Answer»

hello.. is ti POSSIBLE to put windows xp pro in a usb and use it in installing a computer.. and if its possible how i can i do that.. any help is appreciated.. Thanks in advance...There are a few ways to do this...it will INVOLVE some work though.
We need to know if you are doing a clean install or a repair install...
We need to know if your machine SUPPORTS booting to a USB device...
And we need to know what VERSION and what it says on the CD...

Do you not have a working CD ? ?I'm planing for a clean installation and its supports usb as a booting option. I like to install windows xp pro sp 2 to the computer. If your referring to xp installation cd yes i do have one working xp pro cd..Is the CD drive bad on the system? Wondering why not normal installation via CD?the cd drive is working properly.. I just want to know if its possible to install an xp to a computer using usb/thumb drive.. And how can i do that.?Here First

You will then have to copy the contents of your XP CD to the drive.

Solve : Windows XP acting strange?

Answer»

The first thing I noticed was that when I right click on "my computer" and then click on "manage", the computer restarts.

I ran Malwarebytes and spybot and it came up with nothing. Tried to run Kaspersky online scanner but my windows installer service isn't WORKING and it won't let me install the necessary Java plug-ins to run Kaspersky.

I tried running the System File Checker and it SAID, "files that are required for Windows to run properly must be COPIED to the DLL cache"  Then System File Checker asked me to insert my Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 CD, which I don't have because I'm using Windows XP Home Edition.  Plus the only CDs I have are factory restore disks that came with the computer.  There is no option for a repair install...Well, actually there is a way to do the repair install. You can always borrow an XP CD. It's perfectly legal and it will work - but it needs to be the same version you have installed.

As for the AV, you can download a boot time av (Avira, Avast, Bit Defender, etc), burn it to a cd and run it at boot.I think I'm just GOING to back up and reinstall...

thx anyway

Solve : won't boot up, used recovery with XP disc but am stuck at c:\windows prompt?

Answer»

Computer BOOTING up fine one day and next day comes up with boot failure,  Have gone into bios and put to boot from CD etc as suggested with XP disk, but when I get to C:\ windows prompt don't know what to do.  In Bios originally I had FLOPPY: not found, CDRom not found, SCSI not found (what is this?) and then NETwork OK and then it says insert diskette to reboot which I don't have.  Only have XP disk.  Now  I have put Floppy first boot up, then CD rom then scsi and nothing else to boot from.
Have unplugged everything from computer other than MOUSE and keyboard.  Anyhelp really appreciated.  Am using a friends laptop now with internet access but would like to get my one working and /or retrieve at LEAST my files/emails.
Just adding that unable to boot in safemode (F8) have tried giving the computer a good dusting and clean up and get to same place as before "insert boot diskette in A:".
Also just before this Novell Network Ready Firmkware has followig:
RPL ROM ADR : 0007 95cF 83E3
RPL ROM IRQ 5
RPL ROM P10 CC00
RPL ROM FFC 5
Boot failureAre you saying none of your drives are being DETECTED by the BIOS ? ?
If so a re-install will not work.
Re-installing Windows will wipe all your data.

What exactly does it say on this XP CD ? ?

You may want to unplug the machine for 5 or 10 minutes and then see if the BIOS picks up the drives.
What issues were you having that led up to this ? ?
They may provide a clue as to what's wrong...

Solve : My computer shut down itself (in less than 1 min)?

Answer»

When i switch on the pc, it enter the windows then shut down by itself (in less then 1 min)
I have to keep trying then the pc will works normally.
Using windows xp sp3. Can anyone help me?Does the same thing happen if you boot to safe mode?yes...it will onli works normally after lots of try...? pls help  mi thanksWhen was the LAST time you blew the dust out of your computer with a can of compressed air?The pc is only 6 mth old...N the inside is quite clean?I'm going to ask again. Have you booted to safe mode and if so do you have the same problem? I have a feeling you really have not tried.I have try booting in safe mode lots of time....but before i get into the windows it will restart itself again...
If i boot in NORMAL mode...it can at least got to the password screen.
I have also found some crack at the processor coolerThis is most likely the issue...
If the CPU is not damaged you can buy a replacement heatsink/fan combo...Does it just immediately cut off? Or does it say Windows is Shutting Down etc?the power shut down....but i have change the power supply....
at first was the pc CNT turn on...after some checks found out that the harddisk did not run but the cd drive can run...den i change the power supply....everytink was ok but it will turn off by itself after 1 min....but after lots of reboot i works normally Quote

I have also found some crack at the processor cooler

That is the problem. You need a new heatsink. Hopefully your CPU is still okay.It won't be if he insists on continuing to use it...er patio....wat do u mean??If you continue to use that machine with a bad/cracked heatsink you run the risk of burning up that CPU and possibly the MBoard.Maybe it's a heat sencor try putting a fan right next to it with the cover off and SEE if it stays on longer if so it might be the heat sencor.

Solve : Fastest home built computer?

Answer»

Hello i was wondering what is the fastest home buit computer you could make no a supercomputer what is the fastest home computer that would run windows and play games the fastest,    what would you build with limit less spending what is the highest ghz ram that you can have does a hardrive matter for speed??? graphics card what is the highest gb hardrive i heard of and seen 2tb hardrives for under 200$ and i heard that hitachi is plaining to make a 5 tb hardrive before 2010 and what is the highest ghz computer,     I seen one on ebay that was 5.33ghz

SHOW me you dream computer. ghz ram hardrive. ect. with what's out there. right now Describing the fastest is not likely to happen as for the minute i would post this a faster solution would become available.

For speed however at this time, I would go with the best available Dual-Quad Core CPUs for 8 cores of processing, 32GB Ram so 4GB PER core if you could balance it, solid state hard drives configured in an array to increase PERFORMANCE and for fastest read/write speeds, and for Gaming the best cards that would pair up as a SLI configuration. Motherboard would have to be top of the line to AVOID bottlenecking.I wonder what the fastest car is.

Solve : Laptop bootup problem - hangs on blinking cursor screen?

Answer»

Computer Info:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

HP
AMD Turion 64 X2 Mobile
1.61 GHz, 960 MB RAM

Total Memory Capacity: 99.2 G, slightly less than HALF of that in use.
I guess the hard drive is a Toshiba MK1234GSX

Booting up my laptop has gotten to be like turning on an old car - I need to try a few times before it finally boots up to Windows.  What happens is, I press the power button, it makes the normal noises, displays the HP logo, and then transitions to an all black screen with a cursor blinking in the upper lefthand corner.  I can hit ctrl+alt+dlt, and usually I wind up at the cursor screen again.  If I try two or three more times, the computer will boot up to Windows like normal.

I don't know if it makes any difference at all, but I am able to access the setup menu while the HP logo is displayed.  I restored the bootup order to the defaults (though I don't think it was ever changed), and sometimes when I exit setup saving changes, the computer will bootup normally, although sometimes I do still get stuck on that blinking cursor screen.

I ran Avira but it didn't find anything.  And honestly the computer runs fine as long as it doesn't get stuck with that cursor.  Here is the HiJackThis file, in case this is needed:

Is this an easy fix, or will I need to bring it in somewhere?  Is my hard drive failing?

Thanks for your help!As a first step I suggest you boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /rI ran the Check Disk and it came back clean. Not possible. You did not follow my instructions. Boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /rI don't have a Windows XP CD.  To my knowledge it is needed to access the Recovery Console.  I initiated the Check Disk scan by right-clicking the C Drive, going to Tools, clicking "Check Now," and then I check-marked both available boxes ("Automatically fix file system errors," "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors").  I then had to restart the computer for the Check Disk to initiate.  After it ran, it came back clean.Download a .iso for the recovery console: http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212 All right, I did the Check Disk again via the Recovery Console.  This time it said one or more errors were found and repaired.Okay, now that's out of the way. Do you still have the same problem? If so, have you run a complete check on your ram?I was able to turn it on two or three times without trouble, but the last time I tried to turn it on I got the blinking cursor again, and needed to restart about 3-4 times before it booted up.So after running a successful checkdisk the system booted normally a few times and then the problem came back? It's possible the hard disk is failing. But I'd still check the ram - no harm in doing so.Here is an interesting thing I have noticed.  If I leave a CD in the drive, the computer boots up fine to Windows EVERY time.  Even if I get the blinking cursor, momentarily I will receive that message giving me the option to strike any key to boot the CD.  If I ignore this message and don't boot the CD (which boots fine if I choose to), then the computer proceeds to start up normally.  Does this phenomenon do anything to reveal the cause of my bootup problems?

Thanks! Quote from: GameAngel64 on October 08, 2009, 04:02:49 PM

...Does this phenomenon do anything to reveal the cause of my bootup problems?...
Unplug the cables from the CD-drive and then see what happens. Also, you can change the boot order so the HD is at the top of the list and see if that helps.

Solve : Limited user account isn't as limited as it should be??

Answer»

Hi people

I'm new... just found this site and hope I'm posting in the correct place.

I set up my pc so I am administrator and my daughter is a Limited user.... (or so I thought)...

She can access only files that I have shared.

I thought a limited user should only be able to change their own picture and create, change/remove their own password.

However, when I log on as the limited user, I can still get into the control panel and change or look at every category.

She's not computer savvy (but is beginning to learn) so I'm PRETTY sure she hasn't changed this herself (she also can't log into my screen as she doesn't know the password).....

so... how do I stop her being able to access things that only me (the administrator) should be changing?

Thanks.

Log on as you (Admin).
Change her account GROUP to User or Guest instead of Power User.
Right-click My Computer---Left-click Manage---Select Local Users and Groups
Under User, change her account to member of User or Guest, and nothing else.
You can also control Passwords from here.Computer_Commando thankyou for replying so fast

Right-click My Computer---Left-click Manage---  ok.. no problems then.....

Select Local Users and Groups  I can't find that!

the menu says:-
computer management (local)
system tools
event viewer
shared folders
performance logs & alerts
device manager
storage
services & APPLICATIONS

If you want to prevent anyone else from accessing the control panel ... see this link, which shows how you do it (there's screenshots too!)2x3i5x  thanks for your reply and the link

still no LUCK I'm afraid......

the first instruction / screenshot tells me to start -> run, 2.) Type in GPEDIT.msc and hit Enter.

when I do this I get an error message saying "Windows cannot find gpedit.msc"

I'm not having much luck!Is this XP Home ? ?yes, xp home edition 2002 (service pack 3)Does not include gpedit...
Use the Admin Tools in Control Panel.sorry guys,

am really struggling here... am hoping it may have something to do with the fact that it's 23.17 here (UK)...... more than I just haven't got a clue what I'm doing

am going to call it a NIGHT for now... eyes way too blured at this time of night.

Thanks - I will look in again in the morning while you lot are snoring

Have a good sleep...we'll get you sorted.none of the above suggestions have worked for me...

so... what I have done for now is...

logged on as the limited user (as daughter) and removed the control panel from her start menu.

right click at start -> left click properties -> customise
Advanced tab
where it said "control panel" I clicked the box that says "don't display this item".

I feel happier now she cant access anything in the control panel now.She can still access the control panel. Open up my computer and type Control Panel in the address bar.  After looking into this further while you were asleep.... it seems there are 3rd Party tools that will add more robust control over a User acct. in XP Home...

However none were Free and i have no Home install to test on where i'm at so i'd be somewhat reluctant to recommend them...She can still access the control panel. Open up my computer and type Control Panel in the address bar.

Yes, thankyou... I realise she'll still be able to access the control panel... if she know's where to look.   But at least, for now it's hidden!

however,.. it won't be long... as 12 yr old's learn fast.

True. When I was 11 I learned how to delete files with batch. By 13 I made my first chatting program with batch.

Solve : My Windows isn't working and I'm a n00b when it comes to this stuff?

Answer»

I started up my Dell computer today and I got a blue screen that says the following...

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

SESSION5_INITIALIZATION_FAILED

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again (it did), follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed (This doesn't apply as I haven't installed anything new).

It then goes on to talk about how to remove installed hardware, but it doesn't apply to me.

Then it says:

Technical information: *** STOP: 0x000000...and it just has a list of numbers.

Then, it says "BEGINNING dump of physical memory. Physical memory dump complete. Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance.

I didn't know what to do after a couple times so I turned my computer off and turned it back on, but Windows wasn't working. I just had my desktop background with no icons and no start menu or taskbar. I could still open programs through Task Manager but I can't figure out why my Windows isn't working right.

Any help would be very much appreciated. Are you using Zone Alarm? To be honest I'm not sure what that is so I'm guessing no.Please try this. Boot to safe mode. Hav you recently plugged in any new USB device?

Okay, I know how to put it in safe mode, but how do I open msconfig?Oh, and Geek-9pm, yes, I'm using XP. I've had the computer for at least five years, and it's never done this to me before. Nah, it didn't work. The start menu didn't show in Safe Mode so I did it through Task Manager, and I still don't have a Start Menu or any of my icons in Normal Mode. Every once in a while when I restart it that blue screen pops up again. This is kinda weird.Okay, next STEP os to download Malware Bytes and run a full scan with that. Also run a full scan with your AV. If we still have a problem we may want to try a repair INSTALL. Quote from: tcaporale on October 10, 2009, 01:52:28 PM

Well, it may be that you have a fan that got stuck.
And a lot of dust has built up inside.
Also, some connections may have oxide, (dirty gunk.)  Re seat all cards, connectors and cords or cables inside the unit. Type in wireless and hit enter.     Are you saying there is no "Wireless Network Connection" icon when you go "Start" -> "Control Panel" -> double-click "Network Connections" icon?

Is so, see Driver Installation Issues.

Or
see Troubleshooting Network Problems - Wireless pdf document produced by Lewis and Clark college.

Under item 3 of the "Check your network software settings" section:

Solve : cannot start windows normally?

Answer»

my pc cannot "start windows normally". this is what appeared on the screen:
"we apologize for the inconvenience, but windows did not start succesfully. a recent hardware or software change might have CAUSE this..."

this trouble appeared after i assembled the harddisk into another pc. but it was fine when i put it back into the first/previous pc.

thanks for helping. You need to provide a LOT more information. Exactly what did you do and EXACTLY what happens now?i have two cpu and two harddisks.
i have installed the windows os on both the hdd from the first cpu. then i installed/assembled one of the hdd into the second cpu and i encountered the problem to start windows normally.
i was pretty sure i have all the hooks put correctly.
THANK you.Let me see if I UNDERSTAND. You installed Windows on a hd on one computer and then took that hd and put it in another computer? And you expected it to work? Is that correct?

First, you are violating the EULA - one OS CD, one computer.

Second, unless the two computers are EXACTLY identical, you cannot do what you want to do anyway. As you are finding out, the OS will not load on the second system. You need to install the OS on the HD while it is in the system you want to use.yes. you are correct. that was what my problem is.
i have tried to install the os from the second cpu but still unable to start up normally. is there anything to do with other hardware problem?
thank you. What other hardware problem?i have no idea yet. the os installation process didn't run well from the second cpu. so i put the hdd into the first cpu and the os installation did run well. i am wondering what was the problem is?
thank you.The problem is that when the OS installs it records information about the system hardware to a file (wpa.dbl). The OS is then specific to that system. You CANNOT take a disc with Windows from one system and expect it to boot on another.i see. thank you. i have tried to install the os from other different cd. but the problem still acting the same. does it relate to RAM or power supply trouble? i am just having problem to first boot from the cd room. and this cd drive seems the only way to install the os. thanks for helping.Either I don't understand you or you don't understand me. You need to purchase a copy of XP for each system and install it directly to that system. If you are doing ANYTHING else we cannot help you.thankssure

Solve : computer won't go beyond the Gateway logo screen?

Answer»

I have a Gateway omputer with windows xp. My HUSBAND uses this computer so it doesn't get updated much. LAST night I did updates and it was to shut down after they completed. This morning the computer would not go beyond the Gatewat logo SCREEN. I tried booting from the operating disc and I still could not go beyond the Gateway logo. I took it apart and cleaned it with air and made surte that nothing was loose. I also tried taking out one of the RAM chips (there are two 256 mb modules) and put it back together and tried starting it that way. Still nothing. I had this computer restored by the Geek Squad last year. Is there ANYTHING that I can do or has this computer bit the dust?Try booting to the XP CD and choosing the SECOND repair option (do a repair install).

Solve : Computer are creating some weird folders and files?

Answer»

My computer are creating some weird folders and files In C, D, E (D and E are virtual hard drives) It CAME after a update for Norton and norton said It was a virus on high risk now I'm not so sure of that...

But I keep getting SYSTEM Volume Information and RECYCLER in D and E. In C I get those + ntldr.bak and some more of those... When I first saw them I deleted the files except System Volume Information who I can't delete and those ntldr.bak tock me a hour to find out how to start the computer

So anyone can give me a hint to get things back to normal?System Volume Information folders contain your RESTORE points (System Restore) and Recyler is Norton's Recycle BIN. Ntldr.bak is the bakcup of your user profile - DON"T TOUCH ANY OF THESE.Yea I got that on the hard way >-< But Can't I get them to be gone? It's the first time I see those, so somehow I should be able to make them... Invisible? Hide system files & folders (Windows Explorer - Tools - Folder Options - View - ....)Ok...  how to make them invisible without disable that...  3rd party software... How do I make them look like the did for 5 days agoThey are created by the OS on every drive hooked up...
Ignore them as they are neccessary for your system to run properly and take up little or no space...Well the are very very very ingoing and it should be a way to make them like they where beforeYes indeed, they are quite ingoing.quite? I go in to the hard drive more then 80 times a day so they are very ingoing... I will get them to be invisible on the right way or at the wrong way... (wrong way is not to delete them)Hide hidden system folders...it's that simple.well then I can't see all of the hidden things and the hidden things are like Ice-cream on a sunny hot day Then you have a clear choice...Ice Cream...or no Ice Cream. That's just pure evil... But I take alternative C, 3rd party software.

If you want to have your home work done get a 3rd party software, If you want your neighbour killed get a 3rd party software, If you want Ice-Cream and hiden folder get a 3rd party software.

I called dell and they said it was a hard drive problem he called and they said it was a windows xp problem. I hope that some one can help me fix his computer. In laymans terms and I am just a pretty new begginer myself ALSO he doesn;t have the start up disc that came with the computer any help would be greatly appreciatedBoot to your XP CD and choose the first "repair" option (press "R"). That will take you to the recovery console. Once there, RUN chkdsk /r. It will take a while to complete - let it finish. Remove the XP CD and reboot. Post back and let us know if that helped.thanks for the fast reply ALLEN but my son doesn;t have the start up disks is there anything else we can do?According to Dell, Dimension 4100 did not come with WinXP; Win98, WinME, or Win2k.You can download the recovery console .iso file from http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212

Then you have to burn it to a cd and boot to it. Alternatively, you can borrow an XP CD (it has to be the same version you are running (home or pro) and boot to it and to GET to the recovery console. Sorry but I'm not sure what else to tell you to do

/The best thing to do would be to call DELL at 1-800-456-3355 and ask them for recovery discs that came with his computer. You will need the express service code, which is a 7-digit alphanumeric code LOCATED on a sticker on the back of the desktop or bottom of the LAPTOP. They will usually mail these to you for FREE within 3-5 business days DEPENDING on your GEOGRAPHIC location.

Solve : "the specified module could not be found" ?????????????????????????

Hi - - My name is Valerie,
I would be so grateful if ANYONE OUT THERE can HELP me figure out why this message started popping up whenever I TYPE in an address.  The message is "the specified module COULD not be found"  I can get around it by typing the address in my Yahoo SEARCH box and then clicking on the address form the list provided.  However, at times, when I am already at a website and I try to go somewhere within that website, it will often times pop up again " the specified module could not be found".  At this point I am usually just *censored*-Out-Of-Luck.  Very frustrating !!! Can't get where I want to go !!! And I have know idea why this started happening.
OMIGOD - -  I would REALLY  appreciate it if someone can help me with this.
              THANK-YOU  THANK-YOU  THANK-YOU  for your TIME.
My email address is [email protected]   {Just in case I can't figure out how to access the answer in this forum should anyone try to help}  Traditionally I have a hard time figuring out how to navigate around these forums - but am trying to learn.         THANX AGAIN  val

email addy removed to prevent SPAM.1) NEVER post your email address on a public forum. There are "bots" that scour forums looking for email addresses and sell them to spammers.

2) You need to start by ruling out malware. Run a full system scan with your AV utility AND with either Malware Bytes and/or Super AntiSpyware. Please report back after doing both. What browser are you using? I suggest re-installing your browser. That may be your solution, otherwise, it could be an infection so you should try the ^^^ post.

Solve : My notebook didn't work even in normal condition??

Answer»
Hi, I'm using Acer aspire 4720 laptop with Intel Core2duo 1.5GHz processor, 1 gb ram, I had installed Windows Xp service pack 2 on my notebook. Whenever i'm playing games (Especially Need for speed Most wanted game) it didn't respond quickly it strucks for sometime and it plays the game very slowly, after sometime it plays in normal speed. My computer is well configured to play the game and no viruses or worms are present in my computer and it is up to date Can you tell me the reason behind this ?

I tried the following things
(1) Installed bitdefender total security 2009 and scanned for any viruses, worms, rootkits, malwares and adwares and i put very high protection level in it.
(2) Uninstalled all unnecessary softwares and cleaned the temporary files from all locations
(3) Installed TuneUp Utilities 2009 and applied the speedup processes, registry cleaning, disk defragmentation.... etc
(4) Deleted unnecessary startup programs

After performing the above operations my windows DRIVE has more than 15gb space free and I installed the game.... but it works slow....

and also i tried the following
Uninstalled all the softwares EVEN antivirus also. Only the game with necessary files (.NET framework files and windows Installer) is installed but the RESULT is same.

Finally i did the following thing
I formatted my entire harddisk and installed the fresh copy of WindowsXp service pack 2 and installed the gameCD(It is genuine yes!!!) but the result is same. My computer does not give the boost to the game.
One thing I found that whenever I'm doing a task like scanning, creating disks (using nero), playing games My processor usage WENT to 100%, why I don't know (Everytime I Checked it even after formatting)

Please help me in solving my problem ?1) DO NOT RUN YOUR SYSTEM WITHOUT AN ANTI VIRUS PROGRAM INSTALLED AND RESIDENT
2) Open Task Manager to the processes tab. Sort on the CPU column with highest usage at the top (double-click on the CPU title at the top of the column)
3) When the processor spikes, look at task manager to see which process is using the cpu. Thanks allan for your support.

Earlier i tried all the things you had mentioned. The game itself is using about 49-65% usage of cpu and one other process system.exe is using 35-51% usage of cpu. Almost 98% is used by the game.

I found that whenever I'm playing the game my processor's and harddisk's temperature increases beyond the limit. At the beginning the temperature of harddisk is 42C and processor's is 48C, after playing game for 10min they went to 53C(harddisk)  and 75-85C(processor) and the system is hanging then.

Can I decrease their temperature by any means ?
If so, can I increase my system speed ?

Everything on the pc works fine.  I ran mbam and no errors.  However, the computer doesnotshut down  properly, it stays hung at the 'windows is now shutting down screen.'

Wondering what t o do
Has it always done this or did it just start? What led up to it? What happens if you do a clean boot and then shut down?MAYBE the file system needs to be repaired..

Click Start, click RUN, type:  chkdsk /r     click on OK..    Windows will ask you if you want to run the scan on the next boot, type  "y" press enter and restart your computer...

If your computer hangs and will not restart, hold down the power button on the computer until it shuts down...  Wait 30 sec and turn it back on....Windows will then scan your file system for errors and attempt to repair them, if any are FOUND... Quote from: EEVIAC on October 12, 2009, 03:19:47 PM

this has been going on for almost a month now.

I turn the computer off manually and when I turn it back on it doesthe system file check.  No errors

Makes me think theres some virus or something THATS running in the background, but I went into task manager, and every process looks legit.  My last resort would be to do a system recovery after doing a backup because system r estore doesnt work due to shutdown problems

Is there anything else I can try

Please answer all of my question. Quote from: Allan on October 12, 2009, 03:21:44 PM
You're guessing - and it's a bad guess.

Whatever....it's possible that the file system was the CAUSE and there's nothing wrong with a process of elimination, especially if it doesn't cost anything and can be done easily... No, that was CLEARLY not the problem. But okay - let's not argue about it.allan:

last t hing was there was maybe a power outage and then this shutdown problem started.  what do you mean by do a clean boot?  Okay. Please open msconfig and choose: selective startup (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Once you are in Windows, try to shut down. Does everything close normally?YES, finally.  But now how do I know which services to reenable
Okay. Now go to the startup tab in msconfig and disable half of the items and reboot. If the problem is gone, start enabling the disabled items one at a time, rebooting after each, until the problem recurs and you'll have identified the culprit. If it is not gone, reverse the enabled/disabled items....... I think you get the idea. If you prefer something other than msconfig, download Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. It's a very simple startup manager.wow cool thanks
You're welcome. Please post back and let us know what the offending app is - we might be able to fix things completely.

And by the way, since you did have an anomalous shutdown with the power loss it might not be a bad idea to follow EEVIAC's suggestion and run checkdisk (though the right way to run it is to boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r).no actually there was no offending app.  I did what you said,  disabled the startup apps, and then went one by one rebooting each time and shutting down again.  The weird thing is , I disabled all the apps, and then finally got around to enabling all the apps since the computer was acting properly on  each reboot and shutdown.

Now there is a NEW problem.  I am trying to connect this wirelessly to a router, which already has another wired connection on it.  The wired one connects easily but this one which is wireless detects the network, but it keeps saying 'acquiring ip address' but finally ends up saying  'limited or no connectivity'  Why doesit do that and how to fix it?  I have service pack 3 by the way.

Solve : My computer keeps restarting before it gets to the desktop?

Answer»

i have a windows xp home edition. after i deleted some viruses and restarted my computer it now keeps restarting before it gets to the desktop. even in all safe modes and others, and i got the laptop as a gift from SOMEONE else and dont have a windows xp boot cd. if ANYBODY knows how to fix this please reply! thank youReboot. As soon as the system gets past the POST, start to tap the F8 key. You will get to a screen with several boot options - choose the one that says: Disable Restart on Error. Now reboot. You should see a blue screen error message. Post that ENTIRE message here.

Also, you can download a boot time anti virus utility (Avira, Avast, Bit Defender), create a bootable cd, and run that at system start.actually when i disabled it the first time it just restarted so i pressed control alt delete and it didnt restart it brought me the task manager,  but no desktop or start menu. i can run some things now like the internet but somehow there are still viruses and it has disabled my system restore. now i can only run things off of task manager and im afraid if i turn the computer off it wont start up again. o and by the way it was like 3 rouge antivirus protection fakes that messed my computer up. like window police pro, total security 09 and another.1) If you want to make sure your system is free of viruses, download a boot time AV disc utility (Avira, Avast, BitDefender), BURN it to disc, boot to it and run the scan.

2) If you want to start all over, go into the bios and make sure your cd is at the TOP of the boot order. Then insert an XP CD in the drive and reboot. The install process will begin. Be sure to choose the option to format the drive before installing the OS.How about remove your hard disk and slave it to other computer that has updated virus security and scan your hard disk there.. Huh?

I'm telling you - it must be a full moon.a boot-time scan, by booting from a disc, is just as effective as one by slaving the drive. And doesn't require any hardware changes or modification of jumpers.

how do i use it?

Just unzip it and double CLICK on the .exe file.  When you run it, it will install the latest patches for the game (most likely into the necessary FOLDER).

After the install is finished, restart your computer and try running the game again...

You might not even have to unzip it, just double click on the .zip file, then double click on the .exe file, to run it...

Thanx a bunch eeviac,i got winzip and winrar,il see what happens.

Virtual Memory Available  : 2056504
Virtual Memory Total  : 2097024

I have defrag my system and found a larger number of files that were still FRAGMENT. Can these files be deleted without hurting anything thus giving me more space on my hard drive? Some of he files are duplicates in everything except perhaps they MAY be one letter off in the name. What is the extention "ost" and  are they used . I have only 8.8 G Free space (23%).
These are some of the programs: Defender: CCleaner: Defraggler: Malwarebytes; McAfee:.ost files are MS Outlook files i believe...If CCleaner is not deleting them, delete NOTHING else.  23% free space is okay, however, if you intend on adding large amounts of programs or data, you'll have to purchase additional storage.kingsnite

If a defragger fails to defrag a file it is probably because the file is too large and/or free space is too small.  Another good reason is that the file is in use.  Deleting any such a file is certain to cause damage.

I think you have a fundamental misconception.

A defragger will report as fragments how many discontinuities occur in the disk storage of a file.
Each discontinuity has zero effect upon data quality - it only degrades speed of access.
Windows Explorer still allows you to delete the files, even though it is fragmented,
but it does not allow you to select and delete individual fragments.

NTFS file fragments are generally as above, and should not be deleted
FAT32 file fragments are generally as below. and may be deleted because data is already damaged.

Windows 98 etc would often break up a file into fragments and forget the order of use. I think on reboot it was SCANDISK that would find the debris and provide a new file name for each bit, such as File0001.CHK, File0002.CHK, File0003.CHK etc, but did not know where they came.  Deleting these *.chk fragments did no harm - the file was already destroyed and unusable.  Alternatively with a lot of patience one could inspect the CONTENTS and just possibly with luck perform copy and paste operations to rebuild a file.

I believe Patio's expression of confusion is not a misunderstanding of what was said but more or less disbelief at the lack of useful content within what was said, much in the same way people might utter "what!" when they are bequeathed information of a surprising nature. Such a REACTION is of course not to be taken literally as a request to restate the information or as a statement of misunderstanding of said information but rather a expression of disbelief. This is in general expressed to those within earshot by the inflection which "what" or "huh" or any number of SIMILAR words might be given, often of a exclamatory or questioning nature.

Solve : Migrate Windows XP to new CPU?

Answer»

Does anyone KNOW how to fix the blue screen error that is created when you replace a motherboard that was an AMD that fried with an INTEL Motherboard CPU running Windows XP Pro?

Looking for a way to make this system run again after the motherboard died and it starts to boot Windows with the logo then it blue screens and reboots the system.

I know that the hard drive is fine also because the fried AMD was healthy enough to boot up, but when the system warmed up it would LOCK up tight. The AMD Processor had a blister on it on the waffer and I am amazed that it booted at all.

It looks like Windows needs to be told to use an INTEL CPU instead of the AMD that it had.

Thanks for suggestions to get this back up and running.Do a repair install (Boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option).

Ideally you should do a clean install after changing mobo's, but a repair install should work.Hello Allan,

I tried that and followed the instructions as well as checked out http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

At the blue Windows installation menu I pick R for repair. Then when it starts the repair console I pick 1 for "1: C:\Windows" the installation location, then hit the ENTER key at the Enter password prompt as administrator there is no password and MS states to just pres the enter key. It then places me at C:\Windows> and I am not sure what to run next to repair this installation. I ran FIXBOOT and it ran and then I RESTARTED it and still it gets to the windows logo and hits a blue screen with a hex dump error code and reboots.

So not sure what I need to do next to repair windows. Attached is a screenshot of the screen I am at....

* I tried running d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons but it wouldnt run from the OEM Windows XP Pro CD. And so I navigated to the CD and saw that all the files are compressed and tried to make a directory called i386 at the C:\ and it stated Access Denied so it appears to be that the C:\ drive is write protected.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]You picked the 1st "R", not the 2nd "R" as Allan said.

You don't want the Recovery Console, following these instructions:

Would have been nice if Microsoft called it R1 & R2.
BTW, my legit Corporate Edition has no Repair options.Heh yah or actually send you to the real repair at the get go vs burrying it in like that.

Attached is an AVI (in a zip file to be within the 700k max attachment spec of CH) of the crash i was having, as well as a screenshot of the repair process, that I would have expected to state that its repairing...looks no different than normal XP installation. Maybe this wil work! Fingers Crossed!

Nope, that's what it looks like.  I've done it many times.  You'll have to immediately perform Windows Update, hope that's SP3 and not SP2.  There's about 10 new ones coming tomorrow, 2nd Tuesday of every month.Hey.. Many Thanks To All... Its back up and running now on an INTEL CPU...SWEET

Now I just need to check to see if all the programs still work. Not sure if it keeps the registry exactly intact in regards to software installed or if it just repairs the Windows System portion of the registry through the process.

This OEM XP Pro CD I have is SP1 so I have tons of updates, but at least back up and running..   All programs and preferences should remain intact after a repair install, but you do have to reinstall all MS Updates. BTW, if I were you I'd still consider copying all critical data to off-disc media and doing a clean install. It's just the preferred thing to do after installing a new mobo.

Anyway, glad you're up and running Here

Solve : Microsoft Power Point Slide Show Problem?

Answer»

I have a Windows XP Professional System configured with three displays. I want to be able to display an animated Microsoft Power Point Slide SHOW on each display and have them execute simultaneously. The problem is that when I select a different instance of he Power Point application the Slide Show pauses. APPARENTLY Microsoft Power Point Slide Show only executes when the specific instance of the application is the active window. I can use the [Alt]+[Tab] key sequence to SWITCH between instances of the Power Point application. Is there a way to automate this application selection sequence, which would enable each instance of the application to execute briefly and thereby give the appearance of executing simultaneously.

Is there anything I can do to automate this process or is there a way to have the instances of the application execute even though it is not the active window?Microsoft Powerpoint is developed to explain something visually to the people, it is not the movie to play automatically even when it is not in active. So it works whenever it is active that it has to show something to someone usable information. So in my opinion it is not possible for powerpoint.
If you want to play your animated powerpoint even when in deactive mode, convert them into any movie mode such as .WMV, .avi or someother and play them. They will play simultaneously.Thank you for your help. I now understand and really appreciate your assistance.

What are you talking about? Some people never turn off their systems, and that's just fine. And you SAY you think he's had a virus for a month so he should get a new power supply?other then reboots for updates I leave my computer on for years. He MAY need a new power supply but it's not becasue he left a machine on for a month.

maybe this is a power supply issue. try to replace it and test that to another computer (if you have)..

Solve : XP Computer won't boot in safe mode?

Answer»

While using my computer, I accidentally unplugged the computer. I can not get it to boot up now.  I have tired EVERY option:
safe mode
safe mode w/ networking
safe mode w/ command prompt
last know good configuration
start windows normally

I've tried F10 and gone into reset defaults settings, but that doesn't do anything either.
Everything I try takes me back to the BLACK screen that lists the above options.
I can hear the hardrive working, but it's like it can't find it's way.
A little help, please??Have you got a XP cd?.Thanks for replying!  I have the restore CD - brand is emachines.  Will this help?  I don't think I have a Windows XP CD but I'll keep looking.
Thank you If you use that restore CD ALL your data and programs will be gone...
They are DESIGNED to take a machine back to Day One status...
Anything installed after that and any work you have will be wiped out.

One thing you can try:
Unolug the power.
Disconnect either the power or data cable that goes to the hard drive.
Toggle the reset switch on the back of the PSU a few times.
Plug in and power up the machine...let it sit for about 5 mins and power down.
Repeat this a few times.

Then re-connect the HDD and see if it boots properly.I will give it a try-thanks!  I have seen a message pop up before it takes me back to the black screen that says no signal detected.  COULD that have something to do with it?
Thanks again!Sounds like your monitor cable might have come loose or stressed when you accidently unplugged...or the strain has moved your video card.No luck on the powering down suggestion.  I checked the monitor cable.  If there was a problem with that, would the black screen still show up on the monitor?  When I say black scrren, I mean the one that has the options to enter safe mode, last know good config, etc.
I hear my hard drive turn on for about 5 seconds and then it quits.
Any other thoughts?
Allan, if I'm able to get an XP Cd, what will that do?

He's not getting a reboot - he's not getting past the boot option screen. That is correct- I don't have the option of disabling restarts on system failure.

Good news- I did find a Windows XP Operating System cd.  No what?

Thanks!  How to use the Windows recovery console
At the Recovery Console, type chkdsk /r, then hit Enter-key

Read procedure carefully, so you don't do an install by mistake.Just boot to the XP CD and choose the first repair option (press 'R'). Once you are in the recovery console do as CC suggests and run chkdsk /r. It will take a while to complete - let it do so.I've run the chkdsk /r and it has finished.  I'm now at c:\>

What do I enter here?  I rally am a greenhorn type EXIT and press ENTER. And keep your fingers crossed

Solve : Internet browser size?

Answer»

How can I keep the browser size at 100%What browser? What OS?  Do you mean text viewed in your browser, or browser window size?
Windowes XP, size of browser, microsoft windows.Do you know how to use the Maximize button?Internet browser, Windows browser? What do you mean "keep it" at 100%?When I open the browser it goes to 125% I want it to open at 100%.Again, what browser? Internet Explorer, Firefox, what?  And, what version of the browser do you have?

Do you know how to change the size when your browser is open?I've never seen a browser open larger than the screen size - is that the only window that does that? And have you used the MAXIMIZE button (middle button in the upper right corner)? That should set the window to 100% screen size.If I change it to 100% and open a new site it changes back to 125%First, how about telling us everything at once instead of making us drag the information out of you? The quality of the help you get is in direct proportion to the quality of the information you provide.

You should do a full scan of your system with your av (with the current definitions) AND with either Malware Bytes or Super AntiSpyware. Let's see if that helps.deplee, again, you're clouding the issue. In a PREVIOUS post, I asked whether you're talking about text/font size in your browser, or the browser window.  You said you were talking about window size.  But, as Allan said, you can not have greater than 100% window size.  In other words, if your browser window is maximized, it is using 100% of your monitor/screen space.  Obviously, your window size can not exceed your monitor/screen size, or 100%.

On the other hand, text size that you see in your browser window can be varied, and can be greater than the NORMAL size.

And, I ASK again, do you know how your Maximize button works? Not talking about font/text. Browser window size is what I mean.As I said: Quote

you can not have greater than 100% window size.  In other words, if your browser window is maximized, it is using 100% of your monitor/screen space.

If you disagree with this, post a screen shot to show us exactly what you mean.On the lower right hand side of the screen it shows 125% WITCH is the screen size. How do I post you a screen shot? That's Quote from: deplee on October 13, 2009, 12:40:56 PM

Solve : Logon when starting Windows XP?

Answer»

This seems like it should be a simple issue but I can't find any information through search that applies directly. This is not an issue that keeps me from logging on but it is perplexing and has persisted for so long that I don't remember if it was ever not so.

To the issue: I am using XP with all the updates.  This is home office computer so I don't have password set to log on. When I turn on my computer I get the log on screen with this MESSAGE in a window over the TOP of the log on window: "The system could not log you on. Make sure user and domains are correct then type password again. Letter in password must be typed in the correct case."  The window has OK as choice.  When I click OK, log on proceeds and windows loads.

As I said this does not keep me from using windows XP but am wondering if this is NORMAL for this message to come up. If a password is not set for log on why doesn't windows just start up without this message.

Not earth shaking issue but if anyone can shed some light on it I would appreciate.

Thanks
Download Tweak UI 2.1.
Install it, then:  Under Logon---Autologon, check logon automaticallyThanks, I will give it a try. I tried it and there was no change in log on window.  I did not provide a user name or password since I don't want to restrict log on for this computer.  Is that necessary for logging on automatically? You cannot log on without a user name, but you don't need a password.  Left-click Start to see the current user name.Yes, I see my user name.  But nothing has changed in the log in screen. Still getting the same can't log you on error message as before. Tweak UI doesn't seem to have had any effect.  One thing interesting happened the next time I logged on.  My background picture did not come up and my desk top did not have the same icons as before. Also the launch bar was not WORKING. I used system RESTORE to get back to proper log in.

Looks like I will just have to live with it.

Thanks for your help.Something got corrupted with your logon.  Create a new one (with new user name) and set it up the way you want.

I am using windowsXP home.Last month i found that I found that in my Drive C I was left with just 18% of 19.53 GB and that was slowing down my works. With the help from a friend I could remove many unwanted programes and gain upto 6GB.But during the course of a month thereafter for no specific reason 5 to 10 GB is consumed whenever I browse.I down load nothing in the process of browsing.I always watch carefully how much is consumed in every process.Even then I lose disc space.I very often do disc cleaning and try to restore space. Please guide me.  Have you ever joined a "sharing" web site?
That is a site where you let other people use your  commuter to exchange files.

What Anti-Vitus software are you using?my laptop is in my exclusive use and control. No juniors around to meddle withit. My wife doesn't know computing.I have a paid version of Norton.I do not suspect any FOUL play.I do not play games or enter any WEBSITES for having a "look".I do extremely docile browsing.I am a senior citizen.I have a software called Wavepad Master's Edition", a sound processing software(paid version) for years now and is using it often.I have the software in C Drive.Whenever I want to record music I use "WavePad Sound EDITOR".I store the recordings in D Drive.Sometimes I'll have to process the music files from .wav to .MP3.During such times the subject file loads into C Drive from D.After process when i close it, gets back to D Drive by default(by preference).During these times I noticed loss of disk space. There should not be any.The original music file & the processed must go back to D drive and it goes,No doubt. But I notice a loss of up to 100 MB.Sometimes I notice the space recovering slowly.Of late it is not.I use "picasa3".My pic files are in D.Sometimes   I load a folder of pics from D to picasa.I find loss of disc space but it should not be as the original files are still stored in  D and only a copy is getting loaded in picasa3.These loads shouldn't be reducing disc space.I suspect no foul play from virus, worms or the likes.I must be doing  some mistake in my computing.I am a novice to computing. If you are reading it,I have already consumed lots of your TIME.Thank you. Please guide.  have you tried Disk Cleanup? Your sound program likely STORES the files in the temporary directory while processing; and might not be deleting them.I have done disc clean up,defrag etc.I don't share files.I am now extremely careful about every process I do looking at the disk space usage.I have sufficient disk space in Drives D & E.Can I move the space to C Drive? How to go about it?With in a short time my C drive may starve of Disk space.I may encounter problems of slow boot or hangs. Please help me with good ideas. , , , , .What about your My Documents folder?  Do you have a lot of files in it?  Your My Documents folder could be moved to D or E.Check System Restore (System Volume Information Folder) - most likely culprit - uses A LOT of space. Also Temporary Internet Files Folder, Recycle Bin, Temp folder.

You can use a 3rd party app to reapportion your partitions.can you suggest some third party apps which I can use to reapportion partitions in my laptop's disc space.I do not have any idea abt such apps. Please help.Acronis Disc Director is an excellent utility, but it's not free. A good free partition manager is Easeus (http://www.partition-tool.com/)

Solve : moving pic from my pictures to a memory stick?

Answer»

When trying to move a photo from my pictures to my memory stick I get the option "send to" when I click on the photo. One of the places I am prompted to send the pic is to my memory stick. So far so good. The problem is I  cannot send to pic to the folder I created to recieve it. The pic just ends up floating in the memory stick unattached to any folder. Can anyone help?

Thank you everyone for your suggestions.... What I finally did was click on a pic in My Pictures and copy it (once I knew this was working I could SIMPLY move them). Then I went to My Computer and opened my memory stick, highlighting the appropriate folder. I put one pic in with control V and thereafter opened the folder and put all subsequent pics in with the enter key. Windows made the job easy by providing me with on screen help; a box that allowed me to simply use the enter key. If this explanation is confusing you can give it a try to see what I mean. When I was done I returned to My Pictures to delete what now resided in my memory stick.

Thanks again to everyone.I like to drag and drop files into those drives. Have you tried that?Even better, drag and drop with the right mouse button and select copy here. I agree with the above two posts. However, if you want the folder to appear in your "send to" context menu, copy the folder to: \Documents & Settings\username\SendtoActually if the folder exists on the stick you should be able to clik on the stik initially and then see the existing folders...then clik on the desired folder.Have a nice day.Sigh....Welcome to the board tautog.

Just wandering why you replied with your thanks, and the solution you found, by editing your original post 19 hours - and 6 replies later instead of clicking the "Reply" button at the bottom of this thread and posting it in chronological order?  I'm just asking because I didn't know whether or not you are familiar with the location of that Reply button.

Also, thanks Allan for your reply:

This worked fine for me. I learn something new every day around here.

Solve : editing pdf newsletter?

Answer»

I want to edit a pdf newsletter which is emailed to me. (Edit for spelling, grammar, layout, picture cropping etc)
Then I want to save it & send it back to the person who creates the newsletter
Properties: Application Corel DRAW Version 11:0
           Corel PDF engine version11.633
PDF Version 1.3

I’ve TRIED OPEN Office, but it moves everything about.

Suggestions for what PROGRAM to use which would be reasonable as everything is done for free as it is a non PROFIT organization ( I will have to buy software at my expense.) I’m currently emailing needed changes by page, COLUMN, paragraph, with questions/ suggestions re layout & it’s time consuming etc.

Thank you,

Solve : CD ROM makes hard drive undetectable?

Answer»

Desktop w/xp (ddr) and firefox. Need help narrowing down my pc prob . when i plug in cd rom? wont boot up. unplug cd? boots up fine! bios says "no hard DRIVE detected". It is not cd rom as ive tried several verified functional cd roms. tried all possible component connection plug in variations. replaced all wire leads. replaced power supply. So i think ive narrowed prob down to hard drive or motherboard yes?  :-\Can anyone out their help me pin point this problem?

PS all said components were functional together at one time. tho its been a while, cant remember exactly why i unplugged cd and floppy. think i changed towers or power supply or something like that Check you jumper settings. Not clear what you mean.
With NO CD-Drive present, the system is normal. Is that true?

Are both Hard Drive and CD-Drive the standard PATA type?
Or are either or both SATA, serial ATA devices.
This is an important detail

Is this a new computer? HOMEMADE?
Was it alright a few weeks ago?
Have you had any other recent problems

Best grues, from what information you have given,is the mother board is at the end of its useful life. Does the motherboard support SATA?

Answer to first question is Yes, With no cd rom present? system boots up normal.

Computer is homemade but fairly new.
Muthaboard-('06 ECS mdl#P4M800Pro-M)Intel pentium4  supports SATA LAN & DDR/DD2 w/700 mg of RAM

HD-('08 Maxtor 80G) and supports PATA

CD-('98 sony)  label says ATAPI

Power Supply-('08ArrowMax 450W)

OH! now i sorta remember what happened. Computer was working fine, including cd rom This I'm sure of as I played Tiger Woods and also installed some hardware using manufactures disk.
It was time to PERFORM routine maintenance. So I disconnected power leads and thoroughly cleaned unit using compressed air.
After said cleaning I couldn't get machine to boot up. It was a nightmare. But after several days of trying everything humanly possible. I eventually got working by simply removing and replacing RAM sticks. Problem solved!. Booted up, everything worked fine. BUT! At that time I only had HD hooked up. No cd rom or floppy present. Well I was so happy to have my pc back and to afraid of messing something up again. I just left cd disconnected. Until a month ago when I needed cd rom but couldn't get to work. That brings us to this point.

Note: tried changing jumper configuration

Are you using a single cable to connect both HD and CD?
If yes, try swapping the connectors around. i.e. the one currently connected to the HD, connect it to the CD, and connect the other one to the HD.
NOTE: It is BETTER to use separate cables (controllers) to connect HDs and CDs.
Replace the IDE cables with brand new ones.

Solve : How to change computer name???

Answer»

I'm not sure if it's called the computer name or something different. My computer is showing a name called "Nick" in several AREAS that I want to change.

My full computer name is Patrick
Windows is registered to Patrick
and in my regedit the registered owner name is Patrick, but I'm still coming across a "nick" that I cannot figure out how to change.

I have C:\Documents and SETTINGS\Nick.NICK-MAIN, but in my control pannel the only user is Patrick,
Also C:\Documents and Settings\NICK~1~NIC, they are unable to delete

anyone know what I'm missing or have any advice?go to START then go to my computer right click go to properties then change the name in there under computer nameThat's not the problem. In control panel/users, the only name on there is Patrick as an ADMINSTRATOR,

but everything seems linked to a 'nick-main ' and 'nick'.. I'm not sure how to change that and whereI meant right click on properties.I already stated that my comptuer name is Patrick, thats under my computer/system properties/computer name.. I've changed it there,  there is something else that is taking a 'nick' and 'nick-main'Are you saying you want to change your username (the primary user folder in \docs & settings)? If that's not what you are asking you need to be clearer. EXACTLY what is it you want to change? Be as specific as you can."I have C:\Documents and Settings\Nick.NICK-MAIN, but in my control pannel the only user is Patrick,
Also C:\Documents and Settings\NICK~1~NIC, they are unable to delete

anyone know what I'm missing or have any advice?"

I'm trying to change this, I put it in the original topic and pointed that I have the computer name as Patrick and user name as Patrick,

if I knew where the information was to change, then I would easily change it, the only things I really know is that I have C:\Documents and Settings\Nick.NICK-MAIN <-- that will not change or delete, everything is defaulted on the name nick, my command prompt, my documents, etc

and for a little background, I originally built the computer, had it for awhile, gave it to someone named "nick" well he is a criminal now and no longer talk to him, but I DISAPPROVE of the things he has done and would like to get this changed because its a reminder everytime I see it..

You're rambling and it's not helping.

Is \documents and settinst\nick.nick-main a folder or a file? If it's a folder, what is in it?C:\Documents and Settings\Nick.NICK-MAIN

is a folder, it has other folders such as: application data, cookies, desktop, favorites, local settings, my documents,

I'm logged in as user Patrick, and I can't find anywhere that there should be a user "nick" or anything labeled nick to change, also the folders are unable to delete or simply renameOkay. And there is no user folder named Patrick - is that correct? And the system is using Nick.NICK-MAIN as the primary user name - is that correct?

If so, you cannot change the name of that folder. Period. But you CAN create a new user account with any name you like.Create a new user, copy all your documents and desktop stuff, then delete your old account. correct, there is no user folder named Patrick, however I am logged in as "Patrick" and it is the only user on the computer which is the administratorWell, it seems that at some point during the installation the system picked up NICK as the primary user. That's what you're stuck with. If everything is working okay I'd forget about it.thanks Helpmeh, that worked, much appreciated

Allen.. no offense but if you don't have advice for it, just don't post..  I found your replies more rude than anything Quote from: Allan on October 15, 2009, 04:49:25 PM

Solve : dell inspiron 6000 laptop?

Answer»

I need to download the drivers for this computer.  I went to the dell site to get the drivers for the computer, but Im not sure what to download for network controller.  I also need to download the driver for a wireless connection, but here also Im not sure which one to download, theres so many of them to choose.

I had downloaded and installed the Intel driver for the PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection, which is what I think the computer had before I deleted the driver, but this time around I cant get it to work.

So which drivers do I need
Did you reinstall the operating system or simply delete the drivers? If you just deleted them, try doing a system restore.

If you just did a clean install then can you give US your service tag number?Won't they provide you the Drivers CD ? If so BETTER to go through it.

Otherwise you need to provide more INFORMATION about your device. Here is your Dell link most suitable to your post. Try it.

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WW1&catid=5&dateid=-1&impid=-1&osl=EN&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=INS_PNT_6000&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=&scanSupported=False&scanConsent=Falsejj:  No I didnt do a clean reinstall.  The computer was running real slow, and so I did the mbam thing which identified a lot of viruses, a few trojans and this thing called green av.  I deleted all  those things but I guess one of those deletes GOT rid of the wireless network adapter.

Usually when I do a clean install, I go to the manufacturer website on a different computer, download the wireless network driver and or the ethernet driver, transfer it to the computer that had the reinstall, and once I connect that to the internet, go to devicce manager and automatically search the web for the driver for the other devices that have yellow exclamations.

But in this case the ethernet driver worked, not the wireless one (I disabled the ethernet and enabled the wireless, which could read that there was the network but it didnt connect).  I uninstalled the wireless adapter, and then connected through the ethernet cable and tried to do the usual 'search the web automatically' but there was no entry for wireless adapter in device manage so I couldnt do that.  Whats more I couldnt FIND a driver for the network controller that way either.

Theres just so many drivers i dont know which one to choose.  I was contemplating doing a system restore but I thought I might get some hints from this board, so here I am
What wireless device are you using ? ?
If it didn't come from Dell it won't be listed at their site... Quote from: shashgo on October 11, 2009, 10:31:46 PM

..So which drivers do I need
Go to www.support.dell.com and enter your Service Tag Number located on the bottom of the laptop. For wireless, Dell use only the following antennas Broadband or Intel.  Follow Computer_Commando post and the driver u need will be under Network.  If u do not know which one u have, try installing one at a time.Ummmmmm...
The wireless device may have been added later which is why i asked.its a built in wireless device and I havent opened up the computer to find out the manufacturer.  But what puzzles me is that why cant I download a wireless driver straight from t he dell.com site for my model and make and have it work, which is what I normally do.

Also, what driver do I install from there for the network controller device?

I did put in my service tag number to find the drivers.  Didnt know what driver to download.  Then got to the driver page using the make and model, and still didnt know what driver to download as it was the same page

Why is it that some devices in device manager can automatically find the driver through the add new hardware wizard and some cannot

What do  I do though
When you enter the Service Tag, you can also view the shipped configuration which will list the exact model of the wireless card.Hello
Go the support.dell.com
Start a chat session (Dell will not charge for this). They will give u the link/driver for your Laptop(LT). The other option is look underneath the bottom of LT. Search the labels, look for one that states Intel or Broadcom or Broadband. This is the built in antenna model in the LT. If u find both models, it just simply means u have two antennas install (its common). This will give the model and make of the wireless antennas. Then it is a matter of downloading and installing the drivers.

Solve : Switch off OSD in WMP 11.0????????

Answer»

When watching a movie all of a sudden a green bunch with letters and figures showed in the eft upper corner of the WMP screen? Audio Track stuff...cant remmember I did something to evoke that one. So somebody told me to switch off the OSD, but where the heck do I find that option?

Have Athlon 64, 4.2Ghz, 2gigs RAM, XP+SP3 and all the other automatic updates, IE70(up til today NO problems with it), AVG antivirus/antispyware, SYGATE firewall, Spybot, Superantispyware...

18 nov 2008: NO answers/solutions yet...wow...unexpected18 nov 2008: NO answers/solutions yet...wow...unexpected for this board I dont know how to turn off OSD but I can suggest an alternative solution.
Download VLC player to WATCH those movies. It is a very GOOD FREE media player. After you use it for a while you will probably like it a lot better tham WMP.
http://www.download.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.htmlSorry about the lag in response time Peter...
It's possible no one understood the issue.
Can you post a screenshot ? ?difficult to make a screenshot tried several times, but no pic...but I might be able to describe it better: its a bunch of green letters and figures tellin me the specifics of the audio track right in the left topcorner of my moviescreen...somebodt called it the OSD was active. It says:(in green colours)

Audio Track
Input description:32000hz, stereo 98kbps mp3(libmad)
Current input bitrate:96kbps

and I really cant find ANY reason why this info all of a sudden showed itself in my moviescreen. I t doesnt do it with VLC ETC...hahahahahaha but thats not the point here...Check under Tools/Plugins and see what's listed there...
I see no OSD option anywhere in Tools here.
Course i use WMP about as often as i use a crowbar...

It may also be the way the movie was created...did you consider this ?yes, I did consider that but....I have watced 2 movies before WITHOUT the bloody audiotrack green letters and figures and...it happened (God knows why) after the last automatic MS update on my PC....so.......and yes it doesnt occur in VLC...lol...So what plugins do you have in WMP ? ?
