional.

You may get a situation where one of the anti-trojan programs damages the winsock if there is a Trojan interfering with it. The cure is to uninstall and re-install the DUN (Dial-Up-Networking) in Windows Components under Add-Remove programs.

One of the main reasons why '98/98se "doesn't like" IE6 is that IE6 is a bigger program and most '98s need more RAM for todays internet use.

You can easily find it a struggle using 64Mb (way too low) 128Mb (barely sufficient) but when you go up to 192Mb or 256Mb things start to get better.

Another thing which can slow down '98 is cluster size. If the defrag is painfully slow (you should use the defrag.exe from ME, btw, or Raxco's PerfectDisk, or Diskeeper for 9x) then check to see the cluster size by running chkdsk in a DOS window.

The default cluster size for FAT32 on drives under 8·0Gb is 4096 bytes, but '98 can work much better on 8192 byte clusters.

You would have to re-install if that is the case and force the bigger cluster size by using:

A:\>format c: /Z:16

With XP using format /fs:ntfs gives you 4096 byte clusters anyway on all drive sizes, but you cannot use NTFS for '98. (BTW)

The real answer is to upgrade to XP Home if the computer is compatible as XP's architecture gives a LOT more in the way of system resources.

I see XP Home on offer at US$69.99

http://www.buysoftware.ws/pd_microsoft_windows.cfm.

But do the PC Pitstop compatibility test if you are thinking of going this route and beware the media descriptor problem which can make older floppies unreadable.

The cure is to format new floppies in an XP machine and copy the old floppies to them in a '98 or ME machine.

Also try adding Delindex.bat from www.burzurq.com to her bootdiskette and running it from the prompt in case there is something in the TEMP or Temporary Internet files folders affecting the connection, a bad .js script or somesuch.

A:\>delindex , and press Enter to read the screens and R to run delindex.

Here is some more info on these errors: http://aumha.org/a/kernel32.htm

Another problem with IE6 is upgrading from IE 5·5.

It is better in my opinion to remove IE 5·5/IE6 completely and start over with a clean install of IE6.

The IE6 download is bigger than for other operating systems as it includes components need for '98, so INSTALLING from a CD is not always a good idea.

I use a special means of downloading IE for specific Operating Systems in particular languages:

(NOTE !!! Set up a DOWNLOAD Folder at C:\DOWNLOAD first of all !!!)

The file ie6setup.exe is specific to the operating system AND is ... ALSO ... language specific.

You have to START by downloading ie6setup.exe for YOUR operating system & LANGUAGE into the C:\Download folder.

(You can do this for other Operating Systems on other computers if you burn the entire program to a CD-R or CD-RW.)

The C:\DOWNLOAD folder HAS to be opened to FULL screen before typing the download command into the Run window.

1./ Download the IE6 SP1 Installer from the MAIN WINDOWS DOWNLOAD site:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en IE6SPI DOWNLOAD

2./ Choose the language which you require at the right side of the page.

3./ Download the installer (APPROX. 480+Kb) into the: C:\DOWNLOAD folder, and open the folder to FULL window.

4./ Go to Start> Run>: cut & paste this line into the Run window, then press OK

C:\Download\ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd.exe /d /s:""#E"""

5./ In the download window which appears, choose the operating system which you want to put IE6 SP1 onto and choose the:
C:\DOWNLOAD path, in the top window, then press enter.

All of the IE6 SP1 cabinet files will now download into this folder and you can then either install, or burn to CD.

6./ Remove your old IE completely from your system, either by uninstalling in Add-Remove programs, or by using:
http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html IEradicator for a clean install of IE6 SP1

7./ Run scandisk & and defrag.

8./ Run ie6setup.exe to install IE6 SP1 to your system.

9./ Now fully update your system at the Windows Up-Date site for ALL system-critical and security up-dates:
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com Windows Update

10./ NOTE: Just copy and paste the above line. Otherwise you can get the syntax wrong.

11./ In IE, Tools, IE Options, Advanced, & under "Navigation" Uncheck:

"Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer]

In IE6 Tools, Options, General, set the History to the number you require (I use zero) then open Settings
and set the Temporary Internet Files cache to 20Mb or less.Mac, thanks for help. I plan on going up Wednesday to look at the computer. I think I will get on dial up and install ad-aware and run it and then try to see if her lan connection will work without that error. I will also try the unistall/reinstall of DUN to see if that works. If not I may just reinstall W98 over top of existing. Is this a option?A clean install is a better option as over-installing can mess up an updated system.

With a good clean install, especially on a partitioned drive, you can then image the OS drive (C: ) and in future you can just format c: and restore from the image CDRs.

It is what I do which means that I can format and restore drive C: in under 30 minutes.
