Solve : Moving Folder Verification?

Answer»

hello all,

I was hoping to get some help on an issue that my mother keeps having (she's 73).
She does a bit of photo manipulation ans moving files and things around using drag-and-drop methods.
My question is: Is there any way to setup a verification prompt when dragging and dropping a folder into another folder? She does this inadvertently and then spends hours trying to understand where her folder or file have gone!

If not a windows tweak or option, then maybe a DOS Batch file to detect folder moves, Whatever....

Thanks

iONikIf she drops it in the wrong place, press CTRL+Z to undo. Quote from: kpac on July 01, 2010, 11:57:20 AM

If she drops it in the wrong place, press CTRL+Z to undo.

Most of the time she doesn't know that she does it till she finds it missing. The easiest way would be to do the search option since they are just photos or jpeg files. Just click on "My Computer" and click the "Search" option. Click on "Pictures, music or video". PUT a check mark on pictures and photos. Click on "Use advanced search". Click on the down arrow key(Look in) to drop on the menu and choose on the drive/s you want to search.Try this

Quote
Right click on the Windows task bar, go to properties,
start menu, customize, advanced, uncheck enable drag and
drop.

Maybe that would work? I happened to come across this suggestion before, forgot where though. That should disable drag and drop, force your mom to stop doing it. Quote from: 2x3i5x on July 01, 2010, 11:45:50 PM

Now this is good to know, but change is a difficult thing as well. She would have to press copy, Paste, cut, paste, and in the end would probably get her into more trouble than before.

Now where's Microsoft when ya need them, ya know the Microsoft that want double and triple verification for everything? ...like are you sure you want to send "bla.bla" to the recycle bin then are you sure you want to empty the recycle bin.  All we need is one simple verification, are you sure you want to move this folder and it's contents to that folder?  ...and of course a way to disable it. Pretty bloody simple. Do you think the DOS people would be able to come up with something?

Solve : how to get Windows Explorer to remember settings for directory listings?

Answer»

I have too many SUBDIRECTORIES and files for the icons listing to be of any use, I need for the Windows Explorer listing windows to open in the "View -> List" mode by default..

In Win2K I never had a problem READING my directory listings, going back and forth it remembered if I wanted the listing-view as icons, simple list, or details, and gave me right away the type of listing-view I had selected the last time I opened that particular directory.  Moreover, from the get-go it would open all directories in the simple list view as I had indicated in the settings, I only had to change the view if I wanted the details list.  I need for Windows XP Pro Explorer to work that way.
.
But in XP Pro the settings in my Windows Explorer listing windows  have been erratically remembered from the start.  And now this YEAR, I have been unable to get the listings to remember I do not want the icons: it always shows me the icons first, then I have to change to list, but if I return to that same window where I made the changes, even though I have not closed Windows Explorer in the meantime, (while going to see directories in other windows),  when I return to the window where I made the change it loads up showing the icons-view again, such a WASTE of my time!  I'm wondering whether certain features in XP Pro were date-limited by design by  Microsoft, trying to get customers to buy a new OS, lol!
.
I've STARTED looking for a new, external file manager program, but I hope instead, that someone has a fix for the original OS I already paid for...

Solve : unable to upgrade windows xp to windows 7.?

Answer»

I tried upgrading windows XP to windows 7 but am unable to do so. As SOON as boot able CD of Windows 7 is inserted, the windows logo comes and a green patch in the lower half of monitor shows the CD is running. But it continues for long and no further action is done. PLEASE help.

I also tried to directly install windows 7 but am unable to do so. Please help.

I have RAM of 1 GB and 160 hard disk, does that hamper/slowdown the installation PROCESS?Try booting to the Windows 7 disc. Also, 1GB is the minimum for Windows 7 - you might consider adding more. As for the drive, as long as there's enough free space it doesn't matter how large it is.I've also tried booting with windows 7 CD but not successful. The same green patch gets scrolling indicating that the OS is getting downloaded but it continues for long.what to do?Are you actually booting to the Windows 7 disc? What EXACTLY appears on the screen? And is this an original, retail copy of Windows 7 or is it something you downloaded? You can't directly upgrade Windows XP with a Windows 7 install disc. There is no upgrade path. You have to choose a "custom" install and you would have to move all your files off onto e.g. an external drive, and reinstall all your software.

(ii) They frequently keep many infected pendrives in my system i want to avoid this by disabling usb ports, cd drive how can i do this.

(iii)I want to create a separate account for them where they will have limited number of access

How can i achieve the above tasks.

Does anyone know where i can found educational videos for Oracle 10g, C, java ?Friends i have got answer for few questions

Ans 1) you can just simply disable the "windows installer service". Just go to run and type "msconfig" and under the services TAB find and uncheck the service. It works for all versions of windows.

Ans 2 ) For problem number two go here(for USB drive)->HTTP://www.makeuseof.com/tag/how-to-disable-usb-ports-to-prevent-malware-infection/
For Cd drive
Start > CONTROL Panel > ADMINISTRATIVE Tools > Computer Management > Device Manager > DVD/CD-ROM drives >
Right click on each drives & disable.

Solve : Print registry extract.?

Answer»

Win XP Pro SP.3

How can I print a listing of hotfixes installed since SP.3 from the registry?

Thanks.Instead of mucking around in the registry, Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) abstracts the data in the Win32_QuickFixEngineering class. You can access this data with a Windows script:

Code: [Select]' List Installed Hot Fixes

strComputer = "."
Set objWMIService = GetObject("winmgmts:" _
    & "{impersonationLevel=impersonate}!\\" & strComputer & "\root\cimv2")

Set colQuickFixes = objWMIService.ExecQuery _
    ("Select * from Win32_QuickFixEngineering WHERE HotFixID <> 'File 1'")

For Each objQuickFix in colQuickFixes
    Wscript.Echo "Computer: " & objQuickFix.CSName
    Wscript.Echo "DESCRIPTION: " & objQuickFix.Description
    Wscript.Echo "Hot Fix ID: " & objQuickFix.HotFixID
    WScript.Echo "Installed On: " & objQuickFix.InstalledOn
    Wscript.Echo "Installed By: " & objQuickFix.InstalledBy
    WScript.Echo ""
Next

Save the code with a VBS extension and RUN from the command prompt as
cscript scriptname.vbs. You can redirect the output to your PRINTER, or a file and then print it.

It was an arbitrary choice of fields to display. A complete list of data fields available can be found here.

Good luck.  Thank you Sidewinder - exactly what I wanted.

Solve : How to Clone XP partition to new drive??

Answer»

Need advice please :-)

I'm the "nerd" who tweaks the computers of my tech-less friends & family, but this clone problem with a 1TB hdd has me baffled.

HISTORY:
My goal: add space & speed to my computer.

1) I got a new 1TB SAMSUNG hdd & installed it. My OS (XP Pro,SP3) recognized, partitioned & formatted it perfectly! :-D

2) I made a 20GB primary active partition on the Samsung for the OS plus 1 more primary partition for data. Then I cloned my reliable-working, identical-sized 20GB OS partition from the "old" 74GB VELOCIRAPTOR I'm using. :-)

3) Changed the BIOS so that the Samsung = boot drive. :-)

4) Computer boots up fine UNTIL THE VERY END when I GET an error message that says, "kernel32.dll" (or sometimes "ntoskrnl.exe") is unhappy and must close. When I close the message, the computer freezes, needing power-off to reboot.  ;-(

5) Read online that this error means I must run FixBoot & maybe FixMBR from Recovery Console of my original M/S XP installation disk.

6) BUT, my original M/S disk is XP Home Ed (2001).  I got a Microsoft package (2004) to upgrade from XP Home into XP Pro, but it is only software, not a boot-able disk.  I then let M/S update my software to SP3.

7) Sadly, there is NO Recovery Console program on my XP Home Ed disk, nor in the XP Pro upgrade software.  So no easy way to run FixBoot.

So, I used BartPE to run "WINNT.exe" (& later tried "WINNT32.exe") off my XP Home Ed disk, and launch FixBoot that way.  BUT Fixboot warned, "the Windows version (= Pro) on this computer is NEWER than on this disk (= Home)."  It then tried to connect to M/S website for some reason. I was off-line at the time, so I shut Fixboot down.

9) I then read online NEVER to let the old (= Home) version of Fixboot link to M/S because it will destroy up my Pro SP3 configuration.  This information scared me away from using the Home version of Fixboot.

10) So, I used BartPE to run "bootsect.exe /nt52" off my original Vista disk (got in '07 before I learned Vista stinks).  "bootsect.exe /nt52" is the Vista name for Fixboot.

11) Although "bootsect" says, "the boot sector (boot.ini) was updated correctly", now the computer only boots up to the blue screen "Installing Windows" and freezes, needing power-off to reboot.  ;-(

What I have tried:

a) various cloning software: Macrium Reflect, DriveImage XML, EASEUS Partition Master, Seagate DiskWizard, WD's version of Acronis True Image, etc. No success.  ;-(

b) swapping cables so Samsung uses the Velociraptor SATA cable. ;-(

c) read about HARDWARE Abstraction Layer archetecture issues to learn if the Samsung is incompatible HAL-wise with my 1.5 year old desktop, but this seems unlikely.

+++++++++++++++
Any ideas from better minds than mine?

Any one know what happens when XP Home version of Fixboot "fixes" a XP Pro upgrade configuration by connecting to M/S website?!?
+++++++++++++++++
thanks :-)Install a cloning software such as Norton Ghost--you can find this program in the common Symantec's "Norton Systemworks" software package. There are freeware packages out there that do the same thing, but make sure any software package you use has good reviews.
Add the new hard drive to your computer. Turn the power off to the computer and install the hard drive as the secondary drive.
Reboot the computer and follow the instructions on the screen to enter the BIOS. Your new drive should show up under the SLOT you installed it, for example Primary master/slave or secondary master/slave, and show the full size of the drive.
Run the cloning software. Follow the instructions with your cloning software. Choose the old drive as the source and the new drive as the target. Double check the BIOS settings if you are not positive which is the new drive.
Turn off your computer after the cloning is finished. Replace the old drive with the new drive. Look on the top of your motherboard or on the new hard drive for the jumper settings specific for your computer. There should be one listed for master and another for slave. Set the correct jumper setting for each drive.
Restart your computer again. If your computer detects the new cloned hard drive, Windows XP should boot up as normal. If it doesn't detect the hard drive automatically, go back to the BIOS and manually select it.
Check your new hard drive to make sure everything copied over properly
I HAD SUCCESS!
THANKS TO ALL FOR THE GREAT ADVICE!  :-D

Last night I
1) used EASEUS Partition Master to successfully clone the entire source boot disk (NOT just the 'C' partition) to the new destination disk (leaving a lot of unallocated space left over, which I easily dealt with later).

2) DISCONNECTED the source disk's SATA cable and attached it to the new hdd BEFORE I REBOOTED!

Thought I tried this procedure before, but obviously not.Just a heads up but whenever you clone a drive the "cloned" drive needs to be taken out of the equation...otherwise the operation is sure to fail...

Solve : A question before I reinstall WinXP...?

Answer»

This will likely be a very long post, so please bear with me.
If you don't want to read all of it, just skip to my question at the end (marked in bold).

I've been working on my primary computer since 6am yesterday until now (3:45am) - roughly 22 hours - trying to get it back up and RUNNING. I'm not entirely sure what happened, but here's how it went:

Late yesterday evening, around 10pm, I noticed there were several new updates available for Windows XP (via automatic updates). Some security fixes, some things for the .NET Framework, and a couple others I don't recall. I ran the update and everything installed fine. I then had to reboot to complete the process. This is when the nightmare BEGAN. When I got back into Windows, my internet connection was dead. Not just dead, but several vital operating systems were simply *gone*. I ran services.msc and discovered that "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" was now corrupt and couldn't be started. Along with that, "Application Layer Gateway Service" was also corrupt.

I couldn't create a new network connection (I use a router between 2 computers), couldn't delete the old connection, and if I tried to edit or fix the existing connection, it would simply freeze up and I'd have to reboot. At that point, after about 6 hours straight of trying to fix things--I had to face the unpleasant truth: Time to do a Windows XP repair via the CD-Rom. Not such a bad thing in itself, I've used it in the past with no problems. However, part 2 of the nightmare began here.

The repair process was going along smoothly up until it started looking for drivers for my soundcard. No big deal... I'd just click browse on the dialog box, find the driver on the CD and that'd be that. Except, what's this? My mouse and keyboard no longer function. Both my keyboard and mouse (generic Dell keyboard, Logitech G5 Laser Mouse) are USB devices. So during the repair process, at some point it removed both of them. All I'd need to do is use the mouse, click browse, find the driver on the CD, and I'd be on my merry way. But without the mouse OR keyboard, I was completely screwed. I had no way of interacting with the computer, so there was no way to tell XP where the driver was located.

I cringed, knowing this mess was about to get worse... and rebooted.

Upon rebooting, I was given the choice to either boot from the CD or simply continue. Since I had no keyboard or mouse support anymore, it continued on its own. Everything seemed okay, Windows was booting up. A sigh of relief... and then I get the message "Setup is now restarting" - it was going to start the repair all over again. So, it'd start going through that, get to the same point with the missing soundcard driver, and I'd have no possible way to interact via mouse/keyboard. This leads you into an infinite loop. Run the repair, lose keyboard and mouse support, get to the missing driver, then be forced to reboot. You reboot, it automatically starts the repair again, you lose mouse and keyboard support again, get to the same missing driver, and are forced to reboot... ad infinitum.

This was not going well.

I began doing many hours of research online (via the secondary computer from which I'm typing this message now) as to how to get around this loop. Eventually, I found a program called BartPE. It allows you to create a bootable XP CD-Rom by using your existing WinXP installation. Using this and its graphical USER interface, I was able to bypass the loop and access XP in a DOS-like environment. So I still wasn't back in Windows, but I could at least access my files and begin experimenting with other possible fixes. Unfortunately, after several more hours, this provided no solution either. I could access my files but had no way of doing anything with them. (I forgot to mention: when bypassing WinXP's repair loop and using BartPE instead, I was able to use my keyboard and mouse again) -- anyhow, one thing I had found online was that the loop was being caused by a damaged boot.ini file. So I tried several different things and, once again, to my dismay, nothing worked.

I was still stuck in the loop, unable to use my mouse or keyboard... and it was such a small problem. Just one driver on one CD. That's all I needed to fix and I'd be able to finish the XP repair. This is when it finally dawned on me that both devices were USB and without their drivers, XP was going to keep doing this over and over no matter what. So I went digging through some old hardware I had laying around in the garage and (finally, some luck!) found an old PS/2 mouse.

I plugged it in, ran the Windows XP repair one more time, got to the missing driver... and finally was able to browse to the soundcard's driver on its CD-Rom -- thus allowing the repair to run its course and complete. I'm now able to get back into the Windows desktop on that computer... but there's still a problem. On top of everything else, now the Layered Service Provider is corrupt. I have absolutely zero access to anything related to the internet. I can't even connect to my router's configuration page via its IP in Firefox or IE. I can't even *open* my e-mail software, let alone access it far enough to get an error saying there's no internet connection available.

Again, back to this computer to do more research. I found LSP-Fix, which I'm sure some of you are already aware of, that is designed to repair this exact problem. Alas, it did not work for me. Somehow, something vital along the way has gotten utterly annihilated in Windows. I now have to face another unpleasant reality: backing up all my files and doing a fresh install of Windows XP.

So... this brings me to my question:

I have Windows XP partitioned into two drives. C:\ is where Windows is installed. E:\ is my "extra space" or whatever you want to call it. I have video games installed there and some miscellaneous files. What I need to know before I do a clean install is this: Do I need to backup anything on the E:\ drive as well or will it remain untouched? Rather than use up 25 CD-Rs, I'd like to use as few as I can and just move some things to the E:\ drive.

Will I lose everything in there or is it safe, even when doing a clean install? My CONCERN is that a clean install will want to partition the drive again and I'll lose anything that was on the E:\ drive.you could just get a PS/2 keyboard... it's good to have one, at least as a back-up when stuff like that happens.Yes, I believe I will after all this.

But I want to know if doing a clean install will erase everything on the E:\ drive or if I can store things there as backup, along with CD-Rs.

Do you know if doing a clean install will wipe out both C:\ and E:\?It will not wipe out your E partition unless you explicitly choose to do so. You will get an option to install to the C partition. Just do things deliberately and carefully and read the choices carefully before clicking OK.

Okay, good to know. Thank you very much!

Solve : blue fields (background) on desktop?

Answer»

Hi EVERYBODY,
this is not really life threatening but has anybbody an idea how to get rid of the blue highlighting of DESKTOP item names/descriptions.
I am using win xp and it appeared suddenly. I am not sure what I have done to cause it but I copied/pasted a Google FILE to the desktop.
I had the same problem ages ago but I can't remember how it is to be solved.

WELL in the meanwhile I learned that it's (drop)shadows behind the icon labels but the proposed procedure via control panel-system-syst. properties-settings-use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop does not work.If you mean you have a backdrop behind the text of the icons when you have not selected them...

1)  Go to "Control Panel".
2)  Go to "System".
3)  In the "System Properties" window, click the "Advanced" tab.
4)  In the "Performance" section, click "Settings".
5)  Check the box next to "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" (it is near the bottom of the list) and click "OK" for all THREE windows.

The backdrops will go away unless you select an icon.

Solve : Wow the biggest problem after virus removal!! (Click here for the Challenge)?

Answer» HELLO everyone! I am new to these forums but seems to me like its quite the place to get your computer problems fixed so i will try to explain my best what the situation is and see if you can figure it out because i sure cant!

Ok recently i had a nasty virus on my computer due to someone installing a program. Anyway the virus was the famous (Windows Police Pro) Which i understand to be what is known as a rogue program? Which basically pops up a window that looks like microsoft scanner and tells you that you have trojans and the such and it can be fixed if you buy their software.

Now when i got home for the first time and SAW this i knew it was a virus or something to the fact and tried countless times on removing it manually but failed due to the fact it was in use. (Note: I could not access the internet or any programs on my computer, also task manager was disabled due to the windows police pro)

Anyway i thought i was smart and tried to boot it into safe mode. Failed because that to was disabled / turned off.  so i turned it back on to normal mode. and somehow managed to get into my norton anti virus program due to the fact it runs on start up and could click the button on the bottom right. so i did a full scan and it removed bits and parts of the program. anyway i restarted after the scan was complete and rebooted. and got the white background that says active background recovery. but cant move hardly anywhere or click on anything but programs do work but takes forever to load(Example: i can access MSconfig via Run but takes a total of 20 minutes for it to load the window but after it loads you can access other tabs and loads each tab EVERY 10 seconds or so)

I was in Msconfig and decided to just use the basic drivers and restarted and got an error.

Anyway thats where i am at now. Any help?

oh ya ps: i am on another computer and not on the computer that is infected.Clik Here and Follow the Instructions...thanks. I have read the post and cannot even do any of the steps reasons being

1. cant even access the add/remove panel when i click start -> Control panel it shows the screen no ICONS no links just the screen (as in its probably there it just never fully loaded it and STOPPED)

2. Cant download HijackTool because i cant access the internet let alone download something.

3. Same as reason 2 cant get to the internet to download any of the software because of freeze issues and slowness.

only thing i can really do is access the Run program and a few other things but thats about it.  not even my regular buttons on the bottom right screen show up norton included.

Solve : scheduling tasks to start after log on?

Answer»

Hi there,

I was just wondering if it was possible to schedule a task at a specific time AFTER LOG ON.  I know that I could use a batch file to wait a few moments and then start the program, but that is more of a work around.

I was wondering if this was possible using the windows schedule task.  I look at windows's documentation and did a little poking around but couldn't find anything.

Thanks a lot,

Two-Eyes %I use the program Startup Delayer to delay a couple of my startup items when I log on.

It may be worth checking out.thanks, will check out as soon as I can, since i'm not on the computer i want to use it on.
...
after a sec of THOUGHT, I was hoping the function already existed.  I could always do this:
Code: [SELECT]sleep X minutes
start blabla
or SOMETHING like that without downloading anything else...

[not to DIS you or anything ]

Thanks again,

Two-Eyes %Heh, no problem.

I think the program provides a much efficient and easier interface to mess with.

Like I said, definitely something to TEST out. Quote

Solve : DirectX / Direct3D problem?

I have:

My drivers are updated as much as they can be according to VARIOUS driver programs I have tried.

If anyone can help please. Ive been looking all over the web for about a month now...

Solve : Computer crash while partitioning?

Answer»

I was repartitioning a hard drive (not the C drive) by dividing the drive to 2 partitions. The HDD is 1 TB with lots of important things on it.

My computer crashed in the middle of the partitioning and now it just says "not formatted". I was able to give it a drive letter so I see it in the explorer window but it has no file system and is "not formatted".

What can I do to get my data off of it? Do I just need to fix the MBR? Do I just need to assign a file system? Can I assign a file system without FORMATTING it? Can I just RECOVER data from it with some 3rd party data recovering software? Which one? Should I format it (to give it a file system) and THEN use a 3rd party data recovery software that can RESTORE data from a formatted drive?

Please help. Thank you.I know it's a little late to tell you this, but you should NEVER perform any disk level operations - especially partitioning - without first backing up all critical data. I'm not sure what you can do at this point, but I know what you should not do - DO NOT FORMAT. And the only way to "assign a file system" as you put it is via formatting or converting an existing file system (of which there is none).

Hang around and wait for SOMEONE more knowledgeable in this area than I am - but in the meanwhile do not do anything.double postOk, I installed a 3rd party program called EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard and right at the start it listed all my drives INCLUDING the "problematic" one but to my surprize, it says the Label name I had AND it says NTFS! So I'm doing a scan now and have my fingers crossed. I'll let you know what happens.

Yes, it WAS stupid to do what I did without backing the data up but I never had a computer crash and don't even have a spare 800GB to back it all up anyhow.
For future reference, you can back it up to cd or even better use a partitioning utility such as Acronis True Image (which will allow you to create an image on cd, dvd, or hd).Yes, Acronising it (if I can make up a word) would have been a good idea! I Acronis my C drive all the time! I don't know why I didn't think of that.

Anyway, the EASEUS Data Recovery Wizard says it has 4 more hours to go so I'll go to sleep and hope for the best in the morning.

So far it says that it found 1 NTFS Boot Record, 9853 NTFS File Records, 405 Files Identified and 10259 Files found and counting. It seems that it finding all the data. I hope it just makes the disk usable without having to copy the data to another drive which is usually what data restoration programs do when lost data is found.I've had luck with this software

The program found ALL the files. It restored them in about 5 hours. The problme is that most files won't open. Avi, mp3, project files, images.... when I try to open them I get a message saying its an invalid image or invalid data... All the files seem to be intact! What can I do to figure out why they won't open? If the program found them and copied them to another HDD, why wouldn't they open and work? Can this be fixed?
These are files and projects that I have worked on for months and I would be greatfull if someone can help me.

Thank you.

Solve : Deleting old Windows Installations??

Answer»

Hey there,

It's me, Miles. Haven't been here for a while. But now I'm back with a problem! The problem is I have 3 windows installations on my PC. (Windows 7, Windows XP Home, and Windows XP Pro.) My primary OS is the XP professional. I WANT to delete the other two without having to do a clean install. Thing is, I can't access them! So their is no way to actually go into them and uninstall them. So their is my problem.

How do I uninstall them?

- Milesman  Can't you just boot in XP pro and format the other 2 partitions? Not enough info...They are all on a single partition so I can't just delete the partition. Any more information needed?

- Milesman
What names are on the Windows folders in Windows Explorer ? ?
Deleting the XP Home INSTALLATION is easy. Boot to the XP Pro installation and delete the other Windows FOLDER from Windows Explorer. It's that easy. 7 may not be so easy primarily because of the boot loader. I haven't installed 7 yet so I'm not sure what NEEDS to be done to eliminate the newer boot loader and return to the boot.in file (which may also need to be edited to remove the reference to XP Home).I don't think we're getting all the info here...
As far as i know Win7 won't install to a partition that already has a Windows install on it.... Quote from: PATIO on October 19, 2009, 06:11:47 AM

AhhHe may mean all 3 are on the same "physical" drive...Hmm... well I had first had Win7 then installed XP later. They are on the same partition. You installed XP AFTER Windows 7? And on the same partition?

Solve : Debug Assertion Failed?

Answer»

Hello,

I don't know what caused it, but I have started getting an error message when I try to RIGHT click on items on my desktop or in a windows explorer window.  I am only trying to delete items from my desktop (folders of photos of my kids) and I can't do it directly or via C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\desktop.  I get the same thing.  Even if I try to cut!  I don't understand what is happening.  I have a tablet pc and I am receiving the following error message.  I have run a virus scan and I have checked add/remove PROGRAMS but there isn't anything out of the ordinary there.  I am up to date on my windows updates as well.  If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate them.

Microsoft Visual C++ Debug Library

Debug Assertion Failed!

Program: C:\Windows\Explorer.EXE

File: f:\sp\vctools\crt_bld\self_x86\crt\src\vsprintf.c

Line: 244

Expression: ("Buffer too small",0)

For information on how your program can cause an assertion failure, see the Visual C++ documentation on asserts.

(Press RETRY to debug the application.)

Abort     Retry     IgnoreHow long has it been happening? Did you install any new software or make any changes right before it started? It started happening a few days ago.  I installed JAlbum, a web-photo publishing software that I have been using for years and updated my java.   I noticed it right after I installed these, but I cannot be sure they are the "culprit."  I don't normally save things to my desktop unless I am publishing photos so I don't normally have a need to right-click on my desktop.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled both with no luck.  Alternately I can left-click on any icon on my desktop, including the aforementioned folder of photos and they all EXECUTE without issue.

An update.  Last night I ran full virus, malware and spyware scans last night and all came back clean.  I use AVG for antivirus, and I used Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D to do the malware/spyware scans.Try doing a system restore to before the problem started.

If that doesn't help, click Start then Run and type in: sfc /scannow and press enter. Notice the space between the c and the /. Have your windows CD handy, it will ask for it.Unfortunately, neither worked.  The scannow ran for about an hour but no luck.  I had the system restore all the way back to early August but that didn't work either.

Thank you for all of your help on this, I really appreciate it.

Solve : Multiple questions for generial Windows XP.?

Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 22, 2009, 05:57:58 PM

You said it is a
HP All-In-One.
With no model number.
So we took that to mean the ultimate all in one that has:

Quad core at 4 GHz  .
16 GB memory         .
Vista Ultimate 64 bit .
HDTV  with Dish       .
Terabyte DVR           .
Laser Color Printer    .
24 CUP Mr Coffee.     .

Can't wait to get one!
And now I DO have the model number in the same post as my computer information. All in one means scanner, printer, and camera card capabilities.  I wasn't arguing you didn't need the model number. I frankly do not even know what you are commenting on anyway. It took me forever to find the model number on the printer because sooommeeoonne pointed me to the manufacturers website  talking about I could find an AUTO detect. All I had to do was look above the power button. if someone said it's on the printer I would of found it on the printer. I didn't buy this printer myself and never needed the number before.

I just never heard of a printer having a graphic card in the acutely printer. All i know of is the one that is installed in the pc tower.

Its been nearly TEN hours and still no one has helped me at all. Oh I am pretty sure that 1 is a problem with my driver itself.I don't know about anyone else, but I'm very confused. Your original post above says you have an HP All-In-One Computer (and there IS such a beast). Now you say you meant "printer" and not "computer", but you're annoyed with us for not knowing what you meant. Then you complain it's been 10 hours without anyone helping you (this is after you got an attitude when I asked a simple & legitimate question in my first post above).

If I were you I'd ask one question at a time - providing the correct information with the question - so we can try to help you in a more effective manner. The quality of the assistance you receive will be in direct proportion to the quality of the information you provide. And if we don't respond quickly enough please do continue to let us know.I have multiple little questions that I will PUT here until I figure out which category all of them go too.

1. When I try to play dvds it plays back SLOW and vibrating like. The picture shakes and the audio is cut into split second intervals. How do I fix this.

This maybe the drive itself is on its way out. Do the DVDs play normally in another machine?

2. There is a quicktime error that pops up on certain sites. It says it is error# 0.

Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall quicktime?

3. I have a all-in-one HP computer. When my computer starts up it will be stuck on a blank black screen with a flashing dash in the corner. I learned that when turning of my printer it will continue to start up.

I think you should try to uninstall the software for it. Not just the driver. Then do a fresh instll with the lastest software. Normally you can download it from HP.
4. Again with the printer. When I open up the HP solution center, my screen changes resolution to a huge font and icons.

The reinstall should help with that as well.
5. Lastly and most important of all.
I bought the sims 3 and when I start it it says that I need Shader model 2. I have a all-in-wonder radeon 7500 graphics card. Lets just say it was brand new when i got my computer, so it's old. With research I learned the names of all of the graphics cards that have it. None that I saw were all-in wonder. I have not used it's features at all hardly but I am not sure if I switch to a plan graphics card my computer will change some how.

6. Where can I search all of these graphics cards at once and select the best cheapest one?
Radeon:
9500, 9600, 9800
X300, X600, X700, X800, X850
X1300, X1600, X1800, X1900, X1950
2400, 2600, 2900
3450, 3650, 3850, 3870,
4850, 4870
Intel® Extreme Graphics
GMA X3x00 series
Will it hurt if I try that nvidia brand?
NVIDIA GeForce series
FX 5900, FX 5950
6200, 6500, 6600, 6800,
7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950
8400, 8500, 8600, 8800
9600, 9800, GTX 260, GTX 280

tiger direct
or newegg are good places to start....

Spoiler:
1. Yes the dvds do play in other machines. Thanks for confirming my suspension. Now I can add new cd reader along with new graphic card.

2. I have and now it does work. I will update the first post.

3. and 4. I meant printer. I never noticed it before until Allan just exploited my mistake. (If I was talking about a printer in every other post wouldn't it of sent a flag that I didn't know I made the mistake?) I have uninstalled and reinstalled the software twice before. Right now is has the latest software updates from the HP website. I was thinking about maybe it could be manufacturer issue? It's out of warranty now though.

It's basically 2 pages of people asking questions or commenting.
Are there anyone else that comes to the thread besides you two?
The first two posts of this thread has my problems and has all the information about my computer.
Maybe someone else can just focus on that and stop all of this conversation. You know what? You're right. Just wait around for someone else to help you. I'm sure your attitude will attract a great deal of assistance. The OP asked a LOT of question in one post. So this post is longer that needed.
1. All  in one printers have a history of hard installs.
2. Wrong video drivers really mess up DVD movies.
3. Poorly installed audio drives can mess up the sound.

Also, both XP and Vista have quirks with browser and and flash plug-ins and media players. And if you use quick time, more issues.

It is no secret that many drivers are poorly tested. Look at all the revisions they have. But there are a few pieces of older hardware that have hardly ever have changed the driver.

And to make it worse, some drivers and utilities from the makers can not be uninstalled easily!

So the aforementioned  is big part of the reason to ask for model numbers. The motherboard itself has a set of drivers needed for best performance. And sometimes they have to be revised. Often.

You need to find our from HP if there is a computability issue with popular video cards and the motherboard you have.

Solve : When doing a repair with windows xp pro it stops before finishing?

Answer»

When i use my windows xp professional with sp2 cd. every thing goes fine until NEAR the end. A window comes up that says "Please Wait" then nothing happens. I waited 2 hours then reset my computer. I think that's when it configures drivers. Is it possible that one of my programs keep it from finishing. Such as Spybot search and distroy with tea timer, superantispyware, MALWAREBYTES (free edition),windows defender, windows firewall. The cd has worked before so i don't know what changed. maybe tea timer?A few questions are needed here.
How long has the computer than working normally before this occurred?
What kind of computer already talking about here? Is this a manufactured desktop? A laptop? A home built?
Are you using a standard windows XP retail installation disk?
Have you already backed up your important files?
Do you have another hard disk drive?
Also, do you have a way of checking to see if the XP install CD works alright on another computer?
Have you carefully examined the surface of the CD to make sure there are no scratches smudges or fingerprints?
Of course, you do understand that if your copy of windows XP is not legitimate we will not be able to help you on this forum.
Otherwise, we have some of the best experts available any where.
I have had this computer for about three years. It is a desktop systemax from ABS. The disk i am using came with the computer. I have used it to do a repair a couple of times before with out any problems. I have another brand new xp oem disk and that does the same thing. It stops near the end and says "Please Wait". I don't have a second hard drive nor do i have access to another computer to test the disk. The disk has no finger prints or smudges on it. I did use a lint free cloth to wipe gently from the center out to the edge just to make sure. I don't see any scratches on the disk. I have backed up my important files on two 8gb usb drives. the only change i can think of is the addition of spybot tea timer. The disk i have is windows xp professional with sp2. I have down loaded sp3 and all the updates plus IE8. .
I did have some problems when i did the repair.
1) script error when closing system information.
2) troubleshooter in device manger would not work
3) help and support had no options in the left pane
4) no sound
When i ran the repair again even though it stopped at the same point it cleared the first three problems. I had to download Realtek ac97 to solve the sound problem.
The question i am asking  could one of the spyware programs that i MENTIONED cause this problem. If i remember right, when the disk stops responding, that is the point when it configures the system and drivers.

Thanks for the information. That does help. On this forum there are a number of articles and posts about the program you mention.
CH Results for spybot tea timer:
Your observation is valid. It worked before. You added a program, then it does not work right. The logical conclusion is the newly installed program interferes with some process. What do you mean you are doing a "repair"? Exactly what are you TRYING to do?Allen

What i mean by doing a repair is a reinstallation of windows xp professional from the windows xp setup disk. I started the xp setup disk and pressed enter "to set up windows now". I did not choose the R to use the recovery console. I agreed to the license agreement . I then selected my current installation of windows xp and pressed R to repair windows XP.
I was trying this time to fix the problems listed above. I hope this helps.Okay, you are doing a repair install. I just don't understand why you say it may be other programs that are installed that are creating the problem. During the repair install, Windows is not aware of your other programs. You are booting to the XP CD and CHOOSING the second repair option, correct? That essentially just installs XP on top of itself. It makes no difference what programs have previously been installed.

You might want to run checkdisk. To do this properly, boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r
After it completes you can try the repair install again, but I have to admit I'm not sure what is causing your problem if it isn't a repairable disc error.Repair Install of XP

Repair Install of XP
I suggest reading it thru and printing out a reference copy before starting...
Thank you Patio. That is Excellent!

Another option to consider (since the cost of 100 + gig hard drives has dropped to well under $75) would be to disconnect the current hard drive and install a clean XP from retail disks or restore media to a new hard drive. You can then connect the original hard drive after configuring the jumpers to a slave drive. You can retrieve important files. One thing to remember, if a hard drive has not been formatted or written over by reinstalling, the data is accessible. The less you access a hard drive after a non-boot episode; the better your chances of retrieving your data.
From link given by Patio above.

Im running windows xp and am trying to connect to the internet. When trying to load Internet EXPLORER page will not load...  I dont know what to do and.  I can connect with my laptop but not my desktop which im doing so by Ethernet cord PLEASE HELPFrom the information in your POST we would make these INITIAL assumptions.
1. Your lap top ngets to the Internet through a wireless connection and you have a wireless router that works either on cable or DSL.
2. Your desktop computer has not been on the Internet and you are just now trying to get your desktop computer to access the Internet by direct connection to the router.
If the above correctly represents your situation, Here is what you would have to do. You would have to run the network WIZARD under Windows XP and set up a local area network for your computer using the router as the network source. Once properly set up, you should get to the Internet and also see your laptop in the network places.
You did not mention what type of laptop you have, what kind of router use, or what sort of Internet connection you have. These details could make a big difference in the answers we would give you. And what kind of Desktop.
Details matter.

Solve : Access Denied Old My Document Files - Changing Permission on Multiple Files?

Answer»

Hello,

I recently had a problem with a FRIENDS computer that they could no longer bootup in to. It was Windows XP Pro, it would just reboot all the time. You could no longer access the OS. So I suggested installing a fresh XP Pro on a new harddrive and move you saved files to the new harddrive.

Well, now I am to the point of moving the files and I KEEP getting a Access Denied error when I try to paste them to the new hard drive. I KNOW how to change the security permissions for each file and it allows me to move the files then. I used this article from Microsoft to learn how to change the permissions http://support.microsoft.com/kb/810881

My questions is this. How can I change the security permissions on multiple files?

I have 1000 different files that I need to do this on so I can move them. You could look into the CACLS command in commandline. Should do the job in combination with some for loops. Also technet.microsoft.com usually has scripts such as these.

CACLS

Ok thanks,
I have a couple questions.

I navigated in to the root folder of all the files and sub-folders that I want to change the permissions for.

What name should I use for filename size I am wanting to change multiple files and not just ONE?

Code: (Example Given) [Select]cacls FileName [/t] [/e] [/c] [/g User:permission] [/r User [...]] [/p User:permission [...]] [/d User [...]]
Does this look correct for how I should use the command?

Code: (my version) [Select]cacls FileName [/t] [/c] [/f User:permission] [/f User [Jemrada]] [/p User:permission [Jemrada]] [/d User [Jemrada]]Maybe the programmers here would know how to use that command. Let's wait if anyone answers.if you put all the files in teh same folder, you should be able to do:

Code: [Select]cacls *.* /t /G User:Jemrada:F

within that folder.

here's a KB  article that has a way to do this using the UI as well:

* You can turn on Automatic Updates so that your computer downloads the latest service pack automatically.
* You can download the service pack manually online.
* You can order the service pack on a CD.

i think this is not your CD problem , first of all you have clean your Hard drive primary drive.
then you install XP in your system .

if this installation  in running this gives any file is corrupt so, its CD problem but now this is not CD problem.

You could look at an app called autohotkey that would allow you to set a task to repeat every hour.

If you already have knowledge of creating batch FILES then you should find it a fairly easy and highly useful programI would go with the Task Scheduler like patio said.

you can set up the batch file to run every hour or every day or whatever you want.

Solve : Accidental deletion of Registry entry supporting cameras?

Answer»

Okay, I have to ask. Why WOULD it replace a service? If it is a service that Windows default settings determine is on all the time...and the KEY has been deleted...the key will be re-created.Wahoo! Yahoo! Hallelujah! It worked!  I was able to successfully do a windows install repair!  All my users were still intact.  Everything I could have hoped.  After applying about 150 windows updates (seriously it had to be very close to that) I'm back in business.  My camera is now detected properly and shows up as a media device, launches the - "what do you want to do" wizard.

What is also VERY cool... I was concerned about loosing my linux Grub boot loader.  Windows didn't touch that!  I can still boot into Linux.  Well, I haven't actually tried it yet but the boot loader still displays and I have Windows boot by default.

Thank you to all who contributed ADVICE on this!

Answer»
I have a windows XP
When the COMPUTER is turned on the computer screen blinks for about 25 minutes then STOPS . What would cause that ?There may be several reasons.....

1) fluctuations in the power
2) Attachment of monitor plug in the socket
3) Your monitor's inner condensers
4) mobile PHONES nearer to your monitor

check them......

borrow another monitor and try. if the problem persists it's with your cpu or os
if not you need to change your monitor or get it repaired.....

Solve : Serious problem with USB devices?

Answer»

When I plug in a USB it is not detected in "My Computer". There are 4 "removable disks" and none of them are SHOWING the USB device I plugged in. I'll take a picture to show you what I mean. Whenever I click on the removable disks they say "Please insert a DISK into Removable Disk (G:) (H:) (whatever:)...

So where is my USB device that I just plugged in?

Here is the picture, please look because it will help you understand

http://i41.tinypic.com/6gy8bb.jpg

As you see in the picture the USB drives are no where to be found and I can't access my thing I put in the USB slot. Where can I find it?My hunch is you have a card reader installed in your machine with 4 different card slots?

These will always display as icons with drive letters in both Vista and windows 7 and unless a memory card is inserted it will report the error you described "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk".

Your usb device should be detected separately and Vista should ask you to install DRIVERS for your device.

What sort of USB devices have you tried?
What USB ports are you trying (front, rear, One on card reader...)?
Does the usb device work in another PC?

Once we know this we may be able to better help you out.Does your PRINTER have a card reader ? ?Sorry guys I'm an idiot. Apparently Apple doesn't let you view their devices in "My Computer" and you can only access from Itunes. Sorry problem is solved now and everything is fine. You're not an idiot.....
Glad you got it solved.Apple is very greedy when it COMES to their devices and using Windows. iTunes is a PITA. My iPod shows up in the Windows 7 "Computer" but is listed as a camera...

If it's music files you are trying to work with then use http://www.mediamonkey.com/
The free version will do all you need as far as working with your iPod library within your device.

A slick little tool I recently discovered for working with USB devices, Apple included, use USBDeview http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html (Another quality NirSoft tool!)

Solve : Windows XP and HP Printer printing from web - help?

Hi,
I suddenly cannot print PAGES from the web.  When I do print preview lots of pages of wording come up with unintelligable wording.

When I try and print from my DOCUMENTS,  all is fine.
Jdmrhs. What model of printer is it you are using and also which drivers? pcl5 pcl6?

Also you may want to try resetting your internet explorer settings to see if that cures it (has worked in about 20% of CASES where I've seen this)

Rob
Hi Rob,
Thanks for reply. The printer is an HP psc 1510 all in one.
What is a pc15 or pc16.  and how do I re-set my internet explorer settings.
Told you I was thick.

J.Hi,
Sorry for the delayed reply.

To reset Internet Explorers settings you do the following:-

1) Open IE
2) Click on the Tools Menu (generally far right, top)
3) Click on 'Internet Options'
4) On the new 'Internet Options' window that appears select the 'Advanced' tab
5) Click the 'Reset' button
6) After resetting you need to close and reopen Internet Explorer

Once you've done this do a 'print preview' before printing to see if that too has garbled output

Solve : my dell 3000 with windows xp?

Answer»

hi to all
i have a dell 3000 and it was turned off one night i came HOME and so i turned it on to load up to windows xp. but it never loaded up, and the screen said primary MASTER drive 0 not present. well i had to reformat the 80 gb hard drive and reload windows xp.  well i got all the drivers backup in the COMPUTER and spent a few more days loading all my stuff i had on it to start with and it ran great. then about a week later i turned the computer off so some kids would not bother it while i was gone and i came back home and turned it back on and i GET this same message that the drive is not there. well i again reformatted the hard drive and started over again. and again after a week or so i got this same message that the drive is not there after turning my computer off and on. i have since then put a new hard drive in and its been running fine until tonight. i turned it off to move it to another location and i got that dreaded message that the primary master drive 0 not found or present. so i was totally upset with my new hard drive i just put in. well i opened the computer up and was just browsing inside the computer and i moved the wires that are connected to the hard drive to make sure the clip was seated correctly. i turn my computer back on and still said same message. so i did a ctrl,ALT,del key thing to reboot computer that way and it loaded up like nothings wrong? does anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem ?

thank you for letting me explain it to you.

Solve : Desktop icons not working...?

Answer»

I have been having an issue with desktop icons not working and the programs refusing to open. This problem is present in programs such as Adobe CS4, Microsoft OFFICE Suite, and even the simpler built-in accessories, such as the calculator and Paint.

At first I assumed I had attracted a nasty LITTLE virus into my system, but after running all of the appropriate software, there were no problems or viruses detected.

This issue is only affecting one desktop on my Windows XP- the others seems unchanged and can open and run all programs just fine. HOWEVER, the desktop that is corrupt is the one in which the majority of the office work and programs is stored on.

I have searched the internet high and low to find a solution, or even a cause for this, and have come up empty.

Anyone?

What happens when you double-click a desktop icon?
Do the programs work if you open them from the start menu?
Good point...

There is a feature in TweakUI that repairs broken icons...

It's FREE.Hi there,
One thing to check is that a single click actually highlights the icon on the desktop as if not you may have had someone try to fool about on the PC.

Someone may have taken a screenshot of your desktop and then set it as a wallpaper and HIDDEN all the icons, as an amusing prank.

Not that I've ever done anything like this to anyone i know...
Thanks all for answering. The icons don't even "display." The image for the original program icon is gone, and in its place there is an icon of a piece of paper with an even smaller image of a box with a blue bar at the top (a mini version of a web browsing page). When I click on them, they do highlight, and when I right click, I get the "Open" option, as well as the others, properties, rename, delete, etc. When I click "Open," it brings up the "choose the program you want to open the program with" box, and it gives a few options of programs, but nothing I could open it with, if that makes any sense. It wasn't a screenshot- I remember the day this happened I was web browsing and it happened then. I don't know if there was a virus running in the background for weeks and it finally really got me good, or if there was a correlation between the webpage I was on?Aha, this sounds like a virus or spyware has been on your machine and broken .EXE associations.

Please see the foloowing link for the steps to perform to fix it.

http://filext.com/faq/broken_exe_association.phpThank you! Will try your suggestion. Appreciate the help!

Solve : How to increase screen resolution??

Answer»

my win xp has the screen resolution of 1208*XXX max------> I need that to be increased to 1400*XXX. It can be DONE bcoz a similar, identical system has got that option and i dont know who has done that. so PLEASE help me in this issue.

ThanksIf the other machine has the same OS (Operating System) and the EXACT same Make and Model of graphics card, then it will just be a CASE of not having the same driver on your machine as the other one has.

Check in Device manager to see what driver they have installed and see if you can get it direct from the manufacturers site.

The only other possibility is that you have monitor drivers installed and your driver for it is restricting the resolutions to ones it can cope with.

Either way if you need any more help get back to me.

Rob [link removed]thers no change in the drivers also because its the company lappy and similar set of drivers and s\w. I am ready to install the drivers also. i tried doing that. but no change. thats a fujitsu seimens LIFE book series s7110.So let me get this straight.

Your Fujitsu Seimens s7110 is limited to a max resolution of 1208*XXX?   ( although I assume you mean '1280' )

What is the model of the other computer with the 1400 resolution?

There were 3 models of that laptop and only the Supreme has resolutions upto 1400, the other 2 have 1280 max.

Link is here http://remarketing.ts.fujitsu.com/shop/images/datenblatt/ds_lifebook_s7110.pdf

Solve : Urgently need to recover chkdsked files?

Answer»

Hey guys, I am in huge trouble.

I WORK at a SCHOOL, and I put about 130 gigs worth of teachers files, which are highly important, onto an external drive that is 250 gigs. I was going to back it up, but since its the holidays I was in a rush to get every lab re-imaged. Our department had some guys in doing work experience, and one of them was using the external drive to ping image some machines. He apparently corrupted it somehow, and then chkdsked the drive.

When I had a look at it, the drive partition was apparently only 70 gigs or so, and it was about 50 gigs full. Every file was 0 kilobytes. I tried some recovery tools, but they didn't find anything. I tried some uncheckdsk tools, but they didn't work, and I assume its because none of the files have a .CHK extension and there is no found000 folder.

I haven't told the HEAD yet, as I wanted to look this up over the weekends. I don't know what to do, and the work experience guys are gone now because school starts in a couple of days.

I really need that data, please tell me there is some way of restoring it?

Cheers.by default chkdsk asks if you want to convert the lost chains to files... if the PERSON using chkdsk responded with "no" then they were simply deleted.

You could try a undelete-type TOOL, like Recuva, but since the files technically still exist (the data in the file was lost) I don't know how well that would work.Hi,

I've used EASEUS Partition Master Home Edition before and it seems to work well with corrupted partitions.  It's free, so I would recommend giving it a try.

Hope this helps.

Solve : Cannot detect a hard disk?

Answer»

About 7 months AGO I had a power outtage while my comp was on. I have an hp pavilion. When I turn it on it loads the blue screen that says hp INVENT then it loads the windows page that has the scrolling bar. It bounces back and forth between these two pages. When we tried to do a system recovery, it says that it was successful, but then when you try to boot it back up and go into the boot screen it says that the hard disk cannot be detected. What does this mean? Do I need a NEW hard drive? Thank you.So you haven't been able to boot for 7 months, is that what you are saying?Hello,
Does the missing hard disk appear in Disk Management?  If so, you might have to right-click it and assign a drive letter.
To open Disk Management, click the Start button, type diskmgmt.msc in the SEARCH box, and click OK

Solve : Works Suite 2003 for XP?

I have uninstalled Works Suite 2003 as I was having TROUBLE with my word print out which just threw a BLANK page out everytime.  I went onto the SPREAD SHEET and the same thing happened with regard to the printer.  A friend advised me to uninstall works suite 2003 - which I did. I also turned off pc and then turned it on to re-install it. Turned the pc of when it had finished installing programmes and then re-started it.

The problem had NOT disappeared and I am now wondering if anyone can help me because this is the first time this has happened.  Does this just happen in works? Or can you print in wordpad or notepad?

I can work with the printer on the web so the only place I cannot print is works.

Solve : CPU temperature overload?

Answer»

Hi,
When trying to turn my computer on this morning, it started to load up but then gave me an error message during that start-up saying CPU Temperate Overload. Press F1 to continue. I pressed F1 and it proceeded to a blank black screen and would go no further.

I've turned the power off and re-started the computer, but continue to either get the same message, or just a black screen and no start-up. When it only gives the black screen a monitor message occasionally flashes on saying 'No Signal Detected'.

I am using WINDOWS XP SP3.

Any help with this would be appreciated, thanks.Firstly, welcome to the FORUMS

We're going to need a little more information in order to help you troubleshoot.
Most importantly, did anything happen or did anything change before this issue started?
How old is the PC, and what are its main specifications?  Make/model would also be fine. Thanks for your reply and welcome.

The computer is about 5 years old, but had a new harddrive put in around 6 months ago. As for computer specifications, it says it is an AMD 64 Athlon on the front, but I can't tell you anymore than that unfortunately.

I TRIED to start it again, and it will start up and I was able to login to my user account. However, as that was loading up the computer froze, and an alarm noise started. Have you opened the case and done any housekeeping ? ?
NOTE: A small soft paintbrush anad a can of compressed air are best for this...
Do NOT use a vacuum.

Pay special attention to all heatsinks; fans and vent holesWhich case? And where can I get to the heatsinks, fans and vent holes? I see where the fan is and I have tried cleaning dust off there (without opening the mesh in front of it) and will look closer and try to clean it better. But at which other points can I get to something to clean? I'm guessing this is an overheating problem.

Thanks patio. Maybe the CPU fan is not working? My Pentium 4 Prescott, which is from the same era, would run for about 2 minutes before thermal SHUTDOWN.
Quote from: jessp2010 on April 17, 2010, 10:04:20 AM

Which case?

The computer case. Unless this is a laptop? So far we don't know anything about this machine.
As has been mentioned above, it definitely sounds like an overheating issue.
Check out this page for some information on cleaning dust and general dirt from your PC.
You say it's around 5 years old which is more than enough time for dust to clog up fans and heatsinks, leading to overheating.
Further to Salmon Trout's point, power up the machine with the side off and make sure the CPU fan (it most likely says AMD on it, if you're not sure which one it is...it should be nearer the top left of the motherboard) is spinning. Quote from: Salmon Trout on April 17, 2010, 10:06:58 AM

It is a desktop computer, not a laptop. Sorry for any confusion.

Thanks for the extra advice Calum, I'll have a look at the link and try to clean the fan etc again. No problem.  Good luck with the cleaning, and let us know what's happening after you've done that.
If you have any questions in the meantime feel free to post back and ask them.I've had a look at that link and decided that I'm not comfortable with opening the case up to clean inside, I'm not familiar enough with it!

When you say power up the machine with the side off, I'm guessing this involves taking something apart/off? Again, if it does involve doing that I'm not sure it's a good idea for me to try it! Could you explain more about what you mean there please? Thanks Quote from: jessp2010 on April 17, 2010, 12:03:16 PM

Desktop computer cases have a removeable side panel or a cover which you can REMOVE by undoing some screws. If you are not happy doing this sort of thing with your computer, you will definitely have to either find a person who is, or take the computer to a repair company. I just did this with my Dell. As long as the power is disconnected and you don't clean it like you would a garage, it's fairly safe and easy. Mine opens like a briefcase that's on it's side. Just remember to remove the power and you'll be surprised how easy it is.  As mentioned, save the vacuum for all the dustballs you'll blow out using a can of air.

But, when the installation is almost over it cancels.

The screen RESOLUTION on my machine (Win XP desktop) is messed up.   When I right-click on the screen, go to display properties/settings, the only two  choices for screen reolution are    800x600 and 1200x800.   The screen SIZE does not fit my 19" flat screen..  when i launch IE brower, I have to scroll back and forth to see the whole screen..    Can anyone HELP me FIX this?    Do you have the correct video driver installed?
