Solve : Win98 Safe Mode Help?

Answer»

Hello;
I am attempting to reload my OLD win98 2e OS due to a ongoing boot problem that has been occuring for some time now. Currently my pc will only start up in safe mode which there are various options such as -Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/Network Support, and a few others.....

Here's my problem. I have another PC on my home LAN which i would like to back up my data files to before wiping out my hard drive with the reinstall of the 98 OS. However, in Safe Mode my win 98 pc has no network connectivity so i can not access the hard drive (which i have previously been able to do under normal operations). I'm sure i need to load certain drivers, etc or kind of manually start the network devices in the safe mode in order to MAKE the connection.....I'm just not sure how to go about this.

Thanks for your help.

DaveM

...and you've tried booting the 98 machine with "Safe Mode with Networking" and it doesn't have the drivers loaded for the network card?

Another option is to pull the drive out of the problem machine, slave it to an existing one, pull the data you want off and reinstall the drive, format & reinstall 98.

Alan <>< Alan;
Thanks for the reply. LET me just say that when i select SafeMode w/Network support and WINDOWS boots up I go to winexplorer and in my folder search under networks I cant access my other PC, nor get email when I open outlook or connect to any web sites, yet my other pc (this one) has network connectivity.

The win98 pc was working fine Friday night (net work that is). I also have a flash/pen drive in the back USB port but it won't recognize that either. Thinking I could just cc on to this my data (not a lot 500 meg or so). The device mgr shows the "other port" and usb symbol but does not identify the sankisk item.

Your idea on removing hard drive was passed on to me by another online support person it's just I don't have the confidence (or may connection tools) to accomplish that so was trying to figure out how to get my lan connection working.
