Solve : Upgrading Windows 98 to XP? |
Answer»

I have a laptop that previously was used in a business by many users. As a consequence it is very SLOW and also has Windows 98 on it.

I have bought XP to put on it. I assumed that one of the things this would do would be to wipe the hard drive in installation thus speeding up the computer. Is this the case? If not how do I wipe clean the hard drive and then put XP on the computer?

I put the XP disc in and it ran automatically. It started to go through the usual screens and then it detected that NORTON anti virus was running. A message came up telling me that this needed to be disabled or removed for XP to load. I tried add/remove programs but it appears that I need a password in order to do this. Unfortunately when I was given the machine I was not given the password. Another unfortunate thing is that now that company has gone out of business and there is no one to contact.

A friend of mine suggested going into the BIOS and selecting the computer to boot DIRECTLY from the CD drive. I tried this and changed the list succesfully with the CD ROM appearing at the top of the list. On rebooting, however, a DOS screen came up with a blinking cursor and it LOOKED as thought the disk drive was spinning. It then seemed not to move forward with the XP boot but rather boot, as normal, onto the Windows 98 desktop.

I would be very grateful for anyone with the expertise and time to have a look at this issue and help me solve it. All I am looking for is to clean the hard drive and start again with a quick laptop using XP.

Thank you for taking the time to read this long entry.Your friend has the right idea, did you have the xp disk in the cdrom when you booted to it?Yes the XP disk was in the CD drive at the time. I do know that the XP disk works (used it on my desktop) and I know that the CD drive works alsoIs it a genuine full version of XP?im not an expert but maybe reformat the drive or if all else fails get a new hard drive?Do you know the hardware specs on that laptop? You might be disappointed if you do succeed in loading Win XP on it. It might not be as fast as you think.i would format the hdd, do you have the original win 98 boot setup disk/floppy. you might be able to format using that and then install win xp fresh. if not just fit a new hdd. If you own the upgrade CD, then you can only install XP if another operating system is currently installed. If you own the full version of XP, then Windows 98 is not necessary. Let us know which CD you have, and we'd be happy to walk you through this.

Flame Quote
If you own the upgrade CD, then you can only install XP if another operating system is currently installed.
Flame
Not quite true. You can install a clean version from an upgrade CD with no OS present. WinXP will ask you to insert an install CD from a previous and supported OS such as Win98 as proof of previous ownership.
If you don't have a 98 CD or similar, use Hijackthis or similar to stop NAV dead in it's tracks and reboot.

Upgrades are definitely not recommended!!!!

| |
