Solve : W98 Desktop icons only work in safe mode.?

Answer» <html><body><br/><br/>I run W98 on a 4 <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/year-247323" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about YEAR">YEAR</a> old Compaq desktop (my own).  Celeron 466Mhz chip, 64Meg Memory, 7.857 Gig disk.<br/><br/>Re-installed all the software from the Compaq restore disk.<br/><br/>One day I started and was informed to start in <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/safe-634049" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about SAFE">SAFE</a> Mode - can't rember upsetting the PC on closing before.<br/><br/>Started in Safe Mode and then closed down - started again in Normal Mode BUT on clicking any of the desktop icons they "blink" as if to say they are about go to the program I need but never get there - no other error messages.<br/><br/>By holding F8 at boot-up and selecting Safe Mode the PC is fine and I can open all the programs - run defrag and scandisk etc.<br/><br/>Any <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/suggestions-1233853" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about SUGGESTIONS">SUGGESTIONS</a> as I don't want to format the C drive and lose some very valuable data in files which are too large to go onto a 3.5" floppy.<br/><br/>Any ideas for restoring health would be most welcome.<br/><br/>Regards,<br/><br/>TioBasilio.You <a href="https://interviewquestions.tuteehub.com/tag/could-410026" style="font-weight:bold;" target="_blank" title="Click to know more about COULD">COULD</a> try DLoading and installing TweakUI for Win98...<br/>It has a bunch of tweaking and customising tools...<br/>Included under the "Repair" tab is a fix for missing/broken icons.
