Solve : Internet on win 98 with LAN card bus? |
Answer»

Open a command prompt on the laptop.. We are trying to connect the laptop to your router using your new pc card..so when we use the ipconfig command, it will tell us a lot about the state of your laptops connectivity... It doesn't MATTER if the laptop was never connected to a router before...

If it gives you a default gateway address (the default gateway address is the IP address for the router...You'll know what I mean when you use the command), ip address, and subnet mask... Then we have determined that your cable is good because if the cable wasn't good then the dhcp server on your router would not be able to assign your computer an ip address... In other words, it could just be that a link light is out on your router...

However, the cable could still be good if you don't have an ip address assigned to your computer (as indicated with the IPCONFIG command), we would simply have to isolate the problem further... However, having no link light on the router when connecting is a good sign that the cable is not send/receiving and that the cable could be bad...its not a new card, the prevous owner used the card 2 days before she gave it to me and about the router. When i hook up a connection the router light indicates theres a conection even when the computer is off. But it won't with this one. by the way do i do this in dos when i have it plugged into the net? While the router is on and the cable is connected...From the desktop, click START, click on RUN,

type: command

press enter

when you are at the prompt, type: ipconfig and press enter

What is the output? Does it give you a default gateway address, IP address, and subnet mask ?OH i'm sorry looks like the cable wasn't working for i'm using the laptop to type this now. Thank-you EEVIAC for all your HELP Just one last question. Will the same format work on a win95 NEC laptop? Glad it's working now

Honestly, the last time I used Windows 95, I was in high school and I'm not familiar with it, but I SUSPECT the configuration would virtually be the same..

| |
