Solve : How can I add Wireless Network Connection?? |
Answer»

I have an older Dell desktop (from 2001) with a new hard DRIVE. I installed Windows Millennium Edition from the Cd's that came with the computer originally. Now I want to access the internet wirelessly, using an SMC wireless network adaptor. I have installed it's software and can see it is running, but have no way to utilize it to connect to the internet. On my laptop (running xp) there is an icon on the desktop: 'Wireless Network Connection' where I can VIEW available wi-fi connections in my area. I want to be able to do the same thing on the desktop computer. I have searched through the Control Panel but cannot find where to add wireless access...there are only modem access choices for dial-up. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.Does your router support wireless?
Or are you accessing other wireless routers? My neighbor has VERIZON fios and gave me his connection information.Okay, just making sure

Did you install the DRIVERS for the SMC in the desktop?I ran the install from the cd provided. Drivers were not separately mentioned. Quote from: majakitty on August 24, 2009, 02:12:50 PM

I ran the install from the cd provided. I can try tonight. What would be the next steps?Let me know when you get there, we'll go through it.Yes, I have the Home Networking Wizard up....Just wondering, does your adapter come with management software? I have a NetGear WG111v2 on my Windows 98SE, which has software which is the only way I can specify my WEP key, although I can CHANGE a device setting under the device manager to change the SSID.Yes, it has an icon by the clock; when I double-click that, the SMC WLAN Monitor comes up with the following tabs: Configuration, Link Information, IP Information, Site Survey and Version Information. The only tab I can modify info on is Configuration to select SSID and set up a profile. The transmit rate is set to auto. Operating Mode is set to Infrastructure (the only other choice is 802.11 AdHoc). These settings were the default. Site Survey allows me to see the available SSIDs in my area. When I double click on the one I want to use, it prompts for encryption configuration info. I entered the info under Network Key. The Link Information tab indicates the Link Quality and Signal Strength and both are good. From this I assume that I am connected. However, when I open Internet Explorer, nothing.Try to connect, then type IPCONFIG /ALL and post the result hereHi there,
Check to see if your SMC Adapter is only capable of using WEP encryption (like mine does) and not WPA as your Router you are trying to connect to maybe set up for WPA etc
Paul

| |
