Solve : map home directory?

Answer»

hi all, im trying to map home directory via samba which i can accomplish but is there a SIMPLE way to map it to something other than the DEFAULT Z: ? i REALIZE it can be done manually thru the net use command but im WONDERING if there is something simple that can be done in smb.conf to use a different drive letter for each user everytime he/she connects? the client workstation is running XP and server is Fedora Redhat.....your insight would be much appreciated!!

rhoadsYou can't specify that on the server, because if any of the clients are already using the drive letter for another mapping it would mess things up.Yes, absolutely you can do this. Use a netlogon script. See >here< for more info and examples.

Solve : need help installing DSL on a custom build?

Answer»

I've got this system I'm installing DSL (d**n Small Linux) on for my BROTHER. The boot CD works fine, however, I have no clue how to create a EXT2 or EXT3 partition on the 15GB IDE Maxtor hard drive. [EDIT] I get an error when I try to install even though I MANAGED to use cfdisk to create a partition, the error is something about a "BLOCK Special Device", the drive is what there TALKING about i think. any idea what this means?

The desktops specs are

Compaq Deskpro socket 370 motherboard (unknown model, unless someone knows how to make linux tell me hardware info)
socket 370 Intel Celeron Coppermine, 700MHz/66FSB/128K L2
512MB PC133 SDRAM
15GB ATA66 or ATA100 Maxtor HDD (Don't know which speed it is, shouldn't matter with an OS like DSL)
52X Samsung ATA66 CD-ROM drive
32MB WinFast MX64 AGP 2x GPU
235W AOpen PSU (Was an AOpen PII barebone, I removed the PII motherboard in favor of the newer socket 370 board)
and lastly, it has some D-Link 10/100 PCI NIC I installed in there. Dunno the model. It doesn't matter though, I'll let my brother figure out how to get that working since he's so eager to learn linux.

Thanks in advance for any help.Never mind, after several hours of toying with DSL I got it to format and install, thanks anyway though. Admins feel free to delete this thread, for some reason I can't delete it.

Solve : GRUB - Toshiba boot loader?

Answer»

Quote from: masmace on April 08, 2010, 06:10:05 PM

From what I've read on the web Ubuntu now has an EASY feature that installs it safely inside of windows http://www.windowslifestyle.com/index.php/2010/03/install-ubuntu-inside-windows-7/ The Toshiba screen will not be affected either way. I'm not really in a hurry to start using Ubuntu, I've used it before and right now I'm just playing games on Windows.

I'm probably going to test Lucid on my system first before I install and see if it works alright with my hardware, and if not I'll probably report the problems to the Ubuntu community and the manufacturer. After, of-course, seeing if there is any way I can get it to work. If it doesn't work, I'll down-grade to karmic or any other version that works (sometimes they do). AND MAYBE --> I'll use G Parted or something similar to partition my drive, then I'll back up important files ( I already knew to do this, but its great that people have to repeat it, though I understand it is that important), and lastly I'll install Ubuntu 10.04 keeping in mind everything you guys have said.
Yes that will work really well for you. The feature of installing inside Windows is for people who want to try but maybe not keep it. If you decide you like it then you can install it on your hard drive.

I'm glad you've figured it out hello, i found this topic looking for xp bootloader problems.
may i offer my recent (3 days ago) experience with the latest ubuntu distro.

as a preface, i've been trying out linux since at least 5, and before that red hat, because it is such a great idea. unfortunately, i find i still have to do my work on windows. reluctantly moved up to xp from wonderful W2K about 4 years ago. and now considering a 7 install, but will wait a year or two for a service pack to come out.

vista was like living in a police state, and i ended up giving away a vista laptop for which there were essential XP drivers unavailable. so i am not a windows booster, it's just i know how to keep the whole creaky mess moving along.

so, after a nice painfree wubi install of ubuntu 10.x on its own TIDY, last place partition on (hd0),
---moments like that, you have to love linux---but then, the update machine roared into life, and instead of letting me choose which updates i wanted (as it used to), it listed over 300 undates, and then in a flashing window ontop of the update app, it sternly warned that GRUB 2 was the latest thing, and if i didn't get it RIGHT NOW, then some of these 300 updates would be OUT OF SYNC.

so, even though i knew better, i forgot that i knew better, and i allowed ubuntu update to do what it wanted, including install GRUB 2, as part of the initial update.

so now, 30 hours of work later, and a total clean factory OS cd reinstall of win XP, and format of the laptop harddrive (erasing 6 existing well filled partitions),

this error message is still appearing

.....blah blah x numbers
GRUB rescue>

at least i have found a way to avoid the GRUB error and to load the xp OS, by making the boot order
1. cd
2. inside laptop HD
3. ext usb hd
4, 5, 6, usb keys, lan etc.

but if i change the boot order and put the ext usb hd above the inside HD, then the GRUB rescue> error still appears.

i read up on GRUB RESCUE and all the handy CLI commands that should have worked. but only 2 did anything to move the caret, and they did not rescue the boot.

so, i'm going to reflash the bios next thing. after that???

ubuntu 10.x isn't quite there yet, this time either.

Well said. Vista is not like living a police state. I'm sure anybody who actually lived in a police state can testify that there isn't a form they can fill out to stop it. UAC can be disabled in less then a minute, yet people constantly complain anyway without actually investigating that option, or even stop and realize that the analogy is completely flawed.

a Police state is a country that maintains repressive control over the people by means of police (thought police (1984) or secret police, etc).

However, Vista is not in control of you. You are in control of it, and it is in control of what programs run. Basically, you are the BENEVOLENT dictator in said police state, and you say what programs live and which programs die and what they are allowed to do when they are born. By default, you have your police set to ask you about everything they do. "we found this program sneaking about where you put Admin access only signs! Should we give him admin access or execute him on the spot?(Yes/No)". If you don't control your program populace, you quickly have a "revolution" where malware and spyware manage to take control. Then your decisions are irrelevant.

Analogies between real world historical events, forms of GOVERNMENT and Computing are never apt and are always flawed. In fact I quite recall that ONE member(not sure if it was this forum or not) who stated quite succinctly that The "Browser wars" were going to be bigger then both the world wars put together. I wanted to punch him in the face, because I failed to see any correlation between wars that killed hundreds of millions and involved nearly the entire world, and a couple software programs and their popularity contest.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 06, 2010, 02:24:50 PM
Vista is not like living a police state.
Agreed. I use Vista on a regular basis and have found there to be nothing wrong with it. If you don't like UAC then disable it. It is true that Vista will perform slower than Windows 7 in general but it is still a decent OS and has no real problems (unlike ME which did have real probs) with it's general usage.

Solve : Kubuntu GPU Freeze?

Answer»

Hi there,

I installed Kubuntu from the text based installer.
It was painless, like it should be in my opinion. I did all my partitioning with Puppy Linux though, simply because it's quick and easy to boot up as a live CD and provides Graphic Interface to do it.

Anyways, I edited GRUB (also from puppy since I'm familiar with it), and booted into Kubuntu.
I downloaded all the bug fixes first, then it updated the rest of the "Security Updates."

All of a sudden, it FROZE, completely. My keyboard was non-responsive and mouse that usually changes through colors froze at a certain color.

I read on the Ubuntu (or Kubuntu, can't remember) forums that the symptoms of a GPU Freeze are pretty much the same as the ones I'm experiencing. I checked the xorg log files and can't find a backtrace, another symptom I think.

I got the nVidia drivers for my 9800 GTX+. Once I fixed the extremely small, illegible text problem, I thought that this might fix the GPU Freeze. Turns out it didn't. I've been switching between video drivers and none of them seem to fix the problem. I'd like to keep the nVidia drivers, because of compositing. While I mention that, could that be the root of my problem? Maybe a bug in KWin I believe it's called? But it still happens without compositing, so I don't think so.

The freezes are RANDOM, so I haven't been able to pinpoint any specific instances where it will freeze. If I remember right, that is another GPU Freeze symptom.

Has anyone had this kind of a problem and would anyone have any RECOMMENDATIONS to help fix it (or at least diagnose it)? I have the xorg.conf file as well I can edit.

I'm really looking forward to using Kubuntu, but I won't be able to use it for fear that it will be unreliable if this keeps happening.

By the way, I'm not a beginner to Linux, but I'm not an expert either. I have no problem with Terminal or Console work either.

Solve : How to make a Linux distro?

Answer»

Hello, everyone.

I'm interested in making a Linux distro, and have already used remastersys to make an .iso. I have the system configured the way that I like it, but before deciding to PUBLISH the distro, what source needs to go with it per the GPL (it mentions source go with the binaries)?

Is it like?:

1. New files only (if I build stuff on the respun Mint/Ubuntu) I can distribute source & runnable stuff
2. Or the whole Linux (everything--this would be long and tedious)
3. Or can I borrow from Mint's source list?
4. Or something in between?

As you can see, I'm rather confused here and need help on it. ANY responses would be **HIGHLY** appreciated. Thanks. Replying to my own post to answer this question for ANYONE else who might have it. APPARENTLY, source applicable to the distribution needs to be included with the distro so that it is truly "open source" and OTHERS can look at it. So, basically, in order to build one, source does indeed need to be included.

Solve : How do you stop dillo in DSL from starting everytime you boot??

Answer»

I loaded DSL and I keep getting the dillo screen at startup and I would like to turn that off.

I'm NEW with DSL and it doesn't explain the process of doing that very well. Could someone please explain it step by step?

Thanks!Old post but I was curious about this one so THOUGHT I'd at least post what I found.

Quote

DSL has a few tools to help produce your preffered startup environment. .xinitrc lists PROGRAMS that automatically start after X WINDOWS begins. You can also start non-Window programs by editing .bash_profile and then adding .bash_profile to .filetool.lst. You can even load additional modules and system-specific or required FILES by editing /opt/bootlocal.sh (and then adding it to your filetoool.lst).

Solve : monitor problem with both Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.04?

Answer»

I'm trying to boot off these two discs and after each one displays the splash screen, the monitor (which is a crt monitor) KICKS into standby mode and doesn't come back.

It doesn't happen when I boot off the hard drive into Windows Vista

It doesn't happen with my Back Track 3.0 Live disc either.

I tried switching from my video card to onboard video in cmos, but no good.

I tried removing the video card and plugging directly into the onboard video, but no good.

I tried starting with only one ram module at a time, no good.

I tried removing all other peripherals, no good.

I actually tried using another monitor too, but no good.

I tried booting the discs from a DIFFERENT drive as WELL, same thing..

The two discs work fine in my other older computer...

Can't figure this one out..Even the Fedora forums have TURNED up no help on this issue. I just burned the latest Kubuntu and the same thing happens.

The previous versions of these distros work fine.. What these discs have in common is that they are all the latest version... lack of driver support MAYBE ?

I went ahead and just went with a previous version of Kubuntu..

Solve : setting up linux environment on window xp?

Answer»

hi, i would like to SET up linux environment on window xp. i know that there are vmware and CYGWIN but i'm not very sure if that is needed for my purposes.

What I wanna do is to practise linux command (like wat we do in putty), make some installation through linux. e.g, installing mysql, php but not on the live site..I would like to be proficient in it. being a developer, this would be a great advantage.

Your help will be very much appreciated. tkstake a look here for some links to get unix tools for windows. you can get the BASH shell here. though its an old VERSION, its good enough for practice. otherwise, just USE cygwin, or microsoft services for windows.Or install a Linux distro in VMWare or VirtualPC.
or don't even need to practice shells at all. Get a programming language like Python/Perl. Most of the THINGS that are done with bash + shell tools can be done with just one good language.hey ppl, thanks for the suggestion. i will look into it ..

Solve : Installing Linux to Flash Drive?

Answer»

I'm trying to install Linux to a flash drive, but I keep getting the error message "no bootable partition in table". Or it asks me for a command line entry. Which version of Linux?
Have you done this before?
Puppy is easy to USB ify.
Have a look at UNetbootin: http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/

It will write an ISO to a flash drive or even download and install a distro of your CHOICE AUTOMATICALLY!THANK you! I am now more confused than ever!!!!!!!!
When I downloaded that PROGRAM, I got the prompt:
ubnkern initrid=/ubninit_ (blinking cursor). What am I supposed to type
there?
Linux often has command line prompts to go further, and I have
no idea what to type in, making the program USELESS to me!Why don't you just try installing Puppy Linux? A reference: http://www.puppylinux.com/flash-puppy.htm

Solve : deliting a xp partion?

Their you will find the option delete this partition, create NEW partition, etc.well wont that mess up the ubuntu GRUB thoWhy not just overwrite the XP partition with a linux filesystem?

You might want to edit the menu.lst to take Windows off the list and re-run install-grub AFTERWARDS, as I've no idea what effect it will have trying to boot from a non-boot filesystem as if it was Windows.

Solve : Linux compatability??

Answer»

I've been thinking about kicking Windows for several months now, and Linux looks nice, but I'm not too sure how compatible it is with my existing software.

I primarily use my PC to surf the INTERNET and play games (rarely online). I've heard rumors of emulators that let you play Windows-only games on Linux, but I haven't been able to find much to CONFIRM this. I've read that Linux is more efficient at using available system resources, which sounds nice. Unfortunately, I've also heard that Linux was a command-line operating system, which is one of my biggest concerns; I'm lost without a GUI...

Basically, I'm looking for a solid Windows alternative: something that I can use to free myself from Micro$oft's iron grip, but which won't have any impact on the things I enjoy most...

Nobody I know has Linux, so I have no example to play around with, and no way of knowing what I'm getting myself into. I certainly don't want to hose up my computer: it took long enough to get it running this smoothly in the first place! I have a few old hard-drives that I saved from my last PC, so I could install Linux on one of those. My biggest concern is that I'd be stepping into a completely unknown world, and I'd be much more comfortable if I had a guide to take me up this river, without which I'd probably find myself stuck on a sandbar, or downstream without a paddle...

So, those of you who have Linux, can it be adapted to work flawlessly with programs designed for just Windows?
Can Linux use Direct-X 9 or 10?
Can it look and function like Windows (without the annoying bugs)?
What else should I know about Linux before making a switch? (Does it have any weird quirks I should watch out for?)Quote

Definitely not so.

I think you'll have to wait a bit longer. Running some Windows apps on Linux can be done, but it is not a no-brainer.

Basically, I'm looking for a solid Windows alternative

Every Linux enthusiast has his own favorite distribution, but for Linux newbies coming in from the XP/Vista world, I don't see how you could recommend any other distribution besides PCLinuxOs or Linux Mint KDE.

http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_ionfiles&Itemid=28

http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=28

Yes, PCLinuxOS and Mint are more user-friendly than Ubuntu, Fedora, and all the rest. And for people who are used to the XP/Vista GUI, KDE is easier to learn and offers more familiar functionality.Crunchbang Linux http://crunchbanglinux.org/

CrunchBang Linux is an Ubuntu based distribution featuring the lightweight Openbox window manager and GTK+ applications. The distribution is developed from a minimal Ubuntu install and has been designed to offer a good balance of speed and functionality.

Also it comes with a lot of GUI config tools and the SVN package manager, so installing stuff is a cinch!

But when installing stuff be careful what you go to install, for example if you install a KDE application like Amarok, you'll suddenly find it wants to install the whole KDE desktop, which completely defeats the point of the OpenBox desktop which seems to like Gnome applications in preference to KDE.

You can still play games on Linux, Wine-Doors is a package specifically targeted for doing that... However, their are loads of alternative pretty good 3D games already on linux, namely.

If you have an ATI graphics card check the Wikipedia on how to install the FGLRX graphics driver before performing any graphic card driver updates or you could find yourself getting caught out.

It caught me out and I had to do a few re-install's before I twigged what I was doing wrong.. I wasn't reading the manual http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page

Solve : GRUB - Fixmbr?

Answer»

GRUB:Where is GRUB located? Will deleting the Ubuntu partition get rid of grub?

Fixmbr(windows recovery CONSOLE): What does fixmbr do? Should I use fixmbr before or after I delete the Ubuntu partition? Will it work?

My goal here is to get Windows 7 boot loader when my SYSTEM starts instead of GRUB.

Windows 7 located in C: (Boot, Primary partition) / Ubuntu located on a separate primary partition, \Device\HarddiskVolume1 (boot device). Any more information just ask.

I may have to ask about fixmbr in microsoft forum but any information or advice is greatly appreciated, thank you. Quote

Where is GRUB located?
There are different stages of the grub. Stage 1 is located in the master boot record thats on the boot SECTOR of your hard drive. The boot sector is physically located on the first sector of your hard drive. Stage 2 is usually at /boot/grub in the root partition and can physically located at just about any part of the Ubuntu partition.

Quote
Will deleting the Ubuntu partition get rid of grub?
kinda
It will get rid of the useful part of the grub loader - the list of options to choose from. Grub will still be on the master boot record and you will most likely see: "Grub ERROR 22" and you will not be able to boot into windows.

Quote
What does fixmbr do?
It fixes the master boot record. It will replace the data that the grub has written to the mbr with the windows boot loader.

Quote
Should I use fixmbr before or after I delete the Ubuntu partition?
I'd do it after.

Quote
Will it work?
Sure. Although, you may not even have to run the command. First, try the "Startup Repair" option from the Windows DVD. If that doesn't work, then go into the command prompt and type in cd\ and press enter to get to the root of c. At the c prompt type in bootrec.exe /fixmbr and press enter. Awesome, thank you. Startup repair didn't work; however, bootrec.exe /fixmbr worked like a charm. Thanks for the advice and the REASSURANCE (which was what I really needed : )

Solve : Help!! Stop the Restarts!!?

Answer»

Please someone Help!

I have a forum thread at;

But am posting here as I'm desperately looking for as much help on the matter as possible.
My original post;

Quote

I'm not entirely new to linux but still have alot to learn so please be patient with me if a say something stupid.

I'm having major probs I've been trying to get a multiboot set up going with different linux distros and Windows 7.

For some reason my computer is having RANDOM reboots. This happens with various distros so I don't think it specific to the distro. even booting to a live CD will do it sometimes. It doesn't appear to happen on Windows 7 though so I'm thinking it is one of three things;

1)Faulty Hardware, have tested the RAM & CPU ETC and found no prob plus can run demanding games on Windows 7 perfectly fine so am less inclined to think that this is it.
2)Hardware incompatibility with Linux in general, not sure on this don't know a lot about it. Will list my hardware below.
3)Problems with ext4 fs, I'm thinking this is unlikely but with Win 7 and my Linux Distros being partition separately on the same HDD the only DIFFERENCE I see is the fs (NTFS & ext4).

I could be completely off on all of the above so if anyone can shed any light on to this please, help me. I really don't go back to just windows and let my windows only friends say I told you so...

My hardware:
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-M55SLI-S4 F10
AMD Athlon
x2 64 Dual Core Processor
Nvidea GeForce 8600 GT
1x 320 GB SATA HDD

1x 500 GB SATA HDD
PATA DVD Reader/Writer

I am now just running Debain - Lenny.Quote

Are you installing the linux distros on a separate hard drive?

When the restarts happen with the live cds are you accessing the hard drive(s)?

Do the restarts ever happen during installation?

Solve : Terminal Server Services for Linux Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop?

Answer»

Wondering if anyone knows of a Terminal Server Service Package for Linux that might RUN on Ubuntu 8.04?

I want to put my Windows 2000 Server to rest and have migrated everything to Linux except for the ability to run the system remotely through Terminal Services.

I checked into the remote desktop of Ubuntu and its actually configured for VNC port 5900. Tried setting the port manually to 3389 to see if I could RDP to the Linux Ubuntu box and it would not work.

Based on past experiences with VNC getting hacked, I STAY clear of running it through the WWW.

RDP has been solid with no problems on the old 2000 server that I retired. Hoping there is a Linux Terminal solution that will work like RDP for remote access and secure.

Thanksits called Telnet. A more secured version of "Telnet" would be SSH. check your distribution documentation for how to turn them on.Can you describe what you want to do which you used to do with Remote Desktop Connection?

If you simply want to login to the linux host, then as Ghotdog said telnet, rlogin and ssh do that. If you want to remote display GUIs back to the machine you're sitting in front of, then that's a different story. (BTW, ONE of the best ssh programs for Windows is called putty)

If the machine you're sat in front of is another unix system, then just set the DISPLAY on the Ubuntu box to POINT at your system, and start the GUI. If you want to do this over the internet then use the -X option to ssh and the sshd on your Ubuntu box will automatically set the DISPLAY for you.

If you're sat in front of a Windows system, then download and install Xming on the windows system and then you can either login to your Ubuntu box via XDM if your on the local network, or if you want to use a more secure method over the internet then configure Xming to use putty and xterm, and you can X display your GUI back to the windows box via sshd as you would on a unix box. Thanks Banjo67

Linux GUI passed to a Windows Machine over the web is definately what I want to do. Just like RDP to a Windows based machine to authenticate securely with encrypted data I want to do the same with Linux.

I have used Putty in the past with winscp for my FTP server project back in college, so I will definately use it for ssh.

I will have to check into that Xming .... and yes I will have to configure Xming to use Putty and xterm to x display the GUI

Might be asking more questions if I get stumped. Thanks for pointing the way to make this happen.

Solve : Installing OS - Hangs?

Answer»

No matter what Linux distro I try to install.. at some point of the installation.. it always hangs.. would this be a hard drive probleM?

I'm installing from live CD. As I know Live CD never install file to H.D. I think you can check with the CD ROM / CD

I had a problem installing Mint from a Live CD and it turned out to be the hard drive. It had been used in raid and Mint wouldn't install. I replaced the drive and EVERY thing worked as it should. I am assuming that after you load the live CD that there is an install tab on the desk top that you click on to get it to install. My guess is that there is a problem with the hard drive.are you sure you have a good install disc? I prefer to use a TORRENT, as the iso is much less likely to be BAD having been confirmed more extensively than a straight down load....

you might try to reformat the HDD in live mode, install Gparted with the package manager [synaptic] & reformat to ext4, if you are trying to use one of the current distros [version of linux]

Solve : Ubuntu: how do I connect it to dialup internet?

Answer»

I'm reading the tutorials and they tell me that I need to go System//Administration//Networking in order to get to the modem settings. Though on my linux distro these settings don't exist. I am using the most current ubuntu, 10.0.4. How do I connect it to dial up internet?

Thank you So I can't go System//Administration//Networking. As the Networking option doesn't seem to exist in the administration cluster.

I am able to go to Places and Network. This gives me the screen shown below. Showing the "windows network" it says access denied or something along those lines when I try to click on it.

Thankyou

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]I think the answer may be "you don't" At least, not from the software that you have on the installation CD. You need a piece of software called wvdial, which I don't think you have: try the command "whereis wvdial" to check. I suspect Ubuntu assumes you will be doing a lot of downloading, unlike distros that come on a DVD, so it's not much use if you don't have broadband.

If you can't get it for Ubuntu, you could always switch to a distro that definitely supports dial-up, like Fedora. Don't forget you need a real modem that connects to a serial port, not a winmodem that relies on software to drive it.
Quote from: DavidMcCann

Don't forget you need a real modem that connects to a serial port, not a winmodem that relies on software to drive it.

Can you substantiate that statement please?

I recently set a dial-up connection in Ubuntu 9.10 using a Conexant pci modem, it was what I would describe as a mini nightmare but probably due to my inexperience with Linux. After a successful struggle I found some very good info at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto

Here is a list of available drivers from which you may be able to download the appropriate driver once you have identified your modem.

Good luckThat's a useful LINK, DUSTY. It seems like Ubuntu has changed the policy on including wvdial. You still have the problem that if you need a big PROGRAM that isn't on the installation CD, it will take forever to download.

When I wrote about not using a pci-modem that needs a driver, I had your "mini-nightmare" in mind. A "real" modem doesn't need a driver on the computer: it just accepts commands and interprets them for itself.
Perhaps Wvdial is included in the later version(s) but when attempting the install of ver 9.10 and RUNNING ModemData the following, which might be of use to the Op, was displayed:

Quote
The dialer utility package WVDIAL does not appear to be installed on your System.
For Ubuntu users, there are at the bottom of http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/packages/ packages with the files necessary to install wvdial, with names like:
wvdial_jaunty_amd64.zip for x86_64, 64 bit bus systems.
wvdial_jaunty_i386.zip for 32 bit systems
wvdial_karmic_i386.zip for 32 bit systems
These are about 1 MB in size.

Instructions on how to install Wvdial from the downloaded .zip file follow.

In my CASE the required modem driver (k2.6.31_14_generic) was found at this site.

Hope the above helps the OP.

Solve : ubuntu wireless internet?

Answer»

Hey everyone,

I have ubuntu 8.10 with a lot of stuff and ya I won't go into that but my computer is connected to a linksys wrt150n wireless router. I KNOW wireless N has a stronger broadcast than any other wireless iteration but in my ubuntu session, it tells me my wireless signal has about one bar of signal. when I roll my cursor over it it says somewhere between 2-6% strength and the router is only in the room next to mine so I don't know what could be causing this. Any possible fixes for this problem would be happily accepted

Thanks in advance!First things first - if you have a 5Ghz range CORDLESS phone get rid of it or keep it as far out of the path of your Wireless N router and pc/laptop as possible. 2.4Ghz phones INTERFERED with Wireless G. 5.8Ghz phones interfere with Wireless N.

Keep in mind each wall the signal has to go through diminishes the signal distance by about 2 feet, up to 8 feet if it's GOING through the wall at a shallow angle.

But... you're only in the next room. How does the signal change if you go into the room where the router is?

If there are lots of wireless networks in your area have a look at what channel they're operating on and switch your router to one that isn't in use by other networks nearby (or is the least used of networks nearby).

A few THOUGHTS to get your started troubleshooting.
PhilAnother question. Does it work well? If so, maybe the Linux driver does not report the signal strenght correctly. Many Linux drivers are not tested in a laboratory where you have equipment to calibrate and verity everything. If it works good, leave it as it is.
But, you could have a broken antenna. That sometimes happens, but the device will work anyway at close range.
Right now I am on my neighbor's wireless instead of my own. He does hot have much signal here, but it works fine. I am using Puppy 4.1 and a realtek PCI wireless and I have not idea what the signal strength is, but I recall that in Windows it was very weak. Amd I have a wirell router close to me, but it does jnot seem to matter!

Solve : Connecting knoppix to xbox via FTP?

Answer»

Hey

I was wondering how I can make an FTP connection between my knoppix distro and 'Modded' xbox.

The Problem is, firstly I need to install and run a daemon service CALLED 'Lisa Daemon'. I wouldn't have a clue how to do that. (I'm new to linux based OS's)

Secondly The programs that set up FTP for a remote computer (or in this case my xbox) Don't seem to have the correct entry boxes that supply information to CONNECT to my xbox using a static IP address.

For example..

My xbox has a static IP of 10.1.1.5 (the IP doesn't matter what it's set as).
It's user name is xbox (default)
It's password is xbox (default)
Default gateway is 10.1.1.0
DNS doesn't need to be configured for xbox FTP
It has a DHCP setting also.

Problem is the stock FTP program in knoppix doesn't even mention half of these variables to enter.

Any HELP would be great thanksAre you connecting the Xbox to your computer via router or crossover cable?Straight-Through Cable, Yeah.

I can START the Lisa Daemon now.
Yet no matter how I configure the sftp program it doesn't want to coneect to my xbox.

I'll try a linux version of filezilla ftp maybe..Be SURE you have the xbox and your computer setup on the same subnet mask and such. Sorry for the bump but I've discovered the solution.

All I did was use a router.
Simple as that.

Solve : System Restore for Linux ( ISO or Ghost ) Imaging????

Answer»

Looking for a way to image my Linux systems and burn the image to DVD-R's. Currently I have one of my sytems set up with dual boot Windows 2000 / Fedora core 6 and use the Norton Ghost 2003 from within the Windows 2000 installation to image the entire hard drive with multiple partitions.

The problem with Ghost though is that it can not DETERMINE real data from empty space on the Linux partitions so even though Linux may be consuming say 6GB of 20GB and the drive is a 40GB Drive and Windows 2000 is consuming 3GB, the image ends up being spanned to DVD-Rs amounting to 23GB, 14GB of which is empty HD space on the Linux partitions which is very wasteful.

The Windows 2000 installation on this system is pretty much just there to support imaging of the system.

I'd like to be able to create a bootable RESTORE CD or DVD set for a clean Linux build vs this hokey dual boot solution which works but is very sloppy in that it is very wasteful.

So what solutions are out there for this need? Is it a MATTER of creating an ISO image of this Linux system and buring that to CD or DVD? If so what to use and how.

Thanks

Knoppix is the ideal recovery CD for linux, and I've just seen that there's a dump/restore tool for ext2/ext3 on SourceForge http://sourceforge.net/projects/dump/ or you could just use tar.

If you have a remote system available then its simple to just boot from Knoppix then restore VIA TCP from the remote system's tape/disk/DVD.

I've not tried ejecting the Knoppix CD whilst booted from it, but I guess if you've cached everyting you need into memory using sticky bits you might be able to build dump/restore into a Knoppix CD which you can then eject to insert the rest of the DVDs with the data on them?

If you try this, let me know how it goes?Quote from: DaveLembke on April 11, 2009, 12:31:44 PM

Ghost 2003 Quote from: DaveLembke on April 12, 2009, 12:12:00 AM
Ghost 2003

I asked if you had used compression in Ghost also you didn't say what distro (version) of Linux you are using, and importantly, what filesystem you are using on the linux partition. Ghost 2003 compressed image mode works with ext2 and ext3 but may have trouble with later filesystems such as reiserfs (used with SuSe Linux)

Symantec Knowledge BASE article containing Ghost & Linux compatibility tables:

http://tinyurl.com/4wrdlu

Thanks Dias for the info and tinyurl link to the compatability of Ghost 2003 with specific distros, and sorry for the lack there of of info in my prior post.

I was using Dual Boot Windows 2000 Pro and Fedora Core 5 when I experienced this issue. As far as partiton type I am thinking it was not the normal Linux Partition but a more secure partition type...Might have been XFS

My Recent build is 2000 Pro and Ubuntu 8.04 Desktop Distro. I havent tried ghosting yet with this build. Maybe I will have better luck given that the default file system is used with Ubuntu than my Fedora core 5 build of the prior system that ate up DVDs with empty space burned to them.

Solve : How to get free dial up to work in puppy!?

Answer»

I just installed Puppy on a computer and i am trying to get dial up working if you have any HELP that would be great. Please help guys!!!!!!Which version of Puppy?
What kind of modem?
Some of the "FREE" dial up services REQUIRE you to use special programs that only work in Windows. Took a look around and not much help on the puppy forum.
Getting Puppy on the Internet is so much easier if your connection is with a standard Network Adapter, Ethernet.
Dial up presents problems with internal modems. Too many kinds. Some are HSP, others are DSP and some are called 'Winmodems', which would make you think they only work in windows. They have different chip SETS, which means it can be harder to FIND drivers. Anyway. Puppy does a good job of trying hard. Here is a composite screen shot of version 4 of the Puppy Linux system trying to find a internal dial-up modem.

I would recommend getting a good used external modem. That way you do not need special drivers to make it work . Years ago that was all we had. Thanks I will do that.

Solve : Help Writing Scripts?

Answer»

I am very new to Unix but I am learning. I am working on script writing. I know a lot of perl but as far as bash and awk and all the other scripting languages that is what I am trying to learn.

I want to create a script that when it is RAN it will execute the last command to display who has logged into my SYSTEM. I want to capture all these users and display how many times they have logged in.

What is the best language to use and where do I begin. I need some help getting started. I am completely lost.

Thank youYou know a lot of Perl, so why don't we start from there. It is mentioned you need to use the last command to display users logged in. therefore, you can use Perl's system CALL commands to call the "last" command.
see : perldoc -f system

Besides using system() command in Perl, there are also others like, exec. Please read up your Perl documentation for further INFORMATION. You would also need to get the results of those system calls to a variable or something for displaying the output, so i will leave it to you to find out how.

Alternatively, just use the shell plus some other text tools, such as cut , sort, uniq etc to find how many users logged in
One example.
Code: [Select]last | cut -f1 -d" "|sort -u

The above is just to show you how you can chain up useful shell tools to do what you want. For me, I would just use awk
Code: [Select]last | awk '!_[$1]++{print $1}'
could you explain the awk a little more. I am just trying to spread my wings with scripting lanuages. I do not know any bash c shell or anything of that sort and I believe it will be helpful to learn. How would I store the output to a variable?

Thank youQuote from: Circuit_Girl on March 19, 2009, 08:02:03 PM

don't use C shell. use bash if you can. how to store variable
Code: [Select]var=$(last | .....)
or
Code: [Select]var=`last | .....` #note the backticks, not single quote
anyway, please look at my signature for bash scripting guide, as well as some awk resources.I want to see who owns more files me or root? I do not want to include directories in my search. I want it to output two lines...root (# of files) myusername (# of Files). What command tells who owns a file? and where is a good place to start?

I am experimenting with perl and awk right now but I am not eliminating other options.

Thank you awk is a pattern recognition language. It is very powerful. I recommend PURSUING it, but I'd spend a little more time with shell script commands. Get used to how you can use them before you go on to awk.I was going to use find. If I am in a directory bla/bla/crap and I want to start my search from the root how do I do that? is it find / -name myusername ? How do I count all of them?Quote from: Circuit_Girl on March 19, 2009, 07:03:08 PM

Solve : Ubuntu user password. How can I reset it??

Ubuntu user password. How can I reset it?
Yes, I did install Ubunru 8.1 all the way on my desktop PC.
But I forgot the password for my main account. I can get in allright, but can no do anything that requires permission.
So, do I have to re install all the way?
Is there a to use the Boot CD to reset the password?a) to reset an ordinary user's password

su to root and use passwd username

b) to reset the root password

I trust this this is your computer or you have the owner's permission to do this, but its COMMON knowledge so what the heck

boot from a recovery CD, or download Knoppix and burn that to a CD and boot from it, then mount the root filesystem and edit the /etc/shadow file. Reomve the encrypted password from the root account, and then reboot.

Next time you login as root there will be no password, although you'll probably have to hit ENTER when propmted for the password. So, folks, if you don't want anybody to do this on your system, disable booting from CDROM or pen drive or floppy in the BIOS, and set a (strong) BIOS password.

Windows has the potential to become very secure, because they do not have to maintain compatibility with thousands of programs that are GPL.The windows programmers can work under one roof and keep their work private. So they should have an advantage.
But time will tell.Quote from: Geek-9pm on April 15, 2009, 10:31:15 PM
because they do not have to maintain compatibility with thousands of programs that are GPL.

But they have to make sure that popular programs, which often do the wrong thing still work in newer windows versions.

This is the reason programs become "incompatible"- They change some undocumented or broken behaviour in some obscure DLL, and then suddenly they discover that company X's popular, thousand dollar application, Y was depending on undocumented behaviour.

This is like when programs would assume that a handle was a 2-byte integer. They would litterally declare their handle variables as a short. the accepted method was to use the appropriate typedefs in windows.h- and they found out why when they tried to PORT their applications to windows 95.

Half the work of making a program "compatible" with a newer version of windows- in fact half of the investigation to find to cause, is done by MS, NOT the company who created to program.

So don't say that MS doesn't make any effort to keep programs compatible. Somehow I think stepping through the dissassembly for DOOM to make it run on windows 95 (this is MS, NOT ID software- ID software had the money from their sales and probably didn't give a rat's *censored*).

http://blogs.msdn.com/oldnewthing/

This is why they create APIs rather then just spell out what behaviour should occur. this way, if they want to change the behaviour, they change the API, and then all the programs that were written correctly to use the API rather then make assumptions about the location of folders and registry keys will use the new method without recompiling a DLL.

Besides- Linux doesn't maintain very good compatibility between distributions. Half the time you have to make sure your kernel is correct, your compiling with the proper version of GCC, your not using some switch that bugs out with the NEWEST version of the C precompiler.

I was surprised too when I found that Ubuntu makes it so easy.
Years ago I have a dial-up ISP using Red Hat. The gave some free space to each user. I could log in with a terminal to upload stuff to my page. I was surprised by how I could move up the dir tree and see the names of other users. I could not get into their folders, but just the idea that I could go up one level and see them! Hard to believe! Just knowing the user names on a server is a security issue.

Hey, now with that insight,

This can easily be fixed chmod go-r /users

The point is that Unix systems are more secure when connected to the internet, and as no-one wants to spend $2 million on a server only to find that they have to scrap it because someone accidentally mis-spelt to login shell for root, so they have been designed with the concept that if you physically break in to the server room at the company's HQ then you can reset the root password.

Unfortunately, for a small linux system at home, you don't have a security guard patrolling your lounge to check your younger brother isn't hacking, but at least if you change the locks on the front door your ex shouldn't be able to hack it as easy as they would a Windows system on the internet.Good point, banjo67xxx. There is a supposition built into the Linux ethos (isn't there?) often misplaced I guess, that Linux system administrators (that's you, if you run a Linux box) know what they are doing, know how to find out the things that they don't know yet, and know what they need to do to maximize security. Encrypt their DATA, prevent booting from CD, access control for the server room, whatever. On the other hand, you cannot make that assumption at all about Windows users.
If set up properly, LINUX is far superior to windows for security.

Go to
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/10/22/security_report_windows_vs_linux/
to get an independent assessment.ahh, of course- in person it really doesn't matter how secure it is.

it's the internet facing vulnerabilities.

Anyone recall that red-hat had a backdoor accidentally left in? I think it was "pinata" and I forget the password. They have of course fixed this, I think it was in one distro for a very short time.

regardless, if I was going to create a server, I would definitely go with some form of Linux, if only because I don't want to have to pay for a server version of windows, or fiddle about with IIS or something. Also because I haven't done anything really with Linux.

Solve : Script to Check File Ownership?

Answer»

I want to see who owns more files me or root? I do not want to include directories in my search. I want it to output two lines...root (# of files) myusername (# of Files). What command tells who owns a file? and where is a good place to start?

I am experimenting with perl and AWK right now but I am not eliminating other options.

Thank you Quote from: Circuit_Girl on March 26, 2009, 06:25:08 PM

What command tells who owns a file? and where is a good place to start?
man find.I did that I found i have to do something like Code: [SELECT] find / -name -root I do not know how to count the entries and start from root I think find / does that. I am not sure?i meant find -user
To determine how many files there are in the current directory, put in ls -1 | wc -l.

To accomplish what I think you want, play around with this one line command which you can modify & turn into a script.

ls -lR|grep -v ^d|grep YOURUSERNAME|wc -l

NOTES:
ls -lR (that's an "L") cap. R for recursive
grep -v ^d will exclude directories
grep YOURUSERNAME includes all files with your username
wc -l (that's an "L") will count each line & DISPLAY the count.Quote from: BKDC on March 27, 2009, 03:22:15 PM
ls -lR|grep -v ^d|grep YOURUSERNAME|wc -l
the above method may not be accurate as you might have owner as someone other than root, and the GROUP is root.
Code: [Select]ls -lR|awk '/^d/&&$3=="root"{s+=1}END{print s}'

Solve : Need help with Linux Mint.?

Answer»

I installed Linux Mint on an old computer that had ME on it. The first problem I had was I didn't give it a password ( In Windows I never use a password.) and now it wont let me in. I plan to reload it and give it a password that I will remember. The next problem when loading the system it asked for internet information that I didn't UNDERSTAND. When I load Windows on a PC at the end I just put in the Earthlink disk and do as I am told. How do you set up internet in Linux Mint? As you can tell I am new to Linux and would like to learn how to use it. I know that I can get drivers from Intel to make the mother board work. Will Linux Mint play DVDs or do I have to load other programs for that. I don't know any thing about this stuff. I need all the help I can get with this stuff. Thanks for your time and information that you people give so freely. a) The Linux Mint forums http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=24306&p=142114 say that you can use sudo with your oridinary user password, and then you've GOT 5 minutes to do what you want. So I guess you could set the root password with passwd root after using sudo

b) As for Earthlink, I've never HEARD of it. I presume its the name of your ISP and they gave you a setup CD. If your lucky then you've got a broadband router which that CD has already configured for you, and if you're even luckier your router is setup for DHCP.

You could just try using the Linux Mint admin tools to configure your NIC to use DHCP, but if its more complex you might to to boot from Windows again and look at your NIC's TCP/IP Properties, and then boot back to Linux Mint and set the NIC up in the same way.

c) For legal reasons you'll have to download and install libdvdcss seperately before you can play any copyright DVD. There's no law against playing DVDs you've paid for on a Linux machine, but there's debate about whether or not the program that makes it possible could be deemed a copyright circumvention device under DCMA law, so everyone plays it safe and leaves you to install it for yourself. Now SEE this is what I was getting at. I use windows programs that you point and click, or type what you wont to do. I don't know what sudo is. I don't have a router or broad band connection. I don't know what DHCP is. I will go the link you gave and see what I can find out. Thank you much for your time.Sudo just allows for you to perform admin tasks, otherwise it will just block you out to prevent any damaging changes to the system.

The linux mint forums are a good place for the info, you can ALSO try the Ubuntu forums.

Solve : does anyone know of an OS without command line, shell terminal etc...?

Answer»

does anyone know of any operating SYSTEM that doesnt use power user LIKE command line or terminal etc
I dont know if im getting my question CORRECT but what i mean is this: Im not used to os like linux based os, that makes use of a shell terminal, commands and stuff like that...I prefare windows-like os that you can only use your mouse to sort things out...as in making browing, downloads very easy.
Just like microsoft....
I would have prefered ms vista but im having some problems with mine...i just wanna install ANOTHER operating system.
any idea will be appreciated. Here is a list of other operating systems.
Most systems had a command line interface because the early remote communication was very slow and the terminals were bit standardized.

http://www.google.com/Top/Computers/Software/Operating_Systems/

One place to start is to look at the Amiga system ans see if that is what your would like
Also take a good look at BeOS. Many people THOUGHT it was the best thing ever.

And CPM is in the list, but never had a real GUI.

Also, notice the PICK is in the list. It was a very important system at one time.

Before I even owned a computer I programmed in PICK BASIC on a Norsk Data minicomputer.Dias de verano. you are showing your age. You may want to try PCLinuxOS. Althrough it still has a terminal window much like MS Window command prompt , it also has a gui control center for both user and admin tasks.

Solve : Best way to transfer Linux to another drive...?

Answer»

I think I am going to grab an unused older 40GB drive from my school for my server so I can better to remote backups...

I tried using a clone tool, more than one in FACT, to get Linux onto a different drive before, however, I never really had any luck at it.

My question is: What is the best way to transfer Linux from one drive to another larger one?

Also, while I am at it: How good are software-based RAID systems (using no hardware RAID interface)?

And, my motherboard has a regular old IDE cable interface... can I connect more than two drives to it if I have a cable that is split into three, and can I use the one mainly intended for the CD-ROM drives for hard drive?

Quote

I've never seen three on an IDE cable, before.

Quote
and can I use the one mainly intended for the CD-ROM drives for hard drive?

Yes.
So, I could potentially put 4 drives in my computer?
Yes, you can put four good IDE drives on one computer. Use good quality cables. Make sue the drives are similar in quality and structure.
There is a utility often used in Linux for partition management. It can also copy portions to free space. If the disks are perfect, it works find. If the disks are flaky..ER.. not so good.

Google this:
Gparted hard disk partition manager for Linux

I have it on a Bookable USB drive. AFAIK you can only have a Master and Slave on an IDE bus, so I assume you have 2 IDE buses in which case you can connect 4 drives (i.e. 3 disk drives and 1 DVD drive)

If you already have Linux booted on the system then you don't need to use GPartEd as you can run fdisk from linux to partition the new drive.

There are several ways to copy the filesystems from your old drive to the new one. I think that the easiest would be to download Knoppix and use that to boot from DVD, and then use dd to copy the original boot partition to the new boot partition (its never a good idea to use dd to copy the root filesystem whilst you are booted from it, as dd has no way of keeping track of what changes occured whilst the disk is being used, and fsck might not be able to repair the copy)

You need to ensure the destination partition is the same size or bigger than the source partition, and if you want you can grow the filesystem you can use resize2fs

The final step is to use install-grub to make the new disk bootable, and if you're doing all this from Knoppix don't forget to mount the filesystem on /mnt and use --root-directy=/mntput drive 2 on primary ide secondary. Make sure to move jumper to secondary position before inserting drive. Boot into linux. Login with root. at the # sign type in the following:

dd if=/dev/hda of=/dev/hdb

this will make an exact duplicate of the first drive. do a shutdown and power off. Change the drive jumper again to primary and you should boot off it to make sure its working before transfering it to a new case.

warning it MAY TAKE some time depending on the size of the drives INVOLVED. also one other thing, the new drive should be as large as if not larger than the older drive.

Mind you if there is any difference in the motherboard this drive is installed with you will need to make sure kudzu runs if it's 7.2 or newer OS, to unconfigure and configure the new motherboard's devices.I use Ultimate Boot CD, anyone familiar with that at all?

Anyways, I tried using multiple cloning tools in it, and none worked... should I assume it was a configuration problem, or something else? The UBCD you have may be older software.
The free Linux partition manager is here:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/
Gnome Partition Editor is also on bistros like Ubuntu.
Try it. Is is free.

Solve : Fixing dual boot?

Answer»

I have a laptop dual booting vista & 10.04lts
vista came pre installed
I would like to burn an ISO of vista
so I can do a clean install of Ubuntu
I would like to have a copy of vista, should I ever feel the need to reinstall & since I have a legitimate validation key...
Did you already check the Gateway site? This is a way of making recovery Disk for a Gateway system with Vista. You u will have to explore their site to find out how to do it.

http://support.gateway.com/s/software/MICROSOF/vista/7515418/7515418asi.shtmlThis is on my wife's HP
I asked over on the windows section, as if I were going to replace the HDD
& got directed to burn some recovery disc's
I'm trying to do a clean vista install just to see if the disc's will work
the real plan is to install mint9 & use the entire HDD
I just want the option to put vista back in should the need ever arise
so far it hasn't & she has been happy using mint for about 3 months.
Your comments are confusing. In your initial post, you say you have Vista and Ubuntu installed. Then, in your reply to Geek-9pm, you say your wife has happily been using Mint for about 3 months. I think some clarification is needed. My wife hasn't booted into vista for months, so I was tidying up all the files, combining all the pictures w/pictures, documents all together & so on. I moved everything onto a different computer on the network

Mint9 is a deviation of Ubuntu 10.04, which is a little more polished, all the codecs & driver needed are already installed
the partitions were very messy, I really had a quad boot

having multiple OS's works, but it is confusing. In the end I couldn't stand having 60g of HDD devoted to vista. I found that working with video is actually easier in Unbuntu, than in windoze, for the simple things like downloading & burning

I burned the recovery discs for vista & ran far enough through the recovery process to feel confident the files are good
I did a fresh install of mint using the entire HDD, which only took about 1/2 hour. the notebook is so much more pleasant to use [trouble free too]

I've been working with Linux for a year now, most of my confusion has come from
working too hard, I've been finding all the apps I could ever want are available through synaptic & the software manager

It can get tricky when asking for help the user forum, as many of the solutions offered take me to Terminal... There are very few things that can't be done with a graphical interface [point & CLICK].
the greatest weakness is the knowledge base is geared much more to the experienced user.
It's as if there is a jump from learning how to build a wheel to designing the guidance control system for the space shuttle

I don't think linux is for everyone
But it is certainly a good choice for older hardware. I have a 1.3 gHz pentiumIII pc that is much more pleasant to use as a 10.04 machine than it ever was on XP.So, back to the basic question, which is how, or whether, Vista can be installed on a system with Linux already installed, right? I've never done that so all I can recommend is using Google or your favorite search engine to search for references such as: How to dual-boot Vista with Linux (with Linux installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots.

Of COURSE, another option would be to start from scratch, format the hard drive, install Vista, and then install your preferred Linux OS. But, I imagine you'd rather avoid that, if possible.

By the way, I can't image why you'd need to consume 60GB for Vista unless you had an exceptionally large amount of programs and files on that same partition. I think the normal method is too start with vista
Should I ever feel the need, this is what I'll do

The recovery discs I burned will wipe everything off the HDD...

I saw recommendations to never have less than 50g for vista, recovery was around 12g by itself
It was also suggested not to fill more than 2/3rds of the available HDD in vista

I'll probably never go back to vista, I just wanted to have the option, before installing linux on the entire HDDWell, I have Vista on my laptop and have 38GB allocated to drive C for Vista. Now, it's possible I may need to expand that partition if I installed numerous additional programs but, as it stands now, 38GB is sufficient. we really don't do anything unusual
gmail, surfing, pictures, listening to music [no downloading]
nothing especially resource intensive in the way of programs

We could never come to terms with Vista
The accounts & public folders were just a nightmare, an "expert" on another forum kept telling me not to treat it like XP
I never could figure out what that meant
I don't need a bunch of nag SCREENS & security to protect me from myself
Files go where I tell them to in [linux] mint, I was never quite sure in vista, whether things were moving or links being CREATED or copies being made....
other people love Vista & 7
I never tried 7, so I have no idea.
I didn't find vista especially user friendly, I guess my intuition is the wrong kind

Rant offIf vista came pre-installed in ur system, probably u must have a dump of the vista setup some where in ur c: drive. Not any more

Solve : Need to simplify searching HUGE logs?

Answer»

I’m looking for a WAY to search a huge log file for a string but I need the output to show me something like the 10 lines before or after the string. We have an application that generates HUGE logs. I can grep the logs for a text string but the output doesn’t show me everything I need to see. So, once determining the string is present I have to go into the log and go from {pattern} to {patern}, sometimes all the log entries for an event can be spread over hundreds of lines, with other events mixed in, depends on when the other interfaces respond. Hundreds of lines cover only a couple seconds.

I’ve tried multiple and assorted combinations of “cat”, ‘”sed” etc etc. So, far I’m clueless.

Is there some way to search a log for a specific string and have the output include lines above and or below the string?
So something like clicking cache on google and getting your search highlighted and you can see it in context? If you look through google I think there is a way to use their software to do something like that.you can try as below:
grep -B1 "your search text" yourtextfilenamehere | grep -v ^\-\- > result.txtThanks for your contribution, Mylove52, but this topic is over 4 years old. Oh, is that so Co2 :-)

COULD you please tell us then what would be the solution. Many Thanks.Personally, I haven't used Linux much at all, so I'm not sure as to what the solution is. However, I don't think Mike Mowry would mind. There are so many ways to do this, It would help if the TS would outline a method that he thinks would work. Then different ones here might give code in various scripts or program languages. The issue is a piratical method, not which language.
Like this:
Code: [Select]SPECIFY Log File
Specify target string
Name output
Number of lines to induce before and afte
Read until end of log file
Find target string
write lines before
write target line
write lines after
end

the solution is as posted
Code: [Select]grep -A10 -B10 "search string" file
I think CARBONS point was that posting a solution is a complete waste of time on account of the age of the thread. additionally the topic starter is "no longer with us" so to speak.i don't really think it matters, no solution is posted in the first place. It might benefit those who are searching the forums for similar posts. I do agree that if a solution is already posted, then bumping up this thread is unnecessary (unless it offers new insights to possible solutions)The POST was from four years back.
So, I just amused he was from
