What kind of media do you want to backup to?  Second internal hard drive, external hard drive, dvd etc...?To do a Backup in WindowsME, click Start>> Programs>> Accessories>> System Tools>>> select "Backup".  Self-explanitory after that Quote from: iamtonsoffun247

The backup tool is not automatically installed with ME, SEE KB264541 for an installation guide and see the quote below which is extracted from the guide:

Quote
The Microsoft Backup tool has been included with the retail, released version of Windows Me to help maintain the FUNCTIONALITY of Microsoft Backup after an upgrade to Windows Me. It is important to note that the Microsoft Backup tool cannot provide extensive backup functionality. Because of this, if you need to backup data, Microsoft recommends you obtain and install a third-party backup PROGRAM.
TAKE a look at Acronis True Image...

Download and install Speed Fan.
When you run the program, tell us what temperatures it reads when you first start the computer and about 10 minutes into playing the game. Thanks for the quick response Carbon

When I first started it up the temp was 60....after about 10 min. of gameplay it was at 72-75ishThen I suspect this is the problem. Your computer seems to be overheating and automatically turning off to prevent damage.

Can you put an external house-fan next to the computer and re-post the temperatures.

Is this a laptop or desktop computer? (I assume desktop)Don't play any games, until the problem is solved.
That particular processor MAX, temperature is listed at 72C!!
You're gonna melt it.Its STILL about 60 and then 70 after 10 min. of gaming...

Oh and its a desktop...so I took off the side panel and blew the fan in that way.Have the fan blow at it for about 10 minutes before turning the computer on again.
Now post the temps.55 and 70 after 10 min. of gameplayWell I suggest laying off the game until we can keep the temperature down.
Otherwise, you won't have a computer to use.

You said this problem started when you moved?Yep I am a freshman and college, so my computer moved from a big desk to a small confined desk...Is anything blocking the exhaust or air intake?
Are all the fans working? Not anymore...I turned it around earlier today so the back side of the computer was not an inch away from the wall.

Other than that the fans are working fine...Give it a good blow of compressed air.

Hi, my sytems mother board needs to be replaced. Can I still use the Operating system CD that came along with the restores CDs of the system to reinstall the operating system? its a Compaq PC
Only if the board is identical...otherwise the drivers will be different.

There are 2 methods i have used successfully...but i must ask first:
What is your level of expertise computer wise ? ?I can say good.
Before the Fact

After the Fact

Good Luck and let us know...

Backups are a must in both CASES....

P.S. You will need an XP CD that matches your installed version and Service Packs.
I.E. Windows XPPro with SP2 needs an XP CD with XP2.
An OEM CD which is what you have will not work.

Solve : have three laptops wireless networked, but cant connect anymore?

Answer»

I have 3 laptops connected by wireless Netgear, but all of a sudden they LOST connectivity.  How do I fix this so they connect again?  We need more INFORMATION than this.  Operating Systems? when did this happen? how old is the router?  download anything recently? any power outtages lately>?Oh sorry,  All 3 laptops are running windows XP, my daughter plays games on one of the laptops from like pbskids.org or nickjr.com or something, not the regular store bought games.  So maybe something was downloaded from there.

The router is approx 11 months old.  As to power outtages, yes there has been one recently, but I dont think that is the cause because there have been power outtages before but the wireless still stayed working.

Reset the router by turning it off or unplugging it for 30 seconds or more...
When you re-connect it wait at least 2 minutes to try to logon...

If this doesn't work Post back for some other things to try.I already did the unplugging, waiting 30 sec,  and then replugging, no dice, it doesnt work.  What are all the other steps I should try
Go to Start/Run and open a Command Prompt window...
Once there type in ipconfig /release and hit Enter...
Then type in ipconfig /renew and hit Enter.

If this does not solve it type in ipconfig /all and hit Enter and post the results here...I did that and I got it to work properly.  I am wondering about one thing.  When is it necessary to manually set an IP address, an when is it necessary to set the DNS entry, and what does setting a DNS do?
Check with your provider...most ISP's use a static IP address which means you don't set it because it is assigned each time you logon...
DNS should be set to retrieve automatically.yes i know there is an option to set the ip address automatically which also sets the dns automatically, but there is also an option to set the ip address and the dns manually.  what do setting these manually do
Ruin your connection if your ISP assigns IP ADDRESSES statically...okay but then Ive heard sometimes that you need to assign static IP addresses.  What is the meaning of doing that, I mean how that different from LETTING the ISP decide your IP.  And when you set your IP address to a static one, then it becomes possible to change your DNS.  What does chan GING your DNS do?
I don't understand the question or what you have heard...can you quote a source ? ?

Solve : internet browser closes down when closing popups?

Answer»

My windows internet browser has been shutting down every time I close down a pop up from that window.  It has just RECENTLY begun giving me a security certificate question asking if I want to continue.  when I click yes it will not take me any further and closes out.  Is this viral or can I adjust my settings somehow? What Internet Explorer Version is this?

Also, what website does it prompt the certificate question? Its version 6.0 internet explorer and it occurs when I try to download itunes newer version from the apple website.  I have downloaded a previous version of itunes with no problems.  I just downloaded firefox and I'm not having problems with the popups shutting down when I close them out but it still will not let me download itunes version 8Let me be more specific. The security question pops up on any secure site...ebay, paypal, banking, etc., it says the certificate is out of date even though when you VIEW the certificate dates are with in the correct range. This is a new PROBLEM that has just started over the last few days. It is not RELATED to the problem of the browser window closing. The browser closing has been a problem for months, but manageable by not closing any windows until you are done with browsing.  If you inadvertently close a window or the site does it for you (as in a calender pop up, etc.) then they either all close down or it quits responding and I have to end TASK in task manager. Hope this explains my delimas a little better.

Solve : Default Printer selection keeps changing?

Answer»

I am running Windows XP on a Dell desktop.  THis is hardwired but I also run a laptop through my wireless router.  I have multiple PRINTERS installed, but have one selected as my default printer.  Whenever I reboot my computer, when it COMES back up, the default printer selection has "automatically" changed to another printer.  If I manually change it back and reselect the default, it STAYS that way until I turn off or reboot...then it changes again!I don't know what the problem may be, but I thought I would ask a question.

Is this a recent problem or has it always happened?

What happens if you set it as default, print something (to make sure it works) and then reboot on the spot. Does it change?Actually, this began after I installed a NEW printer (HP L7500 all-in-one).  I DID check all the startup menus, setup guides, etc. to make sure it didn't automatically make it the default (Obviously, I missed something!)  This IS the printer that the default switches to.
It doesn't seem to matter whether I print with the 'non-default' printer or not...it only changes when I reboot. Quote

have one selected as my default printer
Where EXACTLY do you go to do that?

Solve : Urgent Windows Help.?

Answer»

When i start my computer it says that windows has encountered a problem due to either power failure or unproper rebooting.
Then it gives me 5 choices, SAFE mode, safe mode with command prompt, safe mode with network, start with LAST settings, or start  windows normally.

All FIVE start with the windows sign then the computer restarts.
*censored*
Do you have Windows CD?nope
should i get one?It would be a lot easier to imagine what was going wrong if we knew more.

How old is your computer? How much memory does it have?

What version of Windows are you running? Is it up to DATE?

Was it working fine, then this started happening out of the blue? Or did you do something (new program, major update, etc...) just before it started happening?

Can you get into Windows and USE it at all, or does it just keep restarting?

Solve : Office was uninstalled?

Answer» GREETINGS:  With Windows XP Home - When clicking on Word, either desktop icon or from menu, I get the following window:

      Problem With Shortcut
This action is only valid for products that are currently installed
                                 [OK]

I have not (intentionally) uninstalled any OFFICE programs.
When clicking on Word attachments to e-mails, they come up on

Cannot find any saved Word documents.
HELP!!

Any suggestions?  Thanks

All Word files have disappeared?

What happens if you start Microsoft Word through Start --> All Programs --> Microsoft Office?

When did this start?Yes.  All Word files are gone.  With Start  --  All Programs --  MS Office does not appear in the list. Also,  this started sometime in the last two weeks.  I don't USE word on a daily basis.
Bill1. Does anybody else have access to your computer?

2. Was this a legal, full (not trial) copy of Word and do you have the install CD?

3. Have you tried doing a search in C:\Program Files for a Microsoft Office folder?

4. As above, for WINWORD.EXE?

Thank you for your response.

The only other person who has access is my wife and she uses Word less than I do.

This is a legitimate installation of Office 97 and has worked fine on this computer for five years. I have tried INSTALLING it several times and it seems to just take me in a circle ending with unable to install.

I was able to find an Office folder in Program Files, but have not had success in finding or re-installing it.  This is about the limit of my technical expertise and may need some advice with that.
No success with WINWORD.EXE

Office 97 is really old application, so I think, no big deal here.
Get free Open Office: http://www.openoffice.org/
It's COMPATIBLE with the newest M$ Office, and it's....new.

As for lost Word documents, try Recuva: http://www.recuva.com/
It may find something.

Solve : How would I know by looking at some computers if they are?

Answer»

networked through a server, and if they are how do I make a printer into a network printer and access it from all the computers

What is the difference between CONNECTING printers to a server vs networking them by connecting them to a router

Oh by the way , the PCs are all running XP.Are these the computers at your home?
Do you have them all hooked up to a router?Yup, they are at my place.  Two are mine and the other three are a friends.  I had some techie come out and do something to get them to WORK together but that techie is nowhere to be found now and I dont quite REMEMBER what he did to get themm to work together.  Anyways, I want to get a printer also in the setup as a network printer so that it can be ACCESSED by all computers.  I have a router but I dont think it is being used as it in another room and it is only hooked up to a modem but there are no other wires going to any computer.
Well if those computers are on the same network, you would go to Start and then Control Panel. Select Printers and other hardware. Now select Add a printer and the Add printer wizard will run. Here select "a network printer, or a printer attached to another computer". Run the wizard and you should be good to go. You will have to do this on each INDIVIDUAL machine.Would the procedure for adding a network printer be the same whether a server was being used or a router?

And which computer should I install the printer drivers on?

Solve : XP Repair gone bad?

Answer»

Hello Everyone,

I have been using BitDefender antivirus software for several years.  This year I could not install it, getting a WINDOWS INSTALLER error, saying it was too old and to update.  However the update wouldn't complete.  After that I would get a corrupt .cab file error.

I've been contacting the BitDefender staff for over a month now.  I've RUN their analysis programs, most of which didn't work.  FINALLY they were at their wits end.  I suggested a reinstall but they suggested a repair.

So here is how that went.

At ONE point I was asked for a CD named SRCDATA.  I don't have a CD like that, but was able to find the nvata.sys file it was looking for on the C drive.

Then I received an error: INCORRECT COMMAND LINE PARAMETERS: WINDOWS INSTALLER v 2.00.2600.1106

And then an error EXCEPTION PROCESSING OC_COMPLETE_INSTALLATION; FAILED TO LOAD C:\WINDOWS|SYSTEM32\msotcuiu.dll and comuid.dll

After all that the system hung with a black blank screen.

I reconfigured the system to boot from disk.  It took FOREVER.  But when it finally came up I was in 800x600 resolution with 4 colors.

I cannot install the graphic drivers no matter what I do.  I can execute the files but when the process ends with a reboot, I'm BACK where I started.

I also cannot install sp2.

I haven't even tried to install BitDefender.  That's their problem anyway.

I have an ASUS A8N mb with twin GeForce 8800 graphic cards.

I run my business on this computer so I need to resolve this thing.

Do I REALLY need to reinstall XP?  (please say no)I think if I were you I'd boot up any way I could. Then, make a back-up of my important files and then do a re-install. I'm sure you might be able to repair at that point but it seems as though you might have Registry problems, and it's easier to re-install clean than to rebuild the Registry ..I could be wrong, but I think that :-
system Restore will automatically replace a corrupted registry with an image of how it used to be;
That will correct the corruption, so long as you have an early enough restore point.

Regards
Alan
I believe that the Restore points were erased when I did the repair.

The question is, why does the system not come back to a normal state regardless of the number of repairs I do?  I've done 2 so far.If it did come back it is not Windows !!!

Often a problem can be fixed with ease, but sometimes stuff just happens.

My experience of both Anti-virus and Firewall products is that they not only try to deal with nasty stuff before it gets into the computer, they also recognize that the other protection product might let the team down, and permit something nasty.

Due to this possibility they are afraid that having got on-board, the unknown nasty might try to disable them so that Mr nasty can go on the rampage.  Because of this fear they may sink many extra hooks into the system, and it can be a race for the anti-virus to see a broken hook and repair it before the virus has broken all the other hooks.

The system, and perhaps the registry, could be corrupted during this battle.

Even without a virus battle, a simple programming error in Bitdefender could corrupt what might be a complex set of interrelated hooks.

If you really want to know what went REALLY wrong, I think you need an on-site forensic examination of the P.C. by an expensive specialist.

I suggest you just accept that something happened, and hope it does not happen again.

Alan
Thing is, BitDefender is not on my system.  It could never be installed.  I've been using it for years now, but this year's edition wouldn't work.

The problem was that Windows Installer was out of date (according to the error msg.) and I could not update it.  After another attempt I would get a corrupted .cab file as the error msg.

That's when the staff at BD took over.  Countless programs were run analyzing my system, searching for viruses, etc. But most couldn't be run.  Most of the time it was the .cab corruption again.

So there is no firewall or antivirus that would be interfering with the repair.

Question still is, why won't a repair work if there aren't any active programs that would interfere?

Hardware failure. Disk corruption.
But a CHKDSK shows no problems.

Perhaps I should run it again.Try to upgrade Windows installer...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482FC-5F56-4A38-B838-DE776FD4138C&displaylang=en

When I try to execute this I get an ACESS DENIED window.

In fact that's the same error window I get when trying to install sp2 - which used to be installed on this PC.

Anything I should be looking out for that may have caused this? Here is an update.

Using the CD from the graphic driver manufacturer, I have been able to bring the display to 1024x768 resolution.

At last I can see every window and I'm back to 32 colors highest.

I did get a warning when installing that the loading drivers are older than the ones in the system, but I continued anyway since for some reason they weren't being recognized.

However I cannot change the refresh rate.  The Advanced option only has one row of tabs.  The windows "ripple" as they move - I'm sure you know what I mean.

And the system is still slow - especially in boot ups.

Now - what can be done about the Windows Installer??

Thanks for your help.

Clik Here...I had the EXACT same problem.  My WinXP install was at SP1 (because I had just installed WinXP Pro with an old install disk).  When I tried to install my Nvidia video driver, upon reboot, I only had 4 colors and 600x800 resolution.  After much troubleshooting and after having a good cry and a stiff drink, I downloaded SP3 and installed it and VIOLA!  My resolution suddenly fixed itself!

I'm thinking this problem must have something to with later versions of the Nvidia drivers being designed for WinXP SP3 and not earlier service pack versions.

I wonder if they even tested their driver on earlier WinXP Service Packs.

Anyway, I hope this helps you.

Solve : reinstalled XP oops--files are gone?

Answer»

My computer wouldn't boot up.  I tried a couple repair options I read about., but they didn't work so I reinstalled Windows XP from the disk.  I didn't know that would delete all my files, but my computer desktop is now WIPED clean of all programs, documents and files except for the XP operating system.

Have I lost the info for good?  I'm afraid many of my BACKUPS are at least a month or two old.

Beth Quote

WELL, yes, when the system is Installed/Reinstalled it creates many new files which cause reference to any old files to be deleted.  One of those files is the Desktop folder from which your desktop display is generated.  There are many many more.  You now need to update your OS probably at least to SP.3 and there are more updates which were released after SP.3.  Also your anti-virus and third party firewall progs will have to be reinstalled.  All programs which you used must be reinstalled.

'Fraid so unless you care to spend big dollars with a data recovery specialist who might be able to recover some files, there is no guarantee.

A Repair Install would not have deleted your files.

Good luck

Dusty, is there any chance Beth's files are still somewhere on the C drive in a no-longer-referenced documents and settings folder? Would it be worthwhile for her to open her C directory directly and search in documents and settings? Could there be a new user profile and an old one that the system isn't recognizing?

Just a guess. I had my profile go bad one time. All the files disappeared, but were still there when I looked in the right place.

Beth -- don't get hopeful. Dusty probably knows more than I do, so I'm not at all confident of this idea.

Needless to say, popping in a CD and backing up My Documents periodically (I do that plus back up all changed files to a flash drive daily) is essential. I had an entire hard drive just die irreparably on me one time. BACK UP!!!

Yes, but recovering them requires specialized software which is expensive.

I doubt it, she would be searching in the newly created D&S folder, but I'd like to be proved wrong.

Don't under-estimate yourself, my knowledge level is abysmally low when compared to many of the CH forum members.  I had hoped someone more knowlegeable than I am would have added a few comments to this thread.  Where's BRONI when he's needed?

My only foray into file recovery has been to recover files which have been unintentionally deleted by users, either directly or via the Recycler.  For that I use a program named Recovery which might help in this case but I have serious doubts about that.  Sorry to sound so negative.

Recovery is available from this site, perhaps Beth3 will install and use it.

Solve : How do you turn off your computer??

Answer»

To turn it on again, that's what the screwdriver is for.

Well ANYWAYS, back on TOPIC (following Soybean), I normally use Stand By for school (when switching classes and such) but, at home, I use Shut Down overnight.
Never tried Hibernation, never going to try. I always shut down fully.
I remember my laptop had problems with standby that I could never resolve, it was very slow after waking up even if I left it for an hour or so to run the sleep from its circuits.
Seriously, standby made my laptop very slow and waking from hibernate took as long as a cold boot.
Hibernating on this computer is only slightly faster than a cold boot, not tried standby.
I don't think any power saving modes would benefit me personally anyway - if my computer's on I'm using it, if not I turn it off.My desktop is the one with which I sometimes use Hibernation.  When I use hibernation, it's not mainly to save time starting up again, although it does save some time.  As I said my previous post, the main reason for using hibernation is to save a work session rather than having to close all open applications.

My son sometimes uses my desktop computer and sometimes leaves some programs running. If I sense that he may have intended to come back to what he was doing but I know he won't be back at the computer for awhile, that would be an example of a situation where hibernation comes in handy.I see the point there, but I'm the only user of my computer, so that doesn't really apply to me.
Anything I'm WORKING on I just save before I shut down.Yeah, I can see how that is very useful.

I think the only flaw in my laptop's power-saving feature is that any keystroke wakes it up from Safe Mode. Very annoying as I have to wait about 30 seconds before I can re-engage Safe Mode, otherwise my laptop would freeze for a minute.I always hibernate, and shut down only if I GET some serious problem, something like virus, to enter the safe mode. I love hibernation on a laptop. Mainly because of the fast load about 5 - 10 seconds after I open it I'm READY to go. This was most useful at school and now when I am doing presentations and jumping around from room to room all day.
You do need to shut down every now like a desktop. Hibernation can take up a bit of disk space but that is becoming less of an issue.

Joei use the command Code: [Select]shutdown -s -t 000

Solve : "hold" key?

Answer»

I need some quick help.  I have downloaded Picasa (photo management/sharing site) and it REQUESTS pressing the "hold" key when selecting photos from different files that hold pictures.  I can't find this key on my keyboard or any reference to it in any documentation on line.  Is this just a typo in Picasa's INSTRUCTIONS, or what.  ThanksI'm sure it's the CONTROL key they mean (Ctrl).
Good Luck. There is a green "hold" button in Picasa.
Thanks...I found the hold key, but I haven't had a chance to try it.  I was trying to make a collage, while putting the pictures I wanted to use in a certain  file folder.  In the meantime, I have created an album file (which I think limits me to 12 pics) and made a collage out of it and it's FANTASTIC.  This is really a great tool.....I just paid to have a collage made of some old family photographs that I  had scanned to my computer.   I'll likely learn more about this software/site as I play around with it.

Solve : Computer is wanting to boot up in System Recovery Console?

Answer»

OS: XP Home
version '02 SP3

Compaq Presario
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
2.13 GHz, 224 MD RAM

Browser: Firefox latest versaion

Windows security setting on High.

Skill level: I am a computer 'user', not a programmer or thoroughly understanding of a computers ins and outs. No DOS experience really. So moderate navigational ability.

After my system BOSD'd, a friend lent me his system he has had in storage for awhile. He apparently maxed most of his hard drive memory space with music programs and files mostly. It had been operating between just under a 100 MB at times(I know, this is dangerous) to just above 400. When it was around 200 I consulted with my friend on what programs I could possibly remove to free up space. We removed what should have been about 200 to 300 MB, but when I looked there was just over 300 MB.

Well, it was operating okay and staying above 300(I clear the temporary files after every internet session), but then there was a small Windows security update and shortly after that I noticed it was up over 600 MB!

Yesterday, it took a LONG time for the system to start up and for the user profile to get started as well, then my Windows firewall alerts me it was inactive. AVG has had the email scanner mysteriously disabled a couple times recently, but 'righted themselves'. One time about 4 of the AVG scanners were inoperative, but I restarted and it was fine.

Also, recently AVG has isolated a couple potential 'hack tools':
10/22 - C:\hp\bin\Terminator.exe
10/24 - C:\System Volume Information\_restore{long line of numbers and letters}\RP8\A0000685.exe

This second one seems to possibly be relevant to my problem:

Sometimes it will be moving along just fine and then other times super slow. After the Windows security update it seemed to be moving along great, but I am on Facebook, Youtube, Tribe.net, Myspace which seems to drag it down and fill up space even after clearing internet files. Today though, I changed some settings in the System's Performane Advanced options to see if that could help with memory usage and I was on Tribe for awhile, clicked some links to Youtube and one to the ACLU's site, and after this I check my MB and it's down a bit even after I clear things, so I decide to restart the computer because it seems that helps sometimes.

Now, usually when it is starting it goes to the screen where you have two options of what to start up in and it is set to wait only 3 seconds and loads up in what it has highlighted to begin with, and that has been Windows XP Home edition, but this time it says System Recovery Console first and WinXP H ED. second and I didn't catch it before it advanced. It gave me 3 options (2 from D:\, 1 from C:\Win XP), I was able to hit enter to have it restart and then move the bar down one to highlight WIN XP HOME and then start, it worked, but when it gets up both the AVG and Windows firewalls have been disabled!

I enable them and restart, but it is still wanting to start in System Recovery Console.

What is going on?!

It occurred to me that possibly this computer had been 'zombied'(not really sure how that works, but I get the gist), after the Win sec. update freed up so much space and it was moving faster, like it had disconnected something that was on here taking up space and operating time, but I really don't know.

I came to this site to post to forum, clicked on the Support graphic on the main page first, then the 'Display your system information and plugins' and saw that it was recommended to update things because they have necessary security updates as well. I did Java first, odd things with Java had been happening so I was hoping this would help, but after installing the Java site has a test graphic that didn't work and gave me this:

Computer seems to be operating okay right now, not too slow, but I still want to know what is going on when it is booting up.

Thanks for any consideration.

P.S.: I forgot to mention that I ran an AVG full system scan last night as I went to bed, got up in the morning, woke it up out of 'sleep' and AVG said it didn't find anything.

8:03pm Update: Just restarted the computer and noticed that it says Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, in case that makes a difference, and now AVG says the E-mail scanner is inactive again.Your system appears to have been infected.  Please wait for one of the CH Authorized Malware Removal Specialists to drop in.

Good luckAwww.shoot!

Help me CH Authorized Malware Removal Specialists, you're my only hope!   Monday 10/27 1:24pm update: Tried a system restore(check point 10/24) and now the boot directories are switched back to normal, with Windows XP Home first and Win Recovery Console second, boots like normal, but when I entered my user account the first time AVG had 4 components off again(Firewall, Email scanner, Web Shield and Update manager). It was at the restore poitn where I had to do the Windows security update installation(regarding 'remote access' threat), so reinstalled and restarted. It booted okay still and the AVg Update manager was on, other 3 still off.

Did restore again(10/21), booted okay and system restore says: Restoration Incomplete. Tried this for 3 more dates back, no more before the 17th due to low disk space I believe. So at this point it is booting okay, but AVG is still messed up and it is back to loading real slowly.

Perhaps I will remove AVG, then get another free security program. Anything good on the 'free' range besides Avast? This computer doesn't have much space and I think Avast would only make it run slower.

Solve : Unzip "unknown" file script?

Answer»

Hi, I am new to VBS scripts. Here is my problem. I have a zip file generated by my PC drive A:\ and each time I have a different file name name generated for example line SDD+6+20+6536+1+PD+20081027+105138.zip

This is what i need to do. I need to have VBS script which would unzip this file into my C:\temp without knowing the file name...

This is where I am with it:

STEP1- this script would copy the above mentioned file from A:\ to C:\
Code: [Select]Const OverwriteExisting = True
SET objFSO = CREATEOBJECT("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
objFSO.CopyFile "A:\*.zip" , "C:\temp" , OverwriteExisting

Step2- grab the name of the file in C:\temp
Code: [Select]'Option Explicit
Const ForReading = 1, ForWriting = 2, ForAppending = 8
Dim objFSO, objFldr, objSFldr, objFl, objStream, sFile, sPath, sExtension
'// Create the FileSystemObject
Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
'// The file you want the dir printed to...
sFile = "C:\temp\filename.txt"
'// The folder you want a dir of...
sPath = "C:\temp"
Set objStream = objFSO.OpenTextFile(sFile, ForAppending, True)
'// Get the folder
Set objFldr = objFSO.GetFolder(sPath)
For Each objSFldr in objFldr.SubFolders
For Each objFl in objFldr.Files
sExtension = "." & StripExtension(objFl.name)
objStream.WriteLine Replace(StripFilename(objFl.Name), sExtension, "")
Next
Next
objStream.Close
Set objFSO = Nothing
Set objStream = Nothing
Set objFldr = Nothing
Set objFl = Nothing

Function StripFilename(strFile)
  dim sTemp
  sTemp = Split(strFile, "\")
  StripFilename = sTemp(UBound(sTemp))
End Function

Function StripExtension(strFile)
  Dim sTemp
  sTemp = Split(strFile, ".")
  StripExtension = sTemp(UBound(sTemp))
End Function

Step3 - unzip the file into C:\temp directory
Code: [Select]strZipFolder = "C:\myfilename.zip"                                       'name of zip file
outFolder = "C:\temp"                                       'destination folder of unzipped files

  Set objShell = CreateObject( "Shell.Application" )
  Set objSource = objShell.NameSpace(strZipFolder).Items()
  Set objTarget = objShell.NameSpace(outFolder)
  intOptions = 256
  objTarget.CopyHere objSource, intOptions

In step2 the script would dump the filename into the file filename.txt but I want it to substitute that file name with myfalename name so I can unzip that file.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks. UNLESS I missed something, you copied all the files from the floppy to temp. Then you create a text file listing the contents of temp. Then you decompress the zips from temp.

In step 2 you have a handle to the files to unzip (objFl). Try moving the unzip LOGIC from step 3 to step 2. After writing to filename.txt, you can use objFl.Path as the strZipFolder.

Another solution would be to copy each file from the floppy one at a time and doing the unzipping in step 1 directly off the floppy. The would prevent zip files mixing in with other extensions.

Solve : complete reformatting hard drive?

Answer»

Hallo.

I've just bought a near new computer (9 months old) and it had Windows XP SP2 installed. It came with an OEM XP SP-2 disk as well. The hard drive is partitioned 2 ways. C=9Gb and D=148Gb. There is a Windows program in both hard drives. I have been updating Windows XP with SP3, but it will only instal it in the smaller C drive. And I get the message that there is insufficient room in C drive. The updates will not instal in the LARGER D drive, which also has Windows XP on it as well.

My plan is to completely reformat the drive and only use a single drive for both the windows and the programs.

This computer also has no floppy drive.

Can I just put in the OEM disk in the drive and see what happens. I am not confident ENOUGH for that.

Any help is welcome.

Bert Assuming you have the original OEM the XP was installed with you can easily format the whole drive and reinstal windows the way you like. The easiest way is to do a complete reinstall. So make sure you back up all the stuff you wanna keep because you wont have anything left once you are finished it will be a fresh new setup. All you gotta do is put in your OEM and make your computer boot from the disc. Follow the instructions to where it will come to a SCREEN that you will see all the PARTIONS on the Hard Drive. You have to MANUALLY select each partition to delete them and after you have them gone you can pick the largest file area on your drive...it will show something like how much space and then a space that has like 8gb or so. Once you select your partion (which will be the whole drive) it will give you the option to format..try not to use the quick option if you can. Once it formats your good to go. Follow the rest of the instructions and you will soon have a fresh start of Windows XP. Hope this helps out and good luck its not as bad as it seems. Hello back again

This sounds easy as pie to do that. Thanks for helping me.

Solve : Bigger than the Screen??

Hi Folk

I have a problems thats been bugging me hugely.
So, I decide to upgrade my computer to enjoy gaming. I have a 50" Flatscreen Panasonic Viera TV and have plugged my computer into it via a HD cable ... non of the screen settings fit the screen properly and theres' image runover. The graphics card has a handy screen adjustment so you can GET it just right. It is currently running at 1216 x 684 (the nearest screen size is 1280 x 720). In desktop mode the proportions are right, but as soon as I ENTER a game the HEIGHT and wide is wider and I assume it is going back to 1280 x 720 as games don't have an in between setting.

Oh yea, and all the drivers are current and up to date.

Any advice is appreciated

Solve : Major Computer Mess-Up, Possibly A System Crash?

Answer»

I did a search, couldn't find anything...anyway...

I started my computer up one morning, and it froze up on the loading screen. Then I started it up again and it LOADED fine, but when I tried to log in, it froze there again. Now, though it hasn't done that again, when I do log on, there are many, many things wrong with it.

This includes the background not appearing or saving, cookies disabled (I think, passwords and history aren't saving, &c), things such as history and screensaver not saving, videos not loading, and me not being able to download programs and such from the internet, icons removed from my screen, and programs such as Gmail chat being removed, EVEN though ones like Skype and Google Earth are still on there, &c.

I also noticed that even though most files are still able to be found via Search, for instance, music files, I cannot really save them anywhere, and Media Player won't even load.

Now, unfortunately, I don't have the disc for my comp. I could try to get another, but I'd like to know if there's another way. I took some advice from friends, and I Defraged it, did a System Restore, CLEANED my disc, etc.

Oh, yeah. I have a (I think this is right) 2001 Windows Latitude, made for Windows XP.

That's about all I know. Oh, and can someone also explain how I find out if XP was installed in the FACTORY? THANKS a lot. With so many problems, I'd go for reinstall.

Solve : General Protection Fault possibly windows related?

Answer»

Hello all, im new to the site and not particularly knowledgable when it comes to computer faults.

If anyone could help me out with this I will be very much appreciative.

Last time i went on my laptop I had an update install that I didnt think was important so when i couldn't cancel it I turned my laptop off with out it completing.  the next time i turned my laptop on it loaded up to an error page and it wont LOAD pass this. Its a general protection fault error and this is the message that comes up:

TRAP 0000000D GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT tr=0028 cr0=00000011 cr2=00000000 cr3=00000000 cs:eip=0008:0042C848 ss:esp=0010:0061FDD errcode=820C flags=00010007 CyNoZr IntDis Down TrapDis eax=C2011FFF ebx=004013B0 exc=00001618 edx=534D0040 ds=0010 es=0010 edi=0047164E esi=00051D67 ebp=00061FEF cr0=00000011 fs=0030 gs=0000

I've been told it could be to do with a fault with windows and that i should BOOT the laptop from CDROM and insert the windows CD and chose to repair the software.

The only cd i have is a microsfot works xp one that CAME with my laptop and nothin happens when i insert this.

I know i have chosen to boot it from CDROM correctly as when i insert a full system recovery cd that i have this loads up with the option to perform a full system recovery. however i dont want to do this as i have loads of files etc on my laptop that havent been backed up which i dont want to lose.

Does anyone know how to FIX this error?? Quote

I turned my laptop off with out it completing
By now, you know, it's very bad thing to do, don't you?
Most likely, you screwed some system files.
Micro$oft Works CD won't help here.
You need Windows XP CD to perform Windows repair.
Borrowed CD will do. It has to have same Service Pack, as the one installed on your computer.

Answer» HELLO all.... I am wondering if there is anything I can do to play my home videos in Vista. I recently switched from XP Media Center several months ago and didn't realize this PROBLEM until my WIFE WANTED to see some of the old birthday videos. All My videos was made in XP (weddings, birthdays ect) Im not the big memory buff but I do it for my wife. I have TRIED numerous codecs and everything I could think of I even installed the same software I used to create them. Nero 7. Any info would be great I like Vista and would hate to switch back to XP just to play her videos. Thanks Again. What player are you using?

Solve : Adobe Reader failed to read larg files?

Answer» HI friends,

I have installed Adobe Reader8.0 in my friend's PC it got failed reading files of size more than 2MB. first I thought, it must be a fault in software itself but when I analyzed that same setup is working FINE in my own PC but not in that then I came to be sure that it must be a SYSTEM concerned issue.
when I try to open the LARGE files, adobe readers takes too much time to prepare itself for reading pages and ultimately it comes to be hanged.

interestingly, the target PC shows a whole part of its total main memory/RAM.
when I saw, My Computer->Properties->hardware
I did see,  512MB of RAM.

actually that system have a DDR2 SDRAM of 512MB.  but my own system  shows a total of 448MB RAM even though it has DDR2 SDRAM 512MB.

I think some part of the total main memory engaged by video system.

well, whatever the reason is there I am not sure. please you tell me.

thanks in advance.
Try Foxit. I have found it to work better than adobe and its faster.

http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

would you please explain the memory issue in target system that I have given the information for?Sounds like 64MG is being borrowed for video...any ONE else have any analisys regarding this problem? Quote from: patio on November 01, 2008, 08:44:06 AM
Sounds like 64MG is being borrowed for video...

Where are you getting these RAM #'s from ? ?
And this is probably what it is.99 times out of 100 the RAM is used for video as Patio said.

Solve : Registered Software?

Answer»

I will soon be changing my MB & Processor.  (upgrading) and was WONDERING if there is an easy way to KEEP all the registered software that I have now so that I don't have to reload it all and find (and punch in) the registration keys as I am also going to have the shop do a CLEAN install of XP.  Are the keys hidden anywhere
that I could copy & paste them back in later if I were to save them to an external harddrive or one of my other drives that won't be changed or altered?
Windows XP SP3

Thanks.there are SEVERAL programs that can be used to RETRIEVE keys. One of which is called RockXP.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/rockxp.html

I don't know if it will cover all the applications your looking to retrieve keys for, but it can grab the windows key, Office keys, and the keys of several microsoft products.

Solve : File access?

Hello

I have 3 Users on a XP Home Laptop. Windows is corrupted so I took out the hard drive

I got the contents of the first two users Documents and Settings folders copied.

How can I access those files again? (assuming that version of Windows is very dead.)

Thanks for help

Solve : Missing fonts?

Answer»

Ive been seeing certain fonts, or more specifically, special characters, from pages all over the net. The 'missing' comes up as things like ગુજરાતી. Ex, wikipedia.( SEE attached). No major system modifications lately. Also, if its any use, when i RUN CCleaner registry scan (I have not removed anything), it detects "font issues".There are many of these... possibly 75+

Windows XP home SP3
attached dxdiag should supply all other relevant info...

Does Windows fully load, and then you're getting the error?

And assuming that your pcloginnow software has restored your main account to administrator privilege?yes i've tried to change it from that account but it did the same thing

Solve : missing MSimg 32dll /missing?

Answer»

After installing Opera browser, each time it starts, message comes up SAYING Msimg 32dll is missing, PLEASE install from ME instalation disc.
Never had Windows ME, so will it work in 98se, and where can i get it from as i don`t have disc. Do have windows 98 install disc.
This system IBM 300 gl desktop.
Pentium ll
reformated/new install of win98se
banshee graphics card.
seems to be working fine except for this missing file. Have spotted a referance to this POSTED by Broni but can`t find it. any help would be much appreciated guys.search the computer for that .dll and then search the win 98 cd for it...if ya find it copy it to where ever it was supposed to be.I have found the MSimg 32dll in the windows system FOLDER on the  computer. File version 5.00.1693.1  Description GDIEXT client dll
The dll on the installation disc is exactly the same, i have copied it to a folder
for the time being.
Should i delete the one in the system folder, before copying the one i have saved to the system folder.
I noted that when starting Opera browser the error message says the Msimg 32dll is missing or OUT OF DATE
Is this maybe why opera is asking for the dll from Windows ME edition, in which CASE where do i get a copy as i don`t have an Me installation disc.

new update/ problem solved/just in case anyone else has the same message from the opera browser. The poor picture display was being caused by a bug in the diplay driver now reinstalled. Downloaded ME dll just in case but havn`t installed it as opera is now displaying fine.Proved that the error message was misleading, at least in this case.
Error mesage no longer occures after checking don`t display box. i know others are having problems getting rid of this message.

Solve : Online O.S.?

Answer»

I've read that in the future the O.S. may be online and not in our computer. I'm wondering about security issues. What do you THINK? Where did you read this !!!

Can't right now see that is remotely feasable - not least because MANY (myself included) will be doing work inside applications that have a total zero to do with internet and so require a total ''on board'' OS to operate..

PLUS too - that WOULD assume all puter users have good connections - not something I'd want to rely on!online, not in the near future, but network computers (whereby a central server manages a multitude of terminals) has been present for ages (VAX, for example). It's just a matter of waiting for internet connection speeds to get to a more acceptable minimum.

Solve : problems after windows reinstall?

Answer»

i have COMPAQ presario sr1200, reinstalled windows xp, no problem, added missing drivers from HP website. Then after doing updates, i go to click start, and lose my mouse and keyboard, cant do anything, reboot, then just black screen, this has HAPPENED twice in a row, i am thinking the video DRIVER, but i am getting from the website, so dont know whats going on.
any ideas?
thanks.I have a feeling that the updates CORRUPTED the boot sector or something else very important. Keep trying reboots, maybe a system recovery if possible and if this is a new install I would consider starting over and make sure to delete the hard drive partition and make a new one.

If you had to set the bios to boot from CD 1st for install, be sure and put it back to boot from the hard drive with windows on it after install.

good luck Quote

after doing updates
Including SP3?
Are you using USB mouse, and keyboard?no i didnt install sp 3, just other updates. I am doing a complete reinstall again, after deleting the partition. see what happens.ok, deleted partition, then made new one, formatted, installed windows, everything was good, installed windows updates , but not sp3, everything good on restart, then got another windows updated installed then it finished, i went to click restart now, everything froze. rebooted, windows starts to LOAD, then blue screen, curser with hour glass, but wouldnt move, frozen solid.
Any other ideas guys?
thanks again. What was the initial reason for reinstall?hey guys, i dont know the original reason for reinstalling, i did it again reinstall, after getting windows updates,  mouse and keyboard go out, reboot, and have no video or mouse or keyboard, can boot into safe mode a couple times, i went in took out the last update, still no good, then it boots and goes to black screen, cant even go into safe mode.
I changed out hard drive with a working one, and just kept rebooting, any ideas?
thanks.i think i finally figured it out, looks like it was a stick of ram, removed one, and voila, its all good.
thanks for the help along the way, boys.Nice job

Solve : movies stalling now?

Answer»

online video CLIPS used to play smoothly. Now, in the last week or so, it seems they don't play near as WELL, and seems they have to stop and buffer alot more. What would cause this change? I've done full virus/ spyware scan. All that comes to mind right now is - your internet speed.  If you hit the pause and wait for the DATA to come down - does that seem super slow compared to what you'd expect.?  if so then something amiss with your connection perhaps.  Is CPU super busy at all?

If all stuff to view is FLV ... is your Flash Player up to date?  It's up to V10-something now and v9.0.124 I think it is NEEDS an upgrade too due to vulnerability issues - to 9.0.151, if not that then GO to V10.

Solve : ATI VPU Recover Error - plz help?

Answer»

Ok, so here are my system specs:

I have an Emachines, model #D3107 with recently installed 2G of ram(400Mhz) (2 1G sticks). I have a Sapphire Radeon HD 3650 512MB DDR2 memory VIDEO card that has also recently been installed. My mainboard manufacturer is MSI, model # MS-7142. I have an AMD Sempron 3100 processor (1.8Ghz)(1600Mhz). The video card before the upgrade was onboard S3 Unicrome Pro Integrated Graphics 64MB DDR shared, comes with an AGP slot for upgrading. Chipset is VIA K8M800.

Everything seems to be running fine until I OPEN any 3D gaming application, at which point, in most cases 5 minutes into running the app, my graphics accellerator resets and I get an ATI VPU recover error message.

I have tried updating my chipset drivers, video card drivers, checked to make sure my operating system is doing regular automatic updates, which it is, and I have even gone so far as to make sure all drivers my computer could possibly use (that I could think of) are current, and I am still having this problem. The only thing I haven't done is attempt to update my BIOS because I am extremely unfamiliar with this area other than to know that to mess up even a little bit can result in system failure. I have run a memory test to insure that the new ram is operating properly, and it is.

I am at a loss. PLEASE help me solve this issue. Thank you in advance.
after you left chat I did sime RESEARCH and found a forum with some answers and fixes

so the new card will prolly do the same error...here is the info read it

This shouldn't matter...the WinNT folder should still be there.

rafael do a search on D: and E: for WinNT.
You may have inadvertantly installed it onto another partition.I already did a search on the other partitions.

The Windows folder is in C: but the windows explorer doesn't show it. I analized the partition with ACRONIS Disk Director and the folder appeared in C:. But the Disk Director isn't the explorer, I can't open the folder...And yes, I logged as an Administrator...I forgot to tell you that I have the problem since the very moment I formatted the disk and reinstalled Windows XP Professional SP2.

After the installation, I've never been able to see the Windows folder with the explorer, neither from the tool BARS in the task bar, at the bottom of the screen...

It's like it wasn't there, but actually, it is...

I have NOD 32 installed and up to date.

Previous to the reinstallation, I had the same partitions but I don't remember having that problem, I'm not sure since I didn't need to examine the folder.can you force explorer to go into the folder?

start->Run

explorer C:\windows

or

explorer C:\winnt

?TRY typing %SystemRoot% into run.Hi Kip:

I typed %SystemRoot% into Run and I finally had the windows explorer showing the Windows folder.

At least I have a solution for the problem, that I can use whenver I need to explore that folder.

Solve : Need help with an undeletable folder.?

Answer»

Have you tried hooking it up to another COMPUTER and deleting the FOLDER that way? I have seen this before. It normally HAPPENS when some A$$hole thinks its funny to plant a file in a zip file that has nonstandard characters. They are ASCII characters that windows can't show without a ADD on. And even than its a real pain to get rid of the file. It’s normally the way some hacker groups "tag" a machine to show that they were able to get to a machine.

The fastest way to get rid of it is to copy the stuff you want to KEEP off the drive and than format it.

Info on Unicode....

You can try to install a unicode text editor and sometimes it will let windows show the file name.

Solve : Custom Windows Service --help?

Answer»

Hello I am trying to get WINDOWS media player to run from a service on 3 windows 2000 PRO sp4 systems. The reason for the service is to start and stop windows media player remotely so that I can add a routine into my batch process which will NET STOP copy the latest onhold.mp3 file to the 3 systems, then NET START to launch mplayer2.exe /play onhold.mp3 at c:\onhold on these 3 systems.

I used the process linked here http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=197

to be able to create a custom windows service named onhold and everything works EXCEPT for Windows Media Player will not launch and I get an error message of:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Microsoft Management Console                                                [X]

Could not start the OnHold service on Local Computer
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

                                                          [ OK ]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is the registry tree that references to my custom created service:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
        |
        L SYSTEM
              |
               L CURRENT CONTROL SET
                              |
                              L SERVICES
                                       |
                                       L OnHold
                                              |
                                              L ENUM
                                              |
                                              L PARAMETERS
                                              |
                                              L SECURITY

Under the OnHold there is a ImagePath instruction set to Type Of = Reg_Expand_SZ pointing to c:\onhold\mplayer2.exe to trigger windows media player to hopefully launch when the service is started, but I get the failure above when trying to start it.

When initially creating the service following the directions linked in that URL, the service can start and stop fine, but nothing happens. But when I GO to alter the ImagePath to point to c:\onhold\mplayer2.exe instead of its default setting of c:\onhold\srvany.exe it errors out with the message above.

In addition to this I created the key of Parameters between Enum and Security and set up Application with Type Of REG_SZ, and Data of c:\onhold\mplayer2.exe but it still comes up with the same error message when starting the service.

Once I can get this to launch the windows media player correctly I will alter this to point to the onhold.mp3, but just trying to get it to function at this point.

Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong. Are windows GUI apps not cabable of starting as a service object, and only console apps supported for this???

Thanks,

Dave

srvany is a stub program used to make any program a service. It essentially calls into the program specified for itself- found elsewhere in the registry.

You would need to write your own service that performs the tasks you want- starting media player when you wish and closing media player when it stops.

The problem is- Media player, even if you manage to make it into a service, will cause all sorts of problems, since services are designed to not have a User Interface at all. Thanks for your help... That makes sense now.

I will try that and see where that leads then and report back if I hit any other ISSUES for help.

Thanks
