Answer» Hello, I have an old gateway running windows 95, PENT 2 , 233.
It has the above cd rom and sometimes it works and some times it does not. I checked the values for Autorun in Regedit and they are correct and I checked the device manager and autorun is checked. When I checked the properties in cd rom, it says the device is WORKING properly.
I have a shortcut on my desktop for cd rom (drive D: and when I double click it I get a message saying
D: is not accessible
The device is not ready
about 2 weeks ago it started working again and I could play music CD's or video games and it worked for
3 weeks. I always left a cd or video game in the CDROM. But when I removed a CD and turned off the computer it went back to the above problem.
Is there a way I can trouble shoot this problem? Thanks, Joe.
Check the data and power CABLES to see if they are connected firmly. If this does not make any difference, CD-ROM drives are very cheap now, you should just buy another one. Better still , get a DVD drive.
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking this was a software conflict. I would hate to change out the cd drive and have the same problem. I checked the cable conections , they seem to be tight. I cant unplug the ribbon cord or card and power jacks. I don't want to force them off and break the pins, putting a lot of force on the ribbon cable to unplug it could turn out bad. I will try to work the plugs back and forth and see if I can get them off.
IT could just be the pins need cleaning I know after a long time they can oxidize a LITTLE and cause a bad connection.

Optical drives decline with age. That drive model was current in 1997.

Whether or not old games will work on a new system depends on the individual game, so there is no solid answer for this. Some games will run, some will need to be modified, some will not run at all. No. DOSBox is, not surprisingly, for DOS games.
It doesn't run Windows 95 games. (of course, they may very WELL be referencing DOS games, since I cannot think of any real notable Windows 95 game).
You can setup Windows 95 on it, but it's kinda buggy and not very stable.
