Solve : Cannot load Windows 98 se?

Answer»

When RUNNING scandisk, USING  /all /autofix, scandisk runs thru ‘checking file system’.  It
goes all the way to “157% complete” in the checking file system and locks up the
computer.

If I run set up bypassing scandisk, set up locks up at 22% in the window which states
”Windows 98 Setup”  “Setup is preparing the Windows 98 Setup Wizard which will
guide-----------”.  Computer is locked at this point, however, control alt delete will restart
it.
Have you scanned for viruses and Spyware? Have you kept up with your Windows Updates?

[glb]Flame[/glb]I have not.  The computer has never been connected to the INTERNET although I guess it could have gotten a virus from someones floppy.  The hard drive has been repartitioned and reformatted.I suspect a bad hard drive.  Test it with free software from the manufacturer's website.I have to call the manufacturer.  Their website lists this hard drive as obsolete.  I know
that this computer has been shut down improperly way too many times.  Does that
physically damage the hard drive or the info on the drive.  I don’t see how it can do
physical damage. Quote

1.  Who is manufacturer of hard drive?
2.  No physical damage, but data can be damaged.
It is a Western Digital hard drive.Western Digital’s website has a down load for older drives with a certain prefix in their
model number.  I have down loaded and run it.  This tool found no errors.  I am running
scandisk again to see if it does anything different.  It will take a while.
109% complete and counting.  I WISH I were that efficient.  Where is scandisk?  In DOS?
On the boot disk?  ??

It is a Western Digital hard drive.

This is the diagnostic you want.  It will create a boot diskette.
